  1. Hi, this is John Ozanting, lead pastor of Evolved Church, and this is the Evolved Church Podcast.

  2. Thanks so much for tuning in.

  3. We hope that you find today's message encouraging and full of hope for wherever you're at.

  4. What a beautiful summer, kind of sitting in this Who is God series.

  5. And if uh if you're new to Evolve or if you were kind of like out of the room uh in the summer, which we're really fine with, uh I want to encourage you to just maybe go back through our audio podcast or even our YouTube channel and just revisit some of those messages.

  6. But really, uh there was six weeks um where as a team we attempted to understand the Father a little more, understand God in a deeper way, in a more honest and personal way.

  7. Um we said things like this we can't afford to have weak theology based solely on a few experiences we've had with God.

  8. We can't afford to have weak theology even based on experiences that other people have had with God.

  9. To think we know about God is vastly different than actually knowing Him.

  10. And so that was kind of the heartbeat of that series.

  11. Our best feeble human efforts cannot comprehend the complexities of all that our God is.

  12. I just don't think, I'm not sure we'll ever get there until we step into eternity and step into his presence.

  13. That all-powerful, always present, all-knowing.

  14. But the great thing is that we can know who he is because he has revealed himself to us through his son, through Jesus.

  15. Here's a beautiful and powerful truth that I want to just start as we begin a new series of talks today.

  16. God the Father has gone to the extreme to make himself known to us.

  17. Isn't that incredible?

  18. In all of our searching, in all of our questioning and asking, God reciprocates and says, I will go to the ends of the earth to make myself known to you.

  19. I will reveal the best of my nature and my character through the presence of God with skin on, my son, Jesus Christ.

  20. The most important way that God shows himself who he is is by revealing himself to us through Christ.

  21. And we get to read about that in the Bible.

  22. Even Jesus said these words if you had really known me, you would know who my father is.

  23. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.

  24. And Philip says, Lord, show us the Father.

  25. And Jesus responds, I've been with you all this time.

  26. And yet you still don't know who I am.

  27. Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.

  28. So why are you asking the Father to show up?

  29. The best of the Father is right in Christ.

  30. The fullness of God is revealed and made known through the person of Jesus.

  31. And Jesus was especially self-revealing through seven I am statements that he made about himself, specifically found in the Gospels of John.

  32. These descriptive statements explain the character of God and the nature of God all through these beautiful I am statements.

  33. We read one of them.

  34. To start our service today, you're going to be hearing uh Bennett preach on that in a few weeks.

  35. But these are the these aren't the only statements that Jesus made about himself, but they stand out in a powerful and unique way.

  36. So today we're going to be in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  37. If you brought a Bible with you, uh you could turn to John 6.

  38. We always have the scriptures on the screen, uh, and you can scan those or take pictures.

  39. But John 6, verse 35 simply says, Jesus replied, I am.

    John 6:35

  40. I am the bread of life.

  41. Bread uh gets a bad rap these days, right?

  42. It's certainly I apologize, give me a second.

  43. I'm a little distracted.

  44. Did you guys need something?

  45. What is that?

  46. Oh, that's my Uber Eats delivery.

  47. Perfect.

  48. Thanks, Mish.

  49. Uh, there it is.

  50. I uh I forgot.

  51. I ordered um some fresh bread from Cobb's bakery.

  52. Look at that.

  53. It's still warm.

  54. Man, some of the celiacs in the room are feeling a little triggered right now, a little uncomfortable.

  55. Yeah, I won't throw it at you, Megan.

  56. Uh I don't know, bread gets a bad rap these days.

  57. It really does.

  58. Um, but as for me, I I love it.

  59. You know, even this week, Tuesday night, Nicole and I went out for dinner with um Travis and Amy Hansen, some pastors from Grand Prairie, some new friends that we're making and starting to do life with.

