  1. Welcome to the Illuminate Church podcast.

  2. We hope today's message is encouraging to you.

  3. Welcome to Illuminate Church. My name is Tim.

  4. We help people find abundant life in Jesus.

  5. If you went to life Step 1 during the 9:00 AM service,

  6. welcome to the 11:00. We're glad you're here.

  7. If you're watching online wherever you are, I don't know

  8. which camera to look all of them.

  9. We're so glad you're joining us. If you live locally, get here.

  10. It's better in person in Jesus name Amen.

  11. So case in point that we help people find abundant life in

  12. Jesus is this series for I have seen I am witness to countless

  13. of people applying the teaching of today and it absolutely

  14. empowering their life in an abundant way.

  15. If you will take hold of it. I am myself, our family.

  16. A testimony of its effectiveness.

  17. The Bible says wisdom is proved right by all its children.

  18. Meaning if you do it, you will see the evidence.

  19. The proof is not in the pudding. The proof is in the eating of

  20. the pudding. You got to do it to see it.

  21. Amen. We're talking about unrest.

  22. Everyone say unrest in America. We need to unlearn the way that

  23. we've learned to rest because, news flash, our rest ain't

  24. working. Yes, Sir, the way that we as

  25. Americans rest, and even if you're from another country,

  26. you're here in America today, the way that we rest in America

  27. is not working because we're anxious, we're depressed, we're

  28. stressed out, we're burnt out. Even though we think that we

  29. rest, we need to unlearn the way that we rest and learn God's

  30. way. It's what we introduced last

  31. week by introducing or maybe reintroducing the Sabbath.

  32. Everyone say Sabbath. Last week we said that Sabbath

  33. is the last thing that God created, but the first thing

  34. that he made holy. Last week we said that the

  35. Sabbath is not about recuperation, it's about

  36. appreciation, Completely different things.

  37. Last week we said that the Sabbath kills aloneness and the

  38. Sabbath will make you still rested.

  39. I used the word Sabbath so much last week, I don't think I ever

  40. defined what a Sabbath actually is.

  41. So for a working definition and for unity here in the mezzanine

  42. everywhere around the world, here's what a Sabbath means.

  43. A Sabbath is 124 hour period you set aside each week to rest from

  44. your catch this normal work, your job, work, work that takes

  45. life out of you and you focus on the person of God, the goodness

  46. of God in your life, the goodness of who he is and the

  47. goodness of what he's done for you.

  48. It's a day set aside to the Lord.

  49. He'd called it holy. Holy means set apart to him.

  50. So I don't want you to think of monasticism, being a monk,

  51. getting in your house. I mean, you can meditate, but

  52. you don't got to do the my Father can be your father at

  53. Domino's. You know what I'm talking about.

  54. Not that to Sabbath means to invest in your family.

  55. The Sabbath means to invest in yourself.

  56. When's the last time you did a little self-care?

  57. God cares about you. I think you'd be all right if

  58. you did a little self-care. It could be going to the beach

  59. on your Sabbath. It could be taking a nap that's

  60. regenerative. It could be working in your

  61. garden. Wait, wait, wait, wait.

  62. He said you can't do worry. He's like, no, it's normal work,

  63. not work that gives life. Jesus said that the Sabbath

  64. wasn't made for man Excuse me? Jesus said the Sabbath was made

  65. for man, not man for the Sabbath.

  66. Meaning the Sabbath is supposed to be that which gives man life.

  67. We don't add anything to the Sabbath.

  68. It gives to us when we practice it.

  69. So on the Sabbath you do things that give you life, not take

  70. them away. Some of you, gardening takes

  71. away life, and in fact, you take away life when you garden.

  72. And for some of you, it gives life.

  73. For some of you, playing golf gives life.

  74. And for most of us, myself included, sometimes you want to

  75. take a life while you're it's a stupid game, right?

  76. I play it. Maybe you want to crank up the

  77. worship. Whatever brings you life.

  78. That is the purpose of this 24 hours dedicated to the Lord that

  79. is born out of a gift of love God gives to us, and we return

  80. that love to Him by honoring Him and keeping the Sabbath holy to

  81. commune with God, to celebrate and appreciate life.

  82. Last week we started in Exodus 20.

  83. You don't need to turn there. If you want to start flipping,

  84. you could go to Deuteronomy chapter 30, which is the 5th

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  85. book in the Bible. If you need a Bible, raise your

  86. hand, Deuteronomy chapter 30 about.

