  1. Turn with me in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 17, verses 14 to 23.

    Matthew 17:14–23

  2. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  3. We'd love to give you a copy of it.

  4. We're in Matthew chapter 17, verses 14 to 23.

    Matthew 17:14–23

  5. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  6. Oh, Lord God.

  7. Lord, how can it be that sinners like us have something to gain from the blood of our Savior?

  8. How can it be that though all our righteousness is woefully inadequate,

  9. that you have made a way for us to be saved by your grace through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone?

  10. Lord, affirm and establish us in that glorious faith.

  11. Fix our eyes on your Son, Jesus Christ, this morning.

  12. Lord, we need more of Him, more of you.

  13. Speak to us, God, in your word. In Jesus' name we pray.

  14. Amen.

  15. Please stand, if you are able, to honor God as I read from His word.

  16. Matthew 17, verses 14 to 23.

    Matthew 17:14–23

  17. And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to Him and kneeling before Him said,

  18. Lord, have mercy on my son.

  19. For he has seizures and he suffers terribly.

  20. For often he falls into the fire and often into the water.

  21. And I brought him to your disciples and they could not heal him.

  22. And Jesus answered, O faithless and twisted generation,

  23. how long am I to be with you?

  24. How long am I to bear with you?

  25. Bring him here to me.

  26. And Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of him.

  27. And the boy was healed instantly.

  28. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said,

  29. Why could we not cast it out?

  30. He said to them,

  31. Because of your little faith.

  32. For truly, I say to you,

  33. if you have faith like a grain of a mustard seed,

  34. you will say to this mountain,

  35. move from here to there and it will move.

  36. And nothing will be impossible for you.

  37. As they were gathering in Galilee,

  38. Jesus said to them,

  39. The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.

  40. And they will kill him.

  41. And he will be raised on the third day.

  42. And they were greatly distressed.

  43. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  44. Please be seated.

  45. Faith is a word that we use often.

  46. As Christians.

  47. But we rarely define it.

  48. However, it is critical that we understand what faith is.

  49. Because Romans 5.1 says,

  50. We are justified by faith.

  51. That's what Connor was just talking about.

  52. It is by faith that we are declared righteous before God.

  53. In other words, there is no salvation apart from faith.

  54. Hebrews 11.6 also says,

  55. Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

  56. It is not merely hard to please God apart from faith.

  57. It is impossible to please God.

  58. So faith is absolutely essential.

  59. Faith features prominently in Jesus' ministry that we've seen throughout the Gospel of Matthew.

  60. Jesus heals the Gentile centurion's paralyzed servant in response to his faith.

  61. Saying,

  62. Truly I tell you,

  63. With no one in Israel have I found such faith.

  64. Go, let it be done for you as you have believed.

  65. When friends brought a paralytic to Jesus for healing,

  66. It says in Matthew 9.2 that Jesus saw their faith.

  67. And that's why he healed him.

  68. Jesus also tells the woman who had the chronic discharge of blood in Matthew 9.22,

  69. Take heart, daughter.

  70. Your faith has made you well.

  71. He heals the two blind men in Matthew 9.29 according to their faith.

  72. Similarly, Jesus heals the demonized daughter of a Canaanite woman that we saw in Matthew 15.28 saying,

  73. Oh woman, great is your faith.

  74. Let it be done for you as you desire.

  75. This is the consistent pattern in Jesus' ministry.

  76. To work miracles, to help, to heal in accordance with people's faith.

  77. Which is why in his hometown of Nazareth, where people did not have faith,

  78. He says in Matthew 13.58,

  79. He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

  80. Their lack of faith.

  81. But why does Jesus care so much about faith?

  82. Why does he emphasize faith so much?

  83. And our passage this morning answers that important question.

  84. Jesus teaches us what the nature of faith is,

  85. and why God prizes it,

  86. and why God has chosen to save us through faith.

  87. And the main point of my sermon this morning is this,

  88. Dare not trust the sweetest frame,

  89. but holy trust in Jesus' name.

  90. That's what we were singing earlier.

  91. I take that main point from the 19th century hymn,

  92. My Hope is Built on Nothing Less.

  93. It means don't put your trust in your favorable circumstances.

  94. Don't put your trust in your frame of mind,

  95. how you're feeling, how you think you're doing,

  96. how you think you're making progress before God.

  97. No, put your faith solely, wholly in Jesus Christ.

  98. In his name.

  99. I'm going to first talk about what little faith is,

  100. and then I'll secondly talk about what faith like a mustard seed is.

  101. Remember where we are in the narrative in the Gospel of Matthew?

  102. We were just on the Mount of Transfiguration.

  103. Peter, James, and John went up and beheld the glory,

  104. the divine glory of Jesus Christ, the Son of God,

  105. unveiled for a period of time.

  106. And now they have come down from that mountain.

  107. The nine other disciples that Jesus didn't take up along with him,

  108. who were left behind,

  109. have apparently been redeeming their time

  110. by ministering to people while Jesus was away.

  111. And so in this passage, they reconvene.

  112. It says in verse 14,

  113. This story is also recounted in Mark chapter 9 and Luke chapter 9.

Mark 9 chapter mention Luke 9 chapter mention

  114. This man's son is afflicted with uncontrollable seizures.

  115. The other Gospel writers note in more detail that he falls down.

  116. He rolls about on the ground, and he foams at the mouth.

  117. And the boy's father notes that he's been doing this,

  118. this kid from childhood.

  119. The Greek word here for having seizures

  120. is a word that literally means moonstruck.

  121. The Greeks believe that this kind of epileptic symptoms

  122. came from being struck by the goddess of the moon, Selene.

  123. We have an English word for that.

  124. We call it lunatic,

  125. which comes from the Latin word for moon, luna.

  126. It means you're struck by the moon.

  127. For thousands of years,

  128. many ancient cultures held that epilepsy

  129. was caused by spirit or a god associated with the moon.

  130. Ancient Mesopotamians termed epilepsy

  131. the hand of sin, attributing it to a spirit.

  132. Modern-day neurologists, of course, deny this.

  133. They tell us that epilepsy is not caused by evil spirits,

  134. whether it's caused by disruptions

  135. in the brain's electrical activity.

  136. For example, it can be caused by traumatic brain injuries

  137. or from tumor growth in the brain.

  138. However, we should not be too quick

  139. in our own chronological snobbery

  140. to dismiss all the ancients.

  141. According to a 2020 article from the journal

  142. Neuroepidemiology,

  143. 50% of epilepsy diagnoses have no identifiable cause.

  144. 50%.

  145. And this research only concerns high-income countries

  146. where they have access to thorough checkups

  147. and medical diagnoses.

  148. Could it be that some of these epilepsies

  149. are not actually epilepsy at all,

  150. but demonization?

  151. Evil spirits attacking people?

  152. I think so.

  153. In this case, the boy's epileptic symptoms

  154. are not caused by disruptions

  155. in the brain's electrical activity,

  156. but by an evil spirit.

  157. And you can see the demon's malice

  158. in what he does to this boy.

  159. In verse 15, it says,

  160. for often he falls into the fire

  161. and often into the water.

  162. The evil one comes only to steal

  163. and to kill and to destroy,

  164. and that is exactly what this minion of Satan

  165. is trying to do.

  166. He's trying to kill and destroy the boy.

  167. The desperate father says in verse 16,

  168. and I brought him to your disciples,

  169. and they could not heal him.

  170. No doubt the man was originally seeking Jesus,

  171. but Jesus is up on the mountain

  172. being transfigured.

  173. So the next best bet is,

  174. okay, well, you guys are his followers.

