  1. We've been in a series called Luke The Orderly Account

  2. of Truth. We had a lot of verses to get

  3. through today and so I'm just gonna jump right into it.

  4. But we've been in this series. It's been awesome.

  5. We're going verse by verse through the whole book of Luke.

  6. Luke investigated and wrote an orderly account of what happened

  7. when Jesus walked the earth. And the reason he wrote

  8. that is so that we can have or so that

  9. we can know with certainty or know the exact truth

  10. about the things that we've been taught about Jesus.

  11. Right, yes, Amen, sing it loud.

  12. We can know the exact truth about what Jesus taught

  13. because of Luke's orderly investigated account. And last week Jesus

  14. taught his disciples how to pray, and we learn that

  15. God is a good father and he answers his children.

  16. He's a good father who answers his children. He knows

  17. what we need before we ask. In fact, he meets

  18. our greatest needs by giving us the Holy Spirit.

  19. Amen.

  20. And it's because of this that we can approach him

  21. with persistence and boldness or to follow the ANIV translation

  22. that we were read from with shameless audacity.

  23. We can come to Jesus.

  24. And this week we get to see God in the flesh,

  25. Jesus Christ, and just how much authority and power that

  26. he has. We believe in the Trinity right one God,

  27. three persons of God, the Father, God, the Son, Jesus,

  28. and God the Holy Spirit.

  29. That's the Trinity.

  30. In today's text, we're going to see the second person

  31. of the trinity, Jesus Christ, God the Son, exercise his

  32. authority over a demon, and then he's going to help

  33. that people see that there are only two sides in

  34. this battle. It isn't like hunger games, but twelve districts, right,

  35. twelve people all fighting against each other. No, there's only

  36. two sides in this battle. You're either with.

  37. Jesus or you're against him. And he doesn't lose.

  38. Jesus doesn't lose, and those who are with him on

  39. the side of God's kingdom, their end, the end of

  40. them is better off, not worse off. So today we're

  41. gonna be continuing in Luke chapter eleven. So if you

  42. give our bibles you can start turning there. We're gonna

  43. be in verses fourteen through twenty eight. And if you

  44. don't have a bible. We have some on the resource

  45. desk out there in the lobby, so please grab them.

  46. We want you to have a bible to keep and read.

  47. It's very important that we have God's word. So we're

  48. gonna read the text together, and then I'm gonna pray.

  49. So let's read through verses fourteen through twenty eight. Jesus

  50. was driving out a demon that was mute. When the

  51. demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and

  52. the crowd was amazed. But some of them said, by Beelzeble,

  53. the prince of demons, he is driving out demons. Others

  54. tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. Jesus

  55. knew their thoughts and said to them, any kingdom divided

  56. against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against

  57. itself will fall. If Satan is divided against himself, how

  58. can his kingdom stand? Say this because you claim that

  59. I drive out demons by Beelzible. Now if I drive

  60. out demons by Beelzible, by whom do your followers drive

  61. them out? So then they will be your judges. But

  62. if I drive out demons by the finger of God,

  63. then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When

  64. a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his

  65. possessions are safe. But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him,

  66. he takes away the armor in which the man trusted

  67. and divides up his plunder. Whoever is not with me

  68. is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

  69. When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it

  70. goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.

  71. Then it says, I will return to the house I left.

  72. When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and

  73. put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other

  74. spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and

  75. live there. And the final condition of that person is

  76. worse than the first. As Jesus was saying these things,

  77. a woman in the crowd called out, blessed is the

  78. mother who.

