  1. Good morning, everyone. It's great to gather with you to worship. Please turn with me in your

  2. ! Bibles to Matthew chapter 17. If you're visiting, my name is Sean. I'm one of the pastors of Trinity

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  3. ! Cambridge Church. It's my great joy and honor to preach God's Word to you this morning. If you don't

  4. have a Bible, you can raise your hand. We'll give you a copy that you can have. We need one over here.

  5. David, thank you for getting that. I was texting with Pastor Kyle Huber, who preached at one of

  6. our retreats a couple years ago. He told me that I think they're not meeting because they're in New

  7. Jersey. They're snowed out and they canceled. He said, you're probably the only Sovereign Grace

  8. Church that's having service this morning east of New Mexico and north of Florida.

  9. But hey, they canceled our rental permit, but we didn't know. We showed up this morning. The

  10. custodian wasn't there. And we called him and he came and opened the door for us. He didn't know

  11. that it was canceled either. So praise God. So he's letting us meet. They changed at last minute

  12. because the first email was saying that only after 1 p.m. permits are canceled, but now everything is

  13. canceled. But here we are. So they're letting us meet graciously. I'm so grateful to God for that.

  14. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word. Heavenly Father, we are here

  15. because you have the words of eternal life and there is no one else to whom we can turn.

  16. Lord, we are here because salvation is found in Christ, in Jesus alone. And we are here to behold

  17. him. So Lord, exalt your name and exalt your son. Fix our eyes on him as we pay attention and listen

  18. to your word. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Please stand if you are able to honor God as I read from

  19. Matthew 17, 1 through 13.

  20. And after six days, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, his brother,

  21. and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them. And his face

  22. shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses

  23. and Elijah talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good that we are here.

  24. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.

  25. He was still speaking when behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them and a voice from the cloud said,

  26. this is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.

  27. When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.

  28. But Jesus came and touched them saying, rise and have no fear. And when they lifted up their eyes,

  29. they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them,

  30. tell no one the vision until the son of man is raised from the dead. And the disciples asked him,

  31. then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come? He answered, Elijah does come and he will

  32. restore all things. But I tell you that Elijah has already come and they did not recognize him,

  33. but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the son of man will certainly suffer at their hands.

  34. Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist. This is God's holy and

  35. authoritative word. Please be seated. There's a popular class of YouTube videos that often go viral.

  36. And it's the kind where someone who is very famous and talented in something goes undercover to surprise

  37. people. Do you know the, I mean, sure you know the kind of videos I'm talking about. The all NBA,

  38. all-star point guard, you know, gets professional makeup done to look like an 80-year-old grandpa.

  39. And then he goes to some basketball court in Chicago and then jukes and dunks on all the street

  40. ballers, you know. And a Grammy-winning singer disguises herself as a homey accountant.

  41. And then she goes into a karaoke bar and starts singing all of her own songs to the amazement of

  42. all the people at the bar, you know. Or an elite power lifter who, I was talking about with this

  43. Aubrey the other day, an elite power lifter who goes undercover as a janitor at a gym.

  44. And then, and then proceeds to outlift every hulking gym bro in the gym.

  45. And at the end, there's a great reveal and cheers all around as people stand in awe and get autographs

  46. and take selfies with these people. I think this kind of video appeals to people for a number of

  47. reasons, but a main one certainly is that, that element of surprise and satisfaction that you get

  48. when a celebrity's true talent and identity is recognized in a genuine unscripted encounter.

  49. There's a sense of validation and vindication.

  50. The transfiguration of Jesus we see in Matthew 17 is kind of like that.

  51. Jesus walked this earth as a son of man.

  52. Isaiah 53 said that there is no beauty or majesty to attract us to him in his earthly appearance.

  53. And that wasn't a disguise, of course. Jesus really took on human flesh.

  54. But nonetheless, by emptying himself and taking the form of a servant, being found in human form,

  55. as it says in Philippians 2, Jesus' divine glory was veiled from those around him.

  56. This is why shortly before his death, resurrection, and ascension, Jesus prays in John 17, verse 5,

    John 17:5

  57. Now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

  58. That eternal glory of the Son of God was veiled during his life and ministry here on earth.

  59. And that's partly why so many people did not recognize him.

  60. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.

  61. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

  62. John 1, 10.

  63. In the preceding passage, Jesus declared to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem

  64. and suffer many things from the elders and the chief priests and scribes and be killed,

  65. and on the third day be raised.

  66. And that prediction flew in the face of all Jewish first century messianic expectations.

  67. The Messiah was supposed to come and conquer.

  68. He was supposed to come and judge.

  69. He was supposed to come and rule.

  70. He was supposed to overthrow the Roman oppressors and restore Israel to its dynastic glory.

  71. Trying to get Jesus' disciples to understand this aspect of Christ's mission was like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

  72. They couldn't wrap their minds right.

  73. So much so, as we saw in last week's passage that Ed preached on, Peter even rebuked Jesus.

  74. Jesus, stop with this nonsense.

  75. Far be from you.

  76. This will never happen to you.

  77. What are you talking about?

  78. You're the Christ.

  79. You just told me I was right.

  80. You're the Christ, the son of the living God.

  81. How can you go suffer at the hands of the chief priests and the scribes?

  82. And how can you die?

  83. Remember what you told me?

  84. On this rock, I will build my church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

  85. You and me, that's us.

  86. We're going all the way.

  87. Nothing can stop us.

  88. And then Jesus splashes cold water in Peter's face, proverbially speaking, to wake him up from his Satan-inspired delusions.

  89. Get behind me, Satan.

  90. You are a hindrance to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.

  91. This would have caused much confusion and consternation.

  92. How can the glorious son of God suffer and die?

  93. It's impossible.

  94. It's not supposed to happen.

  95. A suffering son of man cannot be the glorious son of God.

  96. Or can he?

  97. As doubt and insecurity creep into the minds of the disciples, God peels back the veil

  98. and reveals the radiance of Christ's divine glory.

  99. And as Christ is transfigured before the eyes of Peter, James, and John,

  100. he is validated and he is vindicated as the son of God.

