  1. If you guys don't know me, my name is Ed, one of the pastors here.

  2. !

  3. Oh, Heavenly Father, Lord, where would we be without you?

  4. Where would we be without you, oh God?

  5. We know that what we're about to do, what we're about to hear, is to hear your very words,

  6. the words of life.

  7. There's so much noise in this world, so much chatter, so much yapping.

  8. We get distracted.

  9. We lose sight of what's most precious, what is the message that we need to hear most.

  10. So we pray by the power of your Holy Spirit, illuminate our hearts and our eyes once again

  11. today, so that we would understand, apply rightly, study rightly, solemnly, seriously.

  12. We'd pay attention to these words of life.

  13. That it would transform us from the inside out.

  14. And that we would be able to offer to you the little, these alabaster jars of our lives

  15. in continual sacrifice and worship of your name.

  16. Help us.

  17. In Jesus' name we pray.

  18. Amen.

  19. Amen.

  20. Amen.

  21. I invite you to stand if you are able to honor God's reading as we read aloud his word.

  22. Starting from verse 1.

  23. When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,

  24. Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest,

  25. whose name was Caiaphas, and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

  26. But they said, Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.

  27. Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him with an

  28. alabaster flask of very expensive ointment.

  29. And she poured it on his head as he reclined at table.

  30. And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, Why this waste?

  31. For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.

  32. But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, Why do you trouble the woman?

  33. For she has done a beautiful thing to me.

  34. For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.

  35. In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial.

  36. Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world,

  37. that what she has done will also be told in memory of her.

  38. Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot,

  39. went to the chief priests and said,

  40. What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?

  41. And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.

  42. And from that moment, he sought an opportunity to betray him.

  43. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  44. Please be seated.

  45. In a book on behavioral economics called Priceless,

  46. author William Poundstone has one central thesis.

  47. It's that we, as a human race,

  48. we are remarkably bad about knowing what something is actually worth.

  49. We think we're logical.

  50. We think we're good at numbers.

  51. We think we're rational.

  52. But in the end, we are terrible at knowing what something should actually be priced.

  53. And because of that, we're highly suggestible.

  54. And boy, do companies know that.

  55. For example, we naturally assume that the more expensive something is,

  56. it must be more valuable.

  57. In a blind taste test, participants were presented with two wines

  58. and simply asked,

  59. Which one do you like more, wine A or wine B?

  60. If the prices of the wines were released or revealed to them,

  61. almost always they will consistently rate the more expensive wine as better tasting.

  62. Even if the wines are exactly the same, identical.

  63. They even conduct brain scans.

  64. And they find in their brain that drinking the more expensive wine

  65. links to greater happiness, greater joy.

  66. Even completely arbitrary numbers can throw us off

  67. in thinking about what something is priced or what is valued.

  68. In another study, researchers, they asked participants

  69. to write down the last two digits of their social security number.

  70. And then, after that, they were asked to bid on random household products

  71. like computer products, groceries, clothing.

  72. Again, consistently, almost always,

  73. that those who wrote down those larger numbers

  74. from their social security number

  75. bid much higher than those who had lower numbers.

  76. Almost twice as high.

  77. Their social security number has nothing to do

  78. with the price of these items.

  79. We are that terrible

  80. at determining what something should be worth.

  81. But in the end,

  82. maybe we were just victims of capitalism

  83. and overpay for something.

  84. It's really not that big of a deal.

  85. Just overpay for something here and there.

  86. But there is something,

  87. or rather, someone

  88. whom we cannot afford to mis-evaluate.

  89. And his name is Jesus.

  90. Whether you know it or not,

  91. we have all put a price tag on him.

  92. We have all evaluated who he is

  93. and have appraised what he is worth.

  94. In this passage this morning,

  95. we see two groups of people

  96. who have done just that.

  97. And Matthew, he deliberately sets up this contrast

  98. between the many who get it

  99. egregiously wrong

  100. and the one who gets it

  101. breathtakingly right.

  102. Because evaluation,

  103. your evaluation,

  104. always turns into action,

  105. we must pay attention.

  106. So to follow the example

  107. of this remarkable woman

  108. who sees rightly who Jesus is

  109. and what he is worth,

  110. the main point of my sermon today is

  111. because Jesus is worth everything,

  112. pour out your alabaster jars in worship.

  113. The outline's simple.

  114. Highlight again this contrast.

  115. First, we're going to talk about

  116. a calculated killing.

  117. And as I do that,

  118. we're going to really see

  119. who is behind the calculation.

  120. And secondly,

  121. to see the remarkable woman.

  122. We're going to understand

  123. the uncalculated, quote-unquote,

  124. waste that she offers.

  125. Now that Jesus has finished

  126. the Olivet Discourse,

  127. which is the fifth and final discourse

  128. of the book of Matthew,

  129. we've turned the last corner.

  130. From the birth narratives

  131. to the Sermon of the Mount,

  132. from miraculous miracles

  133. to profound parables,

  134. we've come a long way,

  135. haven't we?

  136. Walking with Jesus week by week

  137. throughout the course

  138. of his life and ministry.

  139. And the word of God

  140. has made us fall in love

  141. with the word of God,

  142. has it not?

  143. Now we have finally arrived

  144. at the concluding scenes of Matthew.

  145. The last few days of Jesus' life

  146. before his tragic death.

  147. For quite a while now,

  148. Jesus has been predicting

  149. his death, right?

  150. But now we see that this prediction

  151. is starting to gain some steam.

  152. It's starting to come to fruition.

  153. By whose efforts, though?

  154. Who is driving this narrative

  155. that ultimately culminates

  156. to Jesus' death?

  157. From one angle,

  158. it's the cunning,

  159. calculating conspiracy of man.

  160. The insidious Jewish leaders,

  161. they hold a secret rendezvous

  162. in the palace of the high priest Caiaphas

  163. to plan the murder of Jesus.

  164. Caiaphas was a high priest,

  165. the highest position

  166. in all of the Jewish nation

  167. at the time,

  168. and he was for a record

  169. 18 years straight.

  170. It's far longer than any other

  171. high priest at that time.

  172. I think it goes to show

  173. that Caiaphas,

  174. he knew how to play the game,

  175. how to work the system,

  176. all so that he could stay in power.

  177. Probably by doing shady things like this.

  178. And hypocritical religious leaders,

  179. they hide in the darkness

  180. because they know

  181. that their conduct

  182. cannot stand in the light

  183. of public scrutiny.

  184. But if you followed us

  185. throughout Matthew,

  186. you know that, again,

  187. this conduct is not beneath them.

  188. It is well within their character.

  189. For quite some time now,

  190. they have been itching

  191. at the chance

  192. to remove Jesus from the picture.

  193. Matthew 12, 14,

  194. the Pharisees went out

  195. and plotted against him

  196. how to destroy him.

  197. Matthew 22, 15,

  198. the Pharisees went and plotted

  199. how to entangle him

  200. in his words.

  201. So,

  202. throughout Matthew,

  203. we've seen how they

  204. seethe

  205. with rage

  206. when they see that Jesus

  207. is more respected than him.