  60. And uh, you know, we were at home getting ready to go out to eat.

  61. And Nicole looks at me because I'm in the kitchen snacking on a piece of bread.

  62. And I know what she's thinking.

  63. I know exactly what she's thinking.

  64. She's like, really?

  65. And correct me if I'm wrong, but do you need to eat bread right now?

  66. We're about to go out and have a meal, and I'm all like, I need to eat bread right now.

  67. I need, I need to, I need to just tear into it.

  68. Has anybody ever had the flax sourdough loaf from Cobb's Bakery?

  69. It's still warm.

  70. Does anybody want a piece?

  71. Come break bread with me.

  72. Blaine, get up here.

  73. Just tear off a piece.

  74. You need a piece to break bread with me.

  75. This is this biblical to break bread.

  76. Does anybody else want a bite of bread?

  77. Ryan, I'm just coming at you.

  78. Hopefully, there's no celiacs between me and you.

  79. Look at that.

  80. Does anybody else want bread?

  81. It's still warm.

  82. That's amazing.

  83. I'm chewing now.

  84. Oh, you want some bread?

  85. I love that.

  86. Welcome to Evolve.

  87. Next week we're taking communion together.

  88. It'll be a little more, it'll be a little more official, but for today, Jesus says in John 6, I'm the bread of life.

  89. Why?

  90. Why does that matter?

  91. Why does that reveal the nature and the character of God?

  92. You know, the versions and circumstances 2,000 years ago, bread was actually like a daily rhythm for people living in the Middle East.

  93. It was actually a healthy part of their daily diet.

  94. Particularly those working what we would call blue-collar jobs.

  95. They would eat daily bread.

  96. They would eat bread every day.

  97. If you worked with your hands like Jesus, or if you were a fisherman like Peter, your daily energy requirements were extremely high.

  98. Slow digesting carbohydrates were an important part in providing the energy that you needed.

  99. Most breads today are high glycemic carbs.

  100. They get digested rapidly.

  101. That's a flour issue.

  102. I'm not gonna get into that.

  103. I'm not gonna start any, you know, I'm not gonna start, I'm not gonna get into that.

  104. Two millennia ago, it was very different.

  105. They didn't have flour issues like we have today.

  106. Without modern day milling, back then the germ and the bran would be left intact.

  107. The grains were ground using stone stone mortar, uh, which would probably be a coarser flour, but lower glycemic bread, offering a sustained source of energy.

  108. When Jesus said, I am the bread of life, he lived in a historical context where bread was daily.

  109. It was a regular part of their diet.

  110. And the bread that they ate provided a sustained energy.

  111. Let that sink in for a minute.

  112. That's the kind of bread that Jesus ate.

  113. You know, during Jewish feasts and Passovers, he would eat bread that had no yeast in it.

  114. But aside from those holidays and feast days, the daily bread that Jesus ate would be made with yeast using a coarsely ground flour.

  115. And from the past through to today, this remains a daily practice and a custom in the Middle East.

  116. Daily bread.

  117. Maybe I should do like a sidebar or small group.

  118. We could talk about Western flour and the damage it's caused us.

  119. I even saw a video this week about Roundup, and maybe that's the issue.

  120. I don't know, but I'm not gonna get into that today.

  121. I do want to say this though.

  122. Psalm 104 says, wine to make them glad, oil to soothe their skin, and bread to give them strength.

  123. And Psalm 78 says, He rained down manna for them to eat, he gave them bread from heaven.

  124. And 105, they asked for meat, he sent them quail, he satisfied their hunger with bread from heaven.

  125. And then this narrative of the life of Jesus.

  126. It's beautiful, stunning to me that Jesus speaks about himself to the devil in this passage.

  127. During that time the devil came and said to Jesus, If you're the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.

  128. But Jesus said back, No.

  129. The scriptures say people do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

  130. And I was reading this a little bit tongue-in-cheek this week because Jesus says, I am the bread of life, and Scripture says Jesus is the word made flesh.

  131. And so Jesus says back to the enemy, I can't live on just bread alone, but on every word that comes from the Father.

  132. And so John 6, 35, I am the bread of life.

  133. Why does this matter?

  134. How do we see God?

  135. What do we understand about the nature and the character of God?

  136. Leon Morris, in his commentary on this passage, he says, the bread of which Jesus speaks is not like the manna, something they could pick up and eat.