  79. Gave you birth and nursed you.

  80. He replied, blessed, rather are those who hear the word

  81. of God and obey it. So we got a big

  82. chunk of text. Let's pray before we go any further. God,

  83. we thank you for this moment. We thank you for

  84. your word and our chance to go through it and

  85. learn what you have for us today. God, give us

  86. hearts that are open and minds that are open to

  87. see and understand what you're teaching today. Let us hold

  88. it close to us and let us apply it to

  89. our lives, so that actually moves us and changes us

  90. and transforms us more into the image of Jesus. So God,

  91. we thank you for your revelation and scripture and the

  92. fact that we can freely go through it. So God,

  93. we just submit this whole service to you and ask

  94. for the Holy Spirit, You, the Holy Spirit, to guide

  95. our understanding of your text today. And Jesus name, everybody

  96. said a men who here remembers playing tug of war

  97. when they're a kid, Tug a war we used to

  98. play in g class, or if you went to like

  99. a youth camp, that was always one of the games

  100. you'd played.

  101. Tug of war.

  102. Two teams are pitted against each other. Right, they're each

  103. pulling on a rope, trying to pull the other team

  104. toward them. If you're playing a boring game of tug

  105. of war, you had a flag tied in the middle,

  106. right and you just had to pull it past a

  107. certain line. That's the boring version. If you're playing the

  108. cool and exciting version. There was a giant mudpit in

  109. the middle. That's the way more exciting. But who, like,

  110. who wants to be standing in the front of the

  111. rope staring at that mudpit?

  112. Right?

  113. That was where I was always at In case you

  114. were wondering, I was never the anchor person.

  115. Yeah, let's go. You don't stare in at this mudpit.

  116. That's the exciting game because those stakes are higher, right

  117. than just moving a flag. The last thing you wanted

  118. was to be standing in the front of that line

  119. staring at the mudpit, about to be pulled in.

  120. But who do you guys?

  121. Remember what you did when it came time to pick teams.

  122. And we did this with everything we do with flag football,

  123. we do with red rover when we were younger, you

  124. do with basketball. You would pick team captains, right, and

  125. you'd usually pick two people you didn't want on the

  126. same team because it wasn't fair if they're on the

  127. same team. Yeah, So you'd pick your team captains, you'd

  128. split them up and they would take turns picking people

  129. to their team. All right, you're the team captain. Now

  130. look at me, Look at me, you're the captain. Now

  131. any movie watchers totally gets that reference. If you don't,

  132. it's all good. Okay, you're the team captain games tug

  133. of war. Who are you picking first? Who are you

  134. picking on your team?

  135. First?

  136. You're gonna pick the biggest kid on the playground, right,

  137. the biggest one in the room, the strongest person in

  138. the group.

  139. That's what you're gonna pick.

  140. Right. You're gonna pick whoever you think is gonna help

  141. you win. They're gonna pick someone for your team that's

  142. gonna help guarantee that you win. So go ahead and

  143. raise your hand if you pick Jordan first on your team.

  144. So did I one hundred percent? Jordan's our anchor because

  145. we're gonna win. Sorry, Caleb, you're my second choice. I'm

  146. just saying, Chase is another solid guy up there. We're

  147. gonna pick the biggest person in the room, the strongest

  148. person in the group, because we want to win.

  149. Right.

  150. You want to be on the team with the person

  151. who's going to win. No one wants to be on

  152. the losing team. None of us do. Or, to make

  153. things a little bit more extreme, it's not good to

  154. be on the side who loses the war. It's not

  155. good to be on the side that loses the war.

  156. There's only two sides in this spiritual war. You're either

  157. with Jesus or you're against him. So my question for you,

  158. and also the title of today's message is this, whose

  159. side are you on? Whose side are you on in

  160. this great cosmic conflict? Whose side are you on? Are

  161. you with Jesus or are you against Jesus? And I

  162. think that the main point of today's message as we

  163. read through the tax is this the Lord delivers, but

  164. only those who gather to him will be blessed and

  165. better off. It's one of the challenges we have as

  166. preaching pastors is coming up with a way to fully

  167. put a nice bow on all of the text passages

  168. that we're reading today. I will gladly admit this was

  169. the hardest message I've ever put together when it comes

  170. to coming to the main point.