  101. This is who he is, no matter what happens to him in the coming days.

  102. And that's the main point of this passage.

  103. The suffering son of man is the glorious son of God to whom we should listen.

  104. I'm going to first talk about the glorious son of God in verses 1 to 8.

  105. And then secondly, I'll talk about the suffering son of man in verses 9 to 13.

  106. But I'm going to give most of my time to that first eight verses.

  107. Verse 1 begins,

  108. As Ed noted last week, in all three of the synoptic gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke,

  109. the transfiguration of Jesus occurs right on the heels of Peter's confession

  110. and Jesus' prediction of his suffering and death and resurrection.

  111. So the phrase, after six days, intentionally ties the transfiguration

  112. back to that pronouncement by Jesus.

  113. The transfiguration in this way serves as a foretaste of,

  114. foretaste of the fulfillment of the coming of the kingdom of God in power

  115. after Jesus' death and resurrection and ascension.

  116. In Luke 19, 12, Jesus tells a parable that's meant to be a corrective to people

  117. who suppose that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.

  118. Jesus says to them,

  119. A noble man went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.

  120. Jesus speaking of himself.

  121. He's going to go into a far country.

  122. He's going to die.

  123. He's going to be raised.

  124. He's going to ascend to the right hand of the Father.

  125. And he's going to be that son of man in Daniel 7, 13, 14,

  126. approach to God, the ancient of days,

  127. and receive from him eternal dominion and authority and a kingdom.

  128. That's when the son of man comes into his kingdom

  129. and the kingdom comes in power.

  130. And this is why immediately before he is crucified,

  131. Jesus says this in Matthew 26, 64,

  132. from now on you will see the son of man seated at the right hand of power

  133. and coming on the clouds of heaven.

  134. So that's the fulfillment,

  135. but the transfiguration is a foretaste and a preview of that coming reality.

  136. It's like a movie trailer.

  137. It's not the full thing,

  138. but it's made up of the real thing.

  139. It's a glimpse of the real thing.

  140. Verse 1 continues,

  141. And after six days,

  142. Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, his brother,

  143. and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

  144. Jesus usually travels everywhere with his 12 apostles,

  145. but there are especially intimate occasions

  146. when he takes only his inner circle of Peter, James, and John.

  147. For example, three occasions are noted in the Synoptic Gospels

  148. when he is raising up Jairus' daughter from the dead.

  149. He only has with him Peter, James, and John.

  150. When he goes into the Garden of Gethsemane

  151. and leaves the rest of the apostles there to go in further

  152. to pray and agonize before God,

  153. he only takes with him Peter, James, and John.

  154. And so likewise, here at the transfiguration,

  155. it's only Peter, James, and John who get to behold this vision.

  156. And why these three in particular?

  157. It doesn't say,

  158. but they are each crucial foundational building blocks

  159. of the church of Christ.

  160. Peter, as we talked about a few weeks ago,

  161. is the leader among the apostles.

  162. He's the tip of the spear.

  163. He's the one, he's the rock on whom Jesus said,

  164. I will build my church.

  165. James is the first of the 12 apostles

  166. to be martyred in Acts chapter 12, verse 1.

    Acts 12:1

  167. And John is the beloved disciple

  168. who wrote the last gospel, the gospel of John,

  169. and the last book of the Bible, the Revelation.

  170. He is known as the apostle of love and light

  171. because those themes of love and light

  172. dominate his letters and all of his writings.

  173. And they're prominent themes,

  174. more prominent in John's writings

  175. than any other New Testament authors.

  176. It's these three that go along with Jesus

  177. up a high mountain by themselves.

  178. And I think having three of them is no accident

  179. because according to biblical Old Testament criteria,

  180. a charge may be established only on the testimony

  181. of two or three witnesses, Deuteronomy 17, 6.

  182. So three is in one sense the minimal number

  183. of witnesses that is required

  184. to give credible testimony regarding the transfiguration

  185. of Jesus and his identity as the son of God.

  186. So recounting this event later in 2 Peter 1, 16 to 18,

  187. Peter writes,

  188. For we did not follow cleverly devised myths

  189. when we made known to you the power

  190. and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  191. But we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

  192. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father

  193. and the voice was born to him by the majestic glory,

  194. this is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased.

  195. We ourselves heard this very voice born from heaven

  196. for we were with him on the holy mountain.

  197. So there needed to be three

  198. to bear witness to who Jesus is, his identity.

  199. And what is this holy mountain

  200. where the transfiguration takes place?

  201. Mountains are often the place of divine revelation,

  202. divine encounter in scripture.

  203. The high mountains function in some ways

  204. as a halfway point, a bridge between heaven and earth.

  205. In fact, you could write and trace

  206. almost the entire redemptive history

  207. from just looking at what happens on mountains in scripture.

  208. The first creation, the Garden of Eden,

  209. was on a mountain.

  210. Genesis doesn't tell us that,

  211. but Ezekiel 28, 13 to 14 does.

  212. It says that Eden, the Garden of God,

  213. was on the holy mountain of God.

  214. And then after humanity's fall

  215. and after their utter depravity,

  216. God judges the earth with a flood covering it.

  217. And after the floodwaters subside

  218. and new creation is born,

  219. and where is that new creation born?

  220. On the mountain,

  221. mountain of Ararat.

  222. And of course, one of the most famous mountains,

  223. Mount Horeb,

  224. which is frequently called the Mountain of God

  225. and known, better known as Mount Sinai,

  226. the two probably just refer to the same.

  227. Sinai might refer to the region

  228. because there is also called Wilderness of Sinai.

  229. And maybe Horeb is the peak in a similar way.

  230. Mount Everest is the peak within the Himalayas.

  231. It was at Horeb that God appeared to Moses

  232. in the burning bush in Exodus 3.

  233. It was in Horeb that God,

  234. that descended in the cloud of smoke

  235. and fire and thunder and lightning and earthquake

  236. in Exodus 19 to 24

  237. to give to Israelites the Ten Commandments.

  238. It was at Horeb that Moses, Aaron, and Nadab, and Abihu,

  239. and the 70 elders of Israel

  240. ascended at least partway up Mount Horeb in Exodus

  241. to behold God

  242. and to eat with Him.

  243. It was from Horeb that God declared His name

  244. and passed before Moses

  245. declaiming the Lord, the Lord,

  246. the compassionate and gracious God,

  247. slow to anger and abounding

  248. in steadfast love and faithfulness.

