  1. We're going to continue on in our Matthew series.

  2. Today's passage is continuing on in the parable series,

  3. ! We're in verses 44 to 52.

  4. If you don't have a Bible and would like to use one,

  5. please raise your hand and we'd be happy to give you a Bible that you can use and keep.

  6. Again, we're in chapter 13, verses 44 to 52.

  7. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  8. Heavenly Father,

  9. you are this great, precious, matchless treasure.

  10. The best thing that we have ever found.

  11. But life is distracting.

  12. Life is hard.

  13. We have an enemy.

  14. A fierce enemy that's seeking to distract us.

  15. Take our eyes away from the rich treasure that we have found.

  16. I pray, Heavenly Father, please use my weak words,

  17. this short time,

  18. to refresh anew

  19. our evaluation

  20. of the kingdom of heaven.

  21. that, Holy Spirit,

  22. you would be in this place.

  23. You would fill us

  24. so that we would have eyes to see

  25. and ears to hear

  26. that your kingdom is worth everything.

  27. Make us a people united in this one thing.

  28. that we would just have this one thing

  29. and we would lose all else

  30. in joy to gain this one thing.

  31. Make it true of us now.

  32. Help us to come back to our first loves.

  33. Speak through me.

  34. I am a weak man

  35. with so many infirmities,

  36. deficiencies,

  37. but you are perfect.

  38. You are strong.

  39. Be glorified through me.

  40. In Jesus' name we pray.

  41. Amen.

  42. If you are able,

  43. please rise

  44. to honor the reading of God's word.

  45. Starting in verse 44.

  46. The kingdom of heaven

  47. is like treasure

  48. hidden in a field

  49. which a man found

  50. and covered up.

  51. Then,

  52. in his joy,

  53. in his joy,

  54. he goes

  55. and sells all that he has

  56. and buys that field.

  57. Again,

  58. the kingdom of heaven

  59. is like a merchant

  60. in search of fine pearls

  61. who,

  62. on finding one pearl

  63. of great value,

  64. went and sold

  65. all that he had

  66. and bought it.

  67. Again,

  68. the kingdom of heaven

  69. is like a net

  70. that was thrown

  71. into the sea

  72. and gathered fish

  73. of every kind.

  74. When it was full,

  75. men drew it ashore

  76. and sat down

  77. and sorted the good

  78. into containers

  79. but threw away the bad.

  80. So it will be

  81. at the end of the age.

  82. The angels will come out

  83. and separate the evil

  84. from the righteous

  85. and throw them

  86. into the fiery furnace.

  87. In that place,

  88. there will be weeping

  89. and gnashing

  90. of teeth.

  91. Have you understood

  92. all these things?

  93. They said to him,

  94. yes.

  95. And he said to them,

  96. therefore,

  97. every scribe

  98. who has been trained

  99. for the kingdom of heaven

  100. is like a master

  101. of a house

  102. who brings out

  103. of his treasure

  104. what is new

  105. and what is old.

  106. This is God's holy

  107. and authoritative word.

  108. You may be seated.

  109. Yeah,

  110. you can throw

  111. all that stuff out.

  112. Those

  113. simple words

  114. would come

  115. to haunt

  116. James Howells

  117. for the next

  118. 12 years

  119. of his life.

  120. Because of that

  121. all too common mistake

  122. of just

  123. mistakenly

  124. throwing out something,

  125. he has been

  126. on a decade-long journey.

  127. to retrieve

  128. that piece of trash

  129. who's made

  130. his new home

  131. at the local city landfill.

  132. His plan?

  133. Hire a bunch

  134. of lawyers.

  135. Beg

  136. and plead

  137. the local city council

  138. to allow him

  139. to purchase

  140. that dumpster,

  141. that landfill.

  142. Fly

  143. specialized drones

  144. with infrared cameras

  145. to find

  146. this piece of trash.

  147. Send out

  148. a pack

  149. of those

  150. Boston Dynamic

  151. robot dogs.

  152. You guys know the kind.

  153. The ones that could do

  154. backflips.

  155. Excavate

  156. tens of thousands

  157. of tons

  158. of trash

  159. cart by cart

  160. to a scanner

  161. trained by AI

  162. to find

  163. this piece of trash.

  164. Finally,

  165. install a

  166. backup

  167. magnetic belt

  168. to capture,

  169. to catch

  170. any kind of

  171. leftover

  172. metallic objects.

  173. house.

  174. He's willing

  175. to invest

  176. millions

  177. and millions

  178. of dollars

  179. and thousands

  180. of hours

  181. of power

  182. to find

  183. this piece

  184. of trash

  185. so small

  186. that it just

  187. got mixed in

  188. with the rest

  189. of his everyday

  190. trash.

  191. To his

  192. overly

  193. engineered plan,

  194. Howell said,

  195. and I quote,

  196. this seems

  197. logical.

  198. But this man

  199. looks crazy

  200. until you

  201. understand what

  202. he was looking

  203. for.

  204. Back in

  205. 2013,

  206. he accidentally

  207. threw out

  208. an office

  209. hard drive

  210. which contained

  211. his only

  212. copy of

  213. a 51

  214. character

  215. password

  216. to his

  217. crypto wallet,

  218. his Bitcoin

  219. wallet.

  220. You see,

  221. Howells was

  222. one of the

  223. first people

  224. in the world

  225. to start

  226. mining for

  227. Bitcoin

  228. and in doing

  229. so he

  230. amassed

  231. an incalculable

  232. fortune.

  233. A fortune

  234. that is

  235. currently valued

  236. at $800

  237. million.

  238. Now,

  239. I still think

  240. that Howell

  241. should probably

  242. just cut his

  243. losses and

  244. move on

  245. with his

  246. life,

  247. but it

  248. makes a

  249. little bit

  250. more sense

  251. of why

  252. he would

  253. go to

  254. such things

  255. to find

  256. this little

  257. tiny

  258. hard drive.

  259. You see,

  260. our actions

  261. reflect what

  262. we value

  263. most.

  264. We shape

  265. our entire

  266. lives

  267. around

  268. what we

  269. value.

  270. Our

  271. schedules,

  272. budgets,

  273. thoughts,

  274. our

  275. conversations,

  276. our

  277. relationships,

  278. they all

  279. display on

  280. the outside

  281. what we

  282. value on

  283. the inside.

  284. Someone else

  285. didn't know

  286. anything about

  287. you but

  288. saw a

  289. snapshot of

  290. your life

  291. this past

  292. week.

  293. What would

  294. he or she

  295. think about

  296. what you

  297. value?

