  1. It's my joy and pleasure to bring God's Word to you guys this morning. I see a bunch of new faces.

  2. For those who don't know me, my name is Ed. I'm a pastoral resident here at Trinity Cambridge.

  3. I'm excited to be able to bring God's Word to you this morning.

  4. We are going to continue on in our sermon series in Matthew as we open up our Bibles.

  5. If you are in need of a Bible, feel free to raise your hand and we'll be happy to give you a Bible that you can use and you can keep yourself.

  6. If not, let's open up our Bibles to Matthew 11.

  7. The passage this morning will be from verses 1 to 24.

  8. Verses 1 to 24.

  9. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  10. Heavenly Father,

  11. we are a weak people,

  12. small people,

  13. beaten and battered

  14. by life,

  15. tempted by Satan,

  16. and struggling with our own habitual sin.

  17. And we see

  18. in our own experiences

  19. and in Scripture this morning

  20. that it's easy for us

  21. to doubt you.

  22. To doubt

  23. your existence,

  24. your promises,

  25. but I pray

  26. you would help me today

  27. to preach with clarity,

  28. with love,

  29. with wholeness,

  30. so that our faith

  31. would be built up

  32. so that we have

  33. faith

  34. that seeks understanding

  35. even in the midst

  36. of question

  37. and trial

  38. and confusion.

  39. So Lord,

  40. please

  41. meet us,

  42. address us by your Word.

  43. Won't you increase

  44. and that we decrease,

  45. Lord,

  46. as we look to you.

  47. In Jesus' name we pray.

  48. Thank you.

  49. If you are able,

  50. please rise

  51. for the reading

  52. of God's Word.

  53. Starting off

  54. in verse 1.

  55. When Jesus had finished

  56. instructing his 12 disciples,

  57. he went on from there

  58. to teach

  59. and preach

  60. in their cities.

  61. Now when John

  62. heard in prison

  63. about the deeds

  64. of the Christ,

  65. he sent word

  66. by his disciples

  67. and said to him,

  68. Are you the one

  69. who is to come

  70. or shall we look

  71. for another?

  72. And Jesus answered them,

  73. Go

  74. and tell John

  75. what you hear

  76. and see.

  77. The blind

  78. receive their sight,

  79. the lame walk,

  80. lepers are cleansed,

  81. and the deaf hear,

  82. and the dead

  83. are raised up,

  84. and the poor

  85. have good news

  86. preached to them.

  87. And blessed

  88. is the one

  89. who is not

  90. offended by me.

  91. As they went away,

  92. Jesus began

  93. to speak to the crowds

  94. concerning John.

  95. What did you go out

  96. into the wilderness

  97. to see?

  98. A reed shaken

  99. by the wind?

  100. What then

  101. did you go out

  102. to see?

  103. A man dressed

  104. in soft clothing?

  105. Behold,

  106. those who wear

  107. soft clothing

  108. are in king's houses.

  109. What then

  110. did you go out

  111. to see?

  112. A prophet?

  113. Yes,

  114. I tell you,

  115. and more

  116. than a prophet.

  117. This is he

  118. of whom it is written.

  119. Behold,

  120. I send my messenger

  121. before your face

  122. who will prepare

  123. your way

  124. before you.

  125. Truly,

  126. I say to you,

  127. among those

  128. born of women

  129. there has arisen

  130. no one greater

  131. than John the Baptist.

  132. Yet,

  133. the one

  134. who is least

  135. in the kingdom

  136. of heaven

  137. is greater

  138. than you.

  139. From the days

  140. of John the Baptist

  141. until now,

  142. the kingdom

  143. of heaven

  144. has suffered

  145. violence

  146. and the violence

  147. taken by force.

  148. For all the prophets

  149. and the law

  150. prophesied until John,

  151. and if you are

  152. willing to accept it,

  153. he is Elijah

  154. who is to come.

  155. He who has ears

  156. to hear,

  157. let him hear.

  158. But to what

  159. shall I compare

  160. this generation?

  161. it is like

  162. children

  163. sitting in the

  164. marketplaces

  165. and calling

  166. to their playmates.

  167. We played the

  168. flute for you

  169. and you did not

  170. dance.

  171. We sang a dirge

  172. and you did not

  173. dance.

  174. For John came

  175. neither eating

  176. nor drinking

  177. and they say,

  178. he has a demon.

  179. The son of man

  180. came eating

  181. and drinking

  182. and they say,

  183. look at him,

  184. a glutton

  185. and a drunker,

  186. a friend of

  187. task collectors

  188. and sinners.

  189. Yet wisdom

  190. is justified

  191. by her deeds.

  192. Then he began

  193. to denounce

  194. the cities

  195. where most

  196. of his mighty

  197. works have been

  198. done

  199. because they

  200. did not repent.

  201. Woe to you,

  202. Chorazin.

  203. Woe to you,

  204. Bethsaida.

  205. For if the

  206. mighty works

  207. done in you

  208. have been done

  209. in Tyre and Sidon,

  210. they would have

  211. repented long ago

  212. in sackcloth

  213. and ashes.

  214. But I tell you,

  215. it will be

  216. more bearable

  217. on the day

  218. of judgment

  219. for Tyre and Sidon

  220. than for whom?

  221. And you,

  222. Capernaum,

  223. will you be

  224. exalted to heaven?

  225. You will be

  226. brought down

  227. to Hades.

  228. For if the

  229. mighty works

  230. done in you

  231. had been done

  232. in Sodom,

  233. it would have

  234. remained

  235. until this day.

  236. But I tell you

  237. that it will be

  238. more tolerable

  239. on the day

  240. of judgment

  241. for the land

  242. of Sodom

  243. than for you.

  244. This is God's

  245. holy and

  246. exhortated word.

  247. You may be seated.

  248. I am struggling

  249. to believe in Jesus.

  250. I am plagued

  251. with doubts

  252. on whether God

  253. really is with you.

  254. I am not sure

  255. if I believe

  256. the Bible.

  257. If your friend

  258. honestly shared

  259. those concerns

  260. with you,

  261. how do you think

  262. that you would

  263. respond?

  264. What do you think

  265. that you would say?

  266. Back in college,

  267. I met regularly

  268. with a friend

  269. who was faithfully

  270. attending church,

  271. but for years

  272. struggled with

  273. this kind of doubt.

  274. Doubt about Jesus,

  275. doubt about his faith.

  276. I would regularly

  277. hear these opening

  278. lines

  279. from him.

  280. There were good

  281. weeks,

  282. there were bad

  283. weeks,

  284. but he always

  285. seemed to be

  286. stuck on the

  287. same death.

  288. In the end,

  289. we finished

  290. school,

  291. we moved away

  292. with him

  293. still being

  294. in the same

  295. place,

  296. still confessing

  297. the same

  298. doubts.

  299. What about you?

  300. Have you ever

  301. wrestled with

  302. these questions

  303. before,

  304. these doubts

  305. before?

  306. Are you struggling

  307. with doubts

  308. today?

  309. In our passage

  310. today,

  311. Matthew wants

  312. us to overcome

  313. our doubts

  314. by faith.

  315. And the

  316. Son of God

  317. needs to apply

  318. reasons for

  319. us to do so,

  320. reason after

  321. reason.

  322. So the main

  323. point of this

  324. passage and

  325. my sermon

  326. is simple.

  327. It's because

  328. of his ministry

  329. and because

  330. of his

  331. messenger,

  332. believe that

  333. Jesus is the

  334. Messiah.

  335. But Matthew

  336. doesn't just

  337. state that

  338. truth,

  339. he shows us

  340. two real

  341. contrasting

  342. examples,

  343. responses to

  344. Jesus.

  345. On the one

  346. hand,

  347. you have

  348. John the

  349. Baptist,

  350. on the other

  351. you have

  352. this wicked

  353. generation.

  354. One exemplified

  355. humble faith,

  356. seeking

  357. understanding,

  358. the other

  359. a heart-hearted

  360. skepticism,

  361. demanding

  362. proof.

  363. One said,

  364. I believe,

  365. help my unbelief,

  366. the other

  367. said,

  368. I don't

  369. believe.

  370. Prove me

  371. wrong.

