  12. just waiting with smirks on our face about your metabolism.

  13. Catching up with your habits #9 half of adulthood is deciding

  14. what to make for dinner every single day until you die #8 you

  15. became You become irrationally excited about new kitchen

  16. appliances. Facts #7 Going somewhere now

  17. requires checking the weather, the traffic, the calendar, the

  18. budget and energy level. That's why we rarely go

  19. anywhere. Number six, The older you get,

  20. the faster time moves and the slower you stand up again.

  21. Facts #5 You'll throw away boxes from something you bought and

  22. immediately need them 14 minutes later #4 You spend your

  23. childhood wanting freedom and your adulthood wanting a nap #3

  24. a quiet Saturday becomes more exciting than a wild Friday

  25. night. Again, facts #2 you can injure

  26. yourself sleeping incorrectly. If you don't know what I mean,

  27. you will. And then number one, top 10

  28. reasons or top 10 things Nobody Told you about adulthood.

  29. You finally get money to buy what you want right around the

  30. time you become too tired to go anywhere.

  31. I don't know if you caught on a theme.

  32. They're young people, but you will get tired so and stay

  33. tired. Naps are from God and we'll get

  34. we're going to get to that when it talks about Sabbath later on

  35. in this series, but this series is really going to be all about

  36. us diving into from the earliest chapters of the Bible.

  37. God gave his chosen people, the Jewish people, the nation of

  38. Israel. What Jewish rabbis refer to as

  39. the Azerat had a Berean. Literally the 10 words, what you

  40. and I now know as the 10 commandments.

  41. And these 10 commandments that God gave, that he inscribed on

  42. stone tablets gave to Moses were to be given to the people of

  43. Israel. That right after they had been

  44. called out of slavery, 400 years of slavery out of Egypt to, to

  45. guide them on their way from Egypt on through the wilderness

  46. into the Promised land. These 10 commandments, most of

  47. us are familiar with the 10 commandments.

  48. These 10 commandments serve as the basis of our moral code and,

  49. and, and in our code of law. And to this day, there's still

  50. disputes and legal fights over their presence hanging in

  51. classrooms or courtrooms or on the public square.

  52. I think that most of us are very familiar with the, with the 10

  53. commandments. However, in 2007, Reuters

  54. conducted a survey and Reuters, in this survey, they discovered

  55. that Americans could more easily and and and, and, and readily

  56. recite the seven ingredient ingredients that make up a

  57. McDonald's Big Mac then they could the 10 commandments.

  58. And while that's like not that, that that survey is about 20

  59. years old, subsequent surveys have shown that, that, that that

  60. gap hasn't closed. As a matter of fact, it's

  61. widened now. But here's the here's the big

  62. issue. And I'm not saying that it's a

  63. light issue that, that, that we can't, we don't know the 10

  64. commandments. But here's the bigger issue, I

  65. think is there seems to be a disconnect between what the 10

  66. commandments are now and why they still matter to us.

  67. Here's here's what I mean is, is, is you've almost got like

  68. two sides of the of a debate, right?

  69. You've got like the grace of Jesus and you've got the law of

  70. the commandments. And some would say, hey, because

  71. Jesus has come and he offers grace and mercy and forgiveness,

  72. then the law and the commandments, then they're

  73. pretty much obsolete. I, I can, I can, I can believe

  74. how I want to believe. I can think how I want to think.

  75. I can, I can behave how I want to behave.

  76. I don't necessarily have to worry about the 10 commandments.

  77. They're they're, they're seemingly at odds and what we're

  78. going to do, what we're going to discover starting this morning

  79. and throughout the summer is the grace of Jesus and the law of

  80. the commandments. They're not at odds.

  81. They actually complement one another.

  82. They actually complement one another or set another way.

  83. If you're taking notes with us, here's the truth that's going to

  84. be running throughout the series that serves as the big idea.

  85. Jesus did not make my personal holiness optional.

  86. He made it possible. Jesus did not make my personal

  87. holiness optional. He made it possible.

  88. Let's kind of lean into that for a second because I think there's

  89. some terms that we have to define personal holiness.

