  1. It's great to be back with you guys, miss worshiping with you all last week.

  2. Please open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  3. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  4. We'd love to give you a copy of the Bible that you can take home with you and use while you're here.

  5. We're going through this series in the Gospel of Matthew, and we are in chapter 13 today,

  6. verses 1 to 23.

  7. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  8. Father, we thank you because you did not leave us to our own devices.

  9. But you gave us instead your Word.

  10. The words of life.

  11. Word that brought this world into being.

  12. Word that now makes the dead, those who are spiritually dead, live again in Christ.

  13. Lord, we now humble ourselves before your living Word.

  14. We ask that you will give us eyes to see and ears to hear.

  15. exalt the name of your Son, Jesus Christ.

  16. Help us cherish and hold fast to his message of salvation.

  17. It's the good news you have given to us in him.

  18. Teach us to do that better now as we hear from you in Matthew 13.

  19. In Jesus' name we pray.

  20. Amen.

  21. Please stand if you're able.

  22. Let's honor God as we read from his Word as he addresses us.

  23. That same day, Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea.

  24. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down.

  25. And the whole crowd stood on the beach, and he told them many things in parables, saying,

  26. A sower went out to sow, and as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them.

  27. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil.

  28. And immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil.

  29. But when the sun rose, they were scorched.

  30. And since they had no root, they withered away.

  31. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.

  32. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

  33. He who has ears, let him hear.

  34. Then the disciples came and said to him,

  35. Why do you speak to them in parables?

  36. And he answered them,

  37. To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

  38. For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance.

  39. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

  40. This is why I speak to them in parables.

  41. Because seeing, they do not see.

  42. And hearing, they do not hear.

  43. Nor do they understand.

  44. Indeed, in their case, the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says,

  45. You will indeed hear, but never understand.

  46. And you will indeed see, but never perceive.

  47. For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear,

  48. and their eyes they have closed.

  49. Lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears,

  50. and understand with their heart, and turn.

  51. And I would heal them.

  52. But blessed are your eyes, for they see,

  53. and your ears, for they hear.

  54. For truly I say to you, many prophets and righteous people long to see what you see,

  55. and did not see it.

  56. And to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

  57. Hear, then, the parable of the sower.

  58. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it,

  59. the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart.

  60. This is what was sown along the path.

  61. As for what was sown on rocky ground,

  62. this is the one who hears the word, and immediately receives it with joy.

  63. Yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while.

  64. And when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word,

  65. immediately he falls away.

  66. As for what was sown among thorns,

  67. this is the one who hears the word,

  68. but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word,

  69. and it proves unfruitful.

  70. As for what was sown on good soil,

  71. this is the one who hears the word and understands it.

  72. He indeed bears fruit and yields,

  73. in one case a hundredfold,

  74. in another sixty,

  75. and in another thirty.

  76. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  77. Please be seated.

  78. Thank you.

  79. There's an issue that has befuddled pastors

  80. and different ministers of the church

  81. throughout the generations,

  82. and it's that you can tell two people

  83. the self-same gospel,

  84. and yet one person rejects it outright and scoffs,

  85. while the other person receives it eagerly.

  86. Even within the church,

  87. people can hear the self-same gospel

  88. from the same preachers

  89. over many months and years,

  90. and while some seem to soak it all in

  91. and mature steadily,

  92. others stagnate

  93. or even fall away.

  94. What are we to make of all of this?

  95. What accounts for the varied outcomes?

  96. Jesus answers that question

  97. in two primary ways.

  98. First is that God only reveals the secret to some.

  99. That's his first answer.

  100. And the second answer is this,

  101. only some people hear and understand.

  102. I've mentioned to you before

  103. that the Gospel of Matthew

  104. is structured around five main discourses,

  105. and this is the third discourse,

  106. which is on the theme of the kingdom of heaven,

  107. kingdom, the word,

  108. occurs 12 times in chapter 13 alone.

  109. The kingdom of God

  110. or the kingdom of heaven

  111. refers to the dominion

  112. or the rulership of God

  113. over his subjects.

  114. And this passage,

  115. and this third discourse in particular,

  116. is concerned with

  117. what does it look like

  118. when the kingdom of heaven

  119. breaks in upon the earth?

  120. What does it take?

  121. What does it look like

  122. for us to become participants

  123. or citizens of the kingdom of heaven?

  124. That's the important question

  125. that this discourse addresses.

  126. Jesus begins this teaching

  127. by the Sea of Galilee.

  128. In our cultural context,

  129. preachers like me stand,

  130. and people who are listening sit.

  131. In the near eastern context,

  132. the teachers,

  133. in the Jewish context,

  134. the teachers sit,

  135. and then the disciples gather around.

  136. So when Jesus sits down by the sea,

  137. the disciples get the cue.

  138. They all gather around him

  139. to hear what he has to say.

  140. But when the crowd gets large,

  141. the large crowd gathers around him,

  142. he goes onto a boat

  143. into the Sea of Galilee

  144. and then preaches from there

  145. to the people who are sitting on the shore

  146. because,

  147. I mean,

  148. they probably knew this from experience.

  149. Sound travels further in water,

  150. and so because of that,

  151. this would provide natural amplification.

  152. And then he says in verse 3,

  153. it says in verse 3,

  154. Matthew says,

  155. Jesus told them many things in parables.

  156. This is one of the distinctive features

  157. of this third discourse.

  158. It is made up almost entirely of parables.

  159. Eight parables to be exact

  160. about the kingdom of heaven.

  161. Of the 17 occurrences of the Greek word

  162. for parable in the Gospel of Matthew,

  163. 12 of them occurs in this chapter.

  164. Verse 34 says,

  165. in fact,

  166. that Jesus said nothing to the crowds

  167. without a parable.

  168. And this first parable that Jesus tells

  169. is one of the most famous ones

  170. that we know of in English

  171. as the parable of the sower.

  172. But since the focus in Matthew

  173. is not on the sower per se,

  174. but on the seeds

  175. sown on four different types of soil,

  176. it may be more aptly be called

  177. the parable of the four types of ground.

  178. The word parable comes from a Greek word

  179. that means to literally

  180. to place alongside something,

  181. to juxtapose something

  182. for the sake of comparison.

  183. So in verse 24,

  184. Jesus introduces a parable by saying,

  185. the kingdom of heaven

  186. may be compared to

  187. a man who sowed good seed in his field.

  188. So a parable is an illustration,

  189. a comparison,

  190. an extended figure of speech

  191. whose meaning goes beyond

  192. the literal meaning on the surface.

  193. So let's look at the parable of the sower.

  194. Its meaning is not immediately apparent.

  195. We're so familiar with it now

  196. because we've been taught this passage,

  197. we've seen Jesus' explanation of it many times,

  198. that we can assume that this is,

  199. you know, self-evident.

  200. But that's not the case

  201. when you hear just the parable.

  202. Why is Jesus talking about

  203. seeds that fall along the path

  204. that are devoured by birds,

  205. and then seeds that fall on rocky ground

  206. that sprout up quickly

  207. but wither away due to lack of root,

  208. and other seeds that are choked by thorns

  209. as they grow,

  210. and still others that produce much fruit?

  211. Is he trying to relate to

  212. and commiserate with

  213. the plight of the farmers

  214. who labor in the arid ground

  215. of the ancient Near East?

  216. Is he trying to warn farmers

  217. about the need to exercise care when sowing?

  218. Or is he talking generally

  219. about the hardships of life,

  220. the difficulties of life,

  221. the meaning is not immediately clear.

  222. And that raises a question.

  223. Isn't the goal of the teacher

  224. to communicate concepts clearly

  225. so that the students understand?

  226. Why then employ parables,

  227. which by definition need to be deciphered,

  228. explained?

  229. Jesus' disciples had this exact question.

  230. So they ask him in verse 10,

  231. why do you speak to them in parables?

  232. And Jesus gives them a plain answer in verse 11.

  233. To you, it has been given to know

  234. the secrets of the kingdom of heaven,

  235. but to them, it has not been given.

  236. The secrets of the kingdom of heaven

  237. have been given to the disciples of Jesus

  238. to know,

  239. but it has not been given to the crowds

  240. to know.

  241. Jesus continues in verses 12 to 13.

  242. For to the one who has,

  243. more will be given,

  244. and he will have an abundance.

  245. But from the one who has not,

  246. even what he has will be taken away.

  247. This is why I speak to them in parables,

  248. because seeing,

  249. they do not see,

  250. and hearing,

  251. they do not hear,

  252. nor do they understand.

  253. This is why I speak to them in parables,

  254. Jesus says.

  255. Because seeing,

  256. they do not see,

  257. and hearing,

  258. they do not hear.

  259. Maybe some of you have seen

  260. this optical illusion

  261. that I saw years ago

  262. when I was a kid.

  263. It's a drawing,

  264. a black and white drawing,

  265. of a young woman

  266. with the headscarf

  267. with her head turned slightly this way.

  268. I think some of you guys

  269. have probably seen it.

