  1. All right, if you have your Bible with you, open the Romans

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  2. chapter 11, Romans chapter 11, we are beginning our Advent

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  3. Series today. And well, if you're visiting

  4. with us, I want to say, welcome to you.

  5. You've picked a good time to come.

  6. Visit, my name is Kyle a service lead Pastor here and we're

  7. jumping into Advent, which is advent, just means coming.

  8. And when we talk about Advent, what we're talking about is the

  9. Advent of Christmas time, the Advent of Jesus Christ.

  10. First coming, we're talking about the coming of our Lord and

  11. Savior Jesus Christ. As a child, as Patricia

  12. mentioned earlier, born to the Virgin Mary, according to God's

  13. plan for salvation. And so that's what we're fixing

  14. our eyes on. I think, if we're honest with

  15. ourselves honest, with one another Christmas time, as a

  16. Time, full of distractions. It's a Time.

  17. Full of lots of other things going on in our lives.

  18. It's a time, really? It's a time.

  19. Kind of full of self-centeredness can be Anyway,

  20. it highlights self-centeredness Even in our materialism,

  21. especially that begins to kind of show up.

  22. And so it's a time where the focus can be on very quickly and

  23. I think it's exactly what the enemy wants.

  24. It can be very quickly on everything except Christ

  25. everything, besides, the reason for the season as the yard signs

  26. say, right? And that's that's the case I

  27. think in our world I think often times it's the case in the

  28. church after the Christmas time, becomes about the idea of Christ

  29. being born more so than about worshiping Christ as Lord.

  30. Does that make sense. We can, we can almost idolize

  31. the Virgin birth. We can almost idolize Christ

  32. being born on a, on a silent night outside of the N or where

  33. there was no room for him and and we can idolize the things

  34. about Christmas without understanding the god.

  35. Who has come to us and that's what we don't want to do as

  36. Christians. We don't want to idolize the

  37. things about our God. We want to, we want to worship

  38. God. We don't we don't want to

  39. worship just the ideas about God.

  40. We want to worship who God truly is and so Christmas time, is it

  41. makes it easy? If you will to either Focus On

  42. Christ because it's in the songs, it's in the decorations.

  43. It's in the Patience. If you're, if you're paying

  44. attention but it's easy to miss Christ in Christmas, it's easy

  45. to miss God, the significance of the Season at Christmas time.

  46. So it's my hope that through this Advent series, what will

  47. get a chance to do is that it's going to draw our attention back

  48. to God, that our attention will be on God that our gaze may be

  49. fixated if you will on the glory of God and the communion.

  50. Coming of God, the son and so may the season.

  51. My prayer is that the season be a time where we are all as

  52. Christians as men and women boys and girls who love the Lord

  53. Jesus Christ. Where we are worshipping God?

  54. So, with our Advent series, I want us to do something.

  55. Not really different, not really unique.

  56. I hope to what we do normally, but I want us to talk about God,

  57. I want us to focus on who God is.

  58. I want us to Marvel at this, this fact For unto us.

  59. God Has Come For unto us. God has come, this is what the

  60. Advent season is about. And so the over the next few

  61. weeks were going to study God. And we've broken it down the

  62. series into these, these topics if you will.

  63. The first one today, we're going to talk about the try Unity of

  64. God or God exists in Trinity. Next week, we're going to talk

  65. about the overflowing love of God.

  66. Week after we're going to talk about a god.

  67. Unlike all others will be the Sunday before Christmas are

  68. going to look at a God who comes to us, not a God who remains

  69. distant from us. And then finally, as we set to

  70. enter into the New Year, we will talk about how to have

  71. fellowship with this Triune God. And so I'm excited for the

  72. season, the Christmas lights, the trees, the all the decor,

  73. the music, all of it gets me excited.

  74. I'd be a little happier if I wasn't having to wear summer

  75. clothing this morning, right? But it is what it is.

  76. We'll just pretend we're in Florida.

  77. All right, let me pray for us and then we'll enter into this.

  78. I've got a whiteboard today and so I'm I invite Nathan or

  79. Kimberly up here to draw for me. But I'll try Alan.

  80. I can't do a squirrel but your squirrel always kills it.

  81. So I may may have you come dressed?

  82. Draw a squirrel after church. Let's pray.

  83. Heavenly Father. We love you and God.

  84. We are approaching Really a topic that's that's bigger than

  85. I am. It's bigger than any of us.

  86. It's it far exceeds our level of understanding father, we are

  87. limited to your own revealing of yourself.

  88. As we think about the Trinity, we cannot say anything.

  89. We cannot assume anything outside of what you have said,

  90. already outside of the way that you have revealed yourself.

  91. Not only in creation, not only in the way that you act in the

  92. world but especially In your word.

  93. Father, would you open our hearts today?

  94. You open our minds today to see and to understand who you are.

  95. Father, what we're not after is Morehead knowledge.

  96. We're not after knowledge that puffs up.

  97. Lord, I don't want us to walk out of here with head spinning

  98. in such a way that we feel like we gained a bunch of knowledge

  99. and we're kind of wrestling to put together the pieces.