  249. Exodus 34.

  250. Similarly, it was at Horeb in 1 Kings 19

  251. when after confronting the prophets of Baal

  252. and defeating them in a spectacular showdown,

  253. Elijah flees Jezebel,

  254. who is trying to kill him.

  255. He ends up at Mount Horeb

  256. where the Lord God meets with Elijah

  257. and speaks to him.

  258. And similar to how Moses took up Aaron,

  259. and Nadab, and Abihu up Mount Horeb

  260. to see God,

  261. here Jesus takes Peter, James, and John

  262. up a high mountain

  263. to behold the divine glory of the Son.

  264. And it says in verse 2

  265. that Jesus was transfigured before them

  266. and His face shone like the sun

  267. and His clothes became white as light.

  268. Only heavenly beings are described

  269. in such a manner.

  270. Only those who are in the presence of God Himself

  271. in His throne room.

  272. At Jesus' resurrection and ascension,

  273. angelic beings appear

  274. and they are described in Matthew 28 verse 3

    Matthew 28:3

  275. as having an appearance like lightning

  276. and His clothing white as snow.

  277. This is the glory that prophet Daniel saw

  278. in his vision of the Son of Man.

  279. In Daniel chapter 10 verse 5 to 6,

    Daniel 10:5–6

  280. This man was clothed in linen.

  281. His body was like beryl.

  282. His face like the appearance of lightning.

  283. His eyes like flaming torches.

  284. Try to imagine that for a moment.

  285. Jesus is transfigured before your very eyes.

  286. His face shines like the sun.

  287. Imagine that brilliance.

  288. People say that a tiny piece of the sun

  289. the size of a thumbnail

  290. is brighter,

  291. is as bright as a million candles

  292. shining at once.

  293. We can't even stare at the sun

  294. without its brilliant light

  295. burning our retina.

  296. The sun is the brightest thing

  297. people see day after day.

  298. The only thing brighter than the sun

  299. is lightning.

  300. The face of Jesus

  301. when it shines with divine glory

  302. is compared to both the sun

  303. and the lightning

  304. in the scriptures

  305. because they're the brightest things

  306. known to human experience.

  307. And what is this supposed to reveal

  308. about Jesus?

  309. What Peter declared earlier on?

  310. That he is the Christ,

  311. the Son of God.

  312. Because God is described

  313. in Psalm 104 verse 2

    Psalms 104:2

  314. as covering himself with light,

  315. as with a garment.

  316. Because as 1 Timothy 6.16 says,

  317. God dwells in unapproachable light.

  318. 1 John 1.5,

  319. God is light

  320. and in him is no darkness at all.

  321. These descriptions capture

  322. the perfect holiness

  323. and radiance of God.

  324. In God there is no imperfection,

  325. no blemish,

  326. no evil,

  327. no sin.

  328. Even in the brightest

  329. and sunniest places on earth

  330. in the world

  331. there are lurking shadows.

  332. There are dark,

  333. there's darkness everywhere we go

  334. but in God there is no such thing.

  335. He is the Father of lights

  336. with whom there is no variation

  337. or shadow due to change.

  338. Can you imagine such perfection?

  339. Can you imagine such beauty?

  340. All that is good

  341. and beautiful in this world

  342. are but dim reflections

  343. of the glory of God.

  344. Even the most transcendent

  345. of arts and music

  346. do not attain perfection.

  347. Perfection eludes

  348. all of our human endeavors.

  349. But God is perfection.

  350. What is it like

  351. to behold such beauty?

  352. Jonathan Edwards

  353. reflecting on God's glory

  354. and beauty wrote this.

  355. For as God

  356. is infinitely

  357. the greatest being

  358. so he is allowed

  359. to be infinitely

  360. the most beautiful

  361. and excellent.

  362. And all the beauty

  363. to be found

  364. throughout the whole creation

  365. is but the reflection

  366. of the diffused beams

  367. of that being

  368. who hath an infinite fullness

  369. of brightness and glory.

  370. God is the foundation

  371. and fountain

  372. of all being

  373. and all beauty.

  374. Isn't this our

  375. dearest hope?

  376. Blessed are the pure in heart

  377. for they shall see God.

  378. Now

  379. it says in 1 Corinthians 13

  380. we see in a mirror dimly

  381. but then

  382. face to face

  383. now I know in part

  384. but then

  385. I shall know fully

  386. even as I have

  387. been fully known.

  388. Imagine that.

  389. Knowing God

  390. fully

  391. as you have been

  392. fully known

  393. by God himself.

  394. One day

  395. we shall be

  396. like him

  397. because we shall

  398. see him

  399. as he

  400. is.

  401. It says in

  402. 1 John 3

  403. 2.

  404. Isn't that

  405. our dearest hope?

  406. Isn't the dearest hope

  407. of the beloved

  408. to behold

  409. the lover?

  410. One thing

  411. have I asked

  412. of the Lord

  413. and this

  414. I will seek

  415. after

  416. to dwell

  417. in the house

  418. of the Lord

  419. all the days

  420. of my life

  421. and to gaze

  422. upon the beauty

  423. of the Lord

  424. and to inquire

  425. in his temple.

  426. Peter,

  427. James,

  428. and John

  429. have the privilege

  430. of beholding

  431. Jesus face

  432. to face

  433. in his

  434. divine glory.

  435. But as they

  436. behold Jesus

  437. they are

  438. distracted

  439. by the presence

  440. of two

  441. prominent

  442. individuals

  443. from the Old Testament.

  444. Moses and Elijah

  445. who are talking

  446. with Jesus.

  447. I think there are

  448. several reasons

  449. why Moses and Elijah

  450. in particular

  451. show up here.

  452. Many people have said

  453. Moses represents

  454. the law.

  455. Elijah represents

  456. the prophets

  457. and that together

  458. the law

  459. and the prophets

  460. and therefore

  461. their coming down

  462. now is a visual

  463. representation

  464. of what Jesus

  465. taught in Matthew

  466. 5.17

  467. that he is the one

  468. who fulfills

  469. the law

  470. and the prophets.

  471. That's certainly

  472. possible.

  473. I think there's

  474. maybe even more

  475. immediate reasons

  476. contextually.

  477. First,

  478. both Moses

  479. and Elijah

  480. were closely

  481. associated

  482. with Jewish

  483. messianic

  484. expectations.

