  1. Good morning, church.

  2. It's such a privilege to bring to you guys God's word as we continue on in our Advent series.

  3. Today we're actually going to be taking a break from the book of Matthew.

  4. We're going to open up to the book of Isaiah.

  5. Isaiah in the Old Testament.

  6. We're going to be reading Isaiah chapter 9, verses 1 to 7.

    Isaiah 9:1–7

  7. If you are in need of a Bible, please feel free to raise your hand.

  8. One of us would be happy to grab a physical copy of a Bible that you can have and hold.

  9. It's our Christmas gift to you.

  10. Isaiah chapter 9, verses 1 to 7.

    Isaiah 9:1–7

  11. Let me pray for the reading of God's word.

  12. Heavenly Father, Christmas is just a few days away.

  13. And we thank you for it.

  14. We thank you for the reminder that to a people in darkness, in deep darkness, you have not abandoned.

  15. To a sinful people you have not rejected.

  16. But you have come.

  17. You have saved us.

  18. You have sent a child.

  19. And so we pray.

  20. Over the next hour, won't you open our eyes, illuminate our hearts, our eyes to see what a glorious child this is.

  21. A child whose name is unparalleled, unprecedented.

  22. The child we long to serve and worship for all eternity.

  23. We want to know this child, this boy, more.

  24. So help us.

  25. Fill us with your spirit.

  26. My words are all for naught unless your spirit falls afresh and fills this room.

  27. So we need you.

  28. We need you, Father.

  29. Father, we humble ourselves before the king.

  30. And ask that you would teach us today.

  31. So do that, Lord.

  32. In Jesus' name we pray.

  33. Amen.

  34. If you would rise, if you are able, for the reading of God's word.

  35. Isaiah 9.

  36. But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish.

  37. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali.

  38. But in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

  39. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

  40. Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shown.

  41. You have multiplied the nation.

  42. You have increased its joy.

  43. They rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

  44. For the yoke of his burden and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

  45. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.

  46. For to us a child is born.

  47. To us a son is given.

  48. And the government shall be upon his shoulder.

  49. And his name shall be called.

  50. Wonderful counselor.

  51. Mighty God.

  52. Everlasting father.

  53. Prince of peace.

  54. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.

  55. On the throne of David and over his kingdom to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.

  56. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

  57. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  58. You may be seated.

  59. It was one of the most miserable nights of my life.

  60. During my summer on missions in Indonesia, I was forced to go on this kayak camping trip.

  61. I spent six weeks at that point in the sweltering heat under the brutal sun in Indonesia.

  62. So I packed lightly for this trip.

  63. Thinking that it would be really just more of the same.

  64. But I didn't factor in that this river that I'd be kayaking on wrapped around the mountains.

  65. Meaning that the temperature would be significantly cooler.

  66. During the day, while kayaking in the sun, that hardly mattered.

  67. But once we pulled up onto the bank to camp for the night and the sun slowly started to set.

  68. I started feeling colder and colder.

  69. And when it came time to sleep, even though I was in a sleeping bag, in a hammock,

  70. I was so cold that I'm pretty sure I didn't sleep more than an hour.

  71. I was exhausted, spent from the day, but I had to curl up in a ball,

  72. shivering, chattering my teeth throughout the night.

  73. When I got up to try to see if there's anything that I could do,

  74. it was entirely pitch black.

  75. I've never seen anything really that dark.

  76. No moonlight, no starlight, no artificial lights.

  77. Just an obsidian black.

  78. I have never waited for the sun as much as I have that one night.

  79. I lost completely all sense of time.

  80. I didn't know if I had five hours to wait or five minutes to wait.

  81. But once dawn broke,

  82. I have never been so happy to see the sun,

  83. to feel its warmth,

  84. to see its rays pierce through the darkness.

  85. It literally sent shivers down my spine.

  86. In just a few short days, we celebrate Christmas.

  87. We watch movies, exchange gifts,

  88. gather around delicious food as we should.

  89. But lest we forget, Christmas is joyful,

  90. jovial, not because of the festivities and the food in themselves,

  91. but because Christmas marks the in-breaking of light.

  92. The first glow of dawn in a world long wrapped in night.

  93. For this weary world waits and waits and waits for hope,

  94. for peace, for light.

  95. Just as I waited for that sun that night.

  96. And our passage this morning teaches us that

  97. dawn indeed is coming.

  98. And it's found in an unexpected source.

  99. In the giving of a child.

  100. Of a boy.

  101. And so, Isaiah exhorts us,

  102. we need to hope in this child

  103. who brings light to a despairing dark world.

  104. That's the main point of my message today.

  105. And in turn, we're going to talk about the darkness,

  106. the dawn,

  107. and finally the deliverer.

  108. First, before we delve into this passage,

  109. it's important to set the context,

  110. to understand its context.

  111. Isaiah prophesied during the 8th century BC

  112. in both the northern kingdom of Israel

  113. and the southern kingdom of Judah.

  114. This time period is not an era of peace,

  115. of abundance,

  116. like King David had ushered in centuries ago.

  117. No, since then,

  118. bit by bit,

  119. battle by battle,

  120. Israel has been bleeding out,

  121. losing its wealth,

  122. its power,

  123. its glory,

  124. to its surrounding nations.

  125. And in particular,

  126. in his life,

  127. Isaiah sees God

  128. raise a prominent superpower from the east

  129. named Assyria.

  130. Because of the threat of Assyria's rising power,

  131. we read in Isaiah chapter 7,

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  132. two chapters ahead,

  133. that the northern kingdom of Israel

  134. allies with a pagan nation,

  135. Assyria.

  136. This partnership then leads the southern kingdom of Judah

  137. and her king Ahaz

  138. to ally with Assyria.

