  1. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.

  2. It's wonderful to gather with you,

  3. to worship God together.

  4. Please turn with me in your Bibles

  5. to Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  6. If you don't have a Bible,

  7. please raise your hand.

  8. We'd love to give you a Bible

  9. that you can have

  10. and you can use

  11. while you're here as well.

  12. We're in Matthew chapter 13,

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  13. starting in verse 53,

  14. going to Matthew chapter 14,

    Matthew 14:12

  15. verse 12.

  16. Let me pray for the reading

  17. and preaching of God's word.

  18. Heavenly Father,

  19. thank you for your gracious condescension

  20. in sending your Son,

  21. the heir and prince

  22. of the kingdom of heaven,

  23. to earth,

  24. to us,

  25. who are lowly and sinful.

  26. that he might take on our humanity,

  27. that he might redeem us from our sins,

  28. that he might lift us to you,

  29. our God.

  30. Lord, we plead with you.

  31. please,

  32. let that wondrous truth

  33. strike us afresh this morning.

  34. Exalt the name of your Son,

  35. Jesus Christ,

  36. and reveal to us his compassion,

  37. his love,

  38. his mercy,

  39. that we might all draw near to him

  40. in faith.

  41. In his precious name,

  42. in Jesus' name,

  43. we pray.

  44. Amen.

  45. Please stand,

  46. if you are able,

  47. and join me as I read.

  48. Let's honor God

  49. by standing together

  50. as I read from God's word

  51. from Matthew 13,

  52. 53 to 14,

  53. 12.

  54. And when Jesus had finished

  55. these parables,

  56. he went away from there.

  57. And coming to his hometown,

  58. he taught them in their synagogue

  59. so that they were astonished.

  60. And said,

  61. where did this man

  62. get this wisdom

  63. and these mighty works?

  64. Is not this

  65. the carpenter's son?

  66. Is not his mother

  67. called Mary?

  68. And are not his brothers

  69. James and Joseph

  70. and Simon and Judas?

  71. And are not all his sisters

  72. with us?

  73. Where then

  74. did this man get

  75. all these things?

  76. And they took offense

  77. at him.

  78. But Jesus said to them,

  79. a prophet is not

  80. without honor

  81. except in his hometown

  82. and in his own household.

  83. And he did not do

  84. many mighty works there

  85. because of their unbelief.

  86. At that time,

  87. Herod the Tetrarch

  88. heard about the fame

  89. of Jesus.

  90. And he said to his servants,

  91. this is John the Baptist.

  92. He has been raised

  93. from the dead.

  94. That is why

  95. these miraculous powers

  96. are at work in him.

  97. for Herod

  98. had seized John

  99. and bound him

  100. and put him in prison

  101. for the sake of Herodias,

  102. his brother Philip's wife.

  103. Because John

  104. had been saying to him,

  105. it is not lawful

  106. for you to have her.

  107. And though he wanted

  108. to put him to death,

  109. he feared the people

  110. because they held him

  111. to be a prophet.

  112. But when Herod's birthday came,

  113. the daughter of Herodias

  114. danced before the company

  115. and pleased Herod

  116. so that he promised

  117. with an oath

  118. to give her

  119. whatever she might ask.

  120. Prompted by her mother,

  121. she said,

  122. give me the head

  123. of John the Baptist

  124. here on a platter.

  125. And the king was sorry.

  126. But because of his oaths

  127. and his guests,

  128. he commanded it to be given.

  129. He sent

  130. and had John

  131. beheaded in the prison

  132. and his head

  133. was brought on a platter

  134. and given to the girl.

  135. And she brought it

  136. to her mother.

  137. And his disciples

  138. came and took the body

  139. and buried it.

  140. And they went

  141. and told Jesus.

  142. God's holy

  143. and authoritative word.

  144. Please be seated.

  145. Around the 10th century BC,

  146. the nation of Israel

  147. rejected Yahweh,

  148. the Lord God,

  149. as their king

  150. and instead demanded

  151. a human king

  152. so that they could have

  153. a king

  154. like the pagan nations

  155. around them.

  156. They rejected theocracy

  157. and demanded

  158. a monarchy.

  159. And Prophet Samuel

  160. at that time

  161. warned them

  162. that a human king

  163. would conscript

  164. their sons

  165. to fight and die

  166. in his wars

  167. and that he would

  168. take their daughters

  169. into service

  170. in his palace

  171. and that he warned them

  172. that the king

  173. would tax them

  174. and take the best

  175. of their fields

  176. and vineyards

  177. and olive orchards

  178. and that one day

  179. they would regret

  180. clamoring for a king

  181. when they feel

  182. his heavy hand

  183. upon them.

  184. But they didn't listen

  185. to the prophet.

  186. They demanded a king

  187. and they got one

  188. and after him

  189. they got a long line

  190. of unfaithful,

  191. fickle,

  192. wicked kings

  193. that led the nation

  194. away from God.

  195. Two centuries later,

  196. in the 8th century BC,

  197. when Prophet Isaiah

  198. warned the northern kingdom

  199. of Israel

  200. of their unfaithfulness

  201. to God

  202. and called them

  203. to repent

  204. of their idolatry

  205. that if they didn't

  206. that God would lead

  207. them into exile

  208. but they didn't listen.

  209. Their hearts were dull

  210. and their ears were heavy

  211. and their eyes were blind.

  212. They were deaf

  213. to the pleas

  214. of the prophet Isaiah

  215. and as a result

  216. they were conquered

  217. by the Assyrians

  218. and went into exile

  219. as well.

  220. Two centuries later

  221. in the southern kingdom

  222. of Judah,

  223. Prophet Jeremiah

  224. brought the same message

  225. calling them

  226. to repentance

  227. because the judgment

  228. of God was coming

  229. because of their idolatry.

  230. once again

  231. they brazenly

  232. hardened their faces

  233. like a rock

  234. and refused

  235. to repent.

  236. This is the pattern

  237. we see all throughout

  238. the Old Testament.

  239. A prophet

  240. whose message

  241. is heeded

  242. is the exception

  243. and not the norm

  244. in the Bible.

  245. And there are many reasons

  246. why people don't listen

  247. to prophets.

  248. One obvious reason

  249. is that people

  250. don't like being confronted

  251. about their sins

  252. and idols.

  253. They cling to their idols

  254. tooth and nail.

  255. They lash out

  256. against all those

  257. who seek to take

  258. those idols away

  259. from them.

  260. They like being lords

  261. of their own lives.

  262. They don't want to submit

  263. to the lordship of God.

  264. But there's another reason,

  265. a second reason

  266. people don't often

  267. listen to prophets

  268. is that they despise

  269. the prophets.

  270. Prophets are

  271. ordinary people

  272. entrusted with

  273. an extraordinary

  274. divine message.

  275. And the very

  276. ordinariness

  277. of these prophets

  278. makes people

  279. despise them.

  280. You're no better

  281. than me.

  282. Who made you

  283. a prince

  284. and judge

  285. over us?

  286. That's what the people

  287. of Israel said to Moses

  288. when he came to them.

  289. Who are you

  290. to tell me

  291. what to do?

  292. In the preceding

  293. passages,

  294. we have seen

  295. that Jesus

  296. is the ultimate

  297. prophet

  298. who reveals

  299. to us

  300. the secrets

  301. of the kingdom

  302. of heaven.

  303. And our passage

  304. this morning

  305. shows us

  306. how some

  307. of the people

  308. who heard that

  309. message

  310. responded to Jesus.

  311. And in doing so,

  312. it poses to us

  313. this most important

  314. question,

  315. how will you

  316. respond to Jesus?

  317. That's the main

  318. point of our passage.

  319. We must trust

  320. in Jesus

  321. as the ultimate

  322. prophet

  323. who reveals

  324. the kingdom

  325. of God.

  326. And we're going

  327. to see in the

  328. first passage

  329. that the kingdom

  330. is not found

  331. in Jesus'

  332. household.

  333. And in the

  334. second passage,

  335. that kingdom

  336. is not found

  337. in Herod's

  338. palace either.

  339. Jesus comes

  340. in the first

  341. passage in chapter

  342. 13,

  343. 53 to 58.

  344. He comes to

  345. his hometown

  346. and he teaches

  347. in the synagogue

  348. in verse 54.

  349. The hometown

  350. is not named

  351. here in this

  352. chapter,

  353. but it was named

  354. earlier in Matthew

  355. in chapter 2

  356. and chapter 4,

  357. so we know

  358. it's Nazareth.

  359. Nazareth was a

  360. small,

  361. obscure town.

  362. so obscure

  363. that it doesn't

  364. get mentioned

  365. even once

  366. in the Old

  367. Testament

  368. or in the

  369. Apocrypha

  370. or in any

  371. of the rabbinic

  372. literature.

  373. It doesn't get

  374. a single mention

  375. in any of those

  376. things.

  377. For these reasons,

  378. up until recent

  379. archaeological discoveries,

  380. many skeptical

  381. scholars doubted

  382. that Nazareth

  383. was even a real

  384. place.

  385. When Philip

  386. tells his friend

  387. Nathaniel that

  388. Jesus of Nazareth

  389. is the promised

  390. Messiah that has

  391. come,

  392. Nathaniel famously

  393. responded in

  394. John 1.45,

  395. can anything

  396. good come

  397. from Nazareth?

  398. Nazareth is

  399. estimated to have

  400. had about 200

  401. residents during

  402. the time of

  403. Jesus.

  404. So it's basically

  405. a village,

  406. not much bigger

  407. than our church.

  408. It's a small

  409. town where

  410. everyone knows

  411. everyone,

  412. so everyone

  413. would have heard

  414. about the

  415. homecoming of

  416. Jesus.

  417. This is Jesus'

  418. only recording

  419. return to his

  420. hometown,

  421. Nazareth,

  422. after his

  423. public ministry

  424. began in

  425. Matthew 4.

  426. And as we can

  427. see in this

  428. passage,

  429. Jesus was already

  430. by this point

  431. quite famous.

  432. We see in

  433. chapter 14,

  434. verse 1,

  435. that Herod the

  436. Tetrarch has

  437. heard about

  438. Jesus' fame.

  439. His reputation

  440. precedes him.

