Luke The Orderly Account of Truth - Why Do You Call Me Lord - Luke 6:46-49

All right, today is Easter. Rightohoo, It's awesome. It is super

awesome. It's Easter, which is also can be referred to as Resurrection Sunday,

which is where we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. And

if you don't know what that is, let me give you a little recap.

Okay, what's going on, Why we're celebrating, why you're even here

on a Sunday. This Jesus person that we're talking about, Jesus, the

Son of God, came down from heaven, took on flesh, was born

of the Virgin Mary, grew up and lived a perfect sinless life. He

went on to be rejected by his own people that he came to to the

extent that he was brutally beaten, tortured, and eventually murdered on a cross.

When he died on that cross, he paid the price for our sins

by taking the wrath of God that was due our sin on himself. Jesus

then died and was laid in a tomb, but then three days later rose

again on Sunday, and that is what we're here to celebrate. He rose

again, not just showing that he can. He's a show off with miracles,

but he showed that his victory over sin and death was sure. That

Jesus had now made a way for us to be reconciled to God. Jesus

had accomplished our salvation and has accomplished our salvation. He has freed us from

sin and promised not only new life, but eternal life for everyone who believes

in him. We read in Romans ten nine through twelve. If you declare

with your mouth Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised

him from the dead, you will be saved. Amen. For it is

with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your

mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, anyone

who believes in Him will never be put to shame, for there is no

difference between you and gentile. The same Lord is Lord of all, and

richly blesses all who call on Him. For everyone who calls on the name

of the Lord will be saved. This is good news, that is the

gospel. And my hope for anyone today who has not put their faith in

Jesus is that you will see the love of God in the person of Jesus

Christ and repent and believe in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins and receive

eternal life from him. Now, the reason I'm putting all of this up

front, there's a reason for it. Right, You're all right, we

can go home now, right. That sounds about right. The reason that

I'm putting all of this upfront is because, unlike your traditional Easter resurrection story,

we're going to be looking at a different story in the Bible. And

the story that we're going to be looking at is where Jesus has been preaching

a message to his disciples specifically, and at the very end of his message,

he has a question. And today we're going to be looking at that

question. Okay, you guys with me? Yeah, awesome. So today

we're going to be looking at this question that Jesus has for his disciples.

And that question that Jesus asked was why do you call me Lord Lord and

not do what I say? Why do you call me Lord Lord and not

do what I say? Happy Easter everyone. So what I'm going to do

so I'm gonna read our text that we're going over today, pray, and

then we're going to jump into it, breaking it down with one another.

And I believe, as we incline our hearts, as we've just worshiped,

that God's already preparing our hearts for the word that He has for us today.

So if you would please turn with me to Luke chapter six, we're

gonna be looking at verses forty six through forty nine. If you don't have

a Bible of your own, we do have some of the back and we

do encourage you to go grab one so that you can follow along with us.

That's Luke chapter six, Versus forty six through forty nine. It reads,

why do you call me lord, Lord? And do not do what

I say? As for everyone who comes to me and here's my words and

puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They're

like a man building a house, dug down deep and laid the foundation on

rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house, but could

not shake it because it was built well. But the one who hears my

words it does not put them into practice, is like a man who built

a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrents struck that

house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete. This is God's word.

Lord, we love you when we thank you that we get to come and

celebrate the greatest event in history. Lor God, and I asked that as

we work through this text, your word that is alive and active, that

it would start to pierce our hearts in such a way that when we leave

these doors, that we are no longer the same r God, either if

we've already called on your name or have not called on your name or God.

I asked that this would be the opportunity for us to grow, to

come to know you, or to grow into your image further. So,

Lord God, I just asks for ready heart's inclined ears, that we don't

tune you out, but that we hear the words you have for us.

Today we give you this time in Jesus name. Everyone said amen. All

right. So if you're taking notes, today's message is titled why do you

call Me Lord? Why do you call me Lord? Now? For some

time we have been going through a series titled Luke The Orderly Account of Truth.

And in this series we've been going verse by verse through the Gospel of

Luke, and Luke tells us his purpose for writing this gospel account at the

beginning of his gospel. Let's take a look at that many have undertaken to

draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just

as they were handed down to us by those who were from the first eye

witnesses and servants of the Word. With this in mind, since I myself

have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly

account for you, most Excellenciophulus, so that you may know the certainty of

the things you have been taught. So Luke has written this orderly account so

that those who would read it would have certainty concerning the things that have been

taught about Jesus and where we find ourselves now where we find ourselves in Luke.

