  1. It's great to worship with you all.

  2. It's Palm Sunday today

  3. and one of the pastors of Trinity Cambridge Church

  4. and it's my great joy

  5. and honor

  6. to serve King Jesus

  7. and preach his word

  8. this morning.

  9. Matthew 21, 1-17.

  10. Let me pray

  11. for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  12. God, you are the God of light and glory.

  13. God, your brilliance exposes all our sins.

  14. But Lord, also strangely,

  15. your light also warmly invites us,

  16. sinners, to come

  17. to be forgiven,

  18. to be received.

  19. So Lord,

  20. reveal yourself this morning to your people.

  21. Exalt your son, Jesus Christ,

  22. that we might behold his majesty

  23. and his meekness

  24. and that in our encounter with him

  25. and in our faith in him

  26. and union with him

  27. might be transformed

  28. from one degree of glory to another

  29. into the likeness of your son, Jesus Christ.

  30. Help us to behold him today.

  31. In Jesus' name we pray.

  32. Amen.

  33. Please stand if you are able

  34. so that we can honor God together

  35. as we read from his word.

  36. Matthew 21, verses 1-17.

    Matthew 21:1–17

  37. Now when they drew near to Jerusalem

  38. and came to Bethphage,

  39. to the Mount of Olives,

  40. then Jesus sent two disciples,

  41. saying to them,

  42. go into the village in front of you

  43. and immediately you will find

  44. a donkey tied and a colt with her.

  45. Untie them and bring them to me.

  46. If anyone says anything to you,

  47. you shall say,

  48. the Lord needs them.

  49. And he will send them at once.

  50. This took place to fulfill

  51. what was spoken by the prophet,

  52. saying,

  53. say to the daughter of Zion,

  54. behold, your king is coming to you,

  55. humble and mounted on a donkey,

  56. on a colt,

  57. the foal of a beast of burden.

  58. The disciples went and did

  59. as Jesus had directed them.

  60. They brought the donkey and the colt

  61. and put on them their cloaks,

  62. and he sat on them.

  63. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks

  64. on the road,

  65. and others cut branches from the trees

  66. and spread them on the road.

  67. And the crowds that went before him

  68. and that followed him

  69. were shouting,

  70. Hosanna to the son of David.

  71. Blessed is he who comes

  72. in the name of the Lord.

  73. Hosanna in the highest.

  74. And when he entered Jerusalem,

  75. the whole city was stirred up,

  76. saying,

  77. who is this?

  78. And the crowd said,

  79. this is the prophet Jesus

  80. from Nazareth of Galilee.

  81. And Jesus entered the temple

  82. and drove out all who sold

  83. and bought in the temple.

  84. And he overturned the tables

  85. of the money changers

  86. and the seats of those

  87. who sold pigeons.

  88. He said to them,

  89. it is written,

  90. my house shall be called

  91. a house of prayer,

  92. but you make it a den of robbers.

  93. And the blind and the lame

  94. came to him in the temple

  95. and he healed them.

  96. But when the chief priests

  97. and the scribes saw

  98. the wonderful things that he did

  99. and the children crying out

  100. in the temple,

  101. Hosanna to the son of David,

  102. they were indignant.

  103. And they said to him,

  104. do you hear what these are saying?

  105. And Jesus said to them,

  106. yes.

  107. Have you never read?

  108. Out of the mouth of infants

  109. and nursing babies

  110. you have prepared praise.

  111. And leaving them,

  112. he went out of the city

  113. to Bethany

  114. and lodged there.

  115. This is God's holy

  116. and authoritative word.

  117. You may be seated.

  118. In his defense of Christianity

  119. entitled Pense,

  120. which simply means

  121. thoughts in French,

  122. the 17th century

  123. mathematician and philosopher

  124. Blaise Pascal

  125. wrote this,

  126. I do not admire

  127. the excess of a virtue

  128. as of courage,

  129. except I see

  130. at the same time

  131. the excess

  132. of the opposite virtue

  133. as an Epaminondas

  134. who had extreme courage

  135. and extreme benignity.

  136. For otherwise,

  137. it is not to rise,

  138. it is to fall.

  139. One does not show

  140. his greatness

  141. by being at one extremity,

  142. but rather

  143. by touching both at once

  144. and filling

  145. all the intermediate space.

  146. Pascal uses Epaminondas,

  147. a 4th century B.C.

  148. Greek general

  149. and statesman,

  150. as an example

  151. of a person

  152. who had both

  153. extreme courage

  154. and extreme gentleness

  155. and kindness.

  156. Extreme courage

  157. on the battlefield,

  158. but extreme kindness

  159. and gentleness

  160. in his private life.

  161. A person who only

  162. possesses extreme courage,

  163. Pascal considered

  164. a brute.

  165. a person who only

  166. possesses extreme gentleness,

  167. Pascal considered

  168. a weakling.

  169. Unfortunately,

  170. it is common

  171. for Christians

  172. to see Jesus

  173. as either

  174. of these two extremes.

  175. Some see him

  176. predominantly

  177. in his kindness

  178. and gentleness

  179. and meekness.

  180. This is the

  181. saccharine,

  182. sentimental Jesus,

  183. the gentle Jesus,

  184. meek and mild.

  185. others see Jesus

  186. predominantly

  187. in his majesty

  188. and fiery holiness.

  189. The Revelation 19

  190. Jesus

  191. with eyes

  192. like flames

  193. of fire

  194. and a sharp

  195. double-edged sword

  196. coming out of his mouth

  197. to strike down

  198. the nations.

  199. Of course,

  200. neither side

  201. will openly

  202. acknowledge

  203. that they have

  204. this one-dimensional

  205. view of Jesus,

  206. but if you listen

  207. to the way

  208. they talk

  209. and the way

  210. they deal

  211. with sinners,

  212. you can tell

  213. that they

  214. functionally

  215. have a one-dimensional

  216. Jesus.

  217. Referencing

  218. this Pascal quote

  219. that I just cited,

  220. C.S. Lewis,

  221. Oxford professor

  222. and theologian,

  223. once wrote

  224. in a letter

  225. in 1959,

  226. gentle Jesus,

  227. my elbow.

  228. he's a Christian,

  229. you know,

  230. he can,

  231. yeah.

  232. Gentle Jesus,

  233. my elbow,

  234. the most striking

  235. thing about our Lord

  236. is the union

  237. of great ferocity

  238. with extreme tenderness.

  239. Remember Pascal,

  240. I'll skip the quote

  241. since I read it already,

  242. add to this

  243. that he is also

  244. a supreme

  245. ironist,

  246. dialectician,

  247. and occasionally

  248. humorist,

  249. so go on.

  250. You are on the

  251. right track now,

  252. getting to the real

  253. man behind all

  254. the plaster dolls

  255. that have been

  256. substituted for him.

  257. This is the

  258. appearance in human

  259. form of the God

  260. who made the tiger

  261. and the lamb,

  262. the avalanche

  263. and the rose.

  264. He'll frighten

  265. and puzzle you,

  266. but the real Christ

  267. can be loved

  268. and admired

  269. as the doll

  270. cannot be.

  271. This is the real

  272. Christ that we see

  273. this morning

  274. in our passage.

  275. The two dramatic

  276. scenes as Jesus

  277. enters Jerusalem

  278. and as he cleanses

  279. the temple

  280. show that Jesus

  281. perfectly combines

  282. these two extremes.

  283. Jesus is

  284. the majestic

  285. and yet meek

  286. Messiah

  287. who reigns

  288. over the blind

  289. and the lame.

  290. So we're going to

  291. look at those two

  292. attributes of Christ

  293. in turn.

  294. First, his majesty,

  295. the majesty of the king,

  296. and secondly,

  297. the meekness

  298. of the king.

  299. Let's first talk

  300. about the majesty

  301. of the king.

  302. In a few months,

  303. 300,000 to 500,000

  304. people will descend

  305. upon the Charles River

  306. Esplanade

  307. for Independence Day.

  308. Boston is called

  309. the Cradle of Liberty

  310. because of its pivotal role

  311. in the American Revolution,

  312. so it's no surprise

  313. that we attract

  314. one of the largest crowds

  315. for Fourth of July

  316. celebrations

  317. in the country.

  318. The scene is similar

  319. to that Fourth of July

  320. scene in Matthew 21.

  321. Jesus is here

  322. entering Jerusalem

  323. on the week of Passover.

