  1. Good to meet with you guys this Sunday and worship our Lord this morning.

  2. Like Paul said, my name is Andrew.

  3. Matthew 25, verse 31 to 46.

    Matthew 25:31–46

  4. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of the Lord.

  5. Heavenly Father, we thank you so much that your Word, the Scripture, is active, living,

  6. and breathing.

  7. And as we encounter your Word, it comes to life in our own lives.

  8. Lord, this morning I feel so much inadequacy, so much weakness.

  9. And ask for your help and power of your Holy Spirit.

  10. Lord, won't your Word come alive this morning to speak to your people,

  11. to clutch at our heartstrings,

  12. to convict us of any sin,

  13. and to fill us with encouragement and hope of the future that is yet to come.

  14. Be with us this morning, Lord, by the power of your Holy Spirit.

  15. In Jesus' name we pray.

  16. Amen.

  17. Won't you please rise with me for the reading of God's Word.

  18. Matthew chapter 25, verse 31 to 46.

    Matthew 25:31–46

  19. When the Son of Man comes in His glory,

  20. and all the angels with Him,

  21. then He will sit on His glorious throne.

  22. Before Him will be gathered all the nations,

  23. and He will separate people, one from another,

  24. as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

  25. And He will place the sheep on His right,

  26. but the goats on the left.

  27. Then the King will say to those on His right,

  28. Come, you who are blessed by my Father,

  29. inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

  30. For I was hungry, and you gave me food.

  31. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink.

  32. I was a stranger, and you welcomed me.

  33. I was naked, and you clothed me.

  34. I was sick, and you visited me.

  35. I was in prison, and you came to me.

  36. Then the righteous will answer Him, saying,

  37. Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,

  38. or thirsty and give you drink?

  39. And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you,

  40. or naked and clothe you?

  41. And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?

  42. And the King will answer them,

  43. Truly I say to you,

  44. as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,

  45. you did it to me.

  46. Then He will say to those on His left,

  47. Depart from me, you cursed.

  48. Into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

  49. For I was hungry, and you gave me no food.

  50. I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink.

  51. I was a stranger, and you did not welcome me.

  52. Naked, and you did not clothe me.

  53. Sick and in prison, and you did not visit me.

  54. Then they also will answer, saying,

  55. Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty,

  56. or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison,

  57. and did not minister to you?

  58. Then He will answer them, saying,

  59. Truly I say to you,

  60. as you did not do it to one of the least of these,

  61. you did not do it to me.

  62. And these will go away into eternal punishment,

  63. but the righteous into eternal life.

  64. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  65. You may be seated.

  66. Do you love Jesus?

  67. Eight years ago, I was on a church missions trip

  68. to Baja California, Mexico,

  69. when I was confronted by a little boy

  70. who sprang this question up to me.

  71. Do you love Jesus?

  72. I was taken aback by his eagerness with the question,

  73. but I confidently replied,

  74. Yes, of course I do.

  75. The boy then gave me a skeptical look.

  76. And yelled,

  77. Prove it.

  78. He proceeded to run off,

  79. and I was left dumbfounded and bewildered,

  80. partly because I didn't have the Spanish vocabulary

  81. to prove it.

  82. And also partly,

  83. I didn't know if I had the English vocabulary

  84. to prove it either.

  85. Fast forward to May 2026, two months ago.

  86. I was attending my wife's graduation ceremony

  87. for a master's program

  88. at Gordon-Connacle Theological Seminary.

  89. During the Bachelorette service,

  90. one of our New Testament professors

  91. gave a sermon of exhortation.

  92. And his main piece was this.

  93. The most important question

  94. that we will ever have to answer

  95. is this.

  96. Do you love Jesus?

  97. Do you love Jesus?

  98. This question is so important

  99. that Jesus asks it three consecutive times to Peter.

  100. Peter, the chief disciple

  101. who denied Jesus three times

  102. and left him to be crucified and killed.

  103. Jesus, after having resurrected from the dead,

  104. approaches Peter,

  105. his deeply ashamed disciple,

  106. and asks him,

  107. Peter,

  108. Peter,

  109. do you love me?

  110. Do you love me?

  111. Do you love me?

  112. And Peter replies,

  113. Christ,

  114. you know that I love you.

  115. You know that I love you.

  116. You know that I love you.

  117. And each time Peter replies,

  118. yes, I love you,

  119. Jesus commands Peter

  120. to feed his sheep.

  121. If Peter truly loves his master, Jesus,

  122. he will tend to and shepherd

  123. those who Christ calls his sheep

  124. sheep for the rest of his life.

  125. It's more than Peter's words.

  126. It's his entire life going forward.

  127. It's actions

  128. that will be the evidence

  129. for his love for Jesus.

  130. Do you love Jesus?

  131. If so, then you prove it.

  132. Jesus doesn't ask this question

  133. and issue this commandment here

  134. as a mere mental and moral exercise.

  135. And in that same way,

  136. our answer to this question

  137. and the evidence behind this

  138. is more than just amusing,

  139. a mere thought.

  140. How we answer this question

  141. with our words,

  142. not just our words,

  143. our actions

  144. and with our entire lives

  145. has eternal implications

  146. for each and every one of us here.

  147. Our passage in Matthew 25

  148. this morning reveals that

  149. Jesus,

  150. the Son of Man,

  151. who died on the cross

  152. and resurrected from the dead,

  153. and ascended into heaven,

  154. he will come again.

  155. In the second coming,

  156. Jesus will bring

  157. the final judgment

  158. to the eternal,

  159. to the entire world.

  160. And he will judge

  161. each and every person

  162. based on their conduct

  163. of how they have lived their lives.

  164. Do you love Jesus?

  165. On the final day,

  166. on the final judgment day,

  167. your life,

  168. it will be truth

  169. of whether you truly

  170. loved him or not.

  171. And whether your final verdict

  172. is eternal life

  173. with the Lord God

  174. or eternal punishment

  175. away from him.

  176. And so this is our main point

  177. for our passage this morning.

  178. Be ready

  179. for the final judgment

  180. of the Son of Man

  181. when he returns.

  182. I'll put some four

  183. different parts this morning.

  184. First,

  185. the authority

  186. of the Son of Man.

  187. Second,

  188. the reward

  189. of the righteous sheep.

  190. Third,

  191. the curse

  192. of the unrighteous goats.

  193. And fourth,

  194. the eternal consequences.

  195. First,

  196. the authority

  197. of the Son of Man.

  198. We are in

  199. the final part

  200. of what is called

  201. the Olivet Discourse

  202. in the Gospel of Matthew,

  203. where Jesus speaks

  204. of the end times

  205. and his second coming

  206. to the earth.

  207. In the past week's passages,

  208. Jesus said that

  209. when the end

  210. of the age arrives,

  211. it's unknown to us.

  212. But when Jesus

  213. does return,

  214. we will be judged

  215. for our preparedness,

  216. making the most

  217. of what God

  218. has entrusted to us

  219. in a Christ-centered

  220. and gospel-driven life.

  221. Our passage this morning,

  222. then,

  223. concludes this Olivet Discourse

  224. with Jesus explaining

  225. what exactly

  226. will happen

  227. on this day

  228. of the final judgment

  229. and the criteria

  230. in which Jesus

  231. will judge

  232. all the world.

  233. But first,

  234. we must examine

  235. on what grounds

  236. does the Son of Man

  237. have the authority

  238. to do this?

  239. Who is he

  240. to separate

  241. and sort

  242. all the nations

  243. and peoples?

