  1. Turn with me in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. I have no idea how long this sermon is, because I usually need to move it to a word processing

  4. document and then look at the page numbers to see how long it is.

  5. And so hopefully we're not here for three hours, but I think, and I trust that we'll

  6. be okay.

  7. So please bear with me.

  8. Matthew chapter 7, verses 13 to 27.

    Matthew 7:13–27

  9. The main substance of Jesus' teaching in the Sermon on the Mount has been concluded, and

  10. so now he is really bringing everything to a close, at that point, tying a bow on it,

  11. with a series of warnings highlighting the importance of obeying and putting into practice

  12. everything he has taught in the Sermon on the Mount.

  13. And so that's where we are today, Matthew 7, 13 to 27.

  14. But before I read, let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  15. Heavenly Father, this is your Word, and we are your people.

  16. So we humble ourselves before your Word and place ourselves under your authority.

  17. It is a hard word, but you give it, Lord, because you love us.

  18. So help us to receive it, and help us to not be hearers of the Word only, but doers of the Word.

  19. Energized by your grace in Jesus Christ, empowered by your Holy Spirit.

  20. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

  21. If you are able, please stand to honor God as we read from His Word, as He addresses us in and through His Word.

  22. Matthew 7, 13 to 27.

  23. Enter by the narrow gate.

  24. For the gate is wide, and the way is easy that leads to destruction.

  25. And those who enter by it are many.

  26. For the gate is narrow, and the way is hard that leads to life.

  27. And those who find it are few.

  28. Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

  29. You will recognize them by their fruits.

  30. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?

  31. So every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.

  32. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.

  33. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

  34. Thus, you will recognize them by their fruits.

  35. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

  36. On that day, many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?

  37. And then will I declare to them, I never knew you.

  38. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.

  39. Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

  40. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on the rock.

  41. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

  42. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.

  43. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  44. Please be seated.

  45. There are billions of professing Christians in the world today.

  46. There have been billions more throughout history.

  47. But what if many of those professing Christians don't actually make it into the kingdom of heaven?

  48. What if God's word teaches us that many who profess Christ outwardly will not actually be saved?

  49. On the one hand, it's true that the Bible teaches us that in the end, the saints of God will be an innumerable throng.

  50. Revelation 7, 9 describes that throng.

  51. It says,

  52. There's going to be many of us in the end, the cumulative number.

  53. The cumulative total of all saints throughout all history will indeed be an innumerable throng.

  54. On the other hand, the Bible also teaches us consistently of the fact that, relatively speaking, compared to the rest of the world,

  55. at every time and juncture in human history, those who believe and trust in him and who are actual regenerate Christians are few.

  56. In the parable of the wedding feast, later in Matthew 22, 1-14, Jesus says that many who are invited to the wedding feast,

  57. which symbolizes heavenly bliss and in the fellowship with God, they actually do not come, even though they've been invited.

  58. And some who come to the feast, they show up, it says, with no wedding garment, meaning they don't have the means.

  59. They don't have, they've not been cleansed by Christ.

  60. They don't have the right to enter in.

  61. And so they are cast into the outer darkness.

  62. Jesus, then, at the conclusion of that parable, says this,

  63. Many are called, but few are chosen.

  64. In Luke 13, 23-24, someone asks Jesus explicitly,

  65. Lord, will those who are saved be few?

  66. And Jesus gives him a straight answer.

  67. Strive to enter the narrow door.

  68. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

  69. Meaning, there will be a few.

  70. This passage is what parallels our passage this morning in Matthew 7, 13-14, where Jesus says,

  71. Enter by the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction.

  72. And those who enter by it are many.

  73. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life.

  74. And those who find it are few.

  75. How, then, can we tell true Christians apart from the false Christians?

  76. From those who, true Christians who are on the narrow gate and the narrow way,

  77. from those who are on the broad way to destruction?

  78. Jesus' answer is obedience.

  79. And the key word that recurs throughout this passage is the word do.

  80. It began with verse 12, which summarizes the ethical commands of the entire Sermon on the Mount

  81. and, indeed, of the entire law and the prophets, where it says,

  82. Do to others what you wish they would do to you.

  83. The word do, it first occurred there.

  84. And then you see it again in verses 17-19, where it says,

  85. So every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.

  86. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.

  87. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

  88. The word that's used there, translated as bear, in Greek,

  89. is actually the exact same word that's translated do, earlier in verse 12.

  90. So if you translate it literally, it would be that every healthy tree does good fruit,

  91. produces good fruit.

  92. This theme of doing continues in verse 21.

  93. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven.

  94. Then who will enter the kingdom of heaven?

  95. But the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

  96. Similarly, Jesus says in verse 24 and 26,

  97. Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

  98. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

  99. Given this prominent theme, we can summarize Jesus' main point in this passage with the words of James 1.22.

  100. Be doers of the word and not hearers only.

  101. To drive his point home, Jesus gives us four illustrations, really warning vignettes,

  102. that emphasize the importance of doing God's will, not just hearing it.

  103. And he warns us against four types of people, that we should not be like that,

  104. and also warns us against such people who will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

  105. First, I'm going to call drifters, people who are drifting along with the patterns of this world and conforming to the patterns of this world, conformists.

  106. Second, deceivers or imposters, the wolves in sheep's clothing.

  107. Third, the deluded, those who think that they are saved but are not, but are actually hypocrites.

  108. And lastly, the dabblers or the dilettantes who dabble in the faith, who hear things and pick up things here and there,

  109. but are not actually practicing it and living by it.

  110. Jesus' first warning concerns the conformists.

  111. He says in verses 13 to 14,

  112. This is a decision that confronts every man and every woman, and there's no way around it.

  113. Jesus makes several stark contrasts between these two spiritual options.

  114. And these two options differ in four ways.

  115. First, in the point of entry.

  116. Second, in the path itself.

  117. Third, in the people, the number of people who choose them.

  118. And fourth, and finally, in their destination, where it leads.

  119. First, the point of entry is different.

  120. Jesus tells us to enter by the narrow gate,

  121. but in contrast, the other gate is wide.

  122. The narrow gate implies a high barrier for entry.

  123. The wide gate implies a low barrier for entry.

  124. Repeatedly in the ensuing chapters, Jesus speaks of the high cost of following him.

  125. He says that his disciples are like sheep in the midst of wolves.

  126. What happens to sheep in the midst of wolves?

  127. They get devoured.

  128. He says in the same way, you will be persecuted.

  129. You'll be reviled.

  130. You will be killed for his name's sake.

  131. Matthew 10, 16 to 33.

  132. Similarly, he says in Matthew 16, 24 to 26.

  133. If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

  134. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

  135. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?

  136. According to Jesus, following him entails losing our lives.

  137. Counting our very lives forfeit for the sake of following Christ.

  138. It means denying ourselves our own selfish purposes and priorities and submitting them to God's purposes and priorities.

  139. It involves taking up our own cross, dying to our sinful desires, and saying along with the apostle Paul in Galatians 2, 20,

  140. I have been crucified with Christ.

  141. I no longer live, but Christ lives within me.

  142. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.

  143. According to Jesus, following him entails first, losing our lives.

  144. Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

  145. We must lose our lives.

  146. And a necessary corollary to that is that we must also lose the world.

  147. Jesus says, what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world yet forfeits his soul?

  148. We must lose the world.

  149. James 4, 4 says this,

  150. Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?