  441. The locals

  442. have already

  443. heard of the

  444. mighty works

  445. that Jesus has

  446. done elsewhere

  447. in Capernaum.

  448. Jesus comes

  449. home as what

  450. we might call

  451. the hometown

  452. hero,

  453. the local

  454. boy makes

  455. good,

  456. the small

  457. town obscure

  458. boy that

  459. grew up and

  460. went into the

  461. big city and

  462. made it.

  463. He comes

  464. home as the

  465. miracle worker

  466. and the

  467. esteemed teacher

  468. acclaimed by

  469. the crowds,

  470. and he takes

  471. his seat,

  472. the honors

  473. seat in the

  474. synagogue,

  475. and he starts

  476. to teach them.

  477. He's the

  478. visiting scholar,

  479. the distinguished

  480. lecturer,

  481. and he's no

  482. stranger.

  483. He's their

  484. own child

  485. that grew

  486. up.

  487. He grew up

  488. and is going

  489. to the

  490. synagogue most

  491. likely.

  492. It's a proud

  493. moment for

  494. the small,

  495. humble town

  496. of Nazareth.

  497. And at

  498. first,

  499. the reception

  500. seems warm.

  501. In verse 54,

  502. it says that the

  503. people at the

  504. synagogue were

  505. astonished by

  506. his teaching.

  507. That's the

  508. same word that

  509. was used to

  510. describe the

  511. reaction of the

  512. crowds who

  513. were favorable

  514. toward Jesus

  515. in chapter 7,

  516. verse 28,

  517. after he preached

  518. the Sermon on

  519. the Mount,

  520. the crowd said

  521. about him,

  522. he teaches as

  523. someone who has

  524. authority,

  525. unlike these

  526. scribes of the

  527. law.

  528. So similarly

  529. here,

  530. the crowds are

  531. marveling,

  532. saying,

  533. where did this

  534. man get this

  535. wisdom and

  536. these mighty

  537. works?

  538. They're amazed.

  539. However,

  540. the sweet

  541. reception soon

  542. turns sour,

  543. as wonder

  544. and marveling

  545. turns into

  546. skepticism,

  547. familiarity

  548. turns into

  549. cynicism,

  550. and celebration

  551. turns into

  552. envy.

  553. If you examine

  554. the structure

  555. of chapter 13,

  556. verse 53 to

  557. 58,

  558. you can see

  559. that it's

  560. structured as

  561. a chiasm.

  562. The first

  563. half of the

  564. passage is

  565. mirrored by

  566. repeated words

  567. and phrases

  568. in the second

  569. half of the

  570. passage.

  571. And this

  572. parallel structure

  573. highlights the

  574. change,

  575. the turning

  576. point in the

  577. crowd's response.

  578. First,

  579. Jesus comes to

  580. his hometown,

  581. and teaches.

  582. At the end,

  583. Jesus says,

  584. the prophet has

  585. no honor in

  586. his hometown.

  587. Then he says,

  588. the townspeople

  589. are astonished

  590. by Jesus

  591. in verse 54.

  592. But in verse 57,

  593. it says,

  594. the same townspeople

  595. took offense

  596. at Jesus.

  597. In verse 54,

  598. the people ask,

  599. where did this

  600. man get this

  601. wisdom and

  602. these mighty

  603. works?

  604. Astonishment,

  605. wonder,

  606. marveling.

  607. And then that

  608. turns in verse 56

  609. to where did

  610. this man get

  611. all these things?

  612. to doubt,

  613. to cynicism,

  614. taking offense.

  615. Something fishy

  616. going on here.

  617. He's one of us.

  618. He grew up

  619. in our synagogue.

  620. He didn't

  621. apprentice under

  622. prestigious rabbi.

  623. He didn't have

  624. an elite education.

  625. Where did this

  626. man get

  627. all the wisdom

  628. and power?

  629. It doesn't add up.

  630. He must

  631. be a charlatan.

  632. Aren't we

  633. also prone

  634. to become

  635. envious

  636. of people's

  637. successes?

  638. He's no

  639. better than I.

  640. If I had

  641. the same

  642. opportunities

  643. that he had,

  644. if I had

  645. the connections

  646. he had,

  647. if I had

  648. the platform

  649. that he had,

  650. then I can

  651. be just as

  652. successful.

  653. Why does

  654. she have

  655. so many

  656. friends

  657. and get

  658. so much

  659. attention

  660. and affection

  661. from others?

  662. She's no

  663. better than I.

  664. But envy

  665. is sin.

  666. Envy

  667. occurs

  668. only where

  669. the love

  670. of self

  671. trumps

  672. over the

  673. love of

  674. neighbor.

  675. It is a

  676. failure to

  677. rejoice

  678. with those

  679. who rejoice

  680. and weep

  681. with those

  682. who weep

  683. as God's

  684. word commands

  685. us.

  686. And envy

  687. is not

  688. merely

  689. a horizontal

  690. offense.

  691. It is also

  692. a vertical

  693. offense.

  694. Envy

  695. resents

  696. the sovereignty

  697. of the God

  698. who sovereignly

  699. orders the

  700. affairs of

  701. men.

  702. Envy

  703. doubts

  704. the goodness

  705. and generosity

  706. of God

  707. our Father

  708. toward us.

  709. And the

  710. turn

  711. of the

  712. crowd,

  713. the changing

  714. of the

  715. crowd,

  716. hinges

  717. on verses

  718. 55 and

  719. 56,

  720. which is

  721. the center

  722. of the

  723. chiasm

  724. that stands

  725. alone.

  726. It's the

  727. lone part

  728. of that

  729. structure

  730. that doesn't

  731. have a

  732. matching

  733. element.

  734. It's meant

  735. to be

  736. highlighted

  737. and focused.

  738. And that's

  739. the center

  740. right here.

  741. Is not

  742. this the

  743. carpenter's

  744. son?

  745. Is not

  746. his mother

  747. called Mary?

  748. And are

  749. not his

  750. brothers,

  751. James and

  752. Joseph and

  753. Simon and

  754. Judas,

  755. and are

  756. not all

  757. his sisters

  758. with us?

  759. These are

  760. questions,

  761. the central

  762. questions that

  763. surround Jesus'

  764. identity,

  765. his humble

  766. origin.

  767. Is not

  768. this the

  769. carpenter's

  770. son?

  771. Notice

  772. that it's

  773. the definite

  774. article,

  775. the carpenter's

  776. son.

  777. The definite

  778. article suggests

  779. familiarity.

  780. Everyone knew

  781. that Jesus'

  782. legal father

  783. was Joseph,

  784. the village

  785. carpenter.

  786. The word

  787. carpenter is a

  788. general term

  789. that means

  790. builder,

  791. and he likely

  792. made wooden

  793. plows and

  794. yokes for

  795. the farmers

  796. in the

  797. village.

  798. He's a

  799. tradesman.

  800. His job,

  801. he has a

  802. blue-collar

  803. profession.

  804. It is an

  805. honest and

  806. respectable

  807. profession to

  808. be sure,

  809. but Joseph

  810. was a

  811. carpenter.

  812. He was

  813. no rabbi.

  814. And that

  815. raises the

  816. question concerning

  817. Jesus that

  818. the people

  819. voiced in

  820. John 7,

  821. 15,

  822. how is it

  823. that this

  824. man has

  825. learning when

  826. he has

  827. never studied?

  828. The polemic

  829. against Jesus

  830. continues in

  831. verse 55.

  832. Is not his

  833. mother called

  834. Mary?

  835. It's interesting

  836. that they point

  837. out that she

  838. was called

  839. Mary rather

  840. than simply

  841. saying,

  842. is not his

  843. mother Mary?

  844. Mary.

  845. I think this

  846. might be

  847. because Mary

  848. was one of

  849. the most

  850. common and

  851. ordinary names

  852. in the New

  853. Testament.

  854. Imagine an

  855. ordinary,

  856. everyday,

  857. run-of-the-mill

  858. gal, and that

  859. gal would be

  860. named Mary.

  861. Israeli

  862. historian Tal

  863. Elan compiled

  864. a list of

  865. all-known

  866. names of

  867. Jewish women

  868. living in

  869. Israel and

  870. Palestine

  871. between

  872. 330 B.C.

  873. and 200 A.D.

  874. and she

  875. found out that

  876. 25% of the

  877. women were

  878. named Mary.

  879. The

  880. commonness of

  881. the name

  882. Mary is borne

  883. out by

  884. biblical evidence.

  885. For example,

  886. in addition to

  887. Mary, the

  888. mother of

  889. Jesus,

  890. mentioned here

  891. in Matthew

  892. 13,

  893. 55,

  894. in Matthew

  895. 27,

  896. 56,

  897. it mentions

  898. two other

  899. Marys,

  900. Mary Magdalene

  901. and Mary,

  902. the mother of

  903. James and

  904. Joseph,

  905. who is

  906. most likely

  907. Mary,

  908. the wife

  909. of Clopas,

  910. mentioned in

  911. John 19,

  912. 25.

  913. So there's

  914. three already.

  915. And then

  916. there's

  917. Mary of

  918. Bethany,

  919. sister of

  920. Lazarus and

  921. Martha,

  922. who is

  923. consistently

  924. described as

  925. being Mary

  926. of Bethany,

  927. distinguishing her

  928. from Mary

  929. of Magdala,

  930. Mary Magdalene,

  931. even though the

  932. two have

  933. historically been

  934. conflated by

  935. some people.

  936. I don't think

  937. the Bible

  938. intentionally

  939. distinguishes

  940. !

  941. them.

  942. Paul greets

  943. yet another

  944. Mary,

  945. a fifth Mary,

  946. who lived in

  947. Rome in

  948. Romans 16,

  949. 16.

  950. In Acts

    Acts 12:12

  951. 12,

  952. verse 12,

  953. there's another

  954. Mary who is

  955. called the

  956. mother of

  957. John Mark,

  958. the author of

  959. the Gospel

  960. of Mark.

  961. His mother was

  962. named Mary

  963. also.

  964. So Mary,

  965. there's a lot

  966. of Marys.

