  1. Good morning. It's great to worship with you.

  2. And for those of you who know me, my name is Sean.

  3. And it's my joy and privilege to preach God's word to you this morning.

  4. ! Please turn with me in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 5, verse 43 to 48.

    Matthew 5:43–48

  5. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  6. We'd love to give you a copy to use.

  7. We are coming today to the last and climactic section

  8. of the six contrasts that Jesus sets up

  9. between the contemporary Jewish misapplication of the Old Testament law

  10. and his true interpretation and fulfillment of the Old Testament law.

  11. And so this is the sixth and final contrast that he sets up.

  12. We're in Matthew chapter 5, verse 43 to 48.

    Matthew 5:43–48

  13. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  14. Heavenly Father, we love you because you loved us first.

  15. And when you command us to love our enemies,

  16. we know that you do not command us to do something you haven't already done for us.

  17. So, Lord, we ask for an outpouring of your love by your Spirit

  18. into our hearts this morning

  19. so that out of the overflow of that love,

  20. we might love even our enemies.

  21. In Jesus' name we pray.

  22. Amen.

  23. If you're able, please stand for the reading of God's word.

  24. We stand to honor God as we read from his word.

  25. From Matthew 5, 43 to 48.

  26. You have heard that it was said,

  27. you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  28. But I say to you,

  29. love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you

  30. so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.

  31. For he makes his son rise on the evil and on the good

  32. and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

  33. For if you love those who love you,

  34. what reward do you have?

  35. Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

  36. And if you greet only your brothers,

  37. what more are you doing than others?

  38. Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

  39. You, therefore, must be perfect

  40. as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  41. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  42. Please be seated.

  43. Who doesn't want to have only friends and no enemies?

  44. But unfortunately, in this world, we do have enemies.

  45. People who are hostile toward us.

  46. People who, for one reason or another,

  47. want to see us fail.

  48. People who wish ill on you.

  49. Even more sadly, sometimes,

  50. the enemies in our own lives

  51. are people who are close to us.

  52. Jesus says in Matthew 10, verse 36,

    Matthew 10:36

  53. and a person's enemies will be those of his own household.

  54. How should we treat such people?

  55. This passage flows naturally from verses 38 to 42,

  56. in which Jesus taught us never to repay evil for evil,

  57. but as sinful people that we are,

  58. we always tend to limit and circumscribe God's commands,

  59. to contain it and make it manageable.

  60. And that's exactly what they did with this command

  61. to not resist the evil person.

  62. Jesus' audience was likely thinking to themselves,

  63. sure, that of course we should love our friends and neighbors.

  64. We shouldn't repay evil for evil to our neighbors and friends.

  65. But surely that doesn't apply to our enemies.

  66. They are, by definition, hostiles.

  67. People who hate us.

  68. People who are in conflict with us,

  69. and contending against us.

  70. So surely that doesn't apply to them.

  71. But Jesus doesn't leave that loophole for us.

  72. He commands us explicitly,

  73. love your enemies,

  74. like father,

  75. like son.

  76. So I'm gonna talk about this passage in three sections.

  77. First, I'm gonna talk about the rule.

  78. Secondly, I'll talk about the reward.

  79. And third, I'll talk about the resemblance

  80. that God calls us to.

  81. First, let's talk about the rule that Jesus gives us.

  82. Once again, he quotes from the Old Testament to start off.

  83. This time, the quote comes from Leviticus 19,

    Leviticus 19:17

  84. verse 17 and 18.

  85. It says,

  86. If you examine verse 43 in light of this Old Testament passage,

  87. against the sons of your own people,

  88. but you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  89. I am the Lord.

  90. If you examine verse 43 in light of this Old Testament passage,

  91. the first half looks good.

  92. You shall love your neighbor.

  93. It does leave out a phrase,

  94. you shall love your neighbor as yourself,

  95. but I don't think that's meant to be a significant detail,

  96. because if you look at the Jewish scribe in Mark 12, 33,

  97. or the Jewish lawyer in Luke 10, 27,

  98. they both mention love your neighbor as yourself.

  99. So I think the Jews of Jesus,

  100. they understood that,

  101. and here Jesus is just paraphrasing what they said.

  102. The problem is not with the first half,

  103. love your neighbor,

  104. but with the second half.

  105. They were saying,

  106. You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  107. In Leviticus 19 that we just read,

  108. it doesn't say hate your enemy.

  109. So where did they get that idea,

  110. that that was the biblical truth?

  111. In Leviticus 19, 17 to 18,

  112. he says,

  113. You shall not hate your brother,

  114. and that's the same command as,

  115. You shall love your neighbor.

  116. They understood that correctly,

  117. that hate is the opposite of love.

  118. But because the object of the command in Leviticus 19

  119. is your brother and your neighbor,

  120. the sons of your own people, it says,

  121. they understood this command to apply only to their fellow Jews.

  122. Once again, this is the natural, sinful human tendency

  123. to be legalistic, to limit and contain God's law.

  124. Instead of trying to understand the heart of the law,

  125. the spirit of the law,

  126. instead of trying to obey the law to its fullest extent,

  127. they were legalistically obeying only the superficial letter of the law

  128. so they could say,

  129. Oh, I did it.

  130. Check that box.

  131. You can see this clearly in the community rule

  132. of the first century Jewish sect called the Essenes.

  133. It says there,

  134. You should love all that God has chosen

  135. and hate all that he has rejected.

  136. Love all the sons of light,

  137. each according to his law in God's design,

  138. and hate all the sons of darkness,

  139. each according to his guilt in God's vengeance.

  140. Here's another example in the Halakha,

  141. which is a collection of Jewish laws

  142. derived from both the written and the oral laws.

  143. Rabbi Maimonides writes,

  144. With regard to a Gentile idolater,

  145. it is forbidden to save their lives

  146. if their lives are threatened.

  147. For example,

  148. if such a person fell into the sea,

  149. one should not rescue him.

  150. Leviticus 19.16 states,

  151. Do not stand idly by

  152. while your brother's blood is at stake.

  153. This does not apply

  154. with regard to such individuals

  155. because they are not your brothers.

  156. Admittedly,

  157. this is from the latter centuries,

  158. but this is the exact sentiment

  159. that Jesus is addressing during his day.

  160. Jesus is confronting this attitude

  161. and showing us

  162. that love your neighbor

  163. and hate your enemy

  164. is not a faithful interpretation

  165. of the Old Testament teaching.

  166. In fact,

  167. if they looked closely,

  168. in that very same chapter of Leviticus 19,

  169. if you go down a few verses later,

  170. in verse 34,

  171. it says,

  172. You shall treat the stranger

  173. who sojourns with you

  174. as the native among you,

  175. and you shall love him as yourself.

  176. For you were strangers

  177. in the land of Egypt.

  178. I am the Lord your God.

  179. God doesn't allow us to restrict the word neighbor

  180. only to our brothers or fellow Jews

  181. or people who share our ethnicity

  182. or race or whatever

  183. because God commands the Israelites

  184. to treat the stranger and the sojourner

  185. like the natives, it says,

  186. to love them as yourself.

