  1. Well, good morning to you guys. It's good to see you today.

  2. I hope that you have had a good week, good weekend, and it's

  3. good to see your smiling faces and all that.

  4. My name is Kyle. If you're visiting with us, I

  5. serve as the lead Pastor here, I want to say thank you so much

  6. for for being here today. Glad that you're here.

  7. If you have your Bible with you which I hope you do, you're in

  8. church, we should bring our Bibles to church open to

  9. habakkuk chapter 3. Habakkuk chapter 3.

Habakkuk 3 chapter mention Habakkuk 3 chapter mention

  10. You'll find that toward the end of your new testament, kind of

  11. in the middle of the Minor Prophets there and comes just

  12. after noon, a whom and just before.

  13. Zephaniah. So we've been doing this for

  14. three weeks now so maybe maybe it's getting easier to find it.

  15. Habakkuk chapter 3, this series that we've been going through,

    Habakkuk 3 chapter mention

  16. we've subtitled because it comes from verse 4 of chapter 2.

  17. The righteous live by faith. God says there that the

  18. righteous shall live by his faith.

  19. And that's really the point of the book of habakkuk is this

  20. learning to live by faith as a righteous person as someone who

  21. loves the Lord, someone who's devoted to God, someone, who

  22. would consider himself or herself to be God's people,

  23. they've hidden themselves on this end of things.

  24. Anyway, not habakkuk stay, but in this end of things hidden

  25. themselves in Christ, and what this does This book does is it

  26. explores habakkuk complaints to God.

  27. So habakkuk goes to God and complains about a couple of

  28. things and I'll get to those in a moment.

  29. It explores God's difficult to understand response.

  30. And then what habakkuk learns in chapter 3, which is where we

  31. are. Today, is where we'll conclude

  32. our Series in habakkuk habakkuk learns.

  33. A holy contentment, a holy contentment.

  34. I got to have a fun conversation with the kids this week about

  35. contentment. How many of you know that as a

  36. child and maybe even now you wanted things all the time,

  37. right? Like you would get something and

  38. you would play with it for a little bit and then in the next

  39. moment, Possibly or the next day or the next week, he'd be like,

  40. but I need this one or I need this version of writer.

  41. This new thing is out, right? What doesn't really change in

  42. our lives except as we get older except that discontentment shows

  43. up in ways that maybe maybe seem to us less trivial, right?

  44. Like, I don't want this circumstance in my life.

  45. I want that circumstance. I don't want this persecution.

  46. I want that piece. I don't want this disease.

  47. I want that health. I don't want this marriage.

  48. I want that marriage. I don't want this friendship.

  49. I want that friendship. I don't want to be in this home

  50. group. I want to be in that home group.

  51. I don't want to see what I'm saying, and we think, because

  52. we're adults and reasoning through things were very

  53. spiritual people. Now, We think that what we're

  54. doing is less trivial than wanting this or that toy as a

  55. child. Contentment is really hard to

  56. learn. And you cannot learn contentment

  57. without going through major instances of discontentment.

  58. Contentment doesn't come to you. In a moment's notice, you don't

  59. wake up one day and say I've reached the moment of

  60. contentment in my life. Contentment comes with trial and

  61. sent. It comes with suffering,

  62. contentment comes with having had something and then having

  63. lost it. It comes with being high and

  64. then experiencing great lows. Contentment comes in the School

  65. of Hard Knocks as they say. Contentment is not easy.

  66. It's not a fun thing to learn, it's nothing that we grow up.

  67. Wake up, grow up, whatever saying I want to learn how to be

  68. more content. A prayer that we probably don't,

  69. pray that we should pray, is whatever it takes.

  70. Lord, teach me a holy contentment.

  71. So, scary prayer to say anything to the Lord, like whatever it

  72. takes, teach me blank. Right?

  73. But we should we absolutely should.

  74. And so what we see today is that habakkuk learns contentment in

  75. this back and forth with God that he's been through.

  76. Let me pray for us before I before I start preaching.

  77. Father we love you and we thank you for your word.

  78. Got a I think you that you have not given us a book with

  79. frivolous, happy dancing on rainbow words, that make no

  80. sense for our lives. That make no sense in a broken

  81. world that make no sense in a place where there is Decay and

  82. destruction and death. But father, you have given us a

  83. word, you've given us the word, you've given us.

  84. A library in the form of a book. Of many words that speak to us

  85. in every circumstance that we could ever experience in this

  86. life. And not only have you given us

  87. the word which says how to deal with it.

  88. But you've granted to us your very own Spirit as we hide

  89. ourselves in Christ. Jesus.

  90. We walk by the spirit of God and he illuminates, your word for us

  91. he gives us understanding where there is no understanding.

  92. He gives us peace where there looks like there should be no

  93. peace. He gives us hope where there's

  94. despair. He gives us joy in the midst of

  95. morning. It's inexplicable what you have

  96. done for us in the provision of your word.

  97. And then the project provision of your spirits, the death and

  98. resurrection of your son Jesus. Father, there is endless amounts

  99. of Glory Your Glory available to us.

  100. If only, we will seek your face. And so I praise you for the book

  101. of habakkuk in it, we learn how to seek your face in the middle

  102. of suffering and despair and disappointment and

  103. misunderstanding. We learned how to go to you.

  104. We learned how to come to you, how to recall who you are, and

  105. the work that you're doing. Father, would you teach us today

  106. as men? And women is boys and girls who

  107. are seeking your face? Teach us.

  108. Teach us just how the righteous live by faith.

  109. Teach us how to walk with, holy contentment. as we trust in the

  110. Providence of God, Heavenly Father, we adore you and we

  111. praise you for the Salvation. We've received in Jesus Christ.

  112. We ask these things in his name. Amen.

  113. Well previously on habakkuk. Habakkuk is a prophet to Judah.

  114. He's in the southern Kingdom of God's people, this happened

  115. after that. The Kingdom of Israel was split

  116. into two after David's, son Solomon, it was after his death

  117. but it was his great sins that led to the splitting of the

  118. Kingdom. And the people of Judah and the

  119. southern Kingdom, the people of Israel were in the Northern

  120. parts of this. The people of Judah, here are

  121. increasingly becoming more and more vile people of Israel were

  122. doing the very same things. Turning from the one true Living

  123. God, the one who had brought them out of the bondage of the

  124. Egyptians, the one who had delivered them time and time

  125. again, the one who had established his Covenant with

  126. them through their forefathers. They've turned on the one true

  127. Living God and they're turning to false gods, dead, Gods gods,

  128. made of wood and stone and precious metals gods, that don't

  129. breathe God's that don't speak. God's that don't save, they've

  130. turned to them. And the reason is because the

  131. persecution from these evil Nations, these Pagan Nations,

  132. the persecution is is heating up, its getting strong.

