  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. For those of you who don't know, my name is Andrew Rimm.

  3. ! I am one of the pastoral interns here at Trinity Cambridge Church.

  4. ! If you guys could please turn with me now to Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  5. Matthew chapter 12, verse 38 to 50.

    Matthew 12:38–50

  6. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  7. Lord, more than ever, in our time and culture, in this generation, we need you.

  8. We need your word to be permeating throughout our lives.

  9. We need your word to be dictating how we can live a faithful life to you

  10. in the face of all the darkness and unbelief around us, Lord.

  11. So we ask you, God, by the power of your Holy Spirit, won't you illuminate this passage to us, Lord?

  12. Give us eyes to see, ears to hear, hearts to know.

  13. That even amongst this generation of evil that we live in, you are still good.

  14. You are greater than all, and you are worthy to be praised.

  15. Won't you be glorified?

  16. Won't you be magnified in the preaching of your word?

  17. In Jesus' name we pray.

  18. Amen.

  19. Would you please stand with me for the reading?

  20. That does remind me, if any of you don't have a Bible and would like one,

  21. please raise your hand and we'll try to get a copy for you, for your keeping.

  22. Matthew chapter 12, verse 38 to 50.

    Matthew 12:38–50

  23. Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying,

  24. Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.

  25. But he answered them,

  26. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign,

  27. but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

  28. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish,

  29. so will the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

  30. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it,

  31. for they repented at the preaching of Jonah.

  32. And behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

  33. The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it,

  34. for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

  35. And behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

  36. When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person,

  37. it passes through waterless places seeking rest but finds none.

  38. And then it says,

  39. I will return to my house from which I came.

  40. And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order.

  41. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits, more evil than itself,

  42. and they enter and dwell there,

  43. and the last state of that person is worse than the first.

  44. So also will it be with this evil generation.

  45. While he was still speaking to the people,

  46. behold, his mother and his brother stood outside asking to speak to him.

  47. But he replied to the man who told him,

  48. Who is my mother?

  49. And who are my brothers?

  50. And stretching out his hand toward his disciples,

  51. he said,

  52. Here are my mother and my brothers.

  53. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven

  54. is my brother and sister and mother.

  55. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  56. You may be seated.

  57. Amen.

  58. Growing up, my brothers and I,

  59. my younger brothers and I,

  60. were all classically trained in music.

  61. I played the cello.

  62. My younger brother plays the violin.

  63. And his twin brother plays the viola.

  64. And throughout my childhood,

  65. my mom would schedule practice time during the day.

  66. And we would go into our respective rooms

  67. and for two hours practice our instruments.

  68. My mom would be around the house taking care of chores.

  69. And every once in a while,

  70. like a prison guard,

  71. she would open our doors

  72. and check to make sure that we were practicing.

  73. But my brothers and I had a little secret.

  74. While we were practicing,

  75. we would have our phones or our iPods

  76. on our music stands.

  77. And we would watch cartoons

  78. and YouTube videos while we were practicing

  79. or when we were taking a break.

  80. My brothers and I had another little secret.

  81. We had unspoken understanding,

  82. a code,

  83. that we would send signs to one another,

  84. some sort of signal,

  85. if we sensed that our mom

  86. was coming to check in on us.

  87. We confessed this on my wedding day to my parents.

  88. And my mom was flabbergasted.

  89. Sometimes it would be a quick text.

  90. Yo, mom.

  91. Quickly, put away the phone.

  92. Start playing through my Suzuki book.

  93. Other times,

  94. a sharp cough

  95. from the next room over.

  96. Away goes my phone

  97. and I wear my Measure 24 box suite.

  98. You know?

  99. And other times,

  100. I'd hear the hurried clatter of bows.

  101. And my brothers would quickly start playing.

  102. And that would be a clear indication.

  103. Mom's right around the corner.

  104. And so my last resort move,

  105. in that hurriedness,

  106. I'd pretend to tune my cello

  107. with a face of clear concentration

  108. of such a difficult task

  109. of tuning a cello.

  110. But over time,

  111. I started to get cocky.

  112. I started to get overconfident

  113. in my own ability.

  114. I felt like I didn't need

  115. my brother's signs and signals anymore.

  116. And like a Jedi using the Force,

  117. I could sense my mom's presence

  118. and know when to start back up

  119. with my cello practice.

  120. But then one day,

  121. my mom went out of the house

  122. to go buy some groceries

  123. while we were supposed to be

  124. in practice time.

  125. The house was dead silent

  126. because all three boys

  127. were lounging in their respective rooms

  128. on their phones.

  129. An hour passed,

  130. and suddenly,

  131. I got a message on my phone

  132. from one of my brothers.

  133. Yo,

  134. I think I saw mom's car with Pullen.

  135. I glanced out the window.

  136. I thought I saw a flash of white,

  137. but maybe that was just my imagination.

  138. Then another text popped up.

  139. I heard the garage door opening.

  140. I listen,

  141. and I hear a low rumbling.

  142. Eh,

  143. must be the laundry machine.

  144. In my mind,

  145. I thought,

  146. there had better be

  147. a legit sign,

  148. a legitimate sign

  149. that mom was home

  150. that I can see

  151. or tangibly hear.

  152. Else,

  153. I'm not believing my brothers.

  154. I got this.

  155. I can get away with this.

  156. Suddenly,

  157. I hear the clattering

  158. of my brother's bows,

  159. and they start playing

  160. their instruments again.

  161. And in my hubris,

  162. I thought to myself,

  163. they're just being paranoid.

  164. Suddenly,

  165. my mom opens the door,

  166. and she finds her eldest son

  167. lounging on the bed

  168. with a cello on the ground

  169. and an iPhone in hand,

  170. busted.

  171. In the end,

  172. my pride and my unbelief

  173. made me overlook

  174. the obvious

  175. and abundant signs

  176. that my mom

  177. was indeed home,

  178. and I paid dearly.

  179. What I share with you

  180. here, church,

  181. is a much sillier anecdote.

  182. But many of you guys

  183. probably have stories

  184. of your own,

  185. of similar circumstances

  186. of unbelief.

  187. Whether it's you

  188. or someone that you know

  189. who has felt skepticism,

  190. even when all the signs

  191. seem to point

  192. to the truth of the matter.

  193. But in our stubbornness,

  194. we refuse to admit the truth,

  195. and even when the evidence

  196. and signs stack up against us,

  197. we continue to be in denial.

  198. In our passage this morning,

  199. we encounter

  200. a more serious case

  201. of unbelief,

  202. even when the signs

  203. seem to overwhelmingly

  204. point to the truth.

  205. And that is the Pharisees

  206. and their contemporaries'

  207. denial of Jesus

  208. as the promised Messiah

  209. and the Son of God.

  210. Their measure of unbelief

  211. leads Jesus to call them

  212. an evil and adulterous generation,

  213. and one that continues

  214. to become worse and worse

  215. in their spiritual condition.

  216. Church,

  217. the evil generation,

  218. that streak of unbelief

  219. that Jesus calls out

  220. in our passage,

  221. is prevalent in our age now.

  222. More than ever,

  223. we're surrounded by a culture

  224. of skepticism,

  225. skepticism of the gospel,

  226. and the culture demands

  227. signs from the Christian faith.

