  1. Why is it important for you to set a goal?

  2. Because it's a spiritual responsibility. You're gonna go through life

  3. either by design or by default. You're either gonna set

  4. goals and you're gonna decide what's important for your life

  5. or other people are gonna decide it for you. If

  6. you don't have goals for your life, you are abdicating

  7. control of your life to somebody else and other things.

  8. If you don't have goals for your life, you're not living,

  9. you're just reacting. You're just existing. If you don't have

  10. clear goals for your life, you're just coasting through life.

  11. You are drifting through life. And whenever you're coasting, you're

  12. always going downhill. If you don't have goals for your life,

  13. you have already decided to let other people run your life.

  14. Because you don't know what's important, so you're gonna let

  15. them decide. And you react to circumstances and you go

  16. through your whole life wasting your life because you haven't

  17. clarified what's important. What I want to do today is

  18. explain to you why you must set goals for your life.

  19. And God says it. It's very clear in the Word

  20. of God. Why you must do it and the changes

  21. it will make in your life and the power that

  22. it will do. So this is all about the future.

  23. Making the best of the rest of your life. So

  24. I'm very excited about it. Now, I want to begin

  25. by giving you the six reasons why you need to

  26. learn how to set goals in your life. Number one,

  27. the Bible says that goal setting is a spiritual responsibility.

  28. Did you know that God sets goals? God has goals

  29. for the universe, God has goals for planet Earth, God

  30. has goals for history, God has goals for eternity, and

  31. God certainly has goals for your life. The Bible tells

  32. us that Jesus set goals In fact, he often announced

  33. publicly what his next goal was. I'm gonna do this now.

  34. I'm gonna do this now. And I'm gonna do this now.

  35. He publicly would announce in advance what his goal was

  36. for the next phase of his ministry. Every person who

  37. walked with God in the Bible, you can find examples

  38. of being goal-directed. But let me just give you one example.

  39. The Apostle Paul. Philippians chapter three, it says this. I know...

  40. that I'm not yet what God wants me to be.

  41. Hang on. Anybody agree with that? I know that I'm

  42. not yet what God wants me to be. I haven't

  43. reached that goal, but I keep moving toward it to

  44. make it mine because Christ made me and saved me

  45. for this. Now, I know that I haven't reached my goal,

  46. but there is one thing I always do. forgetting the

  47. past and straining toward what is ahead, I keep my

  48. eyes focused on the goal so that I may one

  49. day win the prize that God has called me to

  50. receive through Christ in the life above. Now all of

  51. you who are spiritually mature should think this same way too.

  52. Paul was goal-oriented. He says, I haven't reached that goal.

  53. I haven't yet reached my goal. And my eyes are

  54. focused on the goal. This is a very important spiritual discipline.

  55. The Bible says to be spiritually mature. He says all

  56. of you who are spiritually mature should think the same way.

  57. I set my goal. I strive toward my goal. I

  58. move toward my goal. I keep my eyes focused on

  59. the goal. That's what Paul said. Probably the greatest Christian

  60. who ever lived next to Jesus himself. Number two. Goals

  61. are statements of faith. Goals are statements of faith. A

  62. lot of people think, well, goal, isn't that like a

  63. business thing? Isn't that like a secular thing? Isn't that

  64. like something athletes do? No, no, no, no. This is

  65. a spiritual habit that you need to develop. And goals

  66. are statements of faith. In other words, if you're a

  67. believer in Jesus Christ, when you set a goal, what

  68. you're saying is, I believe, that's faith, I believe that

  69. God wants me to accomplish such and such by such

  70. and such a time. That's a statement of faith. A

  71. goal is a statement of faith. This is what I

  72. believe God is going to do in my life. Goals

  73. aren't just a statement of faith. They stretch your faith.

