  1. We're in Matthew chapter 17, verse 24, going all the way to chapter 18, verse 9.

    Matthew 17:24

  2. The saints of God, to worship you together.

  3. And now to sit under your word as you address us from it.

  4. And we ask God that you would renew our minds and captivate our vision

  5. with this unique vision that Jesus set out for his church,

  6. for the community of his people,

  7. characterized by those who are childlike in their humility, their dependence,

  8. who treat each other with much love and respect because of whom we represent.

  9. Father, won't you even in this time, this morning,

  10. work powerfully within us by your spirit and make us a little bit more like that.

  11. And a little bit more like Christ.

  12. In Jesus' name we ask. Amen.

  13. Please stand if you are able to honor God as we read from his word, Matthew 17, 24.

  14. When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two drachma tax went up to Peter and said,

  15. Does your teacher not pay the tax?

  16. He said, Yes.

  17. And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying,

  18. What do you think, Simon?

  19. From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax?

  20. From their sons or from others?

  21. And when he said, From others, Jesus said to him,

  22. Then the sons are free.

  23. However, not to give offense to them,

  24. go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up.

  25. And when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel.

  26. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.

  27. At that time, the disciples came to Jesus, saying,

  28. Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

  29. And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said,

  30. Truly I say to you, unless you turn and become like children,

  31. you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  32. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  33. Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.

  34. But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,

  35. it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck

  36. and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

  37. Woe to the world for temptations to sin,

  38. for it is necessary that temptations come,

  39. but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes.

  40. And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin,

  41. cut it off and throw it away.

  42. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame

  43. than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.

  44. And if your eye causes you to sin,

  45. tear it out and throw it away.

  46. It is better for you to enter life with one eye

  47. than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.

  48. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  49. Please be seated.

  50. Politics is inevitable

  51. because politics is about how people relate to each other

  52. and live together in society.

  53. Wherever there is a community of people dwelling together,

  54. you're going to encounter politics.

  55. What makes politics distasteful to so many people, however,

  56. is the sin that taints all earthly politics.

  57. Selfish ambition, authoritarianism, rivalry, envy,

  58. factions, rebellion, insubordination.

  59. Because humans are sinful,

  60. you see these sins and temptations at every level of society,

  61. in city governments, state governments,

  62. in federal governments.

  63. You see it in corporations and schools

  64. and even, unfortunately,

  65. in local churches and denominations,

  66. though if they are healthy churches to far less degrees.

  67. In our passage, Jesus casts a new vision

  68. for Christian community that is founded on humility,

  69. on humble self-regard for others

  70. rather than on prideful self-seeking.

  71. But the realization of this grand vision

  72. depends on a radical reorientation of our perspectives.

  73. It requires a heavenly, eternal perspective

  74. rather than an earthly and temporal one.

  75. And according to this perspective,

  76. children are the greatest.

  77. According to this perspective,

  78. the nobodies are the somebodies.

  79. And according to this perspective,

  80. the crippled and the lame

  81. might be better off than the whole and able-bodied.

  82. As I've been saying throughout my sermon series

  83. in the Gospel of Matthew,

  84. this book is organized around

  85. five major discourses of Jesus,

  86. the teaching discourses of Jesus.

  87. We are now on the fourth one

  88. where Jesus talks about Christian relations.

  89. We know where the discourse kind of ends

  90. because at the end of each discourse,

  91. it has something along the lines

  92. of when Jesus had finished these sayings,

  93. and we find that here in chapter 19, verse 1.

  94. And so this is the beginning of Jesus' fourth discourse,

  95. which focuses on Christian relations,

  96. but more specifically on how sin

  97. affects those relationships

  98. and how we ought to deal with that.

  99. Usually people mark chapter 18

  100. as beginning the mark of this new section in discourse,

  101. but I'm treating 17, 24 to 27

  102. as being a part of this passage

  103. for two main reasons.

  104. One, in chapter 18, verse 1,

  105. the phrase, at that time,

  106. specifically marks what follows in chapter 18

  107. and links it back to what happened just before.

  108. It's happening at the same time

  109. as the conversation that took place in 17, 24 to 27.

  110. Two, this whole section has a common thread

  111. that runs through it all,

  112. and that's the Greek word skandalon,

  113. where we get the English word scandal from.

  114. It's a word that means a stumbling block,

  115. causing offense or causing someone else to stumble,

  116. causing them to sin,

  117. to make them trip and fall.

  118. In 1727, the word translated giving offense

  119. is that same word.

  120. We see the same word again in 18.6

  121. when it's translated as causing someone to sin.

  122. And the same word appears repeatedly

  123. in chapter 18, verses 7 to 9,

  124. whether it's translated as temptation to sin

  125. or things that cause you to sin.

  126. Jesus is teaching us about the gravity of sin

  127. and why we should take utmost care

  128. to ensure that we don't put stumbling blocks

  129. in front of people as we relate to each other.

  130. So my main point of this morning is this,

  131. remove every stumbling block

  132. that prevents people, including you,

  133. from entering the kingdom of heaven.

  134. My outline's a little bit abstract,

  135. but first I'm gonna start talking

  136. about the subjective stumbling blocks,

  137. secondly about the objective stumbling blocks,

  138. and lastly about personal stumbling blocks,

  139. which I'll explain what they mean.

  140. I'm gonna focus the majority of my time

  141. on the first section

  142. because the latter two sections have,

  143. those themes have already been touched on

  144. in this series

  145. and will be touched on again and again

  146. in the coming passages.

  147. In 17, 24 to 27,

  148. Jesus first talks about subjective stumbling blocks,

  149. and we are told in verse 24

  150. that Jesus and his disciples

  151. are passing through the Jewish region

  152. of Capernaum once again,

  153. and when in Capernaum,

  154. usually Jesus and his disciples

  155. made Peter's house their home base.

  156. We saw that early in chapter 8, verse 14.

  157. So they're presumably at Peter's house again,

  158. which may explain why when these people

  159. come to collect the two drachma tacks,

  160. they address Peter in particular.

  161. Does your teacher not pay the tax?

  162. They don't address the other disciples,

  163. just Peter,

  164. and later Jesus only pays for himself and Peter.

  165. This is Peter's house,

  166. and I think that's why that's happening.

  167. While they're at it

  168. and asking Peter about that question,

  169. they want to know what Jesus' opinion is,

  170. what his view is on the temple tax.

  171. Jesus is already at this point

  172. quite a well-known, famous teacher

  173. and miracle worker,

  174. and so they wonder,

  175. does your teacher not think

  176. that we should pay this temple tax?

  177. The collectors of the two drachma tax

  178. approached Peter and asked this question,

  179. and the two drachma tax

  180. is the half-shekel temple tax

  181. that was levied on adults,

  182. all adult Jewish males.

  183. If you've been following along

  184. in the Bible reading plan

  185. that we've recommended to the whole church,

  186. you may have read this past week,

  187. Exodus 30, verses 11 to 16.

    Exodus 30:11–16

  188. And if you read that,

  189. that's where it talks about the census tax,

  190. and the census tax of Exodus 30

  191. is what's called the atonement money.

  192. This was meant to be a ransom to the Lord

  193. for your life.

  194. So by collecting this census tax

  195. for everyone in Israel,

  196. for every adult male representative,

  197. they were supposed to signify

  198. that all of our life belongs to God.

  199. He's the one who has ransomed us,

  200. and the money that was collected in that way

  201. was used for the administration

  202. and the upkeep of the Tent of Meeting,

  203. their tabernacle,

  204. before the construction of the physical temple.

  205. So even though the census tax

  206. when it was first levied

  207. was meant to be a one-time tax,

  208. once-a-life tax,

  209. the Jews used that rationale

  210. to justify the annual temple tax

  211. for the upkeep of the temple building.

  212. And unlike the Roman tax,

  213. which the Jews universally resented

  214. because it was being imposed by these occupiers,

  215. many Jews saw this temple tax

  216. as a patriotic and religious duty.

  217. So the collector's question

  218. is phrased in a way

  219. that expects a positive answer,

  220. an affirmative answer.

  221. Does your teacher not pay the tax?

  222. Surely he does, right?

  223. If he really is a Jewish prophet,

  224. what's his view of the matter?

  225. Their suspicion that Jesus

  226. might not pay this tax,

  227. I think is well warranted

  228. based on the body of Jesus' teaching

  229. up to this point.

  230. In Matthew 12, 6,

  231. Jesus said to his disciples,

  232. I tell you,

  233. something greater than the temple is here,

  234. referring to himself.

  235. And later on in chapter 21,

  236. when he is in the Jerusalem temple,

  237. he will overthrow and overturn

  238. the tables of the money changers

  239. who are changing money

  240. so that people can pay,

  241. among other things,

  242. this two drachma tax.

  243. And Jesus says,

  244. it is written,

  245. my house shall be called

  246. the house of prayer,

  247. but you make it a den of robbers.

  248. Matthew 21, 13.

  249. And then still later in chapter 24,

  250. Jesus will prophesy of the downfall

  251. and the destruction

  252. of the Jerusalem temple.

  253. And he says in John 2, 19,

  254. destroy this temple,

  255. referring to his body,

  256. himself as the new

  257. spiritual temple of God.

  258. Destroy this body,

  259. and in three days,

  260. I will raise it up.

  261. So if you examine the full body

  262. of Jesus' teaching,

  263. the Jerusalem temple

  264. is going to one day soon

  265. become obsolete.

  266. So perhaps these tax collectors

  267. are catching the drift

  268. of what Jesus is saying,

  269. and they ask,

  270. does your teacher not pay the tax?

  271. And Peter,

  272. as he has the habit of doing,

  273. blurts out the answer

  274. before he has even had a chance

  275. to get Jesus' mind on the issue.

  276. Yes.

  277. Yes, of course.

  278. That's what he means.

  279. Yes, of course he pays

  280. the temple tax.

  281. I mean, come on,

  282. what kind of question is that?

  283. And then he goes into the house

  284. thinking, okay,

  285. I better check with Jesus

  286. about this.

  287. But before he checks with Jesus,

  288. Jesus knows what's on his mind.

  289. He says,

  290. when he came into the house,

  291. Jesus spoke to him first.

  292. He already knows

  293. what's on Peter's mind.

