  1. Such a joy to be with you. See a lot of new faces today. My name is Ed, one of the pastors of Trinity Cambridge.

  2. ! It's my greatest pleasure to preach God's word this morning.

  3. Let's open up our Bibles as we continue on in our series in Matthew.

  4. If you don't have a physical copy of a Bible and would like one, feel free to raise your hand and we'd be happy to gift you one.

  5. You could take home and keep for yourself.

  6. Today we are in Matthew chapter 20.

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  7. Starting verse 17 all the way to the end of chapter 20.

  8. So, Matthew 20, 17 to 34.

  9. Matthew 20, 17 to 34.

  10. Please bow your heads as we come before the Lord in prayer.

  11. Heavenly Father.

  12. Heavenly Father.

  13. We are weary, broken, and tired from this week.

  14. We come before the Lord who invited us.

  15. Come.

  16. Find rest for your souls.

  17. We want to hear from you.

  18. We want to sit at your feet this morning.

  19. We want you to address us and to speak to us what we need to hear so that we would be more and more like you.

  20. That we would know your love and that we love others.

  21. Lord, we pray that you would address us so that we would learn how to humbly serve one another just like Christ you served us.

  22. Father, I pray that you would take the five loaves and two fish that I can offer and multiply it to feed the masses this morning.

  23. Your people are hungry.

  24. So, please feed them.

  25. In Jesus' name we pray.

  26. Amen.

  27. If you guys would rise.

  28. If you are able to honor the reading of God's word.

  29. What we're about to hear is really the only perfect part of this sermon.

  30. We're going to hear from God's infallible, inerrant word.

  31. Starting from verse 17.

  32. And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the 12 disciples aside.

  33. And on the way, he said to them,

  34. See, we are going up to Jerusalem.

  35. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes.

  36. And they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified.

  37. And he will be raised on the third day.

  38. Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons.

  39. And kneeling before him, she asked him for something.

  40. And he said to her,

  41. What do you want?

  42. She said to him,

  43. Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.

  44. Jesus answered,

  45. You do not know what you are asking.

  46. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?

  47. They said to him,

  48. We are able.

  49. He said to them,

  50. You will drink my cup,

  51. But to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant,

  52. but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.

  53. And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers.

  54. But Jesus called them,

  55. called them to him and said,

  56. You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,

  57. and their great ones exercise authority over them.

  58. It shall not be so among you.

  59. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,

  60. and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,

  61. even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve,

  62. and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  63. And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him.

  64. And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside.

  65. And when they heard that Jesus was passing by,

  66. they cried out,

  67. Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David.

  68. The crowd rebuked them,

  69. telling them to be silent.

  70. But they cried out all the more,

  71. Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David.

  72. And stopping,

  73. Jesus called them and said,

  74. What do you want me to do for you?

  75. They said to him,

  76. Lord, let our eyes be opened.

  77. And Jesus, in pity,

  78. touched their eyes,

  79. and immediately they recovered their sight

  80. and followed him.

  81. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  82. Please be seated.

  83. In early 2010,

  84. a catastrophic magnitude 7 earthquake

  85. struck the country of Haiti,

  86. leveling the already poorest country

  87. in the Western Hemisphere,

  88. killing more than 200,000 people,

  89. and leaving 1.5 million people homeless.

  90. That summer with my church,

  91. I visited Haiti

  92. and saw the aftermath for myself.

  93. It was unimaginable

  94. the kind of living conditions

  95. people suffered there.

  96. Sprawling tent cities

  97. with thousands and thousands of people

  98. living in an open field

  99. under makeshift tarps

  100. with no jobs,

  101. no safety,

  102. no money,

  103. no privacy,

  104. no running water,

  105. no electricity.

  106. So when the new president of Haiti,

  107. Michel Martelly,

  108. comes into power

  109. the very next year,

  110. you might expect him

  111. to do everything that he can

  112. to serve his people.

  113. But instead,

  114. even while knowing millions

  115. and millions of people

  116. live like this,

  117. he gives himself a budget

  118. of $20,000 a day

  119. to spend overseas,

  120. giving his wife

  121. and each of his family members

  122. $7,500 a day.

  123. He raises $40 million in tax

  124. with $25 million of that

  125. going unaccounted for.

  126. And this kind of corruption

  127. really is not anything new

  128. in the country's history.

  129. Nearly every single president

  130. has been like this.

  131. I remember one conversation

  132. that I had with a local

  133. asking him what he thinks

  134. this country needs

  135. to change for the better.

  136. And his answer was simple.

  137. We need leaders who serve us.

  138. Plainly put,

  139. one bad leader,

  140. just one bad leader,

  141. has a disproportionate power

  142. to inflict great harm.

  143. The Church of Jesus Christ

  144. has not been immune

  145. to bad leadership.

  146. Not all leaders

  147. in the church are bad.

  148. There are faithful pastors

  149. out there.

  150. But in recent years,

  151. the church has suffered

  152. reports of moral failure

  153. by some of its most

  154. prominent leaders.

  155. And it's not just the pastors

  156. who are in the national spotlight.

  157. These reports can come from

  158. big and small churches.

  159. From rich and poor churches.

  160. From denominational,

  161. non-denominational churches.

  162. Some groom others

  163. to commit adultery.

  164. Misappropriate funds.

  165. Plagiarize.

  166. Bully people.

  167. What we need today,

  168. both in and out

  169. of the church,

  170. is not a wholesale change

  171. to remove leadership,

  172. but to transform leadership.

  173. And it's not just the change

  174. needed for all current

  175. and future leaders.

  176. These leaders only represent

  177. the sinful nature

  178. that's in every single one of us.

  179. If we were in their positions

  180. of unchecked power,

  181. how might we be corrupted?

  182. For there is a bent

  183. in every single one of us

  184. to stand above others,

  185. use others,

  186. compete with others,

  187. try to stuff others down.

  188. Even in our lives today,

  189. in our social circles,

  190. we undermine colleagues,

  191. gossip about friends,

  192. keep score with our spouses,

  193. use the silent treatment,

  194. try to keep others down,

  195. and judge others.

  196. Is this not how we try

  197. to lord it over

  198. and exercise authority

  199. over the people in our lives?

  200. Is it not our most natural,

  201. unlearned instinct

  202. to try to look out

  203. for number one

  204. at the expense

  205. of those around us?

  206. And we know what

  207. that kind of treatment begets.

  208. Only more of the same

  209. right back at us, right?

  210. In an endless cycle

  211. of competition,

  212. envy, bitterness,

  213. and strife,

  214. for all our achievements

  215. in society,

  216. we still haven't found

  217. to break out of this cycle.

  218. Left to ourselves,

  219. we never will.

  220. We need something,

  221. or rather someone,

  222. to break the cycle.

  223. That's exactly who

  224. Jesus Christ is.

  225. Though he be a great king,

  226. Jesus came not to be served,

  227. but to serve,

  228. and to give his life

  229. as a ransom for many.

  230. Then and only then,

  231. when we understand this,

  232. when we have been served

  233. by him,

  234. then we learn how

  235. to serve others.