  100. It's My Hope father that by the help of your spirit today that

  101. we walk out of here, maybe with head spinning.

  102. But with hearts that are aflame, I pray that your spirit would

  103. have noddin us a fire. A deep love of God.

  104. I think the fact that you are trinitarian, Well, one that's

  105. unique, there's no other trinitarian God.

  106. So you are the one true. God, we confess that.

  107. But the fact that you're trinitarian makes it possible

  108. for us to know you to understand you on some level, maybe even a

  109. level that's growing and especially it makes it possible

  110. for us to fellowship with you. And so, Lord help us today to

  111. have hearts that are filled with worship hearts that are filled

  112. with awe. as we behold the one true, God this morning, God.

  113. I am finite. I am imperfect.

  114. I am oftentimes unfaithful to you.

  115. I am a sinner with darkened. Eyes gazing upon the

  116. excellencies of God today. And so, the task is to daunting.

  117. And I pray that your spirits speak today.

  118. You help us to know you as only you could do Lord.

  119. We ask these things in the name of your son.

  120. Jesus Christ. Amen.

  121. Amen. So there are a great many things

  122. to be said about God and it is my hope that I can show you some

  123. of those today and what will look at but we cannot exhaust.

  124. What is to be known about God. In fact, one of the Beauties

  125. about heaven, one of the realities of heaven.

  126. When you get to, when you as a Christian passed from this life,

  127. from Death to life, eternal, one of the Beauties We Know About

  128. Heaven is that we will go On growing in our understanding

  129. growing in our knowledge of God for eternity that there will be

  130. new excellencies, new things. In many ways.

  131. We will no longer see in part will see in full but there will

  132. still be things to discover about God.

  133. This is one of the realities, one of the beautiful realities

  134. of Heaven. You'll never reach the end of

  135. what is to be known about God. This is one of the things that

  136. makes being a Christian now today in this life so wonderful

  137. is you'll never get to the end of the knowledge of God.

  138. You'll never go beyond who God is.

  139. You'll never arrive at something and say well, I figured God out.

  140. And if we could figure God out, totally, if we could totally

  141. know who he is, we can know everything about him.

  142. Well then I declare that he would cease to be God.

  143. Something else must be God. And so, we would probably grow

  144. tired of him. We would grow weary of him

  145. because he would be known already.

  146. We get bored with God, and some of you today, may find yourself

  147. bored with God, but it's not because God has been exhausted.

  148. It's that your Pursuit is waning.

  149. Your pursued is felling. Maybe sin has crept in maybe

  150. something's keeping you from going deeper with the Lord.

  151. And so today, I hope that some of that will be ignited in you

  152. again, but we will not exhaust. God, that's one thing that Paul

  153. gets out, in Romans chapter 11, it's one of the great short.

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  154. Statements about God and it comes at the end of Romans

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  155. chapter 11. Now if you, if you've read the

  156. book of Romans, what you know about Romans 1 through 11, is

  157. that Paul is, he's exclaiming that the sovereignty of God

  158. especially in Salvation And he's talking about the relationship

  159. of God to Abraham. He's talking about the

  160. covenants, he's talking about how righteousness is by faith

  161. alone. In Christ alone, he's talking

  162. about how God has come to us in Christ Jesus that he became for

  163. us, what we could not be which is sin.

  164. So that we might become the righteousness of God and he's

  165. laying it all out there. He's saying that man is sinful.

  166. All mankind have fallen short of the glory of God and they're in

  167. need of a savior, he goes on and on, And he gets to these

  168. realities and Romans 8, we will never be separated from the love

  169. of God. He talks about life in the

  170. spirit chapter six and seven and eight.

  171. And chapter 9. We see the sovereignty of God in

  172. ten over salvation, chapter 10. He talks about how he's using

  173. mankind to preach the good news that men and women boys and

  174. girls might come to know Jesus Christ and faith comes by

  175. hearing hearing by the word of God.

  176. How will they know unless they are told?

  177. And so every believer is in commission to be a missionary or

  178. at least missional in the way that they live spreading the

  179. good news of Christ, Jesus. And chapter 11 is talking about

  180. Israel. And And how he hopes for their

  181. Redemption. And how there's a new Vine

  182. that's been grafted in the Gentiles.

  183. And, and then and then he just ends in Romans 11:33 3:36.

    Romans 11:33

  184. He says he just burst into doxology, do you know what?

  185. Doxology is? Doxology is praise.

  186. You can't have doxology without theology because if you're

  187. worshiping without right, understanding your likely

  188. worshipping a false god, you're worshiping something you've made

  189. up. That would be idolatry.

  190. And so worship with theologies laid out, 11 chapters of

  191. theology. This is who God is in your

  192. salvation, Roman Believers. And then he burst into doxology

  193. and he says, Oh, The Depths and the riches and the wisdom, and

  194. the knowledge of God. How unsearchable are his

  195. judgments and how inscrutable his ways for who has known the

  196. mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?