  372. As a result,

  373. there is a

  374. stark contrast

  375. in the way

  376. that Jesus

  377. responds to

  378. these two

  379. people.

  380. And that's

  381. going to be

  382. the main

  383. roadmap for

  384. the rest of

  385. this sermon.

  386. you can

  387. follow along

  388. on the

  389. screen.

  390. We'll

  391. see first

  392. how John

  393. doubts

  394. Jesus,

  395. but in

  396. turn,

  397. Jesus

  398. defends

  399. John.

  400. And then

  401. we'll learn

  402. of what not

  403. to do,

  404. how not to

  405. deal with

  406. our doubts,

  407. by reading

  408. how these

  409. wicked cities

  410. deny Jesus,

  411. and in

  412. turn,

  413. Jesus

  414. denounces

  415. them.

  416. Getting

  417. into the

  418. text now,

  419. in verse

  420. one,

  421. we read

  422. that Matthew

  423. signals a

  424. transition to

  425. the next

  426. phase of

  427. the narrative

  428. as Jesus

  429. wraps up

  430. his discourse

  431. on missions

  432. in chapter

  433. 10.

  434. And he

  435. moves on

  436. to carry

  437. out his

  438. ministry,

  439. to teach

  440. and preach

  441. through the

  442. cities.

  443. Even when

  444. Jesus performed

  445. grand miracles

  446. like cleansing

  447. lepers,

  448. or raising

  449. people from

  450. the dead,

  451. it's fascinating

  452. that Matthew

  453. summarizes

  454. Jesus'

  455. ministry in

  456. this particular

  457. way,

  458. focusing on

  459. his teaching

  460. and his

  461. preaching.

  462. After all,

  463. wouldn't those

  464. miracles stand

  465. out most

  466. in your

  467. mind?

  468. If someone

  469. today taught

  470. to preach

  471. and performed

  472. miracles,

  473. we'd like to

  474. focus on

  475. the miracles,

  476. but Matthew,

  477. he has a

  478. different focus.

  479. He highlights

  480. the preaching

  481. ultimately because

  482. these miracles,

  483. these healings,

  484. they were never

  485. the primary focus

  486. of Jesus'

  487. ministry.

  488. They instead

  489. were just

  490. these big,

  491. bright,

  492. neon-lit

  493. signs to

  494. confirm

  495. Jesus'

  496. message.

  497. It's an

  498. affirmation,

  499. it's God's

  500. affirmation to

  501. the preached

  502. message of

  503. Christ,

  504. that he is

  505. the foretold

  506. Messiah.

  507. After all,

  508. God would

  509. not work

  510. such amazing

  511. miracles through

  512. the mouth

  513. of a lion.

  514. God.

  515. And if

  516. Jesus came

  517. primarily to

  518. teach and

  519. preach about

  520. his identity,

  521. we then

  522. carry out

  523. that legacy,

  524. that same

  525. focus in

  526. our mission,

  527. as we

  528. fulfill the

  529. great commission,

  530. teaching in

  531. every community,

  532. every county,

  533. every country,

  534. every continent,

  535. to obey,

  536. teaching everyone

  537. to obey what

  538. Jesus has

  539. commanded us to

  540. do.

  541. Now, as

  542. Jesus is

  543. teaching throughout

  544. the cities in

  545. verses 2 to

  546. 3, he's

  547. interrupted by

  548. a question,

  549. a question from

  550. a few of

  551. John the

  552. Baptist

  553. deciders.

  554. If you're

  555. new to our

  556. Matthew series,

  557. or simply

  558. new to the

  559. Bible, John

  560. the Baptist

  561. was a prophet

  562. sent by God

  563. with one

  564. singular mission,

  565. to prepare the

  566. way for the

  567. Messiah.

  568. He preached

  569. repentance and

  570. baptized crowds

  571. all to prepare

  572. people for the

  573. arrival of the

  574. Messiah.

  575. And even when

  576. he was massively

  577. popular, and

  578. everyone saw

  579. him and his

  580. baptism, John

  581. unwaveringly

  582. testified that

  583. he is not, he

  584. was not the

  585. Messiah.

  586. So given all

  587. that John had

  588. already said

  589. and seen, this

  590. question from

  591. John is quite

  592. astonishing.

  593. He asks,

  594. are you the

  595. one who

  596. is to come?

  597. Or shall we

  598. look for

  599. another?

  600. Huh?

  601. What?

  602. John is

  603. suddenly filled

  604. with doubt.

  605. Unlike my

  606. college friends,

  607. John isn't

  608. doubting the

  609. reliability of

  610. the scriptures,

  611. or the

  612. existence of

  613. God, or

  614. even his

  615. promise of

  616. Messiah, but

  617. John is

  618. now doubting

  619. if Jesus is

  620. the true

  621. Messiah.

  622. Before, John

  623. refused, tried

  624. to refuse to

  625. baptize Jesus,

  626. saying that I

  627. need to be

  628. baptized by you,

  629. but now he's

  630. questioning,

  631. not sure.

  632. Once

  633. convictional,

  634. but now

  635. confused.

  636. Once

  637. settled,

  638. but now

  639. shaken.

  640. But why

  641. did John

  642. now doubt

  643. Jesus?

  644. First, it

  645. seems like

  646. John is

  647. expecting a

  648. completely

  649. different

  650. ministry from

  651. the Messiah.

  652. After

  653. proclaiming that

  654. he is not

  655. the Christ,

  656. in chapter 3 of

  657. Matthew,

  658. John continues

  659. to say,

  660. his

  661. wind and

  662. fork is

  663. in his

  664. hand, and

  665. he will

  666. clear his

  667. threshing

  668. floor and

  669. gather his

  670. wheat into

  671. the barn, but

  672. the chaff he

  673. will burn

  674. with fun

  675. punch the

  676. fire.

  677. It

  678. sounds like

  679. John, he's

  680. expecting Jesus

  681. to come with

  682. fire, with

  683. judgment, with

  684. vengeance, to

  685. overthrow the

  686. evil in the

  687. world.

  688. John didn't

  689. expect the

  690. foretold

  691. Messiah to

  692. be

  693. eating, dining

  694. with prostitutes

  695. and tax

  696. collectors, let

  697. alone even

  698. choosing one

  699. tax collector

  700. to be his

  701. disciple.

  702. And

  703. secondly, there's

  704. a small detail

  705. that we skipped

  706. over that

  707. might be part

  708. of the reason

  709. why John is

  710. down.

  711. He is in

  712. prison.

  713. We find out

  714. later in

  715. Matthew 14

  716. why he's in

  717. prison, because

  718. he had boldly

  719. rebukes.

  720. Hannah, the

  721. tetrarch, the

  722. Roman leader

  723. of the land

  724. for his

  725. immoral

  726. marriage.

  727. And you

  728. have to

  729. understand that

  730. prisons back

  731. then were

  732. much, much,

  733. much worse

  734. compared to

  735. prisons today.

  736. Prisons today

  737. are five-star

  738. marriage compared

  739. to prisons

  740. back then.

  741. Back then,

  742. conditions were

  743. unsanitary,

  744. poorly

  745. ventilated,

  746. with limited

  747. food, little

  748. access to

  749. daylight, and

  750. given Harry's

  751. reputation as

  752. a tyrannical

  753. ruler.

  754. He knows

  755. that his

  756. life is

  757. unlawed.

  758. His external

  759. circumstances are

  760. squeezing John

  761. and testing

  762. his faith.

  763. So I think it

  764. makes sense why

  765. John would

  766. question why

  767. Jesus isn't

  768. coming thrashing,

  769. burning,

  770. judging, when

  771. he is currently

  772. suffering at the

  773. hands of the

  774. wicked.

  775. knowing all

  776. this, Jesus

  777. responds to

  778. John in

  779. truly a

  780. most gracious

  781. manner.

  782. It's not

  783. soaked with

  784. passive

  785. aggression or

  786. disappointment.

  787. It doesn't

  788. say, come

  789. on, John,

  790. I thought you

  791. knew better

  792. than this.

  793. John,

  794. John,

  795. John,

  796. you know

  797. better.

