  1. Welcome, Crossing Family. I wish I could be with you this

  2. weekend, but I'm preaching at our first Uncommon Conference in

  3. Florida. It would not be back in time for

  4. our Thursday services. And that means I need to find

  5. someone to help us on our 5050 journey, which I hope you're

  6. still on. I'd like to introduce you to

  7. Nate Ross. Nate Ross is the founder of

  8. Moments to Movements. His passion is connecting

  9. leaders like you to the creator, helping you breakthrough your

  10. growth barriers so that you can thrive in your unique calling.

  11. Having grown up in a pastor's home that served in churches

  12. ranging from the Midwest all the way to Las Vegas, he's had some

  13. unique opportunities to learn from some incredible leaders.

  14. Nate has served as a guidance counselor for a Christian

  15. university on boards of global nonprofits and it is local

  16. church in almost every role imaginable.

  17. Most recently, he served as a lead pastor in a Church of over

  18. 6000 people that was twice named one of the top 100 fastest

  19. Growing churches in America. On top of all of that, he's my

  20. friend and a world class encourager.

  21. Would you please give Nate Ross a warm crossing welcome?

  22. Get him, Nate. Amen.

  23. Boy crossing family, what an honor to be with you and every

  24. campus want to welcome you. And I met Clayton, your pastor,

  25. 23 years ago when I was his camp counselor at church camp.

  26. And he was a scrawny little kid. And no, actually he dominated

  27. all of his counselors in basketball.

  28. But 23 years ago I met him and we formed this friendship.

  29. And it was one. It's just been one of these joys

  30. of journeying. And here's the thing, I'm not

  31. really a spiritual father. I'm just a spiritual brother to

  32. him. And he's my Big Brother, right?

  33. Because Claytons, everybody's Big Brother, right?

  34. And but I love this church and I love what God is doing.

  35. And if this is your first time or if it is your first time in a

  36. long time, I want to welcome you.

  37. This is my first time in a long time.

  38. I was here in August for your uncommon conference.

  39. Anybody here? Any men in here, in this room

  40. show hands in your campus here? Any women try to break into that

  41. conference, right. You know, I mean, it is a

  42. happening deal. And it was great.

  43. My me and my dad got to be here and it was a joy.

  44. And and here's what I love. The reason why I'm here really

  45. is because God is using this church, the Crossing family, to

  46. help change the churches all across our country.

  47. That that's what was going on. Clayton, you saw it in the

  48. video. He was down in Florida as they

  49. kicked off their first uncommon conference.

  50. I grew up in Las Vegas and so the phrase I grew up with is

  51. what happens in Vegas, what stays in Vegas.

  52. Here's what I love about the crossing.

  53. What happens at the crossing doesn't stay at the Crossing,

  54. right. I love this about the Crossing.

  55. You guys are going. We're not just about here.

  56. We are about God's Kingdom. This is the invitation that you

  57. have. Maybe you came in today or maybe

  58. this is your thought. You're like, you know what?

  59. We're in the tri-state area. We're not really Chicago.

  60. We're not really Kansas City. We're not really Saint Louis.

  61. We're just us. And can I just let you know

  62. today, you being you is enough. Because here's what changes us.

  63. We don't change ourselves. It is the Kingdom of God that

  64. changes us. It is the Kingdom of God that

  65. floods into our life. And God says, I want to use the

  66. tri-state area to change this country.

  67. That's the invitation for United Day.

  68. That's why we talk about this series 50 for 50, because this

  69. is God's invitation for you. He's going, I want to meet you

  70. right where you are and I want to change you from the inside

  71. out. And I don't want to just change

  72. you. I want to change the community

  73. around you, and I want to invite you.

  74. If you haven't picked up one of these, it's just $10 out in the

  75. lobby. I've been following along the

  76. last two weeks. Clayton's sermon, if you didn't

  77. get to check it out last weekend on the word of God is

  78. phenomenal. But what happens is this.

  79. God begins to change our life the more we make His word in His

  80. ways, our priority. Matter of fact, some of you are

  81. going. You know what?

  82. I have been looking for more. And this is what I love.

  83. This is what I love that happens in the world.

  84. It's this. We want more in this church.

  85. We want more to go God, We want you to do more in our life.

  86. That's what this series is all about.

  87. But can I just let you know? This is what I found out.

  88. Crossing family. It's not just you that once

  89. more. Here's what I found out.

  90. 15,000,000 more people want more in this world.

  91. Do you know that? You're like, well, how'd you do

  92. that? Because I read what is the

  93. number one best selling book on Amazon right now?

  94. And you know what the number one best selling book on Amazon is

  95. right now? It's this book right here.

  96. It's called Atomic Habits, the number one book right now in the

  97. world. It's this.

  98. It's Atomic Habits and 15,000,000 people.

  99. It was the number one book back in 2021.

  100. It's the number one book again right now.

  101. And what the world is saying by buying this book, it's this.

  102. I need more and I don't have what I'm looking for, but I want

  103. more in my life. You may be here today going this

  104. can't be it. And what I love is this.