  151. Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

  152. What exactly is the world?

  153. 1 John 2, 15 to 16 explains,

  154. Do not love the world or the things in the world.

  155. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  156. For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life

  157. is not from the Father, but is from the world.

  158. In order to follow after Christ, we must leave the sinful world behind.

  159. This is what it means to enter by the narrow gate.

  160. I imagine a narrow passageway, maybe in the cave,

  161. from a scene in The Lord of the Rings or something in the two towers,

  162. where you have to drop all your bags, you have to leave your horse behind,

  163. because it's only barely narrow enough for you to get through with your body.

  164. Or I imagine this like crawl like hobbit hole, you know,

  165. where you have to get on your hands and knees,

  166. and you have to crawl through because it is so small and narrow.

  167. The narrow gate through which every Christian is saved

  168. is one that requires us to humble ourselves before God.

  169. It requires submission to the Lord and renunciation of the world.

  170. The other gate, on the other hand, is wide.

  171. In fact, it's so wide, it's almost as if there's no gate at all.

  172. It says those who enter by it are many.

  173. The barrier for entry is very low.

  174. So low, in fact, it's as if there's no barrier,

  175. because this is the default gate at which every single human being finds him or herself.

  176. No tickets are required.

  177. There are no security guards.

  178. There are no bag limits.

  179. This gate is wide.

  180. It's open to everyone.

  181. Anyone.

  182. There's something about this notion of inclusivity and openness

  183. that appeals to people who are naturally compassionate and considerate toward people,

  184. which that, in and of itself, is a good thing.

  185. Who among us wants to be known as the exclusive one, right?

  186. For this reason, well-meaning Christians sometimes lower the bar,

  187. and they widen the gate.

  188. Oh, you don't believe certain fundamental doctrines of the faith.

  189. Oh, you disagree with the Bible's ethical teachings.

  190. Oh, you're living in willful disobedience to God's commands

  191. because you don't think that that particular command is important.

  192. Don't worry about it.

  193. Don't worry about it.

  194. Come right in.

  195. God is gracious.

  196. He overlooks our sins.

  197. Everyone is entitled to the freedom of conscience.

  198. The problem with that approach

  199. is that we do not have the authority to widen the gate.

  200. We think that we have widened the right gate for people to enter in.

  201. What we have actually done is direct them to the wrong gate,

  202. to the wide gate and the easy way that leads to destruction,

  203. not the narrow gate and the hard way that leads to life.

  204. However compassionate and considerate it might appear to us,

  205. giving people a sense of security,

  206. a false sense of assurance,

  207. on the broad way to destruction,

  208. is not compassion but cruelty.

  209. Second, the two spiritual options before us also differ in their path or way.

  210. The way to life is hard,

  211. but the way to destruction is easy.

  212. The words hard and easy don't quite capture the imagery

  213. that's being employed here by Jesus.

  214. The word translated easy here in the ESV

  215. is not the exact same word that was translated in the earlier verses wide,

  216. but it has a similar meaning.

  217. It's a word that means broad and spacious.

  218. This path is easy because it is broad and roomy.

  219. Imagine a well-paved 10-lane highway

  220. like the ones you see in California,

  221. though somehow they still have traffic in it.

  222. You have all the room you could want.

  223. You can do somersaults on it and cartwheels on it,

  224. and you never have to worry about falling off the road.

  225. The word translated hard, on the other hand,

  226. in verse 14, is also not the same word

  227. that's translated as narrow,

  228. but it's also a similar word.

  229. It's a word that means to press upon or to be narrow.

  230. It's a word that describes the crowd

  231. pressing in against Jesus in Mark 3, 9,

  232. so that it says that his disciples fear that he might be crushed.

  233. It's the same word that's used in the New International Version

  234. of 2 Corinthians 4, verse 8,

    2 Corinthians 4:8

  235. to describe the life of faithful followers of Christ.

  236. It says that we are hard-pressed on every side.

  237. That's the same word, but not crushed.

  238. So the reason why this way is hard

  239. is because it is narrow.

  240. It's tight.

  241. Imagine a wilderness journey

  242. where you have a narrow sliver of path to walk on,

  243. and you have little room to the left or to the right.

  244. You're pressed in by rocks and crags

  245. and tree branches and bushes everywhere,

  246. and you're navigating through this hard-pressed path.

  247. The Christian's pilgrim journey is like that.

  248. We are afflicted in every way,

  249. but not crushed.

  250. Perplexed, but not driven to despair.

  251. Persecuted, but not forsaken.

  252. Struck down, but not destroyed.

  253. Becoming a Christian does not make your life

  254. automatically smooth and easy.

  255. Jesus guaranteed to us in John 16, 33,

  256. in this world you will have tribulation.

  257. And 2 Timothy 3, 12 says,

  258. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life

  259. in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  260. The broad way that leads to destruction is easy.

  261. It's smooth.

  262. It's well-paved and inviting

  263. because it's the path that appeals

  264. to the sinful, natural man.

  265. It's the path that fits with,

  266. that's conformed to the well-grooved patterns

  267. of our sinful world.

  268. So it is natural,

  269. it feels natural to go down that path.

  270. But the narrow way that leads to life

  271. is hard, full of toil and pain.

  272. Why?

  273. Because our sinful flesh rails against this way,

  274. against the Spirit of God within us.

  275. As it says in Galatians 5, 16 to 17,

  276. we must fight to keep in step with the Spirit.

  277. We must fight to mortify our sinful flesh,

  278. disciplining our body and keeping it under control,

  279. as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9, 27,

  280. laying aside every weight and sin

  281. which clings so closely,

  282. and running with endurance the race

  283. that is set before us,

  284. as it says in Hebrews 12, verse 1.

    Hebrews 12:1

  285. Our sinful flesh resists the way.

  286. The sinful world also resists the way of God.

  287. It pressures us to conform to the sinful values

  288. and patterns of this world,

  289. and when we don't,

  290. it ostracizes us and persecutes us.

  291. So we must fight daily

  292. to renew our minds in God's Word

  293. and to be transformed in doing so.

  294. So the world resists it,

  295. our sinful flesh resists it,

  296. and the devil also resists it.

  297. He rages against the people of God,

  298. prowling around like a roaring lion,

  299. seeking someone to devour,

  300. as it says in 1 Peter 5, 8 to 9.

  301. And we must stand in faith firmly and resist them,

  302. putting the whole armor of God

  303. through prayer and supplication

  304. and by wielding the sword of the Spirit,

  305. which is the Word of God,

  306. as it says in Ephesians 6.

  307. So these two spiritual options

  308. differ in the point of entry,

  309. they differ in the way itself,

  310. and third,

  311. they differ in the number of people who enter them.

  312. Those who enter by the wide gate

  313. and the broad way,

  314. it says,

  315. are many.

  316. But those who enter the small gate

  317. and the narrow road are few.

  318. In other words,

  319. the path of the Christian disciple

  320. is not popular.

  321. It's not the normal way

  322. in this sinful world.

  323. Right at the onset,

  324. Jesus is counseling us

  325. to give up the hope

  326. of world's acceptance

  327. and acclaim.