  324. Jerusalem's normal

  325. population around this time

  326. would have been

  327. around 30,000,

  328. but during Passover,

  329. which was the most

  330. celebrated

  331. and eagerly anticipated

  332. festival

  333. that was observed

  334. by all Jews,

  335. the number of people

  336. in Jerusalem

  337. swelled to around

  338. 200,000 pilgrims

  339. from all over

  340. the Middle East

  341. in the Mediterranean region

  342. flocking to Jerusalem

  343. to celebrate this Passover.

  344. Jerusalem proper

  345. could not accommodate

  346. all these people,

  347. and so tens of thousands

  348. of people would pitch tents

  349. all around

  350. and camp around the city.

  351. That's why later

  352. in verse 17,

  353. it says that Jesus

  354. went out of the city

  355. of Jerusalem

  356. to Bethany

  357. and lodged there.

  358. There is simply no room

  359. in the city itself.

  360. And remember also

  361. that the Passover,

  362. which the Jews

  363. had been celebrating

  364. for over 1,400 years

  365. by this time,

  366. it was a celebration

  367. of God's deliverance

  368. of Israel,

  369. his people,

  370. from their slavery

  371. in Egypt.

  372. It's pretty much

  373. the Jewish equivalent

  374. of Independence Day,

  375. except that they

  376. weren't independent anymore.

  377. They were occupied

  378. and oppressed

  379. by the Romans,

  380. and they had been waiting

  381. for God to send

  382. another deliverer

  383. like Moses,

  384. another deliverer

  385. like King David

  386. to free them

  387. from this rule.

  388. So imagine if

  389. in the unlikely event

  390. that we,

  391. the United States

  392. of America,

  393. were to be colonized

  394. by another country

  395. in the near future,

  396. and that we continue

  397. to celebrate

  398. Independence Day,

  399. right under the noses

  400. of our occupiers.

  401. Can you see why

  402. that would be subversive?

  403. Why that would make

  404. the Roman rulers

  405. nervous?

  406. Imagine this scene

  407. in the first century

  408. Jerusalem.

  409. A Jewish family

  410. gathers around

  411. the hearth at night,

  412. and they're eating

  413. the Passover meal,

  414. and the kid asks,

  415. Dad, what does

  416. the Passover mean?

  417. Oh, I thought

  418. you would never ask.

  419. Long time ago,

  420. we were oppressed

  421. by these Egyptian rulers.

  422. They were violent

  423. and ruthless.

  424. Sorry, no offense

  425. to our Egyptian brothers here.

  426. You have been saved

  427. by the blood of the Lamb.

  428. Amen.

  429. Yeah.

  430. Not unlike

  431. the Romans today.

  432. Pharaoh even ordered

  433. the newborn Jewish boys

  434. to be killed,

  435. but one survived.

  436. His name was Moses.

  437. And God,

  438. through Moses,

  439. struck Egypt down

  440. with ten plagues

  441. or ten disasters.

  442. And the final one

  443. was when he struck down

  444. all the firstborn

  445. males of Egypt.

  446. But because

  447. of the blood

  448. of the Lamb

  449. upon our doorposts,

  450. the destroyer

  451. passed over us,

  452. spared us,

  453. and in doing that,

  454. God delivered us

  455. out of the hand

  456. of Egypt,

  457. and he can do it again.

  458. He will do it again.

  459. The scriptures prophesy

  460. of a son of David

  461. who will come,

  462. a Messiah,

  463. a king,

  464. who will restore

  465. his kingdom

  466. to all its glory.

  467. So,

  468. this is the Passover.

  469. It's pregnant

  470. with nationalistic,

  471. patriotic fervor.

  472. And this is why

  473. Pontius Pilate,

  474. the Roman governor

  475. of Judea,

  476. is in Jerusalem

  477. during this time

  478. as we find out

  479. later in Matthew 27.

  480. Normally,

  481. he resided in Caesarea,

  482. which is modern-day

  483. Tel Aviv,

  484. but he came to Jerusalem

  485. for the Passover

  486. because he needs

  487. to keep order

  488. in case a riot breaks out.

  489. He needs to maintain control.

  490. That's the mood.

  491. remember this mood

  492. as we enter

  493. into this scene

  494. in verse 1.

  495. Now,

  496. when they drew near

  497. to Jerusalem

  498. and came to Bethphage,

  499. to the Mount of Olives,

  500. then Jesus sent

  501. two disciples.

  502. Each of these three locations

  503. is theologically significant.

  504. I don't have time

  505. to get into them all,

  506. but the political leaders

  507. that are around the world

  508. in our country

  509. often have to be mindful

  510. of the symbolic implications

  511. of their actions,

  512. including where they hold

  513. their rallies,

  514. where they announce

  515. their campaigns,

  516. what song they play

  517. as their campaign

  518. is announced

  519. and they come onto the stage.

  520. Ronald Reagan

  521. launched his general election

  522. campaign in 1980

  523. in front of the Statue of Liberty,

  524. positioning himself

  525. as the keeper

  526. of the flame of liberty.

  527. Barack Obama

  528. announced his candidacy

  529. in Springfield, Illinois,

  530. indicating that he is

  531. from the heartland,

  532. from the land of Lincoln,

  533. and that he too

  534. is a historic figure

  535. like Lincoln.

  536. In a similar way,

  537. Jesus has very deliberately

  538. chosen the Mount of Olives

  539. as the location

  540. from which he will descend

  541. into Jerusalem.

  542. Because it was prophesied

  543. in Zechariah 14, 4-5

  544. that the Messiah,

  545. the promised king

  546. and deliverer

  547. of God's people,

  548. the representative

  549. of Yahweh,

  550. would come to Jerusalem

  551. and stand on Mount of Olives

  552. and that he would fight

  553. the decisive battles

  554. against the enemies of God

  555. and deliver them.

  556. So Mount of Olives

  557. is the beginning point

  558. of Jesus' inaugural parade.

  559. Jesus is not being shy

  560. about his royal status.

  561. Not only that,

  562. Matthew intentionally

  563. builds suspense

  564. by repeated use

  565. of the verb

  566. draw near

  567. in his book.

  568. It says in verse 1

  569. that Jesus and his followers

  570. drew near to Jerusalem

  571. and Matthew

  572. has used that verb

  573. only three times

  574. up to this point

  575. in the gospel

  576. and every single time

  577. is to say

  578. that the kingdom of heaven

  579. is near.

  580. Jesus and his disciples

  581. drawing near to Jerusalem

  582. is bringing the kingdom

  583. of heaven near.

  584. Here is the king

  585. that was promised.

  586. Here is the king

  587. that brings the kingdom

  588. of God

  589. to bear upon this earth.

  590. As Matthew 5.35 said,

  591. Jerusalem is the city

  592. of the great king,

  593. the city of David

  594. and here comes

  595. the son of David

  596. standing atop Mount of Olives

  597. of all places

  598. surveying Jerusalem

  599. and about to enter.

  600. What else can all of this mean?

  601. It's about to go down.

  602. From there,

  603. Jesus sends two of his disciples

  604. on a mission

  605. in verses 2-3

  606. saying to them,

  607. go into the village

  608. in front of you

  609. and immediately you will find

  610. a donkey tied

  611. and a colt with her.

  612. Untie them

  613. and bring them to me.

  614. If anyone says anything to you

  615. you shall say

  616. the Lord needs them

  617. and he will send them

  618. at once.

  619. Jesus here displays

  620. supernatural knowledge

  621. and sovereign control

  622. of his environment

  623. in his instruction

  624. to the disciples

  625. to secure a colt

  626. for him to ride on.

  627. A colt is a young male donkey.

  628. Usually,

  629. people waited

  630. until the donkeys

  631. were fully grown

  632. to ride them

  633. and the significance

  634. of the colt

  635. is that it is

  636. a brand new

  637. unused

  638. unadulterated donkey

  639. that no one else

  640. has ever ridden on.

  641. That point

  642. is made explicit

  643. in the parallel account

  644. of this triumphal entry

  645. in Luke 19.30

  646. which says

  647. that this is a colt

  648. on which no one

  649. has ever yet sat.

  650. Several Old Testament passages

  651. speak of the importance

  652. of bringing an animal

  653. for sacrifice

  654. to God

  655. that has never been worked

  656. and has never worn

  657. a yoke.

  658. Numbers 19,

  659. Deuteronomy 21.

  660. So this colt

  661. represents purity

  662. that is fit for God.

  663. Fit for a king.

  664. I've never owned

  665. a brand new car

  666. ever in my life.