  74. And the bigger your goal, the more your faith will

  75. be stretched, and that pleases God. The Bible says without faith,

  76. it is impossible to please God. So if you don't

  77. have any goal, you don't need any faith. And if

  78. you don't need any faith, the Bible says it's impossible

  79. to please God. In fact, in Romans 14, it says,

  80. whatsoever is not of faith is sin. So if I'm

  81. going through life without having to need any faith, if

  82. I don't have any goals, I don't need to take

  83. any risks. And if I don't take any risks, I

  84. don't need any faith. And if I don't have any faith,

  85. I am being unfaithful. You see how important it is

  86. for you to have a goal in every area of

  87. your life? Now, here's a goal-stretching verse. Ephesians chapter three,

  88. verse 20. God can do anything. Far more than you

  89. could ever imagine. I don't know, I can imagine some

  90. big things. Far more than you could ever imagine or

  91. guess or dare to request in your wildest dreams. I

  92. don't know about you, but I can imagine some pretty

  93. big things. I'm a pretty big dreamer. Nobody has ever

  94. accused me of being a small thinker. I've always had

  95. big dreams. And yet God says, Rick, you think of

  96. the greatest thing, of the greatest dream I could do

  97. in your life. And guess what? I can top that.

  98. I can beat that. I can do anything far more

  99. than you would ever imagine or guess or dare to

  100. request in your wildest dream. You let the size of

  101. God determine the size of my goals. Big God, big goal.

  102. Tiny God, tiny goal. No God, no goal. Let the

  103. size of God determine the size of your goal. I

  104. guess what I want to say to you as your pastor,

  105. as somebody who loves you, and I want the best

  106. for your life, and I want you to succeed in life,

  107. I dare you to dream great dreams. I dare you.

  108. Stop your puny little thinking. Stop being a little bitty box. Well,

  109. I'm too young or I'm too old or I'm not

  110. pretty enough or I'm not handsome enough or I'm a

  111. woman or I'm a guy or whatever. Stop all your

  112. arguments and start dreaming what God could do in your

  113. life if you would just trust him. To me, hell

  114. would be if God were to show me all I

  115. could have accomplished in my life if I just believed

  116. him a little bit more. That would be hell. We

  117. limit God by our unbelief. Now there are two common

  118. mistakes we make in goal setting. We set them too

  119. low and we try to accomplish them too quickly. I

  120. challenge you to dream big dreams for God and I

  121. challenge you to think bigger than you ever thought before

  122. so that you have to trust God. See, I live

  123. my life in such a way that I'm bound to

  124. fail unless God bails me out. I can't tell you

  125. how many times I've painted myself into a corner. Whenever

  126. I go, who does he think he is? I mean,

  127. look at what he's trying to do. Like one time

  128. we said, hey, let's be the first church in 2,000

  129. years to go to every nation. Nobody had ever done that.

  130. We did it. Why? Because we set a goal and

  131. God helped us. And I have spent my life dreaming

  132. great dreams. And it's amazing what God can do in

  133. your life if you will do that. And here's the

  134. cool thing. Dreaming doesn't cost anything. Doesn't cost you any money.

  135. Doesn't cost you a penny. You can dream great dreams.

  136. What do I dream about in my relationships? What do

  137. I dream about in my career? What do I dream

  138. about in my finances? What do I dream could happen

  139. in my relationship with God? How would I wanna look?

  140. How healthy would I wanna be? All these things. Dream

  141. great dreams. You see, we overestimate what we can do

  142. in a year, and we underestimate what you can do

  143. in 10. So instead of thinking puny little tiny goals

  144. and trying to accomplish them instantly, my challenge to you

  145. is get a big goal for your life and then

  146. spend the rest of your life going after it. I did.

  147. When I was 25 years old and I moved here,

  148. started this church with no member, no money, nobody, and

  149. I set a 40-year goal for this church. When I

  150. was 25, that seemed like an eternity. Goals are statements

  151. of faith. Now, if you don't have a date, a

  152. deadline on your goal, it's not a goal, it's just

  153. a dream. A dream is good, but you need both. Now,

  154. here's what the Bible says, Matthew 9, 29. According to

  155. your faith, it will be done to you. According to

  156. your faith, it will be done to you. God says,

  157. you get to choose how much I bless your life.

  158. how much I transform your life. Great faith will be

  159. great transformation. Nothing happens in your life till you start dreaming.

