  1. We're in Matthew chapter 16.

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  2. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  3. ! Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  4. ! Heavenly Father, I come to this pulpit this morning with a gaping hole, a gaping hole, a sense of impotence.

  5. Because I realize that unless you open the eyes of the blind, unless you illuminate the eyes of people's hearts, they cannot see you in your glory.

  6. So Lord, I plead that we begin with prayer.

  7. That you would, by your Holy Spirit, open the eyes of our hearts to behold the glory and the grace of Jesus Christ, your Son.

  8. Fill us with faith and hope and love as we cling to your word.

  9. Speak to us from your word as you always do.

  10. They might be built up as the people of God.

  11. The invincible church of Christ, against which the gates of Hades cannot prevail.

  12. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  13. Please stand if we are able to honor God together as we read from his word.

  14. Matthew chapter 16, verses 1 to 20.

    Matthew 16:1–20

  15. And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him, they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

  16. He answered them,

  17. When it is evening, you say, it will be fair weather, for the sky is red.

  18. And in the morning, it will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.

  19. You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

  20. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

  21. So he left them and departed.

  22. When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread.

  23. Jesus said to them,

  24. Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  25. And they began discussing it among themselves, saying,

  26. We brought no bread.

  27. But Jesus, aware of this, said,

  28. Oh, you of little faith,

  29. Why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?

  30. Do you not yet perceive?

  31. Do you not remember the five loaves for the 5,000 and how many baskets you gathered?

  32. Or the seven loaves for the 4,000 and how many baskets you gathered?

  33. How is it that you failed to understand that I did not speak about bread?

  34. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  35. Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread,

  36. but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  37. Now, when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi,

  38. he asked his disciples,

  39. Who do people say that the Son of Man is?

  40. And they said,

  41. Some say John the Baptist,

  42. Others say Elijah,

  43. And others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

  44. He said to them,

  45. But who do you say that I am?

  46. Simon Peter replied,

  47. You are the Christ,

  48. the Son of the living God.

  49. And Jesus answered him,

  50. Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah,

  51. for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,

  52. but my Father who is in heaven.

  53. And I tell you,

  54. you are Peter,

  55. and on this rock I will build my church,

  56. and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

  57. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven,

  58. and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven,

  59. and whatever you lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

  60. Then he strictly charged the disciples,

  61. tell no one that he was the Christ.

  62. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  63. Please be seated.

  64. Throughout the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,

  65. Jesus asks many questions.

  66. In fact, he asks over 300 questions

  67. throughout the course of the Gospels.

  68. Far more frequently than the times that other people ask him questions.

  69. This was Jesus' way of engaging people

  70. and of teaching people,

  71. of asking thought-provoking questions

  72. and challenging their assumptions

  73. and shedding light and exposing people's hearts

  74. and revealing the eternal truths of God.

  75. But of all the questions that Jesus asked,

  76. the one that he asks in this passage,

  77. Matthew 16, 15,

  78. is the most significant one.

  79. Who do you say that I am?

  80. Life or death?

  81. Heaven or hell?

  82. Our eternal destiny hangs on,

  83. in the balance of the way we respond to that one question.

  84. Jesus has been called many things

  85. throughout the Gospel of Matthew.

  86. People have addressed him

  87. with the Messianic title of Son of David.

  88. The demons have called out,

  89. saying, Son of God.

  90. Even the disciples themselves,

  91. in days' confusion,

  92. after seeing Jesus walk on the water,

  93. have declared,

  94. you are truly the Son of God.

  95. And here in this passage,

  96. once and for all,

  97. Jesus settles all the questions,

  98. all the debate,

  99. and declares who he is.

  100. Who is Jesus?

  101. And his answer is this,

  102. he is the Son of the immortal God

  103. who builds his invincible church.

  104. Jesus is the Son of the immortal God

  105. who builds his invincible church.

  106. And we're going to first talk about

  107. how Jesus warns us,

  108. beware of the leaven of the false teaching

  109. of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

  110. And secondly,

  111. we're going to talk about

  112. how we ought to share the bread of life,

  113. which is Jesus Christ.

  114. After a powerful ministry among the Gentiles,

  115. at the end of chapter 15,

  116. Jesus crossed back over

  117. to the Jewish territory of Magadan.

  118. And then immediately,

  119. he is met with skeptical Jewish leaders,

  120. the antagonistic Sadducees and the Pharisees.

  121. He says that they came,

  122. and to test him,

  123. they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

  124. The Pharisees and the Sadducees

  125. were the two dominant ideological groups

  126. in the first century Judaism.

  127. They together made up the Sanhedrin,

  128. which is the highest ruling body

  129. in the Jewish community.

  130. It's the highest ruling religious body

  131. and political body as well.

  132. And the Sanhedrin was in cahoots with the Romans.

  133. They argue,

  134. the Sadducees in particular,

  135. argue that there's no resurrection,

  136. nor angel, nor spirit,

  137. while the Pharisees believed in all those things.

  138. So the Sadducees and Pharisees,

  139. actually on many counts,

  140. were at odds with each other.

  141. The Pharisees were like the religious conservatives,

  142. the constitutional originalists,

  143. who wanted the people to return to the Bible.

  144. The Sadducees were kind of the liberals of their day.

  145. However, in this instance,

  146. these two rival factions

  147. make common cause

  148. to oppose a single foe in Jesus Christ.

  149. So it's not good news

  150. that the Pharisees and the Sadducees

  151. have joined up here to test Jesus.

  152. We know that they're not trying to

  153. ask a sincere question.

  154. They're trying to trip him up

  155. because that's the way the word test is used

  156. whenever the Jewish leaders come to test him.

  157. This is a bipartisan inquisition

  158. into Jesus' teaching and ministry.

  159. And they demand from him

  160. that Jesus show them a sign from heaven.

  161. If this were the first time

  162. that these Jewish leaders encountered Jesus

  163. or heard of Jesus,

  164. maybe we'll think that that's a genuine request.

  165. But the request rings hollow

  166. in light of what we've observed so far

  167. in the previous two chapters.

  168. In Matthew 14, 9,

  169. Jesus specifically looks up to heaven, he says,

  170. and then prays over the five loaves of bread.

  171. And then he goes on to feed 5,000 men

  172. besides women and children on top of that

  173. with that five loaves of bread.

  174. Is that not a sign from heaven?

  175. And then in Matthew 15,

  176. Jesus repeats that miracle among the Gentiles.

  177. The 4,000 Gentiles.

  178. And then sandwiched between

  179. those two multiplication miracles

  180. are two summary statements

  181. of Jesus' ministry among the Jews first

  182. and then Jesus' ministry among the Gentiles,

  183. both of which tell us that

  184. they brought all kinds of sick and ill

  185. and demonized people.

  186. And at the touch of his hand,

  187. they were all healed.

  188. People came and they wanted to just touch

  189. the fringe of Jesus' garment

  190. knowing that they would be healed.

  191. And they were.

  192. And in the summary of Jesus' ministry

  193. among the Gentiles in Matthew 15,

  194. he says that the mute speak,

  195. the crippled are healthy,

  196. the lame walk in the blind see.

  197. Are these not signs from heaven?

  198. And yet Pharisees and Sadducees

  199. ask for another sign.

  200. And Jesus perceptively and rightly refuses.

  201. The scribes and the Pharisees

  202. in previous chapters had asked for a sign also.

  203. And Jesus responded to them

  204. in a very similar way.

  205. Here there's a little bit of a meteorological,

  206. a metaphor here.

  207. When it is evening, you say,

  208. it will be fair weather,

  209. for the sky is red.

  210. And in the morning, it will be stormy today,

  211. for the sky is red and threatening.

  212. You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky,

  213. but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

  214. There's a rhyme that ancient mariners used often.

  215. It goes like this.

  216. Red sky at night, sailors delight.

  217. Red sky at morning, sailors warning.

  218. I am, I'm a no, I'm no weather scientist,

  219. but I know how to search for things on Google.

  220. And when the air is highly, highly pressured,

  221. and it traps dust and particles,

  222. and that filters apparently,

  223. that filters out blue light,

  224. so that all you see is the red and the orange hues

  225. of a red sky.

  226. And that kind of high-pressured air apparently is good.

  227. But it creates fair weather,

  228. because as the dense, stable air sinks down,

  229. it traps moisture.

  230. It dissipates clouds.

  231. It inhibits cloud formation.

  232. And because weather systems,

  233. and I just learned this,

  234. that generally they move from west to east,

  235. if a red sunset means that where the sun is setting,

  236. in the west, there is good weather.