  485. We already know

  486. from Matthew 16.14

  487. that the crowds

  488. were speculating

  489. that Jesus

  490. might be Elijah

  491. or he might be

  492. one of the prophets.

  493. Since Malachi 4.5

  494. prophesied

  495. that Elijah

  496. would come

  497. before the coming

  498. of God,

  499. they expected,

  500. they waited

  501. for an Elijah.

  502. Similarly,

  503. Deuteronomy 18.15

  504. prophesied

  505. that God

  506. would raise up

  507. for his people

  508. a prophet

  509. like Moses.

  510. So again,

  511. they were expecting

  512. someone like Moses

  513. to come again.

  514. And the fact

  515. that both

  516. Moses and Elijah

  517. met supernatural

  518. ends

  519. fueled this

  520. messianic

  521. fervor

  522. because Elijah,

  523. as you remember,

  524. did not die.

  525. He was carried

  526. up to heaven

  527. in a whirlwind

  528. in chariots

  529. of fire,

  530. 2 Kings 2.11.

  531. And Moses,

  532. likewise,

  533. even though he did

  534. die,

  535. it says in Deuteronomy

  536. 34.6,

  537. it says that

  538. God himself

  539. buried him

  540. so that no man

  541. knows where he

  542. was buried.

  543. So it is no

  544. coincidence that

  545. these two figures

  546. in particular

  547. appear in light

  548. of these messianic

  549. expectations.

  550. And secondly,

  551. both Moses

  552. and Elijah

  553. are individuals

  554. in the Old Testament

  555. who came

  556. tantalizingly close

  557. to seeing God

  558. in the Old Testament.

  559. They are the only

  560. two individuals

  561. of whom it is said

  562. in the Old Testament

  563. that the Lord

  564. God personally

  565. passed by

  566. in front of them

  567. to reveal himself.

  568. In Exodus 33-34

  569. at Mount Horeb,

  570. God put Moses

  571. in the cleft

  572. of a rock

  573. and then covered

  574. him so that

  575. he cannot see

  576. his face

  577. lest he die.

  578. And then he

  579. passed before him

  580. so that Moses

  581. could see his back.

  582. And then when

  583. Moses saw

  584. God's back,

  585. he fell face

  586. down on the ground

  587. and worshipped him.

  588. Similarly,

  589. in 1 Kings 19,

  590. again,

  591. at Mount Horeb,

  592. God told Elijah

  593. to stand

  594. on the mount

  595. before the Lord

  596. and then God

  597. proceeded to pass

  598. by him.

  599. But he says repeatedly

  600. that Elijah did not

  601. see God.

  602. He only heard

  603. his voice.

  604. And when he hears

  605. God's voice,

  606. Elijah's response

  607. is similar to Moses.

  608. He wraps his face

  609. with his cloak

  610. so as not to see

  611. God.

  612. God.

  613. And God,

  614. in his grace,

  615. reveals to Moses

  616. and Elijah

  617. in this instance

  618. at the transfiguration

  619. what they did not

  620. get to behold

  621. during their life

  622. on earth.

  623. Again,

  624. on a holy mountain,

  625. they get to behold

  626. the glory of God

  627. in the face

  628. of Jesus Christ.

  629. Christ.

  630. But Peter,

  631. as he has a tendency

  632. to do,

  633. puts his foot

  634. in his mouth.

  635. Verse 4,

  636. Lord,

  637. it is good

  638. that we are here.

  639. If you wish,

  640. I will make

  641. three tents here,

  642. one for you

  643. and one for Moses

  644. and one for Elijah.

  645. In their accounts

  646. of the transfiguration,

  647. Mark and Luke

  648. explicitly comment

  649. that Peter

  650. did not know

  651. what he was saying.

  652. He's confused.

  653. He says in Mark 9, 6,

  654. he did not know

  655. what to say

  656. for they were terrified.

  657. Awestruck,

  658. flat-footed,

  659. Peter awkwardly tries

  660. to make himself useful.

  661. It's a simple,

  662. hospitable gesture

  663. to extend

  664. the stay of the guests.

  665. Whoa,

  666. some really important

  667. people are here.

  668. How can we extend

  669. this a little longer?

  670. It's good for us

  671. to be here.

  672. Let's linger a little while.

  673. Let's make some tents.

  674. I could do that.

  675. I'm a fisherman,

  676. but I know how to do that.

  677. The import of

  678. what he's saying

  679. escapes him

  680. because the word tent

  681. is the same word

  682. that is translated

  683. in the Greek translation

  684. of the Old Testament

  685. as tabernacle.

  686. So Peter,

  687. Peter's offer,

  688. he recalls

  689. the feast

  690. of the tabernacle,

  691. which recalls

  692. how God's people

  693. dwelled in tents

  694. during their time

  695. in the wilderness

  696. and how they built

  697. for God himself

  698. a tabernacle

  699. to dwell in,

  700. the tent of meeting

  701. where they met

  702. with God.

  703. So Peter is trying

  704. to honor these

  705. esteemed guests

  706. by making three tents.

  707. However,

  708. this well-meaning gesture

  709. is very misguided.

  710. It's so misguided

  711. that while Peter

  712. is still talking,

  713. he says,

  714. in verse five,

  715. God interrupts him.

  716. Hold it.

  717. when behold,

  718. a bright cloud

  719. overshadowed them

  720. and a voice

  721. from the cloud said,

  722. this is my beloved son

  723. with whom I am well pleased.

  724. Listen to him.

  725. While Peter

  726. is entertaining

  727. the thought

  728. of honoring

  729. the three esteemed men

  730. with tents,

  731. God the Father

  732. stops him

  733. right in his tracks

  734. and then with his voice

  735. puts a bright

  736. neon sign arrow

  737. pointing to Jesus

  738. only and says,

  739. this is my beloved son

  740. with whom I am well pleased.

  741. Listen to him.

  742. This is reminiscent

  743. of Jesus' baptism

  744. when he was baptized

  745. in chapter three.

  746. The spirit of God

  747. descends upon him

  748. like a dove

  749. and the father

  750. cries out from heaven

  751. saying,

  752. this is my beloved son

  753. with whom I am well pleased.

  754. We saw all three persons

  755. of the Trinity

  756. there at Jesus' baptism

  757. and we see the same thing

  758. in our passage this morning.

  759. God the Father speaks

  760. from the cloud of glory,

  761. his delight over his son.