  171. I don't know why.

  172. Maybe God was stretching me in some way, but this

  173. one was hard for me to tie that line all

  174. the way through to help prove if I'm gonna say

  175. we're landing on a point, I got to prove to

  176. you guys how we got there and without bending scripture.

  177. So the Lord took me through one this week.

  178. But I believe that the main point of today's text

  179. is the Lord delivers, but only those who gathered to

  180. him will be blessed and better off.

  181. It's those who are on his side or those who gather.

  182. To him that experience blessing in the end, the experience

  183. blessings that in the end are better and not worse.

  184. That we're better off, not worse off. You guys ready

  185. to break down this text? Okay, we're gonna look at

  186. the first few verses and Jesus is gonna show his

  187. authority over demons. Verses fourteen through sixteen, Jesus was driving

  188. out a demon that was mute. When the demon left,

  189. the man who had been mute spoke and the crowd

  190. was amazed. But some of them said, by Beelzeble, the

  191. prince of demons, he is driving out demons. Others tested

  192. him by asking for a sign from heaven. This whole

  193. passage starts out with Jesus driving out a demon, but

  194. the point of the passage is not about demon possession.

  195. You guys see that even though Jesus is talking about it,

  196. he's using this moment or this casting out of a

  197. demon to show the people something. He's showing his power,

  198. He's showing his authority over Satan and his demons. He's

  199. also showing that he has love and compassion for the people,

  200. showing that he had compassion on the mute man and

  201. commanded the demon to leave. And you know what, the

  202. mute demon obeyed. Didn't have a choice, it had to lead.

  203. It left the man, and the man began to speak.

  204. I mean, just imagine if you were unable to speak

  205. for any length of time, the moment your tongue was loosed,

  206. you probably would have a lot to say, right, you know,

  207. I found out recently that men arrive in heaven thirty

  208. minutes before women.

  209. Do you guys are know this?

  210. I actually says in Revelation eight to one. When he

  211. opened the seventh Seal, there was silence in heaven for

  212. about a half an hour.

  213. Because women love.

  214. Talking, right, I'm kidding. It's totally a joke. Blame Jordany

  215. said it to me this week and I had to

  216. put it in there. Completely, completely a joke, and that

  217. was a little funny. Please don't hate me and ignore

  218. me for the whole rest of the service. That is

  219. not a correct understanding of that Revelations text. For the record, Yeah,

  220. but Jesus casts out this demon of the mute man,

  221. and the mute man began to speak, and the crowd

  222. is amazed. That makes sense because something amazing just happened, right,

  223. makes perfect sense that they would be amazed.

  224. But not everybody was amazed. That's not the text said,

  225. did it.

  226. No, the text said that some of them, which to

  227. me doesn't make sense, responded oddly. Let's read it again,

  228. Verses fifteen and sixteen. But some of them said by beelsible,

  229. the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.

  230. Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.

  231. Jesus had some haters, and it's not just then, but

  232. he also has some haters now, right, and he reminds

  233. his disciples, which is also should be a reminder for

  234. us that if the world hates us, or the world

  235. hates the disciples, to remember the world hated Jesus first,

  236. and it's actually a good thing because that means we

  237. are not of this world. That means we're of the

  238. Kingdom of God. Because if we were of the Kingdom

  239. of the world and the world would love us. Someone

  240. just I want to get this on a T shirt

  241. because I saw it recently. It said make pastors uncool again,

  242. because there's like this whole thing about like we got

  243. to be the cool people, you know, just the trendy

  244. guys or whatever. But it's not very popular to say

  245. what Jesus said, right, Jesus has some haters, so we

  246. should expect that there's going to be some haters as well.

  247. If we were of the world, and the world would

  248. love us at its own as its own and that's

  249. from John fifteen.

  250. But these people hate Jesus.

  251. So much that they accused him of working with his

  252. enemy Beelsible. And what is beelsible? What does this word

  253. even mean? Or beels above If you have another translation,

  254. it's you know, but the Prince of demons?