  228. Prove,

  229. prove it to us

  230. that Jesus is real,

  231. that he's the way,

  232. the truth,

  233. and the life,

  234. as you guys say,

  235. that he really did die

  236. and rise from the grave.

  237. But this generation,

  238. they often demand

  239. to see these signs

  240. not because they want

  241. to believe,

  242. but because they want

  243. to confirm

  244. their unbelief.

  245. I was right along,

  246. all along,

  247. it's not true.

  248. As Christians

  249. and as bearers

  250. of the gospel,

  251. church,

  252. we need to be aware

  253. of this evil generation

  254. of unbelief,

  255. and we need to rely

  256. on the power

  257. of the Holy Spirit

  258. to guide us

  259. in not falling into

  260. that temptation

  261. of unbelief

  262. and reminding ourselves

  263. that there is a generation

  264. that is far better

  265. than this evil one,

  266. and that's the generation

  267. that Jesus calls

  268. his family.

  269. And so this is my main point

  270. this morning.

  271. As brothers and sisters

  272. of Christ,

  273. be set apart

  274. from this evil generation

  275. of unbelief.

  276. I'll touch on three points

  277. this morning.

  278. First,

  279. the sign for an evil generation.

  280. Second,

  281. the worsened state

  282. of the evil generation.

  283. And third,

  284. the family of Jesus.

  285. Throughout the gospel

  286. of Matthew,

  287. Matthew's been recording

  288. various miracles

  289. Jesus performed

  290. since he began

  291. this ministry

  292. in chapter 4.

  293. Already,

  294. he's healed diseases

  295. and afflictions

  296. and cast out demons

  297. several times

  298. within his ministry.

  299. Even within our chapter,

  300. chapter 12,

  301. Jesus has healed

  302. a man with a withered hand

  303. and healed

  304. a demon-oppressed man

  305. of his blindness

  306. and muteness

  307. with great authority,

  308. causing many to wonder,

  309. is this the Messiah,

  310. the Son of God?

  311. But the scribes

  312. and Pharisees,

  313. out of selfish ambition

  314. and jealousy,

  315. continued to scorn Jesus

  316. and criticize his ministry.

  317. They accused Jesus

  318. of operating in his miracles

  319. of healing and exorcism

  320. by the power of Beelzebul,

  321. the prince of demons,

  322. as we saw in our previous passage.

  323. Jesus proceeded

  324. to rebuke them

  325. of blaspheming

  326. the Holy Spirit

  327. in their words,

  328. showing the wickedness

  329. and unbelief

  330. in their hearts.

  331. And this sets the stage

  332. for where we are now.

  333. Verse 38,

  334. the Pharisees replied

  335. to Jesus by telling him,

  336. Teacher,

  337. we wish to see

  338. a sign from you.

  339. The Pharisees wanted

  340. to see another sign

  341. from Jesus

  342. as if everything

  343. that happened before,

  344. all those healings,

  345. all those exorcisms,

  346. meant nothing to them.

  347. Fine, teacher,

  348. if you say

  349. that you're not

  350. of Beelzebul

  351. and you say

  352. that you are of God,

  353. show us a sign.

  354. Our own people

  355. have performed exorcisms.

  356. Our own people

  357. have been able

  358. to heal people

  359. in the past.

  360. Show us something different.

  361. Prove your worth.

  362. Their skepticism

  363. was as much

  364. as if we were to

  365. ambush a magician

  366. after the magic show,

  367. demanding him

  368. to show us real magic

  369. now that all the setups,

  370. now that all the lights,

  371. now that all the smoke

  372. has died away.

  373. But Jesus isn't having that.

  374. He wasn't going

  375. to pull off a miracle

  376. like some cheap party trick

  377. in front of the Pharisees

  378. at their whim

  379. in their bidding.

  380. And his response

  381. to them

  382. is sharp and clear.

  383. Verse 39,

  384. an evil and adulterous

  385. generation

  386. seeks for a sign,

  387. but no sign

  388. will be given to it

  389. except the sign

  390. of the prophet Jonah.

  391. Let's focus

  392. on the first part

  393. of Jesus' reply.

  394. An evil and adulterous

  395. generation

  396. seeks for a sign.

  397. It's interesting

  398. who Jesus addresses

  399. as a whole.

  400. He could have just said,

  401. you evil and adulterous

  402. scribes and Pharisees

  403. seek a sign.

  404. But instead,

  405. he expands the scope

  406. of his rebuke

  407. to the whole generation.

  408. An evil and adulterous

  409. generation.

  410. Jesus calls this generation

  411. evil because they seek

  412. a sign out of malicious intent.

  413. They don't ask for a sign

  414. so that they can believe

  415. in the Messiah,

  416. but rather to destroy him.

  417. Jesus calls this generation

  418. adulterous because

  419. they're seeking a sign

  420. shows their faithlessness

  421. in the Lord God.

  422. That they desire

  423. to put their trust

  424. in what they see

  425. with their own eyes

  426. and not in what

  427. the Lord had promised.

  428. It's spiritual adultery.

  429. As an aside,

  430. what Jesus is not saying here

  431. is that it's evil

  432. or adulterous

  433. to seek for a sign

  434. from the Lord.

  435. All throughout the Bible,

  436. God gave signs to people

  437. like Moses and Gideon

  438. to stir them in their faith

  439. amidst doubt and fear.

  440. In our own context,

  441. we pray to God

  442. to show us a sign,

  443. whether that's through

  444. answering our prayer requests,

  445. placing supernatural peace

  446. in our hearts

  447. about a decision to be made,

  448. or comfort amidst

  449. our sorrows

  450. or supernatural gifts

  451. of the Spirit

  452. such as healing or prophecy.

  453. What sets us,

  454. Moses and Gideon,

  455. apart from these Pharisees

  456. and scribes

  457. is that we ask for God

  458. to show his power

  459. to stir up our faith

  460. rather than to fuel

  461. our biased unbelief

  462. to ultimately scorn

  463. and reject Jesus

  464. like the Pharisees did.

  465. That is what this generation

  466. that Jesus condemns

  467. chooses to do.

  468. This isn't Jesus'

  469. first condemnation

  470. of this generation,

  471. nor will it be his last

  472. throughout the Gospel of Matthew.

  473. In Matthew chapter 11,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  474. Jesus calls out

  475. this generation

  476. as being like children

  477. who play the flute

  478. and sing a dirge,

  479. forcing their playmates

  480. to play along

  481. by their rules

  482. of their games.

  483. The Pharisees in Matthew 11

  484. were rebuked

  485. for being like these children,

  486. moving the goalposts

  487. of righteousness

  488. to fit their own agendas

  489. and desires.

  490. They called John the Baptist

  491. demonized for fasting,

  492. and yet they called Jesus

  493. a glutton and drunkard

  494. for eating and drinking

  495. out of their unbelief

  496. and hypocrisy.

  497. Later in Matthew chapter 23,

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  498. Jesus again condemns

  499. the Pharisees and scribes

  500. with seven woes

  501. for their hypocrisy

  502. and unbelief,

  503. for imposing laws

  504. which they themselves

  505. were not following,

  506. for neglecting weightier matters

  507. of the law

  508. like mercy and justice,

  509. and instead focusing

  510. on external cleanliness

  511. when deep inside

  512. they were stained

  513. with idolatry of the self

  514. and lawlessness.

