  1. Please turn to Matthew chapter 6, verse 7 to 15.

    Matthew 6:7–15

  2. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  3. !

  4. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they

  5. will be heard for their many words.

  6. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

  7. Pray then like this.

  8. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

  9. Your kingdom come.

  10. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  11. Give us this day our daily bread.

  12. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

  13. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  14. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

  15. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

  16. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  17. Please be seated.

  18. Please be seated.

  19. In Acts chapter 6, the 12 apostles identify two main things that are absolutely necessary, integral for the advance of the gospel, for the upbuilding of the church,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  20. the progress of the kingdom of God.

  21. And those two things are ministry of the word and prayer.

  22. Ministering God's word and praying.

  23. But of those two all-important activities, we find specific instructions from Jesus about only one of those two activities.

  24. Nowhere in the gospels do we find Jesus' disciples asking him, please teach us how to pray or how to preach, rather.

  25. We want to learn to preach like you, Jesus.

  26. We don't find that anywhere in scripture.

  27. Nowhere in the New Testament do we find specific instructions for what an outline for a sermon should look like.

  28. This is how you should preach.

  29. This is what you should include.

  30. We find many examples of it.

  31. But we don't find specific instructions for it.

  32. Apparently, the basic contours of proclaiming the gospel is simple enough.

  33. Can we receive training to do it better?

  34. Of course.

  35. That's what you have trained pastors for.

  36. But if you are a Christian, then you know the gospel.

  37. Because if you don't know the gospel, then you cannot be a Christian.

  38. The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ, which is the power of God for salvation for those who believe.

  39. That means if you are here and confess Jesus as your Lord, you know the gospel and you know how to proclaim it.

  40. But in Luke 11, we do find Jesus' disciples asking him,

  41. Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples.

  42. Jesus' intimate and trusting relationship with his heavenly Father demonstrated in prayer

  43. was clearly a source of his power in ministry and his disciples knew it.

  44. So Jesus taught his disciples to pray.

  45. We have specific instructions for how to pray in the Bible from the mouth of Jesus himself.

  46. In fact, the way Matthew has structured his sermon on the Mount,

  47. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount here in the gospel,

  48. it centers around the Lord's Prayer.

  49. This is one of, this is Jesus' most famous sermon.

  50. It's one of five major discourses of Jesus in Matthew,

  51. and it's structured chiastically.

  52. It has a mirroring structure where the two ends match each other,

  53. and then the next elements match each other until it comes to the very center of the entire sermon,

  54. which here, in this case, is the Lord's Prayer.

  55. In Matthew 5.1, Jesus, seeing the crowds, went up on the mountain.

  56. In Matthew 8.1, Jesus, it says, came down from the mountain,

  57. and great crowds followed him.

  58. In chapter 5.2, Jesus begins his sayings and teachings to his disciples.

  59. In chapter 7.20, it says that he finished his teachings and sayings to his disciples.

  60. Verse 5.3-16 describes the blessed ones who have and possess the kingdom of heaven.

  61. Chapter 7.13-27 describes those who will enter the kingdom of heaven.

  62. So you see these mirroring elements.

  63. Chapter 5.17-20 speak of how Jesus fulfills the law and the prophets.

  64. In chapter 7.12, we have Jesus' summary of the law and the prophets.

  65. In 5.21-6.4, Jesus talks about how to love our earthly neighbors.

  66. In 6.19-7.11, Jesus talks about how to love our heavenly father.

  67. So again, that's summing up that the greatest command to love God and to love your neighbor as yourself.

  68. And then, as Ed preached last week, in chapter 6.5-6,

  69. we are told not to pray like the hypocrites to be seen by others.

  70. And then, skipping over the Lord's Prayer to verse 16 and 18,

  71. it warns us not to fast like hypocrites to be seen by others.

  72. Every aspect of Sermon on the Mount has these matching elements, except for one.

  73. It's the Lord's Prayer.

  74. Because it's the very center of Jesus' most famous sermon.

  75. That's how important this passage is, and that's how important prayer is.

  76. I think prayer is given such a prominence in Jesus' teaching

  77. and central place in Scripture for a number of reasons.

  78. I think in many ways, and I say this as a preacher,

  79. who is the last person to discount the importance of preaching.

  80. Because praying is harder than preaching.

  81. I know many pastors who struggle with praying.

  82. I don't know that many pastors who pray well but struggle with preaching.

  83. When we're preaching and serving and otherwise busily occupied,

  84. it feels very productive and that feels good.

  85. When we're praying, it feels like we're not accomplishing anything.

  86. Because we're not.

  87. We are not accomplishing anything.

  88. We're asking God to accomplish something.

  89. In prayer, we become helpless, needy, and dependent people,

  90. and this is a very hard thing for a prideful and self-sufficient

  91. and self-important people to do.

  92. That's why I think prayer is harder than preaching.

  93. That's a long introduction to highlight just how critical prayer is,

  94. and the main point, I think, of this passage is that we should pray as children

  95. to our Heavenly Father.

  96. First, he tells us how not to pray.

  97. Don't pray like this, in verse 7 and 8.

  98. And then he tells us how to pray.

  99. Do pray like this in verses 9 to 15.

  100. Let's first talk about how not to pray in verses 7 to 8.

  101. It says,

  102. Jesus is using the term Gentiles here not as an ethnic term primarily,

  103. to mean non-Jews, but to refer to unbelievers,

  104. all those who are outside of his community of disciples.

  105. It was used in the same way in chapter 5, verse 47.

  106. Those who do not believe in the true God heap up empty phrases.

  107. Their prayer is characterized by two things.

  108. One, empty phrases.

  109. Two, many words.

  110. And Jesus teaches us not to pray in these manners.

  111. First, we should not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do.

  112. The Greek word behind heap up empty phrases is literally a word that means babble,

  113. to prattle.

  114. It refers to idle talk.

  115. Imagine someone who prattles on and on about foolish and inconsequential things.

  116. They don't have any real reason for communicating these things to you,

  117. but they're just prattling on.

  118. These are empty phrases that have little meaning.

  119. In the first century Greco-Roman world, Gentiles used these foreign, unintelligible words and sounds

  120. that they called barbarous names, which they believed to possess magical powers.

  121. And you find these barbarous names, these magical incantations in the Greek magical papyri that have

  122. been discovered.

  123. And that's the kind of thing that Jesus is condemning here.

  124. Prayer is not about heaping up empty phrases as if the words and phrases that mean nothing to us

  125. will mean something to God.

  126. That ancient practice is really not all that different from the mantras that Hindus and Buddhists

  127. all over the world use today.

  128. The utter phrases and words and sounds called mantras, which they believe carry sacred vibrations

  129. or divine energy.

  130. But Jesus teaches us here that such babbling, heaping up empty phrases, have zero efficacy.

  131. With God.

  132. Secondly, we should not pray many words as if God will hear us just because our words are many.

  133. Pagan prayer often has little substance and meaning, but there's much vain repetition.

  134. The Greeks were known for repeating the names of their deities over and over again because

  135. they believe that maybe with one time saying the name, their gods might miss it.

  136. If they get their attention, you say their names over and over again.

  137. It's not all that different from how Muslims today used prayer beads called the tasbih, 99

  138. beads for the 99 names of Allah.

  139. They repeat them over and over and over again.

  140. Many Buddhists likewise use prayer wheels that they spin repeatedly while uttering their mantras,

  141. thinking that each turn of the wheel releases a prayer and more prayer the better,

  142. so they just keep spinning these wheels.

  143. Even the Catholic use of the rosary, I believe, sometimes runs afoul of Jesus' command.

  144. The Catholic rosary contains 59 beads with five introductory beads, one Our Father, the Lord's Prayer,

  145. three Hail Marys, and one Glory bead, five sets of ten Hail Marys, each one beginning with Our Father,

  146. which then it closes with the Hail Queen, which is a prayer to Mary.

  147. The Catholic rosary is problematic in a number of important ways.

  148. It includes prayers to Mary, but as we see in this passage, Jesus teaches us that we should pray to God,

  149. not to other believers, not even to believers who are dead and in heaven already.

  150. Sure, we should pray for one another.

  151. The Bible does teach us to pray for one another as saints,

  152. but that's very different from praying to one another.