  175. You're learning from him.

  176. You're his students.

  177. You're his disciples.

  178. Maybe you can help me.

  179. And they have tried their hand in exorcism,

  180. but embarrassingly,

  181. they could not heal the boy.

  182. This should be surprising to us

  183. because in chapter 10, verse 1,

  184. Jesus explicitly and literally

  185. gave them authority over unclean spirits,

  186. it says,

  187. to cast them out

  188. and to heal every disease

  189. and every affliction.

  190. We know from Mark 6, verse 13,

    Mark 6:13

  191. that by the time of the transfiguration,

  192. they had already been doing this.

  193. They had already been casting out demons.

  194. It says that they cast out many demons,

  195. anointed with oil,

  196. many who were sick and healed them.

  197. In Luke 10, 17,

  198. they returned with joy to Jesus,

  199. saying,

  200. Lord, even the demons

  201. are subject to us in your name.

  202. So they were already experienced exorcists.

  203. They've had plenty of real-life,

  204. hands-on opportunities

  205. to witness the power of Jesus' name.

  206. So it's actually surprising

  207. that they weren't able

  208. to cast out this demon.

  209. And we learn later in verse 19

  210. that the disciples themselves

  211. were puzzled by their inability

  212. to cast out the demon.

  213. This report of his disciples' failure

  214. stirs up in Jesus

  215. a passionate lament in verse 17.

  216. Oh, faithless and twisted generation,

  217. how long am I to be with you?

  218. How long am I to bear with you?

  219. Bring him here to me.

  220. There's something about this generation,

  221. Jesus says,

  222. that is twisted,

  223. like into a knot.

  224. Something is off about it.

  225. It's not the way it's supposed to be.

  226. It's not straight.

  227. It's twisted and askew.

  228. And this generation is faithless.

  229. If even his disciples,

  230. to whom it has been given

  231. to know the secrets

  232. of the kingdom of heaven,

  233. as Jesus said in Matthew 13, 11,

  234. if they can't even cast out this demon,

  235. if that's where their faith is,

  236. the rest of this generation,

  237. what can you say about them?

  238. They are faithless and twisted.

  239. How long am I to be with you?

  240. How long am I to bear with you?

  241. Bring the boy to me, Jesus says.

  242. And when the boy is brought to Jesus,

  243. exactly what we expect happens.

  244. There's no spectacular, dramatic showdown

  245. between this extra powerful demon

  246. that the disciples could not cast out

  247. versus Jesus.

  248. There's no buildup in the narrative.

  249. There's no climax.

  250. Matthew's narrative is intentionally simple

  251. and unadorned in verse 18.

  252. And Jesus rebuked the demon.

  253. And he came out of him.

  254. And the boy was healed instantly.

  255. What gives?

  256. The sheepish disciples are too embarrassed

  257. to ask in public,

  258. why couldn't we drive out the demon?

  259. They don't want to be embarrassed

  260. by what Jesus might say.

  261. So they ask Jesus privately,

  262. why could we not cast it out?

  263. And then Jesus' answer in verse 20

  264. is simple but profound,

  265. because of your little faith.

  266. For truly I say to you,

  267. if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed,

  268. you will say to this mountain,

  269. move from here to there,

  270. and it will move,

  271. and nothing will be impossible for you.

  272. If you have an eye for this kind of detail,

  273. you may have noticed

  274. that there is no verse 21 in this chapter.

  275. It goes from verse 20 to verse 22.

  276. That's not a typo.

  277. It's not because someone didn't know how to count.

  278. And it's definitely not a sinister conspiracy

  279. to hide something from us,

  280. like some people are prone to think.

  281. It's simply because when the verse numbers

  282. were added to the Bible in 1555,

  283. verse 21 was in there.

  284. It was included.

  285. However, later,

  286. as more ancient manuscripts

  287. of the original text were discovered,

  288. scholars figured out

  289. that the best and most ancient

  290. original manuscripts

  291. of the Greek New Testament

  292. did not include verse 21.

  293. It was likely a later scribal addition

  294. to bring it into harmony

  295. with the Gospel of Mark.

  296. This is why the modern translators

  297. struck the verse,

  298. and then once you strike the verse,

  299. you can't slide up

  300. all the other verse numbers

  301. because then hundreds of years

  302. of people dealing with these verses

  303. and these schemes

  304. and memorizing the Bible,

  305. if you memorize any verses

  306. in the Bible after this,

  307. now you have your references wrong

  308. by one verse.

  309. You can't do that,

  310. so they just struck the verse

  311. so that it doesn't mess up

  312. our usage of it.

  313. But even if the verse were included,

  314. it wouldn't change much.

  315. You might have a footnote

  316. at the end of verse 20,

  317. if you have certain Bibles

  318. that have that,

  319. and that tells you exactly

  320. what the missing verse was.

  321. It says,

  322. but this kind never comes out

  323. except by prayer and fasting.

  324. Mark 9, 29 does include that verse,

  325. and that's in the original manuscript.

  326. It says,

  327. this kind cannot be driven out

  328. by anything but prayer.

  329. So Jesus said that in this occasion,

  330. but Matthew doesn't include it

  331. because for him,

  332. Jesus' diagnosis,

  333. because of your little faith,

  334. is sufficient explanation.

  335. It is already inclusive of that.

  336. Yes,

  337. Jesus has given authority

  338. to the disciples

  339. to cast out demons,

  340. but they must always remember

  341. that this power

  342. does not reside in themselves

  343. or in their methods

  344. or techniques,

  345. but in Jesus alone.

  346. They must draw

  347. from the power of Jesus

  348. through faith.

  349. Faith is the only instrument

  350. by which one can draw on

  351. and exercise the authority

  352. and the power of Jesus,

  353. but they lacked it.

  354. They had little faith,

  355. and so there was little prayer

  356. or none at all.

  357. Why is faith the key?

  358. Faith is one of the foundational

  359. Christian virtues.

  360. 1 Corinthians 13, 13 says,

  361. So now faith, hope, and love

  362. abide these three,

  363. but the greatest of these is love.

  364. Paul says love is the greatest

  365. of the three

  366. because love is what lasts forever.

  367. Faith and hope only last

  368. in this lifetime

  369. because they are characteristic

  370. of this present age

  371. before the consummation

  372. of the kingdom of God.

  373. Hebrews 11, 1 offers

  374. a helpful definition.

  375. Now faith is the assurance

  376. of things hoped for,

  377. the conviction of things

  378. not seen.

  379. That's the ESV.

  380. The reason why we need faith

  381. in this life

  382. is because we do not yet

  383. see the invisible

  384. spiritual reality,

  385. so we have to walk by faith

  386. and not by sight.

  387. But soon will come a day

  388. when we will see God

  389. face to face,

  390. at which point

  391. we will no longer need

  392. any faith

  393. because our faith

  394. will have turned to sight.

  395. Faith is not a weak,

  396. tentative thing.

  397. It is assurance

  398. and conviction,

  399. it says in Hebrews 11, 1.

  400. Paul uses those strong words

  401. for a reason.

  402. In fact,

  403. the original in the Greek

  404. is even stronger,

  405. and I think I have

  406. the King James Version

  407. to project for you

  408. which captures it well.

  409. It says,

  410. Now faith

  411. is the substance

  412. of things hoped for,

  413. the evidence

  414. of things not seen.

  415. How in the world

  416. is faith

  417. the substance

  418. of things hoped for

  419. and the evidence

  420. of things not seen.

  421. Faith, Paul says,

  422. is not something

  423. that needs evidence

  424. and proof.

  425. Paul says,

  426. No, faith is the proof.

  427. Faith is the evidence.

  428. It is the substance.

  429. How?

  430. Faith is worlds apart

  431. from wishful thinking.