  515. All these things,

  516. Jesus pronounces,

  517. will incur great judgment

  518. upon this generation.

  519. Matthew 23, 36.

  520. Jesus is directly addressing

  521. the Pharisees

  522. who confront him,

  523. but he's also saying

  524. that there are more

  525. beyond this group

  526. of conspirators

  527. who participate

  528. in the same wrongdoings

  529. of unbelief

  530. and unfaithfulness.

  531. The Pharisees and scribes

  532. are simply

  533. the chief representatives

  534. of a whole generation.

  535. An evil and adulterous generation

  536. that refuses to believe

  537. in Jesus

  538. as the promised Messiah.

  539. And spoiler alert,

  540. Jesus is very worried

  541. about this whole generation

  542. is fulfilled.

  543. Because of this generation's

  544. unbelief and wickedness,

  545. Jesus was turned over

  546. to Pontius Pilate.

  547. He was demanded

  548. to be crucified

  549. by the Jewish leaders

  550. and the crowds of people.

  551. This whole generation

  552. rejected Jesus

  553. by scorning his words,

  554. spurning his miracles,

  555. and crucifying him

  556. and putting him to death.

  557. And so Jesus condemns

  558. this generation

  559. and declares

  560. no sign

  561. will be given

  562. to this evil generation

  563. except

  564. the sign

  565. of the prophet Jonah.

  566. What then

  567. is the sign

  568. of the prophet Jonah?

  569. Let's look at

  570. Jesus' explanation

  571. of the sign.

  572. Verse 40.

  573. For just as Jonah

  574. was three days

  575. and three nights

  576. in the belly

  577. of the great fish,

  578. so will the Son of Man

  579. be three days

  580. and three nights

  581. in the heart

  582. of the earth.

  583. The prophet Jonah

  584. in the Old Testament

  585. was appointed by God

  586. to warn the city

  587. of Nineveh

  588. that judgment

  589. was coming upon them

  590. from their Lord

  591. for their wickedness.

  592. But Jonah instead

  593. fled from God's presence.

  594. God caused

  595. a great storm

  596. to torment Jonah's ship

  597. and appointed

  598. a great fish

  599. to swallow up Jonah

  600. for three days

  601. and three nights

  602. before God caused

  603. a fish

  604. to spit Jonah

  605. onto dry land.

  606. Jonah then

  607. heeded God's command

  608. and proclaimed

  609. God's judgment

  610. to the Ninevites

  611. and these Gentile

  612. Ninevites believed

  613. and feared the Lord

  614. and repented

  615. of their wickedness

  616. and they were saved.

  617. The sign of Jonah

  618. that Jesus refers to

  619. is a symbol

  620. of Jesus'

  621. own death

  622. and resurrection.

  623. Like Jonah's

  624. deliverance

  625. from the fish's belly

  626. after three days

  627. and three nights,

  628. Jesus will be

  629. crucified

  630. and buried

  631. for three days

  632. and three nights

  633. before doing

  634. something no one else,

  635. no other Jewish

  636. healer or exorcist

  637. could have done.

  638. He resurrected

  639. from death

  640. to life.

  641. And this

  642. would be

  643. that unmistakable sign

  644. given to the generation

  645. that proves

  646. Jesus' authority

  647. as the Son of God

  648. and the promised Messiah.

  649. We have a very smart

  650. congregation here

  651. and you may have heard

  652. three days

  653. and three nights

  654. and you may be

  655. doing the math

  656. and there may be

  657. a little bit

  658. of confusion now.

  659. If we hold the view

  660. that Jesus died

  661. on what we call

  662. Good Friday,

  663. a full three days

  664. and three nights,

  665. 72 hours,

  666. would not get us

  667. to Resurrection Sunday,

  668. more of a Resurrection Monday.

  669. Or going the other way,

  670. if Jesus resurrected

  671. on what we call

  672. Resurrection Sunday,

  673. a full three days

  674. and three nights

  675. prior would bring us

  676. to a good Thursday.

  677. What we see here

  678. is that Jesus

  679. is using three days

  680. and three nights

  681. as an example

  682. of a Hebraic idiom,

  683. a figure of speech,

  684. where a day

  685. and a night

  686. can refer to just

  687. part of a full day

  688. and not necessarily

  689. a full 24-hour

  690. time frame.

  691. In the Resurrection account,

  692. what we call

  693. Good Friday,

  694. Holy Saturday,

  695. and Resurrection Sunday

  696. would count as

  697. three days

  698. and three nights,

  699. even if this time frame

  700. does not span

  701. that full 72 hours.

  702. It's similar to

  703. the way we say things like,

  704. I was at work all day,

  705. without actually meaning

  706. that we were in the office

  707. for a full 24-hour period.

  708. And so Jesus uses

  709. this Hebraic idiom,

  710. this figure of speech,

  711. as a typological representation.

  712. Just as Jonah

  713. was in the belly

  714. of the fish

  715. for three days

  716. and three nights

  717. before being spit up,

  718. so was Jesus

  719. in the realm of the dead

  720. for three days

  721. and three nights

  722. before He resurrected

  723. to life.

  724. Jesus' resurrection,

  725. then,

  726. would be that sign

  727. to the Pharisees

  728. and to the rest

  729. of the generation

  730. that Jesus is indeed

  731. the promised Messiah,

  732. the Son of David,

  733. and the Savior

  734. of the world

  735. to both Jews

  736. and Gentiles.

  737. And yet,

  738. even though Jesus

  739. has been proclaiming

  740. of God's kingdom to come

  741. and how this generation

  742. needs to repent

  743. and prepare

  744. for the kingdom at hand,

  745. the generation continues

  746. to not believe.

  747. And it's for this reason

  748. Jesus tells the Pharisees,

  749. the men of Nineveh

  750. will rise up

  751. at the judgment

  752. with this generation

  753. and condemn it,

  754. for they repented

  755. at the preaching of Jonah

  756. and behold,

  757. something greater

  758. than Jonah is here.

  759. If the Ninevites

  760. were able to receive

  761. the warnings

  762. of the prophet Jonah

  763. and reach the conclusion

  764. that they had to repent

  765. to the Lord,

  766. the Pharisees

  767. and their contemporaries

  768. should be even more

  769. cognizant of their sin

  770. and even more repentant

  771. toward the warnings

  772. of Jesus,

  773. who is far greater

  774. than Jonah.

  775. Jonah's proclamation

  776. was toward the salvation

  777. of one city,

  778. the one city of Nineveh,

  779. and yet Jesus' proclamation

  780. was toward the salvation

  781. of the whole world.

  782. But as we've seen

  783. over and over in Matthew,

  784. the Pharisees

  785. in this generation

  786. instead continue

  787. to be hardened

  788. in their hearts

  789. and continue

  790. in their unbelief,

  791. rejecting Jesus

  792. as that promised Messiah.

  793. Their lack of faith

  794. and unwillingness

  795. to receive Jesus

  796. is shameful

  797. compared to the response

  798. of repentance

  799. from the Ninevites.

  800. Nineveh,

  801. a city of Gentiles,

  802. repented to

  803. a mere mortal man's preaching.

  804. While the Pharisees

  805. and Jews,

  806. God's own covenant people,

  807. scoffed at the preaching

  808. of the Son of God,

  809. the one who is far greater

  810. than the prophet Jonah.