  160. God says you get to choose. According to your life,

  161. your faith, it will be done. Ask the question, will

  162. this require me to have faith? Is it such a

  163. big dream that I'm bound to fail unless God helps me?

  164. I'm really going out on a limb. Don't ever be

  165. afraid to go out on the limb that's where the

  166. fruit is fruit is not at the trunk you don't

  167. get the fruit by playing it safe it's out on

  168. the limb never be afraid to rock the boat if

  169. jesus is your captain Goals are statements of faith. Number three,

  170. goals focus my energy. Another one of the reasons why

  171. you need to set goals in every area of your

  172. life is they focus your energy. They keep you from

  173. wasting time, money, reputation, energy. They keep you focused. Selection

  174. is the name of the game. Focus is the key

  175. to an effective life. It's not these 50 things I

  176. dabble in. It's this one thing I do. And the

  177. more you focus your life, the more powerful, the more

  178. effective your life is gonna be. If you spread it

  179. out and diffuse your life over a whole bunch of

  180. different things, you'll make no impact at all. But if

  181. you focus your life, it's gonna be powerful, it's gonna

  182. be strong, and it will change the world. Light diffused

  183. has no power at all. But when you focus light,

  184. It has enormous power. It can actually start a fire.

  185. If you focus light even more, it becomes a laser,

  186. and a laser can cut through steel, and a laser

  187. can kill a cancer. I want you to live a

  188. laser life, a focused life. Goals focus my energy. Now,

  189. the world is full of distractions. Everybody agree with that?

  190. Everybody agree? There are a lot of things to distract you.

  191. You can spend your life, you can waste your life,

  192. or you can invest your life. And the greatest use

  193. of life is to invest in that which is gonna

  194. outlast it. Now you don't have time to do everything.

  195. You figured that one out already. You don't have time

  196. to do everything. Here's the good news. God doesn't expect

  197. you to do everything. Not everything's worth doing. And there

  198. are only a few things that are really worth doing.

  199. And the key to being effective in life as a

  200. woman of God, as a man of God, is to

  201. do what matters most and forget everything else. Goals. focus

  202. my life paul says this in first corinthians 9 26

  203. i do not run without a goal i fight like

  204. a boxer who is hitting something not just the air

  205. he said i'm not playing around here i'm not playing

  206. air guitar i'm not just pretending i'm boxing because when

  207. i when i box i fight to win When I

  208. run a race, I run to win. He said, I'm

  209. not just messing around here with my life. It's too important.

  210. I'm gonna do something with my life. I'm gonna win.

  211. I want my life to bring honor and glory to God.

  212. I don't run without a goal. Some of you are

  213. running without a goal. As a result, you're just running

  214. in circles. And you're caught up in the rat race.

  215. You don't wanna run the rat race. Because even if

  216. you win the rat race, you're still a rat. Number four,

  217. goals keep me going. They give me hope to keep moving.

  218. They give me hope to endure. They give me hope

  219. to persist. You've heard me say this many times. When

  220. you're going through hell, what do you do? You keep going.

  221. You don't want to make a home in hell. You

  222. don't want to stay there and camp out overnight. When

  223. you're going through hell, you just keep on going. And

  224. the way you do that is you have a goal beyond.

  225. The Bible says Jesus endured the cross because he looked

  226. forward to the goal and the glory that was set

  227. before him. He looked beyond the pain to the payoff.

  228. You need to do this too. The Bible says that

  229. God wants to make you have hope. You see, if

  230. you don't have hope, a goal in your life, any

  231. goals in your life, you don't really have any reason

  232. to get out of bed in the morning. Except maybe

  233. you gotta eat. But really, why even get out of bed?

  234. Why even live if you don't have any goal for

  235. your life? Job says this in Job chapter six verse 11.

  236. I do not have the strength to endure. You ever

  237. felt like that? I don't know if I'm gonna make it.

  238. I don't have the strength to endure, why? I do

  239. not have a goal that encourages me to carry on.