  255. What is that?

  256. That's just a Jewish name for the ruler of the demons,

  257. the lord of flies. You guys have heard of that before, right,

  258. It's a name another name for Satan or the devil.

  259. They just said that the amazing and loving things that

  260. Jesus had just done and was doing, the incredible blessing

  261. of deliverance from a demon, they were saying that was

  262. the work of Satan. They were accusing Jesus of working

  263. for that's like saying Batman works for the Joker. It's

  264. just ridiculous. It's not gonna happen, right, Batman's awesome. He's

  265. the guy going around saving everybody, and so he's going

  266. to be working for the guy who's trying to wipe

  267. everybody out.

  268. That doesn't make any sense.

  269. They're trying to associate Jesus and his work with the

  270. worst name they can think of possible, and that would

  271. be picking the literal adversary of God. But still others,

  272. they don't believe what he was doing, what he was saying,

  273. and they want to proof, so they tested him and

  274. asking a sign for a sign from heaven. And we

  275. won't talk about the implications of that because that's literally

  276. the message for next week the pastor Duncan's going to preach,

  277. But for now, just understand that they refuse to believe Jesus,

  278. They refuse to believe who he was who he said

  279. he was, and they demanded that he performed a miracle

  280. right in front of him. But I mean, what more

  281. do they want. He's been performing miracles the whole time

  282. he's been doing his ministry, really trying not to talk

  283. about the implications with that, because it's so good, and

  284. I know that Pastor Duncan's gonna do an awesome job

  285. next week. But they didn't believe him, and they demanded

  286. a sign. So Jesus responds to these absurdities, and he

  287. actually brings a very logical illustration in verses seventeen and eighteen.

  288. Let's look at that.

  289. Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, any kingdom

  290. divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided

  291. against itself will fall. If Satan is divided against himself,

  292. how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you

  293. claim that I drive out demons by beelzable. So Jesus

  294. is reading minds again. He knows their thoughts. God knows

  295. our thoughts. They're not a secret to him. He knows everything.

  296. Psalm one thirty nine says, you perceive my thoughts from

  297. Afar that before the words even leave our mouths, he

  298. knows them completely. He knows every word that would leave

  299. our li before it's left our mouth completely. And in

  300. that knowing, Jesus is answering these people, this crowd around him,

  301. and he's not making some statement about the strength of

  302. the kingdom of Satan. That's not actually the point he's making.

  303. He's giving an example of the kingdom of a house divided.

  304. Why why is he giving this example, Well, second part

  305. of verse eighteen. I say this because you claim that

  306. I drive out demons by beelsible. This is why he's

  307. talking about his kingdom divided. It's not about the strength

  308. of this kingdom of Satan. It's because they're claiming that

  309. he's driving out demons by beelsible. He's pointing out how

  310. illogical their thought process was.

  311. What you're saying doesn't make sense.

  312. You guys, how can Satan's how stand of his own

  313. people are working against him? Doesn't make sense? How could

  314. it stand? Which doesn't make logical sense? Go back to

  315. our tug of war example from the beginning. Half the

  316. people on the team. Instead of pulling on the rope,

  317. we're trying to push it. How's that gonna go. It's

  318. not gonna work, right, It just isn't gonna work. The

  319. whole team fails if you aren't all working towards the

  320. same goal. Satan's kingdom can't stand if there's someone in

  321. the ranks who's working against him. It just can't stand.

  322. But do you see how blinded these people were by

  323. their hate of Jesus. See how blinded they were. Logic

  324. and common sense went right out the window. And you

  325. actually see that all the time today, even logic and

  326. common sense goes out the window, all because you hate

  327. someone so much. So, Jesus continued in verses nineteen and twenty. Now,

  328. if I drive out demons by beelzable, by whom do

  329. your followers drive them out?