  811. Jesus presents his rebuke

  812. in another example

  813. in verse 42,

  814. the queen of the south,

  815. the queen of the kingdom

  816. of Sheba

  817. from 1 Kings chapter 10.

    1 Kings 10 chapter mention

  818. She was Gentile royalty,

  819. and yet when she heard

  820. of the great God-given wisdom

  821. that King Solomon possessed,

  822. she came from the ends

  823. of the earth

  824. to hear the wisdom

  825. of Solomon.

  826. The kingdom of Sheba

  827. is believed

  828. to have been located

  829. in what is today

  830. between Yemen

  831. and Ethiopia.

  832. The queen of the south,

  833. the queen of Sheba,

  834. would have had to travel

  835. up to 1,500 miles

  836. to arrive at Jerusalem

  837. to test Solomon

  838. with hard questions,

  839. and after questioning Solomon,

  840. the queen left,

  841. marveling at his display

  842. of godly wisdom,

  843. as 1 Kings 10 says.

  844. If the queen of Sheba

  845. was willing to go

  846. such great lengths,

  847. literally great lengths,

  848. over 1,000 miles,

  849. to consult the God-given

  850. wisdom of Solomon,

  851. the Pharisees

  852. and their contemporaries

  853. should all be

  854. all the more willing

  855. to heed the teachings

  856. and admonishments

  857. of Jesus,

  858. who is greater than Solomon,

  859. because he is the very wisdom

  860. of God,

  861. as proclaimed in

  862. 1 Corinthians 1,21,4.

  863. And yet again,

  864. the Pharisees

  865. in this generation

  866. are shameful

  867. and worthy

  868. to be condemned

  869. in their response

  870. to Jesus' teachings

  871. and his wisdom.

  872. Church,

  873. Jesus' warnings

  874. of this evil generation

  875. is not just limited

  876. to the Pharisees

  877. of Jesus' time.

  878. Here and now,

  879. this evil

  880. and adulterous generation

  881. is still in our midst.

  882. We're surrounded

  883. by many people

  884. who do not believe

  885. in the proclamation

  886. and wisdom of Jesus

  887. and many who are hostile

  888. towards the gospel

  889. and seek to quelch

  890. and destroy those

  891. who do believe in it,

  892. just as the Pharisees

  893. plotted

  894. for Jesus' destruction.

  895. We look at our time

  896. in culture today.

  897. With the rise of secularism

  898. and post-modern thought,

  899. more and more people

  900. see the Christian faith

  901. as oppressive

  902. and offensive

  903. to their current

  904. cultural sensibilities

  905. and they hurl insults

  906. and vitriol

  907. at those

  908. who still adhere

  909. to the teachings

  910. of God's word.

  911. All around the world,

  912. persecution of Christians

  913. continues to run rampant.

  914. I think of Nigeria

  915. where in this past year,

  916. thousands of Christians

  917. have been harassed,

  918. kidnapped,

  919. or martyred

  920. by extremist terrorist groups.

  921. And these persecutions

  922. have ramped up

  923. all the more

  924. in recent weeks.

  925. This past month in China,

  926. many pastors and leaders

  927. of the largest house church

  928. in China

  929. were arrested

  930. for illegally gathering

  931. for the sake

  932. of the gospel,

  933. including dear friends

  934. of some of my fellow

  935. seminary students.

  936. As Ed had mentioned

  937. last week,

  938. anti-conversion laws

  939. and Gar-Wafi,

  940. return home campaigns

  941. in India

  942. forcibly put Christians

  943. in societal disadvantages.

  944. Authorities don't bat an eye

  945. when churches

  946. and church members

  947. are beaten,

  948. ransacked,

  949. and taken advantage of.

  950. But even the smallest

  951. of gestures

  952. from a Christian

  953. will land them

  954. in prison.

  955. Jesus promised

  956. to the Pharisees

  957. that this evil generation

  958. that seeks for a sign

  959. will not receive anything

  960. except the sign

  961. of Jonah.

  962. We live amongst

  963. this generation today.

  964. And this generation

  965. has received

  966. that sign of Jonah

  967. in the death

  968. and resurrection

  969. of Jesus.

  970. Jesus has given

  971. this generation

  972. that sign

  973. proving his authority

  974. as the son of God.

  975. But people today,

  976. like the Pharisees,

  977. still don't believe.

  978. If anything,

  979. the evil generation

  980. is in a worse state

  981. than ever before

  982. because they've received

  983. the good news

  984. of the gospel,

  985. of Jesus' death

  986. and resurrection,

  987. and yet they continue

  988. in their unbelief

  989. and faithlessness.

  990. Church,

  991. we're in the midst

  992. of this evil generation

  993. all around us,

  994. but this generation

  995. still desperately needs

  996. to hear the gospel

  997. and have the Holy Spirit

  998. soften their hardened hearts

  999. to believe.

  1000. Jesus then returns

  1001. to the issue

  1002. that triggered

  1003. his rebuke

  1004. towards the Pharisees,

  1005. his exorcism

  1006. of the demon-possessed man

  1007. earlier in Matthew 12.

  1008. Jesus now presents

  1009. a parable

  1010. of an unclean spirit,

  1011. a demon

  1012. that has gone

  1013. out of a person.

  1014. He says in verses

  1015. 43 to 45

  1016. that the unclean spirit

  1017. wanders around

  1018. through waterless places,

  1019. places that are barren

  1020. and lifeless,

  1021. but is unable

1022. to find a resting place

  1023. before it concludes,

1024. I'll return to my house

  1025. from which I came.

  1026. The evil spirit

  1027. is referring

  1028. to the person

  1029. it had once demonized

  1030. as my house.

  1031. I'll just go back

  1032. to my house,

  1033. the person

1034. who I used to torment.

  1035. Pastor Charles Spurgeon

  1036. remarks about this

  1037. in his commentary.

  1038. His audacity,

  1039. Satan's audacity

  1040. is amazing.

  1041. Evidently,

  1042. he considers

  1043. that he has

  1044. the freehold

  1045. of man's nature

  1046. and can go

1047. and come at his pleasure

  1048. if Satan

  1049. quits a man

  1050. of his own will,

1051. he is sure to return

  1052. just when it suits

  1053. his purpose.

  1054. Only the divine force

  1055. which ejects him

  1056. can secure

  1057. his non-return.

  1058. When a house

  1059. is built,

  1060. when a house

  1061. is established,

  1062. it requires

  1063. an occupant.

  1064. A house

  1065. needs the Lord.

  1066. And in the case

  1067. of the human being,

  1068. that Lord

  1069. and occupant

  1070. is either

  1071. the Holy Spirit

  1072. or Satan.

  1073. There is no

  1074. neutral ground,

  1075. no empty house

  1076. that will remain

  1077. empty for long.

  1078. It's only by

  1079. the indwelling

  1080. of the Holy Spirit

  1081. in a person

  1082. that an evil spirit

  1083. that is cast out

  1084. cannot enter

  1085. to demonize

  1086. the person again.

  1087. And here lies

  1088. the problem

  1089. in Jesus' parable.

  1090. The demon

  1091. returns to the person

  1092. that it had once

  1093. resided in

  1094. and it finds

  1095. the house

  1096. empty,

  1097. swept,

  1098. and put

  1099. in order.