  667. It's not because

  668. used cars are better.

  669. It's because

  670. used cars are cheaper.

  671. Right?

  672. A new car

  673. loses 10%

  674. of its value

  675. as soon as it is

  676. driven off the lot.

  677. 10%.

  678. And by the end

  679. of that first year,

  680. even if the car

  681. is in great condition,

  682. it will lose

  683. up to 20%

  684. to 30%

  685. of its value.

  686. And how does that

  687. make sense?

  688. Right?

  689. A one-year-old car,

  690. I've never even

  691. dreamed of

  692. in a one-year-old car

  693. before.

  694. A one-year-old car

  695. is pretty much

  696. brand spanking new.

  697. Like you don't have

  698. to do any major repairs

  699. for years to come.

  700. Right?

  701. That's a great car.

  702. How in the world

  703. is a one-year-old car

  704. lose,

  705. does it lose

  706. 30%

  707. of its value?

  708. How can a car

  709. that was literally

  710. just driven off

  711. the lot

  712. that has five miles

  713. on the odometer

  714. lose 10%

  715. of the car's value?

  716. It doesn't make

  717. any sense,

  718. right?

  719. That's why used

  720. cars are good value.

  721. Right?

  722. An article published

  723. in the Journal of Product

  724. and Brand Management

  725. 2025

  726. observes

  727. what all of us

  728. intuitively know,

  729. namely that

  730. with any kind

  731. of used product,

  732. there is this

  733. perceived

  734. contamination.

  735. It's no longer

  736. pristine and perfect.

  737. Yes,

  738. the car only has

  739. five miles

  740. on the odometer,

  741. but someone else

  742. put that five miles

  743. on that car.

  744. It's not fully mine.

  745. It's no longer

  746. solely mine.

  747. It's not pure anymore.

  748. Of course,

  749. if I'm getting

  750. a car for myself,

  751. I'm going to get

  752. a good value used car.

  753. Thank you very much.

  754. But if I'm getting

  755. a car

  756. for the king

  757. of kings,

  758. I'm not getting

  759. a used car.

  760. As if

  761. he's no better

  762. than that guy

  763. who rode in that car

  764. earlier on?

  765. Absolutely not.

  766. Brand new,

  767. unused,

  768. pure,

  769. and pristine.

  770. Because the king

  771. of kings

  772. cannot ride

  773. on anything

  774. that's less

  775. than perfect.

  776. So he rides

  777. on the colt

  778. on which no one

  779. else has ever sat.

  780. And an unbroken

  781. colt was usually

  782. introduced into service

  783. in the presence

  784. of its mother,

  785. lest it become

  786. nervous and jumpy.

  787. The mother's presence

  788. would keep the colt

  789. peaceful and calm.

  790. And so that's why

  791. the disciples

  792. instructed to bring

  793. both the mother

  794. and the colt,

  795. the donkey

  796. and the colt.

  797. As they acquire

  798. the donkey

  799. and the colt,

  800. if anyone objects

  801. to this,

  802. them untying

  803. this donkey

  804. that doesn't

  805. belong to them

  806. and bringing

  807. it to Jesus,

  808. they are not

  809. instructed to

  810. apologize profusely

  811. and then beg

  812. for their pardon.

  813. Instead,

  814. they're simply told

  815. to tell the owner,

  816. the Lord needs

  817. them.

  818. The Lord

  819. is an exalted

  820. title often used

  821. throughout the

  822. Gospel of Matthew

  823. to refer to Yahweh,

  824. to God himself.

  825. And the first time

  826. Jesus applied that

  827. title to himself

  828. was in Matthew 7

  829. when he described

  830. himself as the

  831. supreme Lord

  832. and judge of all

  833. creation who will

  834. be sitting in the

  835. judgment seat on

  836. judgment day,

  837. at the end of the

  838. days.

  839. So this is an

  840. extraordinary claim.

  841. The Lord needs

  842. them.

  843. And that is reason

  844. enough.

  845. In the ancient

  846. world, it was

  847. understood that a

  848. king had the

  849. authority and the

  850. right to impress

  851. the property of his

  852. subjects into his

  853. own service.

  854. We have something

  855. similar in our own

  856. context.

  857. We call it eminent

  858. domain, which gives

  859. the government the

  860. power to take private

  861. property and convert it

  862. into public use, as

  863. long as they provide

  864. fair compensation for

  865. it.

  866. If you have any

  867. questions about that,

  868. you can talk to Josh

  869. Granbo.

  870. He told me all about

  871. it last year.

  872. Similarly, Jesus

  873. impresses into his

  874. personal service the

  875. property of one of his

  876. subjects, which he

  877. has every right to do

  878. as the messianic

  879. king.

  880. So the disciples went

  881. and did as they were

  882. instructed, and they

  883. brought the donkey and

  884. the colt.

  885. So this is a command

  886. fulfillment formula in

  887. the Bible.

  888. It's highlighting Jesus

  889. as kingly authority.

  890. And just think about it

  891. for a minute.

  892. Can I get two

  893. volunteers?

  894. Just two volunteers?

  895. Okay.

  896. Shall we?

  897. One more?

  898. Okay.

  899. David.

  900. Can you go to knock

  901. on the third house on

  902. Windsor Street?

  903. And then tell them,

  904. ask them for the key to

  905. the car that's parked

  906. in front.

  907. And if they say

  908. anything about it,

  909. then just tell them

  910. the pastor has need

  911. of it.

  912. Right?

  913. Yeah.

  914. Yeah.

  915. Why aren't you guys

  916. going?

  917. Yeah.

  918. Yeah.

  919. You see, they don't

  920. take me seriously

  921. enough.

  922. You see?

  923. Yeah.

  924. And rightly so.

  925. Imagine what would

  926. happen.

  927. Not only is my

  928. information inaccurate,

  929. I don't even know

  930. where the house,

  931. third house would be.

  932. But no one would

  933. hand over the key

  934. to their car.

  935. And that's why you

  936. guys aren't going.

  937. The reason, of course,

  938. is simple.

  939. I don't have that

  940. kind of authority.

  941. But King Jesus does.

  942. And then in verses

  943. four to five,

  944. Matthew tells us

  945. what the donkey

  946. is four.

  947. This took place

  948. to fulfill what was

  949. spoken by the prophet

  950. saying,

  951. say to the daughter

  952. of Zion,

  953. behold,

  954. your king is coming

  955. to you,

  956. humble and mounted

  957. on a donkey,

  958. on a colt,

  959. the foal of a beast

  960. of burden.

  961. The first phrase,

  962. say to the daughter

  963. of Zion,

  964. echoes Isaiah 61,

  965. 11 to 12,

  966. which is a prophecy

  967. of how the Lord

  968. himself will bring

  969. salvation to his

  970. people.

  971. But most of the

  972. citation in verse

  973. five is from

  974. Zechariah 9,

  975. which we read for

  976. our call to worship

  977. this morning.

  978. Rejoice greatly,

  979. O daughter of Zion.

  980. Shout aloud,

  981. O daughter of Jerusalem.

  982. Behold,

  983. your king is coming

  984. to you.

  985. Righteous and having

  986. salvation is he,

  987. humble and mounted

  988. on a donkey,

  989. on a colt,

  990. the foal of a donkey.

  991. It's a prophecy

  992. concerning the

  993. messianic king,

  994. and amazingly,

  995. it predicts that

  996. the king will arrive

  997. on a donkey,

  998. on a colt,

  999. the foal of a donkey.

  1000. So Jesus is saying,

  1001. here I am.

  1002. I am the messianic

  1003. king who fulfills

  1004. this prophecy.

  1005. I am the messiah

  1006. that you have been

  1007. waiting for.

1008. This is the only time

  1009. in the gospels

  1010. that Jesus ever

  1011. rides on anything.

  1012. He's always walking

  1013. all over the gospels,

  1014. always walking

  1015. with his disciples.

  1016. Moreover,

  1017. according to Jewish

  1018. oral commentary

  1019. on Leviticus

  1020. and Deuteronomy,

  1021. Jews were specifically

  1022. instructed and expected

  1023. to arrive in Jerusalem

  1024. as pilgrims for Passover

  1025. on foot.

  1026. So why does Jesus

  1027. decide to ride

  1028. on a donkey

  1029. on this last mile

  1030. into Jerusalem?