  137. It's nothing less than himself.

  138. Jesus's I am is a solemnly emphatic statement, and in this context has overtones of divinity.

  139. There's a connection in what Jesus says, I am the bread of life, whispers back to ancient days where God showed up and said, I am.

  140. And here Jesus is echoing his Father.

  141. He's God with skin on, and he's saying, I am the bread of life.

  142. Overtones of divinity.

  143. This is the first of seven such emphatic statements in this gospel.

  144. Each one brings home an important aspect of the person and the ministry of Jesus.

  145. The bread of life is another way of linking life in the closest fashion with Christ.

  146. He himself is the food, the sustenance that nourishes spiritual life.

  147. It is only from the bread of life, Jesus, that we really obtain life.

  148. I am the bread of life.

  149. Jesus is our slow and steady at work within us, time-released, sustaining and energizing bread for our spiritual life, our spiritual work, our spiritual zeal.

  150. Jesus is our daily bread.

  151. So I want to unpack just three ideas from the passage where this verse, John 6.35, sits in the middle of.

  152. So we're going to be reading through John 6.22, right through to 51.

  153. And I just want to share three thoughts today before we close our service.

  154. Starting in verse 22.

  155. The next day the crowd that had stayed on the far shore saw that the disciples had taken the only boat, and they realized that Jesus had not gone with them.

  156. So this story sits just on the other side of Jesus and his disciples on the beach, ministering to crowds of people and performing a big miracle.

  157. He fed thousands of people.

  158. God did a miracle with loaves and fish.

  159. And so this story sits kind of right after this moment, just to give you a little bit of context.

  160. So all of a sudden, several boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the Lord had blessed the bread and the people had eaten.

  161. So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for Jesus.

  162. They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, Rabbi, when did you get here?

  163. And Jesus replied, I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.

  164. I've often thought, man, if I was a Jewish person growing up in the same time that Jesus lived and walked on earth, I would have found Jesus a little bit frustrating.

  165. Because here the disciples, this crowds of people are searching for this miracle man.

  166. And when they finally find him again, they're like, What happened to you?

  167. And he doesn't answer their question.

  168. Do you have anybody in your life when you ask them a question, they don't actually answer the question, but they say something completely unrelated?

  169. Some of you are like, that sums up married life, but uh, you know, I don't know.

  170. But um, but here's this classic Jesus.

  171. Rabbi, when did you get here?

  172. And he doesn't answer the question.

  173. He's like, You only you only want to hang with me because I did something for you.

  174. Essentially is what Jesus is saying.

  175. Verse 27, don't be so concerned about perishable things like food.

  176. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you.

  177. For God the Father has given me the seal of approval.

  178. And so my first thought today is why are you searching for Jesus?

  179. Are you searching for Jesus?

  180. And if you're in the room today and you've like aligned your life with Christ, maybe you call yourself a follower of Jesus or a Christian.

  181. And so you might even tune me out when I say that because you're like, I've already found him.

  182. I'm not I'm not searching for Jesus, I've got him.

  183. But I want to challenge you.

  184. Are you still looking for the risen Savior?

  185. Do you still have a daily value and priority to search for Christ, to look for him?

  186. Or maybe you're in the room today or watching from home and you've never made a decision to surrender your life to Christ.

  187. And that's why you're here.

  188. Is Jesus for me?

  189. You are searching.

  190. But to all of us, I would ask why?

  191. What's our motive?

  192. What's our motive for wanting to be near Jesus?

  193. My favorite meals are the ones where we're not rushed, we're not hurried, where we just sit and linger around a table.

  194. You know, one of my dad frustrations, I'm not gonna say their names because I'll have to pay them five bucks.

  195. This is a generic parenting statement, you know.

  196. In the ebb and flow of life, when we sit down and prepare a meal, sit at a table, there's like a little bit of like in me when like kids scarf food and then dash away.

