  1. Well, good morning. It's good to see you guys.

  2. We'll welcome you today. You have your Bible.

  3. You can open the 1st Corinthians 14, First Corinthians 14 for the

  4. last time. All right, we're going to finish

  5. out chapter 14 today. Then we'll move into a new issue

  6. within the Corinthian church concerning the resurrection and

  7. really, really looking forward to those, to chapter 15 and the

  8. text there. But our assignment today is

    Isaiah 14 chapter mention

  9. chapter 14. And so that's where we'll be.

  10. We'll be in verses 26 through 40 this morning.

  11. We've been walking through chapters 12 through 14.

  12. If you've been here, you're kind of aware of this at this point.

  13. If you're new today, what I want you to understand is that Paul

  14. the apostle Paul is correcting. He's correcting A gifted but

  15. chaotic church. What he tells us in chapter 12

  16. is that the Spirit gives gifts, spiritual gifts for the common

  17. good, meaning it's for the building up of the congregation.

  18. It's that's for their edification, right?

  19. And so each believer is gifted with a spiritual gift to be used

  20. for the edification of the church.

  21. In chapter 13, he shows them that love is the more excellent

  22. way, that love should be the foundation of the operation of

  23. these gifts, that that love is the important matter.

  24. It's the thing that should be on their mind.

  25. And he's correcting their behavior because they haven't

  26. been operating in love. They've been operating with with

  27. selfishness and divisiveness, holding one gift or some gifts

  28. higher than other gifts and giving more prominent time to

  29. those with those more excellent gifts as they deemed them and

  30. not paying attention to the lesser gifts, so to speak.

  31. So in chapter 12 and chapter 13, you have this idea of the body

  32. of Christ and each person being gifted in certain ways, and some

  33. might be small, some might be large, but none of us can say to

  34. one another that we have no need of you.

  35. We all need one another. And so love is the more

  36. excellent way in chapter 13. Therefore, in chapter 14, what

  37. it gets to is that worship services, the collection of the

  38. church, the gathered church, as we come together for worship,

  39. these services must be edifying and understandable or decent and

  40. in order. They must be peaceable.

  41. They must promote God's peace, the peace of the Lord that

  42. dwells among the Saints through our unity in Christ or unity

  43. with one another. Paul elsewhere calls it the bond

  44. of the spirit of peace, and that's what he's after here in

  45. chapter 14. And so we have our final

  46. instructions on this bond of the spirit of peace, how our

  47. services should be decent and in order.

  48. Now, Corinth had zeal, all right.

  49. We can't fault them for not having zeal.

  50. Corinth had a lot of zeal, and zeal is a good thing.

  51. You know, in my own sons, I understand that God has wired

  52. them with testosterone, which means they're going to be

  53. zealous in some ways. They're going to be aggressive

  54. in nature. And this is good and right.

  55. It's according to God's design. But that needs to be channelled

  56. with self-control, right? Needs to be channelled with

  57. parameters, guardrails that help them exercise aggression and

  58. zeal in the right direction. And that's sort of what Paul's

  59. after here is Corinth is a church that's full of zeal, but

  60. they're without order, all right?

  61. They're, they're lacking order. They have noise, a lot of noise,

  62. but no clarity. All right.

  63. And so no one's being edified. There's spontaneity, which in

  64. some circles, even circles I grew up in, was held in high

  65. regard. The more spontaneous the

  66. service, the more spiritual it must be.

  67. And yet Paul says that spontaneity without submission

  68. is disorder, that it that it lacks clarity.

  69. So Paul with the with the shepherd's hook, so to speak,

  70. right? He's like a shepherd with a

  71. shepherd's shepherd staff with a hook.

  72. He's got Apostolic authority and he is shepherding, shepherding

  73. them back to the character of God himself.

  74. And that that's the point of chapter 14.

  75. He wants to show them what the character of God is and how the

  76. character of God should be present in our services, which

  77. he tells us in our, our, in our text, that God is not a God of

  78. confusion, but of peace. All right.

  79. God is not a God of confusion, but of peace.

  80. And so he's correcting them. He's bringing them back.

  81. He's trying to rein in the zealousness.

  82. He's trying to point it in the right directions.

  83. And so I think you'll see that as we walk through this passage

  84. today. Again, First Corinthians 1426

  85. through 40, if you would please stand in honor of the reading of

  86. God's Word. When I'm finished reading, I'll

  87. say this is the word of the Lord and you can join in response.

  88. Thanks be to God. All right, so First Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 14:26

  89. chapter 14, verse 26, What then? Brothers?

  90. When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a

  91. revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation.

  92. Let all things be done for building up.

  93. If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or three, or

  94. two, or at most 3, and each in turn, and let someone

  95. interprets. But if there's no one to

  96. interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to

  97. himself and to God. But two or three prophets speak,

  98. and let the others way would have said, If a revelation is

  99. made to another sitting there, let the first be silent.

  100. For you can all prophecy 1 by 1, so that all may learn, and all

  101. be encouraged. And the spirits of prophets are

  102. subjects subject to prophets. For God is not a God of

  103. confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the

  104. Saints, the women should keep silent in the churches they are

  105. not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the

  106. Law also says. If there's anything they desire

  107. to learn, let them ask their husbands at home.

  108. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

  109. Or was it from you that the word of God came?

  110. Or are you the only ones it has reached?

  111. If anyone thinks that he is a prophet or spiritual, he should

  112. acknowledge that the things I'm writing to you are a command of

  113. the Lord. If anyone does not recognize

  114. this, he is not recognized. So my brothers earnestly desire

  115. to prophecy and do not forbid speaking in tongues, but all

  116. things should be done decently and in order.

  117. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God, let's pray.

  118. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word, and we come

  119. before it today. And it's our hope to humble

  120. ourselves before your words, to submit ourselves to it.

  121. And so we ask that Your Spirit would help us to do precisely

  122. that, although that we would hold Your word in such high

  123. regard that we revoke the opinions and the wisdom of man,

  124. and we long for the wisdom of God, the truths of your Word.

  125. Lord, I thank you that this people here at New Life

  126. Community Church are a hungry people, and they hunger and

  127. thirst for righteousness. And so you have been faithful to

  128. fill them. And Lord, here we are yet again

  129. in pursuit of truth, in pursuit of your word, and we know that

  130. we will find you faithful to fill us.

  131. So, Lord, would you do that today?

  132. Would you open our hearts and our minds to to hear and to

  133. understand Your Word, to know it, to believe it, Lord, that we

  134. would also put these things into practice and bear the fruit of

  135. Your Word in every area of our life.

  136. It's in the name of Christ I ask these things, Amen, that you may

  137. be seated. My title for the sermon today

  138. comes from the text. God is not a God of confusion.

