  1. Thank you for listening to the river.

  2. Bend Church podcast Reverb in church exists to lead all people

  3. to know love and live New Life in Jesus Christ.

  4. We hope that you enjoy this message.

  5. We're going into a brand new series and here's what I know

  6. about this series already. It's for everybody sometimes.

  7. I'll tell you you like there's something for one person in the

  8. room or maybe for your wife today or in some of the ladies

  9. that like, I need something for my husband.

  10. You need to talk to him Joe. But here's what I'm going to

  11. tell you this series is for 100% of the people in the room today.

  12. And here's why every single person has a war going on in

  13. your mind and see some people are winning the war.

  14. I don't, I'm not saying everybody's losing some people

  15. know how to win the war but then there's Some of us and because

  16. there's debilitating anxiety, depression insecurities

  17. destructive thought, patterns, even Suicidal Thoughts in the

  18. deal. Is it's an, if it's not you, it

  19. may be somebody that you love. And so if you want to know why

  20. I'm so passionate about this, it's because so many people are

  21. losing the battle and God says this, you can win say this, I

  22. can win. Say it.

  23. Listen declarations are going to be a big part of this series

  24. because I believe it just is and changing and in fight and

  25. changing our mindsets and win. The war.

  26. Let me show you what Jesus says about his people here.

  27. He says, the thieves purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy, and

  28. in context, he's actually kind of referring to Satan.

  29. The enemy comes, and he wants to steal kill, and destroy, and do

  30. you know where he's succeeding in our world and in the church

  31. in the battlefields of our mind, stealing killing destroy taking

  32. things away. But what did Jesus say?

  33. He says, my purpose is to give them my people a rich and

  34. satisfying life. Do you?

  35. You know what that requires that.

  36. We also have a rich and healthy mind that we have a rich in

  37. healthy ability to fight and win the war that's in our mind.

  38. So you didn't know this up front.

  39. Jesus says you can win and he's giving you the tools to win.

  40. And so the cool thing about this today, when you walk out, you're

  41. going to have some tangible tools to go start winning the

  42. war in your mind. I'm not saying God is not a part

  43. of it. I'm not saying the holy spirit

  44. that you can do it without him. What I am saying is because he

  45. wants us to win, he's going to give us everything we need to.

  46. Walk out of here and go. I can have a healthier mind.

  47. I can win that battle that's going on in here and let me give

  48. you the transforming truth. That's going to kind of guide us

  49. through this entire series here in Christ.

  50. So if I am a follower of Jesus, if I change my thinking in

  51. Christ, I can change my life. Literally, and you go man.

  52. That sounds way too easy. Joe.

  53. It's seriously straight from scripture.

  54. Something I want to show you today.

  55. See many people, there's a disconnect.

  56. Do you know why we never get to the true new life change that

  57. God. God wants us to have us because

  58. we focus all the time on our Behavior changed.

  59. My behavior changed my behavior. If I can, hey, don't we want our

  60. kids to behave? Come on right now and River

  61. kids. I guarantee send me yells kids a

  62. little snot-nosed. I'm just kidding.

  63. Some of those kids are back there and River kids right now

  64. and somebody's having to say, hey don't eat that, don't do

  65. that. Change your behavior, you know,

  66. stop hitting him, stop doing that, and we love doing that.

  67. We love the kids are here, but I'm just saying, don't sometimes

  68. you just want your kids Behavior to change, right?

  69. But if you only focus on Behavior, guess what you miss

  70. that there's something deeper behind Behavior behind Three

  71. crazy behavior is a broken thought, pattern is a broken way

  72. of thinking and so here's what I'm saying in Jesus Christ, you

  73. change your thinking and your literally change your life,

  74. you'll be changed. All those things that God wants

  75. new life for you to him. We have a disconnect, though.

  76. We think it is just changing our Behavior, but truly loot

  77. life-changing Christ, new life. It's about a mindset change as

  78. well. And so this is it self-help

  79. theology. Change your thinking, change

  80. your life? You're like, man, I've heard

  81. that somewhere before. No, it's not my idea, it's not

  82. even a professional. Sling ideas, actually, God's

  83. idea, first people. So let me show you what he says

  84. here. Romans 12:2 us so, dear,

    Romans 12:2

  85. brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to

  86. God because of all he has done for you, let them be a living

  87. and holy sacrifice. The kind, he will find

  88. acceptable. So in the first piece of what

  89. we're looking at here, he says, I want you to give your life to

  90. God. I want you to give your life,

  91. AKA Surrender Your Life to Jesus.

  92. There are a lot of people in the room.

  93. You may not be there yet, that's okay.

  94. But there are several of us here and you came To a place where

  95. you said, you know what, I'm ready for Jesus, to surrender my

  96. life to him. I want him to be my boss.

  97. I want to receive him. I want to receive his new life

  98. that he has for me. And so this is that part of it.

  99. Give your life to God. But do you know why there's so

  100. many Christians that have given their life to God that are still

  101. not seeing New Life transformation?

  102. It's because of the next first. He says that this is truly the

  103. way we worship him. Look at verse 2 though.

  104. Don't copy the behavior and customs of the world.

  105. The old word is don't be conformed to the ways of the

  106. world, but let God transform you.

  107. Into a new person by changing the way you think, or Renewing?

  108. Your Mind then you will learn to know, God's will, which is good

  109. and pleasing, and perfect. See many people give their lives

  110. to Jesus, but then they get stuck.

  111. We get stuck. Why is that?

  112. It's because we leave out verse 2.

  113. Don't copy the behavior, and customs of the world, no copy

  114. that instead, change the way, you think, let God change you

  115. through that. You know, I find a lot of

  116. encouragement in this this morning.

  117. This was written 2,000 years ago, nearly Years ago, people

  118. were struggling with broken thought patterns and don't we

  119. know today with all the access and all the information we have

  120. even more ability to have broken thought patterns.

  121. So in 2023, we have thinking problems.

  122. There's an old country song. It says, I admit that I have a

  123. thinking problem. So y'all can't you people here

  124. you know and talk. Sometimes you just gotta get to

  125. the place to just say I admit it I have a thinking problem, I

  126. have a thinking from, you know, as soon as you get there though,

  127. you can start picking up the weapons that God has given you

  128. to fight this. War.