  237. And because weather systems travel from west to east,

  238. that means the weather,

  239. good weather is coming toward you.

  240. It's ahead.

  241. However, if you,

  242. if you, a red sunrise is what you see,

  243. then that means where the sun is rising in the east

  244. is already behind you.

  245. It's past you.

  246. That good weather system has passed you,

  247. so that means there's likely bad weather coming.

  248. It's interesting that the same red sky,

  249. depending on your orientation toward it,

  250. which direction you are facing it,

  251. could mean fair weather or foul weather.

  252. Likewise, it is your orientation toward Jesus Christ,

  253. the Son of God,

  254. whether you come to Him in faith or unbelief,

  255. that determines whether you have peace with God or wrath.

  256. You face the wrath of God.

  257. As it says in Matthew 3, 11 to 12,

  258. those who turn to Jesus in faith

  259. are baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  260. That represents God's gracious, powerful presence

  261. indwelling His people,

  262. the Holy Spirit and fire.

  263. But those who reject Jesus, it says,

  264. will be burned with unquenchable fire.

  265. It's the same fire of God,

  266. but it could mean God's gracious presence with His people

  267. or the fiery wrath,

  268. unquenchable flames of judgment.

  269. These Pharisees and Sadducees knew how to interpret the appearance of the sky,

  270. but they could not interpret the signs of the times.

  271. They didn't know how to interpret and understand

  272. what Jesus was doing and who He was.

  273. They did not understand that He was the Messiah,

  274. the Christ,

  275. the Son of the living God.

  276. And that's the question that Jesus poses to us this morning.

  277. Who do you say that I am?

  278. Jesus says in verse 4,

  279. an evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign,

  280. but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

  281. Jesus did, as I mentioned in the previous weeks,

  282. perform signs sometimes to help people,

  283. to prove His messianic identity.

  284. And He did that for those who genuinely sought Him

  285. and wanted to humbly put their trust in Him.

  286. But He consistently refuses to indulge the testing of people

  287. who question Him out of pride and unbelief

  288. and evil and adulterous generation.

  289. To such people, there is no sign that will suffice

  290. because their questions do not stem from a heart of faith

  291. that's seeking understanding,

  292. but rather from an evil and adulterous heart.

  293. So even though throughout the Gospels,

  294. Jesus performs many spectacular miracles

  295. that defy the laws of nature,

  296. there are people who always stubbornly persist

  297. in their unbelief.

  298. And this is why, in this case,

  299. Jesus refuses their demand for a sign.

  300. Instead, Jesus points to a singular, decisive sign

  301. that should be sufficient for all of us,

  302. and that's the sign of Jonah

  303. that Andrew preached on some weeks ago.

  304. Matthew 12, 40-41,

  305. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights

  306. in the belly of the great fish,

  307. so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights

  308. in the heart of the earth.

  309. The sign of Jonah is the death and resurrection of Jesus,

  310. that Jesus died for the sins of His people,

  311. He was buried in the heart of the earth,

  312. and on the third day,

  313. He was raised to new life for our justification.

  314. That's the sign that God has provided,

  315. and no more will be given.

  316. That's the sign that you must reckon with and believe.

  317. He says in verse 4,

  318. So He left them and departed.

  319. Because these Jewish leaders persist in their unbelief,

  320. this is the end of Jesus' mission in Galilee.

  321. Now He will resolutely set His direction toward Jerusalem

  322. and toward His crucifixion and resurrection,

  323. after which He will resume His ministry to the Galileans.

  324. After their departure,

  325. Jesus says to His disciples in verse 6,

  326. Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  327. They had just had a confrontation

  328. with the Pharisees and the Sadducees,

  329. and Jesus is clearly warning them

  330. about them and their teaching,

  331. as Matthew explains in verse 12.

  332. But Jesus' disciples are kind of clueless at this moment.

  333. They don't understand.

  334. They had forgotten to pack bread for their journey.

  335. And so they think Jesus is talking about that.

  336. Oh, I think Jesus knows that we forgot bread.

  337. We need to go get bread somewhere.

  338. But He says,

  339. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

  340. I don't know, maybe they have a bakery somewhere.

  341. Be careful.

  342. Be careful.

  343. Let's not make sure to get the wrong leavened bread.

  344. Honestly, it's a little hard to see

  345. how they could possibly misunderstand this.

  346. And Jesus shares my disbelief in verse 11.

  347. How is it that you fail to understand

  348. that I did not speak about bread?

  349. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

  350. Both the word understand and the word bread

  351. have been recurring themes in the preceding chapters.

  352. The word understand, if you might recall,

  353. if you're with us in the parables of the kingdom in chapter 13,

  354. in the parables of the sower,

  355. it contrasts the seeds that bear fruit

  356. versus the seeds that do not bear fruit.

  357. The seeds that do not bear fruit

  358. are those who hear the word but do not understand.

  359. But the seeds that bear fruit are those who hear the word

  360. and understand and bear fruit up to a hundredfold.

  361. Jesus twice says in this passage

  362. that his disciples did not understand.

  363. The word perceive in verse 9 is the same word,

  364. just translated differently, understand, as in verse 11.

  365. Do you not yet perceive?

  366. Even the 12 disciples do not understand,

  367. apart from Jesus' kind explanations,

  368. but with some help from Jesus,

  369. it says in verse 12 that they finally understood

  370. that Jesus was not talking about bread,

  371. but of the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

  372. Jesus reminds them of the multiplication of bread

  373. and the miraculous feeding of the 5,000 Jews

  374. with five loaves of bread

  375. and 4,000 Gentiles with seven loaves of bread,

  376. that Jesus is the bread of life sent by God from heaven

  377. to nourish the people of God,

  378. both Jews and Gentiles, unto eternal life.

  379. They've seen all that.

  380. The disciples have been witnesses to all that.

  381. The history-making, the world-changing,

  382. people-saving, and kingdom-coming event

  383. is unfolding right in front of their eyes,

  384. and yet they worry about bread.

  385. Do you see the absurdity of that?

  386. Even at a basic logical level,

  387. not understanding all that about who Jesus is,

  388. like Jesus just fed 5,000 people

  389. with five loaves of bread.

  390. Do you think that you forgot bread

  391. and now Jesus is like, oh no.

  392. You forgot bread.

  393. Now we're not going to have anything to eat.

  394. How could you?

  395. Come on.

  396. Of course not.

  397. Jesus chides the disciples in verse 8,

  398. oh you of little faith,

  399. why are you discussing among yourselves

  400. the fact that you don't have no bread?

  401. This ammunition, oh you of little faith,

  402. is one we've seen earlier on in the Sermon on the Mount

  403. in Matthew 6, 25 to 34,

  404. and I think Jesus is intentionally invoking what he taught.

  405. There, he says in there,

  406. do not worry about your life,

  407. what you will eat or drink,

  408. or what you will wear.

  409. Do not worry,

  410. because he says,

  411. look at the birds of the air.

  412. Do not sow or reap or store away in barns,

  413. and yet your heavenly father feeds them.

  414. Are you not much more valuable than they?

  415. Can any of you by worrying

  416. add a single hour to your life?

  417. And why do you worry about clothes?

  418. Look at the lilies of the field

  419. and how they grow.

  420. Not even Solomon, king of Israel,

  421. not even Solomon in all his splendor

  422. was dressed like one of these.

  423. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field,

  424. which is here today

  425. and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,

  426. will he not much more clothe you,

  427. you of little faith?

  428. That's the exact same phrase,

  429. oh you of little faith.

  430. So do not worry,

  431. saying what shall we eat

  432. or what shall we drink

  433. or what shall we wear,

  434. for the Gentiles run after all these things.

  435. And your heavenly father knows that you need them,

  436. but instead seek first his kingdom

  437. and its righteousness

  438. and all these things will be added to you as well.

  439. How often,

  440. even though our heavenly father has promised

  441. to provide for all of our needs,

  442. do we worry about what we will eat?

  443. And no matter how much we worry

  444. and no matter how much we plan our days

  445. and plan our budgets,

  446. we cannot extend the length of our lives

  447. by a single hour.

  448. We will die exactly when God appointed for us to die.

  449. But why does this happen to us?

  450. Why do we worry?

  451. Like why do the disworldly

  452. and temporal concerns of money

  453. and things and food and drink and clothes,

  454. why do they feel so real

  455. and so imminent and urgent

  456. that we forget and lose sight

  457. of these spiritual eternal realities?

