  1. My name is Sean, for those of you who know me, and I'm one of the pastors of Trinity Cambridge Church.

  2. It's my joy and privilege to preach God's word to you this morning.

  3. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 9.

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  4. Matthew chapter 9 verses 27 to 34.

    Matthew 9:27–34

  5. We normally stand for the reading of God's word, but I'm just going to have you guys sit today.

  6. I will read for us Matthew chapter 9 verses 27 to 34.

    Matthew 9:27–34

  7. Let me pray.

  8. Father, open up your word to us.

  9. That we might see the glory, the authority, the compassion, and mercy of Jesus Christ our Savior.

  10. And through him that we might be reconciled to you, to love you, to worship you forever.

  11. Speak to us in your word. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  12. I'm going to read it out loud for us. Matthew chapter 9 verses 27 to 34.

    Matthew 9:27–34

  13. And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud,

  14. Have mercy on us, son of David.

  15. When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them,

  16. Do you believe that I am able to do this?

  17. They said to him, Yes, Lord.

  18. Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your faith, be it done to you.

  19. And their eyes were opened.

  20. And Jesus sternly warned them, See that no one knows about it.

  21. But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

  22. As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him.

  23. And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke.

  24. And the crowds marveled, saying, Never was anything like this seen in Israel.

  25. But the Pharisees said, He casts out demons by the prince of demons.

  26. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  27. When it comes to Christianity, many people have qualms and questions about this doctrine or that,

  28. this ethical requirement or that.

  29. But the central question of Christianity is, Who is Jesus?

  30. Because if Jesus is who he said he is,

  31. if he really is the Messiah whom God has sent,

  32. if he really is the Son of God,

  33. if he really is the atoning sacrifice, the Lamb of God,

  34. and if really Christianity is not a man-made religion,

  35. but the truth of God,

  36. then we are in no position to quibble about this or that.

  37. We must believe in Jesus and follow him,

  38. or else be found to be resisting God himself.

  39. After Jesus finished his first magisterial sermon,

  40. the Sermon on the Mount that we went through recently in Matthew chapters 5 to 7,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  41. he said in chapter 7, 28 to 29,

  42. The crowds were astonished at his teaching,

  43. for he was teaching them as one who had authority and not as their scribes.

  44. And then Matthew has been spending the next subsequent two chapters,

  45. chapters 8 and 9,

  46. to demonstrate to us that authority that Jesus had

  47. by recounting nine miracle stories in three groups of three.

  48. To show us the kind and the extent of authority that Jesus had over diseases,

  49. over natural disasters, over demons,

  50. and even over death itself.

  51. And we're at the very end of that section of Matthew,

  52. looking at the last two miracles that Jesus did in this section.

  53. Matthew's aim in retelling these stories is this,

  54. to show us that there is no one like Jesus,

  55. and we must believe in him.

  56. We're going to first talk about,

  57. it's a very simple message and a short message

  58. to accommodate our setting here.

  59. My two points are that just who Jesus is,

  60. and what we must do.

  61. That's going to be my outline for the morning.

  62. Let's first look at who Jesus is.

  63. Having just raised a ruler's daughter from the dead in the preceding passage,

  64. Jesus is now moving to a new location,

  65. when it says in verse 27,

  66. two blind men start following Jesus.

  67. They're crying aloud,

  68. have mercy on us, son of David.

  69. But Jesus doesn't heal the blind men right then and there in public,

  70. on the road.

  71. No, he says in verse 28,

  72. that when he entered the house,

  73. then the blind men came to him,

  74. and Jesus then starts interacting with them.

  75. We are not told whose house this is.

  76. There are times when Matthew specifies whose house Jesus was in.

  77. For example, we are told that Jesus entered Peter's house,

  78. in chapter 8, verse 14,

  79. that he was in the ruler's house in chapter 9, verse 23,

  80. and then he was in the house of Simon the leper in chapter 26, verse 6.

  81. But there are also several times in the gospel

  82. when we are told without any additional detail

  83. that he just simply entered the house.

  84. In such cases,

  85. it seems most likely that Matthew is referring to Jesus' family home,

  86. his parents' house in Capernaum.