  244. In verse 31,

  245. Jesus says

  246. that the Son of Man

  247. will come in glory,

  248. accompanied by angels,

  249. and he will sit

  250. on his glorious throne.

  251. The term Son of Man,

  252. as we have seen

  253. in Jesus'

  254. referred to himself

  255. many times

  256. throughout the Gospel

  257. of Matthew,

  258. is referential

  259. to the prophecy

  260. in Daniel 7,

  261. where one,

  262. like a Son of Man,

  263. comes to the Ancient

  264. of days,

  265. and is given

  266. an everlasting dominion

  267. that all peoples,

  268. nations,

  269. and languages

  270. should serve him.

  271. That title,

  272. Son of Man,

  273. highlights Jesus'

  274. kingship and authority

  275. based on this

  276. Daniel 7 prophecy.

  277. Jesus' authority

  278. as the Son of Man

  279. is also displayed

  280. that when he comes

  281. in glory,

  282. all the angels

  283. will accompany him.

  284. The entire army

  285. of angels,

  286. spiritual beings

  287. created by God

  288. to worship him

  289. and accomplish his will,

  290. will leave their posts

  291. in heaven

  292. to follow up to Jesus,

  293. not as his equals,

  294. but as his subjects.

  295. 1 Peter 3.22

  296. says that Jesus,

  297. when he had resurrected

  298. and had gone into heaven,

  299. has angels,

  300. authorities,

  301. and powers

  302. subjected to him.

  303. Here in our passage,

  304. Jesus says that he will

  305. return with all

  306. of these celestial beings

  307. leading them to earth

  308. in his final return.

  309. And once he returns,

  310. Jesus will sit

  311. on his glorious throne

  312. with all the nations

  313. gathered around him.

  314. Just the throne imagery,

  315. it evokes

  316. kingly authority.

  317. Though here and now,

  318. Jesus sits at the right hand

  319. of the throne of God

  320. the Father in heaven,

  321. reigning over heaven

  322. and earth.

  323. In his second coming,

  324. when Jesus comes again,

  325. Jesus will return

  326. to establish his kingdom

  327. and throne on earth

  328. so that his kingship

  329. will be in plain sight

  330. to everyone

  331. in the world.

  332. It's remarkable to think

  333. that as Jesus is foretelling

  334. this glorious return,

  335. this glorious return,

  336. that future one,

  337. who will sit

  338. on his glorious throne

  339. surrounded by his angels

  340. and all the nations,

  341. he sits in this passage,

  342. perhaps on a little stone,

  343. a meager stone

  344. on the Mount of Olives,

  345. surrounded by his

  346. motley crew of disciples,

  347. knowing that one disciple

  348. will betray him,

  349. another will deny him

  350. three times,

  351. and all will forsake him,

  352. leaving him to be crucified

  353. over the three days.

  354. This is Jesus,

  355. the Son of God,

  356. who humbled himself

  357. in the form of man,

  358. that the Son of Man

  359. would be delivered

  360. to earthly authorities

  361. to be rejected,

  362. to be mocked,

  363. to be flogged,

  364. to be crucified.

  365. And yet,

  366. even in the humblest,

  367. perhaps most humiliating

  368. of situations,

  369. Jesus looks towards

  370. the eternal realities

  371. of the day

  372. when he will return

  373. in glory

  374. and power

  375. and majesty

  376. as the supreme king

  377. and judge of all.

  378. And so when he returns,

  379. he sits enthroned

  380. with all nations,

  381. all people

  382. coming before him.

  383. When an official,

  384. a governor,

  385. or a king

  386. arrives to the city,

  387. the citizens

  388. are expected

  389. to greet him

  390. and gather before him,

  391. a symbol of their loyalty

  392. and subjugation.

  393. When a king is crowned,

  394. the people are called

  395. to gather

  396. in commemoration

  397. and celebration

  398. of his coronation.

  399. The king is at

  400. the center

  401. of his people's attention.

  402. For example,

  403. during the 2023

  404. coronation

  405. of King Charles III

  406. of the United Kingdom,

  407. there were over

  408. 2,000 guests

  409. who were invited

  410. to view the ceremony

  411. at Westminster Avenue,

  412. representing over

  413. 200 countries

  414. and including

  415. other nations'

  416. royalties,

  417. world leaders,

  418. religious leaders,

  419. and other prominent

  420. figures of power

  421. and influence.

  422. Let's blow this number

  423. up just a little bit more.

  424. Within the United Kingdom,

  425. over 20 million people

  426. on that day

  427. viewed the ceremony

  428. on television.

  429. Let's blow that figure

  430. out even more.

  431. Within the entire world,

  432. globally,

  433. there was an audience

  434. of approximately

  435. 2 billion people

  436. across 125 countries

  437. that tuned in

  438. to King Charles III's

  439. coronation.

  440. One-fourth

  441. of the entire world

  442. had their eyes

  443. on King Charles.

  444. Church,

  445. when Jesus returns,

  446. it will be exceedingly

  447. more than that.

  448. All nations,

  449. all people

  450. will be gathered

  451. before him

  452. as he sits

  453. on his throne.

  454. This is not just

  455. all present

  456. living people,

  457. but all nations,

  458. kingdoms,

  459. civilizations

  460. that ever existed

  461. in the world.

  462. Revelation 20

  463. says that even

  464. the dead

  465. will be brought

  466. forward to the throne

  467. of Jesus

  468. to be judged.

  469. Billions upon

  470. billions

  471. of people.

  472. And Jesus commands

  473. their attention,

  474. authority over all,

  475. whether they believe

  476. in him or not.

  477. Philippians 2,

  478. 9-11 says,

  479. Therefore God

  480. has highly exalted

  481. him and has

  482. sowed on him

  483. the name that is

  484. above every name,

  485. so that at the name

  486. of Jesus

  487. every name should

  488. bow,

  489. in heaven and on earth

  490. and under the earth

  491. and every tongue

  492. confess that Jesus

  493. Christ is Lord.

  494. Revelation 1-7

  495. says,

  496. Behold,

  497. he is coming

  498. with the clouds

  499. and every eye

  500. will see him,

  501. even those

  502. who pierce him.

  503. And all tribes

  504. of the earth

  505. will wail

  506. on countenance.

  507. Every person,

  508. whether or not

  509. they acknowledge

  510. the Son of Man

  511. before,

  512. whether they embrace

  513. Jesus

  514. or pierce him,

  515. will see Jesus

  516. and they won't

  517. be able to help

  518. but confess

  519. that he is Lord

  520. over all things,

  521. all people,

  522. when he returns.

  523. And so,

  524. this is the great

  525. authority that Jesus

  526. has over all the earth

  527. and it is by

  528. his authority

  529. that Jesus

  530. judges the nations

  531. and separates

  532. the sheep

  533. and goats

  534. from one another.

  535. And so,

  536. when he returns,

  537. the Son of Man

  538. will separate people

  539. one from another

  540. as a shepherd

  541. separates the sheep

  542. and the goats.

  543. The people listening

  544. to Jesus at this time

  545. would have been

  546. very familiar

  547. with the image

  548. of the shepherd,

  549. sheep and goats

  550. that Jesus presents

  551. here.

  552. In ancient Palestine,

  553. shepherds would keep

  554. their sheep and goats

  555. together in the same

  556. pastures during the day

  557. since their grazing

  558. habits were pretty much

  559. the same.