  187. The Old Testament,

  188. like the New Testament,

  189. commands us to love our enemies.

  190. Here's another example.

  191. Deuteronomy 22, verse 1.

    Deuteronomy 22:1

  192. It says,

  193. You shall not see your brother's ox

  194. or his sheep going astray

  195. and ignore them.

  196. You shall take them back to your brother.

  197. This is how you should love your brother,

  198. your neighbor,

  199. a fellow Israelite.

  200. But look at a similar command

  201. in Exodus 23, verse 4.

    Exodus 23:4

  202. If you meet your enemy's ox

  203. or his donkey going astray,

  204. you should let it go astray

  205. as far as it can.

  206. No, that's not what it says.

  207. It says the exact same thing

  208. that it said that you should do

  209. to your brother and to your neighbor.

  210. Bring it back to him.

  211. The Old Testament demands

  212. the same loving treatment

  213. of your enemy as your brother.

  214. Sometimes, even as Christians,

  215. we can believe the lie

  216. that the Old Testament is,

  217. the Old Testament ethic is sub-Christian,

  218. that it's barbaric,

  219. but that cannot be true

  220. because the God of the New Testament

  221. is the God of the Old Testament

  222. and he doesn't change.

  223. Let me give you an example

  224. from the New Testament,

  225. the classic text about loving our enemies,

  226. Romans 12, 17 to 21.

  227. Repay no one evil for evil,

  228. but give thought to do

  229. what is honorable in the sight of all.

  230. If possible, so far as it depends on you,

  231. live peaceably with all.

  232. Beloved, never avenge yourselves,

  233. but leave it to the wrath of God.

  234. For it is written, vengeance is mine.

  235. I will repay, says the Lord.

  236. To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry,

  237. feed him.

  238. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

  239. For by so doing,

  240. you will heap burning coals on his head.

  241. Do not be overcome by evil,

  242. but overcome evil with good.

  243. If you could leave that up there for a little bit.

  244. You could see two quotes there.

  245. I think the first quote is in the previous slide.

  246. The first quote was,

  247. vengeance is mine.

  248. Where is that from?

  249. That's from the Old Testament.

  250. Deuteronomy 32, verse 35.

    Deuteronomy 32:35

  251. What about the command?

  252. If your enemy is hungry,

  253. give him bread to eat.

  254. If he is thirsty,

  255. give him water to drink for you.

  256. He will heap burning coals on his head.

  257. Where does that come from?

  258. The Old Testament.

  259. Proverbs 25, 21 to 22.

  260. The New Testament command to love our enemies

  261. comes from the Old Testament.

  262. But what does it mean to heap burning coals on his head?

  263. Having burning coals heaped on your head

  264. is not a good thing.

  265. In Psalm 140, verse 9 and 10,

    Psalms 140:9

  266. when David is praying to God

  267. for deliverance from his enemies,

  268. he prays,

  269. ask for the head of those who surround me.

  270. Let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them.

  271. Let burning coals fall upon them.

  272. Let them be cast into fire,

  273. into miry pits,

  274. no more to rise.

  275. So having burning coals heaped on your head

  276. is not a good thing.

  277. It's a bad thing.

  278. But that raises a question, doesn't it?

  279. Doesn't that sound kind of vindictive

  280. and unloving?

  281. Didn't Jesus just tell us to love our enemies?

  282. It would be vindictive and unloving

  283. if this were referring to

  284. our own personal vengeance.

  285. But in scripture,

  286. burning coals always represent divine judgment.

  287. In the vision of Ezekiel,

  288. prophet Ezekiel,

  289. in Ezekiel chapter 10,

    Ezekiel 10:1–8

  290. verses 1 to 8,

  291. an angelic being a man in linen cloth

  292. takes burning coals from where?

  293. From the throne of God.

  294. And then he scatters it upon Jerusalem

  295. as God's judgment over this sinful city.

  296. Burning coals are the judgments of God.

  297. By repaying wickedness done toward us with kindness,

  298. by refusing to take vengeance into our own hands,

  299. we store up God's wrath upon our enemy's head.

  300. It's like what we see in the book of Revelation.

  301. In Revelation 5, verse 8,

    Revelation 5:8

  302. we are told that the golden censer

  303. that is at the altar of God,

  304. it's heavenly throne room,

  305. it's the prayers of the saints.

  306. It's prayers of the saints

  307. that are described metaphorically

  308. as a golden censer.

  309. And these saints are praying to God,

  310. oh Lord,

  311. how long

  312. before you will judge

  313. and avenge our blood

  314. on those who dwell on the earth?

  315. They were martyred,

  316. so they did not take vengeance

  317. into their own hands.

  318. They did not resist the ones who are evil.

  319. They paid the ultimate price

  320. and were killed for their faith in Jesus Christ.

  321. So they love their enemies

  322. and they're crying out for vengeance

  323. because that was not right.

  324. That was wrong.

  325. And they're crying out

  326. and these prayers,

  327. that's the golden censer

  328. later in Revelation 8,

  329. an angel takes the golden censer

  330. and then,

  331. which is the prayers of the saints,

  332. and then he puts the fire from the altar,

  333. aka the burning coals,

  334. into that censer

  335. and then he spreads it,

  336. which then becomes

  337. the seventh seal

  338. of God's judgment.

  339. When we refuse

  340. to avenge ourselves,

  341. we leave it to the wrath of God

  342. and God's justice

  343. will indeed

  344. have its way.

  345. Does this mean then

  346. that when we

  347. repay our enemies'

  348. evil with kindness,

  349. that we should do so

  350. gleefully?

  351. Ah, you think

  352. I'm being nice to you.

  353. I'm just heaping

  354. burning coals

  355. upon your head.

  356. No, of course not.

  357. That's the wrong attitude

  358. because we're supposed

  359. to love our enemies.

  360. That's the command.

  361. Our refusal

  362. to avenge ourselves

  363. should be an expression

  364. of love for them.

  365. Proverbs 24, 17 to 18

  366. warns about that precisely.

  367. Do not rejoice

  368. when your enemy falls

  369. and let not your heart

  370. be glad

  371. when he stumbles.

  372. Lest the Lord

  373. see it

  374. and be displeased

  375. and turn away

  376. his anger from him.

  377. Our attitude

  378. instead should mirror

  379. God's attitude

  380. towards sinners.

  381. In Romans 2,

    Romans 2:4–5

  382. verse 4 to 5,

  383. it says that God

  384. has forbearance

  385. and patience

  386. and kindness

  387. toward evildoers

  388. and that that kindness

  389. is meant to lead us

  390. to repentance.

  391. But in the immediately

  392. following verse,

  393. it says that,

  394. but if they do not repent,

  395. if they are impenitent

  396. and hard,

  397. then they are storing up

  398. wrath for themselves

  399. on the day of wrath

  400. when God's righteous judgment

  401. will be revealed.