  139. The text says He's not a God of confusion, but of peace.

  140. So I want you to imagine for a moment inviting an unchurched

  141. neighbor to church this morning. Or maybe you really did.

  142. If. If so, good on you and welcome

  143. to your friend. And one kind of service.

  144. Say that five people speak all at once.

  145. No one explains what is happening.

  146. And your friend leaves saying, well, that was loud, but I

  147. haven't learned anything. I didn't gain anything from

  148. that. Imagine another kind of service,

  149. really, the kind we aim for each week, where God's word is read

  150. and it's it's explained. The prayers are clear songs

  151. teach or rehearse scriptural truths.

  152. And so your friend leaves saying, I understood those

  153. things. I was helped today.

  154. Which gathering best reflects a God of peace?

  155. I think we would all agree it's the latter because God is a God

  156. of peace and order. Here's the main point.

  157. If you're taking notes, you can write this down.

  158. Because God is a God of peace and order.

  159. Spirit filled worship must be intelligible, orderly, and

  160. submissive to God's Word. Spirit filled worship must be

  161. intelligible, orderly, and submissive to God's Word.

  162. This morning, the first point we'll come to is order for

  163. edification. We'll see that in verses 26

  164. through 33 A Secondly, we'll see submission in the assembly and

  165. verses 33 B through 35. And then finally, we'll see

  166. biblical authority and peace in verses 36 through 40.

  167. Along the way, I do hope to answer questions that I assume a

  168. congregation may have as we walk through the passage.

  169. So let's begin. Number one, order for

  170. edification, verses 26 through 33.

  171. A. In verse 26, Paul writes, what

  172. then, brothers, when you come together, each one has a hymn, a

  173. lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation.

  174. Let all these things be done for building up.

  175. So Paul lays out the agenda, right?

  176. He, he, he lays out that it is the building up of the

  177. congregation which must set the agenda for our worship services

  178. now to be done in a way that would build up the congregation

  179. now. Paul assumes abroad

  180. participation, right? He said.

  181. Each one has, each one has a hymn or a lesson, a revelation,

  182. a tongue or an interpretation, right?

  183. The, the problem is not the gifts.

  184. I want to reiterate that the problem is not the gifts.

  185. The problem is aimlessness in the gifts.

  186. They've, they've got no clarity. They've got no direction on

  187. where they're going with it. Everyone's participating, all

  188. right? Everyone's kind of doing their

  189. own thing. They're highlighting their own

  190. gifts. And so there's an aimlessness

  191. about what they're doing. And Paul's seeking to provide a

  192. target, right? The target is the bull's eye on

  193. the target is these things must be done to build up the church.

  194. And so if you're missing the mark, right, you're not hitting

  195. the bull's eye, then you have aimlessness.

  196. He gives the controlling purpose of that, right?

  197. It's the bull's eye for building up.

  198. Literally what that means is edification.

  199. It means a strengthening, it means a really a building in a

  200. sense. It's laying foundations.

  201. It's, you may think of building a house as a good analogy,

  202. right? You lay a foundation, you put up

  203. walls, you put on the roof. All right, you, you then go back

  204. into the house and you begin to build out the rooms.

  205. You begin to construct what their purposes are, what they're

  206. for, right? I suspect that none of you have

  207. a bedroom in your kitchen, right?

  208. You're not using the kitchen as a place to sleep.

  209. You're using the kitchen as a place to host, all right, The

  210. kitchens used as a place to prepare meals.

  211. It would be weird for there to be a bedroom in your kitchen

  212. unless you're remodeling like, and that's just where you have

  213. to sleep for a little while. But under normal circumstances,

  214. that would be strange. Well, this is what you have.

  215. You have a house that's in disorder here in Corinth.

  216. All right. And you may want to underline,

  217. if you're comfortable writing in your Bibles, that idea of for

  218. building up, let all things be done for building up.

  219. This is the litmus test for churches.

  220. It's the litmus test for everything that we do in

  221. gathered worship is how does this song we're going to sing

  222. build up the congregation? How does this sermon we're going

  223. to preach build up the congregation?

  224. How does this prayer we pray build up the congregation?

  225. How does the Lord's Supper practice each week build up the

  226. congregation? How does baptism on weeks we

  227. have baptisms? How do they build up the

  228. congregation, right? It becomes the litmus test for

  229. everything that we're doing before an element makes it into

  230. our liturgy, whether there be songs or testimonies or prayers

  231. or exhortations. The question has to be, will

  232. this build up the body? The question cannot be, is it

  233. exciting? Is it going to create a great

  234. worship experience for everyone? The question must be, how is it

  235. going to edify the church? All right, so that's where we

  236. want to be is how is it going to edify the church?

  237. And verse 27, Paul says if any speak in a tongue, let there be

  238. only two or three or two or at most 3 and each in turn and let

  239. someone interpret. So here Paul provides a

  240. regulation of tongues, right? He's saying clarity is more

  241. important than novelty. Clarity matters more than all of

  242. you speaking in tongues. All this 3 guardrails here as he

  243. addresses regulations for tongues.

  244. The first guardrail is number 2, or at most 3.

  245. The second is sequence, each in turn, not all at the same time,

  246. each in turn, and 3rd is interpretation.

  247. The third guardrail is interpretation.

  248. Interpretation. Let there be an interpretation,

  249. and if there's not, let him keep quiet.

  250. Let him remain silent, right? In chapter 14, Paul has stressed

  251. that uninterpreted tongues are unintelligible to the church and

  252. therefore they are useless for building up the body of Christ.

  253. They're not helpful. All right?

  254. Remember, in context, tongues are languages.

  255. We saw that in chapter chapter 14, verses 10 and 11.

  256. So whatever your view of their continuance today, the principle

  257. here must stand those guardrails, must stand the

  258. number, the sequence, the interpretation, those things

  259. must be present in a local worship service for these things

  260. to be practiced. There should be no speech in a

  261. worship service without understanding.

  262. In verse 28, Paul continues, But if there's no one to interpret,

  263. let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and

  264. to God. So Paul states a rule now for

  265. worship. Silence must exist where there

  266. is no interpretation or it cannot be explained what the one

  267. speaking in tongues is saying. He should not say anything, He

  268. should remain quiet, right? This is the first of three keep

  269. silent commands that you see in the passage this morning.

  270. Paul is telling the Corinthians that it is better to refrain

  271. than to fill the room with sound that does not edify.

  272. He's already said that it's better to speak 5 words of

  273. prophecy than to utter 10,000 words of a tongue that no one

  274. can understand, right? Why?

  275. Because prophecy builds up the church when we open our Bibles

  276. and we say, thus says the Lord, this is an edifying thing.

  277. It brings comfort, it brings peace, it brings healing.

  278. It's helpful to the soul, right? It calls sinners out of the

  279. darkness and into marvelous light there.