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  87. But while you're going there, I just want to read the fourth

  88. commandment again, found in Exodus chapter 20 of the 10

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  89. commandments. Yeah, just raise your hand.

  90. We'll bring you a Bible. Even up in the mezzanine.

  91. We have Bibles in the mezzanine, Exodus chapter 20, God's command

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  92. to rest, found in the 10 commandments, the 4th

  93. commandment. Remember the Sabbath day by

  94. keeping it holy. Set apart six days.

  95. You shall labor and do all your work, your normal work.

  96. But the 7th day is a Sabbath day to the Lord your God, on which

  97. you must not do any work, neither you nor your son or

  98. daughter, your manservant, your maidservant, livestock, chickens

  99. and cows. No working, nor the foreigner

  100. within your gates. For in six days the Lord made

  101. the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.

  102. But on the 7th day He rested. Therefore, the Lord bless the

  103. Sabbath day and set it apart as holy One of the 10 commandments.

  104. We talked about this a lot last week.

  105. If you missed it, please go back and watch.

  106. But the purpose of me reciting it again today is to tell you

  107. that this is a command, not a suggestion.

  108. You know the difference, right? Well, you might want to try

  109. this, or you absolutely have to do this.

  110. A big difference. It's not a suggestion, it is a

  111. command. We talked about it a little bit

  112. last. I want to reinforce it.

  113. But when God speaks, it's for our benefit.

  114. His words, his commands are for our benefit.

  115. Our family had the opportunity to go to Costa Rica a few years

  116. ago. And there we went, rappelling

  117. and zip lining through the rainforest to Costa Rica.

  118. And you go and you, they put you in this little Hut and they put

  119. the harness on you. And there's like a pole there.

  120. And the guys like hanging off the pole like this is what we're

  121. going to do. And you're just getting there

  122. and you're kind of fidgeting with your harness.

  123. It feels weird. Your kids are like fidgeting

  124. around. You're, you're looking at

  125. everything. There's lots of things to look

  126. at. He's talking and they're like,

  127. all right, let's start. And you go walking down the path

  128. and you get to the end of the path and you stand on the edge

  129. of a Cliff that is 110 stories, 100 feet, 10 store, 100 feet

  130. down. I'm reliving into my spirit.

  131. It looks terrifying when you're at the top ten stories straight

  132. down. There's a giant waterfall here.

  133. You, you repel right next to it. You get all wet from the

  134. waterfall, right? The first person to go is Eli.

  135. Oh yeah. Yeah, I don't remember how old

  136. you were. You lay back then like 10, he

  137. says. Well, he was.

  138. They deemed him too small to repel.

  139. So they literally like you're first hooked him up to the rope

  140. and they went like this. Shoop just held him over the

  141. edge and he's sitting there like a little cannonball.

  142. And then he just, he just went down.

  143. He didn't touch the wall. They just dropped him.

  144. And so all he sees his little body go bye, bye.

  145. And then you get up to the edge and you feel like this little

  146. baby feels right now and your legs are shaking like this.

  147. And you're looking over the edge and they're like, lean back,

  148. hold the rope, right? And it's at this moment that you

  149. realize I should have paid more attention to the instructions

  150. because these were not suggestions.

  151. These were commands. Follow them and you will have a

  152. nice bouncy time down the wall, a little bit wet.

  153. You get to the end. Christine and I were like, we're

  154. laughing and crying. I'm not sure if I'm happy to be

  155. done or happy that it happened, right?

  156. That's how you feel. Or if you don't follow the

  157. instructions, you kind of just like body scrape the entire way

  158. down, heads banging, right? Or worse.

  159. They're not suggestions. They're commands meant to give

  160. us life. The Sabbath is a command meant

  161. to give us life. Amen.

  162. Deuteronomy 30. I told you to turn there.

  163. In the book of Deuteronomy, Joshua is taking over the

  164. leadership of God's people from Moses.

  165. Moses sinned while the people were heading from Egypt to the

  166. Promised land. And therefore God said, hey,

  167. Moses, you're going to go up on a mountain and see the promised

  168. land, but you're not actually going to go in.