  90. If you're new to church, whether you're in the room or online

  91. with us, here's probably the best way to describe personal

  92. holiness or to define personal holiness.

  93. Personal holiness is the process of of becoming more Christ like.

  94. Is is is is thinking and loving and, and acting more like Jesus

  95. than I did the day before. It's the process of allowing the

  96. Holy Spirit of God to transform me from who I was into who he

  97. created me to be. It's, it's becoming more Christ

  98. like and that that is a process. And that process doesn't happen

  99. in isolation from the world. That process always happens in

  100. the midst of transformation within the world.

  101. So our call as followers of Jesus and our call as the church

  102. is not to go move out to some obscure island and, and just

  103. have church services 24/7, 7 days of the of, of the week.

  104. Our, our, our, our mission from God is to be transformed from

  105. within the culture that the Holy Spirit of God can transform us

  106. from the inside out. So when we say that Jesus did

  107. not come to make my personal holiness optional, he came to

  108. make it possible. What we're saying is, is the 10

  109. laws, the 10 commandments that God is going to give us from the

  110. very beginning, Exodus chapter 20, they cannot be fully

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  111. fulfilled in our own effort. They can't be fully fulfilled in

  112. our own effort alone that we need the empowerment of the Holy

  113. Spirit of God in us. So with that said, I want us to

  114. dive into if you have a Bible with you, we're going to look at

  115. Exodus chapter 20 starting in verse one.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  116. We're going to look at the first of these 10 commandments says

  117. and God spoke all these words saying I am the Lord your God

  118. who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the House of

  119. slavery. You shall have no other gods

  120. before me. Now this commandment, this first

  121. commandment, you shall have no other gods before me.

  122. I would argue and many scholars argue that if we keep this

  123. commandment, all other commandments that follow all

  124. other non commandments that follow kind of take care of

  125. themselves. This is the the the the primary,

  126. the pre eminent of the 10 commandments.

  127. You shall have no other gods before me.

  128. Now to help us kind of digest it more easily and for us to walk

  129. through it and explain it more easily, there's going to be a

  130. template that we're going to follow throughout this series

  131. and it's going to follow this template.

  132. We're going to talk about the standard.

  133. So what exactly is God saying through this commandment?

  134. We'll talk about the struggle or why is this commandment so hard

  135. for me to keep? And then we'll talk about the

  136. step or the steps of obedience that I have to take in order to

  137. keep this commandment. So let's start with a standard.

  138. If you're taking notes with us, this is what no other gods

  139. before me really means. There can be no dual allegiance.

  140. There can be no dual allegiance. Now, if you remember, you go all

  141. the way back to the Old Testament, the very beginning of

  142. the book of Exodus. You have the nation of Israel.

  143. They've been enslaved by the Egyptian people for over 400

  144. years and they've been, they, they've been worked to slaves

  145. and, and, and God set them free. And do you, do you remember how

  146. God set them free? He, he brought about 10 horrific

  147. plagues on the nation of Israel to finally where the Pharaoh of

  148. Egypt said, all right, that's it.

  149. You'll get out of town. You'll go take, take all of you

  150. with you. I'm, I'm sick and tired of, of

  151. having my people suffer this way.

  152. You remember the 10 plagues? Did you know that those 10

  153. plagues weren't just coincidental or or haphazard?

  154. Did you know that the 10 plagues that God brought upon the nation

  155. of Israel were direct assaults on the Egyptian gods?

  156. So, for example, you remember the first plague to where God

  157. turned the round the Nile River into blood and how horrific that

  158. must have been. That was a direct assault on the

  159. Egyptian God Hapi. He was considered the the God of

  160. the Nile River. Or do you remember the, the,

  161. the, the, the plague to where the entire land of Egypt was

  162. just flooded with frogs. Everywhere you looked, there was

  163. a frog. Everywhere you stepped, there

  164. was a frog. Frogs were everywhere.

  165. Frogs were in the house. Frogs were on the ceiling.

  166. Frogs were in the bathroom. You could not go anywhere to

  167. where there wasn't a frog. God flooded the land of Egypt

  168. with frogs. You may say, well, that's a

  169. weird plague for God to bring on the nation of Egypt.