  133. And in their despair, in their persecution.

  134. They think to themselves, if we'll just turn, if we'll just

  135. adapt, if we'll just adopt more of this worldly influence.

  136. Well, we'll survive. We might not only survive.

  137. We might actually Prosper as they are seemingly prospering.

  138. They're trying to avoid the pressure of the Pagan Nations

  139. trying to avoid the persecution. Brothers and sisters turning

  140. away from God. Bowing down to false gods bowing

  141. down, though. Worldly Kings.

  142. Will never ever be enough to make persecution or tribulations

  143. pass over you? Amen.

  144. If you bow the knee to a false god, if you bow, the knee to

  145. worldly Powers who were standing and direct Rebellion to God.

  146. Right. You will not.

  147. You will not forego persecution. It's silly to think so, but you

  148. can understand how you might think in a moment of great heat.

  149. If I'll just do this, my family could be saved.

  150. But I mean, it was more vile than maybe, even what we're

  151. thinking of they were literally offering children as sacrifices

  152. to save their own skin. The truth is when you bow the

  153. need to false gods. You invite Now The Sovereign

  154. just righteous discipline of a holy God of a living God.

  155. So, I want you to remember that. Because when the mobs come after

  156. you for Faithfully standing on the truths found in God's, holy

  157. word, you'll need some fortitude about you.

  158. You'll need something to stand on, trust God.

  159. And this is what the back of learns.

  160. Trust the Lord, I back, it goes to God and he complains about

  161. the rise of the Chaldeans, or the Babylonians and the

  162. persecution is growing. And it's possible that that

  163. habakkuk had maybe a vision of what was coming.

  164. We don't know that for sure. but we do know that this moment, the

  165. Chaldeans didn't look like a massive threat, but it's just a

  166. few decades away that they were And he comes to God in the

  167. middle of this persecution as its kind of beginning to heat up

  168. and he says where are you God? Your holy people are suffering.

  169. Where are you? Do you not care for them?

  170. Do not care for your people. Do you not care that a more

  171. wicked people? The more wicked nation is

  172. persecuting your own people, which is the less Wicked nation

  173. of the to God. Where are you?

  174. It's really kind of an age-old question, right?

  175. Where is God when evil men Prevail?

  176. Where is God? When evil seems to take the day.

  177. When evil seems to get the W, where is God, when God's people

  178. are taking the L, right? Where is he?

  179. If God is good then why do why does evil go unpunished?

  180. Why does it go unhindered? And God responds to a backing.

  181. He says this, he says I'm doing a thing aback that you would not

  182. understand even if I told you I'm raising up the Chaldeans the

  183. Babylonians as judgment against my people.

  184. Wow, so this more wicked nation is now persecuting.

  185. This seemingly less Wicked nation and we have a kick thinks

  186. to himself that it's a less Wicked Nation.

  187. Because there still are there still is a faithful.

  188. Remnant of people who love the Lord who are devoted to God.

  189. But because judah's being persecuted and they live in

  190. Judah, they're experiencing the persecution.

  191. Does this sound familiar to any of us?

  192. It looks very similar to what we see brothers and sisters across

  193. the globe experiencing today. You need look no further than

  194. our northern border to see persecution against Christians

  195. churches. By a government.

  196. And I'll talk about Missouri about Canada.

  197. Think of Missouri. What's going on in Missouri.

  198. The person that you should in Canada is going wildly

  199. unreported. thank God for truckers because Canadian

  200. pastors, haven't done much, but a few have A few have praised

  201. God for them. So God responds to habakkuk and

  202. he says, I'm doing this thing that you won't understand.

  203. And I'm doing it as a judgment against my people, and the

  204. people of Judah thought, again, surely their safety and

  205. submitting ourselves to these evil Nations.

  206. If only we turn from our God and we bow to their gods, and we

  207. will be safe, will prosper in the land, just as they do.

  208. You can imagine this is what's going through their minds, is a

  209. more powerful, more. Wicked Nation comes on you, and

  210. you see the numbers Rising against you.

  211. And you think and if we just bend the knee on this one thing,

  212. by the way, this is happening in churches all across America.

  213. Bending the knee to the rise of false gender ideas, false,

  214. marriage ideas, false racial ideas.

  215. We can't bend the knee to society to the world.

  216. We must stand on the truth of God and stand boldly on the

  217. truths of God. People of Judah thought.

  218. Surely surely there's safety in this.

  219. I don't know if you guys ever saw the movie Kingdom of Heaven.

  220. Is it really kind of went unnoticed.

  221. It came out and I think in 2005 and it depicts the Christian

  222. Crusades of the 12th century. It's got Orlando Bloom in it,

  223. Liam Neeson's in it. That's about all I can remember.

  224. As far as characters, you might recognize But in the movie that

  225. Orlando Bloom plays this character named Bailey and he's

  226. a blacksmith from France and he, he finds himself in a position

  227. to lead the charge and defending the city of Jerusalem from the

  228. impending. Attack of the Muslims.

  229. That attack was going to be led by a Muslim Sultan name

  230. salahuddin. The movie kind of flew under the

  231. radar, but it's got some really epic moments in.

  232. It's really incredible quotes, and if you haven't seen it, I

  233. encourage you to watch it parents.

  234. You may watch it first before you let the kids see it, but

  235. Moments before the final battle though.

  236. Bail-ins. He's rallying the troops.

  237. He's inside the walls and he's making preparations.

  238. He's getting them. Ready for what's coming?

  239. Which is likely death. and there's this priest who's been

  240. with them kind of the whole time and he's he's just the most

  241. sissified priest there that there could have been, right?

  242. Just no backbone, no willingness to stand for truth.

  243. And this priest is looking at what's going on and he sees that

  244. deaths coming and he tells bailing he's bailing trying to

  245. Rally everyone together. The precious begins to holler

  246. out convert to Islam Today and beg God's forgiveness tomorrow.