We've been going through this for months at this point, but we've been

breaking down a message that Jesus himself preached. In this message, Jesus has

been teaching his disciples many different things, like what it means to be truly

blessed in contrast to what the world would call blessed. Jesus tells his disciples

to love their enemies and to do good to those who hate them, to

be kind to the ungrateful and the wicked, just like our heavenly Father is.

That we are to do unto others as we would have them do to

us. That we are to be merciful as God is merciful. He tells

them to deal with the sin in their own life before trying to deal with

the sin and others. Amen. He tells them to judge and show forgiveness

as they would want done to them. And last week we looked at the

portion where Jesus says that a tree is known by its fruit, that if

they want to know whether they are a good tree or a bad tree,

that is a good person or a bad person, or what's going on internally,

to look at the fruit in their life, and that what comes out

of your mouth reflects what is stored up in your heart. It was a

pretty heavy message last week, at least for me. We're really doing some

examination of what's going on in the inside by looking on what's going out and

what's coming out of our mouth. So after all of this we get to

the last portion of Jesus's message that after Jesus has got done teaching them how

they are to live and then telling them to look at the fruit in their

lives. Jesus asked them a brutal, yet honest and fair question. He

says, why do you call me lord? Lord and not do what I

say? So let's start with our first verse in our text. If you're

taking notes, write this down. Jesus has a question for you. Let's

look our texts verse forty six. Why do you call me lord Lord and

not do what I say? Jesus has just told his disciples how they are

to live, and now follows it up with if you're going to follow me,

if you're going to call me your lord, how could you then go

and do nothing? How could you then not go do all the things that

I've just told you to do. It's quiet and in here, and the

people in the time of Jesus would have been well acquainted with the realities of

lords and kings. If we look at a quick definition just for our own

sake, the definition of a lord is one having power and authority over others,

more specifically, a ruler by hereditary right or pre eminence, to whom

service and obedience are due. So a lord is someone whom obedience and service

are due. It is their right that everyone who is under their authority,

serve and obey them. Now, Jesus asks, how can you call me

lord and then not obey me. What Jesus is getting at to call Jesus

lord means nothing if you don't obey him now. I want to clarify what

I'm saying, so that's not misunderstood. If you don't obeit, obey Jesus

right now, that does not nullify his lordship. I'm gonna say that again.

If you don't obey Jesus right now, that does not nullify his lordship.

When we confess that Jesus is lord, we are not confessing that Jesus

is lord of just me. We are recognizing the fact that Jesus is lord

of all that. When Jesus was raised from the grave and ascended into heaven,

he was given all authority, all power in all the universe, and

was given the name that is above all names, King of kings, Lord

of lords. And if you don't believe me, let's look at scripture.

Let's see what it says Matthew twenty eight eighteen. Then Jesus came to them

and said, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me,

we see kind of a fuller picture of this, of Jesus's life and

work and his status and Philippians two five through eleven, in your relationships with

one another, or have the same mindset as Christ. Jesus, who,

being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be

used to his own advantage. Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the

very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness, and being found

in appearance as a man. He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death,

even death on a cross. Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and

gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of

Jesus, every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue acknowledged that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God

the Father. That is that regardless if you call Jesus lord. Now there

is a day where every knee will bow and every tongue will acknowledge that Jesus

is Lord. And when he returns on that day, there's going to be

no mistaking who he is. It's like a couple peaks at what that's going

to look like Revelation seventeen fourteen. They will wage war against the Lamb,

that is, all God's enemies, but the Lamb will triumph over them.

Why because he is the Or. He is Lord of lords and King of

kings, and with him will be his called chosen and faithful followers. One

more picture, Revelation nineteen sixteen. This is hardcore. On his robe and

on his thigh he has this name written, King of Kings and Lord of

lords, hardcore. Jesus is Lord over everything. This is a fact.

But before that time comes for those of us who have put our faith and

hope in the Lord Jesus and called on his name, Jesus is asking a

sobering question. The question is coming off of what we looked at last week,

where Jesus was giving them a diagnostic tool for checking the fruit of their

lives, telling them to examine and be able to look at the contents of

their hearts. And now Jesus is making it clear as day if you call

me Lord, the truth of that fact will be revealed by your obedience,

that is, putting Jesus's words into practice. Jesus then gives them an illustration,

and we read on in our last three verses. Back in our Luke

text, verses forty seven thre nine. As for everyone who comes to me

and here is my words and puts them into practice, I will show you

what they are like. They are like a man building a house who dug

down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the

torrent struck that house, but could not shake it because it was built well.

But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice,

it's like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.