  87. It's only after entering his house that Jesus addresses the blind men.

  88. Do you believe that I am able to do this?

  89. And they reply,

  90. Yes, Lord,

  91. in verse 28.

  92. It's easy to gloss over this,

  93. but this is quite the profession of faith.

  94. These blind men believe that Jesus can give them sight.

  95. Think of the people in your life

  96. that you have the greatest confidence and trust in.

  97. You trust them to get anything that you ask them to do done.

  98. They're very reliable, dependable people.

  99. You ask them for big things sometimes.

  100. You ask them to do things for planning your wedding.

  101. But imagine,

  102. would you trust them to open the eyes of the blind?

  103. You wouldn't.

  104. That would be a misplaced confidence.

  105. Because even with all the advances in modern medicine,

  106. most forms of blindness have no cure.

  107. Yet these two blind men reply in the affirmative,

  108. Yes, Lord.

  109. Yes, we believe that you can make us see.

  110. And it says in verses 29 to 30

  111. that Jesus touched their eyes and said,

  112. According to your faith be it done to you.

  113. And their eyes were opened.

  114. A simple touch,

  115. a simple word.

  116. And the two men who once were blind,

  117. now see.

  118. And that's meant to raise the question in our minds,

  119. what kind of man is this?

  120. Who is Jesus?

  121. How does he have such authority?

  122. And then we get to the last miracle story of this section.

  123. As Jesus and his disciples are leaving,

  124. a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him.

  125. Even though it's translated here as demon-oppressed,

  126. here as opposed to demon-possessed,

  127. as we saw in chapter 8, verse 28,

  128. the Greek word behind the two expressions are exactly the same.

  129. It means literally that they were demonized,

  130. meaning that they were under some kind of controlling influence of the demon.

  131. Demon has taken residence within this man.

  132. In the case of the gathering demoniacs in chapter 8 that we saw,

  133. the demon spoke through the man that they inhabited.

  134. But in this case, the demon makes the man mute,

  135. which shows us that the demons,

  136. the different kinds of demons who have different effects on their hosts.

  137. But Jesus' reaction in both cases is the same.

  138. It says in verse 23 that the demon had been cast out.

  139. Matthew is not at all interested in capturing the drama

  140. or the mechanics of exorcisms.

  141. He doesn't give us any detail about how it went down.

  142. He simply tells us that the demon was cast out by Jesus.

  143. He who has authority over demons can cast out demons.

  144. It's as simple as that.

  145. And that's Matthew's point.

  146. And Matthew's point is that Jesus has that authority,

  147. not only over the visible created world,

  148. the diseases, the natural disasters, and death,

  149. but also over the invisible created world,

  150. the realm of spirits, angels, and demons.

  151. The crowds understandably marvel in verse 33,

  152. and they say,

  153. never was anything like this seen in Israel.

  154. This is a remarkable statement for these Jews to make

  155. because there have been other exorcists in the history of Israel.

  156. In 1 Samuel 16, verse 23,

    1 Samuel 16:23

  157. when an evil spirit came upon King Saul and tormented him,

  158. David played the liar,

  159. and the spirit departed from him.

  160. But in that situation,

  161. the evil spirit always returned time and time again to torment Saul.

  162. The exorcism was not permanent in that situation.

  163. But Jesus casts out demons once and for all

  164. with the word of his mouth.

  165. That's the difference.

  166. There were also Old Testament prophets who raised the dead.

  167. You might recall Elijah,

  168. who raised the dead son of the widow of Zarephath in 1 Kings 17,

  169. but that was not an easy affair.

  170. It was quite an involved affair.

  171. He had to earnestly cry out to God in prayer,

  172. and then he had to lay himself out on top of the child three times

  173. before the child began consciousness and came back to life.

  174. Similarly, Elijah in 2 Kings 4,

  175. when he raised the Shimonite's son,

  176. he also had to put his staff on the child for a bit,

  177. which didn't work,

  178. and then he had to come and pray earnestly

  179. and lay himself out for probably maximal physical context

  180. and spiritual healing power.

  181. And that had to happen multiple times

  182. before the child regained life.

  183. But Jesus,

  184. when he raised the ruler's daughter in chapter 9, verse 25,

  185. simply took her by the hand,

  186. and the girl arose.