  236. Begin to see

  237. that cycle broken.

  238. That's the main point

  239. of my sermon today,

  240. is to serve.

  241. Serve because Christ

  242. first served us.

  243. And in turn,

  244. we'll observe

  245. really everything

  246. in this passage,

  247. how Jesus does

  248. everything to serve.

  249. He serves with his words,

  250. he serves with his very life,

  251. and he serves

  252. with his hands.

  253. For the first time

  254. in Matthew,

  255. Jerusalem is not

  256. a distant future,

  257. but it's a near reality.

  258. It's not a place

  259. that he will go to,

  260. or must go to,

  261. but he is going to,

  262. as he goes up

  263. to Jerusalem.

  264. Matthew accurately captures

  265. the vertical movement

  266. necessary when going

  267. to Jerusalem

  268. with that word up,

  269. because it was more than

  270. 3,000 feet of elevation

  271. over 17 miles.

  272. And it's these little details

  273. in the text

  274. that suggest to me

  275. that truly the gospel

  276. was indeed written

  277. by a first century Jew

  278. who lived at the time

  279. of Jesus.

  280. And he just knew

  281. these cultural details.

  282. Not by religious zealots

  283. or liars or fakers

  284. who fabricated these texts

  285. centuries later.

  286. No, this was truly written

  287. by Jesus' disciples.

  288. The gospel writers

  289. just knew these details

  290. because they lived it.

  291. Just like how we Bostonians,

  292. we Canterbridgeans,

  293. we just know that

  294. driving through I-93,

  295. the tunnels,

  296. will make you lose your GPS

  297. and probably make you

  298. lose your exit.

  299. Or that the red line's AC

  300. is just down half the time

  301. in the summer.

  302. On the way,

  303. Jesus pulls aside

  304. his 12 disciples,

  305. presumably from the large crowd

  306. that is following him,

  307. and he confides to them

  308. his third and final

  309. passion prediction.

  310. In chapters 16 and 17,

  311. Jesus has already predicted

  312. that he must go to Jerusalem

  313. for his death and resurrection.

  314. But knowing that the time

  315. is soon coming,

  316. unlike before,

  317. he prophesies

  318. with the greatest detail

  319. and specificity yet.

  320. He predicts seven specific things

  321. that will happen to him.

  322. That number one,

  323. he will be delivered over

  324. to the Jewish chief priests

  325. and scribes.

  326. Number two,

  327. be condemned to death.

  328. Number three,

  329. because the Romans

  330. controlled capital punishment,

  331. the Jews will deliver him

  332. over to the Romans.

  333. Four,

  334. to be mocked.

  335. Five,

  336. flogged.

  337. Six,

  338. crucified.

  339. And seven,

  340. most importantly,

  341. he will be raised

  342. on the third day.

  343. Jesus gives the play-by-play.

  344. He knows every detail

  345. down to excruciating details.

  346. He would be hated

  347. by Jew and Gentile alike,

  348. a rare collaboration

  349. from these polar opposite groups.

  350. Like oil and water,

  351. these two groups

  352. have not historically mixed,

  353. but their hatred,

  354. their rejection of Jesus

  355. emulsify them together.

  356. Together,

  357. they would mock the God

  358. who made their mouths,

  359. flog the God

  360. who made their hands,

  361. and kill the God

  362. who gave them life.

  363. Why does Jesus predict this

  364. up to three times

  365. with greater specificity?

  366. Right?

  367. The Bible adamantly refuses

  368. to give any notion

  369. that Jesus' life

  370. was taken against his will.

  371. His death was anything

  372. but a miscalculation

  373. or an accident.

  374. To those on the outside,

  375. it may look like the Jews

  376. and the Romans

  377. had the last say,

  378. but these predictions

  379. really show

  380. the hidden truth

  381. that they were mere pawns

  382. in the master's hand.

  383. Jesus wants to make it clear

  384. that he absolutely

  385. already knew

  386. the unimaginable suffering

  387. that awaited him.

  388. And yet we see him

  389. striving up that hill,

  390. fighting against gravity

  391. with every step,

  392. determined to get to the cup

  393. that he's determined,

  394. already determined,

  395. to drink.

  396. But that's not just

  397. to defend himself.

  398. I think with these

  399. three predictions,

  400. the always serving Jesus

  401. is looking to serve

  402. his disciples

  403. by drilling these words

  404. into their heads,

  405. by the power of repetition.

  406. For repetition

  407. is the hammer

  408. that drives

  409. the nails of truth

  410. deeper

  411. and deeper

  412. and deeper

  413. into our hardened hearts.

  414. And especially

  415. on those days,

  416. those days filled

  417. with grief

  418. and suffering,

  419. the muscle memory

  420. of reciting,

  421. hearing,

  422. memorizing God's word,

  423. it's lodged

  424. into our hearts

  425. by the sheer force

  426. of repetition.

  427. It fills our mouths

  428. with truths

  429. that we need most

  430. when we can't possibly

  431. drum it up ourselves.

  432. And that's exactly

  433. how Jesus intended

  434. to serve his disciples

  435. with this repetition.

  436. He knew that the suffering,

  437. it was coming for him,

  438. but he also knew

  439. that the sadness,

  440. confusion,

  441. the shame

  442. that disciples

  443. would experience

  444. at the death

  445. of their master,

  446. that was coming too

  447. for them.

  448. So he repeats

  449. this prediction

  450. again

  451. and again

  452. and again.

  453. Three times

  454. so that when

  455. the bottom fell out,

  456. they would be anchored

  457. by these very words.

  458. And be reassured

  459. that Jesus

  460. truly was

  461. the Messiah.

  462. Jesus wanted them

  463. to know

  464. that he was

  465. in control

  466. over his suffering.

  467. Not just in control,

  468. but that he would have

  469. ultimate victory

  470. over it.

  471. Raised again

  472. on the third day

  473. in triumphant victory.

  474. Repetition

  475. can have

  476. that kind of power

  477. in our darkest

  478. of days.

  479. As an example,

  480. I think of

  481. Todd Beamer.

  482. On September 11th,

  483. Todd was aboard

  484. Flight 93

  485. on a routine

  486. work flight

  487. when four

  488. Al-Qaeda terrorists

  489. hijacked

  490. the flight.

  491. Their plan

  492. was to crash

  493. the plane

  494. into a building

  495. in Washington,

  496. D.C.

  497. After realizing

  498. that they were

  499. not going to get

  500. out of this alive,

  501. Todd and the

  502. other passengers

  503. courageously

  504. decided to storm

  505. the cockpit

  506. and jump

  507. the hijackers.

  508. But not before

  509. he recited

  510. the Lord's Prayer

  511. in Psalm 23

  512. out loud

  513. with the other

  514. passengers.

  515. Here's Lisa Beamer,

  516. his wife

  517. and the mother

  518. of his two children

  519. that he left

  520. behind,

  521. recounting the story.

  522. Although I'd never

  523. heard of,

  524. I'd never before

  525. heard of Todd

  526. reciting the Lord's Prayer

  527. in pressure situations,

  528. I wasn't surprised

  529. to hear he had

  530. quoted it.