  402. Similarly then,

  403. we love our enemies

  404. with kindness

  405. and forbearance

  406. and patience

  407. in hopes that we might,

  408. by our kindness,

  409. lead them to repentance.

  410. repentance.

  411. But if they refuse

  412. to repent in the end,

  413. you can be assured

  414. that there will be justice,

  415. that burning coals

  416. have been being heaped up.

  417. In fact,

  418. I would argue,

  419. though this might seem

  420. counterintuitive

  421. to some of us,

  422. that a robust faith

  423. in divine vengeance

  424. is necessary

  425. in order for us

  426. to love our enemies

  427. and not avenge ourselves.

  428. This is how we make sense

  429. of parts of scripture

  430. like the conquest of Canaan

  431. when God orders

  432. the destruction

  433. of the wicked nations

  434. as well as

  435. the imprecatory psalms,

  436. the imprecatory psalms

  437. where the psalmist

  438. invoke curses

  439. of God's judgment

  440. upon the enemies of God.

  441. These are never intended

  442. to be personal vengeance,

  443. but prayers

  444. for divine vengeance.

  445. Let me give you

  446. an example

  447. of an imprecatory psalm.

  448. Psalm 139,

  449. 19 to 22.

  450. David prays,

  451. Oh,

  452. that you would slay

  453. the wicked,

  454. O God.

  455. O men of blood,

  456. depart from me.

  457. They speak against you

  458. with malicious intent.

  459. Your enemies

  460. take your name in vain.

  461. Do I not hate

  462. those who hate you,

  463. O Lord?

  464. And do I not loathe

  465. those who rise up

  466. against you?

  467. I hate them

  468. with complete hatred.

  469. I count them

  470. my enemies.

  471. David says

  472. he hates

  473. his enemies,

  474. these enemies.

  475. Doesn't that contradict

  476. Jesus' teaching?

  477. I don't think it does

  478. because

  479. of a couple reasons.

  480. First,

  481. it's clear from the context

  482. that these are not

  483. his personal enemies.

  484. They are enemies

  485. of the Lord God.

  486. They speak against God.

  487. They take God's name

  488. in vain.

  489. The hatred

  490. that David feels

  491. is not a sinful

  492. personal spite

  493. or hatred

  494. toward his personal enemy

  495. but a righteous anger

  496. in response to sinners

  497. who rebel against God.

  498. Righteous indignation

  499. toward the enemies of God.

  500. He is not motivated

  501. by a personal vendetta.

  502. He's consumed instead

  503. like Jesus

  504. when he drove

  505. the money changers

  506. out of the temple.

  507. He's consumed

  508. by the zeal

  509. for the glory of God.

  510. In fact,

  511. David is so certain

  512. of his integrity

  513. when he prays this

  514. that later on

  515. in that same psalm

  516. he asks God,

  517. come search me.

  518. Search me

  519. and know my heart.

  520. See if there's

  521. any grievous way in me.

  522. And second,

  523. David is not taking

  524. vengeance

  525. into his own hands

  526. in this situation.

  527. He is simply

  528. praying for God's justice.

  529. Prayer for God's justice

  530. and love for our enemies

  531. are not mutually exclusive.

  532. Yes,

  533. we should love our enemies.

  534. And we should pray

  535. for those who persecute us.

  536. We should do good to them.

  537. But when injustice

  538. cannot be righted,

  539. when injustice

  540. is not righted,

  541. it is morally imperative

  542. for us

  543. to pray for God's justice

  544. for the sake

  545. of the vindication

  546. of God's name,

  547. not for our sake.

  548. If you think about it,

  549. whenever we pray,

  550. Marantha,

  551. whenever we pray,

  552. come Lord Jesus,

  553. justice,

  554. we're actually praying

  555. for the judgment

  556. of the wicked

  557. because Jesus promises

  558. that when he returns

  559. that he will bring justice

  560. and avenge

  561. the righteous.

  562. We are longing

  563. for God's justice

  564. and vindication

  565. whenever we cry,

  566. how long,

  567. oh Lord?

  568. if we have a hard time

  569. stomaching that kind of

  570. cry for divine vengeance,

  571. it's probably because

  572. we don't take sin

  573. as seriously

  574. as God takes sin.

  575. A.F. Kirkpatrick,

  576. a theologian,

  577. writes on his book,

  578. The Book of Psalms,

  579. men have need

  580. to beware

  581. lest in pity

  582. for the sinner

  583. they condone the sin

  584. or relax

  585. the struggle

  586. against evil.

  587. In Matthew 23,

  588. even Jesus

  589. pronounces woes

  590. on the Pharisees

  591. and the scribes.

  592. There is a time

  593. and place

  594. for the imprecatory

  595. psalms,

  596. but you better

  597. search your heart

  598. because many people

  599. sin in this regard

  600. instead of obeying

  601. God's command

  602. to love our enemies.

  603. How then should we

  604. treat our personal enemies?

  605. People who wish ill

  606. on us

  607. and harm upon us

  608. see how David

  609. treats his personal enemies

  610. which is very different

  611. from the earlier psalm

  612. we looked at in 139.

  613. In Psalm 35,

    Psalms 35:11–16

  614. verse 11 to 16,

  615. he writes that

  616. his enemies

  617. rose up

  618. as malicious witnesses

  619. !

  620. against him,

  621. false witnesses

  622. trying to frame him

  623. and corner him.

  624. They repaid him

  625. evil for good.

  626. They rejoiced

  627. at his stumbling.

  628. They mocked him

  629. and tore at him

  630. without ceasing.

  631. That's how his enemies

  632. treated him.

  633. But,

  634. he says in the same psalm,

  635. when they were sick,

  636. I fasted

  637. and prayed for them.

  638. I went about

  639. as though I grieved

  640. for my friend

  641. or my brother.

  642. That's how we should

  643. treat our personal enemies.

  644. maybe there's a co-worker

  645. or a peer at school

  646. who tends to discredit you,

  647. is always

  648. maybe taking,

  649. stealing credit from you,

  650. engaged in this

  651. one-upmanship

  652. against you,

  653. delighting in your failures

  654. and rejoicing

  655. in his triumphs over you.

  656. Instead of

  657. harboring this selfish ambition

  658. and rivalry

  659. and trying to sabotage them,

  660. love your enemies

  661. by helping them,

  662. by seeking their success,

  663. by praying for them.

  664. Maybe you have

  665. a manipulative boss

  666. who guilt trips you,

  667. pushes you around,

  668. all to advance

  669. his own personal agenda.

  670. Makes you do

  671. all the hard work,

  672. but when it's time

  673. to take credit,

  674. he takes the project

  675. for himself.

  676. Instead of repaying him

  677. evil for evil

  678. by putting in

  679. minimal effort

  680. and undermining your boss

  681. at every turn

  682. by second-guessing

  683. every decision he makes

  684. and then gossiping

  685. about him behind his back,

  686. do your work,

  687. love your enemies,

  688. do your work

  689. with diligence

  690. and wish for your boss' success.