  270. And if you,

  271. you know,

  272. if you just look at that,

  273. that's maybe all you see.

  274. Until someone points out

  275. the contours of another image,

  276. and when they do that,

  277. you suddenly see,

  278. not a beautiful young woman,

  279. but an old wrinkly woman

  280. with a huge crooked nose

  281. and a protruding chin.

  282. And then once you see that,

  283. you can't unsee it.

  284. Like that's what you see

  285. when you see that image.

  286. But unless someone points that out

  287. or you somehow came to see

  288. that second image,

  289. you could stare at that

  290. all day long

  291. and all you see

  292. is that first image.

  293. A parable is kind of like that.

  294. Because seeing,

  295. they do not see.

  296. You have heard the parable,

  297. but have you really heard it,

  298. not just with your ears,

  299. but with your heart?

  300. You understand the surface meaning

  301. of the words that Jesus speaks,

  302. but do you understand

  303. the deeper meaning underneath that?

  304. That's the point of the parable

  305. that some people see

  306. and yet not see.

  307. The point of the parable,

  308. the parable functions

  309. for some people to elucidate.

  310. For the disciples,

  311. when they explain it,

  312. it clarifies,

  313. helps them to understand.

  314. But for some others,

  315. it obfuscates,

  316. it makes opaque,

  317. more difficult to see

  318. and understand.

  319. In the parallel version

  320. of this parable

  321. in the Gospel of Mark,

  322. Mark 4, 11 and 12,

  323. Jesus makes this point

  324. even more explicit.

  325. He says,

  326. To you has been given

  327. the secret of the kingdom of God,

  328. but for those outside,

  329. everything is in parables,

  330. so that they may indeed see,

  331. but not perceive,

  332. and may indeed hear,

  333. but not understand,

  334. lest they should turn

  335. and be forgiven.

  336. Jesus cites Isaiah 6, 9-10

  337. in verses 14 and 15

  338. to explain this further.

  339. In the original context of Isaiah,

  340. this is in the commissioning

  341. of prophet Isaiah,

  342. God tells him to go

  343. and prophesy among

  344. the people of Israel,

  345. but as he commissions him,

  346. God tells Isaiah

  347. that people will not listen to him.

  348. In fact, he tells him

  349. that your prophecy

  350. will have the effect

  351. of hardening the hearts

  352. of the people of Israel.

  353. The heat of the sun

  354. melts chocolate,

  355. but it hardens clay.

  356. The word of God

  357. functions as an instrument

  358. of mercy to some,

  359. but as an instrument

  360. of judgment to others.

  361. It reveals and saves for some.

  362. It conceals and hardens for others.

  363. As 2 Corinthians 2, 16 says,

  364. witnesses of Jesus Christ,

  365. that they are,

  366. we are as witnesses of Christ,

  367. are a fragrance

  368. from death to death

  369. for those who are perishing,

  370. but we are a fragrance

  371. from life to life

  372. for those who are being saved.

  373. Jesus cites Isaiah 6, 9 to 10

  374. to explain why he teaches

  375. the crowds in parables,

  376. not so that they might hear

  377. and understand,

  378. but so that they might hear

  379. yet not understand.

  380. Follow along with me

  381. in verses 14 to 15.

  382. You will indeed hear,

  383. but never understand,

  384. and you will indeed see,

  385. but never perceive.

  386. For this people's heart

  387. has grown dull,

  388. and with their ears

  389. they can hardly hear,

  390. and their eyes

  391. they have closed,

  392. lest they should see

  393. with their eyes

  394. and hear with their ears

  395. and understand

  396. with their heart

  397. and turn,

  398. and I would heal them.

  399. A passage like this

  400. makes some of us

  401. feel uncomfortable

  402. because it seems

  403. to negate human agency

  404. and will.

  405. If we go back

  406. to the original quote

  407. in Isaiah,

  408. it's even more direct

  409. and forceful

  410. than Matthew's rendering of it,

  411. which he quotes

  412. from the Greek translation

  413. of the Hebrew.

  414. Isaiah 6, verse 10 says,

    Isaiah 6:10

  415. Make the heart

  416. of this people dull

  417. and their ears heavy

  418. and blind their eyes

  419. lest they see

  420. with their eyes

  421. and hear with their ears

  422. and understand

  423. with their hearts

  424. and turn and be healed.

  425. God's telling Isaiah

  426. that his prophecies

  427. would dull

  428. the people's hearts,

  429. harden their hearts

  430. in some sense,

  431. that Jesus is saying

  432. that his parables

  433. fulfill Isaiah's prophecy

  434. by doing the same thing.

  435. It's also important

  436. to note that

  437. it's not the case

  438. that the disciples

  439. of Jesus,

  440. they don't have dull hearts,

  441. they are humble

  442. and receptive

  443. and therefore

  444. they understand

  445. these parables

  446. without Jesus

  447. having to explain it

  448. to them.

  449. That's not what

  450. sets these disciples

  451. apart from the crowds.

  452. Matthew makes it clear

  453. in the course of the gospel

  454. that his disciples

  455. also do not understand

  456. the parables

  457. without Jesus

  458. explaining it to them.

  459. So he says

  460. in Matthew 13, 36,

  461. Then Jesus left the crowds

  462. and went into the house

  463. and his disciples

  464. came to him saying,

  465. Explain to us

  466. the parable

  467. of the weeds

  468. of the field.

  469. Again,

  470. in Matthew 15, 15,

  471. Peter says to Jesus,

  472. Explain the parable

  473. to us.

  474. They ask Jesus

  475. to explain the parables

  476. because they don't understand.

  477. Both the crowds

  478. and the disciples

  479. do not understand

  480. the parables.

  481. The only difference

  482. between them

  483. is that Jesus

  484. does not explain

  485. to the crowds,

  486. but he does explain

  487. to the disciples.

  488. Why?

  489. Jesus told us

  490. in verse 11,

  491. To you it has been given

  492. to know the secrets

  493. of the kingdom of heaven,

  494. but to them

  495. it has not been given.

  496. Or as Jesus

  497. puts it differently

  498. in Matthew 22, 14,

  499. Many are called,

  500. but few are chosen.

  501. Jesus did not choose

  502. the disciples

  503. because they are

  504. unlike these crowds

  505. and they have hearts

  506. that are humble

  507. and supple

  508. and able to understand.

  509. No,

  510. their hearts understand

  511. because Jesus chose them

  512. and explains things to them.

  513. Since this is

  514. a difficult topic,

  515. let me bring in

  516. a few other passages

  517. of scripture

  518. to demonstrate this

  519. to you all.

  520. Psalm 139, verse 16.

    Psalms 139:16

  521. It says,

  522. Your eyes saw

  523. my unformed substance.

  524. In your book

  525. were written

  526. every one of them

  527. the days that were

  528. formed for me,

  529. when as yet

  530. there was none of them.

  531. Notice it doesn't say

  532. that God foresaw

  533. what I will do

  534. ahead of time

  535. and then he just

  536. wrote it down

  537. in his book.

  538. If that's the case,

  539. then what's the point

  540. of telling us

  541. that God wrote the book

  542. before any of our days

  543. came to be?

  544. That priority,

  545. that priorness

  546. of God writing

  547. our days

  548. in the book

  549. is no priority

  550. at all

  551. if he only wrote

  552. down what he foresaw

  553. we will do.

  554. In that case,

  555. our choices

  556. and our actions

  557. come logically

  558. before God's writing

  559. and that's not

  560. what Psalm 139, 16 says.

  561. It says that

  562. our days

  563. were written

  564. in God's book

  565. before any of them

  566. came to be.

  567. We need to take God

  568. at his word

  569. when he tells us

  570. that he sovereignly

  571. ordains

  572. every single one of

  573. every single day

  574. of our lives

  575. before any of it

  576. came to be

  577. which is a source

  578. of great comfort

  579. for me

  580. knowing that no matter

  581. how hard my life gets,

  582. no matter what

  583. bad things happen,

  584. no matter what

  585. tragedy strike,

  586. all of it came

  587. from the loving

  588. and sovereign hand

  589. of my Father.

  590. Ephesians 1, 11 says this,

  591. in him we have

  592. obtained an inheritance

  593. having been predestined

  594. according to the purpose

  595. of him who works

  596. all things

  597. according to the

  598. counsel of his will.

  599. According to whose purpose

  600. did God predestine

  601. some of us

  602. for salvation?

  603. He says,

  604. according to the purpose

  605. of God

  606. who works all things.

  607. Well, but doesn't

  608. God purpose

  609. to uphold

  610. our free will

  611. and therefore

  612. work things out

  613. according to

  614. our wills

  615. and choices?

  616. What is the basis

  617. for God's purpose?

  618. having been predestined

  619. according to the purpose

  620. of him who works

  621. all things

  622. according to the

  623. counsel of his will.

  624. It says that our

  625. predestination is

  626. according to God's

  627. purpose

  628. and that God's purpose

  629. is not based on

  630. our will and choices

  631. but on the counsel

  632. of his will.