  330. So then they will be your judges.

  331. But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,

  332. then the Kingdom of God has come upon you. Now

  333. I think Jesus is dropping some bars. He says, look

  334. at your own followers, the people that you're leading. Look

  335. at your own followers. When they drive out demons by

  336. whose name are they doing that? By whose name? By

  337. whose name are they doing the miracles of God? They

  338. can't say by Satan or else. They're leading people to

  339. literally follow the devil. They can't say that, so they

  340. must say by God. Remember, there's only two sides here,

  341. the side of the finger of God and everybody else.

  342. And it's I think such an awesome flex here by Jesus,

  343. do you remember when we just preached it a little

  344. bit ago in Luke chapter eight, when Jesus went to

  345. the other side of the Sea of Galilee and met

  346. the demon possessed man, the one that was full of

  347. all the demons, Legion.

  348. Does that make sense? Does you guys remember that?

  349. Well, if you didn't, there's a guy who was full

  350. of a lot of demons, and it was Legion. Was

  351. the name so many demons that when they went out

  352. of the man, when they were cast out of the

  353. man and went into an entire herd of pigs, and

  354. the pigs ran down the slope and drowned themselves.

  355. Right.

  356. Well, if you read that account in the Book of

  357. Market tells us it was like two thousand pigs.

  358. It's a lot of bacon, two thousand pigs.

  359. And Jesus says, if I drive out demons by the

  360. finger of God, then the Kingdom of God has come

  361. upon you.

  362. Right.

  363. All it took to drive two thousand demons out into

  364. pigs was the finger of God. He didn't even have

  365. to try. That isn't difficult for him. The finger of God.

  366. The power that's in just the finger of God. The

  367. magnitude of how powerful God is is ungraspable.

  368. That's a word. It's unfathomable. There's a real word.

  369. You can't even comprehend how powerful God is. Just his

  370. the finger of God is the one that casts out

  371. all these demons. He doesn't even have to try. And

  372. that finger of God means what Jesus saying here is

  373. that the Kingdom of God has come upon you. So

  374. the Kingdom of God is here. And the king of

  375. that kingdom was standing right in front of him, the

  376. King of all kings, the Lord of all lords, Jesus.

  377. They had been waiting for their king, and they just

  378. refused to believe that Jesus was him, no matter what

  379. he said and no matter what he did, which by

  380. the way, was prophesied the whole time by the prophets

  381. of the Old Testament. They've been waiting for him, and

  382. they refused to believe that Jesus was him.

  383. They outright rejected him.

  384. But even this rejection of Jesus, and this is like

  385. a kind of a side note that I didn't want

  386. to mention, this rejection of Jesus was all part of

  387. God's plan to bring about his kingdom. It was their rejection.

  388. It was through the rejection of Jesus that God brought

  389. about his plan of salvation not only to save the Jews,

  390. but also to say the gentile else, thank you God

  391. that you did that.

  392. Amen. And for more about that, read Romans ten and eleven.

  393. Fantastic chapter is to read read all of Romans, but

  394. ten eleven will get you those answers. So Jesus tells

  395. the people that the Kingdom of God has come upon them,

  396. and then he gives an illustration to help us understand

  397. what happens to those who are not with him and

  398. who are not with the Kingdom of God.

  399. And that starts in verse twenty one.

  400. When a strong man fully armed, guards his own house,

  401. his possessions are safe. But when someone stronger attacks and

  402. overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the

  403. man trusted and divides up his plunder. Whoever is not

  404. with me is against me, and whoever does not gather

  405. with me scatters.

  406. And it is the basic illustration it makes.

  407. It's pretty straightforward, makes sense, right that there's a strong

  408. man guarding a house, everything remains in his possession.

  409. It's only if someone.

  410. Stronger than him attacks him and overpowers him that he

  411. loses everything. Right, There isn't anything you can do to

  412. stop someone who's stronger than you. If they chose to

  413. do something, or if they've decided to do something, it's

  414. going to happen. And that's the point that Jesus just made.

  415. But then he goes into to define who's who in

  416. this illustration? Who is each person in this illustration? He says,

  417. whoever's not with me is against me, and whoever does

  418. not gather to me scatters.

