  1. Good morning, church. Let's open up our Bible to Matthew 6. As we continue to preach through the Sermon of the Mount. Today we're in Matthew 6, verses 25 to 34. It's a beautiful passage.

    Matthew 6:25–34

  2. Of course, as always, if you are in need of a Bible and would like to use one and keep one, feel free to raise your hand and one of our members would be happy to give you a hard copy.

  3. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  4. Heavenly Father, you are a good, good Father to those of us who were spiritual orphans, left alone, needing to fend for ourselves.

  5. But through the power of the cross, through the giving of your Son, you have adopted us into your family.

  6. So that now, though we were once poor, we are now infinitely rich in you.

  7. And I pray through the preaching, through the reading of your Word, you would convince us once again of that fact.

  8. Of how rich we are in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  9. Give us eyes to see, ears to hear, that you will take good care of us.

  10. Help us to have faith, grow our faith today.

  11. For your glory and for our good.

  12. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  13. To honor the reading of God's Word, won't you stand if you are able.

  14. It's Matthew 6, verses 25 to 34.

    Matthew 6:25–34

  15. Therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body what you will put on.

  16. It is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing.

  17. Look at the birds of the air.

  18. They neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

  19. Are you not of more value than they?

  20. And which of you, by being anxious, can add a single hour to his span of life?

  21. And why are you anxious about clothing?

  22. Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.

  23. They neither toil nor spin.

  24. Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

  25. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

  26. Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, what shall we eat?

  27. Or what shall we drink?

  28. Or what shall we wear?

  29. For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows you need them all.

  30. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

  31. Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.

  32. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

  33. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  34. You may be seated.

  35. If you've been following the news, you know that there's been a surprising topic of conversation this past year.

  36. One that seems like a very innocuous thing, but has actually struck fear into the hearts of many Americans.

  37. And that's egg prices.

  38. Because of various factors like inflation or the bird flu, we have seen an all-time high in egg prices at our local supermarkets this past year,

  39. with an all-time high this coming this past March at $6.23 for just a dozen eggs.

  40. That is an 80% increase from the prices that we saw in March of 2024, and a whopping 285% increase compared to the prices two years ago.

  41. It's no wonder, then, that prices have notoriously become a symbol of a lot of American insecurity, strife, anxiety about our money.

  42. Okay, well, maybe no more omelets for breakfast for a bit.

  43. But that's not the only expense that has gone up.

  44. According to a report by JPMorgan Chase, right now, housing affordability is at its historic low.

  45. Since the year 2000 to now, the median household income has roughly doubled, but the median home price has tripled,

  46. meaning that housing costs are increasing more and more and more each and every year,

  47. but our income levels aren't keeping up with that cost.

  48. And that gap between our income levels and the housing costs are just increasing more and more each and every year.

  49. I hope this doesn't spark a mass exodus away from the greater Boston area,

  50. but you guys know this, living in Boston is very expensive.

  51. Boston's living expenses like rent and groceries are twice the national average.

  52. And in fact, in 2024, according to Nomeo's Cost of Living Index survey,

  53. Boston ranked fifth most expensive to live in, not just in America, but in the entire world,

  54. behind Geneva, Zurich, New York City, and San Francisco.

  55. So, if you're anything like me, you're probably squirming a little bit in your seats,

  56. feeling nervous, feeling a little depressed as you hear me rattle off this news.

  57. We feel the constant bills and the increased cost of living squeezing in on us, don't we?

  58. The landlord is asking for more money next year.

  59. The car just broke down.

  60. The daycare rate just went up.

  61. And even the eggs are getting so expensive.

  62. Even if you're blessed not to have to worry about your next meal,

  63. we all worry about something, don't we?

  64. Whether it's your marriage, your relationships, your health,

  65. or maybe it's just the overall fear of death, which undergirds all the other fears.

  66. To all our anxiety, Jesus speaks peace to the raging storm within us.

  67. When he says three whole times in our passage today,

  68. do not be anxious.

  69. And he reasons with us.

  70. He gives us four different reasons today about why we shouldn't worry.

  71. Because worry is unspiritual.

  72. It is unnecessary, unproductive, and unfaithful.

  73. But the most important reason of all why we shouldn't worry is because

  74. we have a Heavenly Father who promised to take care of us.

  75. That's the main point of my sermon today.

  76. Jesus opens our passage today with the word,

  77. therefore, logically connecting this passage with the one that we heard from last week.

  78. Because in that passage, Jesus addresses a love of money for those who had it

  79. and are storing it away in earthly places where moth and rust do destroy.

  80. But in our passage today, which is almost like a part two,

  81. Jesus addresses the same issue, a love and trust of money,

  82. but only in a different scenario for those who don't have money.

  83. For there is an organic connection between greed and anxiety.

  84. Because the root issue ultimately is the same.

  85. It's a love and a trust, an idolatry of money,

  86. just appears differently under different lights, under different circumstances.

  87. They're simply two sides of the same coin.

  88. And we easily flip back from greed to anxiety very quickly.

  89. In their hearts, the homeless can be just as greedy as the Fortune 500 CEO.

  90. But the opposite is just as true.

  91. The CEO can be anxious over his money just like the homeless.

  92. Because even the wealthy are not immune from anxiety.

  93. You might expect their crazy high net worth or their mansion in Hollywood Hills

  94. to give them some kind of sense of security.

  95. But have you ever noticed that sometimes it's really the richest in this world

  96. that are actually oddly most anxious about their money?

  97. Psychologists have even coined this term for it, calling it loss aversion,

  98. which basically means that the more you have, the more you feel that you can lose.

  99. So it leads not to greater security, but to greater anxiety.

  100. Hollywood star actor Jim Carrey once said,

  101. I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything that they would want to do

  102. so that they can see that it's not the answer.

  103. If you are anxious today about your money, about your finances,

  104. getting rich and famous is not the simple answer to get rid of our anxiety.