  762. God the son

  763. is transfigured

  764. to reveal his divine glory

  765. and God the spirit

  766. appears in the form

  767. of this numinous cloud.

  768. Look at how this cloud

  769. is described in verse six.

  770. Behold,

  771. a bright cloud

  772. overshadowed them.

  773. That's a rare word

  774. in the New Testament,

  775. overshadow.

  776. It's used in the gospels

  777. to describe the transfiguration

  778. only with one exception,

  779. Luke 135,

  780. where the angel Gabriel

  781. announces to Mary,

  782. the Holy Spirit

  783. shall come upon you

  784. and the power

  785. of the Most High

  786. will overshadow you.

  787. Therefore,

  788. the child to be born

  789. will be called

  790. the Son of God.

  791. Overshadowing

  792. in the gospels

  793. is what the Holy Spirit does.

  794. It is no surprise

  795. in that the ancient

  796. Greek translation

  797. of Exodus 40, 35,

  798. which describes

  799. the cloud of God's presence,

  800. the glory of God

  801. filling the tabernacle,

  802. the tenth of meeting,

  803. it uses the exact same

  804. Greek word

  805. to say that the cloud

  806. overshadowed the temple,

  807. the tabernacle.

  808. This is what

  809. later Jewish theology

  810. called the Shekinah glory,

  811. the dwelling

  812. of the visible glory of God.

  813. This is the Holy Spirit.

  814. And the Spirit of God

  815. manifests the glory of God

  816. as a bright cloud.

  817. It's the same great cloud

  818. with brightness around it

  819. that Ezekiel saw

  820. in his vision

  821. of the glory of God

  822. in Ezekiel 1, 4.

  823. But if you think about it,

  824. a bright cloud

  825. is an oxymoron.

  826. If you look up

  827. a thesaurus

  828. for the word cloud,

  829. it will suggest

  830. words like darkness,

  831. shadow,

  832. shroud,

  833. not things

  834. that you would describe

  835. as radiant or bright.

  836. When something is clouded,

  837. it is hidden.

  838. But this is a bright,

  839. radiant cloud

  840. that gives forth light.

  841. This paradoxical description

  842. captures

  843. how the incomprehensible,

  844. unknowable God

  845. reveals himself

  846. and makes himself known.

  847. Isaiah 45, 15 says,

  848. truly,

  849. you are a God

  850. who hides himself,

  851. O God of Israel,

  852. the Savior.

  853. There is knowledge of God

  854. that is hidden from us.

  855. We can never fully

  856. wrap our minds

  857. around who God is.

  858. We are too puny for that.

  859. And yet,

  860. throughout history,

  861. we see that God

  862. graciously condescends,

  863. comes down to our level,

  864. to reveal himself

  865. to us time and time again.

  866. And we read earlier

  867. from our call to worship,

  868. it says in Hebrews 1, 1-2,

  869. long ago,

  870. at many times

  871. and in many ways,

  872. God spoke to our fathers

  873. by the prophets.

  874. But in these last days,

  875. he has spoken to us

  876. by his Son,

  877. whom he appointed

  878. the heir of all things,

  879. through whom also

  880. he created the world.

  881. He is the radiance

  882. of the glory of God

  883. and the exact imprint

  884. of his nature.

  885. God has revealed

  886. himself to us

  887. in his Son.

  888. No one has seen God.

  889. God,

  890. the only Son

  891. who is at the Father's side,

  892. he has made him known,

  893. John 1, 18.

  894. This is why Jesus can say

  895. in John 14, 9,

  896. whoever has seen me

  897. has seen the Father.

  898. And in John 14,

  899. John 10, 30,

  900. I and the Father are one.

  901. All the fullness of God

  902. is pleased to dwell

  903. in Jesus,

  904. the Son.

  905. So do you see

  906. what's happening here?

  907. The triune God

  908. is revealing himself

  909. in Jesus

  910. in a way

  911. that he has never

  912. revealed himself before.

  913. Here is Jesus Christ,

  914. God's Son,

  915. the radiance of the glory

  916. of God

  917. and the exact imprint

  918. of his nature,

  919. radiating the very

  920. glory of God.

  921. What I would give

  922. to see that.

  923. And one day soon,

  924. we shall all see that,

  925. all those who belong

  926. to Christ.

  927. So God,

  928. the Father,

  929. is rebuking Peter here.

  930. Peter's

  931. poor guy, right?

  932. He just got rebuked

  933. by Jesus.

  934. Now he gets rebuked

  935. by God,

  936. the Father.

  937. No, no,

  938. there is no need

  939. for three tents.

  940. Moses and Elijah

  941. have not appeared

  942. to you,

  943. James and John,

  944. so that you can

  945. gawk at them.

  946. No,

  947. they are fans.

  948. They're here

  949. to see Jesus.

  950. And what they could

  951. not do previously

  952. during their lives

  953. on earth,

  954. their greatest desire

  955. that did not bear fruit

  956. in their life

  957. on earth,

  958. now comes to

  959. glorious fruition

  960. as they behold

  961. Jesus Christ

  962. whom they have

  963. been waiting for.

  964. Listen to him.

  965. Don't worry about

  966. these other guys.

  967. The days of the tabernacle

  968. and the temple

  969. are no more

  970. because John 1, 14

  971. says,

  972. the word became

  973. flesh and dwelt

  974. among us

  975. and we have

  976. seen his glory.

  977. Glory is of the only

  978. son from the father.

  979. And that word,

  980. dwelt among us,

  981. is literally

  982. he pitched a tent

  983. among us.

  984. He tabernacled

  985. among us.

  986. Jesus is himself

  987. the very dwelling

  988. place of God.

  989. He is the new

  990. temple,

  991. it says in John 2,

  992. 19 to 20.

  993. And all who are

  994. united to

  995. Jesus Christ

  996. by faith,

  997. God is building

  998. into his dwelling

  999. place.

  1000. You all are

  1001. the dwelling

  1002. place of God.

  1003. The house

  1004. of his spirit.

  1005. You don't need

  1006. tents anymore.

  1007. You don't need

  1008. tabernacles anymore.

  1009. Imagine how shocking

  1010. this revelation

  1011. would have been

  1012. for these good Jews,

  1013. Peter, James, and John.

  1014. John 9, 28 to 29,

  1015. a man born blind

  1016. from,

1017. a man who was born blind

  1018. is healed by Jesus

  1019. and he starts to

  1020. bear witness to Jesus

  1021. and tells people

  1022. about Jesus.