  294. What do you think, Simon?

  295. From whom do kings of the earth

  296. take toll or tax?

  297. From their sons

  298. or from others?

  299. And when Peter responds,

  300. from others,

  301. Jesus says to him,

  302. then the sons are free.

  303. Every earthly ruler

  304. levies tax,

  305. you know,

  306. because in order to rule

  307. and govern,

  308. you need revenue.

  309. However,

  310. some powerful empires

  311. like the Roman Empire

  312. primarily taxed

  313. outsiders and foreigners

  314. because they had conquered

  315. so much territory

  316. they could sustain

  317. the running of their empire

  318. without taxing

  319. their own citizens.

  320. They could just tax

  321. their subjects.

  322. So that might be what

  323. Jesus is referring to here.

  324. But even more specifically,

  325. even kingdoms that can't afford

  326. to sustain themselves

  327. by simply taxing outsiders

  328. and must tax

  329. their own citizens,

  330. when they tax

  331. their own citizens,

  332. they don't tax

  333. the king's children.

  334. The king's kids,

  335. their family,

  336. are exempt

  337. from the tax.

  338. And that's the point

  339. Jesus is making.

  340. From whom do kings

  341. of the earth

  342. take toll or tax?

  343. From their sons

  344. or from others?

  345. Of course it's from others.

  346. And this raises

  347. the natural question

  348. in the case of the temple tax,

  349. who is the ruler

  350. levying the temple tax?

  351. No human being

  352. could rightly claim

  353. to be the ruler

  354. of the temple of God

  355. because that's

  356. the house of God.

  357. If God is the ruler

  358. of the temple,

  359. who then are his sons?

  360. Twice already

  361. at Jesus' baptism

  362. and at his transfiguration,

  363. God the Father

  364. has declared authoritatively

  365. that Jesus

  366. is his beloved son

  367. with whom he is

  368. well pleased.

  369. And repeatedly

  370. throughout the Gospel

  371. of Matthew,

  372. Jesus has referred

  373. to God as my father.

  374. So Jesus has confirmed

  375. his divine sonship

  376. and he's referring

  377. to that.

  378. If God is the ruler

  379. of this temple

  380. and he is my father

  381. and I am his son,

  382. the temple tax

  383. does not apply to me.

  384. And that's not all.

  385. Jesus says in verse 26,

  386. then the sons are free.

  387. He uses the plural word,

  388. sons.

  389. Who else can claim

  390. to be the sons of God?

  391. By virtue of their relation

  392. to Jesus,

  393. his disciples

  394. were also given

  395. the privilege

  396. of calling God

  397. as their father,

  398. praying to him

  399. as our father,

  400. as Jesus taught them.

  401. And so Jesus said

  402. in Matthew 5,

  403. 44 to 45,

  404. love your enemies

  405. and pray for those

  406. who persecute you

  407. so you may be sons

  408. of your father

  409. who is in heaven.

  410. So sometimes Jesus refers

  411. to when he is addressing

  412. the disciples,

  413. he refers to God the father

  414. as your father.

  415. And all of us,

  416. all of us who are

  417. in Christ Jesus

  418. through faith

  419. are sons of God.

  420. He says in Galatians 3, 26

  421. and uses the language

  422. of sons to indicate

  423. that we are all

  424. heirs of God.

  425. We all have an inheritance

  426. in God's kingdom.

  427. Those who are members

  428. of God's family

  429. through faith in Jesus

  430. therefore should be

  431. exempt,

  432. free from this temple tax.

  433. So neither Jesus

  434. nor Peter

  435. has to pay this tax.

  436. It's a foolproof argument.

  437. Imagine a lowly servant,

  438. a tax collector

  439. who is going around towns

  440. and collecting

  441. the king's taxes

  442. unknowingly going up

  443. to the crown prince

  444. of the kingdom

  445. and telling him,

  446. hey lad,

  447. pay your tax.

  448. And then the son says,

  449. excuse me,

  450. do you know who I am?

  451. However,

  452. Jesus continues

  453. in verse 27,

  454. not to give offense

  455. to them.

  456. Go to the sea

  457. and cast a hook

  458. and take the first fish

  459. that comes up

  460. and when you open

  461. its mouth

  462. you will find a shekel.

  463. Take that

  464. and give it to them

  465. for me and for yourself.

  466. Jesus knows

  467. that there's a fish

  468. that has swallowed

  469. a Jewish shekel

  470. and that will be

  471. the first fish

  472. that Peter catches

  473. and one shekel

  474. is equivalent

  475. to two Roman denarii

  476. which is two days

  477. worth of wages

  478. for a common Roman worker

  479. which is the equivalent

  480. of the four Greek drachmas

  481. necessary to pay

  482. for two people's temple tax,

  483. both Jesus and Peter.

  484. It's fascinating

  485. and instructive

  486. that Jesus gives Peter

  487. instructions

  488. to pay the temple tax

  489. despite the fact

  490. that he just demonstrated

  491. that he doesn't need

  492. to pay the temple tax.

  493. There is no theological

  494. or biblical obligation

  495. to pay the temple tax.

  496. Their payment

  497. of this temple tax

  498. is a humble accommodation.

  499. They are accommodating

  500. the tax collectors

  501. and other Jews

  502. who believe

  503. that it is not only lawful

  504. but pious

  505. and pleasing to God

  506. to pay this tax

  507. for the maintenance

  508. of the temple.

  509. So they are doing this

  510. not to give offense

  511. to or to not

  512. to cause them

  513. to stumble.

  514. For Jesus

  515. and his disciples

  516. who are the sons of God

  517. it is no sin

  518. not to pay the temple tax.

  519. However,

  520. for these other Jews

  521. who are collecting the tax

  522. and who are watching

  523. what Jesus will do

  524. regarding his temple tax

  525. for them

  526. it would be sinful

  527. to not pay this

  528. because it would be

  529. in their mind

  530. neglecting the house of God

  531. failing to honor God

  532. consigning the house of God

  533. to disrepair

  534. and not prioritizing

  535. the worship

  536. and the sacrifices

  537. that are offered

  538. at the temple of God.

  539. This is where

  540. it's important for us

  541. to distinguish

  542. between objective sins

  543. and subjective sins.

  544. In Romans 14

  545. Paul contrasts

  546. a Christian

  547. who has a weak conscience

  548. who believes

  549. because of his weak conscience

  550. that it is wrong

  551. to eat meat

  552. or to drink wine.

  553. And the Christian

  554. with a strong conscience

  555. on the other hand

  556. believes that it's totally fine

  557. to eat meat

  558. and to drink wine.

  559. The former eats only vegetables

  560. and abstains from meat

  561. the latter eats meat

  562. to his heart's content.

  563. However,

  564. in this situation

  565. Paul instructs the Christian

  566. with the stronger conscience

  567. never to put

  568. a stumbling block

  569. or hindrance

  570. in the way of a brother.

  571. For if your brother

  572. is grieved

  573. by what you eat

  574. you are no longer

  575. walking in love

  576. and so by what you eat

  577. do not destroy

  578. the one for whom

  579. Christ died.

  580. This is Romans 14

  581. 13 and 15.

  582. Paul says

  583. he is himself convinced

  584. that no food

  585. is unclean

  586. and that it is perfectly fine

  587. to eat meat

  588. and drink wine.

  589. Nevertheless,

  590. for the Christian

  591. who is not convinced

  592. of that

  593. and has doubts

  594. about that

  595. the Christian

  596. who thinks

  597. that it might be sinful

  598. for him to eat meat

  599. if he eats it

  600. that's sin for him.

  601. Why?

  602. Romans 14 23

  603. whoever has doubts

  604. is condemned

  605. if he eats

  606. because the eating

  607. is not from faith

  608. for whatever

  609. does not proceed

  610. from faith

  611. is sin.

  612. What does

  613. Paul mean by that?

  614. Eating meat

  615. is not objectively sinful.

  616. However,

  617. it is subjectively sinful

  618. for those who believe

  619. that it is sinful

  620. and do it anyway.

  621. If he eats it

  622. he is eating

  623. against his own conscience.

  624. He is doing

  625. what he believes

  626. is sinful

  627. what he believes

  628. offends

  629. and displeases God.

  630. Therefore,

  631. he is no longer

  632. acting out of faith

  633. and obedience

  634. but out of unbelief

  635. and disobedience.

  636. I think it's wrong

  637. to eat meat

  638. but who cares

  639. I'm going to do it anyway.

  640. what's God

  641. going to do about it?

  642. A whole bunch

  643. of people

  644. do it anyway.

  645. For that person

  646. it is sin

  647. to eat meat

  648. for whatever

  649. does not proceed

  650. from faith

  651. is sin.

  652. It follows

  653. from this then

  654. that if the person

  655. with the stronger

  656. conscience

  657. flaunts his freedom

  658. and eats meat

  659. in front of this

  660. other person

  661. with the weaker

  662. conscience

  663. he is actually

  664. inadvertently

  665. tempting this person

  666. to sin.

  667. he is putting

  668. a stumbling block

  669. in the way

  670. of a brother

  671. and putting

  672. a stumbling block

  673. in front of a Christian

  674. brother or sister

  675. is itself sinful

  676. because that

  677. Paul says

  678. is unloving.

  679. Romans 14, 15

  680. for if your brother

  681. is grieved by what you eat

  682. you are no longer

  683. walking in love.

  684. So the Christian

  685. with a weaker conscience

  686. who eats meat

  687. sins

  688. because his action

  689. does not proceed

  690. from faith.

  691. The Christian

  692. with the stronger conscience

  693. who eats meat

  694. in front of that

  695. weaker brother

  696. sins

  697. because his action

  698. does not proceed

  699. from love.

  700. You guys following?

  701. Paul addresses

  702. a similar situation

  703. in 1 Corinthians 8 and 10.

  704. Should Christians

  705. eat food

  706. sold at marketplaces

  707. that had previously

  708. been offered

  709. to idols?

  710. Paul says

  711. an idol has no

  712. real existence

  713. whatsoever there is

  714. since there is

  715. no God but one.