  197. Why?

  198. Because I just I just want to stay.

  199. This is this is important moments.

  200. We hold a family value to sit around a table as many days as we can in a week and share, break bread together, have food together.

  201. And my favorite meals are where I'm just sitting and lingering and and I feel safe and I feel at peace, and nothing else matters in that moment.

  202. No phones at the table, no checking email, right?

  203. Anyone with me?

  204. I wonder if we approach Christ with that same kind of posture.

  205. Not rushed, just sit and linger in his presence.

  206. No other agenda.

  207. Nothing else matters.

  208. We feel safe, we're at peace.

  209. Far too often in my walk with Jesus, I approach him like the crowd, but in John chapter 6, there's a desperation because I need the master to do something for me.

    John 6 chapter mention

  210. Why are you searching for Jesus?

  211. What's your motive for wanting to be near him?

  212. Is it rooted in what Jesus can do for you, or is it found in the simplicity of just being with him?

  213. Nothing else.

  214. Do I rush through a meal for the nutrients, or do I linger at the table for the sheer enjoyment of tasting delicious bread?

  215. Do I just linger?

  216. Jesus' response in verse 26, he says, You've come looking for me because you saw God in my actions, but because I fed you, not sorry, not because you saw God in my actions, but because I fed you.

  217. I filled your stomachs and for free.

  218. Verse 27, don't waste your energy striving for perishable food like that.

  219. Work for the food that sticks with you, food that nourishes your tasting life, food the Son of Man provides.

  220. He and what he does are guaranteed by God the Father to last.

  221. I love Eugene Peterson's translation of that text, John 6, 26, 27.

  222. And it reminded me of songs we sing.

  223. I'm not here for blessings.

  224. Jesus, you don't owe me anything.

  225. More than anything, you can do, I just want you.

  226. Nothing else by Cody Carnes.

  227. I'm sorry when I've come with my agenda.

  228. I'm sorry when I forgot that you're enough.

  229. Take me back to where we started.

  230. I open up my heart to you.

  231. Take us back.

  232. Do you trust that Jesus is enough?

  233. Feast on the eternal nourishment and the lasting life that only Jesus can give.

  234. Come, come and eat.

  235. Come and eat from the bread of life.

  236. Moving on, verse 28.

  237. They replied, We want to perform God's works too.

  238. What should we do?

  239. Jesus told them, This is the only work God wants from you.

  240. Believe in the one that He sent.

  241. And they answered, Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you.

  242. Keep in mind, this is, I don't know, I don't think it's days.

  243. I think it's hours after Jesus took a couple of loaves and a few fish and fed thousands of people.

  244. And here they are, back at his feet, groveling for more.

  245. Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe.

  246. What can you do?

  247. After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness.

  248. The scriptures say Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.

  249. And Jesus said, I tell you the truth.

  250. Moses didn't give squat.

  251. I'm paraphrasing.

  252. My father did.

  253. I imagine this is Jesus' tone here, right?

  254. Moses didn't do anything.

  255. My father did it.

  256. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven.

  257. The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.

  258. And then they change the serve.

  259. Give us that bread every day.

  260. So here's my second thought.

  261. Jesus, as our daily bread, is a surrender to trust and not do things in our own strength.

  262. Verse 28, this this response, we want to perform God's works, what should we do?

  263. Actually, as I was studying this week, here's how I heard this people complaining.

  264. Fine then, you're not gonna make us more bread.

  265. We want to perform our own miracles, Jesus.

  266. If you won't make more bread for us, we'll take things into our own hands.

  267. Right?

  268. The tone shifts here, and the people are like, we want to do this too.

  269. Fine.

  270. You're not gonna do something for us?

  271. Show me a sign, or else at least give me the power to come up with my own sign.

  272. Come on, Jesus.

  273. And verse 30, they answered, Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you.

  274. The same attitude.

  275. What can you do for me, Jesus?

  276. I need you to do something for me.

  277. I know what I need, I know what's best for me.

  278. Come on, Jesus, meet my needs.

  279. Man, five for five last week was incredible, but can I highlight Kendra's story of believing God for a child?

  280. And that like vulnerable moment where she stood here in front of this room and shared about this exchange with the presence of God where she was like, God, I know my body, and he whispered back, Don't you think I know your body more than you do?