  432. Wishful thinking

  433. is fanciful.

  434. Faith is solid

  435. and substantive.

  436. Wishful thinking

  437. is grounded in fantasy.

  438. Faith is grounded

  439. in reality

  440. because it is grounded

  441. in the certain,

  442. unchangeable,

  443. objective reality

  444. of God

  445. and His promises.

  446. When we walk by faith,

  447. eternal,

  448. heavenly realities

  449. invade our present

  450. earthly perspectives

  451. and priorities.

  452. Heavenly,

  453. when we walk by faith,

  454. heavenly power

  455. invades

  456. our earthly weakness.

  457. And to convey this,

  458. Paul picked

  459. the most solid words

  460. that he can think of

  461. to define faith.

  462. It is the substance

  463. of things hoped for.

  464. The evidence

  465. of things not seen.

  466. This is why Augustine,

  467. the fourth century

  468. Christian pastor,

  469. describes faith this way.

  470. Faith is to believe

  471. what you do not see.

  472. The reward of this faith

  473. is to see

  474. what you believe.

  475. Faith is the evidence

  476. of things not seen.

  477. This is why Hebrews 11, 6

  478. says, as I said earlier,

  479. and without faith,

  480. it is impossible

  481. to please Him.

  482. For whoever would draw

  483. near to God

  484. must believe that He exists

  485. and that He rewards

  486. those who seek Him.

  487. The object of faith

  488. is God

  489. and when we walk

  490. by faith,

  491. we live as if

  492. this all-knowing

  493. and all-powerful,

  494. everywhere-present God

  495. really exists

  496. and that His promises

  497. are really true

  498. and that He will

  499. really reward us

  500. for our faithfulness

  501. to Him.

  502. That's faith.

  503. The disciples

  504. did not try

  505. to cast out the demon

  506. with this kind of faith.

  507. Instead,

  508. they had little faith.

  509. This is now

  510. the fifth

  511. and final time

  512. that Jesus rebukes

  513. His disciples

  514. for their little faith.

  515. Let's do a brief survey.

  516. In Matthew 6, 30,

  517. Jesus said,

  518. you worry about

  519. what you will eat

  520. and drink.

  521. Will not God

  522. who feeds the birds

  523. of the air

  524. and clothes the grass

  525. of the field

  526. not take care of you,

  527. you of little faith?

  528. Matthew 8, 26,

  529. why are you afraid?

  530. This is when

  531. they are in turbulencies.

  532. They are rowing

  533. and going on their boats

  534. and then Jesus rebukes

  535. the wind and the sea

  536. so there's a great comment.

  537. He says to them

  538. before that,

  539. why are you afraid,

  540. oh you,

  541. of little faith?

  542. Matthew 14, 30 to 31,

  543. Peter asks Jesus,

  544. let me walk on water

  545. because Jesus just came to him

  546. walking on water

  547. and Jesus says,

  548. come,

  549. and then Peter starts

  550. walking on water

  551. but he says,

  552. as soon as he saw

  553. the wind,

  554. wind churning up

  555. the waters,

  556. he becomes fearful

  557. and is filled with doubt

  558. and then he begins

  559. to sink

  560. and then Jesus says

  561. to him,

  562. oh you,

  563. of little faith,

  564. why did you doubt?

  565. And then finally

  566. in chapter 16,

  567. verse 8,

  568. which we saw recently,

  569. when they forgot

  570. to bring bread,

  571. they're worried

  572. that they're going

  573. to go hungry

  574. and then Jesus

  575. tells them,

  576. why are you discussing

  577. among yourselves

  578. the fact that you

  579. have no bread,

  580. oh you,

  581. of little faith?

  582. All of these situations

  583. have in common

  584. something

  585. and there is

  586. that they do

  587. have some faith

  588. but it is not

  589. full faith.

  590. There's something

  591. else besides God

  592. that they are

  593. depending on.

  594. They're not coming

  595. to God empty handed,

  596. they're coming

  597. with something else

  598. in their hands.

  599. When there's

  600. plenty of food

  601. to eat,

  602. plenty of bread

  603. packed in their

  604. knapsacks,

  605. they have full trust

  606. that God's going

  607. to provide for them

  608. and feed them.

  609. Oh yes,

  610. our heavenly father

  611. provides for us.

  612. Look right here,

  613. look,

  614. I got some bread

  615. right in my bag.

  616. But when they have

  617. no bread,

  618. now that faith

  619. falters.

  620. Oh,

  621. why?

  622. Because they didn't

  623. come,

  624. their faith wasn't

  625. fully on God

  626. in the first place,

  627. their faith was

  628. in God and

  629. my preparedness

  630. in industry,

  631. the bread that I

  632. brought on with me.

  633. As they're going

  634. on the water,

  635. their waters

  636. churned up

  637. by the winds.

  638. When the waters

  639. come and the sun

  640. is shining and

  641. full faith in God.

  642. Yes,

  643. God is our

  644. navigator,

  645. God is our

  646. lodestar,

  647. he guides us,

  648. he protects us

  649. and he will bring

  650. us to our final

  651. destination.

  652. Full faith in God.

  653. But as soon as

  654. the storm

  655. comes up

  656. and the wind

  657. blows and he

  658. sees the water,

  659. the Peter,

  660. that faith

  661. falters because

  662. that faith

  663. was not

  664. fully on God

  665. alone in the

  666. first place

  667. because it

  668. was on God

  669. and

  670. calm weather.

  671. Favorable

  672. circumstances.

  673. In what areas

  674. of your life

  675. do you have

  676. little faith?

  677. faith?

  678. What are the

  679. sweetest frames

  680. of your life

  681. that you are

  682. putting your

  683. trust in

  684. rather than

  685. in Jesus

  686. Christ?

  687. Your

  688. intelligence?

  689. your

  690. financial

  691. portfolio?

  692. Your

  693. savings account?

  694. Your

  695. resume?

  696. Your

  697. connections?

  698. Your

  699. diligence?

  700. And

  701. discipline?

  702. I trust you

  703. God and I

  704. trust these

  705. things that I

  706. have.

  707. Let's think

  708. for a minute

  709. about what

  710. this might

  711. have looked

  712. like for the

  713. disciples that

  714. are trying to

  715. cast out the

  716. demon.

  717. I cast you

  718. out in the

  719. name of

  720. Jesus.

  721. Leave this

  722. boy.

  723. Nothing

  724. happens.

  725. Maybe

  726. he didn't

  727. hear me.

  728. A little bit

  729. louder.

  730. I cast you

  731. out in the

  732. name of

  733. Jesus.

  734. Leave.

  735. Nothing

  736. happens.

  737. Oh wait,

  738. that's right.

  739. That's right.

  740. I should lay

  741. hands on the

  742. boy.

  743. I cast you

  744. out in the

  745. name of

  746. Jesus.

  747. Leave.

  748. Nothing

  749. happens.

  750. Wait,

  751. what's going

  752. on?

  753. Oh wait,

  754. that one

  755. time Jesus

  756. cast out

  757. the demon

  758. legion.

  759. Remember,

  760. Jesus asked

  761. them for

  762. the name

  763. first.

  764. You're

  765. going to

  766. get the

  767. name of

  768. the demon.

  769. Okay,

  770. what's your

  771. name,

  772. demon?

  773. Your name,

  774. demon,

  775. whatever it is,

  776. I cast you

  777. out in the

  778. name of

  779. Jesus.

  780. Nothing

  781. happens.

  782. He says

  783. that they

  784. had some

  785. experience

  786. healing with

  787. using oils.

  788. Maybe they're

  789. using oils.