  208. And they tremble

  209. with fear

  210. when they see that

  211. his growing following

  212. threatens their place

  213. of power.

  214. So,

  215. Jesus,

  216. he's got to go.

  217. Ah,

  218. but

  219. that's not so easy

  220. when Jesus has won

  221. over the entire nation.

  222. Hence,

  223. what I call

  224. the Jesus problem.

  225. They need to get rid

  226. of somebody

  227. whom the whole nation loves

  228. all while doing it

  229. while making sure

  230. that everybody

  231. still likes them.

  232. It's a tricky problem.

  233. And for a while now,

  234. not a single person

  235. has been able

  236. to offer

  237. a viable solution.

  238. They tried

  239. debating him.

  240. They get

  241. thumped to the curb.

  242. They tried

  243. tricking him

  244. into breaking

  245. their man-made laws.

  246. That only makes

  247. people like them more.

  248. So,

  249. they finally come

  250. to their last resort.

  251. And they decide

  252. to abduct

  253. and murder him.

  254. That's how far

  255. they're willing

  256. to go.

  257. But even that

  258. is tricky

  259. because,

  260. number one,

  261. obviously this is

  262. completely illegal

  263. so they can't do it

  264. in broad daylight.

  265. And number two,

  266. they especially

  267. cannot do it

  268. during the Passover feast.

  269. Why?

  270. Because during

  271. the Passover,

  272. thousands and

  273. thousands of Jews

  274. pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

  275. It's like an intense

  276. pressure cooker.

  277. And if they

  278. kill them,

  279. kill him then.

  280. It's gonna

  281. pop.

  282. And a wild

  283. riot

  284. might break out.

  285. And then you know

  286. what happens?

  287. The Romans

  288. will come after

  289. their heads.

  290. So,

  291. there's no

  292. concrete plan,

  293. no concrete

  294. details,

  295. but they do

  296. agree on one

  297. constraint.

  298. We can't do it

  299. during the feast.

  300. We cannot do it

  301. during the feast.

  302. But as they're

  303. racking their brains,

  304. brainstorming,

  305. trying to figure out

  306. how to solve

  307. the Jesus problem,

  308. they get

  309. an unlikely,

  310. unexpected visitor.

  311. Someone that

  312. none,

  313. unexpected.

  314. And it's a

  315. familiar face.

  316. They've seen

  317. his face before.

  318. It's one of

  319. Jesus'

  320. own

  321. twelve

  322. disciples,

  323. Judas Iscariot.

  324. And he comes

  325. alone without

  326. his teacher,

  327. and he comes

  328. with a surprising

  329. proposition.

  330. He asks the

  331. chief priest,

  332. what will you

  333. give me

  334. if I sell

  335. him out to you?

  336. And consider

  337. that the

  338. Pharisees,

  339. they don't

  340. initiate

  341. any of this.

  342. Judas comes

  343. from his

  344. own heart,

  345. his own

  346. volition,

  347. with no

  348. backstory,

  349. no explanation.

  350. And really,

  351. because of that

  352. lack of

  353. backstory,

  354. much ink

  355. has been

  356. spilt trying

  357. to determine

  358. the exact

  359. motivation of

  360. Judas.

  361. What's exactly

  362. going on in

  363. his head?

  364. Some surmise

  365. that Iscariot

  366. means man

  367. of Kiriath,

  368. Kiriath

  369. being a

  370. city outside

  371. of the

  372. region of

  373. Galilee.

  374. That would

  375. mean that

  376. Judas is

  377. kind of the

  378. lone guy

  379. out,

  380. the odd

  381. man out.

  382. He's always

  383. an odd

  384. man out

  385. of the

  386. group of

  387. Galileans.

  388. Or the

  389. name Iscariot

  390. could link

  391. Judas to a

  392. group of

  393. political

  394. zealots

  395. who wanted

  396. the violent

  397. overthrow of

  398. the Roman

  399. government.

  400. And so

  401. perhaps he

  402. saw that

  403. over the

  404. course of

  405. Jesus'

  406. ministry

  407. that,

  408. hey,

  409. maybe this

  410. guy's not

  411. who I

  412. expected him

  413. to be.

  414. Or really,

  415. and it's

  416. sobering,

  417. it could

  418. simply be a

  419. love of

  420. money that

  421. corrupts him

  422. to the core.

  423. To his

  424. question of

  425. what he can

  426. get,

  427. the Pharisees

  428. appraised

  429. the life of

  430. Jesus,

  431. at 30

  432. silver coins.

  433. Only 30

  434. silver coins.

  435. Normally at

  436. that time,

  437. a piece of

  438. silver would

  439. be a

  440. denarius,

  441. which was

  442. just a

  443. day's

  444. labor or

  445. a day's

  446. wage for

  447. a common

  448. laborer.

  449. So this

  450. is a

  451. month's

  452. wage,

  453. 30 pieces

  454. of silver.

  455. Not an

  456. insignificant

  457. sum,

  458. but a

  459. shockingly

  460. low amount

  461. for the

  462. cost of

  463. a man's

  464. life.

  465. What is

  466. a man

  467. worth?

  468. worth?

  469. What is

  470. the Son

  471. of God

  472. worth?

  473. I don't

  474. know,

  475. but certainly

  476. more than

  477. this.

  478. When they

  479. appraise his

  480. life at the

  481. measly 30

  482. pieces of

  483. silver,

  484. they

  485. insultingly

  486. devalue who

  487. Jesus is.

  488. In fact,

  489. we read in

  490. Exodus 22,

  491. 31,

  492. that Moses

  493. sets the

  494. price of a

  495. slave's

  496. life at

  497. 30 silver

  498. shekels.

  499. It's a

  500. clear literary

  501. connection,

  502. right?

  503. 30 pieces

  504. of silver

  505. in both

  506. places.

  507. But in

  508. the Old

  509. Testament,

  510. the shekel,

  511. that's their

  512. currency,

  513. it's actually

  514. four times

  515. as much

  516. than a

  517. Daenerys.

  518. So they're

  519. saying Jesus

  520. is worth

  521. a quarter

  522. of a

  523. slave.

  524. But do you

  525. know what's

  526. even worse

  527. than their

  528. evaluation?

  529. It's the

  530. fact that

  531. Judas

  532. takes it.

  533. In doing

  534. so, he

  535. commits the

  536. worst sin

  537. of all of

  538. human history

  539. by betraying

  540. and killing

  541. the Son of

  542. God.

  543. Friends,

  544. it's

  545. honestly easy

  546. to think

  547. about Jesus

  548. or Judas

  549. and other

  550. him.

  551. We who

  552. walked with

  553. Jesus so

  554. long would

  555. never do

  556. such a

  557. thing.

  558. lest you

  559. flippantly

  560. dismiss the

  561. warning of

  562. his life.

  563. Recall that

  564. Judas,

  565. he too

  566. walked and

  567. talked and

  568. laughed and

  569. cried with

  570. Jesus for

  571. years.

  572. For years!

  573. Before he

  574. decided to

  575. commit the

  576. worst thing

  577. ever.

  578. How could

  579. he do

  580. such a

  581. thing?