  691. love your friends.

  692. Maybe you have a friend

  693. who betrayed your confidence,

  694. but you resolve,

  695. instead of lashing out,

  696. you resolve to give that friend

  697. the benefit of the doubt

  698. and to continue to speak well

  699. of that friend.

  700. Maybe you've been ghosted

  701. or abandoned

  702. by a loved one.

  703. Maybe you were neglected

  704. by a family member.

  705. Maybe you had a spouse

  706. or a boyfriend

  707. or girlfriend

  708. who was unfaithful to you.

  709. Love your enemies.

  710. You choose to forgive them

  711. and love them

  712. nonetheless.

  713. Love your enemies.

  714. Pray for those

  715. who persecute you.

  716. Prayer is a wonderful

  717. antidote

  718. to personal hatred.

  719. it's really hard

  720. to keep hating someone

  721. that you're praying for.

  722. So pray for your enemies.

  723. While Jesus was being crucified

  724. by wicked men,

  725. Jesus prayed for them

  726. in Luke 23, 34.

  727. Father,

  728. forgive them

  729. for they know not

  730. what they do.

  731. Likewise,

  732. Stephen,

  733. when he was being stoned

  734. to death

  735. by evildoers,

  736. prayed in Acts 7,

    Acts 7:60

  737. verse 60,

  738. Lord,

  739. do not hold this sin

  740. against them.

  741. How can they be

  742. so magnanimous

  743. toward their enemies?

  744. It's because they knew

  745. that they know not

  746. what they do.

  747. They knew

  748. that they were blinded

  749. by Satan,

  750. the ruler of this world,

  751. the spirit that is now

  752. at work in the sons

  753. of disobedience.

  754. So instead of being

  755. vindictive,

  756. they were compassionate

  757. and merciful

  758. toward sinners.

  759. I remember being

  760. particularly affected,

  761. impacted by a testimony

  762. of a pastor

  763. from Rwanda

  764. named Antoine

  765. Ruta Isire.

  766. I heard him

  767. for the first time

  768. at a missions conference.

  769. He grew up

  770. during the Rwandan

  771. genocide in 1994

  772. in one year,

  773. or actually even

  774. less than one year,

  775. in a period

  776. of 100 days.

  777. Rwandan genocide

  778. claimed a million lives.

  779. A million people

  780. killed in 100 days.

  781. As a Tutsi,

  782. Ruta Isire

  783. grew up hating

  784. the Hutus.

  785. The Hutus

  786. had killed

  787. Ruta Isire's father.

  788. Hutus had gotten

  789. Ruta Isire

  790. kicked out of school

  791. when he was 15.

  792. Hutus had made him

  793. lose his teaching job

  794. when he was 25.

  795. Later in his life,

  796. Ruta Isire

  797. finally decided

  798. to open the Bible

  799. that someone

  800. had given to him

  801. that had been

  802. collecting dust

  803. on his shelf,

  804. and God

  805. opened the eyes

  806. of his heart

  807. by his spirit,

  808. and he met Jesus.

  809. He said he

  810. read through

  811. the entire Bible

  812. three times

  813. in six months,

  814. and then he said

  815. to God,

  816. Lord, here I am.

  817. Use me.

  818. He became a pastor.

  819. He started preaching

  820. regularly,

  821. but he still

  822. hated Hutus.

  823. And then one day

  824. he came to this passage

  825. where Jesus prays,

  826. Father,

  827. forgive them

  828. for they know

  829. not what they do.

  830. Ruta Isire

  831. felt convicted

  832. by the Holy Spirit.

  833. He knew God

  834. was telling him,

  835. you need to forgive

  836. the Hutus.

  837. And he was

  838. so resistant

  839. to the idea,

  840. he said that he

  841. yelled out loud

  842. to God,

  843. no!

  844. I will not!

  845. And for the next

  846. two weeks,

  847. he was in a crisis

  848. of faith.

  849. He knew he could

  850. not go on

  851. with his faith

  852. in the Lord Jesus

  853. unless he forgave.

  854. He recalls,

  855. quote,

  856. I made a list

  857. of specific people

  858. that I hated

  859. with cause,

  860. but the Lord

  861. told me

  862. I had no cause

  863. because Jesus

  864. forgave the good

  865. and evil people

  866. upon his crucifixion.

  867. I wept

  868. as I forgave

  869. those I hated.

  870. the most painful

  871. experience

  872. is to forgive,

  873. but I have now

  874. become a reconciler.

  875. After that point,

  876. Ruta Isire

  877. went to prisons,

  878. preached the gospel

  879. to many Hutus

  880. and led them

  881. to the Lord,

  882. expressed the forgiveness

  883. that they can find

  884. in Jesus Christ.

  885. who is it

  886. that you are

  887. having a hard time

  888. forgiving today?

  889. This is the rule

  890. of Christ.

  891. Love your enemies.

  892. Jesus knows

  893. that this is

  894. a hard command

  895. and he's very

  896. gracious to us.

  897. He gives us

  898. not one,

  899. but two motivations

  900. to help us

  901. to do this.

  902. The first motivation

  903. is our heavenly reward.

  904. It's my second point,

  905. the reward.

  906. It says in verses

  907. 46 and 47,

  908. for if you love

  909. those who love you,

  910. what reward

  911. do you have?

  912. Do not even

  913. the tax collectors

  914. do the same.

  915. And if you greet

  916. only your brothers,

  917. what more are you

  918. doing than others?

  919. Do not even

  920. the Gentiles

  921. do the same.

  922. The basic,

  923. ordinary,

  924. natural,

  925. human decency,

  926. Jesus says,

  927. is not enough.

  928. You must do

  929. more than that.

  930. Christians must do

  931. more than what

  932. others are doing.

  933. Our righteousness,

  934. as Jesus said

  935. earlier in chapter 5,

  936. verse 20,

  937. must exceed that

  938. of the scribes

  939. and Pharisees.

  940. Only then can we

  941. expect heavenly reward.

  942. Matthew speaks

  943. of rewards

  944. more frequently

  945. than any other

  946. New Testament author.

  947. earlier in verse 12

  948. of the same chapter,

  949. Jesus said,

  950. rejoice and be glad

  951. when people

  952. persecute you

  953. and see all kinds

  954. of false things,

  955. evil against you

  956. because of me.

  957. Rejoice and be glad

  958. for great is your

  959. reward in heaven

  960. for in the same way

  961. they persecuted

  962. the prophets

  963. who were before you.

  964. In chapter 6,

  965. which Ed will

  966. preach on

  967. in a couple weeks,

  968. Jesus speaks

  969. repeatedly

  970. about the importance

  971. of practicing

  972. our righteousness

  973. in secret

  974. rather than for show.