  139. So you see the northern kingdom,

  140. Israel with Syria,

  141. and the southern kingdom with Assyria.

  142. And Ahaz promises gold

  143. and loyalty to Assyria

  144. to defend the southern kingdom.

  145. Assyria.

  146. So a vicious military force,

  147. Assyria then goes and conquers Assyria,

  148. conquers Syria entirely,

  149. and inflicts major damage to Israel.

  150. First to the lands that belong to Zebulun

  151. and to Naphtali.

  152. But if you know your Bibles,

  153. you know that Assyria came to conquer

  154. the entire northern kingdom in 722 BC.

  155. Bloodshed, bondage, brutality,

  156. flood the lands of Israel,

  157. plunging them into deep darkness.

  158. And it's this darkness

  159. that our passage speaks about today.

  160. Be aware that this is not the result

  161. of military weakness or faulty strategy.

  162. The problem is not that the northern kingdom

  163. chose the wrong ally.

  164. They chose Syria, not Assyria.

  165. Throughout the Old Testament,

  166. military victory or defeat

  167. is consistently the result

  168. of Israel's right or wrong standing

  169. before the Lord.

  170. Battles that on paper,

  171. they have no battles,

  172. no business fighting in,

  173. they win.

  174. But battles that on paper,

  175. they should have won,

  176. they lose.

  177. So if that's the case,

  178. things don't look good

  179. for either Israel or Judah

  180. because they both turn

  181. to surrounding nations,

  182. spurning the Lord,

  183. rejecting his promises.

  184. They ought to have remembered

  185. all the battles

  186. that the Lord had won

  187. on their behalf.

  188. They should have followed David

  189. when he wrote in Psalm 20,

  190. some trust in chariots

  191. and some in horses,

  192. but we trust in the name

  193. of the Lord our God.

  194. But instead,

  195. they whore themselves out.

  196. They entrust themselves

  197. to idols,

  198. to other nations.

  199. Because of that sin,

  200. Assyria or Isaiah assures

  201. that it's not just Israel

  202. on the chopping block,

  203. but it's Judah too.

  204. He promises that Assyria

  205. will threaten Judah

  206. and devastate her.

  207. Then, even because of Assyria's sin,

  208. she too will be judged.

  209. You see this both

  210. in Isaiah 10, 12,

  211. when he writes,

  212. when the Lord has finished

  213. all his work on Mount Zion

  214. and on Jerusalem,

  215. he will punish the speech

  216. of the arrogant heart

  217. of the king of Assyria

  218. and the boastful look

  219. in his eyes.

  220. Whether it's Syria,

  221. Assyria,

  222. Judah,

  223. or Israel,

  224. all of these nations

  225. will be judged

  226. by a holy,

  227. righteous Lord

  228. because of their sin

  229. and their idolatry.

  230. This is a bleak picture.

  231. Not just for God's chosen people

  232. in Israel,

  233. but really for the whole

  234. of humanity.

  235. Every single one

  236. of these nations,

  237. Jew or Gentile,

  238. will be besieged,

  239. bound,

  240. broken,

  241. banished,

  242. and bereaved

  243. all because of their sin.

  244. No one is righteous.

  245. No, not one.

  246. And that problem

  247. hasn't stopped

  248. with these four nations.

  249. And the American freedom

  250. that we enjoy,

  251. we aren't under direct threat

  252. of enemies

  253. conquering our lands,

  254. pillaging our homes.

  255. But still gloom,

  256. anguish,

  257. darkness,

  258. still plague the lands

  259. today.

  260. Why is that?

  261. When our forefather Adam

  262. committed the first sin

  263. by eating the forbidden fruit,

  264. we were banished

  265. from the Garden of Eden.

  266. And sin came into the world

  267. and death through sin.

  268. And so death spread

  269. to all men

  270. because all sinned.

  271. So life east of Eden

  272. is marked by this gloom,

  273. this anguish,

  274. this darkness.

  275. Suffering,

  276. sickness,

  277. sadness mark

  278. daily life.

  279. And so much so

  280. that we forget

  281. that we actually do live

  282. in this darkness.

  283. That our eyes have grown

  284. accustomed to the darkness.

  285. us.

  286. We forget to realize

  287. that cancer doctors,

  288. police,

  289. divorce lawyers,

  290. military generals,

  291. therapists,

  292. coroners,

  293. social workers,

  294. environmentalists,

  295. security guards,

  296. they only have jobs

  297. because of the darkness

  298. of the fall.

  299. We live in a world

  300. marked by danger.

  301. A world where

  302. women shouldn't walk

  303. the streets at night alone.

  304. Where churches need

  305. to conduct background checks

  306. for children's ministry volunteers.

  307. Where parents should second guess

  308. giving their young child

  309. a smartphone

  310. with unfettered internet access.

  311. We live in a world

  312. marked by scarcity.

  313. A world where the poor

  314. will always be among us.

  315. Where 300 million people today

  316. can be classified

  317. as chronically hungry.

  318. Where people are cut

  319. from their jobs,

  320. miss mortgage payments,

  321. and have to fend

  322. for themselves on the streets.

  323. We live in a world

  324. marked by tragedy,

  325. by heartbreak.

  326. A world where

  327. children's size coffins

  328. are a thing.

  329. Where there are millions

  330. of divorces

  331. this past year

  332. in the states alone.

  333. And as we're sadly

  334. reminded this week

  335. where lives are cut short

  336. by gun violence

  337. and mass shootings.

  338. And it's all too easy

  339. to keep going.

  340. 2025,

  341. even with all its innovations

  342. and breakthroughs,

  343. was a painful reminder

  344. that this world

  345. is still shrouded

  346. in darkness.

  347. 2026,

  348. without final

  349. divine intervention,

  350. it'll be more of the same.

