  1. I want to look at Romans chapter 1 verses 16 to 18 today.

    Romans 1:16–18

  2. And I want to address the issue of being unashamed of the gospel.

  3. ! Have you ever found yourself ashamed of the gospel?

  4. ! I imagine if you are a believer, you have had some instance of this.

  5. I remember one time when I was back in college, I was working retail.

  6. I was a relatively new believer, very excited about the Lord,

  7. and very faithful pretty much to share the gospel when I could.

  8. And I was working in retail and just kind of enjoying life

  9. and the fact that I belonged to Jesus.

  10. I was rescued from my sin and so forth.

  11. And I was whistling as I was working.

  12. And then I went over to a customer and I said,

  13. do you need help with anything more?

  14. And he said, yeah. Why are you so happy?

  15. Golden moment, right?

  16. He asked me why you're so happy.

  17. It's my chance to say, and for some reason,

  18. I don't know if I was in, I think I was intimidated by the guy.

  19. He was a big guy.

  20. I came up with a really pathetic answer.

  21. Instead of saying what I ought to, I said, well, I just am.

  22. And it was just the worst answer.

  23. And I felt terrible for it.

  24. I don't know if you've had a moment like that.

  25. That's not my only moment.

  26. But I'm not here to share my bad moments.

  27. There's that reality of being ashamed of the gospel.

  28. And we do it for different reasons.

  29. But God doesn't leave us there in that place of being ashamed and struggling.

  30. He helps us.

  31. He's given us his word.

  32. His word is living and active.

  33. And he wants to minister to us through it.

  34. And to do that even today.

  35. So if you are someone who has struggled like me with being ashamed of the gospel,

  36. I have great hope for you.

  37. Because God has given us his word.

  38. And by his spirit, he wants to speak to us.

  39. So let's pray.

  40. And ask for his help that we might learn and respond to his word.

  41. I'll pray.

  42. And then we can stand to hear God's word read.

  43. Lord, we thank you for you and your word.

  44. And we thank you, Lord, that you are full of mercy and patient.

  45. And Lord, in you is power.

  46. And your word shapes us and changes us and enables us to walk with you and to walk in your way.

  47. So I pray, Lord, as we look at your word today, that we would receive your word.

  48. And you would grant us power to embrace it and to believe and obey.

  49. And I pray you'd help me, Lord.

  50. I feel weak.

  51. I feel especially weak this morning for whatever reason.

  52. But that's good because you're mighty.

  53. And I pray you would show yourself mighty today as we look at your word.

  54. Your life-giving, your true, your faithful word, your eternal word.

  55. And we ask these things in Christ's name.

  56. Amen.

  57. Amen.

  58. Please stand as we read God's word.

  59. Romans 1, 16 through 18.

  60. It says, Paul is speaking in the beginning of this letter.

  61. He says,

  62. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God,

  63. for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  64. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith,

  65. as it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  66. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men

  67. who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

  68. Romans 1, 16 through 18.

  69. God's word.

  70. You may be seated.

  71. Paul says plainly here in the beginning of verse 16,

  72. I am not ashamed of the gospel.

  73. Paul says that actually multiple times throughout his writings.

  74. You can find that.

  75. He is someone who is not ashamed of the gospel,

  76. but who also prays for boldness.

  77. He asks the churches to pray for boldness for him.

  78. And really this struggle is at the heart of every believer.

  79. This tendency to be ashamed, to not be bold.

  80. And yet Paul instructs us here in some key ways.

  81. And I want to take a look at these verses because they are Paul's reasons for not being ashamed,

  82. but they are more than just Paul's reasons for not being ashamed.

  83. They are our reasons.

  84. So if you look at these verses, you can see a logic that's here.

  85. First, of course, he says he's not ashamed of the gospel.

  86. And he says because it's the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.

  87. And then he gives the reason or that drives that.

  88. It's because in it a righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.

  89. And then verse 18, the problem behind this is the wrath of God is being revealed

  90. against all the unrighteousness, ungodliness of humanity.

  91. So he's really giving a reverse order.

  92. He says the problem at the end, then the answer,

  93. and then how that drives him not to be ashamed.

  94. And so I want to look at that logic, but the other way around.

  95. So we're going to look at the problem first,

  96. this reality of the wrath of God being revealed.

  97. And then we're going to look at the answer,

  98. the righteousness of God revealed in the gospel,

  99. and then talk about the power of God and then why we're not ashamed.

  100. In all this, at every point that I'm making,

  101. there are reasons in these truths that drive us not being ashamed.

  102. So we'll just walk through it.

  103. So first, we're going to start at the end in verse 18 on the wrath,

  104. God's wrath against our sin.

  105. It says,

  106. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven

  107. against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men

  108. who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

  109. This statement is what is the background

  110. for everything that Paul is saying in this section.

  111. So notice four things.

  112. It speaks of God's wrath.

  113. God's wrath.

  114. Now, God's wrath is not human anger.

  115. God's wrath is not in personal karma.

  116. It is a settled, holy, judicial response

  117. of a perfectly righteous God towards evil.

  118. Second, it says it's being revealed.

  119. It's ongoing.

  120. God is actually revealing his wrath now.

  121. And of course, it will be ultimately revealed in the final judgments.

  122. But it's happening now.

  123. Third, it says it's from heaven.

  124. It's God's wrath.

  125. It's just.

  126. And it's against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.

  127. It's universal in scope.

  128. And it's focused.

  129. It's reasonable.

  130. These are truths that are important to understand.

  131. And Paul actually takes time after verse 18

  132. to go through almost three chapters worth of why this is happening

  133. to explain the background.