  187. Moreover,

  188. as Todd preached on a couple weeks ago,

  189. what manner of man ever claimed to forgive sins?

  190. Jesus did that to the paralytic in chapter 9, verse 2.

  191. And the Pharisees were understandably upset,

  192. and they objected to Jesus' claim,

  193. and they murmured among themselves,

  194. this man is blaspheming,

  195. for who can forgive sins but God alone?

  196. But Jesus claimed that unique divine authority for himself,

  197. and Jesus possessed that authority in himself.

  198. So the crowds marveled, saying,

  199. never was anything like this seen in Israel.

  200. Never before was there anyone like Jesus.

  201. And never again will there be someone like Jesus.

  202. Who then is this man?

  203. How does he have such authority?

  204. We're given several important hints in this passage.

  205. And first,

  206. is that Jesus is addressed by the two blind men in this story,

  207. in verse 27,

  208. as the son of David.

  209. Jesus was introduced to us with this title

  210. at the very beginning of Matthew's Gospel,

  211. chapter 1, verse 1,

  212. the book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,

  213. the son of David.

  214. David was the great king of Israel,

  215. to whom God had made this promise,

  216. in 2 Samuel 7, 12-14.

  217. I will raise up your offspring after you,

  218. who shall come from your body,

  219. and I will establish his kingdom.

  220. He shall build a house for my name,

  221. and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

  222. I will be to him a father,

  223. and he shall be to me a son.

  224. This prophecy was fulfilled in an immediate sense

  225. by King Solomon,

  226. who reigned after his father David,

  227. and built the temple of the Lord.

  228. But Solomon did not fulfill this prophecy

  229. in an ultimate sense,

  230. because the Davidic dynasty,

  231. along with the temple,

  232. came crumbling down at the Babylonian exile.

  233. But nonetheless,

  234. in Jeremiah 23, verses 14-17,

    Jeremiah 23:14–17

  235. God renewed his promise of a Davidic king,

  236. the Messiah,

  237. to his exiled people in Babylon.

  238. And he said,

  239. Behold,

  240. the days are coming,

  241. declares the Lord,

  242. when I will fulfill the promise

  243. I made to the house of Israel

  244. and the house of Judah.

  245. In those days and at that time,

  246. I will cause a righteous branch

  247. to spring up for David,

  248. and he shall execute justice

  249. and righteousness in the land.

  250. In those days,

  251. Judah will be saved,

  252. and Jerusalem will dwell securely.

  253. And this is the name

  254. by which it will be called,

  255. The Lord is our righteousness.

  256. For thus says the Lord,

  257. David shall never lack a man

  258. to sit on the throne

  259. of the house of Israel.

  260. That ancient promise

  261. is finally being fulfilled

  262. in Jesus the Christ,

  263. which means the anointed one,

  264. the prophesied king,

  265. the messianic king.

  266. And that's what it means

  267. that he is the son of David.

  268. The second clue is that Jesus

  269. is also addressed by the blind men

  270. in verse 28 as Lord.

  271. Skeptics of scripture

  272. are quick to point out

  273. that the word Lord

  274. in Greek can simply mean sir.

  275. It could simply mean

  276. a polite differential term

  277. in the same way

  278. people in the south

  279. call everybody that's every male

  280. that occupies a higher social station

  281. than them sir.

  282. And they explain that

  283. that's just what it means here.

  284. It just means sir.

  285. However, that doesn't go deep enough

  286. in its interpretation.

  287. Between Matthew chapters 1 to 6,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  288. only God is ever called Lord

  289. in all six of those early chapters.

  290. About 10 times.

  291. The first time that that word

  292. is applied to anyone

  293. other than God

  294. is in chapter 7,

  295. verse 21 to 23.

  296. When Jesus says,

  297. not everyone who says to me,

  298. Lord, Lord,

  299. will enter the kingdom of heaven.

  300. But the one who does the will

  301. of my father who is in heaven.

  302. On that day,

  303. many will say to me,

  304. Lord, Lord,

  305. did we not prophesy in your name

  306. and cast out demons in your name

  307. and do many mighty works

  308. in your name

  309. and then I will declare to them,

  310. I never knew you.

  311. Depart from me,

  312. you workers of lawlessness.