  240. You gotta have a goal to keep you going. You see,

  241. when you have a long-term goal, long-term goals keep you

  242. from being discouraged with short-term setbacks. Everybody has setbacks. Everybody

  243. blows it. Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody has failure. In fact,

  244. failure is the only way you succeed. You cannot succeed

  245. in life without failing. Why? That's how you learn what

  246. works and what doesn't work. So never call it a failure.

  247. Call it an education. Some of us are highly educated.

  248. We're good at failing. Now, if there's any piece of

  249. advice as your friend, I could say this to you.

  250. It's this. Learn to fail fast. Okay? Because you're going

  251. to fail. You're going to fail. So everybody fails. I

  252. fail all the time. You know what? The key to

  253. Saddleback's growth and our strength and our Our success is

  254. we fail fast. And then we learn from it. A

  255. goal doesn't have to be big to motivate you. For instance,

  256. if you had to go to the hospital and have

  257. surgery for some reason, your first goal would simply be

  258. after surgery, can I sit up in bed? Not a

  259. very big goal, but an important one. And the second

  260. goal would, can I hang my feet over the side

  261. of the bed and sit up? And then the next

  262. goal would, can I get enough strength to stand up

  263. after surgery? And then a very important goal, can I

  264. have enough strength to go to the bathroom by myself?

  265. Big goal. Then the next is, do I have enough

  266. strength to walk around this wing of the hospital? All

  267. of those are very small goals, but they're all important

  268. goals because to get from here to success isn't one

  269. big leap. It's many small steps. Many small steps. So

  270. a goal doesn't have to be big for it to

  271. be important. It's getting you on the way. Like my

  272. goal today is to get out of bed and to

  273. eat healthy, have a healthy breakfast. Fine, that's a good goal.

  274. Goal setting is a spiritual responsibility. It's a statement of faith.

  275. It focuses my energy. It keeps me going. Number five,

  276. the Bible says goals build my character. Goals build my character.

  277. Drifting doesn't build your character, but goals build your character.

  278. And if you set a goal and you get a vision,

  279. without a vision, the Bible says the people perish. If

  280. you get a vision, you get a goal, then God says,

  281. I can work in you. Now, listen very carefully to

  282. what I'm about to say. The greatest benefit to your

  283. life over the goals you're gonna set, the biggest benefit

  284. to your life is not gonna be the accomplishments and

  285. achievements you acquire because of those goals, but what happens

  286. inside you while you're moving toward the goal. See, God

  287. is more interested in your character than he is in

  288. your accomplishments. You're not taking your success to heaven. You're

  289. not taking your career to heaven, but you are taking

  290. your character So God is more interested in who you

  291. are and what you become than he is in what

  292. you do and accomplish and what you succeed at. God's

  293. interested in you. So here's the idea. While I'm working

  294. on the goal, God is working on me. Does that

  295. make sense? And that's what God wants to do in

  296. your life. Goals help build your character. And that's what's

  297. gonna last for eternity. That's why Paul says in Philippians

  298. chapter three, verse 12, I keep striving toward the goal.

  299. That means it takes energy. It takes effort. It takes intention.

  300. It takes purpose in order to reach your goal. And

  301. God says that while you're doing that, while you're working

  302. on the goal, God is building character in you. You

  303. will never become the man God intends you to be

  304. unless you intend to become that man. You will never

  305. be the woman God intends for you to be unless

  306. you intend to be that person. 10 years from today,

  307. some of you, you're not gonna be in church. You're

  308. gonna be a long way away from God. You're gonna

  309. go through a failed marriage. You're gonna have all kinds

  310. of problems in your life. Why? Because you never intended

  311. to be a man of God. You never intended to

  312. be a woman of God. It was just kind of

  313. a casual Christianity. Yeah, maybe this, yeah, maybe that. And

  314. you never intended. You'll never become what God intends without

  315. you being intentional. Goals build my character. Then number six,

  316. good goals will be rewarded. Good goals will be rewarded.

  317. And if you have good goals, then there's gonna be

  318. two reasons that you're rewarded. You're gonna be rewarded on

  319. earth by people and you're gonna be rewarded by God

  320. in heaven. When you have a good goal, it brings respect.