  351. The darkness

  352. doesn't just affect us

  353. from the outside,

  354. externally,

  355. but internally too.

  356. It settles within us.

  357. What does that look like?

  358. I think one of the

  359. clearest descriptions

  360. is what pastor

  361. and author David Powelson

  362. has called

  363. the anti-Psalm 23.

  364. Many of us know,

  365. love, cherish this psalm.

  366. The Lord is my shepherd,

  367. I shall not want.

  368. Powelson offers

  369. a striking contrast

  370. from that psalm

  371. that captures so well

  372. what this darkness

  373. looks like,

  374. what it feels like.

  375. As I read snippets

  376. of it,

  377. ask yourself honestly,

  378. do you feel

  379. that darkness?

  380. In what ways

  381. am I living out

  382. this anti-Psalm 23?

  383. I'm on my own.

  384. No one looks out

  385. for me

  386. or protects me.

  387. I experience

  388. a continual sense

  389. of need.

  390. Nothing's quite right.

  391. I'm always restless.

  392. I'm easily frustrated

  393. and often disappointed.

  394. It's a jungle.

  395. I feel overwhelmed.

  396. It's a desert.

  397. I'm thirsty.

  398. My soul feels broken,

  399. twisted, and stuck.

  400. I can't fix myself.

  401. I stumble down

  402. some dark paths.

  403. I'm haunted

  404. by emptiness

  405. and futility,

  406. the shadows of death.

  407. Death is waiting

  408. for me

  409. at the end

  410. of every road.

  411. But I'd rather

  412. not think about that.

  413. My cup

  414. is never

  415. quite full enough.

  416. I'm left empty.

  417. Disappointment

  418. follows me

  419. all the days

  420. of my life.

  421. Will I be alone

  422. forever?

  423. Homeless,

  424. free-falling

  425. into void?

  426. It's a living death

  427. and then I die.

  428. Plunged

  429. in thick darkness,

  430. this world

  431. is groaning

  432. all together

  433. for some light

  434. to break.

  435. Groaning

  436. for some sense

  437. of reprieve,

  438. some hope,

  439. some light.

  440. It is to these people

  441. living in this

  442. thick darkness

  443. that God addresses

  444. in this passage.

  445. And here

  446. it's glorious

  447. opening.

  448. But

  449. there will be

  450. no gloom

  451. for her

  452. who was in anguish

  453. to a helpless,

  454. undeserving world.

  455. God refuses

  456. to sit back

  457. idly.

  458. No amount

  459. of sin

  460. keeps God

  461. from manifesting

  462. his light

  463. to us.

  464. The land of

  465. Zebulun

  466. and Naphtali,

  467. which was located

  468. near the Sea of Galilee,

  469. beyond the Jordan,

  470. was previously

  471. held in contempt.

  472. The land that

  473. first felt

  474. the lash

  475. of Assyria,

  476. but by God's grace,

  477. a former time,

  478. gloom.

  479. In a latter time,

  480. glory.

  481. And it's not just

  482. to the Jews,

  483. but to the

  484. Galilee of the nations,

  485. or if you see

  486. in your ESV footnote,

  487. Galilee of the Gentiles.

  488. For these regions

  489. of Naphtali

  490. and Zebulun,

  491. given their location

  492. right next

  493. to the border,

  494. next to these

  495. pagan nations,

  496. it's always been

  497. something of

  498. a mixing pot.

  499. Canaanites,

  500. Arameans,

  501. Hittites,

  502. Mesopotamians,

  503. and the Hebrews,

  504. all just part

  505. of this mix.

  506. And after Assyria

  507. struck

  508. an exiled

  509. part of Israel,

  510. that part even

  511. became less pure,

  512. even more mixed

  513. ethnically,

  514. culturally,

  515. religiously,

  516. but even still

  517. to even

  518. an impure race,

  519. a mixed race,

  520. God does not

  521. hold back

  522. his light,

  523. foreshadowing

  524. that the Lord

  525. will no longer

  526. reserve his light

  527. just for his people,

  528. Israel,

  529. alone,

  530. but that God

  531. will bring the nations

  532. from the north,

  533. from the south,

  534. from the east,

  535. and from the west

  536. all to light.

  537. This is the exact hope

  538. depicted in verse 2

  539. when Isaiah says,

  540. the people who walked

  541. in darkness

  542. have seen a great light.

  543. Not just darkness,

  544. darkness,

  545. but Isaiah piles

  546. on the language.

  547. This is no

  548. ordinary darkness.

  549. Not just normal

  550. darkness

  551. when the sun sets,

  552. but a deep

  553. darkness

  554. that covers

  555. the lands

  556. 24-7.

  557. People,

  558. especially in

  559. Boston and

  560. Cambridge,

  561. as you guys know,

  562. can struggle

  563. with seasonal

  564. affective disorders,

  565. even in a place

  566. where the sun rises

  567. every single morning.

  568. How much more

  569. to dwell

  570. in darkness

  571. day after day

  572. with no warmth

  573. of sun on our faces,

  574. no light

  575. to brighten up

  576. our homes,

  577. but just

  578. deep,

  579. depressing,

  580. dreary darkness

  581. all around.

  582. That is our

  583. spiritual condition

  584. without the light

  585. of God.

  586. But yet still

  587. to these darkened

  588. people,

  589. God promises

  590. to shine

  591. his face

  592. upon them

  593. with his

  594. great light.

  595. And notice

  596. the confidence

  597. of Isaiah too.

  598. Many verbs

  599. in our passage,

  600. and in this verse

  601. in particular,

  602. are written

  603. in the perfect tense.

  604. They have seen.

  605. You have

  606. multiplied.