  531. Recently,

  532. our pastor

  533. had taught

  534. a 12-week series

  535. of lessons

  536. on the Lord's Prayer.

  537. Todd had known

  538. the prayer

  539. since childhood,

  540. but each line

  541. of it had become

  542. more and more special

  543. to him as he understood

  544. how fraught

  545. with meaning

  546. it really was.

  547. And she goes on

  548. to say,

  549. interestingly,

  550. Psalm 23

  551. wasn't a mantra

  552. that Todd

  553. recited often,

  554. but it was

  555. resident

  556. in his spirit

  557. because he had

  558. learned it

  559. as a child.

  560. When the crisis

  561. came,

  562. Todd was able

  563. to tap

  564. into a deep

  565. reservoir

  566. of faith

  567. that he had

  568. been storing

  569. up for years.

  570. once he found

  571. courage

  572. in those words,

  573. in God's words,

  574. he took a deep

  575. breath

  576. and said

  577. to his fellow

  578. passengers,

  579. are you ready?

  580. Okay.

  581. Let's roll.

  582. And stormed

  583. the cockpit

  584. with a food trolley

  585. and prevented

  586. the terrorists

  587. from hitting

  588. their intended target.

  589. That's the power

  590. of repetition.

  591. still so far,

  592. it doesn't seem

  593. like it has

  594. its intended

  595. effect on the

  596. disciples.

  597. Right?

  598. The disciples

  599. show again

  600. and again

  601. that they still

  602. don't get

  603. what Jesus

  604. is saying.

  605. After the first

  606. prediction,

  607. Peter makes

  608. a fool

  609. out of himself

  610. telling Jesus

  611. that this would

  612. never happen

  613. to you,

  614. Lord.

  615. After the second

  616. prediction,

  617. the disciples

  618. debate who

  619. will be the

  620. greatest.

  621. we'll see

  622. how this

  623. pattern

  624. continues

  625. then after

  626. this third

  627. prediction.

  628. It starts

  629. with meeting

  630. an unfamiliar

  631. character

  632. with an

  633. unusual

  634. request.

  635. The mother

  636. of the sons

  637. of Zebedee,

  638. James,

  639. who's not

  640. to be confused

  641. with James

  642. the half-brother

  643. of Jesus,

  644. and John

  645. the beloved

  646. apostle who

  647. wrote many

  648. books of the

  649. Bible,

  650. their mother

  651. enters scene

  652. for the first

  653. time.

  654. She bows

  655. her knee

  656. before Jesus.

  657. people back

  658. then didn't

  659. typically kneel

  660. before an

  661. ordinary rabbi

  662. or a teacher.

  663. This was a

  664. posture of

  665. someone standing

  666. before a

  667. king.

  668. In Jesus,

  669. by faith,

  670. she rightly

  671. sees that he

  672. is going to be

  673. the next king

  674. of Israel.

  675. So after being

  676. prompted by

  677. Jesus,

  678. she makes

  679. an extraordinary

  680. bold request.

  681. say that

  682. these two

  683. sons of

  684. mine are

  685. to sit,

  686. one at

  687. your right

  688. hand,

  689. one at

  690. your left,

  691. in your

  692. kingdom.

  693. Before

  694. everyone else,

  695. make my

  696. two sons

  697. the most

  698. honored

  699. persons in

  700. your world

  701. changing,

  702. systems

  703. breaking

  704. kingdom.

  705. It's

  706. interesting to

  707. note that

  708. in Mark's

  709. account,

  710. the mother

  711. is actually

  712. absent,

  713. and the

  714. request comes

  715. directly from

  716. the sons

  717. themselves.

  718. I think

  719. this hints

  720. that while

  721. mom was

  722. the one

  723. to approach

  724. Jesus,

  725. as any

  726. good mama

  727. would do

  728. to vouch

  729. for her

  730. sons,

  731. the sons,

  732. it seems

  733. like,

  734. were the

  735. masterminds.

  736. Jesus

  737. confirms this

  738. by quickly

  739. bypassing

  740. the mother

  741. and directly

  742. addressing

  743. James and

  744. John.

  745. And if you

  746. know anything

  747. about them,

  748. it fits their

  749. profile perfectly.

  750. These are

  751. the same

  752. men who

  753. asked Jesus

  754. if they

  755. should call

  756. down fire

  757. to obliterate

  758. a Samaritan

  759. village that

  760. rejected them,

  761. and whom

  762. Jesus nicknamed

  763. the sons of

  764. thunder for

  765. their boisterous,

  766. blustering

  767. personalities.

  768. This is the

  769. kind of people

  770. that they

  771. are.

  772. Where do

  773. they get

  774. such a

  775. request?

  776. From

  777. last week's

  778. passage,

  779. Jesus'

  780. promise rings

  781. in their

  782. ears.

  783. Truly I

  784. say to

  785. you,

  786. in a new

  787. world,

  788. when the

  789. son of

  790. man will

  791. sit on

  792. his

  793. glorious

  794. throne,

  795. you who

  796. have

  797. followed

  798. me will

  799. also

  800. sit on

  801. twelve

  802. thrones,

  803. judging

  804. the twelve

  805. tribes of

  806. Israel.

  807. Considering

  808. what we

  809. read in

  810. our passage

  811. today,

  812. I think

  813. we catch

  814. x-ray

  815. vision into

  816. the son's

  817. hearts when

  818. they hear

  819. this promise.

  820. James and

  821. John are

  822. no-name

  823. Galilean

  824. fishermen,

  825. who are

  826. sons of

  827. a no-name

  828. Galilean

  829. fisherman.

  830. These men

  831. are the

  832. obscure of

  833. the obscure.

  834. If Jesus

  835. hadn't chosen

  836. them as

  837. disciples,

  838. their legacy,

  839. their memory

  840. would have

  841. quickly been

  842. erased off

  843. the face

  844. of the

  845. earth.

  846. But instead

  847. of being

  848. floored that

  849. even they,

  850. even they

  851. get to sit

  852. on thrones

  853. in the new

  854. creation,

  855. we see that

  856. in the heart

  857. of hearts.

  858. In their

  859. heart of

  860. hearts,

  861. it was not

  862. enough.

  863. Jesus'

  864. grand promise

  865. doesn't satisfy

  866. their insatiable,

  867. greedy appetites.

  868. consider,

  869. too,

  870. that if

  871. they sit

  872. at the

  873. right and

  874. left hand

  875. of Jesus,

  876. then where

  877. will Peter

  878. sit?

  879. Maybe that's

  880. just their

  881. point.

  882. Perhaps

  883. they saw

  884. Peter as

  885. vulnerable,

  886. the chosen

  887. leader,

  888. his head

  889. will fall.

  890. After all,

  891. he did just

  892. get rebuked

  893. and called

  894. Satan four

  895. chapters ago.

  896. maybe they

  897. think it's

  898. their time

  899. to take

  900. the top

  901. spot.

