  1. My name is Ed. I see some new faces, so I'm one of the pastors here at Trinity Cambridge.

  2. We're going to continue on in our Matthew series, so if you would open up your Bibles with me.

  3. ! We're in Matthew 24, starting in verse 36, and then we'll read all the way to Matthew 25, verse 13.

    Matthew 25:13

  4. If you don't have a Bible and would like to use one, feel free to raise your hand. We'd be happy to grant you

  5. or give you a Bible for you to use at this time. I'll be reading from the English Standard Version.

  6. Again, starting from Matthew 24, verse 36.

    Matthew 24:36

  7. If you would bow your heads as we come before the Lord in prayer.

  8. Heavenly Father,

  9. Heavenly Father,

  10. who are we

  11. but dust

  12. here

  13. one day and gone tomorrow

  14. and yet you care for us. You are mindful of us.

  15. So much so that you give us your word.

  16. your word that exhorts us,

  17. addresses us,

  18. wakes us up from our slumber.

  19. And we pray that you would do that very thing by the power of your Holy Spirit.

  20. The indwelling Holy Spirit would open up our eyes, unlock our ears,

  21. so that we would hear how you are addressing us today in your word.

  22. That we are to stay awake, to stay ready for you are coming.

  23. You're coming soon.

  24. So I pray that though my words are weak,

  25. your power would manifest in cutting us to the heart

  26. and helping us, empowering us to live transformed lives.

  27. Lord, please do this for your glory.

  28. Help us.

  29. In Jesus' name we pray.

  30. Amen.

  31. If you are able,

  32. please rise to honor the reading of God's word.

  33. Again, starting from Matthew 24, 36.

  34. But concerning that day and hour,

  35. no one knows,

  36. not even the angels of heaven,

  37. nor the Son,

  38. but the Father only.

  39. For as were the days of Noah,

  40. so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

  41. For as in those days before the flood,

  42. they were eating and drinking,

  43. marrying and giving in marriage,

  44. until the day when Noah entered the ark.

  45. And they were unaware until the flood came

  46. and swept them all away.

  47. So will be the coming of the Son of Man.

  48. Then two men will be in the field.

  49. One will be taken and one left.

  50. Two women will be grinding at the mill.

  51. One will be taken and one left.

  52. Therefore, stay awake.

  53. For you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

  54. But know this,

  55. that if the master of the house had known

  56. in what part of the night the thief was coming,

  57. he would have stayed awake

  58. and would not have let his house be broken into.

  59. Therefore, you also must be ready,

  60. for the Son of Man is coming at an hour

  61. you do not expect.

  62. Who then is the faithful and wise servant

  63. whom his master has set over his household

  64. to give them their food at the proper time?

  65. Blessed is that servant whom his master

  66. will find so doing when he comes.

  67. Truly, I say to you,

  68. he will set him over all his possessions.

  69. But if that wicked servant says to himself,

  70. my master is delayed

  71. and begins to beat his fellow servants

  72. and eats and drinks with drunkards,

  73. the master of that servant will come on a day

  74. when he does not expect him.

  75. And at an hour he does not know

  76. and will cut him in pieces

  77. and put him with the hypocrites.

  78. In that place there will be weeping

  79. and gnashing of teeth.

  80. Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins

  81. who took their lamps

  82. and went to meet the bridegroom.

  83. Five of them were foolish

  84. and five were wise.

  85. For when the foolish took their lamps,

  86. they took no oil with them,

  87. but the wise took flasks of oil

  88. with their lamps.

  89. As the bridegroom was delayed,

  90. they all became drowsy and slept.

  91. But at midnight there was a cry,

  92. here is the bridegroom,

  93. come out to meet him.

  94. Then all those virgins rose

  95. and trimmed their lamps.

  96. And the foolish said to the wise,

  97. give us some of your oil

  98. for our lamps are going out.

  99. But the wise answered saying,

  100. since there will be not enough

  101. for us and for you,

  102. go rather to the dealers

  103. and buy for yourselves.

  104. And while they were going to buy,

  105. the bridegroom came

  106. and those who were ready

  107. went in with him

  108. into the marriage feast.

  109. And the door was shut.

  110. Afterward, the other virgins came

  111. also saying,

  112. Lord, Lord, open to us.

  113. But he answered,

  114. truly I say to you,

  115. I do not know you.

  116. Watch therefore,

  117. for you know neither the day

  118. nor the hour.

  119. This is God's holy

  120. and authoritative word.

  121. You may be seated.

  122. Have you ever noticed

  123. that the substance

  124. of your nightmares

  125. don't really change,

  126. but only merely

  127. the circumstances?

  128. It's pretty much

  129. the same nightmare,

  130. but they're distressed

  131. in different clothes.

  132. I don't have them often,

  133. but I've had this

  134. recurring nightmare

  135. ever since I was little.

  136. this recurring dream

  137. of being caught

  138. unprepared

  139. by unexpected circumstances.

  140. When I was in high school,

  141. I had the nightmare

  142. of walking into class

  143. only to find out

  144. that I have a huge major final

  145. that I wasn't prepared for,

  146. so I get a big fat F.

  147. When I was working

  148. my corporate job,

  149. it's going into a meeting

  150. only to find out

  151. that I'm supposed

  152. to give a huge presentation

  153. in front of the corporate

  154. bigwigs, right?

  155. The directors

  156. and the VPs,

  157. so it ends up

  158. me getting fired.

  159. And I kid you not,

  160. my wife and I

  161. were in the throes

  162. of wedding planning.

  163. I had the nightmare

  164. of getting married to her.

  165. Not that kind of nightmare, right?

  166. I wanted to get married to her,

  167. but it was a nightmare

  168. of going to the wedding,

  169. finding out that

  170. I don't have anything prepared.

  171. Like, where are the flowers?

  172. Where's the dress?

  173. Where's my own suit?

  174. I woke up in a cold sweat

  175. that night.

  176. But can there be anything

  177. more terrifying

  178. than to be prepared,

  179. unprepared,

  180. for the end of the world?

  181. It seems like that fear

  182. is in our cultural DNA, right?

  183. Endless movies and TV shows

  184. seem to be just harping

  185. on that one same fear.

  186. It's in the air.

  187. It's in our waters.

  188. As I was prepping

  189. for this sermon this week,

  190. I discovered a surprisingly

  191. large subculture

  192. of people who are getting ready

  193. for the apocalypse.

  194. Right?

  195. Readiness,

  196. apocalypse readiness groups,

  197. or preppers,

  198. as they call themselves.

  199. Right?

  200. They have websites,

  201. they have Reddit threads,

  202. they have even local chapters

  203. that meet throughout

  204. the United States,

  205. which you can go

  206. and join today.

  207. All for the purpose

  208. of helping one another

  209. to get ready

  210. for the end of the world.

  211. They think that maybe

  212. the sun will blow up,

  213. or there actually will be

  214. a zombie apocalypse.

  215. But whatever they're preparing for,

  216. they're packing out bug-out bags,

  217. they're prepping

  218. their fallout bunkers,

  219. all to get ready

  220. for this cataclysmic event.

  221. It might sound ridiculous,

  222. and certainly in our culture,

  223. they're sometimes

  224. the butt of our jokes,

  225. but ironically,

  226. these preppers

  227. get something right.

  228. They get something right

  229. to get ready

  230. to the end of the world.

  231. Something that we all

  232. need to get ready for.

  233. The only problem

  234. is that they profoundly

  235. misunderstand

  236. how to get ready for it.

  237. What about you?

  238. Are you ready

  239. for the end of the world?

  240. Do you know how

  241. to get ready for it?

  242. In this passage this morning,

  243. Jesus tells us

  244. that the end of the world

  245. is in fact coming.

  246. Why?

  247. Because he is coming.

  248. And he can return

  249. at any point,

  250. in 10 minutes,

  251. or in 10 millennia.