  582. Because in

  583. the end,

  584. at the

  585. very core

  586. of who he

  587. is,

  588. what he

  589. thought about

  590. Jesus,

  591. all that

  592. Jesus was

  593. to Judas

  594. was a

  595. mere

  596. stepping stone

  597. to get

  598. what he

  599. wanted.

  600. According to

  601. his calculations,

  602. killing Jesus

  603. was worth it.

  604. It was worth

  605. the measly

  606. silver coins

  607. because Jesus

  608. was just a

  609. means to an

  610. end.

  611. Power,

  612. prestige,

  613. possessions,

  614. pleasure,

  615. whatever it

  616. was,

  617. Jesus was a

  618. means to get

  619. these other

  620. things.

  621. And now that

  622. Jesus is no

  623. longer fulfilling

  624. the purpose

  625. that he seeks,

  626. he's more than

  627. willing to

  628. toss Jesus

  629. aside.

  630. Take heed

  631. that you do

  632. not fall into

  633. the same

  634. trap.

  635. We Christians

  636. do not use

  637. Jesus as a

  638. means primarily

  639. to give meaning

  640. to our lives,

  641. to make us

  642. good people,

  643. to reunite us

  644. with loved ones

  645. in heaven,

  646. or to even

  647. escape hell.

  648. Those are not

  649. the primary

  650. things of why

  651. we seek

  652. Jesus.

  653. Don't get me

  654. wrong,

  655. following Jesus

  656. comes with

  657. those benefits,

  658. but those are

  659. not the final

  660. ends that we

  661. seek.

  662. Jesus is

  663. not a

  664. vehicle for

  665. anything other

  666. than the

  667. enjoyment of

  668. his own

  669. perfection.

  670. And if we

  671. approach

  672. Jesus in

  673. that kind

  674. of utilitarian

  675. manner,

  676. if we use

  677. him for

  678. other means,

  679. you will

  680. sell out.

  681. You will

  682. sell out when

  683. the going

  684. gets tough.

  685. When you

  686. don't feel

  687. like you

  688. are getting

  689. the things

  690. that you

  691. expected out

  692. of Jesus,

  693. when you

  694. feel like

  695. following

  696. Jesus just

  697. costs a

  698. little too

  699. much,

  700. just like

  701. Judas,

  702. you will

  703. leave and

  704. you will

  705. pursue other

  706. means to

  707. find that

  708. thing that

  709. you're

  710. searching for.

  711. As Thomas

  712. Merton writes,

  713. if we love

  714. God for

  715. something less

  716. than himself,

  717. we run the

  718. risk of

  719. hating him if

  720. we don't

  721. get what we

  722. hope for.

  723. So is

  724. Jesus the

  725. final goal,

  726. the north

  727. star, the

  728. everything that

  729. you are

  730. searching for?

  731. or is

  732. he a

  733. means to

  734. other

  735. self-serving

  736. idolatrous

  737. ends?

  738. In the

  739. end, at

  740. the heart

  741. of their

  742. sin, both

  743. the priests

  744. and Judas,

  745. they believe

  746. that they're

  747. the ones who

  748. are in

  749. control.

  750. They think

  751. that if

  752. they play

  753. their cards

  754. just right,

  755. then they

  756. can get

  757. their desired

  758. outcome.

  759. But

  760. Matthew

  761. presents this

  762. very, very

  763. differently.

  764. Our

  765. passage doesn't

  766. start with

  767. the Pharisees

  768. first plotting

  769. or Judas

  770. selling out.

  771. Notice that

  772. Matthew begins

  773. with Jesus'

  774. prediction of

  775. his death

  776. in verses

  777. 1-2.

  778. Then it

  779. says in

  780. verse 3

  781. that the

  782. Pharisees

  783. scheme

  784. amongst

  785. themselves.

  786. There's no

  787. dualistic

  788. tension.

  789. no cosmic

  790. battle

  791. between

  792. evil

  793. and good.

  794. There's

  795. no wondering

  796. who will

  797. live and

  798. who will

  799. die.

  800. The outcome

  801. has already

  802. been calculated.

  803. But not

  804. primarily by

  805. evil men,

  806. but by

  807. Jesus

  808. himself.

  809. Jesus

  810. will die,

  811. but he

  812. will die

  813. on his

  814. own terms.

  815. How do we

  816. know that?

  817. the timing

  818. of his

  819. death.

  820. This group

  821. of mobsters

  822. disguised as

  823. religious leaders,

  824. they want to

  825. kill Jesus

  826. nine days

  827. later,

  828. after the

  829. Passover,

  830. so that

  831. people go

  832. home and

  833. the tensions

  834. simmer down.

  835. But contrary

  836. to the

  837. priest's plan,

  838. Jesus says

  839. that he

  840. will die

  841. on Passover.

  842. This is

  843. Jesus'

  844. already

  845. fourth

  846. prediction of

  847. his death

  848. in the

  849. book of

  850. Matthew.

  851. But what's

  852. unique about

  853. this one

  854. in particular

  855. is that

  856. he explicitly

  857. links his

  858. death to

  859. Passover,

  860. one of the

  861. most important

  862. holidays in

  863. all of the

  864. Jewish

  865. tradition.

  866. Passover

  867. commemorates

  868. how God

  869. passed over

  870. all the

  871. Jewish homes

  872. and spared

  873. them from

  874. destruction

  875. during their

  876. bondage to

  877. Egypt.

  878. But to all

  879. the Egyptian

  880. homes,

  881. the destroyer

  882. takes the

  883. life of

  884. all of

  885. their

  886. firstborns.

  887. There's

  888. only one

  889. thing that

  890. set these

  891. homes apart.

  892. Just one.

  893. It's not

  894. that the

  895. Israelites

  896. were

  897. smarter,

  898. richer,

  899. stronger,

  900. better looking

  901. or even

  902. more righteous

  903. than the

  904. Egyptians.

  905. They were

  906. every bit

  907. as guilty

  908. and deserving

  909. of damnation.

  910. They could

  911. have been

  912. murderers,

  913. adulterers,

  914. stealers,

  915. liars,

  916. idolaters,

  917. just the

  918. same and

  919. they probably

  920. were.

  921. But what's

  922. the only

  923. difference that

  924. distinguished

  925. that night

  926. from the

  927. houses of

  928. Israel,

  929. the houses

  930. of Egypt?

  931. What's the

  932. one thing?

  933. It's the

  934. blood.

  935. It's the

  936. blood of

  937. the lamb.

  938. The blood

  939. on their

  940. doorposts

  941. was the

  942. only thing

  943. that God

  944. looked for.

  945. A spotless,

  946. pure lamb

  947. was slain so

  948. that they

  949. may live.

  950. So the

  951. timing is

  952. no mere

  953. coincidence.

  954. Don't get

  955. this wrong.

  956. the son

  957. will not

  958. die before,

  959. he will

  960. not die

  961. after,

  962. he will

  963. die on

  964. Passover

  965. to conclusively

  966. declare that

  967. Jesus is

  968. our

  969. Passover

  970. lamb.

  971. The

  972. spotless,

  973. blameless

  974. lamb of

  975. God who

  976. takes away

  977. the sins

  978. of the

  979. world

  980. was slain

  981. so that

  982. sinners like

  983. you and

  984. me can

  985. now have

  986. life.