  1023. I once was blind

  1024. but now I see

  1025. and then the Pharisees

  1026. sneer at him

  1027. and they revile him

  1028. saying,

  1029. you are his disciple

  1030. but we are disciples

  1031. of Moses.

  1032. We know that God

  1033. has spoken to Moses

1034. but as for this man,

  1035. we do not know

  1036. where he comes from.

  1037. That's how much

  1038. the Jews revered

  1039. and trusted in Moses

  1040. but in the transfiguration,

  1041. God the Father

  1042. draws his lines

  1043. very, very clearly.

  1044. As Hebrews 3,

  1045. 3 to 6 says,

1046. for Jesus has been counted

  1047. worthy of more glory

  1048. than Moses.

  1049. As much more glory

  1050. as the builder

  1051. of a house

  1052. has more honor

  1053. than the house itself.

  1054. For every house

  1055. is built by someone

  1056. but the builder

  1057. of all things

  1058. is God.

  1059. He's saying Jesus

  1060. is God.

  1061. Now Moses was faithful

  1062. in all God's house

  1063. as a servant

  1064. to testify

  1065. to the things

1066. that were to be spoken later

  1067. but Christ is faithful

  1068. over God's house

  1069. as a son.

  1070. Moses is merely

  1071. a servant.

  1072. Christ is God's son.

  1073. When Moses came down

  1074. from Mount Sinai

  1075. after talking with God,

1076. the skin of his face

  1077. shone, it says.

  1078. But this glory

  1079. as we see

  1080. in 2 Corinthians 3,

  1081. 13 and 15

  1082. is a fading glory.

  1083. It's merely

  1084. an external reflection

1085. of the glory of God

1086. that he had just been

  1087. in the presence of.

1088. But in the case of Jesus,

  1089. his glory

  1090. shines from his essence,

  1091. from his very being,

  1092. from the inside out.

1093. This is an essential glory,

  1094. the unveiling

  1095. of the divine glory

  1096. that Jesus,

1097. earlier we saw from John,

  1098. that he said

  1099. he had before

  1100. with the Father

  1101. in eternity past.

  1102. Moses' light

  1103. was the light

  1104. of the moon,

  1105. merely reflecting

1106. the light of the sun.

  1107. Jesus' light

  1108. is the light

  1109. of the sun.

  1110. So the Father says,

1111. this is my beloved son.

  1112. Yeah, sure,

  1113. Moses' beloved servant,

  1114. great.

  1115. Elijah,

1116. this is my beloved son

1117. with whom I am well pleased.

  1118. Listen to him.

1119. This is why in verse 8,

  1120. I love this,

  1121. when they lifted up

  1122. their eyes,

  1123. they saw no one

  1124. but Jesus only.

  1125. all three transfiguration accounts

  1126. in Matthew,

  1127. Mark,

  1128. and Luke

  1129. emphasize this,

  1130. that at the end,

  1131. Moses and Elijah

  1132. were gone.

  1133. No one

  1134. but Jesus

  1135. only

  1136. remained.

  1137. Why?

  1138. Because

  1139. Jesus

  1140. only

  1141. is the Christ,

  1142. the son

  1143. of the living God.

  1144. Because

  1145. Jesus

  1146. only,

  1147. there's salvation

  1148. in no one else,

1149. for there is no other name

  1150. under heaven

  1151. given to mankind

1152. by which we must be saved,

1153. but the name of Jesus

  1154. only.

  1155. Because

  1156. there is one God

  1157. and one mediator

  1158. between God and man,

  1159. and that's the man,

  1160. Christ Jesus.

  1161. It says in 1 Timothy 2, 5.

  1162. Because

  1163. Jesus says

  1164. in John 14, 6,

  1165. I am the way,

  1166. the truth,

  1167. and the life,

  1168. and no one

  1169. comes to the Father

  1170. except through me.

  1171. because

  1172. Jesus

  1173. is the only one.

  1174. So no,

  1175. I don't mean

  1176. to be rude,

  1177. but Jesus

  1178. and Moses

  1179. and Elijah

1180. are not in the same category.

  1181. No civic

  1182. or religious leader,

  1183. no wise man

  1184. or guru

  1185. or monk

  1186. or prophet

1187. in all of human history

1188. is in the same category

  1189. as Jesus.

  1190. Jesus

  1191. we're talking about this

  1192. in our CG.

  1193. It upsets me

  1194. that his name

  1195. gets mentioned

  1196. alongside all these people

1197. as if he's just one of them.

  1198. One of many.

1199. He's not one of many.

  1200. There's only one.

  1201. I pray,

1202. this is my prayer for you

  1203. that whenever you come

  1204. to worship here,

  1205. you gather

  1206. with Trinity Cambridge Church

  1207. that you leave

  1208. with an eye full

  1209. of Jesus

  1210. only.

  1211. No one

  1212. but Jesus

  1213. only.

  1214. It's quite the privilege

  1215. for Peter,

  1216. James,

  1217. and John,

  1218. isn't it?

  1219. But this glorious vision

  1220. is predictably

  1221. terrifying

  1222. for the disciples.

1223. It says in verse 6,

  1224. when the disciples

  1225. heard this,

  1226. heard the Father speak,

1227. they fell on their faces

  1228. and were terrified.

  1229. This was the response

  1230. of Moses

1231. when he fell upon his face

  1232. on the ground

  1233. and worshiped God.

1234. This is what Elijah did

1235. when he wrapped his face

  1236. to cover himself

1237. from the presence of God.

1238. This is what Isaiah did

  1239. when he was called

  1240. and saw,

  1241. Woe is me,

  1242. for I am lost,

  1243. for I am a man

  1244. of unclean lips

1245. and I dwell in the midst

  1246. of a people

  1247. of unclean lips,

  1248. for my eyes

  1249. have seen the King,

  1250. the Lord of hosts.

  1251. This is how

  1252. every sinful human being

  1253. reacts

  1254. when they are faced

  1255. with the light

1256. of the glory of God

  1257. in the face

  1258. of Jesus Christ.

  1259. He is pure light

1260. and there is no darkness

  1261. in him at all.

  1262. God,

  1263. it says,

  1264. is of purer eyes

  1265. than to see evil.