  169. Joshua is going to take them in. And in Deuteronomy, especially

  170. here near the end, God is reminding Joshua and all the

  171. people, this is what I'm giving you, the commands of God, so

  172. that as you enter the promised land, you will live and honor

  173. me. And therefore all the other

  174. nations will see you are blessed and they will stream to me and

  175. they themselves will be blessed and nation after nation will

  176. follow Israel into the glory of God.

  177. That's the idea. Humanity, we messed it up a

  178. little bit, a lot bit. But Deuteronomy 30, listen to

  179. how the Lord characterizes this. This is God speaking to his

  180. people. Now verse 11, sorry.

  181. Deuteronomy chapter 30, verse 11.

    Deuteronomy 30:11

  182. Now what I, the Lord God and commanding you, the people today

  183. is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.

  184. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask who will ascend

  185. into heaven to get and proclaim it to us, so that we may obey

  186. it. Nor is it beyond the sea, so

  187. that you have to ask who will cross the sea to get it and

  188. proclaim it to us so that we may obey it.

  189. No, the word of God is very near you.

  190. It's in your mouth, it's in your heart, so you may obey it.

  191. See, I set before you today life and prosperity, or death and

  192. destruction, verse 16. For I command you today to love

  193. the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to Him, and to keep

  194. His commands, decrees, and laws. Then you will live and increase,

  195. and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you were

  196. entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and

  197. you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to

  198. other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you

  199. will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the

  200. land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess this day.

  201. I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you.

  202. Here he goes again. He's making the offer I have set

  203. before you. Life and death, blessings and

  204. curses. Underline these words in your

  205. Bible. Now choose life so that you and

  206. your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God.

  207. Listen to His voice and hold fast to Him, for the Lord is

  208. your life, and He will give you many years.

  209. And the land He swore to give to your father's Abraham, Isaac and

  210. Jacob. God is saying to His people,

  211. this concept is easy to understand.

  212. You do not need to be a Pope, a priest, a seminary graduate,

  213. APHDA pastor. Did all those begin with Pi?

  214. Hope so, because pastors just love that.

  215. I mean, that's awesome. You don't have to be any of that

  216. to understand what God is laying out here.

  217. And here's what he's laying out. You have a choice.

  218. Here's a choice, obey or not, and here's what's at stake.

  219. Life and death. You choose which path, which

  220. route you want to go. Here's another way to think of

  221. it. Today.

  222. I don't know how many of you still wear watches, but if I

  223. were to tell you to look at your watch, most of us would look at

  224. an empty wrist because our watch now lives in our pocket.

  225. But go ahead, it's 1148. Look at your watch.

  226. What do you see? Don't answer aloud.

  227. Just what do you see? Do you see numbers and digits in

  228. the hands of the clock moving? Do you see the the time?

  229. I think the better question of what I'm trying to drill down

  230. here is like, what do you perceive when you look at

  231. something that keeps time? A clock, a watch, a calendar

  232. even? Do you feel like this is the day

  233. the Lord has made our rejoice in it?

  234. What do you feel like? Oh my gosh, time is slipping

  235. away quickly. I got to get to the next thing

  236. the To Do List is screaming at Lee I this day is going to be

  237. over before I know it. I want to introduce to you 2

  238. watches. The first watch is the life

  239. watch and the second is the death watch.

  240. And just as the Lord has told us in Deuteronomy 30, you get to

  241. decide which one you wear. But I will tell you, you're

  242. already wearing one sitting here today, but you still get to

  243. decide today which one you'll wear.

  244. You can make a different choice if you'd like.

  245. The death watch is called chronos.

  246. Everyone say chronos. Chronos, this is a Greek word,

  247. it's in the Bible. I'll read it to you in a second,

  248. but it's where we get the word chronological or chronology.

  249. It's dates on a calendar. It's a period of time.

  250. It's hours, minutes, days, seconds, all those things.

  251. John chapter 5, verse six, one man there had been an invalid

    John 5 chapter mention

  252. for 38 years. When Jesus saw him lying there

  253. and realized that he had spent a long Chronos period of time

  254. measured time in this condition, he asked him, do you want to get

  255. well? 38 years of Chronos Cronos's

  256. time passing by, a span of time. I said it's just a second ago.

  257. It's time measured, time marching on, time running out.

  258. It's the feeling that parents get when they look at their kids

  259. and say you're growing up too fast and they want to just keep

  260. their kid as an 8 year old forever.

  261. Don't ever grow up. Please don't grow up.

  262. It's the feeling of, I don't know if you ever had this

  263. feeling. I get it a lot lately.