  458. Two failures, Jesus says,

  459. account for this in verse nine.

  460. One, a failure to remember.

  461. Two, a failure to perceive.

  462. First, we fixate on what we do not have

  463. and we worry

  464. because we do not remember

  465. the five loaves for the 5,000.

  466. So if you're worried about something

  467. in your life today,

  468. then take time to remember

  469. how God has provided for you,

  470. how God has come through for you

  471. time and time again.

  472. And secondly, there's a failure to perceive.

  473. We get tunnel vision

  474. because if we fail to perceive

  475. that God is who he says he is,

  476. we're so fixated on the bread

  477. that we forgot to pack,

  478. the bread that we're worried

  479. we might not have,

  480. that we forget

  481. that Jesus is the bread of life

  482. who gives eternal life

  483. and that he is with us

  484. and indwells us by his spirit.

  485. We do not perceive

  486. that the creator of the heavens

  487. and the earth

  488. is our heavenly father

  489. who provides for us.

  490. So let me ask you,

  491. has your life recently been consumed

  492. by your earning and spending

  493. and saving the food you eat

  494. and the clothes you wear?

  495. Have the mundane realities of life

  496. taken up the entirety of your vision

  497. so that you are losing sight

  498. of eternal realities,

  499. of your heavenly perspective,

  500. of seeking first the kingdom of God

  501. and its righteousness?

  502. Are you aware today

  503. of what God is doing

  504. in and through you

  505. and in and through your neighbors

  506. and your friends,

  507. what God is doing

  508. in and through your children?

  509. Are you aware of these realities?

  510. The bread that the disciples

  511. forgot to pack

  512. was the last thing

  513. on Jesus' mind.

  514. Instead, he was warning them

  515. about the leaven

  516. of the false teaching

  517. of the Pharisees

  518. and the Sadducees.

  519. Leaven sometimes is used

  520. in a positive metaphor

  521. throughout the gospel.

  522. We saw that in chapter 13,

  523. but here it's clearly being used

  524. in a negative way.

  525. Leaven is fermented dough

  526. from an old batch

  527. of fermented bread,

  528. like the way people

  529. in our church make sourdough bread.

  530. And you combine

  531. that leftover batch

  532. that you've set aside

  533. with the new batch

  534. and then it leavens

  535. the entire batch

  536. of new bread.

  537. However,

  538. this is an ingenious way

  539. to save

  540. and to continue the process,

  541. especially when you don't

  542. have yeast.

  543. But if the leaven

  544. that you're using

  545. is contaminated,

  546. it will also spread

  547. contamination

  548. through the entire batch

  549. of bread.

  550. The Pharisees

  551. and the Sadducees

  552. settled skepticism.

  553. Their rejection

  554. of Jesus

  555. as the Christ,

  556. the son of the living God,

  557. is like leaven

  558. contaminated

  559. with bad bacteria

  560. that spreads

  561. through the entire bread.

  562. Jesus' warning

  563. about leaven

  564. gets picked up

  565. later by Apostle Paul

  566. in two separate occasions

  567. in the New Testament.

  568. And these passages

  569. helpfully illustrate

  570. the two ways

  571. that leaven

  572. can taint

  573. the bread of Jesus Christ,

  574. the gospel

  575. of Jesus Christ.

  576. The first kind of leaven

  577. is lawlessness.

  578. When writing

  579. to the Corinthian church

  580. that's tolerating

  581. sexual immorality

  582. among their own members,

  583. Paul commands them

  584. in 1 Corinthians 5,

  585. 6-9,

  586. Do you not know

  587. that a little leaven

  588. leavens the whole lump?

  589. Cleanse out the old leaven

  590. that you may be a new lump

  591. as you really are unleavened.

  592. For Christ,

  593. our Passover lamb,

  594. has been sacrificed.

  595. Do not associate

  596. with sexually immoral people.

  597. Sin is like

  598. an infectious disease.

  599. It never stays put.

  600. It always spreads.

  601. It grows worse

  602. if you leave it unattended,

  603. if you do not repent of it

  604. and turn from it.

  605. This is why

  606. we must decisively remove

  607. everything that caused us to sin.

  608. That's why Jesus

  609. is so emphatic

  610. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  611. If your right eye causes you to sin,

  612. gouge it out

  613. and throw it away.

  614. He's not saying literally

  615. gouge out your eye.

  616. He's saying remove decisively

  617. the cause of sin

  618. in your life.

  619. This is why

  620. we cannot tolerate

  621. unrepentant sin

  622. within the church of Christ.

  623. As A.W. Tozer once wrote,

  624. the vague and tenuous hope

  625. that God is too kind

  626. to punish the ungodly

  627. has become

  628. a deadly opiate

  629. for the consciences

  630. of millions.

  631. Tolerating

  632. unrepentant sin

  633. out of so-called kindness

  634. is a denial

  635. of the gospel

  636. of Jesus Christ.

  637. God took sin

  638. so seriously

  639. He didn't just

  640. say,

  641. oh, that's fine.

  642. Forget about it.

  643. He sent His own Son,

  644. His only Son,

  645. Jesus Christ,

  646. to die

  647. to pay the penalty

  648. for our sins.

  649. That's how seriously

  650. God took sin

  651. and who are we

  652. to look at sin

  653. and just wink the eye

  654. and say,

  655. yeah,

  656. no big deal.

  657. No need for repentance.

  658. That's a dangerous leaven

  659. that contaminates

  660. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  661. with does not give life.

  662. The second kind of leaven

  663. is legalism.

  664. Writing to the Galatian church

  665. who had been deceived

  666. by the Judaizers

  667. into thinking

  668. that Gentile converts

  669. to Christianity

  670. must get circumcised

  671. and keep the Old Testament law

  672. in order to be saved.

  673. Paul says in Galatians 5,

  674. for freedom Christ

  675. has set us free.

  676. Therefore,

  677. do not let yourself,

  678. do not submit again

  679. to the yoke of slavery

  680. if you accept circumcision.

  681. circumcision,

  682. this is what Paul says,

  683. Christ will be

  684. of no advantage

  685. to you.

  686. I testify again

  687. to every man

  688. who accepts circumcision

  689. that he is obligated

  690. to keep the whole law.

  691. You are severed

  692. from Christ.

  693. You who would be

  694. justified by the law,

  695. you have fallen

  696. away from grace.

  697. Our little leaven

  698. leavens the whole lump,

  699. he says.

  700. Anyone who suggests

  701. that faith in Jesus Christ alone

  702. is insufficient

  703. for our salvation.

  704. Anyone who denies

  705. what we were just singing earlier

  706. of the all-sufficient

  707. merit of Jesus Christ

  708. applied to us.

  709. Anyone who adds

  710. to the requirements

  711. of the gospel

  712. and suggests

  713. that your standing

  714. with God

  715. does not depend solely

  716. on what Christ

  717. has accomplished for you.

  718. No, no, no.

  719. It depends on

  720. your works,

  721. your good deeds,

  722. your performance.

  723. That is a dangerous leaven

  724. that corrupts

  725. and spoils

  726. the bread of life.

  727. As a church of Christ,

  728. we must guard

  729. against these leavens

  730. of false teaching.

  731. The church of the living God,

  732. it says in 1 Timothy 3.15,

  733. is meant to be a pillar

  734. and a buttress

  735. of the truth.

  736. That's one of the purposes

  737. of the church.

  738. We exist to uphold

  739. and uplift

  740. the truth of the gospel

  741. of Jesus Christ

  742. and that's why

  743. we have to be vigilant

  744. and beware of the leavens

  745. of false teaching.

  746. Not because we enjoy

  747. being censorious,

  748. contrarian,

  749. and pointing fingers,

  750. and correcting people.

  751. No, but because

  752. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  753. is that precious.

  754. Because apart from it,

  755. there is no salvation.

  756. We must guard it.

  757. And that's now the point

  758. that Jesus turns to

  759. in the second half

  760. of the passage.

  761. He talks about

  762. the bread of life

  763. that should be declared,

  764. that should be shared.

  765. He asks his disciples

  766. in verse 13,

  767. who do people say

  768. that the Son of Man is?

  769. The Son of Man

  770. is Jesus' preferred way

  771. of referring to himself.

  772. I think for a number

  773. of reasons.

  774. Two main reasons.

  775. One, because of its allusion

  776. to Daniel 7, 13 to 14.