  902. To all

  903. this,

  904. Jesus has

  905. one simple

  906. response to

  907. this political

  908. power play.

  909. You don't

  910. know what

  911. you are

  912. asking for.

  913. Jesus knows

  914. that these

  915. slow disciples

  916. still think

  917. and hope

  918. that Jesus

  919. is going

  920. into Jerusalem

  921. guns blazing

  922. to inaugurate

  923. the era

  924. of military

  925. and political

  926. peace for

  927. the nation

  928. of Israel.

  929. But really,

  930. there's more

  931. to their

  932. misunderstanding.

  933. In Jesus'

  934. mind,

  935. they completely

  936. misunderstand

  937. the nature

  938. of leadership.

  939. For to

  940. Jesus,

  941. leadership

  942. is not

  943. to be

  944. first in

  945. line to

  946. be glorified,

  947. but it's

  948. first in

  949. line to

  950. suffer.

  951. If you

  952. wish to

  953. be seated

  954. in the

  955. heavenly

  956. places,

  957. in the

  958. highest

  959. places,

  960. be ready

  961. to suffer.

  962. God,

  963. he asks,

  964. do you

  965. know what

  966. you're

  967. asking for?

  968. Do you

  969. know that

  970. positions of

  971. power and

  972. authority come

  973. with all the

  974. burden of

  975. power and

  976. authority?

  977. Do you

  978. know that

  979. to be at

  980. the center

  981. of attention

  982. means that

  983. you are at

  984. the center

  985. of attention

  986. and with

  987. all the

  988. scrutiny

  989. that entails?

  990. Do you

  991. know that

  992. in earthly

  993. kingdoms,

  994. importance is

  995. defined by

  996. how many

  997. people serve

  998. you,

  999. but in

  1000. my kingdom

  1001. importance is

  1002. defined by

  1003. how many

  1004. people you

  1005. serve?

  1006. Do you

  1007. know that

  1008. glory only

  1009. comes after

  1010. great suffering?

  1011. Are you

  1012. able to

  1013. drink the

  1014. cup that

  1015. I am to

  1016. drink?

  1017. Here,

  1018. Jesus so

  1019. clearly ties

  1020. the ascension

  1021. of glory to

  1022. the drinking

  1023. of a cup.

  1024. And what

  1025. cup is

  1026. this?

  1027. We all

  1028. know it's

  1029. the cup that

  1030. Jesus refers

  1031. to in the

  1032. garden,

  1033. the garden

  1034. of Gethsemane.

  1035. He knows

  1036. that his

  1037. one mission

  1038. is to

  1039. drink down

  1040. to the

  1041. dregs the

  1042. undiluted

  1043. cup of

  1044. wrath on

  1045. behalf of

  1046. God's

  1047. people.

  1048. And it's

  1049. this cup

  1050. that would

  1051. cause Jesus

  1052. incredible

  1053. suffering.

  1054. A cup that

  1055. he asked to

  1056. be removed

  1057. from him,

  1058. not once,

  1059. but twice.

  1060. A cup that

  1061. even the

  1062. thought of

  1063. causes Jesus

  1064. to sweat

  1065. great drops

  1066. of blood.

  1067. Notably,

  1068. the only

  1069. other time

  1070. this exact

  1071. phrase,

  1072. one on

  1073. the right

  1074. and one

  1075. on the

  1076. left,

  1077. is used

  1078. in Matthew

  1079. is when

  1080. Jesus is

  1081. hanging on

  1082. the cross.

  1083. When Jesus

  1084. is enthroned

  1085. as king

  1086. on the cross,

  1087. when his title,

  1088. King of the

  1089. Jews,

  1090. is plastered in

  1091. multiple languages

  1092. so that all

  1093. can see.

  1094. When people

  1095. cry out,

  1096. Hail,

  1097. King of the

  1098. Jews!

  1099. Matthew 27,

  1100. 38 says,

  1101. then two

  1102. were crucified

  1103. with him,

  1104. one on the

  1105. right and

  1106. one on the

  1107. left.

  1108. But these

  1109. are not

  1110. James and

  1111. John,

  1112. or Peter

  1113. or Andrew,

  1114. or any of

  1115. the disciples

  1116. as a matter

  1117. of fact.

  1118. They confidently

  1119. say,

  1120. we can drink

  1121. this cup.

  1122. But when push

  1123. comes to shove,

  1124. and the cup

  1125. gets passed

  1126. to them,

  1127. when the

  1128. prospect of

  1129. death stares

  1130. them right

  1131. in the face,

  1132. not one

  1133. of them

  1134. stands next

  1135. to Jesus.

  1136. They all

  1137. run off,

  1138. scatter off

  1139. in the middle

  1140. of the night

  1141. to abandon

  1142. their Lord,

  1143. to leave

  1144. robbers and

  1145. criminals the

  1146. honor of

  1147. dying next

  1148. to Jesus,

  1149. one on the

  1150. right,

  1151. one on the

  1152. left.

  1153. But just

  1154. like Peter

  1155. has his

  1156. redemption

  1157. story,

  1158. these other

  1159. two will,

  1160. and it's

  1161. remarkable that

  1162. we think

  1163. that a

  1164. redemption

  1165. story is

  1166. to die.

  1167. Jesus knows

  1168. that they

  1169. will eventually

  1170. partake of

  1171. this cup,

  1172. not to

  1173. drink down

  1174. to the

  1175. dregs the

  1176. wrath of

  1177. God on

  1178. behalf of

  1179. other sinners,

  1180. but truly

  1181. the cup

  1182. of suffering.

  1183. For James

  1184. will be

  1185. executed in

  1186. Acts 12

  1187. at the

  1188. hand of

  1189. Herod,

  1190. and John

  1191. will be

  1192. cast out

  1193. on the

  1194. island of

  1195. Patmos

  1196. in exile.

  1197. But even

  1198. then,

  1199. it is not

  1200. Jesus'

  1201. place to

  1202. grant them

  1203. to sit

  1204. at the

  1205. left,

  1206. to sit

  1207. at the

  1208. right,

  1209. but it's

  1210. only the

  1211. fathers.

  1212. Jesus models

  1213. this self-effacing

  1214. humility.

  1215. It's confirmed

  1216. by these

  1217. famous verses

  1218. in Philippians

  1219. 2.

  1220. do nothing

  1221. from selfish

  1222. ambition or

  1223. conceit,

  1224. but in

  1225. humility

  1226. count others

  1227. more significant

  1228. than yourselves.

  1229. Let each

  1230. of you look

  1231. not only to

  1232. his own

  1233. interests,

  1234. but also to

  1235. the interests

  1236. of others.

  1237. Have this

  1238. mind among

  1239. yourselves,

  1240. which is

  1241. yours in

  1242. Christ Jesus,

  1243. who though

  1244. he was in

  1245. the form of

  1246. God,

  1247. did not

  1248. count equality

  1249. with God

  1250. a thing to

  1251. be grasped,

  1252. but emptied

  1253. himself by

  1254. taking the

  1255. form of a

  1256. servant,

  1257. being born in

  1258. the likeness

  1259. of men.