  328. Even in historical times

  329. when there was great revival

  330. among the churches of God,

  331. like the first century

  332. that we see recorded in the book of Acts,

  333. even in such times,

  334. Christians were always

  335. a small minority.

  336. The sinful world hates

  337. the light of Christ

  338. because they don't want

  339. their dark evil deeds

  340. to be exposed,

  341. as it says in John 3.20.

  342. Christians are never going to be

  343. loved by this world

  344. because our belief

  345. exposes their unbelief,

  346. because our obedience

  347. exposes their disobedience to God.

  348. If we are ever approved

  349. by this world

  350. or acclaimed by this world,

  351. that should be a cause

  352. not for celebration

  353. but concern.

  354. Jesus said in the Beatitudes

  355. earlier in Matthew 5.11-12,

  356. Blessed are you

  357. when others revile you

  358. and persecute you

  359. and utter all kinds of evil

  360. against you on account of me.

  361. Rejoice and be glad

  362. for great is your reward in heaven.

  363. For so they persecute

  364. the prophets who are before you.

  365. In the same parallel,

  366. the Beatitudes,

  367. in Luke 6.26,

  368. Jesus adds this,

  369. Woe to you

  370. when all people speak well of you,

  371. for so their fathers did

  372. to the false prophets.

  373. If we find ourselves

  374. aligned with the many people

  375. of this world

  376. and not with the few

  377. of Christ's disciples,

  378. that's not a sign

  379. that we're this enlightened Christian

  380. who's not like those other

  381. backwards and bigoted Christians.

  382. More likely than that,

  383. we are on the broad way

  384. that leads to destruction

  385. and the world sees nothing

  386. in us to persecute.

  387. Brothers and sisters in Christ,

  388. are you spoken ill of

  389. by the people of this world?

  390. Then take heart.

  391. Be encouraged.

  392. For that's how all the faithful people

  393. of God in past ages

  394. have been treated.

  395. So Jesus is here warning us

  396. that the conformists

  397. who drift along the currents

  398. of this world

  399. rather than swimming upstream

  400. against the current,

  401. those who fear the judgment of man

  402. more than the judgment of God

  403. and therefore follow along

  404. with the masses,

  405. they will not enter

  406. the kingdom of heaven.

  407. That brings me to the final contrast

  408. in Jesus' analogy,

  409. the fourth difference.

  410. The two choices differ

  411. in their final destination.

  412. This is the reason

  413. that Jesus commands us

  414. to enter by the narrow gate.

  415. For, he says,

  416. this is the reason he gives,

  417. for the gate is wide

  418. and the way is easy

  419. that leads to destruction.

  420. For the gate is narrow

  421. and the way is hard

  422. that leads to life.

  423. Jesus is here speaking

  424. of eternal destruction

  425. and eternal life

  426. as we can see

  427. in the following verses.

  428. These two stark choices

  429. that Jesus offers us,

  430. there's no way around them.

  431. These are not two ways

  432. that take different routes

  433. to get to the same destination.

  434. No, they inevitably,

  435. unavoidably lead

  436. to two very different destinations,

  437. either to eternal life

  438. or to eternal destruction.

  439. There is no third way

  440. on this spiritual pilgrimage.

  441. We are either on the way to hell

  442. or on the way to heaven.

  443. We are either with Christ

  444. or against him.

  445. Indecision is a decision

  446. because if you do not heed

  447. Jesus' command

  448. to enter by the narrow gate,

  449. you are already at the wide gate

  450. and the broad way

  451. that leads to destruction.

  452. It's keeping in view

  453. this ultimate destination

  454. that enables us to persevere

  455. in the hard and narrow way

  456. when it's frankly hard.

  457. The people of this world

  458. might on the surface

  459. look like they're really

  460. enjoying themselves

  461. on that broad way

  462. and the easy way.

  463. Maybe they are doing cartwheels

  464. and somersaults

  465. along that 10-lane highway path.

  466. They don't have to fight greed.

  467. They can acquire and acquire

  468. and acquire and get as much

  469. as you want

  470. and spend on everything

  471. that you want,

  472. that you want on luxuries

  473. and the finer things in life.

  474. They don't have to worry

  475. about chastity or purity.

  476. They can sleep around

  477. with as many partners

  478. as they want,

  479. have sex with whoever

  480. they want.

  481. They can drink,

  482. they can gamble,

  483. they can wield great power

  484. and abuse it

  485. and by getting that power

  486. and exercising authority

  487. they could earn

  488. the praises

  489. and the admirations

  490. of the people of this world.

  491. But in the end,

  492. where does it lead?

  493. It leads to death,

  494. to destruction,

  495. to eternal damnation.

  496. in contrast,

  497. we who are on the hard

  498. and narrow way,

  499. we are wasting away outwardly,

  500. being persecuted,

  501. reviled.

  502. But it says,

  503. in 2 Corinthians 4,

  504. 16-18,

  505. we are being inwardly,

  506. we are being renewed

  507. day by day

  508. for this light,

  509. momentary affliction

  510. is preparing for us

  511. an eternal weight of glory

  512. beyond all comparison

  513. as we look not to the things

  514. that are seen

  515. but to the things

  516. that are unseen

  517. for the things that are seen

  518. are transient

  519. but things that are unseen

  520. are eternal.

  521. That's the first vignette

  522. or the image

  523. that the metaphor Jesus shares.

  524. The second type of people

  525. that Jesus mentions

  526. in verse 15-20

  527. are the imposters.

  528. So not all who are

  529. on the broad way

  530. are aware

  531. that they are non-Christians.

  532. So these people

  533. are those who

  534. pretend to be Christians.

  535. Verse 15 says,

  536. Beware of false prophets

  537. who come to you

  538. in sheep's clothing

  539. but inwardly

  540. are ravenous wolves.

  541. These people look like sheep.

  542. They come in sheep's clothing.

  543. They know how to pass

  544. as Christians.

  545. They know Christian jargon.

  546. They know the Christian subculture.

  547. They can quote scripture

  548. and appear pious and godly.

  549. They are invariably

  550. quite nice

  551. and they are winsome

  552. and persuasive

  553. as charlatans tend to be.

  554. They may for this reason

  555. even be widely respected

  556. within the church

  557. and among Christians

  558. as leaders

  559. and as prophets of the Lord.

  560. And it's precisely

  561. because of their deceptive powers

  562. that Jesus warns us,

  563. Beware of false prophets.

  564. But how then

  565. can we tell these impostors

  566. apart from true Christians?

  567. Jesus tells us

  568. in verses 16 to 20,

  569. You will recognize them

  570. by their fruits.

  571. Our grapes gather

  572. from thorn bushes

  573. or figs from thistles.

  574. So every healthy tree

  575. bears good fruit

  576. but the diseased tree

  577. bears bad fruit.

  578. A healthy tree

  579. cannot bear bad fruit

  580. nor can a diseased tree

  581. bear good fruit.

  582. Every tree

  583. that does not bear good fruit

  584. is cut down

  585. and thrown into the fire.

  586. Thus you will recognize them

  587. by their fruits.

  588. Twice Jesus says

  589. you will recognize them

  590. by their fruits.

  591. The main point

  592. of this metaphor

  593. is pretty straightforward, right?

  594. Most of us

  595. live in the city.

  596. I mean,

  597. we're all here in Boston

  598. and maybe we don't know

  599. trees very well

  600. and shrubs very well.