  798. No, he

  799. patiently,

  800. gently answers

  801. John,

  802. saying, the

  803. blind receive

  804. their sight from

  805. a walk,

  806. lepers are

  807. cleansed,

  808. and the

  809. deaf hear,

  810. and the

  811. dead are

  812. raised up,

  813. and the

  814. poor have

  815. good news

  816. preached to

  817. them.

  818. Now, in the

  819. recent passages

  820. in Matthew,

  821. particularly in

  822. chapters 8 and

  823. 9, we've seen

  824. Jesus do all of

  825. these things,

  826. haven't we?

  827. Jesus has

  828. likely performed

  829. lots more

  830. miracles than

  831. the ones that

  832. we actually see

  833. in these

  834. chapters, but

  835. we don't

  836. read specific

  837. examples about

  838. them, or

  839. specific details

  840. rather, because

  841. editor Matthew,

  842. he's down-selected

  843. these few

  844. miracles, all so

  845. that we as

  846. readers would

  847. get to this

  848. quote in

  849. chapter 11,

  850. saying, ah,

  851. yes, John,

  852. or Jesus, has

  853. done all of

  854. these things.

  855. And while

  856. this isn't a

  857. direct quote from

  858. one Old

  859. Testament prophet,

  860. Jesus does seem

  861. to be fulfilling

  862. a combination

  863. of two

  864. messianic

  865. prophecies from

  866. Isaiah 35 and

  867. 61, which I

  868. threw up on the

  869. screen here,

  870. John, who

  871. would have

  872. intimately known

  873. the book of

  874. Isaiah, would

  875. have understood

  876. what Jesus

  877. was saying.

  878. By giving

  879. concrete evidence

  880. of his ministry,

  881. of his work,

  882. Jesus affirms

  883. that the

  884. wait is over.

  885. He is the

  886. foretold

  887. Messiah.

  888. John is

  889. right that

  890. Jesus will

  891. come to judge

  892. the living and

  893. the dead, but

  894. that's not

  895. now.

  896. That's later.

  897. For now,

  898. look, look

  899. clearly at the

  900. evidence of who

  901. Jesus is.

  902. Because of his

  903. ministry,

  904. believe, be

  905. convinced, have

  906. no doubt, that

  907. Jesus is the

  908. Messiah.

  909. God.

  910. If you are

  911. struggling with

  912. doubt today, or

  913. if you're trying

  914. to minister to a

  915. doubting Christian,

  916. I think there

  917. are four quick

  918. lessons that we

  919. can read from

  920. this passage.

  921. Number one,

  922. ask Jesus

  923. honestly.

  924. Just as

  925. John the

  926. Baptist wasn't

  927. afraid to ask

  928. Jesus the

  929. honest questions,

  930. the raw

  931. questions, don't

  932. be afraid to

  933. admit to

  934. yourself and

  935. to others and

  936. before God, the

  937. things that you're

  938. thinking and

  939. struggling with.

  940. There is truly

  941. great value in

  942. working through

  943. your doubts,

  944. because frankly

  945. speaking, if you

  946. have never

  947. struggled through

  948. any kind of

  949. doubt throughout

  950. your entire

  951. Christian life,

  952. it may be

  953. because you

  954. have not truly

  955. made faith

  956. your own.

  957. Then when

  958. tragedy

  959. strives or

  960. when a smart

  961. skeptic

  962. attacks,

  963. your faith

  964. is shown to

  965. be a

  966. house of

  967. thoughts.

  968. But as

  969. you work

  970. through your

  971. doubts,

  972. bring them

  973. before God.

  974. Bobby Conway,

  975. the author of

  976. the book

  977. Doubting

  978. Towards Faith,

  979. he makes

  980. the arguments

  981. that doubt

  982. is directional.

  983. You either

  984. doubt for

  985. God or you

  986. doubt away

  987. from Him.

  988. John exemplified

  989. the former,

  990. doubting

  991. toward God,

  992. to Jesus,

  993. with a faith

  994. that sought

  995. understanding.

  996. So bring

  997. your doubts

  998. to God,

  999. and He

  1000. will answer

  1001. them.

  1002. Number two,

  1003. reflect on

  1004. the evidence.

  1005. When Jesus

  1006. answers John,

  1007. he doesn't

  1008. say,

  1009. go searching

  1010. within your

  1011. heart to go

  1012. figure out

  1013. what you

  1014. feel is

  1015. through.

  1016. what you

  1017. feel is

  1018. most important.

  1019. The answer

  1020. is within you.

  1021. He doesn't

  1022. say that.

  1023. Instead,

  1024. he gives

  1025. them a

  1026. cold,

  1027. hard fact

  1028. about what

  1029. Jesus has

  1030. done and

  1031. who He

  1032. is.

  1033. If you

  1034. are struggling

  1035. with doubt

  1036. today,

  1037. take time

  1038. to study

  1039. and reflect

  1040. on the

  1041. concrete

  1042. evidence we

  1043. have for

  1044. our faith,

  1045. the historical

  1046. evidence of

  1047. the resurrection

  1048. of our

  1049. Messiah,

  1050. the reliability

  1051. of our

  1052. scriptures,

  1053. solid

  1054. philosophical

  1055. reasons to

  1056. believe in

  1057. God,

  1058. even just

  1059. look to

  1060. nation.

  1061. And as

  1062. you study

  1063. my third

  1064. point is,

  1065. be willing

  1066. to correct

  1067. any

  1068. misconceptions

  1069. that you

  1070. have about

  1071. the Christian

  1072. faith.

  1073. Perhaps

  1074. you're doubting

  1075. your faith

  1076. because ultimately

  1077. you have a

  1078. wrong understanding

  1079. about

  1080. Christianity.

  1081. If you

  1082. grew up hearing

  1083. the health

  1084. and wealth

  1085. gospel,

  1086. believing that

  1087. if you put

  1088. that point

  1089. in the

  1090. offering box

  1091. that your

  1092. life will

  1093. be amazing,

  1094. pain-free,

  1095. blessing-filled,

  1096. and that when

  1097. tragedy strikes,

  1098. when life

  1099. knocks you

  1100. down and

  1101. kicks you

  1102. in the

  1103. teeth,

  1104. your

  1105. faith

  1106. is

  1107. shaking.

  1108. Just as

  1109. John the

  1110. Baptist had

  1111. to learn

  1112. and be

  1113. corrected,

  1114. be willing,

  1115. be willing to

  1116. learn and to

  1117. correct any

  1118. misconceptions

  1119. that you

  1120. might have

  1121. about the

  1122. faith.

  1123. finally,

  1124. number four,

  1125. give proper

  1126. weight to

  1127. life

  1128. circumstances.

  1129. Understand

  1130. that we

  1131. are not

  1132. robots.

  1133. John the

  1134. Baptist was

  1135. not a

  1136. robot.

  1137. No one

  1138. is immune

  1139. to hardship

  1140. and Jesus

  1141. knows our

  1142. friend,

  1143. he knows

  1144. that we

  1145. are but

  1146. us.

  1147. Understand

  1148. that more

  1149. times than

  1150. not,

  1151. doubts

  1152. are not

  1153. necessarily

  1154. intellectual

  1155. in nature

  1156. or in

  1157. their

  1158. origin.

  1159. When a

  1160. Christian

  1161. unjustly

  1162. fires,

  1163. or suffers

  1164. a miscarriage,

  1165. or loses

  1166. a spouse,

  1167. that stuff

  1168. is hard.

  1169. It's really,

  1170. really hard.

  1171. And it

  1172. shakes,

  1173. it can shake

  1174. your head.

  1175. But the

  1176. good news of

  1177. the gospel is

  1178. that we are

  1179. not,

  1180. ultimately,

  1181. the same

  1182. by the

  1183. clarity

  1184. or the

  1185. intensity

  1186. of our

  1187. faith,

  1188. but by

  1189. the

  1190. objects

  1191. of it.

  1192. Imagine

  1193. you and

  1194. a friend,

  1195. probably

  1196. John Buckley,

  1197. hiking out

  1198. in Mount

  1199. Washington

  1200. in the

  1201. cold

  1202. winters,

  1203. where you

  1204. suddenly run

  1205. into an

  1206. angry

  1207. bear.

  1208. In

  1209. fleeing,

  1210. you guys

  1211. get split

  1212. up.