  967. We don't have

  968. as many Marys in

  969. our church,

  970. but we do have

  971. lots of

  972. Joshua's and

  973. Daniel's.

  974. So Mary was

  975. the most

  976. common,

  977. ordinary

  978. female name

  979. in those

  980. days,

  981. and that

  982. emphasizes

  983. the townspeople's

  984. point.

  985. Is not

  986. his mother

  987. called

  988. Mary?

  989. His mother

  990. isn't some

  991. exotic,

  992. otherworldly

  993. Persephone

  994. or Cleopatra.

  995. No,

  996. his mother

  997. isn't Queen

  998. Mary or

  999. even Lady

  1000. Mary.

  1001. No,

  1002. it's just

  1003. plain old

  1004. Mary from

  1005. the block,

  1006. that Mary

  1007. number six.

  1008. What can

  1009. possibly be so

  1010. special about

  1011. her son?

  1012. And are

  1013. not his

  1014. brothers James

  1015. and Joseph

  1016. and Simon

  1017. and Judas?

  1018. His brothers,

  1019. they're our

  1020. childhood buddies.

  1021. We wrestled

  1022. and tussled

  1023. with them and

  1024. ran around

  1025. playing tag

  1026. with them.

  1027. We played

  1028. hopscotch

  1029. with them

  1030. growing up.

  1031. And are

  1032. not all his

  1033. sisters with

  1034. us?

  1035. Their

  1036. sisters live

  1037. among us.

  1038. They're

  1039. married to

  1040. my friends

  1041. and my

  1042. neighbors.

  1043. How can

  1044. a man

  1045. whose

  1046. pedigree,

  1047. whose family

  1048. tree is so

  1049. public and

  1050. so ordinary

  1051. be someone

  1052. so special

  1053. and extraordinary?

  1054. as Jesus

  1055. says in verse

  1056. 57,

  1057. a prophet is

  1058. not without

  1059. honor except

  1060. in his

  1061. hometown and

  1062. in his own

  1063. household.

  1064. We have a

  1065. similar proverb

  1066. in English,

  1067. don't we?

  1068. Familiarity

  1069. breeds

  1070. contempt.

  1071. We often

  1072. assume that

  1073. what is near

  1074. and what is

  1075. familiar

  1076. cannot be

  1077. special,

  1078. cannot be

  1079. truly good.

  1080. good.

  1081. But don't

  1082. let your

  1083. familiarity

  1084. with Jesus

  1085. and the

  1086. claims of

  1087. Christianity

  1088. turn that

  1089. into contempt.

  1090. Maybe you

  1091. grew up in

  1092. a Christian

  1093. family and

  1094. you're tempted

  1095. to have

  1096. contempt for

  1097. what you

  1098. were taught.

  1099. Maybe someone

  1100. has told you,

  1101. well you're

  1102. only a

  1103. Christian because

  1104. you grew up

  1105. in a Christian

  1106. home and

  1107. because you

  1108. grew up in

  1109. the Christian

  1110. West in the

  1111. United States

  1112. of America.

  1113. If you were

  1114. born in Saudi

  1115. Arabia,

  1116. you'd be

  1117. Muslim.

  1118. Maybe you

  1119. feel the

  1120. sting of

  1121. that

  1122. criticism.

  1123. But if you

  1124. think about

  1125. it,

  1126. that's a

  1127. logical

  1128. sleight of

  1129. hand.

  1130. You can

  1131. say that

  1132. about any

  1133. worldview.

  1134. You're

  1135. three times

  1136. more likely

  1137. to be a

  1138. skeptical,

  1139. humanistic

  1140. atheist if

  1141. you're born

  1142. in Boston,

  1143. Massachusetts,

  1144. as opposed

  1145. to Boston,

  1146. Kentucky.

  1147. Yes,

  1148. that's a

  1149. real town

  1150. in Kentucky.

  1151. Three times

  1152. more likely.

  1153. But what

  1154. does that

  1155. say about

  1156. the merits

  1157. of atheism?

  1158. Nothing.

  1159. You have to

  1160. weigh the

  1161. merits of

  1162. the ideas

  1163. themselves.

  1164. Likewise,

  1165. you must

  1166. consider the

  1167. claims of

  1168. Christ on

  1169. its own

  1170. merit.

  1171. So what

  1172. do you

  1173. make of

  1174. Jesus?

  1175. This passage

  1176. brings into

  1177. stark relief

  1178. the scandal

  1179. of the

  1180. incarnation of

  1181. the Son of

  1182. God.

  1183. Today is the

  1184. first Sunday

  1185. of Advent,

  1186. which celebrates

  1187. the coming of

  1188. Christ to

  1189. earth,

  1190. into our

  1191. world.

  1192. And because

  1193. as Christians

  1194. we know

  1195. that Jesus

  1196. is the

  1197. risen and

  1198. ascended and

  1199. exalted

  1200. Lord,

  1201. we can

  1202. sometimes forget

  1203. the humility

  1204. of our

  1205. Lord Jesus

  1206. Christ in

  1207. his coming.

  1208. Do you

  1209. know that

  1210. Jesus learned

  1211. a trade?

  1212. Is not

  1213. this the

  1214. carpenter's

  1215. son?

  1216. Indeed,

  1217. Jesus is

  1218. himself called

  1219. a carpenter

  1220. in Mark

    Mark 6:3

  1221. chapter 6,

  1222. verse 3,

  1223. because he

  1224. learned that

  1225. trade in

  1226. his father's

  1227. shop.

  1228. Do you

  1229. know that

  1230. Jesus had

  1231. a human

  1232. mother?

  1233. That's a

  1234. truly mind-boggling

  1235. fact.

  1236. Jesus had

  1237. an ordinary

  1238. human mother

  1239. in Mary.

  1240. He had a

  1241. gestation period

  1242. in her womb.

  1243. Mary went

  1244. into labor

  1245. and she gave

  1246. birth to

  1247. Jesus as a

  1248. baby.

  1249. Jesus grew

  1250. up like any

  1251. other boy.

  1252. He didn't

  1253. come out

  1254. of the

  1255. womb

  1256. running.

  1257. No,

  1258. He came

  1259. out.

  1260. He had

  1261. to crawl

  1262. first and

  1263. then cruise

  1264. and then

  1265. walk and

  1266. then run.

  1267. Jesus did

  1268. not come out

  1269. of the womb

  1270. speaking fluent

  1271. Aramaic.

  1272. He had to

  1273. learn to

  1274. speak.

  1275. It says in

  1276. Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2:52

  1277. verse 52,

  1278. Jesus increased

  1279. in wisdom and

  1280. in stature and

  1281. in favor with

  1282. God and man.

  1283. Do you

  1284. know that

  1285. Jesus had

  1286. brothers and

  1287. sisters?

  1288. Some Christian

  1289. denominations teach

  1290. that Mary is

  1291. ever virgin.

  1292. They call this the

  1293. doctrine of the

  1294. perpetual virginity

  1295. of Mary, that

  1296. she was a virgin

  1297. before and

  1298. during and

  1299. after the

  1300. birth of Jesus.

  1301. And therefore

  1302. they argue,

  1303. they insist that

  1304. Jesus could not

  1305. have had any

  1306. siblings.

  1307. Their claim is

  1308. based on two

  1309. biblical arguments.

  1310. First, they point

  1311. to John 19,

  1312. 26 to 27.

  1313. As Jesus is

  1314. dying on the

  1315. cross, he

  1316. entrusts the

  1317. care of his

  1318. mother Mary,

  1319. not to his

  1320. brothers or to

  1321. his other

  1322. siblings, but

  1323. to his

  1324. disciple John.

  1325. And they

  1326. infer from

  1327. that that Jesus

  1328. could not have

  1329. had any

  1330. siblings because

  1331. if he did,

  1332. he would not

  1333. have entrusted

  1334. the care of

  1335. his mother to

  1336. his disciple.

  1337. That's, I

  1338. think, a huge

  1339. and a mistaken

  1340. assumption.

  1341. Can it simply

  1342. be the case that

  1343. Jesus' siblings

  1344. were not on the

  1345. scene?

  1346. Or that they

  1347. no longer

  1348. lived in the

  1349. same town as

  1350. his mother?

  1351. It says

  1352. explicitly in

  1353. John 7, 5

  1354. that not even

  1355. his brothers

  1356. believed in

  1357. Jesus.

  1358. Can it be that

  1359. Jesus wanted to

  1360. entrust the care

  1361. of his precious

  1362. mother not to

  1363. his unbelieving

  1364. brothers who

  1365. think he's a

  1366. crazy cook, but

  1367. rather because he

  1368. wanted to entrust

  1369. the care of his

  1370. mother to a

  1371. trusted disciple,

  1372. his beloved

  1373. disciple John?

  1374. I think that's

  1375. far more likely,

  1376. especially when

  1377. we have a

  1378. passage like

  1379. ours this

  1380. morning that

  1381. speaks explicitly

  1382. of Jesus'

  1383. siblings.

  1384. That brings up

  1385. the second

  1386. argument that

  1387. some people

  1388. make, that

  1389. they argue

  1390. that in the

  1391. biblical Hebrew

  1392. and Aramaic,

  1393. the word for

  1394. cousin or

  1395. relative is

  1396. non-existent,

  1397. so they use

  1398. instead the

  1399. word for

  1400. brother or

  1401. sister to

  1402. refer to

  1403. relatives and

  1404. kinsmen.

  1405. That's true.

  1406. However, one

  1407. major problem

  1408. with their

  1409. argument is

  1410. that the

  1411. gospel of

  1412. Matthew is

  1413. not written

  1414. in Hebrew

  1415. and Aramaic,

  1416. it's written

  1417. in Greek.

  1418. And in

  1419. Greek, there

  1420. is a word

  1421. for relative.

  1422. And in

  1423. Greek, there

  1424. is a word

  1425. for cousin.

  1426. And in the

  1427. New Testament

  1428. Greek, the

  1429. word brother

  1430. or sister is

  1431. never used

  1432. to mean

  1433. cousin, because

  1434. those words

  1435. exist.

  1436. Colossians 4.10

  1437. says that Mark

  1438. is the cousin

  1439. of Barnabas.