  247. Convert to Islam Today. Beg God's forgiveness tomorrow.

  248. I suspect that it's possible the people of Judah maybe felt that

  249. I think people think that today if I'll Just Surrender some

  250. things now I can I can ask forgiveness later.

  251. Yeah. Well you might do that, you

  252. know, we're thinking kind of in global political type things

  253. were thinking in spiritual attacks and that sort of idea.

  254. But just think about your own life and The Temptations you

  255. face each day and Tatian to get angry temptation to to look upon

  256. someone lustfully the temptation to say things, you ought not say

  257. the temptation to gossip, that them take whatever whatever your

  258. temptation is. Like you know you know what your

  259. struggle is. You're aware of it.

  260. And it's so easy to think because we're grace-filled

  261. people. We're men and women who have

  262. been saved by the grace of God. It's so easy to think in those

  263. moments. Well, You know, his Mercy is

  264. more, his grace is more if I just bend the knee.

  265. Now to this Then I'll experience Grace later, my forgive and

  266. Amaya, pleading for forgiveness. I'm not saying that God won't

  267. show you Grace when you repent, but that's not the definition of

  268. repentance repentance. Is to turn away from that.

  269. Evil thing to turn to the Lord. And so, anyway, this priest says

  270. convert to Islam Today and big God's forgiveness for tomorrow.

  271. Balian looks at him and he says you have taught me a lot about

  272. religion, your eminence. He's taught me a lot about

  273. religion. When converts or die becomes the

  274. options available faithful Christians.

  275. Must respond the way Paul responded in Philippians chapter

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  276. 1 to live as Christ, but to die is gain.

  277. Amen. But Judah largely wasn't doing

  278. that. And so in God's grace, and God's

  279. mercy, he says I'm going to discipline my people.

  280. Now the the discipline of God is an exercise of Grace.

  281. Now, the in the same way that a child doesn't understand the

  282. grace of a parent and discipline in the moment, because spankings

  283. hurt right there, okay, to still talk about spankings today.

  284. I do, I'm not sure. Okay, I'm safe and Safe Company.

  285. It's like beatings spankings way, God intended.

  286. But it's hard in a moment to understand Grace.

  287. So a parent must go through Great Lengths to explain on the

  288. front end and on the back end, I'm not talking about the back

  289. end. I'm about the end of that

  290. moment. That this is an act of Grace

  291. from God, for you. That Daddy stands in the place

  292. of the one who is supposed to discipline you commanded by God

  293. to do so so that you become a child, who loves the Lord.

  294. And your sin, your discipline in this moment, reveals your need

  295. for a savior not just discipline it reveals a deeper need.

  296. You have a need for a savior. So there's a lot of great things

  297. that happen in discipline when it's done in a Godly Manner.

  298. And this is what God is doing, is exercising, discipline in a

  299. Godly manner, I'm going to step in and discipline my people for

  300. their evil but their sinfulness Bacchic still doesn't like it

  301. isn't like God's first response to his first complain and so he

  302. goes to God again. He says, wait a minute how how

  303. could you use a more wicked people to punish a less Wicked

  304. people now explained over the last two weeks?

  305. I don't think bacchic was sinning and going to God with

  306. these questions. He's recalling the Covenant name

  307. of the Lord. He's declaring you God or my

  308. Lord. And and he's remembering who God

  309. is and because he knows whose God is he struggling to?

  310. What's going on? This is not sinful to do this.

  311. It's sinful to turn from the Lord.

  312. It's sinful to do what these people in Judah were doing.

  313. It's not sinful to ask God questions and to wait on

  314. responses to trust him in the silence, which is what a

  315. backache does at the end of a second question.

  316. See since I will go to my watch post and I will wait on you.

  317. Wait. And so back at wants to know how

  318. can you use a more wicked people to punish a less Wicked people?

  319. How can you look idly at evil? God, this is not your character

  320. Shirley And again, God responds by saying I'm using them for my

  321. good purposes. However, their day of judgement

  322. is coming, evil will not Prosper forever.

  323. God says, but the righteous shall live by his faith.

  324. If he's an okay guy back to for there.

  325. What God gets out his at my Justice will reign.

  326. He says my glory will cover the Earth as the water covers.

  327. The sea my glory. Will cover the Earth as the

  328. water covers the sea. We establish last week but

  329. that's That's all the see his water right?

  330. I sit enthroned in the heavens. God says R.

  331. I am enthroned in the heavens. She got is what he's saying.

  332. Is that in my Providence? I'm ordering these things

  333. according to my good purposes but I have not forgotten.

  334. Evil evil will received just punishment and he calls out

  335. these men and names their sins for them with five woes there in

  336. chapter two. When the Lord said those three

  337. things they're in habakkuk Chapter 2 where he says, the

    Habakkuk 2 chapter mention

  338. righteous shall live by his faith in verse for my glory will

  339. cover the Earth and verse 14, and I'm in throne, in the

  340. heavens there. In verse 20 of chapter 2,

  341. something clicked in habakkuk mind, something, clicked deeper

  342. than his mind, that was in his soul habakkuk felt these words.

  343. He knew these words, he understood these truths, Might

  344. say illumination happens. Habakkuk responds.

  345. Then in prayer Expresses in this prayer that we're about to read

  346. a deep dependence on God, and and he displays for us.

  347. What? Holy contentment looks like.

  348. The last chapter reveals the transformation that has occurred

  349. in the depths of habakkuk Soul habakkuk, sprayer is filled with

  350. praise. It's filled with petitions.

  351. It's filled with remembrances of God's past works.

  352. And as we look at the prayer, it teaches us, It instructs us.

  353. How to pray? What our prayers should look

  354. like as men and women, who love the Lord, and who are going

  355. through, really difficult moments that we often don't

  356. fully understand. So let's let's look at this

  357. prayer. A brief word about this.

  358. And what I kind of want us to see is that a backpack sprayer

  359. is a wonderful display faith that leads to this holy

  360. contentment. And so my big idea for you today

  361. or my thing. I want you to kind of write down

  362. as a summation of what we're looking at.

  363. Is this the righteous live by faith Displaying holy

  364. contentment in God's Providence, the righteous lived by faith

  365. displaying contentment in God's Providence.