  1260. The sons

  1261. of thunder

  1262. grasped at

  1263. something that

  1264. wasn't theirs.

  1265. Jesus refused

  1266. to grasp at

  1267. something that

  1268. was rightfully

  1269. his.

  1270. As the

  1271. incarnate

  1272. son humbles

  1273. himself in

  1274. total submission

  1275. to the father,

  1276. though they are

  1277. equal,

  1278. fully equal in

  1279. intrinsic power

  1280. and essence

  1281. and authority,

  1282. he humbles

  1283. himself.

  1284. And because

  1285. of that

  1286. submission,

  1287. Jesus says,

  1288. that's why he

  1289. says,

  1290. to sit at

  1291. my right and

  1292. left is not

  1293. mine to

  1294. grant,

  1295. but it is

  1296. for those

  1297. to whom it

  1298. has been

  1299. prepared by

  1300. my father.

  1301. At its

  1302. very core,

  1303. what these

  1304. brothers get

  1305. wrong is

  1306. summed up by

  1307. theologian

  1308. Francis Schaeffer.

  1309. Christ says,

  1310. we are to

  1311. take the

  1312. lowest spot,

  1313. but we like

  1314. to take the

  1315. higher.

  1316. But this

  1317. is not

  1318. the Lord's

  1319. way.

  1320. Leadership

  1321. is not

  1322. to be

  1323. sought.

  1324. Leadership

  1325. is to

  1326. be waited

  1327. for.

  1328. To the

  1329. extent we

  1330. want power

  1331. among men,

  1332. to that

  1333. extent we

  1334. are in the

  1335. flesh and

  1336. not the

  1337. Holy Spirit.

  1338. The extent

  1339. to which I

  1340. demand

  1341. leadership,

  1342. I am not

  1343. ready to be

  1344. a leader.

  1345. leader.

  1346. It is a

  1347. noble aspiration

  1348. to pursue

  1349. leadership for

  1350. the sake of

  1351. serving others,

  1352. as the

  1353. Apostle Paul

  1354. affirms in

  1355. 1 Timothy 3

  1356. regarding

  1357. eldership in

  1358. the church.

  1359. But the

  1360. manner by

  1361. which you

  1362. do so is

  1363. of utmost

  1364. importance.

  1365. Are you

  1366. seeking the

  1367. power and

  1368. the prestige

  1369. of leadership,

  1370. leadership,

  1371. or are you

  1372. seeking the

  1373. cup of

  1374. suffering that

  1375. leadership entails?

  1376. This

  1377. fundamental

  1378. mistake isn't

  1379. exclusive to

  1380. James and

  1381. John.

  1382. When the

  1383. ten hear

  1384. this, they

  1385. are fuming

  1386. mad.

  1387. They're indignant

  1388. at the

  1389. brothers.

  1390. They're probably

  1391. bickering with

  1392. one another.

  1393. Probably they're

  1394. already scheming

  1395. on how to get

  1396. back at the

  1397. brothers.

  1398. So the

  1399. ever-patient

  1400. Jesus, their

  1401. teacher, he

  1402. calls them to

  1403. him and says

  1404. these words,

  1405. you know that

  1406. the rulers of

  1407. the Gentiles

  1408. lorded over

  1409. them and

  1410. their great

  1411. ones exercised

  1412. authority over

  1413. them.

  1414. The Jews know

  1415. precisely what

  1416. Jesus is talking

  1417. about.

  1418. Under the

  1419. boot of Roman

  1420. rule and

  1421. oppression, the

  1422. Jews suffered

  1423. greatly.

  1424. In the

  1425. original Greek

  1426. lorded over

  1427. and exercised

  1428. authority over,

  1429. both are words

  1430. that start with

  1431. the prefix

  1432. Kata, which

  1433. means down.

  1434. The picture is

  1435. clear.

  1436. Their leaders

  1437. stuff others

  1438. down, keep

  1439. others down,

  1440. so that they

  1441. can prop

  1442. themselves up.

  1443. They treat

  1444. their people like

  1445. mere stepping

  1446. stones.

  1447. But Jesus

  1448. says clearly,

  1449. it shall not

  1450. be so among

  1451. you.

  1452. Instead, if we

  1453. want to be

  1454. great, we

  1455. ought to be

  1456. one another's

  1457. servant.

  1458. Not just a

  1459. servant, but a

  1460. slave.

  1461. And what do

  1462. servants do?

  1463. What do

  1464. slaves do?

  1465. They assume

  1466. the lowliest

  1467. of positions,

  1468. willing to do

  1469. the lowliest

  1470. of tasks, and

  1471. they serve.

  1472. If we want to

  1473. be great in

  1474. the kingdom

  1475. of God, there

  1476. needs to be an

  1477. eagerness, a

  1478. hunger, a

  1479. yearning to

  1480. serve in any

  1481. which way that

  1482. we can.

  1483. At home, at

  1484. church, at

  1485. work, wherever

  1486. we go, we

  1487. ought to have a

  1488. maximalist view

  1489. of how much we

  1490. can get to

  1491. serve.

  1492. Not a

  1493. minimalist

  1494. view, just

  1495. trying to squeak

  1496. by with the

  1497. bare minimum.

  1498. At every

  1499. opportunity to

  1500. serve one

  1501. another, the

  1502. question shouldn't

  1503. be, why should

  1504. I serve, but

  1505. why shouldn't

  1506. I?

  1507. But some

  1508. object, oh,

  1509. but I don't

  1510. have that gift.

  1511. I can't serve

  1512. in that way.

  1513. Or others

  1514. object, but

  1515. other people

  1516. don't serve as

  1517. much as me.

  1518. Others still,

  1519. when I serve,

  1520. it's never

  1521. appreciated.

  1522. this is not

  1523. the acceptable

  1524. language of a

  1525. servant slave.

  1526. Luke 17

  1527. shows us what

  1528. the acceptable

  1529. pattern of

  1530. speech of a

  1531. slave is.

  1532. Jesus says,

  1533. will any one

  1534. of you who

  1535. has a servant

  1536. plowing or

  1537. keeping sheep

  1538. say to him

  1539. when he has

  1540. come in from

  1541. the field,

  1542. come at once

  1543. and recline

  1544. at table.

  1545. Will he not

  1546. rather say to

  1547. him, prepare

  1548. supper for me,

  1549. dress properly,

  1550. serve me when

  1551. I eat and

  1552. drink, and

  1553. afterward will

  1554. eat and

  1555. drink.

  1556. Does he

  1557. thank the

  1558. servant because

  1559. he did what

  1560. was commanded?

  1561. So you also,

  1562. when you have

  1563. done all that

  1564. you were

  1565. commanded, say,

  1566. we are

  1567. unworthy

  1568. servants.

  1569. We have only

  1570. done what was

  1571. our duty.

  1572. Last week,

  1573. Sean introduced

  1574. Jim Elliott,

  1575. a martyred

  1576. !

  1577. a martyred

  1578. missionary to

  1579. a tribe in

  1580. Ecuador.

  1581. I quote him

  1582. again this week

  1583. saying missionaries

  1584. and really

  1585. all Christians

  1586. are very human

  1587. folk, just

  1588. doing what

  1589. they were

  1590. asked.