  134. So I will just pretty quickly walk through that reasoning

  135. and examine it for us that we might understand

  136. this reality of the wrath of God.

  137. The ground for it is not God just being wrathful for any reason.

  138. And it's because of the unrighteousness and ungodliness of humanity.

  139. God's wrath is being revealed against ungodliness, against unrighteousness.

  140. This unrighteousness is a corporate reality for all of humanity.

  141. Chapter 1, he talks about that.

  142. It's a reality that is for all of us.

  143. It's for the self-righteous who think that they don't qualify,

  144. that they don't fall under this diagnosis.

  145. And ultimately, it confronts every human being.

  146. There's no unrighteous.

  147. No, not one.

  148. It's so important for us to understand this,

  149. to understand this dark background to the glorious gospel of grace.

  150. This dark background is really important to understand

  151. because if you don't get the dark background,

  152. the gospel doesn't look so bright and glorious.

  153. Matter of fact, why do we even need this gospel of grace?

  154. If we don't have a serious problem.

  155. This is the right diagnosis for our own situation,

  156. and we need to face it.

  157. And often, it's the failure to understand this diagnosis of humanity,

  158. all of humanity, and all of us also individually.

  159. That is why we're ashamed of the gospel.

  160. We don't understand how dire the circumstances are.

  161. The reality is for all of humanity, is for us, is for your neighbor, is for your family member.

  162. However, we subscribe to some other diagnosis of humanity often.

  163. There's often compromise.

  164. And we let the worldly ideas about humanity seep in and say,

  165. well, we're okay, actually.

  166. We're more or less good.

  167. But that's not what Romans says.

  168. Paul wants us to understand this dire situation that drives his compulsion

  169. to share the gospel with whomever he can,

  170. and his example for all of us as well,

  171. to follow him as he follows Christ.

  172. So chapter 1 goes at length to explain the situation

  173. that we are unrighteous corporately, culturally, as a civilization, as a species,

  174. even though God has displayed his glory and goodness clearly in creation.

  175. No one has an excuse because it's displayed clearly before all of humanity.

  176. Even though it's displayed, even though we are creatures made in his image,

  177. and therefore we know, all of us, every human, every culture,

  178. all of us knows right and wrong.

  179. It's there.

  180. You can study in terms of sociology all different people groups.

  181. They all know right and wrong at a fundamental level.

  182. They all share common morals.

  183. We know we're made in the image of God,

  184. even though we know right and wrong,

  185. even though we intuitively understand the natural order of things,

  186. even though all these things are there,

  187. we have rejected God and pushed the obvious aside.

  188. That's what Romans 1 teaches us.

  189. Not only have we just merely pushed it aside,

  190. we are actually actively spurting it.

  191. That's what Romans 1 teaches us.

  192. From one degree of corruption to another,

  193. we are actively suppressing the truth,

  194. as we saw Paul's statement in Romans 1.18.

  195. This is who we are.

  196. This is what we do.

  197. We have stricken gratitude and reverence from God

  198. from our songs, our stories, our celebrations.

  199. You see that all around us.

  200. God is the awkward and unwelcome guest in our culture, isn't he?

  201. And Romans 1 says,

  202. this is not by accident.

  203. This is on purpose.

  204. This is the situation.

  205. This is the sorry state of humanity.

  206. This is the ridiculous state of humanity.

  207. Humanity has credited nature rather than the creator.

  208. We've marveled at our own accomplishments

  209. rather than the fact that we can do nothing

  210. apart from the grace of God.

  211. We have ignored and rejected and denied

  212. and even raged against God.

  213. It's a ridiculous and terrible tragedy.

  214. That's what's clear here in Romans 1.

  215. The culmination of our folly is actually

  216. exchanging the glory of God

  217. and all of his goodness and glory

  218. as simply revealed in creation.

  219. We've exchanged that for the creation,

  220. for images made in the image of creation,

  221. mankind, animals, birds, and worse.

  222. We are hell-bent in worshiping anything else but God.

  223. And as we pursue this line,

  224. the choices get more and more bizarre.

  225. This is the reality of humanity.

  226. Paul accurately diagnoses us.

  227. And you just need to look around.

  228. Study our own culture.

  229. Look at history.

  230. It's undeniable.

  231. He is speaking the truth.

  232. We know it's spoken in God's very word.

  233. Therefore, it is true.

  234. But it's confirmed by our own observations around us.

  235. And we do this all right in front of God,

  236. living in his house, his world, his universe.

  237. We do it with images, people, celebrities, ideals,

  238. money, sex, power, entertainment, and self,

  239. and self-image on and on without stopping.

  240. And this is a cosmic crime.

  241. And we are all guilty.

  242. The late theology professor Cornelius Van Til

  243. spoke of humanity as a little girl

  244. sitting on her father's lap.

  245. Slapping him in the face.

  246. Telling him he doesn't exist.

  247. That's what we do.

  248. We sit on God's lap.

  249. We sit in his creation amidst his revelation

  250. of glory and goodness.

  251. And we slap him.

  252. You don't exist or you're mean.

  253. It's a cosmic crime.

  254. It's a sad reality.

  255. And as we do this, Paul talks about the results

  256. in chapter 1 of Romans.

  257. We reject God and our universe,

  258. our world, our culture, our relationships,

  259. they unravel.

  260. And so Paul says three times in chapter 1,

  261. God gave them up in their foolishness,

  262. in mankind's foolishness,

  263. our foolishness.