  170. Like God really like went into his bag and got creative on that

  171. one, you know, flood the nation with frogs.

  172. Well here's what you may not know is the Egyptians worshipped

  173. a God headed or a frog headed goddess by the name of Hakkat

  174. who was known to be to be worshipped as the goddess of

  175. fertility. It was a direct assault on

  176. Hakkkat. Remember the 9th plague to where

  177. God just basically just shut out the sun and all of Egypt was

  178. covered in darkness. Not not the not the Egyptians

  179. place, but the rest of of Egypt. They're not the Israelites

  180. place, but all the rest of Egypt.

  181. That was a direct assault on the Egyptian God who they consider

  182. the supreme God, RA, the sun God and even the last plague the the

  183. the death of the first born. That was a direct assault on

  184. Pharaoh himself. That was considered who was

  185. considered to be a living God by the Egyptians.

  186. You see, systematically through the plagues, God basically set

  187. him up and knocked him down. He exposed them not only to be

  188. weak, but to be fraudulent and fake.

  189. So when God is saying to the nation of Israel this first

  190. commandment, you're to have no other God except me, He.

  191. It wasn't so much a statement about superiority, it was really

  192. more of a statement about exclusivity.

  193. It was really a statement about exclusivity.

  194. No dual allegiance. There is no other God but

  195. Yahweh. So that's the standard.

  196. Well, what's the struggle? Here's the struggle.

  197. It's a word that I came up with called and ISM and ISM.

  198. It has a dash if you want to be chromatic, chromatically

  199. correct. I know because I came up with it

  200. and ISM. Let's talk about what and ISM

  201. is. I think that we would all hear

  202. 2026. We would go, OK, I'm been I'm on

  203. board with there being no other God except for the God of the

  204. Bible, Yahweh. No other God.

  205. So how in the world if I believe that there's no other God other

  206. than the God of the Bible, Yahweh, then how in the world

  207. can I struggle to keep this commandment even though there's

  208. no other God but the God of the Bible, Yahweh?

  209. I think that we would all agree that there's so many things, so

  210. many what we would call rivals for our hearts desires and what

  211. for our attention and for our devotion.

  212. Let's kind of sit down on that one for a second.

  213. I've never known anyone, I've never known anyone in my entire

  214. life that like showed me around their house and in their back

  215. bedroom they had like a pile of cash and they made an altar to

  216. this pile of cash and they said, hey, every night before I go to

  217. bed, I just want to let you know I kneel at this altar and I'll

  218. OfferUp a prayer to this pile of cash.

  219. Never met anybody like that. But I do know a lot of people

  220. who say they love God and they go to church, yet they make

  221. money. They're God encompassing life.

  222. I've never met anybody that offered an animal sacrifice to a

  223. family portrait, but I do know a lot of people that say I love

  224. God and I go to church, but they make their family and their

  225. families happiness the guiding compass of their life.

  226. You ever met anyone you ever met anyone who who who who knelt

  227. down and and and prayed to a selfie?

  228. Me neither. However, I think that we would

  229. all agree. We know a lot of people that say

  230. they love God and they go to church, yet they make the

  231. pursuit of their personal pleasure, whether it be

  232. popularity or sex or or or any type of substance.

  233. They make that their guiding compass in life.

  234. And here lies the the the main issue.

  235. It is a lie that we can so easily believe and, and I

  236. believe that this, that this lie is accepted on a rampant scale

  237. in western, in the Western culture of the Western world,

  238. especially in America, especially in the American

  239. church, is we have convinced ourselves, I can love God and

  240. money. I can love God and my family.

  241. I can love God and myself and this is where Jesus drops the

  242. hammer. Check this out Matthew chapter

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  243. 6. Jesus says no one can serve 2

  244. masters for either he will hate the one and love the other or he

  245. will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

  246. You cannot serve God and money. Now let me ask you a question.

  247. Why did Jesus bring up money? Because money has been one of

  248. those and isms from the very beginning.