  1031. There is a widespread

  1032. misunderstanding

1033. that I try to expose

  1034. every Palm Sunday

  1035. when I preach,

1036. that riding on a donkey

  1037. is a lowly,

  1038. humble thing,

  1039. something that's reserved

  1040. for common farming folk.

  1041. But that's not true.

  1042. In fact,

  1043. riding a donkey

1044. is a sign of royalty.

1045. To give you some examples,

  1046. Judges 10, 3-4,

1047. it says that Jair of Gilead,

  1048. a judge of Israel

  1049. for 22 years,

  1050. had 30 sons

  1051. who rode 30 donkeys

  1052. and controlled

  1053. 30 towns in Gilead.

  1054. Riding a donkey

  1055. signifies rulership,

  1056. kingship.

  1057. Similarly,

  1058. in 1 Kings 1,

  1059. 33-34,

  1060. when King David

  1061. commands Zadok the priest

  1062. and Nathan the prophet

  1063. to announce that Solomon

  1064. is his chosen heir

  1065. to reign after him.

1066. What does he tell him

  1067. to do?

  1068. He tells him

  1069. to take his donkey

1070. and put Solomon on it

  1071. and parade him

  1072. around the city,

1073. announcing that he is king.

  1074. Finally,

  1075. there's a letter

  1076. that archaeologists

  1077. found in the ancient

  1078. Near East,

  1079. in Mari,

  1080. an ancient Sumerian city

  1081. around 1760 BC,

  1082. where a royal advisor

  1083. counsels his king

  1084. this way.

  1085. Verily,

  1086. you are the king

  1087. of the Haneans,

  1088. but secondly,

  1089. you are the king

  1090. of the Acadians.

  1091. My lord should not

  1092. ride a horse.

  1093. Let my lord ride

  1094. in a chariot

  1095. or on a mule,

  1096. and he will thereby

  1097. honor his royal head.

  1098. A military general

  1099. seeking to conquer

  1100. a city that doesn't

  1101. belong to him

  1102. gallops in

  1103. on a stallion,

  1104. but a king

  1105. who owns it all

  1106. rides in

  1107. on a donkey.

  1108. No wonder,

1109. it says in verse 10,

  1110. that the whole city

  1111. was stirred up

  1112. by Jesus' entry

  1113. into Jerusalem.

  1114. He's a talk

  1115. of the entire town.

  1116. Who is this?

  1117. The word stirred

  1118. is the same word

  1119. used to describe

  1120. how the earth

  1121. shook in Matthew 27, 51.

  1122. The whole city

  1123. is agitated,

  1124. shaken,

  1125. thrown into commotion,

  1126. that there's someone

  1127. who is claiming

1128. to be the son of David,

  1129. the king,

  1130. the Messiah,

  1131. riding on a donkey

  1132. and coming in

  1133. to Jerusalem.

  1134. And in verse 7,

  1135. the disciples

  1136. put their cloaks

  1137. on the colt

  1138. and for Jesus

  1139. to sit on,

  1140. and in verse 8,

  1141. the crowd spread

  1142. their cloaks

  1143. on the road

  1144. and cut branches

  1145. from the trees

  1146. and laid them

  1147. down on the road.

  1148. What are they doing?

  1149. Spreading garments

  1150. on the ground

  1151. so that a person

1152. does not have to walk

  1153. on the bare earth

  1154. is a gesture

  1155. of honor

  1156. and respect.

  1157. It's similar

  1158. to our practice

  1159. of rolling out

  1160. the red carpet

  1161. for presidents

  1162. and heads of state

  1163. that come to visit

  1164. on special occasions.

  1165. Jesus,

  1166. you are too holy,

  1167. too worthy

  1168. to sit

  1169. on the donkey's

  1170. bare back.

  1171. So here's a cloak.

  1172. Jesus,

  1173. you're too glorious

  1174. and majestic

  1175. to set your feet

  1176. on this bare earth.

  1177. Here,

  1178. let me soil

  1179. my cloak instead.

  1180. Here,

  1181. take it.

  1182. Let your donkey

  1183. trot on it

  1184. because that's

  1185. how worthy you are.

  1186. That's how glorious

  1187. you are.

  1188. That's the idea.

  1189. That's the majesty

  1190. of the Messiah.

  1191. And imagine

  1192. what an awe-inspiring

1193. sight that would have been

  1194. to see Jesus

  1195. riding down

  1196. from Mount of Olives

  1197. on a donkey.

  1198. Remember,

  1199. there are hundreds

  1200. of thousands

  1201. of pilgrims

  1202. in and all

  1203. around Jerusalem.

  1204. Remember,

  1205. there are hundreds

  1206. of thousands

  1207. of all of them

  1208. on foot

  1209. all of a sudden

  1210. amidst a sea

  1211. of people.

  1212. You see Jesus

  1213. rise above them all.

  1214. amidst a sea

  1215. of pedestrians,

  1216. you see one man

  1217. click, click, click, click,

  1218. riding in

  1219. on a donkey.

  1220. And everybody's heads

  1221. are turning.

  1222. Who is this?

  1223. It's glorious.

1224. Jesus is not being demure

  1225. about his kingship.

1226. He's putting the entire city

  1227. on notice

  1228. and inviting everybody

  1229. who sees

  1230. to draw

  1231. the inevitable

  1232. and appropriate

  1233. conclusion.

  1234. That's why the crowd's

  1235. acclamation in verse 9

  1236. is particularly

  1237. fitting.

  1238. Hosanna to the son

  1239. of David.

1240. Blessed is he who comes

1241. in the name of the Lord.

  1242. Hosanna in the highest.

  1243. The title

  1244. son of David

  1245. is the traditional title

1246. given for the Jewish Messiah

  1247. who is expected

  1248. to be a descendant

  1249. of King David.

  1250. And throughout his ministry

  1251. up to this point,

  1252. many times

  1253. Jesus has been called

  1254. the son of David.

  1255. But he has been

  1256. very guarded

  1257. about his

  1258. messianic identity.

  1259. Some people call this

  1260. the messianic secret

  1261. in the gospels.

  1262. But at this point

  1263. in the narrative,

  1264. as he is headed

  1265. to the cross

  1266. in Jerusalem,

  1267. all reticence

1268. has gone out the window.

  1269. Now is the time

  1270. for the revealing

  1271. of the messianic king.

  1272. Now is the time

  1273. for Jesus' enthronement.

  1274. And so the crowds

  1275. cry out,

  1276. Hosanna,

  1277. which is taken

  1278. from Psalm 118,

  1279. 25 to 26.

  1280. It's a combination

  1281. of two Hebrew words.

  1282. One that means

  1283. to save

  1284. and another one

  1285. that means

  1286. to please,

  1287. please.

  1288. So it means together,

  1289. please save us.

1290. It says in Psalm 118,

  1291. 15,

  1292. save us,

  1293. we pray,

  1294. oh Lord.

  1295. We are downtrodden

  1296. and defeated.

  1297. We are poor

  1298. and needy.

  1299. Save us,

  1300. Lord God.

  1301. We need you.

  1302. King,

  1303. come and deliver us.

  1304. That's the cry.

  1305. The cry

  1306. that the Old Testament

  1307. saints cried out

  1308. to the Lord God

  1309. himself.

  1310. Now these crowds

  1311. are crying out

  1312. to Jesus.

  1313. it's a significant

  1314. claim.

  1315. Later on

  1316. in verse 15,

  1317. the children

  1318. in the temple

  1319. also cry out

  1320. Hosanna to the

  1321. son of David

  1322. and the chief priests

  1323. and the scribes

  1324. probably at first

  1325. are just laughing

  1326. in disbelief.

  1327. Look at these

  1328. cute,

  1329. ignorant children

  1330. calling this man

  1331. the son of David.

  1332. It looks like

  1333. their parents,

  1334. Messiah fever

  1335. got to them also.

  1336. Maybe they expect

  1337. Jesus to tempt down

  1338. this misguided fervor

  1339. but Jesus doesn't

  1340. do that.

  1341. He accepts

  1342. their acclamation

1343. as the son of David,

  1344. Yahweh's king.

  1345. And when they realize

  1346. that that's what

1347. Jesus is in fact doing,

1348. he says the chief priests

  1349. and the scribes

  1350. became indignant

  1351. in verse 16.

  1352. Do you hear

  1353. what these are saying?

  1354. I mean,

  1355. you can't be

  1356. that brazen

  1357. and self-important,

  1358. can you?