  560. However,

  561. because goats

  562. tend to require

  563. warmer temperatures

  564. to rest in the evening,

  565. before nightfall,

  566. the shepherds

  567. would bring the flock

  568. to the resting quarters

  569. and would separate

  570. the sheep and goats

  571. from one another

  572. by hand.

  573. The sheep and goats

  574. would walk

  575. single file

  576. through a mare of sheep

  577. and the shepherd

  578. would swing a gaze,

  579. sorting the sheep

  580. or goats

  581. one by one,

  582. ensuring that

  583. each animal

  584. ends up

  585. with this appropriate

  586. long time.

  587. And let me tell you,

  588. I went down

  589. this unnecessary

  590. rabbit hole

  591. trying to search

  592. what do Palestinian

  593. sheep and goats

  594. look like.

  595. It's so hard

  596. to tell them

  597. they look so

  598. good for them.

  599. And just the thought

  600. of having the shepherds

  601. swinging the egg

  602. right and left

  603. and trying to pinpoint

  604. with their eyes,

  605. okay, this one's a sheep,

  606. this one's a goat,

  607. this one's a sheep.

  608. Oh, no, no, no,

  609. go, go, go, go, go,

  610. you gotta look.

  611. It's a strenuous,

  612. it's a painstaking process

  613. of being so careful

  614. in sorting

  615. the sheep and goats

  616. their properties.

  617. Just as painstakingly

  618. and personally

  619. the shepherd

  620. sorts his sheep

  621. and goats

  622. one after another,

  623. so will our Lord Jesus

  624. closely and personally

  625. place each individual

  626. person in his

  627. or her properties,

  628. whether that is

  629. among their fellow sheep

  630. or among their fellow goats.

  631. And Jesus says

  632. in verse 33,

  633. the shepherd places

  634. the sheep on his right

  635. but the goats

  636. on the left.

  637. There will be

  638. no middle group,

  639. no third group,

  640. no goat among sheep,

  641. no sheep among goats,

  642. only two rigid categories.

  643. Those who are the sheep

  644. and those who are the goats,

  645. right and left.

  646. From here, Jesus,

  647. reveals what exactly

  648. these cattle is.

  649. Sheep to his right

  650. goes to his left.

  651. Verse 3,

  652. verse 34,

  653. the son of man,

  654. now the king

  655. who sits upon

  656. his glorious throne

  657. says to those

  658. on his right,

  659. come,

  660. you are blessed

  661. by my father,

  662. inherit the kingdom

  663. prepared for you

  664. from the foundation

  665. of the world.

  666. Come,

  667. inherit the kingdom.

  668. Jesus continues to describe

  669. some of the things

  670. these people have done.

  671. Verse 35 to 36,

  672. they gave Jesus food

  673. when he was hungry.

  674. They give him drink

  675. when he was thirsty.

  676. When he was a stranger,

  677. would that home or shelter

  678. be welcomed him?

  679. When Jesus was naked,

  680. they clothed him.

  681. And when he was sick

  682. or imprisoned,

  683. they visited him.

  684. When Jesus was in physical need

  685. or misfortune,

  686. these blessed ones

  687. attended to him

  688. and cared for him

  689. as their own.

  690. And Jesus calls them

  691. blessed by my father

  692. and calls them

  693. to inherit the kingdom

  694. into eternal life

  695. and fellowship

  696. with the Lord.

  697. Jesus preaches

  698. this most twice

  699. only to be met

  700. with confusion.

  701. The righteous

  702. will answer him

  703. and say,

  704. Lord,

  705. when did we see you

  706. hungry,

  707. thirsty,

  708. a stranger,

  709. naked,

  710. sick,

  711. or in prison

  712. and when did we care

  713. of him?

  714. Imagine the bewilderment

  715. of these people.

  716. They received

  717. this glowing commendation

  718. from the most glorious

  719. Jesus.

  720. They're called blessed.

  721. They're told that

  722. they will inherit

  723. the kingdom

  724. of the Heavenly Father.

  725. They're told that

  726. they attended

  727. to Jesus' needs

  728. on earth.

  729. But they can't seem

  730. to recall

  731. for the life of them

  732. when they did

  733. any of their sins.

  734. They must have

  735. looked so timidly

  736. at Jesus.

  737. This is the glorious

  738. Jesus,

  739. enthroned

  740. in all this glory,

  741. wondering if he's

  742. made a mistake

  743. if he's got

  744. the wrong guy.

  745. Jesus,

  746. my Lord,

  747. pardon me.

  748. My memory

  749. might be a little

  750. spotty

  751. around the door.

  752. I don't think

  753. I've ever

  754. did any of these

  755. things for you.

  756. Lord Jesus,

  757. quite frankly,

  758. I don't even know

  759. if I've ever

  760. met you in person.

  761. Jesus answers

  762. their bewilderment

  763. so patiently

  764. and says,

  765. truly,

  766. I say to you,

  767. as you did it

  768. to one of the

  769. beasts of these,

  770. my brothers,

  771. you did it to me.

  772. Anyone who cared

  773. for the beasts

  774. of Jesus' brothers

  775. has done the same

  776. to Jesus.

  777. Jesus.

  778. What Jesus

  779. says here

  780. bears resemblance

  781. to what he told

  782. the disciples

  783. in Matthew 10,

    Matthew 10:40–42

  784. verse 40 to 42.

  785. Whoever receives you,

  786. receives me.

  787. And whoever receives me,

  788. receives him

  789. who sends me.

  790. And whoever gives

  791. one of these

  792. little ones

  793. even a cup

  794. of cold water

  795. to receive his

  796. disciple,

  797. truly,

  798. I say to you,

  799. he will by no means

  800. lose this reward.

  801. These little ones,

  802. as Matthew 10 says,

  803. are Jesus' disciples.

  804. In Matthew 12,

  805. Jesus stretches out

  806. his hand

  807. towards these

  808. same disciples

  809. and says,

  810. here are my brothers.

  811. For whoever does

  812. the will of my

  813. Father in heaven

  814. is my brother

  815. and sister

  816. and mother.

  817. And so whoever

  818. receives these

  819. little brothers

  820. of Jesus,

  821. his disciples,

  822. whoever clothes them,

  823. feeds them,

  824. shelters them,

  825. gives them even

  826. a cup of cold water,

  827. also does so

  828. to Jesus.

  829. Why does Jesus

  830. specifically highlight

  831. the actions of

  832. feeding these brothers

  833. who are so hungry,

  834. those who are thirsty,

  835. those who needed

  836. shelter, clothing,

  837. comfort, companionship,

  838. because each of

  839. these actions

  840. requires great

  841. sacrifice

  842. and selflessness

  843. of time,

  844. resources,

  845. energy.

  846. Church,

  847. it takes time,

  848. it takes resources,

  849. it takes energy

  850. for us

  851. to provide

  852. meals

  853. for fellow

  854. brothers and sisters

  855. through the meal

  856. train,

  857. just like Todd

  858. has said.

  859. It takes time

  860. to trek to the

  861. hospital to visit

  862. our sick friends

  863. and family.

  864. It requires

  865. sacrifice for us

  866. to go out of our

  867. way to comfort,

  868. encourage,

  869. and uplift

  870. heartbroken

  871. brothers and sisters.

  872. But we are

  873. willing to sacrifice

  874. because we see

  875. that there is a need

  876. amongst our

  877. brothers and sisters

  878. and we're stirred

  879. up by Christ's

  880. love to serve

  881. them.