  313. So the first time

  314. that this title,

  315. Lord,

  316. is applied to anyone

  317. other than God,

  318. first time that Jesus

  319. applies this title

  320. to himself,

  321. he claims to be

  322. the cosmic end time

  323. judge and ruler

  324. of the universe.

  325. So once again,

  326. appropriating divine prerogatives

  327. for himself

  328. as he has done

  329. throughout the gospel.

  330. This is intentional.

  331. In Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3:3

  332. verse 3,

  333. Matthew quotes Isaiah 40,

    Isaiah 40:3

  334. verse 3,

  335. and says that

  336. John the Baptist

  337. is the one

  338. who fulfills the prophecy

  339. that someone would come

  340. who would prepare

  341. the way of the Lord.

  342. In the original context

  343. of Isaiah,

  344. that Lord is

  345. Lord in all caps.

  346. It's Yahweh.

  347. It's referring to God.

  348. And yet,

  349. when you read on

  350. in Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  351. he tells us that

  352. John the Baptist

  353. is preparing the way

  354. for Jesus.

  355. So again,

  356. Jesus is being equated

  357. to claiming

  358. divine lordship.

  359. Because Jesus is God.

  360. Because as he was,

  361. as God the Father

  362. declared at his baptism

  363. in Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  364. he is the beloved

  365. son of God.

  366. He raises the dead

  367. and casts out demons

  368. and forgives sin

  369. with the word of his mouth

  370. because he is God.

  371. It's no coincidence

  372. that the last two miracles

  373. of this section

  374. are of Jesus

  375. opening the eyes

  376. of the blind

  377. and opening the mouth

  378. of the mute

  379. because those two

  380. are signature miracles

  381. that only God can do

  382. and are characterized

  383. and are associated

  384. with the messianic age.

  385. In Exodus 4, 11,

  386. God says,

  387. who has made man's mouth?

  388. Who makes him mute

  389. or deaf

  390. or seeing

  391. or blind?

  392. Is it not I,

  393. the Lord?

  394. These are divine prerogatives

  395. that Jesus has assumed

  396. for himself.

  397. As we read also

  398. from our call to worship

  399. in Isaiah 35,

  400. he prophesied of a day

  401. when God himself

  402. would come

  403. and save his people.

  404. And on that day,

  405. he said,

  406. the eyes of the blind

  407. shall be opened

  408. and the ears

  409. of the deaf unstopped.

  410. Then shall the lame man

  411. leap like a deer

  412. and the tongue

  413. of the mute

  414. sing for joy.

  415. This is why

  416. these are the signs

  417. and these are the representations

  418. of the messianic age

  419. and that's why

  420. Matthew mentions

  421. and singles these miracles out

  422. of a sea of miracles

  423. that he could have used.

  424. He's saying

  425. the Messiah is here.

  426. Jesus is God

  427. in the flesh.

  428. But there is still

  429. one more way

  430. that Jesus is unlike

  431. any other ruler

  432. or deliverer

  433. that has ever lived.

  434. I noted earlier

  435. that Jesus does not

  436. heal the two blind men

  437. in public.

  438. He waits for a more

  439. private setting.

  440. In verses 30 to 31,

  441. we see why

  442. Jesus waited

  443. until he was inside

  444. the house.

  445. He says,

  446. Jesus sternly warned them,

  447. see that no one

  448. knows about it.

  449. Jesus is not telling them

  450. to keep the fact

  451. that they were healed

  452. of their blindness secret.

  453. If you think about that

  454. for one minute,

  455. you realize that

  456. that would be

  457. an impossible request.

  458. How do two blind men

  459. who used to not

  460. be able to see

  461. but now can see

  462. hide that fact

  463. from anyone around them?

  464. That's impossible

  465. to hide

  466. unless they pretend

  467. that they're blind

  468. for the rest of their lives.

  469. That's not what

  470. Jesus is talking about.

  471. He's telling them

  472. to hide,

  473. keep his identity

  474. concealed.

  475. They know who he is,

  476. the son of David,

  477. the Christ,

  478. the Messiah,

  479. the Lord,

  480. and he's telling them

  481. to not make that known.

