  1. If you'd open up your Bibles, please, to Matthew chapter 15.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  2. Matthew 15, we are in verses 21 to 39 this morning.

  3. ! Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  4. Heavenly Father,

  5. you are God and we are not.

  6. You are the creator and we are your creatures.

  7. So Lord, it is right for us to humble ourselves before you,

  8. to be addressed by you in your word.

  9. Give us ears to hear.

  10. Father, help us to take hold of the truths of your word with faith.

  11. Grant us the humility and the poverty of spirit that you seek from all of us.

  12. As we're reminded through this passage of your wonderful grace and kindness toward us in Jesus Christ.

  13. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

  14. If you are able, please stand for the reading of God's word.

  15. Let's honor God together by standing together as I read from Matthew 15, verse 21 to 39.

    Matthew 15:21–39

  16. And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.

  17. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying,

  18. Have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David.

  19. My daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.

  20. But he did not answer her a word.

  21. And his disciples came and begged him, saying,

  22. Send her away, for she is crying out after us.

  23. He answered,

  24. I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

  25. But she came and knelt before him, saying,

  26. Lord, help me.

  27. And he answered,

  28. It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.

  29. She said,

  30. Yes, Lord.

  31. Yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table.

  32. Then Jesus answered her,

  33. O woman, great is your faith.

  34. Be it done for you as you desire.

  35. And her daughter was healed instantly.

  36. Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee.

  37. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there.

  38. And great crowds came to him, bringing with him the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others.

  39. And they put them at his feet, and he healed them.

  40. So that the crowd wondered when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing.

  41. And they glorified the God of Israel.

  42. Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said,

  43. I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat.

  44. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry lest they faint on the way.

  45. And the disciples said to him,

  46. Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?

  47. And Jesus said to them,

  48. How many loaves do you have?

  49. They said,

  50. Seven,

  51. And a few small fish.

  52. And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground,

  53. he took the seven loaves and the fish.

  54. And having given thanks,

  55. he broke them and gave them to the disciples.

  56. And the disciples gave them to the crowds.

  57. And they all ate and were satisfied.

  58. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over.

  59. Those who ate were 4,000 men, besides women and children.

  60. And after sending away the crowds,

  61. he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.

  62. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  63. Please be seated.

  64. The Jew-Gentile hostility is one of the oldest documented ethnic tensions and conflicts in world history.

  65. Historian Robert S. Wistrich,

  66. who was the foremost scholarly authority on anti-Semitism in the 20th century,

  67. called anti-Semitism or hatred of Jews,

  68. the longest hatred because of its deep historical roots and longevity.

  69. This is partly due to Jewish exclusivity.

  70. They claim unique chosen status as the people of God.

  71. And for that reason,

  72. they have sought to maintain a distinct identity apart from the rest of the world.

  73. And Jews who strictly adhere to Old Testament law

  74. often separate themselves from secular society as well.

  75. This exclusive distinct identity creates a strong sense of internal cohesion,

  76. which makes them stick together and help each other.

  77. And that strong internal cohesion often means alienation from those who are outside of that group,

  78. which could create mistrust and suspicion.

  79. This in turn creates persecution and minority survival pressure,

  80. which then reinforces that strong sense of internal cohesion.

  81. And it goes on and on.

  82. Statesmen throughout the ages have repeatedly tried to forge peace treaties

  83. and make peace between Jews and Gentiles to no avail.

  84. But our passage this morning teaches us that God himself has already provided the only solution that will work.

  85. Only solution to this long hatred and lasting divide between Jews and Gentiles.

  86. Because Jesus is the Jewish Messiah who brings salvation to the Gentiles.

  87. We're going to look at first the breadcrumbs for the dogs in verses 21 to 28.

  88. And then we'll look at bread for the Gentiles in verse 29 to 39.

  89. We saw escalating tension between Jesus and the Pharisees and scribes,

  90. the delegation that was sent from Jerusalem to investigate Jesus in the preceding passage.

  91. And because of that escalating tension, Jesus now withdraws again from the Jewish crowds.

  92. He withdraws from Jewish territory altogether this time.

  93. And he goes to the district of Tyre and Sidon,

  94. the two of the most prominent cities in the ancient Phoenician kingdom.

  95. Tyre and Sidon were notorious pagan cities,

  96. frequently denounced by the Old Testament prophets for being bitter enemies of God's people.

  97. Tyre and Sidon was a Christian.

  98. He says in Ezekiel 26, 2-3 that when Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, of Judah fell,

  99. Tyre gloated over Jerusalem saying,

  100. Aha, the gate of the peoples is broken.

  101. It has swung open to me.

  102. I shall be replenished now that she is laid waste.

  103. And therefore the Lord God declared,

  104. Behold, I am against you, O Tyre,

  105. and will bring up many nations against you as the sea brings up its waves.

  106. That gives you a glimpse of that conflict between Israel and Tyre.

  107. 1 Kings 16 records that King Ahab, an Israelite king,

  108. did more to provoke the Lord to anger than any other king before him.

  109. Why?

  110. Because he erected an altar for Baal

  111. in the house of Baal that he himself built in Israel.

  112. And why in the world did he do that?

  113. Because he took for his wife Jezebel,

  114. the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians,

  115. and went and served Baal and worshipped him.

  116. Baal was the chief god of the Syrophoenician kingdom,

  117. of Tyre and Sidon.

  118. And due to Jezebel, a Sidonian princess,

  119. her influence, Baal worship was institutionalized in Israel,

  120. and the prophets of the Lord were systematically slaughtered,

  121. so that Israel almost lost its covenantal identity before God altogether.

  122. Tyre and Sidon,

  123. therefore became bywords of unbelief and idolatry.

  124. The only other time that Tyre and Sidon are mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew

  125. is in Matthew 11, 21-22,

  126. where Jesus denounces the unbelieving cities of Israel

  127. by comparing them to Tyre and Sidon,

  128. saying,

  129. Woe to you, Chorazin!

  130. Woe to you, Bethsaida!

  131. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,

  132. they would have repented long ago and sat cloth and ashes.

  133. But I tell you,

  134. it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

  135. That's how bad the unbelief of these Jewish cities were.

  136. So bad that Tyre and Sidon compare favorably to them.

  137. There were no cities in the ancient world so bad

  138. that was worse than Tyre and Sidon that Jesus could compare them to.

  139. So he compares them to Tyre and Sidon.

  140. It's to this district of Tyre and Sidon that Jesus has now retired.

  141. And what follows is hardly surprising.

  142. It says in verse 22,

  143. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out.

  144. Who else would you expect to come out of a region like that than a Canaanite?

  145. Remember, by this point,

  146. Canaan is a name that is no longer used by the people of that region.

  147. That's why in the parallel passage of this,

  148. found in Mark 7, 24-30,

  149. Mark doesn't call her a Canaanite woman.

  150. Instead, he calls her a Syrophoenician woman,

  151. which is the term that was currently in use at the time.

  152. However, Matthew chooses to retain this intentionally,

  153. this anachronistic, theologically loaded,

  154. Old Testament term, Canaanite,

  155. because he's trying to drive home a point.

  156. A Canaanite woman is the exact kind of woman

  157. that Abraham and Isaac in Genesis

  158. made their sons swear never to marry.

  159. The Canaanites were, from Israeli perspective,

  160. the squatters who occupied the promised land

  161. flowing with milk and honey that God had promised to them.

  162. The people that Israel warred against generation after generation.

  163. The stubborn people that they were supposed to drive out from the land

  164. but never fully succeeded in driving out.

  165. The very people who survived among the Israelites

  166. and led them into idolatry,

  167. which then led to their exile from their promised land.

  168. These are the inveterate enemies of the people of God.

  169. So out comes a Canaanite woman from that region.

  170. It's not surprising to meet her in Tyre and Sidon.

  171. What is surprising, however, is this woman's profession of faith.

  172. She cries out to Jesus in verse 22,

  173. Have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David.

  174. My daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.

  175. She addresses Jesus first as the son of David,

  176. which is a messianic title that Matthew accords to Jesus

  177. all throughout the gospel,

  178. saying that Jesus is God's promised anointed king,

  179. the savior who is to come from the line of David.

  180. Not only that, this woman addresses Jesus as Lord.

  181. Lord is a word that can simply mean a polite sir,

  182. referring to someone who is a social superior to you in this culture.

  183. However, in the gospel of Matthew,

  184. it's a much more theologically hefty term.