  197. Another one another words who can know him?

  198. Who could teach him something? Who could tell him something?

  199. The verse 35 he says or who has given a gift to him that he

  200. might be repaid. Another word who has given

  201. something to God that. Now, God owes you The reverse is

  202. true, right? That God has given everything to

  203. us, and so we owe him our lives. Gladly, oh, him our lives.

  204. And then in verse 36 we have, what is?

  205. I think one of the best short statements about the nature of

  206. God, he says for from him and through him, and to him are all

  207. things to him, be glory forever. Amen.

  208. Wow, for from him is saying something about God, that all

  209. things. Every thing in our world and the

  210. universe everything in creation comes from God.

  211. Now, we're not talking about just created things.

  212. We're talking about salvation, we're talking about any kind of

  213. blessings from the Lord, everything Paul is saying comes

  214. from God. It doesn't just come from God

  215. though. It comes through God, which

  216. gives us an insight into how the Trinity works.

  217. There's going to be different persons as we look at this.

  218. There's different persons in these persons have different

  219. different roles if you will and expressing God.

  220. And I'll walk through this in a moment.

  221. But through God, we receive all things from God, come all things

  222. through God, we receive all things and to God, all things

  223. exist, which is why Paul says to God be the glory forever.

  224. Amen. So everything exists for him.

  225. Everything comes from him, everything comes through him and

  226. then exists to be given unto him.

  227. Especially in ascribing Him. Praise ascribing Him Glory.

  228. It's the last line there that really ought to stop us in our

  229. tracks and lead us to worship God.

  230. I don't think we can hear it too many times, so I'll read it one

  231. more time for from him and through him.

  232. And to him are all things, everybody say.

  233. All all things. The thing I want to lay before

  234. you today is this is that if you're taking notes, you can

  235. write this down, God is self-existent.

  236. For from him and through him. God is all sufficient.

  237. So got a self-existent all-sufficient and he is trying.

  238. From him through him to him all things.

  239. Now it is the try Unity of God, that makes him self existent in

  240. all sufficient. It's this tri-unity that

  241. separates him from all other gods.

  242. And so when we consider the try Unity of God, there's there's

  243. three things that we need to have on our mind.

  244. There's three things that we need to think about.

  245. When we think about the try Unity of God, we might call

  246. these pillars. If you will foundations there.

  247. What uphold the try Unity of God.

  248. Their kid. Their core beliefs.

  249. And we must believe these things to Christians.

  250. The first is this that there is one Essence in God.

  251. There is one Essence in God. The second is that there are

  252. three persons in God. So there's one Essence three

  253. persons. And then finally each person is

  254. fully gone. These are the three pillars of

  255. the Trinity that we must believe to be trinitarian Christians.

  256. In other words, Orthodox Christians.

  257. True Christians. There's one, Essence, three

  258. persons in each person is fully God.

  259. So let's consider this first one.

  260. God is one in essence. How is it that from him and

  261. through him and to him are all things.

  262. Well, it's because of his essence.

  263. The word essence means being God is his Essence God is.

  264. His being God is God. That's about as close as we can

  265. come to describing the essence of God.

  266. I'm going to take some shots at it here in a little bit.

  267. But ultimately, the best way to describe God is as God describe

  268. God, when he said about himself, I am who I am.

  269. I am. God.

  270. God is describing his Essence. When he says, I am.

  271. He's describing exactly who he is.

  272. And we might say, well, how does that describe who he is?

  273. Because he's saying, he is who he is and it's not dependent on

  274. anything outside of him. He is.

  275. So, if I say I am, my husband was dependent on something

  276. outside of me, is, depending on whether or not, I really have a

  277. wife or not, right? I had a thought this morning as

  278. I was thinking about this sermon, this is like, you know,

  279. boxing outside your weight class a little bit thinking about the

  280. Trinity. And I thought to myself, well,

  281. you've done that at least once, before you convince Patricia to

  282. marry you, right? It's okay to agree. but even

  283. that pales in comparison to trying to understand the

  284. trinity, But we are fighting outside of our weight class of

  285. it here. But God's Essence, is his being

  286. Essences. What you are.

  287. It's now we can only speak of God's Essence by analogy because

  288. we can't fully comprehend the essence of God in a physical

  289. form. God is Spirit, John says, and

  290. the Apostle, John writes in John 4:24.

    John 4:24

  291. Further God is not made of a bunch of ingredients.

  292. God is not like your Christmas dinner.

  293. There are not a bunch of ingredients that have come

  294. together to make a meal. This is not what God is God. has

  295. a being, he is a being and so the substance of God is God.

  296. He is divine, amen. Now, there are these documents

  297. in church history called confessions and and we can think

  298. what we want about. Confessions maybe you've never

  299. read a confession, maybe you have read confessions might be

  300. your for them, maybe you're against them, but one of the

  301. things that make confessions helpful is that they summarize

  302. core beliefs really well. They do a good job of

  303. summarizing core beliefs of the Christian faith.