  1440. Luke 1.36

  1441. refers to

  1442. Mary's cousin

  1443. Elizabeth as

  1444. her relative.

  1445. Another word.

  1446. And remember

  1447. the immediate

  1448. context of our

  1449. passage here,

  1450. which speaks of

  1451. Jesus' immediate

  1452. family members,

  1453. his father and

  1454. his mother,

  1455. so it's only

  1456. natural to assume

  1457. that he's speaking

  1458. of his actual

  1459. brothers and

  1460. siblings, his

  1461. sisters.

  1462. Some argue

  1463. that the

  1464. perpetual virginity

  1465. of Mary, as

  1466. did some

  1467. denominations argue,

  1468. is a historical

  1469. doctrine that the

  1470. church has always

  1471. held.

  1472. However, that's

  1473. not true.

  1474. The doctrine of

  1475. the perpetual

  1476. virginity of

  1477. Mary does not

  1478. appear on the

  1479. scene until the

  1480. fourth century, and

  1481. most of that in

  1482. the context of

  1483. polemical debate

  1484. about the

  1485. superiority of

  1486. celibacy over

  1487. marriage.

  1488. It's not

  1489. dissimilar to

  1490. how the

  1491. doctrine of

  1492. Trinity has

  1493. been dragged

  1494. into the

  1495. debate, the

  1496. modern debate

  1497. over

  1498. complementarianism

  1499. and egalitarianism,

  1500. for some of you

  1501. who are familiar

  1502. with that, and

  1503. how some

  1504. scholars have

  1505. unwittingly

  1506. walked into

  1507. Trinitarian

  1508. heresies while

  1509. in those

  1510. polemical

  1511. contexts.

  1512. An early

  1513. church father

  1514. Tertullian from

  1515. the second

  1516. century, earlier

  1517. on, clearly

  1518. stated that Jesus

  1519. had real

  1520. biological

  1521. brothers, and

  1522. that after giving

  1523. birth to Jesus,

  1524. Mary did

  1525. consummate her

  1526. marriage once

  1527. for all.

  1528. In fact, that's

  1529. the clear biblical

  1530. implication of

  1531. Matthew 1.25,

  1532. that Mary did

  1533. not remain a

  1534. virgin after the

  1535. birth of Christ,

  1536. because it

  1537. says that

  1538. Joseph did

  1539. not know

  1540. his wife

  1541. intimately,

  1542. conjugally,

  1543. until she

  1544. had given

  1545. birth to

  1546. Jesus.

  1547. The natural

  1548. reading of

  1549. the verse

  1550. implies that

  1551. after Mary

  1552. gave birth to

  1553. Jesus, Joseph

  1554. did have

  1555. normal conjugal

  1556. relations with

  1557. her.

  1558. And why

  1559. should that

  1560. surprise us?

  1561. Because the

  1562. Bible teaches

  1563. it commands

  1564. regular conjugal

  1565. relations between

  1566. husband and

  1567. wife in 1

  1568. Corinthians 7.

  1569. the idea of

  1570. the perpetual

  1571. virginity of

  1572. Mary, that

  1573. Jesus had no

  1574. siblings, this

  1575. lessens the

  1576. radical nature of

  1577. Jesus' incarnation.

  1578. Jesus is the

  1579. Son of God,

  1580. yes, but he

  1581. really took on

  1582. human flesh.

  1583. He really was

  1584. born of woman,

  1585. born under the

  1586. law.

  1587. He really was

  1588. the Son of Man

  1589. in every way

  1590. except for sin.

  1591. He was raised

  1592. in a bustling

  1593. home with

  1594. rowdy brothers,

  1595. he knows what

  1596. it's like for

  1597. siblings to be

  1598. jerks toward

  1599. him, like in

  1600. this passage.

  1601. Hebrews 2,

  1602. 14 to 18,

  1603. which we read

  1604. for our

  1605. assurance of

  1606. pardon, talks

  1607. about the

  1608. significance of

  1609. the true

  1610. humanity of

  1611. Christ.

  1612. Since

  1613. therefore the

  1614. children share

  1615. in flesh and

  1616. blood, he

  1617. himself likewise

  1618. partook of the

  1619. same things,

  1620. that through

  1621. death he

  1622. might destroy

  1623. the one who

  1624. has the power

  1625. of death, that

  1626. is the devil,

  1627. and deliver

  1628. all those who

  1629. through fear

  1630. of death

  1631. were subject

  1632. to lifelong

  1633. slavery.

  1634. For surely it

  1635. is not angels

  1636. that he helps,

  1637. but he helps

  1638. the offspring

  1639. of Abraham.

  1640. Therefore he

  1641. had to be made

  1642. like his

  1643. brothers in

  1644. every respect,

  1645. so that he

  1646. might become

  1647. a merciful and

  1648. faithful high

  1649. priest in the

  1650. service of God,

  1651. to make

  1652. propitiation for

  1653. the sins of

  1654. the people.

  1655. For because he

  1656. himself has

  1657. suffered when

  1658. tempted, he's

  1659. able to help

  1660. those who are

  1661. being tempted.

  1662. Jesus had to

  1663. be made like

  1664. his brothers in

  1665. every respect.

  1666. If Jesus is

  1667. not truly man,

  1668. he cannot rightly

  1669. represent humanity

  1670. as our high

  1671. priest.

  1672. If Jesus is not

  1673. truly man, he

  1674. cannot make

  1675. atonement for the

  1676. sins of man.

  1677. If Jesus is not

  1678. truly man, he

  1679. cannot deliver

  1680. mortal men from

  1681. the power of

  1682. death.

  1683. death.

  1684. In order to

  1685. help man, he

  1686. must become a

  1687. man.

  1688. And Matthew

  1689. 13, 53 to 58

  1690. teaches us that

  1691. Jesus indeed

  1692. became a man in

  1693. every respect.

  1694. He lived as a

  1695. man, he died as

1696. a man, so that he

  1697. might save men and

  1698. women like you and

  1699. me from sin and

  1700. death.

  1701. That's the scandal

  1702. of the incarnation.

  1703. How can the

  1704. king of kings

  1705. take the form

  1706. of a servant?

  1707. How can the

  1708. creator of the

  1709. heavens and the

  1710. earth take the

  1711. form of a

  1712. creature?

  1713. How can the

  1714. potter become

  1715. the clay?

  1716. How can the

  1717. architect of the

  1718. house become the

  1719. cornerstone of the

  1720. house that he is

  1721. building?

  1722. How can the

  1723. author of the

  1724. book become the

  1725. protagonist of the

  1726. book?

  1727. Why should Jesus

  1728. endure the

  1729. humiliation that he

  1730. endures in his

  1731. hometown of Nazareth?

  1732. He's not this, the

  1733. carpenter's son?

  1734. Well, do you not

  1735. know?

  1736. He's also the son

  1737. of God.

  1738. He's the king, the

  1739. prince of peace.

  1740. That's how we want

  1741. to tell off those

  1742. Nazarenes.

  1743. But instead, Jesus

  1744. willingly endured

  1745. that humiliation.

  1746. He did come as

  1747. the carpenter's son.

1748. He did come as the

1749. son of Mary, as the

  1750. brother of James and

  1751. Joseph and Judas and

  1752. Simon.

1753. And it shows us the

  1754. humility of Christ,

  1755. our Savior.

  1756. Jesus did not go

  1757. through life, detached

  1758. from the day-to-day

  1759. realities of humanity

1760. with a halo around his

  1761. head and floating an

  1762. inch above the ground

  1763. everywhere he went.

1764. He was not an angel.

  1765. He was flesh and

  1766. blood.

  1767. He nursed at his

  1768. mother's breast as a

  1769. babe.

1770. He was the eldest son

  1771. in his father's

  1772. carpentry shop.

  1773. He knew what it's

1774. like to get sawdust in

1775. his eyes at the shop.

1776. He knew what it's like

1777. to clean up after his

  1778. younger siblings.

  1779. And most importantly,

  1780. Jesus died a humiliating

1781. death on a Roman cross

1782. in our place to save us

  1783. from our sins.

1784. Jesus came down to the

  1785. miry pit of humanity,

1786. the pit of our squalor

1787. and sin so that he might

1788. lift us up, save us from

1789. sin and death, and bring

1790. us and reconcile us to

  1791. God our Father.

  1792. Jesus knew the fragility

  1793. of human life.

  1794. And because Jesus has

1795. been tempted as we are

1796. in every respect and yet

  1797. without sin, he's able,

  1798. it says, to sympathize

  1799. with our weaknesses.

1800. He's able to help us

  1801. when we are being

  1802. tempted.

1803. Do you know this morning

1804. that Jesus knows and he

  1805. understands what you are

1806. feeling and what you are

  1807. going through?

1808. Do you know that you

1809. don't have to come to

1810. Jesus by putting on a

  1811. face, acting like

  1812. everything's perfect?

1813. After you put all your

  1814. life together, then you

1815. can finally come to Jesus

  1816. and meet him.

1817. That's not what you have

  1818. to do.

  1819. Because Jesus is the

  1820. humble king.

1821. Because he took on our

  1822. flesh.

  1823. Because he knows our

  1824. infirmities.

  1825. Because he has become

  1826. like his brothers in

  1827. every way.

  1828. The true humanity of

  1829. Jesus has made many

  1830. people throughout history

  1831. despise him.

1832. He is a man like me.

1833. There's no way he could

  1834. have done the miracles

  1835. recorded in the Gospels.

  1836. He's a man like me.

1837. There's no way he rose

  1838. from the dead.

  1839. He's a man like me.

  1840. There's no way he is a

  1841. son of God.

1842. There's no way he can be

  1843. the blameless atoning

  1844. sacrifice for sin.

1845. But to say such things is

1846. to make the same mistake

1847. as the people of Nazareth

1848. who took offense at Jesus.

1849. So I urge you this morning

1850. don't join the long list of

  1851. hapless people who have

1852. perished for not listening to

1853. the prophet of the Lord.

1854. He says in verse 58 that

1855. Jesus did not do many

  1856. mighty works there because

  1857. of their unbelief.

  1858. Unbelief and the

  1859. importance of faith are

  1860. recurring themes in this

  1861. Gospel of Matthew.

  1862. Actually all throughout

  1863. Scripture we see that

  1864. faith is a prerequisite

  1865. for the miraculous works

  1866. of God.