  1266. So,

  1267. in Habakkuk 1.13,

  1268. so holy is he

  1269. that the priests

  1270. and the Levites

  1271. were allowed

  1272. to enter the tabernacle,

  1273. only the priests

  1274. and the Levites,

  1275. so that it says

  1276. in Numbers 18,

  1277. 21 to 22,

  1278. the people of Israel

  1279. do not come near

  1280. the tent of meeting

  1281. lest they bear sin

  1282. and die.

1283. How can a sinful man

  1284. like me

  1285. with overweening pride

  1286. self-sufficient arrogance

  1287. and self-focused insecurity

  1288. and selfish impatience

  1289. and sinful anger?

1290. How can a man like me

  1291. enter into the cloud

  1292. of divine glory

1293. and behold the face of God?

1294. I will bear my sin and die.

  1295. My sinfulness alone

  1296. is disqualifying enough,

1297. but to make this point

  1298. even clearer,

1299. when he gives the requirements

  1300. for the priests

  1301. in Leviticus 21,

  1302. 16 to 21,

  1303. he says,

  1304. it's not enough

  1305. that you're a descendant

  1306. of Aaron,

  1307. of the priestly class.

  1308. No,

  1309. any,

  1310. any Levite

  1311. that has any blemish

  1312. is not allowed

1313. in the presence of God.

  1314. And these so-called blemishes

  1315. get quite specific.

  1316. No hunchback

  1317. or a dwarf

  1318. or a man

  1319. with a defect

  1320. in his sight

  1321. or an itching disease

  1322. or scabs

1323. to list just a few.

  1324. This is not because

  1325. God is an,

1326. what do you call it,

  1327. an ableist

  1328. or whatever.

  1329. Is that right?

  1330. But because,

  1331. it's not because

  1332. that because he's,

  1333. it's because he's trying

  1334. to teach us

  1335. that God is holy.

  1336. Approaching the living God

  1337. is no casual thing.

1338. It is a fearful thing.

  1339. And no man

  1340. with any blemish,

  1341. any sin,

  1342. any imperfection

  1343. can approach him.

  1344. I'm not a hunchback

  1345. or a dwarf,

  1346. but I do have

  1347. ugly hunched shoulders.

  1348. I'm diminutive

  1349. in stature.

1350. And I have all kinds

  1351. of scabs

  1352. and scars

  1353. and blemishes

  1354. that only Hannah

  1355. has ever seen.

  1356. Right?

  1357. How am I supposed

  1358. to approach God?

  1359. Soon our city

  1360. is going to be

  1361. blanketed with snow,

  1362. pristine snow,

  1363. if the weather

  1364. focus is right.

  1365. And I love

  1366. that part

  1367. of our city,

  1368. our area.

  1369. I would miss

  1370. seeing the snow

1371. if I were to move

  1372. away from here

  1373. to a place

  1374. that has no snow.

  1375. It's so beautiful.

  1376. Pure.

  1377. But soon thereafter,

  1378. probably within hours,

  1379. the white snow

  1380. is going to be

  1381. soiled

  1382. by our muddy shoes,

  1383. blue salt,

  1384. and dog urine

  1385. and feces.

  1386. Have you ever felt

  1387. hesitant

  1388. to step on

  1389. virgin snow?

  1390. Wake up early

  1391. in the morning,

1392. go out to Gore Park,

  1393. which I've done

  1394. in the past,

  1395. not a single footstep

  1396. on the field.

  1397. Like,

  1398. you feel hesitant.

  1399. I don't want to be

  1400. the first person

  1401. to ruin that.

  1402. Have you ever wished

  1403. that snow could stay

  1404. unsullied

  1405. like they are

  1406. when they first

  1407. freshly fall?

  1408. What sinner

  1409. dares to approach

  1410. the pure

  1411. and holy God

  1412. with their

  1413. dirty hands

  1414. and unclean lips

  1415. and impure hearts?

  1416. What sinner

  1417. dares to do that?

  1418. We must be cleansed.

  1419. We must be purified.

  1420. But how?

  1421. This is why

  1422. the glorious

  1423. Son of God

  1424. must be,

  1425. it is necessary

  1426. that he be

  1427. the suffering

  1428. Son of Man.

  1429. Jesus must die

  1430. as the atoning

  1431. sacrifice for sin

  1432. to cleanse us

  1433. of all unrighteousness.

  1434. This is why

  1435. Jesus again

  1436. returns to this

  1437. unpopular topic

  1438. of his impending death

  1439. in verses 10 to 13.

  1440. He tells them

  1441. the prophesied

  1442. Elijah already

  1443. has come.

1444. That was John the Baptist.

  1445. He's already prepared

  1446. the way.

  1447. And these Jewish leaders

  1448. and these Gentiles

  1449. did to him

  1450. whatever they wanted.

  1451. They beheaded him

  1452. and killed him.

  1453. And you know what?

  1454. The Son of Man

  1455. is going to suffer

  1456. in the same way.

  1457. This is why

  1458. Jesus commands them

  1459. in verse 9,

1460. tell no one the vision

1461. until the Son of Man

1462. is raised from the dead.

  1463. Because if the other

  1464. disciples find out

  1465. about what happened

  1466. on the mountain

  1467. and what the

  1468. transfiguration

  1469. that took place,

  1470. it will hinder

  1471. his mission

  1472. to seek and save

  1473. the lost

1474. by dying on the cross

  1475. for their sin.

1476. They will not allow it.

  1477. No, no, no.

  1478. You are the glorious

  1479. Son of God.

  1480. That's not the path

  1481. for you.

  1482. But Jesus knew

  1483. that was the path

  1484. for him.

  1485. Notice how

  1486. this whole experience

  1487. was intended

  1488. to prepare

  1489. Peter,

  1490. James,

  1491. and John

  1492. as witnesses

  1493. in verse 2.

  1494. It says,

  1495. He was transfigured

  1496. before them.

  1497. Verse 3,

  1498. Behold,

  1499. there appeared

  1500. to them

  1501. Moses and Elijah

  1502. talking with Jesus.

  1503. Verse 5,

  1504. Behold,

  1505. a bright cloud

  1506. overshadowed them

  1507. and God the Father

  1508. speaks to them

  1509. saying,

  1510. listen to him.

