  1. Good morning, guys. Thank you to Todd and David for such a fun edition of our Sunday announcements today.

  2. ! We're going to continue on in the Sermon on the Mount this morning as we read and open up with chapter 6.

  3. Our text is Matthew 6, 1-6.

  4. And then we're skipping the Lord's Prayer altogether because that most certainly deserves its own sermon.

  5. And then we'll read verses 16-18.

  6. I think you'll see soon why we grouped this text like this.

  7. I was discussing the sermon with our very own Steve Miller,

  8. who mentioned that this is the perfect text for me to preach on as I start full-time ministry.

  9. And I couldn't agree more.

  10. This text has been a mirror to me, revealing my pride, my self-righteousness,

  11. but also the kindness of my Heavenly Father.

  12. So let's pray now that the Spirit of God will show us both of those things this morning.

  13. Heavenly Father,

  14. Father, you are in heaven, high and holy,

  15. but you're also our Father.

  16. And you meet us where we are,

  17. meek and lowly.

  18. We are in awe of you.

  19. That when we fall short of your standards,

  20. of your teachings,

  21. that your heart towards us isn't to reject us,

  22. isn't to fold your arms,

  23. to say,

  24. try again next time.

  25. But you love us.

  26. You welcome us in as

  27. a good, good Father does.

  28. And we need to be reminded of that fatherly love this morning.

  29. Our hearts are sick,

  30. craving for affirmation and approval,

  31. and we look for it in so many of the wrong places.

  32. But I pray, Lord,

  33. won't you open our eyes to see that your heart,

  34. your disposition towards us,

  35. is one of love and compassion and kindness,

  36. so that we would be able to

  37. not fear man,

  38. and not seek the approval of man,

  39. but to seek your approval and your reward.

  40. Help us, Father, to that end.

  41. We need your spirit to convict us

  42. and to help us.

  43. In Jesus' name we pray.

  44. Amen.

  45. Please stand, if you are able,

  46. for the reading of God's word.

  47. We're in Matthew 6,

  48. starting in verse 1.

  49. Beware of practicing your righteousness

  50. before other people

  51. in order to be seen by them,

  52. for then you will have no reward

  53. from your Father who is in heaven.

  54. Thus, when you give to the needy,

  55. sound no trumpet before you,

  56. as the hypocrites do

  57. in the synagogues and in the streets,

  58. that they may be praised by others.

  59. Truly, I say to you,

  60. they have received their reward.

  61. But when you give to the needy,

  62. do not let your left hand know

  63. what your right hand is doing,

  64. so that your giving may be in secret.

  65. And your Father who sees in secret

  66. will reward you.

  67. And when you pray,

  68. you must not be like the hypocrites,

  69. for they love to stand

  70. and pray in the synagogues

  71. and at the street corners,

  72. that they may be seen by others.

  73. Truly, I say to you,

  74. they have received their reward.

  75. But when you pray,

  76. go into your room

  77. and shut the door

  78. and pray to your Father

  79. who is in secret.

  80. And your Father who sees in secret

  81. will reward you.

  82. And when you fast,

  83. do not look gloomy

  84. like the hypocrites,

  85. for they disfigure their faces,

  86. that their fasting

  87. may be seen by others.

  88. Truly, I say to you,

  89. they have received their reward.

  90. But when you fast,

  91. anoint your head

  92. and wash your face,

  93. that your fasting

  94. may not be seen by others,

  95. but by your heavenly Father,

  96. but by your Father

  97. who is in secret.

  98. And your Father

  99. who sees in secret

  100. will reward you.

  101. This is God's holy

  102. and authoritative word.

  103. You may be seated.

  104. Back in the early 2000s,

  105. there was this era

  106. of youth-oriented,

  107. high-production,

  108. culturally relevant

  109. megachurches like Hillsong.

  110. And there was an up-and-coming church

  111. that challenged Hillsong

  112. with over 21,000 members,

  113. multi-campus,

  114. taking over Australia,

  115. and it was called

  116. Planet Shakers Church.

  117. It gained massive

  118. international attention,

  119. and at its helm

  120. was this young,

  121. charismatic,

  122. energetic speaker

  123. named Michael Guglielmucci,

  124. who filled stadiums

  125. and he wrote

  126. chart-topping music.

  127. People loved Mike

  128. for his authenticity,

  129. his approachableness,

  130. his passion for the Lord.

  131. All was going great

  132. for Planet Shakers

  133. and for Mike

  134. until he dropped

  135. this bomb on them.

  136. He had cancer.

  137. Not just any kind of cancer,

  138. but a rare form

  139. of blood cancer

  140. that left him

  141. with years,

  142. maybe even months,

  143. to live.

  144. But amazingly,

  145. he didn't let that

  146. stop him.

  147. He continued

  148. to go around churches,

  149. preaching like a dying man,

  150. exhorting the younger generation

  151. to never stop trusting

  152. in the Lord.

  153. even when he needed

  154. a cane to walk,

  155. even when all his hair

  156. fell out

  157. because of the chemo,

  158. and when he needed

  159. to be hooked up

  160. even to oxygen

  161. on the stage.

  162. He never stopped preaching.

  163. He led worship

  164. and he performed

  165. his hit song,

  166. Healer,

  167. which lyrics go,

  168. you hold my every moment,

  169. you calm my raging seas,

  170. you walk with me

  171. through fire

  172. and heal all my disease.

  173. I trust in you.

  174. In every way,

  175. Mike was a model example

  176. of someone

  177. who holds on to faith

  178. in such a hard situation.

  179. Or so it seemed.

  180. It turned out

  181. that Mike was lying

  182. the entire time

  183. about his cancer diagnosis.

  184. Not just to the public,

  185. not just to his church,

  186. but to his own family,

  187. his own wife.

  188. He would have them

  189. drop him off

  190. at the hospital,

  191. but never let them

  192. come in with him.

  193. And it turns out

  194. that he shaved

  195. his own head,

  196. he faked his oxygen tube

  197. on stage,

  198. and he acted a limp

  199. into his walk.

  200. to make matters worse.

  201. He confessed

  202. that he was using

  203. this cancer diagnosis

  204. to hide a secret sin,

  205. a decades-long addiction

  206. to adult videos.

  207. Michael Guglielmucci

  208. was a hypocrite,

  209. a double life fraud.

  210. In our passage this morning,

  211. Jesus warns us

  212. of this hypocrisy.

  213. Verse 1 says,

  214. Beware of practicing

  215. your righteousness

  216. before other people

  217. in order to be seen by them,

  218. for then you will have

  219. no reward from your Father

  220. who is in heaven.

  221. This is a sobering verse

  222. this morning

  223. that acts like

  224. the thesis statement

  225. for the rest of our passage.