  105. Instead, Jesus holds out for us a better way.

  106. For us not to be anxious.

  107. And we'll see how Jesus reasons with us.

  108. So let's get into the first reason that worry is unspiritual.

  109. Jesus says in verse 25,

  110. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

  111. What does he mean by this?

  112. Literally, the day after, I kid you not,

  113. the day after we moved into our new home,

  114. Christine and I, we found in our finished basement,

  115. in the center of our hallway, about a half inch of water.

  116. And after getting some help, getting some plumbers to come over,

  117. we identified that it was from this clogged sewage pipe

  118. in this tiny unfinished side room that we barely even use today.

  119. Though that water was clear on our basement water,

  120. we realized that was sewage water.

  121. And for a long, long time, until the issue was resolved,

  122. my entire life was in that little room.

  123. Because that's all that I thought about.

  124. I forgot about all the other problemless, livable space that I had in my room

  125. because my life, all of my thinking belonged into that tiny side.

  126. As Pastor Marshall Siegel shared a similar story,

  127. and he preached,

  128. anxiety can make it seem like one worry is our whole life.

  129. The difficult relationship is our life.

  130. The long jaw search is our life.

  131. The wait for a spouse is our life.

  132. The battle with chronic pain or illness is our life.

  133. But it's not.

  134. Isn't life more than whatever you're most worried about right now?

  135. There even might be times in your life

  136. where the budget is super tight,

  137. and you're really anxious about that next meal.

  138. But even then,

  139. when it feels like your next meal is your entire life,

  140. life is more than food and clothing.

  141. In other words,

  142. when we excessively worry about these things,

  143. we miss out,

  144. miss out on the more in life.

  145. Universally,

  146. humans have pondered philosophical questions like,

  147. what is the meaning of life?

  148. Why am I here on Earth?

  149. And there have been lots of different answers,

  150. lots of different stats at that question.

  151. Take Charles Darwin,

  152. the scientist who developed the pivotal theory of evolution,

  153. and hear his answer,

  154. his take on this.

  155. That everything about us,

  156. everything we do,

  157. is only about surviving to procreate,

  158. to pass down our genes to the next generation.

  159. That's it.

  160. Just physical survival.

  161. When we excessively worry,

  162. we think and we operate like Darwin.

  163. We reduce life only down to physical survival.

  164. But we know,

  165. as children of God,

  166. with people who have the Spirit of God living within us,

  167. that there is more to life than just food and clothing.

  168. For God's children,

  169. our lives have deeper spiritual purposes,

  170. like glorifying God,

  171. enjoying our relationship with Him,

  172. to live in the grace that He alone provides.

  173. Worry shrinks our world down just to the physical,

  174. making us forget about all the deeper,

  175. spiritual,

  176. eternal truths that give our life ultimate meaning.

  177. So in that sense,

  178. worry is unspiritual.

  179. But while life is more than food,

  180. at the same time,

  181. Jesus doesn't mean that food and clothing aren't important.

  182. The ultimate purpose of our lives is, yes, spiritual,

  183. but at the same time,

  184. Jesus is not agnostic,

  185. who thinks that the spiritual is all that matters,

  186. and the physical doesn't matter at all.

  187. But He goes on to say that He is going to provide for us.

  188. He doesn't say,

  189. you should be content with starving,

  190. with going cold,

  191. but promises,

  192. I'm going to take care of you.

  193. So,

  194. not only is worry unspiritual,

  195. but worry is unnecessary.

  196. What evidence does He show of that?

  197. Well,

  198. Jesus tells us to look up.

  199. Observe the birds in the sky.

  200. They neither sow,

  201. nor reap,

  202. nor gather into barns.

  203. They literally live,

  204. hand to beak.

  205. But every day still,

  206. with nothing in their bank accounts,

  207. no rainy day fund,

  208. our Heavenly Father feeds them,

  209. day after day after day.

  210. There are 50 billion birds

  211. on this planet,

  212. right here,

  213. right now.

  214. Can you imagine

  215. the number of berries,

  216. and acorns,

  217. and insects

  218. that are needed

  219. to feed so many?

  220. 50 billion birds.

  221. And yet,

  222. for thousands upon thousands of years,

  223. our Heavenly Father

  224. has fed them

  225. day after day after day.

  226. Don't just look at the birds,

  227. but look at all the earth.

  228. See how the planet is teeming,

  229. bursting with life.

  230. Because there are not just

  231. a hundred thousand,

  232. not just a million,

  233. but there are

  234. 8.7 million different animal species

  235. that are on this planet

  236. right now.

  237. Our God is the source of life.

  238. God is not a dull minimalist.

  239. When He sets our creation up,

  240. He sees,

  241. and we see our full display

  242. of His desire

  243. and His ability

  244. to sustain life.

  245. And if the Lord

  246. is sustaining

  247. 8.7 billion

  248. different animal species,

  249. and we are more important

  250. than all of them,

  251. based on what we know

  252. from the creation narrative

  253. of Genesis 1-3,

  254. that we alone

  255. are made in the

  256. imago Dei,

  257. the image of God,

  258. then how will He not

  259. also feed us,

  260. protect us,

  261. provide for us

  262. as our Heavenly Father?

  263. So look to the birds,

  264. look to all the earth,

  265. and see that worry

  266. is unnecessary.

  267. But when you observe

  268. the birds,

  269. it's an important fact

  270. to see that it's not

  271. that the Lord

  272. supernaturally

  273. sends His angels

  274. to spoon-feed

  275. each and every bird,

  276. but the birds

  277. actually have to go

  278. out from their nests,

  279. leave their trees,

  280. and go scour

  281. the land for food.

  282. So in what sense

  283. does our Heavenly Father

  284. actually feed them?

  285. It seems that Jesus

  286. draws heavily from

  287. Psalm 104,

  288. which we read

  289. for our call

  290. to worship this morning,

  291. where the psalmist

  292. extols the Lord

  293. as the sustainer

  294. and provider

  295. for all creation.

  296. It's in His

  297. sovereign providence

  298. that He provides

  299. everything that

  300. these birds need

  301. to live.