  1359. They're saying

  1360. that you are

  1361. the coming

  1362. Davidic king.

  1363. They're saying

  1364. that you are

  1365. the Messiah.

  1366. Please,

  1367. disabuse the masses

  1368. of their ignorance.

  1369. Tell them

  1370. that they've got

  1371. the wrong guy

  1372. right now.

  1373. But Jesus responds

  1374. in verse 16,

  1375. yes.

  1376. Yes.

  1377. I hear what

  1378. they're saying.

  1379. Yes.

  1380. I accept it.

  1381. Jesus continues

  1382. in verse 16.

  1383. Have you never read

  1384. out of the mouth

  1385. of infants

  1386. and nursing babies

  1387. you have prepared

  1388. praise?

  1389. I'll talk more

1390. about this a little later

  1391. but Jesus is quoting

  1392. from Psalm 8 verse 2

    Psalms 8:2

  1393. which is about

  1394. how infants

  1395. and babies

  1396. praise God.

  1397. and shockingly

  1398. again,

  1399. Jesus applies

  1400. this praise

  1401. that is given

  1402. to God

  1403. to himself.

  1404. Yes,

  1405. Psalm 8

  1406. was about me.

  1407. Yes,

  1408. it applies

  1409. to me.

  1410. I am the son

  1411. of David

  1412. and even more

  1413. than that,

  1414. I am the son

  1415. of God.

  1416. So the crowds

  1417. are right to cry

  1418. out,

  1419. Hosanna in the highest

  1420. because I am

  1421. of the most

  1422. high God.

  1423. And then after

  1424. saying that,

  1425. Jesus leaves

  1426. the chief priests

  1427. and the scribes

  1428. to pick up

  1429. their jaws

  1430. off the floor

  1431. and then he

  1432. leaves the city.

  1433. This is the

  1434. majesty

  1435. of our king.

  1436. Do you think

  1437. some Christians

  1438. are a little

  1439. too devoted?

  1440. A little

  1441. fanatic

  1442. maybe?

  1443. Hyperbolic

  1444. and overly

  1445. lavish?

  1446. In their praise

  1447. of Jesus,

  1448. think again.

  1449. No praise

  1450. is high enough.

  1451. No shout

  1452. is loud enough.

  1453. No words

  1454. are strong enough.

  1455. No life

  1456. is long enough

  1457. to praise

  1458. our savior

  1459. and no song

  1460. is sweet enough

  1461. for our savior

  1462. and king.

  1463. This is the majesty

  1464. of our king.

  1465. This is why

  1466. what Jesus does

  1467. in verses 12

  1468. to 13

  1469. does not

  1470. surprise me.

  1471. And Jesus

  1472. entered the

  1473. temple

  1474. and drove

  1475. out all

  1476. who sold

  1477. and bought

  1478. in the temple

  1479. and he

  1480. overturned

  1481. the tables

  1482. of the money

  1483. changers

  1484. and the seats

  1485. of those

  1486. who sold

  1487. pigeons.

  1488. He said to them

  1489. it is written

  1490. my house

  1491. shall be called

  1492. a house

  1493. of prayer

  1494. but you

  1495. make it

  1496. a den

  1497. of robbers.

  1498. some people

  1499. read this

  1500. and think

  1501. man

  1502. Jesus

  1503. seems a little

  1504. unhinged

  1505. here

  1506. a little

  1507. bit over

  1508. the top

  1509. maybe

  1510. he's got

  1511. some anger

  1512. issues

  1513. absolutely

  1514. not

  1515. it's the

  1516. only

  1517. proper

  1518. and righteous

  1519. response

  1520. for the

  1521. son of

  1522. God

  1523. there's

  1524. several

  1525. reasons

  1526. for this

  1527. one

  1528. what Jesus

  1529. mentions

  1530. house

  1531. of

  1532. prayer

  1533. that's

  1534. an allusion

  1535. to Isaiah

  1536. 56

  1537. when God

  1538. spoke

  1539. and said

  1540. that one

  1541. day when

  1542. his salvation

  1543. comes

  1544. to Jerusalem

  1545. that foreigners

  1546. and Gentiles

  1547. will come

  1548. and pray

  1549. and seek

  1550. the Lord

  1551. God

  1552. in this

  1553. house

  1554. of prayer

  1555. and where

  1556. are they

  1557. having

  1558. all these

  1559. commercial

  1560. activities

  1561. inside the

  1562. temple

  1563. they're doing

  1564. it in the

  1565. court of

  1566. the Gentiles

  1567. a little

  1568. bit of

  1569. Jewish

  1570. ethnic

  1571. superiority

  1572. here

  1573. hey

  1574. it's

  1575. crowded

  1576. busy

  1577. during the

  1578. Passover

  1579. where should

  1580. we put

  1581. these

  1582. money changers

  1583. and the

  1584. pigeon

  1585. sellers

  1586. just put

  1587. them in

  1588. the

  1589. court

  1590. of

  1591. the

  1592. Gentiles

  1593. and Jesus

  1594. says

  1595. no

  1596. this is

  1597. a place

  1598. we're

  1599. there

  1600. to come

  1601. and seek

  1602. God

  1603. my

  1604. father

  1605. I

  1606. would

  1607. not

  1608. have

  1609. them

  1610. here

  1611. he

  1612. calls

  1613. it

  1614. a

  1615. den

  1616. of

  1617. robbers

  1618. that's

  1619. an

  1620. allusion

  1621. to

  1622. Jeremiah

  1623. 7

  1624. where

  1625. God

  1626. accuses

  1627. his

  1628. own

  1629. people

  1630. of

  1631. worshiping

  1632. idols

  1633. and

  1634. Baals

  1635. throughout

  1636. the

  1637. week

  1638. and

  1639. then

  1640. they

  1641. come

  1642. to

  1643. worship

  1644. God

  1645. on

  1646. the

  1647. Sabbath

  1648. they

  1649. come

  1650. to

  1651. worship

  1652. God

  1653. at

  1654. the

  1655. temple

  1656. and

  1657. he

  1658. says

  1659. no

  1660. you're

  1661. turning

  1662. my

  1663. temple

  1664. into

  1665. a

  1666. den

  1667. of

  1668. robbers

  1669. so

  1670. there's

  1671. an

  1672. implicit

  1673. there's

  1674. an

  1675. application

  1676. here

  1677. that

  1678. Jesus

  1679. is

  1680. making

  1681. to

  1682. you

  1683. obey

  1684. other

  1685. gods

  1686. you

  1687. serve

  1688. other

  1689. lords

  1690. and

  1691. you

  1692. disobey

  1693. me

  1694. throughout

  1695. your

  1696. life

  1697. and

  1698. you

  1699. come

  1700. to

  1701. the

  1702. temple

  1703. like

  1704. you

  1705. are

  1706. my

  1707. people

  1708. you're

  1709. turning

  1710. into

  1711. a

  1712. den

  1713. of

  1714. robbers

  1715. but

  1716. centrally

  1717. and I

  1718. think

  1719. the

  1720. thing

  1721. that

  1722. Jesus

  1723. is

  1724. most

  1725. upset

  1726. about

  1727. here

  1728. in

  1729. addition

  1730. to

  1731. all

  1732. of

  1733. that

  1734. the

  1735. one

  1736. that

  1737. Matthew

  1738. focuses

  1739. on

  1740. is

  1741. the

  1742. presence

  1743. of

  1744. the

  1745. merchants

  1746. and

  1747. the

  1748. money

  1749. changers

  1750. in

  1751. the

  1752. temple

  1753. the

  1754. fact

  1755. that

  1756. they

  1757. exist

  1758. in

  1759. Jerusalem

  1760. during

  1761. the

  1762. Passover

  1763. is

  1764. not

  1765. at

  1766. all

  1767. remarkable

  1768. pigeons

  1769. were

  1770. commonly

  1771. used

  1772. in

  1773. sacrificial

  1774. offerings

  1775. in

  1776. worship

  1777. and

  1778. it

  1779. would

  1780. have

  1781. been

  1782. difficult

  1783. imagine

  1784. if you're

  1785. coming

  1786. from

  1787. far

  1788. away

  1789. coming

  1790. from

  1791. Saudi

  1792. Arabia

  1793. let's

  1794. say

  1795. you're

  1796. trying

  1797. to

  1798. go

  1799. to

  1800. Jerusalem

  1801. and

  1802. that

  1803. entire

  1804. journey

  1805. you're

  1806. bringing

  1807. along

  1808. some

  1809. pigeons

  1810. !