  226. Jesus is saying

  227. that the motive

  228. by which you practice

  229. your righteousness

  230. before others

  231. is not a light matter.

  232. There sadly have been

  233. way too many men,

  234. like the scribes

  235. and the Pharisees

  236. that we're going to read about,

  237. that have acted

  238. like all they want

  239. is to please the Lord,

  240. but in reality,

  241. they don't have an ounce

  242. of genuine desire.

  243. Their only motivation

  244. is self-glory.

  245. Jesus warns

  246. that those who have won

  247. the praise

  248. of the entire world

  249. by their hypocrisy,

  250. like Mike Guglielmucci,

  251. will not receive

  252. an ounce of reward

  253. from their heavenly father.

  254. unless they repent.

  255. So instead,

  256. in our passage,

  257. Jesus teaches us

  258. a better way.

  259. Other than in verse 1,

  260. our passage is split

  261. into three congruent passages,

  262. and it doesn't take long

  263. to see a pattern

  264. between all three sections.

  265. First,

  266. Jesus rebukes

  267. the hypocrites

  268. for practicing

  269. acts of righteousness

  270. to be seen by men.

  271. And in all three sections,

  272. he has the same judgment.

  273. Truly,

  274. I say to you,

  275. they have received

  276. their reward.

  277. And then comes

  278. the contrast.

  279. But you,

  280. you should do

  281. all that the hypocrite

  282. is doing,

  283. but in secret.

  284. And then,

  285. this is the identical line again.

  286. He says,

  287. your father,

  288. who sees in secret,

  289. will reward you.

  290. The main idea

  291. of this passage

  292. isn't hard to identify.

  293. Jesus makes it clear

  294. that we should practice

  295. our righteousness

  296. in secret

  297. to be seen

  298. and rewarded

  299. by God,

  300. not man.

  301. And in turn,

  302. we're going to look

  303. at how Jesus speaks

  304. about how we are

  305. to give,

  306. not grandstand.

  307. We're to pray,

  308. not play act.

  309. We're to fast,

  310. and not feign.

  311. Let's jump into

  312. the first of his examples

  313. now,

  314. which is all about

  315. giving to the poor.

  316. Back then,

  317. giving to the poor

  318. was an essential part

  319. of society

  320. because unlike us today,

  321. the poor didn't have

  322. government welfare systems

  323. to rely on.

  324. Instead,

  325. they had to depend

  326. entirely on the donations

  327. of the public

  328. run through a system

  329. by the Jewish synagogues.

  330. And in that system,

  331. significant donations,

  332. big donations,

  333. were likely broadcasted,

  334. publicized

  335. to the entire society.

  336. So you can just imagine

  337. how ripe

  338. the circumstances were

  339. for these hypocrites,

  340. these scribes

  341. and Pharisees

  342. that Jesus most likely

  343. is referring to here,

  344. to practice

  345. their righteousness

  346. to win

  347. the praise of man.

  348. The word hypocrite

  349. originally referred

  350. to a theatrical actor,

  351. which I think

  352. is such a fitting description.

  353. of what these men

  354. are doing.

  355. It really seems like

  356. they know and love God

  357. by their acts

  358. of righteousness,

  359. but in actuality,

  360. they're only convincing

  361. method actors.

  362. They toot their trumpets

  363. in a musical performance.

  364. They perform

  365. their long prayer monologues.

  366. They even costume up.

  367. They wear makeup,

  368. as we'll see later.

  369. Here Jesus exposes

  370. their hypocrisy

  371. as they give to the poor

  372. only to hear

  373. that trumpet played

  374. and only to hear

  375. the people ooh and ah

  376. at their generosity

  377. and their holiness.

  378. Mind you,

  379. this man is not

  380. pretending to give.

  381. He's not lying about it.

  382. He's actually giving.

  383. So he's doing

  384. an act of kindness.

  385. Anyone with two eyes

  386. can see that.

  387. But yet,

  388. Jesus isn't impressed.

  389. For Jesus,

  390. it's not enough

  391. for us to just

  392. throw money

  393. at the poor

  394. and expect that

  395. to please him.

  396. If that were the case,

  397. mega YouTube

  398. star,

  399. Mr. Beast,

  400. if you guys know him,

  401. Jimmy Donaldson,

  402. he would be the most

  403. righteous of us

  404. with his long list

  405. of philanthropic

  406. achievements.

  407. And these YouTube videos

  408. that you guys

  409. likely have seen,

  410. they're insane.

  411. He donates

  412. a year's salary

  413. to every family

  414. in a village

  415. in Uganda

  416. or he pays

  417. for a thousand

  418. deaf people

  419. and their surgeries

  420. so that they can hear

  421. for the first time.

  422. On first glance,

  423. it seems that Jesus

  424. would be impressed

  425. by such acts

  426. of generosity

  427. and kindness.

  428. But here,

  429. out of Donaldson's

  430. own mouth,

  431. the rationale,

  432. the motive

  433. by which he gives.

  434. Near the beginning

  435. of Donaldson's success,

  436. he posted this video

  437. in which he gives

  438. to his mom

  439. $100,000

  440. in cold,

  441. hard cash.

  442. Can you imagine?

  443. And at first,

  444. she refuses,

  445. but he insists,

  446. says,

  447. if I don't give this

  448. to you,

  449. I don't have

  450. a viral video.

  451. You're using me

  452. for views,

  453. she asks.

  454. And he's honest.

  455. He says,

  456. yes,

  457. but you get money too.

  458. So we're both happy.

  459. This philanthropic content

  460. has been a key part

  461. to Donaldson's

  462. explosive growth

  463. to fame.

  464. These videos rack up

  465. hundreds of millions

  466. of views.

  467. Even I want to watch

  468. a thousand deaf people

  469. to regain their hearing again.

  470. But this is nothing new.

  471. The scribes

  472. and the Pharisees

  473. were long onto

  474. this strategy

  475. long before Mr. Beast.

  476. In fact,

  477. they were the original

  478. Mr. Beast

  479. who flaunted

  480. their generous giving.

  481. It's not actually giving

  482. because in actuality,

  483. they're buying.

  484. They're just using

  485. their money

  486. to buy the respect

  487. and clout

  488. of society.

  489. And Jesus himself

  490. knows that this

  491. strategy works.

  492. He acknowledges

  493. that there is a reward

  494. to this kind of behavior

  495. when he says

  496. three times in our passage,

  497. truly I say to you,

  498. they have received

  499. their reward.

  500. But what's the problem

  501. with this kind of reward?

  502. A lot of things,

  503. but let me just highlight

  504. two aspects.

  505. Number one,

  506. this praise,

  507. this clout,

  508. it's

  509. caffeine.

  510. caffeine.

  511. It's

  512. high fructose

  513. corn syrup.