  716. And for people

  717. who understand

  718. that it is no sin

  719. to eat food

  720. that had previously

  721. been offered

  722. to idols

  723. as long as

  724. you are not

  725. actively participating

  726. in idolatrous

  727. worship

  728. which is demonic.

  729. However,

  730. Paul continues

  731. not all

  732. possess this knowledge.

  733. There are some

  734. people in Paul's day

  735. who came out

  736. of that kind

  737. of idolatry

  738. who still think

  739. that there is

  740. something real

  741. happening

  742. in that meat

  743. that has been

  744. offered to an idol

  745. that is associated

  746. with idols

  747. that it belongs

  748. to an idol

  749. and so they feel

  750. this pang

  751. of their conscience

  752. to not eat it.

  753. And for such people

  754. to eat that food

  755. that had been

  756. sacrificed to an idol

  757. Paul says

  758. is that it defiles

  759. their conscience.

  760. So Paul warns

  761. the people

  762. with stronger conscience

  763. take care

  764. that this right

  765. of yours

  766. does not somehow

  767. become a stumbling

  768. block to the weak.

  769. If they see you

  770. eating food

  771. offered to idols

  772. and then they

  773. follow your example

  774. they themselves

  775. lack the faith

  776. and the knowledge

  777. that this food

  778. is fine to eat

  779. that the idols

  780. are nothing

  781. but they follow

  782. your example in it.

  783. their conscience

  784. is defiled

  785. and they've become

  786. entangled in sin.

  787. You have

  788. in effect

  789. made them stumble

  790. and fall

  791. into sin.

  792. So Paul

  793. himself says

  794. this is his own

  795. avowal

  796. he says

  797. if food makes

  798. my brother stumble

  799. I will never

  800. eat meat

  801. lest I make

  802. my brother stumble.

  803. Imagine making

  804. that kind of declaration.

  805. it's quite a sacrifice

  806. for all you meat lovers

  807. out there.

  808. But this raises

  809. a question

  810. why should

  811. my liberty

  812. be restricted

  813. by someone

  814. else's conscience?

  815. Paul anticipates

  816. that exact question

  817. in 1 Corinthians 10

    1 Corinthians 10:29

  818. verse 29

  819. and this is his answer.

  820. Whether you eat

  821. or drink

  822. or whatever you do

  823. do all

  824. to the glory

  825. of God.

  826. Give no offense

  827. to Jews

  828. or to Greeks

  829. or to the church

  830. of God

  831. just as I try

  832. to please

  833. everyone

  834. in everything

  835. I do

  836. not seeking

  837. my own advantage

  838. but that of many

  839. that they may be

  840. saved.

  841. Wait a minute

  842. Paul just admitted

  843. that he tries

  844. to please

  845. everyone

  846. in everything

  847. he does.

  848. Isn't that

  849. the definition

  850. of a people

  851. pleaser?

  852. Isn't that

  853. a bad thing?

  854. Why should

  855. I change

  856. how I live

  857. based on

  858. other people's

  859. concerns?

  860. Why should I

  861. give up

  862. my freedoms

  863. for them?

  864. This idea

  865. of foregoing

  866. our rights

  867. for the love

  868. of others

  869. and accommodating

  870. other people's

  871. weaker consciences

  872. goes against

  873. the grain

  874. of our culture.

  875. Think about

  876. how many times

  877. you have

  878. uncritically

  879. adopted

  880. these

  881. mantras

  882. of

  883. popular

  884. therapy speak.

  885. Don't live

  886. for other people.

  887. Be your

  888. authentic

  889. true self.

  890. You don't

  891. owe anyone

  892. anything.

  893. Protect

  894. your peace.

  895. Set

  896. boundaries.

  897. Set

  898. boundaries.

  899. Our culture

  900. has gone

  901. well beyond

  902. simply trying

  903. to avoid

  904. being controlled

  905. by others.

  906. Now we don't

  907. even want

  908. to be

  909. concerned

  910. by others.

  911. Doing

  912. concerns,

  913. doing things

  914. out of concern

  915. for others

  916. because we

  917. feel that

  918. that is

  919. what we

  920. should do

  921. is not

  922. viewed as

  923. a threat

  924. to authenticity

  925. because we

  926. should really

  927. only do

  928. what we

  929. ourselves

  930. want to

  931. do.

  932. And

  933. telling people

  934. to bear

  935. that kind

  936. of emotional

  937. burden

  938. for the

  939. sake of

  940. other

  941. people

  942. is seen

  943. as a

  944. form of

  945. manipulation.

  946. Externally

  947. imposed

  948. expectations

  949. and obligations

  950. are automatically

  951. suspect in

  952. our culture.

  953. This

  954. kind of

  955. thinking

  956. has in

  957. fact

  958. become

  959. so

  960. pervasive

  961. that it

  962. almost

  963. feels

  964. intuitive.

  965. But

  966. this kind

  967. of thinking

  968. is rooted

  969. in

  970. 18th

  971. century

  972. romantic

  973. philosophy

  974. of

  975. Jean-Jacques

  976. Rousseau

  977. who

  978. taught

  979. that we

  980. must

  981. be

  982. true

  983. to

  984. our

  985. internal

  986. feelings

  987. and

  988. resist

  989. conforming

  990. to

  991. external

  992. expectations.

  993. This

  994. kind of

  995. thinking

  996. is rooted

  997. in

  998. 19th

  999. century

  1000. Sigmund

  1001. !

  1002. Freud

  1003. who

  1004. taught

  1005. that

  1006. psychological

  1007. unhealth

  1008. comes

  1009. from

  1010. among

  1011. other

  1012. things

  1013. letting

  1014. your

  1015. reality

  1016. be

  1017. defined

  1018. by

  1019. and

  1020. restricted

  1021. by

  1022. your

  1023. super

  1024. ego

  1025. which

  1026. is

  1027. your

  1028. moral

  1029. conscience

  1030. representing

  1031. the

  1032. internalized

  1033. societal

  1034. and

  1035. parental

  1036. expectations.

  1037. This

  1038. kind

  1039. of

  1040. thinking

  1041. is

  1042. rooted

  1043. in

  1044. 20th

  1045. century

  1046. Abraham

  1047. Maslow

  1048. who

  1049. taught

  1050. that

  1051. self

  1052. actualization

  1053. involves

  1054. becoming

  1055. one's

  1056. own

  1057. true

  1058. self

  1059. rather

  1060. than

  1061. living

  1062. to meet

  1063. the

  1064. expectations

  1065. and demands

  1066. of others.

  1067. It's

  1068. this

  1069. kind

  1070. of

  1071. thinking

  1072. that

  1073. has

  1074. given

  1075. rise

  1076. to

  1077. the

  1078. radical

  1079. expressive

  1080. individualism

  1081. of our

  1082. age.

  1083. This

  1084. kind

  1085. of

  1086. thinking

  1087. does

  1088. not

  1089. come

  1090. from

  1091. the

  1092. Bible.

  1093. Now

  1094. please

  1095. don't hear

  1096. what I'm

  1097. not saying.

  1098. I'm

  1099. not

  1100. saying

  1101. that

  1102. you

  1103. should

  1104. live

  1105. enslaved

  1106. to

  1107. other

  1108. people's

  1109. opinions

  1110. and

  1111. expectations.

  1112. Far

  1113. from it.

  1114. Having

  1115. concern

  1116. for other

  1117. people

  1118. is not

  1119. the same

  1120. thing

  1121. as being

  1122. controlled

  1123. by other

  1124. people.

  1125. Living

  1126. out of

  1127. the fear

  1128. of man,

  1129. being

  1130. controlled

  1131. by what

  1132. they perceive

  1133. of you,

  1134. what they

  1135. think of

  1136. you,

  1137. and wanting

  1138. to do

  1139. everything

  1140. you can

  1141. to please

  1142. them,

  1143. living

  1144. out of

  1145. the fear

  1146. of man

  1147. is

  1148. night and

  1149. day

  1150. different

  1151. from

  1152. living

  1153. out of

  1154. the fear

  1155. of God

  1156. and the

  1157. love

  1158. of man.

  1159. The

  1160. secular

  1161. culture's

  1162. antidote

  1163. to the

  1164. fear of

  1165. man

  1166. is love

  1167. of self.

  1168. But the

  1169. Bible's

  1170. antidote to

  1171. the fear

  1172. of man

  1173. is the

  1174. fear of

  1175. God

  1176. and the

  1177. love

  1178. of neighbor.

  1179. Do you

  1180. see the

  1181. difference?

  1182. God

  1183. is the

  1184. God.

  1185. That's

  1186. what

  1187. Christianity

  1188. is all

  1189. about.

  1190. Faith

  1191. working

  1192. through

  1193. love.

  1194. The

  1195. aim of

  1196. our

  1197. charge

  1198. is love

  1199. that

  1200. issues

  1201. from a

  1202. pure

  1203. heart

  1204. and a

  1205. good

  1206. conscience

  1207. and a

  1208. sincere

  1209. faith.

  1210. When

  1211. we are

  1212. transformed

  1213. from the

  1214. inside out

  1215. by the

  1216. love of

  1217. Christ,

  1218. we have

  1219. the power

  1220. to

  1221. selflessly

  1222. serve

  1223. others

  1224. and to

  1225. accommodate

  1226. even our

  1227. weaker

  1228. brothers and

  1229. sisters with

  1230. weaker

  1231. consciences.

  1232. This is

  1233. what Paul is

  1234. talking about

  1235. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 9:19

  1236. 9 verse

  1237. 19.

  1238. For

  1239. although I

  1240. am free

  1241. from all,

  1242. I'm free

  1243. from all,

  1244. he says,

  1245. I have

  1246. made myself

  1247. a servant

  1248. to all

  1249. that I

  1250. might win

  1251. more of

  1252. them.

  1253. Martin

  1254. Luther

  1255. captures this

  1256. paradox in

  1257. his book,

  1258. The Freedom

  1259. of a

  1260. Christian.

  1261. A

  1262. Christian

  1263. is a

  1264. perfectly

  1265. free

  1266. lord of

  1267. all,

  1268. subject

  1269. to none.

  1270. A

  1271. Christian

  1272. is a

  1273. perfectly

  1274. dutiful

  1275. servant

  1276. of all,

  1277. subject

  1278. to all.