  129. Now here's the thing. I looked past couple of weeks,

  130. just reading over some statistics and a glance that

  131. mental illness stats. You know what?

  132. It tells us we're struggling one in five adults right now in the

  133. United States, experienced mental illness each year,

  134. somebody on your row. I mean I'm not saying we're

  135. stats. I know we all want to think not

  136. us, not in church but that means on every single Row in here.

  137. There's somebody wrestling with mental illness and there's no

  138. Stigma to that. One of the things I hope to do

  139. through this here is let's remove the stigma and get stigma

  140. and get healing. Let's go to the counseling,

  141. let's get involved in and pastoral counseling.

  142. Let's get ourselves in a place to get whole again, but that's

  143. crazy. When I look across the room, and

  144. if you're online today sitting at Oakwood, listen, somebody on

  145. your row, statistically at least, is wrestling one in 20

  146. people have serious mental illness.

  147. That means one person on every two rows in here is really

  148. wrestling to a point of danger overwhelmed with mental illness,

  149. fifty percent of the people in the United States.

  150. In their Lifestyles will be diagnosed with a mental illness

  151. or disorder. 90% of the people who commit suicide showed signs

  152. of mental illness, and I would argue that one hundred percent

  153. of them were in a place of mental unhealth, three-quarters

  154. of the those who committed suicide.

  155. Guess what we're men. So, I look around at the men in

  156. the room and I say, are we struggling that?

  157. That much? Can we remove the stigma you

  158. want to know, why your pastors passionate about this?

  159. I can't imagine one of you men whose God has called, who God

  160. has a call on your life, in a purpose for your life to get so

  161. low in broken in your mind that you feel You don't matter

  162. anymore. I can't imagine a mom in the

  163. room. I can't imagine a young adult in

  164. this room. I can't imagine a teenager or

  165. college student or grandparent getting to the point where they

  166. feel so low and so worthless and so attack they go, it's not

  167. worth being here anymore. So if I can just stand in the

  168. Gap as a pastor and say not on my watch, that's part of this

  169. whole series. Not on my watch.

  170. Looking at this suicide. As the 10th leading cause of

  171. death in the United States, every 100 minutes, a teenager

  172. dies from suicide. No, not to mention all the

  173. debilitating anxiety in the variety of other mental

  174. illnesses. And so this is just me saying

  175. again, not on our watch church. I've been praying about this for

  176. a long time since last year about the series.

  177. And so we will not stand by. I Can't Stand By and Watch the

  178. church and watch people that I love and Friends lose a war that

  179. God says, you can win because maybe a counselor told you,

  180. that's just how you are. You never get over it.

  181. Maybe a friend told you, that's just.

  182. Yes, this part of your personality, you'll never be

  183. able to win that work, as I just look at the Bible.

  184. Go but but didn't their new life in there.

  185. A holy spirit that raised Jesus from the dead that lives in us.

  186. That can change how we think, change?

  187. How we think, put us back on a healthy path, get some new

  188. mental processes going. So let me give you the starting

  189. point for winning today. Here it is.

  190. I put this in your notes for taking notes.

  191. If we really want to win, you have to start thinking about

  192. what you're thinking about. So many times, we just think,

  193. but we never think about what we're thinking about and I think

  194. that's what the Apostle Paul is getting out here.

  195. Let me show you. You what I mean?

  196. Look at this. Verse again, don't copy the

  197. behavior and customs of the world, but let God transform you

  198. into a new person. There's a couple of things to

  199. point out. Paul said, obviously our

  200. Behavior as followers of Jesus. Our behaviors should not look

  201. like those that don't follow. We should we should have hope

  202. and love and joy that comes only from Christ.

  203. Not to say there's not good people that don't follow Jesus.

  204. Not saying that this is really con people to do a lot of good

  205. things but it's there's a difference in being a Jesus

  206. follower and just being a person who does get on the He says, we

  207. should not copy the behavior and customs of the world, don't

  208. conform yourself to that. So he acknowledged the fact that

  209. we are tempted to conform our Behavior to other people, but he

  210. didn't say. So instead conform your behavior

  211. to the likeness of Jesus, what did he say?

  212. Let God transform you, let me point this out.

  213. The transformation were talking about, in our thought process,

  214. it cannot happen apart from the Holy Spirit and he said that

  215. again, it cannot happen apart from the Holy Spirit.

  216. That's why people try and try and try.

  217. But without the anointing And the spirit of God working.

  218. It's impossible to truly change into this person.

  219. God wants you to be, but God will transform you into a new

  220. person. How by changing the way that you

  221. think changing the way that you think see, do you know what

  222. behavior is behavior is the outward showing of how we think?

  223. Think about it with a child. Do you know why they're selfish?

  224. You know, why they still toys, you know, where they bite, your

  225. sip bite their siblings because in their mind, the thought

  226. process that's mine. I deserve it.

  227. It's my there's entitlement built into every one of the

  228. little rug rats. Both of mine that were raised as

  229. well. Every one of them, it's

  230. entitlement. The problem is some of us never

  231. grow out of that way of thinking.

  232. So you have like forty two-year-old entitled people,

  233. right? Still biting people spitting on

  234. people cussing at people? We just learned new words when

  235. we get older, right? But behavior is the outward

  236. showing of wrong thinking. See, here's the other piece of

  237. it. Changing your behavior doesn't

  238. transform. You, it usually just makes you

  239. frustrated. Now, I'm not saying that you

  240. shouldn't. If you see things about

  241. yourself, Behavior wise, you can make changes, but the Bible is

  242. actually really clear that just deciding by coming to church.

  243. You know what, I'm going to change how I'm acting.

  244. That's actually falls into the devil's trap of thinking.

  245. You gotta check boxes and do enough good to get to heaven.

  246. Owen see transformation comes how surrender to Jesus Christ in

  247. Christ. Then we can change our thinking

  248. and change our lives. We can bring he'll bring new

  249. life but you have to focus on our minds and our hearts and let

  250. God work there. If you ever want to truly be

  251. transformed from the inside, out that new life version of you.