  514. It's an addictive

  515. stimulant.

  516. It's ephemeral,

  517. temporary,

  518. burns hot for a second

  519. and leaves you

  520. crashing the next.

  521. Like the high of a drug,

  522. it never satisfies,

  523. but it hooks you.

  524. It addicts you

  525. to the next hit,

  526. to the next achievement,

  527. to the next affirming

  528. person,

  529. the next compliment.

  530. Then you're only as good

  531. as your next achievement.

  532. But more importantly,

  533. the reward of man,

  534. it forfeits

  535. the true reward

  536. of God

  537. because we cannot

  538. serve both God

  539. and man.

  540. It's binary.

  541. It's one or the other.

  542. So Jesus seriously

  543. warns us

  544. to be careful

  545. because if this is all

  546. that you're working towards,

  547. if this is all

  548. that you're striving for,

  549. then you might just get it.

  550. But that's all

  551. you're going to get.

  552. So friends,

  553. we should not expect

  554. to please Jesus

  555. if we're not even

  556. aiming to do so.

  557. So instead of this hypocrisy,

  558. what should we do?

  559. We should give in total secret.

  560. That's what Jesus says.

  561. Here,

  562. Jesus isn't directly

  563. commanding us

  564. to give to the needy,

  565. but he's assuming

  566. that we're doing so.

  567. We can't give in secret

  568. unless we're not giving at all.

  569. So this is a time

  570. to just quickly evaluate.

  571. Am I matching?

  572. Is the way that I use my money

  573. match Jesus' assumption

  574. about me?

  575. My budget,

  576. my spending habits?

  577. But this passage

  578. isn't about

  579. the amount of money

  580. that we give,

  581. but it's more about

  582. the motivation

  583. with which we give.

  584. for Jesus commands us

  585. while the right hands

  586. of the hypocrites

  587. are tooting their horns

  588. and they're blasting

  589. their socials

  590. to tell the entire world

  591. of how good of a person

  592. they are

  593. and all that they're doing,

  594. your right hand

  595. shouldn't even tell the left

  596. what it's doing.

  597. That's how secretive

  598. you are to be.

  599. Why?

  600. Because when you give

  601. in secret,

  602. your father

  603. who sees in secret

  604. will reward you.

  605. This is a fascinating comment

  606. from Jesus.

  607. Do you notice

  608. that he doesn't say

  609. you should give in secret

  610. because this is

  611. the right thing to do?

  612. You know,

  613. sometimes we think

  614. that the true Christian thing

  615. is to completely

  616. divorce ourselves

  617. from any

  618. self-interested desire.

  619. We think we should

  620. only be outward focused

  621. and do the right thing only

  622. because it's the right thing.

  623. Because we love others

  624. and we love God

  625. so we shouldn't be

  626. in it for ourselves.

  627. And there is a way

  628. that this certainly

  629. does become selfish

  630. but amazingly,

  631. Jesus doesn't think

  632. that it is

  633. automatically,

  634. inherently selfish

  635. for us to be motivated

  636. by future reward.

  637. instead he's intentionally

  638. holding out to us

  639. a greater,

  640. a better reward.

  641. And so what he's

  642. ultimately rebuking

  643. the scribes

  644. and the Pharisees for

  645. is not that they are

  646. self-interested

  647. but it's that they're not

  648. self-interested

  649. in the right way.

  650. Like a little boy

  651. who stuffs himself

  652. with candy

  653. before dinner,

  654. these scribes

  655. and their Pharisees,

  656. these Pharisees,

  657. they're too easily

  658. stuffing themselves

  659. with the praise of man,

  660. the lesser things

  661. which then disqualifies

  662. them from a better,

  663. heartier meal,

  664. a future reward

  665. that's going to be

  666. far better

  667. than anything man

  668. can give.

  669. In other words,

  670. they're too nearsighted

  671. to be able to see

  672. far ahead

  673. and long for

  674. something better.

  675. I don't know

  676. if you guys

  677. know this about me,

  678. some of you guys do,

  679. but I'm terribly

  680. nearsighted.

  681. My eyes are really,

  682. really bad, right?

  683. Like I can basically

  684. only see clearly

  685. three to four inches

  686. in front of me.

  687. My wife has joked

  688. that probably

  689. it's not a joke,

  690. but that I would

  691. be utterly useless

  692. when I have to

  693. defend her in a fight

  694. because all you have

  695. to do is just

  696. knock the glasses off

  697. and just going to

  698. be throwing

  699. punches blindly.

  700. But just like

  701. the best solution

  702. for nearsightedness

  703. is not to put

  704. out our eyes

  705. and go blind,

  706. thank God,

  707. but it's to

  708. correct our vision

  709. with glasses,

  710. with contacts.

  711. We shouldn't

  712. blind ourselves

  713. from reward,

  714. but instead

  715. correct our vision,

  716. have a better

  717. long-term view

  718. of heavenly rewards.

  719. seeking God's reward

  720. as Jesus encourages,

  721. it's not mercenary,

  722. it's not impure,

  723. but it honors God

  724. because it's our

  725. acknowledgement

  726. that only he has

  727. what can truly

  728. satisfy.

  729. He brings us

  730. the greatest joy

  731. and deepest happiness.

  732. That's what I want.

  733. That's what you say.

  734. Do we immediately

  735. consider a man

  736. selfish

  737. when he marries

  738. a woman

  739. because he anticipates

  740. a lifetime of happiness

  741. with her?

  742. It's not immediately

  743. selfish,

  744. but it's honoring

  745. to her.

  746. In the same way,

  747. if we

  748. resolve to not

  749. please man,

  750. but to please God

  751. for this future reward

  752. for millions

  753. of lifetimes

  754. of happiness

  755. with him,

  756. that's not selfish,

  757. but that's honoring

  758. to him.

  759. God is glorified

  760. in us

  761. when we live

  762. with the conviction,

  763. with the desire

  764. that our greatest

  765. satisfaction

  766. and our reward

  767. is found in him

  768. and him alone.

  769. We have to hit pause

  770. and just say

  771. the fact alone

  772. though

  773. that God would

  774. reward me,

  775. me,

  776. is utterly astounding.

  777. For who am I

  778. but only an unworthy

  779. servant

  780. that should just do

  781. whatever he tells me

  782. to do whenever

  783. he tells me

  784. to do it?

  785. Should the master

  786. thank his servant

  787. if he just does

  788. what he's commanded

  789. of?

  790. And while that is

  791. true,

  792. that our relationships

  793. with God is like that,

  794. of master and servant,

  795. Jesus doesn't frame

  796. our relationship

  797. with him

  798. like this

  799. in our passage today.