  264. Gave them up to the lust of their hearts.

  265. Gave them up to dishonorable passions.

  266. Gave them up to a debased mind.

  267. God said, okay, if this is your choice,

  268. I'm going to give you over to it.

  269. And here you go.

  270. And there we go.

  271. Abandoning God results in being abandoned

  272. by God to confusion and moral brokenness.

  273. And the picture is appalling.

  274. And we all know it shouldn't be this way.

  275. Paul says that we are filled

  276. with all manner of unrighteousness,

  277. wickedness, greed, malice,

  278. full of envy, murder, strife, deceit,

  279. malevolence, gossipers, slanderers,

  280. God-haters, insolent, arrogant, boastful,

  281. inventors of evil,

  282. disobedient to parents,

  283. foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

  284. This is humanity.

  285. All of us to one degree or another.

  286. So be careful, by the way.

  287. And I'll talk about this.

  288. Not to say, well, I'm not as bad

  289. as those others who do this.

  290. I can't be that bad.

  291. All of us are indicted by Romans 1 and 2 and 3

  292. to one degree or another.

  293. We are all guilty of these things.

  294. We only need to look around

  295. at our current moral landscape

  296. to recognize this.

  297. Our culture's present sexual ethics

  298. are now governed by desire and preference

  299. with personal identity

  300. locked into these choices.

  301. To value myself or anyone else,

  302. the rule goes,

  303. I must support whatever choices

  304. that person makes.

  305. And society has declared

  306. sexual freedom non-negotiable

  307. and treats anyone who disagrees

  308. as the moral problem.

  309. This is our culture,

  310. hating the truth

  311. and suppressing the truth

  312. of God's word.

  313. And in one way or the other,

  314. we are all guilty

  315. to a degree of related sins.

  316. And God,

  317. in his righteousness,

  318. gives sinners

  319. what they choose.

  320. And this is what we see in humanity.

  321. This is what we see all around us.

  322. This is what we see to some degree

  323. in our own hearts.

  324. See, it's not just out there.

  325. It's not just culture.

  326. It's not just history,

  327. but it's in all of us personally.

  328. And so Paul will take time

  329. in chapter 2

  330. to turn the tables

  331. on those who look at the culture

  332. and say,

  333. oh, it's awful.

  334. It's going downhill fast,

  335. but I'm not that bad.

  336. And he will turn the tables

  337. and say,

  338. you also are guilty.

  339. You who say they ought not to do this,

  340. you do it.

  341. Maybe not in the same way,

  342. maybe not to the same degree,

  343. but you do it as well.

  344. Well, I've never murdered anybody,

  345. but Jesus asks us,

  346. have you ever been bitterly angry

  347. with someone?

  348. Have you ever wished

  349. that person just simply

  350. wasn't in your life anymore?

  351. Is that really that different

  352. than murder?

  353. The same heart

  354. that destroys another human

  355. for our own convenience

  356. is there in all of us.

  357. Maybe you've never committed adultery,

  358. but have you lusted

  359. after someone

  360. wanting them in a way

  361. that doesn't belong to you

  362. and is not appropriate?

  363. We all are guilty.

  364. Well, I've never stolen,

  365. but really, have you?

  366. Have you taken advantage

  367. of anybody else in any way?

  368. Taking something from them

  369. that's not really yours to take?

  370. I don't really lie,

  371. but do you lie about others

  372. or promote lies

  373. and propagating things

  374. that are not verified

  375. and maybe slanderous?

  376. That's kind of what happens

  377. all around us in social media.

  378. We are all guilty.

  379. None of us are innocent in this,

  380. and nothing will help us really.

  381. No heightened activity

  382. in church membership.

  383. No knowing the truth

  384. or being orthodox

  385. in your profession of faith.

  386. No amount of good works.

  387. These things will not rescue us.

  388. They will not undo

  389. the unrighteousness

  390. that is in our hearts.

  391. It's dark,

  392. and we don't even know

  393. the half of it.

  394. Can you imagine?

  395. Maybe this will happen someday.

  396. We invent a brainwave detector

  397. that actually can interpret

  398. what's going on in your brain.

  399. So it's a brain.

  400. Imagine if you had

  401. on your phone this app.

  402. I don't think any of us

  403. would want to have it,

  404. but a brainwave monitor

  405. and interpreter

  406. that could take all the things

  407. you're thinking during the week

  408. and actually create videos

  409. and put those on your computer.

  410. And today, after church,

  411. we're actually going to have

  412. somebody's brainwave

  413. for this past week

  414. on the screen here,

  415. and we're all going to

  416. enjoy it together.

  417. Would anybody enjoy that?

  418. Would the person

  419. whose brainwaves are shown,

  420. whose videos are shown,

  421. enjoy that?

  422. No.

  423. That just shows us

  424. the reality that we don't

  425. like to face,

  426. that we are full

  427. of unrighteousness.

  428. It's at least embarrassing,

  429. if not terribly condemning.

  430. This is the reality.

  431. The story is told

  432. that the London Times

  433. once sent out an inquiry

  434. to famous authors

  435. asking them to write an essay

  436. about what's wrong

  437. with the world,

  438. and the famous author

  439. G.K. Chesterton

  440. wrote his essay

  441. saying simply this,

  442. Dear Sir,

  443. I am yours,

  444. G.K. Chesterton.

  445. I am.

  446. He understood

  447. the biblical truth.

  448. The problem with the world

  449. is not what's out there,

  450. it's what's in here

  451. in my heart.

  452. I am also unrighteous

  453. before a holy God.

  454. This is the reality.

  455. Romans 3 tells us,

  456. For all have sinned,

  457. all have sinned,

  458. and fall short

  459. of the glory of God.