  321. When you have a good goal, it brings honor. When

  322. you give your life to a good goal, it builds

  323. a legacy on earth. The Bible says in Proverbs 11, 27,

  324. let's read this verse aloud together, okay? Read it with me.

  325. If your goals are good, you will be respected. You

  326. wanna be respected? then you need to set some goals

  327. that are good. One of the greatest honors I've ever

  328. been given in my entire life was the honor of

  329. preaching in Martin Luther King's home church on the 40th

  330. anniversary of his death. And so on the 40th anniversary

  331. of Martin Luther King's death, on that day, they invited

  332. me to speak At Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, I

  333. was the first white preacher to preach in that church.

  334. And that was an honor to me. Why? Because I

  335. respect people who use their lives to make a difference.

  336. God wants to teach you how to love. If your

  337. goals are good, you'll be respected. But the real reward

  338. in setting good goals is going to come in eternity.

  339. Look at this next verse, 1 Corinthians 9.25. All athletes

  340. practice strict self-control. They eat right, they sleep right, and

  341. they work out, they exercise. They do it to win

  342. a prize that will fade away. Nobody's gonna remember yesterday's

  343. game in two weeks, much less two years. They do

  344. it to win a prize that will fade away, but

  345. we do it for an eternal prize. So I run,

  346. Paul says, straight to the goal with purpose. in every step.

  347. He was purpose driven goal setter. You need to be

  348. that too. Now, not every goal that you can set

  349. is a good goal. Not every goal is a goal

  350. that God's gonna bless. So you wanna set the kind

  351. of goal that God is gonna bless, God's gonna give

  352. you the power to do. So how do I know

  353. the kind of goal that God will bless? Let me

  354. just close by giving you three questions. When you get

  355. ready to set a goal, you wanna ask these three questions.

  356. Number one, the first question is, will this goal honor God?

  357. That's the first question you ask. Will this goal honor God?

  358. And what kind of goal will honor God? What kind

  359. of goal brings glory to God? Any goal that causes

  360. you to trust him more, to depend on him more,

  361. to love him more, to love other people more, to

  362. serve God and serve others, to be more unselfish. Those

  363. are gonna be good goals. The Bible says in 1

  364. Corinthians 6, 20, God paid a great price for you.

  365. Look at the cross. So use your body to honor God.

  366. Are you using your body to honor God? Corinthians 10, 31.

  367. When you eat or drink or do anything, Always do

  368. it to honor God. Everything can be done to honor God.

  369. You can take out the garbage to honor God. You

  370. can wash dishes to honor God. You can clean out

  371. your car to honor God or your closet. You can

  372. study it for a test to honor God. How? By

  373. doing it with the right motive out of gratitude and

  374. for the right motivation, I want my life to bring

  375. honor to God so I'm gonna be the best I

  376. can be for God's sake. Will this goal honor God? Now,

  377. the Bible says this. We make it our goal to

  378. please him, 2 Corinthians 5.9. Second question. Will this goal

  379. or is this goal motivated by love? That's the second

  380. thing you want to ask when you set a goal

  381. for your finances, for your health, for your relationships. Will

  382. this goal, is this goal motivated by love? God is

  383. not gonna bless a goal motivated by greed. I didn't

  384. wanna make a whole lot of money. God is not

  385. gonna bless a goal motivated by competition. I wanna be

  386. better than that company. God is not gonna bless a

  387. goal motivated by envy. God is not gonna bless a

  388. goal motivated by greed or grief or guilt or grudges.

  389. He's not gonna honor a goal that's built on worry

  390. or fear or anxiety. God is not going to bless

  391. a goal that's motivated by materialism or by ego or

  392. by pride. But when you set a goal out of love, God,

  393. I want to do this because I love you and

  394. I want to love other people. God's going to honor

  395. that because it's all about love. Life is all about

  396. learning how to love. 1 Corinthians 16, 14. Everything you

  397. do must be done with love. Everything. 1 Corinthians 14, 1.

  398. Love must be your highest goal. That should be the

  399. number one goal in your life. I wanna learn to

  400. really love. And I wanna learn to love unlovely people.