  800. I don't know

  801. if you've noticed

  802. but the word

  803. that is most

  804. frequently repeated

  805. in our passage

  806. is not

  807. righteousness,

  808. it's not

  809. hypocrite,

  810. but it's the word

  811. father.

  812. In fact,

  813. Matthew 6

  814. has the word

  815. father

  816. the most amount

  817. of times

  818. in this one chapter

  819. compared to all

  820. the rest of the book

  821. of Matthew.

  822. And by this

  823. super concentration

  824. of this title,

  825. Jesus is highlighting

  826. the intimate

  827. relationship

  828. that we now have

  829. as God being

  830. our heavenly father

  831. and we his children.

  832. That he is not

  833. a stingy,

  834. hard to please

  835. master.

  836. He's not a stern,

  837. aloof judge.

  838. but that he is

  839. a good,

  840. good father

  841. that loves us

  842. and is desiring

  843. to give us

  844. good gifts.

  845. This is,

  846. this is a massive

  847. idea

  848. that we need

  849. to internalize

  850. more and more

  851. because without

  852. believing this,

  853. we will never

  854. be able to give

  855. in secret.

  856. We'll never be able

  857. to practice

  858. our righteousness

  859. in secret

  860. because if we

  861. don't truly believe

  862. that God sees us

  863. and delights

  864. to reward us,

  865. then we're going

  866. to seek

  867. the affirmation

  868. that we so crave

  869. in other places.

  870. But if he's a father

  871. that jumps

  872. at the chance

  873. of blessing you,

  874. of rewarding you,

  875. you can now

  876. give in secret

  877. knowing that there

  878. is going to be

  879. a great heavenly

  880. reward for you.

  881. So give,

  882. give in secret.

  883. Even when

  884. the world

  885. is scheming

  886. their way

  887. to popularity

  888. and to the top,

  889. when everyone

  890. is praising

  891. that guy

  892. who seems

  893. to be getting

  894. so much attention

  895. for his acts

  896. of righteousness,

  897. we can be last,

  898. be overlooked,

  899. be invisible

  900. because knowing,

  901. we know that

  902. our future,

  903. our heavenly reward

  904. will be so satisfying.

  905. And in that

  906. pursuit of rewards,

  907. we not just

  908. give in secret,

  909. but we pray

  910. in secret,

  911. which brings me

  912. to my second point.

  913. In verses 5-6,

  914. Jesus rebukes

  915. the hypocrisy

  916. of the scribes

  917. and Pharisees

  918. for the way

  919. that they pray.

  920. And just like

  921. they gave

  922. to the needy,

  923. these actors

  924. are merely

  925. continuing

  926. to play the part

  927. as they lift up

  928. these long,

  929. lofty prayer monologues

  930. in the synagogues

  931. and the street corners.

  932. And because they

  933. love the stage

  934. and they love

  935. the limelight,

  936. you can just

  937. imagine them

  938. scheming,

  939. today,

  940. where should I pray?

  941. Should I

  942. pray in that corner

  943. next to the synagogue

  944. by the market?

  945. Gets a lot of

  946. foot traffic.

  947. But

  948. it's kind of loud,

  949. market's kind of loud,

  950. I don't know if people

  951. are going to be able

  952. to hear me

  953. when I hit my climax,

  954. so let me pray

  955. on the other corner.

  956. You see,

  957. there's a marked

  958. difference

  959. between someone

  960. who egregiously

  961. abuses religion

  962. for his own gain

  963. and operates like

  964. there is no God

  965. versus someone

  966. like you and me

  967. who struggles

  968. honestly with

  969. fear of man.

  970. But while we

  971. might not scheme

  972. as intensely,

  973. we can relate

  974. to this hypocrite,

  975. can't we?

  976. I for sure can.

  977. Why do our

  978. palms get sweaty

  979. and our hearts

  980. beat just a little

  981. bit faster

  982. when it comes

  983. to our turn

  984. to pray

  985. at prayer meetings?

  986. Why do we feel

  987. the need

  988. to throw in

  989. theological jargon

  990. and Christianese

  991. so that we sound

  992. better when we pray?

  993. Is it because we know

  994. who we're praying to?

  995. Do we know

  996. that we're praying

  997. to the Ancient of Days,

  998. to El Elyon,

  999. the God Most High,

  1000. to El Shaddai,

  1001. the God Almighty?

  1002. or is it because

  1003. we know that

  1004. Bobby is sitting

  1005. in the corner

  1006. over there

  1007. and we want

  1008. to impress

  1009. little old Bobby?

  1010. Pastor Derek

  1011. Prime captures

  1012. this phenomenon

  1013. well when he says,

  1014. we find ourselves

  1015. aware of the stars

  1016. only

  1017. when we cannot

  1018. see the sun.

  1019. We are preoccupied

  1020. with men

  1021. only when our minds

  1022. are turned away

  1023. from God.

  1024. God.

  1025. So may we

  1026. never forget

  1027. that the central

  1028. purpose of prayer

  1029. is to actually

  1030. pray to God.

  1031. I know,

  1032. groundbreaking theology,

  1033. but there are times

  1034. that I've done this

  1035. way too many times

  1036. that we pray

  1037. with a motive

  1038. primarily not

  1039. to communicate

  1040. to God,

  1041. but to communicate

  1042. to the people

  1043. around us.

  1044. It could be

  1045. for good reasons.

  1046. We want to

  1047. communicate

  1048. good truths.

  1049. We want to

  1050. remind somebody

  1051. of this thing

  1052. so we pray

  1053. for it

  1054. out loud.

  1055. Or,

  1056. for instance,

1057. in front of our kids

  1058. we try to be

  1059. a healthy example

  1060. for them to emulate

  1061. so we pray.

  1062. Those are all

  1063. great benefits

  1064. of praying

  1065. and I continue

  1066. to pray in public

  1067. and with others,

  1068. but when prayer

  1069. in your heart

  1070. primarily becomes

  1071. about communicating

  1072. to the people

  1073. around you

  1074. horizontally,

  1075. instead of praying

  1076. vertically to God,

  1077. slowly but surely,

  1078. prayer is no longer

  1079. prayer,

  1080. but it's play acting.

  1081. But prayer

  1082. is one of the

  1083. greatest privileges

  1084. that we ought to

  1085. never take for granted

  1086. or abuse.

  1087. To approach

  1088. the throne of glory.

  1089. can you imagine

  1090. communicating to this

  1091. God just like

  1092. the prophet Isaiah

  1093. did in his vision

  1094. of the Lord

  1095. seated on the throne

  1096. high and lifted up

  1097. with the train

  1098. of his robe

  1099. filling the temples

  1100. with the seraphim

  1101. around him

  1102. proclaiming,

  1103. holy,

  1104. holy is the

  1105. Lord of hosts.

  1106. Can you imagine

1107. that we get to pray

  1108. to that God

  1109. and he hears us

  1110. on the regular,

  1111. on the daily,

  1112. not only that,

  1113. but prayer

  1114. is one of the

  1115. most intimate

  1116. things that we

  1117. get to share

  1118. with God.