  1100. The house

  1101. or the person

  1102. is made empty

  1103. because the evil

  1104. spirit was cast out.

  1105. It's been cleaned up

  1106. while the unclean

  1107. spirit has been away.

  1108. Maybe the person

  1109. has reformed

  1110. their ways

  1111. from sin,

  1112. tidied their life

  1113. back in order,

  1114. but the house

  1115. remains

  1116. empty.

  1117. The house

  1118. has evicted

  1119. the evil spirit,

  1120. but it has not

  1121. been replaced

  1122. with the presence

  1123. of the Holy Spirit.

  1124. And as a result,

  1125. the evil spirit

  1126. is able to return

  1127. into this house

  1128. and not only

  1129. on its own,

  1130. but with seven

  1131. other spirits

  1132. more evil

  1133. than itself.

  1134. It invites

  1135. its friends

  1136. also to enter

  1137. so that they

  1138. may have

  1139. an even stronger

  1140. hold on their

  1141. victim,

  1142. so that it's

  1143. even more

  1144. difficult to cast

  1145. out these demons

  1146. from the person.

  1147. Without the Holy

  1148. Spirit residing

  1149. in the person

  1150. to prevent

  1151. re-entry of evil,

  1152. they're in a

  1153. worse state

  1154. than the first.

  1155. Through this

  1156. parable,

  1157. Jesus is referring

  1158. to the Pharisees

  1159. who claimed

  1160. to be able

  1161. to cast out

  1162. demons.

  1163. However,

  1164. these Pharisees

  1165. were merely

  1166. removing the

  1167. evil spirits

  1168. from the person

  1169. by legalistic

  1170. ritual,

  1171. and not by

  1172. the name

  1173. of Jesus

  1174. and the power

  1175. of the Holy

  1176. Spirit.

  1177. They were

  1178. leaving people

  1179. emptied and

  1180. cleansed

  1181. of the evil

  1182. spirit,

  1183. but only

  1184. for a little

  1185. while.

  1186. After a bit,

  1187. because the

  1188. Holy Spirit

  1189. is not the

  1190. present active

  1191. force dwelling

  1192. in and working

  1193. in the person's

  1194. life,

  1195. the person

  1196. will be filled

  1197. with an even

  1198. more evil

  1199. force and be

  1200. in an even

  1201. worse state.

  1202. The Pharisees'

  1203. work then

  1204. is futile,

  1205. and it's

  1206. perhaps even

  1207. more detrimental

  1208. to this person.

  1209. But Jesus'

  1210. parable is

  1211. also pointing

  1212. to an even

  1213. deeper heart

  1214. issue beneath

  1215. the matters

  1216. of exorcism,

  1217. and that is

  1218. the Pharisees

  1219. and this

  1220. generation's

  1221. persistent and

  1222. progressively

  1223. worsening state

  1224. of spiritual

  1225. unbelief.

  1226. This is why

  1227. Jesus applies

  1228. this parable

  1229. to them by

  1230. saying in

  1231. verse 45,

  1232. so also

  1233. will it be

  1234. with this

  1235. evil generation.

  1236. The Pharisees

  1237. and their

  1238. contemporaries

  1239. had witnessed

  1240. and heard

  1241. Jesus'

  1242. proclamation

  1243. of the

  1244. gospel.

  1245. They heard

  1246. Jesus pronounce

  1247. himself as

  1248. the fulfillment

  1249. of the law

  1250. and the prophets,

  1251. the same law

  1252. that bound

  1253. the Pharisees

  1254. and Jews

  1255. to sin and

  1256. death.

  1257. They saw

  1258. and witnessed

  1259. Jesus perform

  1260. miracles of

  1261. healing and

  1262. exorcism with

  1263. great authority.

  1264. They witnessed

  1265. the power of

  1266. the Holy Spirit

  1267. through Jesus,

  1268. and they were

  1269. invited by Jesus

  1270. to come to

  1271. him and to

  1272. believe in

  1273. the gospel

  1274. that grants

  1275. them true

  1276. rest.

  1277. And yet,

  1278. this evil

  1279. generation

  1280. persisted in

  1281. unbelief.

  1282. Though they

  1283. presented the

  1284. gospel by

  1285. Jesus,

  1286. the Pharisees

  1287. refused to

  1288. accept Jesus

  1289. as their

  1290. Messiah and

  1291. blasphemed

  1292. the Holy Spirit

  1293. by their

  1294. malicious

  1295. rejection of

  1296. Jesus as

  1297. the Son of

  1298. God.

  1299. Their rejection

  1300. of Jesus

  1301. means that

  1302. they reject

  1303. the Holy Spirit

  1304. from entering

  1305. into their

  1306. own hearts,

  1307. giving way

  1308. to Satan

  1309. to enter

  1310. and dwell

  1311. inside them.

  1312. And it's

  1313. for this

  1314. reason this

  1315. evil generation

  1316. will be in

  1317. a worse

  1318. state than

  1319. ever before,

  1320. because they

  1321. heard the

  1322. gospel and

  1323. had a chance

  1324. to receive

  1325. Jesus into

  1326. their hearts,

  1327. but they

  1328. actively chose

  1329. not to.

  1330. Instead,

  1331. letting the

  1332. sinister spirits

  1333. of unbelief

  1334. and self-righteousness

  1335. creep into and

  1336. take root into

  1337. their hearts,

  1338. hearts,

  1339. and they

  1340. will become

  1341. more and

  1342. more spiritually

  1343. corrupt.

  1344. Brothers and

  1345. sisters,

  1346. we need to

  1347. be filled

  1348. with the

  1349. Holy Spirit

  1350. in our lives.

  1351. We need the

  1352. Holy Spirit

  1353. in our lives

  1354. to be truly

  1355. set apart

  1356. from the

  1357. evil generation.

  1358. Satan is

  1359. sinister

  1360. in tricking us

  1361. into thinking

  1362. we can work

  1363. out our own

  1364. salvation apart

  1365. from the Holy

  1366. Spirit.

  1367. And Satan

  1368. is going to

  1369. use any

  1370. measure of

  1371. unbelief,

  1372. any measure

  1373. of self-righteousness,

  1374. any sense

  1375. of self-sufficiency

  1376. to take root

  1377. into our hearts

  1378. to influence us

  1379. away from

  1380. God's grace.

  1381. Look at the

  1382. Pharisees.

  1383. They thought

  1384. that they were

  1385. righteous by

  1386. pursuing

  1387. cleanliness

  1388. and moralism

  1389. and following

  1390. the law

  1391. scrupulously.

  1392. However,

  1393. when the

  1394. gospel was

  1395. presented before

  1396. them in the

  1397. person of

  1398. Jesus Christ,

  1399. they did

  1400. not receive

  1401. him out

  1402. of their

  1403. external

  1404. self-righteousness

  1405. and their

  1406. hearts were

  1407. hardened.

  1408. Their

  1409. cleansing

  1410. rituals,

  1411. their external

  1412. piety,

  1413. and their

  1414. strivings to

  1415. follow God's

  1416. commandments

  1417. by their

  1418. own efforts

  1419. was merely

  1420. their playing

  1421. the role

  1422. of a

  1423. housekeeper,

  1424. sweeping

  1425. and organizing

  1426. that empty

  1427. room in their

  1428. hearts,

  1429. unwittingly

  1430. preparing them

  1431. for the return

  1432. of the evil

  1433. spirits.