  1213. the only

  1214. option is

  1215. for you

  1216. guys to

  1217. jump into

  1218. a frozen

  1219. pond,

  1220. hoping that

  1221. the ice

  1222. will be

  1223. strong enough

  1224. for you.

  1225. Your

  1226. friend John,

  1227. the Cisco

  1228. John,

  1229. John has a

  1230. strong assurance

  1231. that his

  1232. section of the

  1233. pond is going

  1234. to hold

  1235. his weight.

  1236. He's going

  1237. to survive.

  1238. You're in a

  1239. different spot.

  1240. Your mind is

  1241. filled with

  1242. doubts,

  1243. uncertainty,

  1244. that the

  1245. ice will

  1246. hold you

  1247. up.

  1248. But you

  1249. both

  1250. jump,

  1251. only to

  1252. find out

  1253. that only

  1254. you can

  1255. stand.

  1256. Sorry to

  1257. kill you

  1258. off in

  1259. the sword.

  1260. It's not

  1261. the strength

  1262. of your

  1263. faith,

  1264. but the

  1265. object of

  1266. your faith

  1267. that saves

  1268. you.

  1269. But if

  1270. you're able

  1271. to work

  1272. through your

  1273. doubts,

  1274. just as

  1275. John the

  1276. Baptist

  1277. did,

  1278. Jesus

  1279. promises

  1280. another

  1281. beatitude,

  1282. just like

  1283. he did

  1284. in the

  1285. Sermon on

  1286. the Mount,

  1287. he uses

  1288. the same

  1289. word and

  1290. the same

  1291. sentence

  1292. brushes.

  1293. He says,

  1294. blessed

  1295. is the

  1296. one who

  1297. is not

  1298. offended

  1299. by you.

  1300. Now,

  1301. as gentle

  1302. and gracious

  1303. Jesus has

  1304. been to

  1305. John,

  1306. this last

  1307. statement

  1308. feels like

  1309. and it

  1310. is.

  1311. It's a

  1312. mild

  1313. repute

  1314. to

  1315. John.

  1316. And I'm

  1317. glad that

  1318. this is

  1319. here.

  1320. In our

  1321. day and

  1322. age,

  1323. suspicion,

  1324. skepticism,

  1325. our praise,

  1326. conviction,

  1327. and assurance

  1328. of truth

  1329. are denigrated.

  1330. Our secular

  1331. culture teaches

  1332. us to

  1333. question

  1334. everything,

  1335. missing the

  1336. fact that

  1337. the purpose

  1338. of questioning

  1339. is to

  1340. arrive at

  1341. truth,

  1342. not to

  1343. question

  1344. indefinitely.

  1345. it.

  1346. Like the

  1347. gnostic

  1348. who insists

  1349. that we

  1350. can never

  1351. really know

  1352. whether God

  1353. exists or

  1354. not because

  1355. he believes

  1356. endless

  1357. uncertainty

  1358. is better

  1359. than

  1360. arriving at

  1361. conviction,

  1362. arriving at

  1363. truth.

  1364. People

  1365. claim to

  1366. see through

  1367. things,

  1368. especially

  1369. religion,

  1370. and they

  1371. call that

  1372. wisdom.

  1373. love.

  1374. But here,

  1375. see us

  1376. who will speak

  1377. about this

  1378. attitude prevalent

  1379. today.

  1380. You cannot

  1381. go on seeing

  1382. through things

  1383. forever.

  1384. The whole

  1385. point of

  1386. seeing through

  1387. something is to

  1388. see something

  1389. through it.

  1390. it is good

  1391. that the

  1392. window should

  1393. be transparent

  1394. because the

  1395. street or

  1396. garden beyond

  1397. it is opaque.

  1398. How if you

  1399. saw through

  1400. the garden too?

  1401. If you see

  1402. through everything,

  1403. then everything

  1404. is transparent.

  1405. But a

  1406. wholly transparent

  1407. world is an

  1408. invisible world.

  1409. To see

  1410. through all

  1411. things is

  1412. the same

  1413. as not

  1414. to see.

  1415. Jesus

  1416. wants us

  1417. to see,

  1418. to see

  1419. with faith

  1420. who he

  1421. really is.

  1422. He wants

  1423. us to have

  1424. the faith

  1425. that overcomes

  1426. doubts.

  1427. So he

  1428. promises this

  1429. blessing,

  1430. this joy to

  1431. all those who

  1432. work through

  1433. their doubts

  1434. with a faith

  1435. that seeks

  1436. understanding

  1437. and a faith

  1438. that ultimately

  1439. accepts Jesus

  1440. as the

  1441. Messiah.

  1442. This is a

  1443. kind of funny

  1444. way to

  1445. pronounce true

  1446. blessing,

  1447. is it not?

  1448. You might

  1449. expect Jesus

  1450. to say,

  1451. blessed is

  1452. the one

  1453. who gives

  1454. up your

  1455. life for

  1456. me or

  1457. serves me.

  1458. And those

  1459. things are

  1460. true,

  1461. but on

  1462. your first

  1463. reading,

  1464. it almost

  1465. might sound

  1466. like Jesus

  1467. is lowering

  1468. the bar

  1469. for obedience.

  1470. All that

  1471. you have to

  1472. do is

  1473. not be

  1474. offended

  1475. by Jesus.

  1476. That might

  1477. seem easy

  1478. at first,

  1479. but Jesus

  1480. knows that

  1481. in the end,

  1482. he and his

  1483. ministry

  1484. would ultimately

  1485. be incredibly

  1486. polarizing

  1487. and offend

  1488. the

  1489. multitudes.

  1490. Why?

  1491. Because

  1492. Jesus knew

  1493. that he

  1494. would not

  1495. be the

  1496. kind of

  1497. Messiah

  1498. that the

  1499. public

  1500. would be

  1501. expecting.

  1502. Not the

  1503. kind of

  1504. Messiah

  1505. celebrated

  1506. by everybody.

  1507. Even

  1508. John the

  1509. Baptist

  1510. expected

  1511. somebody

  1512. different.

  1513. The same

  1514. is true

  1515. today.

  1516. Lots of

  1517. people like

  1518. Jesus.

  1519. They do.

  1520. They like

  1521. him as a

  1522. moral teacher

  1523. or as a

  1524. good man.

  1525. But then,

  1526. when they

  1527. actually

  1528. understand

  1529. Jesus is

  1530. the only

  1531. way to

  1532. salvation,

  1533. when Jesus

  1534. challenges

  1535. them on

  1536. their sin,

  1537. then they're

  1538. offended.

  1539. And

  1540. although

  1541. perhaps

  1542. John was

  1543. offended

  1544. by Jesus

  1545. and did

  1546. struggle

  1547. without,

  1548. he,

  1549. again,

  1550. embodied

  1551. faith that

  1552. sought

  1553. understanding,

  1554. so in

  1555. turn,

  1556. ultimately,

  1557. we'll see

  1558. how Jesus

  1559. responds.

  1560. After his

  1561. disciples leave,

  1562. notice how

  1563. Jesus immediately

  1564. turns to

  1565. defend John

  1566. before the

  1567. cross.

  1568. He does

  1569. so with a

  1570. series of

  1571. rhetorical

  1572. questions and

  1573. figurative

  1574. metaphors to

  1575. describe who

  1576. John is.

  1577. But when

  1578. John's

  1579. popularity

  1580. among the

  1581. Jews,

  1582. he asks,

  1583. what did

  1584. they go

  1585. out all

  1586. to see?

  1587. First,

  1588. he can

  1589. contrasts

  1590. John with

  1591. a reed

  1592. shaken

  1593. by the

  1594. wind,

  1595. reeds

  1596. a light

  1597. and slender

  1598. plant that

  1599. thrives in

  1600. marshy areas

  1601. where likely

  1602. are easily

  1603. and constantly

  1604. slung about

  1605. by the

  1606. wind.

  1607. And at

  1608. that time,

  1609. the term

  1610. likely had

  1611. cultural

  1612. baggage

  1613. too,

  1614. when rabbis

  1615. would use

  1616. that phrase

  1617. to insult

  1618. the toothpicks,

  1619. those who

  1620. would easily

  1621. flip-flop

  1622. between opinions

  1623. just to

  1624. please the

  1625. masses

  1626. and again

  1627. achieve their

  1628. own agendas.