  777. But secondly,

  778. because it was

  779. an ambiguous enough title

  780. that was not used

  781. widely at the time.

  782. So it's kind of

  783. an empty shell almost.

  784. It's not theologically loaded

  785. like terms that the Jews

  786. already used

  787. like the Son of David.

  788. So Jesus could kind of

  789. supply the content,

  790. the theological content

  791. for that phrase.

  792. And define who he is

  793. and what the messianic mission is.

  794. Obviously, it's not clear enough

  795. what the Son of Man is

  796. because people are saying

  797. and debating

  798. and speculating

  799. who do people say

  800. that the Son of Man is.

  801. The disciples reply,

  802. some say John the Baptist,

  803. others say Elijah,

  804. and others Jeremiah

  805. or one of the prophets.

  806. Remember a few chapters ago,

  807. Herod Antipas'

  808. kind of fanciful speculation,

  809. Jesus doing so many miracles,

  810. he conjectures that,

  811. oh, this must be

  812. John the Baptist

  813. raised from the dead

  814. because miraculous powers

  815. are working in him.

  816. Herod Antipas beheaded John

  817. and now he's afraid

  818. that Jesus is John the Baptist

  819. resurrected.

  820. Some people were saying

  821. that about him.

  822. The disciples,

  823. some people thought

  824. that he was Elijah.

  825. There were expectations

  826. of Elijah returning,

  827. not only because he was

  828. one of the most powerful

  829. prophets of the Old Testament,

  830. but also because he did not

  831. die a natural death.

  832. He was translated directly

  833. to heaven by God.

  834. And so because of the prophecy

  835. of Malachi 4 or 5,

  836. which prophesied

  837. that God would send again

  838. the prophet Elijah

  839. before he himself

  840. comes to save his people,

  841. there was this feverish expectation

  842. trying to find out

  843. who this Elijah might be.

  844. And so some people thought

  845. Jesus was Elijah.

  846. Still others thought

  847. that Jesus was Jeremiah

  848. or one of the prophets.

  849. Prophet Jeremiah incurred

  850. the wrath of his own people

  851. by prophesying

  852. of the downfall of Judah

  853. and the destruction

  854. of the temple of Jerusalem.

  855. And Jesus does the same thing.

  856. He denounces the Jewish leaders

  857. in chapters 21 to 23

  858. and then he prophesies

  859. of the destruction

  860. of the temple of Jerusalem

  861. in chapter 24.

  862. So he fits this pattern

  863. of Jeremiah's ministry.

  864. And because Deuteronomy 18, 15

  865. prophesied that God

  866. would raise up

  867. another end time prophet

  868. like Moses, he says,

  869. there were many

  870. prophetic expectations.

  871. Maybe it would be a Jeremiah.

  872. Maybe it would be another prophet

  873. that will come.

  874. So many speculations.

  875. All that to say,

  876. the crowd's estimation of Jesus

  877. is not bad, right?

  878. These are all good people.

  879. All good godly people.

  880. I mean, they could have

  881. compared Jesus to Janus and Jambres,

  882. the court magicians

  883. of Pharaoh in Exodus.

  884. No, they don't compare him.

  885. They compare him to Elijah,

  886. Jeremiah, John the Baptist,

  887. whom Jesus himself said

  888. is that there's no one

  889. born of woman greater

  890. than John the Baptist.

  891. John the Baptist

  892. is the greatest man

  893. that lived under the Old Covenant.

  894. This is a high estimation of Jesus,

  895. but it's not high enough.

  896. as we see in Jesus' response.

  897. And that's true

  898. in our day and age as well.

  899. You are not likely

  900. to meet people

  901. throughout the world

  902. that hate Jesus

  903. and denounce Jesus.

  904. Muslims believe that Jesus

  905. was one of the highest ranked

  906. and most beloved prophets.

  907. the Sikhs believe that Jesus

  908. was a high ranked holy man.

  909. Jehovah's Witnesses believe

  910. that Jesus is the highest

  911. of all God's creatures.

  912. Christian scientists believe

  913. that Jesus was the first human

  914. to manifest fully

  915. the truth of Christian science.

  916. Some political theorists

  917. and sociologists believe

  918. that Jesus was a social

  919. and political genius

  920. who revolutionized

  921. and restructured society.

  922. Many Buddhists and atheists

  923. and secular moral theorists

  924. openly declare that Jesus

  925. was a great moral teacher.

  926. These are wonderful,

  927. lofty things

  928. to say about any person.

  929. But when it comes to Jesus

  930. and your estimation of Jesus,

  931. it is not good enough.

  932. It's not high enough.

  933. So Jesus turns to his disciples

  934. because they're the ones

  935. to whom the secrets

  936. of the kingdom

  937. have been revealed.

  938. They've been privy

  939. to Jesus' work

  940. and to his miracles

  941. and to his private explanations

  942. and teachings.

  943. So he expects them

  944. to have a better reply

  945. than the crowds.

  946. And he asks them,

  947. who do you say that I am?

  948. Not what your friends

  949. and family say about Jesus.

  950. Who do you say that I am?

  951. Have you,

  952. if you're here

  953. and you do not yet follow

  954. Jesus Christ as your Lord,

  955. have you open-mindedly,

  956. seriously and honestly

  957. considered and wrestled

  958. with that question?

  959. Who do you say that I am?

  960. And that question was posed

  961. to all of Jesus' disciples,

  962. but Peter alone answers

  963. because he's the leader

  964. and the spokesperson

  965. for the 12 apostles.

  966. That's why he's always listed first

  967. in the list of apostles

  968. throughout the Gospels.

  969. And we've seen him speak

  970. on behalf of the apostles

  971. many times

  972. throughout the Gospel of Matthew.

  973. It's a consistent pattern

  974. throughout all of the Gospels.

  975. This is also the only instance

  976. in the Gospel of Matthew

  977. where we're given Peter's full name,

  978. Simon Peter.

  979. So there's an added degree

  980. of solemnity and formality

  981. to this occasion.

  982. Peter responds,

  983. you are the Christ,

  984. the Son of the living God.

  985. The word Christ,

  986. as I think all of you know,

  987. does not,

  988. it's not Jesus' last name.

  989. It's a title that means

  990. Messiah,

  991. anointed one.

  992. The Jews believe,

  993. in accordance with the prophecies

  994. in the Old Testament,

  995. that God would raise up a king

  996. from the line of David

  997. who would represent him

  998. and return the people of God

  999. to their glory

1000. in the presence of God.

1001. And related to that concept

  1002. of Christ, Messiah,

1003. was the idea of the Son of God.

1004. In the covenant that God made

  1005. with King David,

  1006. he said in 2 Samuel 7, 12-14,

1007. I will raise up your offspring

1008. after you who shall come

  1009. from your body.

  1010. That's why messianic expectations

1011. didn't expect from the Messiah

1012. to come from the line of David.

  1013. And he continues,

1014. I will establish his kingdom.

1015. He shall build a house for my name

1016. and I will establish the throne

  1017. of his kingdom forever.

1018. I will be to him a father

1019. and he shall be to me a son.

  1020. So that's fulfilled

  1021. in the immediate sense

  1022. by King Solomon,

1023. but it waits its ultimate fulfillment

  1024. in Jesus Christ.

1025. That's what gets picked up

  1026. in Psalm chapter 2,

    Psalms 2:7–8

  1027. verse 7-8,

  1028. where God says concerning

  1029. his messianic king,

  1030. you are my son.

1031. Today I have begotten you.

1032. That's why the title Christ,

  1033. Son of God,

  1034. are organically connected

  1035. throughout the Gospels.

  1036. Jesus' disciples,

  1037. if you remember,

  1038. have already declared,

  1039. kind of in a,

  1040. you know,

  1041. startled days

1042. after seeing Jesus walk on water,

1043. truly you are the Son of God.

  1044. That's when the truth

  1045. first dawned on them.

  1046. But since then,

  1047. they've had time

1048. to ponder that weighty truth.

1049. If that's what that means,

1050. if that's really who Jesus is,

1051. what are all the implications

  1052. of this?

1053. So they've had the time

  1054. to process that

  1055. startling declaration,

  1056. and then the truth

  1057. is sinking in,

1058. and now this is the formal,

  1059. considered answer

  1060. to Jesus' question,

1061. who do you say that I am?

  1062. And Peter,

  1063. as a representative

  1064. of the 12,

  1065. says,

  1066. you are the Christ,

1067. the Son of the living God.

  1068. God,

  1069. it's an awe-inspiring moment.