  264. You look in the mirror and you say I feel a lot younger than

  265. the guy staring back at me. Can I get a witness from all my

  266. friends of around my age? I don't look that old, do I?

  267. Because my beard really white, is it?

  268. No, it's not liars. Eventually it's Kronos that

  269. catches up to us and gives us this dread of the day that we

  270. will cease to live. Kronos, this threat, always that

  271. time is running out. This season's running out.

  272. I got to hurry on to the next thing.

  273. It's going too fast. Kronos.

  274. Kronos can be terrifying. It's certainly not restful.

  275. It's stressful. That's the death watch.

  276. The life watch is another Greek word found in the Bible.

  277. It's Kairos. Everyone say Kairos.

  278. Kairos is a moment or a series of moment.

  279. It's an experience or a series of experience.

  280. If you look in Mark chapter 1, it says the Kairos has come, the

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  281. Kingdom of God has come near repent and believe the good

  282. news. He's not saying it's eight O 4

  283. that time has arrived 8 O 4:00 PM He's saying this moment that

  284. we have been waiting for has finally arrived.

  285. The intersection of what God was doing in the history of the

  286. earth has collided in this Kairos, this moment.

  287. Mark chapter 13. But about that day or hour, no

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  288. one knows, not even the angels in heaven or the Son, but only

  289. the Father. Be on guard, be alert.

  290. You do not know when that Kairos will come.

  291. That moment Kairos literally translated biblically, means

  292. time as opportunity. When you look at your watch, do

  293. you think of that? Like, look at all the

  294. opportunity? It's valuing what's happening

  295. right here and right now. It's appreciating each scene and

  296. season of life, the good ones and the hard ones, the young

  297. ones and the old ones, the strong ones and the feeble ones.

  298. The, excuse me, the Kronos person would say, Oh my

  299. goodness, I only have X amount of days, years left to live, 45

  300. years. Would the Kairos person say

  301. then, wow, I still have 45 years left to live?

  302. No, because the Kairos person would say, I'm just living for

  303. what's happening right now. Now be careful here because you

  304. can think about poor planning and poor stewardship and I'm

  305. just living for the moment. That's not what I mean.

  306. God is a planner. You should be a planner.

  307. God is a steward. You should be a steward.

  308. You should think about what's ahead, but you shouldn't fret

  309. about what's ahead because I am receiving this moment as the

  310. divine appointed opportunity that God has given me and I'm

  311. going to live it right here, right now and that tomorrow

  312. worry about itself, right? But it only comes from a rested

  313. person, not a chrono stressed death watch person, a life watch

  314. person. Mark Buchanan wrote a book

  315. called The Rest of God and he teaches this concept in there

  316. The life watch, the death watch, Kronos and Kairos.

  317. And he says Kronos is time we waste and Kairos is time we

  318. cease. Which watch do you have on

  319. today? Whereas Kronos dreads that time

  320. is moving along, stresses us out, makes us seize up in

  321. seasons, Kairos is appreciating each moment as a divine gift

  322. from God. Sovereignly, God is growing us

  323. and moving us from one season to the next, and we should

  324. appreciate each season as He moves us through life.

  325. I have two dear friends and they've been married almost 40

  326. years. And in their discussions that

  327. you, you, I don't know if you all have this discussions, you

  328. that have been married long, but you look in the mirror and like,

  329. wow, we ain't what we used to be.

  330. Things are wobbling that didn't used to wobble.

  331. You know, things that didn't used to hurt, hurt.

  332. And what are these caverns on my face wrinkles.

  333. Look, we're getting old. And then they continue the

  334. conversation and this is what came out of it.

  335. One of the most beautiful things I've ever heard personally, they

  336. said to each other. But when we got married, wasn't

  337. that the goal? Let it sink in for a minute.

  338. When we were just young pups holding hands in front of God,

  339. in front of our our friends, and we said till death do us part.

  340. Wasn't that the goal that we would grow up, that we would

  341. age, that we would get Gray hair or no hair or whatever, Right.

  342. And this is to some it's sad, but to me it's beautiful.

  343. And I often say it to people who are I'm about to marry.

  344. I'm like, listen, the goal is that one day one of you ushers

  345. the other into the arms of the father.