  249. The pursuit of more has been one of those andisms.

  250. So what Jesus is saying here is if you and I were really

  251. concerned about our personal holiness, let me kind of

  252. rephrase that. If you and I are really

  253. concerned about growing in Christ likeness, loving like

  254. Jesus loved, thinking how Jesus thinks, behaving how Jesus would

  255. behave, living our lives the way that Jesus would live life would

  256. have us to live life, then we've got to absolutely rid ourselves

  257. of andisms in our lives. And let's be really honest,

  258. whether you're in the room or online, I think that we've all

  259. got them. I think that we've all got our

  260. preferred andism, don't we? I love God, and so how do we rid

  261. ourselves of the andisms in our lives?

  262. We've seen the standard, We've seen the struggle.

  263. Let's look at the step, or in this case, steps of obedience.

  264. Here's the first one. Remember your deliverance,

  265. pledge your allegiance. Remember your deliverance,

  266. pledge your allegiance. I want to show you something.

  267. Let's go back to Exodus chapter 20.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  268. This is in verse 2 when God said I am the Lord your God who

  269. brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the House of

  270. slavery. Let me ask you a question right

  271. before handing down the 10 commandments.

  272. Why did God, why did God have to remind the people of this?

  273. Hey, I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of

  274. Egypt, out of the House of slavery.

  275. I think it was God declaring from Mount Sinai.

  276. Hey Israel, remember how you were, you were captive in, in,

  277. in Egypt for 400 years. I'm the one that delivered you.

  278. Hey Israel, remember how you were a slave and your mom and

  279. your dad before you, they were slaves.

  280. And your children that came after you, they were slaves.

  281. I'm the one that delivered you. Hey, Israel, acknowledge your

  282. deliverance and now pledge your allegiance.

  283. Let's put some 2026 shoes on that thought.

  284. Do me a favor, if you're in the room with us, you can do this.

  285. If you're joining us online, as long as you're not driving, you

  286. can do this. I would encourage you to do this

  287. just where you're at. I just want to invite you to

  288. close your eyes. close your eyes.

  289. Our ushers aren't going to come and like steal your bags or

  290. anything like that. We'll get to the thou shall not

  291. steal later on. You don't have to worry about

  292. that, but just close your eyes and here's what I want to, I

  293. want to guide you through just asking a couple questions where

  294. you're at with your eyes closed. I just want you to take a moment

  295. to remember what your life was like before you surrendered it

  296. to Jesus. Let's drill down into more

  297. specifics. Do you remember that feeling of

  298. of knowing that something was missing in your life?

  299. Maybe you gave your life to Jesus when you were young, but

  300. you still remember when you were young that there was just

  301. something missing. Maybe you gave your life to

  302. Jesus when you were an adult. Maybe you were you were you were

  303. an older adult and you just know that there you just knew that

  304. there was something missing. Do you remember that sense of

  305. hopelessness or even fear of the unknown?

  306. Do you remember laying awake at night being concerned, being

  307. worried about the unknown? Do you remember sitting in maybe

  308. in a church service, maybe somebody invited you to come to

  309. a church service and because you knew that there was something

  310. missing, there was a there, there was almost this paralyzing

  311. hopelessness and fear over the unknown.

  312. Do you remember the weight of shame and and guilt that was

  313. always accusing you in the background, always accusing you

  314. and convincing you that you were the worst version that you could

  315. possibly be? That there was no saving you,

  316. There was no redeeming you, There was no making you better?

  317. It was an accusing voice. Do you remember that frustration

  318. of not being able to be freed up from addictions or not being

  319. able to be able to be freed up from?

  320. Being unable to offer forgiveness towards someone and

  321. that sense of bitterness just like sits heavy on your heart.

  322. Do you remember what it was like before you surrendered your life

  323. to Jesus? All right, you can open your

  324. eyes. Let me ask you a question.

  325. When it comes to all of those scenarios.

  326. Here's my guess. Money.

  327. Your job, a promotion. They want your deliverer, your

  328. wife, your kids, your family, your future family.

  329. They want your deliverer. The the popularity, notoriety,

  330. followers, cliques, they weren't your deliverer.

  331. And if they weren't your deliverer then then none of

  332. those things could ever be your deliverer.