  1070. It's like a,

  1071. it's like a thunderclap

1072. that rips and peels open

  1073. the heavens to reveal

  1074. who Jesus really is

  1075. to all of us.

1076. And I think Son of God

1077. is not merely a metaphor anymore,

  1078. a messianic title for,

  1079. for a king,

  1080. the king of Israel,

  1081. king of Judah.

  1082. No,

  1083. because Jesus said earlier

  1084. in Matthew chapter 11,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  1085. 27,

1086. all things have been handed over

1087. to me by my Father.

1088. And no one knows the Son

  1089. except the Father,

1090. and no one knows the Father

  1091. except the Son,

  1092. and anyone to whom

1093. the Son chooses to reveal Him.

1094. who dares to talk like that?

1095. That He has exclusive knowledge

  1096. of God the Father?

1097. That He has the authority

  1098. to reveal the things

1099. that have been handed over to Him

  1100. by His Father?

  1101. What manner of man

  1102. talks like that?

  1103. Who dares to say,

1104. all things have been handed over

1105. to me by my Father?

1106. What do you mean all things?

1107. God the Father is a sovereign ruler

1108. and creator of the heavens

  1109. and the earth.

1110. All authority in heaven and earth

  1111. resides with Him.

  1112. And you're saying,

1113. all things have been handed over

1114. to you by your Father.

  1115. This profession of faith

  1116. is more than affirming

  1117. a metaphor of Jesus

1118. being the Son of God,

  1119. a king.

  1120. No, He's saying,

1121. you are the Son of the living God.

  1122. Like an actual son.

  1123. The only begotten Son.

1124. And this profession of faith

  1125. elicits an amazing commendation

1126. from Jesus in verse 17.

  1127. Blessed are you,

  1128. Simon Bar-Jonah,

  1129. for flesh and blood

1130. has not revealed this to you,

  1131. but my Father

  1132. who is in heaven.

  1133. Bar-Jonah simply means

1134. it's Aramaic for son of Jonah,

  1135. which is Peter's dad's name.

  1136. Also rendered John

  1137. in other places.

  1138. In John 1.42,

  1139. he's called John.

  1140. John-Jonah,

  1141. variations.

  1142. And notice that Jesus

1143. doesn't pat Peter on the back

  1144. saying,

  1145. attaboy.

  1146. You know,

  1147. I knew you were

1148. the smart one of the bunch.

1149. That's why I made you first one.

  1150. No, Jesus says,

  1151. for flesh and blood

1152. has not revealed this to you,

  1153. but my Father

  1154. who is in heaven.

1155. Jesus does not credit Peter

  1156. with this realization

1157. by his own brilliant reasoning

  1158. and diligent study.

  1159. No, this truth

  1160. was revealed to him

  1161. by God the Father.

  1162. It's hard to overstate

1163. the importance of this truth.

  1164. Christianity

  1165. is a religion

  1166. founded on revelation,

  1167. something that God himself

  1168. has disclosed

  1169. and revealed to us.

  1170. It is not

1171. a product of human research,

  1172. ingenuity,

  1173. discovery,

  1174. or enlightenment.

  1175. enlightenment.

  1176. This is why

  1177. you can find people

  1178. who have PhDs

  1179. in Bible and theology

1180. who have not a shred of faith

  1181. in the living God.

  1182. You don't arrive

1183. at the knowledge of God

  1184. by human effort.

  1185. That knowledge

1186. must be revealed by God

1187. so that we might receive it.

  1188. 1 Corinthians 1.14

  1189. says,

  1190. spiritual truths

  1191. are spiritually discerned

  1192. and the natural person

  1193. apart from the help

  1194. of the Spirit

  1195. enabling power

  1196. of the Holy Spirit

  1197. cannot understand

  1198. divine revelation.

1199. That calls for a posture

  1200. for us

  1201. of humility,

  1202. of prayerful dependence,

  1203. and gratitude

  1204. toward God.

  1205. We know God

1206. and we can call upon him

  1207. as our Heavenly Father

  1208. not because of our

  1209. superior intelligence

  1210. or superior diligence

  1211. compared to other people

1212. who search for the truth,

  1213. but because God

  1214. in his sovereign grace

1215. has revealed himself to us.

  1216. we cannot persuade

  1217. a single person

  1218. in the world

1219. to trust in Jesus Christ

  1220. and become a follower

  1221. of Christ

  1222. with the sheer force

  1223. of logic or eloquence.

  1224. Not a single one.

  1225. Only supernatural revelation

  1226. !

  1227. makes someone born again

1228. through faith in Jesus Christ.

  1229. And then Jesus

  1230. follows that up

  1231. with this commendation

1232. up with an amazing promise

  1233. in verses 18 to 19.

  1234. And I tell you,

  1235. you are Peter

  1236. and on this rock

1237. I will build my church

1238. and the gates of hell

1239. shall not prevail against it.

1240. I will give you the keys

1241. of the kingdom of heaven

1242. and whatever you bind on earth

1243. shall be bound in heaven

1244. and whatever you lose on earth

1245. shall be loosed in heaven.

  1246. And these two verses

  1247. have been the subject

  1248. of much debate

  1249. throughout church history.

  1250. The Catholic Church

  1251. uses this verse

1252. to justify the Roman papacy,

  1253. the office of Pope,

  1254. and the argument

  1255. goes like this.

  1256. The name

  1257. that Jesus gives

  1258. Simon

  1259. in this passage,

  1260. Peter,

  1261. means rock.

  1262. Immediately after

  1263. renaming Peter,

  1264. I know you've seen

  1265. the name Peter

  1266. before in the Gospels,

  1267. but he's already

  1268. anticipating this event,

  1269. Matthew,

  1270. as he writes.

  1271. Immediately after

  1272. Jesus says,

  1273. I tell you,

  1274. you are Peter,

1275. Jesus goes on to say,

  1276. and on this rock

1277. I will build my church.

1278. Jesus seems to be saying

  1279. that he will build

  1280. the church on Peter.

  1281. Jesus continues

  1282. in verse 19,

  1283. I will give you

1284. the keys of the kingdom

  1285. of heaven

  1286. and whatever you bind

  1287. on earth

1288. shall be bound in heaven

  1289. and whatever you lose

  1290. on earth

1291. shall be loosed in heaven.

  1292. And here,

  1293. that second person

  1294. pronoun,

  1295. you,

  1296. is singular,

  1297. meaning Jesus is speaking

  1298. individually to Peter.

1299. This is what we call

1300. the power of the keys,

  1301. the authority

  1302. to include

  1303. and to exclude

  1304. people from

  1305. church membership

  1306. and by implication

  1307. membership

  1308. in the kingdom

  1309. of heaven itself.

  1310. This is an allusion

  1311. to Isaiah 22,

  1312. 20 to 22,

  1313. where God declares

  1314. that he will make

  1315. Eliakim a steward

  1316. of the kingdom

  1317. of David

  1318. and give him

1319. the key of the house

  1320. of David

1321. so that he shall open

  1322. and none shall shut

  1323. and he shall shut

  1324. and none shall open.

  1325. That prophecy

  1326. is first and foremost

  1327. fulfilled by Jesus himself

  1328. and that's why

  1329. in Revelation 3,

  1330. 7 to 8,

1331. Jesus says to the church

  1332. in Philadelphia,

1333. the words of the Holy One,

  1334. the true one,

1335. who has the key of David,

  1336. who opens

1337. and no one will shut

  1338. and who shuts

  1339. and no one opens.

  1340. I know your works.

  1341. Behold,

1342. I have set before you

  1343. an open door

1344. which no one is able

  1345. to shut.

1346. So Jesus is the ultimate

  1347. and first fulfillment

  1348. of that prophecy.

  1349. He's the one

  1350. who holds ultimately

  1351. the key of David.

  1352. However,

  1353. here Jesus seems

  1354. to be delegating

  1355. that authority

  1356. to Peter.

  1357. Now,

  1358. I agree

  1359. with the Catholics

  1360. that Jesus is speaking

  1361. to Peter here

  1362. and that Peter

  1363. is the rock

1364. that Jesus is speaking of.

  1365. The name Peter,

  1366. I said,

  1367. literally means rock

1368. so it's like Jesus saying,

  1369. Peter,

  1370. sorry,

  1371. not Peter,

  1372. Simon,

  1373. from now on

  1374. your name is Rocky

1375. and I built my church

  1376. on rock,

  1377. on this.