  304. And so whether you see it in confessions or like the Apostles

  305. Creed, Is one that maybe you guys are familiar with.

  306. There's different Creed's out there that summarize what we

  307. believe about God. And so a confession is similar

  308. to a Creed except it's much more exhaustive.

  309. It's not a few paragraphs. It is hundreds of paragraphs.

  310. and so there's one called the London, Baptist confession of

  311. faith and it describes God, And this way and I just want to read

  312. this to you says the Lord our God is one.

  313. The only living and true God. He is self-existent.

  314. And infinite and being and Perfection is Essence.

  315. Cannot be understood by anyone, but him.

  316. Okay, I'm going to read a little further, but I want to, this is

  317. another problem. This is a bit more like a Sunday

  318. school class by the way. This is a another problem with

  319. the Trinity is if we try to describe him, we tend to get

  320. into heresies. You know, if you say that he is

  321. like, he's like water, he can be icy can be Vapor, he can be

  322. water or fluid, that's actually a heresy that's called modalism.

  323. And so that is not a good way me.

  324. I'm a father, I'm a husband. I'm a pastor would be modalism.

  325. And so thatís, not three distinct persons.

  326. I'm describing one person who does three different things.

  327. This is not what God is, God is we're not Believers in modalism,

  328. modern-day example of modalism, is the United Pentecostal church

  329. and their view of Oneness? God, which is to say that God

  330. exists in three modes or moods. He can be the father, he can be

  331. the sunning. Be the But he's not all three is

  332. not distinct at different times. I've got three distinct persons.

  333. So so this is a problem so we want to be careful, not to get

  334. into that. You can equally fall into

  335. trouble and start trying to draw things on a board for people.

  336. And so, what were attempting to do is really dangerous.

  337. I know you can feel the fear, right?

  338. So, but what I want to do is I want to, I want to try to show

  339. you in a picture, what it is, we're saying because this, this

  340. helped me comprehend. And I'm still in this from, from

  341. my professor in seminary, Jeff Johnson, because he draws really

  342. good art on the board. Often post pictures of one day,

  343. but what I want to do is make a mark up here for his Essence,

  344. okay? So let's just assume that God's

  345. Essence. Is this circle?

  346. Okay, this is God. This is this is his Essence,

  347. okay? Now let me further describe for

  348. you, what, I know that small for many of you back there, I

  349. apologize. We're being a back road.

  350. Baptist doesn't pay off today. So God, this is the essence of

  351. God. And let me explain to you a

  352. little bit for continuing to read from the confession.

  353. What we're saying about the essence of God.

  354. Remember, it's only understood by God.

  355. But it is who he is. It's his being, he is a

  356. perfectly, pure spirit. He is invisible and has no body,

  357. no parts, no changeable Passions. and so, when we read

  358. things like the right hand of God, the backside of God, these

  359. are See if I can. Anybody remember the word you

  360. learned in Sunday School? And throw for morphisms super

  361. exciting work, right? I'll not try to spell it but

  362. anthropomorphism is where we try to ascribe to God human

  363. characteristics so that we can understand him better.

  364. God speaks to us in his word and anthropomorphism is because we

  365. are finite and he is not so he helps us to understand some

  366. things about who he is, all right?

  367. But God is Spirit, you get to heaven.

  368. You're not going to see God. The father.

  369. You will see God, the son, amen. God the son will be present.

  370. And you'll know the presence of God the father.

  371. So he's a perfectly pure Spirit. He has he's invisible.

  372. No body parts, so changeable passions, he alone has

  373. immortality dwelling in life that no one can approach.

  374. Again, I'm still reading from the confession, here he is.

  375. Unchangeable You might call this immutable, he's unchangeably

  376. doesn't change. He's immense, which means he can

  377. be near to us, but he is eternal all sorry.

  378. Eminent would be near to us, he's immense, which means he's

  379. large. Eternal means that he has

  380. neither beginning, nor ending he's in comprehensible, not

  381. totally but fully right we can know something.

  382. When comprehend some things about God, which can't fully

  383. knowing At least not now he's Almighty and every way he's

  384. infinite he's absolutely holy. So we might just I'm just going

  385. to write a few words up here to help us.

  386. He's holy he's eternal. He's wise.

  387. He's free. God is not bound.

  388. As we are bound, he's completely free.

  389. And he's absolute. Amen.

  390. He's absolutely. So what we're thinking of God

  391. and right now, I'm just describing the Triune God, I'm

  392. subscribing, the Father, the Son, the spirit.

  393. This is some of the things, not all of the things, some of the

  394. things about who God is, Okay, the this is the essence of God,

  395. he's completely self existent. Now, the second thing we see

  396. about God says, since is that he is all-sufficient, so he

  397. self-existent, he's not dependent on anyone else and so,

  398. therefore he is all sufficient. Now, again the London, Baptist

  399. confession of faith is helpful. It says that God has all life.