  1629. But even

  1630. when John

  1631. was moved,

  1632. he was

  1633. shaken in

  1634. his doubts.

  1635. Jesus is so

  1636. gracious.

  1637. He sees

  1638. John not

  1639. as a reed

  1640. shaken by

  1641. the wind,

  1642. but as a

  1643. steady,

  1644. strong,

  1645. oak tree.

  1646. Next,

  1647. Jesus speaks

  1648. about soft

  1649. clothing that

  1650. can only be

  1651. found in

  1652. kings'

  1653. houses,

  1654. those who

  1655. would kiss

  1656. their way

  1657. up,

  1658. you know,

  1659. flattery and

  1660. gifts.

  1661. They would do

  1662. all these

  1663. things so

  1664. that they

  1665. could make

  1666. it,

  1667. be comfortable

  1668. living in

  1669. the king's

  1670. house in

  1671. their smooth

  1672. satin robes

  1673. or their

  1674. comfortable

  1675. casual

  1676. flares.

  1677. But John

  1678. wasn't like

  1679. that.

  1680. He wore

  1681. garments of

  1682. canons

  1683. and a

  1684. leather belt,

  1685. clothing that

  1686. embodied his

  1687. practical devotion

  1688. to God and

  1689. his separation

  1690. from the rest

  1691. of the world.

  1692. And at the

  1693. last question,

  1694. Jesus gets to

  1695. the main

  1696. point.

  1697. He identifies

  1698. John as a

  1699. prophet, but

  1700. not just any

  1701. prophet, the

  1702. final prophet,

  1703. the one who

  1704. would predict

  1705. the arrival of

  1706. the coming

  1707. Messiah.

  1708. Actually, he

  1709. was more than

  1710. a prophet because

  1711. he didn't just

  1712. predict Jesus

  1713. from a distance

  1714. away.

  1715. He personally

  1716. prepared the

  1717. way for Jesus.

  1718. and he

  1719. introduced Jesus

  1720. to the world.

  1721. No other

  1722. prophet in the

  1723. Old Testament

  1724. and the Old

  1725. Covenant could

  1726. claim that

  1727. for us.

  1728. And that's

  1729. what makes

  1730. John the

  1731. greatest of

  1732. all those

  1733. born of

  1734. women before

  1735. the coming

  1736. of the

  1737. kingdom,

  1738. which is

  1739. just another

  1740. way to say

  1741. that he is

  1742. the greatest

  1743. of all the

  1744. Old Covenancies.

  1745. He was

  1746. greater.

  1747. He's greater

  1748. than Abraham,

  1749. greater than

  1750. Moses, greater

  1751. than David.

  1752. Why?

  1753. It was, again,

  1754. one thing.

  1755. John's

  1756. historical

  1757. proximity to

  1758. Jesus is the

  1759. one thing that

  1760. made him the

  1761. greatest.

  1762. That he

  1763. personally

  1764. introduced the

  1765. world to

  1766. Jesus.

  1767. In other

  1768. words, simply

  1769. put, Jesus

  1770. is what made

  1771. John

  1772. great.

  1773. God

  1774. is the

  1775. greatest.

  1776. Only with

  1777. that metric

  1778. of greatness

  1779. can we then

  1780. understand this

  1781. next verse.

  1782. Because while

  1783. John was

  1784. greater than

  1785. anyone in

  1786. the Old

  1787. Covenant,

  1788. that's the

  1789. era of

  1790. prophecy.

  1791. That's the

  1792. era of

  1793. waiting,

  1794. anticipation,

  1795. preparation.

  1796. But Jesus

  1797. teaches us in

  1798. verse 11 that

  1799. the one who

  1800. is last in

  1801. the kingdom

  1802. of heaven is

  1803. greater than

  1804. him.

  1805. what does

  1806. that mean?

  1807. The key to

  1808. understanding this

  1809. verse is

  1810. understanding that

  1811. John the

  1812. Baptist, because

  1813. he lived and

  1814. died before

  1815. Jesus' death

  1816. and resurrection,

  1817. isn't counted

  1818. as part of the

  1819. new covenant

  1820. people of God.

  1821. Instead, he

  1822. functions, again,

  1823. as the last

  1824. prophet of the

  1825. Old Covenant,

  1826. the transitional

  1827. figure between

  1828. the two eras,

  1829. the Old

  1830. Era of

  1831. prophecy,

  1832. the Old

  1833. Era of

  1834. anticipation,

  1835. gives way to

  1836. the Era of

  1837. fulfillment,

  1838. of arriving.

  1839. And that's

  1840. why the

  1841. least of us

  1842. who live on

  1843. this side of

  1844. the cross is

  1845. greater than

  1846. the greatest

  1847. man on that

  1848. side of the

  1849. cross.

  1850. So if you're

  1851. here today and

  1852. you have put

  1853. your faith in

  1854. Jesus Christ,

  1855. you are

  1856. greater than

  1857. John the

  1858. Baptist,

  1859. you are

  1860. greater than

  1861. Abraham,

  1862. you are

  1863. greater than

  1864. Moses and

  1865. David.

  1866. because of

  1867. the unbelievable

  1868. privilege that

  1869. you have as

  1870. a new covenant

  1871. saint of God,

  1872. you have

  1873. specific knowledge

  1874. and participation

  1875. in the new

  1876. covenant in

  1877. Jesus' blood.

  1878. Matthew 13,

  1879. 17 says,

  1880. many prophets

  1881. and righteous

  1882. people longed

  1883. to see what

  1884. you see,

  1885. and they did

  1886. not see it,

  1887. and to hear

  1888. what you hear,

  1889. and they did

  1890. not hear it.

  1891. You may read

  1892. the stories of

  1893. how Moses

  1894. personally talked

  1895. to God face

  1896. to face,

  1897. or how Jacob

  1898. wrestled with

  1899. God,

  1900. or how Israelites

  1901. walked through

  1902. the Red Sea,

  1903. and a part of

  1904. us, when we

  1905. read stories like

  1906. that, we feel

  1907. like, yeah, I

  1908. wish I could

  1909. have been there,

  1910. I wish I could

  1911. have experienced

  1912. these things.

  1913. But the truth

  1914. is, they

  1915. wish to be

  1916. like us,

  1917. because we

  1918. have the

  1919. unbelievable

  1920. spiritual

  1921. privilege to

  1922. have the

  1923. whole testimony

  1924. of God in

  1925. the canon of

  1926. scripture, to

  1927. have the

  1928. Pentecostal

  1929. gift of the

  1930. Holy Spirit

  1931. indwelling us

  1932. now, and

  1933. most importantly,

  1934. we get to

  1935. have a

  1936. relationship

  1937. with Jesus,

  1938. with King

  1939. Jesus.

  1940. All the

  1941. Old Testament

  1942. saints longed

  1943. to hear what

  1944. we hear,

  1945. to see what

  1946. we see.

  1947. So may we

  1948. never lose the

  1949. wonder of the

  1950. privilege it is

  1951. to be in

  1952. relationship with

  1953. our King

  1954. Jesus.

  1955. Verse 12

  1956. is one of the

  1957. hardest verses

  1958. in all the

  1959. book of Matthew

  1960. to interpret and

  1961. translate, and

  1962. to be honest,

  1963. I'm still not

  1964. quite sure, but

  1965. I think that the

  1966. ESC, along with

  1967. many other

  1968. reliable

  1969. translations,

  1970. they get it

  1971. right when it

  1972. says, from the

  1973. days of John

  1974. the Baptist

  1975. until now, the

  1976. kingdom of

  1977. heaven has

  1978. suffered violence

  1979. and the

  1980. violent

  1981. taken by

  1982. force.

  1983. Although the

  1984. time from

  1985. John the

  1986. Baptist until

  1987. the point of

  1988. the kingdom,

  1989. the point that

  1990. Jesus is

  1991. speaking, that

  1992. time is

  1993. comparatively

  1994. short.

  1995. But even

  1996. within that

  1997. short time,

  1998. the kingdom

  1999. has suffered

  2000. great violence.