  633. So why is there

  634. such a wide range

  635. of differing responses

  636. to the gospel

  637. of Jesus Christ?

  638. One answer

  639. that our passage

  640. gives is this,

  641. God only reveals

  642. the secret

  643. to some.

  644. But if you walk

  645. away from this passage

  646. way down

  647. only by the fate

  648. of the non-elect,

  649. those who are not

  650. chosen by God

  651. in this sense,

  652. then you're missing

  653. the emphasis

  654. of Jesus' teaching.

  655. All of us

  656. were once

  657. depraved,

  658. hardened sinners.

  659. All of us

  660. once had dull hearts.

  661. What is remarkable

  662. is not that

  663. these sinners

  664. are not saved.

  665. What is remarkable

  666. is that some sinners

  667. are saved.

  668. what is remarkable

  669. is that to some

  670. it has been given

  671. to know the secrets

  672. of the kingdom

  673. of heaven.

  674. So Jesus says

  675. to his disciples

  676. in verses 16 to 17,

  677. but blessed are your eyes

  678. for they see

  679. and your ears

  680. for they hear.

  681. For truly I say

  682. to you,

  683. many prophets

  684. and righteous people

  685. long to see

  686. what you see

  687. and did not see it

  688. and to hear

  689. what you hear

  690. and did not hear it.

  691. I think it's fair

  692. to say that all of us

  693. have a fascination

  694. with secrets.

  695. We like to be privy

  696. to secrets.

  697. We all wonder

  698. what's in that vault

  699. or in that secret archive

  700. in the MI6 headquarters

  701. in London

  702. or what's hidden

  703. in that CIA headquarters

  704. in Langley, Virginia

  705. or what was hidden

  706. in the secret

  707. Vatican archives

  708. that wasn't open

  709. to the historians

  710. until like the 1880s

  711. or something like that.

  712. What's in there?

  713. People want to know

  714. these secrets

  715. want to be in on it.

  716. Jesus says

  717. that many prophets

  718. and righteous people

  719. throughout the ages

  720. long to see

  721. what you see

  722. and did not see it.

  723. Not only the prophets

  724. and righteous people,

  725. 1 Peter 1, 10-12

  726. tells us that

  727. even the angels,

  728. angels of heaven

  729. long to look

  730. and see

  731. what it was

  732. that God was planning

  733. his redemption plan

  734. through the suffering

  735. and death of Jesus Christ

  736. and his resurrection.

  737. God has invited us

  738. to be in on

  739. a secret

  740. that up to the point

  741. of Christ

  742. that not even his angels

  743. were fully privy to.

  744. He has now revealed

  745. that to us.

  746. What exactly

  747. are the secrets

  748. of the kingdom of heaven?

  749. The word secret here

  750. is the same word

  751. that is usually translated

  752. as mystery

  753. in the New Testament.

  754. Paul speaks

  755. of this mystery

  756. that God revealed

  757. to him in Ephesians 3,

  758. 4 to 6.

  759. When you read this,

  760. you can perceive

  761. my insight

  762. into the mystery

  763. of Christ,

  764. which was not made known

  765. to the sons of men

  766. in other generations

  767. as it has now

  768. been revealed

  769. to his holy apostles

  770. and prophets

  771. by the Spirit.

  772. This mystery

  773. is that

  774. the Gentiles

  775. are fellow heirs,

  776. members of the same body

  777. and partakers

  778. of the promise

  779. in Christ Jesus

  780. through the gospel.

  781. The secrets

  782. of the kingdom of heaven,

  783. the mystery

  784. of the ages

  785. is this,

  786. that Christ Jesus

  787. fulfilled the law

  788. of God

  789. by living the life

  790. of perfect obedience

  791. and then dying

  792. as the atoning sacrifice

  793. for sin on the cross

  794. in our place,

  795. in the place of sinners,

  796. and then he was raised

  797. from the dead

  798. in victory

  799. so that lawbreakers

  800. like you and I

  801. who were once enemies

  802. of God

  803. can be forgiven,

  804. pardoned,

  805. and become citizens

  806. of the kingdom of heaven.

  807. but how can

  808. the kingdom,

  809. the secrets

  810. of the kingdom

  811. of heaven

  812. be mine?

  813. See,

  814. that's the true wonder

  815. of the doctrine

  816. of election.

  817. It's meant

  818. to make us wonder

  819. why would it be

  820. that God

  821. would choose me?

  822. I wouldn't choose me

  823. if I were God.

  824. I'm slow to change.

  825. I'm like a stubborn mule,

  826. right?

  827. Really,

  828. really long times.

  829. I change slowly

  830. and gradually.

  831. I'm a Gentile dog,

  832. an ethnic mutt

  833. in all likelihood,

  834. even though I haven't

  835. taken one of those

  836. DNA tests,

  837. but just look at me.

  838. Definitely don't look

  839. 100% Korean

  840. if you ask me.

  841. I was alienated

  842. and hostile

  843. in mind to God,

  844. doing evil deeds,

  845. as it says

  846. in Colossians 1.21.

  847. My forefathers

  848. were engaged

  849. in idolatrous,

  850. futile ways.

  851. Opposed to the truth

  852. of God.

  853. If you go far

  854. back enough,

  855. my ancestors

  856. persecuted the Jews,

  857. the chosen people

  858. of God.

  859. I am the foremost

  860. of sinners.

  861. I was far off,

  862. separated from Christ,

  863. alienated from

  864. the commonwealth

  865. of Israel,

  866. and strangers

  867. to the covenants

  868. of promise,

  869. having no hope

  870. and without God

  871. in the world.

  872. That's me.

  873. So God,

  874. I think you've

  875. got the wrong

  876. person.

  877. I'm not your

  878. guy.

  879. I'm not supposed

  880. to know the secret.

  881. These precious

  882. secrets are not

  883. for my blind eyes

  884. to see,

  885. not for my deaf

  886. ears to hear,

  887. not for my dull

  888. heart to understand.

  889. God.

  890. But if God

  891. as the king

  892. gets to choose,

  893. then he can say,

  894. it doesn't matter

  895. what you say,

  896. I'm choosing you

  897. and revealing

  898. this secret to you.

  899. Pastor,

  900. he's still a pastor,

  901. I think,

  902. Stephen Um,

  903. who's an acquaintance

  904. of mine,

  905. when he used

  906. to do

  907. submissions work

  908. in South Korea,

  909. he would minister

  910. to prostitutes,

  911. and no matter

  912. how many times

  913. he would tell

  914. them the gospel

  915. and God's

  916. forgiveness

  917. and God can

  918. forgive you,

  919. you can have

  920. a new life

  921. in Christ,

  922. they wouldn't

  923. listen.

  924. They felt so

  925. much shame,

  926. so much shame

  927. from their

  928. lifestyle and

  929. what they had

  930. done,

  931. they said to

  932. themselves,

  933. God cannot

  934. possibly receive

  935. us.

  936. But it was

  937. when they

  938. were taught

  939. the doctrine

  940. of election,

  941. when they

  942. were taught

  943. that God

  944. is the king

  945. who sovereignly

  946. chooses and

  947. saves people

  948. for himself,

  949. that's when

  950. they said,

  951. oh,

  952. if that's

  953. the case,

  954. then I can

  955. believe that.

  956. That's the

  957. wonder of

  958. election.

  959. How can

  960. God choose

  961. me?

  962. Because my

  963. son died

  964. for your

  965. sins,

  966. he has

  967. fulfilled the

  968. law on your

  969. behalf,

  970. you whom I

  971. have chosen,

  972. you are no

  973. longer strangers

  974. and aliens,

  975. but you are

  976. fellow citizens

  977. of the kingdom

  978. of heaven.

  979. Remember,

  980. that's why

  981. Andrew preached

  982. on this

  983. passage in

  984. the preceding

  985. passage,

  986. Matthew 12,

  987. 41 to 42.

  988. What did

  989. Jesus use as

  990. examples when

  991. he was denouncing

  992. the Pharisees?

  993. He says,

  994. the men of

  995. Nineveh will

  996. rise up to

  997. condemn you.

  998. For Jonah

  999. came to them

  1000. and preached

  1001. and they

  1002. listened and

  1003. they

  1004. repented,

  1005. but something

  1006. greater than

  1007. Jonah is

  1008. here.

  1009. The queen

  1010. of Sheba,

  1011. the queen

  1012. of the

  1013. south,

  1014. came to

  1015. hear the

  1016. wisdom of

  1017. Solomon and

  1018. she listened

  1019. and she

  1020. will rise up

  1021. to condemn

  1022. you in the

  1023. day of

  1024. judgment because

  1025. something greater

  1026. than Solomon

  1027. is here.

  1028. Both of those

  1029. examples,

  1030. they're Gentiles,

  1031. sinners.

  1032. He's kind of

  1033. rubbing it in

  1034. the face of

  1035. these Pharisees,

  1036. the Jewish

  1037. religious elites.

  1038. you think

  1039. you're saved

  1040. because you're

  1041. a Jew.

  1042. You think

  1043. you're saved

  1044. because of

  1045. your own

  1046. righteousness,

  1047. not a

  1048. chance.