  1119. I've heard one

  1120. of my seminary

  1121. professors,

  1122. when asked about

  1123. his private

  1124. prayer life,

  1125. commented that

  1126. he doesn't like

  1127. to talk about

  1128. his prayer life

  1129. because for him

  1130. it feels like

  1131. he's talking about

  1132. his private

  1133. love life.

  1134. That's how

  1135. intimate it

  1136. feels to him

  1137. and his relationship

  1138. is with God.

  1139. God.

  1140. So then how

  1141. twisted is it

  1142. then to use

  1143. the privilege

  1144. of prayer,

  1145. the intimacy

  1146. of prayer

  1147. and use it

  1148. for our own

  1149. selfish gain?

  1150. I once heard

  1151. a story of a

  1152. pastor who was

  1153. well known

  1154. for just having

  1155. a remarkable,

  1156. deep,

  1157. fervent love

  1158. for his wife.

  1159. He simply

  1160. absolutely adored

  1161. her,

  1162. the ways that

  1163. his eyes would

  1164. sparkle looking

  1165. at her.

  1166. The way that

  1167. he would speak

  1168. about her,

  1169. the way he

  1170. would wait

  1171. on her hand

  1172. and foot.

  1173. Everyone just

  1174. knew,

  1175. even 40 years

  1176. into his

  1177. marriage,

  1178. that he was

  1179. head over heels

  1180. in love with

  1181. his wife.

  1182. Tragically,

  1183. when he lost

  1184. her,

  1185. he spoke

  1186. at our

  1187. funeral.

  1188. And when he

  1189. did,

  1190. everyone was

  1191. expecting this

  1192. grand display

  1193. of his

  1194. amazing love

  1195. for her.

  1196. And if anyone

  1197. could do it,

  1198. it was him.

  1199. But when he

  1200. got up there,

  1201. it was a

  1202. plain speech.

  1203. Basic facts

  1204. about his

  1205. wife,

  1206. the ministry

  1207. she carried

  1208. out,

  1209. and how she

  1210. was faithful

  1211. to the end.

  1212. He didn't

  1213. speak about

  1214. the thousands

  1215. of times

  1216. that they

  1217. prayed together,

  1218. the daily

  1219. walks that

  1220. they shared,

  1221. the inside

  1222. jokes that

  1223. brought out

  1224. the smile

  1225. that he so

  1226. dearly missed.

  1227. at the end,

  1228. people came

  1229. up to ask

  1230. him,

  1231. we know,

  1232. we know

  1233. that you

  1234. have loved

  1235. your wife.

  1236. Why didn't

  1237. you speak

  1238. more passionately

  1239. about your

  1240. love for her?

  1241. And to

  1242. which he

  1243. replied,

  1244. this funeral

  1245. is to honor

  1246. my wife

  1247. and the life

  1248. that she

  1249. lived.

  1250. It's not an

  1251. opportunity

  1252. for me to

  1253. show off

  1254. my love

  1255. for her.

  1256. This is not

  1257. about me.

  1258. In the same

  1259. way,

  1260. prayer is

  1261. not an

  1262. opportunity

  1263. for us

  1264. to show

  1265. off our

  1266. love for

  1267. God.

  1268. It's not

  1269. about us.

  1270. But how

  1271. many of us

  1272. struggle to

  1273. pray with

  1274. this kind

  1275. of self-forgetful

  1276. humility?

  1277. Whether we

  1278. arrogantly

  1279. think that we

  1280. can impress

  1281. others,

  1282. or we're

  1283. anxious,

  1284. and we worry

  1285. about embarrassing

  1286. ourselves,

  1287. we still make

  1288. prayer about

  1289. us.

  1290. We forget

  1291. who we're

  1292. praying to.

  1293. Not just

  1294. in prayer,

  1295. but we live

  1296. with that

  1297. kind of

  1298. self-attention,

  1299. that self-focus

  1300. often,

  1301. often in a

  1302. lot of what

  1303. we do.

  1304. So we don't

  1305. live in fear

  1306. of God,

  1307. but we live

  1308. in fear

  1309. of man.

  1310. But if we

  1311. were instead

  1312. to walk in

  1313. fear of the

  1314. Lord,

  1315. we'd be able

  1316. to live out

  1317. what Tim

  1318. Keller has

  1319. said.

  1320. True gospel

  1321. humility means

  1322. that I stop

  1323. connecting every

  1324. experience,

  1325. every conversation,

  1326. and I add

  1327. every prayer

  1328. with myself.

  1329. In fact,

  1330. I stop

  1331. thinking about

  1332. myself.

  1333. Oh,

  1334. how amazing

  1335. would that be

  1336. to stop

  1337. thinking about

  1338. yourself?

  1339. How liberating

  1340. would it be

  1341. to forget

  1342. yourself and

  1343. to pray openly

  1344. and honestly

  1345. before others

  1346. and to God?

  1347. How joyful

  1348. would it be

  1349. to stop

  1350. your performing

  1351. and stop

  1352. our play

  1353. acting

  1354. to impress

  1355. people,

  1356. but to be

  1357. who we are

  1358. and to pray

  1359. as we are?

  1360. I'm not

  1361. preaching anything

  1362. new.

  1363. Most of us

  1364. know that

  1365. we shouldn't

  1366. fear man

  1367. and we should

  1368. fear God

  1369. alone.

  1370. But honestly,

  1371. and I feel

  1372. this,

  1373. that feels

  1374. like something

  1375. that's so

  1376. hard to do.

  1377. It feels

  1378. like there's

  1379. such a large

  1380. gap between

  1381. what we know

  1382. in our heads

  1383. and what is

  1384. in our hearts.

  1385. It feels

  1386. like there's

  1387. such a large

  1388. gap between

  1389. what we want

  1390. to live like

  1391. and what we

  1392. are today.

  1393. So how do

  1394. we realistically

  1395. get from here

  1396. to there?

  1397. To that end,

  1398. Jesus recommends

  1399. that we ought

  1400. to pray in secret

  1401. in the privacy

  1402. of our rooms

  1403. because our

  1404. heavenly father

  1405. sees,

  1406. not just sees

  1407. in secret,

  1408. but he is

  1409. in secret.

  1410. If the Lord

  1411. is in secret

  1412. and invisible

  1413. to the human

  1414. eye,

  1415. then one

  1416. of the ways

  1417. we should

  1418. draw near

  1419. to him

  1420. should match

  1421. that,

  1422. to meet

  1423. him invisibly

  1424. from the rest

  1425. of the human

  1426. eyes.