  401. And I wanna learn to love the loveless and the unloved.

  402. And I wanna learn to love people who are hard

  403. to love. That's being like God. Why is it important

  404. for you to have goals that are based on love?

  405. Because if you set loveless goals, you're gonna treat people

  406. as projects. You're going to run all over them to

  407. get to your goal. You're going to run over your marriage.

  408. You're going to run over your friends. You're going to

  409. run over other people climbing up the ladder of success.

  410. God says, no, no, you got it all wrong. It's

  411. not about accomplishments. It's about relationships. It's about learning how

  412. to love. Third thing, third question. Will this goal require

  413. depending on God? Will this goal require depending on God?

  414. Remember I said earlier, Hebrews 11, six, without faith, it's

  415. impossible to please God. If you don't have a goal

  416. that requires faith, then it's not a pleasing to God goal.

  417. Romans 14, 23, everything that doesn't come from faith is sin.

  418. If you have a goal that's so small, it doesn't

  419. require any faith to do it, it's a sin. Whatever

  420. is not a faith, the Bible says, is sin. Now

  421. look at this verse, Proverbs 16, verse nine. Why don't

  422. we read this one aloud too? You do it with me,

  423. Proverbs 16, nine. We plan the way we want to live,

  424. but only God makes us able to live it. I

  425. love that in the message paraphrase. We get to plan

  426. the way we want to live, but it says only

  427. God gives us the power, gives us the energy, gives

  428. us the ability to actually do it, to make the transformation. Why?

  429. Because God provides the three things you must have to

  430. reach your goal. Number one, I need God's spirit to

  431. empower me. This is not something based on willpower. It's

  432. based on God power. It's not based on trying. It's

  433. based on trusting. I need God's spirit to empower me.

  434. Zechariah 4, 6 says, you will succeed. You will not succeed,

  435. it says. You will not succeed by your own strength

  436. or your own power. but by my spirit, says the Lord.

  437. I need God's spirit to empower me to make changes

  438. I can't make on my own. Number two, I need

  439. God's word to guide me. I need God's spirit to

  440. empower me. I need God's word to guide me. The

  441. Bible is the owner's manual for life. The more you

  442. get this book into your mind, your heart, and your life,

  443. the more you read it, study it, memorize it, meditate

  444. on it, the more successful, the more fulfilled, the more

  445. strong you're going to be in life. When Joshua was

  446. given the great dream of taking over the promised land,

  447. and it was a goal that was going to take

  448. him the rest of his life, God had these words

  449. to say to Joshua. Chapter 1, verse 8. Keep this book,

    Joshua 1:8

  450. that's the Bible, keep this book of the law on

  451. your lips. In other words, talk about it all the time.

  452. Recite it by day and night. That means memorize it

  453. so you can quote it. Recite it by day and

  454. night that you may carefully follow all that is written

  455. in it. That's the premise. Now here's the promise. Then

  456. you will successfully attain your goal. That is one of

  457. the greatest promises of success in the Bible. That promise

  458. comes from God. You will successfully attain your goal. How?

  459. If you become a man of the word, you become

  460. a woman of the word. All you need to know

  461. about life is in this book right here. I need

  462. God's spirit to empower me and I need God's word

  463. to guide me. And finally, the third thing I need

  464. is I need God's people to support me. You will

  465. not be able to reach your goals on your own.

  466. I haven't been able to reach my goals on my own.

  467. You need other people in your life. A crowd can't

  468. support you, but a small group can. Three, four, five,

  469. six other people. They can know when you're sick. They

  470. can know when you're having a tough time, when you've

  471. had a bad day. A crowd can't support you, but

  472. a community, a small group can. Ecclesiastes 4.12 says this.

  473. By yourself, you're unprotected. But with a friend, you confess.

  474. the worst and a group of three a group of

  475. three is even better because a rope braided with three

  476. strands is not easily snapped what do you call three

  477. people meeting together a small group that's what it is

  478. Jesus said where two or three are gathered in my

  479. name I'll be in the midst of them.