  1811. from

  1812. afar

  1813. to

  1814. say

  1815. hey

  1816. you

  1817. can

  1818. buy

  1819. the

  1820. pigeons

  1821. here

  1822. because

  1823. it's

  1824. much

  1825. easier

  1826. to

  1827. transport

  1828. money

  1829. just

  1830. bring

  1831. your

  1832. money

  1833. you

  1834. can

  1835. buy

  1836. the

  1837. pigeons

  1838. here

  1839. and

  1840. you

  1841. can

  1842. offer

  1843. them

  1844. a

  1845. sacrifice

  1846. similarly

  1847. the

  1848. money

  1849. changers

  1850. were

  1851. a

  1852. necessary

  1853. part

  1854. of

  1855. the

  1856. Jerusalem

  1857. life

  1858. at

  1859. the

  1860. time

  1861. because

  1862. the

  1863. Jewish

  1864. law

  1865. stipulated

  1866. that

  1867. the

  1868. temple

  1869. tax

  1870. which

  1871. was

  1872. required

  1873. of

  1874. every

  1875. Jewish

  1876. male

  1877. 20

  1878. years

  1879. old

  1880. or

  1881. older

  1882. be

  1883. paid

  1884. quality

  1885. but

  1886. pilgrims

  1887. would

  1888. bring

  1889. all

  1890. kinds

  1891. of

  1892. coins

  1893. from

  1894. all

  1895. over

  1896. the

  1897. place

  1898. and

  1899. so

  1900. this

  1901. was

  1902. also

  1903. a

  1904. service

  1905. that

  1906. was

  1907. offered

  1908. to

  1909. the

  1910. pilgrims

  1911. and

  1912. of

  1913. course

  1914. the

  1915. pigeon

  1916. sellers

  1917. and

  1918. the

  1919. money

  1920. changers

  1921. would

  1922. make

  1923. some

  1924. profit

  1925. off

  1926. of

  1927. these

  1928. commercial

  1929. activities

  1930. and

  1931. some

  1932. people

  1933. think

  1934. that

  1935. they

  1936. were

  1937. being

  1938. extortionists

  1939. and

  1940. stealing

  1941. from

  1942. people

  1943. in that

  1944. sense

  1945. and

  1946. that's

  1947. why

  1948. Jesus

  1949. calls

  1950. them

  1951. the

  1952. den

  1953. of

  1954. robbers

  1955. I

  1956. don't

  1957. think

  1958. that

  1959. because

  1960. it

  1961. says

  1962. Jesus

  1963. doesn't

  1964. merely

  1965. drive

  1966. out

  1967. the

  1968. sellers

  1969. it

  1970. also

  1971. says

  1972. that

  1973. he

  1974. drives

  1975. out

  1976. those

  1977. who

  1978. bought

  1979. in

  1980. the

  1981. temple

  1982. in

  1983. verse

  1984. 12

  1985. he

  1986. has

  1987. a

  1988. problem

  1989. with

  1990. the

  1991. buyers

  1992. too

  1993. so

  1994. it's

  1995. not

  1996. unfair

  1997. marketing

  1998. practices

  1999. that

  2000. Jesus

  2001. is

  2002. after

  2003. he's

  2004. incensed

  2005. by the

  2006. very

  2007. presence

  2008. of

  2009. trade

  2010. activity

  2011. inside

  2012. the

  2013. temple

  2014. in

  2015. another

  2016. instance

  2017. Jesus

  2018. appears

  2019. to have

  2020. cleansed

  2021. the

  2022. temple

  2023. on

  2024. another

  2025. instance

  2026. earlier

  2027. in

  2028. his

  2029. ministry

  2030. and

  2031. that's

  2032. recorded

  2033. in

  2034. John

    John 2 chapter mention

  2035. chapter

  2036. 2

  2037. and

  2038. there

  2039. Jesus

  2040. says

  2041. specifically

  2042. take

  2043. these

  2044. things

  2045. away

  2046. do

  2047. not

  2048. make

  2049. my

  2050. father's

  2051. house

  2052. a

  2053. house

  2054. of

  2055. trade

  2056. I

  2057. know

  2058. some

  2059. of

  2060. you

  2061. guys

  2062. are

  2063. traders

  2064. and

  2065. there's

  2066. nothing

  2067. wrong

  2068. with

  2069. your

  2070. job

  2071. it's

  2072. not

  2073. the

  2074. activity

  2075. per

  2076. se

  2077. but

  2078. that

  2079. they

  2080. were

  2081. engaging

  2082. in

  2083. that

  2084. activity

  2085. inside

  2086. the

  2087. house

  2088. of

  2089. God

  2090. why

  2091. why

  2092. couldn't

  2093. they

  2094. sell

  2095. the

  2096. pigeons

  2097. and

  2098. exchange

  2099. currency

  2100. outside

  2101. the

  2102. temple

  2103. why

  2104. did

  2105. it

  2106. have

  2107. to

  2108. be

  2109. inside

  2110. the

  2111. temple

  2220. disrespectful

  2221. to

  2223. imagine

  2302. the

  2305. I mean

  2306. when we

  2307. when we

  2308. talk to

  2309. someone

  2310. I mean

  2311. we do

  2312. this all

  2313. the time

  2314. but we

  2315. should

  2316. fix

  2317. that

  2318. right

  2319. when we

  2320. talk to

  2321. each other

  2322. often

  2323. the person

  2324. you're

  2332. consider

  2333. that

  2334. rude

  2335. right

  2336. when we

  2337. approach

  2338. the

  2340. God

  2341. the

  2342. king

  2343. of

  2344. kings

  2345. do we

  2346. come

  2347. with

  2348. less

  2349. reverence

  2350. the

  2352. is not

  2356. is not

  2357. a

  2361. is not

  2362. a

  2363. TED

  2365. we

  2366. gather

  2367. in the

  2368. name

  2369. of

  2370. Jesus

  2371. Christ

  2372. as

  2373. the

  2375. of

  2376. God

  2377. in

  2378. the

  2380. of

  2381. the

  2382. king

  2383. of

  2385. himself

  2386. and

  2387. we

  2388. hear

  2389. from

  2391. as

  2392. he

  2393. speaks

  2394. from

  2395. his

  2396. word

  2397. and

  2398. yes

  2399. our

  2400. worship

  2401. should

  2402. be

  2403. joyful

  2404. yes

  2405. we're

  2406. commended

  2407. to

  2408. make

  2409. a

  2410. joyful

  2411. noise

  2412. to

  2413. the

  2414. rock

  2415. of

  2416. our

  2417. salvation

  2418. in

  2419. Psalm

  2420. 95

  2421. we're

  2422. supposed

  2423. to sing

  2424. with

  2425. thankfulness

  2426. in our

  2427. hearts

  2428. to God

  2429. but is

  2430. there

  2431. simultaneously

  2432. a

  2433. reverence

  2434. fit for

  2435. the

  2436. king

  2437. of

  2438. majesty

  2439. in our

  2440. attitude

  2441. and posture

  2442. of

  2443. worship

  2444. humility

  2445. and reverent

  2446. fear

  2447. Isaiah 66

  2448. 2

  2449. this is

  2450. the one

  2451. to whom

  2452. I will

  2453. look

  2454. he who

  2455. is

  2456. humble

  2457. and

  2458. contrite

  2459. in spirit

  2460. and

  2461. trembles

  2462. at my

  2463. word

  2464. but if

  2465. our

  2466. king

  2467. really

  2468. is

  2469. that

  2470. majestic

  2471. and

  2472. glorious

  2473. and

  2474. fierce

  2475. and

  2476. holy

  2477. as

  2478. Jesus

  2479. demonstrates

  2480. who

  2481. dares

  2482. approach

  2483. him

  2484. we can

  2485. approach

  2486. this

  2487. king

  2488. because

  2489. he's

  2490. not only

  2491. majestic

  2492. but also

  2493. meek

  2494. and

  2495. humble

  2496. he

  2497. perfectly

  2498. combines

  2499. the two

  2500. extremes

  2501. go back

  2502. with me

  2503. to verse

  2504. five

  2505. maybe

  2506. some

  2507. of you

  2508. had

  2509. this

  2510. objection

  2511. spring to

  2512. your mind

  2513. as I was

  2514. preaching on

  2515. this passage

  2516. earlier

  2517. if Jesus

  2518. is not

  2519. being demur

  2520. about his

  2521. kingship

  2522. if he

  2523. really is

  2524. being in

  2525. your face

  2526. about his

  2527. messianic

  2528. identity

  2529. if riding

  2530. down on

  2531. a donkey

  2532. really is

  2533. a sign

  2534. of kingship

  2535. and rulership

  2536. why does

  2537. it say

  2538. in verse

  2539. five

  2540. behold

  2541. your king

  2542. is coming

  2543. to you

  2544. humble

