  1. For those of you, as Sean mentioned, I lead Sovereign Grace Music.

  2. It's a ministry of Sovereign Grace Churches, our denomination.

  3. ! We seek to produce Christ-exalting songs and training for the church, capital C, from our local churches.

  4. And I've been a part of Sovereign Grace for almost 45 years now.

  5. And I'm doing what I do for about 25.

  6. And I bring you greetings from our sister church in Louisville, Kentucky.

  7. Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville.

  8. Even though we live in another part of the country, a very different part of the country,

  9. we share a common aim in life, and that is to make much of Jesus.

  10. His eternal word, His atoning work, and just to worship Him, to see as many people as possible worshiping Him.

  11. And we're sharing in that common aim.

  12. And that worship is actually what I want to talk to you about this morning.

  13. We're going to be reading from Psalm 145, looking at Psalm 145.

  14. So I ask you to turn there in whatever device or book you have.

  15. And I asked Sean if I could give a little introduction to the psalm before we read it.

  16. Because I want to put it in context.

  17. Anyone who's been to my house for dinner knows that my wife Julie is an amazing cook.

  18. She didn't start out as an amazing cook.

  19. But she is now an amazing cook.

  20. And we always have had a number of people living with us.

  21. After all our children moved out, we've had other people come and live with us.

  22. And whenever we sit down at one of Julie's amazing meals, eventually someone will say something like,

  23. This tastes so good.

  24. That chicken, it's so moist.

  25. I love the sauce you put in this.

  26. What spices are in here?

  27. Or what every cook wants to hear.

  28. Is there enough for seconds?

  29. That's the kind of cook she is.

  30. And wouldn't it be odd if at the end of the meal, no one had said anything about her cooking.

  31. If we talked about our day, talked about the weather, talked about our plans for the night.

  32. But never said anything about how delicious the meal was.

  33. That would be odd.

  34. It's because we tend to praise the things we enjoy.

  35. If we really like something, it's hard to stay quiet about it.

  36. Think of someone who's discovered a new band or seen a new movie or read a new book, found a new author.

  37. They just can't stop talking about it.

  38. Why is that?

  39. Why do we have to let other people know what we love so much?

  40. Why do we praise what we enjoy?

  41. British author C.S. Lewis gives an insightful answer to that question.

  42. He says, I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses, but completes the enjoyment.

  43. It is its appointed consummation.

  44. It's not out of compliment that lovers keep on telling one another how beautiful they are.

  45. The delight is incomplete until it is expressed.

  46. I'll be married 50 years next August to the most wonderful woman I've ever known.

  47. And I never tire of telling her why I love her so much.

  48. Because the greater the delight, the more intense, the more expressive, the more enduring the praise.

  49. So what if you found something that surpassed all of the delights?

  50. What if you found something that exceeded all your expectations?

  51. That overwhelmed you with its sheer beauty?

  52. Humbled you with its grandeur?

  53. And compelled your unrestrained, unending praise?

  54. Then you might write Psalm 145.

  55. It's an expression of praise so comprehensive and passionate it can take your breath away.

  56. And I hope it does.

  57. C.S. Lewis went on to say,

  58. The Scotch Catechism says that man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

  59. But we shall then know that these are the same thing.

  60. Fully to enjoy is to glorify.

  61. In commanding us to glorify him, God is inviting us to enjoy him.

  62. So in Psalm 145, God is inviting us to enjoy him.

  63. How?

  64. How do we enjoy God?

  65. By giving him praise.

  66. We have 150 psalms in the Bible.

  67. And in the first 144, the psalmist explored not only the topic of praising God,

  68. but things like opposition, enemies, loss, discouragement, unfulfilled hopes,

  69. enemies, devastation, and sin.

  70. I mentioned enemies twice because there's a lot of that.

  71. They're songs of confession, songs of doubt, songs of lament.

  72. They give us words to say as we wait for God to deliver us.

  73. We don't know what to do.

  74. But Psalm 145 is an overflow of praise.

  75. It is the only one of David's 73 psalms,

  76. and the only one of 150 psalms,

  77. that is entitled a psalm of praise.

  78. I didn't believe that when I first saw it.

  79. Some commentator said that.

  80. I said, no, no, no.

  81. So I looked through all the psalms.

  82. It's the only one that's called a psalm of praise.

  83. It's this rushing torrent of celebration and confidence and joy

  84. that serves as a hinge between the first 144 psalms

  85. and the last five psalms,

  86. which are called the hallelujah psalms,

  87. because they all begin with hallelujah.

  88. It's as though God is saying,

  89. if you trust me,

  90. if you know me,

  91. this is where your life is headed.

  92. That's good news.

  93. Psalm 145 is the song of one who sees God as he really is,

  94. and that view is staggering.

  95. And what we're going to see is that those who know that God is a king like no other

  96. won't rest until he receives praise like no other.

  97. That's what the psalmist is telling us.

  98. They know that their enjoyment of God must reach its consummation

  99. in specific, engaged, joy-filled, universal praise.

  100. So we're going to read it, and I'm going to ask you to stand,

  101. because this is God's word to us.

  102. It's not like I'd ask you to stand for my entire message,

  103. because it's me speaking.

  104. Hopefully it's the Lord speaking through me,

  105. but this is God's word.

  106. Psalm 145, a song of praise of David.

  107. And by the way, if you're feeling a little lethargic this morning,

  108. I hope by the end of this you are not,

  109. because it's coming.

  110. I will extol you, my God and King,

  111. and bless your name forever and ever.

  112. Every day I will bless you

  113. and praise your name forever and ever.

  114. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,

  115. and his greatness is unsearchable.

  116. One generation shall commend your works to another

  117. and shall declare your mighty acts

  118. on the glorious splendor of your majesty

  119. and on your wondrous works.