  987. So the

  988. question is

  989. are you

  990. covered by

  991. the blood?

  992. There is

  993. a day

  994. when the

  995. destroyer

  996. will come

  997. knocking on

  998. your door.

  999. It doesn't

  1000. matter what

  1001. kind of life

  1002. you lived.

  1003. It doesn't

  1004. matter who

  1005. you once

  1006. were.

  1007. If you

  1008. put that

  1009. blood on

  1010. your doorposts,

  1011. if you

  1012. believe with

  1013. all of your

  1014. heart that

  1015. the blood

  1016. of Christ

  1017. will atone

  1018. you and

  1019. wash you

  1020. completely

  1021. clean from

  1022. all of

  1023. your sins,

  1024. the wrath

  1025. of God

  1026. will pass

  1027. over you.

  1028. Though we

  1029. are sinners

  1030. by nature

  1031. and practice,

  1032. praise God

  1033. there is no

  1034. maybe in

  1035. the mercy

  1036. and the

  1037. grace of

  1038. our God.

  1039. We sing

  1040. this,

  1041. that there

  1042. is a

  1043. fountain

  1044. filled with

  1045. blood and

  1046. sinners who

  1047. are plunged

  1048. beneath that

  1049. flood lose

  1050. all of

  1051. their guilty

  1052. stains.

  1053. So if

  1054. Jesus is

  1055. the Passover

  1056. lamb,

  1057. then the

  1058. chief priests

  1059. and Judas,

  1060. they vastly

  1061. undervalue

  1062. what Jesus

  1063. is worth.

  1064. We've seen

  1065. that.

  1066. But in

  1067. between these

  1068. two passages,

  1069. we read in

  1070. the middle

  1071. a rare,

  1072. beautiful

  1073. example of

  1074. someone who

  1075. gets it

  1076. right,

  1077. who knows

  1078. what Jesus

  1079. is worth.

  1080. And you

  1081. wouldn't be

  1082. able to tell

  1083. this from

  1084. reading this

  1085. passage itself,

  1086. but it's

  1087. actually not

  1088. in strict

  1089. chronological

  1090. order.

  1091. The opening

  1092. verses date

  1093. Jesus'

  1094. prediction very

  1095. clearly,

  1096. right, you

  1097. see in the

  1098. passage, to

  1099. two days

  1100. before the

  1101. Passover.

  1102. But in

  1103. chapter 12

  1104. in the

  1105. gospel of

  1106. John, he

  1107. describes this

  1108. same account

  1109. with this

  1110. woman with

  1111. the alabaster

  1112. flask six

  1113. days before

  1114. the Passover.

  1115. This story

  1116. happened even

  1117. before Palm

  1118. Sunday, which

  1119. we covered

  1120. what feels

  1121. like ages

  1122. ago in

  1123. March.

  1124. Why is

  1125. that important?

  1126. It shows

  1127. how deliberate

  1128. Matthew is

  1129. inserting this

  1130. story.

  1131. He's a

  1132. master at

  1133. color contrast.

  1134. Matthew is

  1135. drawing attention

  1136. to the bright

  1137. radiance of

  1138. this woman's

  1139. uncalculating

  1140. devotion by

  1141. setting it

  1142. against the

  1143. dark background,

  1144. the dark

  1145. hues of

  1146. these chief

  1147. priests and

  1148. Judas'

  1149. calculated

  1150. scheming.

  1151. Let's note

  1152. the setting.

  1153. Jesus is in

  1154. Bethany, the

  1155. house of

  1156. Simon the

  1157. leper, whom

  1158. we really

  1159. don't know

  1160. all that much

  1161. about.

  1162. apart from

  1163. the fact

  1164. that no

  1165. leper could

  1166. ever host

  1167. a party like

  1168. this, host

  1169. Jesus and

  1170. his disciples.

  1171. We know

  1172. that the

  1173. Mosaic

  1174. Law stipulates

  1175. all lepers

  1176. to live in

  1177. complete

  1178. quarantine.

  1179. So while

  1180. it's not

  1181. recorded, I

  1182. don't think

  1183. it's far

  1184. fetched to

  1185. assume that

  1186. Jesus is the

  1187. one who

  1188. miraculously

  1189. healed this

  1190. man,

  1191. transforming him

  1192. really from

  1193. head to

  1194. toe.

  1195. And really, I

  1196. just love that

  1197. they're meeting

  1198. at his

  1199. house.

  1200. Once empty,

  1201. decrepit house

  1202. is now

  1203. teeming with

  1204. life and

  1205. love.

  1206. That's the

  1207. effect that

  1208. Jesus can

  1209. have.

  1210. While Jesus

  1211. is reclining,

  1212. a woman

  1213. approaches

  1214. Jesus and

  1215. as it says

  1216. in Mark,

  1217. breaks the

  1218. neck of an

  1219. alabaster jar.

  1220. in ancient

  1221. times,

  1222. alabaster

  1223. flasks were

  1224. typically

  1225. designed with

  1226. a narrow

  1227. opening and

  1228. were typically

  1229. sealed with a

  1230. hardened wax,

  1231. all so that

  1232. it prevents any

  1233. kind of air

  1234. exposure.

  1235. So that means

  1236. to access its

  1237. contents, the

  1238. neck of the

  1239. flask was

  1240. typically broken.

  1241. There's no

  1242. resealing,

  1243. there's no

  1244. screw caps,

  1245. there's no

  1246. trying to save

  1247. some for later.

  1248. Once broken,

  1249. this whole

  1250. thing, the

  1251. whole contents

  1252. needed to be

  1253. spent at

  1254. once.

  1255. It's really a

  1256. beautiful picture

  1257. of an all-or-nothing

  1258. endeavor.

  1259. The flask is a

  1260. grenade of

  1261. very expensive

  1262. perfume with

  1263. exotic scents of

  1264. amber, myrrh,

  1265. and spice.

  1266. Once that pin is

  1267. pulled, the

  1268. aromatics

  1269. immediately

  1270. explode, flooding

  1271. the room with

  1272. its scents.

  1273. Amid the

  1274. bustle of a

  1275. busy room,

  1276. especially in a

  1277. patriarchal society,

  1278. I wonder

  1279. perhaps that the

  1280. woman was

  1281. hardly noticed

  1282. that evening,

  1283. hardly seen.

  1284. They undoubtedly

  1285. see her now

  1286. while she pours

  1287. all of its

  1288. contents on

  1289. Jesus' head

  1290. without

  1291. reserving a

  1292. single drop.

  1293. But then here

  1294. come the

  1295. dissenters,

  1296. right?

  1297. Some of the

  1298. more pragmatically

  1299. minded disciples

  1300. take offense

  1301. at what this

  1302. woman has done.

  1303. They object,

  1304. what a waste.

  1305. This could have

  1306. been sold and

  1307. given to the

  1308. poor.

  1309. And while this

  1310. might be a

  1311. direct rebuke

  1312. against this

  1313. woman, it

  1314. nonetheless is

  1315. still an

  1316. indirect rebuke

  1317. against Jesus

  1318. himself.