  1049. Those whom

  1050. God sovereignly

  1051. chooses and

  1052. reveals himself to,

  1053. those who

  1054. repent and

  1055. believe in

  1056. Jesus Christ,

  1057. only they

  1058. who recognize

  1059. that their

  1060. own righteousness

  1061. is inadequate

  1062. can be saved.

  1063. and so with

  1064. the religious

  1065. elites,

  1066. the cream of

  1067. the crop,

  1068. the moral

  1069. exemplars that

  1070. they thought

  1071. themselves to

  1072. be behind

  1073. him,

  1074. Jesus turns

  1075. to his

  1076. ragtag

  1077. bunch of

  1078. disciples,

  1079. the collection

  1080. of sinners

  1081. and tax

  1082. collectors who

  1083. have gathered

  1084. about him

  1085. and he says,

  1086. here are my

  1087. brothers,

  1088. here are my

  1089. mothers,

  1090. here are my

  1091. sisters.

  1092. brothers,

  1093. Jesus turns

  1094. upside down

  1095. the conventional

  1096. Jewish

  1097. understanding of

  1098. who is in

  1099. and who is

  1100. out.

  1101. Jesus has

  1102. made a way

  1103. for sinners

  1104. like us to

  1105. be saved.

  1106. And yes,

  1107. God sovereignly

  1108. chooses some

  1109. to be saved,

  1110. to be his

  1111. disciples,

  1112. but implicit in

  1113. this passage is

  1114. also an

  1115. invitation.

  1116. Yes,

  1117. the purpose is

  1118. to make people

  1119. hear,

  1120. some people

  1121. hear yet not

  1122. understand,

  1123. but there's

  1124. also an

  1125. invitation to

  1126. believe and

  1127. follow the

  1128. only person

  1129. who can

  1130. explain the

  1131. parables and

  1132. give its

  1133. meaning.

  1134. When I

  1135. defined the

  1136. word parable

  1137. for you

  1138. earlier,

  1139. I didn't

  1140. mention that

  1141. parable is

  1142. a Greek

  1143. word that's

  1144. used to

  1145. translate the

  1146. Hebrew word

  1147. for proverb

  1148. in the Old

  1149. Testament.

  1150. So when it

  1151. says in

  1152. verse 3 that

  1153. Jesus told

  1154. them many

  1155. things in

  1156. parables,

  1157. it recalls

  1158. 1 Kings 4

  1159. 32 which

  1160. tells us that

  1161. King Solomon

  1162. spoke in

  1163. many proverbs,

  1164. more specifically

  1165. 3,000 proverbs.

  1166. And remember

  1167. Jesus, we were

  1168. just told in

  1169. chapter 12

  1170. verse 42 that

  1171. Jesus is

  1172. something greater

  1173. than Solomon.

  1174. if the queen

  1175. of the south

  1176. traveled 1,500

  1177. miles to

  1178. hear the

  1179. wisdom that

  1180. God had

  1181. given to

  1182. Solomon,

  1183. then how

  1184. much more

  1185. when the

  1186. wisdom of

  1187. God in

  1188. the flesh,

  1189. when the

  1190. word of

  1191. God incarnate

  1192. is in our

  1193. midst, how

  1194. much more

  1195. should we

  1196. pay attention

  1197. to him

  1198. and listen

  1199. to him?

  1200. Divine

  1201. sovereignty

  1202. and salvation

  1203. does not

  1204. abrogate human

  1205. responsibility.

  1206. The

  1207. geologist

  1208. Frank Rhodes,

  1209. who was the

  1210. ninth president

  1211. of Cornell

  1212. University,

  1213. once used

  1214. this analogy

  1215. to explain

  1216. multiple types

  1217. of causes.

  1218. He asks,

  1219. so why is

  1220. the kettle

  1221. boiling?

  1222. Two types

  1223. of explanations

  1224. can be given.

  1225. At one level,

  1226. the stove top

  1227. is applying

  1228. thermal energy

  1229. to the base

  1230. of the kettle,

  1231. which then

  1232. generates kinetic

  1233. energy and the

  1234. molecules are

  1235. moving faster

  1236. and faster and

  1237. that is what

  1238. you're measuring

  1239. and then when

  1240. this reaches

  1241. 100 degrees

  1242. centigrade,

  1243. that's boiling.

  1244. That's one

  1245. way to explain

  1246. why the kettle

  1247. is boiling.

  1248. A second

  1249. answer that

  1250. you can give

  1251. is this,

  1252. the kettle

  1253. is boiling

  1254. because someone

  1255. put it on

  1256. to make a

  1257. cup of tea.

  1258. That's the

  1259. just as valid

  1260. of an

  1261. explanation.

  1262. Rhodes writes

  1263. this,

  1264. now these

  1265. are different

  1266. answers,

  1267. but both

  1268. are true.

  1269. Both are

  1270. complementary

  1271. and not

  1272. competitive.

  1273. One answer

  1274. is appropriate

  1275. within a

  1276. particular frame

  1277. of reference,

  1278. the other

  1279. within another

  1280. frame of

  1281. reference.

  1282. We have a

  1283. hard time

  1284. reconciling

  1285. divine sovereignty

  1286. and human

  1287. responsibility

  1288. because we

  1289. presume that

  1290. divine will

  1291. functions at

  1292. the same

  1293. level on

  1294. equal footing

  1295. as human

  1296. will,

  1297. as if they

  1298. function on

  1299. the same

  1300. plane,

  1301. but it's

  1302. not like

  1303. that.

  1304. Our will

  1305. is that of

  1306. the creature.

  1307. God's will

  1308. is that of

  1309. the creator.

  1310. Our will

  1311. is that of

  1312. the characters

  1313. in a book.

  1314. God's will

  1315. is that of

  1316. the author

  1317. of the book.

  1318. When I was

  1319. a child,

  1320. I only knew

  1321. how to draw

  1322. two-dimensional

  1323. things,

  1324. right?

  1325. Circle,

  1326. rectangle,

  1327. it's a human

  1328. being,

  1329. right?

  1330. It's like a,

  1331. and then as

  1332. I got older,

  1333. took some art

  1334. classes in high

  1335. school,

  1336. right,

  1337. you learn about

  1338. perspective,

  1339. and you learn

  1340. about shading,

  1341. and then you

  1342. learn to use

  1343. the contrast

  1344. and color

  1345. to give depth

  1346. and volume

  1347. to drawing.

  1348. And then when

  1349. you jump from

  1350. that two-dimensional

  1351. world to a

  1352. three-dimensional

  1353. world,

  1354. it revolutionizes

  1355. art,

  1356. right?

  1357. That's what

  1358. makes it look

  1359. good,

  1360. right?

  1361. Being finite

  1362. creatures is

  1363. like living

  1364. in a two-dimensional

  1365. world.

  1366. We function on

  1367. the X-Y

  1368. plane.

  1369. So we can't

  1370. quite grasp

  1371. the third

  1372. dimension,

  1373. the Z-axis,

  1374. right?

  1375. We know that

  1376. the two are

  1377. connected,

  1378. but from our

  1379. limited human

  1380. perspective,

  1381. we cannot

  1382. search the

  1383. reaches of

  1384. God's

  1385. infinite

  1386. mind.

  1387. It's important

  1388. to note,

  1389. however,

  1390. that this

  1391. does not

  1392. therefore in

  1393. any way

  1394. abrogate our

  1395. responsibility to

  1396. respond to the

  1397. gospel of Jesus

  1398. Christ in

  1399. faith.

  1400. If we think

  1401. to ourselves

  1402. after believing

  1403. in the

  1404. sovereignty of

  1405. God and

  1406. salvation,

  1407. well,

  1408. if God

  1409. chooses whom

  1410. he will

  1411. save,

  1412. well,

  1413. then it

  1414. doesn't

  1415. matter what

  1416. we choose

  1417. in the

  1418. end.

  1419. If you're

  1420. tempted to

  1421. think that

  1422. way,

  1423. I just want

  1424. you to know

  1425. that that's

  1426. not a

  1427. biblical

  1428. idea.

  1429. That type

  1430. of,

  1431. that kind

  1432. of thinking,

  1433. that line

  1434. of reasoning

  1435. is completely

  1436. foreign to

  1437. biblical

  1438. thought.

  1439. It never

  1440. occurs to

  1441. the writers

  1442. of Scripture.

  1443. The authors

  1444. of Scripture

  1445. did not

  1446. have the

  1447. difficulty

  1448. that we

  1449. have of

  1450. holding

  1451. divine

  1452. sovereignty

  1453. and human

  1454. responsibility

  1455. together.

  1456. It says,

  1457. choose this

  1458. day whom

  1459. you will

  1460. serve,

  1461. Joshua 24

  1462. 15.

  1463. That's

  1464. what Jesus

  1465. says in

  1466. verse 9,

  1467. he who

  1468. has ears,

  1469. let him

  1470. hear.

  1471. That's an

  1472. invitation.