  607. All these events

  608. are manifestly

  609. in the future,

  610. but he speaks

  611. of them

  612. as if they have

  613. already happened.

  614. It's an example

  615. of the prophetic

  616. perfect,

  617. a feature

  618. of Hebrew prophecy

  619. that Isaiah,

  620. by the revelation

  621. of God,

  622. he knows

  623. with absolute

  624. certainty

  625. that these things

  626. will come to pass.

  627. He knows

  628. that darkness

  629. and death

  630. will not have

  631. the day.

  632. No,

  633. it belongs

  634. to God.

  635. On top of that,

  636. instead of

  637. depopulation

  638. and dwindling

  639. away,

  640. under the

  641. threat of war,

  642. the nation

  643. multiplies,

  644. as we read

  645. in verse 3.

  646. In this,

  647. God is fulfilling

  648. his promises

  649. to the patriarchs,

  650. to Abraham,

  651. to Isaac,

  652. to Jacob.

  653. He promised them

  654. hundreds and

  655. hundreds of years

  656. ago that he

  657. would multiply

  658. their offspring

  659. to make them

  660. a great

  661. and abundant

  662. nation.

  663. And the Lord

  664. is faithful

  665. to his promises,

  666. is he not?

  667. Is this not

  668. who our God

  669. is and what

  670. he regularly

  671. does for us?

  672. Because he

  673. keeps his promises,

  674. because of God's

  675. faithfulness,

  676. then joy,

  677. it springs up.

  678. In this one

  679. verse alone,

  680. this idea

  681. of joy,

  682. whether noun

  683. or verb form,

  684. it's repeated

  685. four times.

  686. Two of these

  687. instances

  688. hearken back

  689. to the

  690. happiest of times,

  691. the happiest of times

  692. for the Israelites

  693. via the powerful

  694. effect of nostalgia.

  695. First,

  696. the abundant

  697. harvest was a

  698. richly joyful

  699. time.

  700. As an agrarian

  701. culture,

  702. this time of

  703. the harvest

  704. determined how

  705. the rest of

  706. the year would

  707. go.

  708. If the harvest

  709. was plentiful,

  710. then what a

  711. relief,

  712. what provision.

  713. And to

  714. celebrate,

  715. the Jews

  716. kept the

  717. Feast of Booths,

  718. which was a

  719. week-long

  720. celebration

  721. throughout the

  722. lands.

  723. Imagine if

  724. all of the

  725. state of

  726. Massachusetts,

  727. we collectively

  728. celebrated God's

  729. faithfulness to

  730. us for an

  731. entire week

  732. straight.

  733. We all took

  734. a week of

  735. work off,

  736. and we

  737. celebrated in

  738. our streets,

  739. in our

  740. squares,

  741. recounting God's

  742. abundant

  743. faithfulness to

  744. us.

  745. Or secondly,

  746. they rejoice

  747. like when they

  748. divide the

  749. spoil.

  750. In 2 Kings

  751. 7, the

  752. capital of

  753. Israel,

  754. Samaria,

  755. is besieged.

  756. Just when an

  757. enemy surrounds

  758. a city,

  759. cuts it off

  760. so that no

  761. food, no

  762. water, no

  763. help can go

  764. in or out.

  765. And as a

  766. result, the

  767. Israelites, they

  768. live in

  769. absolute brutal

  770. conditions.

  771. They're so

  772. hungry, they're

  773. starving to

  774. death that they

  775. even resort to

  776. cannibalism.

  777. but by the

  778. divine providence

  779. of God, four

  780. lepers, because

  781. they have nothing

  782. else to lose,

  783. they go out of

  784. the city to

  785. the enemy, and

  786. they find not

  787. only that they

  788. have left, but

  789. that they have

  790. abandoned all

  791. their stuff.

  792. Horses, tents,

  793. food, gold,

  794. clothing, all for

  795. the taking.

  796. Can you just

  797. imagine the joy

  798. that pulsated

  799. throughout the

  800. city that one

  801. day?

  802. This is the

  803. kind of imagery

  804. that Isaiah is

  805. invoking.

  806. And notice

  807. too that, again,

  808. many of these

  809. verbs in this

  810. passage, they're

  811. in the passive

  812. form, they're

  813. really the divine

  814. passive, which

  815. are passive

  816. verbs that make

  817. the reader fill

  818. in the blank of

  819. who the actor

  820. is, namely

  821. God.

  822. It says,

  823. light shone

  824. on them.

  825. These will be

  826. burned.

  827. But verse

  828. three makes

  829. the doer of

  830. these actions

  831. explicit.

  832. You, you

  833. have done

  834. this.

  835. The Lord of

  836. hosts, the

  837. God of Israel,

  838. you, you

  839. have done

  840. this.

  841. So it is only

  842. fitting that

  843. Israel rejoices

  844. not before the

  845. stuff, not in

  846. the food and

  847. the riches of

  848. the spoil, but

  849. before the

  850. Lord, from

  851. whom every

  852. good gift,

  853. every perfect

  854. gift comes.

  855. And we do

  856. the same when

  857. our value

  858. systems are

  859. rightly ordered.

  860. We rejoice not

  861. before the

  862. gifts, but

  863. before the

  864. giver, before

  865. the Lord.

  866. And God's not

  867. done.

  868. Isaiah addresses

  869. how God breaks

  870. the chains of

  871. their bondage.

  872. Rather than just

  873. using one image,

  874. in verse four,

  875. he employs three

  876. powerful symbols.

  877. The yoke,

  878. the rod, the

  879. staff, each

  880. hammering home

  881. the inescapable

  882. weight of their

  883. oppression.

  884. Remember, there

  885. are no

  886. internationally

  887. agreed upon

  888. rules of war

  889. back then.