  252. You do realize,

  253. I might not actually

  254. get to finish this sermon.

  255. He is coming,

  256. and when he does,

  257. he will judge

  258. each and every single person,

  259. yes,

  260. including you,

  261. for your readiness.

  262. So we need

  263. to get ready.

  264. So that's the main point

  265. of my sermon today.

  266. Expect

  267. the unexpected return

  268. of Christ.

  269. And in turn,

  270. I'll talk about

  271. four points

  272. that this passage

  273. addresses.

  274. First,

  275. the hour

  276. that is hidden

  277. from us,

  278. the return

  279. that is certain

  280. for us,

  281. the readiness

  282. that is required

  283. of us,

  284. and finally,

  285. the door

  286. that is closing

  287. on us.

  288. By way of reminder,

  289. we're in the middle

  290. of the Olivet Discourse

  291. that started

  292. from the disciples'

  293. question

  294. in chapter 24,

  295. verse 3,

  296. which reads,

  297. tell us,

  298. when will these things be,

  299. and what will be

  300. the sign of your coming

  301. and of the end

  302. of the age?

  303. Last week,

  304. Sean preached

  305. about how Jesus

  306. answers this

  307. part one

  308. of the question

  309. where he addresses

  310. the beginning

  311. of the end,

  312. and this week,

  313. Jesus moves on

  314. to now part two,

  315. the end

  316. of the end.

  317. And it's signified

  318. by a clear transition,

  319. these two words

  320. right in the beginning

  321. of our passage,

  322. but concerning,

  323. but concerning.

  324. Right?

  325. Earlier in the

  326. book of Matthew,

  327. Jesus,

  328. and also later,

  329. the Apostle Paul,

  330. they use this

  331. exact same phrase,

  332. these exact same words

  333. to shift topics.

  334. So we have a clear

  335. paragraph break here.

  336. Jesus is moving on

  337. now to address

  338. the topic of the

  339. end of the age,

  340. or to put it

  341. in more biblical terms,

  342. the day of the Lord.

  343. About this day,

  344. Prophet Joel

  345. proclaims,

  346. let all the inhabitants

  347. of the land

  348. tremble,

  349. for the day

  350. of the Lord

  351. is coming.

  352. It is near,

  353. a day of darkness

  354. and gloom.

  355. The day of the Lord

  356. is great

  357. and very awesome.

  358. Who

  359. can endure it?

  360. So,

  361. if this day,

  362. the last day

  363. of the history

  364. of the world

  365. as we know it,

  366. is fast approaching,

  367. it's understandable

  368. that the disciples,

  369. they ask their

  370. respected rabbi,

  371. when will this

  372. fateful day be?

  373. Because if they know

  374. the timing,

  375. then,

  376. of course,

  377. we can get ready

  378. for it appropriately.

  379. And during that time

  380. in particular,

  381. this topic

  382. is a hot button topic.

  383. People are talking

  384. about it,

  385. wrestling with it,

  386. giving their ideas,

  387. when it could be,

  388. with no one being able

  389. to give a compelling answer.

  390. But surely Jesus,

  391. surely Jesus would know.

  392. But what Jesus says

  393. must have surely

  394. shocked his disciples.

  395. Concerning the timing

  396. of the day

  397. and the hour,

  398. not a single soul knows.

  399. Nor will we ever know,

  400. though many have tried.

  401. Take Edgar Weisant,

  402. who was a former

  403. NASA engineer,

  404. who wrote a book

  405. called 88 Reasons

  406. Why the Raptures

  407. Will Be in 1988.

  408. 1988.

  409. That book did not age well.

  410. Or Harold Camping,

  411. who predicted

  412. that the return of Christ

  413. will be in 2011.

  414. His followers

  415. were so convinced

  416. that this is the day

  417. that he's going to return.

  418. So they sell

  419. all that they have

  420. to put up billboards

  421. and travel the world

  422. and tell everybody

  423. that he's returning.

  424. Not the wisest

  425. financial decision.

  426. Even the Jehovah's Witnesses,

  427. they've predicted

  428. the end of the world

  429. four times already.

  430. Already in 1914,

  431. 1918,

  432. 1925,

  433. and 1975.

  434. Every generation

  435. has had people

  436. who think

  437. that they've cracked

  438. the code.

  439. And every single person

  440. ends up getting it wrong.

  441. Not a single person

  442. will know the day.

  443. Not even the glorious angels know.

  444. Most astonishingly,

  445. Jesus openly declares

  446. that he doesn't even know.

  447. The Son doesn't even know.

  448. But only the Father knows.

  449. This is the first

  450. and only time

  451. in all the Gospels

  452. where Jesus confesses

  453. Jesus confesses

  454. ignorance to a question.

  455. Let reality sink in

  456. this miracle-performing,

  457. death-defying,

  458. bread-multiplying Messiah,

  459. who has answered

  460. every single thorny question

  461. from the scribes

  462. and the Pharisees

  463. with astonishing wisdom.

  464. He is now confessing ignorance.

  465. That must have

  466. floored the disciples.

  467. Even more so,

  468. maybe for us today,

  469. who have a clear

  470. theological picture

  471. of who Jesus is.

  472. He's not just

  473. the Son of Man,

  474. but he is

  475. the eternal Son of God.

  476. the second person

  477. of the Trinity

  478. who sustains

  479. all of creation

  480. by the mere power

  481. of his word.

  482. How could he be ignorant

  483. if he really is

  484. the tri-omni-God,

  485. the omnipresent,

  486. omnipotent,

  487. and most relevant

  488. to our discussion,

  489. omniscient God?

  490. Now, this verse

  491. has ignited major debate

  492. throughout church history

  493. with some

  494. landing on

  495. the heretical belief

  496. that Jesus,

  497. the Son of God,

  498. is actually a lesser God

  499. than God the Father.

  500. But we need not come

  501. to that conclusion.

  502. The answer, I think,

  503. simply lies in the fact

  504. that Jesus was both

  505. miraculously

  506. and mysteriously

  507. fully God

  508. and fully human.

  509. Not 50% God,

  510. not 50% human,

  511. not 90-10,

  512. but 100% God

  513. and 100% human.

  514. Later,

  515. in Philippians 2,

  516. Paul helpfully

  517. describes the mystery

  518. of the incarnation

  519. like this.

  520. Though Jesus

  521. was in the form

  522. of God,

  523. he did not account

  524. equality with God

  525. a thing to be grasped,

  526. but emptied himself

  527. by taking the form

  528. of a servant

  529. being born

  530. in the likeness

  531. of men.

  532. consider again

  533. that Jesus is

  534. the tri-omni God.

  535. He really is.

  536. But while he is

  537. the omnipresent God,

  538. at the same time,

  539. human Jesus

  540. limits himself

  541. to one place

  542. at one time.

  543. While he is

  544. the omnipotent God,

  545. he really is.

  546. At the same time,

  547. in his incarnation,

  548. human Jesus

  549. gets tired,

  550. hungry.

  551. I think we maybe

  552. tend to understand

  553. those two

  554. a little bit more easily,

  555. but I think this verse

  556. adds another dimension

  557. just to the great

  558. condescension of Christ.

  559. We mustn't forget

  560. that while he is

  561. the omniscient God,

  562. at the same time

  563. in his incarnation,

  564. Jesus is still human

  565. with human limitations.

  566. Jesus increased

  567. in wisdom

  568. and in stature,

  569. as Luke writes

  570. in Luke 2.52,

  571. and in this particular

  572. instance,

  573. he doesn't know.

  574. He doesn't know

  575. the timing

  576. of the consummation

  577. of the kingdom.

  578. Why did he put

  579. these things aside?

  580. It's because

  581. when the eternal

  582. word of God

  583. became flesh,

  584. dwelt among us,

  585. he walked among us

  586. not as a super-powered

  587. demigod,

  588. but as a genuine,

  589. weak,

  590. ignorant man.