  281. I couldn't help but think of that this week as I was preparing.

  282. Jesus saying, Can you just trust that I know you better than you know you?

  283. This isn't about what you need from me.

  284. This is just about me.

  285. About me being the life that nourishes and sustains you.

  286. Get the urgent, whatever you think the urgent pressing need is, get that out of the way.

  287. Because Jesus, as our daily bread, is a surrender to trust.

  288. Trust him and not do things in our own strength.

  289. And Jesus said, This is the only work God wants from you.

  290. Believe in the one he sent.

  291. When you believe in me every day, when you choose me first, choose my presence, choose my power and my authority as your first and best surrender.

  292. Your first and best surrender every new day and throughout your day.

  293. Jesus says, I am the one who was sent by the Father to sustain you and give you life.

  294. Believe it.

  295. Trust in me.

  296. The Disney people laughed.

  297. Thank you.

  298. Trust in me.

  299. Just trust it.

  300. Yeah, but I need no.

  301. Just trust it.

  302. Believe.

  303. And then this beautiful response, and I and I picture, I'm so imaginative when I read the Bible.

  304. I picture them like, give us what we want, give us what we want, give us what we want.

  305. And Jesus being like, just believe in me.

  306. And then them going, Oh, give us that bread every day.

  307. Give us that.

  308. This isn't about what we think we need.

  309. This isn't about what you did in the past for our ancestors.

  310. This is about this moment and you nourishing and filling us the bread of heaven, the bread of life.

  311. Give us that bread every day.

  312. I want that to be my prayer.

  313. Father, give me the bread that you provide every day.

  314. When they said, give us that bread every day, they were suggesting that the bread of heaven needed to be given again and again.

  315. But Jesus insists, he who comes to me will never go hungry.

  316. So the hungry and thirsty person who comes to Jesus finds their hunger satisfied and their thirst quenched.

  317. This does not mean there's no need for continued dependence upon him, for continued feeding upon him.

  318. It does mean that there's no longer that core emptiness that the initial encounter with Jesus has met.

  319. What a beautiful unpacking by Carson in his paraphrase, in his commentary.

  320. Continued dependence, continually feeding on him.

  321. Why?

  322. Because he has filled up that core emptiness within me.

  323. Have you made room for Jesus to fill up that core emptiness within you?

  324. And here we read next, verse 35.

  325. Jesus says, I am the bread of life.

  326. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again.

  327. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

  328. But you haven't believed in me, even though you have seen me.

  329. However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.

  330. For I've come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.

  331. And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he's given me, and that I should raise them up on the last day.

  332. For it is my Father's will that all who see his son and believe in him should have eternal life.

  333. I will raise them up.

  334. I wonder what God's will is.

  335. That was a beautiful passage for you to come back to.

  336. But bread, the daily bread, you know, it was and still is such an incredible rhythm in the daily life of those living in the Middle East.

  337. And Jesus invites us to come and eat at his table and eat and eat again from his life, the bread of life.

  338. What happens when we don't eat every day?

  339. In a biological physical sense, what happens when we don't eat every day?

  340. The symptoms of malnutrition can present as pale cold skin, hollow cheeks and sunken eyes, dry and sparse hair, physical and mental disability, lack of appetite.

  341. I found that one interesting.

  342. My appetite goes away when I stop eating.

  343. Irritability and tiredness, lack of concentration, cold intolerance, muscle wasting, fat wasting, my wounds don't hear, heal, like poor wound healing, depression, reduced fertility, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing.

  344. These are medical symptoms of malnutrition.

  345. And as I was studying and preparing, I was like, I wonder if there's any spiritual parallel in that list.

  346. When we stop feasting and nourishing our spiritual life on Jesus, the bread of life, do we lose our spiritual appetite?