  346. You will die married to one another.

  347. It's not somber. If you're living Kairos.

  348. Time is opportunity. It's horrifying and sad if

  349. you're in Kronos. We're running out of time.

  350. This is all we got. We listen.

  351. He's sovereign. We're trusting him.

  352. We're resting him. The goal is to grow old and one

  353. of us will die married to the other.

  354. That's the goal. That's Kairos.

  355. And you can apply this to many areas of your life.

  356. Neo in the movie The Matrix, which is also Luke Skywalker in

  357. Star Wars and Harry Potter and Harry Potter.

  358. It's the same story, just different scenes.

  359. Fight me. OK?

  360. It's the same story, is it not? Saviour.

  361. You're the saviour. It's Neo.

  362. No, it's Luke Skywalker. No, it's Harry Potter.

  363. OK. And they all have a OK actually,

  364. does Neo have Neo does? Anyway, who gets.

  365. I digress as often I do. Neo hears.

  366. His mentor Morpheus say all I'm offering you is the truth.

  367. What's the truth? Well, The Matrix, if you're not

  368. familiar with the movie, is about two realities.

  369. One's actually not a reality. It's a fake reality that's

  370. propped up by AI and computers and people behind the scene

  371. making a fake reality so that all the people live peacefully

  372. without knowing the real truth, that there's a massive war

  373. brewing between good and evil behind the scenes and so they

  374. live in this ignorance. Ignorance is bliss.

  375. Just go to work, make the money, come home, there's family,

  376. whatever, but there's this real war waging that is unseen.

  377. The reality is this unseen world that Neo now has an opportunity

  378. to live in this truth or go back to being ignorance.

  379. If you remember the movie, he offers him 2 pills, a blue pill

  380. and a red pill. The blue pill is stay in

  381. ignorance. It's the death watch.

  382. Stay right here in this false reality.

  383. For Americans, I can speak, it means basically live the rat

  384. race. That's our reality.

  385. You're born, you go to school, then a few things might happen,

  386. college, career, marriage, children, all of these

  387. opportunities. Then basically taxes and death.

  388. That's the schedule. Live according to the schedule

  389. and then rinse and repeat for generations.

  390. That's Kronos. It's a false reality.

  391. It's the blue pill. It's the death watch.

  392. Kairos is the red pill where revelation comes and we see time

  393. as opportunity, meaning that every moment is a redeemed gift

  394. from God. It can be if you take the red

  395. pill, put on the life watch, and every moment, every season is a

  396. divine interaction of what God has intended.

  397. If we put on the life watch, the question is how do we put it on?

  398. I wonder the same thing. I'll tell you this before I move

  399. on. Just another example.

  400. When Owen, our oldest son, who will turn 23 on May 14th, so in

  401. what, 10 days? Yeah, exactly.

  402. I'll tell them. I remember he he went to high

  403. school 720 days, four, 180 days of school year.

  404. I really only remember the first day.

  405. All the rest of them are a blur. Right.

  406. But the first day he gets up, he's so tiny back then had to

  407. hit his growth spurt yet, and he's going into this school of

  408. 2500 demons. I'm kidding, but as a parent,

  409. you're like clenching. I make him breakfast.

  410. It's early in the morning. It's dark outside.

  411. They go. They send high schoolers to

  412. school way too early in Osceola County.

  413. Amen. And he's sitting at the table

  414. eating, and I'm behind him. He's at the table.

  415. He doesn't know that I'm behind. And I'm just considering the

  416. moment. And I'm living in Kronos in this

  417. moment. I had the death watch on.

  418. I'm thinking it's happened too quickly that we're here.

  419. Before we know it, he'll be out the door.

  420. I'll be dropping them off in a dorm at some place under be

  421. unknown to us at this point. And he's about to enter into the

  422. school with all of these people, with all of the pressure of the

  423. academics. He's doing IB, he's a student

  424. athlete, and those are the easy things compared to the social

  425. pressure to perform and be somebody.

  426. And I'm standing behind him thinking, let's just go back to

  427. elementary school. Let's not let these things

  428. happen. I'm dreading them. 13 days from

  429. today, Owen will graduate from college.

  430. Yeah, Hallelujah. He's mad at this incredible

  431. woman. He's got this incredible career

  432. that's laid out in front of him, and everything is going great.

  433. And the life watch is on my wrist now.

  434. And instead of thinking, wow, he's going to get married,

  435. potentially. I don't know and move out of the

  436. house and be on his own and all this kind of things.