  298. In our

  299. passage this

  300. morning,

  301. Jesus wraps

  302. up his

  303. discourse about

  304. the kingdom

  305. of heaven by

  306. making one

  307. simple point.

  308. The kingdom

  309. of heaven

  310. and its

  311. king are

  312. worth

  313. everything.

  314. The kingdom

  315. of heaven

  316. and its

  317. king are

  318. worth

  319. everything.

  320. One of the

  321. repeated words

  322. in this

  323. parable is the

  324. word all

  325. or every.

  326. So in the

  327. final four

  328. parables of

  329. this chapter,

  330. we'll understand

  331. how the

  332. kingdom of

  333. heaven is

  334. all

  335. rewarding,

  336. all

  337. reckoning,

  338. and finally

  339. all

  340. revealing.

  341. Our

  342. passage this

  343. morning opens

  344. with two

  345. short parables

  346. starting with

  347. the parable

  348. of the

  349. hidden

  350. treasure.

  351. Verse 44,

  352. the kingdom

  353. of heaven is

  354. compared to

  355. a treasure of

  356. inestimable

  357. worth that a

  358. man finds

  359. buried in a

  360. field.

  361. Here,

  362. Jesus draws on

  363. a common

  364. ancient practice

  365. because remember

  366. back then there

  367. were no

  368. secure banks,

  369. no FDI

  370. insured banks

  371. where you

  372. could store

  373. all your

  374. valued possessions.

  375. But especially

  376. in a period

  377. rife with

  378. wars,

  379. fighting,

  380. pilfering,

  381. you needed

  382. a safe place

  383. to hide your

  384. stuff.

  385. And so

  386. the best

  387. option for

  388. all these

  389. people,

  390. for a lot

  391. of people,

  392. was simply

  393. just to

  394. pick up a

  395. spade,

  396. pick up a

  397. shovel,

  398. and dig

  399. so they

  400. could hide

  401. their treasures

  402. underground.

  403. And if the

  404. original owner

  405. passed away

  406. before retrieving

  407. it, a

  408. treasure could

  409. very easily

  410. be hidden

  411. for a very

  412. long time.

  413. And it

  414. seems like

  415. that's the

  416. case in

  417. this parable.

  418. If the

  419. current owner

  420. had known

  421. that a

  422. rich,

  423. matchless

  424. treasure was

  425. buried in

  426. his field,

  427. would he

  428. have told

  429. it?

  430. Now, Jesus

  431. doesn't give

  432. us a lot of

  433. detail on

  434. the back

  435. story of

  436. this man,

  437. how he

  438. found it.

  439. Details like,

  440. who is he?

  441. Why he was

  442. on this field?

  443. How did he

  444. find this?

  445. Because that's

  446. all going to

  447. detract away

  448. from his

  449. main singular

  450. point.

  451. Regardless of

  452. the circumstances,

  453. this man

  454. finds this

  455. one hidden

  456. treasure.

  457. And he

  458. immediately

  459. understands

  460. its worth.

  461. He does

  462. a quick

  463. cost-benefit

  464. analysis,

  465. does the math

  466. in his head,

  467. and he

  468. easily concludes

  469. that his

  470. entire net

  471. worth,

  472. everything that

  473. he's gained

  474. from working

  475. year after

  476. year,

  477. everything that

  478. he's possibly

  479. gained from

  480. his family

  481. inheritance,

  482. all of that

  483. can't compare

  484. to the value

  485. of the

  486. treasure.

  487. treasure.

  488. So he

  489. determines

  490. to hide

  491. the treasure

  492. again,

  493. to sell

  494. all that

  495. he has,

  496. to buy

  497. that field

  498. so that

  499. he can

  500. gain it

  501. properly,

  502. legally.

  503. The second

  504. parable is

  505. very similar

  506. in length

  507. and messaging.

  508. Jesus compares

  509. the kingdom

  510. of heaven

  511. to a

  512. merchant

  513. who is

  514. in search

  515. of the

  516. finest

  517. of pearls.

  518. Today,

  519. 99% of

  520. pearls are

  521. manually

  522. farmed.

  523. They're

  524. dramatically

  525. boosting

  526. their

  527. production

  528. and

  529. dramatically

  530. decreasing

  531. their

  532. value

  533. and

  534. rarity.

  535. But

  536. back then,

  537. all the

  538. pearls

  539. were natural

  540. and extremely

  541. rare and

  542. prized.

  543. They were

  544. even considered

  545. more valuable

  546. than gold.

  547. There are

  548. ancient reports

  549. that tell

  550. of pearls

  551. that were

  552. worth more

  553. than tens

  554. of thousands

  555. and tens

  556. of millions

  557. even

  558. of dollars

  559. in modern

  560. currency.

  561. Some

  562. serendipitously

  563. stumble upon

  564. a treasure

  565. that just

  566. plops in

  567. their lap.

  568. But

  569. others,

  570. like this

  571. merchant,

  572. search,

  573. labor

  574. with intention

  575. and persistence.

  576. When he

  577. finally finds

  578. that pearl,

  579. though it

  580. cost him

  581. time

  582. and energy,

  583. he

  584. instantly

  585. recognizes

  586. that this

  587. pearl was

  588. worth it.

  589. With his

  590. trained eye,

  591. he sees

  592. its coat,

  593. its luster,

  594. its perfect

  595. sphericity,

  596. its color,

  597. its shape,

  598. and he

  599. immediately

  600. knows he's

  601. found something

  602. he's never

  603. found before.

  604. Knowing the

  605. market for

  606. these kinds

  607. of things,

  608. he too

  609. performs a

  610. cost-benefit

  611. analysis.

  612. In comparison,

  613. commentators

  614. surmise that

  615. the man in

  616. the first

  617. parable was

  618. just a

  619. lowly day

  620. laborer,

  621. didn't have

  622. much to

  623. his name

  624. probably,

  625. but this

  626. merchant,

  627. it's not

  628. like that.

  629. He probably

  630. had other

  631. expensive,

  632. rare pearls

  633. in his

  634. possession.

  635. He had

  636. even more

  637. to sell,

  638. yet still,

  639. Jesus is

  640. emphatically

  641. making the

  642. point,

  643. it is worth

  644. to sell

  645. all that you

  646. have,

  647. just to gain

  648. this one

  649. pearl,

  650. this singular

  651. pearl.

  652. That word

  653. one,

  654. it stands

  655. out in

  656. verse 46.

  657. Jesus

  658. could have

  659. said a

  660. pearl,

  661. but he

  662. says the

  663. one pearl.

  664. I think

  665. to highlight

  666. its singularity,

  667. this one

  668. singular pearl

  669. is more

  670. valuable than

  671. all the other

  672. pearls in his

  673. possession

  674. combined.