  591. All so that he can

  592. truly sympathize

  593. with our weaknesses.

  594. Jesus knows

  595. what it's like

  596. to be tempted,

  597. what it's like

  598. to be saddened

  599. by tragedy and loss,

  600. what it's like

  601. not knowing the future.

  602. Ignorance

  603. is essential

  604. to the human experience.

  605. To be God

  606. is to know things.

  607. It's to know all things.

  608. To be human

  609. is to not know things.

  610. If Jesus

  611. didn't come

  612. as fully human,

  613. then what

  614. meaningful sense

  615. would Jesus

  616. be our genuine

  617. representative,

  618. be the new Adam?

  619. If his feet

  620. never soiled the ground

  621. or if eyelids

  622. never grew tired

  623. or if he never

  624. had to say,

  625. I don't know.

  626. Theologian

  627. Donald McLeod,

  628. he put it this way,

  629. Jesus had learned

  630. to obey

  631. without knowing

  632. all the facts

  633. and to believe

  634. without being

  635. in possession

  636. of full information.

  637. He had to forego

  638. the comfort

  639. which omniscience

  640. would sometimes

  641. have brought.

  642. While omniscience

  643. was a luxury

  644. always within

  645. the reach

  646. of Jesus,

  647. he chose

  648. not to grasp

  649. at it,

  650. to grasp

  651. at equality

  652. with God

  653. in that moment

  654. to be

  655. our true

  656. mediator

  657. between God

  658. and sinful man.

  659. consider then

  660. the amazing

  661. humility

  662. of Jesus

  663. that he displays

  664. when he declares

  665. that he doesn't

  666. know something

  667. that he could know.

  668. Consider then

  669. the amazing

  670. arrogance

  671. and pride

  672. of man

  673. who declares

  674. he knows something

  675. that he could

  676. never know.

  677. We are

  678. an information

  679. obsessed

  680. culture.

  681. A million

  682. Google hits

  683. mere seconds.

  684. Now the power

  685. of AI

  686. at our fingertips.

  687. We even gossip

  688. because we want

  689. to know

  690. information.

  691. We crave

  692. information.

  693. All so that

  694. we can say

  695. we know

  696. things,

  697. right?

  698. We love

  699. the power

  700. and the security

  701. that information

  702. gives us.

  703. And God

  704. certainly has

  705. given us

  706. the ability

  707. to learn

  708. and know

  709. many things.

  710. but there

  711. are some

  712. things that

  713. God will

  714. keep us

  715. forever in

  716. the dark

  717. and particularly

  718. the timing

  719. of his return.

  720. Why?

  721. To keep us

  722. humble

  723. and to keep

  724. us faithfully

  725. waiting for

  726. his return.

  727. But here's

  728. what God

  729. has not

  730. kept from

  731. us.

  732. Even while

  733. the hour

  734. of the return

  735. is hidden

  736. from us,

  737. we do know

  738. with certainty

  739. that he will

  740. in fact

  741. return.

  742. How do

  743. we know

  744. this?

  745. Jesus

  746. then points

  747. to Noah.

  748. In our

  749. passage this

  750. morning,

  751. have you

  752. noticed that

  753. all the

  754. examples that

  755. Jesus gives

  756. are merely

  757. figurative?

  758. All but

  759. one.

  760. Noah is

  761. the one

  762. historic

  763. example that

  764. will prove

  765. this day

  766. will in fact

  767. come.

  768. If you're

  769. unfamiliar with

  770. the story of

  771. Noah in

  772. Genesis 6,

  773. just a few

  774. chapters after

  775. God creates

  776. the world

  777. and mankind,

  778. his heart

  779. breaks because

  780. he sees that

  781. every intention

  782. of the thoughts

  783. of man's

  784. heart was

  785. only evil

  786. continually.

  787. Just and

  788. holy God

  789. decides to

  790. wipe out

  791. all of

  792. humanity as

  793. a judgment

  794. on the

  795. earth,

  796. but not

  797. before commanding

  798. righteous Noah

  799. to build an

  800. enormous ark

  801. of wood so

  802. that he,

  803. his family,

  804. and the chosen

  805. animals would

  806. be able to

  807. survive the

  808. deluge.

  809. this ark

  810. that stretched

  811. one and a

  812. half football

  813. fields and

  814. was as tall

  815. as a four

  816. story building,

  817. it was this

  818. titanic

  819. jumbotron,

  820. right,

  821. displaying for

  822. all to see

  823. the warnings

  824. of the impending

  825. judgments of

  826. God.

  827. But tragically,

  828. not a single

  829. soul heeded

  830. this warning.

  831. Instead,

  832. they continued

  833. to live their

  834. lives as they

  835. saw fit,

  836. eating,

  837. drinking,

  838. and marrying

  839. right until

  840. their watery

  841. graves.

  842. And just as

  843. the flood

  844. that wiped

  845. out humanity

  846. is a

  847. historical fact,

  848. it really

  849. did happen,

  850. Christ too

  851. will in fact

  852. return.

  853. Yet for

  854. all of

  855. church history,

  856. this unbelieving

  857. world has

  858. jeered and

  859. mocked us,

  860. have they not,

  861. for our silly

  862. and fanatical

  863. beliefs.

  864. Especially in

  865. recent years,

  866. right,

  867. don't believe

  868. me?

  869. Then just go

  870. to the street,

  871. just like the

  872. team did in

  873. London.

  874. Just go to the

  875. street and tell

  876. them that Jesus

  877. is going to

  878. return at any

  879. point,

  880. that the world

  881. is coming to

  882. an end.

  883. You'll see it

  884. written right on

  885. their face,

  886. they're going to

  887. think that we're

  888. straight up

  889. wacko.

  890. Maybe you even

  891. feel a little bit

  892. embarrassed by

  893. those beliefs.

  894. They'll attack us

  895. and say,

  896. you guys have

  897. been saying that

  898. Jesus is

  899. returning for

  900. 2,000 years.

  901. Isn't it time,

  902. guys, to give

  903. it up?

  904. But these

  905. attacks are

  906. nothing new.

  907. Even the

  908. apostle Peter

  909. and his

  910. churches had

  911. to deal with

  912. it.

  913. We read in

  914. 2 Peter 3,

  915. they will say,

  916. where is the

  917. promise of his

  918. coming?

  919. For ever since

  920. the fathers fell

  921. asleep, all

  922. things are

  923. continuing as

  924. they were from

  925. the beginning

  926. of creation.

  927. And how does

  928. Peter respond?

  929. He draws on

  930. the same piece

  931. of evidence

  932. that Jesus

  933. does.

  934. He points

  935. to Noah.

  936. For they

  937. deliberately

  938. overlook this

  939. fact that

  940. the world

  941. that then

  942. existed was

  943. deluged with

  944. water and

  945. perished.

  946. But by the

  947. same word,

  948. the heavens

  949. and the

  950. earth that

  951. now existed

  952. are stored

  953. up,

  954. fire being

  955. kept until

  956. the day of

  957. judgment and

  958. destruction of

  959. the ungodly.

  960. Both Jesus

  961. and Peter

  962. point to the

  963. past example

  964. of Noah

  965. for the

  966. future promise,

  967. for the

  968. assurance that

  969. he will in

  970. fact come and

  971. bring judgment.

  972. And when he

  973. comes, we don't

  974. know when he

  975. will come, but

  976. we do know how

  977. he will come.

  978. It will be

  979. universal and

  980. it will be

  981. sudden.

  982. Just as the

  983. flood came and

  984. wiped them all

  985. away, when that

  986. day of judgment

  987. comes, rest

  988. assured that not

  989. a single soul

  990. will miss it.

  991. when Jesus

  992. personally, bodily

  993. returns on the

  994. heavenly clouds,

  995. every eye will

  996. see him, even

  997. those who

  998. pierced him, and

  999. all tribes of

  1000. the earth will

  1001. wail on account

  1002. of him.