  185. Because the first time Jesus applies that term Lord to himself

  186. is in Matthew 7, 21,

  187. when he declares himself to be the final judge

  188. over all of humanity on the last day.

  189. That's Lord.

  190. And so, when she addresses Jesus as Lord,

  191. Matthew wants us to see a deeper import to that address,

  192. the implications of that acknowledgement.

  193. This Canaanite woman acknowledges Jesus' authority and power.

  194. That's why she's come to ask for help

  195. with her daughter who is severely oppressed by a demon.

  196. Literally, that means that's severely demonized.

  197. Demonized means you've come under the influence of a demon.

  198. And that influence can vary in strength.

  199. And in worst cases, like you see in the gathering demoniacs

  200. earlier in the Gospel of Matthew,

  201. you can be controlled by a demon,

  202. like a puppet is controlled by a puppeteer.

  203. That's how bad it can be when you are demonized.

  204. And in this case, by this woman's own admission,

  205. her daughter is severely demonized.

  206. So, who can help a person who is severely demonized?

  207. Only a person who possesses special, divine, spiritual authority.

  208. And this Canaanite woman recognizes that Jesus has that authority.

  209. This is why she takes great social risk

  210. to approach Jesus, a Jewish teacher.

  211. Given typical Jewish attitudes during her days,

  212. like I was mentioning earlier, toward Canaanites,

  213. she could have expected to be reviled and rebuked

  214. and driven away from Jesus' presence with verbal abuse.

  215. But because her situation is so desperate,

  216. this woman seeks out Jesus and calls out to him relentlessly,

  217. have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David.

  218. Jesus, however, completely ignores her.

  219. It says in verse 23,

  220. but he did not answer her a word.

  221. Not a word.

  222. A total silent treatment.

  223. Jesus doesn't even acknowledge her presence.

  224. I imagine he's not even looking at her.

  225. But interestingly enough,

  226. Jesus also doesn't rebuke her or silence her.

  227. And this is how we know that Jesus is not trying to be rude.

  228. He's simply playing hard to get

  229. in order to test the genuineness of her faith and her humility.

  230. Far from being discouraged by Jesus' silence,

  231. this Canaanite woman seems encouraged by Jesus' silence

  232. to keep crying out.

  233. Well, silence is better than a no.

  234. Maybe there's a chance.

  235. Perhaps he's thinking.

  236. Son of David, have mercy on me.

  237. Lord, have mercy on me.

  238. My daughter is severely demonized.

  239. She's so persistent in crying out

  240. that Jesus' disciples are annoyed and exasperated

  241. to the point of begging Jesus themselves

  242. to send her away.

  243. Send her away is a translation of a word

  244. that means to dismiss or even to divorce.

  245. The disciples are not asking Jesus

  246. to grant her her request.

  247. They're asking Jesus to deny her and dismiss her.

  248. Please, Jesus, say something to her.

  249. Since she won't stop crying out otherwise,

  250. send her away.

  251. She's hounding us and we can't handle it anymore.

  252. No.

  253. This prompts Jesus' first words

  254. to the Canaanite woman in verse 24.

  255. I was sent only to the lost sheep

  256. of the house of Israel.

  257. When Jesus sent his 12 apostles out

  258. on their preaching mission earlier in chapter 10,

  259. he similarly instructed them,

  260. go nowhere among the Gentiles

  261. and enter no town of the Samaritans,

  262. but go rather to the lost sheep

  263. of the house of Israel.

  264. This was the mission that he had given them.

  265. Because until his,

  266. after his death and resurrection,

  267. the gospel goes forth first to the Jews

  268. for salvation is from the Jews.

  269. And then it goes from the Jews

  270. to the Samaritans and to the Gentiles

  271. and to the ends of the earth,

  272. as we see in the Great Commission in Matthew 28.

  273. So Jesus is being consistent here.

  274. He appears to be listening to the disciples' request

  275. to send her away.

  276. woman,

  277. go home.

  278. I'm not going to help you.

  279. I am a Jewish Messiah.

  280. You are a Canaanite woman.

  281. My responsibility is not to you.

  282. But she is unrelenting.

  283. English author Agatha Christie once wrote,

  284. a mother's love for her child

  285. is like nothing else in the world.

  286. It knows no law,

  287. no pity.

  288. It dares all things

  289. and crushes down remorselessly

  290. all that stands in its path.

  291. Jesus' rejection

  292. only emboldens this Canaanite mom.

  293. He just spoke to me.

  294. He just spoke to me.

  295. He heard me.

  296. He acknowledged me.

  297. This is my chance.

  298. And it says in verse 25,

  299. she came and knelt before him saying,

  300. Lord, help me.

  301. She abases herself before Jesus by kneeling.

  302. Kneeling is a position of reverence,

  303. humility,

  304. submission,

  305. supplication.

  306. It's a position that makes you lower and smaller,

  307. the other person bigger and higher.

  308. It's a defenseless,

  309. surrendered position,

  310. the exact opposite of an athletic ready stance

  311. or a fighting stance.

  312. When you're kneeling on the ground,

  313. there's nothing you can do

  314. to protect yourself

  315. or defend yourself.

  316. You're completely surrendered

  317. at the mercy of someone else.

  318. This woman is not a deal maker

  319. approaching Jesus as equals,

  320. trying to shake hands

  321. and make a deal.

  322. She has not come to negotiate

  323. or bargain.

  324. She has come to beg.

  325. And beg.

  326. She does.

  327. As soon as Jesus says the first words,

  328. this woman is kneeling in front of him

  329. and begging,

  330. Lord, help me.

  331. And in Jewish custom,

  332. you beg,

  333. you kneel,

  334. come down on your knees,

  335. you prostrate yourself,

  336. you touch your head to the floor.

  337. You beg,

  338. Lord, help me.

  339. Son of David,

  340. help me.

  341. I will go even lower if I could.

  342. Please,

  343. you are the only hope for my daughter.

  344. Help me.

  345. But Jesus is not done

  346. testing this woman's faith just yet.

  347. He answers her in verse 26,

  348. it is not right

  349. to take the children's bread

  350. and throw it to the dogs.

  351. This is when all the bystanders go,

  352. ooh.

  353. Now he's done it.

  354. He just said the D word.

  355. He crossed the big,

  356. big red line.

  357. He just called this Canaanite woman

  358. and her daughter,

  359. dogs.

  360. In contrast to the Jews

  361. who are children.

  362. How rude and insensitive

  363. can he be,

  364. right?

  365. It's far worse

  366. than you and I might imagine

  367. because most dogs

  368. that we see around here

  369. in Cambridge

  370. are nice,

  371. pampered pets,

  372. right?

  373. Some Cambridge dog owners

  374. call themselves

  375. moms and dads.

  376. Sorry if you're one of those people.

  377. Stop it.

  378. Yeah.

  379. And they call themselves

  380. moms and dads

  381. and then they feed

  382. their children

  383. only 100%

  384. human grade

  385. whole foods

  386. like salmon

  387. with cucumber

  388. and spinach salad.

  389. Man,

  390. that sounds like my dinner.

  391. Or hard boiled eggs

  392. with steamed rice.

  393. I mean,

  394. eggs are expensive nowadays.

  395. I personally know someone

  396. who buys her pet poodle

  397. oodles of these

  398. donut peaches.

  399. You guys know what I'm talking about?

  400. Those flat peaches?

  401. That's the most expensive

  402. variety of peach

  403. you can buy at H Mart.

  404. I guarantee you dogs

  405. were not treated like that

  406. in the ancient world.

  407. Most dogs in those days

  408. were not pets

  409. but they were dirty scavengers,

  410. low-life animals,

  411. and even the house dogs

  412. like the kind mentioned here

  413. would only ever eat

  414. the scraps

  415. and the throwaway foods.

  416. Not only that,

  417. according to Leviticus 11.27,

  418. animals that go on all fours

  419. and walk on their paws

  420. are considered

  421. ritually unclean.

  422. So while animals

  423. with cloven hoofs

  424. like sheep and goats

  425. were considered clean

  426. and fit for Jewish consumption,

  427. dogs,

  428. because they walk

  429. on all fours

  430. but don't have cloven hooves,

  431. have paws instead,

  432. were considered unclean.

  433. And it's for that reason

  434. specifically

  435. that Jews of Jesus' day

  436. sometimes refer to Gentiles

  437. in a derogatory manner

  438. as dogs.