  153. The rosary often leads to vain repetitions where people thoughtlessly recite prayers in rote and mechanical way

  154. as if the sheer number of repetitions is going to make God hear us and answer us.

  155. God cannot be controlled in such a way.

  156. God is not hard of hearing.

  157. God is not susceptible to flattery.

  158. God is not able to pray for one another.

  159. God is not able to pray for one another.

  160. In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus gives us a model and a pattern according to which we should pray.

  161. I don't think this means that Jesus intends for us to say precisely these 52 words

  162. in the English Standard Version of the Bible in verses 9 to 13.

  163. How do I know that?

  164. Well, because we have two versions of the Lord's Prayer in the Scriptures,

  165. one here in Matthew 6 and another one in Luke 11.

  166. And though those two versions are very similar in their themes,

  167. they're not identical in their wording,

  168. which I think shows us that it's not the exact wording that matters,

  169. but rather the substance of what we're praying to God.

  170. With that said, let me add a couple qualifications.

  171. I'm not saying that we should not have prolonged prayers or persistent prayer.

  172. Maybe you'll think, well, if we shouldn't pray many words,

  173. then all my prayer time should be really short.

  174. Sure, that makes things easier for me, right?

  175. I'm not saying that because if you look at Luke 6, 12,

  176. we're told that Jesus went out on the mountainside to pray,

  177. and it says that he prayed there all night.

  178. Jesus prayed for long periods of time.

  179. Every time I pick up a biography of a Christian saint,

  180. a godly man or woman that I admire, respect,

  181. and read about their life,

  182. they inevitably, invariably have a robust prayer life.

  183. They not only pray frequently,

  184. but they pray for extended periods of time.

  185. There are Christians who say,

  186. you know, who pray only very short and limited prayer times,

  187. and then they say, you know,

  188. you know, it's quality, not quantity.

  189. That counts.

  190. That's true to a point,

  191. sure, one hour of quality prayer time

  192. is perhaps better than two hours of scattered and distracted prayer time.

  193. But isn't two hours of quality prayer time

  194. surely better than one hour of quality prayer time?

  195. Maybe some of you are married or you have significant others.

  196. If your significant other complains to you,

  197. says, you know, I feel like you've been too busy lately,

  198. and I've not gotten enough time with you,

  199. I feel like you're not really drawing me out,

  200. we're not having good quality conversations,

  201. try telling them,

  202. you know, with me,

  203. it's quality that matters,

  204. not quantity.

  205. It will not go over well.

  206. Because if you are so busy hard that you have a hard,

  207. you are so busy that you have a hard time

  208. even spending one hour with someone that you love,

  209. then you're going to be so busy hearted

  210. when you spend that one hour with them

  211. that that one hour is going to be,

  212. is not going to be a quality time.

  213. You're going to be rushed and hurried.

  214. Paul Miller writes in his book,

  215. A Praying Life,

  216. any relationship,

  217. if it is going to grow,

  218. needs private space,

  219. time together without an agenda,

  220. where you can get to know each other.

  221. This creates an environment

  222. where closeness can happen,

  223. where we can begin to understand each other's hearts.

  224. You don't create intimacy,

  225. you make room for it.

  226. This is true,

  227. whether you are talking about your spouse,

  228. your friend,

  229. or God.

  230. You need space to be together.

  231. Efficiency,

  232. multitasking,

  233. and busyness

  234. all kill intimacy.

  235. In short,

  236. you can't get to know God on the fly.

  237. We don't pray for a long time

  238. because we think that God only listens

  239. if we pray over a certain number of hours.

  240. That's not the point.

  241. But prolonged prayer,

  242. that's an expression of our intimate trust in God,

  243. our Father,

  244. is to be commended.

  245. Secondly,

  246. I'm also not speaking against persistent prayer.

  247. In Matthew 26,

  248. 44,

  249. in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  250. shortly before his betrayal and death,

  251. Jesus,

  252. he says,

  253. prayed for the third time,

  254. saying the same words again.

  255. My Father,

  256. if it be possible,

  257. remove this cup from me,

  258. but not my will,

  259. but yours be done.

  260. He says,

  261. Jesus prayed that prayer three times.

  262. Clearly,

  263. it's not a problem to repeat things.

  264. But that's desperate,

  265. persistent prayer.

  266. Paul had a similar instance

  267. in 2 Corinthians 12.

  268. It says three times he pleaded with the Lord

  269. so that a messenger of Satan

  270. that had been harassing him in his flesh

  271. would leave.

  272. Three times.

  273. Same prayers.

  274. In Luke 18,

  275. Jesus gives us a parable

  276. of the persistent widow

  277. who wore down an unrighteous human judge

  278. by bringing her plea for justice repeatedly

  279. until he granted her request.

  280. So Jesus,

  281. and then Jesus commands us

  282. to pray like her.

  283. He says,

  284. to cry out to God day and night.

  285. So Jesus does not condemn

  286. persistent,

  287. repeated prayers.

  288. The difference is that

  289. these are persistent,

  290. repeated,

  291. heartfelt,

  292. faith-filled prayers,

  293. which is a far cry

  294. from the heaping up of empty phrases

  295. and the vain repetitions

  296. of many words,

  297. thinking that

  298. only prayers

  299. that go above

  300. a certain number of word count

  301. can be heard by God.

  302. Prayer is not a way

  303. to manipulate God.

  304. It's a way to submit to God,

  305. to depend on him.

  306. It's a conversation with God

  307. and an outworking

  308. of our relationship with God.

  309. So Jesus says in verse 8,

  310. do not be like them.

  311. For your father knows

  312. what you need

  313. before you ask him.

  314. That's so wonderful

  315. to think about.

  316. Do you know that

  317. your heavenly father

  318. knows what you need

  319. before you ask him?

  320. Don't think that

  321. that he is aloof

  322. and distant

  323. and unaware

  324. of our needs.

  325. Our earthly fathers

  326. sometimes struggle with that

  327. because they have

  328. limited knowledge

  329. and they've limited attention

  330. and they've limited time

  331. and limited resources

  332. and limited power,

  333. but our heavenly father

  334. has no such limitations.

  335. He's attentive

  336. to his children

  337. and he knows

  338. what we need

  339. before we ask him.

  340. God says concerning

  341. his people in Isaiah

    Isaiah 65:24

  342. 65 verse 24,

  343. before they call,

  344. I will answer.

  345. While they are yet speaking,

  346. I will hear.

  347. He says in Daniel 9,

  348. 20, 21,

  349. while Daniel was still

  350. praying to God

  351. that God already sent

  352. his angel Gabriel

  353. to answer his prayer.

  354. In Genesis 24, 15,

  355. when Abraham's servant

  356. is seeking a godly wife

  357. for his master's son,

  358. Isaac,

  359. he begins to pray

  360. and he says that

  361. before he had finished

  362. praying,

  363. God already answered

  364. his prayer

  365. because the Rebecca

  366. is coming out

  367. even before he's done

  368. praying.

  369. It's almost like,

  370. I hope this is not

  371. irreverent,

  372. but it's almost like

  373. God is a contestant

  374. on Jeopardy

  375. who's just like

  376. waiting with bated breath

  377. to hit the buzzer

  378. to give an answer.

  379. God is not

  380. a reluctant,

  381. aloof person

  382. that you need

  383. to pry his hands open

  384. to get stuff

  385. that you want from him.

  386. He's a loving,

  387. attentive father

  388. and you begin

  389. to pray to him

  390. and he's there.

  391. You begin to say

  392. and you begin to speak

  393. and he's already answering.

  394. That's the posture

  395. of God our father

  396. to us.

  397. Lloyd-Jones

  398. puts it helpfully,

  399. as the father cares

  400. for the child

  401. and looks at the child

  402. and is concerned

  403. about the child

  404. and anticipates

  405. the needs of the child,

  406. so is God

  407. with respect

  408. to all those

  409. who are in Christ Jesus.

  410. He desires

  411. to bless us

  412. very much more

  413. than we desire

  414. to be blessed.

  415. He has a view of us.

  416. He has a plan

  417. and a program for us.

  418. He has an ambition

  419. for us

  420. which transcends

  421. our highest thought

  422. and imagination.

  423. But if our God

  424. so knows

  425. what we need

  426. before we even ask him,

  427. why do we pray at all?

  428. That brings us

  429. to the second point.

  430. Do pray like this.

  431. Jesus says in verse 9,

  432. pray then like this.