  975. He says that

  976. if we are seen

  977. doing our good works

  978. and admired

  979. and praised

  980. by people as a result,

  981. then he says

  982. you will have no reward

  983. from your father

  984. in heaven

  985. because you already

  986. received your reward

  987. here on earth

  988. by men.

  989. This is helpful

  990. for understanding

  991. our passage.

  992. Why is there no reward

  993. for loving those

  994. who love us?

  995. because when you

  996. love people

  997. who love you back,

  998. you already

  999. get your reward.

  1000. You pat your back

1001. and they pat your back.

1002. You give them a massage,

1003. they give you a massage.

  1004. You greet them

  1005. and they greet you.

  1006. You give them,

  1007. oh, you're so great,

  1008. you're amazing.

  1009. Oh, they tell you

  1010. you're so great,

  1011. you're amazing.

1012. You got all your rewards.

  1013. Luke makes this explicit

  1014. in a parallel passage,

  1015. chapter 6,

  1016. verse 32 to 36.

  1017. If you love those

  1018. who love you,

1019. what benefit is that to you?

  1020. For even sinners

1021. love those who love them

1022. and if you lend to those,

  1023. skim forward,

1024. if you lend to those

  1025. from whom you expect

  1026. to receive,

1027. what credit is that to you?

  1028. Even sinners lend

  1029. to sinners

1030. to get back the same.

  1031. But love your enemies

  1032. and do good

  1033. and lend expecting

  1034. nothing in return

  1035. and your reward

  1036. will be great.

  1037. The reason why

  1038. love for enemies

  1039. is rewarded

1040. by our father in heaven

  1041. is because there's

  1042. no reward

  1043. for loving our enemies

  1044. here on earth.

  1045. You get nothing

  1046. back in return.

  1047. If we are looking

  1048. for rewards

  1049. here and now,

  1050. we will never

  1051. love our enemies.

  1052. I mean,

  1053. think about it

  1054. for a moment.

  1055. Is there,

  1056. can you think of

  1057. anything more

  1058. unrewarding

  1059. than loving your enemies?

  1060. you don't get

  1061. the satisfaction

  1062. of vengeance.

  1063. You don't get

  1064. the satisfaction

  1065. of justice.

  1066. You just

  1067. swallow your pride

  1068. and say,

  1069. oh, hey.

  1070. Hey there, enemy.

  1071. And then they just

  1072. glare at you

  1073. and give you

  1074. the cold shoulder

  1075. and walk away.

  1076. Okay.

  1077. you help them.

  1078. Oh,

  1079. fine,

  1080. I hope you help

  1081. them out

  1082. and then

  1083. you get nothing

  1084. back

  1085. and you're in need

  1086. and then they

  1087. don't do anything

  1088. for you.

  1089. Who wants

  1090. to keep doing

  1091. that?

  1092. Christians do

  1093. because

  1094. we are not

  1095. looking for

  1096. an earthly

  1097. reward

  1098. but a heavenly

  1099. one.

  1100. Our heavenly

  1101. father never

  1102. reneeds

  1103. on his

  1104. promises.

  1105. If he promises

  1106. a reward,

  1107. he will surely

  1108. give it.

  1109. And he promises

  1110. us,

  1111. Jesus says

  1112. in Matthew 10

  1113. 42,

  1114. that not even

  1115. a cup of

  1116. cold water

  1117. that we give

  1118. to one of his

  1119. followers

  1120. will go

  1121. unrewarded.

  1122. If that's

  1123. how a cup

  1124. of cold water

  1125. to one of the

  1126. disciples of Jesus

  1127. gets rewarded,

  1128. then how about

  1129. a cup of

  1130. cold water

  1131. for an

  1132. enemy?

  1133. Hebrews 6

  1134. 10 says,

  1135. for God

  1136. is not

  1137. unjust

  1138. so as to

  1139. overlook

  1140. your work

  1141. and the

  1142. love that

  1143. you have

  1144. shown.

  1145. God will

  1146. not

  1147. overlook

  1148. the love

  1149. that you

  1150. show to

  1151. your enemies

  1152. because God

  1153. sees and

  1154. he's not

  1155. unjust.

  1156. He will

  1157. reward you.

  1158. Sometimes

  1159. I think as

  1160. Christians we

  1161. can be a

  1162. little bit

  1163. sheepish about

  1164. seeking heavenly

  1165. reward.

  1166. we ask,

  1167. isn't it

  1168. sinful and

  1169. selfish of

  1170. us to

  1171. pursue heavenly

  1172. reward for

  1173. ourselves?

  1174. Shouldn't we

  1175. be more

  1176. altruistic?

  1177. Shouldn't we

  1178. do good deeds

  1179. not for some

  1180. reward but

  1181. out of our

  1182. gratitude and

  1183. obedience toward

  1184. God?

  1185. God?

  1186. Well, of

  1187. course, if

  1188. there were

  1189. such a thing

  1190. as a

  1191. Christian who

  1192. has no

  1193. love for

  1194. God

  1195. whatsoever

  1196. but he

  1197. just obeys

  1198. these commands

  1199. just thinking

  1200. about that

  1201. heavenly reward

  1202. like, oh, I

  1203. don't want

  1204. anything to do

  1205. with God but

  1206. oh man, I

  1207. want that.

  1208. Well, yeah, that

  1209. would obviously

  1210. be wrong.

  1211. But here's

  1212. the key.

  1213. Such a

  1214. Christian does

  1215. not exist

  1216. because only

  1217. those who

  1218. love God

  1219. truly obey

  1220. him from

  1221. the heart.

  1222. Love for

  1223. God and

  1224. obedience to

  1225. God cannot

  1226. be severed

  1227. from each

  1228. other and

  1229. many passages

  1230. of scripture

  1231. teach this.

  1232. Jesus says in

  1233. John 14, 15,

  1234. if you love

  1235. me, you

  1236. will keep

  1237. my commandments.

  1238. And why do

  1239. we love

  1240. God?

  1241. We love, it

  1242. says in 1 John

  1243. 4, 19, because

  1244. he first loved

  1245. us.

  1246. It always

  1247. starts with

  1248. God, doesn't

  1249. it?

  1250. Philippians 2, 13

  1251. says it is

  1252. God who

  1253. works in you

  1254. both to

  1255. will and to

  1256. work for his

  1257. good pleasure.

  1258. Without God

  1259. himself empowering

  1260. us by his

  1261. spirit, we

  1262. cannot ever

  1263. hope to love

  1264. our enemies.

  1265. We cannot

  1266. obey that

  1267. command and

  1268. do his

  1269. works.

  1270. Paul says

  1271. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:10

  1272. 15, verse

  1273. 10, I

  1274. worked harder

  1275. than any

  1276. of them,

  1277. though it

  1278. was not

  1279. I, but

  1280. the grace

  1281. of God

  1282. that is

  1283. with me.

  1284. All that

  1285. to say,

  1286. only a

  1287. Christian who

  1288. sincerely loves

  1289. God and

  1290. desires to

  1291. please him

  1292. will forego

  1293. earthly rewards

  1294. in pursuit of

  1295. heavenly rewards.