  1427. Of course,

  1428. I don't think

  1429. that Jesus

  1430. is literally

  1431. commanding us

  1432. to never

  1433. pray with

  1434. others.

  1435. Of course,

  1436. that would

  1437. go against

  1438. many other

  1439. examples in

  1440. scripture,

  1441. even Jesus'

  1442. own example

  1443. in the book

  1444. of John.

  1445. In the book

  1446. of Acts,

  1447. there are

  1448. multiple

  1449. examples in

  1450. the church

  1451. gathering together

  1452. to pray

  1453. with great

  1454. power.

  1455. And I've

  1456. just tasted

  1457. and seen

  1458. a part of

  1459. that,

  1460. praying with

  1461. you guys.

  1462. I've been

  1463. built up

  1464. and encouraged

  1465. when I hear

  1466. you guys

  1467. pray.

  1468. But there

  1469. is something

  1470. to this

  1471. practice

  1472. of secret

  1473. prayer,

  1474. of going

  1475. into a

  1476. prayer closet.

  1477. You know,

  1478. practically in

  1479. a TikTok,

  1480. Netflix,

  1481. Twitter-infested

  1482. world,

  1483. it's hard

  1484. enough to

  1485. pray five

  1486. minutes without

  1487. internal

  1488. distraction.

  1489. We don't

  1490. need to

  1491. be bombarded

  1492. with external

  1493. distraction.

  1494. It would

  1495. be wise of

  1496. us to

  1497. find a

  1498. spot in

  1499. our homes,

  1500. in our

  1501. rooms,

  1502. if possible,

  1503. that is

  1504. device-less,

  1505. distraction-less,

  1506. where it could

  1507. just be you

  1508. and God.

  1509. And if you

  1510. don't have

  1511. those spots

  1512. in our

  1513. home,

  1514. we're going

  1515. to have

  1516. a spot

  1517. at the

  1518. church

  1519. office,

  1520. a little

  1521. nook

  1522. that's

  1523. hidden away

  1524. that you

  1525. can come

  1526. and pray

  1527. in secret.

  1528. And plan,

  1529. plan into

  1530. your schedule

  1531. those times

  1532. of prayer

  1533. in those

  1534. closets.

  1535. Of course,

  1536. have spontaneous

  1537. times of

  1538. prayer,

  1539. but don't

  1540. neglect the

  1541. planned times

  1542. either.

  1543. Just as my

  1544. marriage needs

  1545. both the

  1546. planned date

  1547. night and

  1548. the spontaneous

  1549. fun,

  1550. our

  1551. relationships

  1552. with God

  1553. need both

  1554. too.

  1555. But there

  1556. is something

  1557. more to

  1558. this practice

  1559. of praying

  1560. in secret,

  1561. for it is

  1562. in that

  1563. place where

  1564. the Spirit

  1565. of God

  1566. does His

  1567. work.

  1568. He builds

  1569. that bridge

  1570. between

  1571. head and

  1572. heart.

  1573. At first,

  1574. when we

  1575. begin doing

  1576. this,

  1577. our temptation

  1578. will be

  1579. to pray

  1580. like the

  1581. Pharisee

  1582. in Luke

  1583. 18.

  1584. We say,

  1585. Lord,

  1586. thank you

  1587. that I'm

  1588. not like

  1589. the others

  1590. who don't

  1591. pray as

  1592. much as

  1593. me,

  1594. that don't

  1595. have a

  1596. prayer closet

  1597. like I

  1598. do.

  1599. But when

  1600. we are

  1601. still before

  1602. God long

  1603. enough,

  1604. the deep,

  1605. the ugly

  1606. stuff that

  1607. we all

  1608. carry,

  1609. the stuff

  1610. that we're

  1611. often too

  1612. busy to

  1613. identify and

  1614. to recognize

  1615. and acknowledge,

  1616. a desperate

  1617. longing for

  1618. people's

  1619. approval,

  1620. a lingering

  1621. guilt from

  1622. past mistakes,

  1623. unspoken

  1624. fears about

  1625. the future,

  1626. a deep

  1627. insecurity,

  1628. envy over

  1629. a friend's

  1630. success,

  1631. all that

  1632. stuff begins

  1633. to rise to

  1634. the surface.

  1635. And we see

  1636. that the only

  1637. prayer worth

  1638. praying in

  1639. that prayer

  1640. closet is

  1641. that of the

  1642. tax collector.

  1643. Lord,

  1644. have mercy

  1645. on me,

  1646. a sinner,

  1647. as we beat

  1648. our chests.

  1649. And then the

  1650. spirit of God

  1651. begins to

  1652. move.

  1653. begins to

  1654. do a work

  1655. on us

  1656. and gradually

  1657. but surely

  1658. constructs that

  1659. bridge between

  1660. head and

  1661. heart.

  1662. We can now

  1663. internalize the

  1664. truths of the

  1665. gospel.

  1666. He draws us

  1667. close to

  1668. himself and

  1669. reminds us of

  1670. all the lies

  1671. that we're

  1672. believing and

  1673. the truths that

  1674. we're forgetting.

  1675. Reminds us that

  1676. God loves us

  1677. based on what

  1678. Jesus has done

  1679. for us on

  1680. the cross,

  1681. not based on

  1682. our performance,

  1683. not based on

  1684. what man thinks

  1685. of us.

  1686. And he

  1687. empowers us

  1688. in that

  1689. secret place

  1690. to live out

  1691. the gospel,

  1692. to live as if

  1693. we actually

  1694. believe it.

  1695. And there in

  1696. the secret

  1697. place,

  1698. our fear of

  1699. man is

  1700. transformed

  1701. into the

  1702. fear of

  1703. the Lord.

  1704. And we

  1705. learn there

  1706. how to pray

  1707. with a

  1708. self-forgetful

  1709. humility.

  1710. Then when we

  1711. pray self-forgetfully,

  1712. either in

  1713. private or in

  1714. public,

  1715. when we pray

  1716. to get more

  1717. of God and

  1718. not to get

  1719. more of

  1720. man,

  1721. he will

  1722. reward us

  1723. in heaven

  1724. with a

  1725. love that

  1726. our hearts

  1727. are so

  1728. desperately

  1729. yearning for.

  1730. That love

  1731. that we've

  1732. only tasted

  1733. a part here

  1734. but will be

  1735. fuller,

  1736. richer in

  1737. that last

  1738. day.

  1739. So friend,

  1740. recently,

  1741. have you

  1742. known,

  1743. have you

  1744. tasted the

  1745. sweetness of

  1746. the Lord where

  1747. it's just you

  1748. and him?

  1749. have you

  1750. felt the

  1751. good Father

  1752. work on

  1753. your heart

  1754. in your

  1755. prayer closet?