  105. I love when authors stumble upon this idea that they're like,

  106. scientifically, we've proven it. And God's like, oh, you did oh,

  107. that's so neat. Like these rhythms just showed

  108. up in the 21st century like they've never been here before.

  109. And I love James Clears. I don't know his faith journey,

  110. but I love his tagline. He says.

  111. This tiny changes remarkable results.

  112. What an idea. If you and I begin to make just

  113. some tiny changes in our life and we watch God do the

  114. remarkable, You know, this whole series talk about 50 for 50.

  115. It's about going pro. And today I want to talk about

  116. going pro. And this is the big idea.

  117. I just want to communicate. If you have your book, you want

  118. to write this down. It's just simply this.

  119. And this is what we're going to look at is this.

  120. Jesus is. The more that you and I are

  121. looking for Jesus is the more we're looking everywhere to make

  122. our marriage better. We're looking everywhere to make

  123. our job better. We're trying to get better at

  124. all these different things, but Jesus is the more that we're

  125. looking for. Here's what I love that James

  126. Clear says in his book. It's this.

  127. I don't know about you, but I grew up.

  128. You know, we talk about creating these new habits.

  129. I always heard this idea that it takes 21 days to form a new

  130. habit. I couldn't even make it to day

  131. three. So I just give up, right.

  132. How many people? You just don't even make a New

  133. Year's resolution. You're like, I don't feel

  134. guilty, right? If you don't make one, you don't

  135. feel guilty, right? Like that.

  136. That's, that's a little bit of my mantra.

  137. But here's the thing. James Clear says this.

  138. I love it. He says, actually it's not 21

  139. days. I'll play a little prices right

  140. with you. Can he did some research.

  141. Can anybody guess how long he says it takes nowadays to form a

  142. new habit? Anybody throw a number out, 47.

  143. Someone said $1.00 Bob, right? You know what I'm saying?

  144. Like, right, here's what James says.

  145. James says now with all sorts of scientific research, he says it

  146. takes 66 days to create a new habit.

  147. See, This is why God says if you want to change, you've got to

  148. show us every day into my word. And he uses this phrase in that

  149. book and this is what all this is about.

  150. It says. He calls it habit stacking.

  151. Last week Clayton talked about stacking our life on the word of

  152. God and obedience. Out of that, today I want to

  153. look at 2 disciplines that Jesus did.

  154. Because what happens is when you and I, GoPro, here's the thing.

  155. The game is going to change and Jesus is the game changer.

  156. I want us to look at Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  157. This is the verse that this whole series is built on.

  158. And what's amazing about this verse in Mark chapter 12, it's

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  159. this. Jesus changed the game.

  160. This is from Deuteronomy chapter 6, except Jesus starts adding

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  161. things to the scriptures. Now here's the deal.

  162. You and I don't get to change scripture.

  163. But guess who gets to change Scripture?

  164. Jesus does, right? Jesus is the one that changes.

  165. And this is what he says in Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  166. A law keeper, A Pharisee, came to him and they tried to trick

  167. Jesus. Just heads up real quick.

  168. If you're going to get in a theological argument with Jesus,

  169. you're going to lose, right? And listen what Jesus says in

  170. Mark chapter 12. He asked him what is the

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  171. greatest thing that we could give our life to?

  172. He says here it is the greatest law out of all 613 laws.

  173. It's this love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all

  174. of your soul and with all of your mind.

  175. What's interesting is this. Jesus adds this word from

  176. Deuteronomy chapter 6. It's not in Deuteronomy chapter

Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  177. 6, but this is what he knows. If your life is going to change,

  178. your mind is going to need to change and with all of your

  179. strength. The 2nd is this.

  180. He takes Leviticus and adds a verse to it.

  181. This he says. The 2nd is this.

  182. Love your neighbor as yourself and there is no commandment

  183. greater than these. The whole series is based on

  184. this. But if you want to GoPro, you

  185. GoPro based on commitments, because amateurs live by

  186. feelings. Some of you you're going, you

  187. know what? I don't know how God feels about

  188. me right now, or you know how you feel about God and you and

  189. God. Right now.

  190. I've got a good friend. Right now, he's in an argument

  191. with God and there's all sorts of feelings going on in his

  192. life. Some of you, you're going, this

  193. is what I feel about my neighbor.

  194. Some of you are here today and you don't even like yourself.

  195. And Jesus says it's the love of God that begins to change us and

  196. move us forward. Well, how do we do that?

  197. I want to look at 2 practices today that you're going to find

  198. in your booklet. And here's the thing.

  199. They are not what you think. That changes us.

  200. This is the ways of Jesus. It's not always the way we

  201. think. Matter of fact, the more I

  202. studied the the the ways of Jesus, here's what I found out.

  203. Here's how Jesus stayed in relationship with his father.

  204. There's three things he did. This is how he went pro.

  205. It was through three things. And it's what we do.

  206. It's this. He practiced his spiritual

  207. gifts. You were made with spiritual

  208. gifts when you get baptized, when you allow the Holy Spirit

  209. to come into you, He gifts you to be a blessing.