  302. He grows the trees

  303. to give them homes,

  304. He plants the bush

  305. to give them berries,

  306. He causes the sun

  307. to rise

  308. to wake them up.

  309. There are a million

  310. things that need

  311. to go right

  312. for these birds

  313. to be able to go out

  314. and find food,

  315. from the fine-tuning

  316. of physical forces

  317. like gravity,

  318. down to the sustenance,

  319. the sustaining

  320. of their little,

  321. tiny,

  322. four-chambered hearts

  323. to cause them

  324. to beat.

  325. So yes,

  326. the birds need

  327. to go out

  328. and find their own food,

  329. but it's only

  330. because of the work

  331. that the Lord

  332. has done

  333. can they do so.

  334. In the same way,

  335. our lives

  336. are not a banquet

  337. where every single

  338. blessing is handed

  339. down to us

  340. on a silver clatter.

  341. We wake up early,

  342. we labor late,

  343. we sweat

  344. for that next paycheck,

  345. yet how easy it is

  346. for us to slip

  347. into the illusion

  348. that we need

  349. to fend for ourselves,

  350. that we're alone

  351. in this world,

  352. that we are

  353. our ultimate providers,

  354. so we fight

  355. tooth and nail

  356. anxiously

  357. to secure

  358. our own futures

  359. because no one else

  360. is looking out for us.

  361. And then when

  362. that paycheck

  363. does come,

  364. we think we did it,

  365. we earned it,

  366. but the Apostle Paul

  367. asks in 1 Corinthians 4,

  368. what do you have

  369. that you did not receive?

  370. If then you received it,

  371. then why do you boast

  372. as if you did not receive it?

  373. What have you done

  374. to earn your health,

  375. friend?

  376. Or your intellect?

  377. Or all your financial

  378. and educational privileges

  379. that literally billions

  380. on this planet

  381. have no chance

  382. of receiving?

  383. even the very gift

  384. of life,

  385. have you earned

  386. any of this?

  387. So yes,

  388. work hard

  389. to put food

  390. on your plates

  391. and clothes

  392. on your back,

  393. but never think

  394. it is done

  395. by your strength alone.

  396. For as John Piper said,

  397. God is doing

  398. 10,000 things

  399. in your life

  400. right now,

  401. and you might be aware

  402. of only two

  403. or three of them.

  404. And if the Lord

  405. is doing 10,000

  406. more things

  407. in your life

  408. that you are not

  409. aware of,

  410. why do you worry?

  411. If God is sustaining

  412. 8.7 billion

  413. or million

  414. different animal

  415. species,

  416. and he promises

  417. to sustain you,

  418. why do we worry?

  419. If God

  420. is not worried,

  421. why do we worry?

  422. If you are not

  423. convinced

  424. why we shouldn't

  425. worry,

  426. and also look out

  427. to the fields,

  428. see the lilies,

  429. see how beautifully

  430. they are clothed.

  431. And while Jesus

  432. is making a similar

  433. point with the lilies,

  434. compared to the bird,

  435. he is actually making

  436. a more emphatic

  437. point of why

  438. we shouldn't worry.

  439. He does so

  440. in three different ways.

  441. First,

  442. the humble flowers

  443. of the field,

  444. they are even

  445. more transient

  446. and seemingly

  447. more insignificant

  448. than the birds.

  449. The average lily

  450. blooms only

  451. one to two weeks

  452. out of the entire

  453. calendar year,

  454. so it is no wonder

  455. that they are here

  456. in the fields one day

  457. and unapologetically

  458. thrown into the oven

  459. tomorrow.

  460. Yet the Lord

  461. adorns them

  462. with incredible

  463. beauty and care.

  464. You know,

  465. if you were to

  466. direct an animated

  467. movie,

  468. if you were to

  469. build the world

  470. from scratch,

  471. you just

  472. wouldn't pay

  473. that much

  474. attention to

  475. one small

  476. part of the

  477. background

  478. and one

  479. small tiny

  480. scene.

  481. But in the

  482. abundant,

  483. overflowing

  484. care

  485. and design

  486. of our

  487. good Heavenly

  488. Father,

  489. that's exactly

  490. what He does.

  491. Secondly,

  492. Jesus says

  493. that they don't

  494. toil or spin.

  495. And compared

  496. to the birds,

  497. they don't even

  498. lift a single

  499. finger.

  500. and yet

  501. they are

  502. clothed

  503. by God.

  504. In the

  505. ancient

  506. Near East,

  507. spinning was

  508. often the

  509. most time

  510. consuming

  511. chore in

  512. the house,

  513. requiring

  514. hundreds upon

  515. hundreds of

  516. hours to

  517. just generate

  518. one single

  519. garment.

  520. In fact,

  521. historical records

  522. show that

  523. women at the

  524. home were

  525. constantly

  526. spinning thread

  527. when they

  528. weren't doing

  529. other chores

  530. or other

  531. work.

  532. The

  533. lilies don't

  534. do this.

  535. And in

  536. fact,

  537. they don't

  538. even do

  539. anything.

  540. They do

  541. less work

  542. than the

  543. birds.

  544. And yet,

  545. God

  546. beautifully

  547. clothes them.

  548. How much

  549. more will

  550. He sustain

  551. you?

  552. Thirdly,

  553. He makes

  554. the astounding

  555. comment that

  556. even Solomon

  557. in all his

  558. glory was

  559. not fully

  560. arrayed like

  561. these.

  562. Compared

  563. to one of

  564. the richest

  565. men in

  566. really all

  567. of human

  568. history,

  569. a man

  570. who had

  571. a thousand

  572. wives,

  573. fourteen

  574. hundred

  575. chariots,

  576. twelve

  577. thousand

  578. horses,

  579. and earned

  580. and generated

  581. thirty

  582. thousand pounds

  583. of gold.

  584. Every single

  585. year,

  586. the rough

  587. equivalent

  588. now is

  589. one point

  590. four billion

  591. dollars a

  592. year.