  1434. It's only

  1435. by confessing

  1436. our great

  1437. need for

  1438. Jesus,

  1439. our Lord

  1440. and Savior

  1441. and receiving

  1442. the Holy

  1443. Spirit in

  1444. our hearts

  1445. that we

  1446. can be

  1447. truly saved

  1448. from the

  1449. bondage of

  1450. sin and

  1451. sanctified toward

  1452. God rather

  1453. than being a

  1454. part of this

  1455. evil generation

  1456. that persists

  1457. in their sin

  1458. and their

  1459. unbelief.

  1460. for those of

  1461. you this

  1462. morning who

  1463. feel the

  1464. burden of

  1465. sin,

  1466. who feel

  1467. the temptation

  1468. of our

  1469. fleshly

  1470. desires,

  1471. take heart

  1472. and repent

  1473. to Jesus

  1474. confessing

  1475. that you

  1476. need not

  1477. your own

  1478. power but

  1479. the power

  1480. of the

  1481. Holy Spirit

  1482. in your

  1483. hearts.

  1484. It's only

  1485. by the

  1486. power of

  1487. the Holy

  1488. Spirit that

  1489. we can

  1490. overcome

  1491. sin.

  1492. I think

  1493. of Ed's

  1494. sermon last

  1495. week,

  1496. of that

  1497. terrifying

  1498. point of

  1499. no return

  1500. that denying

  1501. and blaspheming

  1502. the work of

  1503. the Holy

  1504. Spirit can

  1505. culminate

  1506. to.

  1507. Just as

  1508. the final

  1509. stage of

  1510. frostbite

  1511. brings

  1512. irreparable

  1513. damage to

  1514. the body,

  1515. the final

  1516. stage of

  1517. unbelief is

  1518. the irreversible

  1519. spiritual death

  1520. that will lead

  1521. to eternal

  1522. separation from

  1523. God.

  1524. God,

  1525. this is no

  1526. trifling matter

  1527. but for those

  1528. of you who

  1529. feel that

  1530. burden,

  1531. for those

  1532. of you who

  1533. feel those

  1534. pangs of

  1535. regret and

  1536. remorse over

  1537. your sins and

  1538. your unbelief,

  1539. if you feel

  1540. the burden and

  1541. hopelessness of

  1542. not being able

  1543. to save

  1544. yourself by

  1545. your own

  1546. strength,

  1547. this means

  1548. that you're

  1549. not too

  1550. late.

  1551. You're not

  1552. at that final

  1553. point of

  1554. frostbite.

  1555. You're not

  1556. at that final

  1557. point of

  1558. unbelief.

  1559. there's still

  1560. warmth remaining

  1561. in your soul

  1562. and there's

  1563. still an

  1564. opportunity for

  1565. your heart to

  1566. receive the

  1567. Holy Spirit and

  1568. be set apart

  1569. from this evil

  1570. generation by

  1571. declaring your

  1572. allegiance and

  1573. need for

  1574. Jesus Christ.

  1575. As the

  1576. apostle Paul

  1577. writes in

  1578. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1579. 8,

  1580. you,

  1581. however,

  1582. are not in

  1583. the flesh but

  1584. in the spirit.

  1585. If in fact the

  1586. spirit of God

  1587. dwells in you,

  1588. anyone who

  1589. does not have

  1590. the spirit of

  1591. Christ does

  1592. not belong to

  1593. him.

  1594. But if Christ

  1595. is in you,

  1596. although the

  1597. body is dead

  1598. because of

  1599. sin,

  1600. the spirit is

  1601. life because of

  1602. righteousness.

  1603. If the spirit

  1604. of him who

  1605. raised Jesus

  1606. from the dead

  1607. dwells in you,

  1608. he who raised

  1609. Christ Jesus

  1610. from the dead

  1611. will also give

  1612. life to your

  1613. mortal bodies

  1614. through the

  1615. spirit,

  1616. his spirit,

  1617. who dwells

  1618. in you.

  1619. Praise God

  1620. that the Holy

  1621. Spirit is the

  1622. seal and guarantee

  1623. of our salvation

  1624. and that we

  1625. don't have to

  1626. work out our

  1627. salvation on

  1628. our own strength,

  1629. but we can

  1630. receive such

  1631. grace through

  1632. faith in our

  1633. Lord Jesus

  1634. Christ.

  1635. So who

  1636. then is

  1637. set apart

  1638. from this

  1639. evil generation?

  1640. Jesus gives

  1641. us the answer

  1642. in a very

  1643. surprising way.

  1644. We see in

  1645. verse 46,

  1646. in the midst

  1647. of Jesus

  1648. teaching and

  1649. rebuking these

  1650. Pharisees.

  1651. His mother

  1652. and his

  1653. brothers stood

  1654. outside asking

  1655. to speak to

  1656. him.

  1657. While we

  1658. don't know

  1659. exactly in

  1660. the text what

  1661. they wanted to

  1662. talk to him

  1663. about, we

  1664. have several

  1665. accounts in

  1666. the Gospel of

  1667. John and the

  1668. Gospel of

  1669. Mark that

  1670. attest to

  1671. Jesus' biological

  1672. brothers and

  1673. family not

  1674. believing in

  1675. him and his

  1676. ministry.

  1677. We can imagine

  1678. in this case

  1679. too, they

  1680. wanted to speak

  1681. to Jesus either

  1682. out of concern

  1683. from him or

  1684. wanting to

  1685. pull him away

  1686. from any

  1687. confrontation or

  1688. conflict with

  1689. the Pharisees.

  1690. Jesus, you're

  1691. causing a scene.

  1692. Jesus, this is

  1693. too much.

  1694. Get out of

  1695. this place.

  1696. But Jesus

  1697. replies to

  1698. their pleas,

  1699. who is my

  1700. mother and

  1701. who are my

  1702. brothers?

  1703. Now, I

  1704. don't know

  1705. about you

  1706. guys, but

  1707. if my mother

  1708. and my

  1709. brothers wanted

  1710. to talk to

  1711. me,

  1712. and if I

  1713. were to

  1714. say to

  1715. them,

  1716. who is

  1717. my mom?

  1718. Who are

  1719. my brothers?

  1720. I'd be in

  1721. some pretty

  1722. big trouble.

  1723. But Jesus

  1724. asked this

  1725. question, and

  1726. then he

  1727. stretches out

  1728. his hand

  1729. toward his

  1730. disciples and

  1731. declares in

  1732. verse 50,

  1733. here are my

  1734. mother and

  1735. my brothers.

  1736. For whoever

  1737. does the will

  1738. of my Father

  1739. in heaven is

  1740. my brother

  1741. sister and

  1742. mother.

  1743. Jesus isn't

  1744. saying all

  1745. this to

  1746. outright reject

  1747. his biological

  1748. family.

  1749. He's not

  1750. doing all

  1751. this to

  1752. coldly diss

  1753. his mother

  1754. and brothers.

  1755. However, what

  1756. he is saying

  1757. is that his

  1758. biological tie to

  1759. his family is

  1760. secondary to

  1761. his relationship

  1762. with those who

  1763. claim allegiance

  1764. to God.

  1765. God.

  1766. Those who

  1767. follow Jesus

  1768. and believe in

  1769. his word and

  1770. ministry are

  1771. closer to

  1772. Jesus than

  1773. are his

  1774. actual mother

  1775. and brothers.