  120. I will meditate.

  121. They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,

  122. and I will declare your greatness.

  123. They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness

  124. and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

  125. The Lord is gracious and merciful,

  126. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

  127. The Lord is good to all,

  128. and his mercy is over all that he has made.

  129. All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,

  130. and all your saints shall bless you.

  131. They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom

  132. and tell of your power

  133. to make known to the children of man

  134. your mighty deeds

  135. and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

  136. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,

  137. and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

  138. The Lord is faithful in all his words

  139. and kind in all his works.

  140. The Lord upholds all who are falling

  141. and raises up all who are bowed down.

  142. The eyes of all look to you,

  143. and you give them their food in due season.

  144. You open your hand,

  145. you satisfy the desire of every living thing.

  146. The Lord is righteous in all his ways

  147. and kind in all his works.

  148. The Lord is near to all who call on him,

  149. to all who call on him in truth.

  150. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him.

  151. He also hears their cry and saves them.

  152. The Lord preserves all who love him,

  153. but all the wicked he will destroy.

  154. My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord

  155. and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.

  156. Father, would you open our ears and our hearts

  157. and our eyes to see things about you

  158. and about your son by the power of your spirit

  159. that we have not seen before

  160. to the degree that you want to show them to us now.

  161. May our joy in you be consummated

  162. in the praise of our king.

  163. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  164. Amen.

  165. Let's take our seats.

  166. David begins,

  167. I will extol you, my God and king.

  168. My God, the king.

  169. We're going to look at four ways

  170. that David extols God as king in this psalm.

  171. And I've titled this message,

  172. Praise Fit for a King.

  173. If you title your messages like I often do,

  174. that's the title.

  175. Praise Fit for a King.

  176. So we're going to look at four ways

  177. that God extols,

  178. that David extols God as king.

  179. And then we're going to take some time

  180. at the end

  181. to look at what kind of response

  182. is fitting for that kind of king.

  183. So two parts.

  184. First, David extols God as the great king.

  185. Verses three through six.

  186. Psalm opens up with this note

  187. of joyful celebration,

  188. summed up in Psalm three.

  189. Great is the Lord

  190. and greatly to be praised

  191. and his greatness is unsearchable.

  192. It's unsearchable,

  193. not in the sense that

  194. we shouldn't try to understand it,

  195. but in the sense that

  196. we'll never, ever reach the end of it.

  197. Some people would have us believe

  198. that it's humble to say

  199. that we really can't know God.

  200. He's too big.

  201. He's too mysterious.

  202. He's just beyond our comprehension.

  203. Well, yes,

  204. but

  205. God has revealed himself to us

  206. in Scripture,

  207. the written word of God,

  208. and in Jesus Christ,

  209. the living word of God,

  210. so we can know

  211. true things about him,

  212. but what the psalmist is saying is

  213. we'll never reach the end

  214. of how much we know about God.

  215. It's unsearchable.

  216. That's how great he is.

  217. Just look at the words

  218. David piles up

  219. to describe

  220. God's great reign.

  221. I will praise you

  222. for your mighty acts

  223. in verse 4.

  224. Verse 5,

  225. the glorious splendor

  226. of your majesty,

  227. your wondrous works,

  228. your awesome deeds,

  229. your greatness,

  230. your abundant goodness,

  231. your righteousness.

  232. Why does he take time

  233. to use so many words?

  234. Why does he just say,

  235. Lord is great,

  236. greatness is unsearchable.

  237. Woo!

  238. Woo!

  239. Well, because

  240. we,

  241. well,

  242. as a commentator,

  243. William Plumer says,

  244. unless we have great thoughts

  245. of God,

  246. our thoughts of sin

  247. will be low,

  248. our sense of obligation

  249. feeble,

  250. and our praise is dull.

  251. We won't think our sin

  252. is that bad.

  253. We won't have a right perspective

  254. on why God put us

  255. on this earth

  256. to begin with.

  257. And the worship of God

  258. will just feel boring.

  259. You know,

  260. I've heard people say

  261. sometimes,

  262. like,

  263. is heaven is like,

  264. we're just gonna sing to him?

  265. I don't think that's what

  266. the new heavens

  267. and the new earth is,

  268. but that sure shouldn't be

  269. your attitude

  270. if you know who God is.

  271. If you know that

  272. when he calls us to praise him,

  273. he's calling us

  274. to the highest joy

  275. we could ever conceive of.

  276. So we want to be really clear

  277. about how great God is.

  278. Even apart from

  279. what he does for us,

  280. even though we'll see

  281. that's crucial as well.

  282. But praise fit for a king

  283. begins with how great he is

  284. apart from anything

  285. he does for us.

  286. God was great

  287. before he created

  288. the universe,

  289. and he will be great

  290. forever.

  291. So he's the great king,

  292. and we exalt him

  293. as the great king.

  294. Second,

  295. David extols God

  296. as the good king.

  297. Verses 7 through 10.

  298. I love this.

  299. Verse 7.

  300. They shall pour forth

  301. the fame of your

  302. abundant goodness

  303. and shall sing aloud

  304. of your righteousness.

  305. The Lord is gracious

  306. and merciful,

  307. slow to anger

  308. and abounding

  309. in steadfast love.

  310. If you know your Bible,

  311. you'll know those words

  312. in verse 8.

  313. The Lord is gracious

  314. and merciful,

  315. slow to anger

  316. and abounding

  317. in steadfast love.

  318. Those are the words

  319. that God proclaimed

  320. to Moses

  321. after Israel

  322. had prostituted themselves

  323. and worshiped

  324. a golden calf

  325. in Exodus 32.

  326. Those words come

  327. from Exodus 34.