  400. Oh, Glory goodness and blessedness in and of himself.

  401. He alone is also sufficient and himself.

  402. You and I are not all sufficient and ourselves, we're dependent

  403. one on God, but even more than that, were dependent on many

  404. other things. God is Not.

  405. So he is all-sufficient. He does not need any creature.

  406. He is made. He's not needy of us.

  407. Will talk about this more next week as we talked about.

  408. Creation. But we're a product of his love.

  409. He has made, he's not need of any creature.

  410. He's made, nor does he derive any Glory from them so it

  411. doesn't doesn't gain his glory from creationist not in creating

  412. that he gets Glory. Now it said he's glorious before

  413. but what he does is he demonstrates his glory in

  414. creation him, right? He demonstrates his glory in

  415. them. The confession says, buy them to

  416. them and upon them. He alone is the source of all

  417. being and everything is from him through him and to him which

  418. again comes from our passage in Romans 11:36.

    Romans 11:36

  419. He has absolute Sovereign rule over All Creatures to act

  420. through them, for them, or upon them as he pleases and his side,

  421. everything is open and visible. There's nothing hidden from God,

  422. he sees all things, always all the time from eternity past to

  423. Eternity future. God is Bound by time, he's not

  424. bound by perception. He's not bound by anything.

  425. He's Limitless. His knowledge is therefore

  426. infinite's and it's infallible. There's no fault in God.

  427. It doesn't depend upon any creature.

  428. So for him nothing is contingent or uncertain.

  429. God is certain amen. How many of you want to worship

  430. a wishy-washy? God, a God, who is uncertain?

  431. As you are uncertain. Have you ever gone through an

  432. uncertain time? Am I alone in this?

  433. There's two of us. Cool, 34.

  434. All right, now you get the drift.

  435. Alright, it's everybody. We've all gone through

  436. uncertainty and what we know about God is that he is not

  437. uncertain. God is certain Because

  438. everything is ordered by his hand.

  439. He's absolutely holy and all his plans.

  440. Again, I'm reading and all his works and then all his commands.

  441. And isil in the Baptist confession of Faith chapter 2

  442. paragraph 2. Now this is the essence of God.

  443. What we see is that God is completely self existent in all

  444. sufficient. He's completely self existent in

  445. all sufficient, just in his Essence.

  446. Justin, who who he is. Let me read you some verses.

  447. Therefore as student the eating of food offered to Idols, we

  448. know that an idol has no real existence, and that there is no

  449. God, but one 1st Corinthians, 8:4 First Corinthians 8:6 yet

    1 Corinthians 8:6

  450. for us. There is one.

  451. God the father from whom are all things and for whom we exist and

  452. one Lord Jesus Christ through whom are all things and through

  453. whom we exist Deuteronomy 6:4 hear o Israel.

    Deuteronomy 6:4

  454. The Lord Our God. The Lord is one Exodus 3:14.

    Exodus 3:14

  455. God said to Moses, I am who I am and he said, say this to the

  456. people of Israel, I am has sent you.

  457. Sorry, sent me to you. First, Timothy 1:17 to the king

  458. of the ages Immortal invisible, the holy God.

  459. The only God be honor and Glory forever and ever.

  460. Amen. You see what we're getting?

  461. I have this one God. This God is eternal.

  462. Is all-sufficient, he self-existent?

  463. For I the Lord do not change. Therefore, you are children of

  464. Jacob. Are not consumed.

  465. Malachi 3:16 unchangeable, Jeremiah, 23, 23.

    Malachi 3:16

  466. Am I am I a god at hand? Declares the Lord and not a god,

  467. far away, his Eminence, he's near to us.

  468. God can be both out there in both right here.

  469. Isaiah 63 and one called to the other and said, holy holy, holy

  470. is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of his

  471. glory. Everything exists to him, it's

  472. full of his glory. Psalm 115 3, our God is in the

  473. heavens, and he does all that. He pleases, there's nothing

  474. forwarding the plans of God, there's nothing disrupting the

  475. plans of God. He is in heaven, and he's doing

  476. all that he pleases. One of the things that that were

  477. we try to help our children understand at an early age that

  478. God and Satan are not on the same playing field.

  479. They're not both all-powerful all-knowing all presence, Satan

  480. is limited. He's a Satan is created by God

  481. and so he's bound and ways that God is not bound.

  482. And so God and Satan are not up here together.

  483. God, God is won the battle. Amen.

  484. They do oppose one another. And make no mistake.

  485. Satan is certainly wanting to influence.

  486. And destroy the lives of people, especially believers.

  487. But God is one the Bible. Amen, he can be trusted.

  488. He is faithful. John 5 26 for as the father has

  489. life in himself, this is Jesus speaking.

  490. So he has granted the son also to have life in himself.

  491. All sufficient, 148 13, Psalm 148 13.

  492. Let them praise the name of the Lord for his name alone as

  493. exalted. His majesty is above Earth and

  494. Heaven Hebrews 4:13. And no creature is hidden from

    Hebrews 4:13

  495. his sights, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him

  496. to whom we must give account. So not only is this God, holy

  497. and eternal, and absolute wise and free and so on and so on, In

  498. other words, what we describe as if this God is unlike you.