  252. Now another way to translate this change the way you think an

  253. older version says, Renewing Your Mind and this is really

  254. interesting. Renewing Your Mind is a few

  255. things about it. I want to point out first, it's

  256. an ongoing process. SS.

  257. You cannot come to church. Today, listen to one.

  258. Message you go, I renewed my mind and now I'm good forever

  259. whenever Paul was preaching this to the church, the Apostle Paul

  260. he was saying, renew your mind, constantly constantly being

  261. God's work. Constantly look at, think about

  262. what you're thinking about constantly.

  263. Make sure that you got the right, thought process is going

  264. on in your head but also it not only means change the way you

  265. think. It means change the way that you

  266. perceive things in life. Change the lens that you view

  267. your life through whenever things happen in your life.

  268. Whenever thoughts come what lens?

  269. Are you viewing? Those sure.

  270. That's what it means. To renew your mind would be to

  271. take God's truth. His word and allow that to be

  272. the lens that you filter. I don't filter it through my

  273. feelings. I don't filter through what

  274. other people say, not first. I filter it through.

  275. God, what do you say? What is your spirit leading

  276. here? So, as you surrender to Christ,

  277. as Lord changing your thinking becomes a choice that is within

  278. your power, but here's another deal.

  279. Well, I got to point out, you will never defeat what you

  280. refuse to Define. There are some people that are

  281. in denial. I don't have a problem.

  282. I don't have an anger problem. Joe.

  283. It's just, it's just my wiring. I don't have a drinking problem.

  284. I just like, you know, I just like to get relaxed, you know, I

  285. don't have a drug problem, I've just got pain in my life.

  286. There's thing I'm not knocking when you have to use something,

  287. what I am saying, if you will never Define the problem, you

  288. will stay stuck in the pattern that you're in right now.

  289. The bit destructive Behavior cycle that's over and over.

  290. If you're unwilling to stop and Define it, why don't people do

  291. this? Why don't we stop?

  292. And Define the problems in our life is because it's painful,

  293. it's because it's painful. See many people walk around

  294. missing, God's best for our lives, living in the feet,

  295. simply because we're not picking up the tools.

  296. We won't diagnose the problem. Pick up the tools and start

  297. fighting How many have you drove here?

  298. Don't raise your hand with a check engine car, light on in

  299. your car. This one don't raise your hand.

  300. See when it comes on for most of us, what we do is we get a

  301. little picture of our family and slide it over that little area

  302. in the car and you just keep driving.

  303. You know what? Check engine light, baby, I'm

  304. good. But the thing is, when the check

  305. engine light comes on, guess what?

  306. There's a problem somewhere, it may be very minor at that point,

  307. but once the light comes on, if you go, hey, I needed.

  308. I didn't go get this thing plugged in maybe something

  309. really small plugged in. They can diagnose it and say,

  310. oh, you just need, you know, this small little part here

  311. that'll be seven thousand dollars.

  312. Here you go. Right, it's the same way in our

  313. lives. You know why we're doing this

  314. series? Because I think there's some men

  315. and women of God, her driving around with the check engine

  316. light on in their heart and in their mind and then their family

  317. and in their life and in their dorm room, the check engine

  318. light is on the check, thought life is, you know, light is on

  319. right now and you haven't slowed down to Define it.

  320. Why did, why is it this way? What's going on in my heart?

  321. Why do I feel this way? What what's happening?

  322. But as soon as you're willing to let the Holy Spirit, do the hard

  323. work of searching you and going wide at why is this true?

  324. Formation is right around the corner.

  325. I really believe transformation is right around the corner for

  326. people in the house today, but you gotta get your mind right?

  327. And so we invite the spirit of God today to search our hearts

  328. to search our mind so that he can bring change thinking and

  329. transformation. Listen, there's a war going on

  330. in our minds and this verse that Paul wrote.

  331. It's not just about the war in our minds, but I think it

  332. defines it because you did. You know that that mental

  333. unhealth and spiritual battle, actually go hand in hand because

  334. where does the enemy attack you? You, you could argue that.

  335. He may seem to throw things that you physically, but it's when

  336. you're laying in bed at night and your mind won't shut off and

  337. anxiety starts revving up and you either got to grab a drink

  338. or grab a pill or go smoke. Or you got to lay there and be

  339. miss. You gotta do something like all

  340. of that is just going on inside of your head right there.

  341. In that moment. Let me tell you what happens,

  342. the enemy capitalizes on that he comes along and he presses and

  343. says. That's right, you're not good

  344. enough. That's right.

  345. You should be scared. That's right.

  346. That you really are wrong in this situation, you really may

  347. lose everything and he starts putting He starts in your head

  348. and it just ramps up. But look what Paul says.

  349. It's just a reminder of what I think goes on.

  350. In our head, we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies.

  351. Wouldn't be great if we just put on the boxing gloves and just

  352. battle it out physically for our mind, I would love that like

  353. beat me up but like, I want to know I've been in the fight

  354. physically but the harder part is it's not flesh and blood.

  355. He said this against evil rulers and authorities, let me

  356. translate demons in the Heavenly Realms and the Unseen, well, we

  357. fight against Mighty powers in the dark world and against Evil

  358. spirits in Heavenly places. Doesn't that describe?

  359. A lot of the battle that goes on in our minds.

  360. And so this is us today, declaring war.

  361. If I were to say, one, two, three, four, I declare Thumb

  362. war. That's right.

  363. I know you got that Oakwood. I want to change it up a little

  364. bit today. One, two, three, four.

  365. I declare a thought War We're going to declare war on those

  366. Unholy thoughts for any kind of War on those debilitating

  367. anxiety, thoughts. We're going to declare war on

  368. the things that keep taking you back to the addiction that

  369. you're trying to get out of, we're going to declare war.

  370. You know why? We declare war because we are or

  371. but before we get to the weapons in the winning, I don't want to

  372. depress us but I do want to understand how do we get broken.