  328. At that moment,

  329. after God had delivered

  330. Israel from Egypt,

  331. right through the Red Sea,

  332. Pharaoh's army lay dead

  333. in the Red Sea,

  334. never coming out of there,

  335. they're delivered,

  336. they sing a song

  337. of deliverance.

  338. He calls them

  339. to Mount Sinai.

  340. What do they do?

  341. They worship

  342. a golden calf.

  343. So don't you think

  344. it would be appropriate

  345. at that moment

  346. for God to just say,

  347. I'm going to wipe you out.

  348. In fact,

  349. he told Moses,

  350. he said,

  351. you know what,

  352. let me do that

  353. and we'll just start over.

  354. And Moses says,

  355. oh no God,

  356. these are your people.

  357. What would it be

  358. if the nation said

  359. he brought them out

  360. but couldn't deliver them?

  361. And God was just

  362. showing Moses his heart

  363. which was to do just that.

  364. But he doesn't wipe them out.

  365. He says,

  366. I am merciful.

  367. I'm gracious.

  368. I'm slow to anger.

  369. I'm abounding

  370. in steadfast love.

  371. God doesn't want

  372. to just be known

  373. as the great king.

  374. He doesn't want us

  375. to know that he's

  376. really great

  377. and transcendent

  378. and out there

  379. and amazing

  380. and high

  381. and lifted up.

  382. He wants us to know

  383. he's the good

  384. and merciful king.

  385. And David goes on

  386. to expand

  387. what that means.

  388. Verse 9,

  389. the Lord is good

  390. to all

  391. and his mercy

  392. is over all

  393. that he has made.

  394. You know,

  395. in this psalm,

  396. it's almost 20 times

  397. that David uses

  398. the word all

  399. or every.

  400. He wants us to get

  401. this isn't just about

  402. an individual

  403. or a fleeting moment.

  404. This is all.

  405. The Lord is good

  406. to all.

  407. His mercy

  408. is over all

  409. that he has made.

  410. Verse 8 speaks

  411. of God's goodness

  412. to his people

  413. but this verse

  414. speaks of God's goodness

  415. to everyone.

  416. He's saying

  417. God is so good

  418. because we can

  419. see his goodness

  420. everywhere.

  421. All over the world

  422. God's providing

  423. sights and sounds

  424. that astound

  425. and delight

  426. and propel us

  427. to amazement

  428. and wonder.

  429. Think of the Grand Canyon.

  430. You think of

  431. Mount Everest.

  432. You think of

  433. the Hawaiian sunsets.

  434. You think of

  435. just what happens

  436. this time

  437. every year

  438. in Boston

  439. to the trees.

  440. Do you realize

  441. that God

  442. didn't have to

  443. make the trees

  444. become beautiful

  445. in autumn?

  446. They could have

  447. just like been green

  448. and just turned brown.

  449. But they don't.

  450. Why?

  451. Because God's so good.

  452. See his goodness

  453. everywhere.

  454. Rivers and oceans

  455. teem with creatures

  456. that are

  457. fascinatingly beautiful

  458. and some people

  459. think they're good

  460. to eat.

  461. I don't personally

  462. think that

  463. but some people

  464. do.

  465. Fruits and vegetables

  466. and grains

  467. grow in abundance.

  468. We just took a trip

  469. by God's grace

  470. and mercy

  471. to Italy

  472. with five of our

  473. children.

  474. It was amazing.

  475. The golden fields

  476. of wheat,

  477. the orchards,

  478. the olive groves

  479. and grapevines

  480. and it's just

  481. amazing.

  482. God's given us

  483. these amazing

  484. tastes and smells

  485. and colors

  486. and textures

  487. to enjoy.

  488. He is so good.

  489. But you know

  490. what shows us

  491. the most

  492. that he's good?

  493. Is that he doesn't

  494. destroy us

  495. every time we sin.

  496. That's how we know

  497. he's good.

  498. One of the most

  499. overlooked

  500. signs,

  501. testimonies

  502. to God's goodness

  503. is his patience.

  504. Amazing patience

  505. with sinful people.

  506. He bears with us.

  507. He blesses us.

  508. He sustains us

  509. and we don't

  510. deserve any of it.

  511. It's all

  512. his goodness

  513. and mercy.

  514. In 2009,

  515. an Air France

  516. plane was flying

  517. from Rio de Janeiro

  518. to Paris

  519. when a thunderstorm

  520. caused it

  521. to plummet

  522. into the Atlantic Ocean.

  523. All 228 passengers

  524. and crew

  525. were killed.

  526. People were

  527. incensed.

  528. Social media

  529. blew up.

  530. Where was God?

  531. Well,

  532. no one

  533. noticed

  534. when 100,000

  535. flights

  536. a day

  537. take off

  538. with no problem

  539. and make it

  540. to their destination.

  541. filled

  542. with people

  543. who ignore,

  544. minimize,

  545. and despise

  546. the God

  547. who keeps

  548. that plane

  549. in the air.

  550. That's patience.

  551. That's goodness.

  552. And if we

  553. continue to ignore,

  554. mock,

  555. and sin

  556. against God,

  557. why doesn't

  558. that happen

  559. to all of us?

  560. Because God's

  561. good to all

  562. and his mercy

  563. is over

  564. all he has made.

  565. So verse 10

  566. is a response.

  567. It says,

  568. all God's work

  569. give thanks to him

  570. and his saints

  571. bless him.

  572. So when God's works

  573. give thanks to him,

  574. they don't use words.

  575. They just do

  576. what they were

  577. intended to do.

  578. Stars shine,

  579. oceans roar,

  580. birds sing.

  581. That's what they do.

  582. They're giving glory

  583. to God.

  584. They're giving thanks.

  585. But the saints,

  586. God's people,

  587. we have better reasons

  588. to praise God,

  589. to bless God,

  590. to thank him.