  1378. And so,

  1379. like,

  1380. it comes,

  1381. the logical sequence

1382. is really hard to dispute

  1383. and there's an unmistakable

  1384. reciprocity here too.

  1385. Peter says,

  1386. you are the Christ,

  1387. he declares,

  1388. you are the Christ,

1389. the son of the living God

1390. and then Jesus turns to him

  1391. and says,

  1392. I say,

  1393. you are Peter,

  1394. you are rock.

  1395. Based on that profession

  1396. of faith

  1397. that you just gave,

  1398. I will now build

  1399. my church

  1400. on you.

  1401. So,

  1402. Jesus is,

  1403. according prominent

  1404. authority to Peter

  1405. as the leader

  1406. of the twelve apostles,

1407. he will be the tip

  1408. of the spear,

  1409. to use an analogy,

  1410. as the kingdom

  1411. of heaven advances

  1412. in the book

  1413. of Acts.

  1414. Who is preaching

  1415. the gospel

  1416. of Jesus Christ

  1417. at Pentecost

  1418. when the Holy Spirit

  1419. first falls upon

  1420. the Jews

  1421. in Acts chapter 2?

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1422. Peter.

  1423. When the Samaritans

  1424. first receive

  1425. the word of God,

  1426. whom do the apostles

  1427. of Jerusalem

  1428. send to them

  1429. so that they might

  1430. pray over them

1431. and so that they might

  1432. also receive

  1433. the Holy Spirit?

  1434. Peter

  1435. and John.

  1436. So,

  1437. not just Peter.

1438. When does the Holy Spirit

  1439. first fall upon

  1440. the Gentiles?

  1441. When Peter

  1442. goes to the house

  1443. of Cornelius the Centurion

  1444. and ministers to them

  1445. and preaches

  1446. the gospel to them.

  1447. So,

  1448. I heartily affirm

  1449. that Peter

  1450. is prominent.

  1451. He's the tip

  1452. of the spear.

  1453. He lays the foundation

  1454. of the church

  1455. of Christ.

  1456. With that said,

  1457. I disagree

1458. on a number of points

  1459. decisively

  1460. with the Catholics.

  1461. Yes,

  1462. Peter does have

  1463. a foundational role

1464. but this is a role

  1465. that is given

  1466. not exclusively

  1467. to Peter

  1468. but collectively

  1469. to the twelve apostles

  1470. of Jesus Christ.

  1471. Jesus singles out

  1472. Peter

  1473. because he is

  1474. the representative

  1475. leader

  1476. and the spokesperson

  1477. of the twelve.

  1478. He's the first

  1479. among equals.

  1480. But he's not

  1481. the only one

  1482. who holds this power

  1483. of the key

  1484. and that is precisely

  1485. why the exact

  1486. same power

  1487. of the keys

  1488. is given

  1489. to all

  1490. of the apostles

  1491. and indeed

  1492. to the whole church

  1493. in Matthew 18.

  1494. Speaking of the process

  1495. of church discipline

  1496. and excommunication

  1497. sorry,

  1498. I don't know

  1499. what just happened.

  1500. Jesus says

  1501. in Matthew 18

  1502. 17 to 18

  1503. that if a person

  1504. who claims

  1505. to be a Christian

  1506. and persists

  1507. in sin

  1508. and refuses to repent

  1509. we must confront

  1510. them one on one

  1511. and then if they

  1512. don't listen

  1513. you bring one

  1514. or two others

  1515. with you

  1516. so that

  1517. the testimony

  1518. may be established

  1519. on the testimony

  1520. of two and three

  1521. witnesses

  1522. and then he says

  1523. if they still

  1524. refuse to listen

  1525. we must tell it

  1526. to the church.

  1527. I think I have

  1528. this passage

  1529. to show

  1530. and if he refuses

  1531. to listen

  1532. even to the church

1533. let him be to you

  1534. as a Gentile

  1535. and a tax collector.

1536. Truly I say to you

  1537. whatever you bind

  1538. on earth

  1539. shall be bound

  1540. in heaven.

  1541. Whatever you lose

  1542. on earth

  1543. shall be loosed

  1544. in heaven.

1545. Again I say to you

  1546. if two of you

  1547. agree on earth

  1548. about anything

  1549. they ask

  1550. it will be done

  1551. for them

  1552. by my father

  1553. in heaven.

  1554. It's the same

  1555. power of the keys

  1556. exact same

  1557. wording

  1558. and phrasing

  1559. but this time

  1560. the second person

  1561. pronoun you

  1562. is plural

  1563. because Jesus

  1564. is speaking

  1565. not only to Peter

  1566. who holds

  1567. exclusively

  1568. the power

  1569. of the key

  1570. but because

  1571. all twelve

  1572. apostles of Jesus

  1573. holds the power

  1574. of the key

  1575. and by extension

  1576. they lay the

  1577. foundation of the church

  1578. and the church

  1579. of Christ

  1580. holds the power

  1581. of the key.

  1582. That's why

  1583. in the gathering

  1584. of the church

  1585. we exercise

  1586. church discipline

  1587. together

  1588. to bind

  1589. and to loosen.

  1590. This is why

  1591. Ephesians 2.20

  1592. says that the church

  1593. of Christ

  1594. is built

  1595. on the foundation

  1596. of the apostles

  1597. and prophets.

  1598. This is why

  1599. in Revelation 21.14

  1600. the heavenly Jerusalem

  1601. which represents

  1602. the people of God

  1603. the church of Christ

  1604. is included in that

  1605. it says it has

  1606. twelve foundations

  1607. and on them

  1608. were the twelve

  1609. names of the twelve

  1610. apostles of the land.

  1611. The apostles

  1612. of Jesus Christ

  1613. make up the foundation

  1614. layer of the church

  1615. of Christ

  1616. and every subsequent

  1617. generation builds

  1618. upon that foundation

  1619. and not on another

  1620. foundation

  1621. and that's why

  1622. we speak of

  1623. the apostolic deposit

1624. that we hold on to.

  1625. Nowhere does it say

  1626. in the Bible

  1627. or in Matthew

  1628. anywhere

  1629. that Peter

  1630. was the first

  1631. pope

  1632. or that Peter

  1633. will continue

  1634. to speak

  1635. after his death

  1636. through the bishops

  1637. of Rome.

  1638. Peter's foundation

  1639. laying work

  1640. is already done.

  1641. He does not continue

  1642. to function

  1643. in that way.

  1644. You would think

  1645. that if the bishop

  1646. of Rome

  1647. was intended

  1648. by Christ

  1649. to occupy

  1650. so prominent

  1651. a role

  1652. in the history

  1653. of the church

  1654. that you think

  1655. that Paul

  1656. writing sixteen

  1657. chapters

  1658. in his letter

  1659. to the Romans

  1660. would have something

  1661. to say about it.

  1662. He says nothing.

  1663. And when Peter

  1664. himself

  1665. addresses himself

  1666. to the elders

  1667. that he's writing

  1668. to in 1 Peter 5

    1 Peter 5:1

  1669. verse 1

  1670. he calls himself

  1671. not the bishop

  1672. of bishops

  1673. or the universal bishop

  1674. or the pope.

  1675. No, he says

  1676. I write to you

  1677. as a fellow

  1678. elder.

  1679. It was not

  1680. until the fifth

  1681. century

  1682. when Leo I

  1683. argued that

  1684. the apostle Peter

  1685. continues to speak

  1686. through the bishops

  1687. of Rome

  1688. that the papacy

  1689. as we know it

  1690. came to exist.

  1691. They say that

  1692. pope,

  1693. the popes

  1694. are the vicar

  1695. of Christ,

  1696. the substitute

  1697. of Christ.

  1698. until that point

  1699. of Leo I

  1700. no one ever

  1701. claimed that

  1702. the bishop

  1703. of Rome

  1704. is the bishop

  1705. of bishops,

  1706. the universal bishop.

  1707. Sure, Rome

  1708. was always a

  1709. prominent city.

  1710. It was the

  1711. former imperial

  1712. capital

  1713. and because

  1714. of their

  1715. prominence

  1716. they did

  1717. have some

  1718. preeminence

  1719. and outsized

  1720. influence

  1721. not unlike

  1722. the ways

  1723. sometimes

  1724. large

  1725. flagship churches

  1726. of certain

  1727. denominations

  1728. have outsized

  1729. influence

  1730. and preeminence

  1731. among the

  1732. churches

  1733. that they

  1734. are equal

  1735. to.