  333. Now here's the hope of the gospel.

  334. Jesus Christ is our only deliverer.

  335. He was then, he is now, he always will be.

  336. I think that a healthy, healthy spiritual habit and spiritual

  337. discipline is for us to spend a little bit of time each day

  338. thinking about all that God has delivered us from and allow that

  339. deliverance to pull us into pledging our allegiance to Him

  340. on the daily. So the first step of obedience

  341. is I've got to remember my deliverance.

  342. Remember my deliverance and then allow that remembrance to propel

  343. me into pledging my allegiance. The second step of obedience

  344. this morning is this. Put to death lesser gods with a

  345. lowercase G Put to death lesser gods.

  346. Now this seems pretty harsh. It seems pretty blunt, but it is

  347. so, so necessary. Put to death lesser gods.

  348. Let me show you what how Paul writes it in the book of

  349. Colossians. He writes put to death

  350. therefore, what is earthly in you?

  351. Sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and

  352. covetousness, which is idolatry. Can I tell you this?

  353. Maybe the issue is not like your place of work, your your

  354. ambition for the promotion. Maybe the issues not your not

  355. your husband or your wife or your kids or your family.

  356. Maybe your issue is not like how God has uniquely wired you.

  357. Maybe it's not any of those things.

  358. It very well could be what you have made of those things.

  359. And what I mean is it is so easy for us to take good things and

  360. to turn them into God things. We, we, we see this playing out

  361. even in the, even in the book of Romans, at the very beginning of

  362. the book of Romans to where to where Paul writes that they

  363. worship the creation rather than the creator.

  364. It's very easy and very possible for us to take good things and

  365. to turn them into God things to make idols out of our job, out

  366. of a promotion, out of our family, out of self.

  367. And what does God tell us to do with idols?

  368. He calls us to put to death those idols.

  369. Now, here's what that doesn't mean.

  370. That does not mean they were all called to go quit our jobs,

  371. leave our families and to go relocate in in a monastery in

  372. the desert. That's for November in the

  373. elections. That's when we want to do that.

  374. No, in in all seriousness, it it doesn't mean that we're to all

  375. to go quit our jobs, leave our families, and then move to a

  376. monastery in the desert to to put to death lesser gods here.

  377. Here's what that means. It means that as Paul writes

  378. throughout the New Testament, hey, listen, if you set your

  379. mind on the things of the Spirit, you will walk in the

  380. Spirit. But if you set your mind on the

  381. things of the flesh, you will walk in the flesh.

  382. In other words, what you and I set our mind and what we set our

  383. thoughts to, Guess what? That's what guides our feet.

  384. Our thoughts will inevitably guide our direction.

  385. So you and I, we always come to a crossroads here.

  386. Here's the crossroads is we can either act like and pretend that

  387. we can still grow in Christ likeness and impersonal holiness

  388. while holding on to an and ISM and I'll go ahead and tell you

  389. you can't Why? Because you're violating the

  390. first of God's laws and God won't honor that.

  391. Or you can acknowledge, hey, God, there have been some

  392. things, some good things in my life that I've turned into God.

  393. Things. I've made these good things that

  394. you blessed me with. I've made them into many gods.

  395. I've made them into idols. In your notes at the bottom of

  396. your note sheet, I want you to take a moment.

  397. Nobody, you're not going to turn this in or read it in in into a

  398. microphone or ask anybody to, to look at it or proofread it.

  399. But I want you to answer this question here it is.

  400. What good thing am I most likely to make into a God thing?

  401. What good thing am I most likely to make into a God thing?

  402. You need a you need a kind of a prompt.

  403. I'll go first. I'll go ahead and tell you

  404. family. That's that's a given, like

  405. being a grandparent, man, there's nothing like it.

  406. Love it. We're we're actually expecting

  407. another one on the way any day now and it is going to be

  408. awesome. I love it.

  409. Just like sugar those kids up and send them home.

  410. It's incredible. It's awesome.

  411. But I'll tell you what I'm most likely to make into an idol.

  412. What good thing I'm most likely to make into a God thing?

  413. Ministry. Me being a pastor, I have to be

  414. very, very honest with myself about myself and go, God, would

  415. you show me have I taken this good thing that you have blessed

  416. me with and have I made it into an idol?

  417. Have I turned it into a God thing and I can at that point in

  418. time then I I had the same choice that you do.