  210. You have gifts. You have a calling on your life.

  211. Jesus lived according to his spiritual gifts.

  212. Here's the other thing. He practiced spiritual

  213. disciplines. We're going to talk about two of

  214. them today. And then the third thing is

  215. this. He obeyed the promptings of the

  216. Holy Spirit in his life. Now you're looking at it going.

  217. I can do that. I know.

  218. Here's the good news. Jesus wants you to go pro today.

  219. He's like, I want you to live by your spiritual gifts.

  220. I want you to allow the spiritual disciplines to change

  221. your life. And I want you to obey the

  222. promptings of the Holy Spirit. So how how do we go pro?

  223. Two things. We're going to talk about two

  224. disciplines that Jesus did. It's this.

  225. He lived by these these disciplines.

  226. Fasting and Sabbath. Boy, I was really expecting

  227. everybody to stand on their feet and start cheering right there,

  228. right. You're like, no food and no

  229. work. That's how my life is going to

  230. change. Really.

  231. That's what I woke up for, is for you to tell me to go without

  232. food and don't work, and then everything's going to change.

  233. Just show of hands real quick. How many people right now?

  234. You're like, dude, I just need a day off.

  235. You're like, you know, Clayton, you got in at 2:30 this morning,

  236. right? Here you are.

  237. You're like, you know, maybe one of the most spiritual things you

  238. can do is take a nap during the sermon.

  239. All right? You have blessing to do that

  240. right now. Here's the thing.

  241. How many are like, I don't need a day, I need a vacation right

  242. now. You're like, man, I just need a

  243. vacation now. Here's the tip.

  244. I'm a parent of 311, eight and six.

  245. Do not confuse taking a vacation with going with your kids.

  246. You did not take a vacation. You took a trip, right?

  247. And when you get back, you will need a vacation from your trip,

  248. right? But you didn't.

  249. You didn't do a vacation. Now here's what I know about is

  250. in this room. And even if you're not a

  251. follower of Jesus, it's this. There's something inside you

  252. that goes, man, I need rest. See, that's what the Sabbath is

  253. all about. The Sabbath is from God, and

  254. it's kind of a Jewish term. It's in the 10 Commandments

  255. we'll talk about in a minute. It's about giving your soul the

  256. rest that you need. And fasting is about the

  257. presence of God. There's an epidemic.

  258. I was doing some study on this. You know what our leading

  259. epidemic is right now in America?

  260. And they're saying this is the leading epidemic across the

  261. world. Loneliness.

  262. How is it that we can be more connected than ever before and

  263. be more lonely than ever heard someone say it?

  264. This way? They said, here's what

  265. technology has done to us. Technology has made us become

  266. private when we're in public, and it's made us become public

  267. when we're in private. Could it be that our whole

  268. internal framework is messed up? And This is why we need fasting

  269. in the Sabbath today? We need a fresh presence of God.

  270. And we don't just need the presence of God, we need the

  271. rest of God in US. See, what I was saying is this.

  272. Jesus is the more that you and I are looking for.

  273. But here's how the more comes in, less is more.

  274. You're like, no, Nate More is more.

  275. You and I are getting all that we can in this world, and it's

  276. leaving us more broken, confused, frustrated, and angry

  277. than ever before. And Jesus invites us into this

  278. life. Matter of fact, you see Jesus

  279. practicing the spiritual discipline in Matthew chapter 4,

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  280. right after he gets baptized. Here's what the Spirit does in

  281. his life. Look what it says here in

  282. Matthew chapter 4, right after he gets baptized.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  283. Here's the first thing the Spirit did in his life, he said

  284. then. Jesus was led by the Spirit.

  285. There he is being obedient to the Spirit.

  286. OK, God, what you have for me, I'm going to do into the desert

  287. to be tempted by the devil, and I don't have enough time to

  288. unpack it. But what what you're going to

  289. find is this. Jesus is the true Israelite.

  290. He's going to do what Israel did not do in the 40 years of the

  291. wilderness. He's going to be the faithful

  292. one. He's going to be the one who

  293. doesn't give in to sin. He's going to be the one who's

  294. going to complete everything that God has for us.

  295. Listen exactly what happens in verse 2 after fasting 40 days

  296. and 40 nights. He was hungry.

  297. Thank you very much, Matthew. I got to believe that he was

  298. starving, right? After 40 days and 40 nights of

  299. fasting, he's hungry. This represents the 40 years of

  300. the Israelites. And then listen to what it says

  301. in verse 3. The tempter came to him and

  302. said, if you are the son of God, tell these stones to become

  303. bread. You know where Satan attacks

  304. Jesus? He attacks his feelings.

  305. He attacks his identity. Here's what's going to happen

  306. when you and I keep following Jesus, or if you become a

  307. follower of Jesus. Here's what you're going to have

  308. to do battle with. You're going to have to do

  309. battle with the voices that speak into your life.