  675. This

  676. cost-benefit

  677. analysis is

  678. the central

  679. point of

  680. this parable.

  681. We're

  682. familiar with

  683. the basic

  684. idea,

  685. right?

  686. It's a

  687. fancy

  688. business

  689. term,

  690. that's a

  691. very basic

  692. idea.

  693. Do the

  694. benefits

  695. outweigh the

  696. costs?

  697. If so,

  698. then go

  699. for it,

  700. it makes

  701. sense.

  702. If not,

  703. then pump

  704. the brakes,

  705. rethink

  706. things.

  707. So there

  708. are two

  709. parts to

  710. that analysis

  711. of understanding.

  712. It's the

  713. cost on the

  714. one hand,

  715. and then the

  716. benefit.

  717. So I want

  718. to first look

  719. at the

  720. cost.

  721. The cost

  722. of the

  723. kingdom is

  724. plain and

  725. clear.

  726. Almost verbatim,

  727. Jesus tells us

  728. plainly that

  729. both of these

  730. parables,

  731. these men

  732. sell everything.

  733. They sell

  734. everything that

  735. they have.

  736. Though they

  737. might have

  738. looked crazy

  739. to the outside

  740. world,

  741. they nonetheless

  742. liquidated their

  743. homes,

  744. their land,

  745. their livestock,

  746. extra clothing,

  747. jewelry,

  748. stored food,

  749. anything and

  750. everything.

  751. It all

  752. must go

  753. so that they

  754. could buy

  755. this one

  756. thing.

  757. Jesus makes

  758. it clear that

  759. the kingdom

  760. of heaven,

  761. of being

  762. under the

  763. rule and

  764. reign of

  765. Jesus Christ,

  766. the king,

  767. it costs

  768. you

  769. everything.

  770. The kingdom

  771. of heaven is

  772. all-encompassing.

  773. It's all

  774. demanding.

  775. Jesus very

  776. plainly tells

  777. us in Luke

  778. 13,

  779. anyone,

  780. any one of

  781. you who

  782. does not

  783. renounce all

  784. that you

  785. have cannot

  786. be my

  787. disciple.

  788. Now,

  789. I don't

  790. think that

  791. Jesus literally

  792. means that

  793. today we

  794. need to

  795. now take a

  796. vow of

  797. poverty and

  798. sell all

  799. that we

  800. have to

  801. give to

  802. the poor.

  803. You read

  804. of examples

  805. of wealthy

  806. people in the

  807. gospel and in

  808. the book of

  809. Acts who

  810. provide for

  811. Jesus and

  812. his disciples.

  813. Even the

  814. apostles,

  815. Peter,

  816. he's shown to

  817. have possessions.

  818. And for those

  819. of us with

  820. families,

  821. it is our

  822. God-given

  823. responsibility to

  824. provide for

  825. them, to

  826. work hard for

  827. them.

  828. If you don't,

  829. then you are

  830. worse than

  831. unbelievers.

  832. That's what

  833. 1 Timothy 5

  834. says.

  835. For even

  836. unbelievers

  837. understand their

  838. duty to

  839. provide for

  840. their families.

  841. But while

  842. Jesus might

  843. not literally

  844. demand all,

  845. he does

  846. spiritually demand

  847. all.

  848. All of our

  849. hearts, all of

  850. our allegiance.

  851. The cost of

  852. the kingdom is

  853. steep.

  854. There is no

  855. easy believism

  856. in the kingdom.

  857. There is no,

  858. all you need to

  859. do is just say

  860. a prayer.

  861. Just come up

  862. once for an

  863. altar call.

  864. Even just get

  865. baptized.

  866. Just get wet

  867. for a little

  868. bit and then

  869. you're going to

  870. be good.

  871. You can

  872. coast.

  873. It is only

  874. those who are

  875. willing to give

  876. up everything

  877. who will be

  878. able to gain

  879. the kingdom.

  880. As the old

  881. saying goes,

  882. salvation is

  883. free, but it

  884. costs you

  885. everything.

  886. money.

  887. It's not just

  888. with money,

  889. whether it's

  890. our time,

  891. a dream of

  892. yours, a

  893. relationship,

  894. attachments to

  895. comfort,

  896. family, your

  897. health even.

  898. There can't be

  899. anything where

  900. we say to

  901. Christ, you can

  902. have this much.

  903. You can have

  904. 10%.

  905. you can have

  906. Sunday mornings,

  907. but this,

  908. this is mine.

  909. This is my

  910. line in the

  911. sand.

  912. You, you

  913. cannot touch

  914. this.

  915. brothers and

  916. sisters, where

  917. is that line

  918. for you?

  919. Lots of us

  920. ponder what we

  921. ought to do with

  922. our lives.

  923. Some of us are

  924. thinking through

  925. our professional

  926. careers, maybe

  927. even thinking

  928. about entering

  929. full-time

  930. Christian ministry.

  931. Should I go to

  932. med school, or

  933. move to this

  934. city, or marry

  935. this guy or

  936. girl?

  937. At the risk of

  938. minimizing the

  939. importance of

  940. those questions,

  941. they are always

  942. secondary.

  943. The primary

  944. question is,

  945. can I renounce

  946. all that I have

  947. to follow Jesus

  948. Christ?

  949. Far too many of

  950. us get the

  951. order of this

  952. question mixed

  953. up.

  954. We try to figure

  955. out what to do

  956. with our lives

  957. without resolving

  958. a total,

  959. complete surrender

  960. to Jesus

  961. Christ.

  962. But if you're

  963. resolved, if you

  964. get that first

  965. question right,

  966. then that totally

  967. transforms the

  968. way that you

  969. answer that

  970. second question,

  971. doesn't it?

  972. When we're

  973. confronted, though,

  974. with the high

  975. cost of the

  976. kingdom, it

  977. might be easy to

  978. push back saying,

  979. oh no, Jesus

  980. didn't mean

  981. everything.

  982. Jesus is kind.

  983. Didn't we just

  984. read that he is

  985. gentle and lowly

  986. and that he won't

  987. break a bruised

  988. reed?

  989. Your interpretation

  990. makes the kingdom

  991. too demanding,

  992. too exclusive,

  993. too harsh.

  994. You're right.

  995. Jesus is all-loving,

  996. all-kind, and that

  997. is precisely why he

  998. does demand our

  999. entire allegiance.

  1000. Because he knows

  1001. that those who live

  1002. outside of the

  1003. kingdom of heaven,

  1004. we serve.

  1005. They serve a

  1006. self-defeating,

  1007. self-sabotaging

  1008. enterprise.