  460. You, friend, brother,

  461. or sister,

  462. fall short

  463. of the glory of God.

  464. None is righteous,

  465. Romans 3, 10 and 11.

  466. No, not one.

  467. No one understands.

  468. No one seeks for God.

  469. This is the reality

  470. for all of us

  471. in our natural state.

  472. We are all unrighteous.

  473. We are all polluted by sin.

  474. We're like glasses of water

  475. into which mud

  476. has been introduced.

  477. Stinky, foul, sewer mud.

  478. And some of us,

  479. maybe the glass

  480. is almost all mud.

  481. And maybe you know it

  482. if that's the case.

  483. Others of us,

  484. it's just a little bit

  485. of stinky sewer mud.

  486. Just a little bit.

  487. And we're certainly

  488. not like those glasses

  489. that are all mud.

  490. But are any of the glasses

  491. fit to drink?

  492. Not one.

  493. We are all unrighteous

  494. before a holy God.

  495. And this diagnosis

  496. is so important.

  497. Understanding this truth.

  498. It's important, of course,

  499. because it's true.

  500. It's the ultimate reality.

  501. It's important to grasp

  502. because the world

  503. will give you

  504. every other diagnosis

  505. but this one.

  506. And that will affect you.

  507. And that will dampen

  508. your zeal

  509. to make

  510. the gospel of grace

  511. known

  512. to those around you.

  513. I know it's uncomfortable.

  514. And believe me,

  515. it's really awkward

  516. for me to come as your guest

  517. and just preach what I did.

  518. But we need to hear it.

  519. And we need to realize

  520. it's true.

  521. And we need to realize

  522. that this diagnosis

  523. is not given to us

  524. to condemn us

  525. but to rescue us.

  526. That's the trajectory

  527. of all this.

  528. This diagnosis

  529. of the dark backdrop

  530. to the gospel

  531. of our sickness,

  532. of our moral sickness

  533. is so important

  534. so that we might understand

  535. how much we need to cure.

  536. But not only you personally,

  537. of course,

  538. that's your first priority.

  539. But all those around you,

  540. and all peoples

  541. throughout the whole globe,

  542. need the cure

  543. that comes

  544. in relationship to this.

  545. Because it's not just

  546. that we're unrighteous

  547. but we're unrighteous

  548. before a holy God.

  549. God is holy.

  550. He is pure.

  551. He is pure goodness.

  552. He is infinitely glorious.

  553. And He is perfectly just.

  554. He's not capricious.

  555. He would never judge anything

  556. in a way that would be

  557. just over the top,

  558. excessive.

  559. Dante's Inferno

  560. is not biblical.

  561. But hell is.

  562. And God's perfect justice is.

  563. The wrath of God

  564. is not narcissism

  565. on God's part.

  566. It's His holy, patient,

  567. determined opposition

  568. to evil

  569. and attitude and action

  570. that leads Him

  571. to a faithful commitment

  572. to respond

  573. and eradicate all evil,

  574. to judge it all.

  575. And there is real evil

  576. all around us,

  577. inside of us.

  578. And God is the creator of all

  579. and Lord of all

  580. who is goodness.

  581. And so He must act.

  582. He must be just.

  583. Now we all understand justice.

  584. We do.

  585. When we see something done

  586. to an innocent person,

  587. relatively innocent person,

  588. we're shocked and concerned

  589. if we watched

  590. an elderly woman

  591. get knocked to the ground

  592. and robbed in the street.

  593. We probably would chase

  594. after the guy.

  595. We'd be upset at least.

  596. We understand justice.

  597. That's wrong

  598. and we feel it

  599. and we know it

  600. when we hear of

  601. the mistreatment of children

  602. and all these other evil things.

  603. We're indignant,

  604. appropriately so.

  605. We get justice.

  606. We understand it

  607. but we are often good

  608. at applying it to others

  609. and not to ourselves.

  610. And God is perfect

  611. in His justice.

  612. He must judge

  613. those who have sinned

  614. against the innocent one,

  615. God Himself,

  616. in His goodness and glory,

  617. in our rebellion.

  618. He must judge

  619. sin done against one another,

  620. against those made

  621. in the image of God.

  622. We have all fallen short

  623. and sinned in these ways.

  624. This justice is revealed

  625. from heaven

  626. by a perfect God.

  627. not an offended dictator

  628. but the Holy One.

  629. It's not vindictive.

  630. It's not cruel.

  631. It's not partial.

  632. It's perfect.

  633. Actually,

  634. the saints in heaven

  635. recorded in Revelation 15

  636. celebrate His justice

  637. and His judgment.

  638. Great and amazing

  639. are your deeds.

  640. It says,

  641. O Lord God,

  642. the Almighty,

  643. just and true

  644. are your ways,

  645. O King of the nations.

  646. They celebrate

  647. His perfect justice

  648. and His judgment.

  649. And His justice

  650. is exactly appropriate.

  651. And therefore,

  652. it is appropriately severe

  653. for sinners.

  654. The punishment

  655. fits the crime.

  656. Romans 6 tells us

  657. the wages of sin

  658. is death.

  659. Death.

  660. Death.

  661. Eternal separation

  662. from all the goodness

  663. and greatness

  664. of God

  665. and His mercy

  666. and kindness

  667. that we all know

  668. and we all take

  669. for granted.

  670. It is a just reckoning

  671. for those who reject God

  672. and persist in it

  673. who rely on their own

  674. supposed righteousness

  675. instead of running

  676. to Christ for rescue.