  882. The disciples

  883. were among

  884. the lowliest

  885. of men,

  886. without home,

  887. without secure

  888. food or drink

  889. on the day by day,

  890. with barely a

  891. cloak to cover

  892. them from the

  893. elements.

  894. They were so

  895. severely in need,

  896. but I'm sure

  897. that many people

  898. would have seen

  899. them in their

  900. poverty and hear

  901. them talking so

  902. boldly about

  903. the Messiah as

  904. Jesus,

  905. whose fears of

  906. controversy in the

  907. public,

  908. and they would

  909. have just

  910. dunked their

  911. heads and

  912. hurried away

  913. by making

  914. excuses about

  915. why they are

  916. not able to

  917. provide

  918. their least

  919. examples.

  920. However,

  921. if anyone

  922. were to be

  923. stirred up

  924. by the love

  925. of Christ,

  926. they will

  927. pay heed

  928. to the

  929. least of

  930. these.

  931. Jesus

  932. brought us

  933. and care for

  934. them and

  935. receive their

  936. words,

  937. and doing so

  938. also care for

  939. Jesus and

  940. receive his

  941. words.

  942. And that is

  943. what Jesus

  944. commends these

  945. chiefs for,

  946. for paying

  947. heed to the

  948. needs of his

  949. disciples and

  950. receiving them

  951. welcomingly,

  952. and thereby

  953. receiving Jesus

  954. as their own

  955. as well.

  956. What Jesus

  957. is not saying,

  958. mind you,

  959. is that our

  960. kindness and

  961. generosity should

  962. be closed off

  963. to unbelievers.

  964. Galatians 5.10

  965. exhorts us to

  966. do good first

  967. to the household

  968. of faith,

  969. but then also

  970. to love our

  971. needless as

  972. ourselves by

  973. doing good to

  974. them.

  975. God,

  976. whether it's

  977. the homeless

  978. or the sick,

  979. our neediest

  980. friend or our

  981. harshest enemy,

  982. we are called

  983. to honor even

  984. the least of

  985. these neighbors

  986. because they

  987. have been created

  988. in the image

  989. of God and

  990. bear that dignity

  991. to be treated

  992. as such.

  993. However,

  994. the way we

  995. treat and

  996. receive fellow

  997. believers has

  998. an important

  999. significance because

  1000. it reflects how

  1001. we treat Jesus

  1002. himself.

  1003. Whoever receives

  1004. the words of

  1005. Jesus'

  1006. disciples and

  1007. accepts them

  1008. also receives

  1009. and accepts

  1010. Jesus and

  1011. is saved by

  1012. faith.

  1013. And Jesus

  1014. commends them

  1015. and rewards

  1016. them and

  1017. says,

  1018. come,

  1019. inherit the

  1020. kingdom.

  1021. Now,

  1022. some people

  1023. will read this

  1024. passage and

  1025. come to the

  1026. conclusion that

  1027. these people

  1028. of Jesus'

  1029. right received

  1030. the kingdom

  1031. of God because

  1032. they fit the

  1033. home, because

  1034. they helped

  1035. the poor,

  1036. because they

  1037. sheltered the

  1038. homeless,

  1039. visited and

  1040. imprisoned.

  1041. some will

  1042. conclude that

  1043. eternal rewards

  1044. for the

  1045. righteous hinge

  1046. on their

  1047. concern for

  1048. and the

  1049. prioritization of

  1050. the social

  1051. welfare of the

  1052. world.

  1053. The hungry

  1054. need to be

  1055. fed.

  1056. The disenfranchised

  1057. and marginalized

  1058. need to be

  1059. restored.

  1060. Wealth needs

  1061. to be redistributed

  1062. in order for

  1063. God's kingdom

  1064. to manifest.

  1065. The way we

  1066. love others

  1067. certainly has

  1068. eternal

  1069. significance.

  1070. However,

  1071. we cannot

  1072. conclude that

  1073. our salvation

  1074. depends on

  1075. our inactive

  1076. peace acts

  1077. of mercy.

  1078. There will

  1079. be a fatal

  1080. mistake and

  1081. the conclusion

  1082. itself is

  1083. not consistent

  1084. with what

  1085. Jesus says

  1086. all throughout

  1087. his life

  1088. and ministry

  1089. and what

  1090. God's word

  1091. says.

  1092. Jesus is

  1093. not suggesting

  1094. that anyone

  1095. can inherit

  1096. the kingdom

  1097. of his

  1098. father based

  1099. on their

  1100. works.

  1101. Within our

  1102. passage, there

  1103. are several

  1104. clues that

  1105. indicate that

  1106. Jesus is

  1107. not saying

  1108. that those

  1109. on his

  1110. right will

  1111. inherit the

  1112. kingdom because

  1113. of their

  1114. good works.

  1115. Let's go

  1116. back to

  1117. verse 34

  1118. for a moment.

  1119. It says,

  1120. Come, you

  1121. who are

  1122. blessed by

  1123. my father,

  1124. inherit the

  1125. kingdom prepared

  1126. for you from

  1127. the foundation

  1128. of the world.

  1129. First, the

  1130. verb inherit

  1131. is not used

  1132. for something

  1133. that is

  1134. earned.

  1135. When you

  1136. inherit something,

  1137. it does not

  1138. come at a

  1139. price.

  1140. It is freely

  1141. given as a

  1142. son inherits

  1143. his father's

  1144. laws.

  1145. The son

  1146. doesn't have

  1147. to toil

  1148. away in

  1149. order to

  1150. receive his

  1151. father's

  1152. position.

  1153. He simply

  1154. receives it

  1155. because he

  1156. is the

  1157. son of

  1158. his father.

  1159. In the

  1160. same way,

  1161. the inheritance

  1162. of God's

  1163. kingdom is a

  1164. gift that

  1165. cannot be

  1166. earned, but

  1167. is given

  1168. freely to

  1169. those whom

  1170. the father

  1171. calls his

  1172. own children.

  1173. Secondly,

  1174. the kingdom

  1175. is not just

  1176. haphazardly

  1177. given to

  1178. those blessed

  1179. ones.

  1180. After Jesus

  1181. sees that,

  1182. they do all

  1183. these good

  1184. deeds.

  1185. Rather,

  1186. the kingdom

  1187. was prepared

  1188. for them

  1189. from the

  1190. foundation

  1191. of the

  1192. world.

  1193. From the

  1194. very beginning,

  1195. it was God's

  1196. plan that

  1197. these people

  1198. would receive

  1199. his kingdom.

  1200. Their God

  1201. elect,

  1202. as it says

  1203. in Ephesians

  1204. 1,

  1205. for those

  1206. whom he

  1207. chose in

  1208. him before

  1209. the foundation

  1210. of the world,

  1211. that they

  1212. should be

  1213. holy and

  1214. blameless

  1215. before him.

  1216. God already

  1217. knew that

  1218. these people

  1219. would inherit

  1220. his kingdom,

  1221. and the way

  1222. he cared for

  1223. the least of

  1224. Jesus'

  1225. disciples was

  1226. a testimony

  1227. of this.

  1228. And third,

  1229. Jesus'

  1230. description of

  1231. the good

  1232. deeds that

  1233. the people

  1234. on his

  1235. right hand

  1236. had done,

  1237. in verse

  1238. 35 and

  1239. 36,

  1240. should be

  1241. viewed as

  1242. a statement

  1243. of evidence,

  1244. not

  1245. causation.