  439. Oh, look at those dogs.

  440. It was their way

  441. of saying that they're unclean,

  442. unholy,

  443. unchosen people.

  444. It's almost like

  445. an ethnic slur.

  446. So with all that

  447. cultural background in mind,

  448. imagine yourself

  449. in this Canaanite woman's shoes.

  450. You've already abased yourself

  451. and humbled yourself

  452. to such a degree

  453. you've come down

  454. on your knees

  455. to beg for help

  456. from this Jewish teacher

  457. and he calls you,

  458. not just you,

  459. but her daughter too,

  460. dogs.

  461. How would you respond to that?

  462. Who do you think you are?

  463. Who are you calling dogs?

  464. Do you know how I make a living

  465. in this world?

  466. You know how hard I work

  467. to take care of my daughter?

  468. You arrogant,

  469. chauvinistic,

  470. racist.

  471. You're holier than thou.

  472. Keep your bread for yourself.

  473. I'm out of here.

  474. I think that's how

  475. most people respond.

  476. But this Canaanite woman

  477. keeps surprising us.

  478. She says in verse 27,

  479. Yes.

  480. Yes, Lord.

  481. This is one of my favorite

  482. characters in the Gospels.

  483. Yes, Lord.

  484. Yet even the dogs

  485. eat the crumbs

  486. that fall from their

  487. master's table.

  488. Yes, Lord.

  489. You are the master.

  490. They are the children.

  491. Yes, Lord.

  492. I'm just a dog.

  493. A Gentile,

  494. unclean dog.

  495. You are right,

  496. master.

  497. But do not

  498. even the dogs

  499. get to eat the crumbs

  500. that fall from

  501. their master's table.

  502. How much lower

  503. can she go?

  504. And so Jesus

  505. commends her

  506. in verse 28.

  507. It's the moment

  508. he's been waiting for.

  509. Oh, woman,

  510. great is your faith.

  511. Let it be done

  512. for you

  513. as you desire.

  514. The Canaanite woman's

  515. great faith

  516. leads to a great miracle

  517. from Jesus.

  518. It says her daughter

  519. was healed instantly.

  520. There are many

  521. striking perils

  522. between this account

  523. of the healing

  524. of this woman's

  525. demonized daughter,

  526. Canaanite woman's

  527. demonized daughter,

  528. and the healing

  529. of the centurion,

  530. the Gentile centurion's

  531. servant early

  532. in Matthew chapter 8.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  533. They both deal

  534. with Gentiles.

  535. In both cases,

  536. the one who comes

  537. to beg and to plead

  538. with Jesus

  539. is not the one

  540. who needs help.

  541. They ask on behalf

  542. of another.

  543. And in both cases,

  544. they are commended

  545. for an extraordinary

  546. faith that exceeds

  547. the faith of their

  548. Jewish peers.

  549. And in both situations,

  550. Jesus heals them

  551. with a word

  552. instantly,

  553. remotely.

  554. Not by going there

  555. and laying hands on them,

  556. which he does

  557. in normal circumstances,

  558. but from a distance.

  559. He just says the word

  560. and they are healed.

  561. And these are the only

  562. two examples of healing

  563. that happens like that

  564. in the entire

  565. Gospel of Matthew.

  566. Amazing miracle.

  567. And how can it be

  568. that only these two

  569. Gentiles in the entire

  570. Gospel are commended

  571. for extraordinary faith?

  572. This is the only person

  573. in the entire Gospel

  574. who is commended

  575. for having great faith.

  576. It's because

  577. of that great faith

  578. of seeing

  579. that God is who

  580. he really says he is.

  581. And Jesus is who

  582. he really says he is

  583. that enables

  584. this Canaanite woman

  585. to humble herself

  586. in this way

  587. before God.

  588. If you read this story

  589. and you can't get over

  590. how rude

  591. and insensitive

  592. Jesus

  593. and ethnocentric

  594. Jesus seems to be

  595. then you don't quite

  596. yet see God

  597. in all of his glory

  598. and sovereignty.

  599. You don't yet see

  600. his son

  601. in all of his glory

  602. and majesty.

  603. Jesus said

  604. that he came

  605. as a shepherd

  606. to the lost sheep

  607. of the house of Israel.

  608. If you go to Isaiah 40

  609. it describes God

  610. as a shepherd

  611. who tends

  612. to his flock

  613. and who gathers

  614. the lamb in his arms.

  615. And this is the greatness

  616. of the God

  617. the shepherd

  618. that Isaiah 40 described.

  619. It says

  620. that he has measured

  621. the waters

  622. in the hollow of his hand

  623. and marked up the heavens

  624. with the span

  625. and enclosed the dust

  626. of the earth

  627. in a measure

  628. and weighed the mountains

  629. in scales.

  630. Let's digress with me

  631. for just a minute

  632. and think about this.

  633. Imagine this.

  634. This is what God is like.

  635. 321 million cubic miles

  636. of ocean water.

  637. It says God measures it

  638. in the hollow of his hand.

  639. The observable heavenly skies

  640. the space

  641. 93 billion light years

  642. in diameter.

  643. God marks it off

  644. with the span of his hand.

  645. All the immovable mountains

  646. of the earth

  647. the Andes

  648. Himalayas

  649. the Rocky Mountains

  650. the Appalachian Mountains

  651. God weighs them

  652. on his scales.

  653. It continues

  654. Isaiah 40

  655. the nations

  656. are like a drop

  657. from a bucket

  658. and are accounted

  659. as the dust

  660. on the scales.

  661. all the nations

  662. are as nothing

  663. before Him.

  664. They are accounted

  665. by Him

  666. as less than nothing

  667. and emptiness.

  668. All the nations

  669. of the earth

  670. are like God says

  671. drop from a bucket.

  672. That's how small

  673. they are.

  674. If all the nations

  675. are like that

  676. then how small

  677. is one

  678. Canaanite

  679. woman?

  680. That's how puny

  681. we are compared

  682. to God.

  683. God can choose

  684. to do

  685. whatever He wants

  686. to whomever

  687. He wants.

  688. He is sovereign

  689. He is the potter

  690. and we are the clay.

  691. And that's not

  692. even considering

  693. our sin

  694. and rebellion

  695. against Him.

  696. God is our creator

  697. but rather than

  698. worshiping our creator

  699. as we ought to

  700. as creatures

  701. we have worshipped

  702. our fellow creatures

  703. the created things.

  704. in fact we have

  705. fashioned for ourselves

  706. with our own hands

  707. and with our own

  708. imaginations

  709. so called God's

  710. idols

  711. for ourselves

  712. that we worship.

  713. God is our

  714. just and wise

  715. king

  716. who has ruled

  717. over us

  718. with nothing

  719. but kindness

  720. and benevolence

  721. but we have been

  722. traitors to His kingdom.

  723. We have sought

  724. to overthrow Him

  725. and usurp

  726. His throne

  727. for ourselves.

  728. We have allied

  729. ourselves with

  730. the enemies of God

  731. because we want

  732. to be kings

  733. and rulers

  734. of our own lives.

  735. God is our

  736. heavenly Father

  737. to whom we owe

  738. our very existence.

  739. He provides

  740. for all our needs.

  741. He makes the sun

  742. rise and set.

  743. He sends rain

  744. in its season

  745. but we are

  746. disobedient

  747. unfilial

  748. ungrateful children

  749. who have disowned

  750. their own father.

  751. God is our

  752. betrothed

  753. covenant partner

  754. but we have been

  755. like an unfaithful

  756. bride,

  757. a prostitute

  758. that whores

  759. after other lovers,

  760. other gods.

  761. All of our

  762. righteous deeds

  763. and good works

  764. that we do

  765. are woefully

  766. inadequate

  767. to make any

  768. of that up

  769. and yet

  770. do we have

  771. the bare faced

  772. audacity

  773. to feel

  774. entitled

  775. before God.

  776. God

  777. to approach

  778. God

  779. and make

  780. demands.

  781. Are we

  782. really right

  783. to think

  784. oh poor

  785. Canaanite woman

  786. she hasn't done

  787. anything wrong?

  788. Absolutely not.

  789. She deserves

  790. far worse

  791. than the treatment

  792. that she receives.

  793. We deserve

  794. far worse

  795. than the treatment

  796. that she receives.

  797. what we really

  798. deserve

  799. is condemnation

  800. and damnation

  801. eternal

  802. separation

  803. from God

  804. and the

  805. unquenchable

  806. fires of

  807. divine judgment

  808. in hell.