  1473. Only those

  1474. to whom

  1475. God has

  1476. given ears

  1477. to hear

  1478. can hear,

  1479. yes,

  1480. but it

  1481. is not

  1482. our business

  1483. to know

  1484. whom exactly

  1485. that is.

  1486. The only

  1487. thing we

  1488. can do

  1489. is to

  1490. take heed

  1491. to hear

  1492. and understand

  1493. the gospel.

  1494. Instead of

  1495. wondering whether

  1496. other people

  1497. are chosen

  1498. by God

  1499. or not,

  1500. we share

  1501. the gospel

  1502. with them

  1503. all.

  1504. Isn't that

  1505. what Jesus

  1506. does here?

  1507. I mean,

  1508. I don't know

  1509. if it's

  1510. exactly,

  1511. you know,

  1512. 25%,

  1513. 25%,

  1514. 25%,

  1515. but if you

  1516. look at that

  1517. as 25%,

  1518. his success

  1519. rate's not

  1520. very good.

  1521. He sows

  1522. seeds everywhere

  1523. on paths

  1524. that will be

  1525. devoured by

  1526. birds,

  1527. on shallow

  1528. ground,

  1529. on rocky

  1530. ground,

  1531. among the

  1532. thorns,

  1533. he sows

  1534. everywhere.

  1535. God,

  1536. Jesus sows

  1537. liberally

  1538. everywhere,

  1539. and so we

  1540. must do as

  1541. well.

  1542. We can't

  1543. tell who

  1544. is elect,

  1545. who belongs

  1546. to God's

  1547. chosen people.

  1548. God has

  1549. not given

  1550. us that

  1551. knowledge,

  1552. not for us

  1553. to know.

  1554. No,

  1555. it is our

  1556. responsibility

  1557. to go and

  1558. liberally

  1559. sow the

  1560. gospel seeds

  1561. everywhere we

  1562. go.

  1563. Instead of

  1564. wondering whether

  1565. you are

  1566. chosen by

  1567. God or

  1568. not,

  1569. do what

  1570. you can

  1571. do,

  1572. which is

  1573. to put

  1574. your faith

  1575. in Jesus

  1576. Christ and

  1577. follow him

  1578. as a

  1579. disciple,

  1580. for that's

  1581. the only

  1582. way to

  1583. know whether

  1584. you belong

  1585. to him

  1586. or not.

  1587. That's the

  1588. point of

  1589. Jesus'

  1590. explanation

  1591. of the

  1592. parables

  1593. in verses

  1594. 17 to

  1595. 23.

  1596. The word

  1597. understand

  1598. comes up

  1599. a number

  1600. of times,

  1601. and it's

  1602. a key

  1603. word.

  1604. Verse 13,

  1605. hearing they

  1606. do not

  1607. hear,

  1608. nor do

  1609. they

  1610. understand.

  1611. Verse 14,

  1612. you will

  1613. indeed hear,

  1614. but never

  1615. understand.

  1616. Note this

  1617. contrast between

  1618. just mere

  1619. hearing of

  1620. the ear and

  1621. understanding

  1622. of the

  1623. heart.

  1624. Verse 15,

  1625. lest they

  1626. understand with

  1627. their heart

  1628. and turn,

  1629. and I

  1630. would heal

  1631. them.

  1632. This theme

  1633. of understanding

  1634. is continued

  1635. in the

  1636. explanation of

  1637. the parable

  1638. in verse

  1639. 19.

  1640. When anyone

  1641. hears the

  1642. word of

  1643. the kingdom

  1644. and does

  1645. not understand

  1646. it,

  1647. the evil

  1648. one comes

  1649. and snatches

  1650. away what

  1651. has been

  1652. sown in

  1653. his heart.

  1654. This

  1655. seed sown

  1656. along the

  1657. path is

  1658. contrasted

  1659. with the

  1660. seed that

  1661. is sown

  1662. on good

  1663. soil.

  1664. In verse

  1665. 23,

  1666. this is the

  1667. one who

  1668. hears the

  1669. word and

  1670. understands

  1671. it.

  1672. He

  1673. indeed

  1674. bears

  1675. fruit.

  1676. Only

  1677. the last

  1678. seed planted

  1679. on good

  1680. soil bears

  1681. fruit because

  1682. that's the

  1683. only one

  1684. that is

  1685. described as

  1686. having

  1687. understanding.

  1688. The seed

  1689. on the

  1690. path gets

  1691. eaten by

  1692. birds.

  1693. The seed

  1694. on rocky

  1695. ground

  1696. sprouts up

  1697. quickly but

  1698. withers in

  1699. the heat.

  1700. The seed

  1701. among the

  1702. thorns are

  1703. choked by

  1704. it.

  1705. These

  1706. three kinds

  1707. of seeds

  1708. all eventually

  1709. lose what

  1710. they had at

  1711. the beginning.

  1712. That's what

  1713. Jesus is

  1714. talking about

  1715. in verse

  1716. 12.

  1717. For to the

  1718. one who

  1719. has more

  1720. will be

  1721. given and

  1722. he will

  1723. have an

  1724. abundance but

  1725. from the

  1726. one who

  1727. has not

  1728. even what

  1729. he has

  1730. will be

  1731. taken away.

  1732. Only those

  1733. who hold

  1734. fast to the

  1735. word in

  1736. an honest

  1737. and good

  1738. heart,

  1739. those who

  1740. do not,

  1741. only those

  1742. who truly

  1743. understand the

  1744. gospel will

  1745. bear fruit

  1746. in one

  1747. case a

  1748. hundredfold,

  1749. in another

  1750. sixty and

  1751. another thirty

  1752. but to

  1753. others who

  1754. do not

  1755. hear and

  1756. understand,

  1757. even what

  1758. they had

  1759. will be

  1760. taken away

  1761. from them.

  1762. So let

  1763. me ask you

  1764. this all

  1765. important

  1766. question.

  1767. Do you

  1768. really

  1769. understand?

  1770. to use

  1771. this parable,

  1772. what kind

  1773. of soil

  1774. are you?

  1775. Verse 4

  1776. tells us

  1777. that some

  1778. seeds fell

  1779. along the

  1780. path and

  1781. the birds

  1782. came and

  1783. devoured

  1784. them.

  1785. A seed

  1786. cannot

  1787. germinate,

  1788. it can't

  1789. lay roots

  1790. through a

  1791. path.

  1792. So it

  1793. just sits

  1794. there,

  1795. lies there

  1796. until the

  1797. birds come

  1798. and devour

  1799. it.

  1800. This,

  1801. Jesus

  1802. explains in

  1803. verse 18,

  1804. is when

  1805. anyone hears

  1806. the word,

  1807. the word of

  1808. the kingdom,

  1809. and does not

  1810. understand it,

  1811. the evil one

  1812. comes and

  1813. snatches away

  1814. what has been

  1815. sown in his

  1816. heart.

  1817. The enemy

  1818. of God,

  1819. Satan,

  1820. is always

  1821. looking to

  1822. snatch away

  1823. the gospel

  1824. seeds that

  1825. are sown on

  1826. the hearts

  1827. of people.

  1828. Even today

  1829. there may be

  1830. people who

  1831. hear and

  1832. then will

  1833. turn around

  1834. and forget

  1835. about this

  1836. gospel.

  1837. Please don't

  1838. let that

  1839. happen.

  1840. Don't let

  1841. the good

  1842. news of

  1843. Jesus Christ

  1844. go in

  1845. one ear

  1846. and out

  1847. the other

  1848. and slip

  1849. away from

  1850. your consciousness,

  1851. slip away

  1852. from your

  1853. life.

  1854. Hold on

  1855. to the

  1856. gospel.

  1857. Meditate

  1858. on it,

  1859. think on it,

  1860. understand it,

  1861. ask sincere

  1862. questions.

  1863. Don't let

  1864. the evil

  1865. one come

  1866. and snatch

  1867. away what

  1868. you hear

  1869. this morning.

  1870. Some seeds,

  1871. Jesus says

  1872. in verse 5,

  1873. fall on rocky

  1874. ground where

  1875. they did not

  1876. have much

  1877. soil and

  1878. immediately

  1879. they sprang

  1880. up.

  1881. Sometimes this

  1882. happens in

  1883. real life,

  1884. that seeds

  1885. sprout faster

  1886. on shallow

  1887. soil because

  1888. it doesn't

  1889. have long

  1890. ways to go

  1891. down in

  1892. terms of

  1893. roots and

  1894. it doesn't

  1895. have long

  1896. ways to

  1897. come up

  1898. because it's

  1899. on shallow

  1900. soil.

  1901. It doesn't

  1902. take much

  1903. energy to

  1904. sprout its

  1905. leaf past

  1906. the soil.

  1907. and because

  1908. it receives

  1909. more warmth

  1910. because it's

  1911. closer to

  1912. the surface,

  1913. it germinates

  1914. faster and

  1915. sprouts up

  1916. faster.