  433. Our father in heaven.

  434. Prayer is addressed

  435. to God,

  436. our father in heaven.

  437. And this explains

  438. why we pray

  439. even when God

  440. already knows

  441. what we need.

  442. Prayer is not

  443. transactional

  444. as much as it is

  445. relational.

  446. When my children

  447. ask me

  448. if they can have

  449. certain foods

  450. or if I can buy them

  451. a certain present

  452. or if I can help them

  453. with their homework

  454. or if I can play

  455. a game with them

  456. or watch a movie

  457. with them,

  458. it doesn't merely

  459. give me useful information

  460. so that I can know

  461. what to act on

  462. or what they need.

  463. No,

  464. it brings me joy

  465. when they come to me

  466. to ask me

  467. for these things.

  468. Even when I'm

  469. going to say no.

  470. I still want them

  471. to come to me

  472. because it brings me

  473. delight

  474. that my children

  475. would ask me

  476. because it shows

  477. that they trust me.

  478. It shows that they

  479. depend on me.

  480. It shows that they know

  481. that I love them.

  482. It's the same

  483. with our Heavenly Father.

  484. He's not

  485. a vending machine

  486. that's useful

  487. only for dispensing gifts.

  488. He's our Father

  489. and He wants us

  490. to come

  491. and speak with Him

  492. as His children.

  493. This is why

  494. every prayer

  495. recorded in the Bible

  496. begins with

  497. an invocation

  498. of God.

  499. It's a personal

  500. address to God.

  501. Recognizing the

  502. fatherhood of God

  503. is key to Christian

  504. prayer

  505. and really a key

  506. to the entire

  507. Christian life.

  508. Theologian J.I. Packer

  509. puts it this way

  510. in knowing God.

  511. You sum up

  512. the whole

  513. of New Testament

  514. religion

  515. if you describe it

  516. as the knowledge

  517. of God

  518. as one's Holy Father.

  519. If you want to judge

  520. how well a person

  521. understands Christianity

  522. find out

  523. how much

  524. he makes

  525. of the thought

  526. of being God's child

  527. and having God

  528. as his father.

  529. If this

  530. is not the thought

  531. that prompts

  532. and controls

  533. his worship

  534. and prayers

  535. and his whole

  536. outlook on life

  537. it means

  538. that he does not

  539. understand Christianity

  540. very well at all.

  541. For everything

  542. that Christ taught

  543. is summed up

  544. in the knowledge

  545. of the fatherhood

  546. of God.

  547. Father

  548. is the Christian

  549. name for God.

  550. Our understanding

  551. of Christianity

  552. cannot be better

  553. than our grasp

  554. of adoption.

  555. Since Jesus

  556. spoke Aramaic

  557. during his life

  558. when he taught

  559. his disciples

  560. this prayer

  561. the word for father

  562. that he would have

  563. used would have

  564. been the word

  565. Abba

  566. which means

  567. father in Aramaic.

  568. Almost every language

  569. in the world

  570. has a similar word

  571. for father.

  572. In Korean

  573. it's Abba

  574. in Arabic

  575. it's Ab

  576. in Chinese

  577. and Swahili

  578. it's Baba

  579. in English

  580. and German

  581. Spanish

  582. it's Papa

  583. every language.

