  1. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  2. Heavenly Father, you are the God of truth.

  3. ! Heavenly Father, you are the God of truth.

  4. !

  5. That we might be transformed to be more Christ-like in our truth-telling and in our bearing witness to the truth of the gospel.

  6. So, Lord, now meet with us and give us the humility that we need and the faith that we need to hear your word.

  7. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  8. If you are able, please stand for the reading of God's word to honor God who has spoken to us in his word.

  9. Matthew 5, 33-37.

  10. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old,

  11. You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.

  12. But I say to you,

  13. Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king.

  14. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.

  15. Let what you say be simply yes or no.

  16. Anything more than this comes from evil.

  17. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  18. Please be seated.

  19. Just to remind you, we've been on a three-week hiatus from the book of Matthew,

  20. but we are returning to the series, and we are in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount,

  21. which is the largest block, or the first block, of Jesus' five major bodies of teaching in the book of Matthew.

  22. And this passage comes on the heels of Jesus' teaching about murder, and adultery, and divorce.

  23. And after talking about such heavy topics, the topic of breaking an oath or swearing falsely may seem,

  24. or in short, to summarize it, lying, might seem somewhat trivial to many of us.

  25. After all, don't we all take it for granted that whoever tells you that he never lies is lying?

  26. But this is no trivial topic.

  27. Revelation 21.8 tells us that as for all liars,

  28. their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

  29. It is a matter of life and death, what we talk about.

  30. It's a matter of heaven and hell.

  31. Well, God takes lying very seriously because he describes himself as the God of truth in Isaiah 65.16.

  32. He says the sum of his word is truth in Psalm 119.160.

  33. He says he never lies in Titus 1.2.

  34. In contrast, John 8.55 calls the devil a liar and a father of lies.

  35. So people who lie are acting like the devil and not like God.

  36. They are betraying their true paternity.

  37. That they belong not to God the Father, but to the father of lies.

  38. That alone is enough reason to pay utmost attention to this passage.

  39. But there are still more reasons why Jesus' teaching on this subject matter is so important.

  40. A few weeks ago, when we were talking about verses 27 to 32,

  41. we addressed how pervasive adultery and divorce are in our world and in our society.

  42. And how they are eroding the foundation of our society by breaking and destroying marriages.

  43. And breaking families apart.

  44. That's all true.

  45. And that's still a very pervasive sin.

  46. But I would argue that breaking oaths and swearing falsely is an even more pervasive sin.

  47. Because if you think about it, every single instance of adultery,

  48. every single instance of divorce is an instance of oath-breaking.

  49. Because a man and a woman enter into the covenant of marriage by making vows to one another.

  50. In the name of God,

  51. I shone, take you, Hannah, to be my wife,

  52. to have and to hold from this day forward,

  53. for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer,

  54. in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish,

  55. until death do us part.

  56. This is my solemn vow.

  57. If everyone kept their marriage vows,

  58. there would be no adultery.

  59. There would be no divorce.

  60. I have a friend who is in the middle of

  61. pursuing a wife who is in ongoing adultery.

  62. And even though it is well past the point

  63. where most men would have abandoned the project altogether,

  64. he continues to pray for his wife and pursue reconciliation.

  65. Why?

  66. He often repeats the same words.

  67. I made a vow.

  68. I made a vow.

  69. It's not a coincidence that this passage comes immediately

  70. after the passage about divorce.

  71. But breaking oaths and swearing falsely

  72. goes far beyond marriage vows.

  73. How many witnesses have gone to court

  74. and have said with their right hand up in the air,

  75. I do solemnly swear that the testimony I shall give

  76. is the truth, to be the truth, the whole truth,

  77. and nothing but the truth.

  78. Only afterward to perjure themselves

  79. and bear false witness against their neighbors

  80. so that the innocent are punished and the wicked are freed.

  81. How many healthcare professionals

  82. have taken the Hippocratic oath,

  83. swearing that they will do no harm,

  84. and yet have over-prescribed opioids,

  85. performed unnecessary procedures for profit?

  86. How many of them have played God

  87. in taking life and not merely saving life?

  88. How many of them have abused sedated patients

  89. who are entrusted to their care,

  90. as some of our own members have experienced?

  91. How many politicians and public servants,

  92. after taking an oath to uphold the Constitution

  93. and faithfully execute their duties,

  94. invoking the name of God,

  95. saying, so help me God,

  96. have violated those very commitments

  97. and been impeached

  98. or have been forced to resign?

  99. How many journalists have signed on

  100. to the journalist's creeds,

  101. affirming that the public journal

  102. is a public trust,

  103. and that they are trustees for the public

  104. and agree to pursue accuracy and fairness

  105. in all their work,

  106. only to spread willingly or unknowingly

  107. or unknowingly false

  108. or misleading information to the public?

  109. It's no wonder that in 2018,

  110. the Edelman Trust Barometer reported

  111. a record-breaking 37-point drop

  112. in public trust across all U.S. institutions.

  113. According to 2024 reports,

  114. 60% of people in the U.S.

  115. worry that journalists and reporters

  116. are purposely trying to mislead people

  117. by saying things they know

  118. are false or gross exaggerations.

  119. 60%.

  120. 70% of them worry that government leaders

  121. are doing the same.

  122. Public trust has eroded so much

  123. that we now have dedicated fact-checkers,

  124. PolitiFact, FactCheck.org,

  125. Snopes, Reuters, FactCheck.

  126. But because these fact-checkers

  127. also tend to be biased

  128. and share misleading information,

  129. now we have fact-checkers

  130. of fact-checkers.

  131. Like Media Bias slash Fact Check,

  132. International Fact-Checking Network,

  133. AllSides.com,

  134. which I am sure does not include all sides.

  135. Yeah.

  136. In such an age,

  137. Jesus teaches us to be set apart

  138. from the world.

  139. He tells us to be simple truth-tellers

  140. who need no oaths.

  141. I'm going to talk about this important passage

  142. in three parts.

  143. First, keep your oath.

  144. Second, take no oath.

  145. And then third, remember God's oath.

  146. First, Jesus addresses the Old Testament command

  147. to keep the vows one makes to God

  148. in verse 33.

  149. Again,

  150. you have heard that it was said

  151. to those of old,

  152. you shall not swear falsely,

  153. but shall perform to the Lord

  154. what you have sworn.

  155. Many Old Testament passages

  156. deal with this subject

  157. of swearing by God's name.

  158. It's connected to the third

  159. of the Ten Commandments

  160. in Exodus 20.

  161. It says,

  162. You shall not take the name

  163. of the Lord your God in vain,

  164. for the Lord will not hold him guiltless

  165. who takes his name in vain.

  166. Jesus is here addressing two related issues.

  167. First is making a vow to God.

  168. Second is swearing an oath.

  169. We see the distinction of those two things,

  170. a vow and an oath,

  171. in Numbers chapter 30 verse 2.

    Numbers 30:2

  172. It says,

  173. If a man vows a vow to the Lord

  174. or swears an oath

  175. to bind himself by a pledge,

  176. he shall not break his word.

  177. He shall do according to all

  178. that proceeds out of his mouth.

  179. When you make a vow,

  180. you make a solemn promise to God

  181. saying that you will perform

  182. a certain action.

  183. When you take an oath,

  184. you're making a solemn promise

  185. or a statement to someone else,

  186. to another person,

  187. while invoking the name of God

  188. and to undergird your statement,

  189. to basically boost and bolster your statement.