  499. He's unlike me, he's perfect. And I'm imperfect, and I must

  500. give an account to him one day. You must give an account to him

  501. one day. Psalm, 145 17, the Lord is

  502. righteous in all his ways. Again, there's something I can't

  503. say about myself and he's kind and all his works.

  504. I still can't say that about myself.

  505. God is altogether different than you and I, and he's altogether

  506. different than other gods as we'll see in the coming weeks.

  507. Now here's what we know about God is that he exists in three

  508. persons. So, this is pillar number two,

  509. he exists in three persons in regards to the Trinity, we might

  510. use the word person and we were right to use the word person.

  511. But what we know about the word person is that it has a quite

  512. different meaning now than it did, when it was first

  513. established, its used differently.

  514. As we're thinking about the person's of God, Then it is as

  515. we think about person the word in everyday life, so it's not

  516. like me. Describing myself an allen me

  517. and Alan are two separate individual and sorry,

  518. independent individuals, right? We exist outside of one another

  519. apart from one another. But God is not this way.

  520. His persons are not this way. God exists in three persons, the

  521. Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  522. Another word that was introduced and the early church is they're

  523. trying to explain who God is. And that the Council of nicaea

  524. they begin to and AD 325, they begin to get some of these

  525. things nailed down so that people could understand it.

  526. One of the things about that Council, that's quite funny is,

  527. there's a There's a story about a man named Saint Nicholas.

  528. Anybody knows? Saint Nicholas right?

  529. You know, Saint Nicholas was a bishop in a place called Myra

  530. and I know that Saint. Nicholas was a bishop in a place

  531. called Myra Saint. Nicholas was present at the

  532. Council of nicaea Council of nicaea was assembled because

  533. there was a man named areas who was claiming that Jesus was not

  534. Eternal, like God, is that he had, he had a beginning.

  535. So he was saying he's not God. It's different than God is Not

  536. eternally begotten. And so they assembled this

  537. Council because he's teachings were getting out of control.

  538. They symbolize Council of nicaea to settle this debate and at one

  539. point, in the debate, or in the, the talks, Saint Nicholas took

  540. offense to the fact that Arius was claiming that Jesus is not

  541. God. How could someone disrespect God

  542. this way? The Son of God this way and so

  543. Saint Nicholas Santa Claus goes across the room.

  544. Slaps areas in the face. How dare you speak this way?

  545. About the son of God. It was a big deal, it's a really

  546. big deal. And so he ends up on suspension

  547. for a little while investigation done, he's reinstated.

  548. But it's quite interesting Council of nicaea settled this

  549. debate about the Trinity, it's settled.

  550. This debate about is Jesus, the son of God.

  551. And one of the things that come out of, that is an understanding

  552. of God, the Father God, the son, and God, the spirit, being the

  553. three persons in God, The word they use was the word

  554. subsistence now. The word subsistence is this

  555. idea that it it is again, we're we got to get, we got to be

  556. careful with word pictures but it's the idea that this is under

  557. the essence. that the essence is Is primary and the subsistence

  558. is something comes out of the essence of it, but it's not a

  559. part from, it's not separate from it.

  560. And this is where we get the person's, this is where they

  561. come in. So, one of the ways we met, if

  562. we're going to draw this and border on heresy, one of the

  563. things you might do is you would, you know, have your

  564. circles in their lap? Where you have the father?

  565. The son. Spirit.

  566. But holy spirit. So what we know about the

  567. Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit is that they are of the

  568. essence of God that they're not apart from the essence of God,

  569. they exist, within the essence of God, right?

  570. And even drawing it this way, is not great, but what I'm trying

  571. to show is that there are characteristics that the sun has

  572. that the father doesn't have and that the spirit has that the

  573. father, and the son don't have, there's characteristics about

  574. how they operate so we might say that the son is God.

  575. The father is God, the holy spirit is God, but the spirit is

  576. not the son. The spirit is not the father of

  577. the father is not the son. The father is not the spirit,

  578. and the sun is not the Father, the Son is not the Holy Spirit.

  579. Clear as mud right there are three distinct persons in God.

  580. Again the London Baptist confession of faith is helpful

  581. here. This was written in 1689.

  582. So again, it was at a time where they're trying to Define things

  583. for the church especially as they were up against Roman

  584. Catholicism. This Divine, an infinite being

  585. consists of three, real persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy

  586. Spirit, these three have the same substance power in

  587. eternity. Each having the whole Divine

  588. Essence, without this Divine Essence, being divided So each

  589. has the Divine Essence without it being divided.

  590. So again, just using a few turns, not all the things that

  591. we would use to describe the character of God the nature and

  592. character of God is attributes just using a few of his

  593. attributes. We would say that the holy

  594. spirit is all-wise, all wholly free Eternal absolutes.

  595. We said the sun, possesses all of those things.

  596. The father possesses all the things because that is the

  597. essence of God. There's nothing in his Essence

  598. that the spirit doesn't have or that the sun doesn't have.