  809. That is

  810. what every

  811. single human

  812. being in the

  813. world deserves

  814. apart from

  815. Christ.

  816. And that's

  817. the amazing

  818. thing about

  819. this woman's

  820. faith.

  821. This

  822. Canaanite

  823. woman

  824. gets that.

  825. Understands

  826. that.

  827. She

  828. knows

  829. as a

  830. Canaanite

  831. woman

  832. from Tyre

  833. and Sidon

  834. that she

  835. has no

  836. claim

  837. upon the

  838. ministry

  839. of this

  840. Jewish

  841. Messiah.

  842. Her

  843. people have

  844. opposed

  845. Israel

  846. have

  847. oppressed

  848. the people

  849. of God.

  850. She has

  851. no rights

  852. or entitlements

  853. that she

  854. can cling

  855. to.

  856. She knows

  857. that.

  858. She's

  859. in no

  860. position

  861. to bargain

  862. so she

  863. does the

  864. only sensible

  865. thing that

  866. a person

  867. in her

  868. position

  869. can do

  870. which is

  871. to

  872. collapse

  873. onto her

  874. knees

  875. and beg.

  876. And that's

  877. the reality

  878. not only

  879. for a

  880. Canaanite

  881. woman

  882. but for

  883. all of

  884. humanity.

  885. I can

  886. add here

  887. that even

  888. Jews

  889. have no

  890. sense

  891. cannot have

  892. any sense

  893. of right

  894. or entitlement

  895. before God

  896. at this

  897. point.

  898. Yes they

  899. are the

  900. covenant

  901. people of

  902. God

  903. who have

  904. received

  905. the promises

  906. of God

  907. but they

  908. have

  909. forsaken

  910. their covenant

  911. with God

  912. by their

  913. idolatry.

  914. That's why

  915. they are now

  916. a subjugated

  917. and conquered

  918. people here

  919. at this time

  920. under the

  921. Romans.

  922. They have

  923. broken the

  924. laws of

  925. God.

  926. How can

  927. they possibly

  928. expect God

  929. to fulfill

  930. his covenant

  931. obligations

  932. when they

  933. have not

  934. fulfilled

  935. theirs?

  936. all of

  937. us are

  938. debtors

  939. and beggars

  940. and when

  941. we

  942. recognize

  943. this

  944. precious

  945. truth

  946. we

  947. stop

  948. clapping

  949. back at

  950. God.

  951. We

  952. stop

  953. talking

  954. back

  955. at

  956. God.

  957. We

  958. lay our

  959. hands on

  960. our mouths

  961. like Job

  962. does and

  963. we repent

  964. in dust

  965. and ashes.

  966. the

  967. recognition

  968. of this

  969. spiritual

  970. reality

  971. is what

  972. Jesus

  973. calls

  974. in

  975. Matthew

  976. 5

  977. 3

  978. in

  979. the

  980. first

  981. beatitude

  982. the

  983. poverty

  984. of

  985. spirit

  986. and

  987. poverty

  988. of

  989. spirit

  990. is

  991. essential

  992. for

  993. salvation.

  994. I've

  995. been

  996. praying

  997. for you

  998. this

  999. past

  1000. week

  1001. that

  1002. God

  1003. would

  1004. grant

  1005. you

  1006. abject

  1007. poverty

  1008. of

  1009. spirit

  1010. a

  1011. total

  1012. poverty

  1013. of

  1014. spirit

  1015. to

  1016. see

  1017. that

  1018. God

  1019. owes

  1020. us

  1021. nothing

  1022. and

  1023. that

  1024. we

  1025. owe

  1026. him

  1027. everything

  1028. to

  1029. know

  1030. that

  1031. God

  1032. holds

  1033. all

  1034. the

  1035. cards

  1036. we

  1037. hold

  1038. no

  1039. card

  1040. to

  1041. see

  1042. that

  1043. God

  1044. is

  1045. completely

  1046. in

  1047. the

  1048. right

  1049. and

  1050. we

  1051. are

  1052. completely

  1053. in

  1054. the

  1055. wrong

  1056. and

  1057. yet

  1058. and

  1059. yet

  1060. God

  1061. loves

  1062. us

  1063. undeserving

  1064. sinners

  1065. and

  1066. shows

  1067. us

  1068. mercy

  1069. in

  1070. Jesus

  1071. Christ

  1072. that's

  1073. the

  1074. blessing

  1075. of

  1076. poverty

  1077. of

  1078. spirit

  1079. is

  1080. it

  1081. makes

  1082. the

  1083. grace

  1084. and

  1085. mercy

  1086. of

  1087. God

  1088. sweet

  1089. and

  1090. when

  1091. you

  1092. have

  1093. that

  1094. poverty

  1095. of

  1096. spirit

  1097. you

  1098. cannot

  1099. grumble

  1100. long

  1101. in

  1102. life

  1103. you

  1104. overflow

  1105. !

  1106. with

  1107. gratitude

  1108. Praise!

  1109. And

  1110. that's

  1111. why

  1112. Jesus

  1113. commends

  1114. this

  1115. Canaanite

  1116. woman

  1117. as having

  1118. great

  1119. faith

  1120. of

  1121. course

  1122. Jesus

  1123. knew

  1124. all

  1125. along

  1126. that

  1127. this

  1128. is

  1129. what

  1130. he

  1131. was

  1132. headed

  1133. to

  1134. he

  1135. was

  1136. simply

  1137. testing

  1138. her

  1139. and

  1140. providing

  1141. her

  1142. an

  1143. opportunity

  1144. to

  1145. demonstrate

  1146. her

  1147. faith

  1148. so

  1149. that

  1150. all

  1151. those

  1152. who

  1153. come

  1154. after

  1155. her

  1156. like

  1157. us

  1158. might

  1159. follow

  1160. her

  1161. example

  1162. how

  1163. do

  1164. we

  1165. know

  1166. that

  1167. because

  1168. we've

  1169. seen

  1170. signs

  1171. all

  1172. along

  1173. throughout

  1174. Jesus

  1175. ministry

  1176. up to

  1177. this

  1178. point

  1179. that

  1180. his

  1181. ministry

  1182. and

  1183. his

  1184. blessings

  1185. will

  1186. eventually

  1187. encompass

  1188. all of

  1189. the

  1190. Gentiles

  1191. in

  1192. chapter

  1193. 8

  1194. Jesus

  1195. already

  1196. ministered

  1197. to

  1198. some

  1199. Gentiles

  1200. the

  1201. Gentile

  1202. centurion

  1203. like

  1204. I

  1205. mentioned

  1206. earlier

  1207. the

  1208. gather

  1209. and

  1210. demoniac

  1211. so

  1212. it's

  1213. not

  1214. true

  1215. that

  1216. Jesus

  1217. never

  1218. ministered

  1219. to

  1220. the

  1221. Gentiles

  1222. also

  1223. we

  1224. saw

  1225. in

  1226. Jesus

  1227. genealogy

  1228. in

  1229. chapter

  1230. 1

  1231. that

  1232. Matthew

  1233. intentionally

  1234. mentioned

  1235. four

  1236. women

  1237. Tamar

  1238. Rahab

  1239. Ruth

  1240. Bathsheba

  1241. all

  1242. of them

  1243. Canaanite

  1244. woman

  1245. pagan

  1246. woman

  1247. in

  1248. the

  1249. genealogy

  1250. of the

  1251. Jewish

  1252. Messiah

  1253. and

  1254. then

  1255. Jesus

  1256. was

  1257. visited

  1258. and

  1259. worshipped

  1260. by

  1261. Gentile

  1262. magi

  1263. in

  1264. chapter

  1265. 2

  1266. and

  1267. decisively

  1268. in

  1269. the

  1270. immediately

  1271. preceding

  1272. passage

  1273. that I

  1274. preached

  1275. on

  1276. last

  1277. week

  1278. Jesus

  1279. abolished

  1280. the

  1281. clean

  1282. and

  1283. unclean

  1284. distinction

  1285. between

  1286. foods

  1287. clean

  1288. foods

  1289. and

  1290. unclean

  1291. food

  1292. he

  1293. abolished

  1294. that

  1295. distinction

  1296. and

  1297. in

  1298. doing

  1299. so

  1300. he

  1301. also

  1302. challenged

  1303. the

  1304. very

  1305. basis

  1306. for

  1307. the

  1308. Jewish

  1309. Gentile

  1310. distinction

  1311. clean

  1312. people

  1313. unclean

  1314. people

  1315. and

  1316. it

  1317. is

  1318. no

  1319. accident

  1320. that

  1321. right

  1322. after

  1323. he

  1324. is

  1325. teaching

  1326. in

  1327. his

  1328. declaration

  1329. that

  1330. there

  1331. is

  1332. no

  1333. such

  1334. thing

  1335. as

  1336. outside

  1337. external

  1338. things

  1339. that

  1340. make

  1341. people

  1342. unclean

  1343. that

  1344. he

  1345. goes

  1346. straight

  1347. to

  1348. the

  1349. district

  1350. of

  1351. Tyre

  1352. and

  1353. Sidon

  1354. to

  1355. minister

  1356. to

  1357. !