  593. And yet,

  594. Jesus declares

  595. these common

  596. lilies are

  597. more beautifully

  598. clothed.

  599. This is

  600. absolutely a

  601. remarkable

  602. flex by

  603. God.

  604. my case

  605. in point,

  606. in prepping

  607. for the

  608. sermon,

  609. I found

  610. out that

  611. there was

  612. a t-shirt

  613. that sold

  614. for

  615. four hundred

  616. thousand

  617. dollars.

  618. I immediately

  619. got upset.

  620. And so I

  621. looked it up

  622. and I got

  623. even more

  624. upset

  625. because it

  626. looks like

  627. a regular

  628. black t-shirt

  629. with some

  630. diamonds,

  631. of course,

  632. thrown on it.

  633. But if you

  634. wore that

  635. four hundred

  636. thousand dollar

  637. t-shirt and

  638. walked by me

  639. in the street,

  640. I wouldn't even

  641. bat an eye

  642. at you.

  643. There is no

  644. way that even

  645. this four hundred

  646. thousand dollar

  647. t-shirt could

  648. compare to the

  649. beauty of the

  650. common lily.

  651. because if you

  652. zoom,

  653. you zoom into

  654. that shirt,

  655. you're going to

  656. see still,

  657. lifeless threads

  658. of cotton.

  659. If you zoom

  660. into the

  661. lily,

  662. you'll see the

  663. amazing design

  664. of our

  665. Heavenly

  666. Father.

  667. We see

  668. its dynamic

  669. cells

  670. bustling

  671. with activity,

  672. chloroplasts

  673. capturing sunlight,

  674. converting it

  675. to energy,

  676. mitochondria,

  677. the powerhouse

  678. of the cell,

  679. empowering the

  680. processes of

  681. life,

  682. nutrients

  683. being shuttled

  684. around by

  685. complex networks

  686. of membranes.

  687. Look inside

  688. the nucleus

  689. and you'll

  690. find in its

  691. DNA 36,000

  692. protein encoding

  693. genes.

  694. in a code

  695. so complex

  696. and beautiful

  697. that we're

  698. only just

  699. beginning to

  700. start to

  701. understand it.

  702. Do you know

  703. that the lily

  704. is famous

  705. among scientists

  706. for having

  707. one of the

  708. largest genomes

  709. out of any

  710. plant?

  711. In fact,

  712. it's actually

  713. 30 times

  714. longer than

  715. the human

  716. genome.

  717. If you were

  718. to stretch out

  719. the DNA

  720. of a single

  721. cell from

  722. end to end

  723. while a

  724. single human

  725. cell would

  726. contain six

  727. feet of

  728. DNA,

  729. which is

  730. incredible.

  731. We're talking

  732. about a

  733. microscopic cell.

  734. If you stretch

  735. out the

  736. instructions of

  737. life,

  738. reach out to

  739. six feet.

  740. But a

  741. cell from a

  742. lily contains

  743. almost 200

  744. feet of

  745. DNA,

  746. almost half

  747. of a football

  748. field.

  749. No room

  750. or laboratory

  751. could ever

  752. replicate this

  753. kind of living

  754. pathos.

  755. truth.

  756. With all

  757. our degrees,

  758. all our

  759. money,

  760. all our

  761. human intellect,

  762. this is

  763. beyond the

  764. best that

  765. humans could

  766. ever generate.

  767. So,

  768. why worry?

  769. If the

  770. Lord feeds

  771. billions of

  772. birds and

  773. He intricately

  774. clothes the

  775. lilies,

  776. if He says

  777. that He will

  778. provide for

  779. you just as

  780. He provided

  781. for them,

  782. worry is

  783. unnecessary.

  784. In between

  785. these examples,

  786. we find our

  787. third reason of

  788. why we

  789. shouldn't worry

  790. because He

  791. asks in

  792. verse 24,

  793. which of

  794. you by being

  795. anxious can

  796. add a

  797. single hour

  798. to His

  799. span of

  800. life?

  801. Jesus is

  802. saying that

  803. worry is

  804. unproductive.

  805. It doesn't

  806. accomplish a

  807. single thing.

  808. Because even

  809. before creation

  810. began, the

  811. Lord knew the

  812. precise day

  813. and time

  814. that He

  815. would enter

  816. this world.

  817. And He

  818. knows the

  819. precise day

  820. and time

  821. that He

  822. would leave

  823. it for a

  824. better one.

  825. No amount

  826. of worry can

  827. lengthen our

  828. lives, even

  829. just for an

  830. hour, He

  831. says.

  832. Therefore,

  833. knowing worrying

  834. is one of the

  835. most unproductive

  836. things that we

  837. can do.

  838. We should

  839. then channel

  840. that anxious

  841. energy instead

  842. through prayer,

  843. as the

  844. Apostle Paul

  845. exhorts us in

  846. Philippians 4,

  847. when he says,

  848. do not be

  849. anxious, which

  850. is the exact

  851. same phrase in

  852. the Greek as

  853. we find in

  854. our passage

  855. today.

  856. Do not be

  857. anxious about

  858. anything, but

  859. in everything, by

  860. prayer and

  861. supplication, with

  862. thanksgiving, let

  863. your requests be

  864. made known to

  865. God.

  866. I'm reminded of

  867. something from

  868. Pastor Mark

  869. Detter, who

  870. commented that the

  871. older he gets, the

  872. more convinced he

  873. is that his

  874. daily time of

  875. prayer is the

  876. most important

  877. time of his

  878. day.

  879. Because that's

  880. the time he's

  881. most certain is

  882. least wasted.

  883. Other things he

  884. might do in

  885. pastoral ministry

  886. might come to

  887. not, but that

  888. time in prayer is

  889. the most productive,

  890. least wasted time

  891. in his day.

  892. And when we

  893. pray, the peace

  894. of God, as

  895. Paul writes, the

  896. peace of God

  897. will guard our

  898. hearts and our

  899. minds.