  1867. Jesus says later in

  1868. Matthew 21 21

1869. Truly I say to you

  1870. if you have faith

  1871. and do not doubt

1872. even if you say to this

  1873. mountain

1874. be taken up and thrown

  1875. into the sea

  1876. it will happen.

  1877. Jesus does not do

  1878. many mighty works

  1879. in Nazareth

  1880. because of the

  1881. townspeople's unbelief.

  1882. In a more detailed

  1883. account of Jesus' visit

  1884. to Nazareth

1885. recorded in Luke chapter 4

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  1886. the townspeople say to

  1887. Jesus

  1888. Doubtless

  1889. or Jesus says to

  1890. all of the townspeople

  1891. Doubtless you will

  1892. quote to me this

  1893. proverb

  1894. Physician heal yourself

  1895. What we have heard

  1896. you did at Capernaum

  1897. do here in your

  1898. hometown as well.

  1899. These people were

  1900. demanding that Jesus

  1901. perform the same

  1902. mighty works that he

  1903. did elsewhere in

  1904. Capernaum

  1905. but Jesus did not

  1906. indulge their

  1907. prideful unbelief.

  1908. Instead he said

  1909. to this evil and

  1910. unbelieving generation

1911. will be given only the

  1912. sign of the prophet

  1913. Jonah.

  1914. Matthew 12

  1915. 39

  1916. Jesus does

1917. as you see in the

  1918. gospel of John

  1919. John 10

  1920. 37 and 38

  1921. this is stated explicitly

  1922. he does do miracles

  1923. and signs

  1924. and wonders

  1925. to help people

  1926. who come to him

  1927. with faith

  1928. seeking understanding

  1929. who believe in him

  1930. and want to be

  1931. helped.

  1932. However

  1933. Jesus

  1934. steadfastly

  1935. refuses to

  1936. indulge

  1937. the whims of people

  1938. who question him

  1939. out of their pride

  1940. and unbelief.

  1941. Jesus will not be

  1942. reduced to a genie

  1943. in a bottle

  1944. or a cheap magician

  1945. that does tricks

  1946. upon demand.

1947. And I think this is

  1948. important because

  1949. in order to truly

  1950. follow Christ

  1951. in order to truly

  1952. submit to God

  1953. we need humility

  1954. we need faith

  1955. that takes God

  1956. and his word

  1957. and submits to him.

  1958. only

  1959. and if people

  1960. say

  1961. people who will

  1962. only believe in God

  1963. on their own terms

  1964. if you do this

  1965. and this

  1966. and you prove this

  1967. to me

  1968. then I will believe

  1969. in you

  1970. they'll only

  1971. obey God

  1972. on their own terms

  1973. too.

  1974. Well I'll obey you

  1975. if I like what

  1976. you're saying

  1977. if I like what

  1978. you're telling me

  1979. to do

  1980. if it doesn't

  1981. cost me

  1982. that much

  1983. if I don't need

  1984. to sacrifice

  1985. too much

  1986. only those

  1987. who believe

  1988. God on his

  1989. terms

  1990. by faith

  1991. will obey

  1992. God

  1993. on his

  1994. terms.

  1995. So what do you

  1996. make of Christ

  1997. this morning?

  1998. For those who

  1999. come to him

  2000. with settled

  2001. skepticism

  2002. and doubt

  2003. Jesus offers

  2004. only one sign

  2005. the sign

  2006. of the prophet

  2007. Jonah

  2008. and that's

  2009. the sign

  2010. that Jesus

  2011. explained

  2012. in Matthew

  2013. 12

  2014. 40 to 41

  2015. for just as

  2016. Jonah was

  2017. three days

  2018. and three nights

  2019. in the belly

  2020. of the great

  2021. fish

  2022. so will

  2023. the son

  2024. of man

  2025. be three days

  2026. and three nights

  2027. in the heart

  2028. of the earth.

  2029. The man

  2030. of Nineveh

  2031. will rise

  2032. up at

  2033. the judgment

  2034. with this

  2035. generation

  2036. and condemn

  2037. it for they

  2038. repented

  2039. at the

  2040. preaching

  2041. of Jonah

  2042. and behold

  2043. something

  2044. greater

  2045. than Jonah

  2046. is here.

  2047. The sign

  2048. of the prophet

  2049. Jonah

  2050. is Jesus'

  2051. death

  2052. and resurrection.

  2053. He died

  2054. on the cross

  2055. for our sins

  2056. and he was

  2057. buried

  2058. in the heart

  2059. of the earth

  2060. in the realm

  2061. of the dead

  2062. and he was

  2063. raised on

  2064. the third

  2065. day.

  2066. That's the

  2067. sign

  2068. that Jesus

  2069. offers

  2070. and without

  2071. interruption

  2072. from the first

  2073. century

  2074. until now

  2075. Christians

  2076. have died

  2077. proclaiming

  2078. that Jesus

  2079. is the risen

  2080. son of God.

  2081. That he did

  2082. die

  2083. and that he

  2084. was raised

  2085. on the third

  2086. day.

  2087. And when

  2088. Jonah preached

  2089. repentance

  2090. as a prophet

  2091. in the great

  2092. city of Nineveh

  2093. the entire

  2094. city repented

  2095. but this

  2096. puny town

  2097. of Nazareth

  2098. spurned

  2099. the greatest

  2100. of all prophets

  2101. the son

  2102. of God.

  2103. will you

  2104. trust him

  2105. as your

  2106. savior

  2107. and redeemer?

  2108. How will

  2109. you

  2110. how

  2111. how you

  2112. answer that

  2113. question

  2114. will determine

  2115. your eternal

  2116. destiny

  2117. whether you

  2118. enter the

  2119. kingdom of

  2120. heaven or

  2121. not.