  482. The common standard Bible,

  483. the Christian standard Bible,

  484. CSB translates it this way.

  485. Instead of saying nothing

  486. to anyone,

  487. it says,

  488. make sure no one finds out.

  489. He doesn't want them

  490. to find out who he is.

  491. That's why in verse 31,

  492. when they don't listen to him

  493. and they go out

  494. and telling people

  495. what happened,

  496. it says that they went away

  497. and spread his fame

  498. through all that district.

  499. That's what Jesus

  500. was concerned about.

  501. His identity being revealed,

  502. his fame spreading

  503. among the crowds.

  504. This secrecy,

  505. it fits the pattern

  506. of Jesus' ministry.

  507. Earlier in chapter 9,

  508. verse 25,

  509. when Jesus was raising

  510. the ruler's daughter

  511. from the dead,

  512. he first made sure

  513. that the crowd

  514. had been put outside

  515. of the house

  516. before he did the miracle.

  517. Later in 12, 16,

  518. after healing

  519. many of those

  520. who followed Jesus,

  521. he ordered them

  522. not to make him known.

  523. In Matthew 16, 19-21,

  524. after Peter confesses

  525. that Jesus is the Christ,

  526. the Messiah,

  527. Jesus tells his disciples,

  528. tell no one,

  529. he strictly charges

  530. the disciples

  531. to tell no one

  532. that he is the Christ.

  533. And then finally

  534. in chapter 17, verse 9,

  535. after temporarily revealing

  536. his divine glory

  537. at the transfiguration,

  538. Jesus tells his disciples,

  539. tell no one the vision

  540. until the Son of Man

  541. is raised from the dead.

  542. But why does Jesus

  543. hide the fact

  544. that he is the Messiah,

  545. the Christ?

  546. Why does he not reveal

  547. his full glory and power

  548. to everyone

  549. for all to see?

  550. Because Jesus

  551. is not interested

  552. in stirring up

  553. people's misguided

  554. zeal,

  555. messianic fervor.

  556. He is not interested

  557. in instigating

  558. a revolution

  559. and overthrowing Caesar.

  560. His goal wasn't

  561. to amass

  562. as many supporters

  563. and followers

  564. as he could

  565. because he wasn't

  566. trying to consolidate

  567. influence and power

  568. to make himself

  569. untouchable,

  570. which is what

  571. earthly rulers

  572. tried to do.

  573. Instead,

  574. Jesus knew

  575. that his destiny

  576. was to suffer

  577. and die

  578. on the cross

  579. for the sins

  580. of many

  581. as the sacrificial

  582. Lamb of God.

  583. Jesus could have

  584. overthrown Caesar

  585. if he wanted to.

  586. Could the man

  587. who opened

  588. the eyes

  589. of the blind

  590. instead

  591. strike people blind?

  592. Of course he could.

  593. Could the man

  594. who

  595. stopped

  596. and calmed

  597. a furious storm

  598. with the word

  599. of his mouth

  600. make a storm

  601. erupt

  602. to overtake

  603. the strongholds

  604. of his enemies?

  605. Of course he could

  606. do that.

  607. Could the man

  608. who raised

  609. someone from

  610. the dead

  611. also strike

  612. someone dead?

  613. He is the Lord

  614. of life

  615. and of all creation.

  616. Of course he could

  617. do that.

  618. In Matthew 26,

  619. 53,

  620. Jesus tells

  621. his disciples

  622. explicitly that

  623. if he wanted to,

  624. he could appeal

  625. to his heavenly

  626. father and he would

  627. at once send

  628. more than 12

  629. legions of angels

  630. to protect him

  631. and fight for him.

  632. But why

  633. doesn't Jesus

  634. do that?

  635. The Pharisees

  636. here

  637. detract from

  638. Jesus

  639. and slander

  640. Jesus

  641. in verse 34.

  642. He casts

  643. out demons

  644. by the prince

  645. of demons.

  646. But Jesus

  647. does nothing

  648. to retaliate.

  649. He doesn't

  650. even defend

  651. himself against

  652. their false

  653. argument

  654. until later

  655. in chapter 12.