  419. So who's the strong man? A strong man here?

  420. He just casts out demons. A strong man is Satan

  421. and he's trying to guard his house. He's trying to

  422. keep hold of what he possesses. Okay, so the strong

  423. man Satan. Then who is the someone stronger that shows

  424. up in overpowers? Who just showed up and cast out

  425. the demons.

  426. Jesus did.

  427. Jesus is the someone stronger. He is the stronger one

  428. who shows up. He takes away the armor or protection

  429. of the enemy. He divides the plunder. Jesus says that

  430. he is the stronger one, and those who are not

  431. with him are against him. Matthew, Chapter ten, Jesus tells

  432. that he didn't come to bring peace, but a sword.

  433. He didn't come to bring peace, but he came to

  434. bring a sword, And as loving as he is, he

  435. still takes that sword and draws a line in the sand,

  436. those who are with me on one side, and those

  437. who are against me on the other. It's those who

  438. are of the Kingdom of God who are on one side,

  439. and everyone else is on the other. Those who don't

  440. gather to Jesus will scatter like darkness scatters when light

  441. is shone. And I love the imagery between light and darkness.

  442. The Bible uses it all over the place. But what

  443. happens when you're standing in a dark room and someone

  444. turns on the light. What happens to the darkness? It

  445. goes away, It disappears, it vanishes, There's no more darkness.

  446. The enemies of Jesus can't stand before him any more

  447. than darkness can remain. And the light is turned on,

  448. the enemies of Jesus can't stand before him any more

  449. than darkness can remain when the lights are turned on.

  450. So why do the demons tremble in fear before Jesus?

  451. Why do they tremble in fear? It's because they know

  452. who the stronger one is. They know who the stronger

  453. one is. They know the authority and power that Jesus has.

  454. They know the end to which they are headed. You know,

  455. the demons know scripture right, They quote it back to people.

  456. You see that in scripture. They quote it back.

  457. Satan quoted it to Jesus. They know the end to

  458. which they are headed.

  459. But thinking about that story, when Jesus cast the demons

  460. out and they went into the pigs, what did one

  461. of the demons who got cast in the pigs say?

  462. He said, what do you want with me, Jesus, Son

  463. of the Most High God?

  464. I beg you don't torture me.

  465. And he continued to beg Jesus and said, ask them

  466. not to order them to go into the abyss, because

  467. if Jesus orders it, they must obey.

  468. They have to do it.

  469. Jesus has all authority, Jesus has all power. All of

  470. it belongs to Jesus. He is the stronger one. He

  471. will overpower all who are not standing with him. He

  472. will cause everyone who does not gather to him to scatter.

  473. Ever seen a bunch of teenage boys lighting off fireworks,

  474. all huddle together, the fuses in one hand, the lighters

  475. in the other. What happens when they light the fuse,

  476. They scatter like cockroaches. When you turn the light on right,

  477. they all run. They fear what happens if they don't move.

  478. Why because they understand the power of what they just lit.

  479. They run, They scatter. They scatter before the power in

  480. front of them, just as the enemies of Jesus will

  481. scatter before him, because there is no denying as power.

  482. At his name.

  483. Every knee will bow, every tongue will confess that Jesus

  484. Christ's Lord. The next part of our text today's it

  485. kind of seems like Jesus is going back and explaining

  486. more about what was going on when he just drove

  487. this mute demon out of the man. So let's look

  488. at the next few verses twenty four through twenty six.

  489. When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it

  490. goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it,

  491. then says, I'll return to the house I left. When

  492. it arrives, it finds a house swept clean and put

  493. in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits

  494. more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there.

  495. And the final condition of that person is worse than

  496. the first. That man who had just had the demon

  497. driven out of him, his house had been swept clean

  498. and put in order.

  499. But when the impure.

  500. Spirit comes back, he sees the houses left wide open

  501. for him. In seven of his impure spirit friends, these

  502. wicked spirits come back. It's like all those movies you

  503. see of high schoolers when their parents go out of town.