The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was

complete. Jesus is showing us two examples here, those who hear his words

and put them into practice, and those who hear and do nothing. And

Jesus contrasts these with an illustration of a man building with a foundation and a

man building without a foundation. The man who puts Jesus's words into practice is

like a man with a firm foundation. When the waters rose, his house

stood firm. The man who puts Jesus' words, the man who does not

put Jesus's words into practice, like a man who builds just on the ground

without a foundation, and when the torrent came, it completely destroyed that house.

What does this mean? What it means that the structural integrity of your

home means nothing. If you don't have a good foundation. You could build

the most amazing, beautiful, strong looking house, but if he doesn't have

a good foundation, it will be swiftly and utterly destroyed when the torrent breaks

out against it. What Jesus is talking about is your life. If you

call Jesus Lord, but don't obey him as lord, you are building your

life with out a foundation. You confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord,

but then you go live as if your job is lord, or your

wife is lord, or your hobby is lord, or your kids are lord.

And no matter how great a life you lead, if it doesn't have

a good foundation, it will come crashing down when the storm breaks out.

And yes, this can refer to the trials that we're going to go through

in this life, but Jesus is pointing beyond the circumstances of our life and

telling us to look and consider our eternity. There is a torrent coming,

and Romans too describes it for us. Let's look at it. But because

of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself.

For the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed,

repay each person according to what they have done. To those who,

by persistence in doing good, seek glory, honor, and immortality, he

will give eternal life. But for those who are self seeking and who reject

the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will

be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil. First for the

Jew, then for the gentile, and that's just everyone else. But for

glory or but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good.

First for the Jew, then for the gentile. The torrent that is coming

is the wrath. Do your sin, And if you if you claim Christ

as Lord by lip service only, you can be sure that you will be

swept awi or swept away by that torrent. But for everyone who truly looks

to Christ as Lord and repents and leaves, they will be saved. Why

because that wrath will have been taken on Christ at the cross instead of on

you. That's the good news now, what Jesus is saying is build your

life on me. Follow me. I'm telling you where to go now for

actually follow me, which is what Do what I said. Obey me and

find safety and rest for your soul. Lest you fool yourself into thinking you

are safe and secure, but then are swiftly swept away in the end.

Now, it needs to be said, because we're having this kind of conversation

about obedience and Jesus, that we are saved by faith alone. Amen,

we are saved by faith alone, not by works. There's nothing we can

do to save ourselves. That needs to be clear. But what Jesus is

getting at is that we are saved by faith alone, but not by a

faith that is alone. Okay, what do I mean? Well, James

has a lot to say about the subjects. So we're gonna look at two

different places that kind of fill in the picture for us. We read in

James one, do not merely listen to the Word and sods, so deceive

yourselves. Do what it says. There you go. Anyone who listens to

the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at

his face in a mirror, and after looking at himself goes away and immediately

forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that

gives freedom and continues in it, not forgetting what they have heard, but

doing it, they will be blessed in what they do. James doesn't want

people deceived into thinking that just hearing and agreeing with the truth spoken changes anything.

We can hear the truth spoken, so we can say the right things.

We're like, yeah, that sounds good. But what is being said

is that our faith is going to be shown by our works. That is

the fruit of our faith. Is a life lived by faithful obedience. That

is the fruit of our faith. It is not our faith, it is

the fruit of our faith. It's what comes out of having faith. So

if you have faith, it will be shown by how that faith moves you

to obey the Lord who saved you. So look another place in James a

little bit longer. He's gonna put it right there, plain for us.

What good is it, my brothers and sisters. If someone claims to have

faith but has no deeds, can such say faith save them? That's what

he's trying to ask. Here, can the faith that has nothing to show

for it can that faith save them. Suppose a brother or a sister is

without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, go

in peace, keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about their physical

needs, what good is it? It's a reasonable question. In the same

way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is

dead. But someone will say, you have faith, I have deeds.

Show me your faith without deeds, and I'll show you my faith by my

deeds. You believe that there is one God good. Even the demons believe

that. And shudder, you foolish person. Do you want evidence that faith

without deeds is youthless or useless? Was not? Our father Abraham considered righteous

for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar. You

see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was

made complete by what he did, and the scripture was fulfilled. That says

Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he

was called God's friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what

they do and not by faith alone. Again, what's being talked about here

is not the justification of oneself. That's by faith alone. But how do

we justify saying we have faith in the same way. Was not even Rahab

the prostitute, considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the

spies and sent them off in a different direction. This is his point.