  373. What is it that gets us to the place where we can have metal in

  374. health because there's actually several common things that we

  375. all Wrestle with what causes mental Brokenness and the you

  376. the first one here. Starts.

  377. When your kid childhood influences, now, you can trace

  378. it back to the Garden of Eden and say, well, sexually sin.

  379. It's when we chose to do wrong against God.

  380. That's where you know, a curse was put over all creation,

  381. that's where people became Sinners.

  382. But there was somebody that raise you to be like, you are

  383. And even if you had amazing parents, guess what?

  384. They weren't. Perfect.

  385. And even if your parents are great, there's probably some

  386. other influence in your life that had a negative impact on

  387. the way. You think, listen, I had great

  388. parents, my mom and dad were amazing, love them to death.

  389. But you know what? There were older kids on my

  390. street and in my neighborhood, there were others in my circle

  391. of influence, even at church some and they spoke things over

  392. me. Like this, Joe, you'll never be

  393. enough. You'll never be big enough.

  394. You'll never be strong enough. Just Give up.

  395. I mean, just little thing and usually, you know, it was said

  396. as a joke, like, just kind of taking a jab at you a little

  397. bit, but you have no idea what that does to a little mind,

  398. because they had somebody's a little bit older.

  399. You got our just cutting up, we're just goofing.

  400. But as a kid you start taking that to heart and see.

  401. Here's what I know about me. I have a performer personality

  402. and so without Jesus, my natural tendency is if I do.

  403. Well, I feel like I'm worth something if I don't then I feel

  404. like I'm worth nothing. And so you pair all that

  405. together and you know what? You get you get a very Keep in

  406. mind, but you get somebody who's styling about it for years.

  407. But, you know, the question did have gone through my mind since

  408. I was literally, since I was a kid and this is painful to dig

  409. up because I've been going through it.

  410. So, for so long, the questions like this.

  411. Am I enough? Not till you guys course I am.

  412. I'm called by God, but I'm going to preach the word but it can I

  413. tell you the back story? My mind.

  414. Am I really enough? Am I good enough?

  415. Am I smart enough because I look around in the room.

  416. There's a lot of you guys are way smarter than I am.

  417. I just don't it. You're way smarter than me, you

  418. more educated than me and I look around.

  419. My God. Why do they want to listen to

  420. me? I'm not smart enough.

  421. I look at my wife many times and I go a, my husband enough.

  422. A my dad enough I look at my kids and my daughter-in-laws,

  423. and I go and my father-in-law enough and my dad enough.

  424. I look at the church as a whole and I go and my pastor enough

  425. and if you want to think that the enemy comes sometimes late

  426. at night and just start pounding on my yes it happens.

  427. See for much of me though, I've traced it back with the help of

  428. a good counselor and some mentors in my life.

  429. I trace it back to things that happened when I was a kid.

  430. You start thinking wrong, when your kids to listen There are

  431. many things in your life that you may not have defined it.

  432. And you're not defeating it because you didn't Define it,

  433. but it's things that happened to you as a kid.

  434. You've never actually said, you know what, that's not how God

  435. wants me to think, that's just how I was taught to think is

  436. again. So there may be one of the most

  437. freeing statements of holiday today.

  438. God wants to free you from how you were taught to think, and

  439. let you think like a child of God.

  440. Also another thing that can be biology, just the way you are.

  441. Some people may say, Hey, Joe, just the way I am, I just

  442. wrestle with anxiety, you know? There's some truth to that.

  443. There could be chemical imbalances.

  444. In our brains, and in our bodies, there can be hormonal

  445. changes that happen. We know this and listen, just

  446. because it's not happen to you, don't judge your neighbor, don't

  447. judge somebody else. They may be going through

  448. something you've never felt before.

  449. Stop judging, we're not here to judge.

  450. When it comes to what other people are feeling, but biology

  451. can play a part. See some people may be prone to

  452. be more mentally healthy than others.

  453. That's not fair. That's just called life.

  454. That's why we have to lift up people, but there are those

  455. prone to anxiety, depression and security, mental and help.

  456. Here's another thing that brings mental and health in our lives.

  457. Enos and what the Studies have shown is, especially prolonged

  458. illness. It can be you, or you could be

  459. caregiving for someone you love. And so, we have to lip up our

  460. lift, up our family, and friends, and neighbors during

  461. these times because it is really easy to get to a place where you

  462. feel like it'll never change. I'm never going to be better.

  463. I don't have any purpose anymore and then the enemy comes over

  464. and says you shouldn't even be here anymore.

  465. Why be here. Let me give you another calls of

  466. mental and health substance. I just put substance but

  467. especially substance abuse. Use of alcohol and drugs.

  468. Now, here's the crazy thing. Every time you feel like you're

  469. under attack or your minds and healthy got I mean there are

  470. these things that the enemy wants to say, why don't you just

  471. numb it out? Why don't you just drink a

  472. little too much that way. You'll just kind of forget about

  473. it. You won't feel it.

  474. You'll just feel Joy. I mean, just go smoke.

  475. I know you. I know it's bad for you.

  476. I know you probably want your kids doing that but just go do

  477. it anyway, man. Because like, you know, that you

  478. can't you can't handle life without it.

  479. So just go every time you feel that way, just go smoke.

  480. Now here's what the research shows though, the things that we

  481. use to numb the pain or actually like And fertilizer on the

  482. problem. This is where addictions come

  483. from many times mental Brokenness, you try to numb it.

  484. And then next time, guess what? It takes more to nominate and

  485. then it takes more to numb until you're at a point where you feel

  486. so low. There's no help.

  487. This is where Jesus comes in, he can lift you out, he can bring

  488. you out of that. He can help you get a new

  489. thought pattern going in your life.

  490. Here's another cause of mental and he'll trauma.

  491. I don't know everybody's story, but I guarantee there's people

  492. in the room and you have something in your past.

  493. That was That it could even be PTSD at this point that you've

  494. walked through or still walking through right now.