  310. And here's the thing. There can only be 1 voice that

  311. you listen to students in here. I love seeing multi generation

  312. in here. You know there are voices that

  313. are competing for your identity. That's exactly where Satan goes.

  314. See This is why fasting is so important.

  315. It goes on to say this verse four.

  316. Then Jesus answered and it is written Man does not live on

  317. bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of

  318. God. Here's what I want us to get

  319. today. It's this Sometimes we think

  320. fasting is just about going without food, just doing without

  321. stuff. Can I just let you know Fasting

  322. is for feasting. Fasting is about you and I

  323. feasting on God's word. It's about feasting on the

  324. presence of God. I love how Jesus says this in

  325. Matthew chapter five. He says blessed are those who

  326. hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be

  327. filled. Jesus says Christianity isn't

  328. just about going. Oh, hope I didn't cuss this

  329. week. Oh, I cussed.

  330. Oh boy. You know, and it's just

  331. everything's about not messing up.

  332. No, Jesus says. It is about hungering and

  333. thirsting for righteousness, going after the things of God.

  334. See, when you would fast in biblical time, where the

  335. Israelites would grow up, here's what fasting went It meant this

  336. not just that you would go without food.

  337. It's that the time it took to prepare the food.

  338. If you were going to make bread, you had to make the dough.

  339. Then you had to, you know, bake the dough.

  340. Then you had to eat the dough, right?

  341. It was a whole couple hour long process.

  342. And here's the thing, Jesus was saying this when you would fast,

  343. it's not just that you would give up food, it's that you

  344. would replace that process with the presence of God.

  345. God, I'm not going to make, I'm not going to make food.

  346. I'm going to I'm going to devour and spend time with you.

  347. Yesterday I I got to meet a buddy from Jacksonville that I

  348. went to Bible college with in Pittsfield, IL, the epicenter of

  349. Illinois. Shout out Pike County campus.

  350. Right. And we went to the restaurant

  351. there and we're going, I'm, I'm in Pittsfield.

  352. I'm like, you know probably don't have anything to eat man.

  353. We we rolled into this restaurant called New Cheese and

  354. Bob, I got to meet Bob the owner.

  355. He's from Jersey because everybody leaves Jersey and goes

  356. to Pittsfield, IL right. Like that's just what you do.

  357. That's your retirement plan, right?

  358. And what was amazing is just we rolled it into this little hole

  359. in the wall and we come into some of the best Italian food we

  360. ever had. That is like hand rolled

  361. meatballs, homemade pizza, salt, like pasta sauce, all this other

  362. stuff. Now here's what was great.

  363. I rolled in IA, we paid the bill and we left.

  364. I didn't prepare the sauce. I didn't prepare the food.

  365. I didn't clean the dishes. I like peace, right?

  366. Thank you, Bob. But here's the deal.

  367. Somebody got up that morning and made that food, and somebody

  368. took the time to prepare everything that was going on and

  369. see during that when we fast, when you and I take time to

  370. fast, here's what we do. We replace all of that process

  371. and we take time to say, God, more than anything else in this

  372. world, I want your presence. I want your presence.

  373. Jesus says this in John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  374. The disciples are confused about this.

  375. See the ways of Jesus when you and I GoPro.

  376. It is not the way that we think. It is not the way that the world

  377. tells us to GoPro. It is a whole different world.

  378. In Jesus when he meets the woman at the well, the Disciples, they

  379. come back and Jesus here they go, Hey, give him some food and

  380. listen what Jesus says in John chapter four, he says, hey,

  381. listen to them, he says, but he said to them, I have food to eat

  382. that you know nothing about. And they're like, is there a new

  383. cheese here? Right.

  384. You know, like, like where, where?

  385. Like where'd you eat? Jesus.

  386. And listen what he says, My food, Jesus said, is to do the

  387. will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

  388. Here's what I love about the word will.

  389. I don't know about you. I I've asked this question a

  390. number of times in my life. What is God's will for my life?

  391. What is God's will? You know what that word will

  392. means. It means this, the heart of God.

  393. You know what Jesus's food was? To feast on the heart of God.

  394. God, the most important thing in my life is your heart and God.

  395. I will give up anything. God, I will give up food.

  396. I will give up this stuff because I want more than any

  397. other pleasure in this world, because I know it's not enough.

  398. Jesus knows this. God you are.

  399. The more I'm looking for in this world.

  400. My food, he said, is to do the will of Him who sent me and to

  401. finish his work. See, here's what happens when we

  402. feast on Him. He gives us our purpose.

  403. He gives us our work and we talk about going pro.

  404. Here's the thing. None of us GoPro alone.

  405. We only GoPro with Jesus. We only GoPro feasting on the

  406. presence of God. Too many times.

  407. This has been my mistake. It's this, I see God work in my

  408. life. Thank you God.

  409. And I feast on his goodness. And then this is what I do.

  410. Then I try it on my own. I feast and then I forget.

  411. It's like when I'd come home from Bible college and I tried

  412. to tell my parents I'm my own man.