  1279. earlier

  1280. on in

  1281. chapter 15

  1282. when Jesus

  1283. taught that

  1284. it is not

  1285. what goes

  1286. into the

  1287. mouth but

  1288. what comes

  1289. out of

  1290. the mouth

  1291. that defiles

  1292. a person,

  1293. the disciples

  1294. kindly informed

  1295. Jesus that

  1296. the Pharisees

  1297. were offended

  1298. when they

  1299. heard this

  1300. saying.

  1301. And that

  1302. word offended

  1303. is actually

  1304. the same

  1305. word that's

  1306. used in our

  1307. passage to

  1308. cause someone

  1309. to stumble.

  1310. Jesus

  1311. made the

  1312. Pharisees

  1313. stumble.

  1314. So Jesus

  1315. at times

  1316. had no

  1317. qualms

  1318. whatsoever

  1319. about

  1320. making

  1321. certain

  1322. people

  1323. stumble.

  1324. So why

  1325. does he

  1326. take a

  1327. different

  1328. approach

  1329. here with

  1330. these

  1331. two

  1332. drachma

  1333. tax

  1334. collectors?

  1335. Because

  1336. there

  1337. previously

  1338. Jesus

  1339. was

  1340. teaching

  1341. on the

  1342. fundamental

  1343. inside

  1344. out

  1345. principle

  1346. of the

  1347. gospel

  1348. and in

  1349. order to

  1350. confront

  1351. the

  1352. Pharisees

  1353. self

  1354. righteousness

  1355. and

  1356. outside

  1357. in

  1358. legalism

  1359. there

  1360. was

  1361. no

  1362. way

  1363. to

  1364. avoid

  1365. scandal.

  1366. There's

  1367. no

  1368. way

  1369. to

  1370. avoid

  1371. putting

  1372. a

  1373. stumbling

  1374. block

  1375. in

  1376. front

  1377. of

  1378. these

  1379. Pharisees.

  1380. However

  1381. here

  1382. this

  1383. morning

  1384. in our

  1385. passage

  1386. what's

  1387. at stake

  1388. is not

  1389. a

  1390. fundamental

  1391. gospel

  1392. principle.

  1393. Some

  1394. sincere

  1395. Jews

  1396. who

  1397. believe

  1398. that

  1399. faithful

  1400. God

  1401. honoring

  1402. Jews

  1403. should

  1404. pay

  1405. the

  1406. temple

  1407. tax

  1408. are

  1409. asking

  1410. whether

  1411. or not

  1412. Jesus

  1413. pays

  1414. the

  1415. temple

  1416. tax

  1417. because

  1418. they

  1419. just

  1420. don't

  1421. know

  1422. better

  1423. yet

  1424. and

  1425. Jesus

  1426. does

  1427. not

  1428. want

  1429. to

  1430. cause

  1431. them

  1432. to

  1433. stumble.

  1434. Jesus

  1435. don't

  1436. value

  1437. the

  1438. temple

  1439. or

  1440. don't

  1441. value

  1442. the

  1443. worship

  1444. or

  1445. the

  1446. sacrifice

  1447. of

  1448. God

  1449. the

  1450. very

  1451. things

  1452. that

  1453. point

  1454. to

  1455. Jesus

  1456. ultimate

  1457. sacrifice

  1458. on the

  1459. cross.

  1460. So it

  1461. requires

  1462. wisdom and

  1463. discernment

  1464. to know

  1465. when

  1466. you take

  1467. what

  1468. approach.

  1469. You see

  1470. the same

  1471. adaptation

  1472. in Apostle

  1473. Paul and

  1474. I think

  1475. the reason

  1476. why Apostle

  1477. Paul has

  1478. these kinds

  1479. of

  1480. teachings

  1481. !

  1482. in

  1483. Romans

  1484. 14

  1485. and

  1486. 1

  1487. Corinthians

  1488. 10

  1489. and

  1490. other

  1491. places

  1492. is

  1493. because

  1494. Jesus

  1495. taught

  1496. this.

  1497. In

  1498. Acts

    Acts 16:3

  1499. chapter

  1500. 16

  1501. verse 3

  1502. when

  1503. he

  1504. is

  1505. traveling

  1506. and

  1507. ministering

  1508. in

  1509. Jewish

  1510. cities

  1511. he

  1512. circumcises

  1513. his

  1514. apprentice

  1515. Timothy.

  1516. Why

  1517. does

  1518. he

  1519. do

  1520. it?

  1521. Because

  1522. he

  1523. doesn't

  1524. want

  1525. to

  1526. cause

  1527. the

  1528. Jews

  1529. to

  1530. stumble

  1531. because

  1532. the

  1533. Jews

  1534. were

  1535. aware

  1536. that

  1537. Timothy

  1538. had

  1539. a

  1540. Jewish

  1541. mother

  1542. but

  1543. he

  1544. had

  1545. a

  1546. Greek

  1547. father

  1548. a

  1549. Gentile

  1550. father.

  1551. So

  1552. they

  1553. didn't

  1554. want

  1555. people

  1556. to

  1557. think

  1558. that

  1559. Timothy

  1560. was

  1561. this

  1562. lawless

  1563. faithless

  1564. Jew

  1565. who

  1566. just

  1567. flaunts

  1568. just

  1569. openly

  1570. disobeys

  1571. the law

  1572. of God.

  1573. So

  1574. he

  1575. circumcised

  1576. Timothy.

  1577. However

  1578. later on

  1579. in

  1580. Galatians

  1581. 2

  1582. 3

  1583. to

  1584. 5

  1585. when

  1586. the

  1587. Judaizers

  1588. who

  1589. insist

  1590. that

  1591. Gentile

  1592. converts

  1593. to

  1594. Christianity

  1595. must

  1596. become

  1597. a Jew

  1598. by

  1599. getting

  1600. circumcised

  1601. and

  1602. they

  1603. start

  1604. to

  1605. pressure

  1606. Paul

  1607. and

  1608. people

  1609. who

  1610. are

  1611. with

  1612. him

  1613. to

  1614. therefore

  1615. circumcise

  1616. Titus

  1617. who

  1618. is a

  1619. Gentile

  1620. convert

  1621. to

  1622. Christianity

  1623. Paul

  1624. says

  1625. here

  1626. in

  1627. Galatians

  1628. 2

  1629. we

  1630. did

  1631. not

  1632. yield

  1633. in

  1634. submission

  1635. even

  1636. for

  1637. a

  1638. moment

  1639. so

  1640. that

  1641. the

  1642. truth

  1643. of

  1644. the

  1645. gospel

  1646. might

  1647. be

  1648. preserved

  1649. for

  1650. you.

  1651. Completely

  1652. to

  1653. completely

  1654. different

  1655. responses.

  1656. Why?

  1657. Because

  1658. in one

  1659. situation

  1660. the

  1661. gospel

  1662. is

  1663. at

  1664. stake

  1665. in

  1666. the

  1667. other

  1668. situation

  1669. it

  1670. is

  1671. not.

  1672. So

  1673. you

  1674. can

  1675. accommodate

  1676. others

  1677. and give

  1678. up your

  1679. own

  1680. preferences

  1681. and

  1682. freedoms.

  1683. Jesus

  1684. and the

  1685. apostles

  1686. followed

  1687. they

  1688. operated

  1689. on

  1690. higher

  1691. principles

  1692. of

  1693. fear

  1694. of

  1695. God

  1696. love

  1697. of

  1698. neighbor

  1699. and

  1700. the

  1701. stewardship

  1702. of

  1703. the

  1704. gospel.

  1705. Love

  1706. is a

  1707. higher

  1708. value

  1709. than

  1710. individual

  1711. freedom

  1712. and

  1713. autonomy.

  1714. Christian

  1715. love

  1716. demands

  1717. that

  1718. we

  1719. sometimes

  1720. forego

  1721. our

  1722. rights

  1723. for

  1724. the

  1725. sake

  1726. of

  1727. others

  1728. rather

  1729. than

  1730. insisting

  1731. on

  1732. our

  1733. rights

  1734. at

  1735. the

  1736. expense

  1737. of

  1738. others.

  1739. So

  1740. you

  1741. might

  1742. understand

  1743. for

  1744. example

  1745. that

  1746. it's

  1747. no

  1748. sin

  1749. to

  1750. drink

  1751. alcohol

  1752. but

  1753. if

  1754. your

  1755. Christian

  1756. brother

  1757. or

  1758. sister

  1759. formerly

  1760. struggled

  1761. with

  1762. alcoholism

  1763. and

  1764. they

  1765. are

  1766. finally

  1767. sober

  1768. after

  1769. years

  1770. of

  1771. hard

  1772. fought

  1773. battle

  1774. and

  1775. you're

  1776. drinking

  1777. in front

  1778. of

  1779. him

  1780. and

  1781. inviting

  1782. him

  1783. out

  1784. to

  1785. a

  1786. bar

  1787. in

  1788. doing

  1789. so

  1790. you

  1791. might

  1792. cause

  1793. him

  1794. to

  1795. stumble.

  1796. Maybe

  1797. you're

  1798. convinced

  1799. that

  1800. behaving

  1801. in a

  1802. certain

  1803. way

  1804. with

  1805. members

  1806. of

  1807. the

  1808. opposite

  1809. sex

  1810. or

  1811. the

  1812. way

  1813. you

  1814. spend

  1815. alone

  1816. time

  1817. with

  1818. or

  1819. show

  1820. physical

  1821. affection

  1822. to

  1823. your

  1824. boyfriend

  1825. or

  1826. girlfriend

  1827. is

  1828. perfectly

  1829. proper

  1830. and

  1831. fine.

  1832. But

  1833. a

  1834. Christian

  1835. friend

  1836. of

  1837. yours

  1838. disagrees

  1839. and

  1840. your

  1841. behavior

  1842. in

  1843. front

  1844. of

  1845. them

  1846. might

  1847. set

  1848. a

  1849. bad

  1850. example

  1851. for

  1852. him

  1853. or

  1854. her

  1855. cause

  1856. her

  1857. to

  1858. stumble

  1859. into

  1860. sin

  1861. with

  1862. her

  1863. boyfriend.