  790. You know

  791. that some

  792. denominations,

  793. Christian

  794. denominations

  795. nowadays use

  796. that for

  797. exorcism.

  798. Oils and

  799. exorcised

  800. salts.

  801. Spread it

  802. out and

  803. apply oil.

  804. Maybe it's

  805. the oil.

  806. Let's

  807. apply some

  808. oil on

  809. this boy.

  810. I cast you

  811. out in the

  812. name of

  813. Jesus.

  814. Leave.

  815. Nothing

  816. happens.

  817. At some

  818. point between

  819. when Jesus

  820. gave them

  821. the authority

  822. to do

  823. this in

  824. Matthew 10

  825. and now

  826. when they

  827. failed to

  828. exorcist,

  829. cast out

  830. this demon,

  831. the object

  832. of their

  833. trust has

  834. shifted

  835. from God

  836. alone to

  837. these other

  838. things.

  839. They're no

  840. longer coming

  841. to God

  842. with empty

  843. hands.

  844. I have

  845. nothing.

  846. It is all

  847. in your

  848. power to

  849. do this.

  850. They come

  851. with something

  852. else.

  853. Trust in

  854. God and

  855. this.

  856. I'm a little

  857. experienced

  858. now.

  859. I've done

  860. this before.

  861. I've got my

  862. methods now.

  863. I've got my

  864. techniques now.

  865. I bring these

  866. along with me

  867. and it doesn't

  868. work.

  869. It doesn't

  870. work.

  871. Because that's

  872. the point.

  873. Faith is the

  874. empty work.

  875. Faith is the

  876. one method,

  877. one way,

  878. the means

  879. by which God

  880. works powerful

  881. things and we

  882. get no credit

  883. at all and all

  884. credit and glory

  885. belongs to him.

  886. That's the only

  887. way.

  888. That's why God

  889. moves like that.

  890. This is why

  891. whenever people

  892. present techniques

  893. or strategies

  894. were proposed

  895. to me some

  896. foolproof way

  897. of growing

  898. your church

  899. and having

  900. success in

  901. Christian ministry

  902. and making

  903. sure people

  904. are converted,

  905. I have this

  906. kind of

  907. instinctual

  908. allergic reaction.

  909. Probably to

  910. a fault.

  911. In his book,

  912. David and

  913. Goliath,

  914. Underdogs,

  915. Misfits,

  916. and the Art

  917. of Battling

  918. Giants,

  919. Malcolm Gladwell

  920. writes a

  921. revisionist

  922. account of

  923. the David and

  924. Goliath

  925. story.

  926. He argues

  927. that David

  928. was actually

  929. not the

  930. underdog in

  931. the fight.

  932. He argues

  933. that David

  934. had the

  935. advantage

  936. because he

  937. was using

  938. superior,

  939. unconventional,

  940. high-speed

  941. projectile

  942. technology

  943. against a

  944. slow,

  945. heavy

  946. infantryman.

  947. But I

  948. assure you

  949. that if

  950. David had

  951. entered that

  952. battlefield against

  953. Goliath with

  954. that mindset,

  955. with his

  956. faith,

  957. not in

  958. the living

  959. God,

  960. but in

  961. his

  962. superior

  963. sling

  964. technology,

  965. he would

  966. have been

  967. speared to

  968. death,

  969. and we

  970. would have

  971. never heard

  972. of him

  973. again.

  974. What does

  975. David say

  976. to the

  977. Philistine

  978. Goliath in

  979. 1 Samuel 17,

  980. 45,

  981. 46?

  982. You come

  983. to me with

  984. heavy sword

  985. and javelin

  986. and spear,

  987. but I

  988. come to you

  989. with advanced

  990. high-speed

  991. projectile

  992. technology.

  993. no,

  994. of course

  995. not,

  996. that's not

  997. what he

  998. says.

  999. David says,

  1000. you come

  1001. to me with

  1002. the sword

  1003. and with

  1004. the spear

  1005. and with

  1006. the javelin,

  1007. but I

  1008. come to

  1009. you in

  1010. the name

  1011. of the

  1012. Lord of

  1013. hosts,

  1014. the God

  1015. of the

  1016. armies of

  1017. Israel,

  1018. whom you

  1019. have defied

  1020. this day,

  1021. the Lord

  1022. will deliver

  1023. you into

  1024. my hand.

  1025. David defeated

  1026. Goliath because

  1027. of his faith

  1028. in God,

  1029. not because

  1030. of his faith

  1031. in himself

  1032. or his

  1033. weapons.

  1034. And whenever

  1035. we have

  1036. the Lord

  1037. of hosts,

  1038. Almighty

  1039. God,

  1040. on our

  1041. side,

  1042. I don't

  1043. care what

  1044. the odds

  1045. makers say.

  1046. I like

  1047. our chances.

  1048. Psalm 20,

    Psalms 20:7

  1049. verse 7,

  1050. says,

  1051. some trust

  1052. in chariots

  1053. and some

  1054. in horses,

  1055. but we

  1056. trust in

  1057. the name

  1058. of the

  1059. Lord,

  1060. our

  1061. God.

  1062. This

  1063. doesn't

  1064. mean

  1065. that the

  1066. Israelites

  1067. never used

  1068. chariots

  1069. and horses.

  1070. They did.

  1071. But they

  1072. must never

  1073. trust in

  1074. chariots

  1075. and horses

  1076. in the

  1077. place of

  1078. trusting in

  1079. the Lord.

  1080. I'm not

  1081. denying that

  1082. God uses

  1083. means.

  1084. He does

  1085. use means.

  1086. But there's

  1087. a difference

  1088. between trusting

  1089. in the God

  1090. alone who

  1091. uses means

  1092. to help us

  1093. versus

  1094. trusting in

  1095. the means

  1096. themselves.

  1097. the big

  1098. difference.

  1099. Maybe

  1100. that's why

  1101. in Joshua

  1102. 11,

  1103. 6,

  1104. when they're

  1105. first conquering

  1106. the land

  1107. of Canaan,

  1108. the Lord

  1109. commanded

  1110. them,

  1111. hamstring

  1112. their horses

  1113. and burn

  1114. their chariots

  1115. with fire.

  1116. Why?

  1117. That's

  1118. perfectly good

  1119. equipment.

  1120. We could

  1121. use those

  1122. for ourselves.

  1123. No,

  1124. burn the

  1125. chariots,

  1126. hamstring the

  1127. horses.

  1128. So you

  1129. might always

  1130. know that

  1131. your battle

  1132. is won

  1133. not by

  1134. horses and

  1135. chariots,

  1136. but by

  1137. the Lord

  1138. God

  1139. Almighty.

  1140. In

  1141. contrast to

  1142. their little

  1143. faith,

  1144. Jesus says

  1145. in verse

  1146. 20,

  1147. for truly

  1148. I say

  1149. to you,

  1150. if you

  1151. have faith

  1152. like a

  1153. grain of

  1154. mustard

  1155. seed,

  1156. and you

  1157. will say

  1158. to this

  1159. mountain,

  1160. move from

  1161. here to

  1162. there,

  1163. and it

  1164. will move,

  1165. and nothing

  1166. will be

  1167. impossible

  1168. for you.

  1169. what is

  1170. faith like

  1171. a grain

  1172. of mustard

  1173. seed?

  1174. We've

  1175. seen a

  1176. grain of

  1177. mustard

  1178. seed before,

  1179. early in

  1180. chapter 13,

  1181. where Jesus

  1182. compares the

  1183. kingdom of

  1184. heaven to

  1185. a grain of

  1186. mustard

  1187. seed that

  1188. is sown

  1189. in the

  1190. field,

  1191. and in

  1192. that context,

  1193. Jesus

  1194. describes this

  1195. as the

  1196. smallest of

  1197. all seeds.