  1736. But still

  1737. the bishop

  1738. of Rome

  1739. was still

  1740. one of

  1741. many bishops.

  1742. Sometimes

  1743. Christians

  1744. find the idea

  1745. of having

  1746. a single

  1747. leader,

  1748. a singular

  1749. authority

  1750. as the head

  1751. of the

  1752. church of

  1753. Christ

  1754. appealing.

  1755. They think

  1756. oh then

  1757. maybe we'll

  1758. have more

  1759. unity.

  1760. Maybe

  1761. they can

  1762. ensure

  1763. fidelity

  1764. to biblical

  1765. teaching

  1766. but this

  1767. is

  1768. demonstrably

  1769. false.

  1770. It's like

  1771. saying that

  1772. the United

  1773. States

  1774. of America

  1775. is a

  1776. very

  1777. united

  1778. country

  1779. because

  1780. we only

  1781. have

  1782. one

  1783. president.

  1784. No,

  1785. we are

  1786. as divided

  1787. as ever.

  1788. Ideologically

  1789. and politically

  1790. we're

  1791. splintering

  1792. in every

  1793. direction.

  1794. Governmental

  1795. unity

  1796. does not

  1797. equal

  1798. doctrinal

  1799. unity

  1800. or

  1801. spiritual

  1802. unity.

  1803. I can

  1804. give you

  1805. many

  1806. examples

  1807. of how

  1808. this

  1809. has

  1810. been

  1811. true

  1812. throughout

  1813. history.

  1814. There's

  1815. a book

  1816. called

  1817. Bad

  1818. Popes.

  1819. You guys

  1820. can look

  1821. up and

  1822. read.

  1823. It's a

  1824. scholarly

  1825. book

  1826. that I

  1827. think

  1828. Catholics

  1829. have read

  1830. too

  1831. so they

  1832. know.

  1833. Peter is

  1834. an important

  1835. figure in the

  1836. history of the

  1837. church and I

  1838. affirm that

  1839. without

  1840. reservation

  1841. but this

  1842. passage did

  1843. not begin

  1844. with the

  1845. question

  1846. who is

  1847. Peter?

  1848. No,

  1849. it began

  1850. with the

  1851. question

  1852. who is

  1853. Jesus?

  1854. Who do

  1855. you say

  1856. that I

  1857. am?

  1858. That's the

  1859. more important

  1860. question.

  1861. In verse

  1862. 18,

  1863. Jesus doesn't

  1864. say on

  1865. this rock

  1866. I will

  1867. build

  1868. Peter's

  1869. church.

  1870. No,

  1871. he says

  1872. on this

  1873. rock I

  1874. will build

  1875. my

  1876. church.

  1877. Jesus

  1878. is the

  1879. builder.

  1880. Jesus

  1881. is the

  1882. owner.

  1883. And that's

  1884. why,

  1885. although for

  1886. the sake

  1887. of convenience

  1888. sometimes you

  1889. and I

  1890. will say

  1891. things like,

  1892. oh yeah,

  1893. Trinity

  1894. Cambridge

  1895. Church is

  1896. my

  1897. church.

  1898. By that

  1899. we simply

  1900. mean that

  1901. that's the

  1902. church to

  1903. which we

  1904. belong.

  1905. Not that

  1906. the church

  1907. belongs to

  1908. me.

  1909. No

  1910. pastor on

  1911. earth,

  1912. no bishop

  1913. on earth,

  1914. and no

  1915. pope on

  1916. earth can

  1917. claim this

  1918. is my

  1919. church because

  1920. Jesus declares

  1921. authoritatively

  1922. here,

  1923. this is my

  1924. church.

  1925. church,

  1926. the church

  1927. of Christ.

  1928. Church,

  1929. of course,

  1930. is not

  1931. referring to

  1932. a building.

  1933. It's speaking

  1934. of the

  1935. people of

  1936. God.

  1937. The word

  1938. church in

  1939. Greek means

  1940. congregation,

  1941. a gathering.

  1942. And God

  1943. gives us,

  1944. the church,

  1945. a bracing

  1946. assurance in

  1947. verse 8,

  1948. on this

  1949. rock I

  1950. will build

  1951. my church

  1952. and the

  1953. gates of

  1954. hell shall

  1955. not prevail

  1956. against it.

  1957. I always

  1958. wince a little

  1959. bit when I

  1960. read this

  1961. because it

  1962. doesn't say

  1963. hell in the

  1964. original Greek.

  1965. If you have

  1966. a footnote

  1967. in your

  1968. ESV Bibles,

  1969. you can look

  1970. at the

  1971. footnote and

  1972. it will tell

  1973. you that in

  1974. the Greek,

  1975. it doesn't

  1976. say hell,

  1977. it says

  1978. Hades.

  1979. This is an

  1980. important

  1981. distinction.

  1982. There are

  1983. two very

  1984. different

  1985. places.

  1986. Hell is

  1987. a place

  1988. of final

  1989. punishment,

  1990. what's called

  1991. in the

  1992. Bible the

  1993. second death,

  1994. the lake

  1995. of fire.

  1996. That's where

  1997. Satan,

  1998. the great

  1999. dragon,

  2000. and the

  2001. false prophet,

  2002. and the

  2003. beast,

  2004. they're all

  2005. thrown into

  2006. the lake

  2007. of fire,

  2008. into hell

  2009. later on

  2010. at the final

  2011. judgment.

  2012. According to

  2013. Revelation 20,

    Revelation 20:13–14

  2014. verses 13 to

  2015. 14,

  2016. it's after the

  2017. millennial reign

  2018. of Christ and

  2019. after the final

  2020. defeat of

  2021. Satan that

  2022. God will judge

  2023. the world from

  2024. the great white

  2025. throne.

  2026. It's only at

  2027. that point that

  2028. death and

  2029. Hades yield,

  2030. give up their

  2031. dead,

  2032. and then those

  2033. people are judged

  2034. and they're

  2035. punished in

  2036. hell in the

  2037. lake of fire.

  2038. So right now,

  2039. there's no

  2040. occupant in

  2041. hell.

  2042. So Jesus is

  2043. not speaking

  2044. of hell.

  2045. He's speaking

  2046. of Hades.

  2047. The gates

  2048. of Hades

  2049. will not

  2050. prevail against

  2051. it.

  2052. What is

  2053. Hades?

  2054. That's very

  2055. interesting.

  2056. Hades is a

  2057. dark place.

  2058. It's the

  2059. underworld.

  2060. It's described

  2061. as the pit

  2062. sometimes,

  2063. the pit of

  2064. darkness.

  2065. It is,

  2066. the Old

  2067. Testament equivalent

  2068. of the Greek

  2069. word for

  2070. Hades is

  2071. Sheol,

  2072. which I'm

  2073. sure you've

  2074. seen many

  2075. times in

  2076. the Bible.

  2077. Sheol is a

  2078. deep place.

  2079. Isaiah 38

  2080. 10 describes

  2081. the gates

  2082. of Sheol

  2083. as a

  2084. gate,

  2085. gates from

  2086. which no

  2087. captive ever

  2088. escaped.

  2089. It's like

  2090. Moronon,

  2091. the black

  2092. gates of

  2093. Mordor in

  2094. Lord of

  2095. the Rings.

  2096. It says

  2097. in Job

  2098. 7,

  2099. 9,

  2100. he who

  2101. goes down

  2102. to Sheol

  2103. does not

  2104. come up.

  2105. So how

  2106. can the

  2107. church of

  2108. Christ

  2109. prevail

  2110. against the

  2111. gates of

  2112. Hades,

  2113. against the

  2114. powers of

  2115. death?

  2116. That's been

  2117. the lament

  2118. of the

  2119. psalmists

  2120. in the

  2121. Old

  2122. Testament.

  2123. In

  2124. Psalm 89,

    Psalms 89:48–49

  2125. verse 48

  2126. to 49,

  2127. there's this

  2128. lament.

  2129. Who can

  2130. deliver his

  2131. soul from

  2132. the power

  2133. of Sheol?

  2134. Lord,

  2135. where is

  2136. your steadfast

  2137. love of

  2138. old,

  2139. which by

  2140. your

  2141. faithfulness

  2142. you

  2143. swore to

  2144. David?

  2145. There's this

  2146. faith,

  2147. this belief

  2148. in the Old

  2149. Testament,

  2150. among the Old

  2151. Testament states,

  2152. that only God

  2153. can deliver

  2154. from Sheol.