  495. It's very real. But it's not just about one big

  496. event trauma that happens. Did you know that it's been

  497. proven? Trauma can also be repeated

  498. abuse, you can even call it. Small abuse repeated, small,

  499. abusive. You were beaten down verbally

  500. for a long, long, long time. It's this, it equals the same

  501. thing in your brain as one big traumatic experience.

  502. It just leaves you to this place where all of a sudden intrusive

  503. thoughts would just come over you and you'll feel worthless or

  504. afraid or fearful and it literally trauma literally can

  505. break your brain. But here's the good news,

  506. remember you can win. There's no trauma that can break

  507. you so badly that you can't find healing in Jesus.

  508. Here's the last one. I'll talk about.

  509. And again, there could be a long list.

  510. I just wanted to kind of unpack these and say, hey, let's remove

  511. the stigma and just say, everybody in the room is

  512. impacted by some of these but the last one is self-inflicted

  513. wounds. Whoo.

  514. Like, I felt that one deep because I was like, how many

  515. times have I made decisions that hurt myself and hurt my own

  516. mind, how many times has my own sin hurt me?

  517. So I want you to look one more time.

  518. We're going to get this verse today.

  519. What Paul says don't do like everyone else does.

  520. Don't just try to behave like everybody else.

  521. Don't copy the customs and behaviors of the world, but let

  522. God transform you into a new person by changing the way you

  523. think. So we're going to walk through

  524. this idea over the next few weeks, but I want to introduce

  525. you, to the whole process. The Lord's really put on my

  526. heart. The first step to changing the

  527. way you think is thinking about what you think about that.

  528. What we've said so far, but winning the war.

  529. In your mind is this you have to evaluate your thoughts and

  530. behaviors. Paul said, don't copy the

  531. behaviors. So you have to not only think

  532. about your thought life, but where is a broken behavior in

  533. your life that you know, you need to change once you identify

  534. the broken Behavior? Here's what you'll find, there's

  535. a thought process somewhere behind that.

  536. And so, where is God calling you hire your warning to transform

  537. you? We have to take time to evaluate

  538. and again, do you know why we don't evaluate?

  539. Because it's painful. Because it's painful evaluate

  540. take time to ask questions, you have to work on yourself and not

  541. just in the middle of the battle.

  542. Look what Paul says in 2nd Corinthians.

  543. He said we destroy our arguments and every lofty opinion raised

  544. against the knowledge of God and we do what take every thought,

  545. captive, there's a war sentence for you.

  546. It wore in my mind, I'm gonna take every thought, captive.

  547. And I'm going to make my thoughts obedient to Christ.

  548. You know what, the flip side of this.

  549. I'm not going to let my thoughts rule my life.

  550. I'm going to make my thoughts obedience to Christ.

  551. Christ and my feelings obedient to Christ.

  552. So how do you evaluate yourself? Let me give you some questions

  553. and by the way, we're going to put these questions out.

  554. I didn't have them in the notes are on here today, but over the

  555. next few days, we're going to put out a guy that has these

  556. questions for you and so if you can't get them all written down,

  557. that's okay. But we're gonna get them to you

  558. both to Gainesville Oakwood. We're going to get this out to

  559. you. What repetitive destructive

  560. thoughts. Do you have?

  561. Think about that for a minute? When you're sitting there out of

  562. nowhere, what repetitive thought runs in your mind, what

  563. intrusive thought do you have? And what I mean by that is if

  564. you do have trauma in your past, you can be doing fine.

  565. And then all of a sudden, something can trigger you in

  566. this, intrusive thought comes over you like you're gonna die,

  567. you shouldn't get in the car. You should never get old flame.

  568. I mean, it's these things that can just come over you.

  569. Listen to this question. What negative thoughts are

  570. triggered by emotions in your life when you feel sad what- or

  571. destructive thought patterns come up?

  572. Here's something crazy. But I've seen this is, I've

  573. counseled people as a pastor, sometimes people even have

  574. negative thought patterns associated with joy in their

  575. life. As soon as everything's good,

  576. like everything's okay. I'm joyful.

  577. It's a great day but you know what the thought pattern is

  578. well, something bad's about to happen because every time I've

  579. ever had peace in my life right around the corner.

  580. With something bad. You know what that is?

  581. That's a broken thought pattern. So what does God say?

  582. I'm working all things together for your good.

  583. I love you. I have plans for you.

  584. I purpose for you don't think like that, it's not that hard

  585. times are not going to come, but I want good for you.

  586. Here's another question. What sinful thoughts?

  587. Do you entertain? What Temptations overwhelm your

  588. thought life? That's evaluating your life.

  589. Evaluating how you're doing? If you'll take time to answer

  590. those questions, listen, You'll find Freedom in Jesus in one

  591. area. Do you know what the enemy

  592. hates? He hates it.

  593. When we stop just wanting to feel good about church and we

  594. start taking action on getting life change, he hates it, do you

  595. know why the enemy hates it? When you start evaluating what's

  596. going on in your mind? It's because at that moment

  597. meant was Wrong hole start breaking down and you start

  598. taking your thoughts captive and transformation comes you know

  599. what the enemy hates a transform man or woman of God in Jesus

  600. Christ. But after you evaluate, here's

  601. the second piece, you have to do in replace.

  602. You have to replace the lies with the truth.

  603. So as you evaluate, you then have to identify.

  604. What am I believing? This is the great journaling

  605. process by the way. What am I believing?

  606. What thought process is there? That shouldn't be there?

  607. It's always going to be based on a life.

  608. There's a broken thought process whether it's from the time you

  609. were a kid till the last week something happened.

  610. It's always going to be based on a lot.

  611. So we have to identify lies and then we have to replace the

  612. lies. With true.

  613. See it's not just good enough to say.

  614. I'm not going to believe a lie anymore.

  615. You have to also say I'm going to start believing the truth.

  616. You ever thought about this? Where does Ally come from?

  617. Like you don't have to teach your kids to lie.

  618. Nobody had to teach me to anyway maybe y'all holy when I was a

  619. kid. I mean, nobody had to teach me

  620. to lie. Where do those come from?

  621. Only show. You what Jesus said he's talking

  622. to the Pharisees here. So it's kind of getting really

  623. hard on him. He's like dropping a bomb.