  1776. Jesus' claim

  1777. here is

  1778. reminiscent of

  1779. his earlier

  1780. statement in

  1781. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 10:34–38

  1782. 10, verse

  1783. 34 to 38,

  1784. where he says,

  1785. whoever loves

  1786. father or

  1787. mother more

  1788. than me is

  1789. not worthy

  1790. of me.

  1791. and whoever

  1792. loves son or

  1793. daughter more

  1794. than me is

  1795. not worthy

  1796. of me.

  1797. Whoever does

  1798. not take his

  1799. cross and

  1800. follow me is

  1801. not worthy

  1802. of me.

  1803. If family

  1804. relationships or

  1805. any earthly

  1806. relationship,

  1807. father,

  1808. mother,

  1809. child,

  1810. sibling,

  1811. friend,

  1812. lover,

  1813. boss,

  1814. whoever,

  1815. if any of

  1816. these relationships

  1817. takes priority

  1818. over loving

  1819. and treasuring

  1820. God first,

  1821. then Jesus

  1822. says that they

  1823. are not

  1824. worthy of

  1825. him.

  1826. There is

  1827. no compromise

  1828. of this.

  1829. There's no

  1830. secondary or

  1831. tertiary option.

  1832. Either we

  1833. give Jesus

  1834. our undivided

  1835. allegiance and

  1836. priority in

  1837. our hearts

  1838. and in our

  1839. lives,

  1840. or we are

  1841. not for

  1842. him.

  1843. And giving

  1844. him only

  1845. half-hearted,

  1846. partial

  1847. attention.

  1848. But amidst

  1849. this hard

  1850. truth,

  1851. there's also

  1852. something so

  1853. loving and

  1854. gracious in

  1855. what Jesus

  1856. says.

  1857. Won't you

  1858. read verse

  1859. 50 with me

  1860. again?

  1861. For

  1862. whoever,

  1863. whoever does

  1864. the will of

  1865. my Father in

  1866. heaven is my

  1867. brother and

  1868. sister and

  1869. mother.

  1870. Jesus could

  1871. have placed

  1872. all sorts of

  1873. criteria for

  1874. those who can

  1875. be called

  1876. worthy to be

  1877. called his

  1878. family.

  1879. He could

  1880. have said,

  1881. only the Jews

  1882. can be called

  1883. my family because

  1884. we share the

  1885. same bloodline.

  1886. He could have

  1887. looked at the

  1888. Pharisees and

  1889. said, thank you

  1890. for your piety

  1891. and your zeal.

  1892. You are who I

  1893. call family.

  1894. or he could

  1895. have placed a

  1896. whole sequence

  1897. of requirements.

  1898. Whoever has

  1899. kept all of the

  1900. commandments,

  1901. whoever has

  1902. gave at least

  1903. 10% of their

  1904. earnings to the

  1905. temple, has

  1906. pilgrimed to

  1907. Jerusalem for

  1908. all the Jewish

  1909. feasts and

  1910. festivals, whoever

  1911. has recited the

  1912. Torah from memory

  1913. is worthy to be

  1914. called my family.

  1915. He could have

  1916. placed all of

  1917. these requirements

  1918. and criteria to

  1919. have family.

  1920. But he doesn't

  1921. do that.

  1922. Instead, he

  1923. stretches his

  1924. hand out to

  1925. his disciples and

  1926. calls out, these

  1927. are my brothers.

  1928. Whoever does

  1929. the will of my

  1930. father is my

  1931. family.

  1932. Look at Jesus'

  1933. disciples.

  1934. We have

  1935. fishermen.

  1936. We have a

  1937. tax collector.

  1938. We have a

  1939. political radical

  1940. zealot who

  1941. made the

  1942. ragtag group

  1943. of men that

  1944. followed Jesus.

  1945. The 12

  1946. stooges, if I

  1947. may.

  1948. Some of

  1949. them were

  1950. illiterate.

  1951. Some were

  1952. stereotyped as

  1953. dishonest and

  1954. greedy.

  1955. Some were

  1956. revolutionaries

  1957. trying to

  1958. overthrow the

  1959. Roman government.

  1960. It's the

  1961. strangest

  1962. combination of

  1963. folks congregated

  1964. together.

  1965. The Pharisees

  1966. would have seen

  1967. this group of

  1968. guys and thought

  1969. to themselves,

  1970. what the heck

  1971. is this?

  1972. How does

  1973. Jesus call

  1974. these guys

  1975. his brothers?

  1976. Jesus calls

  1977. these men

  1978. these whoever's,

  1979. his brothers,

  1980. his family,

  1981. because they

  1982. were willing

  1983. to leave

  1984. everything they

  1985. knew and

  1986. had.

  1987. Their

  1988. occupations,

  1989. their family,

  1990. the comforts of

  1991. their homes,

  1992. to follow

  1993. Jesus and

  1994. to do the

  1995. will of the

  1996. Father in

  1997. heaven.

  1998. these men

  1999. were able to

  2000. be set apart

  2001. from the evil

  2002. generation

  2003. because they

  2004. believed,

  2005. because they

  2006. followed Jesus.

  2007. Church,

  2008. Jesus'

  2009. declaration of

  2010. his family

  2011. is also an

  2012. invitation.

  2013. It's an

  2014. invitation for

  2015. us today.

  2016. Whoever

  2017. does the

  2018. will of my

  2019. Father,

  2020. it's my

  2021. brother and

  2022. sister and

  2023. mother,

  2024. they are

  2025. my family.

  2026. This

  2027. invitation

  2028. still remains

  2029. for us

  2030. today.

  2031. Whoever is

  2032. willing to

  2033. sacrifice their

  2034. worldly lives,

  2035. their idols,

  2036. their self-righteousness

  2037. to follow Jesus

  2038. will be set

  2039. aside from

  2040. the evil

  2041. generation of

  2042. unbelief and

  2043. instead be part

  2044. of the family

  2045. of Jesus,

  2046. the chosen

  2047. generation.

  2048. And that's

  2049. whoever

  2050. does the

  2051. will of

  2052. the Father

  2053. in heaven.

  2054. And Jesus

  2055. is only

  2056. able to

  2057. declare that

  2058. by

  2059. accomplishing

  2060. the prophesied

  2061. sign of

  2062. Jonah,

  2063. his death

  2064. and

  2065. resurrection.

  2066. The

  2067. gospel of

  2068. John,

    John 1 chapter mention

  2069. chapter 1,

  2070. testifies the

  2071. true light

  2072. which gives

  2073. light to

  2074. everyone was

  2075. coming into

  2076. the world.

  2077. God,

  2078. he was in

  2079. the world

  2080. and the

  2081. world was

  2082. made through

  2083. him,

  2084. yet the

  2085. world did

  2086. not know

  2087. him.

  2088. He came to

  2089. his own

  2090. and his own

  2091. people did

  2092. not receive

  2093. him.

  2094. But to all

  2095. who did

  2096. receive him,

  2097. who believed

  2098. in his name,

  2099. he gave the

  2100. right to

  2101. become

  2102. children of

  2103. God,

  2104. who are born

  2105. not of blood,

  2106. nor of the

  2107. will of the

  2108. flesh,

  2109. nor of the

  2110. will of man,

  2111. but of

  2112. God.

  2113. brothers and

  2114. sisters,

  2115. we too were

  2116. once part of

  2117. the evil

  2118. generation.