  601. It might be

  602. only a few of us

  603. probably can look

  604. at trees and bushes

  605. and recognize them

  606. by their leaves

  607. and trunks

  608. and branches.

  609. You know,

  610. but all of us

  611. no matter how dull

  612. we are

  613. can recognize trees

  614. by their fruit, right?

  615. When there's an apple

  616. on a tree,

  617. that's an apple tree.

  618. When there's blueberries

  619. on a bush,

  620. that's a blueberry bush.

  621. Likewise,

  622. we know how to tell

  623. a diseased tree

  624. or a healthy tree

  625. by looking at their fruit.

  626. If a vine

  627. produces juicy

  628. and plump

  629. and sweet grapes,

  630. then we know,

  631. oh,

  632. this is a healthy vine.

  633. But if a vine

  634. produces this

  635. shriveled up

  636. and sour grapes,

  637. then you know

  638. that there's something

  639. wrong with the vine.

  640. It's a diseased tree.

  641. But when it comes

  642. to applying

  643. this self-evident principle

  644. to people,

  645. what exactly

  646. are the fruits

  647. that we're looking for?

  648. Remember that

  649. in Matthew 7,

  650. 7 to 27,

  651. here in this

  652. large passage,

  653. there is an emphasis

  654. on doing the will

  655. of the Father

  656. in heaven.

  657. Are these

  658. so-called prophets

  659. doing the will

  660. of the Father

  661. in heaven?

  662. Are they doing

  663. to others

  664. what they wish

  665. they would do

  666. to them?

  667. In Jeremiah,

  668. the Lord God

  669. condemns

  670. the false prophets

  671. who are committing adultery,

  672. who are strengthening

  673. the hands of the wicked

  674. so that there is

  675. no justice

  676. in the land.

  677. Definitely one of the things

  678. in view here

  679. are false prophets

  680. who live falsely,

  681. who undo

  682. the word of God

  683. by the works

  684. that they do.

  685. That's one aspect of it.

  686. However,

  687. I think there is

  688. a situation

  689. that is even more

  690. prominently

  691. in Jesus' mind

  692. when he warns

  693. of false prophets here.

  694. Because what prophets

  695. are primarily known for

  696. are not their works,

  697. but their words.

  698. what they say,

  699. and they are called

  700. false prophets

  701. when they prophesy

  702. falsely,

  703. a message that God

  704. has not given them,

  705. but they relay it

  706. as a message

  707. of the Lord.

  708. And whenever Jesus

  709. uses the example

  710. of the metaphor

  711. of trees

  712. and their fruits,

  713. he seems to emphasize

  714. the fruit of our lips,

  715. what we say,

  716. our speech.

  717. You can see this

  718. in multiple places

  719. in the gospel.

  720. If you go to

  721. Matthew chapter 12,

    Matthew 12:33–37

  722. verse 33 to 37,

  723. Jesus says,

  724. either make the tree good

  725. and its fruit good,

  726. or make the tree bad

  727. and its fruit bad.

  728. For the tree

  729. is known by its fruit.

  730. You brood of vipers,

  731. how can you speak good

  732. when you are evil?

  733. For out of the abundance

  734. of the heart

  735. the mouth speaks.

  736. The good person

  737. out of his good treasure

  738. brings forth good,

  739. and the evil person

  740. out of his evil treasure

  741. brings forth evil.

  742. I tell you,

  743. on the day of judgment,

  744. people will give account

  745. for every careless word

  746. they speak.

  747. For by your words,

  748. you will be justified,

  749. and by your words,

  750. you will be condemned.

  751. Similarly,

  752. in Luke chapter 6,

    Luke 6:43–45

  753. verse 43 to 45,

  754. Jesus says,

  755. for no good tree

  756. bears bad fruit,

  757. nor again does a bad tree

  758. bear good fruit.

  759. For each tree

  760. is known by its own fruit.

  761. For figs are not gathered

  762. from thorn bushes,

  763. nor are graves picked

  764. from a bramble bush.

  765. The good person

  766. out of the good treasure

  767. of his heart

  768. produces good,

  769. and the evil person

  770. out of his evil treasure

  771. produces evil.

  772. For out of the abundance

  773. of the heart,

  774. his mouth speaks.

  775. Again,

  776. whenever Jesus uses metaphor,

  777. he seems to focus

  778. on our speech

  779. and the things

  780. that we say

  781. and the things

  782. that we teach.

  783. Earlier in Matthew 5,

  784. 17 to 20,

  785. when he was speaking

  786. about how he came

  787. to fulfill the law

  788. and the prophets,

  789. he said,

  790. not only those

  791. who relax the least

  792. of these commandments,

  793. but also those

  794. who teach others

  795. to do the same,

  796. those who teach others

  797. to relax God's commands,

  798. teach others

  799. to break his commands,

  800. will be held accountable

  801. to God.

  802. I think that's primarily

  803. what God has in view here.

  804. I refer you again

  805. to the image

  806. of the false prophet,

  807. the second beast,

  808. in Revelation chapter 19,

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  809. or chapter 12, 11, sorry,

  810. where this false prophet,

  811. the second beast,

  812. is described

  813. as looking like a lamb

  814. but speaking like a dragon.

  815. That's how you recognize

  816. a false prophet,

  817. by their speech.

  818. In what ways

  819. do they reveal

  820. that they are false prophets

  821. by what they say?

  822. It's the same thing

  823. that false prophets

  824. have always said.

  825. In Jeremiah 6, verse 14,

    Jeremiah 6:14

  826. God denounces

  827. these false prophets

  828. saying,

  829. they have healed

  830. the wound of my people

  831. lightly,

  832. saying,

  833. peace, peace,

  834. when there is no peace.

  835. Jeremiah was prophesying

  836. sword and famine

  837. to the people of Israel

  838. because of their idolatry

  839. and their adultery,

  840. spiritual adultery

  841. and unfaithfulness to God.

  842. Sword is coming,

  843. war is coming,

  844. famine is coming,

  845. but then there was

  846. this whole host

  847. of false prophets

  848. who were telling

  849. the Israelites,

  850. oh, don't worry,

  851. peace, peace,

  852. you will have peace.

  853. And God denounces them

  854. for saying,

  855. peace, peace,

  856. when there is no peace,

  857. healing the wounds

  858. of my people lightly.

  859. They were promising

  860. these sinners

  861. cheap grace,

  862. peace without repentance.

  863. They were dismissing Jeremiah,

  864. saying,

  865. well, Jeremiah,

  866. you know him.

  867. He's always a Debbie Downer.

  868. He's always been.

  869. He's harsh,

  870. narrow-minded,

  871. a theological snob,

  872. a legalistic Pharisee.

  873. Don't listen to him.

  874. He understands nothing

  875. of the wideness

  876. of God's grace,

  877. the broadness

  878. of God's love.

  879. God's love.

  880. In other words,

  881. these false prophets

  882. preached a gospel

  883. without a narrow gate

  884. and a hard road.

  885. they preached pleasant

  886. and unoffensive messages

  887. that appealed

  888. to the sinful natural man.

  889. When pressed,

  890. these false prophets

  891. might concede

  892. that sin is real,

  893. but they certainly

  894. don't like to talk about it.