  280. So there's redemption in the spoken word of God.

  281. It also strengthens Christians, right?

  282. It helps us along our way. It sanctifies us.

  283. But we can become more Christ like, more godly, right?

  284. Learning how to follow him in the right way.

  285. So these people, Paul is saying, these people must resist the

  286. urge to say something merely to participate.

  287. All right, so I don't want to be left.

  288. Outlet me. Let me offer something.

  289. Well, they must resist the urge. Spear filled worship is not

  290. measured by how many speak, but by how much the church

  291. understands and benefits. All right.

  292. It's not measured by how many are speaking.

  293. It's measured by how many are edified, right?

  294. Is this an edifying worship service?

  295. That's again the litmus test here in verse 29.

  296. He says let two or three prophets speak and let others

  297. weigh what is said. So here we see that prophecy

  298. must be weighed. This was the practice of the

  299. other church. You couldn't just stand up and

  300. say, thus says the Lord, and everybody has to take it for

  301. granted. No, you say it and all the other

  302. prophets in the room, all the other leaders weigh what's being

  303. said, right? And again, Paul provides a two

  304. or three limit here, right? It's not that everyone should

  305. stand up and speak. There's a two or three limit.

  306. When Paul instructs the Corinthians to weigh the

  307. prophets, he's teaching them that they must discern or test

  308. their speech. They must see by which spirit

  309. they're speaking. Is it from the Spirit of God or

  310. is it from the spirit of another world?

  311. The church must never receive speech uncritically.

  312. Must never receive speech uncritically.

  313. When I ask you to open your Bibles at the beginning of a

  314. sermon, it's not a style choice. We don't have somebody walking

  315. around taking pictures with open Bibles in your laps.

  316. We're not looking for style points.

  317. What we're what we're trying to establish is an obedience

  318. choice. When we come to God's place of

  319. worship and we gather with the Saints, it must be obvious that

  320. we have gone to God's Word, right?

  321. That we've opened our Bibles and we've spoken from what God has

  322. said to us the way that he's revealed to us.

  323. It also helps you to be discerning in what we say right

  324. as you read the words. Is what Kyle says, is what

  325. Jasper says, is what one of the other elders or other teachers

  326. we put up here, is what they're saying true?

  327. Right. If it's not true, then let us be

  328. found liars, all right, let us be repentant, but let us be

  329. found liars in God's house. We don't want to utter things

  330. that are untrue, all right? We want you to be discerning of

  331. what we say. We want you to test what we say

  332. because God requires you to be this kind of a Christian.

  333. It requires you to understand in this way.

  334. In verse 30, Paul writes, if a revelation is made to another

  335. sitting there, let the first be silence, right?

  336. So Paul commands deference in real time.

  337. Even truly gifted speakers in Corinth must yield the spirits.

  338. Work then includes self restraint or self-control, which

  339. is one of the fruit of the Spirit.

  340. In a service of or in service of clarity.

  341. We ought to be restrained people, right?

  342. And the leaders in Corinth were being required to model this

  343. yieldedness to one another. Right, if something better

  344. serves the moment scripture to read, prayer to pray, truth to

  345. clarify, then they were being asked to yield.

  346. So what are the goals of orderly gathered worship services?

  347. What's the goal of it? Paul tells us plainly in verse

  348. 31. For you can all prophecy 1 by 1

  349. so that all may learn and all be encouraged to learn and

  350. encouraged right. The result of order is learning

  351. and encouragement. It's the result of order in a

  352. worship services that all are learning, all are being

  353. encouraged. What this means is that the head

  354. and the heart are working together, right An orderly

  355. worship service like expositional preaching, walking

  356. verse by verse through the text instructs the mind.

  357. It impacts the heart and it invites the will of the man

  358. right. So if people leave saying I felt

  359. a lot, but I did not learn God's Word, then we fell that this

  360. verse, we've grown a lot in this area.

  361. I can remember in our very first membership class nearly 11 years

  362. ago at this point, I can remember uttering these words to

  363. the people in the membership class.

  364. What we want for you here is that when you leave this place

  365. on Sunday mornings, we want you to sit in your car with your

  366. hands on the steering wheel and to think to yourself, man, that

  367. was amazing. What a great experience.

  368. How foolish, how foolish was I. But I praise God for His grace

  369. and growing us up. Praise God for His grace and

  370. leading us. If people leave saying I felt a

  371. lot but did not learn God's word, then we have failed Paul's

  372. instruction here. They'd be learning and

  373. encouraged. If they learned but we're not

  374. encouraged, then we've also failed this verse.

  375. There should be learning with encouragement.

  376. In verse 32, Paul says in the spirits of prophets are subject

  377. to prophets. So any claims of being carried

  378. away by the spirit are corrected here.

  379. Any claims of I just couldn't control myself any any claims of

  380. you know, that was a word of the Lord and yet it's not aligning

  381. with the scriptures. Those things are being corrected

  382. here. The spirits of the prophets are

  383. subject to prophets that the Spirit of God is not going to

  384. get his people in such a frenzy that they lack self-control.

  385. This is contrary to the holy laughter and whole body shakes

  386. experienced and praised often in charismatic circles today.

  387. These things are not decent and in order.

  388. Authentic spirituality must be governed.

  389. It must be governed by the word of the Lord.

  390. Now, we're not saying that God kills personality or that He

  391. kills zeal or any of those things.

  392. Remember, we're saying that God channels these things in right

  393. directions so that the body is being built up, right?

  394. So the body is matured. They're governed, not

  395. uncontrolled, right? They must be governed by the

  396. Lord, right? I couldn't help myself.

  397. It's not a justification for your children and home when they

  398. haul off and hit their brother. And so it shouldn't be a

  399. justification for hauling off and doing whatever we want in a

  400. worship service apart from the Spirit of God, right?

  401. It's not a, it's not a justification for disorder in

  402. worship. And finally, in verse 33, A for

  403. God is not a God of confusion, but of peace.

  404. So why are all these things happening?

  405. Well, Paul shows that our theology must undergird our

  406. liturgy. Our theology must undergird our

  407. liturgy. Confusion means instability.

  408. It means there's disorder, right?

  409. We don't want confusion in a worship service.

  410. We want peace. And when we see that God is not

  411. a God of confusion, he's not a God of disorder, He's not an

  412. instable God. How many of you would want to

  413. worship an instable God? Not me.

  414. I don't want a God of peace. I want a God of order.

  415. I want a God who this is decent and a God who's sovereign in

  416. power, of course, but a God who's governing all things for

  417. his glory. That's, that's what we want, all

  418. right? And so peace means wholeness

  419. means harmony. There's a togetherness, right?

  420. The whole body is working together.

  421. There's harmony among the body. There's harmony in the worship

  422. service, not just in the singing.