  347. Are we irritable and tired on a deep soul level?

  348. We can't focus or concentrate on the things of the spirit.

  349. The wounds from my past haven't experienced freedom and healing.

  350. My faith feels weak.

  351. I can't dream for tomorrow.

  352. Spiritual fertility is reduced.

  353. I lack the ability to rest, really rest, draw in, breathe deep the presence of God.

  354. On a deeply spiritual level, maybe some of us are spiritually malnourished today.

  355. And you've been wondering, why do I not desire the presence of God?

  356. Why do I not feel eager and excited about showing up at church or showing up with my small group?

  357. Or why have I stopped reading my Bible?

  358. Or why why am I irritable on a deep soul level?

  359. And why have I stopped dreaming?

  360. Perhaps it's time you started eating again.

  361. When you believe in him every day, when you choose him first every day, choose his presence, choose his authority, choose his power, choose his love, choose his new mercies every morning, and come under that.

  362. Surrender, resurrender day after day.

  363. Your first and best surrender every new day.

  364. Jesus says, I'm the one who was sent by the Father to sustain you and give you life.

  365. Trust me, believe me.

  366. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again.

  367. My third and final thought before we close familiarity will rob you of the gift of drawing near to Jesus.

  368. After Jesus' little mini sermonette about him being the bread of life, here's how the people respond.

  369. Verse 41.

  370. Then the people begin to murmur in disagreement because Jesus had said, I am the bread that came down from heaven.

  371. They said, Isn't this Jesus, the son of Joseph?

  372. We know his father and mother.

  373. How can he say, I came down from heaven?

  374. What is it you think you know about Jesus?

  375. What is it you've written off in your heart?

  376. Oh, I've heard that before, Pastor.

  377. I've got this.

  378. He's just, he's my buddy.

  379. He's Jesus.

  380. He's just Jesus.

  381. Familiarity will rob us of the gift of drawing near daily and finding nourishment and restorative healing by eating from the bread of life.

  382. Familiarity at its simplest is just veiled pride.

  383. That's what it is.

  384. It's just sin.

  385. And it will rob us of the gift of consuming Christ daily.

  386. I don't have to eat today.

  387. I'll be fine.

  388. Another way I could say that is I've got this, God.

  389. I don't need you today.

  390. And I'm not sure there's a more arrogant statement than that.

  391. Because most certainly there's an initial transformation that takes place when we choose to receive Christ.

  392. There's an incredible miracle that takes place.

  393. But faith is not a transaction.

  394. It's not that that happened to me, you know, on this date when I received Jesus.

  395. Our active, vibrant faith surrender is a daily commitment to choosing Christ above all else.

  396. And so how does Jesus respond to this familiarity in the crowd?

  397. It's just that's just Jesus.

  398. Jesus replied, Stop complaining.

  399. For no one can come to me unless the Father, who sent me, draws them to me.

  400. And at the last day I will raise them up.

  401. As it is written in the scriptures, they will all be taught by God.

  402. Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.

  403. Not that anyone has ever seen the Father.

  404. Only I, who was sent from God, have seen him.

  405. I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life.

  406. Yes, I am the bread of life.

  407. Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died.

  408. Shots fired.

  409. Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die.

  410. I'm the living bread that came down from heaven.

  411. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever.

  412. And this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.

  413. It's me, says Jesus.

  414. In the 1800s, Augustine of Hippo wrote this about this text.

  415. He said, When our Lord Jesus Christ, as we've heard in the gospel when it was read, had said that he was himself the bread that came down from heaven, the Jews murmured and said, Is not Jesus the Son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?

  416. How is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

  417. These Jews were far off from the bread of heaven and knew not how to hunger after it.

  418. They had the jaws of their heart languid.

  419. With open ears, they were deaf.

  420. They saw, but stood blind.

  421. This bread indeed requires the hunger of the inner man.

  422. And hence Jesus saith in another place, Blessed are they who hunger and who thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  423. Wherefore the Lord, about to give the Holy Spirit, said that himself was the bread that came down from heaven, exhorting us to believe on him.