  1319. And in

  1320. John's account,

  1321. he actually

  1322. records the

  1323. price, an

  1324. estimated price

  1325. for this

  1326. expensive

  1327. ointment.

  1328. 300 denarii,

  1329. or roughly

  1330. an entire

  1331. years of

  1332. the wage

  1333. of a

  1334. common laborer.

  1335. So a

  1336. modern equivalent,

  1337. let's just use a

  1338. round number,

  1339. would be

  1340. $50,000.

  1341. dollars.

  1342. A

  1343. flask that's

  1344. worth a

  1345. whole lot

  1346. more than

  1347. a lot of

  1348. our own

  1349. cars.

  1350. From

  1351. $50,000,

  1352. just imagine

  1353. how many

  1354. peanut butter

  1355. and jelly

  1356. sandwiches you

  1357. can make

  1358. and hand

  1359. out to

  1360. the poor.

  1361. How many

  1362. months of

  1363. rent you

  1364. could cover,

  1365. how many

  1366. co-pays for

  1367. medical visits

  1368. that people

  1369. need.

  1370. It sounds

  1371. holy, but

  1372. we know that

  1373. from John's

  1374. account that

  1375. this charge

  1376. is led by

  1377. money-grubbing

  1378. Judas Iscariot,

  1379. only really

  1380. concerned with

  1381. filling up

  1382. the money

  1383. bag because

  1384. he's used to

  1385. skimming off

  1386. the top for

  1387. himself.

  1388. So Jesus,

  1389. knowing the

  1390. heart of

  1391. Judas,

  1392. sees right

  1393. through his

  1394. intentions.

  1395. But

  1396. interestingly,

  1397. Matthew doesn't

  1398. actually include

  1399. this detail

  1400. there.

  1401. He doesn't

  1402. give us an

  1403. easy off-ramp.

  1404. We have to

  1405. wrestle with

  1406. their argument

  1407. on its own

  1408. terms.

  1409. And I

  1410. don't know

  1411. about you,

  1412. but honestly,

  1413. I can understand

  1414. what they're

  1415. saying.

  1416. For the

  1417. past couple

  1418. weeks,

  1419. I've been

  1420. working hard

  1421. on the

  1422. church budget

  1423. that we're

  1424. going to

  1425. present next

  1426. week that

  1427. Sean just

  1428. mentioned at

  1429. our members

  1430. meeting.

  1431. If you're a

  1432. member,

  1433. please do

  1434. come to

  1435. that.

  1436. If you

  1437. heard next

  1438. week that

  1439. we are

  1440. planning on

  1441. buying an

  1442. ultra-expensive

  1443. men's cologne

  1444. for Sean.

  1445. That costs

  1446. $50,000.

  1447. And I

  1448. looked this

  1449. up.

  1450. There's

  1451. one called

  1452. Paco

  1453. Rabanne

  1454. Rabanne,

  1455. one million

  1456. luxe edition

  1457. for retail

  1458. price of

  1459. $57,000.

  1460. Notes of

  1461. blood

  1462. mandarin,

  1463. cinnamon,

  1464. and masculine

  1465. leather.

  1466. Apparently,

  1467. leather can be

  1468. masculine.

  1469. And it

  1470. comes in a

  1471. briefcase with

  1472. 18 carat

  1473. solid gold

  1474. crowned with

  1475. a 0.3

  1476. carat diamond.

  1477. And our

  1478. plan that

  1479. we're going

  1480. to present

  1481. next week is

  1482. to douse

  1483. Sean's

  1484. head completely

  1485. one go

  1486. with that

  1487. expensive

  1488. perfume.

  1489. If you

  1490. are going to

  1491. ask you,

  1492. do you

  1493. approve of

  1494. that budget?

  1495. I am

  1496. sure that

  1497. nearly all

  1498. of you would

  1499. submit on

  1500. slack a

  1501. big fat

  1502. no.

  1503. I would

  1504. submit a

  1505. big fat

  1506. no.

  1507. So I

  1508. wonder if

  1509. I and

  1510. how many

  1511. of us

  1512. would be

  1513. among the

  1514. dissenters

  1515. too.

  1516. So why

  1517. does Jesus

  1518. see this

  1519. act not

  1520. as a

  1521. waste,

  1522. but as

  1523. a beautiful

  1524. thing?

  1525. Is

  1526. Jesus

  1527. dismissing

  1528. the needs

  1529. of the

  1530. poor

  1531. here?

  1532. Well,

  1533. for one,

  1534. we can

  1535. immediately

  1536. ride off

  1537. that false

  1538. notion that

  1539. Jesus does

  1540. not care about

  1541. the poor.

  1542. Throughout

  1543. his ministry,

  1544. at every

  1545. chance that

  1546. he got,

  1547. he so

  1548. compassionately

  1549. cared for

  1550. the poor

  1551. and the

  1552. needy.

  1553. In just

  1554. the last

  1555. passage that

  1556. Andrew just

  1557. preached on,

  1558. the faithful

  1559. sheep are

  1560. known by

  1561. their care

  1562. for the

  1563. poor,

  1564. the sick,

  1565. the needy,

  1566. the imprisoned.

  1567. In fact,

  1568. when Jesus

  1569. says that you

  1570. will always

  1571. have the

  1572. poor with

  1573. you,

  1574. he's

  1575. quoting from

  1576. scripture,

  1577. he's quoting

  1578. from Deuteronomy

  1579. 15,

  1580. 11.

  1581. And the

  1582. rest of

  1583. that verse

  1584. says,

  1585. therefore I

  1586. command you

  1587. to be

  1588. open-handed

  1589. toward your

  1590. brothers and

  1591. toward the

  1592. poor and

  1593. needy in

  1594. your land.

  1595. So when

  1596. Jesus says

  1597. that you

  1598. will always

  1599. have the

  1600. poor with

  1601. you,

  1602. implicit in

  1603. his response

  1604. is his

  1605. expectation

  1606. that we

  1607. do prioritize

  1608. the needs

  1609. of the

  1610. poor today.

  1611. But Jesus

  1612. praises this

  1613. woman for

  1614. using this

  1615. oil not

  1616. for the

  1617. poor but

  1618. on him.

  1619. Why?

  1620. Because Jesus

  1621. knows who

  1622. he is.

  1623. I'm 100%

  1624. positive that

  1625. if I knocked

  1626. on Sean's

  1627. door this

  1628. week and

  1629. I proposed

  1630. this manly

  1631. leather cologne

  1632. idea asking

  1633. that should we

  1634. use this?

  1635. Should we

  1636. spend all this

  1637. money to

  1638. douse your

  1639. head?

  1640. He would

  1641. very humbly

  1642. put an

  1643. immediate stop

  1644. to this.

  1645. God

  1646. but Jesus

  1647. he lets

  1648. it happen

  1649. because he

  1650. knows who

  1651. he is.

  1652. C.S.

  1653. Lewis once

  1654. spoke of

  1655. this trilemma

  1656. that because

  1657. Jesus made

  1658. divine claims

  1659. there only

  1660. are three

  1661. options of

  1662. who he

  1663. could be.