  1511. This whole experience

  1512. is designed

  1513. to help Peter,

  1514. James,

  1515. and John

  1516. to see

  1517. and never forget

  1518. that Jesus

  1519. is the glorious

  1520. Son of God

  1521. because their faith

  1522. will be tested.

  1523. They will see

  1524. this glorious

  1525. Son of God

  1526. get flogged

  1527. and sped on

  1528. and stripped naked

  1529. and crucified

  1530. as a suffering

  1531. Son of Man.

  1532. But they must

  1533. remember this vision

  1534. that the death

  1535. and the resurrection

  1536. of the Messiah

  1537. is God's salvation

  1538. plan after all.

  1539. Just because

  1540. Jesus was born

  1541. of Mary,

  1542. just because

  1543. he was a baby

  1544. like us

  1545. we all once were,

  1546. just because

  1547. Jesus walked

  1548. the dusty roads

  1549. of the Middle East

  1550. like millions

  1551. before him

  1552. and since,

  1553. just because

  1554. Jesus died

  1555. a shameful

  1556. death on the cross,

  1557. do not be tempted

  1558. to disbelieve

  1559. that he is

  1560. the glorious

  1561. Son of God.

  1562. Jesus needed

  1563. to die

  1564. on the cross.

  1565. It is there

  1566. he dies

  1567. and he spills

  1568. his blood

  1569. because blood

  1570. is what atones

  1571. for sin

  1572. and as the glorious

  1573. Son of God

  1574. his blood

  1575. is sufficient

  1576. to atone

1577. for all of our sins

  1578. so that when we

  1579. put our trust

  1580. in Jesus

  1581. and when we

  1582. confess our sins

  1583. and all of our

  1584. soiled snow

  1585. and repent of it,

  1586. as Brittany read

  1587. from Isaiah

  1588. 1.18

  1589. this morning

  1590. in her prophecy,

  1591. though your sins

  1592. are as red

  1593. as scarlet,

  1594. it shall be

  1595. as white

  1596. as snow.

  1597. When I was

  1598. giving you guys

  1599. earlier

  1600. a biblical

  1601. theology

  1602. of mountains,

  1603. I left out

  1604. one very,

  1605. very important

  1606. mountain,

  1607. perhaps the most

  1608. important mountain,

  1609. it's Mount Zion

  1610. where Solomon

  1611. builds his temple

  1612. where atoning

  1613. sacrifices

  1614. for sin

  1615. are made

  1616. and that mountain

  1617. has another name,

  1618. we find this out

  1619. in 2 Chronicles 3.1

  1620. this mountain,

  1621. Mount Zion

  1622. is also called

  1623. in earlier era

  1624. Mount Moriah

  1625. where Abraham

  1626. first offered

  1627. his only son,

  1628. his beloved son,

  1629. Isaac,

  1630. as a sacrifice

  1631. and God

  1632. provided a substitute,

  1633. a ram,

  1634. to die

  1635. in the place

  1636. of his son

  1637. so that he might

  1638. live

  1639. do you think

  1640. God's been

  1641. planning this

  1642. all along?

  1643. Yeah.

  1644. From Mount Moriah,

  1645. the place

  1646. of sacrifice

  1647. that's substitute

  1648. to Mount Zion

  1649. where sacrifices

  1650. offered,

  1651. lamb is offered

  1652. on the day

  1653. of atonement

  1654. and then

  1655. to the

  1656. Mount

  1657. of crucifixion

  1658. where we all

  1659. deserve to die

  1660. and God

  1661. gives instead

  1662. his only son.

  1663. If Mount Horeb

  1664. is the place

  1665. where we receive

  1666. God's law,

  1667. Mount Zion,

  1668. Mount Moriah

  1669. is where we receive

  1670. the mercy

  1671. and grace

  1672. of God.

  1673. So,

  1674. all you,

  1675. my brothers and sisters

  1676. who long

  1677. for that

  1678. Mount

  1679. of Transfiguration,

  1680. remember,

  1681. that path

  1682. to Mount

  1683. Transfiguration

  1684. leads through

  1685. the Mount

  1686. of crucifixion.

  1687. It is when we

  1688. behold

  1689. the light

  1690. of the knowledge

  1691. of the gospel

  1692. of Jesus Christ,

  1693. the glory of God

  1694. revealed in the face

  1695. of Jesus Christ

  1696. who died for us

  1697. on that cross.

  1698. that's when we

  1699. are redeemed,

  1700. forgiven,

  1701. united with Christ

  1702. and

  1703. sanctified

  1704. to be more

  1705. and more like him.

  1706. And this is why

  1707. Jesus gives

  1708. that main

  1709. exhortion,

  1710. anyone who would

  1711. come after me

  1712. must carry his

  1713. cross and follow me.

  1714. yes,

  1715. we long

  1716. for that

  1717. glory,

  1718. the divine glory

1719. of the Son of God

1720. and we will see it

  1721. one day.

  1722. We will be

  1723. transported

  1724. into heavenly

  1725. eternal ecstasy

  1726. and when we

  1727. behold that

  1728. beatific vision,

  1729. that blessed

  1730. vision of God

  1731. seeing him

  1732. face to face

  1733. and we long

  1734. for it

  1735. and we wait

  1736. for it,

  1737. we pine for it

1738. but as we do that

  1739. we live this life

  1740. knowing that

  1741. we must carry

  1742. our cross

  1743. through the

  1744. mount of

  1745. crucifixion

  1746. and then

  1747. we will get

  1748. there.

  1749. Let's pray

  1750. together.

  1751. Heavenly

  1752. Father,

  1753. please,

  1754. please

  1755. enlarge our

  1756. vision of

  1757. your Son

  1758. Jesus Christ.

  1759. oh,

  1760. Father,

  1761. if we could

  1762. see

  1763. his beauty,

  1764. oh,

  1765. all these

  1766. trifling

  1767. temptations

  1768. of this world

  1769. would lose

  1770. all their

  1771. luster.

  1772. open up

  1773. the eyes

  1774. of our

  1775. hearts

  1776. so that

  1777. by eyes

  1778. of faith,

  1779. Lord,

  1780. we might

  1781. behold

  1782. Jesus

  1783. more clearly

  1784. today than

  1785. we ever

  1786. have before.

  1787. In his

  1788. precious name

  1789. we pray.

  1790. Amen.