  413. Can you please pay my college bill though?

  414. And mom do my laundry and I need $20 on the way back.

  415. But I'm my own man, right? We feast and then we forget.

  416. See, going pros when you and I, we feast on the presence of God.

  417. Two questions for us today. I want to encourage you, as you

  418. journey through to this one, to do an examination of your life

  419. this week and recognize. And ask yourself the question,

  420. What are you feasting on the most in your life?

  421. Maybe just ask God that question.

  422. God, would you reveal to me what am I feasting on the most?

  423. This morning I'll get on my iPhone.

  424. I don't know about you. I'll get my notification of what

  425. I spent my time on on my phone. Every Sunday morning, the

  426. conviction of the Holy Spirit comes over me.

  427. Did I play that much Candy Crush?

  428. I didn't think I did right. You know, here's what happens is

  429. I begin to see what my time has spent on this week.

  430. I want to invite you to ask that question.

  431. God, what am I feasting on in my life?

  432. And then here's the second question I want to ask because

  433. sometimes we get really convicted, like, oh man, I'm

  434. wasting time. I'm just, I'm just scrolling on

  435. social media. I've got all these other things

  436. that I'm just wasting my time on.

  437. The second question I want you to ask yourself this week is

  438. this, We know we talk about fasting is about feasting, but

  439. it's this. Do you believe that God would

  440. actually want to feast with you? Here's what I know.

  441. I never ask anybody The dinner that probably doesn't want to

  442. eat dinner with me. We just don't ask him.

  443. I don't feel like getting rejected today.

  444. Did you know, all throughout scripture, here's the narrative

  445. God telling his people I'm your God and I have all that you

  446. need. Will you come to the table and

  447. meet with me? Psalm 23, one of the most famous

  448. Psalms that we know, hidden back there beyond how he walks with

  449. us through the valley of the shadow of death.

  450. David says this, and God prepares the table before me in

  451. the presence of my what? Anybody remember my enemies?

  452. Did you know that when you and I are facing enemies in our life,

  453. Jesus is saying, here's how you're going to navigate this.

  454. You come and you feast on my presence.

  455. Do you believe that Jesus actually wants to spend time

  456. with you? See, this is what begins to

  457. change our life. And here's the challenge that

  458. you're going to find in this book.

  459. I love this. And if you have complaints,

  460. don't call me, call Clayton, right.

  461. You know what I'm saying? I didn't write this right, but

  462. this is what I love about the challenge of this book.

  463. It's this. Here's one of the challenges.

  464. We've got two challenges for you this week to GoPro.

  465. The first one is this that you would block out a 10 hour window

  466. this week Where? And I'm going to encourage you

  467. not to do it alone. Maybe with your family maybe

  468. with your life group. It's this that you would spend a

  469. 10 hour window fasting from food, if you're able.

  470. If physically you need to eat food within that window, by all

  471. means do it. But to spend 10 hours this week

  472. fasting, giving up food or along, and I would encourage

  473. giving up social media. And here's the deal.

  474. Make time to feast with Jesus. Make time somebody like.

  475. Well, Nate, I don't eat breakfast anyway.

  476. And I sleep from about 11:00 till eight.

  477. I'm done. I got.

  478. All right. Hey, if you don't do that, that

  479. doesn't count. All right?

  480. That didn't even count, right. I'm talking about giving up the

  481. food to say, God, we want you more than we want food.

  482. I remember 15 years ago, my wife Ruthie and I, we were in

  483. ministry in Bloomington, IL. We were doing youth ministry and

  484. I was just feeling released from God from that role.

  485. I didn't know what that meant. And there was another

  486. opportunity that came up to help another church and we were

  487. praying about it and we felt led to do it and but we were

  488. wrestling and do we go, we don't want to mess up, We don't want

  489. to mess up. And then like a last default

  490. idea was this, let's fast about it.

  491. So we committed, My wife and I, we committed to fast today, not

  492. even to talk about it. And then we'll come back

  493. together and we'll go, What did God say to you?

  494. Here's what he said to me. And so we spent a day fasting,

  495. and we came back. And here's what God told us it

  496. was. It was amazing.

  497. He told us the same thing. And this is what we came back.

  498. So did he tell you we should go? Yes or no?

  499. It's kind of like a love note in second grade.

  500. Just circle yes or no, Right. You know, Do we go?

  501. Do we not go? God, He told us the same thing.

  502. Here's what God's answer was to us.

  503. I want you to want me more than you want the answer.

  504. Yes or no. Do we go?

  505. Do we stay? I want you to want me more than

  506. you want your answer. Because, Nate, I am your answer.

  507. I am. The more that you're looking for

  508. your career, your calling, even if it's in ministry, Nate, it

  509. will not be enough for your soul.

  510. But I will. I am the more that you're

  511. looking for. We ended up moving, but that was

  512. a defining day for us. Too many times I made fasting a

  513. back burner emergency 911 rather than a priority to say God.

