Hey there, brothers and sisters. Welcome back to Truckish Church,
-
the podcast where we take the Word of God on
-
the road with us. Whether you're out on the highway,
-
waiting at a way station, or sipping a cup of
-
strong truck stop coffee, this is your place for faith, fellowship,
-
and the good News. I'm Brandon and today we're kicking
-
off our study of the Gospel of Matthew. This book
-
is powerful. It's the first book of the New Testament
-
and ties everything from the Old Testament together to show
-
us that Jesus is the Messiah of the Promised King. Now,
-
Matthew starts out with something most people tend to skip over,
-
a genealogy and a long list of names. But don't
-
tune out just yet, because there's a whole lot of
-
truth packed intoday's verses. Then we'll talk about Joseph, an ordinary,
-
hard working man who found himself at the center of
-
the greatest story ever told. To grab your bible, just
-
listen along. Let's hit the road with Jesus. Let's look
-
at who was Matthew. Before we dive in this chapter,
-
let's talk about the man who wrote it. Matthew was
-
one of Jesus's disciples. Before that, he was a tax collector. Now,
-
tax collectors back in those days were not popular folks.
-
They worked for the Roman government, collecting taxes from their
-
own people, and they often took more than what was
-
owed to their line to line in their own pockets.
-
They were considered traders. But Jesus didn't see a greedy
-
tax collector in Matthew. He saw a man who needed grace,
-
a man who could be used for God's kingdom. When
-
Jesus called him, Matthew didn't hesitate. He left everything behind
-
and followed him. Now, right, there's a lesson for all
-
of us. It doesn't matter what our past looks like.
-
Jesus isn't looking for perfect people. He's looking for people
-
who are willing to follow him. All right, let's get
-
into the first part of Matthew one, the genealogy of Jesus.
-
I know, I know. When we see along with the names,
-
our first thought is, let's skip ahead. There's a reason
-
Matthew starts here. He's proving that Jesus is the rightful king,
-
the fulfillment of God's promises to Abraham and David. Matthew
-
one one, says the book of Genealogy of Jesus Christ
-
the Son of David, the Son of Abraham. It's one
-
verse that's the whole stage. God made a covenant with Abraham,
-
promising that through his descendants all nations would be blessed
-
as Genesis twelve three. He made another covenant with King David,
-
promising that his throne would last forever in Tewod Samuel
-
seven sixteen, and Jesus is the fulfillment of both of
-
these promises. But here's where it gets interesting. This genealogy
-
isn't just a list of kings and heroes. Includes people
-
with messy pass sinners, and even some folks at society
-
would expect to be in the family line of the Messiah.
-
A few of those names is Tomorrow. She was part
-
of the bescandal, yet God still used her story and Rahab,
-
a former prostitute who helped the Israelites take Jericho. Ruth
-
a Moabike woman not even an Israelite, and she became
-
the great grandmother of King David Bshiba. Her story is
-
tied to David's great sin, yet her son Solomon became
-
one of Israel's greatest kings. This shows us something huge.
-
God's grace is bigger than our past. If he can
-
use people like this in his divine plan, he can
-
use you in me too. Now we get to the
-
second half of the chapter where we meet Joseph. Matthew
-
one eighteen through nineteen says, now, the birth of Jesus
-
Christ took place in this way when his mother, Mary
-
had been betrothed to Joseph before they came together, she
-
was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit,
-
and her husband, Joseph, being a just man and unwilling
-
to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
-
Let's pause right there. Joseph was engaged in Mary, and
-
back then an engagement was legally binding, almost as serious
-
as marriage itself. So when he finds out Mary's pregnant,
-
he assumes she's been unfaithful. I put yourself in Joseph's
-
boots for a minute. He's a good man, he's doing
-
everything right, and suddenly his world gets turned upside down.
-
He has every right under Jewish law to expose Mary
-
and have her punished but what does he do? It
-
says he was a just man. He didn't want to
-
disgrace her. He was going to divorce her quietly, which
-
shows us his character. But then an angel appears to
-
him in a dream and says, Joseph, son of David,
-
do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for
-
that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
-
The angel tells him that married child is the fulfillment
-
of prophecy, the Messiah Emmanuel God with us, and Joseph
-
does something incredible. He obeys, no arguing, no delaying. He
-
takes Mary as his wife and raises Jesus as his
-
own son. So what lessons do we get from Joseph. Well,
-
for one, obedience matters even when God's plan doesn't make sense.
-
Obedience brings blessing, and faith requires trust. Joseph didn't get
-
all the answers, but he trusted God anyway, and sometimes
-
following God need to change the plans. Joseph's life didn't
-
go the way he expected, but it was so much better.
-
How many times have we had a plan for our
-
life only for God to take us in a completely
-
different direction. Maybe you thought you'd have a different career,
-
a different lifestyle, or a different path. God's wrote is
-
always better. So let's close in prayer. Lord, we thank
-
you for the word and for the story of Matthew one.
-
Just like you called Matthew, you call us to follow you,
-
just like you used them perfect people, you can use
-
us too, And just like Joseph, help us to trust
-
you even when the road ahead isn't clear. Keep us safe, Lord,
-
and guide us on this journey of faith in Jesus Name. Amen.
-
That wraps up today's episode of Trucker's Church. Next time
-
we'll dive into Matthew two and talk about the wise Man,
-
King Herod and how Jesus' early life fulfilled even more propsy.
-
If you enjoy this, share it with another driver or friend,
-
and remember, no matter how far you travel, you're never
-
too far from God's love. Stay safe out there, keep
-
it between the lines, and God bless.