  656. Jesus

  657. minds his own

  658. business

  659. and continues

  660. to proclaim

  661. the good news

  662. of the kingdom

  663. of God

  664. because that

  665. is what he

  666. came to do.

  667. Jesus is a man

  668. like no other

  669. and he saves

  670. us in a manner

  671. like no other.

  672. Jesus

  673. state his

  674. mission very

  675. clearly

  676. two passages

  677. ago that Todd

  678. preached on

  679. in chapter 9

  680. verse 12 to 13.

  681. Those who are

  682. well have no

  683. need of a physician

  684. but those

  685. who are sick

  686. go and learn

  687. what this means.

  688. I desire mercy

  689. and not sacrifice

  690. for I came

  691. not to call

  692. the righteous

  693. but sinners.

  694. the two

  695. blind men

  696. said to

  697. Jesus

  698. in verse 27

  699. have mercy

  700. on us

  701. son of David

  702. and that's

  703. exactly what

  704. Jesus did.

  705. If that is

  706. who Jesus

  707. is

  708. and what

  709. he came

  710. to do

  711. then how

  712. should we

  713. respond?

  714. What must

  715. we do?

  716. unless I

  717. missed something

  718. I don't

  719. think anyone

  720. here is

  721. physically

  722. blind

  723. but even

  724. if you

  725. and I

  726. are not

  727. physically

  728. blind

  729. all of

  730. us

  731. are

  732. spiritually

  733. blind

  734. by

  735. default

  736. later in

  737. chapters 15

  738. and 23

  739. Jesus

  740. repeatedly

  741. rebukes

  742. the Jewish

  743. leaders

  744. of his

  745. day

  746. for being

  747. spiritually

  748. blind

  749. he says

  750. in Matthew

  751. 15

  752. 14

  753. let them

  754. alone

  755. they are

  756. blind

  757. guides

  758. and if

  759. the blind

  760. lead

  761. the blind

  762. both will

  763. fall into

  764. a pit

  765. that is

  766. the unfortunate

  767. condition

  768. of every

  769. man

  770. and every

  771. woman

  772. apart from

  773. Jesus

  774. Christ

  775. 2nd Corinthians

  776. 4

  777. 4 says

  778. that the

  779. God of

  780. this

  781. world

  782. namely

  783. Satan

  784. the prince

  785. of demons

  786. the sinful

  787. world

  788. has blinded

  789. the minds

  790. of the

  791. unbelievers

  792. to keep

  793. them from

  794. seeing the

  795. light of

  796. the gospel

  797. of the

  798. glory of

  799. Christ

  800. who is

  801. the image

  802. of God

  803. not all

  804. of us

  805. have

  806. blindness

  807. of the

  808. eyes

  809. but all

  810. of us

  811. do have

  812. by default

  813. apart from

  814. Christ

  815. blindness

  816. of the

  817. mind

  818. so what

  819. then must

  820. we do

  821. we must

  822. take our

  823. cue from

  824. the two

  825. blind

  826. men

  827. who cry

  828. out to

  829. Jesus

  830. for mercy

  831. have

  832. mercy

  833. on us

  834. son of

  835. David

  836. mercy

  837. is not

  838. a wage

  839. or an

  840. award

  841. that we

  842. earn

  843. it's

  844. rather

  845. a pardon

  846. for guilty

  847. sinners

  848. it's

  849. favor

  850. for the

  851. undeserving

  852. we

  853. cannot

  854. attain

  855. spiritual

  856. sight

  857. or some

  858. kind

  859. of

  860. spiritual

  861. enlightenment

  862. by meditating

  863. for long

  864. enough

  865. or piling

  866. up enough

  867. merit

  868. or good

  869. deeds

  870. no

  871. spiritual

  872. sight

  873. is given

  874. as a

  875. gift

  876. by Jesus

  877. to those

  878. who

  879. humble

  880. themselves

  881. those

  882. who

  883. admit

  884. that

  885. they