  1009. Take money, for

  1010. example.

  1011. Money universally

  1012. is seen as power.

  1013. Money promises

  1014. security, safety.

  1015. It holds out the

  1016. illusion of control,

  1017. of freedom of

  1018. worry.

  1019. It is so easy

  1020. to let money

  1021. displace God

  1022. as our highest

  1023. good, as our

  1024. rock and our

  1025. redeemer.

  1026. But the reality

  1027. is, is in the

  1028. long run, money

  1029. will never make

  1030. you feel rich.

  1031. Money will never

  1032. make you feel

  1033. rich.

  1034. It's like

  1035. salt water.

  1036. it temporarily

  1037. quenches your

  1038. thirst.

  1039. But it will only

  1040. suck your

  1041. cells dry from

  1042. the inside out

  1043. and make you

  1044. thirstier and

  1045. thirstier and

  1046. thirstier.

  1047. Even when I

  1048. know that in my

  1049. own head, if I'm

  1050. honest, I am cut

  1051. to the heart by

  1052. this passage.

  1053. And I'm

  1054. convicted by my

  1055. allegiance to

  1056. other things.

  1057. I've had to

  1058. wrestle in

  1059. prayer in

  1060. preparation for

  1061. this sermon.

  1062. Could I do

  1063. what these men

  1064. did?

  1065. Could I sell

  1066. all that I

  1067. have and

  1068. renounce

  1069. everything for

  1070. the sake of

  1071. the kingdom?

  1072. to give up

  1073. my house,

  1074. my car,

  1075. my 401k,

  1076. my entire

  1077. net worth?

  1078. Could I lead

  1079. my family down

  1080. that path?

  1081. Could I

  1082. joyfully do

  1083. it?

  1084. Do I value the

  1085. kingdom above

  1086. all else?

  1087. every morning,

  1088. every single

  1089. day, I feel

  1090. the need to

  1091. train myself

  1092. to do this

  1093. one simple

  1094. thing.

  1095. Trying to

  1096. rip open

  1097. this grip,

  1098. this tight grip

  1099. that I have

  1100. on my

  1101. possessions.

  1102. I have to do

  1103. that every

  1104. morning.

  1105. I have to

  1106. do that

  1107. every morning.

  1108. But in those

  1109. prayer times,

  1110. if I'm not

  1111. careful,

  1112. I can get

  1113. into this

  1114. mode very

  1115. easily of

  1116. self-focused

  1117. performance.

  1118. As Jerry

  1119. Bridges put it,

  1120. our default

  1121. mode as

  1122. believers is

  1123. to live by

  1124. performance

  1125. and not

  1126. by grace.

  1127. It is the

  1128. default mode

  1129. of my own

  1130. heart to

  1131. live just

  1132. looking at

  1133. myself and

  1134. to feel like

  1135. I'm not

  1136. Christian enough.

  1137. This message

  1138. so far

  1139. might have

  1140. just reinforced

  1141. that feeling

  1142. that you are

  1143. not sacrificial

  1144. enough.

  1145. You're not

  1146. giving enough.

  1147. You're not

  1148. holy enough.

  1149. But in these

  1150. short parables,

  1151. notice that

  1152. Jesus doesn't

  1153. describe these

  1154. men as

  1155. exceptionally

  1156. holy or

  1157. exceptionally

  1158. righteous.

  1159. It's not even

  1160. about these

  1161. men at all.

  1162. It's about

  1163. the value

  1164. of the

  1165. kingdom of

  1166. heaven.

  1167. in no

  1168. sense did

  1169. these men

  1170. feel like

  1171. they were

  1172. committing a

  1173. self-sacrificial

  1174. magnanimous

  1175. act.

  1176. If you came up

  1177. to them and

  1178. asked them,

  1179. how did you

  1180. do this?

  1181. How did you

  1182. find it within

  1183. yourself to be

  1184. so brave,

  1185. so sacrificial?

  1186. They would

  1187. have looked at

  1188. you with

  1189. complete confusion

  1190. because in

  1191. the end,

  1192. this deed was

  1193. done in

  1194. joy.

  1195. joy because

  1196. of the value

  1197. of the

  1198. kingdom.

  1199. While he

  1200. sold every

  1201. previous

  1202. attachment,

  1203. every sense

  1204. of security,

  1205. every aspect

  1206. tied to his

  1207. previous life,

  1208. he was

  1209. supremely

  1210. joyful.

  1211. This is the

  1212. key.

  1213. This is the

  1214. key to all

  1215. Christian living

  1216. and all of

  1217. Christian growth.

  1218. It's about

  1219. getting our

  1220. eyes off of

  1221. ourselves,

  1222. off of our

  1223. stuff,

  1224. and to

  1225. look,

  1226. seek first

  1227. the kingdom

  1228. of heaven.

  1229. We only

  1230. learn to

  1231. deny ourselves

  1232. and to

  1233. renounce

  1234. everything by

  1235. seeing the

  1236. surpassing worth

  1237. of the kingdom

  1238. of heaven.

  1239. That's how

  1240. the apostle

  1241. Paul,

  1242. he gave up

  1243. all former

  1244. ties,

  1245. all his

  1246. former security,

  1247. all his

  1248. former boasts.

  1249. In Philippians

  1250. 3, he says,

  1251. whatever gain I

  1252. had,

  1253. I counted

  1254. as loss

  1255. for the

  1256. sake of

  1257. Christ.

  1258. Indeed, I

  1259. count everything

  1260. as loss

  1261. because of the

  1262. surpassing worth

  1263. of knowing

  1264. Christ Jesus

  1265. my Lord.

  1266. For his

  1267. sake I

  1268. have suffered

  1269. the loss

  1270. of all

  1271. things and

  1272. count them

  1273. as rubbish

  1274. in order that

  1275. I may gain

  1276. Christ and be

  1277. found in him.

  1278. Every gain

  1279. in this

  1280. world,

  1281. all the

  1282. money,

  1283. the status,

  1284. the power,

  1285. it was like

  1286. refuse,

  1287. like worthless

  1288. dung compared

  1289. to the

  1290. surpassing worth

  1291. of knowing

  1292. Christ.

  1293. That's why

  1294. David Livingstone,

  1295. a missionary

  1296. to Africa,

  1297. even when he

  1298. contracted malaria

  1299. over 30 times,

  1300. had his left

  1301. arm crushed

  1302. by a lion

  1303. or had to

  1304. bury his wife

  1305. in the soils

  1306. of Africa.

  1307. It almost

  1308. feels not real,

  1309. the hardships

  1310. that he had to

  1311. endure.