  1756. Have you

  1757. sensed his

  1758. gentle guidance

  1759. speaking directly

  1760. to your soul

  1761. in those

  1762. moments?

  1763. If we

  1764. have,

  1765. then God

  1766. will help

  1767. us to

  1768. practice

  1769. our

  1770. righteousness,

  1771. not to

  1772. seek the

  1773. attention of

  1774. man,

  1775. even as

  1776. we fast,

  1777. which brings

  1778. me to my

  1779. last point.

  1780. In verses

  1781. 16 to 18,

  1782. Jesus again

  1783. contrasts,

  1784. showy hypocrisy

  1785. and secret

  1786. righteousness.

  1787. This time

  1788. with fasting.

  1789. Fasting is

  1790. the prayer of

  1791. voluntarily

  1792. abstaining from

  1793. food for a

  1794. specific amount

  1795. of time so

  1796. that we draw

  1797. close to him

  1798. in prayer.

  1799. It's a way

  1800. to express

  1801. both in

  1802. soul and

  1803. body that

  1804. more than

  1805. food,

  1806. we need

  1807. God more.

  1808. It's a way

  1809. to sharpen

  1810. our hunger

  1811. for God

  1812. alone.

  1813. In a

  1814. quintessential

  1815. John Piper

  1816. way to

  1817. say this,

  1818. he says,

  1819. the greatest

  1820. enemy of

  1821. hunger for

  1822. God is

  1823. not poison,

  1824. but apple

  1825. pie.

  1826. It's not

  1827. the banquet

  1828. of the wicked

  1829. that dulls

  1830. our appetite

  1831. for heaven,

  1832. but endless

  1833. nibbling at

  1834. the table

  1835. of the world.

  1836. Once again,

  1837. Jesus assumes

  1838. that his

  1839. disciples are

  1840. fasting.

  1841. It doesn't

  1842. say if you

  1843. fast,

  1844. but when you

  1845. fast.

  1846. fast,

  1847. especially

  1848. given the

  1849. start of

  1850. prayer and

  1851. fasting week,

  1852. I want to

  1853. challenge you

  1854. and encourage

  1855. you.

  1856. Fasting is

  1857. one of the

  1858. least practiced

  1859. spiritual

  1860. disciplines in

  1861. the American

  1862. church today.

  1863. If you

  1864. haven't ever

  1865. fasted before,

  1866. take some

  1867. time to try

  1868. to fast.

  1869. Start off

  1870. small.

  1871. Fast just

  1872. one meal,

  1873. but use that

  1874. time to

  1875. express your

  1876. desperation for

  1877. the Lord and

  1878. for the Lord

  1879. alone.

  1880. That more

  1881. than food,

  1882. I need God

  1883. and God

  1884. alone.

  1885. And as you

  1886. make this a

  1887. regular habit,

  1888. you're going to

  1889. see that just

  1890. as he said,

  1891. Jesus has

  1892. food to eat

  1893. that the

  1894. world doesn't

  1895. know about.

  1896. But given

  1897. that true

  1898. fasting is the

  1899. expression of

  1900. desperation for

  1901. God,

  1902. what these

  1903. hypocrites are

  1904. doing is not

  1905. fasting, but

  1906. just going

  1907. hungry, going

  1908. on a diet.

  1909. like his

  1910. theatrical

  1911. giving or

  1912. his ornate

  1913. prayers, this

  1914. hypocritical

  1915. actor continued

  1916. the act by

  1917. skipping meals

  1918. and on top

  1919. of that,

  1920. costuming up,

  1921. putting on

  1922. makeup by

  1923. disfiguring his

  1924. face, likely

  1925. putting ashes or

  1926. dirt on his

  1927. head and face

  1928. to make it

  1929. readily apparent

  1930. that he is

  1931. on a fast.

  1932. The word

  1933. disfigure in

  1934. the Greek

  1935. literally means

  1936. to hide,

  1937. and I

  1938. think it

  1939. highlights this

  1940. rich, self

  1941. defeating irony

  1942. that this man

  1943. is hiding his

  1944. face behind a

  1945. mask in order

  1946. to be seen

  1947. by others.

  1948. Once again,

  1949. Jesus, though

  1950. he spoke 2,000

  1951. years ago, speaks

  1952. directly to our

  1953. lives.

  1954. It's relevant

  1955. now.

  1956. Because I

  1957. think at the

  1958. heart of this

  1959. passage, Jesus

  1960. is addressing,

  1961. tapping into

  1962. something innate

  1963. in every single

  1964. one of us

  1965. here in this

  1966. room.

  1967. Every single

  1968. one of us

  1969. craves to

  1970. be adored,

  1971. approved of,

  1972. accepted, and

  1973. loved.

  1974. There's not a

  1975. single person

  1976. on this earth

  1977. that is not

  1978. desperately and

  1979. intensely yearning

  1980. for that kind

  1981. of acceptance.

  1982. So when we

  1983. put on these

  1984. masks of

  1985. religiosity and

  1986. show off our

  1987. works of

  1988. righteousness to

  1989. be able to

  1990. win that kind

  1991. of approval

  1992. that our

  1993. hearts are so

  1994. desperately

  1995. yearning for.

  1996. But when the

  1997. show ends,

  1998. the curtain

  1999. closes and

  2000. the lights

  2001. turn off,

  2002. do you know

  2003. what you have

  2004. to do?

  2005. You have to

  2006. go home.

  2007. You have to

  2008. go home with

  2009. yourself.

  2010. You're not

  2011. fooling anyone

  2012. there.

  2013. Because we know

  2014. deep down that

  2015. any amount of

  2016. acting cannot

  2017. change who we

  2018. really are.

  2019. For the person

  2020. we are in

  2021. secret is a

  2022. person that we

  2023. really are.

  2024. The person that

  2025. you are when no

  2026. one is looking

  2027. is a person that

  2028. you really are.

  2029. Then who are

  2030. the people that

  2031. really know you?

  2032. Really know you?

  2033. Sure, our spouses

  2034. and our best

  2035. friends, they've

  2036. seen a lot of

  2037. your lows.

  2038. But if they

  2039. were to watch a

  2040. videotape of

  2041. your life, if

  2042. they heard or

  2043. saw all of your

  2044. inner thoughts,

  2045. there would be so

  2046. many things that we

  2047. wouldn't want to

  2048. show them.

  2049. They don't know

  2050. who you really

  2051. are.

  2052. And if they did,

  2053. they might not

  2054. even love you.

  2055. Only the

  2056. Lord knows

  2057. the real you.