  1198. A

  1199. mustard

  1200. seed,

  1201. probably in

  1202. this case

  1203. black

  1204. mustard,

  1205. is a

  1206. proverbially

  1207. small

  1208. seed.

  1209. It's the

  1210. smallest

  1211. seed that

  1212. was commonly

  1213. sown in

  1214. that

  1215. region.

  1216. I kind

  1217. of wanted

  1218. to bring

  1219. the

  1220. perilla

  1221. seeds that

  1222. I have

  1223. at home

  1224. because it's

  1225. about the

  1226. same size.

  1227. You wouldn't

  1228. be able to

  1229. see it if I

  1230. were to

  1231. hold it up

  1232. to you.

  1233. It's the

  1234. smallest of

  1235. the common

  1236. cultivated

  1237. seeds in

  1238. the

  1239. ancient

  1240. areas.

  1241. And this

  1242. is why

  1243. most people

  1244. understand

  1245. faith like

  1246. a grain of

  1247. mustard

  1248. seed as

  1249. referring to

  1250. small

  1251. faith.

  1252. Since

  1253. mustard

  1254. seed is a

  1255. small

  1256. seed,

  1257. a mustard

  1258. seed

  1259. faith must

  1260. be a

  1261. small

  1262. faith.

  1263. However,

  1264. that

  1265. interpretation

  1266. runs into

  1267. a small

  1268. problem in

  1269. verse 20

  1270. because Jesus

  1271. just admonished

  1272. the disciples

  1273. saying that

  1274. they were

  1275. unable to

  1276. cast out

  1277. the demon

  1278. because of

  1279. their little

  1280. faith.

  1281. So then

  1282. right after

  1283. saying that

  1284. is Jesus

  1285. now saying

  1286. that all

  1287. you need

  1288. is little

  1289. itty bitty

  1290. faith like

  1291. a mustard

  1292. seed and

  1293. then you

  1294. can move

  1295. mountains?

  1296. Well then

  1297. why didn't

  1298. it work?

  1299. you said

  1300. they have

  1301. little

  1302. faith.

  1303. It doesn't

  1304. quite fit.

  1305. I was

  1306. confused by

  1307. this.

  1308. I'm sorry

  1309. to say

  1310. that this

  1311. is the

  1312. first time

  1313. I'm

  1314. preaching

  1315. on this

  1316. passage

  1317. and I

  1318. didn't

  1319. realize

  1320. this until

  1321. this past

  1322. week that

  1323. doesn't

  1324. work,

  1325. doesn't

  1326. make sense.

  1327. And so I

  1328. was confused

  1329. and I

  1330. asked God

  1331. for help

  1332. and then

  1333. he

  1334. immediately

  1335. brought to

  1336. my mind

  1337. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 13:2

  1338. 13 verse

  1339. 2.

  1340. According

  1341. to this

  1342. verse,

  1343. what kind

  1344. of faith

  1345. is required

  1346. to move

  1347. mountains?

  1348. Not

  1349. tidy

  1350. mustard

  1351. seed

  1352. faith,

  1353. all

  1354. faith.

  1355. If you

  1356. have all

  1357. faith so

  1358. as to

  1359. remove

  1360. mountains,

  1361. so it's

  1362. not little

  1363. faith that

  1364. Jesus is

  1365. talking about

  1366. here.

  1367. Mustard

  1368. seed faith

  1369. cannot refer

  1370. to a

  1371. small or

  1372. weak faith.

  1373. Faith that

  1374. moves mountains

  1375. is a

  1376. great faith.

  1377. It's all

  1378. faith.

  1379. Why then

  1380. does Jesus

  1381. highlight faith

  1382. like a

  1383. grain of

  1384. mustard

  1385. seed?

  1386. A

  1387. mustard

  1388. seed is

  1389. a small

  1390. seed and

  1391. there's

  1392. something

  1393. else that

  1394. is small

  1395. that Matthew

  1396. loves to

  1397. talk about.

  1398. more than

  1399. any other

  1400. New Testament

  1401. writers and

  1402. four times as

  1403. much as the

  1404. other synoptic

  1405. gospels,

  1406. Matthew

  1407. mentions

  1408. little ones.

  1409. That's

  1410. Matthew's

  1411. favorite way

  1412. of referring

  1413. to the

  1414. followers of

  1415. Jesus.

  1416. And whoever

  1417. gives one of

  1418. these little

  1419. ones even a

  1420. cup of cold

  1421. water because

  1422. he is a

  1423. disciple,

  1424. truly I say

  1425. to you,

  1426. he will by

  1427. no means

  1428. lose his

  1429. reward.

  1430. Matthew

  1431. 10,

  1432. 42.

  1433. Matthew

  1434. 18,

  1435. 6.

  1436. Whoever

  1437. causes one

  1438. of these

  1439. little ones

  1440. who believe

  1441. in me to

  1442. sin,

  1443. it would

  1444. be better

  1445. for him

  1446. to have

  1447. a great

  1448. millstone

  1449. fastened

  1450. around his

  1451. neck and

  1452. to be

  1453. drowned in

  1454. the depths

  1455. of the sea.

  1456. Matthew

  1457. 18,

  1458. 10.

  1459. See that

  1460. you do

  1461. not despise

  1462. one of

  1463. these little

  1464. ones for

  1465. I tell you

  1466. that in

  1467. heaven their

  1468. angels always

  1469. see the face

  1470. of my

  1471. father who

  1472. is in

  1473. heaven.

  1474. These

  1475. little

  1476. ones have

  1477. uninterrupted

  1478. and unhindered

  1479. access to

  1480. God.

  1481. They are

  1482. precious to

  1483. him.

  1484. So it

  1485. is not the

  1486. will of

  1487. my father

  1488. who is

  1489. in heaven

  1490. that one

  1491. of these

  1492. little

  1493. ones should

  1494. perish.

  1495. Jesus

  1496. says in

  1497. Matthew

  1498. 18,

  1499. 14.

  1500. Christians

  1501. are by

  1502. definition

  1503. little

  1504. ones,

  1505. small

  1506. people.

  1507. This is

  1508. also why

  1509. twice in

  1510. Matthew's

  1511. gospel Jesus

  1512. points to

  1513. children,

  1514. he brings

  1515. children in

  1516. the midst

  1517. and then

  1518. he says

  1519. to them,

  1520. truly I

  1521. say to

  1522. you,

  1523. unless you

  1524. turn and

  1525. become like

  1526. children,

  1527. you will

  1528. never enter

  1529. the kingdom

  1530. of heaven.

  1531. Whoever

  1532. humbles

  1533. himself like

  1534. this child

  1535. is the

  1536. greatest in

  1537. the kingdom

  1538. of heaven.

  1539. I think

  1540. faith,

  1541. like a

  1542. grain of

  1543. mustard

  1544. seed,

  1545. refers to

  1546. the wholly

  1547. dependent,

  1548. humble

  1549. faith of

  1550. these

  1551. childlike

  1552. little

  1553. ones.

  1554. This

  1555. humble

  1556. faith is

  1557. worlds

  1558. apart from

  1559. the little

  1560. faith of

  1561. the disciples.

  1562. Remember

  1563. what I said

  1564. earlier,

  1565. their faith

  1566. was little

  1567. because it

  1568. was divided.

  1569. Here's

  1570. trust in

  1571. Jesus and

  1572. here's

  1573. this other

  1574. thing.

  1575. Children

  1576. are not

  1577. like that.

