Hey, their drivers, Welcome back to Truckish Church, the rolling Sanctuary,
-
where the world rides right alongside you on every mile
-
of that long stretch of highway. I'm Brandon, and I'm
-
so glad you're here with me.
-
Today.
-
We've been driving through the Gospel of Matthew and we're
-
pulling over one of the most famous pit stops in
-
the whole Bible, the Sermon on the Mountain. This is
-
where Jesus sits down with his disciples and the crowds
-
gather around to listen. He opens his mouth and drops
-
some of the most radical, upside down truths ever spoken.
-
We're gonna cover chapters five and six today, so buckle up.
-
You might have heard parts of this in Sunday School.
-
The Beatitudes, you know, turn the other cheek the Lord's Prayer.
-
But today we're going to break it down like a
-
swabbing stories at a truck stop counter. So let's start
-
with Matthew five, one and two. Seeing the crowds, he
-
went up on the mountain, and when he sat down,
-
his disciples came to him, and he opened his mouth
-
and taught them. Then Jesus gives us the be attitudes,
-
the blessed. These flip the world's idea of success upside down.
-
Let's do a quick run through on these. Blessed are
-
the poor in spirit, those who know their spiritually empty.
-
Blessed are those who mourn, Folks who feel deep sorrow
-
over sin and brokenness. Blessed are the meek, the humble,
-
not the pussy. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst
-
for righteousness. People who crave with right. Blessed are the merciful,
-
those who forgive when it be easier to hold a grudge.
-
Blessed are the pure and heart folks with a clean
-
heart before God. Blessed are the peacemakers, the ones who
-
bring people together. Blessed are those who are persecuted for
-
righteousness sake, because sometimes living right will cost you. The
-
world says, get yours, look out for number one, climb
-
the ladder. But Jesus says, be humble and be merciful,
-
stay hungry for righteousness, and you'll be blessed in ways
-
the world can't touch. So we want to move on
-
to verses thirteen through sixteen, and Jesus says, you're the
-
salt of the earth. You're the light of the world.
-
Salt as flavor and preserves. Back in the day, salt
-
kept meat from rotting. Light cuts through darkness. You don't
-
light a lamp and hide it under a basket. Well,
-
you're a light of the truck stop. You're the salt
-
in your family. You're the one people know this when
-
you do right, keep your word, and show kindness. When
-
the world's gone sour, so shine be different, not weird,
-
but real. Let's look on and that Jesus fulfills the
-
law and verses seventeen through twenty he says, do I
-
think that I've come to abolish the law of the prophets.
-
I've not come to abolish soon, but to fulfill them.
-
At Pharesses thought righteousness was about rules and appearances, Jesus says, no,
-
what all the rules pointed to? He takes the law
-
deeper to the heart Matthew five, verse twenty one through
-
forty eight. Jesus now impacts how the law applies to
-
real life, and he's going to talk about anger. He says,
-
you've heard you shall not murder. But I say, if
-
you're angry and insulting your brother, you're already sinning. It's
-
not just about killing, it's about the poison in your heart,
-
and he talks about lust. He says, you've heard don't
-
commit adultery, But I say, if you look at someone
-
with lust, you're already committed it in your heart. He's
-
raising the bars. Not just the action, it's the intention.
-
And divorce. He calls out casual divorce and calls people
-
back to faithfulness and your oaths. Let your yes be
-
yes and your no be no. In other words, be
-
a person of your word. Retaliation turn the other cheek.
-
He's saying, don't be quick to get even, take the
-
higher road. Love your enemies. Love your enemies, and pray
-
for those who persecute you, like when someone cuts you off,
-
cheat you, or runs their mouth. Jesus calls us to
-
be different. That's Kingdom living. Now we going to go
-
on to chapter six, verse one through eighteen. Chapter six
-
kicks off with how Kingdom people handle giving, praying, and fasting.
-
Give secretly. Don't let your left hand know what your
-
right hand is doing. Don't do good deeds to get praise,
-
You do it out of your heart, serially, sincerely. Don't
-
pray to show off. Go into your room and pray
-
to your father. He sees you when you're praying alone,
-
You're not just doing it in front of people. Is
-
to show people how Christian you are or how godly
-
you are. Pray sincerely from your heart. And he taught
-
us the Lord's prayer. Here's how Jesus taught us to
-
pray our Father in heaven, how to be your name,
-
your kingdom. Come, You're will be done. Give us this
-
day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we
-
forgive those who have sinned against us, and lead us
-
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. This is
-
a model. It short, real, focused on God's will. Fast, humbly,
-
don't make a show of sacrifice. The Father sees in
-
secret nineteen through thirty four, Jesus says, do not lay
-
up yourselves treasures on earth, treasures in heaven. Where's your heart.
-
Money isn't bad in itself, but don't let it be
-
your master. Then, he says, therefore, I tell you, do
-
not be anxious about your life. He points to the
-
birds and the flowers, and they don't stress out, And
-
yet the Father takes care of them. How much more
-
will he take care of you? Seek first the kingdom
-
of God and his righteousness. All these things will be
-
added to you. Bills, breakdowns, fuel prices. They're real. But
-
worry doesn't drive you anywhere worth going. Trust that your
-
father knows what you need. He will take care of you.
-
So let's pray, Lord Jesus, thank you for your words
-
on the mountain. Thank you for flipping our world upside down,
-
teaching us to love our enemies and forgive quickly, give generously,
-
and trust you completely. Help us be salt in light
-
on these roads, in our homes, in our conversations, keep
-
our hearts pure, and our eyes on you in Jesus name. Amen. Well,
-
that's it for this episode of Trucker's journey through Matthew
-
five and six. It's the way the Kingdom. Not easy,
-
but worth it. Next time I'll tackle Matthew seven, where