  1664. He could

  1665. either be

  1666. a complete

  1667. lunatic,

  1668. he could be

  1669. an insidious

  1670. liar,

  1671. or he

  1672. could be

  1673. who he

  1674. says he

  1675. is,

  1676. the Lord.

  1677. And he

  1678. knows that

  1679. he is the

  1680. Lord that

  1681. is dying

  1682. soon.

  1683. Whether she

  1684. knew it or

  1685. not, this

  1686. woman sees

  1687. a really

  1688. once in a

  1689. lifetime,

  1690. once in

  1691. human history

  1692. opportunity.

  1693. We couldn't

  1694. even do this

  1695. if we wanted

  1696. to do this,

  1697. right?

  1698. No other

  1699. person after

  1700. the time of

  1701. Jesus could

  1702. have this

  1703. very chance.

  1704. take the

  1705. most important

  1706. person in

  1707. your life

  1708. right now.

  1709. Imagine what

  1710. they look like,

  1711. whether it's

  1712. your spouse,

  1713. a best friend,

  1714. a family

  1715. member.

  1716. Imagine,

  1717. God forbid,

  1718. they get this

  1719. phone call from

  1720. them, and

  1721. they say that

  1722. it's cancer.

  1723. Stage four.

  1724. They have one

  1725. week to live.

  1726. Would anyone

  1727. else in the

  1728. world take

  1729. priority in

  1730. that next

  1731. week for

  1732. you?

  1733. So this

  1734. short-lived

  1735. occasion ought

  1736. to take

  1737. priority over

  1738. all else.

  1739. And she

  1740. seizes this

  1741. opportunity by

  1742. breaking her

  1743. alabaster jar and

  1744. anointing Jesus'

  1745. body for

  1746. burial.

  1747. Typically,

  1748. ancient Jews,

  1749. they used

  1750. perfumes after

  1751. a death to

  1752. kind of mask

  1753. some of the

  1754. smells of a

  1755. decaying carcass.

  1756. But Jesus,

  1757. he knows that

  1758. he is a dead

  1759. man walking,

  1760. interprets this

  1761. act as a

  1762. means to

  1763. prepare him for

  1764. his crucifixion.

  1765. And author

  1766. Philip Keller

  1767. beautifully

  1768. captures this.

  1769. The delicious

  1770. fragrance ran

  1771. down his

  1772. shining hair and

  1773. thick beard.

  1774. It unfolded his

  1775. body with

  1776. its delightful

  1777. aroma.

  1778. aroma.

  1779. Even his

  1780. tunic and

  1781. flowing

  1782. undergarments

  1783. were drenched

  1784. with its

  1785. enduring

  1786. pungency.

  1787. Wherever he

  1788. moved, the

  1789. perfume would

  1790. go with him

  1791. into the

  1792. Passover,

  1793. into the

  1794. garden of

  1795. Gethsemane,

  1796. into the

  1797. high priest's

  1798. home,

  1799. into Herod's

  1800. hall,

  1801. into Pilate's

  1802. praetorium,

  1803. into the

  1804. crude hands

  1805. of those who

  1806. cast slots for

  1807. his clothing at

  1808. the foot of the

  1809. cross.

  1810. It was a

  1811. significant moment

  1812. momentous

  1813. meaning.

  1814. Honestly, I

  1815. admit that the

  1816. scent could have

  1817. worn off quickly.

  1818. The biblical

  1819. authors don't

  1820. comment on this.

  1821. But I like to

  1822. think that for

  1823. the last week of

  1824. Jesus' life, that

  1825. whoever Jesus

  1826. passed by,

  1827. whoever Jesus

  1828. talked to,

  1829. whoever handled

  1830. his body,

  1831. they smelled

  1832. the expression

  1833. of this woman's

  1834. extravagant,

  1835. dedicated love

  1836. for him.

  1837. Against the

  1838. backdrop of

  1839. Judas treasuring

  1840. 30 measly

  1841. coins, this

  1842. woman refuses to

  1843. treasure anything

  1844. else above

  1845. Jesus.

  1846. And she

  1847. expresses that

  1848. adoration, again,

  1849. by this extravagant,

  1850. over-the-top

  1851. offering with this

  1852. alabaster jar.

  1853. Even when she

  1854. knows that this

  1855. perfume will only

  1856. last temporarily.

  1857. Confession time

  1858. for me.

  1859. I'm such a

  1860. pragmatist that

  1861. I sometimes

  1862. really hate going

  1863. to the

  1864. supermarket.

  1865. Because when

  1866. I'm there, I

  1867. inevitably will

  1868. walk by the

  1869. flower section.

  1870. And I'll

  1871. look at them

  1872. and think to

  1873. myself,

  1874. gee, these

  1875. are nice.

  1876. these are

  1877. pretty.

  1878. They'd make

  1879. Christine so

  1880. happy.

  1881. But these

  1882. are $40.

  1883. That's like

  1884. three Chipotle

  1885. bowls.

  1886. And they're

  1887. going to die

  1888. in a week.

  1889. If you ever

  1890. see me in a

  1891. supermarket just

  1892. doing this in

  1893. front of some

  1894. flowers, you

  1895. know exactly

  1896. what's going

  1897. on in my

  1898. head.

  1899. man.

  1900. But when

  1901. I'm thinking

  1902. and loving

  1903. rightly, even

  1904. when I know

  1905. that these

  1906. fleeting flowers

  1907. will fade

  1908. fast, isn't

  1909. it worth it

  1910. to make my

  1911. wife happy?

  1912. That maybe on

  1913. a hard day

  1914. this week, she

  1915. could look at

  1916. these flowers and

  1917. feel a spark of

  1918. joy.

  1919. isn't her

  1920. happiness

  1921. invaluable and

  1922. weighty to

  1923. me?

  1924. That's the

  1925. heart of true

  1926. love.

  1927. Love does not

  1928. look for cheap

  1929. bargains.

  1930. Love does not

  1931. try to squeak by

  1932. with the bare

  1933. minimum.

  1934. Love gives the

  1935. very best it

  1936. can.

  1937. In 2 Samuel

  1938. 24, God

  1939. commands David

  1940. to build an

  1941. altar, to

  1942. offer sacrifices,

  1943. and a man

  1944. generously,

  1945. graciously offers

  1946. the field and

  1947. animals so that

  1948. David could do

  1949. this all for

  1950. free.

  1951. But he knows

  1952. he can't do

  1953. this.

  1954. It is not right

  1955. for him to do

  1956. this.

  1957. He will not

  1958. offer sacrifices

  1959. that cost him

  1960. nothing.

  1961. What about

  1962. you?

  1963. Does your

  1964. love for Jesus

  1965. cost you

  1966. something?

  1967. Does Jesus

  1968. receive the very

  1969. best of your

  1970. life?

  1971. understanding the

  1972. heart of love.

  1973. This woman

  1974. remarkably offers

  1975. probably what is

  1976. her most valuable

  1977. possession as an

  1978. expression of her

  1979. worship.

  1980. But how?

  1981. How does she do

  1982. this?

  1983. Where does she find

  1984. the wherewithal to

  1985. do this?

  1986. It's not a

  1987. mystery.