  1578. Children

  1579. have nothing

  1580. to bring

  1581. to the

  1582. table.

  1583. They

  1584. have nothing

  1585. to offer.

  1586. They

  1587. come

  1588. empty

  1589. handed,

  1590. childlike,

  1591. dependent,

  1592. humble.

  1593. And so

  1594. viewed in

  1595. this light,

  1596. you can say

  1597. that the

  1598. little faith

  1599. of the

  1600. disciples

  1601. is a

  1602. prideful

  1603. faith.

  1604. And faith

  1605. like a grain

  1606. of mustard

  1607. seed is a

  1608. humble

  1609. faith.

  1610. Mustard

  1611. seed faith

  1612. is a

  1613. humble

  1614. faith because

  1615. it's an

  1616. undivided

  1617. faith that

  1618. trusts in

  1619. God alone

  1620. and puts

  1621. no trust

  1622. in self

  1623. or any

  1624. other thing.

  1625. Is it

  1626. unimpressive

  1627. on the

  1628. outside?

  1629. Of course

  1630. children are

  1631. unimpressive.

  1632. It is

  1633. unimpressive

  1634. and small

  1635. on the

  1636. outside because

  1637. it's a

  1638. faith that

  1639. does not

  1640. make much

  1641. of self

  1642. but only

  1643. makes much

  1644. of God.

  1645. Jesus

  1646. commands a

  1647. mustard

  1648. seed faith

  1649. because it's

  1650. a faith that

  1651. makes us

  1652. look small

  1653. but it

  1654. makes God

  1655. look big.

  1656. So when

  1657. Jesus tells

  1658. us that

  1659. faith like

  1660. a grain of

  1661. mustard seed

  1662. can move

  1663. mountains,

  1664. he's not

  1665. saying that

  1666. that's the

  1667. minimal adequate

  1668. faith.

  1669. A mustard

  1670. faith seed

  1671. is great.

  1672. If you have

  1673. it, good

  1674. for you.

  1675. You can

  1676. move mountains

  1677. but imagine

  1678. if you had

  1679. an avocado

  1680. seed

  1681. or a whole

  1682. coconut.

  1683. You can

  1684. move planets

  1685. that way.

  1686. That's not

  1687. the point.

  1688. He already

  1689. said that if

  1690. we have

  1691. faith like

  1692. a grain of

  1693. mustard seed

  1694. nothing will

  1695. be impossible

  1696. for us.

  1697. This is the

  1698. kind of faith

  1699. that Jesus

  1700. commends for

  1701. all of his

  1702. people.

  1703. Mustard seed

  1704. faith is when

  1705. small people

  1706. trust in a

  1707. big God.

  1708. Charles

  1709. Hedden

  1710. Spurgeon,

  1711. I've used

  1712. these two

  1713. quotes that

  1714. I'm about to

  1715. share with

  1716. you many

  1717. times but I

  1718. do it again

  1719. and again

  1720. because I

  1721. love these

  1722. quotes.

  1723. Prayer,

  1724. and you

  1725. can apply

  1726. this to

  1727. faith,

  1728. prayer is

  1729. the slendered

  1730. nerve that

  1731. moves the

  1732. muscles of

  1733. omnipotence.

  1734. Do you

  1735. want to be

  1736. powerful?

  1737. Childlike,

  1738. dependent,

  1739. humble

  1740. faith.

  1741. John

  1742. Piper says

  1743. this,

  1744. prayer is

  1745. the splicing

  1746. of our

  1747. limp wire

  1748. to the

  1749. lightning bolt

  1750. of heaven.

  1751. I love

  1752. that image.

  1753. Think about

  1754. lightning for

  1755. a moment.

  1756. Lightning is

  1757. five times

  1758. hotter than

  1759. the surface

  1760. of the sun.

  1761. If you see

  1762. a lightning

  1763. from 50

  1764. meters away,

  1765. it will

  1766. appear 10,000

  1767. times brighter

  1768. than the sun.

  1769. A single

  1770. super bolt

  1771. of lightning

  1772. can carry

  1773. up to

  1774. 1 billion

  1775. volts and

  1776. light up

  1777. 100 million

  1778. standard 100

  1779. watt light

  1780. bulbs for an

  1781. instant.

  1782. 100 million

  1783. of them.

  1784. It can

  1785. single-handedly

  1786. power 850,000

  1787. homes for an

  1788. entire day.

  1789. A single

  1790. bolt of

  1791. lightning.

  1792. Now imagine

  1793. that lightning

  1794. bolt falling

  1795. on a copper

  1796. or aluminum

  1797. wire.

  1798. That wire,

  1799. however slack

  1800. or limp,

  1801. however short

  1802. and stubby,

  1803. however thin

  1804. and frayed,

  1805. as long as

  1806. it is purely

  1807. metal,

  1808. will conduct

  1809. that powerful

  1810. lightning

  1811. bolt.

  1812. Likewise,

  1813. because its

  1814. material itself

  1815. is beholden

  1816. to electrical

  1817. currents,

  1818. likewise the

  1819. mustard seed

  1820. faith that is

  1821. beholden to

  1822. God alone

  1823. will conduct

  1824. the power

  1825. of God.

  1826. However,

  1827. if you have

  1828. a nylon

  1829. wire,

  1830. the kind

  1831. you use

  1832. for fishing

  1833. or jewelry

  1834. making,

  1835. no matter

  1836. how long

  1837. and strong

  1838. and thick

  1839. that nylon

  1840. wire might be,

  1841. it cannot

  1842. conduct the

  1843. lightning bolt

  1844. because its

  1845. material is

  1846. not beholden

  1847. to electrical

  1848. currents.

  1849. Likewise,

  1850. the little

  1851. faith that is

  1852. beholden to

  1853. not just

  1854. God but

  1855. to self

  1856. and to

  1857. self-effort,

  1858. to self-righteousness,

  1859. to all these

  1860. other things,

  1861. will not conduct

  1862. the power

  1863. of God.

  1864. It's not

  1865. the faith

  1866. itself that

  1867. is impressive

  1868. but the

  1869. faith that

  1870. taps the

  1871. power of

  1872. the Almighty

  1873. that is

  1874. impressive.

  1875. Who is

  1876. impressive?

  1877. God,

  1878. who is

  1879. impressive?

  1880. And when

  1881. you have

  1882. such faith,

  1883. he says,

  1884. you can

  1885. move mountains

  1886. and nothing

  1887. will be

  1888. impossible

  1889. for you.

  1890. Mountain

  1891. is something

  1892. that doesn't

  1893. move,

  1894. right?

  1895. That's proverbial.

  1896. If you do

  1897. a time-lapse

  1898. video of a

  1899. city that

  1900. has a mountain

  1901. in the middle

  1902. of it,

  1903. everything around

  1904. it will change

  1905. over time,

  1906. over years,

  1907. over decades.

  1908. The mountain

  1909. is just going

  1910. to sit right

  1911. there.

  1912. It doesn't

  1913. move.

  1914. That's what

  1915. mountains are.

  1916. But when

  1917. that mountain,

  1918. a proverbially

  1919. immovable

  1920. thing,

  1921. meets the

  1922. lightning bolt

  1923. of heaven,

  1924. it moves

  1925. because God

  1926. is immovable.

  1927. Mountain

  1928. has to

  1929. move.

  1930. Now,

  1931. to qualify

  1932. this a little

  1933. bit because

  1934. it's such an

  1935. open-ended

  1936. promise,

  1937. nothing will

  1938. be impossible

  1939. for you.

  1940. This doesn't

  1941. mean you can

  1942. do whatever

  1943. you want

  1944. with faith.