  1246. In other

  1247. words,

  1248. Jesus is not

  1249. saying that

  1250. these people

  1251. have inherited

  1252. the kingdom

  1253. because of

  1254. their good

  1255. works,

  1256. but rather

  1257. that their

  1258. inheritance of

  1259. the kingdom,

  1260. their salvation,

  1261. is evidenced

  1262. by their

  1263. good works.

  1264. Lutheran

  1265. theologian

  1266. H.D.

  1267. Haman provides

  1268. a hopeful

  1269. illustration in

  1270. his commentary

  1271. of the gospel

  1272. according to

  1273. Matthew.

  1274. I can say,

  1275. it has

  1276. raining for

  1277. the atmospheric

  1278. conditions were

  1279. right for

  1280. raining,

  1281. or it has

  1282. raining for

  1283. the streets

  1284. are wet.

  1285. The for in

  1286. one case gives

  1287. the reason

  1288. for the rain,

  1289. and in the

  1290. other case,

  1291. the evidence

  1292. for it.

  1293. It is in

  1294. the second

  1295. sentence that

  1296. the for of

  1297. verse 35

  1298. is understood.

  1299. The judge

  1300. points to

  1301. the works

  1302. of verses

  1303. 35 and 36

  1304. as evidence

  1305. for the

  1306. position assigned

  1307. to the

  1308. sheep.

  1309. The people

  1310. to the right

  1311. of Jesus

  1312. are called

  1313. righteous by

  1314. him.

  1315. They're called

  1316. blessed.

  1317. They're called

  1318. inheritors of the

  1319. kingdom for

  1320. their good deeds

  1321. give evidence

  1322. that they have

  1323. been saved by

  1324. Jesus on the

  1325. cross and

  1326. transformed by

  1327. the Holy Spirit

  1328. dwelling inside

  1329. them.

  1330. by grace,

  1331. it has

  1332. become part

  1333. of their

  1334. DNA,

  1335. their inner

  1336. being,

  1337. as sheep

  1338. who belong

  1339. to Jesus

  1340. that they

  1341. desire to

  1342. do good

  1343. works.

  1344. In other

  1345. parts of

  1346. scripture,

  1347. we'll find

  1348. that same

  1349. idea that

  1350. we are not

  1351. saved by

  1352. our human

  1353. strivings and

  1354. deeds.

  1355. Just as we

  1356. read in our

  1357. assurance of

  1358. pardon,

  1359. Ephesians 2,

  1360. 8 says,

  1361. by grace,

  1362. you have been

  1363. saved for

  1364. faith.

  1365. This is not

  1366. your own

  1367. doing.

  1368. It is the

  1369. gift of God,

  1370. not the

  1371. result of works

  1372. so that no

  1373. one may

  1374. boast.

  1375. Romans 11,

  1376. 6,

  1377. but if it

  1378. is by grace,

  1379. it is no

  1380. longer on the

  1381. basis of

  1382. works,

  1383. otherwise grace

  1384. would no

  1385. longer be

  1386. grace.

  1387. Or Titus 3,

  1388. 5,

  1389. God our

  1390. Savior saves

  1391. us not

  1392. because of

  1393. works done

  1394. by us in

  1395. righteousness,

  1396. but according

  1397. to his own

  1398. mercy.

  1399. Our salvation

  1400. does not

  1401. depend on our

  1402. good works

  1403. or our

  1404. meaning of

  1405. certain quota

  1406. of good deeds

  1407. and service.

  1408. salvation is

  1409. fully by

  1410. grace and

  1411. grace alone

  1412. through faith.

  1413. It is by

  1414. grace through

  1415. faith that

  1416. the woman

  1417. with the

  1418. alabaster jar

  1419. was saved

  1420. in Luke 7,

  1421. not because

  1422. she broke

  1423. the perfume

  1424. jar and

  1425. kissed Jesus'

  1426. feet,

  1427. but because

  1428. she was

  1429. given faith

  1430. to believe

  1431. that Jesus

  1432. was her

  1433. Lord and

  1434. King and

  1435. treat him

  1436. like

  1437. sin.

  1438. It is by

  1439. the Lord's

  1440. mercy that

  1441. the Samaritan

  1442. leper in

  1443. Luke 17

  1444. was saved,

  1445. not because

  1446. he followed

  1447. Jesus'

  1448. directions

  1449. perfectly to

  1450. be healed

  1451. of his

  1452. leprosy,

  1453. but because

  1454. he came

  1455. to believe

  1456. that Jesus

  1457. was the

  1458. promised

  1459. Messiah and

  1460. ran back

  1461. to Jesus

  1462. to bow

  1463. before him

  1464. in prison.

  1465. It is by

  1466. the grace

  1467. of Jesus

  1468. dying on

  1469. the cross

  1470. for our

  1471. sins that

  1472. whoever

  1473. believes in

  1474. him is

  1475. saved.

  1476. Not because

  1477. we earned

  1478. such sacrificial

  1479. love by any

  1480. marriage,

  1481. but because

  1482. God was so

  1483. rich in

  1484. mercy to

  1485. look at

  1486. our sorry

  1487. and sinful

  1488. sins and

  1489. still say,

  1490. you are

  1491. my blessed

  1492. ones,

  1493. and for

  1494. your sake

  1495. my son

  1496. will die.

  1497. Notice

  1498. how

  1499. impregulous

  1500. the sheep

  1501. on the

  1502. right were

  1503. to receive

  1504. this

  1505. commendation.

  1506. Their

  1507. kindness and

  1508. generosity to

  1509. Jesus'

  1510. little ones,

  1511. it wasn't

  1512. premedicated.

  1513. They weren't

  1514. scheming for

  1515. their salvation.

  1516. Their

  1517. surprise was

  1518. genuine.

  1519. They were

  1520. not expecting

  1521. any reward

  1522. for their

  1523. deeds and

  1524. were acting

  1525. out of

  1526. genuine

  1527. faith and

  1528. love in

  1529. their hearts.

  1530. When they

  1531. selflessly and

  1532. joyfully received

  1533. and cared for

  1534. the least of

  1535. Jesus'

  1536. brothers,

  1537. they were

  1538. also selflessly

  1539. and joyfully

  1540. receiving the

  1541. Lord Jesus

  1542. unbeknownst to

  1543. them.

  1544. Such good

  1545. works were

  1546. not what

  1547. caused for

  1548. salvation,

  1549. but rather

  1550. the fruit of

  1551. evidence that

  1552. was born from

  1553. their salvation

  1554. and sanctification.

  1555. God

  1556. is

  1557. God

  1558. is

  1559. dead.

  1560. God

  1561. is

  1562. dead.

  1563. Someone who

  1564. is saved by

  1565. the Lord Jesus

  1566. Christ will

  1567. show evidence of

  1568. their salvation

  1569. naturally by the

  1570. way that they

  1571. conduct themselves,

  1572. by the way that

  1573. they restrain and

  1574. discipline themselves,

  1575. by the way that

  1576. they sacrifice their

  1577. own interests for

  1578. the interests of

  1579. others.

  1580. themselves.

  1581. And rather than

  1582. coming from a

  1583. place of anxiety

  1584. and nervousness,

  1585. of having to

  1586. work for their

  1587. salvation,

  1588. try to earn it,

  1589. these works will

  1590. instead come from

  1591. a fullness of

  1592. joy and gratitude

  1593. evidence that the

  1594. Holy Spirit is

  1595. indwelling.

  1596. And this is a

  1597. decisive factor of

  1598. the sheep that

  1599. God, that Jesus

  1600. calls to on his

  1601. right side.