  190. I vow to give half of my possessions to you,

  191. oh God.

  192. That's a vow.

  193. You're promising to God

  194. something that you will do.

  195. When your professor is questioning

  196. the authenticity of your paper,

  197. and then you say,

  198. I swear to God that I wrote this paper

  199. and not ChatGPT.

  200. And if that's not true,

  201. then I can fail all my classes.

  202. That's swearing an oath,

  203. invoking the name of God

  204. to prove the veracity of a statement

  205. that you are making.

  206. So technically,

  207. these two things are distinct,

  208. swearing an oath

  209. and making a vow.

  210. However,

  211. Jesus is addressing both of those things

  212. because they're intimately related

  213. and at the heart of it,

  214. they're the same.

  215. The Old Testament repeatedly taught

  216. that one must pay what one vowed.

  217. It says,

  218. it is better that you should not vow

  219. than that you should vow and not pay,

  220. Ecclesiastes 5, 4 to 6.

  221. In fact,

  222. Deuteronomy 23,

  223. 21 to 23 says,

  224. that the Lord your God

  225. will surely require the vow of you

  226. and you will be guilty of sin.

  227. Why does God take oaths so seriously?

  228. Isaiah 65, 16

  229. specifically commands us

  230. only to swear by the name of God,

  231. by the God of truth

  232. because his name,

  233. he's the unchanging God,

  234. he's the eternal God,

  235. he's the God who is truth itself

  236. and therefore his name is the only one

  237. that can really undergird an oath.

  238. So Leviticus 19, 12 says,

  239. you shall not swear by my name falsely

  240. and so profane the name of your God.

  241. I am the Lord.

  242. To take an oath in God's name

  243. and to not keep it

  244. is to declare by your actions

  245. that God is a liar.

  246. To make an oath and to not keep it

  247. is to declare by your actions

  248. that God does not keep his promises,

  249. that God's name,

  250. that his reputation

  251. is now marred by that sin.

  252. And that's why the Old Testament saints

  253. took swearing

  254. and keeping their vows so seriously.

  255. Psalm 15, 4,

  256. I've mentioned this in Ecclesiastes,

  257. describes the person

  258. who walks blamelessly before God

  259. as one who swears to his own hurt

  260. and does not change.

  261. Meaning that this person,

  262. a godly person,

  263. a righteous person

  264. would rather suffer personal loss

  265. than break his word.

  266. not keep his word.

  267. How many people like that do you know

  268. in this day and age?

  269. More often people break their promises

  270. and say,

  271. oh, I'm sorry.

  272. My circumstances changed.

  273. And by those statements,

  274. we betray the reality

  275. that our words are only as good

  276. as our uncontrollable,

  277. ever-changing circumstances.

  278. But God delights in the person

  279. who swears to his own hurt

  280. and does not change.

  281. And for that reason,

  282. it's also a grave mistake

  283. and a sin to swear

  284. and to take an oath rashly

  285. in a circumstance

  286. where you should not be taking an oath.

  287. The Bible includes

  288. several cautionary tales for us,

  289. perhaps most notoriously

  290. in Judges 11, 30 to 39.

  291. Jephthah, a judge,

  292. an Israeli judge,

  293. makes a vow to the Lord saying,

  294. if you help me defeat the Ammonites,

  295. you know,

  296. when I return home to celebrate,

  297. whatever comes out the door

  298. of my house first,

  299. I will offer to you

  300. as a burnt offering.

  301. Man,

  302. I don't know what the guy was thinking.

  303. What was he expecting,

  304. I wonder,

  305. to come out of his house

  306. to greet him?

  307. I hope he had a dog.

  308. You know,

  309. I'm sorry if you love dogs

  310. because what happened

  311. is much,

  312. much worse.

  313. Out comes his daughter,

  314. his only daughter,

  315. his only child,

  316. a virgin maiden.

  317. And this guy,

  318. he's the judge of Israel,

  319. being the proud man that he is

  320. and being a bad father that he is,

  321. actually sacrifices her.

  322. If you break the oath,

  323. you break the third commandment.

  324. If you keep the oath,

  325. you break the sixth commandment.

  326. He should have never

  327. put himself in that situation.

  328. In Joshua 9,

  329. the Israelites bind themselves

  330. with an oath

  331. not to go war

  332. against the Gibeonites,

  333. not knowing that Gibeonites

  334. are actually

  335. a neighboring

  336. nation

  337. in the land of Canaan

  338. that God has commanded them

  339. to drive out of Canaan.

  340. So now,

  341. if they keep the oath

  342. that they made,

  343. they

  344. sin,

  345. break the commandment of God.

  346. If they break the oath,

  347. they also sin.

  348. And break the commandment of God.

  349. A lose-lose situation

  350. that they should have never been in

  351. if they had not made a rash vow.

  352. 1 Samuel 14,

  353. 24-30,

  354. King Saul is leading the Israelites

  355. in charge against the Philistines.

  356. And his son,

  357. Jonathan,

  358. leads the charge

  359. and wins the dim,

  360. the lone bright spot

  361. in their long war.

  362. It was Jonathan's victory

  363. over these Philistines.

  364. But Saul,

  365. in his overzealousness

  366. and foolishness,

  367. makes a vow saying,

  368. anyone who eats anything

  369. before I avenge myself

  370. on my enemies

  371. shall die.

  372. And they are surrounded

  373. by the spoils

  374. from their enemy

  375. that they could feast upon

  376. and to strengthen themselves

  377. and to go on to war.

  378. Honey is dripping out of trees

  379. and they're just,

  380. everybody's just staring

  381. and not eating.

  382. And they are faint

  383. and they are unable

  384. to win a great victory

  385. because of that rash vow.

  386. And not only that,

  387. Jonathan is unaware

  388. that his dad

  389. has made such a vow

  390. and then he takes some honey

  391. and eats it

  392. so that Saul nearly kills him

  393. until it says

  394. in 1 Samuel 14, 45,

  395. that the people of Israel

  396. ransomed Jonathan

  397. with their own oath

  398. saying,

  399. as the Lord lives,

  400. there shall not one hair

  401. of his head

  402. fall to the ground

  403. for he has worked

  404. with God this day.

  405. It was an oath

  406. that Saul should have

  407. never taken.

  408. All that to say,

  409. Old Testament takes

  410. taking oaths

  411. very seriously

  412. and it does not

  413. prohibit oath taking

  414. but it does demand

  415. oath keeping

  416. once it's taken.

  417. Why then does Jesus

  418. command us

  419. in the following verses

  420. not to take an oath

  421. at all?

  422. That's my second point.

  423. Take no oath.

  424. Jesus once again

  425. contrasts his own

  426. teaching from that

  427. of the traditional

  428. Jewish understanding

  429. of God's word.

  430. In verses 33 to 34,

  431. he says,

  432. Again,

  433. you have heard

  434. that it was said

  435. to those of old,

  436. you shall not swear falsely

  437. but shall perform

  438. to the Lord

  439. what you have sworn.

  440. But I say to you,

  441. do not take an oath

  442. at all.

  443. Jesus is again

  444. positioning himself

  445. as the divine law giver

  446. because after all,

  447. who can give such

  448. a definitive,

  449. authoritative take

  450. on the law of God

  451. overturning

  452. millennia of legal precedents

  453. and theological tradition.