  419. I can go on and pretend that I can hold on to this and ISM and

  420. then expect God to continue personally growing me into

  421. Christ likeness or I can acknowledge not.

  422. God's never going to bless my disobedience to his first law

  423. and commandment. So I need to put to death that

  424. lesser God. Here's what it means to put to

  425. death that lesser God. It means that I need to spend

  426. more time feeding the spirit in me and starving the flesh.

  427. Feed the spirit, starve the flesh.

  428. So whatever you wrote in that blank, what good thing are you

  429. most likely? Am I most likely to turn into a

  430. God thing? Same thing is true for you.

  431. Same choice is you feed the Spirit.

  432. Here's how we feed the Spirit. We spend time daily with God in

  433. his word. We spend time daily with God in

  434. prayer. We spend time daily with God

  435. confessing the things in our lives that are not in alignment

  436. with him. We seek to get plugged into a

  437. church, to become deeply rooted in a church, being involved in a

  438. core group of of other Christ followers.

  439. They're going to sharpen us and they're going to urge us on and

  440. encourage us in Christ likeness, the one or two people that we

  441. give absolute permission to, to call us out on our crap and go,

  442. hey, I love you and I know that you want to honor Jesus, but the

  443. way that you just said that doesn't do that.

  444. The decision that you're making doesn't lead to that.

  445. That's how we feed the Spirit and we starve the flesh.

  446. So this is where we lay in the plane this morning.

  447. This first commandment. This first commandment is not

  448. simply the application, is not simply stop worshipping false

  449. gods, stop worshipping man made idols.

  450. This first commandment is about this return to your deliverer.

  451. Return to your deliverer. And when you and I start to

  452. focus more in on the majesty and the glory and all the grace, the

  453. mercy and all that Jesus has done for us, I will make you

  454. this promise. Everything else pales in

  455. comparison that we sit there and go.

  456. All these other things that I were, that that I was leaning

  457. on, that I was counting on, that I was kind of propping myself up

  458. on there, there these false gods, these idols, they can't

  459. carry that weight. They were never my deliverer.

  460. They can't be my deliverer and they never can deliver me.

  461. But Jesus, you can. Jesus, you can.

  462. So really, our step of obedience this morning is really twofold

  463. #1 what Andisms exist in your life, what Andisms exist in your

  464. life? And then number 2, after

  465. acknowledging that Andism, confess that Andism as sin

  466. before God and ask a holy God. God, would you forgive me for

  467. putting this on par with you or maybe even a little bit above

  468. you in my life? It's not this message, this

  469. first commandment is not simply about stop worshipping false

  470. gods. It's about returning to your

  471. deliverer. So I'm going to pray.

  472. After we pray, we'll stand. We'll have an opportunity to

  473. sing one last time. And this would be an opportunity

  474. for you to come down and pray. If you want to come and pray and

  475. go, God, here I am. Bow before you in humility,

  476. confessing this and ISM in my life now.

  477. Would you help it to compare to pale in comparison to your

  478. glory, to your lordship? I promise you, if you want to be

  479. freed up this morning, confess the andism and turn to the

  480. Deliverer. God we love you and God we thank

  481. you for loving us. God, so many times we have

  482. turned away from you, God, maybe not intentionally, maybe we have

  483. drifted far away from you. God is so very easy for us to

  484. confuse the blessings that you have bestowed upon us, the good

  485. things that you have given us in life and turned them into God

  486. things. God, would you help us this

  487. morning to become very, very honest, gut level honest with

  488. ourselves, about ourselves so that we can rightly identify any

  489. and all and isms that exist within us.

  490. And thank God to be bold enough and obedient enough to bring

  491. that and ISM before your feet and to confess that and ISM as a

  492. sin. God, maybe this morning is a

  493. time to where you're calling us to a refocusing of our lives, of

  494. our hearts, our minds, our attention, our devotion, a

  495. rededication of sorts to where we are asking you, God, not only

  496. that you be superior to all other gods, but you be

  497. exclusive. Kind of pray that you would move

  498. through US and in US this morning and bring a change that

  499. only your Holy Spirit can bring. And it's your.

  500. In your name, I pray. Amen.