  584. as the

  585. Eastern Bible

  586. dictionary

  587. helpfully puts it

  588. it is a term

  589. Abba

  590. it's a term

  591. that expresses

  592. warm affection

  593. and filial

  594. confidence

  595. to capture

  596. that familial

  597. affection

  598. and

  599. and

  600. confidence

  601. filial confidence

  602. the New Testament

  603. scripture writers

  604. sometimes preserve

  605. that word

  606. Abba

  607. even though

  608. they're writing

  609. in Greek

  610. you see that

  611. in multiple

  612. places in scripture

  613. and this is

  614. the sacred

  615. privilege

  616. of all

  617. of God's

  618. people

  619. there is

  620. a limited

  621. sense

  622. in which

  623. all people

  624. including

  625. Christians

  626. and non-Christians

  627. are offspring

  628. of God

  629. because God

  630. is our creator

  631. we see that

  632. in Acts 17

  633. 28 to 29

  634. where Paul says

  635. addressing

  636. non-Christians

  637. we are all

  638. his offspring

  639. but there is

  640. a special

  641. sense

  642. in which

  643. only Christians

  644. who have

  645. confessed

  646. Jesus

  647. as their

  648. Lord

  649. and call

  650. upon God

  651. can call

  652. upon God

  653. as their

  654. father

  655. it says

  656. in John

  657. 1 12

  658. to 13

  659. but to

  660. all who

  661. did

  662. receive

  663. Jesus

  664. Christ

  665. who

  666. believed

  667. in his

  668. name

  669. God

  670. gave

  671. the

  672. right

  673. to

  674. become

  675. the

  676. children

  677. of God

  678. who

  679. were

  680. born

  681. not

  682. of

  683. blood

  684. nor

  685. of

  686. the

  687. will

  688. of

  689. the

  690. flesh

  691. nor

  692. of

  693. the

  694. will

  695. of

  696. man

  697. but

  698. of

  699. God

  700. only

  701. those

  702. who

  703. believe

  704. in

  705. Jesus

  706. Christ

  707. is

  708. given

  709. the

  710. right

  711. to

  712. become

  713. children

  714. of

  715. God

  716. 17

  717. times

  718. on the

  719. Sermon on the

  720. Mount

  721. God

  722. is called

  723. our

  724. father

  725. this

  726. prayer

  727. is

  728. traditionally

  729. called

  730. the

  731. Lord's

  732. prayer

  733. because

  734. it's

  735. the

  736. prayer

  737. that

  738. our

  739. Lord

  740. Jesus

  741. taught

  742. us

  743. but

  744. it's

  745. not

  746. actually

  747. a

  748. prayer

  749. that

  750. Jesus

  751. could

  752. have

  753. fully

  754. prayed

  755. because

  756. it

  757. speaks

  758. of

  759. forgiving

  760. us

  761. forgive

  762. us

  763. our

  764. debts

  765. Jesus

  766. doesn't

  767. have

  768. sin

  769. Hebrews

  770. 4

  771. 15

  772. says

  773. Jesus

  774. was

  775. without

  776. sin

  777. so

  778. he

  779. could

  780. not

  781. pray

  782. forgive

  783. us

  784. our

  785. debts

  786. this

  787. is

  788. instead

  789. a

  790. prayer

  791. for

  792. the

  793. disciples

  794. of

  795. Jesus

  796. it's

  797. the

  798. prayer

  799. of

  800. the

  801. disciples

  802. for

  803. all

  804. those

  805. who

  806. call

  807. upon

  808. God

  809. as

  810. their

  811. father

  812. this

  813. is

  814. why

  815. I

  816. love

  817. how

  818. D.

  819. Martin

  820. Jones

  821. puts

  822. it

  823. in

  824. passing

  825. in his

  826. sermon

  827. one

  828. of

  829. his

  830. sermons

  831. he

  832. calls

  833. this

  834. the

  835. children's

  836. prayer

  837. I

  838. love

  839. that

  840. this

  841. is

  842. the

  843. children's

  844. prayer

  845. those

  846. who

  847. call

  848. upon

  849. God

  850. as

  851. their

  852. father

  853. the

  854. fatherhood

  855. of

  856. God

  857. is

  858. the

  859. premise

  860. the

  861. basis

  862. for

  863. all

  864. of

  865. our

  866. prayers

  867. some

  868. of

  869. us

  870. have

  871. a

  872. hard

  873. time

  874. relating

  875. to

  876. God

  877. as

  878. a

  879. loving

  880. father

  881. they

  882. have

  883. a

  884. hard

  885. time

  886. praying

  887. to

  888. God

  889. as

  890. father

  891. because

  892. of

  893. the

  894. troubled

  895. relationship

  896. that

  897. they

  898. have

  899. with

  900. their

  901. own

  902. earthly

  903. fathers

  904. many

  905. of

  906. you

  907. have

  908. had

  909. wonderful

  910. earthly

  911. fathers

  912. but

  913. a few

  914. of

  915. you

  916. have

  917. had

  918. really

  919. bad

  920. earthly

  921. fathers

  922. fathers

  923. who

  924. physically

  925. abandoned

  926. you

  927. or abused

  928. you

  929. or emotionally

  930. neglected

  931. you

  932. manipulated

  933. you

  934. fathers

  935. who

  936. didn't

  937. provide

  938. for

  939. you

  940. fathers

  941. who

  942. were not

  943. there

  944. for you

  945. when you

  946. needed

  947. him

  948. but

  949. you

  950. must

  951. not

  952. let

  953. that

  954. taint

  955. and color

  956. the way

  957. you look

  958. at our

  959. heavenly

  960. father

  961. he's

  962. not

  963. like

  964. that

  965. when

  966. you

  967. think

  968. of your

  969. relationship

  970. with your

  971. earthly

  972. father

  973. do you

  974. think

  975. of

  976. yourself

  977. primarily

  978. as a

  979. disappointment

  980. and a

  981. failure

  982. don't

  983. project

  984. that

  985. onto

  986. our

  987. heavenly

  988. father

  989. he says

  990. in

  991. psalm

  992. 103

  993. 8

  994. to

  995. 14

  996. that

  997. our

  998. heavenly

  999. father

  1000. is

  1001. merciful

  1002. and

  1003. gracious

  1004. slow

  1005. to

  1006. anger

  1007. and

  1008. abounding

  1009. in

  1010. steadfast

  1011. love

  1012. he says

  1013. that

  1014. he does

  1015. not

  1016. deal

  1017. with us

  1018. according

  1019. to our

  1020. sins

  1021. nor

  1022. repay

  1023. us

  1024. according

  1025. to our

  1026. iniquities

  1027. why

  1028. because

  1029. he

  1030. says

  1031. he

  1032. shows

  1033. compassion

  1034. to

  1035. his

  1036. children

  1037. as a

  1038. father

  1039. for

  1040. he

  1041. knows

  1042. our

  1043. frame

  1044. he

  1045. remembers

  1046. that

  1047. we

  1048. are

  1049. dust

  1050. God

  1051. knows

  1052. that

  1053. we are

  1054. only

  1055. children

  1056. God

  1057. knows

  1058. that

  1059. we

  1060. are

  1061. not

  1062. fully

  1063. grown

  1064. yet

  1065. God

  1066. knows

  1067. that

  1068. we

  1069. are

  1070. weak

  1071. and

  1072. fallible

  1073. creatures

  1074. of

  1075. dust

  1076. so

  1077. as

  1078. our

  1079. heavenly

  1080. father

  1081. he

  1082. says

  1083. that

  1084. he

  1085. has

  1086. compassion

  1087. on us

  1088. when

  1089. the

  1090. bible

  1091. speaks

  1092. of

  1093. god

  1094. the

  1095. father

  1096. the

  1097. primary

  1098. attribute

  1099. and

  1100. action

  1101. that

  1102. is

  1103. most

  1104. frequently

  1105. attributed

  1106. to him

  1107. in the

  1108. bible

  1109. is

  1110. love

  1111. it

  1112. says

  1113. in

  1114. first

  1115. john

  1116. three

  1117. one

  1118. see

  1119. what

  1120. kind

  1121. of

  1122. love

  1123. the

  1124. father

  1125. has

  1126. given

  1127. us

  1128. that

  1129. we

  1130. should

  1131. be

  1132. called

  1133. children

  1134. of

  1135. god

  1136. and

  1137. so

  1138. we

  1139. are

  1140. even

  1141. look at

  1142. the

  1143. benediction

  1144. that we

  1145. use

  1146. every

  1147. sunday

  1148. after

  1149. service

  1150. at

  1151. the

  1152. end

  1153. of

  1154. service

  1155. second

  1156. corinthians

  1157. 13

  1158. 14

  1159. which

  1160. says

  1161. the

  1162. grace

  1163. of

  1164. the

  1165. lord

  1166. jesus

  1167. christ

  1168. grace

  1169. associated

  1170. with

  1171. jesus

  1172. and

  1173. the

  1174. love

  1175. of

  1176. god

  1177. love

  1178. is

  1179. associated

  1180. with

  1181. god

  1182. the

  1183. father

  1184. and

  1185. fellowship

  1186. of

  1187. the

  1188. holy

  1189. spirit

  1190. be

  1191. with

  1192. you

  1193. all

  1194. the

  1195. first

  1196. thought

  1197. that

  1198. comes

  1199. to

  1200. our

  1201. minds

  1202. when

  1203. we

  1204. think

  1205. of

  1206. our

  1207. god

  1208. it

  1209. should

  1210. be

  1211. love

  1212. that

  1213. our

  1214. father

  1215. loves

  1216. us

  1217. it

  1218. says

  1219. in

  1220. first

  1221. john

  1222. 4

  1223. 8

  1224. anyone

  1225. who

  1226. does

  1227. not

  1228. love

  1229. does

  1230. not

  1231. know

  1232. god

  1233. because

  1234. god

  1235. is

  1236. love

  1237. it

  1238. says

  1239. in

  1240. romans

  1241. 8

  1242. 15

  1243. that

  1244. we

  1245. did

  1246. not

  1247. receive

  1248. the

  1249. spirit

  1250. of

  1251. slavery

  1252. to

  1253. fall

  1254. back

  1255. into

  1256. fear

  1257. but

  1258. we

  1259. have

  1260. received

  1261. !