  454. Remember in chapter 5,

  455. verse 17 to 20,

  456. Jesus gave a definitive judgment

  457. of the Old Testament law.

  458. He said,

  459. I have not come

  460. to abolish the law

  461. but to fulfill the law.

  462. For I tell you,

  463. unless your righteousness

  464. exceeds that of the scribes

  465. and the Pharisees,

  466. you will never enter

  467. the kingdom of heaven.

  468. And then,

  469. as we've been in,

  470. as we've been seeing

  471. in the following six passages

  472. after that,

  473. Jesus gives a series

  474. of six contrasts.

  475. You have heard

  476. that it was said

  477. to the people of old

  478. but I say to you,

  479. contrasts,

  480. six illustrations

  481. to show

  482. the inadequate righteousness

  483. of the Pharisees

  484. and the scribes

  485. and to show

  486. the true righteousness

  487. that God demands

  488. that exceeds

  489. that of the Pharisees

  490. and the scribes.

  491. But this still raises

  492. the question,

  493. doesn't God actually

  494. command his people

  495. to take an oath

  496. in the Old Testament?

  497. He does.

  498. In Exodus 20 to 11,

  499. in Numbers 5,

  500. 19 to 22,

  501. he commands his people

  502. to take oaths

  503. in certain situations.

  504. So then,

  505. isn't Jesus contradicting

  506. and abolishing

  507. the law of God?

  508. I don't think

  509. that is the case.

  510. The situation is similar

  511. to the preceding passage

  512. about divorce

  513. in verses 31 and 32.

  514. God did make

  515. a provision

  516. in the scriptures

  517. for divorce

  518. in the Old Testament

  519. but as Jesus teaches

  520. later on

  521. in Matthew 19,

    Matthew 19:8

  522. verse 8,

  523. this was a concession

  524. to the people's

  525. hardness of heart.

  526. It was not

  527. God's original idea

  528. for people to divorce.

  529. God's standard,

  530. his ideal,

  531. is that a man

  532. and a woman marry

  533. and they're married

  534. for life

  535. until death

  536. do them part.

  537. Divorce is only

  538. a temporary provision

  539. for a broken

  540. and fallen world.

  541. It's intended

  542. to mitigate

  543. human evil,

  544. to constrain

  545. human evil,

  546. not to establish

  547. the divine standard.

  548. In our country,

  549. disclosing classified

  550. information is illegal

  551. if you work

  552. for the federal government.

  553. however,

  554. at the same time,

  555. there is

  556. the Whistleblower

  557. Protection Act

  558. which allows

  559. federal government

  560. employees to disclose

  561. classified information

  562. as long as

  563. it is intended

  564. to expose

  565. government corruption.

  566. Two seemingly

  567. contradictory laws

  568. exist.

  569. One says you cannot

  570. disclose

  571. classified information,

  572. one says you can

  573. and should disclose

  574. classified information.

  575. why do those

  576. laws exist?

  577. Not because

  578. it's good

  579. or it's right

  580. that you should be

  581. leaking classified

  582. information,

  583. but because it's

  584. taking into account

  585. the fact that

  586. humans are fallen

  587. and some officials

  588. are corrupted

  589. and so there needs

  590. to be some provision

  591. to account for

  592. that reality.

  593. Similarly,

  594. oaths were

  595. instituted by God

  596. to contain

  597. and minimize

  598. the damage

  599. done by human

  600. failure and lies.

  601. humans are

  602. deceptive

  603. and untrustworthy

  604. so often

  605. that it was

  606. necessary

  607. to create

  608. the oath

  609. system

  610. to ensure

  611. that in certain

  612. very dire

  613. grave circumstances

  614. people

  615. tell the truth.

  616. Vows and oaths

  617. therefore

  618. are concessions

  619. to the hardness

  620. of the human art

  621. not commands

  622. or the ideals

  623. that capture

  624. God's ultimate standard.

  625. So Jesus is here

  626. bringing us back

  627. to God's

  628. original

  629. ultimate standard

  630. in verses 34

  631. to 37.

  632. But I say to you

  633. do not take an oath

  634. at all

  635. either by heaven

  636. for it is the throne

  637. of God

  638. or by the earth

  639. for it is his footstool

  640. or by Jerusalem

  641. for it is the city

  642. of the great king

  643. and do not take

  644. an oath by your head

  645. for you cannot make

  646. one hair

  647. white or black.

  648. Let what you say

  649. be simply

  650. yes or no

  651. anything more than this

  652. comes from evil.

  653. Because the Jews

  654. of Jesus' day

  655. took rightly

  656. took oaths

  657. very seriously

  658. they were hesitant

  659. to invoke God's name

  660. directly when they

  661. were making vows.

  662. However

  663. they wrongly believed

  664. that by taking oaths

  665. by sacred things

  666. that are not quite

  667. as sacred

  668. as the name of God

  669. they could get themselves

  670. off the hook

  671. without consequence

  672. from oaths

  673. that they have made.

  674. I swear

  675. by heaven itself

  676. that this snake oil

  677. that I'm selling

  678. to you

  679. will heal you

  680. of all your diseases

  681. because it was

  682. blessed by the priest.

  683. Some

  684. faithful

  685. well-meaning

  686. layperson

  687. buys the snake oil

  688. applies it

  689. and it does nothing.

  690. and he comes back

  691. to the religious leader

  692. and says

  693. you swore

  694. by God's name

  695. that this thing works

  696. and then he says

  697. oh no

  698. you see

  699. I did not swear

  700. by God's name.

  701. Actually

  702. if you might recall

  703. accurately

  704. I swore

  705. by heaven

  706. which is not

  707. the same thing

  708. as swearing

  709. by God's name.

  710. Same difference.

  711. No, no, no

  712. you see

  713. I'm the teacher

  714. of the law

  715. and there's

  716. a very big difference.

  717. Heaven is part

  718. of God's creation.

  719. God is the creator.

  720. Have you ever heard

  721. of the creator

  722. creature distinction?

  723. No, no, no, no, no.

  724. That's heresy

  725. that's blasphemy.

  726. Get out of here

  727. you have no case

  728. to make against me.

  729. Jesus gives an example

  730. of this kind of

  731. specious rationalization

  732. by the religious leaders

  733. in Matthew 23

  734. 16 to 17.

  735. He says

  736. woe to you

  737. blind guides

  738. who say

  739. if anyone swears

  740. by the temple

  741. it is nothing

  742. but if anyone

  743. swears by the gold

  744. of the temple

  745. he is bound

  746. by his oath.

  747. You blind fools

  748. for which is greater

  749. the gold

  750. or the temple

  751. that has made

  752. the gold sacred.

  753. It's really no different

  754. from the social swearing

  755. that people engage

  756. in nowadays.

  757. If you go hang out

  758. at the playground

  759. where the kids

  760. are playing

  761. you can overhear

  762. things like this.

  763. I swear

  764. that I have

  765. that super rare

  766. Pokemon card.

  767. I swear

  768. I can do

  769. a cartwheel.

  770. I'm just

  771. not going to do it

  772. right now.

  773. because I'm injured.

  774. And then

  775. when they're exposed

  776. to be a fraud

  777. they say

  778. I bet you didn't know

  779. that I had my fingers

  780. crossed in the back.

  781. It doesn't really work.

  782. It's not binding.

  783. That's

  784. essentially

  785. what these religious

  786. leaders were doing.