  900. The peace of

  901. God, which

  902. surpasses all

  903. understanding, he

  904. says, will guard

  905. our hearts and

  906. our minds.

  907. In Christ Jesus,

  908. our Lord.

  909. So let's learn to

  910. humble ourselves

  911. before him,

  912. casting our

  913. burdens, throwing

  914. our burdens onto

  915. him.

  916. Why?

  917. Because he cares

  918. for us.

  919. Then skipping

  920. ahead to the

  921. end of the

  922. passage, Jesus

  923. urges his

  924. disciples not

  925. to worry about

  926. tomorrow.

  927. He says,

  928. tomorrow will

  929. be anxious for

  930. itself, making

  931. tomorrow grammatically

  932. the subject, the

  933. doer of the

  934. action.

  935. And this shift

  936. is significant.

  937. We're no longer

  938. the doer of the

  939. action, but Jesus

  940. is inviting us to

  941. step out of the

  942. driver's seat,

  943. let go of our

  944. need for control,

  945. and let tomorrow

  946. drive itself.

  947. Let tomorrow worry

  948. about its own

  949. anxieties.

  950. For just as

  951. Corrie ten Boom

  952. has powerfully

  953. stated, worry

  954. does not

  955. empty today,

  956. worry does not

  957. empty tomorrow

  958. of its sorrow.

  959. It empties

  960. today of its

  961. strength.

  962. How unproductive

  963. is worry.

  964. Of course, Jesus

  965. is not denigrating

  966. all future

  967. planning.

  968. It's often good

  969. and wise of us

  970. to exercise the

  971. sermon that God

  972. has given us to

  973. plan for the

  974. future.

  975. But once you set

  976. a plan, why

  977. worry?

  978. The Lord has

  979. promised us new

  980. mercies for each

  981. and every new

  982. day.

  983. tomorrow's

  984. mercies will

  985. rise to meet

  986. tomorrow's

  987. troubles.

  988. Next week's

  989. mercies will

  990. approach and

  991. conquer next

  992. week's troubles.

  993. worry not even

  994. in the midst of

  995. hardship because

  996. all that it does

  997. is zap you of

  998. the strength that

  999. you need today.

  1000. And we need all

  1001. the strength that

  1002. we can get,

  1003. don't we not,

  1004. because life is

  1005. hard and each

  1006. day is filled

  1007. with its own

  1008. trouble.

  1009. The rest of

  1010. this passage,

  1011. it strikes a

  1012. remarkably optimistic

  1013. tone, but this

  1014. verse is

  1015. important.

  1016. This verse 34

  1017. grounds us back to

  1018. real life, reminding

  1019. us that for

  1020. Christians, we are

  1021. not immune from

  1022. all trouble.

  1023. In fact, there

  1024. are those who do

  1025. struggle financially

  1026. and they lack

  1027. food and clothing

  1028. even to the point

  1029. of death.

  1030. But that doesn't

  1031. mean that Jesus

  1032. is being unfaithful

  1033. to his promises,

  1034. but that we can

  1035. throw this passage

  1036. all together.

  1037. Because the point

  1038. of what Jesus is

  1039. saying is not for

  1040. us to think that

  1041. will never suffer

  1042. or never even

  1043. die.

  1044. That would

  1045. stretch his promises

  1046. way too far.

  1047. But the point of

  1048. this passage is

  1049. for us to live

  1050. with the absolute

  1051. assurance that our

  1052. good Heavenly

  1053. Father will take

  1054. care of us.

  1055. That he, as we

  1056. just said, will

  1057. work all things

  1058. for our good.

  1059. God will not

  1060. live with a

  1061. childlike confidence

  1062. that we will not

  1063. go a day without

  1064. food unless the

  1065. Lord wills it.

  1066. That we will not

  1067. go cold unless the

  1068. Lord wills it.

  1069. That we will not

  1070. die a second sooner

  1071. than God wills it.

  1072. No amount of

  1073. worrying can change

  1074. any of that because

  1075. worry is unproductive.

  1076. We come to the

  1077. final reason of

  1078. why we shouldn't

  1079. worry because worry

  1080. is ultimately

  1081. unfaithful.

  1082. At the end of

  1083. verse 30, Jesus

  1084. gently rebukes his

  1085. disciples for worrying

  1086. for their little

  1087. faith.

  1088. When he addresses

  1089. them, oh you, oh

  1090. you of little

  1091. faith.

  1092. About five times

  1093. in the Gospels do

  1094. you find Jesus

  1095. gently rebuking his

  1096. disciples using the

  1097. same exact phrase.

  1098. You see, Jesus has

  1099. never, ever rebuked

  1100. his disciples for

  1101. their lack of

  1102. ability or

  1103. intellect or

  1104. resourcefulness or

  1105. preparedness.

  1106. But he has rebuked

  1107. them for their

  1108. little faith.

  1109. For their lack of

  1110. trust that God can

  1111. and will provide and

  1112. protect his

  1113. children.

  1114. even after they've

  1115. witnessed supernatural

  1116. miracle after miracle,

  1117. they've seen with

  1118. their own two eyes

  1119. Jesus turning water

  1120. into wine, feeding

  1121. 5,000 plus with five

  1122. loaves and two fish,

  1123. and then doing it

  1124. again by feeding 4,000

  1125. plus with seven loaves

  1126. and a few fish.

  1127. Yet they doubted.

  1128. They questioned if

  1129. God can protect

  1130. and provide for

  1131. them.

1132. Are we not in the

  1133. same boat, brothers

  1134. and sisters?

  1135. We do well to

  1136. believe that Jesus

  1137. Christ has provided

  1138. for us the spiritual

  1139. bread of his flesh,

  1140. the drink of his

  1141. blood, the clothing

  1142. of his righteousness.

  1143. But often when it

  1144. comes to actual

  1145. physical food and

  1146. clothing, we

  1147. struggle to believe.

  1148. That's exactly what

  1149. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  1150. observes when he

  1151. says, I once heard

  1152. a man use a phrase

  1153. which affected me

  1154. very deeply at the

  1155. time and still

  1156. does.