  2545. and mounted

  2546. on a donkey

  2547. on a colt

  2548. the foal

  2549. of a beast

  2550. of burden

  2551. doesn't that

  2552. mean Jesus

  2553. is being

  2554. humble

  2555. by riding

  2556. on a donkey

  2557. if Jesus

  2558. is declaring

  2559. his kingship

  2560. openly

  2561. by riding

  2562. a donkey

  2563. how is

  2564. that

  2565. humble

  2566. the description

  2567. of Jesus

  2568. as humble

  2569. does not

  2570. stem from

  2571. the lowliness

  2572. of the donkey

  2573. but from

  2574. the fact

  2575. that Jesus

  2576. comes

  2577. in peace

  2578. as was

  2579. prophesied

  2580. in Zechariah

  2581. nine

  2582. the Greek

  2583. word

  2584. translated

  2585. humble

  2586. here

  2587. in verse

  2588. five

  2589. is the same

  2590. word

  2591. translated

  2592. as meek

  2593. in Matthew

  2594. chapter five

  2595. verse five

  2596. blessed are

  2597. the meek

  2598. for they

  2599. shall inherit

  2600. the earth

  2601. the world

  2602. thinks

  2603. that it's

  2604. the aggressive

  2605. and the assertive

  2606. who will inherit

  2607. the earth

  2608. but Jesus

  2609. taught that

  2610. it's the meek

  2611. who will inherit

  2612. the earth

  2613. the same word

  2614. is translated

  2615. as gentle

  2616. to describe

  2617. Jesus

  2618. in Matthew

  2619. 11 29

  2620. come to me

  2621. all who labor

  2622. and are heavy laden

2623. and I will give you rest

2624. take my yoke upon you

  2625. and learn from me

  2626. for I am gentle

  2627. and lowly in heart

2628. and you will find rest

  2629. for your souls

2630. for my yoke is easy

  2631. and my burden

  2632. is light

  2633. King Jesus

  2634. comes in humility

  2635. and gentleness

  2636. because he does not

  2637. come to lay

  2638. a heavy burden

  2639. on his people

  2640. but to lift up

  2641. their burdens

  2642. King Jesus

  2643. comes to a city

  2644. full of his enemies

  2645. people who are waiting

  2646. with proverbial

  2647. pitchforks

  2648. to with trumped up

  2649. charges

  2650. slander him

  2651. condemn him

  2652. and crucify him

  2653. on the cross

  2654. yet instead

  2655. of riding in

  2656. on a stallion

  2657. to wage war

  2658. against them

  2659. and subdue

  2660. these rebels

  2661. Jesus comes

  2662. on a colt

  2663. sauntering down

  2664. the mountain

  2665. in peace

  2666. not to kill

  2667. sinners

  2668. but to be

  2669. killed

  2670. in the place

  2671. of sinners

  2672. like you

  2673. and me

  2674. he comes

  2675. to Jerusalem

  2676. as the king

  2677. who will be

  2678. slaughtered

  2679. like a lamb

  2680. why is it

  2681. humble

  2682. for him

  2683. to ride

  2684. down

  2685. in a donkey

  2686. because he

  2687. comes down

  2688. even though

  2689. he comes

  2690. in his majesty

  2691. he comes

  2692. to embrace

  2693. the weak

  2694. and the poor

  2695. and the needy

  2696. and to save

  2697. those who are lowly

  2698. look at who

  2699. comes to Jesus

  2700. in verse 14

  2701. this majestic

  2702. glorious king

  2703. that we saw

  2704. in his ride

  2705. down to Jerusalem

  2706. who comes to him

  2707. in verse 14

  2708. and the blind

  2709. and the lame

  2710. came to him

  2711. in the temple

  2712. and he healed

  2713. them

  2714. the blind

  2715. and the lame

  2716. are the ones

  2717. who are

  2718. irresistibly

  2719. drawn to

  2720. this majestic

  2721. king

  2722. but how dare

  2723. they

  2724. Leviticus 21

  2725. specifically said

  2726. that no one

  2727. who has

  2728. a blemish

  2729. may approach

  2730. to offer

  2731. the bread

  2732. of his God

  2733. for no one

  2734. who has

  2735. a blemish

  2736. shall draw near

  2737. a man

  2738. blind

  2739. or lame

  2740. the blind

  2741. and the lame

  2742. even if you

  2743. are a descendant

  2744. of Aaron

  2745. and of the

  2746. priestly class

  2747. in order

  2748. you were not

  2749. allowed

  2750. if you were

  2751. blind or lame

  2752. to come

  2753. and offer

  2754. your sacrifices

  2755. at the temple

  2756. in 2 Samuel 5

  2757. 6-8

  2758. when King David

  2759. was attacking

  2760. Jerusalem

  2761. which was occupied

  2762. at the time

  2763. by the Jebusites

  2764. the Jebusites

  2765. jeered at David

  2766. saying

  2767. you will not

  2768. come in here

  2769. but the blind

  2770. and the lame

  2771. will ward you off

  2772. they were so

  2773. confident

  2774. and secure

  2775. in their own

  2776. defenses

  2777. that they mocked

  2778. David saying

  2779. you're not

2780. going to get in here

  2781. even our blind

  2782. and the lame

  2783. can ward you off

  2784. so David

  2785. turned that

  2786. mockery against

  2787. him

  2788. as he successfully

  2789. conquered Jerusalem

  2790. saying that they

  2791. are the blind

  2792. and the lame

  2793. and that became

  2794. a proverb

  2795. in Jerusalem

  2796. that the Jews

  2797. knew at the time

  2798. which is to say

  2799. that the blind

  2800. and the lame

  2801. will not come

  2802. into the house

  2803. into the house

  2804. of God

  2805. they are referring

  2806. to the Jebusites

  2807. and those who

  2808. oppose God

  2809. in the joint

  2810. security area

  2811. inside the Korean

  2812. demilitarized zone

  2813. I don't know

  2814. if you guys

  2815. have seen pictures

  2816. of this

  2817. between North

  2818. and South Korea

  2819. there's that

  2820. dividing line

  2821. historically

  2822. I don't know

2823. if they still do it

  2824. now

  2825. historically

  2826. a soldier

  2827. from North Korea

  2828. and a soldier

  2829. from South Korea

  2830. would stand

  2831. face to face

  2832. sometimes just

  2833. feet apart

  2834. staring each other

  2835. down across the line

  2836. an iconic

  2837. Cold War standoff

  2838. and I remember

  2839. reading years ago

  2840. that despite

  2841. majority of

  2842. North Korean soldiers

  2843. being skinny

  2844. short

  2845. and malnourished

  2846. they would always

  2847. post the healthiest

  2848. and the tallest

  2849. and the strongest

  2850. looking soldier

  2851. at that post

  2852. to intimidate

  2853. the South

  2854. to posture

  2855. and say

  2856. this is what

  2857. all our soldiers

  2858. look like

  2859. you know

  2860. but imagine

  2861. if they put

  2862. instead there

  2863. a blind soldier

  2864. groping about

  2865. or a lame soldier

  2866. on a wheelchair

  2867. on that post

  2868. what message

  2869. would that send

  2870. how does that

  2871. glorify

  2872. the king

  2873. and yet

  2874. those are

  2875. the people

  2876. that Jesus

  2877. welcomes

  2878. inside the temple

  2879. the literally

  2880. blind

  2881. and the lame

  2882. those who are

  2883. proverbially

  2884. the outcasts

  2885. of society

  2886. the people

  2887. who have

  2888. nothing to offer

  2889. to the king

  2890. they're the ones

  2891. that king Jesus

  2892. welcomes

  2893. into his entourage

  2894. this is the day

  2895. that Micah 4

  2896. 6-7

  2897. prophesied

  2898. that we read

  2899. for the assurance

  2900. of pardon

  2901. the lame

  2902. I will make

  2903. the remnant

  2904. and those

  2905. who were cast

  2906. off

  2907. are strong

  2908. nations

  2909. isn't this why

  2910. over and over

  2911. again

  2912. throughout the

  2913. gospel of

  2914. Matthew