  1988. It's because she

  1989. does this because

  1990. she knows what

  1991. Jesus is worth.

  1992. For until men

  1993. recognize that

  1994. they owe

  1995. everything to

  1996. God, that

  1997. they are nourished

  1998. by his fatherly

  1999. care, that he

  2000. is the author of

  2001. their every good,

  2002. they should seek

  2003. nothing beyond

  2004. him.

  2005. They will never

  2006. yield him willing

  2007. service.

  2008. Nay, unless they

  2009. establish their

  2010. complete happiness

  2011. in him, they

  2012. will never give

  2013. themselves truly

  2014. and sincerely to

  2015. him.

  2016. It's John

  2017. Calvin.

  2018. So by way of

  2019. reminder, let me

  2020. remind you,

  2021. brothers and

  2022. sisters, who

  2023. Jesus is and

  2024. how good he has

  2025. been to us.

  2026. When those

  2027. closest, those

  2028. who say that

  2029. they love

  2030. you, they

  2031. leave, they

  2032. abandon you,

  2033. Jesus has

  2034. promised you, I

  2035. will never leave

  2036. you nor forsake

  2037. you.

  2038. When you're

  2039. exhausted and

  2040. run ragged by

  2041. this world, he

  2042. invites you into

  2043. his rest and to

  2044. carry his easy

  2045. yoke.

  2046. When you're

  2047. overlooked and

  2048. invisible, when

  2049. people forget who

  2050. you are and forget

  2051. your name, he

  2052. never forgets

  2053. your name, he

  2054. sees you and

  2055. knows you.

  2056. When you felt

  2057. ashamed and

  2058. dirty from your

  2059. sins, when you

  2060. feel like you

  2061. just couldn't

  2062. scrub yourself

  2063. clean enough, he

  2064. scoops to wash

  2065. your feet.

  2066. When you feel

  2067. like you're

  2068. damaged goods,

  2069. broken, fragile,

  2070. good for

  2071. nothing, he

  2072. declares that he

  2073. will never break

  2074. a bruised

  2075. reed.

  2076. When tragedy

  2077. strikes and

  2078. you're prayerless

  2079. in grief, he

  2080. isn't.

  2081. He intercedes

  2082. for you day

  2083. and night.

  2084. When you

  2085. sold him out

  2086. yet again,

  2087. again and

  2088. again and

  2089. again, his

  2090. response is

  2091. never, enough

  2092. is enough, I'm

  2093. out.

  2094. But he speaks

  2095. over and over

  2096. and over again,

  2097. child, you are

  2098. forgiven and

  2099. loved.

  2100. Child, you are

  2101. forgiven and

  2102. loved.

  2103. Child, you are

  2104. forgiven and

  2105. loved.

  2106. And when you

  2107. are ashamed of

  2108. just how small

  2109. your love is for

  2110. Jesus, he reminds

  2111. you it is not

  2112. what you pour out

  2113. in your alabaster

  2114. jars that

  2115. justifies you, but

  2116. what Jesus has

  2117. poured out in his

  2118. blood, in his

  2119. sacrifice, that

  2120. justifies you.

  2121. once we properly

  2122. see the

  2123. incalculable worth

  2124. of Jesus, then

  2125. truly from the

  2126. very bottom of

  2127. our hearts, our

  2128. testimonies will

  2129. be, Jesus, you

  2130. are worthy of it

  2131. all.

  2132. All that I have

  2133. is yours.

  2134. All that I want

  2135. to do is to

  2136. please you, to

  2137. serve you.

  2138. Even this

  2139. pathetic alabaster

  2140. jar is not

  2141. enough.

  2142. Only then can we

  2143. be consumed with

  2144. this single-minded,

  2145. wholehearted obsession.

  2146. At times, it can

  2147. feel like the

  2148. Christian life is

  2149. too complicated.

  2150. Too many things

  2151. we have to do.

  2152. We have to pray

  2153. more, evangelize

  2154. more, read

  2155. scripture more,

  2156. memorize more,

  2157. serve more,

  2158. rejoice more,

  2159. evangelize more,

  2160. worship more,

  2161. forgive more,

  2162. repent more,

  2163. disciple more,

  2164. encourage more.

  2165. The list goes on

  2166. and on and on.

2167. There is a way to

  2168. be consumed with

  2169. the tasks and the

  2170. do's of the

  2171. Christian life that

  2172. makes you miss out

  2173. on the one thing

  2174. that defines the

  2175. Christian life.

  2176. Here, this

  2177. definition from

  2178. J.C.

  2179. Ryle, a zealous

  2180. man in religion

  2181. is preeminently

  2182. a man of one

  2183. thing.

  2184. He only sees

  2185. one thing.

  2186. He cares for

  2187. one thing.

  2188. He lives for

  2189. one thing.

  2190. He is swallowed

  2191. up by one

  2192. thing and that

  2193. one thing is to

  2194. please God.

  2195. Whether he lives

  2196. or whether he

  2197. dies, whether he

  2198. is rich or whether

  2199. he is poor,

  2200. whether he

  2201. pleases men or

  2202. whether he gives

  2203. offense, whether he

  2204. is thought wise or

  2205. whether he is

  2206. thought foolish,

  2207. whether he gets

  2208. honor or whether

  2209. he gets shame,

  2210. for all of this,

  2211. the zealous man

  2212. cares nothing at

  2213. all.

  2214. He burns for

  2215. one thing and

  2216. that one thing

  2217. is to please God

  2218. and to advance

  2219. God's glory.

  2220. God's glory.

  2221. So if others

  2222. scoff at us

  2223. for the intensity

  2224. of our love,

  2225. for wasting

  2226. poor lives,

  2227. let them.

  2228. When we waste

  2229. our time

  2230. studying an

  2231. ancient book

  2232. written 2,000

  2233. years ago,

  2234. let them

  2235. scoff.

  2236. When we waste

  2237. our money by

  2238. tithing faithfully

  2239. to the church,

  2240. let them

  2241. scoff.

  2242. When we waste

  2243. our degrees

  2244. by serving

  2245. overseas,

  2246. let them

  2247. scoff.

  2248. I paraphrase

  2249. Pastor Kevin

  2250. DeYoung,

  2251. but he says

  2252. there's a kind

  2253. of tame

  2254. Christianity

  2255. that even the

  2256. unbelieving world

  2257. would approve

  2258. of.

  2259. A little

  2260. sprinkle of

  2261. religion there.

  2262. A little

  2263. dash of

  2264. moralism here.

  2265. That's all

  2266. good.

  2267. Going to

  2268. church,

  2269. a great

  2270. way to

  2271. meet friends

  2272. and to

  2273. feel supported.

  2274. Praying to

  2275. Jesus?

  2276. Sure,

  2277. that helps

  2278. your mental

  2279. health.

  2280. A tame

  2281. religion makes

  2282. sense to

  2283. them.

  2284. But over

  2285. the top,

  2286. extravagant,

  2287. radical devotion

  2288. to Jesus will

  2289. never make

  2290. sense to

  2291. them.