  1602. They have faith in

  1603. Jesus Christ.

  1604. They have a

  1605. relationship with

  1606. Jesus.

  1607. And their joyful

  1608. and self-forgetful

  1609. desire to care for

  1610. even the least of

  1611. Jesus' brothers,

  1612. his disciples, is

  1613. evidence of this

  1614. relationship and

  1615. their salvation.

  1616. And these sheep,

  1617. who themselves have

  1618. become Jesus'

  1619. little ones, are

  1620. giving commendation

  1621. to the eternal

  1622. kingdom.

  1623. Brothers and

  1624. sisters, with

  1625. what sort of

  1626. attitude do we

  1627. go about serving

  1628. God and his

  1629. people?

  1630. Do we go about

  1631. our service and

  1632. create anxiety and

  1633. fear that we're

  1634. not doing enough

  1635. to win God's

  1636. favor?

  1637. Do we see

  1638. ourselves as too

  1639. little, too

  1640. unable, too

  1641. unpopular, too

  1642. unnoticed, too

  1643. unworthy, too

  1644. broken, to serve

  1645. God, let alone be

  1646. in his presence?

  1647. us.

  1648. Do we

  1649. want to

  1650. join in

  1651. freedom,

  1652. knowing that

  1653. our salvation has

  1654. already been

  1655. purchased by the

  1656. blood of Christ?

  1657. hearts?

  1658. I'd like to say

  1659. that I do

  1660. this myself, but

  1661. if I'm being

  1662. legally honest,

  1663. well, not even

  1664. legally honest, if

  1665. I'm being just

  1666. being honest, my

  1667. wife Kathy knows

  1668. it much better

  1669. than I do.

  1670. She notices that

  1671. sometimes my heart

  1672. isn't in the right

  1673. place when I serve.

  1674. Sometimes my heart

  1675. is just so self-absorbed

  1676. in itself, and I'm

  1677. looking at the work

  1678. set before me.

  1679. When I am most

  1680. self-absorbed with

  1681. myself, my thoughts

  1682. are this.

  1683. I need to pick

  1684. some good songs

  1685. for some service.

  1686. I need to figure

  1687. out some good

  1688. talking songs for

  1689. CT.

  1690. I need to cook

  1691. a delicious meal

  1692. for my life.

  1693. I need to deliver

  1694. the serving

  1695. well.

  1696. I need to

  1697. cook.

  1698. there's this

  1699. pressure of needing

  1700. to perform well,

  1701. to do things

  1702. right, that we

  1703. can voluntarily

  1704. stack on through

  1705. the works set

  1706. before us, that

  1707. actually takes

  1708. away the glorifying

  1709. God, and instead

  1710. makes it about

  1711. ourselves.

  1712. However, when we

  1713. remind ourselves

  1714. that we are already

  1715. counted as righteous

  1716. by God through

  1717. Jesus' sacrifice

  1718. on the cross, our

  1719. posture will

  1720. lie, our attitude

  1721. will change, and the

  1722. works set before us

1723. will be done out of

  1724. the joy of being

  1725. able to serve our

  1726. Lord Jesus and his

  1727. disciples.

  1728. Wow.

  1729. I get to worship

  1730. God with these

  1731. songs that we sing.

  1732. I get to delve

  1733. into God's word with

  1734. my fellow brothers

  1735. and sisters at CT

  1736. and pray with me.

1737. I get to love and

  1738. care for my family

  1739. by God's provision

  1740. and grace.

  1741. grace.

1742. I get to delight in

  1743. God's word and

  1744. deliver it to his

  1745. people.

  1746. What on the

  1747. Father?

  1748. And over time, we

  1749. won't need to remind

  1750. ourselves so

  1751. constantly.

  1752. The Holy Spirit will

  1753. sanctify us more and

1754. more that the joy of

  1755. the Lord will so

  1756. naturally ingrained in

1757. our work and be a

  1758. part of our identity

  1759. with Christ.

  1760. Christ.

1761. And so my prayer is

  1762. that we would all

  1763. surely transform in

  1764. this way by the

  1765. power of the Holy

  1766. Spirit, that this

  1767. would be the evidence

  1768. of our salvation in

  1769. the eyes of the

  1770. Supreme Judge, Jesus.

1771. And now we turn to

  1772. the ghost on the

  1773. other side of Jesus.

  1774. Verse 42.

1775. The Son of Man then

  1776. turns to those on

  1777. his left and says,

  1778. depart from me,

  1779. you cursed.

  1780. Into the eternal

  1781. fire prepared for the

  1782. devil and his

  1783. angels.

  1784. While Jesus beckons

  1785. the sheep on his

  1786. right to come, he

  1787. now says to the

  1788. ghost on his left

  1789. to depart from me.

  1790. He calls the right

  1791. blessed by my

  1792. Father, but he

  1793. calls the left

  1794. cursed.

  1795. And while those

  1796. on the right will

  1797. inherit the kingdom

  1798. prepared for them

  1799. from the foundation

  1800. of the world, those

  1801. on the left will

  1802. instead be cast into

  1803. the eternal fire

  1804. prepared for the

  1805. devil and his

  1806. angels.

  1807. In Revelation 20.

  1808. 10, the devil is

  1809. cast into the lake

  1810. of fire and then

  1811. after the final

  1812. judgment, everyone

  1813. whose name is not

  1814. written in the book

  1815. of life is thrown

  1816. into the lake of

  1817. fire.

  1818. The eternal fire

  1819. of punishment was

  1820. prepared specifically

  1821. for the devil and

  1822. his angels, spiritual

  1823. forces who rebelled

  1824. against God.

  1825. God.

  1826. But now, those

  1827. who participate in

  1828. those same acts of

  1829. spiritual rebellion

  1830. against God, who

  1831. continue to be in

  1832. unrepentant and

  1833. unbelieving sin, they

  1834. participate in the

  1835. work of the devil.

1836. And they are cast into

  1837. the eternal fire because

1838. they are children of the

  1839. devil, crucified in

  1840. 1 John 3.

  1841. 10.

  1842. And Jesus describes in

  1843. detail the deeds of

  1844. those who are cursed

  1845. into the eternal fire.

  1846. In verse 42 to 43, they

1847. did not give Jesus food

  1848. when he was angry.

1849. They did not give him

  1850. drink when he was

  1851. thirsty.

  1852. They did not welcome

  1853. him as a stranger,

  1854. clothe his nakedness,

  1855. nor visit him his

  1856. sickness and

  1857. imprisonment.

  1858. Essentially, the

  1859. opposite of what the

  1860. sheep have done.

1861. Those to the left of

  1862. Jesus will be confused

  1863. and bewildered as

  1864. well.

  1865. They ask him, Lord,

1866. when did we not see

  1867. you and not minister

  1868. to you?

  1869. They cannot recall

  1870. times when they saw

1871. Jesus in need and not

  1872. take care of him.

1873. Like the sheep on the

  1874. right, they may not

  1875. even recall ever

  1876. encountering Jesus in

  1877. person.

1878. Jesus, like he did with

  1879. the sheep, is so

  1880. patient to answer that

1881. go over the minute in

  1882. verse 45.

1883. Truly, I say to you,

1884. as you did not do it to

1885. one of the least of these,

1886. you did not do it to me.

  1887. Again, Jesus is not

  1888. teaching here that these

  1889. people will be condemned

  1890. for being uncharitable

1891. to the poor and needy,

1892. since that would be the

  1893. same principle as

  1894. salvation by works.