  1312. But he

  1313. said this,

  1314. people talk

  1315. of the

  1316. sacrifice

  1317. that I've

  1318. made and

  1319. spending so

  1320. much of my

  1321. life in

  1322. Africa.

  1323. Anxiety,

  1324. sickness,

  1325. suffering,

  1326. or danger,

  1327. now and

  1328. then with

  1329. the foregoing

  1330. of the

  1331. common

  1332. conveniences

  1333. and charities

  1334. of this

  1335. life may

  1336. make us

  1337. pause and

  1338. cause the

  1339. spirit to

  1340. waver and

  1341. the soul

  1342. to sink,

  1343. but let

  1344. this be

  1345. for a

  1346. moment.

  1347. For these

  1348. are all

  1349. nothing when

  1350. compared with

  1351. the glory that

  1352. shall be

  1353. revealed in

  1354. and for

  1355. us.

  1356. I have

  1357. never made

  1358. a sacrifice.

  1359. I never

  1360. made a

  1361. sacrifice.

  1362. I don't

  1363. mean to

  1364. over-spiritualize

  1365. or trivialize

  1366. our sacrifices

  1367. and our

  1368. hardships that

  1369. we face.

  1370. There are

  1371. real hardships

  1372. that we do

  1373. go through.

  1374. The battle

  1375. against our

  1376. sins, Satan,

  1377. and the world

  1378. is real.

  1379. It rages

  1380. against us.

  1381. And Christians

  1382. do get

  1383. discouraged

  1384. and depressed.

  1385. But Living

  1386. Stone's quote

  1387. is not to

  1388. minimize our

  1389. struggles, but

  1390. it is to

  1391. maximize the

  1392. incomparable

  1393. value of

  1394. the kingdom.

  1395. Once we

  1396. see the

  1397. immeasurable

  1398. value of

  1399. the kingdom,

  1400. then these

  1401. sacrifices, they

  1402. start to feel

  1403. smaller.

  1404. It all

  1405. relativizes.

  1406. It's not

  1407. primarily by

  1408. just doing

  1409. this in our

  1410. prayer times.

  1411. it's not

  1412. just doing

  1413. this.

  1414. But it's

  1415. doing this

  1416. to grasp

  1417. the feet of

  1418. our Lord

  1419. Jesus Christ,

  1420. to gain

  1421. more of

  1422. him, to

  1423. say that I

  1424. can't believe

  1425. I get to be

  1426. in relationship

  1427. with you,

  1428. Jesus Christ.

  1429. The point of

  1430. this parable is

  1431. not to starve

  1432. yourself, but

  1433. it is to

  1434. feast.

  1435. Look, guys,

  1436. I know you

  1437. know this.

  1438. I know you

  1439. know this.

  1440. But sometimes

  1441. life is so

  1442. hard and

  1443. distracting,

  1444. discouraging,

  1445. that you need

  1446. someone else to

  1447. tell you this,

  1448. to remind you

  1449. of the supreme

  1450. worth of the

  1451. king and his

  1452. kingdom.

  1453. It is so

  1454. easy, is it

  1455. not, to let our

  1456. estimation of the

  1457. kingdom fluctuate.

  1458. we know on our

  1459. heads the

  1460. infinite value of

  1461. the kingdom, of

  1462. Jesus Christ, but

  1463. in our heart of

  1464. hearts, our

  1465. personal evaluation,

  1466. it rises and

  1467. falls.

  1468. I am 100%

  1469. sure that

  1470. James Howell's

  1471. desire for his

  1472. little hard drive,

  1473. it rose and it

  1474. fell, along with

  1475. Bitcoin.

  1476. When he saw

  1477. that his

  1478. portfolio rose,

  1479. he just wanted

  1480. that even more.

  1481. When he fell,

  1482. disinterested.

  1483. When he saw

  1484. though, that

  1485. over time his

  1486. portfolio grow

  1487. from 10,000 to

  1488. a million to

  1489. 100 million to

  1490. 800 million

  1491. dollars, there's

  1492. a fire.

  1493. There's a desire

  1494. for that.

  1495. We do the

  1496. same thing when

  1497. we start to

  1498. really understand

  1499. the value of

  1500. the kingdom.

  1501. And when we

  1502. struggle to see

  1503. Jesus as he is,

  1504. God is gracious

  1505. to us to give

  1506. us the people

  1507. in this room

  1508. to rely on our

  1509. fellow brothers

  1510. and sisters in

  1511. this race.

  1512. And I have

  1513. experienced that

  1514. fellowship here.

  1515. I am amazed by

  1516. some of your

  1517. testimonies.

  1518. Some of you

  1519. guys have quit

  1520. your jobs,

  1521. moved to a

  1522. brand new

  1523. city, just

  1524. so you can

  1525. follow God's

  1526. call to be

  1527. part of this

  1528. church.

  1529. Others of you

  1530. are following

  1531. Jesus and

  1532. standing up for

  1533. truth, even if

  1534. it costs you

  1535. your relationships

  1536. with friends and

  1537. family, even when

  1538. they ridicule you.

  1539. you.

  1540. Still more of

  1541. you have given

  1542. yourselves to the

  1543. giving, to the

  1544. service, to the

  1545. growth of this

  1546. church and your

  1547. brothers and

  1548. sisters.

  1549. You have made the

  1550. kingdom your top

  1551. priority and it

  1552. shows.

1553. Even when it is a

  1554. struggle to make

  1555. the kingdom your

  1556. top priority, is

  1557. it not evidence that

  1558. the kingdom is your

  1559. top priority still?

1560. When we see, when I

  1561. see that faith in

  1562. you, I am regularly

  1563. built up, regularly

  1564. encouraged that Jesus

  1565. truly is worth

  1566. everything.

  1567. Bonhoeffer says so

  1568. much, he says,

  1569. God has put this

  1570. word into the mouth

  1571. of others in order

  1572. that it may be

  1573. communicated to us.

  1574. He needs him time,

  1575. he needs him again

  1576. and again when he

  1577. becomes uncertain and

  1578. discouraged.

  1579. For by himself he

  1580. cannot help himself

  1581. without denying the

  1582. truth, he needs his

  1583. brother as bearer and

  1584. proclaimer of the

  1585. divine word of

  1586. salvation.

  1587. The Christ in his

  1588. own heart is weaker

  1589. than the Christ in

  1590. the word of his

  1591. brother.

  1592. His own heart is

  1593. uncertain, his

  1594. brother's is sure.

  1595. When was the last

  1596. time you experienced

  1597. true Christian

  1598. fellowship?

  1599. Where a brother and

  1600. sister reminded you

1601. of the joy that we

  1602. have in Jesus Christ.