  423. Our liturgy must mirror God's life.

  424. Our liturgy must mirror his heart.

  425. Our liturgy must mirror who he is.

  426. You can write this down if you'd like.

  427. Doctrine shapes doxology. Doctrine must shape doxology.

  428. What we understand about God, doctrine, right?

  429. The things that God has revealed to us about himself, that thing

  430. must shape doxology. There's no greater example.

  431. Well, there's several great examples.

  432. One of my favorite examples, let me word it that way, is in

  433. Romans Chapter 11, when Paul comes to the end of chapters one

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  434. through 11 before launching into a new conversation where he's

  435. just expounded on thoroughly salvation, rebellion,

  436. sanctification. He's expanded on these things so

  437. thoroughly At the end of that, he's just concludes it all with

  438. praise, with doxology. All right.

  439. And that is, it's instructive to us that the doctrine of Romans

  440. one through 11 should lead us to praise like Paul does at the end

  441. of the chapter there. It should lead us to want to

  442. praise him, not question him, should lead us to want to praise

  443. Him and not doubt him. Doctrine shapes doxology.

  444. Who God is determines how we worship him.

  445. It must determine how we worship him.

  446. So maybe some of the questions that you would have from this

  447. part of the text is does each one has?

  448. When Paul says each one has, does that mean that everyone

  449. must speak weekly? All the introverts are here or

  450. hoping for a no right now. All right, no, it doesn't mean

  451. that everyone must speak weekly. Weekly.

  452. What it does, though, is it affirms widespread gifting, all

  453. right? It's not about one man standing

  454. in the pulpit week after week after week after week, being the

  455. sole man of God, the one who hears from the Lord, and

  456. everyone else must walk in tow with him.

  457. It affirms widespread gifting. A plurality of elders A plow

  458. out, a plurality of gifted men who can teach God's Word.

  459. It doesn't give us guaranteed airtime, right?

  460. Often each week, really, the elders are yielding to one of

  461. the other elders to stand up and proclaim the word of God.

  462. All right, So we're not guaranteeing that every elder

  463. gets airtime even the aim is edification.

  464. The aim is that the church would be strengthened.

  465. And so that controls access to the microphone that determines

  466. who should speak and when they should speak.

  467. Another question that may come are the two or three, whether

  468. it's in tongues or in prophecy, are those hard caps for all

  469. time? Well, the principle is timeless.

  470. Yes, limited intelligible, curated participation is what

  471. Paul is showing here. All right.

  472. Must be used for the edification of the church.

  473. Second point, we come to submission and the Assembly.

  474. All right. Verses 33, B through 35.

  475. Let me read it again because it's been a moment since we

  476. first read it. As in all the churches of the

  477. Saints, the women should keep silent in the churches, for they

  478. are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the

  479. law also says. If there's anything they desire

  480. to learn, let them ask their husbands at home, for it is

  481. shameful for a woman to speak in church.

  482. All right, so as you may suspect already, this is a hotly

  483. contested paragraph. All right, so let's go through

  484. it carefully. Let's go through it in context,

  485. and let's allow Scripture to interpret Scripture where we

  486. need it to. All right, so in verse 33 B,

  487. Paul lays out a universal norm as in all the churches of the

  488. Saints. This is what we call a

  489. transcultural proclamation, right?

  490. This is for all the churches of the Saints both present in the

  491. world that Paul's writing in and present in the world today and

  492. throughout history from us back to them and in the future.

  493. This is transcultural, as in all the churches of the Saints.

  494. So what he's saying is I want you Corinthians, and I want us

  495. today to understand that what follows is not a Corinth only

  496. rule, right, which is often the argument.

  497. This is a cultural thing only. Now this is not a Corinth only

  498. rule. When Paul says, as in all the

  499. churches of the Saints, he's negating the cultural arguments

  500. and God's peace and order are for all churches at all times.

  501. Amen. One of you agrees.

  502. Good off to a good start. Verse 34 reveals A situational

  503. silence and also role clarity. Situational silence and role

  504. clarity. Look at 34 again.

  505. The women should keep silent in the churches, for they are not

  506. permitted to speak, but should be in submission as the law also

  507. says. Maybe that's why I didn't get

  508. any Amen from the ladies a moment ago.

  509. It's not saying you can't say Amen, all right.

  510. And if you can't say Amen, say Ouch as our dear passed on,

  511. Brother Vodi Baulkham says so. We've already heard two keep

  512. silent commands, one in verse 28, one in verse 30 concerning

  513. tongues and prophecy. This is the third in context

  514. here, the speaking being restricted is not all forms of

  515. vocal participation because that would contradict what we looked

  516. at in Chapter 11 verse 5, which was some time ago.

  517. I totally understand that was last fall right?

  518. And so we'll get to it in a moment.

  519. But there what we see is that women pray and prophecy by by

  520. joining the church in prayers, singing and agreeing with God's

  521. word as it's being taught. The the restriction then is

  522. placed on authoritative governing speech in the

  523. assembled church, especially that weighing and judging the

  524. testing of the prophets. It's also being applied to the

  525. exercise of teaching authority. All right, now this is in line.

  526. This is where we have to let Scripture interpret Scripture.

  527. This is in line with what Paul teaches in first Timothy 2:11

    1 Timothy 2:11

  528. and 12:00 where he writes, let a woman learn quietly with all

  529. submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach

  530. or to exercise authority over a man.

  531. Rather she is to remain quiet. So immediately after those

  532. verses, we get First Timothy 3:00, which gives us the

  533. requirements for elders just to be a man who's been chosen by

  534. God, set apart by the Spirit. There's a he has a desire to

  535. serve as an elder. He's a husband of one wife, all

  536. right. He's above reproach.

  537. He's self controlled. There's a litany of things there

  538. that he is to be all right, but it is a him.

  539. It is a he. Pronouns matter here.

  540. Let a woman learn quietly with all submissivists.

  541. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a

  542. man. Rather, she is to remain quiet.

  543. So that's First Timothy 2:11 and 12:00 here.

    1 Timothy 2:11

  544. What we have is very similar wording.

  545. The women should keep silent in the churches, for they are not

  546. permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the law

  547. also says. We'll get to that in a moment.

  548. No, we'll get to it now. Sorry.

  549. As the law also says, refers to the creation order.

  550. All right, He's he's, he's bringing this, he's grounding

  551. the argument in creation. So again, I think that verse 33

  552. B is plenty to say that the cultural argument doesn't stand

  553. as in all the churches of the Saints.

  554. That's plenty, right? But just in case that's not

  555. plenty, he also grounds it in the creation order, Genesis 2,

  556. where you have the man created. He's to work and keep the Garden

  557. of Eden. He is then brought to this

  558. realization that he's alone. God says it's not good for this

  559. man to be alone. And so he creates a woman for

  560. him who's to be a helper fit for him.