  787. The Jews

  788. were swearing

  789. by heaven

  790. by Jerusalem

  791. and by their own head

  792. thinking that they could

  793. break these oaths

  794. with indemnity

  795. while still

  796. using them

  797. to manipulate people

  798. into believing them

  799. and trusting them

  800. and doing what they

  801. want them to do.

  802. And Jesus

  803. tells them

  804. no

  805. heaven

  806. is the throne

  807. of God.

  808. And if you swear

  809. by heaven

  810. you swear by heaven

  811. and the God

  812. who sits

  813. on his throne.

  814. if you swear

  815. by the earth

  816. it is God's

  817. footstool

  818. as it says

  819. in Isaiah

  820. and you swear

  821. by the footstool

  822. and the one

  823. who rests

  824. his foot on it.

  825. If you swear

  826. by Jerusalem

  827. it is the city

  828. of the great king

  829. the Lord's anointed

  830. and you swear

  831. by the great city

  832. and the king

  833. the anointed

  834. and the Lord

  835. in whose name

  836. he was anointed.

  837. in fact

  838. don't even swear

  839. by your head.

  840. You know people think

  841. with my own head

  842. at least I have

  843. responsibility for this

  844. I can swear

  845. by my own head

  846. and Jesus says

  847. no

  848. you cannot even make

  849. one strand of hair

  850. white or black.

  851. Dyeing doesn't count.

  852. Yes.

  853. You think

  854. you're responsible

  855. for your own head

  856. no you are not.

  857. God is responsible

  858. for your life.

  859. God is responsible

  860. for your head.

  861. God is the one

  862. who has every hair

  863. on your head

  864. numbered

  865. and when you swear

  866. by your own head

  867. you swear by your head

  868. and the God

  869. who makes it

  870. and sustains it.

  871. In other words

  872. don't think

  873. that you could

  874. wiggle your way

  875. out of the promises

  876. you make

  877. and the oaths

  878. you make.

  879. Keep every oath

  880. you make.

  881. Better yet

  882. as Jesus says

  883. in verse 37

  884. let what you say

  885. be simply

  886. yes or no

  887. anything more than this

  888. comes from evil.

  889. Vows and oaths

  890. like I said earlier

  891. are concessions

  892. to the hardness

  893. of the human heart.

  894. If we

  895. if all of humanity

  896. practiced

  897. transparency

  898. and simple honesty

  899. in all of our speech

  900. and dealings

  901. then vows

  902. and oaths

  903. would immediately

  904. become obsolete.

  905. That is

  906. God's

  907. ultimate

  908. standard.

  909. This is why

  910. I think

  911. Jesus' teaching

  912. here applies

  913. far widely

  914. to all forms

  915. of deception

  916. and manipulation

  917. because why

  918. do we

  919. swear falsely?

  920. Why do we

  921. make promises

  922. and vows

  923. and then break them?

  924. Why do we

  925. exaggerate

  926. and embellish

  927. our stories?

  928. Why do we

  929. flatter people

  930. and say things

  931. we don't really mean

  932. to gain their

  933. confidence

  934. and trust

  935. and favor?

  936. Why do we

  937. betray people

  938. who have

  939. entrusted to us

  940. their confidence

  941. and secrets?

  942. Why do we

  943. tell half-truths

  944. or half-truth

  945. told as a

  946. whole truth

  947. is a whole lie?

  948. We do it all

  949. to gain a selfish

  950. advantage.

  951. To get people

  952. to believe us.

  953. to get people

  954. to like us

  955. and not them.

  956. To get people

  957. to do what

  958. we want

  959. them to do.

  960. And all of this

  961. God says

  962. is evil

  963. in his eyes.

  964. Instead

  965. be simple

  966. truth tellers

  967. who need

  968. no oath

  969. to verify

  970. his or her

  971. speech.

  972. Let what you

  973. say be simply

  974. yes

  975. or no.

  976. this raises

  977. two questions

  978. that require

  979. some

  980. qualification.

  981. First question

  982. is there ever

  983. a situation

  984. where it is

  985. okay

  986. not to be

  987. fully factual?

  988. Second

  989. is there ever

  990. a situation

  991. where it is

  992. okay

  993. to take

  994. an oath

  995. say in the

  996. courtroom?

  997. First

  998. is there ever

  999. a situation

  1000. where it is

  1001. okay

  1002. not to be

  1003. fully factual?

  1004. I think

  1005. the Bible

  1006. demands

  1007. that we

  1008. answer

  1009. yes

  1010. to that

  1011. question.

  1012. Because there

  1013. are numerous

  1014. examples

  1015. in scripture

  1016. of godly

  1017. saints

  1018. being commended

  1019. for misleading

  1020. speech.

  1021. The Hebrew

  1022. midwives

  1023. in Exodus

    Exodus 1 chapter mention

  1024. chapter 1

  1025. misled

  1026. Pharaoh.

  1027. The Pharaoh

  1028. commands them

  1029. to kill

  1030. every Jewish

  1031. son that is

  1032. born.

  1033. And they're

  1034. like oh

  1035. no no no

  1036. we can't

  1037. why aren't

  1038. you guys

  1039. killing them?

  1040. And they're

  1041. like oh

  1042. no no

  1043. these Jewish

  1044. women are

  1045. so vigorous

  1046. they give

  1047. birth before

  1048. we can get

  1049. there to do

  1050. anything about

  1051. it.

  1052. you know

  1053. and it

  1054. says that

  1055. God

  1056. blessed

  1057. them for

  1058. that

  1059. and gave

  1060. them their

  1061. own families

  1062. because they

  1063. feared God.

  1064. Rahab the

  1065. prostitute

  1066. shelters

  1067. and hides

  1068. the Israeli

  1069. spies in

  1070. Jericho

  1071. and deceives

  1072. the king

  1073. of Jericho

  1074. about their

  1075. whereabouts

  1076. in Joshua

    Joshua 2:1–7

  1077. chapter 2

  1078. verses 1

  1079. to 7.

  1080. you might

  1081. wonder

  1082. well

  1083. God

  1084. doesn't

  1085. command

  1086. that

  1087. does

  1088. he?

  1089. Was that

  1090. still

  1091. the

  1092. wrong

  1093. thing

  1094. to do?

  1095. No

  1096. because it

  1097. says in

  1098. Hebrews 11

  1099. 31

  1100. it commands

  1101. her for

  1102. that very

  1103. act

  1104. and calls

  1105. her a

  1106. woman of

  1107. faith.

  1108. There are

  1109. contexts

  1110. During the

  1111. conquest of

  1112. Canaan

  1113. when God

  1114. orders an

  1115. ambush

  1116. which is a

  1117. form of

  1118. military

  1119. deception

  1120. jail

  1121. deceives

  1122. the Canaanite

  1123. general

  1124. Sisera

  1125. in

  1126. judges

  1127. God

  1128. develops

  1129. a cover

  1130. story

  1131. for

  1132. prophet

  1133. Samuel

  1134. to tell

  1135. King

  1136. Saul

  1137. because

  1138. he

  1139. knows

  1140. that

  1141. King

  1142. Saul

  1143. is going

  1144. to try

  1145. to kill

  1146. him

  1147. if he

  1148. knows

  1149. that

  1150. Samuel

  1151. is going

  1152. to anoint

  1153. David

  1154. as king

  1155. to replace

  1156. him.

  1157. David

  1158. uses deception

  1159. on a number

  1160. of occasions

  1161. to protect

  1162. himself from

  1163. enemies who

  1164. are trying

  1165. to kill

  1166. him.