  1603. Don't you want that?

1604. Don't you want to do

  1605. that for others?

  1606. Let us faithfully

  1607. remind one another of

  1608. the value of the

  1609. kingdom, that the

  1610. king and his kingdom

  1611. are worth everything.

1612. Now so far it sounds

  1613. like the kingdom of

  1614. heaven is only a

  1615. benefit to some, but

1616. not a force to be

  1617. reckoned with.

  1618. Sean spoke last week

  1619. about the inevitability

  1620. of the kingdom of

  1621. heaven.

  1622. That when the battle

1623. is done and the dust

1624. settles, it will be the

  1625. kingdom of heaven that

  1626. stands, that reigns.

1627. There is no place for

  1628. this kind of apathy.

1629. No, it's good for you to

  1630. joyfully sell all your

1631. stuff, but it's not for

  1632. me.

1633. It's great that you found

  1634. your thing.

  1635. You have your kingdom,

  1636. I'll have mine.

  1637. Jesus debunks any sense

1638. of that kind of talk in

1639. the third parable of this

  1640. passage, the parable of

1641. the net, which shows that

1642. the kingdom of heaven is

  1643. all reckoning.

  1644. In this parable, the

  1645. kingdom of heaven is

  1646. compared to a massive

1647. sen net thrown into the

  1648. sea that indiscriminately

1649. gathers fish of all kinds,

  1650. which more literally

1651. translates in the Greek to

  1652. all races.

1653. Jesus again seems to be

  1654. drawing on real life

  1655. examples because fishermen

  1656. would regularly fish in

  1657. this particular manner.

1658. They would stretch out this

  1659. ginormous net between two

  1660. boats.

1661. It would stretch out even

1662. across a half mile and

  1663. they would slowly sail

  1664. around.

1665. These nets would have a

  1666. heavy lead line that

  1667. would drag across the

1668. bottom of the ocean or

1669. the bottom of the sea,

1670. allowing the net to span

  1671. the entire depth of

  1672. water.

  1673. There was no escaping,

  1674. no dodging this net.

1675. They would haul up every

  1676. watery creature on shore

  1677. then and then meticulously

1678. sort out the good from the

  1679. bad.

1680. In the Sea of Galilee,

1681. there were more than 20

  1682. types of sea creatures.

  1683. Remember, in Jewish society,

1684. they were to follow strict

  1685. dietary laws according to

  1686. Moses.

1687. So some, some of these

  1688. species were ceremoniously

  1689. clean, others unclean.

1690. The good and the bad.

1691. And so far, this parable and

1692. the parable of the wheat that

1693. Sean preached on last week,

1694. they touch on similar themes.

1695. But while the themes are

  1696. similar, their focuses are

  1697. slightly different.

1698. The parable of the wheat focuses

1699. more on the fact that the

1700. good and the evil, they

  1701. coexist.

1702. But this parable, the parable

1703. of the net, seems to build on

  1704. the previous parable, focused

1705. not on their coexistence, but

  1706. their separation.

1707. Right now, all of us see

  1708. creatures.

  1709. We're coexisting together.

1710. We see the big blue sea in

  1711. front of us.

1712. We see all the open space,

  1713. all the possibilities.

1714. And we imagine ourselves to be

  1715. completely, completely free,

  1716. completely and forever

  1717. autonomous.

1718. All unaware that the net is

  1719. enclosing in on us.

1720. Because the net, slowly but

1721. surely, is sweeping the sea of

  1722. the entire world.

1723. And it's filling up right now,

  1724. as we speak.

  1725. And it indiscriminately catches

  1726. men of all kinds.

1727. They don't care what demographic

  1728. you fit in.

1729. The net will catch all of us.

1730. It'll catch your Uber driver,

1731. your neighbor, your lab partner,

  1732. your dentist.

1733. The net has a max capacity.

  1734. It can't and won't fill up

  1735. indefinitely.

1736. And once it reaches that

1737. capacity, the kingdom of heaven,

1738. then it will be revealed in all

  1739. of its resplendent glory.

  1740. And judgment will come.

1741. With the bad being thrown into

  1742. the eternal fire.

1743. The place of weeping and

  1744. gnashing of teeth.

1745. This parable is a sober reminder

1746. of the reality of hell.

1747. As John MacArthur points out,

1748. Jesus speaks more about hell

1749. than he does about love.

1750. He speaks more about hell than

1751. all the other biblical authors.

1752. And he does so because he loves us.

  1753. He earnestly warns us

1754. that this net is slowly

  1755. but surely coming.

  1756. For scripture teaches us

  1757. that Jesus will return

  1758. one day soon.

  1759. All with his angels

  1760. to separate out

  1761. the good fish

  1762. from the bad fish,

  1763. from the sheep,

  1764. from the goats,

1765. from those of the kingdom of heaven

1766. and those outside of it.

  1767. Those who reject Jesus

  1768. as their king

  1769. and serve other idols

  1770. cannot and will not

  1771. be welcomed

1772. into the kingdom of heaven.

  1773. Believe it or not,

  1774. we're already coming up

1775. at the end of 2025.

1776. Looking forward to start 2026.

  1777. many of you guys

  1778. have big goals,

  1779. big dreams.

  1780. Get married.

  1781. Have a child.

  1782. Start a new job.

  1783. Buy a home.

  1784. All good things.

  1785. All blessings.

  1786. But forget not

  1787. that 2026

  1788. could be the year

  1789. that Jesus returns.

1790. It could be the year

1791. when the net is full.

1792. 2026 could be the year

1793. could be the last year

  1794. of our lives,

1795. the last year of earth.

  1796. So this holiday season,

1797. what will you speak about

1798. with your family and friends?

  1799. This next year,

1800. what will you speak about

  1801. to your coworkers,

  1802. to your neighbors?

  1803. You know,

  1804. I bet you that

  1805. going back,

1806. the men in our passage

1807. who found this great treasure,

1808. they never shut up about it.

1809. I bet you their friends

  1810. were sick and tired

1811. of hearing about their treasure.

1812. And I bet that we would too.

  1813. We can't help it.

  1814. What you value,

1815. what makes you most happy,

1816. is what you speak about,

  1817. what just overflows

  1818. in your life,

1819. just naturally oozes out of you.

  1820. We see this later

1821. in this very last verse

  1822. in our passage.

  1823. Those who have

  1824. and hold this treasure,

  1825. they are commanded

  1826. not to hoard,

  1827. not to hide,

  1828. but to bring out

  1829. this once hidden treasure.

  1830. To show publicly,

  1831. to share liberally,

  1832. to let others benefit

  1833. from this treasure

  1834. that we have found.