  561. So she's to help in these things, but not the lead in

  562. these things, right? And Paul grounds the argument in

  563. First Timothy 2 in the very same verses Genesis chapter 2, Paul

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  564. uses the creation order to found his teachings on Mel headship as

  565. well in First Corinthians 11, which we have looked at but also

  566. in Ephesians 5. All right, so I wrestled with

  567. this text this week mainly working to harmonize.

  568. I wasn't I wasn't upset about what it said.

  569. I think our church believes this well.

  570. But I wrestled with this text mainly working to harmonize with

  571. First Corinthians 11 because there a woman is instructed to

  572. pray and prophecy and here she's being told to keep silent.

  573. So what? What's going on?

  574. Why the differences? And here are the 2 main

  575. conclusions that I think we're able to draw from Scripture.

  576. The 1st is different kinds of speech in the same gathered

  577. setting. All right, different kinds of

  578. speech in the same gathered setting.

  579. So First Corinthians 11 fives assumes that women pray and

  580. prophecy. They may offer Spirit empowered

  581. speech, but that's to be under visible submission, which was a

  582. head covering. There again, you can hold the

  583. the that the head covering is merely her husband.

  584. My belief is that it's also a cloth of some sort.

  585. All right, that there's a covering.

  586. All right, we looked at that. If you're interested in that

  587. teaching, you can go back and find it on in our sermons.

  588. But she should do so under visible submission and subject

  589. to testing. All right, she's subject to

  590. testing. As I mentioned earlier, this

  591. passage restricts, restricts women from authoritative

  592. speaking that governs the assembly, right, especially the

  593. weighing and judging of prophecies and any teaching over

  594. the gathered church. So verse 29, but also first

  595. Timothy 211 through 12 as a cross reference there.

  596. You also want to note the three Keep Silent commands, 2830 and

  597. 34. All are situational and they're

  598. meant to preserve order. They're not blanket gags on all

  599. speech. Again, here, the silence is

  600. about governing and deciding speech.

  601. It's about weighing and testing speech.

  602. It's not about congregational participation, such as singing,

  603. praying, confessing or testifying, or even offering an

  604. Amen. The second thing that we see are

  605. different settings. I think I've kind of made that

  606. point, but I want to make it more clearly.

  607. In First Corinthians 11/2 through 16, Paul addresses the

  608. propriety for men and women in general Christian gatherings or

  609. smaller home settings, right? Churches would often meet house

  610. to house, and there you might see women pray, you might see

  611. them prophecy with appropriate signs of authority.

  612. In First Corinthians 1426 or 40, he's addressing the church, and

  613. we know that because he says when you have come together as a

  614. church in 1118, but also in 1423.

  615. So the official assembly of the church, Sunday worship under

  616. elders where authoritative speech is regulated, including a

  617. prohibit, including prohibiting women speaking in the

  618. authoritative sense. So then the question becomes

  619. what's allowed and what's not allowed, right?

  620. What's allowed and what's not allowed?

  621. Well, allowable things that are allowable and gathered worship

  622. would be congregational singing, singing some sort of a meaning

  623. responsive prayers. Sorry, congregational praying, a

  624. meaning responsive prayers, those sort of things.

  625. Secondly, congregational singing and public scripture result

  626. responses, right? All the Saints are instructed to

  627. sing. An elder might get up.

  628. We kind of do this in our call to worship where we're saying

  629. something together, right? We're declaring some things

  630. together and it's often led by, it's always led by qualified

  631. men, but we say those things together.

  632. Another thing that would be allowable testimony and

  633. Thanksgiving, right? The testimony, Thanksgiving,

  634. these things are non authoritative.

  635. They're curated for edification. We've seen this a few times even

  636. in our members meetings. We see them often in home groups

  637. where a woman will testify to the things that the Lord's doing

  638. in her life. She'll give thanks for the

  639. things that the Lord's doing in her life.

  640. She'll even share things that the Lord taught her as she was

  641. going through the study in Home group, right?

  642. This is allowed in the Apostolic era.

  643. Women could offer a prophetic revelation 11/5.

  644. We see that in a way that did not place them in the judges

  645. seat all. Right.

  646. And that honored roll order with a covering as the sign, all

  647. right. So things that would not be

  648. allowed in the stated assembly, authoritative teaching or

  649. expounding of Scripture to the mixed congregation, we would not

  650. permit. Paul is not permitting a woman

  651. to stand up and preach. There are no such thing in

  652. Scripture as lady preachers. All right, it does exist in our

  653. world, but the Scriptures do not affirm this.

  654. Secondly, the formal weighing judging of prophecies or

  655. doctrine in the assembly they're they're told to ask at home.

  656. Right. That sort of formal weighing and

  657. judging evaluates it. It governs the act, and that

  658. belongs to the male leadership or the elders of the church.

  659. Also, you see, disruptive interrogation.

  660. One thing here that some commentators pointed out as I

  661. was walking through this is that the women, like everyone else,

  662. were confused by what was going on.

  663. And so they're asking questions. What in the world is taking

  664. place? What's going on here?

  665. What's happening? You know, And so disruptive

  666. interrogation that that shifts the learner into a governing

  667. role, right? And so, Paul says, they should

  668. ask their husbands at home. They should pursue understanding

  669. without destabilizing the order of worship.

  670. So men and women are equal in dignity.

  671. We affirm this wholeheartedly. They're equal in value, but

  672. they're distinct in their roles. God has given men and women

  673. different roles, distinct from one another, complementary of

  674. one another. God's does not design is not a

  675. demotion, even though the third way feminism would have you

  676. believe it is, and even first wave for that matter.

  677. It's not a demotion, it's wisdom.

  678. God is laying out wisdom here. God's peace and edification are

  679. advanced when gifts flourish within the lanes that God

  680. assigns to us. Right?

  681. His peace and his edification. His wisdom advances when gifts

  682. are allowed to flourish within the lanes that God assigns to

  683. us. So since revelatory prophecy has

  684. ceased with the Apostolic foundation, the abiding

  685. principle is this. Women fully and vigorously

  686. participate in all the non authoritative elements of

  687. worship and ministry, singing, praying with the body,

  688. scripture, memory, recitation, testimonies, discipling women

  689. and children, and 1000 other great works.

  690. God does not, he's not bound women to some sort of box,

  691. though. He's unleashed women into the

  692. roles that he's designed them for, right?

  693. And that's a good thing for the body of Christ.

  694. The whole body is built up in this way.

  695. So authoritative preaching and Speaking of the gathered church

  696. that belongs those formal doctrinal proclamations that

  697. remains the responsibility of qualified men and elders.

  698. So in summary, 11/5 affirms women's meaningful non

  699. authoritative participation, whereas 1434 and 35 guards the

  700. assemblies governing speech, the weighing and authoritative

  701. teaching so that the church displays the God of peace decent

  702. and in order, as verse 40 will show us.