  437. Now there's this idea of just embracing everything that God is

  438. doing in his life as ordained from his hand and saying God,

  439. you are good. I'm glad for the season.

  440. I'm I'm not ruining the fact that he's going to move out

  441. again and and have his own family and all all these

  442. thoughts have been released from being death to now.

  443. God, these are gifts from you. I'm appreciating each season of

  444. life, even though it's still hard.

  445. The hardest thing ever is to drop your kid off at college.

  446. That's just what I believe. Maybe you have a different thing

  447. and you're going to tell me later, because you always do so

  448. anyway. But how do we pick the watch,

  449. the life watch on the regular? Here's what I'll tell you.

  450. Sabbath is the break that fixes you.

  451. Sabbath is the break that fixes you.

  452. The first time my younger brother broke his arm, it wasn't

  453. my fault, it was my older brother's fault.

  454. We were in El Paso, TX at my grandparents house.

  455. They lived in El Paso for 30 years.

  456. My dad was born and raised there.

  457. My mom went to college there and he was launching us off of his

  458. feet. He was on his back and launching

  459. us off his feet. It's fun game.

  460. We were doing it for a little bit and then one time he

  461. launched Fred super high. Fred comes down like this.

  462. And then when he rolled off his body, we saw an S Yeah, I went

  463. running. Couldn't handle it like that.

  464. Looks nasty. He's screaming.

  465. I ran. It's Matt's fault.

  466. The second time my younger brother broke his arm.

  467. Oh, wow. It was my fault.

  468. The same arm. Same arm.

  469. It was not even much more than a year later, we had moved from

  470. Texas to Germany and our house had a clothesline in the back

  471. with these two TS, metal TS. Can you see them and the

  472. clotheslines between them? Well, the the TN down here far

  473. from the house had a little tree that you could climb and grab on

  474. to the clothesline and swing if you're a big boy like me.

  475. Not my younger brother, who was probably 5 or 6 at the time.

  476. So he climbs the tree and he's hanging on to that.

  477. He's swinging. And I don't remember if he said

  478. help or I just thought I got to help him.

  479. But I went up and like grabbed his legs.

  480. So I'm in the tree holding his legs and his arms are holding

  481. the bar like this, right? It's not a good position to be.

  482. And he's like, let me go. I go, let you go.

  483. You get a fall. Well, he fell anyway because he

  484. couldn't hold on anymore. And then he went down into the

  485. tree roots and I looked down and there was the S again.

  486. He didn't laugh. So what did I do?

  487. I ran. I ran into the house.

  488. I walked in like Dad. Fred broke his arm.

  489. It might have been my fault. Same arm.

  490. So later, Fred and I had a bro moment, like, man, I'm sorry,

  491. sorry. Just trying to help.

  492. He's like, it's all right. I wasn't mad at you.

  493. The reason I was screaming is because I knew when I went in,

  494. they were going to have to set my arm again and pull on it

  495. until they had it right. And then they cast it because

  496. what's broken needs to be reset. The Sabbath is the break that

  497. fixes you. Like, I'm not questioning or

  498. putting up debate that in general, the American population

  499. is broken. We don't know how to rest.

  500. We live stressed. As I said last week, we're tired

  501. all day and then we don't sleep at night, frenetic from one

  502. thing to the next, never enough hours in the day.

  503. You name it all chronos things, death, watch things, but the

  504. Sabbath is the break that can fix us.

  505. Let me give you some science and I'm going to tell you this.

  506. Science always proves what God has already revealed.

  507. Eventually they get there like oh, and they don't make connect

  508. the dots, but I do like see God's been saying that this

  509. whole time. Let me give you some examples.

  510. In 2018, Americans took 17.4 vacation days on average, up all

  511. the way up from 17.2 in 2017. They consider this a large

  512. increase in unused vacation days, because 300 million * .2

  513. is a lot, I guess. However, this is a significant

  514. drop from the 20.3 average vacation days used between 1978

  515. and 2000. We've gone from 20.3 to 17.4 in

  516. a span of 18 years. In general, Americans don't use

  517. 29% of their vacation days. In 2018, 768 million vacation

  518. days went unused. What am I trying to tell you?

  519. Americans don't know how to take a break because the rat race

  520. says you can't take a break. You got to keep performing.