  1358. Jesus

  1359. knows

  1360. Jesus

  1361. knows

  1362. full

  1363. well

  1364. that

  1365. after

  1366. his

  1367. death

  1368. and

  1369. resurrection

  1370. that

  1371. he

  1372. will

  1373. call

  1374. all

  1375. Gentiles

  1376. to

  1377. himself

  1378. that

  1379. he

  1380. will

  1381. send

  1382. his

  1383. disciples

  1384. to go

  1385. and

  1386. make

  1387. disciples

  1388. of

  1389. all

  1390. nations

  1391. so

  1392. Jesus

  1393. is

  1394. acting

  1395. here

  1396. like

  1397. a

  1398. good

  1399. teacher

  1400. who

  1401. sometimes

  1402. plays

  1403. the role

  1404. of skeptic

  1405. and

  1406. challenges

  1407. the

  1408. assumptions

  1409. of

  1410. his

  1411. students

  1412. and

  1413. ask

  1414. probing

  1415. questions

  1416. not

  1417. to

  1418. tear

  1419. them

  1420. down

  1421. but

  1422. to

  1423. draw

  1424. out

  1425. from

  1426. them

  1427. deeper

  1428. insight

  1429. and

  1430. stronger

  1431. conclusions

  1432. just

  1433. as a

  1434. precious

  1435. diamond

  1436. can only

  1437. form

  1438. under

  1439. intense

  1440. 1300

  1441. degrees

  1442. Celsius

  1443. heat

  1444. and

  1445. millions

  1446. of

  1447. pounds

  1448. of

  1449. force

  1450. per

  1451. square

  1452. foot

  1453. it's

  1454. the

  1455. intense

  1456. pressure

  1457. of

  1458. Jesus

  1459. testing

  1460. that

  1461. brings

  1462. out

  1463. this

  1464. precious

  1465. jewel

  1466. of

  1467. the

  1468. Canaanite

  1469. woman's

  1470. faith

  1471. if

  1472. you're

  1473. here

  1474. this

  1475. morning

  1476. and

  1477. you

  1478. are

  1479. not

  1480. yet

  1481. a

  1482. Christian

  1483. let

  1484. me

  1485. ask

  1486. you

  1487. do

  1488. you

  1489. feel

  1490. like

  1491. you

  1492. deserve

  1493. God's

  1494. love

  1495. do

  1496. you

  1497. feel

  1498. that

  1499. you

  1500. have

  1501. earned

  1502. the

  1503. right

  1504. to

  1505. heaven

  1506. if

  1507. when

  1508. Jesus

  1509. says

  1510. it

  1511. is

  1512. not

  1513. right

  1514. to

  1515. take

  1516. the

  1517. children's

  1518. bread

  1519. and

  1520. throw

  1521. it

  1522. to

  1523. the

  1524. dogs

  1525. your

  1526. response

  1527. is

  1528. I'm

  1529. not

  1530. a

  1531. dog

  1532. I'm

  1533. a

  1534. good

  1535. person

  1536. I

  1537. deserve

  1538. a

  1539. seat

  1540. at

  1541. that

  1542. table

  1543. then

  1544. you've

  1545. got it

  1546. all

  1547. wrong

  1548. you

  1549. cannot

  1550. be

  1551. saved

  1552. that

  1553. way

  1554. poverty

  1555. of

  1556. spirit

  1557. humility

  1558. which

  1559. comes

  1560. from

  1561. faith

  1562. acknowledging

  1563. that you

  1564. come

  1565. empty

  1566. handed

  1567. before

  1568. God

  1569. bringing

  1570. nothing

  1571. to the

  1572. table

  1573. is

  1574. a

  1575. requisite

  1576. condition

  1577. for

  1578. your

  1579. salvation

  1580. but

  1581. perhaps

  1582. some

  1583. others

  1584. of you

  1585. here

  1586. this

  1587. morning

  1588. feel

  1589. deeply

  1590. unworthy

  1591. already

  1592. you feel

  1593. keenly

  1594. your

  1595. guilt

  1596. and

  1597. shame

  1598. you feel

  1599. that God

  1600. could never

  1601. forgive you

  1602. for your

  1603. sin

  1604. or accept

  1605. someone

  1606. like you

  1607. if that's

  1608. you

  1609. think

  1610. again

  1611. say

  1612. like this

  1613. Canaanite

  1614. woman

  1615. yes

  1616. Lord

  1617. yes

  1618. Lord

  1619. it's

  1620. true

  1621. that's

  1622. me

  1623. yet

  1624. even

  1625. the

  1626. dogs

  1627. eat

  1628. the

  1629. crumbs

  1630. that

  1631. fall

  1632. from

  1633. their

  1634. master's

  1635. table

  1636. whether

  1637. you

  1638. were

  1639. an

  1640. idolatrous

  1641. Canaanite

  1642. who

  1643. seduced

  1644. and killed

  1645. the Jews

  1646. whether

  1647. you

  1648. were

  1649. a

  1650. Nazi

  1651. German

  1652. who

  1653. massacred

  1654. Jews

  1655. in

  1656. concentration

  1657. camps

  1658. or a

  1659. Hamas

  1660. militant

  1661. who

  1662. was

  1663. raped

  1664. and killed

  1665. Jews

  1666. or whether

  1667. you're

  1668. a

  1669. murderer

  1670. or an

  1671. adulterer

  1672. or a

  1673. liar

  1674. or a

  1675. cheater

  1676. whatever

  1677. you have

  1678. done

  1679. wherever

  1680. you have

  1681. come

  1682. from

  1683. if you

  1684. acknowledge

  1685. your own

  1686. sinfulness

  1687. your own

  1688. spiritual

  1689. poverty

  1690. before God

  1691. your own

  1692. moral

  1693. bankruptcy

  1694. before God

  1695. and you

  1696. come

  1697. trusting

  1698. in Jesus

  1699. who died

  1700. for the

  1701. sins

  1702. of his

  1703. people

  1704. that he

  1705. died

  1706. on the

  1707. cross

  1708. and was

  1709. raised

  1710. from the

  1711. dead

  1712. for

  1713. your

  1714. sake

  1715. then you

  1716. too

  1717. can come

  1718. to the

  1719. table

  1720. Jesus

  1721. said

  1722. earlier in

  1723. Matthew

  1724. 7

  1725. 6

  1726. do not

  1727. give

  1728. dogs

  1729. what is

  1730. holy

  1731. do not

  1732. throw your

  1733. pearls

  1734. to pigs

  1735. but he

  1736. throws

  1737. the children's

  1738. bread to

  1739. the dogs

  1740. here

  1741. why

  1742. because

  1743. he's

  1744. redefining

  1745. redefining

  1746. who the

  1747. dogs

  1748. are

  1749. this

  1750. woman's

  1751. faith

  1752. enabled

  1753. her to

  1754. see

  1755. her

  1756. spiritual

  1757. reality

  1758. and that

  1759. in turn

  1760. enabled

  1761. her to

  1762. humble

  1763. herself

  1764. before

  1765. Jesus

  1766. in such

  1767. a way

  1768. that

  1769. proves

  1770. that

  1771. she's

  1772. she's

  1773. no

  1774. dog

  1775. she's

  1776. invited

  1777. to the

  1778. table

  1779. as the

  1780. daughter

  1781. of the

  1782. king

  1783. so if

  1784. you feel

  1785. that you

  1786. are a

  1787. gentile

  1788. dog

  1789. undeserving

  1790. sinner

  1791. come for

  1792. the crumbs

  1793. that fall

  1794. from the

  1795. table

  1796. and you'll

  1797. find that

  1798. they are

  1799. not crumbs

  1800. at all

  1801. you're

  1802. going to

  1803. receive

  1804. the full

  1805. loaves

  1806. of bread

  1807. at the

  1808. seat

  1809. of the

  1810. table of

  1811. God

  1812. within

  1813. his

  1814. family

  1815. that's

  1816. exactly

  1817. what we

  1818. see in

  1819. the second

  1820. half

  1821. of this

  1822. passage

  1823. but I

  1824. promise you

  1825. the second

  1826. half of

  1827. this

  1828. passage

  1829. I'll be

  1830. much