  703. So therefore, Paul says women are to pursue understanding

  704. without disrupting the order right in verse 35.

  705. If there's anything they desire to learn, let them ask their

  706. husbands at home. British shameful for a woman to

  707. speak in church. All right.

  708. Paul says women are to pursue understanding without disrupting

  709. the order. Shameful in this setting.

  710. When Paul says this is shameful, shameful in the setting means

  711. that it's out of place. It's out of place, right?

  712. And so therefore it becomes shameful.

  713. It'd be like if a man wore, you know, his swimming trunks to his

  714. wedding. It's out of place, all right?

  715. It's not decent and in order. I know that's a silly analogy,

  716. but it's the best I had on the fly.

  717. Brothers and sisters, I'm sorry. It could have been much worse.

  718. It's shameful. Right.

  719. Because it's out of place with the honor and order of the

  720. gathered church, Paul commends eager learning.

  721. Questions are good, sisters. They're good and right.

  722. But Paul urges that they be channeled in ways that do not

  723. destabilize the worship service. Let them ask their husbands at

  724. home. All right, So men, there's a

  725. charge here for us, is there not?

  726. I mean, you can read it and say, yeah, women should keep silent.

  727. That's not the charge for husbands.

  728. The charge for husbands is let them ask their husbands at home,

  729. which says a certain thing about what husbands should be men.

  730. We see that we must be men of learning.

  731. We must be men of understanding, such that we can adequately

  732. teach our wives and children God's Word.

  733. We should always be willing to receive their questions and work

  734. toward biblical answers. But we have to be men of

  735. learning to do this. In Ephesians 5, you're quite

  736. literally charged with the washing of your wife with the

  737. water of the word. Well, what that means is you're

  738. to be a primary resource of her growth and godliness, Learning

  739. the Word of God in such a way that you can apply it to your

  740. wife's life all right. Learning the word of God in such

  741. a way that you can, he says there to nourish and cherish

  742. your wife as you apply these things.

  743. All right, So it's not some domineering.

  744. I'm the head of the house. I have, you know, all the

  745. answers you need to submit to everything I say.

  746. That's really stupid. It's really foolish behavior.

  747. But that's often what ignorant men do.

  748. And I don't mean ignorant in the sense of stupid.

  749. I mean ignorant in the sense of unknowing men that that's often

  750. where they go with that verse. And then that becomes another

  751. kind of patriarchy that really is evil, another kind of

  752. headship that is evil. Right.

  753. But what we're told is that we're to be the kind of man who

  754. nourish and cherish our wives, who love them as Christ loves

  755. the church. And so we're able to wash them

  756. with the water of the Word, meaning we know the Word of God.

  757. Our hearts and our souls have been washed by the Word of God.

  758. Our minds have been renewed by the Spirit of God, according to

  759. Romans 12/2, right? We're not following the ways of

  760. the world. And we're seeking to help our

  761. wives walk in line with the Word of God.

  762. All right, we're learning how to do that in the right ways.

  763. So that's Ephesians 5 and Ephesians 6.

  764. Just a few verses later, Paul continues to harp on what godly

  765. headship looks like in the home. In Ephesians 6, we're charged

  766. with raising our children with the discipline and instruction

  767. of the Lord. All right, so discipline is

  768. often one of those ones we we find easy to get right.

  769. All right, it's easy to be an authoritative kind of

  770. disciplinarian in your home. Maybe you're wired that way,

  771. maybe you're raised that way, so it just comes real natural for

  772. you. Well, that that's a part of it

  773. and it's a part of it that can be grossly taken out of context

  774. if you're not also understanding that you're to raise them with

  775. the instruction of the Lord, right?

  776. We have to raise our children in the instruction of the Lord,

  777. which means we are to be a primary resource of their

  778. exposure to the law as we lay down right discipline.

  779. But we're also an exposure, their primary place of exposure

  780. to the gospel as we apply grace and mercy, as we show them

  781. Christ. And in all of those things

  782. working together, you become a primary resource of their growth

  783. and godliness as well. You become the head of your home

  784. in a way that your wife and children flourish under your

  785. rule, under your leadership. I think we also find application

  786. for the church in this text as well.

  787. We must reserve authoritative, authoritative teaching and the

  788. formal weighing of doctrine in the in the assembly to qualified

  789. men and elders. That's one of the applications

  790. here. Another application is that we

  791. must maximize women's robust participation within scriptures,

  792. design of them, congregational singing, Scripture reading where

  793. appropriate, and corporate prayer, inappropriate settings,

  794. maybe home groups, small groups, those sort of things.

  795. Our Home group would practice this just by going around the

  796. room reading a verse at a time of the Scripture that we're

  797. studying. So men and women and children

  798. who are present are participating in Scripture

  799. reading testimonies. It's another way that women

  800. should have robust participation, sharing, telling

  801. of what the Lord's done in their life all.

  802. Right. Mom did this just several weeks

  803. ago as she told of the great work of the Lord in her life

  804. prior to her baptism. All right, This is a great way

  805. to maximize a woman's robust participation in the General

  806. Assembly discipling women and children.

  807. Titus 2 is very clear and it's call for women to be involved,

  808. not the primary involvement, but hugely involved in the

  809. discipling of other women and in children.

  810. Older women are to teach, to train younger women how to love

  811. their husbands and children. Well, all right, that's

  812. discipleship. That's taking doctrine and

  813. applying it to life, right? God has saved us.

  814. God loves us. God's given us this gift of

  815. being women, right? We're to be wives and mothers.

  816. God's called us to this task. And so how do we carry the love

  817. of God, the grace of God, the mercy of God, the wisdom of God

  818. into our home, right? That often takes older women

  819. sitting down with younger women and saying here's how we walk

  820. this out. Here's how we obey these

  821. commands. Leadership and ministries that

  822. are fitting to Titus 2 is also a lap every good work in the home

  823. right. Like I said, 1000 other good

  824. works, 1/3 application is there ought to be clear avenues for

  825. questions, clear avenues for learning with questions, whether

  826. that's classes, whether it's elders making themselves

  827. available during the week, whether it's home discussions so

  828. that no one is left unheard. All right, we want there to be

  829. questions, clear avenues for that.

  830. And so finally, because Paul lays this out as a transcultural

  831. norm, our practice as a church is to be honoring, protective

  832. and proactive in cultivating the gifts of men and women and to

  833. disciple them in their God-given roles according to their divine

  834. nature and design so that we can glorify him in the church, at

  835. our homes and in the culture. Amen.

  836. Hopefully we can all agree on that being our task #3 Biblical

  837. authority and peace. 36 through 40 Biblical authority and peace.