  521. Can't take time off. In the early 1900s, an article

  522. was written and the writer of the article coined the phrase or

  523. the term workaholic workaholism. Somebody addicted to their work,

  524. They work without stopping. They're just working and working

  525. and working. And here's the sad thing.

  526. He used a certain profession to base this whole conversation in.

  527. It wasn't doctors, firefighters, teachers, lawyers, stockbrokers.

  528. It was pastors, ministers. The first time the word

  529. workaholism was ever used was in reference to those in ministry.

  530. Think about this. If the ministers who should know

  531. the rest of God don't rest correctly, how will the people

  532. they lead know how to rest? So I'm trying to learn.

  533. I'm trying to teach so that we will be a household to rest.

  534. Here's the science. And I don't.

  535. I can't remember exactly how they did this test to know

  536. exactly what they said, but in essence, a four day vacation

  537. will last you 4 weeks. It'll keep your cortisol clean,

  538. your body regenerated. Whatever.

  539. They've done, the studies, they did, all these statistics and

  540. polls and whatever, and they came up with this idea that four

  541. days of vacation will last you 4 weeks.

  542. This is the science, right? The research which means in a

  543. year you will need 13 four day vacations to last you through

  544. the year. 13-4 day vacations if you work here to illuminate

  545. church. I do by declare, no, no I'm not

  546. 13-4 day vacations. 4 * 13 is 52.

  547. Essentially, the research is showing us that we need every

  548. year 52 vacation days in order to be rested.

  549. And we're using 17, which means that we're 35 days to the

  550. negative and how much our body, our minds and our spirit needs

  551. to rest. And we wonder why we're stressed

  552. out, burnt out, depressed and anxious.

  553. And you probably picked it up by now, this number that scientists

  554. found out that we need 52 days of rest.

  555. Tell me, how many Sabbaths are there each year?

  556. 52. Wow, 52 days of rest God is

  557. asking us to have, which is exactly what science says keeps

  558. you rested. Sabbath rests and resets the

  559. soul every week. Sabbath helps what's broken be

  560. put back in place. Can you imagine going on

  561. vacation already rested? How much different that would

  562. be? You know, when you go on

  563. vacation, it takes like two or three days to get into it.

  564. You're like detoxifying and letting things go.

  565. And then you're on the third day and you're like, I have to go

  566. back tomorrow and you, there's no resting.

  567. Yeah, people. Exactly.

  568. Silas just said you need a vacation from your vacation.

  569. We shouldn't feel like that when you finish your Sabbath.

  570. Our family Sabbaths from 5:00 PM Friday to 5:00 PM Saturday.

  571. When you finish your Sabbath, you get to the end and be like,

  572. that's OK, I'll be right back here next week.

  573. And really, that 24 hour Sabbath is the training wheels of faith.

  574. Meaning as we practice the Sabbath, we'll begin to learn to

  575. live from Sabbath. All the other six days from the

  576. Tetelestai. It is finished, the finished

  577. work of Jesus. We practice the Sabbath and then

  578. we live from the Sabbath the rest of the week.

  579. Let me tell you how much God loves you.

  580. He has commanded you to rest. He loves you so much that he

  581. says, I want you to set aside a day each week to remember to

  582. live that every moment is a gift from Him.

  583. You can respond like a toddler. Toddlers will run themselves

  584. around, resist sleeping until they just crash out.

  585. They're running around 1 moment, make a ton of noise, they're

  586. crying out, then all of a sudden they're just gone.

  587. Can I get a witness? We do that as as people, We run

  588. around, we run ourselves ragged until we collapse.

  589. Or you can respond to the Sabbath like an adult.

  590. This is what adults do. They wake up, they hit the alarm

  591. clock, they look at the clock and like, how long until I'm

  592. back in this bed? Can I just go right back to

  593. sleep? Which means that most adults

  594. rest by escapism. I don't want to face what I got

  595. to face. So let me just lay here in the

  596. bed. Toddler, run around till you

  597. collapse. Adult, escape, escape, escape.

  598. Or how about we respond to the Sabbath like an infant?

  599. A baby most of the time, but not all the time.

  600. I know there's exceptions. You can find a baby resting

  601. sweetly, taking a nap in the arms of a loved 1.

  602. So here's an image for Sabbath for you, your heavenly Father.

  603. Like this. Come here, climb on in.

  604. And he doesn't sing Rock a Bye Baby because that song is

  605. terrifying. Let me close with this.