  1831. briefer

  1832. in

  1833. verses

  1834. 29

  1835. to 31

  1836. we see

  1837. a summary

  1838. of Jesus

  1839. ministry

  1840. much like

  1841. what we

  1842. saw

  1843. earlier

  1844. in

  1845. chapter

  1846. 14

  1847. 34

  1848. to 36

  1849. and there

  1850. the summary

  1851. was preceded

  1852. by Jesus

  1853. miraculous

  1854. feeding

  1855. of the

  1856. 5,000

  1857. here

  1858. the summary

  1859. is succeeded

  1860. by Jesus

  1861. miraculous

  1862. feeding

  1863. of the

  1864. 4,000

  1865. so there's

  1866. clearly

  1867. some kind

  1868. of

  1869. structural

  1870. pattern

  1871. that

  1872. Matthew

  1873. is

  1874. building

  1875. here

  1876. there is

  1877. however

  1878. one key

  1879. difference

  1880. in chapter

  1881. 14

  1882. summary

  1883. Jesus

  1884. was in

  1885. Jewish

  1886. territory

  1887. here in

  1888. chapter

  1889. 15

  1890. Jesus

  1891. is still

  1892. on the

  1893. Gentile

  1894. side

  1895. of the

  1896. Sea

  1897. of

  1898. Galilee

  1899. because

  1900. he has

  1901. not yet

  1902. crossed

  1903. over

  1904. onto

  1905. the

  1906. other

  1907. side

  1908. the

  1909. parallel

  1910. account

  1911. in

  1912. Mark

  1913. 7

  1914. 31

  1915. explicitly

  1916. confirms

  1917. this

  1918. that

  1919. Jesus

  1920. is here

  1921. in

  1922. the

  1923. Decapolis

  1924. which

  1925. is a

  1926. Gentile

  1927. region

  1928. that

  1929. explains

  1930. the

  1931. somewhat

  1932. odd

  1933. conclusion

  1934. of the

  1935. crowd

  1936. in

  1937. verse

  1938. 31

  1939. it

  1940. says

  1941. they

  1942. glorify

  1943. the

  1944. God

  1945. of

  1946. Israel

  1947. that's

  1948. an

  1949. interesting

  1950. way

  1951. to put

  1952. that

  1953. because

  1954. the

  1955. response

  1956. of the

  1957. Galilean

  1958. Jews

  1959. wasn't

  1960. described

  1961. in that

  1962. manner

  1963. if

  1964. Matthew

  1965. is

  1966. talking

  1967. about

  1968. Jews

  1969. here

  1970. it

  1971. would

  1972. have

  1973. been

  1974. much

  1975. more

  1976. natural

  1977. simply

  1978. to

  1979. say

  1980. oh

  1981. they

  1982. glorify

  1983. their

  1984. God

  1985. no

  1986. but it

  1987. says

  1988. here

  1989. they

  1990. glorify

  1991. the

  1992. God

  1993. of

  1994. Israel

  1995. because

  1996. they're

  1997. Gentiles

  1998. they're

  1999. glorifying

  2000. not

  2001. their

  2002. own

  2003. ancestral

  2004. gods

  2005. but

  2006. the

  2007. God

  2008. of

  2009. Israel

  2010. so

  2011. that

  2012. detail

  2013. totally

  2014. transforms

  2015. the

  2016. significance

  2017. of

  2018. these

  2019. few

  2020. verses

  2021. verse

  2022. 30

  2023. says

  2024. and

  2025. great

  2026. crowds

  2027. came

  2028. to

  2029. him

  2030. bringing

  2031. with

  2032. them

  2033. the

  2034. lame

  2035. the

  2036. blind

  2037. the

  2038. crippled

  2039. the

  2040. mute

  2041. and

  2042. many

  2043. others

  2044. and

  2045. they

  2046. put

  2047. them

  2048. at

  2049. his

  2050. feet

  2051. and

  2052. healed

  2053. them

  2054. this

  2055. summary

  2056. list

  2057. of

  2058. ailments

  2059. here

  2060. the

  2063. blind

  2064. the

  2065. crippled

  2066. the

  2068. echoes

  2069. precisely

  2070. the

  2071. messianic

  2072. prophecy

  2073. of

  2074. Isaiah

  2075. 35

  2094. am

  2095. indeed

  2096. the

  2097. prophesied

  2098. Messiah

  2099. that

  2100. was

  2101. to

  2102. come

  2103. I

  2104. am

  2105. the

  2106. one

  2107. who

  2108. makes

  2109. the

  2110. lame

  2111. leap

  2112. like

  2113. a

  2114. deer

  2115. make

  2116. the

  2117. blind

  2118. see

  2119. make

  2120. the

  2121. mute

  2122. hear

  2123. make

  2124. the

  2125. crippled

  2126. walk

  2127. and

  2128. what's

  2129. amazing

  2130. the

  2131. unexpected

  2132. twist

  2133. of this

  2134. redemptive

  2135. story

  2136. is that

  2137. Matthew

  2138. takes

  2139. this

  2140. prophecy

  2141. about

  2142. a

  2143. Jewish

  2144. Messiah

  2145. what

  2146. he

  2147. does

  2148. for

  2149. his

  2150. people

  2151. the

  2152. Jews

  2153. and

  2154. then

  2155. applies

  2156. it

  2157. for

  2158. the

  2159. Gentiles

  2160. he's

  2161. come

  2162. for

  2163. them

  2164. too

  2165. that

  2166. trend

  2167. continues

  2168. into

  2169. the

  2170. next

  2171. paragraph

  2172. about

  2173. the

  2174. feeding

  2175. of

  2176. the

  2177. 4000

  2178. in

  2179. verses

  2180. 32

  2181. to

  2182. 39

  2183. I

  2184. won't

  2185. get

  2186. into

  2187. the

  2188. details

  2189. because

  2190. this

  2191. story

  2192. is

  2193. almost

  2194. identical

  2195. to

  2196. the

  2197. feeding

  2198. of

  2199. the

  2200. 5000

  2201. in

  2202. chapter

  2203. 14

  2204. verse

  2205. 13

  2206. to

  2207. 21

  2208. that

  2209. I

  2210. preached

  2211. on

  2212. last

  2213. month

  2214. on

  2215. Sunday

  2216. December

  2217. 14

  2218. so

  2219. if

  2220. you're

  2221. not

  2222. satisfied

  2223. with

  2224. my

  2225. treatment

  2226. of

  2227. this

  2228. passage

  2229. right

  2230. now

  2231. you

  2232. go

  2233. back

  2234. and

  2235. listen

  2236. to

  2237. that

  2238. one

  2239. okay

  2240. yeah

  2241. there

  2242. is

  2243. a

  2244. notable

  2245. difference

  2246. still

  2247. however

  2248. between

  2249. this

  2250. passage

  2251. and

  2252. again

  2253. it's

  2254. that

  2255. Jesus

  2256. is

  2257. in

  2258. Gentile

  2259. territory

  2260. he

  2261. doesn't

  2262. cross

  2263. over

  2264. into

  2265. the

  2266. Jewish

  2267. region

  2268. of

  2269. Magadan

  2270. until

  2271. verse

  2272. 39

  2273. it says

  2274. and

  2275. the

  2276. two

  2277. words

  2278. used

  2279. for

  2280. baskets

  2281. the

  2282. one

  2283. in

  2284. chapter

  2285. 14

  2286. and

  2287. the

  2288. one

  2289. in

  2290. chapter

  2291. 15

  2292. are

  2293. two

  2294. different

  2295. words

  2296. the

  2297. one

  2298. used

  2299. in

  2300. chapter

  2301. 14

  2302. is

  2303. the

  2304. type

  2305. of

  2306. basket

  2307. the

  2308. wicker

  2309. baskets

  2310. that

  2311. the

  2312. Jews

  2313. use

  2314. the

  2315. basket

  2316. mentioned

  2317. chapter

  2318. 15

  2319. is a

  2320. different

  2321. kind

  2322. of

  2323. basket

  2324. and

  2325. later

  2326. in

  2327. Jesus

  2328. summary

  2329. of

  2330. his

  2331. feeding

  2332. miracles

  2333. in

  2334. chapter

  2335. 16

  2336. Jesus

  2337. maintains

  2338. that

  2339. distinction

  2340. by using

  2341. two