  677. That existence

  678. is eternal.

  679. Eternal separation.

  680. We call that

  681. hell.

  682. And Paul teaches

  683. in chapter 2 actually

  684. that those wages

  685. and implications

  686. and the fullness

  687. of God's justice

  688. is accumulating

  689. even now for us

  690. as we continue,

  691. if we do,

  692. continue to reject God.

  693. Romans 2.5,

  694. But because of your hard

  695. and impenitent heart

  696. you are storing up

  697. wrath for yourself

  698. on the day of wrath

  699. when God's righteous judgment

  700. will be revealed.

  701. We are storing it up

  702. if we continue

  703. to live in that place

  704. of sin,

  705. rebellion,

  706. and self-righteousness.

  707. We add to this

  708. terrible treasure chest.

  709. It makes me think

  710. of Marley

  711. in Christmas Carol

  712. as he encounters

  713. Ebenezer.

  714. And Ebenezer

  715. asks about this chain

  716. that Marley

  717. is carrying.

  718. And Marley

  719. says to Scrooge

  720. about the chain

  721. which is

  722. the judgment of God

  723. on Marley

  724. and on Scrooge

  725. he says

  726. it was as full,

  727. as heavy,

  728. and as long

  729. as this

  730. seven Christmas

  731. Eves ago.

  732. You have labored

  733. on it

  734. since.

  735. It is a ponderous

  736. chain.

  737. This is the reality

  738. in God's holiness

  739. and justice.

  740. He will bring

  741. a just reward,

  742. a just punishment

  743. for our sin.

  744. And apart from Christ

  745. we all,

  746. each one,

  747. and all humanity,

  748. each one,

  749. is in serious

  750. trouble.

  751. I take no pleasure

  752. in bringing you

  753. bad news,

  754. but it is the reality.

  755. And I must,

  756. for my own heart's sake,

  757. my own mind's sake,

  758. and for yours,

  759. remind you of this

  760. situation so that you

  761. don't go around

  762. thinking things are

  763. quite alright.

  764. Thank you.

  765. A.W. Tozer warned,

  766. the vague and tenuous

  767. hope that God

  768. is too kind

  769. to punish the ungodly

  770. has become a deadly

  771. opiate

  772. for the consciences

  773. of millions.

  774. And this opiate

  775. is in the air

  776. that we breathe.

  777. In August 2007,

  778. the I-35 bridge

  779. in Minneapolis

  780. collapsed.

  781. Major bridge,

  782. major highway,

  783. killing 13 people.

  784. Part of the tragedy

  785. is that the engineers

  786. knew the bridge

  787. needed repairs.

  788. And because of

  789. budget constraints,

  790. they hadn't gotten

  791. to it in time,

  792. and they assumed

  793. the bridge would

  794. last longer.

  795. They assumed the bridge

  796. would be okay.

  797. Thank you.

  798. And the reality is

  799. that people without Christ,

  800. our beloved family members

  801. and friends and neighbors,

  802. are traveling on a bridge

  803. destined to collapse.

  804. And we, like those engineers,

  805. think, well,

  806. we got time,

  807. and it's not that serious.

  808. They won't really happen.

  809. And we need to recognize,

  810. no,

  811. they're traveling through life

  812. on a collapsing bridge,

  813. and it will collapse.

  814. And we are called

  815. as ones who,

  816. if you know the good news,

  817. to come to the rescue

  818. and sharing that good news,

  819. to have that heart,

  820. to have a heart of compassion

  821. for those who are traveling

  822. on this bridge,

  823. even as Christ had compassion

  824. on sinners.

  825. sinners.

  826. This is the heart

  827. we all need.

  828. This is the heart you need

  829. on Tuesday at the office,

  830. Wednesday around the dinner table,

  831. Thursday with the neighbor

  832. across the way,

  833. each day of the week

  834. as we interact

  835. with those around us,

  836. to have the same heart.

  837. Well,

  838. that's the backdrop.

  839. That's the situation.

  840. That's the diagnosis.

  841. It's not the end of the story.

  842. Thank God.

  843. God has provided

  844. a way of escape

  845. from His just judgment.

  846. And His provided way

  847. actually is also

  848. perfectly just,

  849. perfectly righteous.

  850. He does not compromise

  851. His justice one bit

  852. in His solution

  853. for our unrighteousness.

  854. And Romans 1.17

  855. speaks of it,

  856. for in it the righteousness

  857. of God in the gospel

  858. is revealed

  859. from faith for faith.

  860. As it is written,

  861. the righteous

  862. shall live by faith.

  863. The righteousness of God here

  864. certainly involves

  865. His justice towards sin.

  866. It involves

  867. His perfect character.

  868. But it's speaking

  869. of a righteousness

  870. that comes to us,

  871. revealed from faith

  872. for faith,

  873. that would be given

  874. to those who live by faith.

  875. It's a righteous declaration

  876. given by God,

  877. a verdict in righteousness

  878. of not guilty,

  879. fully approved,

  880. accepted.

  881. And He grants this

  882. to sinners

  883. on the basis

  884. of the righteousness

  885. of another.

  886. Romans 3.

  887. After Paul has spent

  888. all this time

  889. talking about this

  890. dark backdrop,

  891. that is so important

  892. to understand

  893. and apply to our lives.

  894. He transitions

  895. once we recognize

  896. we don't have anything

  897. to stand on ourselves.

  898. He transitions

  899. to God's answer.

  900. But now,

  901. the righteousness

  902. of God

  903. has been manifested

  904. apart from the law,

  905. although the law

  906. and prophets

  907. bear witness to it.