  624. You're the children of your father, the devil.

  625. It's pretty strong statement, right?

  626. And do you you love to do evil things?

  627. He does. He was a murderer from the

  628. beginning. His always hated truth because

  629. there is no truth in him. When he lies it is consistent

  630. with his character for. He is a liar and where do those

  631. come from? He's the father of them.

  632. The devil is the father of Lies so anytime you have a broken

  633. drop thought process guess what it's based on a lie that the

  634. enemy has told you somewhere could have come at you, not

  635. through Satan himself, but through another person but it's

  636. based on a lie. See, Satan's greatest weapon is

  637. this lies? Deep, do you know what?

  638. The good news is about this. He has no new weapons, he has no

  639. new tactics and he never will. Do you know what he did?

  640. The first sin was committed because Satan tempted Eve.

  641. And then Adam failed in the garden.

  642. Do you know what he did? He lied, but he mixed just

  643. enough truth in with Ally to wear it sounded okay.

  644. But what does the scripture say? There's no truth in him.

  645. He hates the truth. He is the father of Lies.

  646. The good news is he has no new tactics, we know that he's

  647. coming at us with lies. Therefore, we can prepare to win

  648. our greatest weapon against the lies.

  649. It's the truth of God's word. The truth of God's word.

  650. Say here's the deal. If you believe the lie that you

  651. are not enough then, guess what you will live as though you're

  652. not enough. Let me speak to all the women in

  653. the house for a moment. If you believe the lie that you

  654. were not enough, you will continue to live as though

  655. you're not enough, even though God says your chosen your minds

  656. your redeemed, you are worthy. Let me speak to the men in the

  657. room for a moment. Maybe life is beating you down?

  658. Maybe it's your fault. Maybe it's somebody else's

  659. fault. If you live as though, you are

  660. not with, if you believe in your mind that I'm not really worthy,

  661. then guess what you will live as though, you're not worthy.

  662. Let me speak to the addicts in the house who love Jesus but

  663. you're still struggling or maybe you don't love Jesus yet maybe

  664. you're not surrender but your stroke if you don't believe you

  665. can beat Addiction in Jesus name, you never will.

  666. I'm not saying that you don't need help and counseling and

  667. rehab and you don't need small. Group community in God's word,

  668. you need all the tools but I'm just saying if you believe I can

  669. never beat that and guess what? You probably never will.

  670. If you don't believe that you can be forgiven because the I

  671. know some of you like me, you gotta pass.

  672. How many of you got a pass? Come on Oakwood.

  673. If you got a pass, the enemy will come along and say you can

  674. never be forgiven and if you believe that you will live in

  675. Shane for the rest of your life, Here's the saddest part.

  676. There are some followers of Jesus who have given their lives

  677. to him and still live in shame every day.

  678. If you don't think you can be transformed by Christ, then you

  679. won't pick up the weapons. He's giving you the live New

  680. Life by the spirit. Let me give you a powerful

  681. truth. This actually came from a book.

  682. I read from Pastor Craig groeschel on the subject.

  683. If you believe a lie that lie will impact your life is those

  684. true. Thought about that when I

  685. believe lies about me when I believe I'm not worthy all of a

  686. sudden I live as though, I'm not worthy when I believe that I'm

  687. not good enough to pass through this church.

  688. Guess what? I started making decisions like

  689. I'm not good enough to pass through this church I believe I

  690. can't be a good enough father guess what?

  691. I start making decisions as though See, once you thought

  692. something enough times, especially alive.

  693. Do you know what it creates in our lives?

  694. It creates a rut in our brain. Literally that's my country boy

  695. term for a neural pathway. All right.

  696. I would never use that word in the sentence.

  697. But rut I know it'll run is neuropath way.

  698. I know what it is to get your mind in a rut, and you can't get

  699. out of it, but it's called scientifically a neuro pathway

  700. see when she thought a negative thought over and over and over

  701. again, and maybe it's been reinforced in your life.

  702. Let me give you an example somewhere along the way.

  703. Somebody told you when you're a kid, you're not enough for your

  704. parents made, you feel like that and then you made a bad grade at

  705. school and the teacher said, you know what, you're not smart and

  706. then you tried out for the basketball team and you didn't

  707. make the basketball team coach said, hey, you're not good

  708. enough. And then you ask the girl on the

  709. date. Finally, and she I said no and

  710. that told you again rejection. You're not good enough.

  711. You know what you believe after a while there's a trench in your

  712. brain that the rest of your life.

  713. I'm not good enough. I'm not good enough.

  714. I've tried it, I'm not good enough but here's the beauty.

  715. Did you know that lie? Ruts can be replaced with truth

  716. trenches. You can actually physically

  717. change and rewire your brain to where your natural throat

  718. process. I can do this because the Christ

  719. I can do all things through Christ.

  720. Who strengthens me? So we can literally change remap

  721. our brains. Its Fizz is scientifically

  722. mapped out now. And again there's a lot of words

  723. I had in my first set of notes and I'm like I can't pronounce

  724. that so I can't say it to you but here's what I will tell you

  725. truth, trenches can literally take the place of lie.

  726. Ruts, you ever been four wheeling before.

  727. I'm going to help my country boy Roots again here. see if

  728. somebody went through a mud hole before you and a truck that was

  729. bigger than yours, You know what you got to do?

  730. Stay out of the ruts. You know why?

  731. Because once you fall off in a rut that you can't get out, I

  732. mean, you were either stuck. Are you gonna have to follow

  733. that rut all the way through the mud hole?

  734. So many of us in our brains, we fallen off in the Rut like a mud

  735. hole and we can't get out. We're just spinning our Wheels

  736. right now, same little track, all the way down.

  737. Here's the good news. We can replace lie, ruts with

  738. truth, trenches and God's word gives us hope of that.

  739. Change the way you think, the Holy Spirit has given you power

  740. to get out of the rut establish, a new trench of thinking?