  1003. From the

  1004. greatest to

  1005. the least.

  1006. Even the

  1007. seemingly

  1008. inconsequential

  1009. nameless two

  1010. men in the

  1011. field, or the

  1012. nameless women

  1013. at the mill in

  1014. verses 40 to

  1015. 41, they're

  1016. just doing

  1017. normal,

  1018. ordinary,

  1019. everyday chores.

  1020. They, too, will

  1021. be judged.

  1022. What happens to

  1023. these two pairs

  1024. is representative

  1025. of what will

  1026. happen to the

  1027. whole of

  1028. humanity.

  1029. On that day,

  1030. though the two

  1031. might look

  1032. exactly the same

  1033. on the outside,

  1034. right on paper,

  1035. they're doing the

  1036. same work,

  1037. in the same

  1038. time, in the

  1039. same place,

  1040. the inner reality

  1041. is that they

  1042. are worlds

  1043. apart.

  1044. For one is

  1045. a child of

  1046. God, and

  1047. one is a

  1048. child of

  1049. Satan.

  1050. When Christ

  1051. returns, he

  1052. will reveal the

  1053. invisible spiritual

  1054. chasm that

  1055. lies between

  1056. them by taking

  1057. the one and

  1058. leaving the

  1059. other.

  1060. And when

  1061. Jesus returns,

  1062. secondly, he

  1063. will come

  1064. suddenly.

  1065. People will be

  1066. caught in the

  1067. middle of their

  1068. work day,

  1069. working in the

  1070. field, grinding

  1071. at the mill,

  1072. still dressed in

  1073. their sweaty

  1074. clothes.

  1075. They won't have

  1076. time, we don't

  1077. have time to go

  1078. home and get

  1079. ready for Jesus.

  1080. And to hammer

  1081. home that

  1082. suddenness in

  1083. which he comes,

  1084. Jesus goes as

  1085. far as to

  1086. compare it to

  1087. a thief in the

  1088. night.

  1089. What is a

  1090. thief's greatest

  1091. asset?

  1092. It's not his

  1093. strength, maybe

  1094. it's not even

  1095. his speed, but

  1096. it is simply

  1097. the element of

  1098. surprise.

  1099. Thieves come

  1100. in at the

  1101. moment you

  1102. least expect

  1103. them.

  1104. And in

  1105. America, it's

  1106. more common

  1107. for thieves to

  1108. break in and

  1109. steal during the

  1110. day than at

  1111. night because

  1112. they know that

  1113. we're all at

  1114. work.

  1115. So Jesus

  1116. compares himself

  1117. to a thief,

  1118. obviously not to

  1119. indict himself as

  1120. a lawbreaker,

  1121. but to stress

  1122. the sudden,

  1123. surprising manner

  1124. in which he

  1125. will come.

  1126. In fact, he

  1127. even explicitly

  1128. says that the

  1129. thief will come

  1130. at an hour you

  1131. do not expect.

  1132. Therefore, the

  1133. main exhortation

  1134. is to stay

  1135. awake, stay

  1136. ready at all

  1137. times, for you

  1138. never know when

  1139. the thief will

  1140. come.

  1141. During travel,

  1142. on behalf of a

  1143. Roman century back

  1144. then, a soldier,

  1145. he would keep a

  1146. certain watch in

  1147. the middle of

  1148. the night for a

  1149. couple of

  1150. hours while all

  1151. the other

  1152. soldiers would

  1153. sleep, catch

  1154. up on rest, and

  1155. he would have to

  1156. stay awake looking

  1157. out for bad

  1158. actors.

  1159. When his watch

  1160. was over, then

  1161. the next would

  1162. come to take

  1163. his place, and

  1164. they would just

  1165. rinse and repeat.

  1166. Hear this quote

  1167. from Charles

  1168. Spurgeon,

  1169. brethren, we

  1170. have succeeded a

  1171. long line of

  1172. watchmen.

  1173. Since the days of

  1174. our Lord, when he

  1175. sent out the chosen

  1176. twelve to stand

  1177. upon the citadel and

  1178. tell how the night

  1179. waxed or waved, how

  1180. have the watchers

  1181. come and gone?

  1182. Our God has

  1183. changed the watchers,

  1184. but he has kept

  1185. the watch.

  1186. He still sets

  1187. watchmen on the

  1188. walls of Zion who

  1189. must watch for the

  1190. coming of their

  1191. master.

  1192. friends, it's our

  1193. watch now.

  1194. It is our

  1195. generation's turn to

  1196. watch for the

  1197. Lord, to stay

  1198. awake and get

  1199. ready.

  1200. So heeding this

  1201. clarion call, where

  1202. must our eyes turn

  1203. then?

  1204. Upward,

  1205. heavenward.

1206. In no way can we

  1207. properly watch for

  1208. the Lord who will

  1209. come on the

  1210. heavenly clouds

  1211. if our eyes are

  1212. earthbound and

  1213. downcast?

  1214. This is a

  1215. contradiction in

  1216. terms.

  1217. It's like looking

  1218. left and right at

  1219. the same time.

  1220. But our eyes are

  1221. cast earthbound

  1222. because we so

  1223. easily get

  1224. distracted by

  1225. competing loves

  1226. and desires here

  1227. on earth.

  1228. The lesser

  1229. things of earth

  1230. sparkle brighter

  1231. in our eyes,

  1232. do they not,

  1233. than the golden

  1234. streets of heaven?

  1235. There's too much

  1236. in this life that

  1237. you want to buy,

  1238. to see,

  1239. to do,

  1240. to taste.

  1241. Too much you want

  1242. to experience.

  1243. Hear Jesus' words in

  1244. Luke's parallel passage,

  1245. in Luke 17.

  1246. On that day,

1247. let the one who is on

  1248. the housetop,

1249. with his goods in the

  1250. house,

  1251. not come down,

  1252. to take them away.

  1253. And likewise,

1254. let the one who is in

  1255. the field not turn

  1256. back.

  1257. friends,

  1258. what use are the

  1259. things that we amass

  1260. down here,

  1261. up there?

  1262. Let your eyes

  1263. leave the fleeting

  1264. glories of this

  1265. earth and turn

  1266. upward.

  1267. Or maybe your eyes

  1268. are earthbound,

  1269. they're not

  1270. heavenward,

  1271. because of our

  1272. endless earthly

  1273. worries and

  1274. anxieties and

  1275. distractions.

  1276. distractions.

  1277. I need to

  1278. progress in my

  1279. career,

  1280. I need to

  1281. save for a

  1282. house,

  1283. I need to

  1284. get ready for

  1285. retirement.

  1286. And are my

  1287. kids progressing

  1288. in the way they

  1289. should?

  1290. We forget to

  1291. consider that

  1292. Jesus can return

  1293. today because we

  1294. are so worried

  1295. about tomorrow.

  1296. Or maybe our

  1297. distractions are

  1298. more subtle than

  1299. that.

  1300. We wake up,

  1301. go to work,

  1302. come home,

  1303. sleep,

  1304. rinse and

  1305. repeat for

  1306. 40 years.

  1307. Has that

  1308. monotony

  1309. lulled you to

  1310. sleep?

  1311. Has the

  1312. bright blue

  1313. hue of your

  1314. phone and

  1315. the endless

  1316. swiping lulled

  1317. you to sleep?

  1318. Brothers and

  1319. sisters,

  1320. wake up.

  1321. Take your

  1322. place at the

  1323. watch post.

  1324. It is our

  1325. time, our

  1326. turn to watch

  1327. for the Lord

  1328. now.

  1329. brothers and

  1330. sisters, how

  1331. often do you

  1332. remember that

  1333. Christ can

  1334. literally return

  1335. at any time?

  1336. I confess I

  1337. don't reflect on

  1338. it nearly

  1339. enough.