  366. So, let's look at first one. A prayer of habakkuk the

  367. prophets. According to she guy owned by

  368. says she guy own? Is that how you would have

  369. pronounced? That really shit?

  370. Okay, it's like, man, that's amazing, Dad.

  371. Good job. yeah, I mean I went to Blue Letter Bible.com for the

  372. pronunciation of that. She, I own But notice, I mean,

  373. in verse 1, we're already getting so much information

  374. about this. The first the word she got on a

  375. only twice. I forgot to write down the other

  376. reference in Psalms but it appears in Psalms maybe 18, I

  377. could be way off on that. But it's only twice its here in

  378. habakkuk. And then once in Psalms And so

  379. because we see it in Psalms because we see it here tied to

  380. something, that is musical is verse 19 says, so to the

  381. choirmaster with stringed instruments, we know that what

  382. is happening, here is a song. Habakkuk is written something.

  383. Now, remember, he goes on behalf of the people of Judah, right?

  384. I mean, he goes on his own because he's questioning things,

  385. but he understands that there are people here in Judah who

  386. love the Lord and are questioning things.

  387. And what's the best thing you can do for people who are

  388. questioning things about God, About world events about things

  389. going on their loss. It's to give them God's words to

  390. put God's word on their lips to put it in their hearts.

  391. Amen. Now, you and I we benefit from

  392. having the written word collected for us.

  393. But in habakkuk today, that would have had the Torah.

  394. It's the first five books of the Old Testament.

  395. They would've been able to read about the past works of God,

  396. which is why habakkuk in this prayer is going to recall the

  397. past works of God. You see bacchic writes this down

  398. in the form of a song so that the congregation can sing it

  399. together. So, the congregation can

  400. rehearse in songs, the truths of God.

  401. Singing is deeply spiritual? But there's a reason music of

  402. all kinds can make you feel certain ways.

  403. It's deeply spiritual. Even unchristian, music is

  404. deeply. Spiritual can be a spiritual

  405. experience, all right, that's why it matters the songs.

  406. We say, that's why we go to Great Lengths, to make sure the

  407. songs were seeing are rehearsing the truths of God's word.

  408. We want you to know the truth of God's word.

  409. In song, we also want you to hear it preach.

  410. But once, you know, it in song, so that as a congregation, we're

  411. rehearsing God's truths together. so that when stuff

  412. hits the fan, You and I can recall the truths of God

  413. together. You and your home can say I need

  414. to turn on, only a holy God, and listen to that.

  415. The sing along with it, I need to sing.

  416. Is he worthy with my family tonight because goodness were

  417. struggling. Right.

  418. This is what songs are for. There is spiritual warfare.

  419. It's Warfare. And this is what habakkuk is

  420. doing the Congress. I said, way more about that than

  421. I meant to, but this word is depicting.

  422. It's largely believed to depict a highly passionate or emotional

  423. poetic form like a song. And clearly, because he says to

  424. the choirmaster with stringed instruments, it's a salt.

  425. It's meant to be sung. I will not sing it for you

  426. today. I will only read it.

  427. Allen busted me out. Last week, I'm not a singer.

  428. All right? It's a prayer meant to be used

  429. and the worship of God. Verse 20, Lord, I have heard the

  430. report of view. I'm just going to read through

  431. 16. So we kind of get the idea of

  432. what's going on here. Oh, Lord, I've heard the report

  433. of you and your work. Oh, Lord.

  434. Do I fear in the midst of the years?

  435. Revive it. In the midst of the years, make

  436. it known in Wrath. Remember mercy?

  437. God came from tomorrow on and the Holy One from Mount Paran

  438. C'est. Le The word Sailors just used

  439. oftentimes for the musical break a pausa, could be a moment of

  440. silence, a moment of reflection could be a, you know, a guitar

  441. solo, it could be. But but but the idea here is

  442. that you're reflecting on the works of God.

  443. You're pausing his Splendor covered the heavens and the

  444. Earth was full of his praise. His brightness was like the

  445. light rays flashed from his hand and there he failed his power

  446. before him went pestilence which is like a like a disease or a

  447. plague. He mentions plagued their necks

  448. and plague followed at his heels.

  449. He stood and measured the Earth he looked and shook the nation's

  450. then the Eternal mountains were Battered, the Everlasting heels

  451. sink low, his were the Everlasting ways.

  452. I saw the tents of cushion and affliction.

  453. The curtains of the land of Midian did Trimble.

  454. Was your wrath against the rivers.

  455. Oh Lord, was your anger against the rivers or your indignation

  456. against the see. When you rode on your horses, on

  457. your chariot of Salvation, you strip the sheath from your bow

  458. calling for many arrows. C'est Le You split the Earth

  459. with rivers, the mountains saw you and rised, the Raging Waters

  460. swept on the Deep gave forth its voice.

  461. It lifted, its hands on high, the Sun and Moon Stood Still in

  462. their place at the light of your arrows, as they sped at the

  463. flash of your glittering spear. There is recalling the Battle of

  464. Joshua when the sun literally Stood Still.

  465. You March through the Earth and fury, you thresh the nation's

  466. and anger. You went out for the Salvation

  467. of your people for the Salvation of your anointed.

  468. You crush the head of the House of the wicked laying him bear

  469. from thigh to neck C'est Le You pierced with his own arrows.

  470. The heads of his Warriors who came like a whirlwind to scatter

  471. me rejoicing as if to Devour the poor in secrets, you trampled

  472. the sea with your horses, the surging of Mighty Waters.

  473. I hear and my body trembles my lips quiver at the sound

  474. rottenness enters into my bones. My legs tremble beneath me yet I

  475. will quietly wait for the day of trouble.

  476. To come upon people who invade us.

  477. Wow. Wow.

  478. You can see that the way that he goes to God, right?

  479. I mean your work O Lord, do I fear?

  480. He he starts with just again every time he comes before the

  481. Lord, it's it's recalling. The Covenant name of God.

  482. But in this specific moment, he recalls the specific actions of

  483. God and establishing that Covenant He recalls the battles,

  484. he recalls the deliverances the mighty deliverances, The Parting

  485. of the Red Sea, as the Egyptians are coming to destroy the

  486. Israelites. Did you Rage Against The Waters?

  487. Lord? No.

  488. Was God, raging against the Red Sea and that moment not at all.

  489. The Red Sea was used in as an instrument of his Rage Against

  490. the Pagan Egyptians, right? It was used as an instrument of

  491. his Deliverance. For his people, the Israelites.