  1296. So don't be

  1297. bashful about

  1298. driving hard

  1299. for those

  1300. heavenly rewards.

  1301. That is

  1302. how God

  1303. wants us

  1304. to think,

  1305. to keep

  1306. a heavenly

  1307. perspective.

  1308. God offers

  1309. us these

  1310. heavenly rewards

  1311. to encourage

  1312. us, and

  1313. there's no

  1314. selfishness to

  1315. be motivated

  1316. by them.

  1317. Let me ask

  1318. you a

  1319. question.

  1320. I think,

  1321. are we hosting

  1322. the Olympics

  1323. next?

  1324. Yeah, so

  1325. if you ever

  1326. watch the

  1327. Olympics,

  1328. I love

  1329. watching the

  1330. track and

  1331. field events,

  1332. the sprints

  1333. especially,

  1334. or the,

  1335. you know,

  1336. not the

  1337. marathon,

  1338. it's just

  1339. too long,

  1340. you can't

  1341. watch it

  1342. for that

  1343. long.

  1344. But when

  1345. you watch

  1346. the Olympics

  1347. and you

  1348. see a

  1349. runner

  1350. cross the

  1351. finish line

  1352. first,

  1353. and then

  1354. you see the

  1355. runner just

  1356. collapse on

  1357. the floor

  1358. with just

  1359. overwhelmed

  1360. with emotion,

  1361. their chest

  1362. heaving,

  1363. and they're

  1364. just kicking

  1365. their hands

  1366. and their

  1367. faces,

  1368. and they're

  1369. crying,

  1370. and why are

  1371. they so

  1372. overcome with

  1373. emotion?

  1374. Because they

  1375. lived for

  1376. how many

  1377. years of

  1378. their life

  1379. with nothing

  1380. but that

  1381. moment as

  1382. their goal?

  1383. That's what

  1384. they lived

  1385. for.

  1386. That's what

  1387. they sacrificed

  1388. for.

  1389. That's what

  1390. they gave up

  1391. their life

  1392. for.

  1393. That's what

  1394. they had in

  1395. mind when

  1396. they gave

  1397. up all

  1398. the good

  1399. delicious

  1400. things that

  1401. other people

  1402. eat that

  1403. they cannot

  1404. eat.

  1405. That's what

  1406. they were

  1407. thinking about

  1408. when they

  1409. went through

  1410. all those

  1411. grueling

  1412. exercises with

  1413. blood,

  1414. sweat,

  1415. and tears.

  1416. That's what

  1417. they were

  1418. driving for.

  1419. And how

  1420. many of us

  1421. look at

  1422. that and

  1423. then think

  1424. to ourselves,

  1425. oh,

  1426. how selfish.

  1427. I can't

  1428. believe he

  1429. just won a

  1430. gold medal

  1431. just so he

  1432. could be a

  1433. gold medalist.

  1434. That's so

  1435. selfish.

  1436. Who thinks

  1437. that way?

  1438. None of us

  1439. think that

  1440. way.

  1441. Because there's

  1442. something good

  1443. about

  1444. persevering

  1445. and running

  1446. toward a

  1447. gold like

  1448. that.

  1449. Is there

  1450. idolatry

  1451. there?

  1452. Yeah,

  1453. probably,

  1454. but I'm

  1455. just,

  1456. don't worry

  1457. about it.

  1458. Yeah,

  1459. just stick

  1460. with the

  1461. point that

  1462. I'm trying

  1463. to make.

  1464. Yeah.

  1465. And

  1466. ultimately,

  1467. the gold

  1468. medal for

  1469. that man

  1470. redounds the

  1471. glory of his

  1472. country too,

  1473. doesn't it?

  1474. do you

  1475. know that,

  1476. do you not

  1477. know that in

  1478. a race all

  1479. the runners

  1480. run but only

  1481. one receives

  1482. the prize?

  1483. So run that

  1484. you may obtain

  1485. it.

  1486. 1 Corinthians

  1487. 9,

  1488. 24 to 25.

  1489. Every athlete

  1490. exercises self-control

  1491. in all things.

  1492. They do it to

  1493. receive a

  1494. perishable

  1495. wreath,

  1496. but we

  1497. an

  1498. imperishable

  1499. wreath.

  1500. God will

  1501. not overlook

  1502. your love

  1503. for your

  1504. enemies.

  1505. You will

  1506. be rewarded

  1507. for it.

  1508. And that

  1509. reward will

  1510. ultimately

  1511. redound to

  1512. the glory

  1513. of God

  1514. the Father.

  1515. It will

  1516. be no

  1517. selfish

  1518. thing.

  1519. That's the

  1520. first motivation,

  1521. heavenly rewards.

  1522. And here's the

  1523. second motivation,

  1524. resemblance to

  1525. our heavenly

  1526. Father.

  1527. It says in

  1528. verse 45,

  1529. love your

  1530. enemies and

  1531. pray for those

  1532. who persecute

  1533. you so that

  1534. you may be

  1535. sons of your

  1536. Father who

  1537. is in

  1538. heaven.

  1539. For he

  1540. makes his

  1541. sun rise

  1542. on the

  1543. evil and

  1544. on the

  1545. good and

  1546. sends rain

  1547. on the

  1548. just and

  1549. on the

  1550. unjust.

  1551. This does

  1552. not mean

  1553. that the

  1554. condition of

  1555. our sonship

  1556. is our

  1557. good works,

  1558. our love

  1559. for our

  1560. enemies.

  1561. It doesn't

  1562. say that we

  1563. become children

  1564. of God by

  1565. loving our

  1566. enemies.

  1567. Galatians 3,

  1568. 26 is

  1569. clear.

  1570. It says,

  1571. for in

  1572. Christ Jesus,

  1573. you are all

  1574. sons of

  1575. God through

  1576. faith.

  1577. We are

  1578. saved by

  1579. grace through

  1580. faith alone.

  1581. Christians are

  1582. saved and

  1583. adopted as

  1584. sons by

  1585. grace and

  1586. through faith

  1587. alone, not

  1588. by our

  1589. good works,

  1590. not by

  1591. loving our

  1592. enemies.

  1593. What does

  1594. it mean

  1595. then that we

  1596. should love

  1597. our enemies

  1598. so that we

  1599. may be sons

  1600. of our

  1601. Father who

  1602. is in

  1603. heaven?

  1604. The

  1605. expression

  1606. son of

  1607. something is

  1608. a Hebrew

  1609. idiom that

  1610. doesn't always

  1611. refer to

  1612. literal paternity.

  1613. For example,

  1614. when Psalm

    Psalms 89:22

  1615. 89 verse 22

  1616. refers to

  1617. the wicked,

  1618. it calls

  1619. the wicked

  1620. a son of

  1621. wickedness.

  1622. Wickedness

  1623. doesn't have

  1624. children.

  1625. This is a

  1626. metaphor.