  2122. If you

  2123. pay attention

  2124. in your

  2125. Bibles

  2126. to the

  2127. broader

  2128. context

  2129. of this

  2130. passage

  2131. you might

  2132. see that

  2133. just before

  2134. Jesus

  2135. began his

  2136. third

  2137. teaching

  2138. discourse

  2139. which is

  2140. in chapter

  2141. 13

  2142. the parables

  2143. of the

  2144. kingdom

  2145. of God

  2146. just

  2147. immediately

  2148. before he

  2149. preached

  2150. that he

  2151. talked about

  2152. how his

  2153. family

  2154. his

  2155. brothers

  2156. and sisters

  2157. and his

  2158. mother

  2159. are not

  2160. his

  2161. biological

  2162. mother

  2163. and brothers

  2164. and sisters

  2165. but those

  2166. who do

  2167. the will

  2168. of God

  2169. and then

  2170. now

  2171. right after

  2172. right

  2173. immediately

  2174. after the

  2175. third

  2176. discourse

  2177. Jesus

  2178. says

  2179. essentially

  2180. the exact

  2181. same

  2182. thing

  2183. a prophet

  2184. is not

  2185. without

  2186. honor

  2187. except

  2188. in his

  2189. hometown

  2190. and in

  2191. his

  2192. own

  2193. household

  2194. Jesus

  2195. said

  2196. whoever

  2197. receives

  2198. me

  2199. receives

  2200. the one

  2201. who sent

  2202. me

  2203. and whoever

  2204. receives

  2205. a prophet

  2206. will receive

  2207. a prophet's

  2208. reward

  2209. if you

  2210. receive

  2211. Jesus

  2212. as the

  2213. ultimate

  2214. prophet

  2215. the

  2216. anti-messianic

  2217. prophet

  2218. then you

  2219. receive

  2220. God

  2221. himself

  2222. and have

  2223. fellowship

  2224. with him

  2225. and enter

  2226. the kingdom

  2227. of heaven

  2228. it's not

  2229. his biological

  2230. family

  2231. but all

  2232. those who

  2233. receive

  2234. Jesus

  2235. in faith

  2236. who will

  2237. enter

  2238. the kingdom

  2239. of heaven

  2240. Jesus

  2241. intentionally

  2242. bookends

  2243. the parables

  2244. of the kingdom

  2245. of heaven

  2246. with the

  2247. story about

  2248. his families

  2249. and story

  2250. about his

  2251. hometown

  2252. visit

  2253. to redraw

  2254. the boundaries

  2255. of the

  2256. people

  2257. of God

  2258. people

  2259. of God

  2260. are not

  2261. the Jews

  2262. the ethnic

  2263. Jews

  2264. people of God

  2265. are not

  2266. those who

  2267. are genealogically

  2268. close to

  2269. Jesus

  2270. the people

  2271. of God

  2272. are all those

  2273. who repent

  2274. of their sins

  2275. and believe

  2276. in Jesus

  2277. Christ

  2278. as some

  2279. people have

  2280. said

  2281. God has

  2282. no

  2283. grandchildren

  2284. children

  2285. you cannot

  2286. be saved

  2287. because your

  2288. parents are

  2289. Christians

  2290. you cannot

  2291. be saved

  2292. because you

  2293. grew up

  2294. in church

  2295. you can

  2296. only be

  2297. saved

  2298. because you

  2299. have yourself

  2300. put your

  2301. faith in

  2302. Jesus Christ

  2303. as your

  2304. Lord and

  2305. Savior

  2306. of course

  2307. Jesus'

  2308. biological

  2309. family can

  2310. put faith

  2311. in him

  2312. too

  2313. which

  2314. his

  2315. mother

  2316. obviously

  2317. has done

  2318. at some

  2319. point

  2320. later in

  2321. her life

  2322. and as

  2323. his

  2324. brothers

  2325. have

  2326. done

  2327. Acts

  2328. 1.14

  2329. indicates

  2330. that other

  2331. siblings of

  2332. Jesus

  2333. also came

  2334. to faith

  2335. but most

  2336. prominently

  2337. we know

  2338. Apostle

  2339. James

  2340. the leader

  2341. of the

  2342. church

  2343. of Jerusalem

  2344. was a

  2345. brother

  2346. of Jesus

  2347. later

  2348. convert

  2349. Apostle

  2350. Jude

  2351. who

  2352. authored

  2353. the book

  2354. of Jude

  2355. was a

  2356. brother

  2357. of Jesus

  2358. according

  2359. to church

  2360. tradition

  2361. the kingdom

  2362. of heaven

  2363. became theirs

  2364. not because

  2365. of their

  2366. nearness

  2367. to Jesus

  2368. in their

  2369. lineage

  2370. but because

  2371. of their

  2372. faith in

  2373. Jesus

  2374. then in

  2375. chapter 14

  2376. the scene

  2377. shifts from

  2378. Jesus'

  2379. hometown

  2380. to Herod's

  2381. palace

  2382. quite the

  2383. change

  2384. it says

  2385. in verse

  2386. 1

  2387. at that

  2388. time

  2389. Herod the

  2390. tetrarch

  2391. heard about

  2392. the fame

  2393. of Jesus

  2394. and he

  2395. said to

  2396. his servants

  2397. this is

  2398. John the

  2399. Baptist

  2400. he has

  2401. been raised

  2402. from the

  2403. dead

  2404. that is

  2405. why

  2406. these

  2407. miraculous

  2408. powers

  2409. are at

  2410. work

  2411. in him

  2412. apparently

  2413. John the

  2414. Baptist

  2415. is already

  2416. dead

  2417. by this

  2418. point

  2419. but

  2420. Matthew

  2421. hasn't

  2422. yet

  2423. told us

  2424. of the

  2425. fact

  2426. that

  2427. John

  2428. died

  2429. so

  2430. that

  2431. prompts

  2432. this

  2433. literary

  2434. flashback

  2435. starting

  2436. in verse

  2437. 3

  2438. to

  2439. recount

  2440. how

  2441. John

  2442. the

  2443. Baptist

  2444. died

  2445. it says

  2446. in verses

  2447. 3-4

  2448. for

  2449. Herod

  2450. had seized

  2451. John

  2452. and bound

  2453. him

  2454. and put

  2455. him in

  2456. prison

  2457. for the

  2458. sake

  2459. of

  2460. Herodias

  2461. his brother

  2462. Philip's

  2463. wife

  2464. because

  2465. John

  2466. had been

  2467. saying

  2468. to him

  2469. it is

  2470. not lawful

  2471. for you

  2472. to have

  2473. her

  2474. the

  2475. Herod

  2476. in view

  2477. here

  2478. is not

  2479. Herod

  2480. the first

  2481. but he

  2482. is Herod

  2483. the tetrarch

  2484. as he's

  2485. called in

  2486. verse 1

  2487. this is

  2488. Herod

  2489. Antipas

  2490. Herod

  2491. the first

  2492. son

  2493. Herod

  2494. the first

  2495. is the

  2496. one that

  2497. we saw

  2498. in Matthew

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  2499. chapter 2

  2500. who massacred

  2501. all the

  2502. boys in Bethlehem

  2503. under the age

  2504. of 2

  2505. in an

  2506. attempt

  2507. to kill

  2508. baby

  2509. Jesus

  2510. Herod

  2511. Antipas

  2512. is his

  2513. son

  2514. after

  2515. Herod

  2516. the first

  2517. death

  2518. his

  2519. kingdom

  2520. which was

  2521. a client

  2522. state

  2523. of the

  2524. Roman

  2525. empire

  2526. over

  2527. what is

  2528. now

  2529. modern

  2530. day

  2531. Israel

  2532. was

  2533. divided

  2534. into

  2535. four

  2536. tetrarchies

  2537. four

  2538. regions

  2539. and his

  2540. three

  2541. sons

  2542. and his

  2543. sister

  2544. ruled

  2545. over

  2546. the

  2547. four

  2548. areas

  2549. and

  2550. Herod

  2551. Antipas

  2552. the one

  2553. named

  2554. here

  2555. was one

  2556. of those

  2557. rulers

  2558. he was

  2559. not

  2560. technically

  2561. a king

  2562. even though

  2563. he is

  2564. called

  2565. that

  2566. later

  2567. in

  2568. verse

  2569. nine

  2570. he was

  2571. a

  2572. tetrarch

  2573. who

  2574. desperately

  2575. wanted

  2576. to be

  2577. king

  2578. Herod

  2579. Antipas

  2580. had

  2581. jailed

  2582. John

  2583. the

  2584. Baptist

  2585. for

  2586. the

  2587. sake

  2588. of

  2589. Herodias

  2590. his

  2591. brother

  2592. Philip's

  2593. wife

  2594. so that

  2595. tells

  2596. all the

  2597. story

  2598. doesn't

  2599. it

  2600. his

  2601. brother

  2602. Philip's

  2603. wife

  2604. Herodias

  2605. was

  2606. Herod's

  2607. half

  2608. brother

  2609. Philip's

  2610. wife

  2611. but

  2612. while

  2613. Herod

  2614. was

  2615. visiting

  2616. Philip

  2617. his

  2618. brother

  2619. he fell

  2620. in love

  2621. with

  2622. his

  2623. brother's

  2624. wife

  2625. and the

  2626. two

  2627. agreed

  2628. !