  1340. When was the

  1341. last time that

  1342. you started your

  1343. day?

  1344. Not by worrying

  1345. about your to-do

  1346. list and what you

  1347. have to get done,

  1348. but simply

  1349. remembering that

  1350. this day could

  1351. actually be the

  1352. day.

  1353. It could be

  1354. today.

  1355. It's possibly

  1356. one of the

  1357. most important

  1358. transformative

  1359. habits that we

  1360. cultivate to

  1361. remember this

  1362. regularly as we

  1363. watch and we

  1364. wait for the

  1365. Lord to return.

  1366. But watching for

  1367. the Lord is not

  1368. a mere

  1369. idleness.

  1370. Jesus' next

  1371. parable sheds

  1372. light on what

  1373. readiness actually

  1374. looks like when

  1375. he compares and

  1376. contrasts two

  1377. kinds of

  1378. servants.

  1379. The first

  1380. servant is a

  1381. model example

  1382. of readiness

  1383. for the

  1384. master return.

  1385. Notice that he

  1386. doesn't just sit

  1387. idle, twiddling

  1388. his thumbs,

  1389. sitting around

  1390. the window waiting

  1391. for the master

  1392. to return.

  1393. He doesn't

  1394. waste his time

  1395. trying to guess

  1396. when the master

  1397. will return,

  1398. obsessing over

  1399. biblical numerology,

  1400. looking at the

  1401. stars and trying

  1402. to map out

  1403. astrology.

  1404. astrology, when

  1405. he is bestowed

  1406. with a task to

  1407. provide for the

  1408. household, he

  1409. simply gets to

  1410. work.

  1411. His waiting for

  1412. the master is

  1413. expressed in

  1414. simple, ordinary

  1415. obedience to the

  1416. commands that he

  1417. has received.

  1418. He is reliable,

  1419. consistent,

  1420. trustworthy.

  1421. So when the

  1422. master of the

  1423. house returns, he

  1424. finds a thriving

  1425. household put in

  1426. order, made

  1427. possible by the

  1428. diligent work of

  1429. the servant.

  1430. As a result, the

  1431. master then grants

  1432. the servant a

  1433. major promotion,

  1434. sets him over all

  1435. his possessions.

  1436. He who is

  1437. faithful over little

  1438. will be faithful

  1439. over much.

  1440. In direct

  1441. contrast, Jesus

  1442. paints the picture

  1443. of a wicked

  1444. servant who

  1445. arrogantly assumes

  1446. that the master

  1447. is delayed.

  1448. You see exactly

  1449. what kind of man

  1450. he is, right?

  1451. For the person

  1452. you are when

  1453. nobody is

  1454. watching is

  1455. actually the

  1456. person you

  1457. are.

  1458. The man proves

  1459. his wickedness by

  1460. then taking this

  1461. opportunity without

  1462. supervision to

  1463. indulge in sin,

  1464. beating his

  1465. fellow servants,

  1466. people who are

  1467. his peers, his

  1468. equals, and

  1469. eating and drinking

  1470. with drunkards.

  1471. to this wicked

  1472. man.

  1473. The master will

  1474. come on a day

  1475. that he does

  1476. not expect,

  1477. inflict a

  1478. terrible punishment.

  1479. Using graphic

  1480. language that's

  1481. meant to shock

  1482. the sleepy

  1483. awake, Jesus

  1484. declares that

  1485. this wicked

  1486. servant will be

  1487. cut in pieces.

  1488. And as

  1489. gruesome as

  1490. that sounds,

  1491. it's not even

  1492. the worst

  1493. part.

  1494. For this

  1495. punishment

  1496. signifies so

  1497. much more

  1498. than just a

  1499. physical death.

  1500. After he's

  1501. cut in pieces,

  1502. he's thrown

  1503. into the place

  1504. with the

  1505. hypocrites,

  1506. probably the

  1507. scribes and

  1508. the Pharisees,

  1509. as we read

  1510. this in the

  1511. context of

  1512. Matthew,

  1513. where there

  1514. is weeping

  1515. and gnashing

  1516. of teeth.

  1517. How can

  1518. someone weep

  1519. and gnash

  1520. their teeth

  1521. when they've

  1522. been cut up

  1523. in pieces?

  1524. It only

  1525. makes sense

  1526. if Jesus

  1527. is not

  1528. merely speaking

  1529. about a

  1530. physical death,

  1531. but a

  1532. greater,

  1533. more fearsome

  1534. spiritual

  1535. death.

  1536. And we've

  1537. seen this

  1538. kind of

  1539. language in

  1540. Matthew before

  1541. that the

  1542. place of

  1543. weeping

  1544. and gnashing

  1545. of teeth

  1546. signifies the

  1547. eternal,

  1548. unquenchable

  1549. fire of

  1550. hell.

  1551. So by

  1552. both of

  1553. the incentive

  1554. of reward

  1555. and the

  1556. spur of

  1557. punishment,

  1558. Jesus teaches

  1559. us how we

  1560. are to get

  1561. ready,

  1562. how we're

  1563. to get ready

  1564. for the

  1565. master's

  1566. return.

  1567. And that

  1568. readiness

  1569. certainly has

  1570. nothing to

  1571. do with

  1572. irreverent

  1573. silly myths,

  1574. neither is

  1575. it frantic,

  1576. fanatic acts

  1577. like so many

  1578. cults end up

  1579. taking.

  1580. On the one

  1581. hand,

  1582. it's

  1583. positively,

  1584. it's simple,

  1585. consistent

  1586. faithfulness to

  1587. the tasks that

  1588. God has called

  1589. you to.

  1590. going to

  1591. the office

  1592. day after

  1593. day,

  1594. honoring the

  1595. Lord by

  1596. putting your

  1597. best work,

  1598. raising your

  1599. kids,

  1600. exercising

  1601. patience and

  1602. love day

  1603. after day.

  1604. And on the

  1605. other hand,

  1606. negatively put,

  1607. it's fleeing

  1608. from sin and

  1609. keeping a

  1610. close watch

  1611. over your

  1612. soul,

  1613. knowing that

  1614. the heart

  1615. is desperately

  1616. sick,

  1617. and that

  1618. we are so

  1619. prone to

  1620. forget that

  1621. he is coming.

  1622. We are so

  1623. prone to

  1624. wander.

  1625. We do

  1626. well to

  1627. commit

  1628. ourselves to

  1629. prayerful,

  1630. careful,

  1631. watchfulness.

  1632. Here's a

  1633. helpful definition

  1634. of watchfulness

  1635. by Puritan

  1636. Thomas Brooks.

  1637. Watchfulness

  1638. is a

  1639. continual,

  1640. careful

  1641. observing of

  1642. our ways

  1643. in all the

  1644. passages and

  1645. turnings of

  1646. our life

  1647. that we

  1648. still keep

  1649. close to

  1650. the written

  1651. word of

  1652. God.

  1653. In other

  1654. words,

  1655. readiness for

  1656. the end of

  1657. the world,

  1658. it looks like

  1659. godliness and

  1660. holiness.

  1661. Peter says so

  1662. in that same

  1663. chapter that we've

  1664. been reading from,

  1665. from 2 Peter 3.

  1666. Since all these

  1667. are thus to be

  1668. dissolved,

  1669. what sort of

  1670. people ought

  1671. you to be in

  1672. lives of

  1673. holiness and

  1674. godliness,

  1675. waiting for

  1676. and hastening

  1677. for the

  1678. coming of

  1679. the day of

  1680. God.

  1681. So,

  1682. watching,

  1683. watching for

  1684. the Lord's

  1685. return and

  1686. watching your

  1687. own soul,

  1688. they're not a

  1689. contradiction.

  1690. They're not

  1691. competing efforts.

  1692. In fact,

  1693. we watch for

  1694. Christ by,

  1695. by watching

  1696. our own

  1697. souls.