  838. In verse 36, Corinth learns that they are not the standard.

  839. Another hard hitting comment from Paul.

  840. Or was it from you Corinth, that the word of God came?

  841. Are you the authority or are you the only ones that the word of

  842. God has reached? You can hear the sarcasm in

  843. Paul's questions. They're two cutting questions,

  844. and questions have a way of exposing things that need to be

  845. exposed here. It's exposing Corinthian pride,

  846. right? Churches receive the word.

  847. Corinth as a church has received the word.

  848. Churches do not invent the word, and Corinth is not the inventor

  849. of God's Word. Brothers and sisters, we do not

  850. discover worship, rather we receive worship from God.

  851. God is the one who creates us for worship.

  852. We become new creations in Christ Jesus.

  853. Old things passed away, all things becoming new, walking in

  854. the reconciliation with God. All of this is laid out in 2nd

  855. Corinthians 5. And we become Proclaimers of

  856. that reconciliation. We become ambassadors for this

  857. message of reconciliation. Why?

  858. Because we received it from God. We didn't create it.

  859. We didn't discover it ourselves. God, in his great mercy, with

  860. great love and great grace, saved us from the pit of hell

  861. and made us worshippers. All right.

  862. And so we become Proclaimers of worship and verse 37, we have

  863. the recognition test. We might call it all right.

  864. If anyone thinks that he is a prophet or spiritual, he should

  865. acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of

  866. the Lord. Paul saying, look, you should

  867. recognize this if you're a prophet, if you're spiritual,

  868. this will bear witness with you as being true.

  869. You should recognize this. You should acknowledge the

  870. things that I'm writing to you as a command of the Lord.

  871. So to be spiritual, all right, sometimes we wonder what does it

  872. mean to be spiritual? To be spiritual means that we

  873. submit to Apostolic doctrine. We submit to God's Word in full.

  874. Paul's pin carries the Lord's command, he says This is a

  875. command of the Lord. Any leader who dismisses

  876. biblical instructions for worship, however gifted they

  877. might be, they are disqualifying themselves from spiritual

  878. credibility. They're no longer above

  879. reproach. Right.

  880. And so we must submit to biblical authority if we're

  881. going to have order and peace in our worship services, we must

  882. submit. We must acknowledge this.

  883. We must not think that we are a prophet of some other kind, that

  884. we're higher than Paul, that we're higher than God's word.

  885. And so therefore we don't have to submit.

  886. No, if we think that we're spiritual, we must acknowledge

  887. the things that are being written here as being truth from

  888. God. And so we submit to them.

  889. Glad heartedly all. Right.

  890. We lay ourselves down at them, we humble ourselves before them,

  891. and we trust that God's Word is right.

  892. We have a warning in verse 38 for anyone who won't do that.

  893. It's a stark warning. If anyone does not recognize

  894. this, if he doesn't acknowledge these things as true, then he is

  895. not recognized. It's a grave warning there.

  896. So when a person refuses to recognize Apostolic authority

  897. when a first, when a person refuses to recognize, in other

  898. words, the authority of the scriptures that leads to their

  899. non recognition, they they should not be recognized.

  900. Their authority has no weight. It has no meaning any longer,

  901. and so the church, both locally and universally, the church must

  902. not platform those who are unsubmissive to God's Word all.

  903. Right. What are ways that we can

  904. platform those who are unsubmissive to God's Word?

  905. We may find a kernel of truth in something they've said on a

  906. social media reel and share it. You're platforming men and women

  907. often who are unsubmissive to God's Word.

  908. And so we must weigh the things they say.

  909. Now, that could be really hard when someone has hours and hours

  910. of podcasts, hours and hours of sermons or teaching, you know,

  911. books and books of things they've written.

  912. But we must be discerning brothers and sisters, even of

  913. the people we would platform on social media.

  914. As careless as that might seem, it's important.

  915. Right. In the church, elders must guard

  916. the pulpit, elders must guard the Mike.

  917. Authority is always accountable to the Word of God.

  918. Authority does not stand on its own right, that the only

  919. authority we have is the authority that's been given to

  920. us by God as we humble ourselves before Him.

  921. If someone will not submit themselves to God's Word, then

  922. Paul is saying they should not be recognized by the church.

  923. So therefore the church cannot approve them.

  924. Rather the church must rebuke them.

  925. The church must pray for their submission to God and his word

  926. to seek their reconciliation with the Lord.

  927. And verse 39, Paul teaches A balanced zeal.

  928. So my brothers earnestly desire to prophecy and do not forbid

  929. speaking in tongues in the Apostolic era.

  930. Both gifts are both gifts had a regulated place, earnestly

  931. desire prophecy, do not forbid speaking in tongues.

  932. Paul refuses both extremes, right?

  933. We're not going to be chaotic. The church should not be

  934. enraptured in chaos. But we're also not going to

  935. allow for prohibition, all right.

  936. We should do these things in the right way.

  937. So legitimate languages, the gift of tongues, these were

  938. limited in purpose and very likely in duration, but as long

  939. as it was still active in the early church, they were not to

  940. be hindered. They should be done in the right

  941. way, decent and in order. But prophecy was the most

  942. desirable gift to be exercised because of its ability to edify,

  943. because of its ability to exhort, because of its ability

  944. to comfort with the truth. And so we ought to still desire

  945. the ends of revelatory gifts, which is intelligible

  946. proclamation that builds up the body of Christ.

  947. So that means we maximize expositional preaching, we

  948. maximize Scripture, rich singing and prayers.

  949. We maximize the ordinances that Christ has given to the church,

  950. baptism and the Lord's Supper, right?

  951. Because these things are the kinds of things that edify,

  952. exhort, and comfort us with the truth of God's Word.

  953. And then in verse 40, Paul provides the summary principle.

  954. But all things should be done decently and in order or read

  955. the word decently, we ought to think of fittingly.

  956. They, they fit well, right? They, they fit the purpose.

  957. What's the purpose? Edification.

  958. They're becoming right decently means becomingly means it's

  959. attractive. It's good for us.

  960. It's obvious that it's good. Right order.

  961. I will read the word order. We ought to think of arranged in

  962. sequence, right? The things are arranged.

  963. They're they're meant to build. They're they're meant to edify.

  964. They're meant to strengthen. They're done with purpose.

  965. Beauty and structure belong together, right?

  966. Beauty and structure belong together.

  967. Order is not cold. Order is lovely when it reflects

  968. the God of peace. Order is not cold.

  969. It is lovely when it reflects the God of peace.

  970. So there's a checklist maybe that we could run through for

  971. application on this. Number one would be

  972. intelligibility. All right.

  973. Do we have intelligible worship services, plain explanations,

  974. clear scripture readings, understandable prayers, so on

  975. and so forth? Secondly, limits in sequence.