  1895. However, the fact that

  1896. these people did not

1897. receive and care for the

  1898. least of Jesus' brothers,

  1899. his disciples, means that

1900. they also did not receive

  1901. and care for Jesus

  1902. himself.

  1903. Because they rejected

  1904. his disciples and the

  1905. word, they have also

  1906. rejected Jesus.

  1907. peace and his word.

1908. And just as the faithful

  1909. disciples' deeds of care

  1910. was the evidence of

  1911. their salvation, the

  1912. unfaithful one's lack of

  1913. care was the evidence

  1914. of their demise.

  1915. When a king sends a

  1916. messenger to a foreign

  1917. country for diplomacy, the

1918. messenger is an emissary, a

  1919. representative, an

  1920. ambassador to the king.

  1921. Whatever way the messenger

1922. is treated translates in the

1923. same way to the king

  1924. himself.

1925. If another ruler is polite

1926. and kind when directly with

1927. the king, but then is

1928. secretly cruel and hateful to

1929. the king's messenger, he has

  1930. dishonored the king also.

1931. To reject the king's lowly

1932. messenger is to reject the

  1933. king himself.

1934. Those who neglected Jesus did

  1935. exactly that.

1936. By neglecting to care for the

1937. least of these brothers of

1938. Jesus, they also neglected to

  1939. care for Jesus himself.

1940. Perhaps if they saw Jesus face to

1941. face in their lifetime, out of

  1942. self-preservation and pride, they

1943. would have received him readily

  1944. intended to his knees.

1945. But when they are in the most

1946. private of moments and they

  1947. encounter his unassumably made,

1948. lowly disciples, they turn their

1949. hands away, refusing to care for

1950. them or to receive whatever

1951. they may have to say on behalf

  1952. of their master.

1953. Notice also that Jesus is not

1954. pulling out those on the

1955. south for atrocious sins and

1956. wrongs they have committed before

1957. neglecting to do right and

1958. neglecting to do good specifically

  1959. towards Jesus' disciples.

1960. These people could have countered

1961. Jesus and said, Lord, we never

  1962. murdered your disciples.

1963. We never stole or coveted from

  1964. them.

1965. We never lied to them.

1966. However, their neglect to care for

1967. Jesus' disciples was also a

  1968. rejection of Jesus.

1969. And this was evidence for their

  1970. spiritual unbelief.

1971. Even if they had been righteous

1972. indeed all their life, even if

1973. they were the most philanthropic

1974. and generous speakers in society,

1975. even if they had a clean record

1976. to their name, they did not

  1977. accept Jesus.

1978. And they did not receive Jesus'

  1979. disciples.

1980. This is evidence for their

  1981. spiritual death, for their

1982. unbelief in Jesus as their Lord

1983. and Savior, and their decisive

1984. seal for the eternal flames of

1985. punishment on the final judgment.

1986. To my fellow brothers and sisters,

1987. though we do not earn our

1988. salvation by works, we still need

1989. to keep our hearts in check.

1990. Do we follow God's commandments

  1991. like a two-do list, marking off

1992. all the sins that we have not

1993. committed, but forget the heart

  1994. behind each command?

1995. In the Sermon on the Mount, in

1996. Matthew 5, Jesus tells us that the

1997. law says, you shall not murder, but

1998. that even those who harbor anger

1999. at their brother will be liable

  2000. to judgment.

2001. The law says to not swear and

  2002. go falsely.

2003. But Jesus pushes that envelope,

2004. saying to just let your yes be yes

2005. and your no be no.

2006. All of these laws that Jesus

2007. fulfills in his sermon are for the

2008. purpose of loving our neighbor as

  2009. ourselves.

2010. Simply not murdering your neighbor

2011. is not necessarily a fact of love.

2012. You can't just walk up to someone

  2013. and say, I love you so I won't

  2014. murder you.

2015. It doesn't sound very lovely.

2016. But to forgive them of any wrongs

2017. that may have breached you gets to

2018. the heart of loving them well.

2019. Simply not swearing and don't

2020. falsely to your neighbor is not

2021. necessarily a fact of love.

2022. You can't just walk over to your

2023. wife and say, I love you so I'm not

  2024. going to lie.

2025. There's more to it than that.

2026. There's more to the heart of the

  2027. command.

2028. Holding fast and following through

2029. with what you say to them is at the

  2030. heart of the command.

2031. If we fall into the habit of just

2032. checking off what we have not done,

2033. and yet if we've left to do what is at

2034. the heart of God's commands, we too

2035. will lack true love for our brothers

2036. and sisters and for Jesus.

2037. In the same way that those on the

2038. left of Jesus lack love for Jesus

  2039. and his disciples.

2040. And so fellow Christian, be on guard

2041. over your hearts that you do not

2042. fail and fall into neglecting your

2043. fellow brothers and sisters and

2044. neglecting the heart of our Lord Jesus.

2045. To those of you joining us this

2046. morning, when we not consider

2047. yourself a Christian, please hear

2048. these words of Jesus carefully.

2049. Jesus is judging to those who

2050. must have sighted to be a bronze

  2051. and steal.

2052. Jesus, the Son of Man, who has all

2053. authority to judge the whole world

2054. on final days, is saying that those

2055. who do not receive his disciples and

2056. care for him also do not receive him

  2057. and care for him.

2058. Our final verse, verse 46, makes clear

  2059. what these consumments are.

2060. These will go away into eternal

2061. punishment of the righteous into

  2062. eternal life.

2063. To reject Jesus' disciple is to reject

  2064. Jesus' disciple.

2065. And to reject Jesus is to reject his

2066. lordship over your own life and to be

2067. cast into the eternal fire, the eternal

2068. punishment when that final judgment day comes.

2069. You can be as good in your actions and

  2070. conduct as you can.

2071. You can be as generous to others as you want

  2072. in your lifetime.

2073. But even the noblest of deeds done apart

2074. from faith in Jesus is, as theologian

2075. John Calvin calls it, splendid sin.

2076. Because they lack any Christ-glorifying vote.

2077. To the unbelievers who may be in our lives, I

2078. don't say this to trap you.

2079. But this morning in our Sunday service, you are

2080. surrounded by Jesus' disciples, fellow brothers

2081. and sisters of Jesus who are asking you,

2082. imploring you, to not reject our word, to not reject

2083. Jesus' word, to not reject Jesus as your lord and

2084. savior, and to instead put your faith in him and come

2085. into eternal life with him.

2086. We ask you so desperately not to reject our word and not to reject Jesus

2087. because we don't know when Jesus will return and bring that final judgment to the world.

2088. But the fact that there is still time now is in itself a marvelous grace from God.

2089. Because it means that you still have time here and now to set Jesus as lord and to identify with his sheep

2090. destined for eternal joy rather than identify with the goats destined for eternal demise.

2091. When Jesus comes, when he returns, there will be no extra time to settle your accounts.

2092. There's no adverts to make, no just one second to make amends.

2093. He will judge each and every one of us based off of our comment right then and there.

2094. of whether we truly loved him through his disciples, the least of his brothers and sisters.