  1591. Simply a

  1592. bunch of

  1593. nobodies

  1594. trying to

  1595. exalt

  1596. somebody.

  1597. But if we

  1598. are serving

  1599. that much,

  1600. shouldn't we

  1601. be concerned

  1602. with burnout,

  1603. burning out?

  1604. Yes,

  1605. absolutely.

  1606. We shouldn't

  1607. burn ourselves

  1608. out.

  1609. We absolutely

  1610. need sleep.

  1611. We need

  1612. Sabbath rest.

  1613. But we

  1614. don't

  1615. primarily

  1616. guard

  1617. ourselves

  1618. against

  1619. burnout

  1620. by first

  1621. guarding

  1622. our

  1623. calendars.

  1624. We guard

  1625. against

  1626. burnout

  1627. by guarding

  1628. our

  1629. hearts.

  1630. We don't

  1631. burn out

  1632. primarily

  1633. because we

  1634. mismanage

  1635. our calendars

  1636. and we

  1637. don't take

  1638. enough

  1639. Sabbaths.

  1640. We burn

  1641. out

  1642. primarily

  1643. because we

  1644. mismanage

  1645. our hearts.

  1646. And now

  1647. a mismanaged

  1648. heart often

  1649. results in

  1650. a mismanaged

  1651. calendar,

  1652. but the

  1653. source of

  1654. the error

  1655. is not

  1656. in the

  1657. planning,

  1658. but it's

  1659. in the

  1660. heart,

  1661. in your

  1662. loves.

  1663. For we

  1664. serve really

  1665. out of so

  1666. many wrong

  1667. reasons.

  1668. We serve

  1669. Jesus to

  1670. be good

  1671. enough for

  1672. him,

  1673. to get

  1674. something for

  1675. him,

  1676. to pay

  1677. him back,

  1678. or because

  1679. we think

  1680. he needs

  1681. us.

  1682. We serve

  1683. others to

  1684. impress

  1685. them or

  1686. to feel

  1687. like we

  1688. belong.

  1689. And if

  1690. you're feeling

  1691. burnt out

  1692. this morning,

  1693. and I mean

  1694. more than

  1695. just feeling

  1696. physically

  1697. tired,

  1698. but emotionally,

  1699. mentally,

  1700. spiritually tapped

  1701. out,

  1702. you might

  1703. struggle with

  1704. one or a few

  1705. of these wrong

  1706. motivations to

  1707. serve.

  1708. So then,

  1709. how do we

  1710. serve

  1711. sacrificially

  1712. without feeling

  1713. weary,

  1714. discouraged,

  1715. or bitter?

  1716. The key is in

  1717. this critical

  1718. verse,

  1719. verse 28,

  1720. that the

  1721. son of man,

  1722. this son of man

  1723. came not to be

  1724. served,

  1725. but to serve,

  1726. and to give

  1727. his life as a

  1728. ransom for

  1729. many.

  1730. Serving is

  1731. the very

  1732. DNA of

  1733. Jesus'

  1734. purpose and

  1735. ministry.

  1736. We see it

  1737. throughout the

  1738. passage today,

  1739. we see it so

  1740. beautifully displayed

  1741. in John 13

  1742. when he

  1743. washes the

  1744. feet of his

  1745. disciples.

  1746. Can you

  1747. imagine this?

  1748. The God

  1749. who laid

  1750. the foundations

  1751. of the world,

  1752. who tells

  1753. each lightning

  1754. bolt where

  1755. it should

  1756. go,

  1757. who keeps

  1758. the Leviathan

  1759. on a

  1760. leash,

  1761. this same

  1762. God has

  1763. a towel

  1764. around his

  1765. waist.

  1766. This man

  1767. about whom

  1768. John the

  1769. Baptist rightly

  1770. declared,

  1771. I am not

  1772. worthy to

  1773. untie even

  1774. the strap

  1775. of his

  1776. sandal,

  1777. he kneels

  1778. and washes

  1779. my feet.

  1780. Surely that's

  1781. as far as

  1782. the Christ

  1783. would go to

  1784. serve me,

  1785. right?

  1786. someone who

  1787. is as

  1788. proud,

  1789. self-serving,

  1790. rebellious as

  1791. me,

  1792. surely a

  1793. king like

  1794. Jesus would

  1795. do no more

  1796. than to

  1797. kneel and

  1798. wash my

  1799. feet.

  1800. Surely there

  1801. must be a

  1802. limit.

  1803. But there's

  1804. no limit

  1805. to how far

  1806. Jesus would

  1807. go to

  1808. abase

  1809. himself for

  1810. the many

  1811. he would

  1812. ransom.

  1813. For he

  1814. showed the

  1815. greatest

  1816. display of

  1817. love that

  1818. we know

  1819. by trekking

  1820. up that

  1821. hill,

  1822. being

  1823. locked,

  1824. flogged,

  1825. crucified.

  1826. This God

  1827. endured

  1828. treatment that

  1829. we would

  1830. find inexcusable

  1831. for our

  1832. very own

  1833. pet dogs.

  1834. But he

  1835. subjected

  1836. himself because

  1837. he knew

  1838. that his

  1839. blood was

  1840. the only

  1841. way for

  1842. sinners like

  1843. you and me

  1844. to be

  1845. ransomed,

  1846. to be

  1847. redeemed from

  1848. our bondage

  1849. to sin and

  1850. death.

  1851. Nothing but

  1852. the blood

  1853. of Jesus.

  1854. Some in

  1855. church history

  1856. have posited

  1857. that money

  1858. could ransom

  1859. a man.

  1860. Johann

  1861. Tetzel,

  1862. the early

  1863. 16th century

  1864. Dominican

  1865. friar,

  1866. peddled

  1867. indulgences

  1868. that if one

  1869. gives money

  1870. to the church,

  1871. he can free

  1872. a soul

  1873. from purgatory,

  1874. which doesn't

  1875. even exist.

  1876. But the

  1877. famous rhyme,

  1878. as soon as

  1879. the coin

  1880. hits the

  1881. coffer,

  1882. or as soon

  1883. as the coin

  1884. in the

  1885. coffer

  1886. rings,

  1887. the soul

  1888. from purgatory

  1889. springs.

  1890. Reformer

  1891. Martin Luther

  1892. was absolutely

  1893. right to

  1894. denounce this

  1895. as a greedy,

  1896. manipulative,

  1897. false teaching.

  1898. Even if you

  1899. were to amass

  1900. all the wealth

  1901. of the world,

  1902. could you not

  1903. even pay back

  1904. for one sin?

  1905. And as we

  1906. read from our

  1907. assurance of

  1908. pardon,

  1909. it was not

  1910. with perishable

  1911. things,

  1912. such as silver

  1913. or gold,

  1914. you were redeemed,

  1915. but with the

  1916. precious blood

  1917. of Christ,

  1918. the lamb

  1919. without blemish

  1920. or object,

  1921. nothing but

  1922. the blood

  1923. of Jesus.