  514. More than anything else I'm doing, I need your presence.

  515. See what happens is when you and I begin to fast and we begin to

  516. go after the presence of God, here's what's going to happen.

  517. He's going to give us answers. He's going to speak to us.

  518. And it's not going to be what we expected, but it is going to be

  519. what you and I need. The number one thing we need is

  520. God's presence. This is why Sabbath is tied in

  521. with fasting in Isaiah chapter 58.

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  522. This is what you see God doing. He combines fasting and Sabbath.

  523. These are not two separate ideas.

  524. These are the way for God's people to live out the ways of

  525. God and and and if we go man, what?

  526. What is Sabbath? Here's the the the the most

  527. simple way I can summarize what the Sabbath is.

  528. The Sabbath is this. It allows our souls to rest.

  529. The Sabbath is in the 10 commandments.

  530. Also. This is what's interesting about

  531. the Sabbath. It's the longest, most explained

  532. piece of the 10 commandments. And you know why?

  533. Because we don't know how to rest, do we?

  534. Because as the song goes, everybody's working for the what

  535. we can, baby. Come on, come on.

  536. Crossing family like you act like you haven't heard that

  537. song. You're like, we're we're in the

  538. House of the Lord. We don't listen to that music.

  539. I'm calling you out. Right.

  540. Everybody's working for the weekend, right?

  541. And this is what we're saying. We want, we want rest.

  542. We're hungry for rest. Some of you say this, though.

  543. Maybe your parents said this when you grew up.

  544. I'll rest when I'm what? Dead.

  545. We ain't resting. Can I tell you the quickest way

  546. for you to burn out? Don't rest, just keep going.

  547. See, This is why Sabbath was so key.

  548. And you want to know why. See, the 10 Commandments wasn't

  549. something that God introduced so people could slap you on the

  550. hand with rulers for not keeping them.

  551. You know what it was when the Israelites left Egypt after 400

  552. years? They didn't know how to be

  553. human. You know how many days a week

  554. they work? Seven.

  555. There was no rest. There was no delight.

  556. See, This is why you and I struggle.

  557. Even pastors struggle with this idea.

  558. We become workaholics because here's what happens.

  559. It becomes our identity. Sabbath is a gift from God to

  560. say I want you to rest in me and don't you love it?

  561. I mean, it's one of those things I can write a sermon, but you

  562. know what? Only God can make it 70° in

  563. February when we're talking about Sabbath, you have no

  564. excuse to delight in the glory of God, right?

  565. To walk out and go. Only you can do that.

  566. God. And here's what He's inviting

  567. you and I today to do is this. It's just simply delight to

  568. make, time to delight. Maybe tonight you and your

  569. family, you and your small group, man, you have a little

  570. campfire in your backyard and you and you roast hot dogs and

  571. you come together. Yesterday I played pickleball

  572. and I only won one game, and I still delighted in it.

  573. Thank you very much, Corey, for humbling me game after game,

  574. right? But it's one of those things,

  575. man. It was just a delight.

  576. And here's what God's saying, it's this, He's going Work is

  577. not a curse. But here's what we need to

  578. understand. Our work is cursed.

  579. That's what happened in Genesis, he said, Adam, now you're going

  580. to work and when you work, you're going to have thorns in

  581. your work. And not only that, he says this,

  582. you are going to, you're going to work by the sweat of your

  583. what brow. It doesn't mean that you're

  584. going to have hard work. What he's telling Adam is this.

  585. You were going to plant and guess what farmers in this room,

  586. you're going to plant and does every season.

  587. Do you get the fruit and the reward of everything you

  588. planted? No.

  589. And by the sweat of your brow, you're going to take the corn in

  590. and go, Oh my goodness, I hope we can pay the bills this year.

  591. See, This is why we need rest. And we need rest for our souls.

  592. You know what I find amazing? It's this.

  593. This is why God wants to rearrange everything in our

  594. life. It's this.

  595. Did you realize that in the creation order, God, when he

  596. created on day six, he created man, and then on day seven, God.

  597. What he rested. Which means this The first thing

  598. that Adam experienced wasn't work.

  599. But what rest is rest. You know what the first thing

  600. Jesus said to the disciples after he rose went to the cross

  601. and rose from the dead in John chapter 20, verse 19?

    John 20:19

  602. You know what he said? The first thing he showed up,

  603. what he told him. Where did you all go?

  604. No, he didn't. But wouldn't that be amazing?

  605. Right? Like, like, I left, Right.

  606. They're locked in a room and they're and they're and they're

  607. afraid. And you know what he says?

  608. The first thing he says to him is this.

  609. He shows up, the doors locked. He walks behind the door.

  610. And this is what he says to him. He says peace be with you.

  611. You don't need to show a sign of hand or raise or anything.

  612. But I wonder how many people in this room and online today that

  613. is your deepest need. You need the peace of God and

  614. can I just encourage you with this.