  1157. He said that the

  1158. trouble with many of

  1159. us Christians is

  1160. that we believe on

  1161. the Lord Jesus

  1162. Christ, but that we

  1163. do not believe him.

  1164. He meant that we

  1165. believe on him for

  1166. the salvation of

  1167. our souls, but we

  1168. do not believe

  1169. believe him when he

  1170. says such a thing

  1171. like this to us,

  1172. that God is going

  1173. to look after our

  1174. food and drink and

  1175. even our clothing.

1176. How easy it is for

1177. us to lack faith that

  1178. God will provide for

  1179. us.

  1180. If we lack faith,

  1181. we'll be like the

  1182. Gentiles.

  1183. As verse 32 goes,

  1184. for while the

  1185. Gentiles seek after

  1186. all these things,

  1187. your heavenly father

  1188. knows that you need

  1189. them.

  1190. God is unfaithful.

  1191. Again, worry is

  1192. unfaithful because

  1193. it's the behavior of

  1194. godless Gentiles.

  1195. Worrying is to be

  1196. expected from the

  1197. spiritual orphans in

  1198. this world.

  1199. Worrying is uncharacteristic

1200. of the child of God.

  1201. Every time that I've

  1202. met up with my

  1203. parents these past

  1204. three years, they

  1205. without fail give my

  1206. wife Christine and

  1207. me two dozen baked

  1208. eggs.

  1209. I made the silly

  1210. mistake of saying out

1211. loud that I like them

  1212. three years ago, which

  1213. somehow translated in

1214. their minds that I will

1215. always like them and I

  1216. will always never get

  1217. sick of them.

  1218. But because of their

  1219. love for us, every

1220. time I see them rain or

  1221. shine, whether the

  1222. egg prices are through

  1223. the roof or not,

  1224. they're always greeting

  1225. us with two dozen

  1226. baked eggs.

  1227. And those eggs are

1228. just a small part of

1229. the strength I get from

  1230. the support of my

  1231. loving parents.

  1232. They don't get to

1233. visit a ton, but when

  1234. they're home with us,

1235. even when I feel like

1236. life is crazy and I

  1237. feel like there's just

1238. so many things to do

1239. and so many things to

1240. worry about and I feel

  1241. anxious and distracted,

  1242. I feel a sense that

  1243. everything is going to

  1244. be okay.

1245. Like I'm not alone in

  1246. this big scary world,

1247. but I have people that

1248. are on my side to

  1249. support me, cheer me

  1250. on, root for me.

  1251. I know how privileged

1252. we are to have the

  1253. support of loving

  1254. parents and I know

  1255. that some of you

  1256. don't have that

  1257. opportunity and that

  1258. blessing.

  1259. But this church family,

  1260. brothers and sisters,

1261. we all share in a

  1262. greater love, in a

  1263. greater protection and

  1264. greater support from

  1265. our heavenly Father,

  1266. Father, a Father who

  1267. does far more than

  1268. just bake off two

  1269. dozen eggs, but a

  1270. Father who provides

  1271. lovingly every single

  1272. thing that we need.

  1273. So knowing that you

  1274. have this kind of

  1275. heavenly Father, don't

  1276. be anxious, but

  1277. instead seek first the

1278. kingdom of God and his

  1279. righteousness.

  1280. We come to the

  1281. pivotal verse 33 in

  1282. our passage.

  1283. Do you notice how

  1284. much of what Jesus

  1285. is saying today is

  1286. about our vision?

  1287. Continuing that theme

  1288. from last week.

  1289. Look at the birds,

  1290. look at the lilies,

  1291. and unlike the

  1292. Gentiles who only look

  1293. after their food and

  1294. clothing, you look,

  1295. seek for the kingdom

  1296. of God and his

  1297. righteousness.

  1298. In fact, the central

  1299. verb in this passage,

1300. do not be anxious, in

  1301. the Greek, it literally

  1302. means not to be

  1303. double-minded, but it

  1304. means to be single-minded,

  1305. undistracted, focused on

  1306. just one thing.

1307. It's the same word that

  1308. Jesus uses when he

  1309. addresses Martha in

  1310. Luke 10, when she's

  1311. troubled about many,

  1312. many things.

  1313. Remember there,

  1314. Jesus and presumably

  1315. his 12 disciples

  1316. drop by Martha's

  1317. house.

  1318. Some of us get

  1319. stressed when one

  1320. person drops in

  1321. randomly, but let

  1322. alone 13, not just

1323. any 13, but the very

1324. Son of God, and his

  1325. super-important

  1326. capital-A

  1327. apostles.

  1328. No wonder Martha

  1329. feels the need,

  1330. then, to cook the

  1331. bread.

  1332. Cut up fruit.

  1333. Offer clean water

  1334. to wash.

  1335. Sweep the floor.

  1336. Tidy the main room.

  1337. Arrange the seating.

  1338. Add oil to the

  1339. lamps.

  1340. Oh, there's so much

  1341. to do.

  1342. But out of the

  1343. corner of her eyes,

  1344. she sees her

  1345. sister Mary.

  1346. And she's just

  1347. sitting there,

  1348. chilling with

  1349. Jesus.

  1350. As her chamber

  1351. fills and builds,

  1352. she then pumps

  1353. off and vents to

  1354. Jesus.

  1355. Lord, do you not

  1356. care?

  1357. Do you not care

  1358. that my sister has

  1359. left me to serve

  1360. alone?

  1361. Tell her then to

  1362. help me.

  1363. Jesus gently

  1364. corrects her.

  1365. Martha, Martha,

  1366. you are anxious.

  1367. You are anxious.

  1368. In trouble about

  1369. many things.

  1370. But one thing

  1371. is necessary.

  1372. Jesus today

  1373. sees how anxious,

  1374. distracted,

  1375. busy-bodied we are.

  1376. The company

  1377. is starting to make

  1378. layoffs.

  1379. My kids need money

  1380. for college.