  1167. God

  1168. himself

  1169. speaks

  1170. of deceiving

  1171. false

  1172. prophets

  1173. in Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 14:9

  1174. 14

  1175. verse 9

  1176. he says

  1177. he sends

  1178. a lying

  1179. spirit

  1180. so that

  1181. false

  1182. prophets

  1183. prophets

  1184. side

  1185. lies

  1186. in

  1187. 1 Kings

  1188. 22

  1189. 19

  1190. to 23

  1191. and

  1192. finally

  1193. in

  1194. 2 Thessalonians

    2 Thessalonians 2:11

  1195. chapter 2

  1196. verse 11

  1197. God

  1198. says

  1199. that

  1200. he sends

  1201. the wicked

  1202. who refuse

  1203. to love

  1204. the truth

  1205. and so

  1206. be saved

  1207. a strong

  1208. delusion

  1209. so that

  1210. they may

  1211. believe

  1212. what is

  1213. false

  1214. so

  1215. evidently

  1216. obeying

  1217. God's

  1218. commandment

  1219. not to

  1220. lie

  1221. is not

  1222. merely

  1223. about

  1224. being

  1225. factually

  1226. accurate

  1227. in this

  1228. regard

  1229. God

  1230. clearly

  1231. deals

  1232. with

  1233. the

  1234. wicked

  1235. differently

  1236. than

  1237. he

  1238. deals

  1239. with

  1240. the

  1241. righteous

  1242. and

  1243. sometimes

  1244. he

  1245. wants

  1246. the

  1247. righteous

  1248. people

  1249. to

  1250. mislead

  1251. the

  1252. unrighteous

  1253. to

  1254. thwart

  1255. their evil

  1256. but isn't that

  1257. a double

  1258. standard

  1259. how is that

  1260. okay

  1261. this is not

  1262. a double

  1263. standard

  1264. because

  1265. God

  1266. is the

  1267. standard

  1268. of truth

  1269. God

  1270. is the

  1271. Lord

  1272. God

  1273. declares

  1274. I

  1275. the

  1276. Lord

  1277. speak

  1278. the

  1279. truth

  1280. I

  1281. declare

  1282. what

  1283. is

  1284. right

  1285. God

  1286. says

  1287. God

  1288. is the

  1289. ultimate

  1290. standard

  1291. and

  1292. arbiter

  1293. of

  1294. truth

  1295. he

  1296. is the

  1297. ultimate

  1298. source

  1299. and the

  1300. measure

  1301. of

  1302. truth

  1303. because

  1304. he

  1305. is the

  1306. creator

  1307. and the

  1308. Lord

  1309. of

  1310. this

  1311. universe

  1312. we

  1313. do

  1314. not

  1315. measure

  1316. God

  1317. according

  1318. to

  1319. the

  1320. abstract

  1321. truth

  1322. no

  1323. God

  1324. is

  1325. the

  1326. truth

  1327. by which

  1328. we

  1329. measure

  1330. all

  1331. other

  1332. claims

  1333. to

  1334. truth

  1335. this

  1336. is why

  1337. Bible

  1338. declares

  1339. over and

  1340. over again

  1341. that

  1342. all

  1343. of

  1344. God's

  1345. word

  1346. is

  1347. truth

  1348. and

  1349. all

  1350. of

  1351. God's

  1352. deeds

  1353. are

  1354. in

  1355. accordance

  1356. with

  1357. the

  1358. truth

  1359. of

  1360. who

  1361. he

  1362. is

  1363. so

  1364. God's

  1365. concern

  1366. with

  1367. lying

  1368. is

  1369. not

  1370. merely

  1371. about

  1372. making

  1373. sure

  1374. that we

  1375. say

  1376. what

  1377. is

  1378. factually

  1379. accurate

  1380. but

  1381. making

  1382. sure

  1383. that we

  1384. live

  1385. and

  1386. speak

  1387. and

  1388. do

  1389. everything

  1390. in

  1391. accordance

  1392. with

  1393. God

  1394. who

  1395. is

  1396. the

  1397. truth

  1398. so

  1399. it

  1400. says

  1401. in

  1402. John

  1403. 1

  1404. verse

  1405. 6

  1406. if

  1407. we

  1408. say

  1409. we

  1410. have

  1411. fellowship

  1412. with

  1413. him

  1414. while

  1415. we

  1416. walk

  1417. in

  1418. darkness

  1419. we

  1420. lie

  1421. and

  1422. do

  1423. not

  1424. practice

  1425. the

  1426. truth

  1427. this

  1428. is

  1429. why

  1430. in

  1431. some

  1432. situations

  1433. even

  1434. truth

  1435. telling

  1436. can

  1437. be

  1438. sinful

  1439. 1

  1440. Samuel

  1441. 22

  1442. 7

  1443. to

  1444. 10

  1445. Doeg

  1446. the

  1447. Edomite

  1448. sees

  1449. David

  1450. being provided

  1451. for in the

  1452. temple by

  1453. the priest

  1454. and later

  1455. when King

  1456. Saul is

  1457. interrogating

  1458. his servants

  1459. nobody

  1460. speaks

  1461. to

  1462. betray

  1463. David

  1464. except

  1465. for

  1466. Doeg

  1467. the

  1468. Edomite

  1469. he tells

  1470. the king

  1471. the whole

  1472. truth

  1473. so that he

  1474. can find out

  1475. where David

  1476. is and

  1477. pursue him

  1478. and that

  1479. is not

  1480. portrayed

  1481. as a

  1482. godly

  1483. thing

  1484. it

  1485. is

  1486. sin

  1487. it

  1488. is

  1489. portrayed

  1490. in that

  1491. part of

  1492. scripture

  1493. as a

  1494. wicked

  1495. thing

  1496. why

  1497. because he

  1498. was going

  1499. against

  1500. the God

  1501. of truth

  1502. he's going

  1503. against

  1504. the will

  1505. of God

  1506. so what

  1507. is of

  1508. the essence

  1509. here

  1510. is not

  1511. merely

  1512. accurate

  1513. factual

  1514. reporting

  1515. but what

  1516. is it

  1517. that is

  1518. in your

  1519. heart

  1520. for out

  1521. of the

  1522. abundance

  1523. of the

  1524. heart

  1525. the mouth

  1526. speaks

  1527. out of

  1528. the heart

  1529. come

  1530. evil

  1531. thoughts

  1532. murder

  1533. adultery

  1534. sexual

  1535. immorality

  1536. theft

  1537. false

  1538. witness

  1539. slander

  1540. what

  1541. matters

  1542. what

  1543. God's

  1544. after

  1545. is

  1546. your

  1547. heart

  1548. where's

  1549. your

  1550. heart

  1551. in

  1552. your

  1553. truth

  1554. telling

  1555. one

  1556. can

  1557. say

  1558. something

  1559. that

  1560. is

  1561. 100%

  1562. factually

  1563. accurate

  1564. yet

  1565. be

  1566. false

  1567. to

  1568. the

  1569. truth

  1570. because

  1571. of

  1572. his

  1573. evil

  1574. intent

  1575. you

  1576. can

  1577. be