  895. They make light of sin.

  896. They heal the wounds

  897. of the people lightly,

  898. putting a little band-aid

  899. on skin cancer,

  900. prescribing some antacids

  901. for someone

  902. who's experiencing

  903. heart failure,

  904. saying peace, peace

  905. when there is no peace.

  906. D. Martyn L. Jones

  907. concurs.

  908. He says,

  909. the false prophet

  910. very rarely tells you

  911. anything about

  912. the holiness,

  913. the righteousness,

  914. the justice,

  915. and the wrath of God.

  916. He generally emphasizes

  917. one truth about God only,

  918. and that is love.

  919. He does not mention

  920. the other truths

  921. that are equally prominent

  922. in the scriptures,

  923. and that is where

  924. the danger lies.

  925. I believe such false prophets

  926. and false teachers

  927. are even more dangerous

  928. than the overt opponents

  929. and persecutors

  930. of the church,

  931. because when you have

  932. these persecutors

  933. of the church

  934. from without,

  935. it's obvious

  936. that they are there,

  937. and we can prepare ourselves

  938. and defend ourselves,

  939. but with the wolves

  940. in sheep's clothing,

  941. it's harder to recognize them,

  942. and they destroy the church

  943. from within

  944. and ravage the people of God,

  945. the sheep of God's pasture.

  946. But the imposters

  947. will all one day

  948. be exposed by God,

  949. and it says,

  950. every tree that does not

  951. bear good fruit

  952. will be cut down

  953. and thrown into the fire.

  954. So that's the second kind

  955. of people.

  956. The third kind of people

  957. Jesus warns us about here

  958. are the hypocrites,

  959. the deluded.

  960. Jesus is bringing

  961. this comparison

  962. even closer to home.

  963. There are people

  964. who are really convinced

  965. that they belong

  966. in the kingdom of heaven,

  967. but in fact,

  968. they don't.

  969. Jesus says in verse 21,

  970. not everyone who says to me,

  971. Lord, Lord,

  972. will enter the kingdom

  973. of heaven,

  974. but the one who does

  975. the will of my Father

  976. who is in heaven.

  977. Jesus is speaking

  978. of those who confess

  979. him as Lord,

  980. which we are supposed

  981. to do that.

  982. He's not saying,

  983. don't worry about

  984. confessing Jesus is Lord.

  985. He says,

  986. not everyone who confesses

  987. Lord, Lord,

  988. will enter the kingdom

  989. of heaven,

  990. but no one who does

  991. not confesses

  992. Jesus is Lord

  993. will enter the kingdom

  994. of heaven.

  995. That's true too.

  996. So we are supposed

  997. to confess him,

  998. but that confession

  999. itself isn't enough.

  1000. What does it say

  1001. in Romans 10?

  1002. You must confess

  1003. with your mouth

  1004. that Jesus is Lord

  1005. and you must believe

  1006. in your heart

  1007. that God has raised

  1008. him from the dead.

  1009. These people don't

  1010. actually fully trust him,

  1011. believe in Jesus.

  1012. They don't have

  1013. a personal relationship

  1014. with Jesus.

1015. So Jesus says of them,

  1016. I never knew you

  1017. in verse 23.

  1018. They are the hypocrites

  1019. that Jesus announces

  1020. in Matthew 15 verse 8

    Matthew 15:8

  1021. who honor God

  1022. with their lips

  1023. while their hearts

  1024. are far from him.

  1025. James 2 also speaks

  1026. of such people,

  1027. the people who claim

  1028. to have faith

1029. but who had no good works

  1030. to accompany

  1031. their so-called faith.

  1032. James 2 19 says,

  1033. you believe that God

  1034. is one,

  1035. you do well.

  1036. Even the demons

  1037. believe and shudder.

  1038. A mere cognitive belief,

  1039. intellectual assent

  1040. that God exists

1041. and that he is one

  1042. is insufficient.

  1043. That kind of faith,

  1044. even demons have it.

1045. They believe that God exists.

  1046. Later in Matthew 8 verse 29,

    Matthew 8:29

1047. the demons will address Jesus

1048. as, oh son of God.

  1049. But do these demons

  1050. have saving faith?

  1051. Of course not.

  1052. That is,

  1053. that confession,

  1054. oh son of God

  1055. from the demons

  1056. is light years apart

  1057. from the confession

  1058. of Peter later on

  1059. in Matthew

  1060. when he says,

  1061. you are the Christ,

1062. the son of the living God.

  1063. a mere acknowledgement

  1064. of Lord,

  1065. Lord confessing him

  1066. is insufficient.

  1067. It's those who do

1068. the will of the Father

  1069. in heaven

  1070. who will enter

  1071. the kingdom of heaven.

1072. But here's the sobering reality

  1073. and the reason why

  1074. this passage

  1075. has troubled the conscience

  1076. of many people

  1077. throughout history.

  1078. These hypocrites

  1079. are genuinely deluded.

  1080. they think

  1081. that they did

1082. do the will of God

  1083. in heaven.

1084. On the day of judgment

1085. they will say to Jesus,

  1086. Lord, Lord,

  1087. did we not

  1088. prophesy in your name

  1089. and cast out demons

  1090. in your name

  1091. and do

  1092. many mighty deeds

  1093. in your name?

  1094. And there's no indication

  1095. in the text

  1096. that they're lying

  1097. or that they're being

  1098. misleading,

  1099. making misleading

  1100. grandiose claims.

  1101. No,

  1102. they sincerely believe

  1103. that they prophesied

  1104. and cast out demons

  1105. and that they did

  1106. mighty wonders.

  1107. Prophecy is a gift

  1108. of the Holy Spirit

  1109. as Ed mentioned earlier

  1110. in the service.

  1111. It's the gift

  1112. that God gives

  1113. to enable people

  1114. to receive messages

  1115. from God

  1116. and relay them

  1117. to others

  1118. to build up

  1119. the church of Christ.

  1120. However,

  1121. spiritual gifts

  1122. are natural gifts

  1123. sanctified,

  1124. consecrated

  1125. by the Holy Spirit.

  1126. So,

  1127. if I could use

  1128. some examples,

  1129. a university professor

  1130. who is very gifted

  1131. in teaching

  1132. might be converted

  1133. to Christianity

  1134. and now he has

  1135. a consecrated gift

  1136. of teaching

  1137. to build up

  1138. the church of Christ

  1139. through preaching,

  1140. perhaps.

  1141. Or,

  1142. there might be

  1143. a woman

  1144. who seems

  1145. to have

  1146. premonitions.

  1147. Even from a childhood,

  1148. she received visions

  1149. and has dreams.

  1150. when she's converted,

  1151. now those dreams

  1152. and visions

  1153. are also converted

  1154. in a sense.

  1155. They are sanctified

  1156. and consecrated

  1157. for the purposes

  1158. of God

  1159. and they use it

1160. as a gift of prophecy

1161. to build up the church.

  1162. The reason why

  1163. I mentioned

  1164. these examples

  1165. is to show

  1166. that a person

  1167. can prophesy

  1168. without being

  1169. a genuine Christian.

  1170. Perhaps the most

  1171. famous example

  1172. is Balaam

  1173. in Numbers 22-24.

  1174. The Lord

  1175. enables this

  1176. pagan seer

  1177. to prophesy

  1178. with striking

  1179. accuracy

  1180. and specificity

  1181. of the future.