  1262. the

  1263. spirit

  1264. of

  1265. adoption

  1266. as

  1267. sons

  1268. by

  1269. whom

  1270. we

  1271. cry

  1272. abba

  1273. father

  1274. slaves

  1275. have

  1276. to

  1277. work

  1278. for

  1279. everything

  1280. they

  1281. have

  1282. to

  1283. earn

  1284. everything

  1285. nothing

  1286. comes

  1287. to

  1288. slaves

  1289. for

  1290. free

  1291. but

  1292. if

  1293. you're

  1294. a

  1295. son

  1296. that's

  1297. a

  1298. different

  1299. story

  1300. you're

  1301. an

  1302. heir

  1303. you

  1304. get

  1305. your

  1306. father's

  1307. inheritance

  1308. by

  1309. right

  1310. how

  1311. did

  1312. Alexander

  1313. the

  1314. great

  1315. come

  1316. to

  1317. lead

  1318. the

  1319. most

  1320. powerful

  1321. army

  1322. in

  1325. the

  1326. kingship

  1327. of

  1328. Macedonia

  1329. at

  1330. the

  1331. young

  1332. age

  1333. of

  1334. 20

  1335. because

  1336. his

  1337. father

  1338. was

  1339. Philip

  1340. II

  1341. of

  1342. Macedon

  1343. how

  1344. did

  1345. Augustus

  1346. become

  1347. Caesar

  1348. of the

  1349. Roman

  1350. Empire

  1351. not

  1352. because

  1353. he

  1354. passed

  2163. than

  2164. the

  2165. earth

  2166. so

  2167. are

  2168. my

  2169. ways

  2170. higher

  2171. than

  2172. your

  2173. ways

  2174. and

  2175. my

  2176. thoughts

  2177. than

  2178. your

  2179. thoughts

  2180. God

  2181. is

  2182. not

  2183. like

  2184. us

  2185. so

  2186. prayer

  2187. is

  2188. not

  2189. about

  2190. making

  2191. much

  2192. of

  2193. ourselves

  2194. prayer

  2195. is

  2196. not

  2197. about

  2198. manipulating

  2199. God

  2200. for our

  2201. purposes

  2202. prayer

  2203. is

  2204. not

  2205. about

  2206. therapeutic

  2207. catharsis

  2208. much

  2209. of

  2210. humanity's

  2211. relationship

  2212. to the

  2213. so-called

  2214. gods

  2215. throughout

  2216. the

  2217. world

  2218. is

  2219. a

  2220. patron

  2221. client

  2222. relationship

  2223. you

  2224. offer

  2225. your

  2226. prayers

  2227. and

  2228. you

  2229. make

  2230. your

  2231. sacrifice

  2232. and

  2233. you

  2234. expect

  2235. God

  2236. to

  2237. pat

  2238. you

  2239. back

  2240. on

  2241. and

  2242. to

  2243. listen

  2244. to

  2245. you

  2246. and

  2247. you

  2248. acquired

  2249. his

  2250. services

  2251. or purchased

  2252. his services

  2253. through

  2254. sacrifices

  2255. and

  2256. prayers

  2257. in that

  2258. view

  2259. God

  2260. exists

  2261. to answer

  2262. us

  2263. to make

  2264. much

  2265. of us

  2266. and we

  2267. are the

  2268. center

  2269. of the

  2270. universe

  2271. but in

  2272. Christian

  2273. prayer

  2274. and in

  2275. Christianity

  2276. God

  2277. is the

  2278. center

  2279. of the

  2280. universe

  2281. the

  2282. ultimate

  2283. goal

  2284. of

  2285. prayer

  2286. is to

  2287. make

  2288. God's

  2289. name

  2290. hallowed

  2291. not

  2292. get

  2293. what

  2294. we

  2295. want

  2296. this point

  2297. is made

  2298. very

  2299. pointedly

  2300. by the

  2301. very form

  2302. and structure

  2303. of the

  2304. Lord's

  2305. prayer

  2306. it begins

  2307. with

  2308. three

  2309. petitions

  2310. that pertain

  2311. to God

  2312. first

  2313. in verses

  2314. 9 to

  2315. 10

  2316. hallowed be

  2317. your

  2318. name

  2319. your

  2320. kingdom

  2321. come

  2322. your

  2323. will

  2324. be

  2325. done

  2326. only

  2327. after

  2328. that

  2329. does

  2330. it

  2331. move

  2332. to

  2333. petitions

  2334. that

  2335. pertain

  2336. to

  2337. us

  2338. in

  2339. verses

  2340. 11

  2341. and

  2342. 13

  2343. give

  2344. us

  2345. this

  2346. day

  2347. our

  2348. daily

  2349. bread

  2350. forgive

  2351. us

  2352. our

  2353. debts

  2354. and

  2355. lead

  2356. us

  2357. not

  2358. into

  2359. temptation

  2360. but

  2361. deliver

  2362. us

  2363. from

  2364. evil

  2365. Christian

  2366. prayer

  2367. is

  2368. first

  2369. and

  2370. foremost

  2371. grounded

  2372. in

  2373. who

  2374. God

  2375. is

  2376. and

  2377. in

  2378. his

  2379. purposes

  2380. and

  2381. priorities

  2382. all

  2383. of our

  2384. petitions

  2385. get

  2386. subsumed

  2387. under

  2388. that

  2389. that's

  2390. the

  2391. thesis

  2392. that's

  2393. the

  2394. purpose

  2395. that's

  2396. the

  2397. hallowed

  2398. be

  2399. your

  2400. name

  2401. your

  2402. kingdom

  2403. come

  2404. your

  2405. will

  2406. be

  2407. done

  2408. also

  2409. notice

  2410. that

  2411. there

  2412. isn't

  2413. a

  2414. single

  2415. eye

  2416. in

  2417. this

  2418. prayer

  2419. this

  2420. doesn't

  2421. mean

  2422. that

  2423. we're

  2424. not

  2425. allowed

  2426. to

  2427. pray

  2428. personally

  2429. for

  2430. ourselves

  2431. as

  2432. individuals

  2433. we

  2434. can

  2435. do

  2436. that

  2437. but

  2438. it

  2439. does

  2440. highlight

  2441. the

  2442. importance

  2443. of

  2444. praying

  2445. to

  2446. God

  2447. as

  2448. a

  2449. community

  2450. which

  2451. is

  2452. what

  2453. we

  2454. do

  2455. together

  2456. as

  2457. a

  2458. church

  2459. even

  2460. when

  2461. we

  2462. pray

  2463. alone

  2464. in

  2465. our

  2466. personal

  2467. prayer

  2468. closets

  2469. we

  2470. speak

  2471. to

  2472. God

  2473. as

  2474. members

  2475. of

  2476. the

  2477. family

  2478. of

  2479. God

  2480. so

  2481. whenever

  2482. we

  2483. address

  2484. God

  2485. as

  2486. father

  2487. remember

  2488. that

  2489. we

  2490. have

  2491. brothers

  2492. and

  2493. sisters

  2494. in

  2495. Christ

  2496. that

  2497. you

  2498. can

  2499. also

  2500. intercede

  2501. for

  2502. the

  2503. second

  2504. and third

  2505. petitions

  2506. are related

  2507. to the

  2508. first

  2509. your

  2510. kingdom

  2511. come

  2512. your

  2513. will

  2514. be

  2515. done

  2516. on

  2517. earth

  2518. as

  2519. it

  2520. is

  2521. in

  2522. heaven

  2523. the

  2524. kingdom

  2525. of

  2526. God

  2527. refers

  2528. to

  2529. God's

  2530. rulership

  2531. his

  2532. reign

  2533. we're

  2534. longing

  2535. for

  2536. his

  2537. reign

  2538. his

  2539. rule

  2540. to be

  2541. manifested

  2542. on

  2543. all

  2544. the

  2545. earth

  2546. of

  2547. course

  2548. God

  2549. is

  2550. already

  2551. king

  2552. in

  2553. one

  2554. sense

  2555. over

  2556. all

  2557. the

  2558. earth

  2559. he

  2560. has

  2561. been

  2562. and

  2563. he

  2564. forever

  2565. will

  2566. be

  2567. however

  2568. this

  2569. rule

  2570. of

  2571. God

  2572. is

  2573. not

  2574. fully

  2575. manifested

  2576. in

  2577. all

  2578. the

  2579. earth

  2580. so

  2581. your

  2582. kingdom

  2583. come

  2584. then

  2585. is

  2586. a

  2587. prayer

  2588. that

  2589. God's

  2590. rule

  2591. right

  2592. his

  2593. rule

  2594. de

  2595. jury

  2596. would

  2597. become

  2598. his

  2599. rule

  2600. de

  2601. facto

  2602. that

  2603. his

  2604. rule

  2605. by

  2606. right

  2607. would

  2608. become

  2609. his

  2610. rule

  2611. in

  2612. reality

  2613. in

  2614. all

  2615. of

  2616. life

  2617. that

  2618. desire

  2619. for

  2620. the

  2621. consummation

  2622. of

  2623. God's

  2624. rule

  2625. is

  2626. expressed

  2627. in

  2628. Zechariah

    Zechariah 14:9

  2629. 14

  2630. verse

  2631. 9

  2632. and

  2633. the

  2634. Lord

  2635. will

  2636. be

  2637. king

  2638. over

  2639. all

  2640. the

  2641. earth

  2642. on

  2643. that

  2644. day

  2645. the

  2646. Lord

  2647. will

  2648. be

  2649. one

  2650. and

  2651. his

  2652. name

  2653. one

  2654. the

  2655. day

  2656. is

  2657. coming

  2658. when

  2659. the

  2660. one

  2661. true

  2662. king

  2663. will be

  2664. worshipped

  2665. in

  2666. all

  2667. the

  2668. earth

  2669. and

  2670. on

  2671. that

  2672. day

  2673. finally

  2674. the

  2675. Lord's

  2676. name

  2677. will

  2678. be

  2679. one

  2680. God

  2681. promised

  2682. us

  2683. in

  2684. Isaiah

  2685. 45

  2686. 23

  2687. to me

  2688. every

  2689. knee

  2690. shall

  2691. bow

  2692. every

  2693. tongue

  2694. shall

  2695. swear

  2696. allegiance

  2697. !