  890. There's no

  891. established Geneva

  892. convention that

  893. protected the

  894. humanity of war

  895. prisoners.

  896. No, the

  897. yoke, the

  898. staff, the

  899. rod, they

  900. were instruments

  901. of forced,

  902. back-breaking

  903. labor.

  904. Instruments of

  905. violent beatings

  906. that forced

  907. them to keep

  908. going even

  909. when they had

  910. nothing left

  911. to give.

  912. Just how

  913. liberating it

  914. would be for

  915. that yoke,

  916. that staff,

  917. that rod to

  918. be shattered

  919. by God.

  920. And he will

  921. do just as

  922. he did in the

  923. past, decisively

  924. on the day

  925. of Midian.

  926. In this

  927. flashback,

  928. Isaiah

  929. hearkens back

  930. to Judges

  931. seven.

  932. There, Israel

  933. is in a

  934. sorry state,

  935. completely

  936. overpowered,

  937. outnumbered by

  938. Midian.

  939. But before

  940. their battle,

  941. God cuts

  942. down the

  943. Israelite army

  944. from 32,000

  945. able-bodied men

  946. to only 300,

  947. less than

  948. 1% of its

  949. original size.

  950. Questionable

  951. military strategy

  952. all around,

  953. but yet these

  954. 300 men

  955. have victory

  956. before the

  957. Lord.

  958. God promises

  959. in verse 5,

  960. the boot

  961. that trampled

  962. our lands

  963. and our

  964. women and

  965. our children,

  966. the garment

  967. soaked with

  968. the blood

  969. of our men,

  970. symbols of

  971. our enemies'

  972. vicious conquests,

  973. they are used

  974. then as fuel

  975. for fire.

  976. In a great

  977. reversal,

  978. what was once

  979. used for fuel,

  980. for war,

  981. and for death,

  982. and for conquering,

  983. is now used

  984. for fuel,

  985. for fire,

  986. for warmth,

  987. for light,

  988. for life.

  989. So we've seen

  990. the effect

  991. of this great

  992. prophecy,

  993. but how does

  994. this great

  995. reversal come?

  996. So we read

  997. of this

  998. deliverer.

  999. The for

  1000. that starts

  1001. verse 6

  1002. introduces

  1003. the ground

  1004. clause,

  1005. the reason

  1006. for this

  1007. light,

  1008. the joy,

  1009. the peace,

  1010. and it

  1011. comes in

  1012. a most

  1013. unexpected

  1014. form.

  1015. It's a

  1016. child,

  1017. a boy.

  1018. Pastor Ray

  1019. Orlin once

  1020. said,

  1021. God's answer

  1022. to everything

  1023. that has

  1024. terrorized us

  1025. is a

  1026. child.

  1027. Again,

  1028. just as he

  1029. did with

  1030. Gideon,

  1031. God

  1032. delights

  1033. in using

  1034. what is

  1035. small,

  1036. what is

  1037. weak,

  1038. in the eyes

  1039. of this

  1040. world to

  1041. shame the

  1042. strong.

  1043. He uses

  1044. the foolish

  1045. to shame

  1046. the wise.

  1047. In a world

  1048. captivated by

  1049. grand displays

  1050. of power,

  1051. by massive

  1052. armies and

  1053. great wealth,

  1054. we're quick

  1055. to place our

  1056. hope in

  1057. human strength,

  1058. always scheming

  1059. to partner

  1060. up with

  1061. our

  1062. Assyrias,

  1063. with our

  1064. Assyrias.

  1065. Brothers and

  1066. sisters,

  1067. we ought not

  1068. dismiss the

  1069. little things,

  1070. like your

  1071. little church,

  1072. or your

  1073. little prayers,

  1074. your little

  1075. service,

  1076. your little

  1077. witness,

  1078. and most

  1079. importantly,

  1080. this little

  1081. child.

  1082. God

  1083. uses in

  1084. big ways.

  1085. God

  1086. deliberately

  1087. chooses this

  1088. weakest image,

  1089. a child,

  1090. to then

  1091. conquer

  1092. every single

  1093. one of our

  1094. enemies.

  1095. Sin,

  1096. death,

  1097. Satan.

  1098. You know,

  1099. it's easy to

  1100. think that

  1101. Christmas is a

  1102. time that is

  1103. tame,

  1104. domesticated,

  1105. safe,

  1106. brothers and

  1107. sisters,

  1108. Christmas is

  1109. the start of

  1110. the revolution,

  1111. the in-breaking

  1112. of the kingdom

  1113. of God.

  1114. And who is

  1115. this boy?

  1116. I hope it's

  1117. obvious to you

  1118. here,

  1119. but remember,

  1120. remember the

  1121. longing of the

  1122. Hebrews for

  1123. this Messiah.

  1124. There were at

  1125. least 700

  1126. years between

  1127. the prophecy

  1128. that you

  1129. read today

  1130. and the

  1131. birth of

  1132. this boy.

  1133. With 400

  1134. of those

  1135. years being

  1136. called the

  1137. 400 silent

  1138. years,

  1139. God seemed

  1140. to stop

  1141. speaking to

  1142. them all

  1143. together.

  1144. 400 years

  1145. of silence.

  1146. That was

  1147. just five

  1148. seconds of

  1149. silence.

  1150. What about

  1151. 400 years?

  1152. So understand

  1153. the momentous

  1154. occasion then

  1155. when Matthew

  1156. breaks this

  1157. prolonged silence

  1158. when he writes

  1159. in his gospel

  1160. and the

  1161. leaving of

  1162. Nazareth,

  1163. Jesus went

  1164. and lived in

  1165. Capernaum by

  1166. the sea in the

  1167. territory of

  1168. Zebulun and

  1169. Naphtali,

  1170. should sound

  1171. familiar,

  1172. so that what

  1173. was spoken by

  1174. the prophet

  1175. Isaiah might be

  1176. fulfilled.