  2001. you have

  2002. exhibit A

  2003. in John,

  2004. who is

  2005. currently

  2006. brought in

  2007. the way

  2008. in a

  2009. dingy

  2010. prison cell.

  2011. Take

  2012. Joseph and

  2013. Mary, who

  2014. had to

  2015. flee

  2016. Bethlehem to

  2017. protect

  2018. baby Jesus

  2019. from King

  2020. Herod, who

  2021. committed

  2022. infanticide in

  2023. killing all the

  2024. baby boys in

  2025. that region.

  2026. And in the

  2027. end, both

  2028. John and

  2029. Jesus, they

  2030. are martyred

  2031. coming, but

  2032. it's not

  2033. without conflict

  2034. or challenge.

  2035. And that's

  2036. why Jesus

  2037. confirms John

  2038. as the

  2039. foretold

  2040. Messiah.

  2041. And when he

  2042. does so, he

  2043. says, if you

  2044. are willing to

  2045. accept it,

  2046. knowing that

  2047. there will be

  2048. a cost.

  2049. But nonetheless,

  2050. the violence

  2051. that comes with

  2052. being a follower

  2053. of the

  2054. crucified Christ,

  2055. it doesn't

  2056. change the

  2057. reality of

  2058. who John

  2059. and Jesus

  2060. are.

  2061. It doesn't

  2062. change the

  2063. cold-hearted

  2064. reality of

  2065. their identities.

  2066. While John

  2067. isn't the

  2068. literal

  2069. reincarnation of

  2070. Elijah, Jesus

  2071. confirms that

  2072. John is the

  2073. spiritual Elijah,

  2074. foretold in

  2075. Malachi 4-5.

  2076. And that

  2077. passage was

  2078. well-known

  2079. throughout all

  2080. of Judea and

  2081. Israel.

  2082. Rabbis

  2083. quoted it

  2084. often, and

  2085. there was

  2086. eager anticipation

  2087. for the

  2088. Elijah to

  2089. come.

  2090. And when

  2091. Jesus is

  2092. defending and

  2093. vindicating

  2094. John here,

  2095. explaining who

  2096. John is,

  2097. that's also

  2098. because he's

  2099. making a

  2100. bold statement

  2101. about him

  2102. himself.

  2103. Because if

  2104. John is the

  2105. true prophesied

  2106. Elijah, that

  2107. means Jesus

  2108. was the true

  2109. prophesied

  2110. Messiah.

  2111. God, Jesus

  2112. and John, they

  2113. come as a

  2114. package deal.

  2115. You can't

  2116. have one without

  2117. the other.

  2118. So if you

  2119. believe in

  2120. John, you

  2121. must believe

  2122. in Jesus.

  2123. So now, because

  2124. of this

  2125. messenger, he

  2126. urges us,

  2127. Matthew

  2128. urges us,

  2129. Jesus

  2130. urges us,

  2131. believe that

  2132. he is the

  2133. Messiah.

  2134. Have no

  2135. doubt in

  2136. your mind.

  2137. God.

  2138. Although Jesus

  2139. points to his

  2140. work as clear

  2141. evidence of

  2142. who he is,

  2143. the reality

  2144. is that only

  2145. some, only

  2146. some will have

  2147. ears to hear

  2148. this.

  2149. And we'll

  2150. see a prime

  2151. example of this

  2152. in the very next

  2153. verses when he

  2154. speaks about the

  2155. wicked generation

  2156. of Israel who

  2157. reject him.

  2158. When he

  2159. describes them,

  2160. he draws this

  2161. analogy from

  2162. children who

  2163. are playing

  2164. in the market

  2165. place.

  2166. Like they do

  2167. today, kids

  2168. like to pretend

  2169. and play

  2170. after like

  2171. adults.

  2172. They play

  2173. house or

  2174. a restaurant.

  2175. And by

  2176. then they

  2177. played wedding

  2178. or funeral.

  2179. So here you

  2180. have some kids

  2181. eagerly saying

  2182. to another

  2183. group,

  2184. let's play

  2185. wedding.

  2186. We'll play

  2187. a happy tune

  2188. on the flutes

  2189. and you can

  2190. dance.

  2191. I'm going to

  2192. hear a,

  2193. meh,

  2194. I'm not

  2195. interested.

  2196. Okay,

  2197. well,

  2198. what about

  2199. funeral then?

  2200. We'll sing a

  2201. sad tune,

  2202. you can play

  2203. last morning.

  2204. Meh,

  2205. not,

  2206. not interested.

  2207. Could be

  2208. compared to

  2209. hosting a new

  2210. guest for

  2211. dinner.

  2212. You work

  2213. for hours

  2214. and hours

  2215. preparing a

  2216. delicious,

  2217. nutritious meal

  2218. to present

  2219. them.

  2220. And they

  2221. take one

  2222. bite and

  2223. say,

  2224. too spicy,

  2225. can you

  2226. do this?

  2227. Shoot,

  2228. okay,

  2229. my bad.

  2230. Let me

  2231. work on it

  2232. again.

  2233. Present the

  2234. dish.

  2235. After you make

  2236. it milder,

  2237. you'll need to

  2238. hear,

  2239. too mild.

  2240. I'm not going

  2241. to eat this.

  2242. Wow,

  2243. okay,

  2244. let me try

  2245. to get this

  2246. gold.

  2247. You'll be

  2248. allowed someone

  2249. to spice

  2250. this in.

  2251. Only then to

  2252. hear,

  2253. too salty.

  2254. Then,

  2255. too bland,

  2256. too sweet,

  2257. too acidic,

  2258. too hot,

  2259. too cold.

  2260. Jesus is

  2261. using figurative

  2262. language to

  2263. show that

  2264. there is

  2265. nothing that

  2266. this wicked,

  2267. skeptical

  2268. generation would

  2269. accept.

  2270. They're always

  2271. moving the

  2272. gold coast.

  2273. They're like

  2274. the people who

  2275. make faith

  2276. conditional.

  2277. And you

  2278. likely know

  2279. that.

  2280. And you've

  2281. heard these

  2282. things.

  2283. They say

  2284. things like,

  2285. no,

  2286. I'll follow

  2287. Jesus.

  2288. And I'll

  2289. go to

  2290. church

  2291. only if

  2292. I get

  2293. this job.

  2294. I get

  2295. married.

  2296. I make

  2297. more money.

  2298. My friends

  2299. go to

  2300. church.

  2301. The list

  2302. of excuses

  2303. go on

  2304. and on.

  2305. Then God

  2306. gives them

  2307. these things,

  2308. but they're

  2309. again moving

  2310. the gold

  2311. post.

  2312. You can

  2313. follow Jesus'

  2314. argument

  2315. clearly here.

  2316. John,

  2317. who's

  2318. eating

  2319. locusts

  2320. and

  2321. honey,

  2322. he mirrors

  2323. a sorrowful

  2324. ascetic

  2325. diet like

  2326. that of

  2327. someone

  2328. mourning.

  2329. And that

  2330. extreme

  2331. asceticism

  2332. and devotion

  2333. to God,

  2334. it doesn't

  2335. barter any

  2336. attention or

  2337. respect from

  2338. the Jews,

  2339. but harsh

  2340. rejection,

  2341. calling him

  2342. demon-possessed.

  2343. That's a

  2344. really harsh

  2345. rejection.

  2346. then what

  2347. about Jesus

  2348. then?

  2349. He came

  2350. eating and

  2351. drinking.

  2352. If they

  2353. didn't like

  2354. John's

  2355. asceticism,

  2356. then surely

  2357. they'd like

  2358. Jesus.

  2359. But no,

  2360. they call

  2361. Jesus a

  2362. glutton,

  2363. a drunkard,

  2364. a friend of

  2365. tax collectors

  2366. and sinners.

  2367. This wicked

  2368. flesh is

  2369. impossible to

  2370. please.

  2371. And you

  2372. know,

  2373. we often

  2374. think that

  2375. Jesus is a

  2376. hard to

  2377. please,

  2378. Master.

  2379. But in

  2380. reality,

  2381. as we

  2382. observe,

  2383. Jesus was

  2384. very,

  2385. very kind

  2386. to doubting

  2387. John.

  2388. It's not

  2389. Jesus who

  2390. is hard to

  2391. please,

  2392. but it's

  2393. this wicked

  2394. generation.