  606. Our family met the Walker family in 2007, Denny and Beverly

  607. Walker. There's going to be a picture up

  608. here with their daughter, Andrea.

  609. I can promise you, this is a whale picture.

  610. Denny looks way better than that.

  611. Now. Beverly's always been as vibrant

  612. and beautiful as she is there. That is their daughter, Andrea.

  613. They have another daughter, Hannah, who'll be in the next

  614. picture that got a little older. Hannah in the back.

  615. When she grew up is when we met her.

  616. She used to babysit Owen and Audrey back in the day.

  617. OK, when we met Denny he was a an elder at the Crossing Church.

  618. That was in 2007. But on February 11th 1999 Andrea

  619. was in a car. She wasn't driving and another

  620. car came this way at a high rate of speed, struck the vehicle and

  621. she died instantly. Parents worst nightmare.

  622. Denny, when I met him, was an elder at the crossing, as I

  623. said, and he was one of those elders that when he spoke,

  624. everyone else kind of got quiet. He didn't say much and he kind

  625. of had a high voice. So when he talked, it wasn't

  626. loud and everyone just kind of quieted.

  627. He always had this deep wisdom to share and he counseled people

  628. and he led people and I saw them all over the church.

  629. And so I sat with him. Denny, I'm like, dude, your

  630. daughter died and here you are serving the Lord in such an

  631. incredible way. I would have been angry, been

  632. cursing God, I'm done with this all.

  633. I'm out and here you are like, it's just as amazing.

  634. And I'm like encouraging him, like I want to be like you when

  635. I grow up. And he said, Tim, you're only

  636. seeing the end of the journey. Said for two years, every day I

  637. contemplated suicide, hated God. He said, the only reason I'm

  638. alive is because I didn't have the courage to kill myself.

  639. The grief's so heavy, the brokenness that he felt.

  640. Denny's house. I've been there.

  641. He's got this chair. And it's like where he reads the

  642. Scriptures and it's this amazing looking chair.

  643. And you're like, yeah, that's a that's the kind of chair where

  644. you read the Bible in like it's just one of those chairs.

  645. And he says, one day I was in this chair and I read this verse

  646. two years after the accident. See if this sounds familiar.

  647. This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against

  648. you that I have set before you, Denny, life and death, blessings

  649. and curses. And then he said, this is the

  650. loudest the voice of God has ever been to me.

  651. It was like it boomed from heaven.

  652. It hasn't been that loud since or before.

  653. It was never like this. These 3 words now choose life.

  654. Denny is sitting in his chair recognizing that God had made

  655. him an offer and it was now up to him to choose what he would

  656. do, continue in this Kronos of death or to embrace what his

  657. life was now and live in this Kairos of life and choose life.

  658. Then he said for me, life was facing God, death was putting my

  659. back towards God. God hadn't turned.

  660. Denny had turned, and understandably so, right?

  661. And that day as he sat in his chair, he said I had to

  662. willfully choose to take the backside of me and turn it away

  663. from God and turn myself to God. And he found life again.

  664. Praise God. I'm wondering which way you're

  665. facing today. And I'll say this to you.

  666. This is how it connects to our series.

  667. Every time you Sabbath, you make a wilful decision that day to

  668. turn towards God. So no matter where you've been

  669. on Monday through Saturday or whatever, your Sabbath falls.

  670. You get this opportunity each week to reset and face the Lord

  671. and say here I am and he's like here I am.

  672. Good to see you have some things I want to share with you, some

  673. deposits I want to make in your life.

  674. And hopefully as you practice this one day a week, you begin

  675. to practice it every day of the week, turning towards him.

  676. I want to close by just reversing the words a little

  677. bit. The Bible says now choose life.

  678. And I just want to tell you today, choose life now.

  679. I want to say now, I don't mean later now, I mean now.

  680. Now God put an offer on the table.

  681. That's why he brought you here today to illuminate church or

  682. wherever you're watching from to say, will you make your decision

  683. now? And yes, there's hard things

  684. that happen, devastating things that happen, but you may be

  685. sitting with your back facing God and he's just saying, will

  686. you? Will you turn to me today, now,

  687. and at least once a week on the Sabbath, turn and face me and

  688. you'll find that I am facing you.

  689. Choose life now. Thanks for joining us today.

  690. We hope God is speaking to your heart through this message.