  492. And so he recalls all these things and he's like I hear them

  493. and my body trembles Recalling, how great you are in my body.

  494. Trembles my lips. Quiver at the sound.

  495. Now, remember, habakkuk doesn't get here in a moment.

  496. We don't know how long these prayers these interactions were.

  497. We don't have any of that for us.

  498. But what we know is that habakkuk was in a struggle in

  499. chapter one that he is now in chapter 3 resolving to exercise.

  500. Holy contentment, because of the god, he has encountered.

  501. You see that? You're not promised.

  502. You're not promised? No hardship.

  503. You're not promising those struggles, but you promised

  504. peace in the middle of struggles.

  505. Your promised hope in the midst of despair.

  506. Because God is with you, even in discipline, he's with you.

  507. And no you see, contentment is. As I said in the beginning, it's

  508. a hard thing to learn It's not enjoyable at all.

  509. There's so much pain to this but when you come out on the other

  510. side, Having learned contentment.

  511. Whew, that is a breath of fresh air.

  512. My friends. it's a feeling of Peace as we can, we can rightly

  513. say, holy spirit's amazing, it's not in my notes, not not

  514. something I've thought of before, but here it is, we can

  515. rightly say. So I'm saying that because this

  516. is, this is the Lord, not Kyle, but in Philippians 4:6, you're

    Philippians 4:6

  517. encouraged to be to not worry about anything to be prayerful

  518. and everything. Amen, to make your petitions to

  519. the Lord with Thanksgiving. And it says, in the God of

  520. Peace, will rule your hearts and Minds.

  521. Or a peace that surpasses understanding will rule your

  522. hearts and Minds. Do you know that in Philippians

    Philippians 4:11–13

  523. 4:11 through 13? I was actually going to read it

  524. later in the sermon, but Philippians 4:11, 313.

    Philippians 4:11

  525. Paul is saying they're all of, you know, Philippians 4:13,

    Philippians 4:13

  526. right? I can do all things through

  527. Christ, who does what strengthens me.

  528. That comes after 4 6 and 7 and 48 which tells you what to think

  529. about and then in for 11 and 13. Paul says, I've been high.

  530. I've been low. A lot.

  531. I've had nothing but I have learned that I can do all things

  532. through Christ, who strengthens me?

  533. He says, I've learned contentment.

  534. Consent. Not noticed that before in

  535. Thompson here, preaching for six seven and eight directly tied to

  536. for 11 through 13. There's no doubt in my mind the

  537. peace that surpasses all understanding is wholly

  538. contentment and God. Holy contentment in his

  539. Providence that he brings me high he brings me low I can do

  540. all things through Christ who strengthens me.

  541. Amen. So back to verse 2, he begins by

  542. recognizing the holy and righteous purposes of God and he

  543. does. So with reverence for God with

  544. It's not only a reverence for God, it's a reverence for God's

  545. Providence. He he says your work O Lord.

  546. Do I fear your work O Lord. Do I fear?

  547. It's a reverence for God but it's a reverence for a reverence

  548. for his providential work that your hands are doing things.

  549. I don't comprehend And I fear you have a fear here is reverent

  550. fear. Let me explain to you what fear

  551. is and especially in the Old Testament in Proverbs 9, and 10.

  552. We read this, that the fear of the Lord, is the beginning of

  553. wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is inside the fear of

  554. the Lord, is the beginning of wisdom.

  555. And so, what we're understanding is that the pathway by which we

  556. get to Holy contentment where we can endure all things the

  557. pathway to get there is in It is in a reverence a humble.

  558. Let me add humble to this humble reverence before the Lord.

  559. Now, how do you achieve humble reverence if you're not also

  560. going through suffering? If you're always Mighty, if

  561. everything is always working out for you, if you're always good.

  562. How do you achieve a humble reverence?

  563. You can't at least the likelihood is so much more slim.

  564. Because his chest, are you going to beat your own whose muscles?

  565. Are you going to flex your own right by my great hands?

  566. The people of God were warned and Deuteronomy chapter 8, not

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  567. to say by the might of by the strength of my own hands.

  568. I've gotten this wealth but it is God who has given me the

  569. ability to make wealth is God who has given me the ability to

  570. land to dwell in the land that I did not own.

  571. That did not make the live in houses.

  572. I did not create right. Was their entering the promised

  573. land? He incurs him do not ever say by

  574. the might of my own hands. I have done this.

  575. And so humble reverence leads to Growing wisdom.

  576. You approach the Lord humbling irreverent before him, you

  577. understand that he alone? Jesus says in Matthew chapter

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  578. 10, not to fear as he sending the disciples, and he says, do

  579. not fear the ones who can kill body only, but fear of the one

  580. who can destroy Body and Soul The courage in your room or fear

  581. before the Lord, remain humble before the Lord.

  582. Humble, reverence leads to Growing wisdom as faithful men

  583. or women continually put the Lord and his truth above his

  584. self or herself. And doing that more and more

  585. over time. What happens is you grow in the

  586. knowledge of God Almighty? You do not grow in your own

  587. understanding of who you are. You grow in your understanding

  588. of who he is. But you also grow in your

  589. understanding of what he is like his character.

  590. His promises his past work, his future plans and that

  591. simultaneously produces this thing in you that is comforting

  592. it promotes peace. Contentment that the world can

  593. understand and yet it is terrifying.

  594. Because you see, before you a holy God, you think what how can

  595. you be at both? How can you have both peace and

  596. be terrified simultaneously? It's a good question.

  597. Good question, I will ridicule the question.

  598. I think it's a good question. Yeah, any of you recall, the

  599. story of Jesus and his disciples again in Matthew this time in

  600. chapter 8 where the disciples are in the boat with Christ,

  601. there's a storm raging around them.

  602. The disciples are in a lot of fear, guess we're sleeping

  603. Jesus. And those disciples are sitting

  604. there and they're thinking to themselves.

  605. We've seen this man. Heal people, we've seen him

  606. feed, people wishing him do all raised people from the dead.

  607. We have seen this man do all kinds of things.

  608. All kinds of things and they are terrified and they go and they

  609. wake the Lord get off. What is going on out here?

  610. You we need your help. Do you remember what the Lord

  611. says to them? He says why are you afraid?