  591. We've been redeemed

  592. through the blood

  593. of the Lamb,

  594. through the death

  595. and resurrection

  596. of Jesus Christ.

  597. We are no longer

  598. under judgment.

  599. We're objects

  600. of his affection.

  601. Our hearts

  602. have been changed

  603. so that we really

  604. do love to be with him.

  605. We really do love

  606. to know him.

  607. And at one time,

  608. we only wanted

  609. to praise ourselves.

  610. Now we want to praise him.

  611. That's a miracle.

  612. He watches over

  613. our every breath,

  614. every breath,

  615. the breath you just took.

  616. He gave that to you.

  617. There's no reason

  618. why we shouldn't

  619. just die.

  620. But God's good.

  621. And his saints

  622. bless him.

  623. There's no one like him.

  624. And those who know

  625. that God is a king

  626. like no other

  627. will not rest

  628. until he receives

  629. praise like no other.

  630. Number three.

  631. He's the great king,

  632. he's the good king,

  633. and he's the powerful king.

  634. verses 11 through 13.

  635. They shall speak

  636. of the glory

  637. of your kingdom

  638. and tell of your power

  639. to make known

  640. to the children of man

  641. your mighty deeds

  642. and the glorious splendor

  643. of your kingdom.

  644. Your kingdom's

  645. an everlasting kingdom,

  646. and your dominion

  647. endures throughout

  648. all generations.

  649. The Lord is faithful

  650. in all his words

  651. and kind in all his works.

  652. God's kingdom

  653. is marked by power.

  654. His reign

  655. has no term limits.

  656. He's not nervous

  657. about anyone

  658. voting him out

  659. or taking over

  660. his throne.

  661. Think of the great

  662. rulers of history.

  663. They all have

  664. the great attached

  665. to them.

  666. Cyrus the great,

  667. Alexander the great,

  668. Julius Caesar,

  669. well, they just

  670. called him great,

  671. Constantine the great,

  672. Charlemagne the great,

  673. Catherine the great.

  674. Turns out they

  675. weren't so great

  676. after all.

  677. They're all dead.

  678. Whether through election,

  679. appointment,

  680. or death,

  681. other people

  682. are sitting

  683. on their thrones,

  684. but they don't even

  685. exist anymore

  686. at those thrones.

  687. No one else

  688. will ever sit

  689. on God's throne.

  690. God has always

  691. ruled.

  692. He always will rule.

  693. He controls the stars.

  694. He controls the atoms.

  695. He rules presidents

  696. and peasants.

  697. He can move mountains.

  698. He can move hearts.

  699. There is nothing

  700. our God cannot do.

  701. He rules over tsunamis

  702. and earthquakes

  703. and floods and fires.

  704. So those who know him

  705. and love him

  706. speak of the glory

  707. of his kingdom

  708. and tell of his power.

  709. He's a powerful king.

  710. And after praising God

  711. for his rule

  712. and his dominion

  713. and his kingship

  714. and his power,

  715. one might expect

  716. David to go on

  717. and tell us more

  718. about that.

  719. How great is he?

  720. How big?

  721. How mighty?

  722. How powerful?

  723. But to show us

  724. how great God

  725. really is,

  726. David shows us

  727. that God

  728. has also revealed

  729. himself as,

  730. number four,

  731. the gracious king.

  732. verses 14 through 20.

  733. He's the great king,

  734. the good king,

  735. the powerful king,

  736. and he's the gracious king.

  737. Grace speaks of

  738. undeserved,

  739. unmerited favor.

  740. We see it in verse 14.

  741. The Lord upholds

  742. all who are falling

  743. and raises up

  744. all who are bowed down.

  745. That isn't a promise

  746. that no one

  747. will ever fall

  748. or that no one

  749. will ever be

  750. bowed down.

  751. It's saying that

  752. if someone recovers

  753. from a fall

  754. or is kept

  755. through trials

  756. or is raised up

  757. from humbling circumstances,

  758. the Lord

  759. is the one

  760. who's done it.

  761. We can't claim

  762. credit for that.

  763. God is intimately

  764. involved

  765. in sustaining

  766. and restoring

  767. everything he's made.

  768. The next verse,

  769. the eyes of all

  770. look to you,

  771. verse 15,

  772. the eyes of all

  773. look to you

  774. and you give them

  775. their food

  776. in due season.

  777. You open your hand.

  778. You satisfy the desire

  779. of every living thing.

  780. Those verses

  781. remind us

  782. that everything

  783. in creation

  784. is absolutely

  785. dependent on God

  786. for their existence.

  787. As Acts 17, 28 says,

  788. in him

  789. we live

  790. and move

  791. and have our being.

  792. God is

  793. lavish

  794. in his generosity,

  795. open-handed

  796. in his blessings

  797. and free

  798. in his giving.

  799. It's amazing

  800. how we don't see him

  801. that way so often.

  802. Sean mentioned

  803. Julie and I

  804. raised six kids

  805. by God's grace

  806. and even with one kid,

  807. I have a fresh

  808. appreciation for this

  809. as a grandparent.

  810. Even with one kid,

  811. life can be overwhelming.

  812. The amount of time

  813. and energy

  814. and effort

  815. and sweat

  816. and wisdom

  817. and money

  818. and thought

  819. it takes just to provide

  820. for one child

  821. is just overwhelming

  822. sometimes.

  823. And I remember

  824. as we had

  825. maybe three or four children,

  826. just money

  827. felt just really tight

  828. all the time.

  829. And when we'd eat out,

  830. we had certain rules.

  831. Just water here.

  832. Okay,

  833. we're splitting

  834. the big fry.

  835. Okay,

  836. no,

  837. don't get that.