  2058. We read this

  2059. verse in the

  2060. Assurance of

  2061. Pardon 4.13

  2062. in Hebrews

  2063. says,

  2064. no creature

  2065. is hidden

  2066. from his

  2067. sight, but

  2068. all are

  2069. naked and

  2070. exposed to

  2071. the eyes of

  2072. him.

  2073. To him we

  2074. must give

  2075. account.

  2076. This is a

  2077. terrifying verse,

  2078. is it not?

  2079. For all the

  2080. murderous

  2081. mutterings that

  2082. we've said

  2083. under our

  2084. breath, because

  2085. we thought no

  2086. one would

  2087. hear, God

  2088. has heard.

  2089. For all our

  2090. lustful thoughts

  2091. that we haven't

  2092. told a single

  2093. person about, God

  2094. has seen.

  2095. For all our

  2096. manipulative lies

  2097. that we thought

  2098. we got away

  2099. with, God

  2100. has heard.

  2101. If you're any

  2102. bit self-aware,

  2103. you have to be

  2104. wondering, how

  2105. could I ever be

  2106. loved by this

  2107. God?

  2108. But the

  2109. amazing news

  2110. of the gospel

  2111. is that God

  2112. has loved

  2113. us, that he

  2114. has loved us

  2115. by sending

  2116. his son to

  2117. die for

  2118. sinners like

  2119. you and me.

  2120. That this

  2121. God has not

  2122. only just seen

  2123. all the evil

  2124. that you've

  2125. done in the

  2126. past, but

  2127. all the future

  2128. evil that you

  2129. will do, and

  2130. he still has

  2131. committed himself

  2132. to you, even

  2133. to death.

  2134. Do you

  2135. understand how

  2136. preposterous is

  2137. that idea that

  2138. the creator God,

  2139. perfect and holy,

  2140. would take on

  2141. every single

  2142. one of my

  2143. heinous sins,

  2144. my secret

  2145. sins, and

  2146. that he's

  2147. accepted me

  2148. in Jesus.

  2149. Ever since

  2150. Adam and Eve,

  2151. sin has always

  2152. made us feel

  2153. naked and

  2154. exposed.

  2155. Our sin is

  2156. the ultimate

  2157. reason why we

  2158. feel like we

  2159. need to put on

  2160. these masks and

  2161. parade our

  2162. righteousness,

  2163. because we're

  2164. just trying to

  2165. cover up our

  2166. guilt and cover

  2167. up the shame

  2168. of our sin.

  2169. Isn't this

  2170. exactly what

  2171. Mike

  2172. Guglielmucci

  2173. did?

  2174. Just as God

  2175. graciously covered

  2176. Adam and Eve,

  2177. for those who

  2178. have put their

  2179. faith in Jesus,

  2180. rest assured

  2181. that he has

  2182. now not only

  2183. taken every

  2184. single one of

  2185. our sins, but

  2186. he has covered

  2187. you with his

  2188. perfect righteousness

  2189. so that he is

  2190. getting rid of

  2191. any need for

  2192. a mask, any

  2193. need to pretend

  2194. anymore.

  2195. So only to the

  2196. extent that you

  2197. believe, not

  2198. just with your

  2199. head, but in

  2200. your heart, when

  2201. you internalize

  2202. that truth, can

  2203. we now lower our

  2204. masks, can we

  2205. now anoint our

  2206. heads and wash

  2207. our faces when we

  2208. fast, not to

  2209. seek the approval

  2210. of man, but to

  2211. seek the approval

  2212. of God, the

  2213. reward that only

  2214. he can give.

  2215. And this, this

  2216. can then transform

  2217. this church, Trinity

  2218. Cambridge Church, it's

  2219. this power of the

  2220. gospel that will

2221. enable us to be the

  2222. community that he

  2223. has called us to

  2224. be, not a church

  2225. where we need to

  2226. put on our best

  2227. face and pretend,

  2228. pretend to be people

  2229. that we're not, not

  2230. a church, but a

  2231. church that confesses

  2232. sins, that is

  2233. honest and open with

  2234. where we are and

  2235. who we are and

  2236. humbles ourselves

  2237. before others.

  2238. It's exhausting.

  2239. I've done this.

  2240. It's exhausting to

  2241. continue to pretend.

  2242. It's healing.

  2243. It's healing to be

  2244. honest and open.

2245. And I pray that this

  2246. church be a no

  2247. mask, no

  2248. performing, no

  2249. play acting zone.

  2250. Imagine what our

  2251. church would be.

  2252. Imagine how set

  2253. apart we would be

2254. from the rest of the

  2255. world, from any

  2256. other place that you

  2257. go to.

  2258. Then the world will

  2259. know us by our

  2260. love.

2261. So as we give, we

  2262. pray, we fast, we

  2263. disciple, we

  2264. counsel, we read,

  2265. whatever we do, we

2266. can do it all not to

  2267. seek the recognition

  2268. of man.

  2269. Because of the

  2270. things that happened

  2271. in the past, the

  2272. things that are

  2273. happening present in

  2274. the present, and the

  2275. things that will

  2276. happen in the

  2277. future.

  2278. Because of Jesus'

  2279. past work on the

  2280. cross to cover all

2281. sin, we are secured, we

  2282. are covered in his

  2283. righteousness.

  2284. There's no need for

  2285. masks.

  2286. Because of God's

2287. present work on us, when

2288. we meet with him in

  2289. secret, we not only

  2290. believe the gospel, but

  2291. he helps us to

  2292. internalize it and to

  2293. walk as if we

  2294. believe.

  2295. And because of our

  2296. future heavenly reward,

  2297. we are motivated to

  2298. reject the lesser, the

2299. smaller reward of man to

  2300. wait for something far,

  2301. far better.

2302. And when we tap into

2303. all of those reasons, we

  2304. can practice our

  2305. righteousness in secret,

2306. not to be seen by man

2307. and rewarded by man, but

  2308. God and him alone.

2309. And when we do that, we

2310. will hear that final day,

  2311. well done, well done,

  2312. good and faithful servant,

2313. enter the joy of your

  2314. master.

  2315. That will be the

  2316. greatest thing you will

  2317. ever hear in your

  2318. lives.

  2319. For that alone, I can't

  2320. wait.

  2321. Let's pray.

2322. So, Lord, we pray you

  2323. would help us to

  2324. internalize the gospel,

2325. that this church would be

  2326. marked by a gospel

  2327. culture where we don't

  2328. need to pretend anymore,

2329. but we are honest because

2330. we are secure in the

  2331. love of Christ.

2332. Empower us today to do

  2333. that.

2334. Help us to have a bigger

2335. view of you, God, and a

  2336. smaller view of self.

2337. And then in all things,

2338. we would know that it's

2339. not us, but it is Christ

2340. in us that we can now

  2341. live in this obedience.

  2342. Help us.

  2343. In Jesus' name, amen.