  1835. When you do,

1836. God can and will use

1837. that treasure of the gospel

  1838. to transform the evil

  1839. to the righteous,

  1840. just like he's done

  1841. for all of us.

1842. And then the kingdom of heaven

1843. is not just a personal treasure,

  1844. but it turns

  1845. or it becomes

  1846. a precious safety net

  1847. to snatch us up,

  1848. save us up

1849. from the pits of hell.

  1850. This transformation

  1851. from evil to righteous,

1852. it depends on one crucial thing.

  1853. It's understanding.

  1854. Without understanding,

  1855. the kingdom remains hidden

  1856. and its power unrevealed.

  1857. And that's why

  1858. Jesus now turns

  1859. away from the crowd

  1860. in verse 51

  1861. and turns directly

  1862. to his disciples

  1863. and he asks,

  1864. do you understand

  1865. all these things?

  1866. Understanding has been

  1867. a key theme

  1868. in this chapter.

  1869. It's full of parables

  1870. so far.

  1871. Earlier in verse 11,

  1872. Jesus rebukes

  1873. the unbelieving,

  1874. saying that they don't

  1875. have eyes to see,

  1876. ears to hear,

  1877. nor do they understand.

  1878. But to the disciples,

  1879. Jesus said to them,

1880. to them it has not been given,

  1881. but to you

  1882. it has been given

  1883. to know the secrets

1884. of the kingdom of heaven.

1885. Now, if you know anything

  1886. about the disciples

  1887. in the gospels,

  1888. you know to question

  1889. whether they really understood

1890. what Jesus is talking about.

  1891. But when the disciples

  1892. confidently respond

  1893. in verse 51,

  1894. saying,

  1895. yes, Jesus,

  1896. we get it.

  1897. We understand

  1898. all these things.

  1899. Jesus graciously agrees,

  1900. very graciously agrees,

  1901. and grants them

  1902. the honored title

  1903. of scribes.

  1904. Now, if you're familiar

  1905. with that title,

  1906. this was surprising

  1907. for two reasons.

  1908. Almost every time

1909. you read of a scribe

1910. in the gospel of Matthew,

  1911. that character

1912. is not one of the good ones.

  1913. Though they're highly esteemed

  1914. in Jewish culture,

  1915. although they're seen

  1916. as scholars and teachers

  1917. and experts

  1918. in the Mosaic law,

  1919. they consistently

  1920. rejected Jesus,

  1921. testing him

  1922. against their man-made laws,

  1923. their man-made religion.

  1924. not only that,

  1925. none of his disciples

  1926. were ever formally trained

  1927. like these prestigious

  1928. scribes had.

1929. They knew how to fish.

1930. If you needed to fish,

  1931. they were your people.

1932. If you needed to do your taxes,

1933. Matthew might have been your guy.

  1934. But none were

  1935. rigorously trained as scribes.

  1936. But despite their lack

  1937. of education,

  1938. Jesus then compares

  1939. these blue-collar,

  1940. uneducated,

  1941. former fishermen

  1942. to scribes.

  1943. He bestows upon them

  1944. this honored title.

  1945. These are the ones

  1946. who have unearthed

  1947. the hiddenness

  1948. of the treasure,

  1949. of the pearl.

  1950. These are the true

  1951. biblical scholars

  1952. who see and understand

  1953. the reality

  1954. of the kingdom.

  1955. And so that these

  1956. blue-collar men,

  1957. these uneducated men,

  1958. Jesus then compares them

  1959. to rich,

  1960. powerful,

  1961. influential masters

  1962. of the house

  1963. who have gained

  1964. this incredible treasure

  1965. to share with others.

  1966. That's what

  1967. verse 51 and 52 say.

  1968. And what comes out

  1969. of this treasure?

  1970. Jesus calls it

  1971. what is of old

1972. and what is of new.

  1973. What does that mean?

  1974. Here Jesus connects

  1975. these two ideas

  1976. of being a scribe

  1977. with great understanding

  1978. to a rich man

  1979. with great treasure.

  1980. Saying that the

  1981. teachings

  1982. are the treasure.

  1983. The teachings

  1984. are the treasure.

  1985. Jesus is likely

  1986. speaking of

  1987. old and new teachings

  1988. as in

  1989. the old

  1990. Hebrew scriptures,

  1991. our Old Testament

  1992. to the new teachings

  1993. about the kingdom

  1994. of heaven.

  1995. And from this chapter,

  1996. from these parables,

  1997. you might get

  1998. the impression

  1999. that the new teachings

  2000. are the only things

  2001. that matter.

  2002. Meaning that you can

  2003. leave behind the old.

  2004. On the flip side,

  2005. the scribes

  2006. and the Pharisees

  2007. who only knew

  2008. of the old

  2009. reject the new.

  2010. Both of these ideas,

  2011. they miss the mark.

2012. The old and the new

  2013. are inseparable.

  2014. And they need

  2015. to be taught,

  2016. held together.

  2017. Jesus is clear

  2018. that he has come

2019. not to wipe the slate

  2020. entirely clean,

  2021. but to finally reveal.

  2022. To reveal

  2023. what has been hidden

  2024. since the foundation

  2025. of the world.

  2026. That's what verse 35

  2027. of chapter 13 says.

  2028. Paul says so much

  2029. in Ephesians 3.

  2030. He says,

  2031. To me,

2032. though I am the least

  2033. of all the saints,

  2034. his grace was given

  2035. to preach

  2036. to the Gentiles

  2037. the unsearchable

  2038. riches of Christ.

  2039. The unsearchable

  2040. riches of Christ.

2041. And to bring to life

  2042. for everyone

  2043. what is the plan

  2044. of the mystery

  2045. hidden for ages

  2046. in God,

  2047. who created all things

  2048. so that through

  2049. the church

  2050. the manifold wisdom

  2051. of God

  2052. might be made known

  2053. to the rulers

  2054. and authorities

  2055. in the heavenly places.

  2056. This was according

  2057. to the eternal purpose

  2058. that he has realized

2059. in Christ Jesus our Lord

2060. in whom we have boldness

  2061. and access

  2062. with confidence

2063. through our faith in him.

2064. This is the perfect text

  2065. to understand

  2066. these two verses.

2067. It is only in Christ

  2068. do we find

  2069. these unsearchable

  2070. new yet old,

  2071. old yet new treasures.

2072. Do you guys understand too

  2073. verse 10 there?

  2074. These treasures

2075. were hidden for the ages

  2076. even from heavenly beings.

  2077. Through us,

  2078. the church of Christ,

  2079. we show

  2080. even heavenly beings

  2081. like angels

2082. what is the true revelation

2083. of the mysteries of God

  2084. in Christ Jesus.