  612. Oh you of little faith. Why are you afraid of you of

  613. little faith? and then he rises and he speaks

  614. to the storm which is immediately calmed, peace be

  615. still and it's still The Cycles are standing there and this is

  616. this is why I say you can have both peace and be terrified.

  617. The disciples were standing there there, Marvel at him.

  618. The scripture says in Matthew chapter 8 and they say this what

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  619. sort of man is this that even the wind and the waves of the

  620. wind and the Sea obey, his voice?

  621. What sort of man is this some translations?

  622. Say what manner of man is this? It's the same thing that

  623. happened to Isaiah in Isaiah chapter 6, as he gets his vision

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  624. into the heavenlies and he sees the Lord there.

  625. And he says, Behold, I am a man of unclean lips.

  626. We read there that he was undone.

  627. He was terrified before the Lord because he recognized, I'm not

  628. fit, I'm not wholly. He is altogether.

  629. Holy which means he's altogether different and I don't belong in

  630. his presence. And disciples have the same

  631. recognition Abacus going through the same thing here.

  632. Where I'm at, peace But I'm but I recognize that you can do

  633. whatever you wish. Amen.

  634. And I'm not going to question you anymore.

  635. I'm going to trust you going to trust you.

  636. Habakkuk also, begs for Mercy, he recognizes In This Moment.

  637. The grace of God, he says in your wrath, remember Mercy?

  638. Habakkuk saying please, I know that we deserve the Wrath, I

  639. know that we deserve the discipline but please remember

  640. Mercy, Lord. In the midst of your judgments

  641. on your people, remember Mercy. He goes on to say despite

  642. everything going on around him, he goes on to, he's able to then

  643. say or ask really that God's will be done.

  644. That his perfect will be done. He says this he says in the

  645. midst of the years, revive it in the midst of the years, make it

  646. known. So in the middle of all of these

  647. things, Do your will. In the midst of these painful

  648. years, whatever they may look like do your will make it known.

  649. The prophet was faced with God's unsearchable, wisdom and in

  650. response. He says he humbles himself and

  651. he says you do your thing God. I understand.

  652. It's best. I can understand, I understand.

  653. And so no one can bring a charge against God.

  654. No one could put God in his debt and habakkuk the prophet.

  655. He knows this, and what he understands that God is building

  656. or establishing his kingdom, even if he doesn't understand

  657. the route that God's taking to get there, Right.

  658. So, we offers a prayer to God that expresses his trust and

  659. offers a prayer to God that expresses confidence and has

  660. reverence to it. He's in all of God, he's undone

  661. in the, in the midst of this interaction.

  662. He's had with the Lord. And he knows that God executes

  663. his righteous judgment. He knows that God will do what

  664. he says, according to his own wisdom, according to his own

  665. will, and so habakkuk displays a holy contentment in the

  666. Providence of God by expressing trust.

  667. He does so by recalling God's faithfulness in the past.

  668. He recalls future promises. I told you guys last week in

  669. Chapter 2 When God says that, my glory will fill the Earth and I

  670. sit in throne in the heavens, he is giving Isaiah to things that

  671. he can. Hold on to the righteous shall

  672. live by his faith. Here's two things that you

  673. should show. Deep faith in my glory will fill

  674. the Earth. And I sit enthroned in the

  675. heavens. I've not been thwarted.

  676. My plans. Haven't been stopped.

  677. I've not forgotten you. You can trust me.

  678. Amen. And so he recalls these things,

  679. and all of these things is recalling them in the middle of

  680. this current trials, in the middle of the tribulation, in

  681. the middle of not here, he doesn't hear anything about when

  682. this will end. And it goes on for decades.

  683. He doesn't hear anything about when the Babylonians will

  684. finally get theirs. Right?

  685. Didn't hear anything about that? We trust God and that trust it

  686. creates this holy contentment. And when you have wholly,

  687. consent moments in the Lord and the middle of great problems,

  688. you will not lose heart. In the midst of your troubling

  689. days, in the midst of your difficulties, he recalls,

  690. Israel's deliverance from Egyptian bondage, he recalls

  691. their safe Passage through the Red Sea.

  692. He recalls their defeat of the Canaanite enemies, the

  693. establishment of the promised land, I mean he goes through it,

  694. recalling the actions. The god of the Covenants.

  695. In verse 13. He mentioned something that's

  696. really amazing. He mentions the words.

  697. You're annoying. It Says, you went out for the

  698. Salvation of your people for the Salvation of your anointed.

  699. This word, this reference is a reference to the davidic king.

  700. Your anointed is a reference to the davidic kingdom, to the

  701. people that he represents. Which recalls God's covenant

  702. that he made to David and second Samuel seven.

  703. So again, we're just recalling. The Covenant works of God here.

  704. What's really amazing about this?

  705. Is this word that's used here is the Hebrew word from which we

  706. get Messiah. So Hebrew word, from which we

  707. get Messiah. How many of the Messiah is the

  708. final davidic are the Messiah, is the one who's going to

  709. represent God's people, but that Messiah had not yet come in

  710. habakkuk today. And this is why.

  711. When Matthew and Matthew chapter 1, he's writing to the Jews

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  712. largely. This is why he introduces

  713. Christ. As the son of Abraham, the son

  714. of David, Because he's recalling the covenants.

  715. We went over this as we talked about it but there are big

  716. picture series but he's recalling the Covenant that God

  717. made with Abraham that he re-establishes with David.

  718. That there will be one born one who rules.

  719. There will be no end to his Reign and hearing habakkuk.

  720. You have a reference to the anointed one.

  721. And renewing God's faithfulness in Israel's history, habakkuk

  722. can face his fears with faith. You can face his fears with

  723. trust in the God of all history. What the?

  724. At the high point in human history, the most amazing point,

  725. the most amazing thing that's ever taken place on Earth.

  726. The Messiah did come God. The son became man.

  727. Dwelled among them. He lived among them.

  728. He died for them. For all who would call on his

  729. name. He died for them.

  730. And on that cross on that cross God in his wrath remembers

  731. Mercy. I'm not saying he saved his son.

  732. He saved his people through his son.

  733. At the Cross of Christ, God's Wrath is poured out on Christ.

  734. Isaiah 53. We read that it was the will of

  735. the Lord to crush him. And so his wrath.