  838. One time

  839. we were eating out

  840. with Julie's dad

  841. and his wife

  842. and I leaned over

  843. to the kids

  844. and said,

  845. just get whatever

  846. you want.

  847. And my 10-year-old son,

  848. Jordan,

  849. he looked right at me

  850. and said,

  851. you're not paying

  852. for this,

  853. are you?

  854. Try not to take

  855. that personally.

  856. Governments

  857. spend

  858. countless hours,

  859. organize

  860. countless

  861. committees,

  862. make countless

  863. laws to make sure

  864. that people

  865. are provided for.

  866. It's happening

  867. right now

  868. in our government.

  869. Often with

  870. little success.

  871. God doesn't

  872. labor.

  873. He doesn't

  874. worry.

  875. He doesn't

  876. break into

  877. sweat,

  878. doesn't

  879. strive.

  880. It's what the

  881. psalm says.

  882. He opens

  883. his hand.

  884. He satisfies

  885. the desire

  886. of every

  887. living thing.

  888. That's grace.

  889. He goes on

  890. to say,

  891. the Lord

  892. is righteous

  893. in all

  894. his ways

  895. and kind

  896. in all

  897. his works.

  898. Duh.

  899. Yeah,

  900. we're seeing

  901. that.

  902. But God

  903. shows a

  904. unique grace

  905. to his

  906. people.

  907. people.

  908. Is God

  909. kind to

  910. all?

  911. Is he

  912. good to

  913. all?

  914. Yes.

  915. That's what

  916. the psalmist

  917. says.

  918. That's what

  919. God's word

  920. says.

  921. But J.I.

  922. Packer

  923. goes on to

  924. explain,

  925. God is

  926. good to

  927. all in

  928. some ways

  929. and to

  930. some

  931. in all

  932. ways.

  933. He's

  934. good to

  935. all in

  936. some ways

  937. and to

  938. some

  939. in

  940. all

  941. ways.

  942. And the

  943. some

  944. that he

  945. refers to

  946. are those

  947. who know

  948. his

  949. steadfast

  950. love.

  951. Those who

  952. know his

  953. grace.

  954. Those who

  955. know his

  956. grace and

  957. have received

  958. his grace.

  959. And these

  960. are the

  961. promises God

  962. makes to

  963. his own.

  964. And notice

  965. how the

  966. psalmist

  967. starts to

  968. put qualifiers

  969. on these

  970. actions.

  971. Verse 18.

  972. The Lord

  973. is near

  974. to all

  975. who call

  976. on him.

  977. To all

  978. who call

  979. on him

  980. in truth.

  981. Not just

  982. all who

  983. call on him,

  984. it's to all

  985. who call

  986. on him

  987. in truth.

  988. Those who

  989. know him

  990. as he

  991. really is.

  992. God

  993. doesn't

  994. promise to

  995. be near

  996. us when

  997. we feel

  998. like he

  999. should be

  1000. giving us

  1001. what we

  1002. want

  1003. anywhere,

  1004. anytime.

  1005. No,

  1006. those who

  1007. call on

  1008. the Lord

  1009. in truth

  1010. are those

  1011. who really

  1012. know him

  1013. through his

  1014. word,

  1015. who humble

  1016. themselves to

  1017. believe him

  1018. and trust

  1019. him and

  1020. follow him.

  1021. And for

  1022. Christians,

  1023. to call on

  1024. the Lord

  1025. in truth

  1026. means to

  1027. call on

  1028. him by

  1029. him who

  1030. is the

  1031. truth,

  1032. Jesus

  1033. Christ.

  1034. We bring

  1035. all our

  1036. requests in

  1037. the arms

  1038. of Jesus

  1039. Christ and

  1040. he actually

  1041. carries us

  1042. there.

  1043. Verse 19.

  1044. He fulfills

  1045. the desire

  1046. of those

  1047. who fear

  1048. him.

  1049. He also

  1050. hears their

  1051. cry and

  1052. saves them.

  1053. Now back

  1054. in verse

  1055. 16, we

  1056. just looked

  1057. at it,

  1058. we're told

  1059. the Lord

  1060. satisfies the

  1061. desire of

  1062. every living

  1063. thing, but

  1064. here God

  1065. fulfills the

  1066. desire of

  1067. those who

  1068. fear him.

  1069. Those who

  1070. fear him

  1071. are the

  1072. ones who

  1073. want God

  1074. to be

  1075. glorified.

  1076. Those who

  1077. fear him

  1078. are the

  1079. ones who

  1080. want to

  1081. walk in

  1082. God's

  1083. ways.

  1084. Those who

  1085. fear him

  1086. are the

  1087. ones who

  1088. want others

  1089. to know

  1090. God's

  1091. forgiveness.

  1092. They want

  1093. to see the

  1094. name of

  1095. Jesus lifted

  1096. up.

  1097. So God

  1098. hears their

  1099. cry and

  1100. he saves

  1101. them.

  1102. And he

  1103. often saves

  1104. them from

  1105. their situation

  1106. but ultimately

  1107. he saves them

  1108. from his

  1109. wrath and

  1110. from their

  1111. sins.

  1112. That's the

  1113. kind of

  1114. saving we

  1115. want.

  1116. Not just

  1117. to be saved

  1118. out of our

  1119. current

  1120. circumstance

  1121. but to

  1122. save from

  1123. his just

  1124. condemnation.

  1125. And verse

  1126. 20 contains

  1127. one more

  1128. promise.

  1129. The Lord

  1130. preserves

  1131. all who

  1132. love him

  1133. but all

  1134. the wicked

  1135. he will

  1136. destroy.

  1137. Did you

  1138. notice that's

  1139. the first

  1140. mention of

  1141. evil in

  1142. the psalm?

  1143. The first

  1144. time anything

  1145. is out of

  1146. sync.