  1698. Here is a

  1699. simple question.

  1700. What do you

  1701. want to be caught

  1702. doing when the

  1703. Lord returns?

  1704. What do you

  1705. want to be

  1706. caught doing

  1707. when the

  1708. Lord returns?

  1709. So,

  1710. do only

  1711. those things

  1712. in the right

  1713. manner that

  1714. you'd hope to

  1715. be caught

  1716. doing,

  1717. and simply

  1718. avoid all

  1719. the rest.

  1720. So,

  1721. the servant

  1722. parable,

  1723. it shows us

  1724. what happens

  1725. when the

  1726. master arrives

  1727. sooner than

  1728. expected.

  1729. Now,

  1730. in this last

  1731. parable,

  1732. Jesus shows

  1733. us something

  1734. equally sobering.

  1735. Whatever,

  1736. what happens

  1737. is when

  1738. he arrives

  1739. later,

  1740. later than

  1741. expected.

  1742. This parable

  1743. focuses on

  1744. a group of

  1745. ten virgins

  1746. during the

  1747. wedding.

  1748. It can be

  1749. hard to place

  1750. ourselves in

  1751. this parable

  1752. because first

  1753. century Palestinian

  1754. weddings,

  1755. they're radically

  1756. different from

  1757. our weddings

  1758. today.

  1759. The limited

  1760. info that we

  1761. have,

  1762. customarily after

  1763. the legal

  1764. nuptials in

  1765. the bride's

  1766. home,

  1767. the bride

  1768. group would

  1769. then walk

  1770. over to

  1771. the great

  1772. banquet at

  1773. his home,

  1774. accompanied by

  1775. a group of

  1776. young,

  1777. unmarried

  1778. women who

  1779. are these

  1780. virgins in

  1781. this parable.

  1782. I think the

  1783. closest equivalent

  1784. might be like

  1785. our weddings

  1786. today if the

  1787. wedding ceremony

  1788. and the wedding

  1789. reception were in

  1790. two separate

  1791. places and you

  1792. have to travel

  1793. in between

  1794. them.

  1795. But unlike

  1796. our weddings,

  1797. there was no

  1798. set time that

  1799. things would

  1800. end.

  1801. Our time

  1802. obsessed culture

  1803. could never

  1804. deal with

  1805. this.

  1806. And that

  1807. culture back

  1808. then to the

  1809. question,

  1810. how long will

  1811. it take?

  1812. The only right

  1813. answer would

  1814. be as long

  1815. as it takes,

  1816. as long as

  1817. it needs to.

  1818. That meant

  1819. the group of

  1820. women needed

  1821. to prepare

  1822. well.

  1823. They needed

  1824. to prepare

  1825. well for

  1826. their one

  1827. and only job

  1828. to accompany

  1829. the bridegroom

  1830. and to light

  1831. his path

  1832. home.

  1833. But out of

  1834. the ten,

  1835. only five

  1836. are wise

  1837. enough to

  1838. prepare oil

  1839. with their

  1840. lamps,

  1841. just in

  1842. case that

  1843. the bridegroom

  1844. is delayed.

  1845. The five

  1846. foolishly neglect

  1847. to prepare

  1848. any oil

  1849. at all.

  1850. And of

  1851. course,

  1852. lo and

  1853. behold,

  1854. the bridegroom

  1855. is delayed

  1856. in verse

  1857. five.

  1858. He's so

  1859. delayed that

  1860. in fact all

  1861. ten of the

  1862. virgins

  1863. fall asleep.

  1864. It's not

  1865. just the

  1866. foolish that

  1867. sleep,

  1868. but remarkably

  1869. the wise

  1870. too.

  1871. It's a

  1872. remarkable

  1873. contrast

  1874. given the

  1875. exhortations

  1876. earlier in

  1877. our passage.

  1878. And the

  1879. wise sleep

  1880. too,

  1881. which goes

  1882. to show

  1883. that watching

  1884. for the

  1885. Lord,

  1886. it doesn't

  1887. mean that

  1888. we burn

  1889. ourselves

  1890. out,

  1891. running at

  1892. a complete

  1893. sprint at

  1894. all times.

  1895. We need

  1896. sleep and

  1897. rest too.

  1898. But these

  1899. are two

  1900. very different

  1901. kinds of

  1902. sleep.

  1903. for the

  1904. wise sleep

  1905. in readiness,

  1906. in preparation

  1907. for what's

  1908. to come,

  1909. like soldiers

  1910. sleeping in

  1911. their battle

  1912. guard.

  1913. But in

  1914. contrast,

  1915. the sleep

  1916. of the

  1917. foolish,

  1918. it exposes

  1919. not only

  1920. their

  1921. unpreparedness,

  1922. but their

  1923. laziness

  1924. too.

  1925. Shouldn't

  1926. these five

  1927. girls have

  1928. sacrificed

  1929. some sleep

  1930. to get

  1931. ready to

  1932. honor the

  1933. bridegroom?

  1934. I wonder

  1935. if

  1936. procrastination

  1937. and

  1938. laziness

  1939. might be

  1940. some of

  1941. the sins

  1942. that we

  1943. tolerate

  1944. most easily.

  1945. Does

  1946. laziness

  1947. sound as

  1948. bad as

  1949. unbridled

  1950. anger

  1951. or untamed

  1952. lust?

  1953. But make

  1954. no mistake,

  1955. spiritual

  1956. procrastination

  1957. and laziness

  1958. can lead us

  1959. to hell

  1960. just the

  1961. same.

  1962. It is

  1963. my

  1964. greatest

  1965. fear

  1966. that

  1967. there

  1968. are

  1969. some

  1970. who

  1971. go to

  1972. church

  1973. week

  1974. after

  1975. week,

  1976. maybe

  1977. even

  1978. this

  1979. own

  1980. church,

  1981. and

  1982. you

  1983. hear

  1984. the

  1985. life

  1986. changing

  1987. gospel

  1988. only

  1989. to

  1990. delay

  1991. putting

  1992. your

  1993. faith

  1994. in

  1995. Jesus

  1996. Christ,

  1997. saying,

  1998. oh,

  1999. I'll

  2000. always

  2001. have

  2002. later.

  2003. I need

  2004. to finish

  2005. school

  2006. first.

  2007. I need

  2008. to get

  2009. married

  2010. first.

  2011. there's

  2012. always

  2013. later.

  2014. Maybe

  2015. these

  2016. five

  2017. thought

  2018. the

  2019. same

  2020. exact

  2021. way

  2022. until

  2023. later

  2024. became

  2025. too

  2026. late.

  2027. My

  2028. friend,

  2029. if you

  2030. have

  2031. not

  2032. put

  2033. your

  2034. faith

  2035. in

  2036. Jesus

  2037. yet,

  2038. what

  2039. is

  2040. your

  2041. delay?

  2042. We

  2043. don't

  2044. know

  2045. when

  2046. Christ

  2047. will

  2048. return.

  2049. I'm

  2050. sure

  2051. there

  2052. are

  2053. many

  2054. priorities

  2055. in

  2056. your

  2057. life.

  2058. There

  2059. are

  2060. a

  2061. lot

  2062. of

  2063. important

  2064. things,

  2065. but

  2066. your

  2067. eternal

  2068. life,

  2069. heaven

  2070. or

  2071. hell,

  2072. how

  2073. could

  2074. that

  2075. not

  2076. reach

  2077. the

  2078. top

  2079. of

  2080. your

  2081. list?

  2082. So

  2083. take

  2084. the

  2085. steps

  2086. necessary

  2087. to

  2088. get

  2089. ready.

  2090. Christian,

  2091. we too

  2092. are

  2093. guilty

  2094. of

  2095. procrastination,

  2096. are we

  2097. not?

  2098. I am

  2099. guilty

  2100. of

  2101. procrastination.