  1578. 100%

  1579. factually

  1580. accurate

  1581. about

  1582. what

  1583. you

  1584. tell

  1585. your

  1586. friend

  1587. about

  1588. another

  1589. friend

  1590. and

  1591. yet

  1592. be

  1593. 100%

  1594. in

  1595. the

  1596. wrong

  1597. because

  1598. of

  1599. your

  1600. evil

  1601. intent

  1602. William

  1603. Blake

  1604. writes

  1605. in his

  1606. poem

  1607. Auguries

  1608. of

  1609. Innocence

  1610. a

  1611. truth

  1612. that's

  1613. told

  1614. with

  1615. bad

  1616. intent

  1617. beats

  1618. all

  1619. the

  1620. lies

  1621. you

  1622. can

  1623. invent

  1624. so

  1625. here

  1626. are

  1627. the

  1628. heart

  1629. searching

  1630. questions

  1631. that

  1632. you

  1633. ought

  1634. to

  1635. be

  1636. asking

  1637. yourself

  1638. that

  1639. we

  1640. all

  1641. ought

  1642. to

  1643. ask

  1644. ourselves

  1645. when

  1646. you're

  1647. trying

  1648. to

  1649. figure

  1650. out

  1651. am

  1652. I

  1653. justified

  1654. in

  1655. this

  1656. scenario

  1657. to

  1658. not

  1659. tell

  1660. the

  1661. whole

  1662. truth

  1663. ask

  1664. yourself

  1665. does

  1666. your

  1667. motivation

  1668. stem

  1669. from

  1670. the

  1671. fear

  1672. of

  1673. God

  1674. or

  1675. the

  1676. fear

  1677. of

  1678. man

  1679. if

  1680. you're

  1681. doing

  1682. it

  1683. not

  1684. to

  1685. please

  1686. God

  1687. but

  1688. to

  1689. please

  1690. men

  1691. you're

  1692. doing

  1693. the

  1694. wrong

  1695. thing

  1696. Proverbs

  1697. 8

  1698. 13

  1699. teaches

  1700. us

  1701. that

  1702. the

  1703. cure

  1704. for

  1705. perverted

  1706. speech

  1707. which

  1708. God

  1709. hates

  1710. is

  1711. the

  1712. fear

  1713. of

  1714. the

  1715. Lord

  1716. humility

  1717. here's

  1718. another

  1719. question

  1720. we can

  1721. ask

  1722. ourselves

  1723. does

  1724. it

  1725. stem

  1726. from

  1727. the

  1728. love

  1729. of

  1730. God

  1731. and

  1732. the

  1733. love

  1734. of

  1735. neighbor

  1736. I

  1737. think

  1738. it's

  1739. important

  1740. to

  1741. keep

  1742. those

  1743. two

  1744. things

  1745. hand

  1746. in

  1747. hand

  1748. because

  1749. sometimes

  1750. I

  1751. think

  1752. we can

  1753. deceive

  1754. ourselves

  1755. into

  1756. thinking

  1757. that

  1758. we're

  1759. actually

  1760. trying

  1761. to

  1762. love

  1763. our

  1764. neighbor

  1765. when

  1766. really

  1767. it

  1768. goes

  1769. against

  1770. God's

  1771. standard

  1772. revealed

  1773. in

  1774. his

  1775. word

  1776. and

  1777. we're

  1778. doing

  1779. it

  1780. out

  1781. of

  1782. fear

  1783. of

  1784. man

  1785. fear

  1786. of

  1787. God

  1788. and

  1789. the

  1790. love

  1791. of

  1792. neighbor

  1793. love

  1794. of

  1795. God

  1796. and

  1797. the

  1798. love

  1799. of

  1800. neighbor

  1801. is

  1802. that

  1803. at

  1804. the

  1805. root

  1806. of

  1807. what

  1808. you're

  1809. trying

  1810. to

  1811. do

  1812. or

  1813. is

  1814. it

  1815. coming

  1816. out

  1817. of

  1818. the

  1819. hatred

  1820. of

  1821. your

  1822. neighbor

  1823. a

  1824. classic

  1825. example

  1826. of

  1827. this

  1828. dilemma

  1829. is

  1830. found

  1831. in

  1832. Corrie

  1833. Ten Boom's

  1834. autobiography

  1835. Hiding

  1836. Place

  1837. beautiful

  1838. biography

  1839. I encourage

  1840. you all

  1841. to read

  1842. it

  1843. Corrie

  1844. Ten Boom

  1845. and her

  1846. sister

  1847. Betsy

  1848. Ten Boom

  1849. were sisters

  1850. members

  1851. of a

  1852. Dutch

  1853. Christian

  1854. family

  1855. that

  1856. boldly

  1857. sheltered

  1858. Jewish

  1859. refugees

  1860. during

  1861. the

  1862. Holocaust

  1863. when

  1864. they

  1865. were

  1866. fleeing

  1867. from

  1868. Nazi

  1869. Germany

  1870. and

  1871. when

  1872. the

  1873. German

  1874. Gestapo

  1875. came to

  1876. their

  1877. house

  1878. and asked

  1879. are you

  1880. sheltering

  1881. any

  1882. Jews

  1883. Corrie

  1884. Ten Boom

  1885. would

  1886. just

  1887. lie

  1888. and

  1889. say

  1890. no

  1891. we're

  1892. not

  1893. sheltering

  1894. any

  1895. Jews

  1896. because

  1897. she

  1898. thought

  1899. that

  1900. that

  1901. was

  1902. okay

  1903. to

  1904. do

  1905. I

  1906. think

  1907. Corrie

  1908. Ten Boom

  1909. is

  1910. right

  1911. in

  1912. that

  1913. situation

  1914. Betsy

  1915. Ten Boom

  1916. however

  1917. was a

  1918. very

  1919. principled

  1920. and

  1921. sincere

  1922. woman

  1923. Corrie

  1924. was

  1925. too

  1926. but

  1927. Betsy

  1928. had

  1929. the

  1930. conviction

  1931. and

  1932. made

  1933. a

  1934. resolution

  1935. many

  1936. years

  1937. ago

  1938. that

  1939. she

  1940. would

  1941. never

  1942. tell

  1943. a

  1944. lie

  1945. when

  1946. the

  1947. Corrie

  1948. wasn't

  1949. home

  1950. Betsy

  1951. was

  1952. the

  1953. one

  1954. who

  1955. was

  1956. answering

  1957. the

  1958. question

  1959. are

  1960. you

  1961. sheltering

  1962. any

  1963. Jews

  1964. in

  1965. your

  1966. house

  1967. she

  1968. said

  1969. yes

  1970. sir

  1971. we

  1972. are

  1973. they're

  1974. hiding

  1975. underneath

  1976. the

  1977. table

  1978. I

  1979. don't

  1980. think

  1981. she's

  1982. being

  1983. legalistic

  1984. in

  1985. this

  1986. situation

  1987. because

  1988. I

  1989. think

  1990. she

  1991. was

  1992. utterly

  1993. sincere

  1994. she

  1995. was

  1996. mistaken

  1997. but

  1998. she

  1999. was

  2000. utterly

  2001. sincere

  2002. and

  2003. I

  2004. don't

  2005. want

  2006. to

  2007. condemn

  2008. her

  2009. because

  2010. I

  2011. don't

  2012. know

  2013. how many

  2014. of