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

James is saying, true saving faith is recognized by the fruit, by

the works that come out of it, just like a good tree is recognized

by its good fruit. Now here's the deal. You can get mad at

me for this message, all right, that's fine, get mad at me,

But they're not my words. I'm just reading what it says. What

we're saying is, if you want to check the pulse on the faith that

you claim to have, look and see if the fruit of obedience is present

in your life. Again, we are justified by faith alone, but not

by faith that is alone. And the other side of that is just pure

obedience won't save you either. I already covered that nothing you do can save

you. You must trust and believe and look to Christ in his accomplished work

for your salvation. And when you truly do that, your life, even

if it is a little bit at first, even if it's slow and gradual,

it will be marked by the fruit of obedience to Jesus, that is,

humble submission to living out the life and walking in the pattern that Christ

has laid out for his people. And like we saw last week, this

is all a matter of the heart, and Jesus is just trying to get

to the heart of the matter. He wants us to look at our lives

and be honest with ourselves so that we are not deceiving ourselves. So we're

not kidding ourselves or fooling ourselves. Even Christians do that. We're not exempt

of that. So Jesus just saying wake up. That is, if we

were to look at our lives, who do we follow? So Jesus has

been getting at this whole time. If you follow the Father, guess who

you'll look like the Father. If you follow the hypocrite, guess what you're

gonna look like the hypocrite. If it's Jesus, then that will show.

If it's the If we follow worldly pleasure, that's gonna show. But for

those of us who have truly put our faith in Jesus, we will walk

in the new freedom in life that has been laid out for us, not

perfectly, but gradually it will happen. We'll be able to see that fruit

just like fruit on a tree. Right you don't wake up one day You're

like, this fruit, I can eat it right now, You're like,

I'll still have to wait six months so I can do anything with that.

We need to remember that our shortcomings are met by His grace, but it

is not grace that we intentionally abuse. It's look at Romans six fifteen through

twenty three. What then are we to sin? Because we are not under

law but under grace by no means? Do you not know that if you

present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom

you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience,

which leads to righteousness. But thanks be to God, this is one

of the dopest verses ever. Okay, I get ready, But thanks be

to God who that you, who were once slaves of sin, have become

obedient from where the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,

and having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

I'm speaking in human terms. He's saying, I'm just using a human analogy

because of your natural limitations. Thank you, Paul, for just as you

once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, leading to more

lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification,

which is what it's bearing fruit in your life to look more and more like

Christ. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard

to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things

of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves

of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification, and its end is

what eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free

gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. He's

saying, we are slaves of the one we obey, and so if we

still obey sin as our lord, how can we call Christ our lord?

The message is obviously going to reveal those areas that have yet to yield obedience

to Christ, where we've maybe even still holding onto our old manner and way

of life. This is not a time for grieving. Okay. I know

you're like, Wow, Sunday, this is special Easter Sunday. Right,

this is not a time for grieving. And I'll tell you why. This

is an opportunity for us to hear the plain, straightforward call of our Lord

Jesus, to come closer to him, to set us right, to see

things clearly. It is by his mercy that he would show you the status

of your heart, and by his grace that he would also provide you the

remedy. And I want to say this because if you'd call yourself, if

you've called yourself a Christian, that is a follower of Jesus, or maybe

you've professed him his lord, and you feel like you found the Christian life

lacking, Like I tried the Christian thing didn't seem like all that much.

Well that I need to challenge you to realize that it's not this life that

is lacking, but you're in action in this life because a lot of people

have tried Jesus without doing anything that he said you don't try Jesus. I

would hardly call my life a life if I never got out of bed.

Jesus is telling us wake up, get out of bed, and start to

live out the life that I've called you to. That's what he's saying.

You have new life, so live it right. We hear obey, and

we're like, there's just things we gotta do. It's not what he's saying.

He's saying, you have risen from the dead. Now walk out of

here, go do something. But you're not left to wondering what that thing

is. He's laid it out for you. He's called us to eternal life.

But we shouldn't claim to have it if we never walk in it.

So if Jesus is our lord, we will obey him as our lord.

John ten twenty seven. My sheep, this is Jesus speaking my sheep.

Listen to my voice. I know them, and they follow me. He's

a good shepherd, right. He says this way sheep bees, and all

the sheeps are like, okay, that's what we do. Sheep beaes trademark.

I don't know that's a word. Now and again, I do hope

that you are hearing his voice right now. Even if this is beating you

up, it is not meant to just beat you down, but to call

you up, call you up out of your grain to start to live out

the new life that Christ has given you. If you've put your faith in

Jesus, he's saying get out of there, come up. He's not beating

you down. He's encouraging you. Get up. Put it into action.