  1177. And then he

  1178. proceeds to

  1179. quote this

  1180. exact passage,

  1181. verses 1 to 2,

  1182. from this exact

  1183. passage.

  1184. Matthew is

  1185. saying,

  1186. make no

  1187. mistake,

  1188. Jesus of

  1189. Nazareth,

  1190. this boy,

  1191. he is the

  1192. child of

  1193. prophecy.

  1194. And we

  1195. learn what

  1196. his name

  1197. will be

  1198. called.

  1199. And these

  1200. are glorious,

  1201. glorious names.

  1202. Wonderful

  1203. counselor,

  1204. mighty God,

  1205. everlasting

  1206. father,

  1207. prince of

  1208. peace.

  1209. We'll take

  1210. each one of

  1211. those names

  1212. in turn.

  1213. First,

  1214. Jesus embodied

  1215. otherworldly

  1216. wisdom.

  1217. When I was

  1218. 12, I was

  1219. learning about

  1220. decimals and

  1221. fractions and

  1222. reading Harry

  1223. Potter.

  1224. When Jesus

  1225. was 12, he

  1226. was confounding

  1227. even the most

  1228. learned Jewish

  1229. scholars.

  1230. Solomon

  1231. astounded the

  1232. ancient Near

  1233. East with his

  1234. wisdom and

  1235. knowledge.

  1236. Jesus declared

  1237. something greater

  1238. than Solomon

  1239. is here.

  1240. That word

  1241. wonderful is

  1242. thrown around in

  1243. our daily use so

  1244. often that it's

  1245. easy for this

  1246. title to feel

  1247. trite.

  1248. But this is more

  1249. than just saying

  1250. that Jesus was a

  1251. good listener and

  1252. just gave helpful

  1253. advice at times.

  1254. Jesus'

  1255. wonderful wisdom

  1256. inspired worship.

  1257. friendship.

  1258. Jesus wasn't just

  1259. the best of human

  1260. counselors, but his

  1261. wisdom existed on a

  1262. completely different

  1263. plane, on a

  1264. heavenly, higher

  1265. plane.

  1266. And it really is,

  1267. this really is a

  1268. divine title.

  1269. For later in Isaiah

  1270. 28, it says,

  1271. the Lord of hosts,

  1272. he is wonderful in

  1273. counsel.

1274. It's the Lord of hosts

  1275. that is called

  1276. wonderful in

  1277. counsel.

  1278. What does that say

  1279. about this boy?

  1280. But while he is

  1281. truly awe-inspiringly,

  1282. transcendently

  1283. wonderful, he is

  1284. also a near,

  1285. intimate counselor.

  1286. Someone who bends

  1287. his ear to you.

  1288. Cares for you

  1289. tenderly.

  1290. Brothers and

  1291. sisters, do you

1292. need to make a big

  1293. life decision and

  1294. you just don't know

  1295. what to do?

  1296. Do you have a

  1297. problem in a

  1298. relationship where

  1299. you just don't know

  1300. what to do?

  1301. Friend, do you

  1302. know that you have

  1303. a wonderful

  1304. counselor in Jesus

  1305. Christ?

  1306. Let not the first

1307. place you turn to be

  1308. social media or

  1309. AI or Reddit.

  1310. I'm sure many of

  1311. you have had this

  1312. experience this past

  1313. year, using AI,

  1314. being amazed by its

  1315. depths of wisdom.

  1316. Be not so easily

  1317. impressed.

  1318. Jesus has greater

  1319. wisdom.

  1320. So turn, ask the

  1321. Lord Jesus Christ,

1322. sit at his feet and

  1323. learn from him.

  1324. Study his word, for

1325. in it are the words

  1326. of life.

  1327. His words are lamps

  1328. onto our feet and

  1329. light for our paths.

  1330. Secondly, this child

  1331. will be called

  1332. mighty God.

1333. Here is one of the

  1334. most explicit

  1335. declarations in the

  1336. Old Testament that

  1337. the Messiah will

  1338. somehow be human,

  1339. but also divine and

  1340. profound mystery.

  1341. Jewish commentators

  1342. have historically

  1343. struggled to make

  1344. sense of this

  1345. passage.

  1346. For to them,

  1347. there's absolutely

  1348. no way that this

  1349. little boy could be

  1350. called mighty God.

  1351. That would be an

  1352. act of blasphemy

  1353. deserving of death.

  1354. So they resort to

  1355. saying that this title

  1356. is only metaphorical.

1357. It only refers to his

  1358. mission metaphorically,

  1359. that he's on a

  1360. godlike mission, or

  1361. metaphorically about his

  1362. character, he's a

  1363. godlike hero.

1364. But just in a chapter

  1365. later, this same title,

  1366. mighty God, El

  1367. Gabor, is used

  1368. clearly to refer to

  1369. Yahweh.

1370. If it clearly refers to

  1371. God there, just a

  1372. chapter later, we are

  1373. hard pressed to keep

  1374. the same meaning here.

  1375. And so what a

  1376. glorious mystery that we

  1377. celebrate this Christmas.

  1378. How could a brittle

  1379. babe be the

  1380. omnipotent God?

  1381. How could a cradle

  1382. contain the

  1383. omnipresent Lord?

  1384. How can a kid

  1385. growing in wisdom

  1386. and stature be the

  1387. omniscient God?

  1388. This is the profound

  1389. mystery of Christmas,

  1390. and this is the

  1391. scandal of Christmas.