  2915. we've seen

  2916. Jesus

  2917. make the blind

  2918. see

  2919. and make

  2920. the lame

  2921. walk

  2922. that's

  2923. kind of

  2924. the signature

  2925. miracle

  2926. that Jesus

  2927. does

  2928. over and over

  2929. again

  2930. Matthew 11-5

  2931. Matthew 15-30

  2932. isn't this why

  2933. in the parable

  2934. of the banquet

  2935. that Jesus tells

  2936. in Luke

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  2937. chapter 14

  2938. 12-14

  2939. the master

  2940. of the house

  2941. who represents

  2942. God

  2943. invites to

  2944. his great feast

  2945. the poor

  2946. the crippled

  2947. the blind

  2948. and the lame

  2949. this is what

  2950. Jesus said

  2951. earlier in

  2952. Matthew 9

  2953. 12-13

  2954. when the Pharisees

  2955. were grumbling

  2956. that Jesus

  2957. was befriending

  2958. tax collectors

  2959. and sinners

  2960. who were coming

  2961. to him

  2962. and repenting

  2963. of their sin

  2964. why do you

  2965. welcome them

  2966. and Jesus

  2967. said to them

  2968. it is not

  2969. the healthy

  2970. who need

  2971. a doctor

  2972. but the sick

  2973. for I have

  2974. come to call

  2975. the righteous

  2976. not the righteous

  2977. but the sinners

  2978. I'm a doctor

  2979. who have come

  2980. for the lame

  2981. I'm a doctor

  2982. who have come

  2983. for the blind

  2984. and it's not

  2985. just the blind

  2986. and the lame

  2987. it says in

  2988. verses 15-16

  2989. that the children

  2990. are crying out

  2991. to Jesus

  2992. Hosanna

  2993. to the son

  2994. of David

  2995. and Jesus

  2996. says out of

  2997. the mouth

  2998. of infants

  2999. and nursing

  3000. babies

  3001. you have

  3002. prepared

  3003. praise

  3004. if you trace

  3005. that back

  3006. to the original

  3007. in Psalm 8

    Psalms 8:2

  3008. verse 2

  3009. it actually

  3010. says strength

  3011. instead of praise

  3012. it says out of

  3013. the mouth

  3014. of babies

  3015. and infants

  3016. you have

  3017. established

  3018. strength

  3019. or fortress

  3020. or stronghold

  3021. because of

  3022. your foes

  3023. to steal

  3024. the enemy

  3025. and the avenger

  3026. how is it

  3027. that God

  3028. fortifies

  3029. his heavenly

  3030. dwelling place

  3031. with strength

  3032. how does God

  3033. do that

  3034. according to

  3035. Psalm 8

  3036. it's what comes

  3037. out of the mouth

  3038. of babies

  3039. and infants

  3040. he means

  3041. that by the

  3042. babbling praise

  3043. of babies

  3044. and infants

  3045. God

  3046. strengthens

  3047. his fortress

  3048. and silences

  3049. his enemies

  3050. and defeats

  3051. them

  3052. this is why

  3053. the Greek

  3054. translation

  3055. of the Hebrew

  3056. Bible

  3057. the Septuagint

  3058. said out of

  3059. the mouth

  3060. of babies

  3061. and infants

  3062. you have

  3063. prepared

  3064. praise

  3065. and that's

  3066. what Jesus

  3067. is referencing

  3068. so who are

  3069. these

  3070. soldiers

  3071. and guards

  3072. that King

  3073. Jesus uses

  3074. to fortify

  3075. and represent

  3076. the majesty

  3077. of his kingdom

  3078. infants

  3079. and nursing

  3080. babies

  3081. how can

  3082. that be

  3083. isn't that

  3084. why

  3085. Jesus

  3086. again and

  3087. again

  3088. throughout the

  3089. Gospel of

  3090. Matthew

  3091. has been

  3092. calling his

  3093. disciples

  3094. the little

  3095. ones

  3096. Matthew

  3097. 1042

  3098. 186

  3099. isn't this

  3100. why Jesus

  3101. repeatedly

  3102. said

  3103. unless you

  3104. turn and

  3105. become like

  3106. children

  3107. you will

  3108. never

  3109. enter

  3110. the kingdom

  3111. of heaven

  3112. whoever

  3113. humbles

  3114. himself

  3115. like this

  3116. child

  3117. is the

  3118. greatest

  3119. in the

  3120. kingdom

  3121. of heaven

  3122. so then

  3123. who are

  3124. the blind

  3125. and the

  3126. lame

  3127. and the

  3128. babies

  3129. and the

  3130. infants

  3131. that Jesus

  3132. invites

  3133. into his

  3134. kingdom

  3135. they are

  3136. those who

  3137. acknowledge

  3138. their need

  3139. those who

  3140. acknowledge

  3141. that they

  3142. are sinners

  3143. in need

  3144. of a savior

  3145. people who

  3146. recognize

  3147. that their

  3148. own righteousness

  3149. and credentials

  3150. are completely

  3151. inadequate

  3152. and depend

  3153. on the

  3154. mercy of the

  3155. king

  3156. alone

  3157. for their

  3158. salvation

  3159. people who

  3160. say here

  3161. I am

  3162. I want to

  3163. serve you

  3164. I want to

  3165. serve you

  3166. king

  3167. Jesus

  3168. I want to

  3169. give my

  3170. life to

  3171. you

  3172. I want to

  3173. represent

  3174. you

  3175. I want to

  3176. fight for

  3177. you

  3178. but woe is

  3179. me

  3180. I am

  3181. blind and

  3182. lame

  3183. they're the

  3184. ones

  3185. that

  3186. Jesus

  3187. calls

  3188. into his

  3189. kingdom

  3190. I'll

  3191. heal you

  3192. are you

  3193. sinner

  3194. I will

  3195. cleanse

  3196. you

  3197. are you

  3198. blind

  3199. I'll make

  3200. you see

  3201. are you

  3202. lame

  3203. I will

  3204. make you

  3205. walk

  3206. I am

  3207. the king

  3208. for sinners

  3209. sick and

  3210. sore

  3211. so come

  3212. to me

  3213. I am

  3214. the king

  3215. who died

  3216. for your

  3217. sins

  3218. on the

  3219. cross

  3220. so that

  3221. you might

  3222. be forgiven

  3223. and declared

  3224. righteous

  3225. it's for

  3226. you

  3227. that I

  3228. roll down

  3229. Mount of

  3230. Olives

  3231. to Jerusalem

  3232. not on a

  3233. war stallion

  3234. but on a

  3235. donkey

  3236. that I

  3237. might

  3238. proclaim

  3239. peace

  3240. not to

  3241. judge

  3242. sinners

  3243. but to

  3244. justify

  3245. sinners

  3246. not to

  3247. kill the

  3248. rebels

  3249. but to

  3250. redeem

  3251. them

  3252. so will

  3253. you come

  3254. come to

  3255. king

  3256. jesus

  3257. today

  3258. let's

  3259. pray

  3260. oh king

  3261. jesus

  3262. we worship

  3263. you

  3264. you are

  3265. worthy

  3266. worthy of

  3267. all praise

  3268. honor

  3269. all rule

  3270. and glory

  3271. you are

  3272. worthy

  3273. and we

  3274. wish only

  3275. that we

  3276. could offer

  3277. you

  3278. the

  3279. worship

  3280. that

  3281. befits

  3282. your

  3283. glory

  3284. and

  3285. station

  3286. we only

  3287. wish

  3288. that we

  3289. could

  3290. render

  3291. useful

  3292. service

  3293. to you

  3294. our

  3295. king

  3296. we

  3297. thank you

  3298. dad

  3299. that you

  3300. do not

  3301. call the

  3302. righteous

  3303. but that

  3304. you call

  3305. sinners to

  3306. repentance

  3307. and you

  3308. justify

  3309. them

  3310. thank you

  3311. father for

  3312. your grace

  3313. in sending

  3314. jesus

  3315. your only

  3316. son

  3317. to rescue

  3318. us

  3319. it is

  3320. to him

  3321. and through

  3322. him to

  3323. you

  3324. oh lord

  3325. that we

  3326. pledge

  3327. our

  3328. allegiance

  3329. make us

  3330. a faithful

  3331. people

  3332. who love

  3333. and serve

  3334. you all

  3335. our days

  3336. in jesus

  3337. name we

  3338. pray

  3339. amen