  2155. Because God

  2156. says in 1

  2157. Samuel 2,

  2158. 6,

  2159. the Lord

  2160. kills and

  2161. brings to

  2162. life.

  2163. He brings

  2164. down to

  2165. Sheol and

  2166. he raises

  2167. up.

  2168. And yet,

  2169. God was not

  2170. raising up the

  2171. dead from

  2172. Sheol.

  2173. And so they

  2174. lament

  2175. throughout the

  2176. Psalms,

  2177. how long,

  2178. O Lord,

  2179. when will

  2180. you finally

  2181. raise the

  2182. people from

  2183. Sheol and

  2184. from death?

  2185. death.

  2186. And that's

  2187. fulfilled in

  2188. Jesus Christ

  2189. when he

  2190. comes.

  2191. Because the

  2192. wages of

  2193. sin is

  2194. death.

  2195. Why does

  2196. death reign?

  2197. Why does

  2198. Hades reign?

  2199. Because of

  2200. sin.

  2201. And so when

  2202. Jesus dies

  2203. on the cross

  2204. to make

  2205. atonement for

  2206. the sins

  2207. of his

  2208. people,

  2209. and when he

  2210. does away

  2211. and fulfills

  2212. the punishment,

  2213. the penalty

  2214. that is due,

  2215. and absorbs

  2216. the wrath of

  2217. God in

  2218. our place,

  2219. Hades no

  2220. longer has

  2221. any claim

  2222. upon the

  2223. people of

  2224. God.

  2225. And so

  2226. the gates

  2227. of Hades

  2228. will not

  2229. prevail

  2230. against

  2231. the church

  2232. of Christ.

  2233. Sometimes

  2234. people

  2235. misunderstand

  2236. this.

  2237. They think,

  2238. oh,

  2239. like the

  2240. gates of

  2241. Hades

  2242. are like

  2243. demons,

  2244. you know,

  2245. attacking us

  2246. and assailing

  2247. us and

  2248. surrounding us

  2249. and we're

  2250. like hunkered

  2251. down in a

  2252. bunker somewhere

  2253. and we're

  2254. just trying

  2255. to wait

  2256. it out

  2257. and patiently

  2258. endure.

  2259. That's what

  2260. it means.

  2261. You know,

  2262. we're not

  2263. going to be

  2264. broken in.

  2265. We're going

  2266. to endure.

  2267. We're going

  2268. to make

  2269. it.

  2270. No,

  2271. that's not

  2272. the image

  2273. here.

  2274. What's the

  2275. function of

  2276. a gate?

  2277. It's to keep

  2278. people out,

  2279. to protect

  2280. something.

  2281. The kingdom

  2282. of heaven

  2283. is not

  2284. described in

  2285. defensive terms

  2286. in the

  2287. gospels.

  2288. It is

  2289. described in

  2290. the offensive

  2291. terms.

  2292. Jesus is

  2293. the one

  2294. who comes

  2295. and binds

  2296. the strong

  2297. man so

  2298. that he

  2299. can plunder

  2300. his treasure

  2301. and take

  2302. them away.

  2303. That's why

  2304. it says

  2305. in Genesis

  2306. 22,

  2307. 17 to 18,

  2308. and your

  2309. offspring,

  2310. this is the

  2311. promise God

  2312. had given

  2313. to Abraham,

  2314. and your

  2315. offspring shall

  2316. possess the

  2317. gate of his

  2318. enemies,

  2319. and in your

  2320. offspring shall

  2321. all the nations

  2322. of the earth

  2323. be blessed.

  2324. Christ.

  2325. This is

  2326. fulfilled

  2327. ultimately

  2328. in Jesus

  2329. Christ.

  2330. So no,

  2331. saints of

  2332. God,

  2333. you are not

  2334. hunkered down

  2335. in the bunker

  2336. just trying to

  2337. weather the

  2338. storm of the

  2339. enemy's attacks.

  2340. We have the

  2341. battering ram

  2342. of the gospel.

  2343. We are the

  2344. ones storming

  2345. the gates of

  2346. Hades,

  2347. and we batter

  2348. it with the

  2349. gospel,

  2350. and we declare

  2351. the gospel of

  2352. truth,

  2353. and when people

  2354. believe in the

  2355. gospel of Jesus

  2356. Christ,

  2357. Jesus said in

  2358. John 5,

  2359. 25,

  2360. the hour is

  2361. coming and

  2362. is now here

  2363. when the

  2364. dead will

  2365. hear the

  2366. voice of

  2367. the Son

  2368. of God,

  2369. and those

  2370. who hear

  2371. will live.

  2372. That's what

  2373. we do.

  2374. But as we

  2375. do that,

  2376. as we share

  2377. the gospel,

  2378. when we see

  2379. Jesus'

  2380. warning,

  2381. I know the

  2382. second part of

  2383. my sermon,

  2384. I titled it

  2385. Sharing the

  2386. Bread of

  2387. Life,

  2388. and you

  2389. might be

  2390. wondering,

  2391. okay,

  2392. well,

  2393. at the end

  2394. of this

  2395. passage,

  2396. Jesus literally

  2397. says in

  2398. verse 20,

  2399. he strictly

  2400. charges the

  2401. disciples to

  2402. tell no one

  2403. that he was

  2404. the Christ,

  2405. so how in

  2406. the world

  2407. do you get

  2408. the main

  2409. idea that

  2410. you're supposed

  2411. to share

  2412. this with

  2413. everybody?

  2414. Well,

  2415. that's because

  2416. of where we

  2417. are in

  2418. relation to

  2419. the cross.

  2420. The

  2421. disciples have

  2422. not yet seen

  2423. the cross,

  2424. the death,

  2425. and the

  2426. resurrection of

  2427. Christ.

  2428. We live on

  2429. the other

  2430. side of it.

  2431. Jesus tells

  2432. the disciples

  2433. not to tell

  2434. people that

  2435. he's the

  2436. Christ yet

  2437. because it's

  2438. so easy to

  2439. misunderstand the

  2440. role and nature

  2441. of his

  2442. messianic mission

  2443. that Jesus

  2444. came to

  2445. conquer.

  2446. Yes,

  2447. he did.

  2448. He's the

  2449. king.

  2450. He has come

  2451. to conquer,

  2452. but how does

  2453. he conquer?

  2454. We saw it in

  2455. the book of

  2456. Revelation very

  2457. clearly.

  2458. He conquers

  2459. by becoming

  2460. the slain

  2461. lamb of

  2462. God,

  2463. by dying

  2464. on the

  2465. cross.

  2466. So how

  2467. do we

  2468. conquer?

  2469. How do we

  2470. prevail against

  2471. the gates

  2472. of Hades?

  2473. Same thing.

  2474. We bear

  2475. suffering

  2476. witness to

  2477. Jesus Christ.

  2478. We die

  2479. as martyrs

  2480. for the sake

  2481. of Jesus

  2482. Christ,

  2483. and we

  2484. declare it

  2485. as we

  2486. suffer,

  2487. and as we

  2488. do this

  2489. as in the

  2490. following in

  2491. the footsteps

  2492. of Jesus,

  2493. that's when

  2494. the gates

  2495. of Hades

  2496. fling open,

  2497. and the

  2498. dead hear

  2499. the voice

  2500. of their

  2501. Lord,

  2502. Jesus Christ,

  2503. and come

  2504. to live.

  2505. Let's

  2506. pray.

  2507. Heavenly

  2508. Father,

  2509. grant us

  2510. faith.

  2511. Lord,

  2512. rally us

  2513. as your

  2514. troops.

  2515. Strengthen

  2516. our hands

  2517. that we

  2518. can boldly

  2519. declare

  2520. the gospel

  2521. of Jesus

  2522. Christ

  2523. that makes

  2524. the dead

  2525. live.

  2526. And Lord,

  2527. fill us

  2528. with fresh

  2529. gratitude

  2530. and worship

  2531. as we

  2532. remember

  2533. that you've

  2534. taken us

  2535. from death

  2536. to life.

  2537. We had

  2538. no way

  2539. of getting

  2540. out of

  2541. through that

  2542. gate of

  2543. Hades,

  2544. but you

  2545. did it,

  2546. Lord Jesus.

  2547. Christ,

  2548. you did

  2549. it.

  2550. And for

  2551. that you

  2552. deserve all

  2553. glory and

  2554. honor and

  2555. praise.

  2556. It's in your

  2557. precious name,

  2558. Jesus,

  2559. we pray.

  2560. Amen.

  2561. Amen.

  2562. Thank you.