  1392. Christmas.

  1393. Recently, I read a

  1394. news article that

  1395. follows the Los

  1396. Angeles Police

  1397. Department and their

  1398. work in stopping

  1399. prostitution on the

  1400. blade, which is a

  1401. roughly 50-block

  1402. stretch that has

  1403. become one of the

  1404. most notorious sex

  1405. trafficking corridors

  1406. in all the United

  1407. States.

  1408. This area is an

  1409. embodiment of the

  1410. darkness of the

  1411. world.

  1412. world.

  1413. The lives of these

  1414. girls are gut-wrenchingly

  1415. tragic.

  1416. Terrible upbringings

  1417. lead to terrible

  1418. decisions, lead to

  1419. terrible lives.

  1420. And once they get

  1421. there, it is so

  1422. hard to break them

  1423. free.

  1424. In fear of

  1425. punishment, these

  1426. girls again and

  1427. again flee from the

  1428. people that are

  1429. trying to help

  1430. them straight into

  1431. the arms of the

  1432. people that are

  1433. trying to exploit

  1434. them.

  1435. One way that the

  1436. police try to catch

  1437. these traffickers is

  1438. by going undercover

  1439. in sting operations.

  1440. So, dressed as

  1441. these women, female

  1442. police officers walk

  1443. the streets of the

  1444. blade.

  1445. Can you imagine the

  1446. condescension?

  1447. humiliation.

  1448. The humiliation.

  1449. Not only that, but

  1450. the danger.

  1451. One pimp attacked

  1452. and knocked an

  1453. officer to the

  1454. ground once she was

  1455. caught as police.

  1456. Because of that, she

  1457. was permanently

  1458. injured.

  1459. Her life never the

  1460. same.

  1461. These trained,

  1462. educated, honorable

  1463. women subject

  1464. themselves to the

  1465. humiliation to the

  1466. danger to save these

  1467. girls from their

  1468. oppressors.

  1469. And of course,

  1470. analogies fail when

  1471. you press them too

  1472. much, but this

  1473. captures just a

  1474. fraction of the

  1475. great condescension

  1476. of Jesus Christ.

  1477. He is God.

  1478. He is Lord of

  1479. Lords, creator of

  1480. all things, and yet

  1481. he took on flesh.

  1482. And like these

  1483. police officers, he

  1484. entered into a

  1485. broken, dark

  1486. world to save

  1487. us.

  1488. Not just the

  1489. humiliation, but he

  1490. knew the danger that

  1491. was ahead of him.

  1492. But this mighty

  1493. God, El Gabor, was

  1494. undeterred to come

1495. as a babe to save

  1496. us from our

  1497. oppressors, to

  1498. release us from our

  1499. bondage to sin and

  1500. death.

  1501. Praise be to the

  1502. Lord Jesus.

  1503. Jesus.

  1504. Though unto us a

  1505. child is given, the

  1506. third title is

  1507. paradoxically everlasting

  1508. father.

  1509. He's a child called

  1510. a father.

  1511. Now some of you

  1512. might be wondering if

  1513. Isaiah is calling

  1514. God the son, God

  1515. the father here.

  1516. Is Isaiah guilty of

  1517. mixing up the

  1518. persons of the

  1519. trinity and committing

  1520. theological

  1521. heresy.

1522. I think this is where

  1523. context really is

  1524. key.

  1525. Isaiah isn't teaching

  1526. heresy here because

  1527. we have to remember

  1528. that in the Old

  1529. Testament, the

  1530. prophets wrote in a

  1531. time not where they

  1532. had a developed

  1533. understanding of the

  1534. trinity.

1535. It wasn't just part of

  1536. their daily thinking.

  1537. That Trinitarian

  1538. doctrine took time for

  1539. the church to define

  1540. and refine.

1541. And so we need to be

1542. careful not to read a

  1543. New Testament concern

  1544. into an Old Testament

  1545. passage.

  1546. What then does this

  1547. title mean?

  1548. Back then the title

1549. father was a title of

  1550. political authority and

  1551. of power.

  1552. For example, kings would

  1553. call themselves fathers

  1554. of their nations.

  1555. Recall how Ahaz, the

  1556. king of Judah, he

  1557. covenanted with Assyria.

1558. It was clear that Assyria

  1559. was the more dominant

1560. power and so Ahaz submits

  1561. himself to him.

1562. And he says that the

1563. king of Assyria would be

  1564. his master and father

1565. and that he would be to

1566. him a servant and son.

1567. Ahaz declared his fealty to

1568. the wrong father when he

  1569. should have placed his

  1570. trust in this everlasting

  1571. father.

1572. And so this title challenges

1573. us to trust in no power but

1574. the power of Jesus Christ

  1575. alone.

1576. So the simple question is

  1577. who do you trust?

1578. Do you know that as Psalm

  1579. 23 says that he prepares a

1580. table before you in the

  1581. presence of your enemies?

1582. If a king invited you to be an

1583. honored guest for dinner, you

1584. were pampered with care and

  1585. attention and more importantly

1586. you were under his protection.

1587. Even if you were seated around

  1588. your greatest mortal enemies,

1589. people who wanted your very

1590. head, no one could lay a

  1591. finger on you.

1592. That is the kind of honor and

1593. protection that you child of

  1594. God receive.

1595. So when you are afraid of all

1596. the threats around you, there

1597. is no need to rely on anything,

1598. anyone else, no sources of

  1599. strength.

1600. But declare like David in

  1601. Psalm 53, when I am afraid, I

1602. put my trust in you.

1603. In God whose word I praise, in

1604. God I trust and am not afraid.

1605. What can mere mortals do to

  1606. me?

1607. In the midst of trial, do you

1608. have this kind of simple faith in

  1609. the Lord?

1610. And if you do, you will never

  1611. regret that trust.

1612. For this Father's rule and

  1613. reign will be everlasting.