  1627. Proverbs 31

    Proverbs 31:5

  1628. verse 5

  1629. describes those

  1630. who are

  1631. afflicted

  1632. literally as

  1633. sons of

  1634. affliction.

  1635. Deuteronomy

  1636. 3.18

  1637. describes

  1638. courageous men

  1639. as sons

  1640. of valor.

  1641. So when

  1642. Jesus says,

  1643. so that you

  1644. may be sons

  1645. of your

  1646. Father who

  1647. is in

  1648. heaven,

  1649. he's not

  1650. talking about

  1651. your status,

  1652. but about

  1653. your resemblance.

  1654. The

  1655. followers of

  1656. Christ are

  1657. already adopted

  1658. children of

  1659. God,

  1660. but when we

  1661. love our

  1662. enemies and

  1663. do good to

  1664. those who

  1665. hate us,

  1666. we act

  1667. like God.

  1668. We behave

  1669. like God.

  1670. For he

  1671. makes his

  1672. sun rise

  1673. on the

  1674. evil and

  1675. on the

  1676. good and

  1677. sends rain

  1678. on the

  1679. just and

  1680. on the

  1681. unjust.

  1682. Verse 48

  1683. clinches this

  1684. interpretation.

  1685. You

  1686. therefore

  1687. must be

  1688. perfect as

  1689. your heavenly

  1690. Father is

  1691. perfect.

  1692. Again,

  1693. it's not

  1694. about status,

  1695. it's about

  1696. your resemblance.

  1697. We ought

  1698. to act

  1699. like God,

  1700. not so that

  1701. we can

  1702. become sons

  1703. of God,

  1704. but because

  1705. we are

  1706. sons of

  1707. God.

  1708. Like

  1709. Father,

  1710. like

  1711. Son.

  1712. We all

  1713. expect children

  1714. to resemble

  1715. their parents,

  1716. don't we?

  1717. I remember

  1718. seeing a

  1719. doctored

  1720. photo on

  1721. the internet

  1722. of a

  1723. family with

  1724. a gorgeous

  1725. couple,

  1726. like they

  1727. looked like

  1728. models,

  1729. the father

  1730. and mom,

  1731. and then

  1732. they had

  1733. like three

  1734. or four

  1735. children,

  1736. and they

  1737. were so

  1738. ugly.

  1739. Yeah.

  1740. It was

  1741. an advertisement

  1742. for plastic

  1743. surgery with

  1744. the tagline

  1745. that read,

  1746. the only

  1747. thing you'll

  1748. ever have to

  1749. worry about

  1750. is having

  1751. to explain

  1752. it to

  1753. the kids.

  1754. We

  1755. expect a

  1756. handsome

  1757. couple to

  1758. have

  1759. handsome

  1760. kids,

  1761. don't we?

  1762. I mean,

  1763. look at my

  1764. kids.

  1765. Just kidding.

  1766. I know

  1767. it's from

  1768. the Hannah

  1769. side,

  1770. everybody

  1771. tells me.

  1772. Yeah.

  1773. We expect

  1774. intelligent

  1775. people,

  1776. an intelligent

  1777. couple to

  1778. have intelligent

  1779. kids,

  1780. don't we?

  1781. likewise,

  1782. as those

  1783. who have

  1784. been united

  1785. with Jesus

  1786. Christ,

  1787. God's only

  1788. son,

  1789. by faith,

  1790. we share

  1791. in his

  1792. sonship.

  1793. That's why

  1794. he calls

  1795. us sons,

  1796. because we're

  1797. in Jesus

  1798. Christ.

  1799. Therefore,

  1800. it is fitting

  1801. that we

  1802. resemble our

  1803. heavenly

  1804. father who

  1805. blesses even

  1806. his enemies

  1807. by making

  1808. his son

  1809. rise on the

  1810. evil and on

  1811. the good and

  1812. sends rain on

  1813. the just and

  1814. the unjust.

  1815. Did you notice

  1816. that possessive

  1817. pronoun,

  1818. his?

  1819. It highlights

  1820. God's benevolence.

  1821. It doesn't say

  1822. God makes the

  1823. son rise.

  1824. It says God

  1825. makes his

  1826. son rise on

  1827. the evil and

  1828. on the good.

  1829. We humans

  1830. live like,

  1831. live as the

  1832. entitled people,

  1833. like we like,

  1834. as if we're

  1835. entitled to this

  1836. rising son,

  1837. oh,

  1838. that's our

  1839. son.

  1840. Every day we

  1841. count on it.

  1842. But God

  1843. says,

  1844. no,

  1845. that is my

  1846. son.

  1847. Every time it

  1848. comes up,

  1849. it's an expression

  1850. of my grace

  1851. toward you.

  1852. My grace,

  1853. mercy,

  1854. and blessing

  1855. to you.

  1856. We take it

  1857. for granted,

  1858. but the son

  1859. that keeps us

  1860. warm and makes

  1861. the crops grow

  1862. and infuses

  1863. our skins

  1864. with vitamin

  1865. D is his

  1866. son.

  1867. And God

  1868. makes it rise

  1869. on the evil

  1870. people and on

  1871. good people.

  1872. He doesn't

  1873. have to do

  1874. that,

  1875. yet he does

  1876. that.

  1877. God

  1878. sovereignly

  1879. and providentially

  1880. makes the

  1881. sun rise

  1882. every single

  1883. morning,

  1884. even on the

  1885. very people

  1886. who rebel

  1887. against him

  1888. and besmirch

  1889. his name.

  1890. In the same

  1891. way,

  1892. he makes the

  1893. rain come

  1894. down,

  1895. makes the

  1896. crops grow

  1897. to cool the

  1898. hot summer

  1899. days,

  1900. fills the

  1901. land with

  1902. water for

  1903. us to drink.

  1904. The rain

  1905. doesn't come

  1906. of its own

  1907. accord.

  1908. Yeah,

  1909. sure,

  1910. evaporation,

  1911. condensation,

  1912. but who

  1913. upholds the

  1914. universe by

  1915. the word of

  1916. his power?

  1917. Who upholds

  1918. and maintains

  1919. the laws of

  1920. nature?

  1921. It's the

  1922. creator,

  1923. the Lord

  1924. God.

  1925. He sends

  1926. rain to

  1927. us.

  1928. It says

  1929. in Acts

  1930. 17,

  1931. 25,

  1932. God himself

  1933. gives us,

  1934. all mankind,

  1935. life and

  1936. breath and

  1937. everything

  1938. else.

  1939. It says

  1940. that in

  1941. him we

  1942. live and

  1943. move and

  1944. have our

  1945. being.

  1946. Every single

  1947. moment that

  1948. we live,

  1949. we are alive

  1950. because God

  1951. sustains us and

  1952. gives us

  1953. breath.

  1954. Every day

  1955. we receive a

  1956. thousand undeserved

  1957. gifts of God's

  1958. grace and yet

  1959. so often

  1960. we fixate

  1961. on the one

  1962. or two things

  1963. that we don't

  1964. have that we

  1965. wish we had.