  1864. Maybe

  1865. your

  1866. practice

  1867. of

  1868. yoga

  1869. is

  1870. causing

  1871. Hindu

  1872. converts

  1873. to

  1874. Christianity

  1875. to

  1876. stumble

  1877. because

  1878. they

  1879. associate

  1880. it

  1881. with

  1882. their

  1883. former

  1884. practices

  1885. within

  1886. Hinduism.

  1887. Don't

  1888. destroy

  1889. your

  1890. Christian

  1891. sister

  1892. for

  1893. the

  1894. sake

  1895. of

  1896. your

  1897. freedom.

  1898. Why?

  1899. Because

  1900. their

  1901. eternal

  1902. souls

  1903. matter

  1904. more

  1905. than

  1906. your

  1907. temporal

  1908. preferences

  1909. and

  1910. desires.

  1911. Undoubtedly

  1912. we need

  1913. to apply

  1914. this

  1915. carefully

  1916. and

  1917. wisely

  1918. and I

  1919. don't

  1920. want

  1921. you

  1922. to

  1923. ever

  1924. compromise

  1925. gospel

  1926. principles

  1927. or

  1928. biblical

  1929. commands

  1930. but if

  1931. it's a

  1932. matter

  1933. of

  1934. giving

  1935. up

  1936. your

  1937. preferences

  1938. and

  1939. desires

  1940. why

  1941. not

  1942. gladly

  1943. give

  1944. up

  1945. your

  1946. preferences

  1947. and

  1948. desires

  1949. for

  1950. the

  1951. eternal

  1952. good

  1953. of

  1954. your

  1955. neighbors

  1956. Jesus

  1957. drives

  1958. this

  1959. point

  1960. home

  1961. even

  1962. more

  1963. pointedly

  1964. in

  1965. chapter

  1966. 18

  1967. verses

  1968. 1

  1969. to

  1970. 6

  1971. he

  1972. says

  1973. in

  1974. verse

  1975. 1

  1976. at

  1977. that

  1978. time

  1979. the

  1980. disciples

  1981. came

  1982. to

  1983. Jesus

  1984. saying

  1985. who

  1986. is

  1987. the

  1988. greatest

  1989. in

  1990. the

  1991. kingdom

  1992. of

  1993. heaven

  1994. I

  1995. keep

  1996. saying

  1997. to

  1998. you

  1999. guys

  2000. that

  2001. the

  2002. unpopular

  2003. !

  2004. topic

  2005. that

  2006. Jesus

  2007. likes

  2008. to

  2009. return

  2010. over

  2011. and

  2012. over

  2013. again

  2014. too

  2015. is

  2016. that

  2017. he

  2018. is

  2019. going

  2020. to

  2021. die

  2022. right

  2023. he

  2024. is

  2025. going

  2026. to

  2027. suffer

  2028. and

  2029. be

  2030. killed

  2031. and

  2032. on

  2033. the

  2034. third

  2035. day

  2036. be

  2037. raised

  2038. again

  2039. now

  2040. the

  2041. most

  2042. popular

  2043. topic

  2044. among

  2045. Jesus

  2046. disciples

  2047. is

  2048. the

  2049. never

  2050. ending

  2051. goat

  2052. debate

  2053. who

  2054. is

  2055. the

  2056. greatest

  2057. in

  2058. the

  2059. kingdom

  2060. of

  2061. heaven

  2062. Jesus

  2063. mentioned

  2064. of

  2065. who

  2066. the

  2067. sons

  2068. of

  2069. the

  2070. kingdom

  2071. are

  2072. in

  2073. the

  2074. previous

  2075. passage

  2076. appears

  2077. to

  2078. have

  2079. sparked

  2080. this

  2081. lively

  2082. debate

  2083. or

  2084. questions

  2085. wow

  2086. we're

  2087. really

  2088. something

  2089. aren't

  2090. we

  2091. not

  2092. only

  2093. that

  2094. Jesus

  2095. had

  2096. taken

  2097. Peter

  2098. James

  2099. and

  2100. John

  2101. on

  2102. their

  2103. exclusive

  2104. field

  2105. trip

  2106. to

  2107. Mount

  2108. of

  2109. Transfiguration

  2110. and

  2111. they

  2112. just

  2113. came

  2114. down

  2115. from

  2116. there

  2117. and

  2118. a couple

  2119. chapters

  2120. earlier

  2121. Jesus

  2122. had

  2123. declared

  2124. to

  2125. Peter

  2126. blessed

  2127. are

  2128. you

  2129. Simon

  2130. bar

  2131. Jonah

  2132. for

  2133. flesh

  2134. and

  2135. blood

  2136. has

  2137. not

  2138. revealed

  2139. this

  2140. to

  2141. you

  2142. but

  2143. my

  2144. father

  2145. who

  2146. is

  2147. in

  2148. heaven

  2149. and

  2150. I

  2151. tell

  2152. you

  2153. you

  2154. are

  2155. Peter

  2156. and

  2157. on

  2158. this

  2159. rock

  2160. I

  2161. will

  2162. build

  2163. my

  2164. church

  2165. and

  2166. the

  2167. gates

  2168. of

  2169. Haiti

  2170. shall

  2171. not

  2172. prevail

  2173. against

  2174. it

  2175. all

  2176. of

  2177. these

  2178. events

  2179. probably

  2180. created

  2181. murmurings

  2182. whisperings

  2183. and

  2184. debates

  2185. who's

  2186. the

  2187. top

  2188. dog

  2189. who's

  2190. the

  2191. greatest

  2192. in the

  2193. kingdom

  2194. of

  2195. heaven

  2196. what

  2197. does

  2198. it

  2199. mean

  2200. to

  2201. be

  2202. the

  2203. greatest

  2204. the

  2205. concept

  2206. of

  2207. greatness

  2208. is

  2209. inherently

  2210. competitive

  2211. and

  2212. comparative

  2213. isn't

  2214. it

  2215. who

  2216. are

  2217. the

  2218. people

  2219. that

  2220. we

  2221. call

  2222. great

  2223. in

  2224. our

  2225. society

  2226. !

  2227. to

  2228. be

  2229. perceived

  2230. to

  2231. be

  2232. superior

  2233. to

  2234. others

  2235. in

  2236. some

  2237. kind

  2238. of

  2239. significant

  2240. way

  2241. in

  2242. order

  2243. to

  2244. be

  2245. called

  2246. great

  2247. in

  2248. society

  2249. there

  2250. is

  2251. no

  2252. objective

  2253. level

  2254. of

  2255. achievement

  2256. that

  2257. qualifies

  2258. you

  2259. as

  2260. being

  2261. great

  2262. otherwise

  2263. if there

  2264. is

  2265. who

  2266. defines

  2267. that

  2268. you're

  2269. only

  2270. considered

  2271. great

  2272. if you

  2273. achieve

  2274. something

  2275. that

  2276. others

  2277. have

  2278. not

  2279. achieved

  2280. and

  2281. as

  2282. soon

  2283. as

  2284. everybody

  2285. else

  2286. around

  2287. you

  2288. reaches

  2289. the

  2290. same

  2291. level

  2292. of

  2293. success

  2294. and

  2295. wealth

  2296. and fame

  2297. and beauty

  2298. and power

  2299. you

  2300. cease

  2301. to

  2302. be

  2303. great

  2304. you're

  2305. now

  2306. normal

  2307. you're

  2308. only

  2309. great

  2310. if you're

  2311. better

  2312. than

  2313. someone

  2314. else

  2315. this

  2316. pursuit

  2317. of

  2318. so

  2319. called

  2320. greatness

  2321. then

  2322. is

  2323. really

  2324. an

  2325. unbridled

  2326. expression

  2327. of

  2328. human

  2329. pride

  2330. because

  2331. it

  2332. brings

  2333. so

  2334. much

  2335. focus

  2336. on

  2337. the

  2338. self

  2339. and

  2340. the

  2341. public

  2342. perception

  2343. of

  2344. the

  2345. self

  2346. it

  2347. produces

  2348. because

  2349. of

  2350. that

  2351. reason

  2352. deep

  2353. insecurity

  2354. and

  2355. anxiety

  2356. and

  2357. because

  2358. it

  2359. thrives

  2360. on

  2361. comparison

  2362. and

  2363. self

  2364. promotion

  2365. it

  2366. erodes

  2367. community

  2368. it

  2369. destroys

  2370. community

  2371. how

  2372. often

  2373. have

  2374. we

  2375. seen

  2376. this

  2377. even

  2378. in

  2379. churches

  2380. !

  2381. I'm an

  2382. elder

  2383. I'm

  2384. a

  2385. deacon

  2386. I'm

  2387. a

  2388. community

  2389. group

  2390. leader

  2391. I'm

  2392. a

  2393. ministry

  2394. leader

  2395. I've

  2396. been

  2397. in

  2398. church

  2399. longer

  2400. than

  2401. you

  2402. I've

  2403. read

  2404. the

  2405. Bible

  2406. more

  2407. times

  2408. than

  2409. you

  2410. I'm

  2411. closer

  2412. to

  2413. the

  2414. pastor's

  2415. family

  2416. than

  2417. you

  2418. I

  2419. have

  2420. more

  2421. friends

  2422. than

  2423. you

  2424. I'm

  2425. more

  2426. spiritually

  2427. disciplined

  2428. !

  2429. than

  2430. Jesus

  2431. turns

  2432. this

  2433. natural

  2434. sinful

  2435. !