  1917. However,

  1918. such plants

  1919. are prone

  1920. to drying

  1921. out and

  1922. withering

  1923. away more

  1924. quickly because

  1925. when the

  1926. heat gets

  1927. hotter,

  1928. the root

  1929. system is

  1930. too shallow,

  1931. it doesn't

  1932. get enough

  1933. moisture.

  1934. Jesus explains

  1935. in verse 20

  1936. to 21,

  1937. notice that

  1938. phrase,

  1939. he has no

  1940. root in

  1941. himself.

  1942. I've seen

  1943. many people

  1944. move here

  1945. to the

  1946. northeast,

  1947. to Massachusetts,

  1948. from the

  1949. Bible Belt

  1950. or from the

  1951. south,

  1952. and when

  1953. they are

  1954. no longer

  1955. surrounded

  1956. by Christian

  1957. community,

  1958. when Christianity

  1959. is no longer

  1960. a badge of

  1961. respectability

  1962. but a badge

  1963. of disrepute

  1964. and dishonor,

  1965. when Christians

  1966. are viewed

  1967. as ignorant

  1968. bigots,

  1969. they abandon

  1970. the faith

  1971. that they

  1972. once had.

  1973. I've also

  1974. seen many

  1975. young people

  1976. who were

  1977. very active

  1978. and zealous

  1979. in church

  1980. youth groups

  1981. abandon

  1982. their faith

  1983. once they

  1984. go to

  1985. college

  1986. when they're

  1987. no longer

  1988. under their

  1989. parents'

  1990. roof

  1991. and supervision,

  1992. when they

  1993. have the

  1994. independence

  1995. that they

  1996. never had

  1997. and when

  1998. they face

  1999. temptations

  2000. and peer

  2001. pressure to

  2002. sin like

  2003. they've never

  2004. had before,

  2005. they reject

  2006. God's word

  2007. and turn away

  2008. from it.

  2009. They fall

  2010. away.

  2011. Jesus says

  2012. that this

  2013. person is

  2014. someone who

  2015. has no

  2016. root in

  2017. himself.

  2018. This person

  2019. is like a

  2020. moss.

  2021. Mosses

  2022. don't have

  2023. real roots.

  2024. mosses

  2025. they absorb

  2026. their

  2027. moisture

  2028. water

  2029. directly

  2030. through

  2031. their

  2032. leaves

  2033. and

  2034. from

  2035. the

  2036. air.

  2037. This

  2038. is why

  2039. you find

  2040. mosses

  2041. only in

  2042. shady,

  2043. moist

  2044. environments

  2045. because they

  2046. have no

  2047. root and

  2048. they would

  2049. dry out

  2050. and get

  2051. scorched

  2052. by the

  2053. sun

  2054. easily

  2055. when it's

  2056. left out

  2057. in direct

  2058. sunlight.

  2059. They catch

  2060. some water

  2061. from their

  2062. environment

  2063. here and

  2064. there and

  2065. they survive

  2066. for a little

  2067. while but

  2068. they have

  2069. no roots

  2070. in

  2071. themselves.

  2072. They don't

  2073. know how

  2074. to receive

  2075. spiritual

  2076. nourishment

  2077. from Christ

  2078. directly.

  2079. They don't

  2080. know how

  2081. to abide

  2082. in Christ

  2083. divine.

  2084. It's like

  2085. when you

  2086. do

  2087. barbecue

  2088. with

  2089. coals

  2090. and let's

  2091. say when

  2092. you're done

  2093. barbecuing

  2094. and you

  2095. spill the

  2096. coal on

  2097. the street

  2098. to burn

  2099. out and

  2100. the coals

  2101. that really

  2102. cut fire

  2103. they're all

  2104. white.

  2105. They've all

  2106. been burning

  2107. but you

  2108. will

  2109. occasionally

  2110. find some

  2111. coal that's

  2112. still black.

  2113. Maybe it's

  2114. singed a little

  2115. bit from the

  2116. heat of the

  2117. surrounding

  2118. coals but it

  2119. never actually

  2120. cut fire.

  2121. When they're

  2122. all together

  2123. in the same

  2124. barbecue pit

  2125. it looks like

  2126. they're all

  2127. flaming hot

  2128. and they're

  2129. hot they've

  2130. all caught

  2131. fire but it's

  2132. when they are

  2133. scattered

  2134. individually

  2135. that's when

  2136. you see

  2137. oh that one

  2138. didn't really

  2139. ever catch.

  2140. Never had

  2141. fire in

  2142. itself.

  2143. What about

  2144. you?

  2145. Have you

  2146. caught the

  2147. fire of

  2148. God's love

  2149. in your

  2150. heart?

  2151. Do you

  2152. have root

  2153. in yourself

  2154. or are you

  2155. merely deriving

  2156. semblance of

  2157. life from your

  2158. environment by

  2159. proximity to

  2160. other Christians?

  2161. Can you

  2162. endure when

  2163. tribulation or

  2164. persecution arises

  2165. on account of

  2166. the word?

  2167. If you grew up

  2168. in a Christian

  2169. household with

  2170. godly parents

  2171. like I did

  2172. that is an

  2173. amazing blessing

  2174. but make sure

  2175. that your

  2176. faith is your

  2177. own.

  2178. That you

  2179. have root

  2180. in yourself.

  2181. Heed the

  2182. exhortation of

  2183. 2 Timothy 3

  2184. 14-15

  2185. but as for

  2186. you continue

  2187. continue

  2188. brothers and

  2189. sisters in

  2190. what you have

  2191. learned and

  2192. have firmly

  2193. believed knowing

  2194. from whom you

  2195. learned and how

  2196. from childhood you

  2197. have been acquainted

  2198. with the sacred

  2199. writings which are

  2200. able to make you

  2201. wise for salvation

  2202. through faith in

  2203. Christ Jesus.

  2204. hold on.

  2205. Remain there.

  2206. Stay there.

  2207. Still other

  2208. seeds Jesus

  2209. says in verse

  2210. 7 fell among

  2211. thorns and the

  2212. thorns grew up

  2213. and choked them.

  2214. Jesus explains in

  2215. verse 22 that this

  2216. is the one who

  2217. hears the word but

  2218. the cares of the

  2219. world and the

  2220. deceitfulness of

  2221. riches choke the

  2222. word and it

  2223. proves unfruitful.

  2224. what are the

  2225. cares of this

  2226. world that are

  2227. choking the

  2228. spiritual life

  2229. out of you

  2230. and depriving

  2231. you of the

  2232. nutrients that

  2233. you need.

  2234. Are you weary

  2235. with care about

  2236. your job,

  2237. your prospect,

  2238. your future,

  2239. your bank

  2240. account,

  2241. the ups and

  2242. downs of the

  2243. stock market?

  2244. are you

  2245. weighed down

  2246. with anxiety

  2247. and cares

  2248. about your

  2249. health,

  2250. your future,

  2251. your children?

  2252. Are you

  2253. weighed down

  2254. with cares

  2255. about the

  2256. world,

  2257. politics,

  2258. wars,

  2259. and rumors

  2260. of wars,

  2261. the condition

  2262. of our

  2263. country?

  2264. Are you

  2265. consumed with

  2266. cares about

  2267. what you eat

  2268. and drink,

  2269. the clothes you

  2270. wear,

  2271. what other

  2272. people are

  2273. thinking about

  2274. you or is

  2275. saying about

  2276. you?

  2277. Don't let

  2278. these things

  2279. choke the

  2280. spiritual life.

  2281. What about

  2282. the deceitfulness

  2283. of riches?

  2284. Have you been

  2285. deceived?

  2286. by the

  2287. false promise

  2288. that money,

  2289. that money

  2290. can buy you

  2291. happiness,

  2292. security?

  2293. Isn't that a

  2294. very interesting

  2295. description?

  2296. That the

  2297. deceitfulness

  2298. of riches.

  2299. Do you know

  2300. that money

  2301. is,

  2302. riches deceive

  2303. you?

  2304. They trick

  2305. you.

  2306. They trick

  2307. you into

  2308. thinking that

  2309. yes,

  2310. if you have

  2311. me,

  2312. if you have

  2313. riches,

  2314. you will be

  2315. secure.

  2316. If you have

  2317. me and you

  2318. can spend

  2319. me,

  2320. you will be

  2321. happy.

  2322. But it

  2323. deceives.

  2324. Are you

  2325. being deceived

  2326. by the

  2327. riches?

  2328. What desires

  2329. do you have

  2330. for this

  2331. sinful world

  2332. that are

  2333. choking the

  2334. word of

  2335. God in

  2336. your life

  2337. so that

  2338. it doesn't

  2339. bear fruit?

  2340. It could be

  2341. other things,

  2342. other things

  2343. that this

  2344. world offers.

  2345. Maybe for

  2346. some of you

  2347. it's romance

  2348. and fantasies

  2349. about romance.

  2350. Maybe it's

  2351. sex.

  2352. Maybe it's

  2353. fame.

  2354. Maybe it's

  2355. renown.

  2356. Maybe it's

  2357. your desire

  2358. for authority

  2359. and power.

  2360. Maybe it's

  2361. nothing so

  2362. grand.