  1147. It's as

  1148. though the

  1149. psalmist

  1150. wanted to

  1151. keep us

  1152. focused on

  1153. God

  1154. himself

  1155. but finally

  1156. has to

  1157. say something

  1158. about the

  1159. fact that

  1160. not everyone

  1161. believes in

  1162. this God.

  1163. Not everyone

  1164. loves this

  1165. God.

  1166. Not everyone

  1167. wants to

  1168. follow this

  1169. God or

  1170. even

  1171. acknowledges

  1172. the existence

  1173. of this

  1174. God.

  1175. God

  1176. has

  1177. enemies.

  1178. But we

  1179. don't need

  1180. to be

  1181. afraid of

  1182. him.

  1183. We don't

  1184. need to be

  1185. afraid of

  1186. him.

  1187. There's a

  1188. verse in

  1189. Psalm 112

  1190. that has

  1191. ministered

  1192. grace to

  1193. my soul

  1194. repeatedly

  1195. when I

  1196. am in a

  1197. situation

  1198. where I'm

  1199. fearing what's

  1200. going to

  1201. happen.

  1202. Fearing what

  1203. my enemies

  1204. might do

  1205. to me.

  1206. Psalm

    Psalms 112:7

  1207. 112

  1208. verse 7

  1209. says he

  1210. is not

  1211. afraid.

  1212. Speaking of

  1213. the man who

  1214. fears the

  1215. Lord or

  1216. woman who

  1217. fears the

  1218. Lord,

  1219. he's not

  1220. afraid of

  1221. bad news.

  1222. What?

  1223. His heart

  1224. is firm

  1225. trusting in

  1226. the Lord.

  1227. His heart

  1228. is steady.

  1229. He will

  1230. not be

  1231. afraid until

  1232. he looks

  1233. in triumph

  1234. on his

  1235. adversaries.

  1236. You know

  1237. when we're

  1238. going to

  1239. look in

  1240. triumph on

  1241. our

  1242. adversaries?

  1243. It may

  1244. be in

  1245. this life

  1246. at different

  1247. times,

  1248. but you

  1249. know when

  1250. it's really

  1251. going to

  1252. be?

  1253. When all

  1254. the wicked

  1255. he will

  1256. destroy.

  1257. God

  1258. protects us

  1259. from our

  1260. enemies.

  1261. He ensures,

  1262. he will

  1263. ensure that

  1264. the kingdom

  1265. of heaven

  1266. is made

  1267. up exclusively

  1268. of those

  1269. who love

  1270. the king,

  1271. those who

  1272. treasure the

  1273. king,

  1274. those who

  1275. prize the

  1276. king,

  1277. those who

  1278. want to

  1279. obey the

  1280. king.

  1281. In Luke

  1282. 21,

  1283. Jesus is

  1284. talking to

  1285. the disciples

  1286. about how

  1287. they will

  1288. encounter

  1289. situations

  1290. where some

  1291. of them will

  1292. be put to

  1293. death.

  1294. And then a

  1295. verse later

  1296. he says,

  1297. but no one

  1298. will be able

  1299. to harm a

  1300. hair of your

  1301. head.

  1302. And I'm

  1303. thinking,

  1304. Jesus,

  1305. if they

  1306. put me

  1307. to death

  1308. that sounds

  1309. like they're

  1310. harming every

  1311. hair of my

  1312. head.

  1313. But Jesus

  1314. knows there

  1315. is a life

  1316. that others

  1317. can't take

  1318. from us.

  1319. And that's

  1320. what he

  1321. promises.

  1322. But that

  1323. promise of

  1324. protection for

  1325. us is also

  1326. a warning.

  1327. Those who

  1328. refuse the

  1329. mercy and

  1330. grace of

  1331. God that

  1332. we've been

  1333. talking about

  1334. will receive

  1335. exactly what

  1336. they deserve.

  1337. And that is

  1338. the righteous

  1339. punishment for

  1340. their sin and

  1341. rebellion.

  1342. They will be

  1343. destroyed.

  1344. You can't

  1345. fight the

  1346. king and

  1347. win.

  1348. But there's

  1349. always hope.

  1350. We can turn

  1351. to Jesus

  1352. Christ and

  1353. find refuge in

  1354. this good,

  1355. great,

  1356. powerful,

  1357. and gracious

  1358. king.

  1359. Which brings

  1360. us to the

  1361. final question.

  1362. What is the

  1363. fitting response

  1364. to this

  1365. king?

  1366. God is

  1367. so great

  1368. and so

  1369. good and

  1370. so powerful

  1371. and so

  1372. gracious.

  1373. What kind

  1374. of praise

  1375. is fit for

  1376. a king?

  1377. This one

  1378. gives you

  1379. four ways,

  1380. four characteristics

  1381. of the way

  1382. we should

  1383. respond.

  1384. First,

  1385. it's

  1386. personal.

  1387. David is

  1388. the king,

  1389. but he

  1390. recognizes an

  1391. infinitely

  1392. greater king.

  1393. And he

  1394. starts out,

  1395. I will

  1396. extol you,

  1397. my God

  1398. and king.

  1399. He doesn't

  1400. want to watch

  1401. everybody else

  1402. around him

  1403. praise God

  1404. for him.

  1405. This is what he

  1406. says in the

  1407. beginning of the

  1408. psalm.

  1409. I will exalt,

  1410. I will bless,

  1411. I will praise,

  1412. I will meditate,

  1413. I will sing.

  1414. David is not

  1415. going to stand

  1416. in the midst

  1417. of a crowd

  1418. and watch

  1419. other people,

  1420. as his arms

  1421. are folded,

  1422. watch other

  1423. people praise

  1424. God and

  1425. love me.

  1426. He says,

  1427. I'm not

  1428. going to do

  1429. that.