  599. The father doesn't have. They all have the essence of God

  600. though. They might operate in a

  601. different fashion again. Will see the their operation

  602. more in the coming days, coming weeks.

  603. So let me go to some proof text. Again just to show three,

  604. distinct persons, first John 5:7, for there are three that

    1 John 5:7

  605. Testify the father, son and spirit Matthew 28:19.

    Matthew 28:19

  606. Go therefore and Make Disciples of all Nations, baptizing them

  607. in the name of the father, and of the son and of the holy

  608. spirit's. Jesus would not say this.

  609. If they were not all three God, second Corinthians 13:14 Again,

    2 Corinthians 13:14

  610. probably one of the best short statements about the Trinity

  611. that we have in scripture, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  612. the love of God, the Father And The Fellowship of the Holy

  613. Spirit, be with you all, John 14 11.

  614. Jesus is speaking says, believe me that I am in the father and

  615. the father is in me. Other words, we have the same

  616. essence or else. Believe on account of The Works

  617. themselves, John 1:14, the word became flesh and dwelt among us.

    John 1:14

  618. And we have seen his glory. Glory, as of the only son from

  619. the father full of grace and truth, Versus at Patricia.

  620. Read this morning, John chapter 1 verses 1 through 5.

    John 1:1–5

  621. We see that the word existed in the beginning with God.

  622. The word is Jesus. John 1:18.

    John 1:18

  623. No one has ever seen God. The only God who is at the

  624. father's side, but Jesus Christ has made him known to us John

    John 15:26

  625. 15:26. But when the helper comes

  626. talking about the Holy Spirit, whom I will send, so, Jesus is

  627. speaking to you from the father. So, again, holy spirit is coming

  628. to you. I will send him from the father,

  629. Jesus sang, the spirit of Truth, who proceeds from the father, he

  630. will bear witness about me. So again there's three distinct

  631. persons. But all of the same Essence,

  632. Galatians 4:6 and because you are Sons, God has sent the

    Galatians 4:6

  633. spirit of his son into our hearts.

  634. Crying Abba Father. So, because you are Sons, the

  635. father has sent the spirit of Christ.

  636. The Holy Spirit into your heart that you too might cry of a

  637. father, just as Christ has and maybe one of the best instances

  638. is the baptism of Jesus Christ. When our Lord goes down into the

  639. water and he comes up at John's baptism.

  640. The Holy Spirit descends on him like a dove.

  641. And so we have the we have Jesus, the son, present the Son

  642. of God present at the Holy Spirit, descending on him like a

  643. dove. And then we have the voice of

  644. the father from Heaven speaking and saying this is my son in

  645. whom I'm well pleased three, distinct persons each of these

  646. persons finally third pillar I'll Rush a little from here is

  647. fully God. Each person is fully God, the

  648. father is not derived from anyone.

  649. In the beginning Genesis 1:1 declares was God.

    Genesis 1:1

  650. When was in the beginning, I don't know.

  651. Just in the beginning was God. He's neither forgotten.

  652. Nor is he proceeding from anyone?

  653. The essence of God existed in the beginning, God has always

  654. been. And we know about the sun is

  655. that he is eternally, begotten of the father, there's never

  656. been a time without the son. The Holy Spirit proceeds from

  657. the father and the son is Jesus makes clear in John chapter, 16,

  658. all three are infinite's. All three are without beginning.

  659. All three our presence in creation have the spirit of God

  660. hovering over The deeps. You have Jesus.

  661. The word is it subscribe to him later and especially in

  662. Colossians. And in John you have the word of

  663. God speaking. And you have the father there,

  664. orchestrating the whole thing. And so all three are infinite

  665. without beginning and therefore only one God who is not to be

  666. divided in nature or being. If these three are distinguished

  667. by several distinctive characteristics and personal

  668. relations, and that's where I'm saying, we'll get into some of

  669. that as we go through the series.

  670. So God is Not 3 and 1 in the same way, we don't have a

  671. contradiction here. It sounds like a contradiction

  672. but it's not a contradiction because he is, he is one

  673. essence. But three persons in each of

  674. these persons are the essence, or of the essence.

  675. And so each person is distinct in characteristics.

  676. And in relation yet fully God. Amen.

  677. This is the prime tenets of our faith.

  678. If we can understand the Trinity, we can be in fellowship

  679. with God. In a right way, in a way that is

  680. delightful in a way that has life to it.

  681. I don't think you have to fully understand it to be in

  682. Fellowship. I'm just saying, as you begin to

  683. understand these things more and more, your fellowship flourishes

  684. right. There are many people who don't

  685. understand any of these things who are True Believers because

  686. God has saved them, amen. I'm just saying as we grow in

  687. our faith, we want to know these things so that we can have right

  688. fellowship with God. God.

  689. Isaiah 45:21 through 22 declare and present your case.

    Isaiah 45:21–22

  690. Let them take counsel together who told this long ago, who

  691. declared a devold was it? Not I the lord and there is no

  692. other God besides me a righteous God and a savior.