  2363. Maybe you're

  2364. just consumed

  2365. with entertainment.

  2366. One diversion

  2367. after another.

  2368. One video

  2369. after another.

  2370. Are you so

  2371. preoccupied with

  2372. these things so

  2373. that your

  2374. spiritual appetites

  2375. are getting

  2376. duller and

  2377. duller?

  2378. Seemingly

  2379. perfectly harmless

  2380. things on their

  2381. own can do

  2382. a great deal

  2383. of spiritual

  2384. harm if

  2385. they siphon

  2386. away our

  2387. time and

  2388. attention and

  2389. energy from

  2390. the things of

  2391. God and

  2392. things eternal.

  2393. In C.S.

  2394. Lewis' book

  2395. Screwtape

  2396. Letters,

  2397. which is an

  2398. imagined

  2399. correspondence

  2400. between senior

  2401. devil Screwtape

  2402. and his

  2403. junior nephew,

  2404. junior devil

  2405. Wormwood,

  2406. Screwtape

  2407. advises Wormwood

  2408. in this manner.

  2409. You will say

  2410. that these are

  2411. very small

  2412. sins and

  2413. doubtless,

  2414. like all

  2415. young tempters,

  2416. you are

  2417. anxious to

  2418. be able to

  2419. report

  2420. spectacular

  2421. wickedness.

  2422. But do

  2423. remember,

  2424. the only

  2425. thing that

  2426. matters is

  2427. the extent

  2428. to which you

  2429. separate the

  2430. man from

  2431. the enemy.

  2432. Does not

  2433. matter how

  2434. small the

  2435. sins are,

  2436. provided that

  2437. their cumulative

  2438. effect is to

  2439. edge the man

  2440. away from the

  2441. light and out

  2442. into the

  2443. nothing.

  2444. Murder is

  2445. no better

  2446. than cards

  2447. if cards

  2448. can do

  2449. the trick.

  2450. indeed,

  2451. the safest

  2452. road to

  2453. hell is

  2454. the gradual

  2455. one,

  2456. the gentle

  2457. slope,

  2458. soft

  2459. underfoot,

  2460. without

  2461. sudden

  2462. turnings,

  2463. without

  2464. milestones,

  2465. without

  2466. signposts.

  2467. how many

  2468. Christians have

  2469. you known

  2470. in life

  2471. were professing

  2472. Christians who

  2473. fell away

  2474. from faith,

  2475. who fell

  2476. away in

  2477. that kind

  2478. of spectacular

  2479. fashion,

  2480. just turned

  2481. and then

  2482. going to

  2483. headlong

  2484. into

  2485. wickedness?

  2486. Probably

  2487. rare if

  2488. you've seen

  2489. any.

  2490. But how

  2491. many of

  2492. you've seen

  2493. take that

  2494. gradual

  2495. turn?

  2496. murder is

  2497. no better

  2498. than

  2499. cards if

  2500. cards can

  2501. do the

  2502. trick.

  2503. What are

  2504. the cards

  2505. in your

  2506. life that

  2507. are edging

  2508. you gradually

  2509. away from

  2510. God?

  2511. How tragic

  2512. would it be

  2513. for us to be

  2514. turned away

  2515. from God

  2516. by cards?

  2517. Beware of

  2518. these things.

  2519. If you do

  2520. not take care

  2521. to hear and

  2522. understand the

  2523. gospel,

  2524. if you do

  2525. not make

  2526. use of the

  2527. means of

  2528. grace that

  2529. God has

  2530. provided for

  2531. us to keep

  2532. the gospel

  2533. real in

  2534. our hearts,

  2535. the reading

  2536. and preaching

  2537. of his

  2538. word,

  2539. the worship,

  2540. corporate worship

  2541. and singing,

  2542. Bible reading,

  2543. the personal

  2544. time,

  2545. prayer,

  2546. corporate worship,

  2547. the fellowship

  2548. of believers.

  2549. If we're not

  2550. using these

  2551. things,

  2552. means of

  2553. grace that

  2554. God has

  2555. given to

  2556. stoke the

  2557. flame of

  2558. our love

  2559. for God

  2560. and the

  2561. love that

  2562. he has

  2563. shown us

  2564. in Christ,

  2565. then what

  2566. used to be

  2567. a raging

  2568. flame in

  2569. your heart

  2570. will soon

  2571. weaken and

  2572. then it

  2573. will begin to

  2574. smolder.

  2575. And then

  2576. soon he

  2577. will start

  2578. smoking and

  2579. snuff out.

  2580. Jesus,

  2581. whom you

  2582. thought you

  2583. shared loving

  2584. intimacy with,

  2585. will soon

  2586. seem distant

  2587. and aloof

  2588. and eventually

  2589. he will seem

  2590. unreal.

  2591. am I

  2592. suggesting

  2593. that the

  2594. elect,

  2595. the

  2596. regenerate,

  2597. those who

  2598. are chosen

  2599. by God

  2600. for salvation

  2601. can lose

  2602. their

  2603. salvation?

  2604. No,

  2605. I'm a

  2606. good

  2607. reformed

  2608. pastor,

  2609. I'm not

  2610. saying that.

  2611. Yeah.

  2612. Nevertheless,

  2613. a professing

  2614. Christian

  2615. who checks

  2616. all the

  2617. right boxes

  2618. and possesses

  2619. all outward

  2620. appearances of

  2621. faith can

  2622. fall away

  2623. from Christ.

  2624. The Bible

  2625. teaches that.

  2626. Apostasy is

  2627. a real sin.

  2628. For this

  2629. reason,

  2630. there is no

  2631. room in the

  2632. Christian life

  2633. for complacency

  2634. and false

  2635. assurance.

  2636. The warnings

  2637. and threats

  2638. of the Bible,

  2639. like what you

  2640. see even in

  2641. this parable,

  2642. are not

  2643. merely

  2644. hypothetical.

  2645. And if

  2646. some fall

  2647. away,

  2648. of course,

  2649. it wouldn't

  2650. mean that

  2651. they were

  2652. not truly

  2653. regenerate.

  2654. How do we

  2655. know that?

  2656. Because Hebrews

  2657. 3, 12-14

  2658. says this,

  2659. take care

  2660. brothers,

  2661. lest there

  2662. be in any

  2663. of you

  2664. an evil,

  2665. unbelieving

  2666. heart,

  2667. leading you

  2668. to fall

  2669. away from

  2670. the living

  2671. God,

  2672. but exhort

  2673. one another

  2674. every day

  2675. as long

  2676. as it

  2677. is called

  2678. today,

  2679. that none

  2680. of you

  2681. may be

  2682. hardened

  2683. by the

  2684. deceitfulness

  2685. of sin.

  2686. For we

  2687. have come

  2688. to share

  2689. in Christ,

  2690. if indeed

  2691. we hold

  2692. our original

  2693. confidence

  2694. firm to

  2695. the end.

  2696. Note the

  2697. tense of

  2698. that last,

  2699. that first,

  2700. the first

  2701. clause of

  2702. that last

  2703. sentence.

  2704. we have

  2705. come to

  2706. share in

  2707. Christ.

  2708. Perfect.

  2709. It's already

  2710. happened.

  2711. It does not

  2712. say that only

  2713. those who

  2714. persevere till

  2715. the end

  2716. will come

  2717. to share

  2718. in Christ.

  2719. It says

  2720. that we

  2721. have already

  2722. come to

  2723. share in

  2724. Christ if

  2725. we hold

  2726. our original

  2727. confidence

  2728. firm to

  2729. the end.

  2730. It's

  2731. perseverance

  2732. till the

  2733. end that

  2734. proves our

  2735. participation

  2736. in Christ,

  2737. that we

  2738. have partaken

  2739. in him,

  2740. have shared

  2741. him.

  2742. 1 John 2,

  2743. 19 is

  2744. similar.

  2745. They went

  2746. out from

  2747. us,

  2748. but they

  2749. were not

  2750. of us.

  2751. For if

  2752. they had

  2753. been of

  2754. us,

  2755. they would

  2756. have

  2757. continued

  2758. with us,

  2759. but they

  2760. went out

  2761. that it

  2762. might become

  2763. plain that

  2764. they all

  2765. are not

  2766. of us.

  2767. Referring

  2768. to those

  2769. who

  2770. apostatize

  2771. and abandon

  2772. the church

  2773. of Christ,

  2774. John says

  2775. that they

  2776. were never

  2777. one of

  2778. us.

  2779. For if

  2780. they had

  2781. been of

  2782. us,

  2783. one of

  2784. us,

  2785. then they

  2786. would have

  2787. continued

  2788. with us.

  2789. Apostasy

  2790. is proof

  2791. that they

  2792. never truly

  2793. belong to

  2794. the spiritual

  2795. family of

  2796. God.

  2797. So then,

  2798. what's the

  2799. relationship

  2800. between these

  2801. two things?

  2802. The more

  2803. you persevere

  2804. in faith

  2805. and obedience,

  2806. the more

  2807. you will be

  2808. assured of

  2809. your salvation.