  1430. I can't do

  1431. that.

  1432. It's personal.

  1433. This is what

  1434. God means to

  1435. me.

  1436. This is how

  1437. God has

  1438. revealed himself

  1439. to me.

  1440. He's not

  1441. going to be

  1442. swallowed up

  1443. in the crowd

  1444. no matter

  1445. how big

  1446. the crowd

  1447. is.

  1448. It's

  1449. personal.

  1450. Second,

  1451. and this

  1452. will be

  1453. obvious,

  1454. it's

  1455. passionate.

  1456. It's

  1457. passionate

  1458. praise.

  1459. Verse

  1460. two,

  1461. every day

  1462. I will

  1463. bless you.

  1464. Every day

  1465. I will

  1466. bless you.

  1467. Not just

  1468. occasionally

  1469. or when I

  1470. feel like

  1471. it.

  1472. Every day

  1473. I will

  1474. bless you.

  1475. Certainly

  1476. on the

  1477. good days.

  1478. But also

  1479. on the

  1480. bad days.

  1481. The hard

  1482. days.

  1483. The turbulent

  1484. days.

  1485. The confusing

  1486. days.

  1487. The painful

  1488. days.

  1489. The sad

  1490. days.

  1491. The disappointing

  1492. days.

  1493. The discouraging

  1494. days.

  1495. The I'm

  1496. not sure

  1497. I can

  1498. go on

  1499. anymore

  1500. days.

  1501. Every day.

  1502. I will

  1503. bless you.

  1504. God.

  1505. Because

  1506. his praise

  1507. aligns with

  1508. what is

  1509. true about

  1510. God.

  1511. God is

  1512. always

  1513. worthy.

  1514. So

  1515. David says,

  1516. I'm going

  1517. to always

  1518. praise you.

  1519. And I'm

  1520. going to

  1521. do it

  1522. with all

  1523. my heart.

  1524. Not

  1525. going to

  1526. be half

  1527. hearted.

  1528. Not

  1529. going to

  1530. be lazy.

  1531. Not

  1532. going to

  1533. be quiet.

  1534. It's

  1535. every day

  1536. and it's

  1537. exuberant.

  1538. It's

  1539. just in

  1540. the Bible

  1541. guys.

  1542. Verse

  1543. seven.

  1544. They

  1545. shall

  1546. pour

  1547. forth

  1548. the

  1549. fame

  1550. of

  1551. your

  1552. abundant

  1553. over

  1554. the

  1555. top.

  1556. This

  1557. is how

  1558. God

  1559. calls us

  1560. to

  1561. praise

  1562. him.

  1563. Now I

  1564. know what

  1565. some of

  1566. you are

  1567. thinking.

  1568. I grew

  1569. up

  1570. Presbyterian.

  1571. I'm an

  1572. introvert.

  1573. What would

  1574. my friends

  1575. think?

  1576. It's just

  1577. not my

  1578. style.

  1579. I'm kind

  1580. of new

  1581. here.

  1582. You just

  1583. don't know

  1584. me very

  1585. well.

  1586. It

  1587. wouldn't be

  1588. cool.

  1589. our

  1590. response

  1591. to God,

  1592. our

  1593. praise of

  1594. God,

  1595. praise fit

  1596. for

  1597. King,

  1598. is not

  1599. determined

  1600. by our

  1601. personality

  1602. or our

  1603. preferences

  1604. or our

  1605. background

  1606. or our

  1607. circumstances

  1608. but by

  1609. God's

  1610. greatness.

  1611. We just

  1612. don't see

  1613. how great

  1614. he is.

  1615. David

  1616. doesn't

  1617. want to

  1618. keep his

  1619. personal

  1620. and passionate

  1621. praise to

  1622. himself.

  1623. It's not

  1624. only personal

  1625. and passionate,

  1626. it's passed

  1627. on.

  1628. It's a

  1629. third

  1630. characteristic

  1631. of a

  1632. fitting

  1633. response.

  1634. One

  1635. generation

  1636. shall commend

  1637. your works

  1638. to another

  1639. and shall

  1640. declare

  1641. your mighty

  1642. acts.

  1643. David's

  1644. describing the

  1645. godly desire

  1646. to pass on

  1647. what is

  1648. true and

  1649. praiseworthy

  1650. about God

  1651. to future

  1652. generations.

  1653. Our

  1654. children,

  1655. as we were

  1656. just hearing

  1657. about.

  1658. Our

  1659. grandchildren,

  1660. our

  1661. great

  1662. grandchildren.

  1663. And notice

  1664. we're not

  1665. just passing

  1666. on our

  1667. practices

  1668. or our

  1669. preferences

  1670. or our

  1671. traditions

  1672. as time

  1673. proven as

  1674. they may

  1675. be.

  1676. We're

  1677. pressing on

  1678. praise for

  1679. God's

  1680. works so

  1681. that every

  1682. generation

  1683. might have an

  1684. understanding

  1685. that God is

  1686. always great,

  1687. always good,

  1688. always powerful,

  1689. always gracious,

  1690. not just to you

  1691. all,

  1692. but to us.

  1693. That's who he

  1694. is.

  1695. And those

  1696. who know

  1697. God is a

  1698. king like

  1699. no other

  1700. will not

  1701. rest until

  1702. he receives

  1703. praise like

  1704. no other

  1705. from every

  1706. generation.

  1707. Every

  1708. generation.

  1709. Finally,

  1710. our response

  1711. is eternal.

  1712. David begins

  1713. and ends the

  1714. psalm with

  1715. eternity in

  1716. view.

  1717. It starts

  1718. off,

  1719. I will

  1720. extol you,

  1721. my God

  1722. and king,

  1723. and bless

  1724. your name

  1725. forever and

  1726. ever.