  2292. So when you

  2293. have the

  2294. Judases

  2295. rebuke you

  2296. for how you

  2297. are devoted

  2298. endlessly to

  2299. Jesus,

  2300. then you

  2301. know you're

  2302. on the

  2303. right path.

  2304. For even

  2305. when the

  2306. world rebukes

  2307. us,

  2308. rejects us,

  2309. spurns us,

  2310. our precious

  2311. and lovely

  2312. Jesus will

  2313. defend us.

  2314. Just as he

  2315. defended this

  2316. woman.

  2317. Not just

  2318. defend her,

  2319. but he

  2320. proclaims that

  2321. her story will

  2322. be proclaimed

  2323. throughout the

  2324. whole world.

  2325. Yes,

  2326. Jesus knows

  2327. that he will

  2328. die.

  2329. He is going

  2330. to die in

  2331. a very short

  2332. time,

  2333. but he

  2334. doesn't

  2335. anticipate

  2336. this to

  2337. conclude with

  2338. a sad

  2339. ending,

  2340. with just

  2341. merely his

  2342. death.

  2343. He knows

  2344. that this

  2345. gospel,

  2346. this good

  2347. news will

  2348. go throughout

  2349. the entire

  2350. world.

  2351. It is an

  2352. unstoppable

  2353. force that

  2354. will go to

  2355. every people

  2356. and language

  2357. and tongues.

  2358. And when

  2359. it does,

  2360. this woman's

  2361. story will

  2362. be proclaimed.

  2363. Do you

  2364. understand what

  2365. an incredible

  2366. blessing this

  2367. is?

  2368. Can you

  2369. just imagine

  2370. what she

  2371. might have

  2372. felt after

  2373. just being

  2374. rebuked

  2375. harshly by

  2376. the disciples

  2377. to hear

  2378. this kind

  2379. of response

  2380. that her

  2381. whole story

  2382. will be

  2383. proclaimed

  2384. throughout

  2385. the entire

  2386. world?

  2387. To no

  2388. other person

  2389. in all the

  2390. gospels does

  2391. Jesus make

  2392. this promise.

  2393. promise.

  2394. So,

  2395. maybe she

  2396. didn't ace

  2397. her exams.

  2398. Maybe she

  2399. never got

  2400. married and

  2401. never had

  2402. children and

  2403. had the

  2404. happily ever

  2405. after.

  2406. Maybe she

  2407. never got

  2408. her dream

  2409. internship or

  2410. job and

  2411. never made a

  2412. whole lot of

  2413. money.

  2414. Maybe she

  2415. wasn't all

  2416. that popular

  2417. and didn't

  2418. have a lot

  2419. of friends.

  2420. maybe she

  2421. never left

  2422. a meaningful

  2423. legacy in

  2424. any of

  2425. those other

  2426. areas.

  2427. But man,

  2428. she got

  2429. this one

  2430. thing right.

  2431. And now

  2432. her legacy

  2433. is cemented

  2434. throughout all

  2435. human history.

  2436. There will

  2437. be a day

  2438. and it's

  2439. coming soon

  2440. where the

  2441. musks

  2442. and the

  2443. bezoses

  2444. and the

  2445. gates of

  2446. this world

  2447. will be

  2448. irrelevant,

  2449. considered a

  2450. relic of

  2451. the past.

  2452. But this

  2453. woman's

  2454. legacy will

  2455. always be

  2456. etched on

  2457. our minds

  2458. and in

  2459. our hearts

  2460. just like

  2461. she is

  2462. today,

  2463. 2,000 years

  2464. ago in

  2465. East Cambridge,

  2466. Massachusetts,

  2467. of all

  2468. places.

  2469. And it

  2470. will be

  2471. for generation,

  2472. for generation

  2473. and generation

  2474. until Jesus

  2475. comes.

  2476. So do you

  2477. want to

  2478. build a

  2479. real

  2480. legacy?

  2481. Do you

  2482. want to

  2483. be remembered?

  2484. As the

  2485. kids used

  2486. to say,

  2487. you only

  2488. live once,

  2489. right?

  2490. You only

  2491. have one

  2492. shot at

  2493. this,

  2494. one bullet

  2495. in the

  2496. chamber.

  2497. With this

  2498. one shot

  2499. then,

  2500. live for

  2501. Jesus.

  2502. Go all

  2503. out for

  2504. him.

  2505. put all

  2506. your chips

  2507. in the

  2508. middle,

  2509. hold

  2510. nothing

  2511. back,

  2512. break

  2513. the neck

  2514. of your

  2515. alabaster

  2516. jars,

  2517. and pour

  2518. it out

  2519. on him.

  2520. Because it

  2521. will never

  2522. be wasted

  2523. on Jesus.

  2524. He is

  2525. worth it.

  2526. So to

  2527. conclude,

  2528. here are a

  2529. couple of

  2530. stanzas

  2531. from this

  2532. poem by

  2533. C.T.

  2534. Studd.

  2535. two little

  2536. lines I

  2537. heard one

  2538. day,

  2539. traveling

  2540. along

  2541. life's

  2542. busy

  2543. way,

  2544. bringing

  2545. conviction

  2546. to my

  2547. heart,

  2548. and for

  2549. my mind

  2550. would not

  2551. depart,

  2552. only one

  2553. life.

  2554. will soon

  2555. be past,

  2556. only what's

  2557. done for

  2558. Christ will

  2559. last.

  2560. Oh,

  2561. let my

  2562. love with

  2563. fur burn,

  2564. and from

  2565. the world

  2566. now let me

  2567. turn,

  2568. living for

  2569. thee and

  2570. thee alone,

  2571. bringing thee

  2572. pleasure on

  2573. thy throne.

  2574. Only one

  2575. life,

  2576. will soon

  2577. be past,

  2578. only what's

  2579. done for

  2580. Christ will

  2581. last.

  2582. Only

  2583. one life,

  2584. yes,

  2585. only one.

  2586. Now let

  2587. me say

  2588. thy will

  2589. be done,

  2590. and when

  2591. at last

  2592. I'll hear

  2593. the call,

  2594. I know,

  2595. I know

  2596. I'll say

  2597. t'was worth

  2598. it all.

  2599. Brothers and

  2600. sisters,

  2601. only one

  2602. life,

  2603. t'will

  2604. soon be

  2605. past,

  2606. only what's

  2607. done for

  2608. Christ will

  2609. last.

  2610. Let's

  2611. pray.

  2612. So we

  2613. offer,

  2614. oh God,

  2615. the little

  2616. of our

  2617. lives,

  2618. the little

  2619. of our

  2620. talents and

  2621. efforts and

  2622. money and

  2623. time,

  2624. we know

  2625. it's not

  2626. enough.

  2627. It's not

  2628. enough.

  2629. But we

  2630. give it

  2631. all.

  2632. We surrender

  2633. it all to

  2634. you as

  2635. living

  2636. sacrifices,

  2637. that you

  2638. would be

  2639. honored,

  2640. that you

  2641. would be

  2642. glorified,

  2643. and you

  2644. would be

  2645. treasured in

  2646. our hearts.

  2647. It's in

  2648. your name

  2649. we pray.

  2650. Amen.

  2651. Amen.

  2652. Amen.