  1381. The rent is

  1382. getting higher.

  1383. My parent is sick.

  1384. School loans

  1385. are due.

  1386. The roof is leaking.

  1387. And the eggs

  1388. are so expensive.

  1389. Lord, do you

  1390. not care about me?

  1391. Hear Jesus

  1392. speak to you.

  1393. Child,

  1394. child,

  1395. you are anxious.

  1396. In trouble

  1397. about many things.

  1398. but one thing

  1399. is necessary.

  1400. That one thing

  1401. should be to seek

  1402. the kingdom of God

  1403. and his righteousness.

1404. At the risk of this

  1405. merely becoming

  1406. a slogan,

  1407. let's talk about

  1408. what this phrase

  1409. actually means.

  1410. We already read

  1411. an example of this

  1412. a couple passages ago

  1413. in the Lord's Prayer.

  1414. Where the prayer

  1415. starts not off

  1416. with,

  1417. give me

  1418. my daily bread.

1419. But how does it start?

  1420. It starts with,

  1421. hallowed be your name.

  1422. Your kingdom come.

  1423. Your will

  1424. be done.

  1425. So we are to

  1426. prioritize first

  1427. not

  1428. food and clothing,

  1429. not our physical

  1430. survival,

  1431. but

  1432. to seek

  1433. first

  1434. living under

  1435. the kingship

  1436. of God.

  1437. of course

  1438. whether you

  1439. like it or not,

  1440. we all live

  1441. under the sovereign

  1442. reign

  1443. of the king.

  1444. But seeking

  1445. first the kingdom

  1446. of God

  1447. means to live

  1448. in a way

  1449. that you recognize,

  1450. rely,

  1451. rejoice,

  1452. and revere

  1453. God as your king.

  1454. Then we live out

  1455. then

  1456. the fifth

  1457. beatitude

  1458. to hunger

  1459. and thirst

  1460. for righteousness.

  1461. And we make it

  1462. our deepest

  1463. wish

  1464. to be holy,

  1465. to be righteous,

  1466. to grow

  1467. in

  1468. obeying

  1469. all of his

  1470. commandments.

  1471. So seek

  1472. first the kingdom

  1473. of God

  1474. and his righteousness.

  1475. And then

  1476. all these other

  1477. things will be

  1478. added to you.

  1479. Just like

  1480. the king

  1481. Solomon,

  1482. he prayed

  1483. for wisdom

  1484. and all these

  1485. other things

  1486. came along

  1487. with it.

  1488. If we seek

  1489. first the kingdom

  1490. of God,

  1491. all these other

  1492. things will be

  1493. added to you.

  1494. But what's

  1495. the greatest

  1496. evidence of this?

  1497. We already see

  1498. evidence of this

  1499. in creation,

  1500. in the lilies,

  1501. in the birds,

  1502. but the greatest

  1503. evidence we have

  1504. of the care

  1505. of our heavenly

  1506. father is in

  1507. the giving

  1508. and sacrifice

  1509. of his only

  1510. son.

  1511. In another

  1512. lesser to

  1513. greater argument,

  1514. the apostle Paul

  1515. writes in Romans

  1516. 8.32,

  1517. He who did not

  1518. spare his own

  1519. son,

  1520. but graciously

  1521. gave him

  1522. all.

  1523. How will he

  1524. not also

  1525. graciously with

  1526. him give

  1527. us all

  1528. things?

  1529. If our

  1530. heavenly father

  1531. has given

  1532. his very own

  1533. son,

  1534. he's done

  1535. the hardest

  1536. thing possible,

  1537. sacrificing

  1538. his son,

  1539. how will he

  1540. not also

  1541. with him

  1542. graciously

  1543. give you

  1544. all that

  1545. you need?

  1546. If he's

  1547. already proven

  1548. his generous

  1549. love for

  1550. you,

  1551. how will he

  1552. not also

  1553. give you

  1554. the lesser

  1555. things like

  1556. food and

  1557. clothing?

  1558. For the

  1559. good news

  1560. of the

  1561. gospel is

  1562. that though

  1563. Jesus Christ

  1564. was rich,

  1565. yet for

  1566. your sake

  1567. he became

  1568. poor,

  1569. so that

  1570. you,

  1571. you,

  1572. by his

  1573. poverty,

  1574. might become

  1575. rich.

  1576. This is one

  1577. of the

  1578. greatest

  1579. one-verse

  1580. pictures of

  1581. the gospel

  1582. finding

  1583. scripture.

  1584. That though

  1585. Jesus was

  1586. king in

  1587. heaven,

  1588. he humbled

  1589. himself by

  1590. becoming

  1591. flesh,

  1592. not by

  1593. being born

  1594. as royalty,

  1595. but as a

  1596. carpenter's

  1597. son in a

  1598. manger.

  1599. And then

  1600. though he

  1601. did not

  1602. deserve this

  1603. at all,

  1604. because he

  1605. never sinned,

  1606. but he

  1607. was mocked,

  1608. spit upon

  1609. wit,

  1610. and nailed

  1611. to the

  1612. cross.

  1613. For the

  1614. forgiveness

  1615. of our

  1616. sins,

  1617. for those

  1618. of us

  1619. who were

  1620. spiritually

  1621. bankrupt,

  1622. he were

  1623. dead in

  1624. our sins,

  1625. that we

  1626. were unfaithful

  1627. in our

  1628. doubt,

  1629. in our

  1630. worry,

  1631. he took

  1632. our

  1633. place.

  1634. Because

  1635. unlike the

  1636. birds,

  1637. he went

  1638. hungry.

  1639. Unlike

  1640. the lilies,

  1641. he went

  1642. naked,

  1643. so that

  1644. poor and

  1645. wretched

  1646. sinners like

  1647. you and

  1648. me might

  1649. be clothed

  1650. and fed

  1651. in this

  1652. life and

  1653. more fully

  1654. to the

  1655. life to

  1656. come.

  1657. Do you

  1658. see,

  1659. brothers and

  1660. sisters,

  1661. how incredibly

  1662. rich you

  1663. are?