  2810. And the

  2811. more you

  2812. are assured

  2813. and secure

  2814. in God's

  2815. grace,

  2816. the grace

  2817. of God

  2818. given to

  2819. you in

  2820. Jesus

  2821. Christ,

  2822. the more

  2823. you will

  2824. persevere

  2825. in faith

  2826. and obedience.

  2827. 2 Peter 1

    2 Peter 1:10–11

  2828. verses 10

  2829. to 11

  2830. says this,

  2831. Therefore,

  2832. brothers,

  2833. be all the

  2834. more diligent

  2835. to confirm

  2836. your calling

  2837. and election.

  2838. for if you

  2839. practice these

  2840. qualities,

  2841. you will

  2842. never fall.

  2843. For in this

  2844. way,

  2845. there will

  2846. be richly

  2847. provided for

  2848. you an

  2849. entrance into

  2850. the eternal

  2851. kingdom of

  2852. our Lord

  2853. and Savior

  2854. Jesus Christ.

  2855. We're meant

  2856. to confirm

  2857. our calling

  2858. and affection

  2859. by persevering

  2860. in faith

  2861. and good

  2862. works.

  2863. So,

  2864. brothers and

  2865. sisters,

  2866. are you

  2867. persevering

  2868. and holding

  2869. fast to

  2870. the gospel?

  2871. My prayer

  2872. is that all

  2873. of us will

  2874. be like the

  2875. seeds described

  2876. in verse

  2877. 8.

  2878. Other seeds

  2879. fell on

  2880. good soil

  2881. and produced

  2882. grain,

  2883. some a

  2884. hundredfold,

  2885. some 60,

  2886. some 30.

  2887. Jesus explains

  2888. in verse 23,

  2889. as for what

  2890. was sown

  2891. on good soil,

  2892. this is the

  2893. one who hears

  2894. the word

  2895. and understands

  2896. it.

  2897. He indeed

  2898. bears fruit

  2899. and yields,

  2900. in one case

  2901. a hundredfold,

  2902. in another 60,

  2903. in another 30.

  2904. This is the

  2905. only type of

  2906. seed out of

  2907. the four that

  2908. is saved

  2909. in the end.

  2910. We know

  2911. that because

  2912. it's the only

  2913. one that bears

  2914. fruit.

  2915. And according

  2916. to scripture,

  2917. all true

  2918. believers bear

  2919. fruit.

  2920. That's why

  2921. Jesus says

  2922. in John 15

    John 15:2

  2923. verse 2,

  2924. every branch

  2925. in me that

  2926. does not

  2927. bear fruit,

  2928. he takes

  2929. away.

  2930. And every

  2931. branch that

  2932. does bear

  2933. fruit,

  2934. he prunes

  2935. that he

  2936. may bear

  2937. more fruit.

  2938. How can

  2939. we become

  2940. fruitful?

  2941. In that

  2942. passage,

  2943. how does it

  2944. tell us

  2945. to bear

  2946. fruit?

  2947. It says

  2948. that happens

  2949. by abiding.

  2950. Jesus says,

  2951. whoever abides

  2952. in me and I

  2953. in him,

  2954. he it is that

  2955. bears much

  2956. fruit.

  2957. For apart

  2958. from me,

  2959. you can

  2960. do nothing.

  2961. What does it

  2962. mean to abide

  2963. in Jesus?

  2964. This leads

  2965. from one

  2966. question to

  2967. the next,

  2968. right?

  2969. Jesus says

  2970. in John 15,

  2971. 90,

  2972. then as the

  2973. father has

  2974. loved me,

  2975. so I have

  2976. loved you.

  2977. Abide in

  2978. my love.

  2979. We abide

  2980. in Christ

  2981. by abiding

  2982. in his love

  2983. and living

  2984. out of that

  2985. love in

  2986. obedience to

  2987. him.

  2988. it is

  2989. when we

  2990. are rooted

  2991. and grounded

  2992. in love.

  2993. It says

  2994. in Ephesians

  2995. 3,

  2996. 17,

  2997. when we

  2998. know the

  2999. love of

  3000. Christ that

  3001. surpasses

  3002. knowledge,

  3003. that's when,

  3004. according to

  3005. Ephesians 3,

  3006. we comprehend

  3007. the breadth

  3008. and length

  3009. and height

  3010. and depth

  3011. of God

  3012. and are

  3013. filled with

  3014. all the

  3015. fullness

  3016. of God.

  3017. You want

  3018. more of

  3019. God and

  3020. less of

  3021. me?

  3022. You want

  3023. more of

  3024. the Holy

  3025. Spirit to

  3026. fill you,

  3027. to enable

  3028. you to

  3029. bear fruit

  3030. in your

  3031. life?

  3032. Abide in

  3033. Christ by

  3034. abiding in

  3035. his love,

  3036. knowing and

  3037. seeing and

  3038. beholding and

  3039. believing the

  3040. great love that

  3041. Jesus showed

  3042. you on the

  3043. cross in

  3044. his death and

  3045. resurrection.

  3046. And by

  3047. this we know

  3048. love that he

  3049. laid down his

  3050. life for us,

  3051. 1 John 3,

  3052. 16,

  3053. by beholding

  3054. and believing

  3055. the gospel,

  3056. beholding and

  3057. believing the

  3058. glory of the

  3059. gospel in the

  3060. face of Jesus

  3061. Christ, that is

  3062. how we are

  3063. transformed.

  3064. That is how

  3065. we bear fruit.

  3066. That is how

  3067. we grow.

  3068. And we have

  3069. every reason to

  3070. hold that dear,

  3071. don't we?

  3072. What is the

  3073. seed that we're

  3074. planting?

  3075. What is the

  3076. seed that we're

  3077. holding on to

  3078. this gospel?

  3079. It's nothing

  3080. less than the

  3081. personal work of

  3082. Jesus Christ

  3083. himself.

  3084. Jesus said in

  3085. John 12, 24,

  3086. truly, truly, I

  3087. say to you,

  3088. unless a grain of

  3089. wheat falls into

  3090. the earth and

  3091. dies, it

  3092. remains alone.

  3093. But if it

  3094. dies, it

  3095. bears much

  3096. fruit.

  3097. Jesus was

  3098. speaking of

  3099. himself.

  3100. If Jesus did

  3101. not die on

  3102. that cross to

  3103. save us from

  3104. our sin, there

  3105. is no seed.

  3106. There is no

  3107. seed to be

  3108. planted in our

  3109. lives.

  3110. There is no

  3111. secrets of the

  3112. kingdom of heaven

  3113. to reveal.

  3114. it all hinged

  3115. on Jesus, the

  3116. scion of the

  3117. kingdom of God,

  3118. the heir, the

  3119. prince, to whom

  3120. belongs all of the

  3121. riches and

  3122. inheritance of

  3123. heaven.

  3124. Yet he divests

  3125. himself of the

  3126. riches of heaven,

  3127. of the glories of

  3128. heaven, to come and

  3129. die a common

  3130. criminal's death on

  3131. the cross, to give

3132. his life for us so

  3133. that in his death,

  3134. we might be

  3135. fruitful.

  3136. That's why he

  3137. gave himself for

  3138. us.

  3139. We're not saved by

  3140. our good work, we're

  3141. saved by the good

  3142. news of Jesus

  3143. Christ, but we are

  3144. saved for good

  3145. works, aren't we?

  3146. God wants us to

  3147. bear fruit a

  3148. hundredfold, a

  3149. sixtyfold, a

  3150. thirtyfold, and we

  3151. do that by following

  3152. in the footsteps of

  3153. Christ.

  3154. dying to ourselves,

  3155. dying to our sins,

  3156. carrying our cross

  3157. daily, and following

  3158. Jesus, and like

  3159. Jesus who died, the

  3160. kernel of wheat to

  3161. bring forth grain and

  3162. fruit and salvation

  3163. for all.

  3164. That's how we bear

  3165. fruit in this life.

  3166. Let's pray that we

  3167. may all do that.

  3168. Lord, we

3169. long to bear fruit for

  3170. you.

  3171. We don't want to be a

3172. fig tree that you come

3173. to and has no fruit,

  3174. fruit, to be fresh.

3175. Lord, we want to be

  3176. fruitful bows with

  3177. way down heavy with

  3178. bounty, with

  3179. innumerable fruits to

  3180. please you, to honor

  3181. you, to glorify you.

3182. And Lord, to that end,

3183. you have called us to

  3184. come and die.

  3185. Die to ourselves, die

  3186. to our selfishness, die

3187. to our sin, and that is

  3188. what we want, Lord.

3189. Let us die like the

3190. kernel of wheat and help

3191. us to behold Christ who

  3192. died for us.

  3193. that we might bear

  3194. fruit for you.

  3195. Make us a fruitful

  3196. church.

  3197. Preserve every single one

  3198. of my brothers and

  3199. sisters here.

3200. And for those who do

3201. not yet know you, Lord,

3202. give them ears to hear.

3203. In Jesus' name we pray.

  3204. Amen.