  2436. human

  2437. preoccupation

  2438. with

  2439. greatness

  2440. completely

  2441. on

  2442. his

  2443. head

  2444. in

  2445. verse

  2446. 2

  2447. Jesus

  2448. calls

  2449. to

  2450. him

  2451. a

  2452. child

  2453. and

  2454. puts

  2455. him

  2456. in

  2457. the

  2458. midst

  2459. of

  2460. the

  2461. disciples

  2462. as

  2463. an

  2464. object

  2465. lesson

  2466. you

  2467. guys

  2468. have

  2469. it

  2470. right

  2471. here

  2472. right

  2473. in

  2474. front

  2475. of

  2476. you

  2477. in

  2478. the

  2479. front

  2480. row

  2481. as

  2482. illustration

  2483. and

  2484. then

  2485. he

  2486. says

  2487. truly

  2488. I

  2489. say

  2490. to

  2491. you

  2492. unless

  2493. you

  2494. turn

  2495. and

  2496. become

  2497. like

  2498. children

  2499. you

  2500. will

  2501. never

  2502. enter

  2503. the

  2504. kingdom

  2505. of

  2506. heaven

  2507. what

  2508. does

  2509. it

  2510. mean

  2511. to

  2512. become

  2513. like

  2514. children

  2515. it

  2516. doesn't

  2517. mean

  2518. to

  2519. become

  2520. innocent

  2521. like

  2522. children

  2523. children

  2524. are

  2525. not

  2526. innocent

  2527. only

  2528. if

  2529. you

  2530. knew

  2531. that

  2532. children

  2533. are

  2534. ignorant

  2535. of

  2536. some

  2537. of

  2538. the

  2539. cynical

  2540. ways

  2541. of

  2542. adults

  2543. for

  2544. sure

  2545. they're

  2546. not

  2547. exposed

  2548. to

  2549. as

  2550. many

  2551. things

  2552. but

  2553. they

  2554. are

  2555. far

  2556. from

  2557. innocent

  2558. they

  2559. sin

  2560. like

  2561. the

  2562. rest

  2563. of

  2564. us

  2565. wait

  2566. till

  2567. you

  2568. have

  2569. kids

  2570. if

  2571. you

  2572. don't

  2573. have

  2574. kids

  2575. in

  2576. sin

  2577. did

  2578. my

  2579. mother

  2580. conceive

  2581. me

  2582. that's

  2583. not

  2584. what

  2585. Jesus

  2586. is

  2587. talking

  2588. about

  2589. he

  2590. tells

  2591. us

  2592. exactly

  2593. what

  2594. he's

  2595. talking

  2596. about

  2597. in

  2598. verse

  2599. four

  2600. whoever

  2601. humbles

  2602. himself

  2603. like

  2604. this

  2605. child

  2606. is

  2607. the

  2608. greatest

  2609. in

  2610. the

  2611. kingdom

  2612. of

  2613. heaven

  2614. what

  2615. Jesus

  2616. is

  2617. after

  2618. is

  2619. humility

  2620. in

  2621. what

  2622. ways

  2623. are

  2624. children

  2625. humble

  2626. children

  2627. have

  2628. no

  2629. status

  2630. in

  2631. society

  2632. especially

  2633. in

  2634. Bible

  2635. times

  2636. later

  2637. in

  2638. chapter

  2639. 19

  2640. verse

  2641. 13

  2642. to

  2643. 15

  2644. when

  2645. eager

  2646. parents

  2647. I

  2648. think

  2649. we

  2650. have

  2651. I

  2652. did

  2653. one

  2654. of

  2655. those

  2656. parents

  2657. I

  2658. think

  2659. if

  2660. I

  2661. saw

  2662. Jesus

  2663. walking

  2664. by

  2665. eager

  2666. parents

  2667. bring

  2668. their

  2669. children

  2670. to

  2671. Jesus

  2672. maybe

  2673. you

  2674. could

  2675. spend

  2676. a little

  2677. bit of

  2678. time

  2679. with

  2680. them

  2681. talk

  2682. to

  2683. them

  2684. lay

  2685. your

  2686. hands

  2687. on

  2688. them

  2689. pray

  2690. for

  2691. them

  2692. give

  2693. them

  2694. some

  2695. amazing

  2696. blessings

  2697. !

  2698. That would

  2699. be

  2700. great!

  2701. And

  2702. then

  2703. the

  2704. disciples

  2705. who

  2706. see

  2707. that

  2708. they

  2709. rebuke

  2710. these

  2711. parents

  2712. and

  2713. they

  2714. try

  2715. to

  2716. shoo

  2717. the

  2718. children

  2719. away

  2720. why?

  2721. Because

  2722. children

  2723. in their

  2724. view

  2725. are not

  2726. important

  2727. Jesus

  2728. is far

  2729. too

  2730. important

  2731. and far

  2732. too

  2733. busy

  2734. to have

  2735. children

  2736. taking

  2737. up

  2738. his

  2739. time

  2740. how

  2741. inconsiderate

  2742. of you

  2743. take

  2744. them

  2745. away

  2746. children

  2747. are the

  2748. nobodies

  2749. of society

  2750. they

  2751. don't

  2752. have a

  2753. seat

  2754. at the

  2755. table

  2756. have

  2757. you guys

  2758. heard that

  2759. before?

  2760. And

  2761. that

  2762. kind

  2763. of

  2764. expectation

  2765. is

  2766. pretty

  2767. universal

  2768. across

  2769. cultures

  2770. but

  2771. Jesus

  2772. turns

  2773. that

  2774. upside

  2775. down

  2776. he

  2777. welcomes

  2778. children

  2779. into his

  2780. presence

  2781. then he

  2782. says

  2783. unless

  2784. you

  2785. adults

  2786. turn

  2787. and become

  2788. like

  2789. children

  2790. you will

  2791. never

  2792. enter

  2793. the

  2794. kingdom

  2795. of

  2796. heaven

  2797. I

  2798. pointed

  2799. this

  2800. out to

  2801. you

  2802. last

  2803. week

  2804. that

  2805. more

  2806. than

  2807. any

  2808. other

  2809. New

  2810. Testament

  2811. writer

  2812. and

  2813. more

  2814. than

  2815. four

  2816. times

  2817. more

  2818. than

  2819. any

  2820. other

  2821. synoptic

  2822. gospel

  2823. writers

  2824. Matthew

  2825. speaks of

  2826. Christians

  2827. as little

  2828. ones

  2829. he does

  2830. it in our

  2831. passage here

  2832. too

  2833. that's his

  2834. favorite way

  2835. of referring

  2836. to the

  2837. followers of

  2838. Jesus

  2839. whoever gives

  2840. one of these

  2841. little ones

  2842. his disciples

  2843. his followers

  2844. even a cup

  2845. of cold

  2846. water because

  2847. he's a disciple

  2848. truly I say

  2849. to you he will

  2850. by no means

  2851. lose his

  2852. reward

  2853. and then

  2854. what he says

  2855. later in

  2856. this passage

  2857. verse 6

  2858. whoever causes

  2859. one of these

  2860. little ones

  2861. who believe

  2862. in me

  2863. to sin

  2864. it will

  2865. be better

  2866. for him

  2867. to have

  2868. a great

  2869. millstone

  2870. fastened

  2871. around his

  2872. neck

  2873. and to be

  2874. drowned

  2875. in the

  2876. depths

  2877. of the

  2878. sea

  2879. these

  2880. little

  2881. ones

  2882. these

  2883. small

  2884. people

  2885. he's

  2886. referring

  2887. to

  2888. Christians

  2889. his

  2890. followers

  2891. and using

  2892. the object

  2893. lesson

  2894. of

  2895. literal

  2896. children

  2897. to teach

  2898. them

  2899. this is

  2900. what you

  2901. must be

  2902. like

  2903. before

  2904. God

  2905. becoming

  2906. a Christian

  2907. in fact

  2908. I would

  2909. say

  2910. requires

  2911. turning

  2912. and becoming

  2913. like

  2914. children

  2915. that's

  2916. literally

  2917. what

  2918. Jesus

  2919. says

  2920. how so

  2921. to become

  2922. a Christian

  2923. is to

  2924. become

  2925. a child

  2926. of God

  2927. to

  2928. declare

  2929. our

  2930. dependence

  2931. on

  2932. God

  2933. to

  2934. become

  2935. his

  2936. dependent

  2937. to

  2938. become

  2939. a

  2940. Christian

  2941. is to

  2942. depend

  2943. on the

  2944. provision

  2945. of

  2946. God

  2947. rather

  2948. than

  2949. providing

  2950. for

  2951. yourself

  2952. and

  2953. trusting

  2954. in

  2955. yourself

  2956. and

  2957. being

  2958. self

  2959. sufficient

  2960. to

  2961. become

  2962. a

  2963. Christian

  2964. is to

  2965. receive

  2966. the

  2967. sacrificial

  2968. death

  2969. of

  2970. Jesus

  2971. Christ

  2972. on the

  2973. cross

  2974. on our

  2975. behalf

  2976. for our

  2977. sins

  2978. through

  2979. faith

  2980. to

  2981. believe

  2982. that we

  2983. are saved

  2984. not by

  2985. our own

  2986. righteousness

  2987. but by

  2988. the

  2989. toning

  2990. sacrifice

  2991. of Christ

  2992. and his

  2993. righteousness

  2994. imputed

  2995. to us

  2996. counted

  2997. on our

  2998. behalf

  2999. to

  3000. become

  3001. a

  3002. Christian

  3003. means to

  3004. come to

  3005. God

  3006. as

  3007. empty

  3008. handed

  3009. helpless

  3010. sinners

  3011. like we

  3012. were

  3013. talking

  3014. about

  3015. last

  3016. week

  3017. God

  3018. apart

  3019. from

  3020. you

  3021. I

  3022. have

  3023. no

  3024. good

  3025. thing

  3026. I

  3027. am

  3028. a

  3029. ruined

  3030. sinner

  3031. with

  3032. no

  3033. hope

  3034. of

  3035. saving

  3036. myself

  3037. I

  3038. have

  3039. no

  3040. merit

  3041. to

  3042. commend

  3043. myself

  3044. to

  3045. you

  3046. so I

  3047. come

  3048. to

  3049. you

  3050. empty

  3051. handed

  3052. to

  3053. receive

  3054. freely

  3055. from

  3056. your

  3057. bounty

  3058. and

  3059. grace

  3060. only

  3061. those

  3062. who

  3063. humble

  3064. themselves

  3065. in

  3066. that

  3067. way

  3068. before

  3069. God

  3070. are

  3071. called

  3072. children

  3073. of

  3074. God

  3075. and

  3076. when

  3077. you

  3078. see

  3079. yourself

  3080. as

  3081. children

  3082. when

  3083. you

  3084. see

  3085. yourself

  3086. in

  3087. that

  3088. lowly

  3089. humble

  3090. station

  3091. in

  3092. your

  3093. relationship

  3094. to

  3095. God

  3096. you

  3097. stop

  3098. trying

  3099. to

  3100. measure

  3101. yourself

  3102. against

  3103. other

  3104. people

  3105. you

  3106. don't

  3107. mind

  3108. being

  3109. overlooked

  3110. or

  3111. being

  3112. occupied

  3113. with

  3114. lowly

  3115. tasks

  3116. it

  3117. transforms

  3118. community

  3119. out

  3120. there

  3121. in the

  3122. world

  3123. you

  3124. need

  3125. to

  3126. have

  3127. degrees

  3128. out

  3129. there

  3130. in

  3131. the

  3132. world

  3133. you

  3134. need

  3135. to

  3136. stand

  3137. upright

  3138. and

  3139. keep

  3140. your

  3141. head

  3142. keep

  3143. your

  3144. chin

  3145. up

  3146. out

  3147. there

  3148. in

  3149. the

  3150. world

  3151. you

  3152. to

  3153. be

  3154. articulate

  3155. out

  3156. smart

  3157. out

  3158. there

  3159. in

  3160. the

  3161. world

  3162. need

  3163. to

  3164. have

  3165. power

  3166. out

  3167. there

  3168. in

  3169. the

  3170. world

  3171. need

  3172. be

  3173. tall

  3174. and

  3175. good

  3176. looking

  3177. out

  3178. there

  3179. in

  3180. the

  3181. world

  3182. you

  3183. need

  3184. to

  3185. have

  3186. all

  3187. these

  3188. things

  3189. to

  3190. be

  3191. recognized

  3192. by

  3193. somebody

3194. as sons and daughters of God.