  1924. Others in

  1925. church history

  1926. have posited

  1927. that good

  1928. works,

  1929. that human

  1930. effort could

  1931. functionally

  1932. ransom a

  1933. man.

  1934. Pelagius in

  1935. the fourth

  1936. century argued

  1937. that even

  1938. without God's

  1939. transforming grace,

  1940. human beings

  1941. innately have

  1942. the ability

  1943. to do good.

  1944. We innately

  1945. have the ability

  1946. to earn our

  1947. standing before

  1948. God.

  1949. Augustine was

  1950. absolutely right

  1951. to denounce

  1952. this as a

  1953. presumptuous,

  1954. man-centered,

  1955. graceless,

  1956. false teaching.

  1957. You cannot

  1958. obey God

  1959. without the

  1960. grace of

  1961. God,

  1962. and even if

  1963. you were able

  1964. to spend

  1965. every single

  1966. minute of the

  1967. rest of your

  1968. life doing

  1969. good deeds

  1970. perfectly,

  1971. could you not

  1972. pay back

  1973. for one sin?

  1974. Nothing but

  1975. the blood of

  1976. Jesus.

  1977. So knowing

  1978. that this was

  1979. the only way

  1980. to free us

  1981. from our

  1982. miserable

  1983. bondage,

  1984. even knowing

  1985. that we had

  1986. nothing to

  1987. offer him,

  1988. Jesus came.

  1989. He came not

  1990. to be served

  1991. but to serve.

  1992. Do you see

  1993. that you will

  1994. never in your

  1995. life out

  1996. serve Jesus?

  1997. You will never

  1998. out serve him.

  1999. That he gives

  2000. far more to us

  2001. than we could

  2002. ever give back

  2003. to him.

  2004. Only when your

  2005. mind is blown

  2006. by that fact,

  2007. when your heart

  2008. is burning,

  2009. do we then

  2010. only learn

  2011. how to serve.

  2012. we serve our

  2013. fellow brothers

  2014. and sisters,

  2015. washing their

  2016. feet,

  2017. humbling ourselves,

  2018. taking the

  2019. lowliest of

  2020. positions.

  2021. Only then do

  2022. we serve like

  2023. lowly servant

  2024. slaves that the

  2025. world has never

  2026. seen before.

  2027. And the world

  2028. has certainly

  2029. never seen

  2030. anyone like

  2031. Jesus,

  2032. who serves

  2033. with his

  2034. words,

  2035. his very life,

  2036. and finally

  2037. with his hands

  2038. in this final

  2039. section.

  2040. Jesus and his

  2041. crew leave

  2042. Jericho,

  2043. which is the

  2044. final destination

  2045. of a typical

  2046. Galilean pilgrimage

  2047. to Jerusalem.

  2048. The narrative's

  2049. focus shifts

  2050. now to two

  2051. blind men.

  2052. They're sitting

  2053. by roadside,

  2054. presumably begging

  2055. for money.

  2056. It seems like

  2057. they're seasoned

  2058. in their craft,

  2059. for it seems

  2060. like this was a

  2061. strategic time

  2062. and place.

  2063. This was during

  2064. the week of

  2065. Passover,

  2066. when many would

  2067. be traveling to

  2068. Jerusalem,

  2069. Jerusalem,

  2070. and they felt

  2071. a particular

  2072. need to be

  2073. generous.

  2074. But once they

  2075. hear that Jesus

  2076. is coming,

  2077. they drop

  2078. everything and

  2079. they begin to

  2080. cry out,

  2081. Lord,

  2082. have mercy on

  2083. us,

  2084. Son of David.

  2085. Although Lord

  2086. could be a mere

  2087. formality,

  2088. a nicety like

  2089. sir or ma'am,

  2090. they undeniably

  2091. portray their

  2092. faith in the

  2093. Messiah by

  2094. calling him

  2095. Son of David.

  2096. Lord.

  2097. We've already

  2098. seen this

  2099. Christological

  2100. title in

  2101. Matthew already.

  2102. It's a loaded

  2103. label designated

  2104. that Jesus is

  2105. the long-awaited

  2106. Son to come

  2107. in the lineage

  2108. of David to

  2109. be the

  2110. messianic

  2111. king.

  2112. Although

  2113. physically blind,

  2114. they have the

  2115. spiritual eyes

  2116. to see that

  2117. Jesus really

  2118. is the king.

  2119. Maybe even

  2120. more than a

  2121. king.

  2122. For in the

  2123. Old Testament,

  2124. there is no

  2125. record of any

  2126. prophet or

  2127. servant restoring

  2128. the sight of

  2129. the blind.

  2130. In the Old

  2131. Testament, only

  2132. God restores the

  2133. sight of the

  2134. blind.

  2135. What is one of

  2136. Jesus' most

  2137. common miracles

  2138. in the

  2139. Gospels?

  2140. To give sight

  2141. to the blind.

  2142. The beggars

  2143. have genuine

  2144. faith to believe

  2145. Jesus can restore

  2146. their sight.

  2147. God restores the

  2148. world.

  2149. But this world

  2150. loves to snuff

  2151. out genuine

  2152. faith, loves to

  2153. prevent people from

  2154. coming to Jesus at

  2155. every opportunity.

  2156. You see it in

  2157. chapter 19 when the

  2158. disciples rebuke the

  2159. families who bring

  2160. their children.

2161. You see it in this

  2162. great crowd that

  2163. tells these blind

  2164. men to be quiet,

  2165. essentially to

  2166. shut up.

  2167. But notice how

  2168. resilient, how

  2169. gritty their

  2170. faith is.

  2171. I love this.

  2172. These two aren't

  2173. deterred by the

  2174. crowd.

  2175. They don't go on

  2176. the defensive.

  2177. They don't sulk.

  2178. Woe is me.

  2179. My life is already

  2180. so hard and now

2181. no one will let me

  2182. come to Jesus.

2183. No, they go on the

  2184. offensive.

  2185. They don't let

  2186. their circumstances

  2187. determine how they

  2188. respond.

  2189. They ignore the

  2190. crowd.

  2191. They cry out all

  2192. the more, Lord,

  2193. have mercy on us,

  2194. son of David.

  2195. So we too, when

  2196. Satan tries to

  2197. attack us,

  2198. discourage us from

  2199. coming to Jesus,

  2200. points to our

  2201. habitual sin, tells

  2202. us to be quiet,

  2203. tells us to shut

  2204. up.

  2205. What do we do

  2206. instead?

  2207. We yell, we cry

  2208. out, we are

  2209. desperate for Jesus

  2210. to come, all

  2211. the more.

  2212. And notice too,

  2213. their strategy

  2214. really isn't any

  2215. different.

  2216. There's no deceived

  2217. notion that they

  2218. can fancy up their

  2219. prayer, try to offer

  2220. anything Jesus needs.

  2221. They don't promise

  2222. any foolish vows.

  2223. It's just over and

  2224. over again, Lord,

  2225. have mercy on us.

  2226. Lord, have mercy on

  2227. us.