  976. Is it one voice at a time? Is it curated participation?

  977. Are there intentional transitions, those sort of

  978. things? Can everybody follow along?

  979. Is there a clear limit, a clear sequence?

  980. Thirdly, weighing an oversight. Elders test teaching.

  981. The congregation becomes Bereans right.

  982. Weighing the word of God against the word of God.

  983. Weighing the spoken word of God against the Word of God.

  984. Right. Role clarity Another checklist.

  985. Qualified men bear the load of authoritative teaching.

  986. Women's gifts flourish in biblically fitted lanes or the

  987. roles clear in a church. And then finally Apostolic

  988. submission, right? Or biblical submission.

  989. What does the Scripture require is our question, Not what do we

  990. prefer? What do the Scriptures require

  991. of us? Right.

  992. So who weighs teaching today? I hope this has been plain, but

  993. I want to make it more plain by answering the question outright.

  994. Who weighs teaching today? Elders first must weigh the

  995. teaching of God's Word, then a word saturated congregation

  996. weighs the teaching of God's Word.

  997. And we do those things under confessional standards.

  998. All right. Confessional standards include

  999. things like the New Hampshire Confession of Faith, which is

1000. our church's confession of faith.

1001. Another really helpful 11 I use very, very often is the 1689

1002. London Baptist Confession of Faith.

1003. And another one that I find very helpful is the Baptist Catechism

1004. with has questions and answers in it.

1005. Those documents serve as guardrails.

1006. They are not authoritative, but they serve as guardrails as we

1007. strive to align ourselves with God's Word as the primary, all

1008. sufficient and infallible, infallible authority in our

1009. lives. OK, so who weighs the teaching

1010. elders then? The congregation under

1011. confessional standards? What does decently and or and

1012. and in order? Yeah, that was tough.

1013. What does decently and in order feel like?

1014. Well, it's warmth without whirlwinds, right?

1015. It's the difference between sitting in a hurricane and

1016. sitting in a calm, peaceful spring day.

1017. All right? It's reverence without rigidity.

1018. It's it's clarity without quenching the Spirit.

1019. Church order and worship is not about fussiness, it's about

1020. love. Order and worship is about love.

1021. When we plan our services, when we limit them, when we sequence

1022. them for understanding, what we're communicating is that we

1023. love the Saints that Jesus has purchased with his blood.

1024. We love them. And submission and worship is

1025. not about power plays. It's about peace.

1026. The peace of God ruling among the people gladly under his

1027. word. The God of peace has made peace

1028. by his blood on the cross. And if you're outside of Christ

  1029. today, you're not. You're an unbeliever.

1030. You haven't submitted yourself to the Lord.

1031. Then your life is no doubt noisy and your heart is disoriented.

1032. It's disordered. And so I implore you to come to

1033. Christ today to lay your sins at His feet, to find forgiveness in

1034. Him, to understand that Christ alone can reconcile you to the

1035. Father, and to also understand that He will give you His

1036. spirits who produces self-control and peace, among

1037. many other things. So let's commit together that

1038. everything we do is for building up.

1039. Everything we do is for building up the body.

1040. Nothing we do is to be without understanding.

1041. Everything should be under Scripture always and for all

1042. time, because God is not a God of confusion, but a God of

1043. peace. And so we want to promote the

1044. peace of God in the lives of His people and in the lives of those

1045. who have yet come to him. Brothers and sisters, remember

1046. that spirit filled worship must be intelligible, orderly, and

  1047. submissive to God's Word. Let's pray.

1048. Heavenly Father, we thank you for this word that we've studied

1049. this morning. And Lord, I just want to ask

1050. that you would make this church a living picture of all that

1051. we've seen in chapters 12 through 14, but especially of

1052. what we've seen today in verse 26 through 40.

1053. May all that we do, the intelligible, may all that we do

1054. be orderly. May all that we do be

1055. submissive. May all that we do be joyfully

1056. alive in the Spirit. And Father, I pray that there's

1057. a church, but I also want to pray that for the members here

1058. that their lives too would be intelligible, orderly,

1059. submissive, and joyfully alive in your spirit.

1060. Father, we understand from chapter 12 that you've gifted

1061. everyone for the purpose of edifying the church.

1062. And so therefore, everyone has a responsibility before you to

1063. walk in step with you, to have their lives governed by you as

1064. their Lord, to submit to you, to humble themselves before you.

1065. And if they'll do that as Christians who have an

1066. individual relationship with the Father, then what we'll see is a

1067. church corporately where individuals walk together in

1068. unity is we'll see true unity. We'll experience peace.

1069. We'll understand that God is not a God of confusion, but a God of

1070. peace. And so, Lord, would you do those

1071. things here among us? Would you continue to sanctify

1072. us, continue to strengthen us, Lord, even as this Word has been

1073. pressed upon us this morning? Would you help us to respond in

1074. faith to it? Help us not to have hearts of

1075. rebellion any longer, but help us to submit to Your Word by the

1076. power of Your Spirit? Would you reveal to us those

1077. areas where we are unsubmissive? And God would you lead us in

1078. Christ likeness and Father, it is my prayer of that, if there's

1079. anyone here who is not yet a believer, that you would draw

1080. them to yourself, that you would save them by calling them out of

1081. darkness and in the marvel marvelous light.

1082. Or that they would see the error of their ways clearly.

1083. That they would see that they have no Lord but themselves,

1084. their own desires. Let them see, Lord, that they

1085. are not in fellowship with the God of heaven and earth.

1086. Rather, they've rebelled against Him willingly, even gladly at

1087. times. And Father, would you bring them

1088. to their knees this morning in repentance?

1089. Would you convict them of their sin?

1090. And would you reveal Christ to them, the only one who's able to

1091. save us? Would you grant them new life

1092. today? I'm going to be a moment now to

1093. pray there in your seat, not to seek the Lord.

1094. Maybe you need to confess sins. Maybe you need to examine these

1095. scriptures and see where the Lord's calling you to believe

1096. them today. Whatever it is, you have a

1097. moment now to pray, just you and the Father.

1098. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your grace this morning.

1099. We thank you for calling us. We thank you for equipping us,

1100. for molding and shaping us. We thank you, God, that as the

1101. Word testifies over and over again, you are always faithful

1102. and steadfast in love. Not only does that say something

1103. about your character, it says something about ours.

1104. We are not always faithful. We are not steadfast in love,

1105. and so we need you daily. But God, we thank you that you

1106. never leave us. You never forsake us.

1107. You remain faithful and steadfast in love even when

1108. we're found not doing so. And so, Lord, we thank you that

1109. you have dealt with us yet again today in faithfulness and love.

1110. We thank you for Christ, who has died to save us from our sins,

1111. and He's the one who makes the way to you possible.

1112. We praise you for that. It's in the name of Christ I

  1113. pray. Amen.