  1664. Satan,

  1665. he tries to

  1666. make you feel

  1667. poor.

  1668. He does.

  1669. By squeezing

  1670. you tight with

  1671. the bills in

  1672. life,

  1673. by making you

  1674. compare your

  1675. life with

  1676. other people

  1677. in this

  1678. world,

  1679. by depressing

  1680. you with

  1681. news,

  1682. by how

  1683. expensive the

  1684. eggs are.

  1685. But if you

  1686. think that you

  1687. are poor,

  1688. Satan has

  1689. convinced you

  1690. of a lie.

  1691. Because,

  1692. brothers and

  1693. sisters,

  1694. you are

  1695. unimaginably

  1696. rich.

  1697. You have

  1698. been blessed

  1699. with every

  1700. spiritual blessing

  1701. by the power

  1702. and the

  1703. glorious riches

  1704. of his

  1705. grace.

  1706. You are

  1707. adopted into

  1708. his family,

  1709. set to

  1710. receive an

  1711. unfathomable

  1712. inheritance

  1713. and have

  1714. you.

  1715. Though you

  1716. have nothing

  1717. else in

  1718. life,

  1719. if you

  1720. have Christ,

  1721. you are

  1722. unimaginably

  1723. rich.

  1724. The

  1725. inverse of

  1726. this is

  1727. true.

  1728. If you

  1729. don't have

  1730. Christ,

  1731. you own

  1732. the world,

  1733. you,

  1734. my friend,

  1735. you are

  1736. of the

  1737. poorest.

  1738. If you're

  1739. here today

  1740. and don't

  1741. know the

  1742. riches that

  1743. are found

  1744. alone in

  1745. Jesus Christ,

  1746. consider this

  1747. a free

  1748. invitation to

  1749. become rich.

  1750. Oh, so

  1751. rich, richer

  1752. than you

  1753. could ever

  1754. imagine.

  1755. Once you

  1756. receive Jesus

  1757. Christ as

  1758. your Lord and

  1759. Savior and

  1760. treasure, you

  1761. will have

  1762. enduring riches

  1763. that go beyond

  1764. any life

  1765. circumstance,

  1766. any financial

  1767. season.

  1768. Because the

  1769. rest of the

  1770. world, they

  1771. get high when

  1772. things go

  1773. well.

  1774. But they

  1775. plummet to

  1776. the depths

  1777. when things

  1778. are tough.

  1779. Augustine

  1780. rightly said,

  1781. fear is a

  1782. response of

  1783. the human

  1784. heart when

  1785. it's one

  1786. thing is

  1787. threatening.

  1788. But if

  1789. Christ is

  1790. your one

  1791. thing,

  1792. if you

  1793. make it

  1794. your one

  1795. thing to

  1796. seek after

  1797. the kingdom

  1798. of God

  1799. and his

  1800. righteousness,

  1801. then we

  1802. can find

  1803. this rare

  1804. jewel of

  1805. Christian

  1806. contend,

  1807. as Jeremiah

  1808. Burroughs

  1809. writes,

  1810. though I

  1811. have not

  1812. outward

  1813. comforts and

  1814. worldly

  1815. conveniences to

  1816. supply my

  1817. necessities,

  1818. yet I

  1819. have a

  1820. sufficient

  1821. portion

  1822. between

  1823. Christ and

  1824. my soul

  1825. abundantly

  1826. to supply

  1827. me,

  1828. satisfy me

  1829. in every

  1830. condition.

  1831. If I

  1832. have but

  1833. Christ with

  1834. me, I

  1835. have

  1836. enough,

  1837. he is

  1838. bread to

  1839. the hungry,

  1840. water to

  1841. the thirsty,

  1842. a garment

  1843. to the

  1844. naked,

  1845. health to

  1846. the sick,

  1847. and life

  1848. to the

  1849. dead.

  1850. Let me

  1851. have Christ

  1852. and I

  1853. can want

  1854. nothing.

  1855. He is

  1856. all in

  1857. all,

  1858. and in

  1859. him I

  1860. have all.

  1861. Christ is

  1862. your one

  1863. thing.

  1864. If you

  1865. seek the

  1866. kingdom of

  1867. God and

  1868. his

  1869. righteousness,

  1870. then whatever

  1871. season you

  1872. go through

  1873. right now

  1874. or in the

  1875. future,

  1876. this good

  1877. portion will

  1878. never be

  1879. taken away

  1880. from you.

  1881. From this

  1882. time forth

  1883. and forever

  1884. more.

  1885. Brothers and

  1886. sisters,

  1887. let us not

  1888. be anxious

  1889. because we

  1890. have a good

  1891. heavenly

  1892. father who

  1893. will take

  1894. care of

  1895. us.

  1896. Let's

  1897. pray.

  1898. Lord,

  1899. we believe

  1900. help our

  1901. unbelief.

  1902. Lord,

  1903. we believe

  1904. help our

  1905. unbelief.

  1906. We want

  1907. to do all

  1908. things in

  1909. faith.

  1910. No matter

  1911. what season

  1912. that comes,

  1913. no matter

  1914. what obstacles

  1915. are in our

  1916. way,

  1917. we know

  1918. that we

  1919. are stupid

  1920. rich in

  1921. you,

  1922. Christ.

  1923. We are

  1924. unimaginably

  1925. rich,

  1926. set to

  1927. receive a

  1928. glorious

  1929. inheritance.

  1930. thank you,

  1931. Lord,

  1932. that you

  1933. have reversed

  1934. our entire

  1935. lives,

  1936. our fortunes,

  1937. by giving

  1938. us the

  1939. greatest

  1940. blessing

  1941. of heaven.

  1942. There is

  1943. nothing more

  1944. for you to

  1945. give.

  1946. We look

  1947. to you,

  1948. we depend

  1949. on you,

  1950. and we

  1951. seek you

  1952. first.

  1953. In Jesus'

  1954. name we

  1955. pray.

  1956. Amen.