  2228. Lord, have mercy on

  2229. us.

  2230. D.O.

  2231. Moody once said,

  2232. some people think

  2233. that God doesn't

  2234. like to be troubled

  2235. with our constant

  2236. coming and asking.

  2237. The way to trouble

2238. God is not to come

  2239. at all.

  2240. In my prayer life,

  2241. as we've been

  2242. preaching through

  2243. Matthew, especially

  2244. on childlike faith,

  2245. I find myself

  2246. praying the same

  2247. simple, desperate

  2248. line over and over

  2249. and over again.

  2250. Please save my dad.

  2251. Please save my dad.

  2252. Please save my dad.

  2253. Please show me what

2254. to say in the sermon.

  2255. Please show me what

  2256. to say.

2257. Show me what to say.

  2258. I'm under no

  2259. pretense that God

  2260. will hear me because

  2261. of my many words,

  2262. but I still need

  2263. so much help.

2264. So I will repeat it

  2265. over and over

  2266. and over again,

  2267. and I will keep

  2268. repeating it over

  2269. and over and over

  2270. again until my God

  2271. answers me,

  2272. and he will.

  2273. And each one of

  2274. these is an irresistible

  2275. cry to the ever-serving

  2276. Jesus.

2277. Jesus has a soft spot

  2278. for people like me,

  2279. those who are weak,

  2280. unimpressive,

  2281. needy.

  2282. So despite needing

  2283. to go to Jerusalem,

  2284. having things to do,

  2285. he stops.

  2286. Again, showing that

  2287. the expectations of the

  2288. many have no say

  2289. over the compassion

  2290. of Jesus.

  2291. Jesus stops

  2292. to show that

  2293. the good of these

  2294. little ones

  2295. take precedent

  2296. over everything else

  2297. to him.

  2298. Do we stop?

  2299. Do we stop

  2300. our plans,

  2301. our agendas,

2302. to help those in need?

  2303. Then unlike the

  2304. corrupt tyrants

  2305. of this world

  2306. who won't even

  2307. lift up a finger

  2308. to serve their people,

  2309. but as the servant

  2310. king,

  2311. he asks him,

  2312. what do you want

2313. me to do for you?

  2314. This isn't the first

  2315. time he's asked

  2316. this question

  2317. in this passage.

  2318. Jesus asks both

  2319. the two sons

  2320. and the two beggars,

  2321. what do you want?

  2322. What do you want

2323. me to do for you?

  2324. One pair

  2325. seeks glory,

  2326. the other

  2327. seeks mercy.

  2328. One pair

  2329. wants to be

  2330. exalted,

  2331. the other pair

  2332. wants to be

  2333. rescued.

  2334. One pair

  2335. comes with

  2336. an inflated

  2337. view of self,

  2338. the other

  2339. comes knowing

  2340. exactly who

  2341. they are.

  2342. So Jesus

  2343. filled with

  2344. pity,

  2345. such a kind

  2346. Lord,

  2347. filled with pity,

  2348. with great

  2349. compassion,

  2350. his heart

  2351. welling up

  2352. with love.

  2353. He touches

  2354. the blind

  2355. men,

  2356. restores their

  2357. physical sight

  2358. immediately,

  2359. and as a result,

  2360. they follow

  2361. Jesus.

  2362. In our

  2363. desperate

  2364. state of need,

  2365. to each one

  2366. of us,

  2367. Jesus stops

  2368. to ask us

  2369. to,

  2370. what do you

  2371. want me to do

  2372. for you?

  2373. what do you

  2374. want me to

  2375. do for you?

  2376. It's a question

  2377. that exposes

  2378. our hearts.

  2379. Which pair

  2380. will you be

  2381. like?

  2382. When the

  2383. rest of the

  2384. world demands

  2385. to be first,

  2386. what will you

  2387. ask for?

  2388. When our

  2389. colleagues get

  2390. promoted above

  2391. us,

  2392. what will you

  2393. ask for?

  2394. When your

  2395. friends gain

  2396. more recognition

  2397. than you,

  2398. what will you

  2399. ask for?

  2400. In your

  2401. heart of

  2402. hearts,

  2403. what do you

  2404. want Jesus

  2405. to do for

  2406. you most?

  2407. So we,

  2408. like the

  2409. beggars,

  2410. who know

  2411. our desperate

  2412. state of need,

  2413. who know

  2414. that our

  2415. sin is the

  2416. greatest problem

  2417. far more than

  2418. anything else

  2419. in this world,

  2420. knowing exactly

  2421. who we are,

  2422. knowing exactly

  2423. our helpless

  2424. state,

  2425. we cry out,

  2426. Lord,

  2427. have mercy

  2428. on us.

  2429. Ransom us

  2430. from our

  2431. bondage of

  2432. sin and

  2433. death.

  2434. Lord,

  2435. have mercy

  2436. on us.

  2437. Then,

  2438. and only

  2439. then,

  2440. having received

  2441. that undeserved

  2442. mercy,

  2443. can we go

  2444. through life

  2445. serving others,

  2446. asking them

  2447. to,

  2448. what do you

  2449. want me to

  2450. do for you?

  2451. Let's pray.

  2452. Amen.

  2453. Father,

  2454. we pray

  2455. that you

  2456. would transform

  2457. us to be

  2458. more and

  2459. more like

  2460. your son,

  2461. that we

  2462. would serve

  2463. with everything

  2464. we have.

  2465. We know

  2466. that it's

  2467. not much.

  2468. And I

  2469. pray for

  2470. those who

  2471. are struggling

  2472. now,

  2473. who feel

  2474. like,

  2475. who just

  2476. feel so

  2477. discouraged

  2478. by what

  2479. they can

  2480. offer so

  2481. little.

  2482. Help them

  2483. to know

  2484. that you

  2485. are pleased

  2486. with how

  2487. much they

  2488. can serve,

  2489. about what

  2490. they can

  2491. offer.

  2492. Empower

  2493. us to

  2494. serve,

  2495. not by

  2496. our own

  2497. strength,

  2498. not by

  2499. looking within

  2500. ourselves,

  2501. but to

  2502. see just

  2503. how far

  2504. Jesus

  2505. condescended

  2506. to serve

  2507. people like

  2508. us,

  2509. so that we

  2510. can then

  2511. go wash

  2512. the feet

  2513. of others,

  2514. forgive

  2515. others,

  2516. encourage

  2517. others,

  2518. be rejoicing

  2519. when other

  2520. people get

  2521. past us

  2522. and get

  2523. promoted

  2524. above us,

  2525. that we

  2526. would love

  2527. in that way,

  2528. we would

  2529. rejoice in

  2530. that way,

  2531. that you

  2532. would help

  2533. us to

  2534. stop the

  2535. endless cycle

  2536. of competition

  2537. and envy,

  2538. stop that

  2539. in our

  2540. own

  2541. church,

  2542. and we

  2543. would

  2544. serve,

  2545. serve like

  2546. you,

  2547. Lord.

  2548. In Jesus'

  2549. name we

  2550. pray,

  2551. amen.