2095. And just as the sheep and goats were strictly categorized into right and left,

2096. Jesus, the supreme judge, will separate us strictly into eternal life and eternal punishment.

2097. There are cosmic, eternal consequences to the decision that you make whether to follow Jesus or reject him.

2098. I share this with you now, knowing full well that there are some of you here who do not believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

2099. And I share this with you, knowing full well how hard it is to believe this.

2100. Because I too have always been there.

2101. Many of us in the church have been there, if not all of us.

2102. We too have once rejected Jesus and his disciples and instead sought to make a name for ourselves.

2103. To be Lord and King over our own lives.

2104. Maybe it was finding success in our wealth.

2105. Maybe it was desired influence amongst our friends and co-workers.

2106. Maybe it was desired to find security in our family.

  2107. Maybe it was possible.

2108. Maybe we wanted to start a legacy built on our own outlets.

2109. Or maybe our life goal was to saturate ourselves in worldly pleasure to the point that we become numb from it.

2110. Whatever the case, I too, we too, did not care for Jesus at one point.

2111. At one point we did not love Jesus.

2112. He had no business in my life, nor I in his.

2113. But the more that I tried to climb up this endless ladder of self-driven success,

  2114. the emptier I felt.

2115. The hungrier and thirstier I got.

2116. The more estranged and alienated I became from others.

2117. The more naked and exposed I felt of my weaknesses.

2118. The sicker I felt in my stomach and my feathers.

2119. And the more imprisoned I felt in my own mind and in my own life.

2120. I felt hollow and empty and left to think,

2121. if this is all that there is to this life,

  2122. it's not my privilege.

2123. But God, in his infinite love and kindness,

2124. showed me how mistaken, how broken of a sinner that I was

2125. to try to play master over my own life.

2126. And in that same love and kindness,

2127. God sent his only son, Jesus,

  2128. 2,000 years ago,

2129. to come into this world of the humble poor man.

2130. Not only to live on his stuff,

2131. but to serve as the lowest,

  2132. the lowliest servant,

  2133. the least of these,

  2134. and to die,

2135. though he was without sin,

2136. to die the sinner's death on the cross.

  2137. For our sake.

2138. That we would be saved and redeemed of our enslaved

  2139. into sin and death.

  2140. On that cross,

  2141. it was finished.

  2142. It was done.

2143. Whatever we may have been working for ourselves,

2144. no more death we have.

  2145. It was paid full

  2146. at the cross.

  2147. And when Jesus died

2148. and resurrected from the dead,

2149. he defeated that bondage of sin and death

2150. that shackled us for all of our life.

2151. And Jesus did all this

2152. for the joy set before him.

2153. Even as the world despised him

  2154. and shamed him,

2155. even as they treated him

2156. as the least of these,

  2157. Jesus died

2158. with the joy set before us,

  2159. knowing that his sacrifice

2160. would not only redeem us

  2161. from sin and shame,

  2162. but ultimately bring God

  2163. the utmost glory.

2164. Anyone who believes in this

  2165. and believes in Jesus

2166. will not face eternal punishment,

  2167. but instead

  2168. inherit the everlasting life.

  2169. 2 Corinthians 5.17 says,

  2170. Therefore,

2171. if anyone is in Christ,

2172. he is a new creation.

2173. The old has passed away.

  2174. Behold,

  2175. the new has come.

  2176. For our sake

2177. he made him to be sin

  2178. who knew no sin,

  2179. so that in him

  2180. we might become

  2181. the righteousness

  2182. of God.

  2183. You can ask

  2184. any other Christian

  2185. here in this room

  2186. that believing in Jesus

2187. as our Lord and Savior

  2188. was the moment

  2189. that transformed us

  2190. forever.

2191. Anyone who puts their faith

  2192. in Christ

  2193. is a new creation

  2194. and will be counted

  2195. as righteous

2196. in the eyes of God

2197. by the blood of Jesus.

  2198. they will be called

  2199. blessed by the Father

  2200. and they will inherit

  2201. the kingdom prepared

  2202. for them

  2203. from the foundation

  2204. of the world

  2205. an eternal reward

  2206. infinitely better

  2207. than all the riches

  2208. of the earth

  2209. because they bear

  2210. the fruits,

  2211. the evidence

  2212. of their salvation.

  2213. And so please,

2214. if you do not believe

  2215. now,

  2216. please receive

  2217. this invitation

2218. from the least of these

  2219. Jesus' brothers

  2220. and sisters

  2221. and accept Jesus'

  2222. wonderful gift

  2223. of salvation today

  2224. while you can.

2225. If you do accept Jesus

  2226. as your Lord

  2227. and Savior,

  2228. when that final day

  2229. of judgment comes,

  2230. when the Lord Jesus

  2231. returns in glory

  2232. and sits enthroned

  2233. on his glorious throne,

  2234. we will stand

  2235. before him

  2236. as our supreme judge

  2237. and he will give

  2238. a faithful account

  2239. of our deeds

  2240. and our conduct.

  2241. In the words

  2242. of English Pastor

  2243. Charles Spurgeon,

  2244. they fed the hungry,

  2245. but sovereign grace

  2246. had first fed them.

  2247. They clothed the naked,

  2248. but infinite love

  2249. first clothed them.

2250. They went to the prison,

  2251. but free grace

2252. had first set them free

  2253. from a worst prison.

  2254. They visited the sick,

  2255. but the good physician

  2256. in his infinite mercy

2257. first came and visited them.

  2258. They did good

  2259. for Christ's sake

  2260. because it was

  2261. the sweetest thing

  2262. to do anything

  2263. for Jesus.

  2264. Your Lord

  2265. will accept

  2266. what you do

  2267. because he's doing

2268. out of love to him.

  2269. And at the last,

  2270. while you blush

  2271. to hear it,

  2272. he will tell it

  2273. to the angels

2274. and to the listening hosts

  2275. of earth and heaven

  2276. and swing wide

2277. the gates of immortal bliss

  2278. and let you in

  2279. according to the promise

  2280. of his grace.

2281. And so I ask you

  2282. this question,

  2283. this most important question

2284. that will need to be

  2285. answered in your life.

  2286. Do you love Jesus?

2287. I pray that as we confess

  2288. with our mouths,

2289. our lives and our conduct

  2290. towards the least

  2291. of Jesus' little ones

  2292. would give evidence

  2293. of this love

  2294. until the day

  2295. that Jesus returns.

  2296. what's right?

  2297. O Lord,

  2298. what is the matter

  2299. that you would mind?

  2300. O Lord,

  2301. who are we

2302. to lord over our own lives

  2303. to claim that we

2304. are masters of our own faith?

  2305. when you are

  2306. the infinite God,

  2307. the almighty God,

  2308. the infinitely holy

  2309. and righteous

  2310. and just God

  2311. who knows far better

2312. than we could ever imagine.

  2313. Yet out of your

  2314. infinite kindness

  2315. and mercy,

  2316. you give us grace

2317. through your son of Jesus

  2318. that we could be

  2319. counted as righteous,

  2320. that we could be

  2321. called blessed,

2322. that we would not need

  2323. to earn our salvation

  2324. but instead

  2325. inherit it

  2326. as our children.

2327. But what gift of grace

2328. that you are our redeemer?

2329. And so stir our hearts

  2330. with,

  2331. fill our hearts

  2332. with affection

  2333. towards you,

  2334. remembering

  2335. that great

  2336. and costly sacrifice

  2337. that you are

2338. that your son of Jesus

  2339. paid for our rehab.

  2340. And we pray

  2341. for those

  2342. who still lack

  2343. in their belief.

  2344. We pray

  2345. that you would

  2346. soften our hearts,

  2347. that you would

  2348. give them eyes

  2349. to see

  2350. and ears to listen

  2351. to truly witness

  2352. your wonder

  2353. and your majesty,

  2354. your grace

  2355. and your mercy.

  2356. Now,

2357. we pray for all of us

2358. in the holy name of Jesus.

  2359. Amen.

  2360. Amen.