  2698. in

  2699. our

  2700. church

  2701. in

  2702. our

  2703. city

  2704. in

  2705. our

  2706. country

  2707. or

  2708. among

  2709. all

  2710. the

  2711. nations

  2712. in

  2713. the

  2714. world

  2715. we

  2716. can

  2717. pray

  2718. your

  2719. kingdom

  2720. come

  2721. your

  2722. will

  2723. be

  2724. done

  2725. on

  2726. earth

  2727. as

  2728. it

  2729. is

  2730. in

  2731. heaven

  2732. now

  2733. let's

  2734. turn to

  2735. the

  2736. personal

  2737. petitions

  2738. that mention

  2739. us

  2740. in

  2741. verses

  2742. 11

  2743. to

  2744. 13

  2745. the

  2746. first

  2747. of

  2748. those

  2749. is

  2750. for

  2751. provision

  2752. in

  2753. verse

  2754. 11

  2755. give

  2756. us

  2757. this

  2758. day

  2759. our

  2760. daily

  2761. bread

  2762. daily

  2763. bread

  2764. it

  2765. can

  2766. mean

  2767. continual

  2768. bread

  2769. or

  2770. bread

  2771. for

  2772. our

  2773. need

  2774. or

  2775. it

  2776. could

  2777. be

  2778. bread

  2779. for

  2780. tomorrow

  2781. however

  2782. you

  2783. render

  2784. it

  2785. or

  2786. translate

  2787. it

  2788. it

  2789. refers

  2790. to

  2791. our

  2792. present

  2793. need

  2794. and

  2795. not

  2796. for

  2797. a

  2798. need

  2799. in

  2800. some

  2801. distant

  2802. future

  2803. it

  2804. points

  2805. to

  2806. our

  2807. continual

  2808. dependence

  2809. on

  2810. God

  2811. and

  2812. that's

  2813. confirmed

  2814. by

  2815. the

  2816. phrase

  2817. this

  2818. day

  2819. give

  2820. us

  2821. this

  2822. day

  2823. our

  2824. daily

  2825. bread

  2826. most

  2827. laborers

  2828. in

  2829. Jesus'

  2830. time

  2831. were

  2832. paid

  2833. only

  2834. one

  2835. day

  2836. at

  2837. a

  2838. time

  2839. they

  2840. literally

  2841. lived

  2842. hand

  2843. to

  2844. mouth

  2845. day

  2846. to

  2847. day

  2848. and

  2849. so

  2850. for

  2851. them

  2852. this

  2853. would

  2854. have

  2855. been

  2856. a

  2857. very

  2858. real

  2859. prayer

  2860. dependence

  2861. and

  2862. something

  2863. that

  2864. we

  2865. need

  2866. to

  2867. recapture

  2868. in

  2869. our

  2870. dependence

  2871. on

  2872. God

  2873. give

  2874. us

  2875. this

  2876. day

  2877. our

  2878. daily

  2879. bread

  2880. that

  2881. expression

  2882. daily

  2883. bread

  2884. harkens

  2885. us

  2886. back

  2887. to

  2888. Exodus

  2889. 16

  2890. when

  2891. God

  2892. supplied

  2893. bread

  2894. from

  2895. heaven

  2896. manna

  2897. for

  2898. his

  2899. people

  2900. and

  2901. amazingly

  2902. this

  2903. bread

  2904. from

  2905. heaven

  2906. this

  2907. manna

  2908. that

  2909. came

  2910. down

  2911. God

  2912. told

  2913. them

  2914. specifically

  2915. to not

  2916. collect

  2917. more

  2918. than

  2919. what

  2920. they

  2921. need

  2922. for

  2923. that

  2924. day

  2925. and

  2926. if

  2927. everyone

  2928. got

  2929. greedy

  2930. and

  2931. collected

  2932. more

  2933. it

  2934. would

  2935. rot

  2936. and

  2937. stink

  2938. it

  2939. would

  2940. become

  2941. inedible

  2942. the

  2943. next

  2944. day

  2945. and

  2946. whatever

  2947. was

  2948. left

  2949. over

  2950. and

  2951. was

  2952. not

  2953. picked

  2954. up

  2955. on

  2956. the

  2957. field

  2958. would

  2959. dissolve

  2960. under

  2961. the

  2962. heat

  2963. of

  2964. the

  2965. sun

  2966. it's

  2967. amazing

  2968. bread

  2969. engineered

  2970. in

  2971. heaven

  2972. to

  2973. cultivate

  2974. dependence

  2975. so

  2976. you

  2977. can't

  2978. have

  2979. a

  2980. weak

  2981. supply

  2982. of

  2983. bread

  2984. waiting

  2985. for

  2986. you

  2987. you

  2988. have

  2989. to

  2990. force

  2991. to

  2992. daily

  2993. depend

  2994. on

  2995. God

  2996. for

  2997. it

  2998. I've

  2999. shared

  3000. this

  3001. before

  3002. but

  3003. it's

  3004. such

  3005. a

  3006. helpful

  3007. illustration

  3008. for

  3009. me

  3010. in

  3011. his

  3012. book

  3013. Adopted

  3014. for

  3015. life

  3016. which

  3017. is

  3018. a

  3019. book

  3020. about

  3021. adoptions

  3022. author

  3023. Russell

  3024. Moore

  3025. writes

  3026. about

  3027. his

  3028. experience

  3029. with

  3030. adopting

  3031. two

  3032. boys

  3033. from

  3034. Russia

  3035. he

  3036. says

  3037. we

  3038. knew

  3039. the

  3040. boys

  3041. had

  3042. acclimated

  3043. to

  3044. our

  3045. home

  3046. that

  3047. they

  3048. trusted

  3049. us

  3050. when

  3051. they

  3052. stopped

  3053. hiding

  3054. food

  3055. in

  3056. their

  3057. high

  3058. chairs

  3059. they

  3060. knew

  3061. there

  3062. would

  3063. be

  3064. another

  3065. meal

  3066. coming

  3067. and

  3068. they

  3069. wouldn't

  3070. have

  3071. to

  3072. fight

  3073. for

  3074. the

  3075. scraps

  3076. this

  3077. was

  3078. the

  3079. new

  3080. normal

  3081. Moore's

  3082. adopted

  3083. sons

  3084. were

  3085. stashing

  3086. away

  3087. food

  3088. in

  3089. their

  3090. high

  3091. chairs

  3092. because

  3093. they

  3094. didn't

  3095. know

  3096. when

  3097. they

  3098. were

  3099. going

  3100. to

  3101. eat

  3102. next

  3103. they

  3104. I

  3105. have

  3106. to

  3107. save

  3108. this

  3109. but

  3110. when

  3111. they

  3112. finally

  3113. realized

  3114. that

  3115. they're

  3116. no

  3117. longer

  3118. orphans

  3119. but

  3120. they

  3121. have

  3122. parents

  3123. when

  3124. they

  3125. finally

  3126. realized

  3127. that

  3128. they

  3129. are

  3130. sons

  3131. they

  3132. stopped

  3133. hiding

  3134. the

  3135. food

  3136. and

  3137. started

  3138. depending

  3139. on

  3140. their

  3141. father

  3142. to

  3143. provide

  3144. if

  3145. you're

  3146. a

  3147. parent

  3148. like

  3149. me

  3150. you're

  3151. probably

  3152. often

  3153. telling

  3154. your

  3155. kids

  3156. finish

  3157. your

  3158. food

  3159. you know

  3160. but

  3161. if

  3162. you

  3163. think

  3164. about

  3165. it

  3166. this

  3167. way

  3168. it's

  3169. actually

  3170. something

  3171. to be

  3172. really

  3173. grateful

  3174. for

  3175. that

  3176. they

  3177. sometimes

  3178. don't

  3179. finish

  3180. their

  3181. food

  3182. they

  3183. could

  3184. afford

  3185. to

  3186. do

  3187. that

  3188. because

  3189. they

  3190. know

  3191. the

  3192. next

  3193. meal

  3194. is

  3195. coming

  3196. they

  3197. can

  3198. do

  3199. that

  3200. because

  3201. they

  3202. trust

  3203. in

  3204. their

  3205. parents

  3206. to

  3207. provide

  3208. for

  3209. them

  3210. and

  3211. they

  3212. don't

  3213. have

  3214. to

  3215. worry

  3216. about

  3217. their

  3218. food

  3219. that's

  3220. what

  3221. God

  3222. is

  3223. telling

  3224. us

  3225. don't

  3226. save

  3227. manna

  3228. from

  3229. the

  3230. previous

  3231. day

  3232. for

  3233. the

  3234. next

  3235. day

  3236. don't

  3237. depend

  3238. !

  3239. on

  3240. your

  3241. grace

  3242. that

  3243. God

  3244. has

  3245. given

  3246. you

  3247. last

  3248. year

  3249. or

  3250. yesterday

  3251. there's

  3252. fresh

  3253. grace

  3254. for

  3255. you

  3256. this

  3257. morning

  3258. there's

  3259. fresh

  3260. mercy

  3261. for

  3262. you

  3263. new

  3264. mercy

  3265. !