  615. Rest is not found in your performance.

  616. Rest is not found in your personality.

  617. Rest is not found on how many connections you have or how much

  618. you have. Rest only comes from an empty

  619. tomb because this is what the creation order is and you know

  620. what new creation begins with. It begins with the resurrected

  621. Savior. See, your rest is not in you.

  622. Your rest is in Jesus. Matthew 12 says this Pharisees

  623. were arguing about the Sabbath because they saw Jesus and his

  624. disciples walking through and listen what happens in Matthew

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  625. chapter 12. It says at that time Jesus went

  626. throughout the grain fields on his on the Sabbath and the

  627. disciples were hungry and they begin to pick some heads of

  628. grain and eat them. You are not supposed to work at

  629. all. But the Pharisees, they lost the

  630. spirit of the commandment and said when the Pharisees saw this

  631. they said to him, look, your disciples are doing what is

  632. unlawful on the Sabbath you're making a sandwich.

  633. Verse 8. Jesus has to correct him and he

  634. ends it with this. For the Son of Man is Lord of

  635. the what Sabbath. You have no rest without Jesus.

  636. That mean all your problems are going to go away.

  637. But the rest that your soul needs, the rest that you are

  638. longing for, the more that you're looking for, is only

  639. found in Jesus. Here's the challenge for you and

  640. I this week that you're going to find.

  641. Here's the second challenge. Not only is it to find a 10 hour

  642. window of this week to fast, the second one is this.

  643. That you and I would pick a day to Sabbath.

  644. How long has it been since you turned your phone off?

  645. Some of you just already started.

  646. Like I can't. I can't.

  647. I can't. I can't do that.

  648. How long has it been? See, the rest of Jesus isn't a

  649. reward. It's a gift.

  650. It's a gift that changes your work.

  651. It's a gift that goes into your family.

  652. It's a gift that goes into your soul.

  653. This is why Jesus says this in Matthew 11.

  654. He knows you and I are weary. He knows you and I are.

  655. You are yearning for more. We're going after everything.

  656. And listen what he says. He says Come to me.

  657. He didn't say, Get your life together, he says.

  658. Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will

  659. give you rest. You don't need to earn it.

  660. Then he goes on to say this, take my yoke upon you and learn

  661. from the Walk with me, GoPro with me, for I am gentle and

  662. humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

  663. And he finishes by saying this, for my yoke is easy and my

  664. burden is light. Jesus is telling them in Matthew

  665. 11 and he's telling you and I today I am.

  666. The more that you're looking for crossing family this week, may

  667. you feast with Jesus, may you rest in Jesus, and may your

  668. souls find the more that you're looking for.

  669. It's been an honor to be with you this weekend.

  670. We're moving to a time of decision.

  671. You know, I wonder how many people in this room right here,

  672. or for those of you who are watching online, if you were to

  673. be honest with yourself in this moment, in this invitation time,

  674. If you were to be honest with even me, just for just for a

  675. moment of just complete transparency.

  676. But most importantly, if you were to be honest with the Lord,

  677. with the Holy Spirit, who's working inside of you, who's so

  678. actively around this place, I wonder how many of you would say

  679. you are you're tired. You would say that when you

  680. walked into this room or you walked into the online space,

  681. you would say, I am carrying some heavy burdens.

  682. Not only are you carrying the burdens, but they are all around

  683. you. You you didn't have enough hands

  684. to carry them all throughout this auditorium.

  685. They're they're sitting on the chairs underneath the view.

  686. They're sitting on the chair next to you.

  687. The burdens are so heavy and you are feeling so restless.

  688. But I want to remind you that last scripture, where it says

  689. where the rest comes from, where those burdens can be laid, and

  690. it all comes and spurs out of an intimate, personal relationship

  691. with Jesus Christ. He says, come to me, come to me,

  692. come to Jesus. Not me.

  693. Jesus says come to me and I will give you rest.

  694. And that, my friends, that is what this moment is all about.

  695. That's what this moment is designed for.

  696. For those of you not in this room, or for those of you in

  697. this room that don't have that relationship with Jesus, listen,

  698. you've never surrendered your life to him.

  699. You've never opened up your heart.

  700. And you just said, hey, I'm going to, I'm going to be

  701. listening to your teaching. I'm going to be listening to

  702. your commandments. I want to be all about you.

  703. Listen. The burden that you brought into

  704. this room, the restlessness that you have right now, is yours to

  705. carry. And you'll walk out of this

  706. room. You'll walk back into your life.

  707. And without a relationship with Jesus, you will continue to

  708. carry that. You will continue to feel

  709. weighted down. You will continue to feel tired.

  710. You will continue to feel weary. But that can change in a moment.

  711. It can change in this moment. As soon as you say with your

  712. whole life, with your whole heart.

  713. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and I want to give my

  714. life to Him. I want to trust in His name.

  715. I want to give my burdens to Him.

  716. He will take it. He will say yes.

  717. You are my child, and I will gladly take those burdens.

  718. I will gladly take the sins that you have and I will put them

  719. upon myself. When you come to this

  720. realization that God's way is the best way and you start

  721. walking out that relationship with him, there is something

  722. incredibly freeing in that moment.