  741. A true trench of thinking, see it's an ongoing process here.

  742. But here's the third part of it, we must then, establish you got,

  743. evaluate your thoughts, you gotta replace lies with truth,

  744. but you can't stop here. Honestly, this is what can

  745. happen on a Sunday morning. Sometimes you can be sitting out

  746. there thinking, man. He's right, there's a broken

  747. thought process I'm evaluating right now in church and you know

  748. I need to get some truth from God's word to replace that lie

  749. with. But then we walk out of here and

  750. guess what life is you and your wife getting a I don't know, way

  751. home, you're not speaking. You kids are, you know, beating

  752. each other in the back seat, you get home and you get the bills

  753. out of the out of the other, you know, out or you get a phone

  754. call collections calls, you get right there and then at that

  755. moment you think you know what you're not worthy, you're not

  756. worth it, you'll never be it comes right back on you.

  757. Again, this is the part where you were going to have to work

  758. over the next four weeks. If we want to see

  759. transformation, establish these true trenches, it's not a one

  760. and done. This is why you can't just make

  761. up your mind to change. And and we Fall.

  762. Right back many times. You have to renew your mind that

  763. ongoing process letting the Holy Spirit and God's true change.

  764. How you think and what and perceive what's going on around

  765. you thinking establishing new thinking habits?

  766. Here's something amazing that I found it.

  767. I studied this. Do you know what the weapons to

  768. establish, true? Trenches are like to establish

  769. them obviously being in God's word every day.

  770. Simply what it means to follow Jesus.

  771. Just like I'm going to read God's word every day.

  772. I'm gonna get my Bible app out instead of scrolling Facebook.

  773. First, I'm going to open up you version.

  774. I'm going to start reading scripture over my life.

  775. First thing, I'm going to open my bible at the table.

  776. I'm going to read that God's word is a weapon to start.

  777. Forming a new true trench prayer is a weapon.

  778. Christian Community, is a weapon that God has given us being in

  779. church together. Worshiping there's something

  780. powerful about rewiring your thinking being around other

  781. people who are going to lift you up instead of pushing.

  782. Down pull you out. Instead of pushing you back

  783. where you came from? Listen, that changes everything.

  784. And so, renewing our mind in Christ.

  785. It's actually just following Jesus.

  786. Just being a follower of Christ. Now, you may need a counselor,

  787. sometimes we may need medication.

  788. Listen, you may need help, you may need mentors.

  789. You may need a small group is just pour into you.

  790. But who knew the daily practices of changing?

  791. Our thinking habits is literally just daily Walking With Jesus.

  792. I thought about it. You ever been to some of you did

  793. this in January. You haven't been to the gym all

  794. year, but then in January, like, I'm going to change my health

  795. and you went to the gym. How did you feel the next day?

  796. Terrible? Right, there's somebody I Greg

  797. on our staff. I remember he went to the gym

  798. the first time he was like, I'm tapping out matters to our, he

  799. finally got back in there, he's like, but he pushed through it

  800. when I first started going back to then.

  801. Just guess what? You hurt all over.

  802. This is how it is with changing out.

  803. The way that we think at first, it hurts all over, but then,

  804. eventually time after time, you just keep going.

  805. And Day by day, and you get stronger, and stronger than that

  806. new way of thinking takes over. And remember, you got a holy

  807. spirit, super power, that's going to help you with this, but

  808. there's actually one more step that I've got to point out today

  809. and that's this once we've established it.

  810. Okay, I'm establishing this, I'm going to start declaring it.

  811. This may be the most powerful piece declare the truth over

  812. your life until you believe it can see.

  813. For some of you I can look at you and I can say, you know,

  814. that God says that he has a good Plan for your life and you hear

  815. that and it kind of impacts how you think for a second.

  816. But then your old thought process takes back over again.

  817. But the next week when I see, you know, I always say you

  818. matter so much because you don't believe it.

  819. Sometimes you come in, not believing it.

  820. And so I come up again and I say, you know what Oakwood you

  821. matter I look at the people here in Gainesville, you know what,

  822. watch it. We have so many faithful one

  823. reporter Riverbend that watch online.

  824. I look at you and I say you matter, you know why?

  825. Because you get so beaten down. You don't believe it.

  826. But every time somebody else says, it to you, every time you

  827. say, it out of your mouth, you know what I do matter in Jesus

  828. name, all of a sudden, a new trend starts getting cut in your

  829. mind and eventually you'll start living in such a way.

  830. And so we have to evaluate replace establish and declare.

  831. Now we talked about this idea before, but look what Jesus

  832. said. It's not what goes into your

  833. mouth that defiles you your defiled by the Words that come

  834. out of your mouth. Check this out.

  835. You often think that your words are just impacting other people,

  836. but guess whose ears also hear the words?

  837. You say, you do. In Jesus name, the truth of

  838. God's word spoken from our mouths.

  839. Literally can change how we think make a declaration over

  840. your life. Speak truth until you believe

  841. it. Hopefully do this process.

  842. Some of you guys are going to write a sentence.

  843. That's a declaration that you need replace the lie with truth.

  844. Start establishing a new way of thinking about your life about

  845. your spouse, about finances, about the addiction you wrestle

  846. with about the piece in your piece of you, you want to see

  847. transformed by Christ, start thinking differently, but this

  848. start declaring God's word over it just speak it over you.

  849. Instead of saying I am not enough you can say in Christ.

  850. I know that I'm enough. I have a Hard time with that.

  851. I have a hard time saying. I am enough still to this day

  852. because they're still old rut in my brain up here.

  853. They want to go down that path. I used to go down but eventually

  854. you come to the point. Go ahead.

  855. It's not about me. I'm not being prideful, I'm just

  856. saying Jesus died for me. He thought I was that valuable

  857. as to die for me. So I must have some value right

  858. in him. So I say, I am forgiven, I'm a

  859. Child of God, I do have purpose, I can change because Jesus said,

  860. I can, I can start over. Or because the mercy of the Lord

  861. is new every morning, I am free in Christ.

  862. There's no sinner bondage that can hold me back.

  863. I'm a new creation. I am loved.

  864. Do you hear how even just reading those things over the

  865. room, like lifts the room today? Listen, the bottom line is, we

  866. begin the stalwart journey journey today is this.