  1966. And then we

  1967. grumble against

  1968. God.

  1969. We resent

  1970. him.

  1971. Instead,

  1972. if we knew

  1973. the reality,

  1974. if we knew

  1975. the true

  1976. state of

  1977. things,

  1978. every single

  1979. one of us

  1980. would abound

  1981. in thanksgiving

  1982. and worship

  1983. and praise

  1984. every waking

  1985. moment of

  1986. our lives.

  1987. God.

1988. He reminds me of God.

1989. Oh, that group of people at Trinity Cambridge Church,

1990. they must be sons of God, children of God.

1991. God loves those who rebel against him and hate him.

1992. His enemies, that's his common grace

1993. that God extends to all of humanity.

1994. But incredibly, for us, his chosen people,

1995. God extends much more than common grace.

1996. He gives us his special grace,

  1997. saving grace.

1998. He does that by giving his only son, Jesus Christ, to us.

1999. If we are honest with ourselves,

2000. I think we would all admit that this kind of teaching

2001. can be quite discouraging on one level.

2002. I mean, which of us can claim to have obeyed God's commands

2003. and love our enemies perfectly?

2004. I was really encouraged by this excerpt from the Martin Lloyd-Jones sermon.

2005. He's the studies in the Sermon on the Mount.

2006. I know we have a group of people in our church

2007. who are on their own going through this book that I recommend.

2008. Nat, can you raise your hand?

2009. Yeah, if you guys want to participate in the study,

  2010. we'll talk to Nat.

2011. D. Martin Lloyd-Jones is one of my own personal heroes of the faith.

2012. And so, sometimes when I think of guys like him,

2013. I think, oh man, of course,

2014. when I feel really bad about myself sometimes,

2015. that's the accusation that I hear from the enemy.

  2016. He's like, well, yeah, D. Martin Lloyd-Jones

2017. would never do the stuff you do.

  2018. I mean, D. Martin Lloyd-Jones would never struggle

2019. with the stuff you do as a pastor.

2020. That's the kind of stuff that I hear in my own head.

2021. And then I read this, and I was so encouraged,

2022. because he says this is discouraging.

2023. He says, is there anything known to us

2024. that is more discouraging than the Sermon on the Mount?

2025. Take this passage from verse 17

2026. to the end of this fifth chapter.

2027. These detailed illustrations given by our Lord

2028. as to how we are to live.

2029. Is there anything more discouraging?

2030. We feel that the Ten Commandments,

2031. the ordinary moral standards of decency,

  2032. are difficult enough.

2033. But look at these statements

2034. about not even looking with lust,

2035. about going the second mile

2036. and throwing in the cloak together with the coat,

  2037. and so on.

2038. There is nothing more discouraging

2039. than the Sermon on the Mount.

2040. It seems to throw us right out

2041. and to damn our every effort

  2042. before we have started.

  2043. It seems utterly impossible.

2044. But at the same time,

2045. do we know of anything more encouraging

2046. than the Sermon on the Mount?

2047. Do we know of anything

2048. that pays us a greater compliment?

2049. The very fact that we are commanded

  2050. to do these things

2051. carries with it an implicit assertion

  2052. that it is possible.

  2053. In our own strength,

  2054. no, it isn't.

  2055. It's impossible.

  2056. Christ in us,

  2057. it is possible.

2058. And isn't it an amazing compliment

  2059. that God,

2060. the creator of the cosmos,

  2061. calls us His children.

2062. Says, hey, you're my kids.

  2063. So do this.

  2064. Follow my example.

  2065. Be like me.

2066. We read from Romans 5, 8 to 10 earlier

2067. in the assurance of pardon.

2068. God shows His love for us,

  2069. His special people,

2070. His chosen people in this,

2071. that while we were still sinners,

  2072. Christ died for us.

2073. Since therefore we have now been justified

  2074. by His blood,

2075. much more shall we be saved by Him

2076. from the wrath of God.

2077. For if while we were enemies,

2078. we were reconciled to God

2079. by the death of His Son,

2080. much more now that we are reconciled

2081. shall we be saved by His life.

2082. Jesus died on the cross

2083. to pay the penalty for our sins,

2084. not because we were sincerely

  2085. reforming our ways

2086. and starting to put our life together.

2087. Isn't that often our standard?

  2088. For our enemies?

2089. I need to see some real remorse, you know.

2090. I gotta see you start making some changes.

  2091. God didn't do that.

2092. Jesus didn't do that for us.

  2093. We were sinners.

2094. While we were still sinners,

2095. Jesus died to reconcile us to the Father.

2096. He says that He did this,

  2097. while we were enemies,

2098. we were reconciled to God

2099. by the death of His Son.

2100. Jesus didn't die for us

2101. to reconcile us to the Father

2102. while we were raising the white flag

2103. and seeking terms of truth with God.

2104. No, we were pounding against Him,

  2105. marching against Him,

  2106. rebelling against Him,

2107. resisting Him at every turn

  2108. by living for ourselves

  2109. and living for us

2110. to satisfy our own pride.

  2111. That's why it's not wrong,

  2112. as the song,

2113. How Deep the Father's Love,

  2114. says.

2115. It was our mocking voice

2116. that calls out among the scoffers

2117. who are at Jesus' crucifixion.

2118. It's our sin that held Jesus there

  2119. on the cross

  2120. until it was accomplished.

  2121. We did that.

  2122. We were His enemies.

2123. And yet while we were still His enemies,

  2124. Jesus died for us.

2125. I'm so grateful for this truth

  2126. because I know myself,

2127. and if God had not loved me first

2128. when I was still His enemy,

2129. I would never love Him.

2130. It's because Jesus loved me well

2131. while I was still an enemy of God

  2132. that now I am a son.

  2133. Reconciled to the Father.

2134. A participant at the table of the Lord.

2135. A member of the family of God,

  2136. the household of God.

  2137. So do you know,

  2138. let me ask you,

2139. do you know the love

  2140. of the Father

2141. who makes His Son shine

2142. on the good and the evil?

2143. Do you know the love of the Son

2144. who died for the sake of His enemies?

  2145. Then and only then,

2146. we can love our enemies

  2147. like Father,

  2148. like Son.

  2149. Let's pray.

2150. Father, thank You for loving us

2151. while we were still Your enemies.

  2152. Jesus,

2153. thank You for dying for us

2154. while we were still Your enemies.

2155. And oh, we are so grateful

2156. that we are no longer Your enemies,

2157. but that You have adopted us

2158. as Your sons and daughters,

2159. united to Jesus Christ, Your Son.

  2160. Oh God,

  2161. we can never hope

2162. to repay You for that.

2163. And You don't expect us to.

2164. We simply love You in return.

  2165. We worship You.

  2166. We submit to You.

  2167. Help us

2168. with the love You have given us

  2169. to love the enemies

  2170. in our own lives.

2171. In Jesus' name we pray.

  2172. Amen.