  723. But I know that there's some, or maybe even a lot of you.

  724. You don't know what that feeling feels like.

  725. You don't know what that commitment looks like.

  726. More importantly, But today you can say before you leave, I want

  727. to commit my life to Christ. I want to go pro in my faith in

  728. just a little bit. The music's going to start

  729. playing. We're going to sing a couple of

  730. songs, and it's an opportunity for you as a person to declare

  731. that truth, that Jesus is your savior and you could accept him

  732. and you could walk in that relationship with him.

  733. And I'm going to be right up by the Baptistry.

  734. And I would love to help guide you and talk with you and pray

  735. with you and figure things out. What's your next step and how do

  736. you do that? You're like, I don't know what

  737. to pray. I don't know what to do.

  738. I don't know what to say. Listen, I don't have all the

  739. answers, but Jesus does. But I would love to help guide

  740. you to him. He is the more that you're

  741. looking for. And I'm praying that you would

  742. take that decision serious today before you leave.

  743. For those of you in this room and online right now, you have

  744. that relationship with Christ and you're still feeling tired.

  745. You're still feeling like you're carrying these heavy burdens.

  746. Those things don't go away. But I wonder if we got away from

  747. resting in the right places. That's what I love.

  748. Also about this time of invitation.

  749. It's a recentering. It's a time where we can just

  750. say, hey, I'm, I have God's word.

  751. It's right in front of me and I got to hear it.

  752. I had this opportunity to worship.

  753. Now I need to make sure I'm committed to his mission.

  754. And one of the ways you can do that in just a little bit.

  755. When the music starts for you, these steps are open as always.

  756. You hear this week in and week out, and I get it sometimes,

  757. just like that's not for me, that's somebody else.

  758. If I go forward, I think people are going to think I have all

  759. these problems, all these issues they're going to think a lot of.

  760. It's not about that. Here's what these steps are

  761. about in these moments. It's about this saying, hey,

  762. spirit, I want to make room. I want to make room for you to

  763. do whatever you want to, to do whatever you want to.

  764. I know that I need to rest in your presence.

  765. That's what this time is, is an opportunity for you to get down

  766. on your knees, For me to get down on my knees and to rest in

  767. His presence, to start feasting with Jesus.

  768. Maybe that moment starts right now for you and for me.

  769. If I had to share a conviction that I've been feeling over this

  770. last couple weeks. It's an interaction that I've

  771. been having with a lot of people or or or people that I love.

  772. And and even you guys as my church family, you'll you'll

  773. come up to me and this again when I say this, this is nothing

  774. that you're doing. This is everything that I'm

  775. doing. But a lot of people come up to

  776. me and they'll say, hey, it'll start by this.

  777. They'll say, hey, Corey, I know you're busy.

  778. But hey, hey, Corey, hey, I know you're.

  779. I know you're busy but I just need to.

  780. But you'll start off by saying that.

  781. And the reason that conviction is so strong on my heart is

  782. because, listen, I want people to fully see the Holy Spirit

  783. working in and through me. And I think that's what you

  784. want. You don't want someone coming up

  785. to you and just already saying, hey, I see you and you're always

  786. busy, you're always moving, You're always going to the next

  787. thing. And the reason that hurts and

  788. convicts me is because I believe when I do that.

  789. It's a reflection of me rushing through my moments with Jesus

  790. too. I feel like that's my

  791. personality. I'm going to rush through my

  792. Bible time. I'm going to rush through my

  793. prayer time. I got things to do rather than

  794. just resting and feasting with Jesus, that I want people to see

  795. the work of the Holy Spirit moving in and through me.

  796. And I think you want that too as Christians.

  797. So maybe this time is an invitation for you as a church

  798. family. As we continue to take steps to

  799. GoPro together, what would it look like?

  800. What would it look like to have everybody in this room?

  801. I know that's going to be hard. There's not enough room.

  802. Where am I going to go? How can I do it?

  803. How can I make my way there? I got things I got to get to.

  804. But what would it look like is as a church family?

  805. We just said we're going to rest in his presence.

  806. We're going to get down on our knees and we're going to put

  807. everything else on pause. I'm going to say, Jesus, we're

  808. going to make room for you in this moment to do whatever you

  809. want to. I hope you'll join me in this

  810. time. Let's stand to our feet as we

  811. move to this time of invitation to come forward to rest.

  812. Jesus, we love you, God, I thank you so much for a weekend such

  813. as this, for your word and for this message to hit in such a

  814. timely way. God, I pray that in this moment

  815. of response, in this moment of worship, you call us to to do

  816. something about what we just heard, not to just sit on it to

  817. put into action. And Lord, I pray right now a

  818. tangible step, a tangible way to start resting in you, to start

  819. feasting with you is to come in your presence to lower ourselves

  820. before you to cry out to you, to just say, Lord, I don't even

  821. know what you want me to do and let you answer for us.

  822. Spirit, would you just move in this time, pray all this in

  823. Jesus name. Amen.