  3266. this

  3267. morning

  3268. God

  3269. wants

  3270. to

  3271. provide

  3272. for

  3273. us

  3274. and

  3275. that

  3276. applies

  3277. I

  3278. think

  3279. both

  3280. physical

  3281. provision

  3282. and

  3283. spiritual

  3284. provision

  3285. since

  3286. Jesus

  3287. says

  3288. in

  3289. John

  3290. 6

  3291. that

  3292. I

  3293. am

  3294. the

  3295. bread

  3296. of

  3297. life

  3298. whoever

  3299. comes

  3300. to me

  3301. shall

  3302. not

  3303. hunger

  3304. and

  3305. whoever

  3306. believes

  3307. in

  3308. me

  3309. shall

  3310. never

  3311. thirst

  3312. do

  3313. you

  3314. cry

  3315. out

  3316. to

  3317. God

  3318. for

  3319. your

  3320. daily

  3321. bread

  3322. or

  3323. have

  3324. you

  3325. been

  3326. going

  3415. dependency

  3417. the

  3418. heartbeat

  3419. of

  3420. prayer

  3421. it's

  3422. not

  3423. ruthless

  3424. self

  3425. discipline

  3426. that

  3427. ultimately

  3428. helps

  3429. us

  3430. to

  3431. pray

  3432. more

  3433. it's

  3434. poverty

  3435. of

  3436. spirit

  3437. it's

  3438. humility

  3439. it's

  3440. neediness

  3441. before

  3442. God

  3443. that

  3444. drives

  3445. us

  3446. to

  3447. prayer

  3448. more

  3449. mature

  3450. Christians

  3451. do

  3452. pray

  3453. more

  3454. that

  3455. is

  3456. true

  3457. but

  3458. it's

  3459. not

  3460. because

  3461. of

  3462. how

  3463. strong

  3464. they

  3465. are

  3466. it's

  3467. because

  3468. of

  3469. how

  3470. keenly

  3471. aware

  3472. they

  3473. are

  3474. of

  3475. their

  3476. weakness

  3477. I think

  3478. I have

  3479. a diagram

  3480. to show

  3481. here

  3482. people

  3483. am I

  3484. is my

  3485. head

  3486. in the

  3487. way

  3488. is

  3489. the

  3490. the

  3491. there's

  3492. this

  3493. diagram

  3494. of when

  3495. you're

  3496. when you're

  3497. a new

  3498. Christian

  3499. a relatively

  3500. new

  3501. Christian

  3502. you

  3503. you see

  3504. only little

  3505. bits

  3506. of your

  3507. sin

  3508. and you

  3509. see

  3510. little

  3511. need

  3512. for

  3513. God

  3514. and so

  3515. the

  3516. cross

  3517. of

  3518. Christ

  3519. only need

  3520. be

  3521. a big

  3522. and

  3523. sufficient

  3524. to bridge

  3525. that gap

  3526. between

  3527. you

  3528. and

  3529. God

  3530. or

  3531. at least

  3532. that's

  3533. how

  3534. you

  3535. perceive

  3536. it

  3537. the

  3538. more

  3539. you

  3540. grow

  3541. in

  3542. maturity

  3543. the

  3544. more

  3545. you

  3546. realize

  3547. that

  3548. your

  3549. distance

  3550. the

  3551. distance

  3552. between

  3553. you

  3554. and

  3555. God

  3556. is

  3557. insurmountable

  3558. it

  3559. is

  3560. unfathomable

  3561. and the

  3562. more

  3563. you get

  3564. to know

  3565. God

  3566. and his

  3567. holiness

  3568. the

  3569. more

  3570. aware

  3571. you

  3572. become

  3573. of

  3574. your

  3575. own

  3576. sins

  3577. so

  3578. the

  3579. need

  3580. for

  3581. God

  3582. does

  3583. not

  3584. diminish

  3585. as

  3586. you

  3587. mature

  3588. it

  3589. grows

  3590. and

  3591. the

  3592. cross

  3593. of

  3594. Christ

  3595. does

  3596. not

  3597. get

  3598. smaller

  3599. and

  3600. smaller

  3601. as

  3602. you

  3603. get

  3604. holy

  3605. and

  3606. holier

  3607. no

  3608. it

  3609. gets

  3610. bigger

  3611. and

  3612. bigger

  3613. and

  3614. bigger

  3615. and

  3616. bigger

  3617. dependency

  3618. is the

  3619. heart

  3620. of

  3621. prayer

  3622. we

  3623. should

  3624. pray

  3625. as

  3626. children

  3627. to

  3628. our

  3629. heavenly

  3630. father

  3631. the

  3632. second

  3633. personal

  3634. petition

  3635. is

  3636. for

  3637. our

  3638. pardon

  3639. oh

  3640. my

  3641. I

  3642. debated

  3643. whether

  3644. to

  3645. break

  3646. this

  3647. up

  3648. it's

  3649. too

  3650. late

  3651. guys

  3652. I

  3653. just

  3654. keep

  3655. going

  3656. forgive

  3657. us

  3658. our

  3659. debts

  3660. as

  3661. we

  3662. also

  3663. have

  3664. forgiven

  3665. our

  3666. debtors

  3667. guys

  3668. trust me

  3669. I

  3670. already

  3671. cut out

  3672. a lot

  3673. of

  3674. stuff

  3675. as

  3676. I

  3677. was

  3678. going

  3679. this

  3680. is

  3681. figurative

  3682. it's

  3683. a metaphor

  3684. for

  3685. spiritual

  3686. debt

  3687. it's

  3688. why

  3689. later

  3690. it

  3691. says

  3692. in

  3693. verse

  3694. 14

  3695. and

  3696. 15

  3697. the

  3698. word

  3699. debt

  3700. is

  3701. replaced

  3702. with

  3703. trespasses

  3704. and

  3705. in

  3706. the

  3707. parallel

  3708. Lord's

  3709. prayer

  3710. in

  3711. Luke

  3712. 11

  3713. it

  3714. says

  3715. forgive

  3716. us

  3717. our

  3718. sins

  3719. it's

  3720. about

  3721. our

  3722. sins

  3723. I

  3724. don't

  3725. know where

  3726. you're

  3727. coming from

  3728. this morning

  3729. maybe you're

  3730. wrestling with

  3731. some shameful

  3732. sin and you feel

  3733. yourself unworthy to

  3734. approach God in

  3735. prayer

  3736. but

  3737. there's

  3738. forgiveness

  3739. for you

  3740. in

  3741. God

  3742. our

  3743. heavenly

  3744. father

  3745. is

  3746. gracious

  3747. to

  3748. forgive

  3749. this

  3750. is

  3751. in

  3752. first

  3753. john

  3754. chapter

  3755. one

  3756. verse

  3757. nine

  3758. if

  3759. we

  3760. confess

  3761. our

  3762. sins

  3763. he

  3764. is

  3765. faithful

  3766. and

  3767. just

  3768. to

  3769. forgive

  3770. us

  3771. our

  3772. sins

  3773. and

  3774. to

  3775. cleanse

  3776. us

  3777. from

  3778. all

  3779. unrighteousness

  3780. when

  3781. you feel

  3782. unworthy

  3783. and when

  3784. you feel

  3785. dirty

  3786. because

  3787. of

  3788. your

  3789. sin

  3790. that

  3791. should

  3792. not

  3793. drive

  3794. you

  3795. away

  3796. from

  3797. God

  3798. it

  3799. should

  3800. drive

  3801. you

  3802. toward

  3803. God

  3804. because

  3805. we

  3806. have

  3807. a

  3808. heavenly

  3809. father

  3810. who

  3811. is

  3812. merciful

  3813. who

  3814. forgives

  3815. us

  3816. of

  3817. all

  3818. our

  3819. sins

  3820. and

  3821. it

  3822. says

  3823. if

  3824. you

  3825. do

  3826. not

  3827. forgive

  3828. others

  3829. their

  3830. trespasses

  3831. neither

  3832. will

  3833. your

  3834. father

  3835. forgive

  3836. your

  3837. trespasses

  3838. this

  3839. is

  3840. consistently

  3841. taught

  3842. everywhere

  3843. in

  3844. scripture

  3845. mark

  3846. 11

  3847. 25

  3848. whenever

  3849. you

  3850. stand

  3851. praying

  3852. forgive

  3853. If you

  3854. have

  3855. anything

  3856. against

  3857. anyone

  3858. so

  3859. that

  3860. your

  3861. father

  3862. also

  3863. who

  3864. is

  3865. in

  3866. heaven

  3867. may

  3868. forgive

  3869. you

  3870. your

  3871. trespasses

  3872. if

  3873. you

  3874. do

  3875. not

  3876. forgive

  3877. others

  3878. their

  3879. trespasses

  3880. your

  3881. heavenly

  3882. father

  3883. will

  3884. not

  3885. forgive

  3886. your

  3887. trespasses

  3888. why

  3889. !