  1945. To have

  1946. faith is

  1947. to place

  1948. ourselves

  1949. under the

  1950. mercy of

  1951. God.

  1952. If God

  1953. was obligated

  1954. to do

  1955. everything

  1956. that we

  1957. had faith

  1958. for,

  1959. faith,

  1960. for example,

  1961. to win the

  1962. lottery,

  1963. then that

  1964. would place

  1965. God at

  1966. our mercy.

  1967. No,

  1968. a self-serving,

  1969. self-centered

  1970. faith is no

  1971. faith at all

  1972. because faith

  1973. by definition

  1974. places us

  1975. at God's

  1976. disposal,

  1977. not the

  1978. other way

  1979. around.

  1980. So,

  1981. Jesus'

  1982. open-ended

  1983. statement

  1984. in verse

  1985. 20 that

  1986. if we

  1987. have faith

  1988. like a

  1989. grain of

  1990. mustard

  1991. seed,

  1992. nothing

  1993. will be

  1994. impossible

  1995. for you,

  1996. must be

  1997. understood

  1998. within the

  1999. parameters

  2000. of God's

  2001. will and

  2002. God's

  2003. promises.

  2004. It's similar

  2005. to what Jesus

  2006. said earlier

  2007. in Matthew

  2008. 7,

  2009. ask and it

  2010. will be

  2011. given to

  2012. you,

  2013. seek and

  2014. you will

  2015. find,

  2016. knock and

  2017. it will

  2018. be opened

  2019. to you.

  2020. For

  2021. everyone

  2022. who asks

  2023. receives,

  2024. and the

  2025. one who

  2026. seeks finds,

  2027. and to

  2028. the one

  2029. who knocks

  2030. it will

  2031. be opened.

  2032. Does that

  2033. mean that

  2034. we'll get

  2035. good things

  2036. to those

  2037. who ask

  2038. him?

  2039. God only

  2040. gives his

  2041. precious

  2042. children

  2043. good things.

  2044. And God

  2045. who alone

  2046. is good

  2047. and not

  2048. we who

  2049. are evil

  2050. gets to

  2051. define what

  2052. those good

  2053. things are.

  2054. This is the

  2055. confidence we

  2056. have toward

  2057. him if we

  2058. ask anything

  2059. according to

  2060. his will.

  2061. He hears

  2062. us.

  2063. 1 John

  2064. 5,

  2065. 14.

  2066. And then

  2067. Jesus

  2068. again returns

  2069. to his

  2070. unpopular

  2071. topic that

  2072. he loves

  2073. to preach

  2074. about.

  2075. Verse 22

  2076. and 23.

  2077. And they

  2078. were gathering

  2079. in Galilee.

  2080. Jesus said

  2081. to them,

  2082. the son

  2083. of man

  2084. is about

  2085. to be

  2086. delivered

  2087. into the

  2088. hands

  2089. of men

  2090. and they

  2091. will kill

  2092. him and

  2093. he will

  2094. be raised

  2095. on the

  2096. third day

  2097. and they

  2098. were greatly

  2099. distressed.

  2100. It's a

  2101. little

  2102. curious.

  2103. We've

  2104. seen

  2105. Jesus

  2106. predict

  2107. his

  2108. passion

  2109. and his

  2110. death

  2111. multiple

  2112. times

  2113. now

  2114. and he'll

  2115. do it

  2116. again

  2117. but the

  2118. disciples

  2119. never

  2120. quite get

  2121. over it.

  2122. He says

  2123. he's going

  2124. to be

  2125. raised

  2126. from the

  2127. dead.

  2128. That's a

  2129. good thing

  2130. but they're

  2131. distressed

  2132. because

  2133. this again

  2134. is a sign

  2135. of their

  2136. little faith.

  2137. They're still

  2138. stuck on the

  2139. death part.

  2140. They can't

  2141. imagine

  2142. resurrection

  2143. from the

  2144. dead.

  2145. dead.

  2146. But why

  2147. did Jesus

  2148. have to

  2149. die?

  2150. To move

  2151. a mountain

  2152. that nothing

  2153. else would

  2154. move?

  2155. Right?

  2156. It's what

  2157. Connor was

  2158. talking about.

  2159. Realizing the

  2160. depth of our

  2161. own sins.

  2162. if I

  2163. could

  2164. pile

  2165. a piece

  2166. of dirt

  2167. or a

  2168. rock

  2169. or stone

  2170. for every

  2171. sin

  2172. every

  2173. stray

  2174. sinful

  2175. thought

  2176. every

  2177. sinful

  2178. speech

  2179. word

  2180. I've

  2181. said

  2182. every

  2183. sinful

  2184. act

  2185. and pile

  2186. it up

  2187. it will

  2188. be a

  2189. veritable

  2190. mountain.

  2191. How can

  2192. sinners deal

  2193. with that?

  2194. how do

  2195. we

  2196. deal with

  2197. a mountain

  2198. of sin?

  2199. And so

  2200. Jesus comes

  2201. and he

  2202. goes to

  2203. the cross

  2204. he dies

  2205. as our

  2206. substitute

  2207. in our

  2208. place

  2209. because only

  2210. his righteousness

  2211. is sufficient

  2212. to be imputed

  2213. to us for

  2214. our salvation

  2215. because only

  2216. his blood

  2217. is sufficient

  2218. to cleanse

  2219. us of

  2220. all

  2221. unrighteousness.

  2222. And

  2223. I think

  2224. this is a

  2225. common

  2226. malady

  2227. among

  2228. believers

  2229. and sometimes

  2230. among the

  2231. sincerest

  2232. believers

  2233. to be

  2234. insecure

  2235. about our

  2236. assurance

  2237. of salvation

  2238. because

  2239. you're relying

  2240. on these

  2241. good works

  2242. and

  2243. coming

  2244. to God

  2245. not

  2246. faith

  2247. alone

  2248. in

  2249. Jesus

  2250. Christ

  2251. but

  2252. trust

  2253. in

  2254. God

  2255. and

  2256. with

  2257. this

  2258. other

  2259. thing

  2260. I

  2261. went to

  2262. all my

  2263. catechism

  2264. classes

  2265. I

  2266. answered

  2267. all the

  2268. questions

  2269. I

  2270. attend

  2271. all the

  2272. Sunday

  2273. services

  2274. I don't

  2275. miss it

  2276. I read

  2277. the Bible

  2278. every day

  2279. and I

  2280. pray

  2281. and I

  2282. sing

  2283. and when

  2284. I sing

  2285. I raise

  2286. my hands

  2287. and I

  2288. do

  2289. this

  2290. and when

  2291. I sin

  2292. I feel

  2293. really sorry

  2294. about it

  2295. I'm going

  2296. to cry

  2297. and I

  2298. have tears

  2299. and because

  2300. I do

  2301. all these

  2302. things

  2303. and I

  2304. bring

  2305. these

  2306. things

  2307. to God

  2308. God

  2309. will

  2310. accept

  2311. me

  2312. no

  2313. that's

  2314. not how

  2315. it works

  2316. faith

  2317. alone

  2318. bring

  2319. nothing

  2320. along

  2321. come

  2322. empty

  2323. handed

  2324. faith

  2325. alone

  2326. isn't

  2327. that why

  2328. it says

  2329. in Ephesians

  2330. 2

  2331. you're saved

  2332. by grace

  2333. through faith

  2334. and this

  2335. is not

  2336. your own

  2337. doing

  2338. it is

  2339. not a

  2340. result

  2341. of

  2342. works

  2343. it is

  2344. a

  2345. gift

  2346. of

  2347. God

  2348. why

  2349. does

  2350. God

  2351. save

  2352. us

  2353. this

  2354. way

  2355. so

  2356. that

  2357. he

  2358. says

  2359. in

  2360. Ephesians

  2361. 2

  2362. no

  2363. one

  2364. may

  2365. boast

  2366. so

  2367. that

  2368. no

  2369. one

  2370. may

  2371. boast

  2372. if

  2373. you

  2374. come

  2375. with

  2376. this

  2377. trusting

  2378. God

  2379. in

  2380. something

  2381. else

  2382. you

  2383. have

  2384. something

  2385. else

  2386. you

  2387. can

  2388. boast

  2389. about

  2390. but

  2391. if

  2392. you

  2393. come

  2394. to

  2395. God

  2396. empty

  2397. handed

  2398. !