  2342. different

  2343. words

  2344. for

  2345. basket

  2346. in

  2347. 16

  2348. verses

  2349. 9

  2350. to

  2351. 10

  2352. and

  2353. this

  2354. is

  2355. why

  2356. I

  2357. think

  2358. there

  2359. are

  2360. seven

  2361. baskets

  2362. here

  2363. full

  2364. of

  2365. broken

  2366. pieces

  2367. left

  2368. over

  2369. in

  2370. verse

  2371. 37

  2372. what's

  2373. the

  2374. point

  2375. what's

  2376. the

  2377. difference

  2378. in

  2379. verse

  2380. you

  2381. know

  2382. in

  2383. chapter

  2384. 14

  2385. verse

  2386. 20

  2387. they

  2388. had

  2389. 12

  2390. baskets

  2391. full

  2392. of

  2393. the

  2394. broken

  2395. pieces

  2396. left

  2397. over

  2398. 12

  2399. seems

  2400. better

  2401. than

  2402. seven

  2403. right

  2404. I

  2405. mean

  2406. did

  2407. Jesus

  2408. his

  2409. second

  2410. miracle

  2411. was

  2412. just

  2413. not

  2414. quite

  2415. as

  2416. powerful

  2417. you know

  2418. not quite

  2419. as many

  2420. left over

  2421. is that

  2422. what's

  2423. going on

  2424. no I

  2425. don't

  2426. think

  2427. that's

  2428. it

  2429. at

  2430. all

  2431. the

  2432. numbers

  2433. are

  2434. symbolic

  2435. 12

  2436. 12

  2437. is

  2438. a

  2439. number

  2440. that

  2441. represents

  2442. Israel

  2443. the

  2444. 12

  2445. sons

  2446. of

  2447. Jacob

  2448. the

  2449. 12

  2450. tribes

  2451. of

  2452. Israel

  2453. so

  2454. it's

  2455. fitting

  2456. that

  2457. in

  2458. the

  2459. feeding

  2460. of

  2461. the

  2462. 5,000

  2463. Jews

  2464. that

  2465. they

  2466. have

  2467. 12

  2468. baskets

  2469. full

  2470. left

  2471. over

  2472. to

  2473. show

  2474. that

  2475. Jesus

  2476. the

  2477. Messiah

  2478. the

  2479. bread

  2480. of

  2481. life

  2482. sent

  2483. from

  2484. heaven

  2485. is

  2486. sufficient

  2487. to

  2488. provide

  2489. for

  2490. all

  2491. of

  2492. them

  2493. but

  2494. why

  2495. the

  2496. seven

  2497. leftover

  2498. baskets

  2499. this

  2500. time

  2501. because

  2502. seven

  2503. is

  2504. the

  2505. number

  2506. seven

  2507. days

  2508. the

  2509. number

  2510. seven

  2511. comes

  2512. to

  2513. symbolize

  2514. completeness

  2515. and

  2516. fullness

  2517. all

  2518. throughout

  2519. God's

  2520. written

  2521. word

  2522. this

  2523. is

  2524. why

  2525. in

  2526. Revelation

  2527. 3

  2528. 5

  2529. Jesus

  2530. is

  2531. described

  2532. as

  2533. the

  2534. one

  2535. who

  2536. has

  2537. the

  2538. seven

  2539. spirits

  2540. of

  2541. God

  2542. and

  2543. who

  2544. holds

  2545. the

  2546. seven

  2547. stars

  2548. in

  2549. his

  2550. right

  2551. hand

  2552. not

  2553. because

  2554. God

  2555. actually

  2556. has

  2557. more

  2558. than

  2559. one

  2560. spirit

  2561. but

  2562. he's

  2563. describing

  2564. the

  2565. fullness

  2566. of

  2567. God's

  2568. spirit

  2569. his

  2570. omnipresence

  2571. and his

  2572. immensity

  2573. and his

  2574. fullness

  2575. the

  2576. seven

  2577. stars

  2578. represent

  2579. Jesus'

  2580. perfect

  2581. complete

  2582. authority

  2583. over all

  2584. the heavenly

  2585. angels

  2586. and the

  2587. churches

  2588. that they

  2589. represent

  2590. so then

  2591. when there

  2592. are seven

  2593. baskets full

  2594. of the

  2595. broken

  2596. pieces of

  2597. bread

  2598. after feeding

  2599. the

  2600. 4,000

  2601. Gentiles

  2602. plus

  2603. women

  2604. and

  2605. children

  2606. we're

  2607. supposed

  2608. to infer

  2609. from this

  2610. that Jesus

  2611. the Jewish

  2612. Messiah

  2613. is not

  2614. for the

  2615. Jews

  2616. only

  2617. he's

  2618. also

  2619. here

  2620. for

  2621. the

  2622. Gentiles

  2623. I saw

  2624. some of you

  2625. guys

  2626. taking

  2627. pictures

  2628. I'm

  2629. assuming

  2630. that the

  2631. the

  2632. chiasm

  2633. was already

  2634. projected

  2635. on the

  2636. screen

  2637. right

  2638. yeah

  2639. so

  2640. that's

  2641. a

  2642. it's

  2643. a helpful

  2644. way

  2645. to see

  2646. it

  2647. you see

  2648. Jesus

  2649. is

  2650. feeding

  2651. of the

  2652. 5,000

  2653. Jews

  2654. with 12

  2655. baskets

  2656. left over

  2657. matching

  2658. Jesus

  2659. feeding

  2660. of the

  2661. 4,000

  2662. Gentiles

  2663. with seven

  2664. baskets

  2665. left over

  2666. and then

  2667. they're

  2668. matched

  2669. by

  2670. testing

  2671. of

  2672. Peter's

  2673. faith

  2674. and

  2675. Jesus

  2676. comment

  2677. get this

  2678. that Peter

  2679. has little

  2680. faith

  2681. and then

  2682. Jesus

  2683. is testing

  2684. of the

  2685. Canaanites

  2686. woman's

  2687. faith

  2688. and telling

  2689. her that

  2690. she has

  2691. great

  2692. faith

  2693. and right

  2694. in the

  2695. middle

  2696. sandwiched

  2697. between

  2698. all of

  2699. that

  2700. Jesus

  2701. is

  2702. powerful

  2703. epoch

  2704. changing

  2705. declaration

  2706. it's

  2707. not

  2708. what

  2709. comes

  2710. from

  2711. the

  2712. outside

  2713. in

  2714. but

  2715. what

  2716. comes

  2717. from

  2718. the

  2719. inside

  2720. out

  2721. that

  2722. makes

  2723. people

  2724. unclean

  2725. this

  2726. is the

  2727. fulfillment

  2728. of Isaiah's

  2729. prophecy

  2730. in 49

  2731. 6

  2732. that it

  2733. is

  2734. too

  2735. light

  2736. a

  2737. thing

  2738. that

  2739. you

  2740. should

  2741. be

  2742. my

  2743. servant

  2744. to

  2745. raise

  2746. up

  2747. the

  2748. tribes

  2749. of

  2750. Jacob

  2751. and

  2752. to

  2753. bring

  2754. back

  2755. the

  2756. preserved

  2757. of

  2758. Israel

  2759. I

  2760. will

  2761. make

  2762. you

  2763. as

  2764. a

  2765. light

  2766. for

  2767. the

  2768. nations

  2769. that

  2770. my

  2771. salvation

  2772. may

  2773. reach

  2774. to

  2775. the

  2776. end

  2777. of

  2778. the

  2779. earth

  2780. that's

  2781. what

  2782. Jesus

  2783. has

  2784. come

  2785. to

  2786. do

  2787. and

  2788. what

  2789. is

  2790. it

  2791. that

  2792. prevented

  2793. the

  2794. Jews

  2795. and

  2796. Gentiles

  2797. from

  2798. coming

  2799. together

  2800. in

  2801. past

  2802. ages

  2803. it's

  2804. the

  2805. law

  2806. it's

  2807. the

  2808. law

  2809. of

  2810. God

  2811. the

  2812. Torah

  2813. the

  2814. Jews

  2815. had

  2816. the

  2817. law

  2818. the

  2819. Gentiles

  2820. did

  2821. not

  2822. Gentiles

  2823. did

  2824. not

  2825. obey

  2826. the

  2827. law

  2828. and

  2829. therefore