  2629. their

  2630. respective

  2631. spouses

  2632. in doing

  2633. so not

  2634. only did

  2635. they commit

  2636. adultery

  2637. with each

  2638. other

  2639. they also

  2640. committed

  2641. incest

  2642. according to

  2643. biblical

  2644. guidelines

  2645. in

  2646. Leviticus

  2647. 18

  2648. John

  2649. the

  2650. Baptist

  2651. being

  2652. a

  2653. true

  2654. prophet

  2655. of

  2656. the

  2657. Lord

  2658. pointed

  2659. out

  2660. that

  2661. what

  2662. Herod

  2663. Antipas

  2664. has

  2665. done

  2666. is

  2667. not

  2668. lawful

  2669. it

  2670. was

  2671. not

  2672. lawful

  2673. for

  2674. him

  2675. to

  2676. have

  2677. Herodias

  2678. as

  2679. his

  2680. wife

  2681. and

  2682. notice

  2683. how

  2684. Matthew

  2685. drives

  2686. that

  2687. point

  2688. home

  2689. by

  2690. calling

  2691. Herodias

  2692. not

  2693. Herod's

  2694. wife

  2695. his

  2696. brother

  2697. Philip's

  2698. wife

  2699. Herod

  2700. wanted

  2701. to

  2702. kill

  2703. John

  2704. for

  2705. speaking

  2706. the

  2707. truth

  2708. but

  2709. he

  2710. feared

  2711. the

  2712. people

  2713. who

  2714. held

  2715. John

  2716. to

  2717. be

  2718. a

  2719. prophet

  2720. so

  2721. he

  2722. settled

  2723. for

  2724. imprisoning

  2725. John

  2726. instead

  2727. but

  2728. then

  2729. his

  2730. birthday

  2731. comes

  2732. around

  2733. in

  2734. verse

  2735. six

  2736. he's

  2737. hosting

  2738. a

  2739. lavish

  2740. feast

  2741. having

  2742. a

  2743. birthday

  2744. party

  2745. the

  2746. daughter

  2747. of

  2748. Herodias

  2749. dances

  2750. before

  2751. him

  2752. and

  2753. the

  2754. company

  2755. and

  2756. he

  2757. is

  2758. so

  2759. pleased

  2760. by

  2761. her

  2762. he

  2763. promises

  2764. I'll

  2765. give

  2766. you

  2767. anything

  2768. you

  2769. ask

  2770. he

  2771. makes

  2772. an

  2773. oath

  2774. and

  2775. prompted

  2776. by her

  2777. vengeful

  2778. mother

  2779. Herodias

  2780. she

  2781. the

  2782. young

  2783. girl

  2784. says

  2785. give

  2786. me

  2787. the

  2788. head

  2789. of

  2790. John

  2791. the

  2792. Baptist

  2793. here

  2794. on

  2795. the

  2796. platter

  2797. and

  2798. you

  2799. could

  2800. see

  2801. what

  2802. kind

  2803. of

  2804. woman

  2805. Herodias

  2806. is

  2807. she

  2808. doesn't

  2809. just

  2810. want

  2811. John

  2812. the

  2813. Baptist

  2814. killed

  2815. she

  2816. wants

  2817. proof

  2818. and

  2819. she

  2820. wants

  2821. to

  2822. gloat

  2823. over

  2824. him

  2825. as

  2826. his

  2827. head

  2828. is

  2829. served

  2830. on

  2831. a

  2832. platter

  2833. to

  2834. the

  2835. banquet

  2836. that

  2837. she

  2838. is

  2839. at

  2840. like

  2841. the

  2842. lamb's

  2843. head

  2844. at

  2845. Rosh

  2846. Shanna

  2847. or

  2848. something

  2849. like

  2850. that

  2851. and

  2852. Herod

  2853. is

  2854. sorry

  2855. to

  2856. have

  2857. to

  2858. oblige

  2859. that

  2860. gruesome

  2861. request

  2862. he says

  2863. in

  2864. verse

  2865. 9

  2866. at

  2867. this

  2868. point

  2869. of

  2870. the

  2871. story

  2872. Herod

  2873. didn't

  2874. want

  2875. to

  2876. kill

  2877. John

  2878. he

  2879. had

  2880. already

  2881. imprisoned

  2882. him

  2883. and

  2884. effectively

  2885. silenced

  2886. him

  2887. and

  2888. he

  2889. was

  2890. posing

  2891. no

  2892. threat

  2893. to

  2894. him

  2895. whatsoever

  2896. he

  2897. was

  2898. just

  2899. an

  2900. interesting

  2922. to

  2950. in

  2953. why

  2955. he

  2956. put

  2957. John

  2958. the

  2967. he

  2974. he

  2975. put

  2976. John

  2977. to

  2979. initially

  2980. when

  2981. he

  2982. wanted

  2983. to

  2984. because

  2985. he

  2986. says

  2987. in

  2988. verse

  2989. 5

  2990. he

  2991. prophet

  2992. why

  2993. did

  2994. Herod

  2999. ill

  3000. advised

  3002. on

  3010. 6

  3011. Herodias

  3012. daughter

  3013. so

  3014. pleased

  3015. him

  3016. with

  3017. her

  3018. dance

  3019. later

  3020. on

  3021. why

  3022. does

  3023. Herod

  3024. behead

  3025. John

  3026. even

  3027. though

  3028. at

  3029. that

  3030. point

  3031. he

  3032. doesn't

  3033. want

  3034. to

  3035. because

  3036. it

  3037. says

  3038. in

  3040. 9

  3043. his

  3045. and

  3046. his

  3048. everything

  3049. Herod

  3050. does

  3051. in

  3052. this

  3053. chapter

  3054. Herod

  3055. does

  3056. because

  3057. of

  3058. other

  3059. people

  3060. he's

  3061. so

  3062. concerned

  3063. with

  3064. what

  3065. other

  3066. people

  3067. will

  3068. think

  3069. what

  3070. other

  3071. people

  3072. will

  3073. say

  3074. this

  3075. is

  3076. what

  3077. the

  3078. Bible

  3079. calls

  3080. the

  3081. fear

  3082. of

  3083. man

  3084. he's

  3085. the

  3086. king

  3087. but

  3088. he

  3089. doesn't

  3090. act

  3091. like

  3092. a

  3093. king

  3094. this

  3095. he's

  3096. no

  3097. true

  3098. sovereign

  3099. he's

  3100. a

  3101. ship

  3102. that

  3103. is

  3104. tossed

  3105. to

  3106. and

  3107. throw

  3108. by

  3109. the

  3110. waves

  3111. of

  3112. people's

  3113. opinions

  3114. and

  3115. whims

  3116. he's

  3117. a

  3118. people

  3119. pleaser

  3120. manipulated

  3121. and controlled

  3122. by those

  3123. around

  3124. him

  3125. this

  3126. is

  3127. starkly

  3128. different

  3129. from

  3130. the

  3131. portrait

  3132. of

  3133. Jesus

  3134. that

  3135. we

  3136. see

  3137. in

  3138. the

  3139. preceding

  3140. passage

  3141. the

  3142. skeptical

  3143. and

  3144. envious

  3145. hometown

  3146. crowd

  3147. looked

  3148. down

  3149. upon

  3150. Jesus

  3151. and

  3152. questioned

  3153. his

  3154. credentials

  3155. they

  3156. said

  3157. to

  3158. him

  3159. physician

  3160. heal

  3161. yourself

  3162. what

  3163. we

  3164. have

  3165. heard

  3166. you

  3167. did

  3168. at

  3169. Capernaum

  3170. do

  3171. here

  3172. in

  3173. your

  3174. hometown

  3175. as

  3176. well

  3177. but

  3178. Jesus

  3179. instead

  3180. of

  3181. embarking

  3182. on

  3183. a

  3184. campaign

  3185. to

  3186. prove

  3187. himself

  3188. and

  3189. performing

  3190. these

  3191. extra

  3192. miracles

  3193. and

  3194. saying

  3195. see

  3196. look

  3197. what

  3198. I

  3199. can

  3200. do

  3201. I

  3202. am

  3203. who

  3204. they

  3205. say

  3206. I

  3207. am

  3208. no

  3209. Jesus

  3210. doesn't

  3211. do

  3212. that

  3213. he

  3214. did

  3215. not

  3216. do

  3217. many

  3218. mighty

  3219. works

  3220. there

  3221. because

  3222. of

  3223. their

  3224. unbelief

  3225. rather than

  3226. indulging

  3227. and catering

  3228. to their

  3229. wicked

  3230. unbelief

  3231. Jesus

  3232. only

  3233. offers

  3234. the

  3235. sign

  3236. of

  3237. the

  3238. prophet

  3239. Jonah

  3240. in

  3241. this

  3242. Jesus

  3243. models

  3244. for

  3245. us

  3246. what

  3247. it

  3248. looks

  3249. like

  3250. for

  3251. us

  3252. to

  3253. seek

  3254. to

  3255. please

  3256. God

  3257. rather

  3258. than

  3259. men

  3260. Proverbs

  3261. 29

  3262. 25

  3263. says

  3264. the

  3265. fear

  3266. of

  3267. man

  3268. lays

  3269. a

  3270. snare

  3271. but

  3272. whoever

  3273. trusts

  3274. in

  3275. the

  3276. Lord

  3277. is

  3278. safe

  3279. we

  3280. fear

  3281. people

  3282. and

  3283. what

  3284. they

  3285. might

  3286. say

  3287. about

  3288. us

  3289. or

  3290. to

  3291. us

  3292. because

  3293. we

  3294. mistakenly

  3295. think

  3296. that

  3297. people

  3298. can give

  3299. us

  3300. love

  3301. and

  3302. acceptance

  3303. that

  3304. people

  3305. can

  3306. make

  3307. us

  3308. safe

  3309. and

  3310. secure

  3311. that

  3312. people

  3313. can

  3314. give

  3315. us

  3316. make

  3317. our

  3318. dreams

  3319. come

  3320. true

  3321. but

  3322. people

  3323. are

  3324. fickle

  3325. and

  3326. they're

  3327. unreliable

  3328. only

  3329. God

  3330. can

  3331. give

  3332. us

  3333. unchanging

  3334. and

  3335. eternal

  3336. love

  3337. and

  3338. acceptance

  3339. only

  3340. God

  3341. can

  3342. give

  3343. us

  3344. true

  3345. eternal

  3346. safety

  3347. and

  3348. security

  3349. and

  3350. for

  3351. this

  3352. reason

  3353. he

  3354. who

  3355. fears

  3356. man

  3357. and

  3358. tries

  3359. to

  3360. please

  3361. man

  3362. lays

  3363. a

  3364. snare

  3365. for

  3366. himself

  3367. that

  3368. will

  3369. entrap

  3370. him

  3371. but

  3372. whoever

  3373. trusts

  3374. in the

  3375. Lord

  3376. is

  3377. safe

  3378. it's

  3379. important

  3380. that we

  3381. learn this

  3382. lesson

  3383. because if

  3384. we don't

  3385. we cannot

  3386. be

  3387. faithful

  3388. witnesses

  3389. do

  3390. do

  3391. do you

  3392. think it

  3393. was easy

  3394. for

  3395. John

  3396. to

  3397. tell

  3398. Herod

  3399. Antipas

  3400. that

  3401. his

  3402. marriage

  3403. to

  3404. Herodias

  3405. was

  3406. unlawful

  3407. it seems

  3408. that

  3409. John

  3410. had a

  3411. personal

  3412. acquaintance

  3413. he had

  3414. a personal

  3415. audience

  3416. with

  3417. Herod

  3418. so it's

  3419. not like

  3420. John

  3421. is denouncing

  3422. Herod

  3423. from his

  3424. wilderness

  3425. pulpit

  3426. he had

  3427. an opportunity

  3428. to personally

  3429. confront

  3430. Herod

  3431. about his

  3432. sin

  3433. and in

  3434. that moment

  3435. John

  3436. could have

  3437. easily

  3438. sidestep

  3439. the issue

  3440. well

  3441. Herod's

  3442. not going

  3443. to listen

  3444. to me

  3445. anyway

  3446. it's none

  3447. of my

  3448. business

  3449. I'll just

  3450. stay in

  3451. my lane

  3452. but if

  3453. you're a

  3454. prophet

  3455. or a

  3456. teacher

  3457. of God's

  3458. word

  3459. you don't

  3460. get to

  3461. pick

  3462. and choose

  3463. your

  3464. message

  3465. you're

  3466. not the

  3467. sender

  3468. or the

  3469. author

  3470. of the

  3471. message

  3472. you are

  3473. just

  3474. the

  3475. herald

  3476. you are

  3477. the

  3478. mailman

  3479. you convey

  3480. the message