  1182. And yet,

  1183. the Bible's

  1184. assessment of Balaam

  1185. is not good.

  1186. 2 Peter 2-15

  1187. describes him

  1188. as someone

  1189. who loved

  1190. gain from wrongdoing.

  1191. Revelation 2-14,

  1192. Jesus himself

  1193. condemns those

  1194. in the church

  1195. of Pergamum

  1196. who hold

  1197. the teaching

  1198. of Balaam.

  1199. And Jesus

  1200. rejects Balaam

  1201. as someone

  1202. who put

  1203. a stumbling block

  1204. before the sons

  1205. of Israel

  1206. so that they

  1207. might eat food,

  1208. sacrifice to idols,

  1209. and practice

  1210. sexual immorality.

  1211. So it is possible

  1212. for unsaved,

  1213. unregenerate people

  1214. to do these kinds

  1215. of impressive deeds.

  1216. Not only that,

  1217. these people

  1218. have cast out demons.

  1219. In Matthew 12,

  1220. 22-32,

  1221. when Jesus himself

  1222. casts out a demon,

  1223. the envious Pharisees

  1224. accuse him

  1225. of casting out demons

  1226. by the power

  1227. of the prince

  1228. of demons,

  1229. Beelzebul.

  1230. And Jesus

  1231. asks them

  1232. a question

  1233. to challenge them.

  1234. He says,

1235. if I cast out demons

  1236. by Beelzebul,

  1237. by whom do

  1238. your sons

  1239. cast out demons?

  1240. Therefore,

  1241. they will be

  1242. your judges.

  1243. In other words,

  1244. Jesus is saying,

  1245. well,

  1246. why don't you go

  1247. ask your own

  1248. Jewish sons

  1249. who go around

  1250. and casting out demons

  1251. and see if they

  1252. can cast out demons

  1253. by demons

  1254. because that doesn't

  1255. make any sense.

  1256. Jesus is here

  1257. admitting that

  1258. there were

  1259. Jewish exorcists

  1260. who were casting

  1261. out demons.

  1262. That's what you see

  1263. in Acts 19,

  1264. 13-16,

  1265. the sons of Sceva.

  1266. It's not as effective

  1267. as the Christians

  1268. who are indwelled

1269. by the Spirit of God

  1270. and have the authority

  1271. of Christ behind them.

  1272. But nevertheless,

  1273. it can happen

  1274. in a limited way,

  1275. in some way.

  1276. And of course,

  1277. we see in Revelation

  1278. the false prophet,

  1279. the second beast

  1280. being empowered

  1281. by the devil

  1282. to do similar things,

  1283. although it's not

1284. casting out their own demons.

  1285. They do other wonders

  1286. and signs.

1287. This is still not all.

  1288. These people say

  1289. in verse 22,

  1290. did we not do

  1291. many mighty works

  1292. in your name?

  1293. That word do

1294. is again the key word

  1295. that recurs

  1296. throughout this passage.

  1297. They're claiming

  1298. to have done

  1299. what Jesus says

  1300. that we must do

  1301. to do the will

1302. of the Father in heaven.

  1303. We did it, Lord.

1304. We were not hearers only,

  1305. we were doers.

  1306. Nevertheless,

  1307. Jesus declares,

  1308. I never knew you.

  1309. Depart from me,

  1310. you workers

  1311. of lawlessness.

  1312. Jesus is not saying

  1313. that he has never

  1314. heard of them.

  1315. Jesus is the omniscient,

  1316. risen,

  1317. and ascended Lord

  1318. and judge

  1319. of all the earth

  1320. in this scene.

  1321. He's speaking

  1322. rather of personal

  1323. relationship.

  1324. He's speaking

  1325. of election.

  1326. in the same way

  1327. God speaks of it

  1328. in Amos chapter 3,

    Amos 3:2

  1329. verse 2,

1330. referring to his people Israel.

1331. You only have I known

  1332. among all the families

  1333. of the earth.

  1334. That doesn't mean

  1335. that God doesn't know

1336. about any of the other

  1337. families and peoples

  1338. in the world.

  1339. It means that

1340. you only have I chosen

  1341. as my people,

  1342. my own special possession.

1343. That's what Jesus is saying.

  1344. I never knew you.

  1345. He means you never

  1346. belonged to me.

  1347. You were never

  1348. one of my people.

1349. But how can that be

  1350. when these people

  1351. prophesied

  1352. and cast out demons

1353. and did many mighty works

  1354. in Jesus' name?

1355. Notice that Jesus calls them

  1356. workers of lawlessness.

  1357. They were hypocrites.

  1358. They did many

  1359. public impressive works

  1360. that were ostensibly

  1361. for God,

  1362. but they weren't really

  1363. doing it for him.

  1364. Because in other,

  1365. perhaps less visible

  1366. areas of their life,

  1367. they were workers

  1368. of lawlessness.

  1369. This reminds me

  1370. of Deuteronomy 13,

  1371. 1 to 5,

  1372. where there's warnings

  1373. against false prophets.

  1374. He says,

  1375. If a prophet

  1376. or a dreamer

  1377. of dreams

  1378. rises among you

  1379. and gives you

  1380. a sign or a wonder,

1381. and the sign or wonder

  1382. that he tells you

  1383. comes to pass,

  1384. and if he says,

  1385. Let us go after

  1386. other gods

1387. which you have not known

1388. and let us serve them,

  1389. you shall not listen

  1390. to the words

  1391. of that prophet

  1392. or that dreamer

  1393. of dreams.

1394. For the Lord your God

  1395. is testing you

  1396. to know whether you

1397. love the Lord your God

  1398. with all your heart

1399. and with all your soul.

  1400. You shall walk

1401. after the Lord your God

  1402. and fear him

  1403. and keep his commandments

  1404. and obey his voice

1405. and you shall serve him

1406. and hold fast to him.

1407. even if what this false

  1408. prophets say is true,

  1409. even if they do

  1410. signs and wonders,

  1411. if they then say,

  1412. Let's turn away

  1413. from the Lord,

  1414. that's a false prophet.

  1415. I think that's what

  1416. these self-deceived,

  1417. deluded people

  1418. were doing.

  1419. The obedience

  1420. that Jesus demands here

  1421. is not just

  1422. external acts.

1423. Jesus is after our hearts.

1424. Not just what we do,

  1425. but why we do

  1426. these things.

1427. When you do your acts

  1428. of devotion

  1429. and service

  1430. and righteousness,

1431. do you do those works

  1432. out of your personal

  1433. relationship with Jesus?

  1434. Are they expressions

  1435. of your wholehearted

  1436. love for him?

  1437. Maybe you love

  1438. debating theology

  1439. and the finer points

  1440. of theology.

  1441. You love charts

  1442. and cross-references

  1443. and you're greatly

  1444. stimulated by dissecting

  1445. the word of God.

  1446. But maybe you're not

  1447. a lover of Jesus.

  1448. You're a lover of logic

  1449. and argumentation

  1450. and literary analysis.

  1451. Maybe you love apologetics.

  1452. You love to engage

  1453. unbelievers with

  1454. the cosmological argument

  1455. or talk to them

  1456. about the credibility

  1457. and the reliability

  1458. and the historicity

  1459. of the scriptures.