  908. The righteousness

  909. of God

  910. through faith

  911. in Jesus Christ

  912. for all who believe

  913. and are justified

  914. by His grace

  915. as a gift

  916. through the redemption

  917. that is in Christ Jesus

  918. whom God put forward

  919. as a propitiation

  920. by His blood

  921. to be received by faith.

  922. This was to show

  923. God's righteousness.

  924. First,

  925. I just want you

  926. to recognize

  927. and we'll talk about

  928. how this all works,

  929. but to recognize

  930. that the center

  931. of this righteousness

  932. is not an idea,

  933. it's not a method,

  934. it's not a system.

  935. It is a person.

  936. His name is Jesus.

  937. He is the righteousness

  938. of God

  939. as we read earlier,

  940. because of Him

  941. you are in Christ Jesus

  942. who became to us

  943. wisdom from God,

  944. righteousness,

  945. sanctification,

  946. and redemption.

  947. It's the person of Jesus.

  948. Jesus Christ

  949. is God Himself

  950. who took on flesh

  951. to rescue us,

  952. to be the fulfillment

  953. of all righteousness

  954. in His life,

  955. in His faith,

  956. in His obedience

  957. as the perfect human being,

  958. to fulfill the promises

  959. of God

  960. that are throughout

  961. the Scriptures,

  962. and then to take

  963. that righteous,

  964. worthy,

  965. perfect life,

  966. that beautiful,

  967. glorious life,

  968. and then lay it down

  969. on the cross

  970. to die for sin.

  971. He who knew no sin

  972. became sin for us

  973. so that in Him

  974. we might become

  975. the righteousness of God.

  976. He became sin.

  977. He took upon Himself

  978. our sins,

  979. our unrighteousness,

  980. the fullness of it,

  981. all the evil,

  982. all the disgusting details

  983. that God knows

  984. in fullness

  985. were all put on Christ,

  986. the Holy One,

  987. bore our sin

  988. on the cross,

  989. and then the Holy One,

  990. the Father,

  991. poured out

  992. holy justice on Him.

  993. God Himself,

  994. Father, Son,

  995. and Holy Spirit,

  996. put forward Christ

  997. as this offering

  998. so that He Himself

  999. would receive

  1000. perfect,

  1001. complete,

  1002. final justice

  1003. for your sins,

1004. for all who would believe,

  1005. all and any,

  1006. whosoever.

1007. And if you're hearing this

  1008. today,

1009. maybe for the first time,

  1010. that includes you.

  1011. The invitation is to

  1012. whosoever would believe.

1013. This is an offer done.

  1014. In history,

  1015. it's real.

  1016. And God verified

  1017. its historical truth

  1018. by what we know

  1019. from the Scriptures,

  1020. but through the resurrection

  1021. of Christ,

  1022. it is real

  1023. and it is offered

  1024. whosoever should believe.

  1025. Our sins are placed

  1026. on Him

1027. and He pays the penalty.

  1028. He is a propitiation.

1029. That word is a word

  1030. we don't use much.

  1031. It's an offering

  1032. to appease wrath,

1033. but in the case of God,

  1034. it's holy,

  1035. just wrath.

  1036. Who put forward

  1037. Jesus?

  1038. God Himself.

  1039. Who is the one

  1040. who is perfectly

  1041. just punishing?

  1042. God Himself.

  1043. He offered

  1044. the offering Himself

  1045. to rescue us.

  1046. By His blood,

1047. He died on the cross

  1048. in our place

  1049. and He bore

1050. the full wrath of God.

  1051. God's wrath burned

  1052. white-hot in holiness

  1053. toward His Son

  1054. and He released

  1055. perfect vengeance

  1056. for our evil

  1057. on Jesus.

  1058. He is the righteousness

1059. of God in every way,

  1060. fulfilling our righteousness

  1061. and our righteousness

  1062. because when we trust

  1063. in Him,

  1064. we are forgiven.

  1065. We are credited

1066. as if we had never sinned

  1067. and our sins

1068. are taken away by Him.

  1069. He is our righteousness

  1070. in every way

  1071. and to Him

  1072. be the glory alone.

1073. and it is through simple faith

  1074. that righteousness

  1075. is from faith

  1076. for faith.

  1077. It's trusting

  1078. in another,

  1079. trusting in Him,

  1080. trusting in Christ

  1081. through simple faith.

  1082. What does that faith

  1083. look like?

  1084. Simply turning away

  1085. from our sin,

  1086. turning away

  1087. from self-righteousness

  1088. and trusting

  1089. in God's solution

  1090. for our unrighteousness

  1091. and for our sin.

  1092. This is the answer

1093. and this is the only answer

  1094. for the terrible predicament

  1095. of humanity.

1096. It is the most important thing

  1097. that you could tell

  1098. anybody you know

  1099. because their biggest need,

  1100. gravest concern,

  1101. ultimate,

  1102. ultimate issue

1103. is not how successful they are,

1104. not how their family's doing

1105. as important as that is,

1106. not how well they're being fed

1107. as important as that is.

  1108. All those things

  1109. have their place.

  1110. They're important

  1111. but the biggest issue

  1112. is they're a separation

1113. from God by their sin

1114. and the solution is Jesus.

1115. They are in dire need

  1116. of that solution.

  1117. We all are

  1118. and that solution

  1119. has been provided fully

  1120. in God through Christ

  1121. and is offered

  1122. to any and all.

  1123. So your coworkers,

  1124. your friends,

  1125. your neighbors,

  1126. your family members

  1127. and the countless tribes

  1128. throughout the globe

  1129. need this answer

1130. and he is the answer fully.