  2395. More than

  2396. anything,

  2397. they are

  2398. proud,

  2399. full of

  2400. themselves.

  2401. They think

  2402. that they

  2403. have a

  2404. discerning

  2405. eye to

  2406. be able to

  2407. see the

  2408. spiritual

  2409. truth about

  2410. John and

  2411. Jesus'

  2412. ministers,

  2413. when in

  2414. fact they

  2415. are the

  2416. ones that

  2417. are utterly

  2418. blind.

  2419. rest assured

  2420. there are

  2421. those in

  2422. your life

  2423. that you

  2424. will evangelize

  2425. to who

  2426. will simply

  2427. not accept

  2428. the message

  2429. of the

  2430. gospel.

  2431. And when

  2432. we're

  2433. rejected,

  2434. our first

  2435. instinct is

  2436. to question,

  2437. did I

  2438. share that

  2439. right?

  2440. When our

  2441. evangelism

  2442. efforts were

  2443. shut down,

  2444. we wondered

  2445. did we

  2446. share that

  2447. at the

  2448. right time,

  2449. the right

  2450. content,

  2451. right tone?

  2452. It's

  2453. often not

  2454. because of

  2455. you.

  2456. The

  2457. Spirit hasn't

  2458. worked on

  2459. their thoughts,

  2460. softening

  2461. them.

  2462. They will

  2463. be just

  2464. like these

  2465. heart-hearted

  2466. children.

  2467. So keep

  2468. evangelizing

  2469. boldly,

  2470. not worried

  2471. about whether

  2472. you're getting

  2473. it perfectly

  2474. right.

  2475. Because even

  2476. when the

  2477. responses to

  2478. our evangelism

  2479. is mixed,

  2480. the truth

  2481. remains clear.

  2482. wisdom is

  2483. justified by

  2484. her deeds.

  2485. We all

  2486. know the

  2487. same,

  2488. actions speak

  2489. louder than

  2490. words.

  2491. And if

  2492. John is

  2493. faithfully

  2494. preparing the

  2495. life for the

  2496. Messiah,

  2497. and Jesus

  2498. is performing

  2499. miracle after

  2500. miracle,

  2501. helping people,

  2502. confirming that

  2503. he is the

  2504. Messiah,

  2505. their actions

  2506. justify themselves

  2507. in their

  2508. plans.

  2509. God.

  2510. So because

  2511. of his

  2512. ministry,

  2513. because of

  2514. his messenger,

  2515. they should

  2516. have believed

  2517. that Jesus

  2518. is the

  2519. Messiah.

  2520. They should

  2521. have repented

  2522. of their

  2523. sins.

  2524. But because

  2525. of their

  2526. unbelief and

  2527. refusal to

  2528. repent,

  2529. Jesus begins

  2530. to denounce

  2531. all their

  2532. sins.

  2533. Specifically,

  2534. the towns

  2535. Chorazin,

  2536. Bethsaida,

  2537. and Capernaum,

  2538. which were the

  2539. hometowns of some

  2540. of the

  2541. disciples,

  2542. and a

  2543. home base

  2544. for Jesus'

  2545. ministry for

  2546. some time.

  2547. That means

  2548. that Jesus

  2549. performed many,

  2550. many mighty

  2551. works in

  2552. their midst.

  2553. But like

  2554. these impossible

  2555. to please

  2556. children,

  2557. they are too

  2558. obstinate,

  2559. too blind

  2560. to see the

  2561. truth.

  2562. In fact,

  2563. Jesus claims

  2564. that even

  2565. Tyre and

  2566. Sidon,

  2567. which were

  2568. the leading

  2569. cities of

  2570. Phemnesia,

  2571. a pagan,

  2572. idol-worshiping

  2573. nation,

  2574. that they

  2575. would have

  2576. been quicker.

  2577. They would

  2578. have been

  2579. quicker to

  2580. come to

  2581. repentance.

  2582. And these

  2583. are nations

  2584. that prophets

  2585. frequently

  2586. rebuked and

  2587. condemned all

  2588. throughout the

  2589. Old Testament

  2590. scriptures.

  2591. This is such

  2592. a harsh

  2593. rebuke.

  2594. The Jews

  2595. were especially

  2596. proud to call

  2597. themselves the

  2598. people of God,

  2599. right, because

  2600. they have the

  2601. oracles of God.

  2602. They think that

  2603. they are going

  2604. to be exalted

  2605. to heaven.

  2606. We read that

  2607. in verse 23,

  2608. when in reality

  2609. they are the

  2610. ones that

  2611. would be

  2612. condemned

  2613. to hell.

  2614. For the

  2615. idolatrous,

  2616. impious,

  2617. pagans were

  2618. more righteous

  2619. than they.

  2620. Even the land

  2621. of Sodom,

  2622. the notorious

  2623. city known

  2624. for its wickedness,

  2625. for its sexual

  2626. immorality,

  2627. that was judged

  2628. by fire and

  2629. brimstone,

  2630. even Sodom

  2631. would have

  2632. gone to

  2633. the earth.

  2634. So because

  2635. they did not

  2636. repent,

  2637. despite

  2638. noticing

  2639. miracle

  2640. after miracle,

  2641. Jesus

  2642. pronounces a

  2643. harsher

  2644. judgment

  2645. on these

  2646. cities.

  2647. It's a

  2648. sobering

  2649. reality.

  2650. The parable

  2651. of Luke 12

  2652. teaches a

  2653. similar lesson.

  2654. In that

  2655. parable,

  2656. a master

  2657. sets a

  2658. servant over

  2659. his household

  2660. while he's

  2661. away.

  2662. When he

  2663. returns,

  2664. the standard

  2665. of judgment

  2666. is in

  2667. accordance to

  2668. their level

  2669. of knowledge.

  2670. Jesus

  2671. says,

  2672. everyone to

  2673. whom much

  2674. was given,

  2675. of him

  2676. much will

  2677. be required.

  2678. And from

  2679. him to

  2680. whom he

  2681. trusted

  2682. much,

  2683. they will

  2684. demand

  2685. more.

  2686. Simply

  2687. put,

  2688. the more

  2689. you're

  2690. given,

  2691. the more

  2692. you're

  2693. responsible

  2694. for.

  2695. I

  2696. would

  2697. not be

  2698. a

  2699. faithful

  2700. her

  2701. of

  2702. God's

  2703. word

  2704. if I

  2705. didn't

  2706. properly

  2707. transmit

  2708. this

  2709. point

  2710. to

  2711. you,

  2712. friends.

  2713. If you've

  2714. heard the

  2715. gospel of

  2716. Jesus Christ,

  2717. there will be

  2718. a greater

  2719. punishment

  2720. you'd

  2721. face if

  2722. you reject

  2723. the gospel

  2724. and refuse

  2725. to repent

  2726. of your

  2727. sins.

  2728. So if

  2729. you're here

  2730. today and

  2731. you haven't

  2732. confessed the

  2733. name of

  2734. Jesus,

  2735. make no

  2736. delay.

  2737. Make

  2738. today the

  2739. day of

  2740. repentance.

  2741. With the

  2742. knowledge of

  2743. the gospel

  2744. today,

  2745. you now

  2746. have the

  2747. responsibility

  2748. to respond.

  2749. But it's

  2750. not just

  2751. responsibility.

  2752. It's not

  2753. just obligation.

  2754. It's not

  2755. just fear

  2756. that should

  2757. motivate you

  2758. to believe

  2759. in the

  2760. gospel.

  2761. we ought

  2762. to be

  2763. motivated

  2764. by

  2765. grace,

  2766. his

  2767. kindness.

  2768. Romans 2,

  2769. 4 says,

  2770. it is

  2771. God's

  2772. kindness

  2773. that leads

  2774. us to

  2775. repentance.

  2776. To see

  2777. this in

  2778. our very

  2779. passage,

  2780. this kindness

  2781. of God,

  2782. goodness,

  2783. compassion,

  2784. grace,

  2785. these are the

  2786. things that

  2787. apply to

  2788. Jesus'

  2789. ministry.

  2790. people.