1614. Of the increase of his

1615. government and of peace, there

  1616. will be no end.

1617. We know the adage, absolute

  1618. power corrupts absolutely.

1619. We see that time and time again.

1620. That kind of power is like a

  1621. mirror.

1622. If a man can do whatever he

1623. wants, whenever he wants, you

1624. can't imagine what kind of

  1625. ugliness, selfishness, perversion

1626. comes out of that man's heart.

1627. You can't imagine what kind of

1628. selfishness and evil would come out

  1629. of your heart.

1630. But unlike you and me, when Jesus

1631. forever sits on the throne of

1632. David with all power and all

1633. authority, he rules with justice,

  1634. with righteousness.

1635. Unlike the tyrants of men, when he

1636. rules, not evil but peace, shalom,

1637. they overflow to his subjects.

1638. Not just to the Jews only.

1639. For Jesus came not to be the

  1640. conquering, revolutionary Messiah that

1641. the Jews were waiting for.

1642. No, it is too small a thing for this

1643. kind of king to rule only one

  1644. nation.

1645. For he came not to establish an

1646. earthly kingdom, but a heavenly

1647. kingdom like the world has never seen

  1648. before.

1649. In which not just the blood

1650. descendants of Abraham will come,

1651. but the spiritual whole of God's

1652. people from every tribe, nation,

1653. and tongue, they will come to

1654. worship the name of the Lord Jesus

  1655. Christ.

1656. And they will live in peace forever.

1657. That's exactly why Jesus' fourth and

1658. final title is Prince of Peace.

1659. All of his subjects can confidently,

1660. permanently say, the Lord is my

  1661. shepherd.

  1662. I shall not want.

1663. He makes me lie down in green

  1664. pastures.

1665. He leads me beside still waters.

  1666. He restores my soul.

1667. In his kingdom, none of the spirit of

1668. distress, of fear, of loneliness,

  1669. embodied by that anti-Psalm 23,

  1670. is ever relatable.

1671. All of that will be completely foreign,

  1672. alien.

  1673. Alien.

1674. And that kind of peace is only

1675. possible because of the peace that he

1676. has made on behalf of sinners like you

  1677. and me.

1678. This wonderful counselor, mighty God,

1679. everlasting father, prince of peace,

1680. not only did he humble himself by

1681. permanently taking on flesh, walking

1682. this dark world, but he went as far as

  1683. he could possibly go.

1684. He gave up everything that he possibly

1685. could by dying on behalf of sinners.

1686. Isaiah would then go on to predict about

1687. this suffering servant in chapter 53.

1688. He was pierced for our transgressions.

1689. Upon him was the chastisement that brought

1690. us peace, and with his wounds we are

  1691. healed.

  1692. We were his enemies.

1693. We deserved to be banished to live in

  1694. deep darkness.

1695. I fall short of his glory every single day.

1696. But by his death that he endured,

1697. for all those who have put their faith in

1698. him, he spoke, let light shine out of the

  1699. darkness.

1700. He spoke those words at the beginning of

1701. creation, and he spoke those words into our

  1702. hearts.

1703. No longer are we in the dark, for he has

1704. delivered us from the domain of darkness and

1705. transferred us into the kingdom of our beloved

1706. son, his beloved son, in whom we have redemption, the

  1707. forgiveness of our sins.

1708. By his death, Jesus has freed us from the bondage of

1709. sin and defeated our greatest enemy, Satan, and has stopped all of his

  1710. accusations.

1711. And we stand justified before him, so we live eternally then with him

  1712. forever.

1713. This is the greatest news that we celebrate this Christmas.

1714. And no, this prophecy hasn't yet been fulfilled completely, fully yet.

1715. There are things in this prophecy that Jesus hasn't yet fulfilled at the

  1716. first coming.

1717. Advent derived from the Latin means coming or arrival.

1718. The first advent of Jesus then makes us wait eagerly for the second advent.

1719. So yes, today, we are not as we should be.

1720. Yet we know by faith we are not as we will be.

1721. One day when Jesus returns with the clouds,

1722. with his holy angels, and that one day is coming soon.

1723. The government will be upon his shoulders from that time forth and

  1724. forevermore.

1725. The son of David will take his rightful place on the throne, and he will rule

1726. with justice and righteousness, and we will be co-heirs with Christ.

1727. How can we be so sure?

  1728. We know.

1729. We know the character of our God.

1730. We know that the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

1731. The Lord is not begrudging or indifferent to do this,

1732. but he is intensely, fervently zealous to do this very work,

1733. to glorify his name by delivering his people into an everlasting kingdom.

1734. So brothers and sisters, the sun rose today.

1735. The sun will rise again.

1736. The sun came 2,000 years ago.

1737. The sun will come again.

1738. When he does, he will give light to those who sit in darkness

1739. and the shadow of death to guide our feet into the way of peace.

  1740. And so we sing.

  1741. Oh, holy night.

1742. The stars are brightly shining.

1743. It is the night of our dear Savior's birth.

1744. Long lay the world in sin and error pining

1745. till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.

  1746. A thrill of hope.

  1747. The weary world rejoices.

1748. For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

  1749. Let's pray.

1750. Father, we thank you that you are a God

  1751. that doesn't abandon a darkened people,

  1752. a depressed people, a lost people.

1753. But you have pursued us.

1754. You have given up everything possible

1755. so that we may come into the light.

1756. Help us to live in the light.

  1757. Rejoice in the light.

1758. Sing and dance in the light.

1759. And know that our future

1760. is eternal light with you.

1761. In a place where there will be no need of a sun.

1762. No need of a moon.

1763. For your glory will illuminate all.

1764. We look forward to that time.

  1765. Maranatha, Lord Jesus,

  1766. come soon.

1767. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1768. Amen.