  2015. us

  2016. would

  2017. have

  2018. the

  2019. courage

  2020. to

  2021. shelter

  2022. Jews

  2023. in

  2024. a

  2025. situation

  2026. like

  2027. that

  2028. first

  2029. of

  2030. and

  2031. how many

  2032. of

  2033. us

  2034. out

  2035. of

  2036. that

  2037. group

  2038. would

  2039. have

  2040. the

  2041. courage

  2042. not

  2043. only

  2044. to

  2045. shelter

  2046. the

  2047. Jews

  2048. but

  2049. have

  2050. the

  2051. guts

  2052. to

  2053. tell

  2054. them

  2055. yes

  2056. I'm

  2057. hiding

  2058. the

  2059. Jews

  2060. knowing

  2061. that

  2062. they're

  2063. going

  2064. to send

  2065. you

  2066. to

  2067. the

  2068. extermination

  2069. camp

  2070. next

  2071. so

  2072. I'm

  2073. not

  2074. condemning

  2075. her

  2076. and

  2077. I

  2078. think

  2079. God

  2080. knew

  2081. her

  2082. sincerity

  2083. because

  2084. I think

  2085. God

  2086. honors

  2087. her

  2088. by

  2089. delivering

  2090. them

  2091. from

  2092. that

  2093. pickle

  2094. because

  2095. that

  2096. German

  2097. soldier

  2098. is

  2099. just

  2100. flabbergasted

  2101. Like

  2102. what?

  2103. He

  2104. thinks

  2105. oh

  2106. you're

  2107. pulling

  2108. my

  2109. leg!

  2110. He

  2111. thinks

  2112. she's

  2113. being

  2114. sarcastic!

  2115. He's

  2116. like

  2117. you're

  2118. making

  2119. a

  2120. mockery

  2121. of

  2122. me!

  2123. So

  2124. he

  2125. says

  2126. he

  2127. thinks

  2128. !

  2129. He'll

  2130. be

  2131. humiliated

  2132. and

  2133. made

  2134. a

  2135. fool

  2136. of

  2137. if

  2138. he

  2139. searches

  2140. underneath

  2141. the

  2142. table

  2143. which

  2144. had

  2145. the

  2146. trap

  2147. door

  2148. underneath

  2149. where

  2150. the

  2151. chamber

  2152. that

  2153. they

  2154. were

  2155. hiding

  2156. so

  2157. he

  2158. searches

  2159. the

  2160. entire

  2161. house

  2162. but

  2163. not

  2164. there

  2165. because

  2166. that

  2167. would

  2168. be

  2169. too

  2170. embarrassing

  2171. to do

  2172. so

  2173. they

  2174. survive

  2175. sometimes

  2176. when you

  2177. make a

  2178. mistake

  2179. if

  2180. you

  2181. are

  2182. sincere

  2183. I

  2184. think

  2185. God

  2186. still

  2187. delivers

  2188. you

  2189. and

  2190. helps

  2191. you

  2192. all

  2193. that

  2194. to

  2195. say

  2196. there

  2197. are

  2198. situations

  2199. where

  2200. it

  2201. is

  2202. okay

  2203. not

  2204. to

  2205. be

  2206. 100%

  2207. factually

  2208. accurate

  2209. but

  2210. whether

  2211. it's

  2212. okay

  2213. for you

  2214. to do

  2215. that

  2216. or not

  2217. depends

  2218. on

  2219. where

  2220. your

  2221. heart

  2222. is

  2223. before

  2224. God

  2225. second

  2226. is there

  2227. ever a

  2228. situation

  2229. where it

  2230. is okay

  2231. to take

  2232. an oath

  2233. let's say

  2234. in the

  2235. courtroom

  2236. I believe

  2237. the biblical

  2238. answer to that

  2239. question

  2240. also

  2241. is

  2242. yes

  2243. on

  2244. several

  2245. occasions

  2246. in his

  2247. letters

  2248. the apostle

  2249. Paul

  2250. takes

  2251. an oath

  2252. and puts

  2253. the recipients

  2254. of his

  2255. letter

  2256. under oath

  2257. does this

  2258. in

  2259. Romans

  2260. 9

  2261. 1

  2262. 2

  2263. Corinthians

  2264. 123

  2265. Galatians

  2266. 120

  2267. 1

  2268. Thessalonians

  2269. 5

  2270. 27

  2271. not only

  2272. that

  2273. in

  2274. Revelation

  2275. 10

  2276. 5

  2277. to 7

  2278. a mighty

  2279. angel

  2280. of God

  2281. raises

  2282. his right

  2283. hand

  2284. to heaven

  2285. and swears

  2286. by him

  2287. who lives

  2288. forever

  2289. and ever

  2290. and created

  2291. heaven

  2292. and the

  2293. earth

  2294. namely

  2295. by God

  2296. an angel

  2297. does that

  2298. even more

  2299. decisively

  2300. Jesus

  2301. himself

  2302. is placed

  2303. under oath

  2304. by the high

  2305. priest

  2306. Caiaphas

  2307. in Matthew

    Matthew 26:63

  2308. 26

  2309. verses

  2310. 63

  2311. 64

  2312. the priest

  2313. says to

  2314. Jesus

  2315. I adjure

  2316. you

  2317. by the

  2318. living

  2319. God

  2320. that's an

  2321. oath

  2322. formula

  2323. tell us

  2324. if you

  2325. are the

  2326. Christ

  2327. the son

  2328. of God

  2329. and in

  2330. that

  2331. situation

  2332. Jesus

  2333. doesn't

  2334. say

  2335. oh

  2336. no

  2337. no

  2338. no

  2339. that's

  2340. bad

  2341. you

  2342. should

  2343. not

  2344. be

  2345. doing

  2346. that

  2347. I

  2348. cannot

  2349. take

  2350. an

  2351. oath

  2352. up to

  2353. that

  2354. point

  2355. Jesus

  2356. was

  2357. completely

  2358. silent

  2359. he

  2360. would

  2361. not

  2362. answer

  2363. their

  2364. false

  2365. accusations

  2366. But

  2367. after

  2368. being

  2369. put

  2370. under

  2371. oath

  2372. by God's

  2373. name

  2374. Jesus

  2375. finally

  2376. answers

  2377. the

  2378. high

  2379. priest

  2380. and

  2381. he

  2382. says

  2383. you

  2384. have

  2385. said

  2386. so

  2387. but

  2388. I

  2389. tell

  2390. you

  2391. from

  2392. now

  2393. on

  2394. you

  2395. will

  2396. see

  2397. the

  2398. son

  2399. of

  2400. man

  2401. seated

  2402. at

  2403. the

  2404. right

  2405. hand

  2406. of

  2407. God

  2408. right

  2409. hand

  2410. of

  2411. power

  2412. and

  2413. coming

  2414. on

  2415. the

  2416. cloud

  2417. of

  2418. heaven

  2419. so

  2420. Jesus

  2421. takes

  2422. an

  2423. oath

  2424. this

  2425. is

  2426. why

  2427. I

  2428. think

  2429. that

  2430. Quakers

  2431. and

  2432. Mennonites

  2433. and

  2434. Amish

  2435. and

  2436. brethren

  2437. who

  2438. are

  2439. Christian

  2440. brothers

  2441. and sisters

  2442. !