  1131. So stop thinking

  1132. that some other issue

  1133. and other answer

  1134. is more important.

1135. This is part of why

  1136. we're ashamed at times

1137. and it just can't be

  1138. that important.

1139. This person will be insulted

1140. or whatever it might be.

  1141. No, there's nothing

  1142. more important.

  1143. Their predicament

  1144. is their biggest issue

1145. and the answer of Christ

  1146. is their biggest solution

1147. that they need to hear

  1148. and know.

1149. And so this motivates Paul

  1150. because the gospel

1151. is the power of God.

  1152. The gospel

1153. is the power of God.

1154. There are lots of things

1155. that are the power of God.

1156. God's power is all around us.

1157. We see it in creation.

  1158. It's amazing to think

  1159. about the power

  1160. that's out there

  1161. and things like this.

  1162. And I have a science background

1163. and maybe this is why

  1164. I'm just geeky.

  1165. I just drive around

1166. at times and just think

1167. like that is a continuous

  1168. fusion explosion

  1169. in the sky.

  1170. It's massive

  1171. and it heats us

  1172. and we love it.

  1173. It's amazing.

  1174. So it's powerful.

  1175. There's lots of things

  1176. that are God's power

  1177. but the gospel

  1178. ultimately

1179. is the power of God.

  1180. the most important power

  1181. of God

  1182. for the salvation

  1183. of all who believe.

  1184. To the Jew first

1185. and also to the Greek

  1186. really for everybody

  1187. every type of person

  1188. every human

  1189. throughout the globe

  1190. throughout history

  1191. it is for them

  1192. the salvation

  1193. that God provides.

1194. It's the power of God

  1195. for their salvation

  1196. in every way

1197. from the penalty of sin

  1198. because Christ

  1199. takes on himself

  1200. that penalty.

  1201. No more penalty

1202. when we run to Jesus

  1203. and trust in him.

  1204. The believer

  1205. finds in Jesus

  1206. the penalty of sin

  1207. paid for

1208. but not just the penalty

1209. but the power of sin.

  1210. Paul is going to

  1211. go on in Romans

  1212. and talk about this.

  1213. The power of sin

  1214. is broken.

  1215. In chapter 5

  1216. he just talks about

1217. the wonder of the grace

  1218. of God

  1219. that the penalty

  1220. is taken care of

1221. and then in chapter 6

  1222. it says

  1223. and the reason that

1224. we don't just go out

  1225. and sin

  1226. is because

  1227. we are now united

  1228. with Christ.

  1229. We belong to him

  1230. through faith

  1231. and sin is broken

  1232. we don't want to

  1233. live that way anymore

  1234. and he's given us

  1235. his spirit

  1236. so sin doesn't have

  1237. to dominate us

  1238. anymore

  1239. we are free

  1240. in the gospel.

  1241. And then

  1242. chapter 8

  1243. he talks about

  1244. the reality

  1245. that ultimately

  1246. we are growing

1247. in our walk with God

  1248. and putting sin away

1249. and then there will be

1250. a day when we go

  1251. to be with him

  1252. in glory

  1253. and sin's presence

  1254. will be permanently

  1255. eradicated from our lives

1256. and then in the new creation.

  1257. This is the salvation

1258. that is ours in Jesus

  1259. and this is

  1260. the goodness

  1261. of God

  1262. this is the power

  1263. of God

  1264. for salvation.

  1265. The gospel

  1266. is powerful

  1267. it's the most

  1268. powerful thing

1269. that you can ever handle.

  1270. This room

  1271. is full

  1272. of miracles

  1273. full of those

  1274. who have been

  1275. raised from the dead.

1276. If you are a believer

  1277. you've been raised

  1278. from the dead

  1279. spiritually already.

  1280. How did it happen?

  1281. Well the spirit

  1282. of God came in

  1283. and did it

1284. but how did it happen?

  1285. You heard

  1286. the word

  1287. of truth.

  1288. You heard

  1289. the word

  1290. somebody

  1291. was unashamed

  1292. enough

  1293. to share it

  1294. with you

  1295. and you heard

  1296. this proclamation

  1297. of the forgiveness

  1298. of God

  1299. in Christ

  1300. and at that moment

  1301. something happened

  1302. that changed

  1303. your eternity.

  1304. Your dead soul

  1305. your dead spirit

  1306. was raised

  1307. to life.

  1308. You were given

  1309. a new heart

  1310. and you received

  1311. eternal life

  1312. at that moment

  1313. and that life

  1314. will never perish

  1315. and you now

  1316. are alive

  1317. and hearing the word

  1318. and responding

  1319. because of the

  1320. resurrection life

  1321. that's in you.

  1322. That's the power

  1323. of God.

  1324. It changed you

  1325. forever

  1326. and made it

  1327. so that you

  1328. could be forgiven

  1329. and be formed

  1330. in the image

  1331. of Christ

  1332. and have an

  1333. eternity ahead

  1334. with God.

  1335. That's power.

  1336. The greatest

  1337. miracle you can

  1338. experience

  1339. is that

  1340. because that miracle

  1341. leads to eternal life

  1342. and everything else.

  1343. The gospel

  1344. is the power

  1345. of God.

  1346. It is the most

  1347. powerful thing

  1348. you can ever handle

  1349. because as you share

  1350. God

  1351. and his infinite

  1352. power and glory

  1353. and his purpose

  1354. of using the word

  1355. works in those

  1356. who hear it

  1357. to bring life

  1358. and it's happening

  1359. and I'm sure

  1360. it's been happening here.