3195. So let's not import that stuff

  3196. into the church.

3197. Christian pastor and author C.J. Mahaney

3198. says this in his book,

  3199. Humility, True Greatness.

3200. As sinfully and culturally defined,

3201. pursuing greatness looks like this.

  3202. Individuals motivated by self-interest,

  3203. self-indulgence,

  3204. and a false sense of self-sufficiency

3205. to pursue a selfish ambition

3206. for the purpose of self-glorification.

3207. Contrast that with the pursuit of true greatness

  3208. as biblically defined,

3209. serving others for the glory of God.

3210. This is a genuine expression of humility,

3211. and this is true greatness

3212. as the Savior defined it.

  3213. But wait a minute.

3214. I can hear the objection in my head.

3215. Have you ever tried this?

3216. If I live like that,

3217. people are going to step all over me.

3218. Sean, have you ever tried this?

3219. If you live like that,

3220. you're going to be overlooked.

3221. You're going to be mistreated.

3222. You're going to be hurt.

3223. You're going to be taken advantage of.

3224. And here's Jesus' answer to that

  3225. in verses 5 to 6.

3226. Whoever receives one such child in my name

  3227. receives me,

3228. but whoever causes one of these little ones

3229. who believe in me to sin,

3230. it would be better for him

3231. to have a great millstone

  3232. fastened around his neck

3233. and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

3234. It's very similar to what Jesus said

  3235. earlier in chapter 10, verse 40.

3236. Whoever receives you receives me,

  3237. and whoever receives me

3238. receives him who sent me.

  3239. Jesus is saying,

3240. the way you treat my children,

  3241. you treat,

3242. well, God the Father is saying,

3243. the way you treat my children,

  3244. you're treating me.

  3245. Jesus is saying,

3246. the way you treat the members of my body,

3247. that's the way you treat me.

3248. And so this is why

3249. in the context of the church,

  3250. the community of God,

  3251. this can work.

  3252. Because here,

3253. you don't need to pretend,

3254. you don't need to live in pretense

  3255. and put up faces,

3256. and like you have everything put together.

3257. Why don't you have to do that?

3258. Because all you need to be recognized

3259. is to be a child of God

3260. if that's enough to respect someone

3261. in the church of Christ.

3262. When you come to church,

3263. you are not surrounded by nobody.

  3264. You're surrounded by royalties,

  3265. crown princes,

  3266. and crown princesses

3267. of the kingdom of heaven.

3268. Doesn't matter what they look like.

  3269. Doesn't matter how little

  3270. they have accomplished

  3271. out in the world.

3272. So we treat each other

  3273. as if we're dealing

  3274. with Christ himself

3275. because we are members of his body.

  3276. We treat each other

  3277. as if we're dealing

3278. with the children of God,

  3279. the Father himself,

3280. because we are his children.

3281. God is in essence saying,

  3282. I know,

3283. I know what I'm asking you to do.

  3284. I know sometimes

  3285. you'll get hurt.

  3286. I know sometimes

  3287. sinful people

3288. will step all over you.

  3289. I know sometimes

3290. you're going to humble yourself

  3291. before others,

3292. and you're going to confess

  3293. your sins to them,

3294. and then they're not going to,

  3295. instead of giving you

  3296. grace and mercy,

3297. they're going to stomp you.

  3298. Say,

  3299. yeah,

  3300. you are that bad.

  3301. But this is what

3302. God the Father is saying.

  3303. Don't you worry

  3304. about how other people

  3305. will treat you.

3306. I'll take care of that.

  3307. I remember

3308. when I was in grade school,

  3309. there was a girl

  3310. that was bullied

  3311. every single day.

  3312. And

  3313. one time,

  3314. her mom

  3315. stormed into the classroom.

  3316. It's like a sliding door.

  3317. Slam,

  3318. slam,

3319. just stormed into the classroom,

3320. started naming all the boys

  3321. that were bullying her.

  3322. who is this guy?

3323. Who do you think you are?

  3324. And started calling them

  3325. and yelling at them.

  3326. And then the teacher

  3327. is just panicking,

3328. doesn't know what to do.

  3329. You know,

  3330. like,

  3331. and

  3332. I mean,

  3333. she didn't,

3334. she didn't try to hurt

  3335. the boys or anything.

  3336. She's just trying

  3337. to make a statement.

  3338. After she left,

  3339. those boys never behaved

  3340. like that ever again.

  3341. God the Father

  3342. is saying,

3343. I'll take care of you.

  3344. In this life

  3345. or the next,

  3346. there will be justice.

  3347. I'm watching over you.

  3348. Think about

  3349. having a millstone

  3350. tied around your neck

  3351. and being drowned

  3352. in the sea.

  3353. The millstone here

3354. is not the small ones

3355. that people do by hand.

  3356. It's literally

  3357. the donkey millstone.

  3358. The huge ones,

  3359. the heavy circular,

  3360. three,

  3361. six feet in diameter,

  3362. weighing around

  3363. 1,000 pounds

  3364. that only animals

  3365. like horses

  3366. and donkeys

  3367. can pull

  3368. or oxen

  3369. can pull.

  3370. Jesus says,

  3371. it's better

  3372. for that person

  3373. who hurts

3374. one of his little ones

  3375. to have that

  3376. tied around his neck

  3377. and drowned

3378. in the depths of the sea.

  3379. That person

3380. is never getting back up.

  3381. So this radically changes

  3382. the way we interact

  3383. with each other

3384. in the Church of Christ.

  3385. This doesn't mean,

  3386. of course,

  3387. that Jesus eschewed

  3388. all forms of hierarchies

  3389. and leadership structures.

  3390. That'd be a wrong

  3391. application of this text.

  3392. Jesus does not endorse

  3393. a radically flat,

  3394. egalitarian vision

  3395. for the Church

  3396. that some Christian movements

  3397. throughout history

  3398. have espoused.

  3399. The original Quakers

  3400. were of this ilk.

  3401. They supremely valued

  3402. immediate experiential

  3403. revelation of Christ

  3404. to the individual,

  3405. aka prophecy.

  3406. So they correctly believed

  3407. that every single Christian

3408. has a Spirit of God,

  3409. but they wrongly applied

  3410. that truth

  3411. into disregarding

  3412. the Bible's teaching

  3413. about elders and deacons,

  3414. and they flattened out

3415. the structure of the Church.

  3416. They accorded everybody

  3417. attending their meetings,

  3418. their gatherings,

  3419. equal status,

  3420. and everybody would sit

  3421. in a circle.

3422. There would be no pulpits

  3423. and no altars,

  3424. no set liturgies

  3425. in the worship.

  3426. Anyone,

  3427. regardless of their

  3428. membership status,

  3429. gender,

  3430. or age,

  3431. was permitted to speak

3432. as long as they claimed

  3433. to have felt

  3434. the leading

  3435. of the Holy Spirit.

3436. In the absence of elders

  3437. whose responsibility

3438. it is to give instruction

  3439. in sound doctrine

  3440. and also to rebuke

  3441. those who contradict it,

3442. as it says in Titus 1.9,

  3443. it should not come

  3444. as a surprise

  3445. that the Quakers

  3446. soon slid into heresy.

  3447. Followers of Elias Hick

  3448. emphasized what they called

  3449. the inward light

  3450. over biblical authority

  3451. and became the modern

  3452. liberal Quakerism,

  3453. most of whom became

  3454. universalists,

  3455. Buddhists,

  3456. or even atheists

  3457. by the 20th century.

  3458. The only Quakers

  3459. who remain biblically

  3460. and theologically sound

  3461. and faithful today

  3462. are those called

  3463. the Orthodox Quakers

  3464. who reinstated

  3465. biblical leadership structures

  3466. and appointed elders

  3467. in the early 1800s.

  3468. So the point

  3469. of that cautionary tale

  3470. is this,

  3471. the radical,

  3472. selfless,

  3473. childlike humility

  3474. that Jesus enjoins

  3475. for all Christians

  3476. does not undermine

  3477. biblical leadership structures.

  3478. However,

  3479. it does transform

  3480. those very leadership structures

  3481. so they don't work

  3482. like it does

  3483. out in the world.

  3484. Now,

  3485. finally,

  3486. to personal stumbling blocks,

  3487. I'll be brief here

  3488. since I've covered

  3489. Matthew 5, 29-30 already,

  3490. which is very similar.

  3491. Woe to the world

  3492. for temptations to sin

  3493. for it is necessary

  3494. that temptations come,

3495. but woe to the one

3496. by whom the temptation comes.

  3497. And if your hand

  3498. or your foot

  3499. causes you to sin,

  3500. cut it off

  3501. and throw it away.