  3890. why

  3891. Jesus

  3892. illustrates

  3893. that

  3894. principle

  3895. in

  3896. the

  3897. parable

  3898. of

  3899. the

  3900. unmerciful

  3901. servant

  3902. in

  3903. Matthew

  3904. 18

  3905. right

  3906. the

  3907. servant

  3908. who

  3909. owes

  3910. the

  3911. king

  3912. the

  3913. modern

  3914. equivalent

  3915. of

  3916. 7.2

  3917. billion

  3918. dollars

  3919. is

  3920. forgiven

  3921. all of

  3922. his

  3923. debt

  3924. by

  3925. the

  3926. gracious

  3927. king

  3928. and

  3929. he

  3930. goes

  3931. to

  3932. a

  3933. fellow

  3934. servant

  3935. who

  3936. owes

  3937. him

  3938. a

  3939. meager

  3940. $12,000

  3941. in

  3942. comparison

  3943. and

  3944. chokes

  3945. him

  3946. and

  3947. says

  3948. you

  3949. must

  3950. repay

  3951. everything

  3952. you

  3953. owe

  3954. me

3955. And then when the king sees that, he says,

  3956. you've been forgiven 7.2 billion.

3957. Clearly, you have not even understood

3958. the magnitude of my forgiveness.

3959. If that's how you will treat your fellow servant,

3960. then you will be expected to repay back everything.

  3961. The principle is this,

3962. the forgiven people forgive others.

3963. Our forgiveness of other people who sin against us

3964. is a true test of whether or not we have really believed

3965. in the forgiveness of God.

3966. Whether we have really grasped

3967. God's radical forgiveness for us.

3968. Our forgiveness of others is the fruit,

3969. the proof, the evidence of the forgiveness

3970. we have received from God.

3971. That's why he says in Ephesians 4.32,

3972. forgive one another as God in Christ forgave you.

3973. And that's why if we don't forgive others

3974. when they sin against us,

3975. it will be evidence against us

3976. that we have never truly grasped

3977. the forgiveness we have received from God.

3978. And the final petition of the children's prayer

  3979. is for protection.

3980. Lead us not into temptation,

3981. but deliver us from evil.

3982. The prayer for pardon for sin

3983. flows naturally to prayer for protection.

3984. They might be kept from further sins.

3985. The word tempt is sometimes translated

3986. elsewhere in scripture as the word test.

3987. It really depends on the context.

  3988. When you tempt someone,

3989. it's the devil who tempts people.

3990. He tempts to make them fail,

  3991. to discredit them.

3992. When God tests his people,

3993. he does it to refine them

  3994. and to accredit them,

  3995. not to discredit them.

3996. James 1.13 tells us that God cannot tempt.

3997. He does not tempt anyone.

3998. But we were told in Matthew 4.1

3999. that God himself led Jesus up

4000. by the spirit into the wilderness

4001. to be tempted by the devil.

  4002. So for Christians,

4003. we seek God's help for such times.

  4004. We don't cultivate this

  4005. warrior bravado that says,

  4006. bring all the temptations.

4007. I will face them all.

4008. If you have fallen upon your face

4009. enough times like I have,

4010. you never pray that kind of prayer.

  4011. You pray desperately,

4012. Father, lead me not into temptation.

4013. And when you are led into temptation

  4014. by the devil,

4015. when you are tested by God,

  4016. then you pray,

4017. Father, deliver me from evil.

  4018. Deliver us from evil.

  4019. Brothers and sisters,

4020. I know many of you sometimes struggle

  4021. with different sins

  4022. and besetting sins

4023. and you wrestle with them.

4024. But have you gone to God

4025. to fetch power for you

  4026. to fight those sins?

4027. There is power for you.

4028. God the Father is waiting.

4029. He's waiting at the ready

  4030. to hit that buzzer,

  4031. to go,

  4032. to answer,

  4033. to help you.

  4034. But of course,

  4035. I've taken for granted

4036. that we are his children.

  4037. How can we,

4038. who have sinned so much,

4039. who have rebelled against God

  4040. so much,

  4041. still have the shamelessness

  4042. to come to God,

4043. approach him as our Father

  4044. and ask him?

  4045. You know,

4046. God has always had a soft side

  4047. for orphans.

4048. That's good news for us.

  4049. He's called the Father

  4050. of the fatherless

  4051. in Psalm 68, verse 5.

    Psalms 68:5

  4052. In you,

  4053. it says in Hosea 14, 3,

  4054. the orphan finds mercy.

4055. We don't have that many orphans

4056. around us here in Cambridge,

  4057. but there are some,

4058. and we partner with the,

  4059. the foster care organization

4060. that we have here in Cambridge

  4061. every Christmas

  4062. to get them gifts.

  4063. But can you imagine

4064. the pain of being an orphan,

  4065. a true orphan?

  4066. Imagine the insecurity,

  4067. the low self-worth,

4068. the fear of being unloved

  4069. and unwanted.

4070. Imagine the kind of identity crisis

  4071. that they go through.

  4072. Who am I?

  4073. Where do I belong?

  4074. Imagine being a child,

  4075. a child,

4076. and having to provide for yourself,

4077. having to fend for yourself

4078. in this world of grown men,

  4079. harsh world of men.

  4080. Is it any surprise

  4081. that traffickers

  4082. often prey on orphans?

  4083. They target children

  4084. living in poverty

  4085. in foster homes

  4086. and groups homes

  4087. or on the streets

4088. because they have no father

  4089. to protect them.

4090. According to the National Council

4091. of Juvenile and Family Court judges,

  4092. an estimated 60%

4093. of all child sex trafficking victims

  4094. have histories

4095. in the child welfare system.

  4096. In a spiritual sense,

4097. we were all one of those

  4098. trafficked children.

  4099. We were all orphans,

  4100. exploited, abused,

  4101. and raped by Satan

  4102. and these evil forces

4103. at work in our sinful world,

  4104. this depraved world.

4105. We were enslaved to sin and death.

  4106. That's what we were,

  4107. all of us.

4108. But it says in Galatians 4,

  4109. 4 to 7,

4110. when the fullness of time had come,

4111. God sent forth his son

  4112. born of a woman,

  4113. born under the law

  4114. to redeem those

4115. who are under the law

4116. so that we might receive

  4117. adoption as sons.

4118. And because you are sons,

4119. God has sent the spirit

4120. of his son into our hearts

  4121. saying,

  4122. Abba, Father,

4123. so you are no longer a slave

  4124. but a son,

  4125. and if a son,

  4126. then an heir

  4127. through God.

  4128. God saw us

  4129. in our desperate state

  4130. as orphans

4131. and he sent his only son,

  4132. Jesus Christ,

4133. to pay the ransom price

  4134. for our freedom,

  4135. to win our freedom,

  4136. to rescue us

  4137. from that slavery

  4138. and then so that

  4139. he can tell us,

4140. you have a father now.

4141. You are my child now.

4142. So don't you go on living

  4143. like that orphan again.

4144. That's what Jesus did for us

4145. when he died for our sins

  4146. on the cross

4147. and was raised from the dead.

  4148. He secured for us

  4149. our redemption

  4150. and our adoption

  4151. and that's why

4152. he says in John 16

  4153. that when we pray,

4154. we pray in the name of Jesus.

4155. We pray out of our union

  4156. with Christ,

  4157. God's only son

  4158. because we now have

  4159. that sonship

  4160. and direct access

  4161. to God the Father.

  4162. You guys will have

4163. to talk about more of this

  4164. in CGs.

  4165. There's so much here

  4166. that we can unpack

4167. but I'm going to pray

  4168. and close now.

  4169. Father,

  4170. Father,

4171. show us what it means

4172. that you are our Father.

4173. Teach us how to be

  4174. more childlike

  4175. in our faith,

  4176. in our humility,

4177. in our dependence on you.

  4178. So we might pray

4179. as you want us to,

4180. as you command us to

  4181. here in this passage.

4182. In Jesus' name we pray.

  4183. Amen.

  4184. Amen.