  424. For to believe on him is to eat the living bread.

  425. He that believes eats.

  426. He's sated invisibly, because invisibly is he born again.

  427. A babe within, a new man within, where he's made new, there he's satisfied with food.

  428. I am the bread of life.

  429. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again.

  430. I am the living bread that came down from heaven.

  431. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever.

  432. And this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.

  433. Can I challenge you for today?

  434. And we'll let tomorrow take care of tomorrow.

  435. But can I challenge you for today?

  436. Draw deep, linger at the table of the Father's presence.

  437. Slow down.

  438. Remember that Jesus reveals who God is as an invitation to come, sit, taste and see.

  439. Hunger after his righteousness, thirst after his presence.

  440. And in doing so, we find him.

  441. Our bread of life.

  442. Our eternal life.

  443. Never hungry again.

  444. Thank you, Father.

  445. Can we pray?

  446. Jesus, all through the Bible, there's a lot of profound and incredible things that you say.

  447. Some of those things we've learned and kind of understand, some of those things we haven't fully grasped yet.

  448. But today we hear we hear your voice clear when you say, I am the bread of life.

  449. Come and eat.

  450. And like the daily bread that you ate every day with your family, with your friends, Jesus.

  451. Beautiful, healthy bread that provides sustained nourishment and sustained life and sustained energy for your physical body, we see clearly today that that's who you long to be for us.

  452. We see clearly today a picture of the Father every day restoring, nourishing, and energizing our soul.

  453. That's what we desire.

  454. And yet, in the middle of life, in the middle of preparing for new seasons or ending previous ones, or rushing forward with dreams and visions and goals and to-do lists, we can still forget to slow down and sit at the table, sit at your feet, and be nourished and restored and revitalized and re-energized by the gift of you, our Savior, our King, our bread of life.

  455. So bring us back to the table.

  456. Bring us back to the table, unhurried, no agenda, not because we need something from you, but just because we want more of you.

  457. More of your presence, more of your wisdom, more of the grace and the mercy that you bring freely.

  458. Thank you, Father.

  459. Thank you.

  460. Just as we close in this moment of quiet surrender, quiet remembering.

  461. With eyes closed, can you just like whatever's happening in your heart, just take it one step, maybe a little bit further, one step deeper.

  462. What's the Spirit whispering to you in the room today?

  463. What do you sense God saying?

  464. Those of you watching from home, watching online.

  465. What are you sensing?

  466. Even as we've slowed down this morning to gather together.

  467. And maybe you're in this room or watching from somewhere today, and you've never made the decision to stop and surrender to the bread of life.

  468. You've looked a lot of places to find a sense of energy or nourishment or strength or purpose, but you've never surrendered your life to Jesus.

  469. And I think it's pretty profound that Jesus says, I offer my life so that you may live.

  470. I offer my life so that you can find yours in me.

  471. And so for some watching today, for some in the room, I say, hey, come alive.

  472. Come alive in freedom.

  473. Come alive in purpose.

  474. Come alive as you surrender your life to the King of Kings, to Jesus.

  475. In a moment, I would like us all to pray a simple and beautiful prayer of surrender.

  476. But for some, you identify most with that sort of familiar, I've got this, I've been trying to do it on my own strength.

  477. And you feel the whisper of the Spirit saying, Enough is enough.

  478. Come under my authority, come under my leadership, come under my lordship, come under my grace, come under my forgiveness, come under my purpose, the life that I've prepared for you.

  479. Slow down, sit down, and eat at the table the bread of life.

  480. If that's you today, I want you to pray with me and all those gathered here as we pray out loud together.

  481. Just repeat after me.

  482. Dear God, thank you that you sent Jesus to show us and to show me a clear picture of you.

  483. Today I choose to surrender my life to Jesus, every part.

  484. I come under your authority.

  485. I ask for your forgiveness.

  486. I ask that you would fill me with your spirit, with your love and mercy.

  487. Today and every day, I choose you, Jesus, as my first and best surrender.

  488. In Jesus' name I pray.

  489. Amen.