  2399. God

  2400. I

  2401. am

  2402. a

  2403. wretch

  2404. !

  2405. I

  2406. am

  2407. a

  2408. sinner!

  2409. there is

  2410. nothing

  2411. to

  2412. commend

  2413. me

  2414. to

  2415. you

  2416. I

  2417. dare

  2418. not

  2419. trust

  2420. the

  2421. sweetest

  2422. frame

  2423. but

  2424. holy

  2425. trust

  2426. in

  2427. Jesus

  2428. name

  2429. then

  2430. the

  2431. lightning

  2432. bolt

  2433. of

  2434. heaven

  2435. thunders

  2436. in

  2437. to

  2438. cleanse

  2439. and

  2440. move

  2441. that

  2442. mountain

  2443. mountain

  2444. of

  2445. sin

  2446. that's

  2447. why

  2448. faith

  2449. is so

  2450. precious

  2451. let me

  2452. close

  2453. with

  2454. this

  2455. quote

  2456. from

  2457. J.

  2458. A.

  2459. Packer

  2460. the late

  2461. J.

  2462. A.

  2463. Packer

  2464. he says

  2465. one of

  2466. the

  2467. unhealthiest

  2468. features

  2469. of

  2470. protestant

  2471. theology

  2472. today

  2473. is

  2474. its

  2475. preoccupation

  2476. with

  2477. faith

  2478. wait a

  2479. minute

  2480. I'm

  2481. undoing

  2482. everything

  2483. I

  2484. just

  2485. said

  2486. no

  2487. yeah

  2488. faith

  2489. that

  2490. is

  2491. viewed

  2492. man

  2493. centeredly

  2494. as

  2495. a

  2496. state

  2497. of

  2498. existential

  2499. commitment

  2500. inevitably

  2501. this

  2502. preoccupation

  2503. diverts

  2504. thought

  2505. away

  2506. from

  2507. faith's

  2508. object

  2509. even

  2510. when

  2511. this

  2512. is

  2513. clearly

  2514. conceived

  2515. as

  2516. too

  2517. often

  2518. in

  2519. modern

  2520. theology

  2521. it

  2522. is

  2523. not

  2524. though

  2525. the

  2526. reformers

  2527. said

  2528. much

  2529. about

  2530. faith

  2531. even

  2532. to

  2533. the

  2534. point

  2535. of

  2536. calling

  2537. their

  2538. message

  2539. of

  2540. justification

  2541. the

  2542. doctrine

  2543. of

  2544. faith

  2545. their

  2546. interest

  2547. was

  2548. not

  2549. of

  2550. the

  2551. modern

  2552. kind

  2553. it

  2554. was

  2555. not

  2556. subject

  2557. centered

  2558. but

  2559. object

  2560. centered

  2561. not

  2562. psychological

  2563. but

  2564. theological

  2565. not

  2566. anthropocentric

  2567. but

  2568. Christocentric

  2569. the

  2570. reformers

  2571. saw

  2572. faith

  2573. as

  2574. a

  2575. relationship

  2576. not

  2577. to

  2578. oneself

  2579. but

  2580. to

  2581. the

  2582. living

  2583. Christ

  2584. of

  2585. the

  2586. Bible

  2587. and

  2588. they

  2589. fed

  2590. faith

  2591. in

  2592. themselves

  2593. and

  2594. in

  2595. others

  2596. by

  2597. concentrating

  2598. on

  2599. that

  2600. Christ

  2601. as

  2602. a

  2603. savior

  2604. and

  2605. Lord

  2606. by

  2607. whom

  2608. our

  2609. whole

  2610. life

  2611. must

  2612. be

  2613. determined

  2614. are

  2615. you

  2616. guys

  2617. following

  2618. that

  2619. so

  2620. if

  2621. you

  2622. are

  2623. insecure

  2624. this

  2625. morning

  2626. about

  2627. your

  2628. faith

  2629. how

  2630. strong

  2631. is

  2632. my

  2633. faith

  2634. am

  2635. faithful

  2636. enough

  2637. do I

  2638. have

  2639. enough

  2640. faith

  2641. to

  2642. stand

  2643. before

  2644. God

  2645. no

  2646. don't

  2647. rely

  2648. on

  2649. that

  2650. it's

  2651. not

  2652. the

  2653. intensity

  2654. of

  2655. faith

  2656. that

  2657. saves

  2658. you

  2659. it is

  2660. the

  2661. power

  2662. of the

  2663. God

  2664. who is

  2665. the

  2666. object

  2667. of our

  2668. faith

  2669. who saves

  2670. you

  2671. so

  2672. so

  2673. if

  2674. you

  2675. struggle

  2676. with

  2677. assurance

  2678. of

  2679. salvation

  2680. you

  2681. struggle

  2682. with

  2683. doubts

  2684. the

  2685. key

  2686. is

  2687. not

  2688. to

  2689. try

  2690. to

  2691. conjure

  2692. up

  2693. more

  2694. faith

  2695. or

  2696. to

  2697. try

  2698. to

  2699. do

  2700. more

  2701. things

  2702. so

  2703. you

  2704. could

  2705. have

  2706. more

  2707. sureness

  2708. in

  2709. yourself

  2710. no

  2711. the

  2712. solution

  2713. is

  2714. to

  2715. look

  2716. away

  2717. from

  2718. yourself

  2719. and

  2720. look

  2721. only

  2722. at

  2723. Jesus

  2724. Christ

  2725. only

  2726. at

  2727. Jesus

  2728. Christ

  2729. he

  2730. died

  2731. !

  2732. for

  2733. me

  2734. !

  2735. and his

  2736. righteousness

  2737. is

  2738. enough

  2739. his

  2740. blood

  2741. !

  2742. glory

  2743. revealed

  2744. in

  2745. the

  2746. gospel

  2747. of

  2748. Jesus

  2749. Christ

  2750. you'll

  2751. see

  2752. that

  2753. it's

  2754. sufficient

  2755. and

  2756. you'll

  2757. see

  2758. your

  2759. doubts

  2760. fade

  2761. away

  2762. and

  2763. in

  2764. so

  2765. doing

  2766. that

  2767. faith

  2768. becomes

  2769. the

  2770. evidence

  2771. of

  2772. things

  2773. not

  2774. seen

  2775. let's

  2776. pray

  2777. oh

  2778. father

  2779. course

  2780. through

  2781. our

  2782. souls

  2783. our

  2784. minds

  2785. our

  2786. hearts

  2787. with

  2788. the

  2789. power

  2790. of

  2791. your

  2792. Holy

  2793. Spirit

  2794. that

  2795. we

  2796. might

  2797. be

  2798. cut

  2799. to

  2800. the

  2801. heart

  2802. to

  2803. believe

  2804. in

  2805. Jesus

  2806. Christ

  2807. alone

  2808. to

  2809. put

  2810. our

  2811. faith

  2812. in

  2813. Jesus

  2814. Christ

  2815. alone