  1361. It's happening

  1362. all around the globe.

  1363. There are,

1364. we live in an amazing time

  1365. as the gospel

  1366. is going forward

1367. but yet so many more

  1368. need to hear it.

  1369. Lives are being changed,

  1370. cultures changed,

  1371. families changed

  1372. in the power

  1373. of the gospel.

  1374. So that's why

  1375. Paul's not ashamed

  1376. of it

  1377. because he knows

  1378. it's the power

  1379. of God

  1380. for the salvation

  1381. of everyone

  1382. who believes.

  1383. He knows

  1384. that in the gospel

  1385. is the righteousness

  1386. of God

  1387. his answer

  1388. for our problem

  1389. of unrighteousness

  1390. and the justice

  1391. of God,

  1392. the holy wrath

  1393. of God.

  1394. He knows

  1395. that that's

  1396. the ultimate truth

  1397. and that's

  1398. the ultimate thing

  1399. that others

  1400. need to know.

  1401. This gospel.

  1402. So,

  1403. why?

  1404. Why would we ever

  1405. be ashamed

  1406. of this gospel?

  1407. We need to

  1408. think about

  1409. these truths

  1410. by God's grace.

  1411. Have them affect us.

  1412. Now,

  1413. there's lots

  1414. of forgiveness

  1415. as infinite

  1416. forgiveness

  1417. in Christ's

  1418. atonement.

  1419. I'm forgiven

  1420. for my pathetic

  1421. answer to that guy.

  1422. The Lord is gracious

  1423. so I don't want you

  1424. to live in condemnation

  1425. but I want you

1426. as you hear the word

  1427. to be motivated.

  1428. Lord,

  1429. please help me

  1430. soak in these things

  1431. and propel me

  1432. to be unashamed

  1433. to share the gospel,

1434. to pray for those neighbors.

  1435. Don't,

  1436. now,

  1437. there are a thousand

  1438. qualifiers to this

  1439. whole message,

  1440. right?

  1441. So don't go up

  1442. to your neighbor

  1443. and be obnoxious.

  1444. I'm not saying that.

  1445. But,

  1446. but,

  1447. pray.

  1448. Pray for them.

  1449. Love them.

1450. Look to do good works

  1451. to bless them

  1452. because you've been blessed.

  1453. Not because you're doing,

  1454. like,

1455. if I can just share

1456. the gospel as a result.

  1457. We do good works

1458. because of who we are

  1459. in God.

  1460. But,

  1461. but through that,

  1462. pray for open doors

  1463. for the gospel

1464. and pray like Paul does

  1465. who is maybe

  1466. the chief unashamed person.

  1467. He still said,

  1468. please pray for boldness

  1469. for me.

  1470. Pray for boldness

  1471. for one another.

  1472. And then be bold.

  1473. Be bold

  1474. and share the gospel

  1475. in those awkward moments.

  1476. It's never,

  1477. you never get past

  1478. the awkwardness

  1479. because of these reasons.

  1480. Because it's the power

  1481. of God

  1482. for the salvation

  1483. of everyone

  1484. who believes.

  1485. In it,

  1486. the righteousness

  1487. of God is revealed

  1488. from faith for faith.

  1489. The righteous

  1490. shall live by faith.

1491. For the wrath of God

  1492. is revealed from heaven

  1493. against all ungodliness

  1494. and unrighteousness

  1495. of men

  1496. who by their unrighteousness

  1497. suppress the truth.

  1498. These are all reasons

  1499. to be unashamed.

  1500. So,

  1501. listen to the word.

  1502. Stop listening

  1503. to the rival gospels

  1504. that fill our ears,

  1505. the deceptions

  1506. that are out there,

  1507. the other diagnoses

  1508. that are there

  1509. that will always

  1510. diminish these truths.

  1511. There's lots of things

  1512. that are out there.

  1513. Lots of false gospels

  1514. of all sorts.

  1515. They come in

  1516. dressed as politics

1517. on the left and the right,

  1518. as social movements,

  1519. twisted virtues,

  1520. the American dream,

  1521. a Marxist utopia,

  1522. religions,

  1523. humanism and atheism

  1524. dressed in lab coats

  1525. to look really nice.

  1526. It's all foolishness.

  1527. Don't be fooled.

  1528. Don't be afraid.

  1529. Don't compromise.

1530. Don't let the upside down world

  1531. define your reality.

  1532. let the truth

  1533. of God's word

  1534. transform you

  1535. so that you

  1536. and I together

  1537. that we might be

  1538. unashamed

  1539. of the gospel.

  1540. Let's pray.

  1541. Thank you, Lord,

  1542. for your word.

  1543. And we need you

  1544. so much, Lord.

  1545. And those around us

  1546. need you so much.

1547. And you deserve the glory

  1548. of our bold proclamation.

  1549. So I pray you'd stir us

  1550. all up

  1551. that we would

  1552. not stop praying

  1553. and loving

  1554. and serving

  1555. and not stop looking

  1556. for every opportunity

  1557. to proclaim

  1558. the gospel,

  1559. the power of God

  1560. for salvation.

  1561. Use us,

  1562. oh Lord.

  1563. Fill us.

  1564. Lord,

  1565. I pray that there

  1566. be many

1567. who come to know you

  1568. as a result

  1569. of these truths

  1570. transforming us

  1571. for the glory

  1572. of your name.

  1573. You are worthy.

  1574. We love you, Lord.

1575. And we ask these things

  1576. in Christ's name.

  1577. Amen.

  1578. Amen.