  504. Where are you going to this?

  505. They think that, Hey, I'm just gonna invite a few

  506. friends over to hang out, right, But then the bad

  507. kid at school catches wind that there's no parents at

  508. this house, and so they make up flyers, pass them

  509. out to everybody at school and says, it's a big rager.

  510. Everyone's invited, right, And then next thing you know is

  511. three hundred kids showing up and destroying the house. They

  512. are way worse off than when they first started.

  513. It's kind of like that.

  514. That's what I think these demons are doing, punching out

  515. flyers and sending their demon friends and inviting all their

  516. demons over. But what point is Jesus actually making here? Like,

  517. what point is he trying to make? Why is he

  518. talking about people being delivered by demons only to be

  519. worse off than before.

  520. Why would he bring this up?

  521. And in order to understand this, we have to put

  522. all the pieces of the puzzle together. If Jesus is

  523. the one who is stronger, stronger than the Satan and

  524. his kingdom, and he drives out demons by the finger

  525. of God, and if demons, after they're driven out, come

  526. back with a vengeance, then what is the logical conclusion

  527. based on the text that Jesus is saying, we.

  528. Must gather to Jesus. Gather to Jesus.

  529. How can demons come back when the one who is

  530. stronger is standing guard.

  531. They can't. They can't come back.

  532. And last week when Jesus taught us how to pray,

  533. what does God, our Father give us? He meets our

  534. greatest need? Right, But what was the last thing he said?

  535. He gives us the Holy Spirit God, the Holy Spirit.

  536. If we're filled with the Holy Spirit, there isn't any

  537. room for the demons to move into.

  538. That's the gift. That's what God gives us, the Holy Spirit.

  539. This man who is just delivered his blessing of deliverance

  540. only lasts if he gathers to Jesus. This blessing of

  541. deliverance only lasts if he gathers to Jesus, otherwise he

  542. will be worse off. And I kind of wrote it

  543. down like this, This is how I like to say it.

  544. Temporary blessings mean nothing if our eternity is damnation. What's

  545. the point of this man being delivered from a demon

  546. if his eternal destination is to be in the lake

  547. of fire next to Satan and his demons. For the

  548. non believer, the one who doesn't gather to Jesus, which

  549. what I'm saying is, doesn't repent of their sin and

  550. believe in Jesus, their days, no matter how good or bad,

  551. are only followed by an eternal worse. Even if they

  552. receive all the earthly blessings that you can imagine in

  553. your head, their days still end in eternal ruin. The

  554. final condition of that person is worse than the first.

  555. You guys, seeing that in the text, does that make sense?

  556. What's the point of having the most beautiful music on

  557. the planet if you go death.

  558. But for the believer, the one who.

  559. Has gathered to Jesus, our days, no matter how good

  560. or bad, are only followed by an eternal better, followed

  561. by an eternal best. We get to look forward to

  562. being face to face with Jesus, no more distance, no

  563. more separation for all eternity.

  564. And that is something to praise God and.

  565. Thank him for himn Can I have the band come

  566. up or whoever's gonna play?

  567. Please and thank you? Yeah?

  568. So how does this man stay delivered? He gathers to Jesus.

  569. He gathers to the one who is stronger. In the

  570. last two verses today seem to me seem like an

  571. interruption when Jesus is speaking, but he still gets through

  572. and makes his point. Let's look at verses twenty seven.

  573. And twenty eight.

  574. As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the

  575. crowd called out, blessed is the mother who gave you

  576. birth and nursed you. He replied, blessed rather are those

  577. who hear the word of God and obey it. Blessed

  578. rather are those who hear the word of God and

  579. obey it. Yes, Mary was incredibly blessed to have been

  580. chosen by God to birth the savior.

  581. Of the world.

  582. But Jesus said, the one who is actually blessed is

  583. the one who hears God's word and obeys. And God

  584. has been saying this to his people ever since he

  585. created him. Right, we know, we see this all throughout scripture.