  693. There is none besides me. Everybody.

  694. Listen, turn to me and be saved. All the ends of the Earth for I

  695. am God, and there is no other thus, says the Lord, the king of

  696. Israel, and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts.

  697. I am the first and I am, the last besides me, there is no

  698. God. Who is like me, let him Proclaim

  699. it. Let him declare and said it

  700. before me. Since I appointed an ancient

  701. people, let them declare what is to come and what will happen,

  702. fear not nor be afraid. I have not told you for have I

  703. not told you from of old and declared it.

  704. And you are my Witnesses. Is there a god besides me?

  705. There is no Rock. I know.

  706. Not any God says. Amen.

  707. Exodus 15:11 who is Like You O Lord.

    Exodus 15:11

  708. Among the gods who is like you Majestic in Holiness.

  709. Awesome and glorious Deeds doing wonders.

  710. Brothers and sisters. I asked you, who, who is like

  711. our God No. Deuteronomy 435 to you.

  712. It was shown that you might know that the Lord is God, there is

  713. no other besides him Deuteronomy, 32 29.

  714. See now that I even I am he and there is no, God beside me, I

  715. kill and I make alive, I wound and I heal, and there is none

  716. that can deliver out of my hand, amen.

  717. For Samuel to to there is none. Holy like the Lord for there is

  718. none besides you. There is no Rock like our God

  719. first Kings 860. That all the peoples of the

  720. earth. May know that the Lord is God,

  721. there is no other. Amen.

  722. There is one God. And he is the God and this the

  723. Christian God and this God is one in essence, three in persons

  724. all of which are equally God, fully God.

  725. He self-existent, he's all sufficient, he's Triune, and he

  726. is worthy worthy of our worship. He alone is worthy of our

  727. worship. He alone is worthy of ascribing

  728. Glory to our lives. Are meant to be spent for his

  729. glory and make no mistake, whether you live for God, or you

  730. live against God, you will bring God glory because he is just in

  731. all his judgments. We need to be a people who amen

  732. a little better. He is just and all his judgments

  733. you will not you will not rebel against God in such a way that

  734. you proved him to be a liar or prove him to be false.

  735. You will not mock. God, God sits in the heavens and

  736. he does all that, he pleases. There is one true God.

  737. Now we're going to learn more in the coming weeks about his

  738. character. I encourage you but because some

  739. of this seems a bit maybe heavy-handed that this is who

  740. God is but we must understand who God is before we can talk

  741. about the overflowing of God's love.

  742. It just won't matter to us if we don't know who God is so we must

  743. have an understanding of who God is if we want to know the love

  744. of God and next week, we're going to talk more and more

  745. about this overflowing love of God.

  746. The point of today the point of knowing who God is is that he's

  747. worthy of our worship, he's worthy of our service.

  748. He's worthy of our obedience and whatever else he might ask us to

  749. do. Whatever else he might demand of

  750. us. He's worthy of it.

  751. And the thing is is you can trust that his demands are good

  752. and right because he's righteous.

  753. He's holy, he's perfect, he's not evil.

  754. Again, the confession in Chapter 2 paragraph. 2, it says angels

  755. and human beings 02, him all the worship, all the service, all

  756. the obedience that creatures Odes of the Creator and whatever

  757. else. He's pleased to require of them.

  758. In Chapter 2 paragraph 3. It says the truth of the Trinity

  759. is the foundation of all of our fellowship with God and of our

  760. comforting dependence on him. The beauty of the Trinity is

  761. that we know that he is not like us.

  762. The beauty of the Trinity is that he is unlike all other

  763. gods. The beauty of the Trinity is

  764. that he's Dependable. He is worthy of our worship.

  765. He's worthy of Our Lives. He's worthy of our faith or

  766. trust. And if you haven't depended on

  767. God, yet, if you haven't put your faith in God, yet for the

  768. Salvation of your sins. Then today is the day of

  769. salvation don't, wait, don't tarry place.

  770. Your faith in Jesus Christ today.

  771. God, the Father sent God, the son.

  772. Again, I'll get into more of this but I can't leave you

  773. hanging. I read a story.

  774. Once Martyn, lloyd-jones fantastic preacher used to

  775. preach a, an Evangelistic sermon in the mornings, and then on

  776. Sunday, well thing is other way around.

  777. But on Sunday nights, he would kind of bring a close to

  778. whatever Cliffhanger he left on Sunday mornings.

  779. Well, between Sunday morning and Sunday night, some fires broke

  780. out across England. And many of the people who were

  781. present Sunday morning were not present Sunday night.

  782. Many of which died. And Martin lloyd-jones said, I

  783. never again left the congregation hanging.

  784. He had to know. I don't want to leave you

  785. hanging this morning, there's a lot to say and we will say, but

  786. what we need to know this morning is that God is worthy of

  787. faith that you should place your faith in God.

  788. God sent his only son Jesus Christ to be what you couldn't

  789. be which is perfect to die death, which you couldn't die.