  736. God's Wrath God, the Father pours out his wrath on his own

  737. son so that we who trust in Christ might be washed clean.

  738. In an astounding Act of Mercy. Grace.

  739. Undeserved on ironed. So you and I are the

  740. beneficiaries of a stronger Revelation than what habakkuk

  741. had So often we think, man, if the Lord would just show up and

  742. talk to me the way he talks to habakkuk.

  743. Wow. Of course I'd have holy

  744. consents. Brothers and sisters, the Lord

  745. shows up in your home. Every time you open this.

  746. He shows up in your life every time you open his word and you

  747. read it and choose to believe it, the Lord turns Hearts

  748. through his word. The same way, he was turning

  749. Hearts through his word here in habakkuk.

  750. His word is our greatest hope and so we live in an age of

  751. stronger, Revelation, what I mean by stronger is this more

  752. revealed? We don't even have to wonder who

  753. the anointed one is. It's being prayed for here.

  754. We know it's Christ. Jesus.

  755. Is that we place our hope in him?

  756. And in his resurrection, he gives us.

  757. The ability to come boldly to the throne of grace, Hebrew

  758. says, and in that moment, as you come boldly to the throne of

  759. grace, you go boldly to the Lord.

  760. You know, that you have a savior, you have high priest who

  761. sympathizes with you in your weakness.

  762. He was tempted in all the ways you are yet without sin.

  763. And so the argument goes, well, he was tempted in all the ways.

  764. I am yet without sin. How can he sympathize with me?

  765. It's a good question. But here's the answer.

  766. God, the son, Jesus Christ. Went all the way to the end of

  767. Temptation and did not sin. And you might make it five

  768. minutes before you give him 10 minutes before you give in.

  769. God, son, drinking fool. And so he sympathizes with you

  770. and all of your weaknesses and he bids, you come to the throne

  771. of grace and find Mercy and Grace in your time of need calm.

  772. Come the writer of Hebrews tells us in Hebrews 7:25 that Jesus

    Hebrews 7:25

  773. Christ is able to save to the uttermost as finally forever.

  774. That's with out, doubt, he's saved to the uttermost, all who

  775. call upon his name, or all who go before him come to him.

  776. Amen, he saves to the uttermost. Everyone comes to God through

  777. Jesus Christ. I'm see God through Jesus Christ

  778. and so we have a hope in Christ that is undefiled It's not

  779. defiled. Your circumstances, getting a

  780. filing your doubts. Can't the file that your fear

  781. cannot defile. It, you have a hope that is

  782. sure, quote Hebrews again, Hebrews 6 he says that this hope

  783. is a sure and steady anchor for your soul.

  784. Praise God. It's kept in heaven for you.

  785. The enemies of God or not infiltrating heaven to take away

  786. the hope that God has for you. The enemies of God are not

  787. prying back, the hand of God as he holds you according to John

    John 10 chapter mention

  788. chapter 10. When he holds you, no one can

  789. snatch you away from him. All of this leads habakkuk into

  790. a new verse to his Prayer song. Maybe this, these verses are the

  791. only part that's a song again, we're not really sure, but

  792. because it starts with that odd word that begins with an S

  793. there. In verse 1, we can rightly

  794. deduce that this is probably all This is probably all song.

  795. This is what he says. He says though the Fig Tree

  796. should not blossom. More fruit be on the vines, the

  797. produce of the olive fail and the fields, yield no food.

  798. The flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the

  799. Stalls means there's nothing right.

  800. There's no food. There's no survival.

  801. There's nothing but death. He says yet, I will rejoice in

  802. the Lord. I will take joy in the god of my

  803. salvation. God, the Lord is my strength.

  804. He makes my feet. Like the deers he makes me tread

  805. on my high places. To the choirmaster, the string

  806. instruments. But I did that, he makes my

  807. feet. Like the deers you makes me

  808. tread on high places. What did habakkuk look like in

  809. verse 16. He says there in 16, he says, I

  810. hear in my body, trembles my lips.

  811. Quiver at the sound. Rottenness entered into my

  812. bones. My legs trembled beneath me.

  813. You've ever surveyed deer on landscape of any, any kind of

  814. terrain? It's amazing.

  815. It sure it's steady. And this is what he's saying.

  816. The Lord makes me sure. He makes me Steady In the middle

  817. of difficult Rocky terrain, he makes me tread on high places

  818. even though I feel very low. Back at now understands that,

  819. even if all food is removed, even if death is at my front

  820. door yet, I will rejoice in the Lord.

  821. I will take my joy. I will take joy in the god of my

  822. salvation. God, the Lord is my strength.

  823. One commentator kind of sums up these things.

  824. He says this is a bit lengthy so I'll just recite it like it's a

  825. I'll read it to you like I'm preaching it still the

  826. recounting of God's faithfulness and Israel's past which is what

  827. we see in verses 1 through 15. Draws our minds to the Great and

  828. Mighty Deeds of the Lord on behalf of his people down

  829. through history. All right?

  830. So it's just what we've been saying.

  831. We re Calling All The Works of God here and he seemed down

  832. through history that God has been faithful.

  833. He goes on to say in all these deliverances these Provisions,

  834. they foreshadow the ultimate Mighty deed of History, which is

  835. the coming of Christ, when the fullness of time had come, which

  836. is how Paul describes in Galatians. 4:4 when the fullness

    Galatians 4:4

  837. of time had come Christ came, the ultimate fulfillment of

  838. God's. Covenant promises to his people

  839. is found in Jesus through his life, his death, his

  840. resurrection. He delivers us from sins

  841. bondage. He brings us safely through

  842. death to life and thus, he Feet are greatest enemies which are

  843. Satan sin and death. And at the end of History

  844. Christ, will establish Us in the Eternal Promise Land Of Heaven.

  845. He goes on to write. This is why even amid many

  846. difficulties and uncertainties, we can continue to quietly wait

  847. as a bacchic says in verse 16 and rejoice in the Lord.

  848. And prayer looking to him as the god of my salvation.

  849. When life, crumbles all around us, we need not despair.

  850. God has not abandoned his purposes.

  851. He remains with us even in the trials and struggles.

  852. Jesus Christ, has brought us to himself, we are restored to God.

  853. He'll cannot touch us for we say.

  854. God, the Lord is my strength and we will rejoice in God.

  855. And Romans chapter 8, Paul's recalling just the grace, the

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  856. massive amount of Grace. It has been displayed in Christ

  857. Jesus. And he says this, he says, what,

  858. What then shall we say to these things?

  859. It's amazing salvation. We have if God is for us, who

  860. can be against us, He who did not spare his own son, but gave

  861. him up for us all. How will he not also with him?