  2119. We too at

  2120. one point did

  2121. not believe in

  2122. Jesus as our

  2123. Lord and Savior

  2124. and thought that

  2125. we could save

  2126. ourselves,

  2127. our own

  2128. self-righteousness,

  2129. our self-sufficiency,

  2130. our own

  2131. strivings.

  2132. And in our

  2133. unbelief,

  2134. we idolized the

  2135. world and

  2136. idolized ourselves

  2137. and in our

  2138. sin,

  2139. we with the

  2140. Pharisees and

  2141. the Jews and

  2142. the rest of the

  2143. world crucified

  2144. Jesus on that

  2145. cross.

  2146. But Jesus,

  2147. the Son of

  2148. God,

  2149. the fulfillment

  2150. of the law

  2151. and prophets

  2152. after three

  2153. days and

  2154. three nights

  2155. in the place

  2156. of the dead,

  2157. rose again

  2158. from the

  2159. grave.

  2160. And in

  2161. resurrecting,

  2162. he defeated

  2163. sin and

  2164. death to

  2165. resurrection

  2166. life.

  2167. Jesus

  2168. displayed the

  2169. Son of

  2170. Jonah to

  2171. show his

  2172. authority as

  2173. the Son of

  2174. God,

  2175. his authority

  2176. over life

  2177. and death.

  2178. And it's

  2179. through this

  2180. death and

  2181. resurrection,

  2182. Jesus declares

  2183. that whoever

  2184. believes in

  2185. him,

  2186. whoever follows

  2187. him,

  2188. whoever does

  2189. the will of

  2190. the Father

  2191. in heaven

  2192. will not

  2193. perish,

  2194. but have

  2195. eternal life

  2196. forever a

  2197. member of the

  2198. family of

  2199. Jesus.

  2200. It's through

  2201. his death and

  2202. resurrection that

  2203. we have the

  2204. opportunity to

  2205. believe and

  2206. follow Jesus

  2207. and forever be

  2208. adopted into

  2209. his family to

  2210. be able to

  2211. call God

  2212. our Father

  2213. and to

  2214. call Jesus

  2215. our brother.

  2216. It's through

  2217. his death and

  2218. resurrection that

  2219. Jesus is able to

  2220. stretch his hands

  2221. out to us and

  2222. testify,

  2223. here are my

  2224. brothers,

  2225. here are my

  2226. sisters,

  2227. here is my

  2228. family.

  2229. family.

  2230. If any of you

  2231. here are new to

  2232. the church,

  2233. to our church,

  2234. and this is your

  2235. first time hearing

  2236. the gospel of

  2237. Jesus Christ,

  2238. please listen to

  2239. Jesus' invitation.

  2240. Whoever does the

  2241. will of my Father

  2242. in heaven is my

  2243. brother and sister

  2244. and mother.

  2245. Look around you.

  2246. None of us have

  2247. the qualifications

  2248. to be called

  2249. Jesus' family.

  2250. I don't know if

  2251. we have any

  2252. ethnic Jews here.

  2253. I don't know,

  2254. I know for sure

  2255. that we all have

  2256. not followed God's

  2257. commandments to the

  2258. perfect T.

  2259. This is a house,

  2260. a hospital of

  2261. broken souls and

  2262. broken people,

  2263. and yet God in

  2264. his infinite

  2265. kindness sent

  2266. his son Jesus to

  2267. die for our

  2268. sins, that we

  2269. can be grafted

  2270. into the body

  2271. of Christ,

  2272. the family of

  2273. Jesus.

  2274. So for those of

  2275. you who don't

  2276. believe yet,

  2277. we're in the

  2278. midst of an evil

  2279. generation, but

  2280. the invitation is

  2281. still here.

  2282. If you feel that

  2283. conviction in your

  2284. heart to consider

  2285. following Jesus as

  2286. your Lord and

  2287. Savior, following

  2288. Jesus as your

  2289. brother, please

  2290. don't hesitate.

  2291. please don't

  2292. hesitate to talk

  2293. to me, any of

  2294. our pastoral team,

  2295. any of our

  2296. church members,

  2297. about what it

  2298. means and what

  2299. it takes to

  2300. believe in the

  2301. gospel and to

  2302. be a part of

  2303. the family of

  2304. God.

  2305. And for those

  2306. of us who do

  2307. believe in the

  2308. gospel, who are

  2309. part of the

  2310. family of Jesus,

  2311. Jesus is still

  2312. calling.

  2313. He's still

  2314. inviting those

  2315. who are still in

  2316. the darkness of

  2317. this generation to

  2318. step out in

  2319. faith.

  2320. faith.

  2321. And so as

  2322. brothers and

  2323. sisters to

  2324. Jesus and as

  2325. bearers of the

  2326. gospel in this

  2327. broken world, let

2328. us do the will of

  2329. our Father in

  2330. heaven and extend

  2331. that invitation of

  2332. faith to those

  2333. around us, that

  2334. they may believe and

  2335. become part of the

  2336. family of Jesus, that

2337. we can call them our

  2338. brothers and our

  2339. sisters.

  2340. Because one day

  2341. we will see for

  2342. sure.

  2343. We will all know

  2344. for sure whether

  2345. we are a believer

  2346. or not, every

  2347. knee will bow and

  2348. every tongue will

  2349. confess that Jesus

  2350. is Lord and we'll

  2351. be judged before the

  2352. Lord of whether we

  2353. truly believed and

  2354. lived out the

  2355. gospel or not.

  2356. What great love

  2357. that we should be

  2358. called children of

  2359. God, that we should

  2360. be called brothers

  2361. and sisters to

  2362. Jesus.

  2363. May the God of

  2364. hope fill you with

  2365. all joy and peace

  2366. and believing so

2367. that by the power of

  2368. the Holy Spirit you

  2369. may abound in hope.

  2370. Let's pray.

  2371. Lord, we confess

2372. that we often are so

  2373. discouraged when we

2374. look out to this evil

  2375. generation, all the

  2376. darkness around us.

  2377. we confess that there

  2378. are moments where we

  2379. do doubt, where doubt

  2380. does creep in and

  2381. Satan does try to

2382. tempt us to draw us

  2383. away from you.

  2384. But Lord, we thank

2385. you so much that you

  2386. give us your Holy

  2387. Spirit as a sure

  2388. guarantee and seal of

  2389. our salvation.

  2390. We thank you that

  2391. through the blood of

  2392. Jesus, through his

2393. death on the cross and

  2394. his resurrection from

2395. the grave, we can be

  2396. called your children,

2397. that we can be called

  2398. brothers and sisters to

  2399. Jesus, his family.

2400. And thank you that you

  2401. extend that invitation

  2402. out, not just to

  2403. righteous people, not

2404. just to Jews, but to

  2405. the whole world.

2406. Lord, we pray that your

  2407. word convicts our

  2408. hearts, draws us nearer

2409. to us and reminds us

2410. that though we are in

2411. the midst of an evil

  2412. generation, your way is

  2413. better.

2414. that you are our great

  2415. father.

  2416. We thank you, Lord.

  2417. We love you.

2418. We pray all this in Jesus'

  2419. name.

  2420. Amen.