  3481. of God

  3482. you deliver

  3483. it

  3484. and you

  3485. don't get

  3486. to sidestep

  3487. moral

  3488. issues

  3489. that the

  3490. Bible

  3491. clearly

  3492. speaks

  3493. of

  3494. when

  3495. your

  3496. co-workers

  3497. speak

  3498. condescendingly

  3499. of

  3500. Christians

  3501. and

  3502. mocks

  3503. Christian

  3504. ethics

  3505. will you

  3506. hide

  3507. your

  3508. faith

  3509. in

  3510. shame

  3511. or

  3512. will

  3513. you

  3514. identify

  3515. yourself

  3516. as a

  3517. follower

  3518. of

  3519. Christ

  3520. and

  3521. share

  3522. the

  3523. reproach

  3524. of

  3525. Christ

  3526. that

  3527. the

  3528. saints

  3529. across

  3530. the

  3531. ages

  3532. have

  3533. experienced

  3534. will

  3535. you

  3536. take

  3537. a

  3538. stand

  3539. for

  3540. your

  3541. Christian

  3542. convictions

  3543. even if

  3544. that means

  3545. you will

  3546. be

  3547. reviled

  3548. will you

  3549. overcome

  3550. your

  3551. hesitations

  3552. and fears

  3553. and share

  3554. the gospel

  3555. with your

  3556. neighbors

  3557. not knowing

  3558. how exactly

  3559. they will

  3560. respond

  3561. what happens

  3562. to our

  3563. in our passage

  3564. to John

  3565. the Baptist

  3566. here

  3567. of course

  3568. does not

  3569. bode well

  3570. for Jesus

  3571. because

  3572. throughout

  3573. the gospel

  3574. of Matthew

  3575. Matthew

  3576. has portrayed

  3577. Jesus

  3578. as coming

  3579. in

  3580. and following

  3581. in

  3582. the

  3583. ministry

  3584. that

  3585. John

  3586. the

  3587. Baptist

  3588. started

  3589. in

  3590. Matthew

    Matthew 3:2

  3591. 3

  3592. verse

  3593. 2

  3594. John

  3595. the

  3596. Baptist

  3597. preached

  3598. repent

  3599. for the

  3600. kingdom

  3601. of heaven

  3602. is at

  3603. hand

  3604. and then

  3605. when

  3606. Jesus

  3607. started

  3608. his

  3609. ministry

  3610. in

  3611. Matthew

  3612. 4

  3613. 17

  3614. he

  3615. began

  3616. with

  3617. the

  3618. exact

  3619. same

  3620. message

  3621. repent

  3622. for the

  3623. kingdom

  3624. of heaven

  3625. is at

  3626. hand

  3627. this is

  3628. because

  3629. John

  3630. is

  3631. Jesus'

  3632. forerunner

  3633. he is

  3634. the harbinger

  3635. of the

  3636. king

  3637. he is

  3638. the one

  3639. who

  3640. as

  3641. Matthew

  3642. 3

  3643. said

  3644. prepares

  3645. the

  3646. way

  3647. of

  3648. the

  3649. Lord

  3650. and

  3651. makes

  3652. the

  3653. path

  3654. of

  3655. the

  3656. Lord

  3657. straight

  3658. before

  3659. he

  3660. comes

  3661. he

  3662. goes

  3663. ahead

  3664. he's

  3665. the

  3666. harbinger

  3667. that

  3668. goes

  3669. on

  3670. ahead

  3671. of

  3672. the

  3673. king

  3674. to

  3675. announce

  3676. that

  3677. the

  3678. king

  3679. is

  3680. coming

  3681. so

  3682. then

  3683. the

  3684. unjust

  3685. execution

  3686. of

  3687. John

  3688. the

  3689. Baptist

  3690. in

  3691. this

  3692. chapter

  3693. foreshadows

  3694. how

  3695. people

  3696. will

  3697. ultimately

  3698. in

  3699. the

  3700. end

  3701. receive

  3702. Jesus

  3703. and

  3704. treat

  3705. him

  3706. killing

  3707. him

  3708. on

  3709. the

  3710. cross

  3711. and

  3712. this

  3713. passage

  3714. serves

  3715. as an

  3716. illustration

  3717. what

  3718. did

  3719. Jesus

  3720. teach

  3721. us

  3722. in

  3723. the

  3724. parable

  3725. of

  3726. the

  3727. weeds

  3728. that

  3729. the

  3730. sons

  3731. of

  3732. the

  3733. kingdom

  3734. and

  3735. the

  3736. sons

  3737. of

  3738. the

  3739. evil

  3740. one

  3741. coexist

  3742. until

  3743. the

  3744. end

  3745. they

  3746. coexist

  3747. there

  3748. will

  3749. always

  3750. be

  3751. this

  3752. tension

  3753. and

  3754. conflict

  3755. and

  3756. persecution

  3757. and

  3758. suffering

  3759. what

  3760. did

  3761. Jesus

  3762. teach

  3763. us

  3764. in

  3765. the

  3766. parable

  3767. of

  3768. the

  3769. mustard

  3770. seed

  3771. and

  3772. the

  3773. leaven

  3774. that

  3775. kingdom

  3776. of

  3777. God

  3778. does

  3779. not

  3780. come

  3781. at

  3782. once

  3783. to

  3784. dominate

  3785. the

  3786. earth

  3787. no

  3788. it

  3789. starts

  3790. seed

  3791. that

  3792. grows

  3793. gradually

  3794. until

  3795. it

  3796. becomes

  3797. the

  3798. largest

  3799. seed

  3800. and

  3801. the

  3802. largest

  3803. tree

  3804. in

  3805. the

  3806. garden

  3807. that

  3808. the

  3809. kingdom

  3810. of

  3811. God

  3812. grows

  3813. almost

  3814. imperceptively

  3815. it is

  3816. hidden

  3817. like

  3818. leaven

  3819. that is

  3820. hidden

  3821. inside

  3822. the

  3823. bread

  3824. John

  3825. the

  3826. foremost

  3827. prophet

  3828. of

  3829. God

  3830. from

  3831. the

  3832. old

  3833. covenant

  3834. summarily

  3835. being

  3836. beheaded

  3837. and

  3838. served

  3839. on a

  3840. platter

  3841. like

  3842. some

  3843. kind

  3844. of

  3845. animal

  3846. does

  3847. not

  3848. look

  3849. like

  3850. the

  3851. kingdom

  3852. of

  3853. heaven

  3854. has

  3855. come

  3856. in

  3857. power

  3858. does

  3859. it

  3860. Jesus

  3861. the

  3862. heir

  3863. of

  3864. the

  3865. kingdom

  3866. of

  3867. heaven

  3868. the

  3869. prince

  3870. being

  3871. crucified

  3872. does

  3873. not

  3874. look

  3875. like

  3876. the

  3877. kingdom

  3878. of

  3879. heaven

  3880. has

  3881. come

  3882. in

  3883. power

  3884. does

  3885. it

  3886. and

  3887. that's

  3888. why

  3889. Jesus

  3890. tells

  3891. this

  3892. story

  3893. as an

  3894. illustration

  3895. of the

  3896. parables

  3897. that he

  3898. has

  3899. just

  3900. told

  3901. but

  3902. don't

  3903. you

  3904. doubt

  3905. that

  3906. the

  3907. kingdom

  3908. of

  3909. God

  3910. has

  3911. come

  3912. in

  3913. power

  3914. and

  3915. one

  3916. day

  3917. though

  3918. you

  3919. might

  3920. not

  3921. see

  3922. today

  3923. it

  3924. will

  3925. be

  3926. consummated

  3927. the

  3928. kingdom

  3929. of

  3930. God

  3931. does

  3932. not

  3933. come

  3934. in

  3935. ways

  3936. that

  3937. can

  3938. be

  3939. observed

  3940. Jesus

  3941. said

  3942. in

  3943. Luke

  3944. 17

  3945. 20

  3946. so

  3947. don't

  3948. be

  3949. disheartened

  3950. when you

  3951. can't

  3952. see

  3953. the

  3954. kingdom

  3955. like

  3956. you

  3957. want

  3958. to

  3959. see

  3960. when

  3961. you

  3962. are

  3963. facing

  3964. sufferings

  3965. reviles

  3966. revilements

  3967. and persecutions

  3968. true

  3969. true

  3970. messengers

  3971. of

  3972. God

  3973. who

  3974. prophesy

  3975. and

  3976. preach

  3977. the

  3978. truth

  3979. of

  3980. God

  3981. regardless

  3982. of

  3983. whether

  3984. it

  3985. earns

  3986. them

  3987. the

  3988. favor

  3989. or

  3990. the

  3991. ire

  3992. of

  3993. man

  3994. will

  3995. be

  3996. persecuted

  3997. and

  3998. when

  3999. that

  4000. happens

  4001. it

  4002. might

  4003. seem

  4004. like

  4005. the

  4006. hereds

  4007. of

  4008. this

  4009. world

  4010. have

  4011. all

  4012. the

  4013. power

  4014. it

  4015. might

  4016. seem

  4017. as

  4018. though

  4019. the

  4020. kingdoms

  4021. of

  4022. this

  4023. world

  4024. are

  4025. the

  4026. real

  4027. kingdoms

  4028. with

  4029. lavish

  4030. palaces

  4031. and

  4032. banquets

  4033. and

  4034. birthday

  4035. parties

  4036. and

  4037. armies

  4038. at

  4039. their

  4040. disposal

  4041. but

  4042. we

  4043. must

  4044. not

  4045. forget

  4046. that

  4047. the

  4048. reality

  4049. that

  4050. Jesus

  4051. proclaimed

  4052. !

  4053. life,

  4054. death,

  4055. and

  4056. resurrection

  4057. and

  4058. ascension

  4059. and

  4060. he

  4061. now

  4062. reigns

  4063. at the

  4064. right

  4065. hand

  4066. of the

  4067. father

  4068. far above

  4069. all

  4070. rule

  4071. and

  4072. authority

  4073. and

  4074. power

  4075. and

  4076. dominion

  4077. and

  4078. above

  4079. every

  4080. name

  4081. that

  4082. is

  4083. named

  4084. we

  4085. might

  4086. not

  4087. see

  4088. it

  4089. yet

  4090. with

  4091. our

  4092. own

  4093. eyes

  4094. but

  4095. one

  4096. day

  4097. we

  4098. will

  4099. see

  4100. every

  4101. eye

  4102. will

  4103. see

  4104. every

  4105. tongue

  4106. will

  4107. confess

  4108. that

  4109. Jesus

  4110. is

  4111. Lord

  4112. and

  4113. every

  4114. knee

  4115. will

  4116. bow

  4117. before

  4118. him

  4119. so

  4120. let

  4121. us

  4122. press

  4123. on

  4124. with

  4125. that

  4126. day

  4127. and

  4128. as

  4129. witnesses

  4130. of

  4131. Jesus

  4132. Christ

  4133. let's

  4134. pray

  4135. together

  4136. Father

  4137. teach us

  4138. teach us

  4139. the

  4140. humility

  4141. of

  4142. Christ

  4143. that

  4144. we

  4145. might

  4146. not

  4147. think

  4148. Christ

  4149. unapproachable

  4150. unapproachable

  4151. and distant

  4152. rather

  4153. that we

  4154. might

  4155. see

  4156. that

  4157. Christ

  4158. is

  4159. humble

  4160. he

  4161. invites

  4162. us

  4163. to

  4164. come

  4165. to

  4166. him

  4167. and

  4168. as

  4169. we

  4170. come

  4171. to

  4172. him

  4173. we

  4174. are

  4175. accepted

  4176. and

  4177. loved

  4178. by

  4179. him

  4180. Lord

  4181. embolden

  4182. us

  4183. to

  4184. go out

  4185. to

  4186. this

  4187. world

  4188. as

  4189. witnesses

  4190. of

  4191. Jesus

  4192. Christ

  4193. to

  4194. proclaim

  4195. to

  4196. herald

  4197. the

  4198. kingdom

  4199. of

  4200. heaven

  4201. that

  4202. has

  4203. come

  4204. knowing

  4205. that

  4206. Lord

  4207. Jesus

  4208. King

  4209. Jesus

  4210. you

  4211. are

  4212. coming

  4213. back

  4214. help

  4215. us

  4216. to

  4217. be

  4218. faithful

  4219. servants

  4220. that

  4221. discharge

  4222. this

  4223. duty

  4224. of

  4225. heralding

  4226. the

  4227. king

  4228. who

  4229. has

  4230. come

  4231. and

  4232. the

  4233. king

  4234. who

  4235. is

  4236. coming

  4237. soon

  4238. in

  4239. Jesus

  4240. name

  4241. we

  4242. pray

  4243. amen