  862. Graciously, give us all things who shall bring any charge

  863. against God's elect. It is God, who justifies who is

  864. to condemn Christ? Jesus is the one who died, more

  865. than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God who

  866. indeed his inner seating for us brothers and sisters.

  867. The very Son of God is now interceding for you.

  868. This is why he's able to save to the uttermost all who draw near

  869. to God through him. Who shall separate us.

  870. Paul goes on to writing chapter 8 of Romans who shall separate

  871. us from the love of Christ, shall tribulation, or distress

  872. or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword.

  873. As it is written for your sake, we were being killed all the day

  874. long. We are regarded as sheep to be

  875. slaughtered. No, he says, in verse 37, and

  876. all these things we are more than conquerors through him, who

  877. loved us for. I'm sure that neither death nor

  878. life nor angels, nor rulers nor things present, nor things to

  879. come nor powers nor height nor depth nor anything else in all

  880. creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God

  881. in Christ Jesus. Our lord.

  882. There's nothing. That should fortify your faith

  883. like the words there. At the end of Romans 8.

  884. I mentioned Philippians 4 earlier, this is what Paul

  885. writes of 11 through 13. He says where I've learned in

  886. whatever situation I am to be content.

  887. Whatever situation I am to be content but God I don't like it

  888. be content. But you don't understand this

  889. really horrible thing. That someone's done, be content.

  890. Be content. but call you really don't get it like contentment.

  891. And simply but I've got these bills that are due contentment.

  892. I've got these desires that are going unfulfilled.

  893. Contentment. Be content.

  894. I know how to be brought low. Paul says and I know how to

  895. abound in any and every circumstance, somebody say any

  896. and every circumstance, I've learned the secret of facing

  897. plenty and hunger, abundance and need who.

  898. I mean he just keeps piling it on here like nobody can look at

  899. this and say, well Paul, you really don't get my situation.

  900. It's kind of hard to say to somebody who was Shipwrecked

  901. multiple times bitten by a Viper.

  902. Eventually but headed stoned multiple times.

  903. Persecuted often, right? It's hard to look at that guy

  904. and say, but you don't get it. In verse 13, he says I can do

  905. all things through him. Who strengthens me, praise God.

  906. The book of habakkuk ends with a prayer, that's a song.

  907. The bacchic started with worry, he started with fear, he started

  908. with doubt, he had lots of questions as he was looking at

  909. everything happening around him. and then as he takes those

  910. questions to the Lord, he changes his viewpoints was no

  911. more of this. God, this is happening over here

  912. and golly. These people over here acting

  913. like fools, they're sacrificing kids to Molech that the

  914. Babylonians are encroaching on this end.

  915. Another Idol. Really guys, Looking at

  916. everything around him. And then in his These acts of

  917. doubt and fear and all those things he does.

  918. What every faithful man or woman boy, or girl of God, should he

  919. goes in prayer to the Lord? And he says, God, I don't

  920. understand. I don't know where you are.

  921. Once God tells him, I'm here. In fact, this is from my hand

  922. and it's for your good he's like how can this be for my good?

  923. God says, the righteous shall live by faith.

  924. Not forgotten. My people have not forgotten

  925. Justice. My glory will fill the earth.

  926. I sit enthroned in the heavens. He started by looking all around

  927. him, but he ends in worship. Jensen worship because he looked

  928. to God and he looked at God's wisdom.

  929. Look to God and he looked at God's wisdom.

  930. This last chapter displays holy contentment.

  931. It's the same thing you see. In job is something we threw out

  932. the Psalms. This is the same thing.

  933. You saying, Paul for from Paul, in chapter 4, you see it

  934. throughout scripture, it's no different.

  935. The message is the same trust the Lord, in all circumstances.

  936. And you will experience, holy consent.

  937. Holy contentment is a huge sign of Christian maturity.

  938. I won't say it's the peak. That's probably a bit too

  939. strong. I don't know that we ever

  940. arrived at like this peak of Christian maturity but holy

  941. contentment is a huge development in Christian

  942. maturity. When you start to trust the

  943. providential plan of God so much so that you can walk and

  944. contentment. Now, you're doing something that

  945. the world will look at centers, will look at it and they'll say

  946. what in the world is wrong with you.

  947. I want some of what you're having, all right?

  948. Basically, what habakkuk says is, though, today is awful and

  949. tomorrow is only going to get worse.

  950. I will rejoice in the god of my salvation.

  951. This is what Paul is saying in Romans 8 and Philippians 4.

  952. Our faith is not concerned about the what ifs of Life are because

  953. our faith teaches us that. Even if the worst happens, our

  954. God still Reigns. My God, still Ryan's.

  955. The righteous live by faith. Displaying a holy can sentiments

  956. in God's Providence me pray for you.

  957. Heavenly Father we love you. We thank you Lord for your

  958. kindness toward us. Thank you for your word.

  959. God, I pray that you would use your word now, to illuminate,

  960. the hearts and the minds Souls of those who were here today,

  961. But help them to see your face more.

  962. Clearly helped them to trust you more fully.

  963. Help the Lord to find contentment and their

  964. circumstance and maybe contentment is letting go of

  965. something. Maybe it's repentance.

  966. Maybe it's forgiveness, maybe it's trust.

  967. Father, we know that it is tied to seeking your face.

  968. Seeking your wisdom. Seeking your word and to trust

  969. that you help us Lord to do that.

  970. Help us to do that. Father, if there is anyone in

  971. here who is an unbeliever, I pray that you would help them.

  972. Through this word that's in heard today to help them.

  973. See. Jesus Christ is the only way to

  974. Salvation. The only way, we are guaranteed

  975. salvation, to the uttermost is to come to you, father, through

  976. your son. What would you draw them to you,

  977. by your spirits, grant them salvation and faith?

  978. Help them to know you today. And my father we love you as we

  979. declare the in song these words and only a holy God Lord, help

  980. us to sing it with conviction today.

  981. Of us to trust you help us to be encouraged As we sing together

  982. in Christ's name, I pray. Amen.