3502. It is better for you

  3503. to enter life crippled

  3504. or lame

  3505. than with two hands

  3506. or two feet

  3507. to be thrown

  3508. into the eternal fire.

  3509. And if your eye

  3510. causes you to sin,

  3511. tear it out

  3512. and throw it away.

3513. It is better for you

  3514. to enter life

  3515. with one eye

  3516. than with two eyes

  3517. to be thrown

3518. into the hell of fire.

  3519. Jesus,

  3520. I've said this before,

3521. he's not being literal here,

  3522. but he is being

  3523. utterly serious.

  3524. He's not saying

  3525. literally,

  3526. gouge out your eye,

  3527. right?

  3528. I mean,

  3529. you could gouge your,

  3530. you could have,

  3531. you could be blind

  3532. and still be

3533. a very, very lustful person,

  3534. right?

  3535. And you could be,

  3536. I mean,

  3537. you could be missing

  3538. your legs

  3539. and you could still

  3540. take yourself

  3541. on your wheelchairs

  3542. to sinful areas

3543. to wherever you want to go.

  3544. Like,

  3545. it's not those things

  3546. themselves

3547. that cause people to sin,

  3548. but he's,

  3549. Jesus is using them

  3550. as metaphors,

  3551. as an analogy

3552. to say that we should

3553. get rid of the things

  3554. that cause us

  3555. to stumble.

  3556. So what is it

  3557. in your life

  3558. that causes you

  3559. to stumble?

  3560. Are you making

  3561. decisive choices

3562. to get rid of these things?

  3563. I've been watching

  3564. in shock

  3565. as the list

  3566. of rich,

  3567. famous,

  3568. and powerful people

  3569. who are implicated

  3570. in the Jeffrey Epstein

  3571. scandal

  3572. continues to grow,

  3573. leading to embarrassing

  3574. mea culpas

  3575. and resignations

  3576. from powerful people.

  3577. This man

  3578. was a financier

  3579. who used his wealth

  3580. and connections

  3581. for sex trafficking

  3582. of children,

  3583. and it seems

  3584. that his sordid influence

  3585. was far-reaching,

  3586. reaching even

  3587. to a crown princess,

  3588. a prince,

  3589. a duchess,

  3590. CEOs,

  3591. multiple presidents

  3592. and prime ministers,

  3593. diplomats,

  3594. film directors,

  3595. university presidents

  3596. and professors,

  3597. a Nobel laureate,

  3598. and a chairman

3599. of a top law firm.

  3600. The full story

  3601. remains to be seen,

  3602. but it seems

  3603. that many powerful people

  3604. were in his orbit,

  3605. one,

  3606. because they liked

  3607. the financial services

  3608. that he offered,

  3609. which saved them

  3610. tens of millions

  3611. of dollars

  3612. in tax loopholes,

3613. and or because they liked

  3614. the moral sexual services

  3615. that he procured

  3616. on their behalf,

3617. and or because they liked

  3618. access to his money

  3619. and connections

  3620. and social clout,

3621. and or because they had

  3622. secrets now

  3623. that Jeffrey Epstein knew

  3624. and that he needed

3625. to keep his mouth shut.

  3626. In this sinful world,

  3627. it is necessary

  3628. that temptations come,

  3629. Jesus says,

  3630. and you will confront

  3631. many stumbling blocks

  3632. that the world

  3633. throws at you

  3634. in your social life

3635. and in your career paths.

  3636. Maybe your refusal

  3637. to get drunk

  3638. and be sexually promiscuous,

  3639. your refusal to cuss

  3640. or to agree

  3641. with unbiblical ideas

  3642. at your school

  3643. or in college

  3644. or at your work

  3645. will make you unpopular

  3646. and isolated.

  3647. Maybe your refusal

  3648. to engage

  3649. in unlawful,

  3650. shady business dealings

  3651. or your prioritization

  3652. of your family

  3653. and your church

  3654. in an extremely demanding

  3655. line of work

  3656. will put you

  3657. on the hot seat

  3658. with your boss

  3659. and it will hamstring

  3660. your upward mobility.

  3661. Maybe your refusal

  3662. to be chummy

  3663. and flirty

  3664. with the sleazy

  3665. but powerful old man

  3666. means forfeiting

  3667. a golden opportunity.

  3668. Maybe fleeing temptations

  3669. means being cut off

  3670. from the corridors

  3671. of worldly power.

3672. Maybe it will make you

  3673. cripple or lame

3674. in the eyes of the world.

  3675. Jesus says,

  3676. embrace being crippled

  3677. or lame.

  3678. It is better

  3679. to enter eternal life

  3680. as a cripple

  3681. than to be thrown

  3682. into the eternal fire

  3683. whole and able-bodied.

  3684. It's better

  3685. to enter eternal life

  3686. as a failure

3687. in the eyes of the world

  3688. than to be thrown

  3689. into eternal hellfire

  3690. as a success story.

  3691. So often,

  3692. isn't this true?

  3693. That the very

  3694. stepping stones

  3695. that make you

  3696. get ahead in life

  3697. are the stumbling blocks

  3698. on the pathway

3699. to the kingdom of heaven.

  3700. Do you know that,

  3701. brothers and sisters?

  3702. It's better

  3703. to enter life

  3704. poor

  3705. than to be thrown

  3706. into the hellfire

  3707. rich.

  3708. Better to enter heaven

  3709. as a nobody

  3710. than to be thrown

  3711. into hellfire

  3712. as a somebody

  3713. on the who's who

  3714. magazines.

  3715. It's better.

  3716. Jesus is not saying,

  3717. well,

  3718. this is really hard

  3719. to do

  3720. and it's a tough

  3721. pill to swallow,

  3722. but it's the right

  3723. thing to do,

  3724. so just do it.

3725. That's not what he says.

  3726. He says,

  3727. this is better.

  3728. So set your side

  3729. on something

  3730. that is better.

  3731. In 2018,

  3732. a man named

  3733. Wayne Moorhead

  3734. developed sepsis

  3735. following an infection

  3736. and as his body

  3737. diverted blood

  3738. to his vital organs,

  3739. his extremities,

  3740. his limbs

  3741. became vulnerable

  3742. and suffered tissue death,

  3743. gangrene,

  3744. which began to spread

3745. to his arms and legs.

  3746. Eventually,

3747. in order to save his life,

  3748. he had to get

  3749. both his legs

  3750. and both his arms

  3751. amputated.

  3752. But this

  3753. was not

  3754. a sacrifice.

  3755. That was the only

  3756. sensible

  3757. and reasonable

  3758. thing to do

  3759. in that situation.

  3760. That was the better

  3761. thing to do

  3762. in that situation.

  3763. Yes,

  3764. he is crippled

  3765. and lame now.

  3766. Yes,

  3767. but he is

  3768. alive.

  3769. alive.

  3770. What if

  3771. when your eternal

  3772. life is at stake?

  3773. Are you willing

  3774. to sacrifice less?

  3775. Don't ever think

  3776. that, you know,

  3777. sin is a

  3778. harmless thing.

  3779. Oh,

  3780. that one time

3781. will not do much harm.

  3782. Remember,

  3783. it's the one sin

  3784. of Adam

  3785. that led

  3786. to the fall

  3787. of humanity

  3788. and the groaning

  3789. of all creation.

  3790. sin.

  3791. That's how

  3792. seriously God

  3793. takes one sin.

  3794. Moreover,

  3795. sin never stays

  3796. confined to where

3797. you want it to be.

  3798. It always grows.

  3799. It's like cancer.

  3800. All it takes is

  3801. one cancerous cell

  3802. and then it starts

  3803. to hijack your system.

3804. Sin does the same thing.

  3805. It hijacks your

  3806. thinking,

  3807. your reasoning,

  3808. your moral reasoning,

  3809. your spiritual discernment.

  3810. It impairs your thinking.

  3811. It dulls your

  3812. spiritual appetite.

  3813. It grows and grows

3814. and grows and not only

  3815. within your own life,

  3816. it spreads to other

  3817. people in your life

  3818. that you affect.

  3819. So if

  3820. that's what's at stake,

  3821. if eternal life

  3822. is at stake,

  3823. is it a sacrifice

  3824. to get rid of

  3825. a limb?

  3826. And the greatest

  3827. way we see

  3828. the heinousness

  3829. of sin

  3830. and the

  3831. graciousness of God

  3832. is at the cross

  3833. of Jesus Christ.

  3834. Our sins

  3835. were so bad

  3836. that Jesus

  3837. had to die.

  3838. The only

  3839. Son of God,

  3840. the sinless,

  3841. blameless

  3842. Son of God

3843. and the Son of Man

  3844. had to die

  3845. on the cross

  3846. as the atonement

  3847. for our sins.

  3848. And Jesus

  3849. did it gladly

  3850. because He knew

3851. it was the only way

  3852. He can redeem us

  3853. for Himself

  3854. so we can have

  3855. eternal life

  3856. with Him.

  3857. And if that's

  3858. the love

  3859. that the Son

  3860. of God

  3861. has shown us

  3862. and if the Son

  3863. of God,

  3864. the divine,

  3865. eternal Son

  3866. of God

  3867. laid down

  3868. His life

  3869. for us,

  3870. is it a sacrifice

  3871. for us

  3872. to lay down

  3873. our preferences,

  3874. our conveniences,

  3875. our desires

  3876. so that we can

  3877. run after,

  3878. run hard

  3879. and pursue

  3880. that eternal union

  3881. and fellowship

  3882. with Christ?

  3883. I think not.

  3884. Let's pray.

  3885. Father,

  3886. please grant us

  3887. humility,

  3888. childlike dependence

  3889. on You.

  3890. Oh, Lord,

  3891. give us

  3892. this eternal

  3893. perspective

  3894. without which

  3895. we cannot have

  3896. a heavenly

  3897. community.

  3898. Help us

  3899. to love

  3900. one another,

  3901. honor one another

  3902. as children

  3903. of the King,

  3904. and humble

  3905. ourselves

  3906. before one another

  3907. as children

  3908. who have

  3909. nothing to show

  3910. for ourselves

  3911. but the provision

  3912. and the protection

  3913. of our heavenly Father.

  3914. In Jesus' name

  3915. we pray.

  3916. Amen.

  3917. Amen.