  2085. Today online,

  2086. there are thousands

  2087. and thousands of voices

  2088. that are competing

  2089. for your attention.

  2096. new teaching,

  2097. a new insight,

  2098. a new way

  2099. to the good life.

  2103. political pundits,

  2104. they're all saying

2105. in their own unique way,

  2106. I'm the new thing

2107. that you should listen to.

2108. I have the new insight,

  2109. the new understanding

2110. that you should pay attention to.

  2111. And you know what?

  2112. People do.

  2113. Millions and millions

  2114. of people watch

  2115. and follow these men,

  2116. these women.

  2117. But none,

  2118. none of these people

  2119. have the message

  2120. that was hidden

  2121. from the beginning

  2122. of time.

  2123. None of these people

  2124. have the message

2125. that is new yet old,

  2126. that's old yet new.

  2127. We,

  2128. we,

  2129. the church of Christ,

  2130. do.

  2131. That's why Jesus says

  2132. in verse 51

  2133. that this identity

  2134. as a scribe,

2135. as the master of the house,

2136. is not just for the 12,

2137. but it's for every scribe,

2138. every disciple trained by him,

  2139. like you and me.

  2140. believer,

  2141. do you understand

  2142. and grasp

2143. the value of your treasure?

  2144. You possess treasures

  2145. new and old,

  2146. the very treasures

  2147. that angels longed

  2148. to look at,

  2149. the very treasures

  2150. this blind

  2151. and confused world needs.

  2152. And this mystery

  2153. is not only true,

  2154. but it is good.

  2155. the full mystery

  2156. is revealed

  2157. in the work

  2158. and the worth

  2159. of Jesus Christ,

  2160. our Savior,

  2161. that by his death

  2162. and his resurrection,

  2163. we have full access

2164. to the kingdom of heaven.

  2165. This is good news

  2166. for people

  2167. like you and me,

  2168. that a kingdom

  2169. that should have been

  2170. out of reach

  2171. for all of us

  2172. who are half-hearted,

  2173. distracted,

  2174. divided,

  2175. unsured,

  2176. discouraged,

  2177. weakened faith

  2178. because Jesus

  2179. has made a way

2180. by dying on our behalf

  2181. for the complete atonement

  2182. for our sins.

  2183. We now have boldness

  2184. and access,

  2185. confidence

  2186. through what?

2187. What did Ephesians 3 say?

2188. It's not by our perfection,

  2189. not by our performance,

  2190. not by selling

  2191. all that we have

  2192. and going on missions.

  2193. It's not by that.

  2194. It's by faith.

  2195. We read these verses

2196. for our assurance of pardon,

  2197. but God,

  2198. but God,

  2199. being rich in mercy

2200. because of the great love

2201. with which he loved us,

2202. even when we were dead

  2203. in our trespasses,

  2204. made us alive together

  2205. with Christ.

  2206. By grace,

  2207. you have been saved

2208. and raised us up with him

2209. and seated us with him

  2210. in the heavenly places

  2211. in Christ Jesus

2212. so that in the coming ages

  2213. he might show

  2214. the immeasurable riches

  2215. of his grace

  2216. and kindness towards us

  2217. in Christ Jesus.

  2218. For by grace,

  2219. you have been saved

  2220. through faith

  2221. and this is not

  2222. your own doing.

2223. It is the gift of God,

2224. not a result of works

2225. so that no one may boast.

  2226. once you see

  2227. the incredible riches

  2228. of mercy

  2229. that he has

  2230. towards sinners

  2231. like you and me,

  2232. your heart

  2233. can't help,

  2234. it can't help

2235. but to bubble up in joy,

  2236. to treasure Jesus Christ,

  2237. to know the worth

  2238. of the kingdom

  2239. and be willing

  2240. more and more

  2241. every day

  2242. to sell

  2243. and to renounce

  2244. all that you have,

  2245. to see it all

  2246. as dung,

  2247. as worthless

  2248. compared to just

  2249. gaining this one pearl.

  2250. and when he becomes

  2251. your supreme delight,

  2252. you can say

  2253. this quote

  2254. with true conviction.

  2255. This quote is one

  2256. that we heard

  2257. that I think

  2258. impacted all of

  2259. our pastoral team

  2260. at this pastor's conference

  2261. this last week

  2262. that I wanted

  2263. to share with you

2264. and it is my deepest prayer

2265. that God may make us

  2266. men and women

2267. who can boldly confess this

  2268. to the entire world.

  2269. I love

  2270. Jesus Christ

2271. and as I say it,

2272. I want to make clear

  2273. what I mean.

  2274. I admire

  2275. Jesus Christ

  2276. more than

  2277. any other human

  2278. or angelic being.

  2279. I enjoy

  2280. his ways

  2281. and his words

  2282. more than I enjoy

  2283. the ways and words

  2284. of anyone else.

  2285. I want

  2286. his approval

  2287. more than I want

  2288. the approval

  2289. of anyone else.

  2290. I want to be

  2291. with him

  2292. more than I want

2293. to be with anyone else.

  2294. I feel more

  2295. grateful to him

2296. for what he has done

  2297. for me

  2298. than I do

  2299. to anyone else.

  2300. I trust his words

  2301. more fully

  2302. than I trust

  2303. what anyone else

  2304. says.

  2305. I am more glad

  2306. in his exaltation

  2307. than in the exaltation

  2308. of anyone else

  2309. including me.

  2310. Would you pray

  2311. with me

  2312. that we would be

  2313. people like this?

  2314. Lord God

  2315. we thank you

  2316. that because of

  2317. your mercy

  2318. and grace

  2319. we are of

  2320. these people

  2321. that can say

  2322. I love

  2323. Jesus Christ.

  2324. Make that a

  2325. bigger

  2326. more tangible

  2327. more fervent

  2328. reality in our lives

  2329. that we would say

  2330. I love Jesus Christ

  2331. and that

  2332. everything else

  2333. pales in comparison

  2334. to following him.

  2335. That he is this

  2336. rare jewel

  2337. this precious pearl

  2338. that we are willing

  2339. to say no

  2340. to everything else

  2341. and gain all

  2342. that we have

  2343. in Jesus Christ

  2344. that as we're

  2345. about to sing

  2346. may we declare

  2347. that Christ

  2348. is enough.

  2349. I renounce

  2350. all in the world

  2351. the world behind me

  2352. the cross before me

  2353. make us

  2354. people of your kingdom

  2355. that treasure you

  2356. above all.

  2357. In Jesus name

  2358. we pray.

  2359. Amen.

  2360. Amen.