  2830. they

  2831. were

  2832. cursed

  2833. Jesus

  2834. fulfills

  2835. the

  2836. law

  2837. by

  2838. satisfying

  2839. the

  2840. justice

  2841. of

  2842. God

  2843. by

  2844. dying

  2845. on

  2846. the

  2847. cross

  2848. for

  2849. our

  2850. sins

  2851. and

  2852. absorbing

  2853. that

  2854. curse

  2855. of

  2856. the

  2857. law

  2858. in

  2859. his

  2860. own

  2861. flesh

  2862. so

  2863. that

  2864. he

  2865. can

  2866. break

  2867. down

  2868. the

  2869. dividing

  2870. wall

  2871. of

  2872. hostility

  2873. between

  2874. Jews

  2875. and

  2876. Gentiles

  2877. that's

  2878. why

  2879. Jesus

  2880. says

  2881. after

  2882. his

  2883. feeding

  2884. miracle

  2885. in

  2886. a

  2887. parallel

  2888. account

  2889. in

  2890. John

  2891. 6

  2892. after

  2893. the

  2894. feeding

  2895. the

  2896. 5,000

  2897. Jesus

  2898. said

  2899. I

  2900. am

  2901. the

  2902. bread

  2903. of

  2904. life

  2905. whoever

  2906. comes

  2907. to

  2908. me

  2909. shall

  2910. not

  2911. hunger

  2912. and

  2913. whoever

  2914. believes

  2915. in

  2916. me

  2917. shall

  2918. never

  2919. thirst

  2920. I

  2921. mentioned

  2922. to you

  2923. last month

  2924. when I

  2925. preached

  2926. on that

  2927. passage

  2928. that the

  2929. sequence

  2930. of

  2931. verbs

  2932. that are

  2933. used

  2934. to

  2935. describe

  2936. Jesus

  2937. miracle

  2938. in

  2939. the

  2940. feeding

  2941. of

  2942. the

  2943. multitudes

  2944. exactly

  2945. mirrors

  2946. the

  2947. sequence

  2948. of

  2949. verbs

  2950. used

  2951. in

  2952. the

  2953. institution

  2954. of

  2955. the

  2956. Lord's

  2957. supper

  2958. he

  2959. took

  2960. the

  2961. bread

  2962. he

  2963. gave

  2964. thanks

  2965. he

  2966. broke

  2967. it

  2968. and

  2969. he

  2970. gave

  2971. it

  2972. it's

  2973. because

  2974. Jesus

  2975. is

  2976. the

  2977. bread

  2978. of

  2979. life

  2980. I'll

  2981. conclude

  2982. with

  2983. this

  2984. imagine

  2985. being

  2986. poor

  2987. and

  2988. starved

  2989. having

  2990. nothing

  2991. to

  2992. eat

  2993. I've

  2994. never

  2995. known

  2996. that

  2997. kind

  2998. of

  2999. hunger

  3000. and

  3001. I

  3002. hope

  3003. you

  3004. never

  3005. have

  3006. either

  3007. imagine

  3008. your

  3009. stomach

  3010. feeling

  3011. hollowed

  3012. out

  3013. you

  3014. feel

  3015. cold

  3016. because

  3017. your

  3018. body

  3019. has

  3020. no

  3021. food

  3022. to

  3023. burn

  3024. your

  3025. thoughts

  3026. start

  3027. to get

  3028. muddled

  3029. because

  3030. you have

  3031. no

  3032. energy

  3033. you

  3034. can't

  3035. make

  3036. simple

  3037. decisions

  3038. anymore

  3039. you

  3040. hate

  3041. that

  3042. you

  3043. have

  3044. so

  3045. little

  3046. self

  3047. control

  3048. over

  3049. your

  3050. body

  3051. because

  3052. all

  3053. you

  3054. can

  3055. think

  3056. of

  3057. is

  3058. food

  3059. you

  3060. hear

  3061. the

  3062. sound

  3063. of

  3064. everyone

  3065. eating

  3066. around

  3067. you

  3068. the

  3069. irreverent

  3070. chewing

  3071. of

  3072. people

  3073. around

  3074. you

  3075. who

  3076. have

  3077. never

  3078. known

  3079. hunger

  3080. the

  3081. quiet

  3082. hum

  3083. of a

  3084. refrigerator

  3085. that

  3086. you

  3087. can

  3088. never

  3089. open

  3090. you

  3091. look

  3092. longingly

  3093. !

  3094. at the

  3095. neat

  3096. and

  3097. abundant

  3098. rows

  3099. of food

  3100. displays

  3101. at the

  3102. grocery

  3103. store

  3104. like a

  3105. religious

  3106. sanctuary

  3107. that is

  3108. close

  3109. to

  3110. someone

  3111. like

  3112. you

  3113. smell

  3114. everything

  3115. around

  3116. you

  3117. the

  3118. savory

  3119. aroma

  3120. of

  3121. freshly

  3122. baked

  3123. bread

  3124. that

  3125. you

  3126. cannot

  3127. break

  3128. and

  3129. you

  3130. cannot

  3131. eat

  3132. friends

  3133. that

  3134. painful

  3135. poverty

  3136. and hunger

  3137. is the

  3138. spiritual

  3139. reality

  3140. of every

  3141. human

  3142. being

  3143. apart

  3144. from

  3145. Christ

  3146. and

  3147. there's

  3148. only

  3149. one

  3150. who

  3151. can

  3152. satisfy

  3153. hunger

  3154. and

  3155. it's

  3156. Jesus

  3157. Christ

  3158. he

  3159. has

  3160. come

  3161. because

  3162. he

  3163. is a

  3164. gracious

  3165. master

  3166. and

  3167. he

  3168. died

  3169. on the

  3170. cross

  3171. to

  3172. offer

  3173. himself

  3174. as

  3175. the

  3176. bread

  3177. of

  3178. life

  3179. he

  3180. was

  3181. broken

  3182. that

  3183. we

  3184. might

  3185. feed

  3186. that

  3187. we

  3188. might

  3189. eat

  3190. and

  3191. be

  3192. nourished

  3193. unto

  3194. eternal

  3195. life

  3196. that's

  3197. the

  3198. good

  3199. news

  3200. the

  3201. gospel

  3202. of

  3203. Jesus

  3204. Christ

  3205. have

  3206. you

  3207. tasted

  3208. and

  3209. seen

  3210. that

  3211. the

  3212. Lord

  3213. is

  3214. good

  3215. let's

  3216. pray

  3217. that we

  3218. all

  3219. do

  3220. heavenly

  3221. !

  3222. Father

  3223. Lord

  3224. we

  3225. are

  3226. poor

  3227. we

  3228. hunger

  3229. and thirst

  3230. for

  3231. righteousness

  3232. Father

  3233. thank you

  3234. for

  3235. sending

  3236. your

  3237. only

  3238. son

  3239. Jesus

  3240. Christ

  3241. to be

  3242. our

  3243. bread

  3244. of

  3245. life

  3246. thank you

  3247. that you

  3248. take

  3249. Gentile

  3250. dogs

  3251. and make

  3252. them

  3253. children

  3254. and heirs

  3255. fellow

  3256. heirs

  3257. with

  3258. Christ

  3259. and

  3260. thank you

  3261. for giving

  3262. us a

  3263. seat

  3264. at your

  3265. table

  3266. Lord

  3267. help us

  3268. always

  3269. to live

  3270. with this

  3271. with the

  3272. humility

  3273. that this

  3274. Canaanite

  3275. woman

  3276. demonstrated

  3277. for us

  3278. that you

  3279. might be

  3280. our all

  3281. in all

  3282. that you

  3283. might receive

  3284. all glory

  3285. honor

  3286. and praise

  3287. that even

  3288. the most

  3289. heinous

  3290. evildoers

  3291. may see

  3292. us

  3293. and say

  3294. well if

  3295. that's what

  3296. it takes

  3297. if they

  3298. can be

  3299. safe

  3300. then surely

  3301. I

  3302. can come

  3303. for the

  3304. crumbs

  3305. Lord use

  3306. us that

  3307. way as

  3308. messengers

  3309. and witnesses

  3310. of Jesus

  3311. Christ

  3312. in Jesus

  3313. name we

  3314. pray

  3315. amen