  1727. That's what I'm

  1728. going to do.

  1729. Look how he

  1730. ends.

  1731. My mouth

  1732. will speak

  1733. the praise

  1734. of the Lord

  1735. and let all

  1736. flesh bless

  1737. his holy

  1738. name

  1739. forever and

  1740. ever.

  1741. God's praise

  1742. can't be

  1743. contained to

  1744. a meeting

  1745. or a

  1746. calendar year

  1747. or a

  1748. century

  1749. or time

  1750. itself.

  1751. We will

  1752. never,

  1753. ever reach

  1754. the end

  1755. of it.

  1756. No one

  1757. in the new

  1758. heavens and

  1759. the new

  1760. earth is

  1761. going to

  1762. look at

  1763. their watch

  1764. and say,

  1765. aren't we

  1766. about done

  1767. yet?

  1768. Isn't

  1769. that,

  1770. like haven't

  1771. we covered

  1772. everything?

  1773. They won't

  1774. be able to

  1775. do that

  1776. because we'll

  1777. see him

  1778. as he

  1779. really is.

  1780. So at the

  1781. end,

  1782. David prays,

  1783. let all

  1784. flesh bless

  1785. his holy

  1786. name forever

  1787. and ever.

  1788. And we

  1789. know that

  1790. prayer will

  1791. be answered

  1792. because God

  1793. has pulled

  1794. back the

  1795. curtain of

  1796. heaven and

  1797. showed us

  1798. what's

  1799. happening and

  1800. what will

  1801. always be

  1802. happening.

  1803. Jesus

  1804. Christ has

  1805. opened the

  1806. scroll as

  1807. we sang about

  1808. earlier.

  1809. He's ensured

  1810. that through

  1811. his redeeming

  1812. work,

  1813. God will

  1814. have a

  1815. people who

  1816. will bless

  1817. his name

  1818. forever and

  1819. ever.

  1820. Revelation 5,

  1821. 13 and 14,

  1822. I heard every

  1823. creature in

  1824. heaven and

  1825. on earth and

  1826. under the

  1827. earth and

  1828. in the sea

  1829. and all

  1830. that is in

  1831. them saying

  1832. to him who

  1833. sits on the

  1834. throne and

  1835. to the

  1836. lamb,

  1837. be blessing

  1838. and honor

  1839. and glory

  1840. and might

  1841. forever and

  1842. ever.

  1843. And for

  1844. those of us

  1845. here who

  1846. have experienced

  1847. God's life

  1848. transforming grace

  1849. through Christ,

  1850. we sit here

  1851. confident that

  1852. we will be

  1853. among that

  1854. multitude.

  1855. But it's

  1856. here we

  1857. realize this

  1858. is a psalm

  1859. that none of

  1860. us in

  1861. integrity could

  1862. really pray

  1863. by ourselves.

  1864. do I

  1865. bless God's

  1866. name every

  1867. day?

  1868. Do you?

  1869. Do we

  1870. consistently

  1871. meditate on

  1872. his wondrous

  1873. works?

  1874. Do our

  1875. mouths

  1876. consistently

  1877. speak the

  1878. praise of

  1879. the Lord

  1880. at every

  1881. moment?

  1882. Do we

  1883. always come

  1884. to God

  1885. with praise

  1886. that is

  1887. personal and

  1888. passionate?

  1889. I mean,

  1890. I don't know

  1891. you, but I'm

  1892. pretty sure the

  1893. answer is no.

  1894. But there's

  1895. one who did.

  1896. praise.

  1897. I don't know

  1898. because praise

  1899. fit for a

  1900. king must be

  1901. given by the

  1902. king himself.

  1903. We may never

  1904. praise the

  1905. king as we

  1906. ought, but we

  1907. have a king who

  1908. has done that

  1909. for us.

  1910. And we can be

  1911. assured that he

  1912. is working those

  1913. desires in us.

  1914. God gave us

  1915. this psalm to

  1916. raise us above

  1917. our circumstances,

  1918. above the

  1919. temptations we're

  1920. fighting, the

  1921. trials we're

  1922. facing, the

  1923. suffering we

  1924. may be

  1925. enduring, to

  1926. see our great

  1927. God as ruling

  1928. over all

  1929. things and

  1930. graciously working

  1931. all things for

  1932. our good in

  1933. Christ.

  1934. And so we

  1935. respond in

  1936. ways that

  1937. defy our

  1938. circumstances and

  1939. astound and

  1940. confound the

  1941. people around us

  1942. who don't know

  1943. God.

  1944. that's what

  1945. he's called us

  1946. to, brothers

  1947. and sisters.

  1948. Praise fit for

  1949. a king because

  1950. God is a king

  1951. like no other.

  1952. And with all the

  1953. joys he gives us

  1954. in this life, we

  1955. know that our

  1956. greatest joy lies

  1957. in the future when

  1958. we join our

  1959. voices with those

  1960. around the throne.

  1961. But we don't

  1962. want to wait until

  1963. that day because

  1964. God is great and

  1965. good and God is

  1966. powerful and

  1967. gracious and we

  1968. will bless his

  1969. name every day

  1970. all to the

  1971. praise of his

  1972. glorious grace.

  1973. Father, we thank

  1974. you that your

  1975. grace has come to

  1976. us in Jesus

  1977. Christ.

  1978. We thank you that

  1979. you have given

  1980. us a reason to

  1981. praise you.

  1982. You've given us

  1983. countless reasons

  1984. to praise you.

  1985. for our good and

  1986. and it's for our

  1987. good and our joy

  1988. and our health and

  1989. our benefit.

  1990. It's all for your

  1991. glory.

  1992. We thank you that

  1993. Jesus has done this

  1994. for us.

1995. It's in his name we

  1996. pray.

  1997. Amen.