  867. We're going to walk in deeper in these in the next few weeks.

  868. But for you, is it time to start thinking about what you're

  869. thinking about, do you need to declare thought were so you can

  870. start winning in Jesus name Church?

  871. It is time to fight. I'm so tired of people thinking

  872. that hope is a battle tactic. We talked about Hope and

  873. projecting hope we do. We have hope in his name is

  874. Jesus. He's the anchor for our souls.

  875. I know all that. But listen if you hope and you

  876. don't fight, you're going to lose.

  877. You can't just hope. You've got to actually say, I'm

  878. at War, I'm declaring, thought war, and I'm ready to win it in

  879. Christ. I'm going to change my thinking

  880. and let him change my life. So, I'm going to ask you both

  881. here in at Oakwood. Just a couple of difficult

  882. questions. Are you wrestling in your mental

  883. health today? And in your thought processes,

  884. you may not even see it as mental unhealthy.

  885. You may just see it as I just got some broken thought

  886. processes in my brain. How I think about myself, how

  887. think about the world around me? And the second question is this,

  888. are you really ready to do was going to take to get

  889. transformation? So you may be for you today, may

  890. be watching online maybe at Oakwood today.

  891. If you are at a place where you've never surrendered your

  892. life to Christ, then you're fighting alone.

  893. That's why I say you can take all these.

  894. You can take these steps and you can apply them to your life.

  895. But without surrender to Jesus, you're missing the superpower

  896. which is the spirit of God that helps you.

  897. The lifts you up that empowers you to make a change?

  898. He is the life change. He is the new life inside of you

  899. and so maybe the first step to winning the war in your mind is

  900. Just Surrender Your Life to Jesus and say Today.

  901. Jesus, I'm ready to surrender. My life is yours.

  902. My life is yours, but I do want to ask you.

  903. Today to respond with your feet. So in just a moment, I want to

  904. ask this both here in at Oakwood to stand up and as I asked us to

  905. stay in. Here's what I want you to do a

  906. bold declaration and say Joe, I need somebody to declare some

  907. truth and some hope over my life today I'm ready to start the war

  908. but here's what the Lord led me to end with today whether you

  909. just surrendered your life to Christ or you're already a

  910. Christ follower or you just want this decoration spoken over you

  911. in Christ. If you change your thinking you

  912. can change your life but I think it's gonna take a bold and

  913. courageous step. Someone asks you to come down

  914. here. That's you in just a moment

  915. Oakwood. I'm gonna ask you to push your

  916. way to the front and I'm going to declare God just kind of led

  917. me to write down some words and I want to read it, but I want to

  918. declare it over you today because I believe what it, what

  919. if this is the first step is somebody else.

  920. Because maybe, you don't even believe you can win, but I do.

  921. And so I wanted to clear it over you today.

  922. Here's what I asked us to do, if that's you and you go Joe.

  923. I'm wrestling in my mind. I need somebody to declare it

  924. over. Listen, remove the stigma, who

  925. cares? We're not talking about what

  926. you're wrestling with, it can be brand-new or and old thing.

  927. But what if the first step is you getting honest with God.

  928. Thinking about what you're thinking about and let's start

  929. declaring hope over it today. So here's what I want to do on

  930. the count of three, I'm going to say standing as you stand.

  931. I want you to come both here in Oakwood one, two, three, come

  932. on, stay and come on down here right now, if that's you, I want

  933. you to crowd in as close as you can.

  934. Come on down here. Come on right here y'all.

  935. Come on over. Yes, come on Oakwood.

  936. Come on down, right here to the front right now.

  937. Thank you for your obedience. Y'all crowd in right here.

  938. Come on. I'm gonna give you a minute,

  939. don't wait. If the if the if the Lord's

  940. already spoke to your heart, you already felt like that drawing.

  941. I want you to come on down here, come on right here to the front.

  942. Come around me right here. It's okay.

  943. There's nothing's gonna bite right here in the front.

  944. Come on down, waiting on you. Come on Oak Wood, right here to

  945. the front on down here. Here's what I want you to do

  946. during the room today. I want you to help me and just

  947. pray for the people that are here because I'm tell you guys,

  948. I'm proud of you because this is a bold step to get out of your

  949. seat and come here you guys at Oakwood.

  950. I'm proud of you because it's hard, it's not easy Bears.

  951. Don't want you to do. If you're here, I want to ask if

  952. you feel comfortable with it, you know, close your eyes, and I

  953. want you to listen to the words, I want to speak over you today.

  954. In Christ, you are enough. No matter what addiction or

  955. regret or past sin or Brokenness?

  956. You've come here with in Jesus Christ, you are forgiven and

  957. free. If you feel like a loser, you

  958. are a winner in Christ. If you feel defeated, you are a

  959. Victor in Christ. If you feel like your life is

  960. not worth living, you have a God who stepped out of Heaven.

  961. His name is Jesus Christ. He thought your life was so

  962. valuable that he went to the cross for you, he has purpose

  963. for you. If you feel like you miss the

  964. opportunity in the past, your life isn't over your serve.

  965. A God, who says your story isn't over?

  966. Jesus can redeem time and make something out of nothing.

  967. The mercy of the Lord is new every morning, over your life,

  968. you're gonna go to sleep tonight and God's Mercy is gonna hit you

  969. brand-new in the morning. No matter how broken you come to

  970. him today, whether your thoughts are broken, whether you have

  971. mental illness, whether you just been beaten down by life.

  972. For too long listing, you are loved.

  973. You are valuable you matter and today is a new day as you

  974. surrender your life to Jesus today.

  975. As you make this bold declaration to get out of your

  976. seats, we Proclaim as your friends, as your brothers and

  977. sisters, you can change your thinking, Let Jesus change your

  978. life. May the Lord set you free today.

  979. In Jesus name and everybody said, amen.

  980. Can we just give the Lord a hand for what he's doing today?

  981. Thank you, guys. I'll let you all be seated and

  982. Oakwood. You can be seated, come on,

  983. stand up together unless worship together as we close this time