  2102. If

  2103. Christ

  2104. can

  2105. return

  2106. at

  2107. any

  2108. point,

  2109. why

  2110. have

  2111. we

  2112. delayed

  2113. in

  2114. sharing

  2115. the

  2116. gospel

  2117. with

  2118. that

  2119. co-worker,

  2120. with

  2121. that

  2122. friend,

  2123. with

  2124. that

  2125. family

  2126. member?

  2127. Is

  2128. there

  2129. someone

  2130. that's

  2131. named,

  2132. that

  2133. image

  2134. is coming

  2135. immediately

  2136. to mind,

  2137. that the

  2138. Holy

  2139. Spirit

  2140. is

  2141. putting

  2142. on

  2143. you

  2144. right

  2145. now?

  2146. Delay

  2147. not

  2148. your

  2149. obedience,

  2150. but take

  2151. steps

  2152. to share

  2153. honestly.

  2154. Don't

  2155. be arrogant,

  2156. don't be rude,

  2157. don't offend

  2158. unnecessarily,

  2159. but be bold

  2160. and share

  2161. what's on

  2162. your heart.

  2163. And when

  2164. you do,

  2165. remember

  2166. what's

  2167. actually

  2168. happening

  2169. here.

  2170. I'm so

  2171. encouraged

  2172. by,

  2173. again,

  2174. the London

  2175. team.

  2176. for some

  2177. reason,

  2178. lately,

  2179. we've been

  2180. getting a

  2181. good number

  2182. of sales

  2183. people

  2184. coming by

  2185. our

  2186. door,

  2187. right,

  2188. selling

  2189. insurance,

  2190. solar panels,

  2191. high-speed

  2192. internet.

  2193. If I

  2194. can,

  2195. I try

  2196. to talk

  2197. to them

  2198. every

  2199. single

  2200. time.

  2201. But,

  2202. you know,

  2203. every time

  2204. they come,

  2205. they always

  2206. have this

  2207. look,

  2208. I've

  2209. noticed.

  2210. It's

  2211. like this

  2212. embarrassed,

  2213. sheepish

  2214. look,

  2215. like,

  2216. hey,

  2217. I need

  2218. something

  2219. from you,

  2220. but I'm

  2221. embarrassed,

  2222. I'm sorry

  2223. to ask.

  2224. But how

  2225. often do

  2226. we treat

  2227. sharing the

  2228. gospel in

  2229. the same

  2230. way?

  2231. Like,

  2232. we're

  2233. bothering

  2234. them,

  2235. we're

  2236. nuisancing

  2237. them,

  2238. we're

  2239. taking up

  2240. their time.

  2241. When we

  2242. evangelize,

  2243. let us not

  2244. forget,

  2245. we're not

  2246. doing them

  2247. a disservice,

  2248. we're sharing

  2249. with them

  2250. the good

  2251. news of

  2252. Jesus Christ,

  2253. the best

  2254. news of

  2255. his love

  2256. for us.

  2257. We're

  2258. getting them

  2259. ready,

  2260. we're

  2261. getting them

  2262. ready,

  2263. they need

  2264. to get

  2265. ready,

  2266. so we're

  2267. getting them

  2268. ready for

  2269. the return

  2270. of the

  2271. bridegroom.

  2272. And here

  2273. he comes,

  2274. at midnight,

  2275. later than

  2276. anyone expected,

  2277. a voice

  2278. announces the

  2279. arrival of

  2280. the bridegroom.

  2281. The girls

  2282. are shocked

  2283. awake and

  2284. immediately

  2285. scrambled to

  2286. get ready

  2287. for their

  2288. one job.

  2289. They trim

  2290. the charred

  2291. ends of

  2292. their lamps

  2293. so that the

  2294. flame can

  2295. burn clean

  2296. and bright

  2297. again.

  2298. only for

  2299. the five

  2300. to realize,

  2301. oh shoot,

  2302. their stomachs

  2303. drop.

  2304. I'm not

  2305. ready.

  2306. I have no

  2307. oil.

  2308. And so

  2309. they run

  2310. to the

  2311. other five,

  2312. the wives,

  2313. hey,

  2314. give me

  2315. some of

  2316. your oil.

  2317. I need

  2318. some oil.

  2319. And the

  2320. wives realize,

  2321. we don't have

  2322. enough to share.

  2323. we don't have

  2324. enough to

  2325. share.

  2326. And oil,

  2327. a lamp

  2328. without oil,

  2329. it's like

  2330. flashlights

  2331. without

  2332. batteries.

  2333. This battery

  2334. needs two

  2335. double A's.

  2336. I only have

  2337. two.

  2338. I can't

  2339. share one.

  2340. Lest there

  2341. be no

  2342. light at

  2343. all.

  2344. Lest there

  2345. be no

  2346. light for

  2347. the bridegroom

  2348. at all,

  2349. they send

  2350. the other

  2351. five to

  2352. then go

  2353. buy some

  2354. more.

  2355. The five

  2356. go to

  2357. buy.

  2358. And during

  2359. that time,

  2360. that exact

  2361. time,

  2362. the bridegroom

  2363. returns.

  2364. He comes

  2365. and he

  2366. enters in

  2367. the marriage

  2368. feast with

  2369. all those

  2370. who are

  2371. ready for

  2372. him.

  2373. Once the

  2374. foolish five

  2375. return,

  2376. they find

  2377. out the

  2378. scariest

  2379. reality

  2380. in all

  2381. of Scripture,

  2382. that the

  2383. door has

  2384. been shut

  2385. on them,

  2386. never to

  2387. be opened

  2388. again.

  2389. There is

  2390. a finality

  2391. to this

  2392. conclusion.

  2393. once the

  2394. door is

  2395. shut,

  2396. it is

  2397. never to

  2398. be opened

  2399. again.

  2400. Then Jesus

  2401. echoes what

  2402. he said on

  2403. the Sermon on

  2404. the Mount,

  2405. chapter 7,

  2406. declaring the

  2407. same judgment,

  2408. I never

  2409. knew you.

  2410. Depart

  2411. from me.

  2412. So this

  2413. is the

  2414. million dollar

  2415. question.

  2416. Are you

  2417. ready?

  2418. ready?

  2419. Are you

  2420. ready?

  2421. Jesus makes

  2422. the point in

  2423. this parable

  2424. that the

  2425. readiness

  2426. isn't

  2427. transferable.

  2428. No one

  2429. can get

  2430. ready for

  2431. you.

  2432. No one

  2433. can transfer

  2434. the oil

  2435. of their

  2436. lamps onto

  2437. you.

  2438. Not the

  2439. faith of

  2440. your parents,

  2441. not your

  2442. friends,

  2443. not your

  2444. pastor,

  2445. not your

  2446. husband or

  2447. wife.

  2448. Will you

  2449. hear,

  2450. well done,

  2451. good and

  2452. faithful servant,

  2453. or will you

  2454. hear,

  2455. I never

  2456. knew you.

  2457. When I

  2458. was younger,

  2459. I honestly

  2460. was terrified

  2461. at the

  2462. thought of

  2463. Jesus

  2464. returning.

  2465. I

  2466. always

  2467. thought I

  2468. needed more

  2469. time.

  2470. I needed

  2471. more time

  2472. to get

  2473. ready,

  2474. to fix

  2475. myself.

  2476. I wondered

  2477. if I was

  2478. good enough.

  2479. I

  2480. thought that

  2481. if Jesus

  2482. came back

  2483. when I

  2484. was in

  2485. the middle

  2486. of a

  2487. sinful

  2488. act,

  2489. then the

  2490. door would

  2491. be shut

  2492. on me.

  2493. Maybe if

  2494. I got

  2495. lucky,

  2496. if Christ

  2497. came back

  2498. when I

  2499. was in

  2500. the middle

  2501. of doing

  2502. something

  2503. holy,

  2504. like

  2505. worshiping

  2506. or praying,

  2507. then I

  2508. could be

  2509. entered

  2510. in.