  2791. Remember,

  2792. even

  2793. John the

  2794. Baptist

  2795. didn't

  2796. expect

  2797. Jesus

  2798. to be

  2799. this

  2800. merciful.

  2801. For God

  2802. sent his

  2803. one and

  2804. only son

  2805. to give

  2806. sight to

  2807. the blind,

  2808. strength to

  2809. the lame,

  2810. cleansing to

  2811. the leper,

  2812. hearing to

  2813. the death,

  2814. life to the

  2815. dead,

  2816. and to preach

  2817. good news to

  2818. the poor.

  2819. He, of

  2820. course,

  2821. did that all

  2822. physically,

  2823. do.

  2824. But even

  2825. more importantly,

  2826. he has done

  2827. that spiritually

  2828. for the least

  2829. of us in the

  2830. kingdom of

  2831. heaven by

  2832. dying on

  2833. our behalf

  2834. and making

  2835. atonement for

  2836. our sins.

  2837. John and

  2838. the rest of

  2839. the Old

  2840. Testament

  2841. saints,

  2842. they didn't

  2843. understand God's

  2844. serious plan

  2845. to save

  2846. sinners near and

  2847. far, Jew

  2848. and Gentile.

  2849. We, you

  2850. covenant people

  2851. of God,

  2852. know, we

  2853. know this

  2854. good news,

  2855. that despite

  2856. how good

  2857. Jesus was,

  2858. he died a

  2859. sinner's death,

  2860. beaten,

  2861. naked,

  2862. humiliated.

  2863. Why?

  2864. It was

  2865. because of

  2866. his death,

  2867. his resurrection,

  2868. that we

  2869. now have

  2870. life.

  2871. And that's

  2872. good news.

  2873. That is

  2874. the greatest

  2875. news for

  2876. all those

  2877. who have

  2878. doubted God.

  2879. It's not

  2880. just those

  2881. who have

  2882. doubted God

  2883. intellectually

  2884. who need

  2885. God's help

  2886. and mercy.

  2887. You might

  2888. not struggle

  2889. with the

  2890. intellectual

  2891. side of

  2892. doubt,

  2893. questioning

  2894. the existence

  2895. of God

  2896. or the

  2897. reliability

  2898. of the

  2899. scriptures.

  2900. But in

  2901. one sense,

  2902. every sin

  2903. that we

  2904. commit is

  2905. because we

  2906. doubt God

  2907. and his

  2908. promises.

  2909. In fact,

  2910. the very

  2911. first sin

  2912. of all

  2913. humanity

  2914. that

  2915. badly

  2916. commits

  2917. before they

  2918. even put

  2919. their lips

  2920. onto the

  2921. forbidden

  2922. fruit is

  2923. to doubt

  2924. God in

  2925. their hearts.

  2926. It's an

  2927. unclean lack

  2928. faith that

  2929. overflowed

  2930. than

  2931. ours

  2932. to sin.

  2933. So,

  2934. come,

  2935. come you

  2936. all.

  2937. Repent.

  2938. Jesus

  2939. wants all

  2940. to come

  2941. to repentance.

  2942. And he

  2943. stands

  2944. at the

  2945. ready

  2946. to save

  2947. you.

  2948. Let no

  2949. shame

  2950. hinder you

  2951. for even

  2952. the sins

  2953. of Sodom,

  2954. even the

  2955. sins of

  2956. fire and

  2957. Sodom,

  2958. Jesus

  2959. was ready

  2960. sitting at

  2961. the edge

  2962. of the

  2963. seat to

  2964. forgive if

  2965. they had

  2966. just

  2967. repented.

  2968. That is

  2969. his humble,

  2970. gentle posture

  2971. towards you.

  2972. 1 John 1,

  2973. it's a famous

  2974. verse,

  2975. if you

  2976. confess your

  2977. sins.

  2978. There are

  2979. no qualifiers

  2980. to that

  2981. verse.

  2982. Any sin,

  2983. if you

  2984. confess your

  2985. sins,

  2986. he is

  2987. faithful and

  2988. just to

  2989. forgive us

  2990. our sins

  2991. and to

  2992. cleanse us

  2993. from all

  2994. unrighteousness.

  2995. There is

  2996. more mercy

  2997. in Christ

  2998. than there

  2999. is sin

  3000. in us.

  3001. So repent

  3002. of your

  3003. sin,

  3004. repent of

  3005. your doubts

  3006. and go

  3007. to Jesus.

  3008. Go to

  3009. Jesus,

  3010. the Messiah

  3011. who has

  3012. come to

  3013. save the

  3014. world.

  3015. Go to

  3016. Jesus as

  3017. you are,

  3018. whatever

  3019. place you

  3020. are spiritually.

  3021. Doubts,

  3022. sin and

  3023. all,

  3024. go to

  3025. Jesus,

  3026. flee to

  3027. him.

  3028. Don't

  3029. stop.

  3030. Don't

  3031. give up.

  3032. Keep

  3033. pursuing

  3034. and keep

  3035. seeking

  3036. him.

  3037. That you

  3038. will

  3039. persevere

  3040. so that

  3041. you can

  3042. believe

  3043. on the

  3044. name of

  3045. Jesus

  3046. Christ

  3047. for the

  3048. salvation

  3049. of your

  3050. soul.

  3051. And as

  3052. I wrap up

  3053. this sermon,

  3054. I'm happy,

  3055. I'm happy to

  3056. share that

  3057. this friend

  3058. from college,

  3059. he exemplified

  3060. this kind of

  3061. perseverance.

  3062. Although he

  3063. left school

  3064. within

  3065. unsure about

  3066. his faith,

  3067. struggling through

  3068. gaps, he

  3069. never stopped.

  3070. He never

  3071. stopped seeking

  3072. Jesus.

  3073. Though in

  3074. college there

  3075. were times

  3076. where he

  3077. wanted to

  3078. throw in

  3079. the towel

  3080. and I

  3081. had to

  3082. talk him

  3083. off the

  3084. bridge,

  3085. metaphorically.

  3086. But he

  3087. never stopped

  3088. pursuing a

  3089. faith that

  3090. sought

  3091. understanding.

  3092. And he

  3093. is now

  3094. growing and

  3095. thriving as a

  3096. believer,

  3097. an active

  3098. member of

  3099. a church.

  3100. And I

  3101. praise God

  3102. for this

  3103. brother,

  3104. in particular

  3105. because of

  3106. God's amazing

  3107. providence.

  3108. In the past

  3109. year he's

  3110. played such a

  3111. huge role in

  3112. a close

  3113. family member

  3114. of his

  3115. journey to

  3116. faith.

  3117. One that I've

  3118. been praying

  3119. for for a

  3120. decade.

  3121. God has

  3122. used it in

  3123. such a

  3124. powerful,

  3125. powerful way

  3126. faith and I'm

  3127. so thankful

  3128. to God

  3129. for him.

  3130. Thankful to

  3131. God and I

  3132. can't wait to

  3133. worship for

  3134. all eternity

  3135. with him and

  3136. his close

  3137. family.

  3138. So like my

  3139. friend, like

  3140. John

  3141. Baptist, let's

  3142. pursue a

  3143. faith, a

  3144. safe

  3145. understanding by

  3146. bringing our

  3147. doubts to

  3148. God and

  3149. repenting for

  3150. forgiveness of

  3151. our sins.

  3152. Let's pray.

  3153. Lord, we

  3154. are

  3155. humbled

  3156. and are

  3157. amazed of

  3158. your grace and

  3159. kindness that

  3160. saves us

  3161. doubting

  3162. us sweet

  3163. sinners.

  3164. that you

  3165. invite us to

  3166. come again

  3167. and again,

  3168. even when we

  3169. question you

  3170. and you give

  3171. us no reason

  3172. to question

  3173. you.

  3174. We question

  3175. you and you

  3176. answer so

  3177. gently,

  3178. so lovingly.

  3179. So please

  3180. help us to

  3181. run to you,

  3182. to cling to

  3183. you.

  3184. Thank you.

  3185. you are all

  3186. that we need.

  3187. Give us

  3188. more of you,

  3189. Lord Jesus.

  3190. In Jesus' name

  3191. we pray.

  3192. Amen.