  1460. But maybe more

  1461. than loving Jesus,

  1462. you love your intellect

  1463. and showcasing it

  1464. to others.

  1465. I'm not saying

  1466. that these activities

1467. are bad in and of themselves.

  1468. They're good things

  1469. and we should do.

  1470. You should study theology.

  1471. You should learn apologetics,

1472. but I'm trying to show you

1473. how they can all go wrong

  1474. if our heart's not

  1475. in the right place.

1476. Maybe you love to talk

  1477. about your devotional practices,

  1478. how much scripture

  1479. you've read

  1480. or memorized,

  1481. how much you've journaled,

1482. how much you love God.

  1483. You're always trying

  1484. to produce tears

  1485. when you're talking

  1486. about God.

1487. You want people to know

  1488. how genuine you are.

1489. But what if your zeal

  1490. is misguided

1491. and more than loving Jesus,

1492. you love to show people

1493. how much you love Jesus.

  1494. What if you're a pastor

  1495. or a missionary

1496. and you have given your life

1497. to building up the church?

  1498. You've worked yourself

  1499. haggard,

  1500. but in the end,

1501. you're doing it for yourself.

  1502. You're gaining followers

  1503. after yourself.

  1504. What if ministry

  1505. was not a context

1506. for loving and serving Jesus,

1507. but was actually a pretext

1508. for making much of yourself?

  1509. What if Jesus said

1510. you could never preach again?

1511. Would you still read your Bible?

  1512. What if Jesus said

  1513. that you could never

  1514. be a missionary?

  1515. Would you still evangelize

  1516. the lost around you?

  1517. What is so alarming

  1518. about this passage

  1519. is that Jesus says

  1520. in verse 22,

  1521. on that day,

1522. many will say to me,

  1523. Lord, Lord,

1524. but then I will declare

1525. to them I never knew you.

  1526. The word many here

  1527. matches the many

1528. who enter the wide gate

  1529. and the broad way

  1530. that leads to destruction.

  1531. It's not few

  1532. who are self-deceived.

  1533. It's many

  1534. who are self-deceived.

  1535. And this reality

1536. should make all of us

  1537. examine ourselves

1538. for all that we are doing

  1539. to serve the Lord.

1540. Do we have a personal

  1541. relationship with Jesus?

  1542. If all your titles

  1543. and positions

  1544. and reputations

  1545. and ministries

  1546. were stripped from you,

1547. would you still love God

1548. with all of your heart?

  1549. The final vignette

  1550. in verses 24 to 27

  1551. summarizes this whole passage

1552. and brings it to a close.

  1553. Everyone who then

1554. hears these words of mine

  1555. and does them

1556. will be like a wise man

  1557. who built his house

  1558. on the rock.

  1559. And the rain fell

  1560. and the floods came

  1561. and the winds blew

1562. and beat on that house.

1563. But it did not fall

  1564. because it had been

  1565. founded on the rock.

  1566. And everyone who hears

  1567. these words of mine

1568. and does not do them

1569. will be like a foolish man

  1570. who built his house

  1571. on the sand.

  1572. And the rain fell

  1573. and the floods came

  1574. and the winds blew

1575. and beat against that house

  1576. and it fell

1577. and great was the fall of it.

  1578. This is a particularly

  1579. hard-hitting passage

1580. in light of the recent

  1581. flash floods

  1582. along the Guadalupe River

  1583. in Texas.

1584. Maybe some of you guys

  1585. have seen videos,

  1586. literal houses

  1587. floating down the river

  1588. that's swelling up,

  1589. destroying people's lives.

  1590. This also happened

  1591. in this arid area,

  1592. part of the world

1593. that Jesus is preaching in

  1594. and Jesus is warning

  1595. against that.

  1596. And notice that

  1597. the two builders,

  1598. they build houses

  1599. that probably look

  1600. very much the same.

  1601. There's no indication

  1602. that they're radically

  1603. different houses.

  1604. They look the same

  1605. on the surface.

1606. This is what I call

  1607. the dabblers,

  1608. the dilettantes,

  1609. the people who

1610. go in and out of church,

  1611. people who've heard sermons

1612. and know how to say

  1613. Christian things,

  1614. people who give

  1615. the appearance

  1616. that they are Christians.

  1617. Yet, fundamentally,

  1618. there's something amiss

  1619. because they did not

  1620. build their house

  1621. on the rock.

  1622. They did not build

  1623. their house

  1624. on submission to Christ

  1625. and obedience

  1626. to his commands.

  1627. Rather, they started

  1628. without the foundation

  1629. and built to show

  1630. what appears

  1631. to other people

  1632. to be a house.

  1633. instead of starting

  1634. with humbling oneself

  1635. before God

  1636. and before Jesus.

1637. I do want you all

  1638. to hear these things

  1639. and examine yourselves

  1640. as I did,

  1641. but I also don't want you

  1642. to go back home

  1643. with despair

1644. if you are a genuine

  1645. follower of Christ,

  1646. which I suspect

  1647. most of you are.

  1648. I was reading

  1649. a chapter

  1650. in the sermon,

  1651. Studies in the Sermon

  1652. on the Mount

  1653. by D. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  1654. on this chapter,

  1655. and he was

  1656. mentioning a preacher

  1657. named Robert Murray

  1658. McShane,

  1659. and he said

  1660. that this preacher

  1661. walked so intimately

  1662. and personally

  1663. with God

  1664. and was so full

  1665. of the Spirit

  1666. that people

  1667. who in the audience

  1668. who heard him preach

1669. said that when he came

1670. to preach at the pulpit

  1671. that people would start

  1672. weeping right away

  1673. because they sensed

  1674. that this man

  1675. came straight

  1676. from an audience

  1677. with the living God.

  1678. And I read that

  1679. and I wept.

  1680. And I wept.

  1681. If I could be

  1682. a preacher like that.

  1683. How many times

  1684. when I should have

  1685. shut my mouth,

  1686. blabbered

  1687. to make myself

  1688. look good

  1689. instead of trying

  1690. to make Christ

  1691. look good.

  1692. If you are being

  1693. convicted

  1694. by the sermon,

  1695. I want to

  1696. leave you

  1697. with this

  1698. hope

  1699. because as Jesus

  1700. goes through

  1701. the sermon,

  1702. he makes an interesting

  1703. and suggestive

  1704. shift.

  1705. He says

  1706. in verses

  1707. 21 to 23,

  1708. not everyone

  1709. who says to me,

  1710. Lord, Lord,

  1711. will enter

  1712. the kingdom of heaven.

  1713. Notice he said,

  1714. not everyone

  1715. who says to me,

  1716. not everyone

  1717. who says to God,

  1718. not the Father.

1719. This is the first time

  1720. in Matthew

  1721. when Jesus calls

  1722. himself Lord.

  1723. The Lord,

  1724. Lord.

  1725. And then

  1726. look at verse 24

  1727. when he says,

  1728. everyone then

  1729. who hears

  1730. these words

  1731. of mine

  1732. and does them

  1733. will be

  1734. like wise men

  1735. who built his house

  1736. on the rock.

  1737. He doesn't say here

  1738. everyone who does

1739. the words of the Father,

1740. the will of the Father

  1741. as he said

  1742. in the previous passage.

  1743. No, he says

  1744. these words of mine.