  2511. I thought

  2512. it was

  2513. like Russian

  2514. roulette.

  2515. Maybe I

  2516. had a

  2517. shot.

  2518. Maybe,

  2519. just maybe,

  2520. if I

  2521. got

  2522. lucky.

  2523. That's

  2524. the only

  2525. thing I

  2526. could depend

  2527. on was

  2528. luck.

  2529. Do you

  2530. realize how

  2531. terrifying it

  2532. is to live

  2533. like that?

  2534. Do you

  2535. live like

  2536. that?

  2537. Because

  2538. who can

  2539. truly

  2540. declare

  2541. that you're

  2542. so confident

  2543. that your

  2544. lives are so

  2545. pure and

  2546. holy and

  2547. perfect that

  2548. when Christ

  2549. returns,

  2550. he would

  2551. not catch

  2552. you in

  2553. sin?

  2554. Sins of

  2555. the mind,

  2556. sins of

  2557. the body,

  2558. sins known

  2559. and sins

  2560. unknown,

  2561. sins of

  2562. omission and

  2563. sins of

  2564. commission,

  2565. sins great,

  2566. sins small.

  2567. Even when

  2568. we're not

  2569. sinning,

  2570. maybe in

  2571. that particular

  2572. moment that

  2573. he returns,

  2574. friends,

  2575. who can

  2576. possibly

  2577. declare

  2578. themselves

  2579. fully ready

  2580. for the

  2581. return of

  2582. Christ?

  2583. But

  2584. praise be

  2585. to God

  2586. that because

  2587. of his

  2588. first coming,

  2589. all those

  2590. who have

  2591. put their

  2592. faith in

  2593. Jesus Christ

  2594. are now

  2595. ready for

  2596. the second

  2597. coming.

  2598. We just

  2599. sang of

  2600. it that

  2601. praise be

  2602. to God

  2603. that our

  2604. sin,

  2605. not in

  2606. part,

  2607. but the

  2608. whole,

  2609. is laid,

  2610. nailed onto

  2611. the cross

  2612. so that we

  2613. can truly

  2614. declare from

  2615. the depths

  2616. of our

  2617. heart that

  2618. it is

  2619. well.

  2620. We are

  2621. ready.

  2622. We are

  2623. eager for

  2624. our master

  2625. to return.

  2626. Jesus

  2627. alone is

  2628. the solid

  2629. rock on

  2630. which we

  2631. stand.

  2632. Confidence,

  2633. we don't

  2634. have confidence

  2635. in ourselves.

  2636. We don't

  2637. say that we

  2638. are ready

  2639. because of

  2640. ourselves,

  2641. but because

  2642. of the

  2643. finished and

  2644. perfect work

  2645. of Christ.

  2646. Jesus gave

  2647. himself,

  2648. as we read

  2649. in the

  2650. assurance of

  2651. pardon,

  2652. to redeem

  2653. us from

  2654. all lawlessness

  2655. and to

  2656. purify for

  2657. himself a

  2658. people for

  2659. his own

  2660. possession at

  2661. the cross

  2662. of Calvary.

  2663. So now we

  2664. are those who

  2665. eagerly await,

  2666. joyfully await,

  2667. hopefully await

  2668. for his

  2669. arrival.

  2670. No longer

  2671. do we

  2672. cower in

  2673. fear of

  2674. the day of

  2675. judgment.

  2676. Why?

  2677. Because there

  2678. is no fear

  2679. in love.

  2680. There's no

  2681. fear in love,

  2682. but perfect

  2683. love casts

  2684. out fear.

  2685. So all

  2686. who confess

  2687. that Jesus

  2688. is our

  2689. Lord and

  2690. Savior,

  2691. without

  2692. fallout

  2693. bunkers,

  2694. without

  2695. MREs,

  2696. without

  2697. preparing,

  2698. like these

  2699. apocalyptic

  2700. ready groups,

  2701. we are

  2702. the ones

  2703. that are

  2704. ready for

  2705. the end

  2706. of the

  2707. world.

  2708. We're

  2709. ready to

  2710. stand before

  2711. the almighty

  2712. judge on

  2713. that faithful

  2714. day.

  2715. We're

  2716. ready.

  2717. We're

  2718. ready to

  2719. receive the

  2720. crown of

  2721. righteousness

  2722. that is

  2723. bestowed for

  2724. all those

  2725. who loved

  2726. his arrival.

  2727. What good

  2728. news.

  2729. Life is

  2730. so hard,

  2731. and staying

  2732. ready at

  2733. all time

  2734. is so

  2735. hard.

  2736. We fight

  2737. this battle

  2738. on many

  2739. fronts,

  2740. our sinful

  2741. flesh,

  2742. the temptations

  2743. of this

  2744. world,

  2745. and our

  2746. wily enemy.

  2747. How prone

  2748. we are to

  2749. wander away.

  2750. But whoever

  2751. openly declares,

  2752. if you openly

  2753. declare today,

  2754. that you just

  2755. simply say,

  2756. Lord, I need

  2757. your help.

  2758. I can't do

  2759. it on my

  2760. own.

  2761. That no

  2762. matter who

  2763. you are,

  2764. what you

  2765. have done,

  2766. no matter

  2767. how much

  2768. time you

  2769. have wasted,

  2770. he will

  2771. never reject

  2772. you.

  2773. Never,

  2774. ever reject

  2775. you.

  2776. But you

  2777. can openly

  2778. declare this

  2779. beautiful verse,

  2780. this ending

  2781. to Jude,

  2782. now to him

  2783. who is able

  2784. to keep you

  2785. from stumbling

  2786. and to present

  2787. you blameless

  2788. before the

  2789. presence of

  2790. his glory

  2791. with great

  2792. joy.

  2793. To the

  2794. only God,

  2795. our Savior,

  2796. through Jesus

  2797. Christ,

  2798. our Lord,

  2799. be glory

  2800. and dominion

  2801. and power

  2802. and authority

  2803. for all

  2804. time,

  2805. now and

  2806. forever.

  2807. So until

  2808. that day,

  2809. that glorious

  2810. day,

  2811. we labor

  2812. on in

  2813. expectancy

  2814. and in

  2815. hope,

  2816. that one

  2817. day when

  2818. our faith

  2819. shall become

  2820. sight,

  2821. so we

  2822. make it,

  2823. we make it

  2824. our greatest

  2825. longing,

  2826. the prayer

  2827. of our hearts,

  2828. simply just

  2829. to say,

  2830. Lord,

  2831. come,

  2832. Lord Jesus.

  2833. pray with

  2834. me.

  2835. Father,

  2836. we praise

  2837. you that

  2838. again,

  2839. though we

  2840. are not

  2841. ready in

  2842. and of

  2843. ourselves,

  2844. though we

  2845. have proven

  2846. ourselves

  2847. undeserving

  2848. for the

  2849. crown of

  2850. righteousness,

  2851. we praise

  2852. you,

  2853. oh God,

  2854. that because

  2855. of your

  2856. faithfulness,

  2857. your call,

  2858. your help,

  2859. the power

  2860. of your

  2861. Holy Spirit

  2862. that is

  2863. training us

  2864. to live

  2865. lives of

  2866. holiness

  2867. and godliness,

  2868. we look

  2869. to you

  2870. and we

  2871. are eager

  2872. for your

  2873. coming,

  2874. though we

  2875. are battered

  2876. and discouraged,

  2877. though we

  2878. are weak

  2879. and tired,

  2880. empower us

  2881. today,

  2882. encourage us

  2883. today,

  2884. make us

  2885. eager and

  2886. hopeful

  2887. for your

  2888. arrival.

  2889. We long

  2890. for that

  2891. one

  2892. great day,

  2893. and in

  2894. Jesus' name

  2895. we pray,

  2896. amen.

  2897. Amen.