Because here's the deal. We can be confident when the most famous verse in

the Bible says this, let's look at it John three sixteen. For God

still loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever

believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Great confidence, Well,

I believe, I believe, then this is a sure promise. Believe

in Christ, and you will not perish but have eternal life. But if

you want to know if you've received this life, well, let we need

to keep reading. When need to look a couple verses down John three thirty

six. Whoever believes in the Sun has eternal life. But whoever rejects the

Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him. And your

Bible might say, whoever does not obey the Sun shall not see life.

The rejection of the Sun is one of disbelief and disobedience, just as faith

produces obedience. Unbelief, believe it or not, produces disobedience. We need

to look at our life and look at what foundation we've been building on.

Is your house built in such a way as to stand firm against the torrent?

If you were to examine your life right now, is it ready or

though being a very nice house, is it ready to fall any minute?

I need the band to come up, please and thank you. Jesus isn't

calling us to anything less than what he himself has already set for us as

an example. You're like, Okay, well, he's Jesus right. That

seems a little unfair. We've already seen that he has humbled himself by becoming

obedient, obedient to the point of death and even death on a cross.

Honestly, I don't think that's me. I don't know about that. Lord's

still working on that area in my life to be that obedient. Thank you

Jesus. For Jesus that is that his obedience led to our salvation. Hebrews

eight to nine says this son, though he was, he learned obedience from

what he suffered, and once made perfect in the sense of accomplishing what he

was sent to do. He became the source of eternal salvation. For what

all who obey him. That Jesus, the Son of God was willingly obedient

to God the Father as to make a way for us to be reconciled to

God. He did that for us to be reconciled to Him. And Jesus

has asked this question today not as a scare tactic, but as a warning,

not just to scare you to be scared. What good does that do?

But it's a real warning. We see in Matthew there's a parallel verse,

some verses that kind of parallel, the same verbiage that Jesus uses.

We're going to look at that. It's one of the most sobering verses in

all of scripture. Matthew seven says, not everyone who says to me,

Lord Lord, will enter the kingdom of Heaven, but only the one who

does the will of my Father, who is in heaven. Many will say

to me on that day, Lord Lord, did we not prophesy in your

name, and in your name drive out demons, and in your name perform

many miracles? Then I'll tell them plainly, I never knew you. Away

from me, you evildoers sobering, Jesus only did the will of the Father,

and it led to our salvation. Jesus shows us two pictures here that

only those who are going to enter heaven are those who don't just hear God's

words, But it's those who hear the words of the Father and obey them

put them into practice. Jesus says, all the words I've spoken to you

are not from me, but only what I've heard from the Father. Jesus

is appointing us to be obedient to God. And at the same time,

it's not just about doing the words. That's not what saves you, but

a true belief that comes out of a real relationship with God. John tells

us what this relationship looks like. We know that we have come to know

Him if we keep his commands. Whoever says I know him but does not

do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that

person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made

complete in them. This is how we know we are in Him. Whoever

claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. Isn't it crazy how

clear scripture is. It really doesn't keep us guessing. We just need to

be better readers. It's all in there. Sometimes we don't read because we

know there's verses in there like this. This is how we know that we

are in him. That by putting our trust in him, a real trust

that leads to our obedience of his words, we will then live and look

like Jesus. Jesus is telling us to look at the fruit of our lives,

and now he tells us how. In One Timothy two nineteen, it

says this, Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm. Amen, I want

to be on God's solid foundation, do you yeah? Sealed with this inscription,

the Lord knows those who are His praise God, and everyone who confesses

the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness. If you're going to

name the name of the Lord, you are to turn away from your wicked

ways and turn to what You don't make that up. You don't have to.

He's already pointed you in the direction and told you what that is to

look like and where you are to go. So for you, believer,

if you have confessed Jesus as Lord, then the application should be pretty clear.

Turn away from your wickedness here and put the words of Jesus into practice.

If Christ has saved you, it's time to come out of your grave

and start walking in the life he has called you to. And if you

haven't confessed Christ's Lord, then I pray that you hear this good news,

and that you would hear the call to come out of your grave, and

that you would actually find life in Jesus Christ. That you would turn to

the Lord and obey him, and not only would you find life, but

you'd actually find security. You no longer have to worry about the future.

You know, I have longer have to worry about when you die, what's

gonna happen. You are secure. All the torrent you know is taken care

of. It ain't moving your house. And that's because of Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the perfect savior who can save you no matter what situation you are

in, and he promises to finish whatever work he starts in you. So

cling to him and return to him. I'd say, run to him and

then obey him and start to actually live out this new life in the Lord

of Lord and King of Kings. Would you please stand to your feet