  886. are

  887. sinners

  888. and

  889. acknowledge

  890. their

  891. need

  892. for

  893. mercy

  894. that's

  895. why

  896. if

  897. you're

  898. that

  899. person

  900. that

  901. that

  902. God

  903. spoke

  904. to

  905. through

  906. Lauren's

  907. prophecy

  908. earlier

  909. and you

  910. feel

  911. that

  912. your

  913. sins

  914. are

  915. too

  916. great

  917. that

  918. you

  919. cannot

  920. possibly

  921. be

  922. saved

  923. or you

  924. cannot

  925. possibly

  926. be

  927. loved

  928. actually

  929. you are

  930. exactly

  931. the kind

  932. of person

  933. who can

  934. receive

  935. the mercy

  936. of God

  937. because

  938. you're

  939. humbling

  940. yourself

  941. and

  942. acknowledging

  943. your need

  944. for mercy

  945. because mercy

  946. is not

  947. merit

  948. it is

  949. given to

  950. the undeserving

  951. it is

  952. pardoned for

  953. guilty

  954. sinners

  955. the biblical

  956. term for

  957. this

  958. humbling

  959. of

  960. yourself

  961. to

  962. receive

  963. God's

  964. mercy

  965. is

  966. faith

  967. believing

  968. in

  969. Jesus

  970. Jesus

  971. asked

  972. in

  973. verse

  974. 28

  975. do

  976. you

  977. believe

  978. that

  979. I

  980. am

  981. able

  982. to

  983. do

  984. this

  985. and

  986. it's

  987. only

  988. when

  989. the

  990. blind

  991. men

  992. reply

  993. yes

  994. Lord

  995. Jesus

  996. says

  997. according

  998. to

  999. your

  1000. faith

  1001. let

  1002. it

  1003. be

  1004. done

  1005. to

  1006. you

  1007. faith

  1008. as

  1009. a

  1010. prerequisite

  1011. for

  1012. healing

  1013. is

  1014. attested

  1015. in

  1016. numerous

  1017. places

  1018. in

  1019. scripture

  1020. later

  1021. in

  1022. chapter

  1023. 13

  1024. of

  1025. Matthew

  1026. it

  1027. says

  1028. that

  1029. Jesus

  1030. did

  1031. not

  1032. do

  1033. many

  1034. mighty

  1035. works

  1036. in

  1037. that

  1038. place

  1039. because

  1040. of

  1041. their

  1042. unbelief

  1043. faith

  1044. precedes

  1045. these

  1046. mighty

  1047. works

  1048. works

  1049. of

  1050. healing

  1051. we

  1052. often

  1053. want

  1054. God

  1055. to

  1056. work

  1057. on

  1058. our

  1059. terms

  1060. but

  1061. the

  1062. proper

  1063. posture

  1064. is

  1065. to

  1066. surrender

  1067. to

  1068. God

  1069. and

  1070. submit

  1071. ourselves

  1072. to

  1073. him

  1074. and

  1075. work

  1076. and

  1077. live

  1078. according

  1079. to

  1080. his

  1081. terms

  1082. belief

  1083. precedes

  1084. healing

  1085. and

  1086. just

  1087. as

  1088. faith

  1089. is

  1090. a

  1091. prerequisite

  1092. for

  1093. the

  1094. healing

  1095. of

  1096. physical

  1097. blindness

  1098. so

  1099. it

  1100. is

  1101. a

  1102. prerequisite

  1103. for

  1104. the

  1105. healing

  1106. of

  1107. spiritual

  1108. blindness

  1109. non-Christians

  1110. often say

  1111. I will

  1112. believe

  1113. in

  1114. Jesus

  1115. when

  1116. I

  1117. can

  1118. see

  1119. the

  1120. spiritual

  1121. realities

  1122. that

  1123. you

  1124. speak

  1125. of

  1126. it's

  1127. the

  1128. materialist

  1129. objection

  1130. I

  1131. will

  1132. only

  1133. believe

  1134. what

  1135. I

  1136. can

  1137. see

  1138. with

  1139. my

  1140. physical

  1141. eyes

  1142. however

  1143. the

  1144. spiritual

  1145. reality

  1146. is

  1147. precisely

  1148. the

  1149. opposite

  1150. we

  1151. must