  1745. Jesus is putting

  1746. himself in

  1747. the very place

  1748. of the living God

  1749. because he is

  1750. the son of God.

  1751. And he's doing this

  1752. because he knows

  1753. what he's going

  1754. to accomplish

  1755. on the behalf

  1756. of his people

1757. by going to the cross

1758. and dying for the sins

  1759. of people

  1760. to save them

1761. and to make a way

  1762. for them

1763. to go to the kingdom

  1764. of heaven.

  1765. And that's what

  1766. we read about

  1767. in John 10

  1768. that Ed mentioned

  1769. in the assurance

  1770. of pardon

  1771. in our service.

  1772. What is

  1773. the narrow gate

  1774. that leads

  1775. to the kingdom

  1776. of heaven?

  1777. Jesus says

  1778. in John 10

    John 10:7

  1779. verse 7

  1780. truly truly

  1781. I say to you

  1782. I am

  1783. the door

  1784. of the sheep.

  1785. And he says

  1786. I am

  1787. the good shepherd

  1788. I know my own

  1789. and my own

  1790. know me.

  1791. I laid out

  1792. my life

  1793. for the sheep.

  1794. That's what

  1795. Jesus did

  1796. for us.

  1797. He doesn't just

  1798. point to a way

  1799. and say

  1800. well that's a really

  1801. hard way

  1802. but you have

  1803. to make it.

  1804. You have to

  1805. get through there.

  1806. You have to

  1807. squeeze in somehow.

  1808. You need to

  1809. push a little harder.

  1810. No Jesus says

  1811. I am

  1812. the way.

  1813. In John 14

  1814. 6

  1815. I am

  1816. the way

  1817. the truth

  1818. and the life.

  1819. I am

  1820. the door.

  1821. Jesus says

  1822. in John 14

  1823. 6

  1824. John 15

  1825. 5

  1826. I am

  1827. the vine.

  1828. Whoever

  1829. abides in me

  1830. and I

  1831. in him

  1832. he it is

  1833. that bears

  1834. fruit.

  1835. 1 Corinthians

  1836. 10

  1837. tells us

  1838. Jesus

  1839. is

  1840. the rock.

  1841. 1 Corinthians

  1842. 3

  1843. says

  1844. that there

  1845. is no

  1846. other

  1847. foundation

  1848. upon

  1849. which

  1850. we

  1851. can

  1852. build

  1853. but

  1854. Jesus

  1855. Christ.

  1856. So

  1857. all these

  1858. things

  1859. if we

  1860. go back

  1861. from this

  1862. passage

  1863. and say

  1864. you know

  1865. what

  1866. I just

  1867. need to

  1868. kick

  1869. myself

  1870. a little

  1871. more

  1872. be a little

  1873. harder

  1874. on myself

  1875. and work

  1876. a little

  1877. hard

  1878. and push

  1879. harder

  1880. and do

  1881. it

  1882. do it

  1883. do it

  1884. and I'm

  1885. going to

  1886. make it

  1887. I promise

  1888. you

  1889. you will

  1890. not

  1891. make it.

  1892. It's

  1893. too hard.

  1894. The gate

  1895. is too

  1896. narrow.

  1897. The way

  1898. is too

  1899. hard.

  1900. You

  1901. will

  1902. not

  1903. make

  1904. it.

  1905. But if

  1906. you go

  1907. now

  1908. and hear

  1909. Jesus

  1910. say

  1911. I

  1912. am

  1913. the

  1914. door

  1915. I

  1916. am

  1917. the

  1918. way

  1919. I

  1920. am

  1921. the

  1922. tree

  1923. the

  1924. vine

  1925. in

  1926. which

  1927. you

  1928. can

  1929. derive

  1930. nourishment

  1931. from

  1932. I

  1933. am

  1934. the

  1935. rock

  1936. upon

  1937. you

  1938. should

  1939. build

  1940. it's

  1941. not

  1942. about

  1943. just

  1944. here's

  1945. what

  1946. you

  1947. need

  1948. to

  1949. do

  1950. here's

  1951. a

  1952. list

  1953. of

  1954. things

  1955. go

  1956. do

  1957. it

  1958. Jesus

  1959. says

  1960. no

  1961. I

  1962. am

  1963. the

  1964. way

  1965. come

  1966. to

  1967. me

  1968. come

  1969. to

  1970. me

  1971. and

  1972. believe

  1973. in

  1974. me

  1975. come

  1976. to

  1977. me

  1978. that

  1979. I

  1980. died

  1981. for you

  1982. on the

  1983. cross

  1984. for your

  1985. sins

  1986. and was

  1987. raised

  1988. from the

  1989. dead

  1990. so you

  1991. might

  1992. have

  1993. eternal

  1994. life

  1995. come

  1996. to

  1997. me

  1998. so you

  1999. might

  2000. be

  2001. one

  2002. with

  2003. me

  2004. so you

  2005. might

  2006. live

  2007. with

  2008. me

  2009. and have

  2010. fellowship

  2011. with

  2012. me

  2013. that I

  2014. might

  2015. come

  2016. and live

  2017. inside

  2018. you

  2019. and dwell

  2020. in

  2021. you

  2022. so

  2023. my

  2024. spirit

  2025. might

  2026. empower

  2027. you

  2028. that's

  2029. the

  2030. hope

  2031. of

  2032. the

  2033. gospel

  2034. so

  2035. let's

  2036. cling

  2037. to

  2038. that

  2039. together

  2040. let's

  2041. pray

  2042. yes

  2043. father

  2044. thank you

  2045. for sending

  2046. your only

  2047. son

  2048. Jesus

  2049. Christ

  2050. to

  2051. be

  2052. the

  2053. way

  2054. that

  2055. we

  2056. need

  2057. it

  2058. Lord

  2059. for

  2060. there

  2061. is

  2062. no

  2063. other

  2064. way

  2065. Lord

  2066. many

  2067. of us

  2068. in this

  2069. room

  2070. have

  2071. tried

  2072. we've

  2073. tried

  2074. these

  2075. other

  2076. ways

  2077. they

  2078. don't

  2079. work

  2080. they

  2081. don't

  2082. lead

  2083. us

  2084. to

  2085. you

  2086. they

  2087. don't

  2088. lead

  2089. us

  2090. to

  2091. the

  2092. kingdom

  2093. of

  2094. heaven

  2095. but

  2096. Lord

  2097. we

  2098. confess

  2099. and

  2100. we

  2101. worship

  2102. you

  2103. because

  2104. of

  2105. this

  2106. that

  2107. Jesus

  2108. is

  2109. the

  2110. way

  2111. the

  2112. truth

  2113. and

  2114. the

  2115. life

  2116. and

  2117. because

  2118. of

  2119. him

  2120. we

  2121. have

  2122. a

  2123. pathway

  2124. to

  2125. you

  2126. we

  2127. have

  2128. been

  2129. reconciled

  2130. to

  2131. you

  2132. Lord

  2133. help

  2134. us

  2135. to

  2136. cling

  2137. to

  2138. this

  2139. truth

  2140. so

  2141. that

  2142. we

  2143. might

  2144. be

  2145. able

  2146. to

  2147. persevere

  2148. till

  2149. the

  2150. very

  2151. end

  2152. in

  2153. Jesus

  2154. name

  2155. we

  2156. pray

  2157. amen