  2443. circumstance

  2444. take

  2445. an

  2446. oath

  2447. not

  2448. even

  2449. in

  2450. court

  2451. I

  2452. think

  2453. they're

  2454. mistaken

  2455. in

  2456. the

  2457. same

  2458. way

  2459. that

  2460. even

  2461. though

  2462. in

  2463. God's

  2464. standard

  2465. ideal

  2466. we

  2467. should

  2468. never

  2469. divorce

  2470. 1 Corinthians

  2471. 7

  2472. makes

  2473. provision

  2474. for

  2475. divorce

  2476. because

  2477. what

  2478. are

  2479. you

  2480. going

  2481. to

  2482. do

  2483. when

  2484. your

  2485. unbelieving

  2486. spouse

  2487. insists

  2488. on

  2489. it

  2490. and

  2491. abandons

  2492. you

  2493. and

  2494. separates

  2495. from

  2496. you

  2497. and

  2498. divorces

  2499. you

  2500. likewise

  2501. here

  2502. should

  2503. we

  2504. on our

  2505. own

  2506. accord

  2507. make

  2508. oath

  2509. and

  2510. take

  2511. oath

  2512. no

  2513. I

  2514. don't

  2515. think

  2516. that's

  2517. what

  2518. we

  2519. should

  2520. do

  2521. but

  2522. I

  2523. do

  2524. believe

  2525. that

  2526. there

  2527. are

  2528. circumstances

  2529. in

  2530. situations

  2531. like

  2532. when

  2533. you're

  2534. in

  2535. court

  2536. where

  2537. you're

  2538. solemnly

  2539. adjured

  2540. to

  2541. tell

  2542. the

  2543. truth

  2544. I

  2545. do

  2546. think

  2547. it's

  2548. okay

  2549. and

  2550. it's

  2551. not

  2552. sinful

  2553. for

  2554. us

  2555. to

  2556. be

  2557. placed

  2558. under

  2559. oath

  2560. that

  2561. brings

  2562. me

  2563. to

  2564. my

  2565. final

  2566. point

  2567. remember

  2568. God's

  2569. oath

  2570. God

  2571. himself

  2572. takes

  2573. an

  2574. oath

  2575. when

  2576. he

  2577. enters

  2578. into

  2579. covenant

  2580. !

  2581. with

  2582. his

  2583. people

  2584. not

  2585. because

  2586. he

  2587. needs

  2588. to

  2589. he

  2590. doesn't

  2591. need

  2592. to

  2593. place

  2594. himself

  2595. under

  2596. oath

  2597. because

  2598. God

  2599. never

  2600. lies

  2601. we

  2602. have

  2603. no

  2604. reason

  2605. to

  2606. distrust

  2607. God

  2608. at

  2609. all

  2610. and

  2611. yet

  2612. God

  2613. still

  2614. takes

  2615. an

  2616. oath

  2617. to

  2618. accommodate

  2619. our

  2620. sinfulness

  2621. and

  2622. unbelief

  2623. because

  2624. we're

  2625. so

  2626. mistrusting

  2627. of

  2628. people

  2629. and

  2630. of

  2631. God

  2632. even

  2633. because

  2634. we

  2635. lie

  2636. to

  2637. each

  2638. other

  2639. all

  2640. the

  2641. time

  2642. God

  2643. places

  2644. himself

  2645. under

  2646. oath

  2647. in

  2648. Psalm

    Psalms 110:4

  2649. 110

  2650. verse

  2651. 4

  2652. this

  2653. is

  2654. a

  2655. prophecy

  2656. concerning

  2657. the

  2658. Messiah

  2659. the

  2660. Lord

  2661. has

  2662. sworn

  2663. and

  2664. will

  2665. not

  2666. change

  2667. his

  2668. mind

  2669. you

  2670. are

  2671. a

  2672. priest

  2673. forever

  2674. after

  2675. the

  2676. order

  2677. of

  2678. Melchizedek

  2679. again

  2680. he

  2681. says

  2682. of

  2683. David

  2684. in

  2685. Psalm

  2686. 89

  2687. and

  2688. Psalm

  2689. 132

  2690. I

  2691. have

  2692. made

  2693. a

  2694. covenant

  2695. with

  2696. my

  2697. chosen

  2698. one

  2699. I

  2700. have

  2701. sworn

  2702. to

  2703. David

  2704. my

  2705. servant

  2706. what

  2707. did

  2708. he

  2709. promise

  2710. to

  2711. David

  2712. again

  2713. that

  2714. his

  2715. offspring

  2716. the

  2717. messianic

  2718. king

  2719. !

  2720. would

  2721. reign

  2722. on

  2723. from

  2724. sacrificing

  2725. his

  2726. only

  2727. son

  2728. Isaac

  2729. God

  2730. says

  2731. to

  2732. him

  2733. after

  2734. supplying

  2735. a

  2736. ram

  2737. as

  2738. a

  2739. substitute

  2740. sacrifice

  2741. by

  2742. myself

  2743. I

  2744. have

  2745. sworn

  2746. declares

  2747. the

  2748. Lord

  2749. because

  2750. you

  2751. have

  2752. done

  2753. this

  2754. and

  2755. have

  2756. not

  2757. withheld

  2758. your

  2759. son

  2760. your

  2761. only

  2762. son

  2763. I

  2764. will

  2765. surely

  2766. bless

  2767. you

  2768. and

  2769. I

  2770. will

  2771. surely

  2772. multiply

  2773. your

  2774. offspring

  2775. as

  2776. the

  2777. stars

  2778. of

  2779. heaven

  2780. and

  2781. as

  2782. a

  2783. sand

  2784. that

  2785. is

  2786. on

  2787. the

  2788. seashore

  2789. and

  2790. your

  2791. offspring

  2792. shall

  2793. possess

  2794. the

  2795. and

  2796. who

  2797. is

  2798. the

  2799. offspring

  2800. through

  2801. whom

  2802. the

  2803. enemies

  2804. of

  2805. God

  2806. will

  2807. be

  2808. defeated

  2809. and

  2810. the

  2811. nations

  2812. of

  2813. the

  2814. earth

  2815. will

  2816. be

  2817. blessed

  2818. again

  2819. the

  2820. answer

  2821. is

  2822. Jesus

  2823. Christ

  2824. our

  2825. Lord

  2826. he's

  2827. the

  2828. one

  2829. who

  2830. fulfills

  2831. every

  2832. single

  2833. one

  2834. of

  2835. the

  2836. oaths

  2837. that

  2838. God

  2839. take

  2840. in

  2841. entering

  2842. into

  2843. covenant

  2844. with

  2845. his

  2846. people

  2847. so

  2848. he

  2849. says

  2850. in

  2851. Hebrews

  2852. 6

  2853. 13

  2854. to

  2855. 20

  2856. for

  2857. when

  2858. God

  2859. made

  2860. a

  2861. promise

  2862. to

  2863. Abraham

  2864. since

  2865. he

  2866. had

  2867. no

  2868. one

  2869. greater

  2870. by

  2871. whom

  2872. to

  2873. swear

  2874. he

  2875. swore

  2876. by

  2877. himself

  2878. saying

  2879. surely

  2880. I

  2881. will

  2882. bless

  2883. you

  2884. and

  2885. multiply

  2886. you

  2887. and

  2888. thus

  2889. Abraham

  2890. having

  2891. patiently

  2892. waited

  2893. obtained

  2894. the

  2895. promise

  2896. for

  2897. people

  2898. swear

  2899. by

  2900. something

  2901. greater

  2902. than

  2903. themselves

  2904. and

  2905. in

  2906. all

  2907. their

  2908. disputes

  2909. an

  2910. oath

  2911. is

  2912. final

  2913. for

  2914. confirmation

  2915. purpose

  2916. he

  2917. guaranteed

  2918. it