  1152. first

  1153. believe

  1154. in order

  1155. to

  1156. see

  1157. the

  1158. blind

  1159. men

  1160. believe

  1161. Jesus

  1162. first

  1163. then

  1164. they

  1165. are

  1166. healed

  1167. in

  1168. accordance

  1169. with

  1170. their

  1171. faith

  1180. it

  1181. this

  1183. faith

  1184. is

  1185. to

  1186. believe

  1187. what

  1197. is

  1212. let

  1222. God

  1223. let

  1225. seek

  1226. you

  1227. in

  1228. desiring

  1239. find

  1240. you

  1241. in

  1248. in

  1249. finding

  1250. you

  1251. for

  1252. I

  1253. do

  1254. not

  1255. seek

  1256. to

  1257. understand

  1258. so

  1259. that

  1260. I

  1261. may

  1262. believe

  1263. but

  1264. I

  1265. believe

  1266. so

  1267. that

  1268. I

  1269. may

  1270. understand

  1271. I

  1272. often

  1273. take

  1274. my

  1275. three

  1277. out

  1278. to

  1279. swim

  1280. during

  1283. we're

  1284. just

  1285. out

  1286. yesterday

  1296. learning

  1297. how

  1298. to

  1299. float

  1300. and

  1301. no

  1302. matter

  1303. how

  1304. many

  1305. times

  1306. I

  1321. keep

  1322. my

  1323. hand

  1324. under

  1325. you

  1326. and

  1327. you

  1328. will

  1353. let

  1354. herself

  1355. go

  1356. no

  1358. how

  1359. many

  1360. times

  1361. I

  1362. tell

  1364. that

  1365. that's

  1366. the

  1367. case

  1368. it's

  1369. not

  1370. until

  1371. she

  1372. actually

  1373. lets

  1374. go

  1375. that

  1376. she

  1377. begins

  1378. to

  1379. know

  1380. that

  1381. she

  1382. can

  1383. float

  1384. !

  1385. that

  1386. the

  1387. water

  1388. can

  1389. support

  1390. her

  1391. weight

  1392. she's

  1393. finally

  1394. beginning

  1395. to

  1396. understand

  1397. the

  1398. freedom

  1399. of

  1400. floating

  1401. believe

  1402. what

  1403. you

  1404. do

  1405. not

  1406. see

  1407. and

  1408. you

  1409. will

  1410. see

  1411. what

  1412. you

  1413. believe

  1414. do

  1415. you

  1416. believe

  1417. that

  1418. Jesus

  1419. is

  1420. Lord

  1421. do

  1422. you

  1423. believe

  1424. that

  1425. he

  1426. is

  1427. the

  1428. son

  1429. of

  1430. God

  1431. do

  1432. you

  1433. believe

  1434. that

  1435. Jesus

  1436. is

  1437. able

  1438. to

  1439. save

  1440. you

  1441. do

  1442. you

  1443. believe

  1444. that

  1445. Jesus

  1446. died

  1447. on the

  1448. cross

  1449. for

  1450. your

  1451. sins

  1452. and

  1453. was

  1454. raised

  1455. from

  1456. the

  1458. on

  1459. the

  1470. can

  1471. sing

  1472. and

  1473. testify

  1474. unreservedly

  1475. what we

  1476. sang earlier

  1477. this morning

  1478. amazing

  1479. grace

  1480. how sweet

  1481. the sound

  1482. that saved

  1483. a wretch

  1484. like me

  1485. I once

  1486. was lost

  1487. but now

  1488. I'm found

  1489. I was

  1490. blind

  1498. a true

  1499. statement

  1500. we were

  1501. all once

  1502. blind

  1503. but in

  1504. your

  1505. mercy

  1506. you have

  1507. opened

  1508. our eyes

  1509. to see

  1510. your truth

  1511. your love

  1512. your salvation

  1513. and God

  1514. for that

  1515. you deserve

  1519. Lord

  1520. glad

  1521. recipients

  1522. of your

  1526. anyone

  1527. here

  1528. who has

  1529. not yet

  1530. surrendered

  1531. to that

  1532. mercy

  1533. help

  1534. them

  1535. open

  1536. their

  1537. blind

  1538. eyes

  1539. help

  1540. them

  1541. to let

  1542. go

  1543. entrust

  1544. themselves

  1545. to

  1546. Jesus

  1547. Christ

  1548. our

  1549. Lord