  586. Obey me and things.

  587. Will go well for you.

  588. But he's also very clear that lack of obedience leads

  589. to ruin. He has a particular order in which he

  590. set things up to work, and when we don't align

  591. with that order, things don't work. And he's basically said

  592. that on repeat for the entire Old Testament to the

  593. children of Israel. But I think this is Jesus's way

  594. of explaining to us how to gather to him, how

  595. to be with him rather than be against him, and

  596. is to hear the word of.

  597. God and obey it.

  598. The way the mute man stays demon free is to

  599. gather to the one who is stronger than Satan and

  600. all his demons. And the way he gathers to the

  601. one who is stronger is by hearing God's word and obeying.

  602. And isn't that the same message that we have. It's

  603. the same message to us. We've been delivered from our sin, Amen,

  604. thank you God. And it's those who've been delivered who

  605. will gather to Jesus. Why And John ten he says,

  606. my sheep know my voice.

  607. They will remain in him.

  608. He died and rose again, defeating the power of sin

  609. and death.

  610. And everyone who comes to him, everyone.

  611. Who gathers to him and believes, they will receive forgiveness

  612. of their sins, and they will be raised in the

  613. last days to everlasting life. But the biggest encouragement slash

  614. challenge I think I want for us today is actually

  615. found in John fifteen. It's a cool parallel to the

  616. points that Jesus is making here. If Jesus is telling

  617. us to gather to him to be on his side,

  618. then let's look at what John fifteen says. I am

  619. the true vine, and my father is the gardener. He

  620. cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit. Well,

  621. every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that

  622. will be even more fruitful.

  623. He cares for the state of the fruit or the vines.

  624. You are already clean because of the word I've spoken

  625. to You remain in me, as I also remain in you.

  626. No branch and bear fruit by itself, it must remain

  627. in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you

  628. remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches.

  629. If you remain in me and I in you, you

  630. will bear much fruit. Apart from me, you can do what.

  631. Apart from me, You can do nothing. If you do

  632. not remain in me, you are like a branch that

  633. is thrown away and withered. Such branches are picked up

  634. and thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain

  635. in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever

  636. you wish, and it will be done for you. This

  637. is to my father's glory that you bear much fruit

  638. showing yourselves to be my disciples.

  639. As a father has loved me, so have I loved you.

  640. Now remain in my love. If you can keep my commands,

  641. you will remain in my love, just as I have

  642. kept my father's commands and remain in his love. What's

  643. the over arching resounding thing in this text? If you

  644. ever confused on a text as you're reading through it

  645. trying to find like, what's the point here, one thing

  646. to look for is repeating words.

  647. How many times you say remain in me, remain in me.

  648. That's the most resounding part of this passage that Jesus calls.

  649. For us to remain in him.

  650. We can do nothing apart from Jesus, especially nothing of

  651. eternal value.

  652. We must remain in the vine.

  653. A branch can do nothing but die when it's separated

  654. from the vine. We can't bear any fruit if we

  655. don't remain in Jesus. We must gather to Jesus and

  656. remain in him. And our text today ended with blessed.

  657. Rather are those who hear the word of God and

  658. obey it. We'll look at the end of John fifteen.

  659. Can we go back.

  660. Verse ten?

  661. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love,

  662. just as I've kept my father's commands and remain in

  663. his love. Keep his commands, remain in his love. Our

  664. text today obey God's word and be blessed. And that's

  665. our application for today. I think that's how we need

  666. to apply the text. Go to that next slide that

  667. was just up. Gather to Jesus and remain in Jesus.

  668. That's what we need to do. And we need to

  669. gather to Jesus and remain in Jesus. But how do

  670. we do that? What does that even mean? What does

  671. it mean to remain in Jesus? And I put five

  672. real quick points, some good practical stuff for us to do.

  673. And the first one is stand firm in the faith.

  674. I don't know how this is going to look at

  675. the end, but we'll see. We'll see if it worked.

  676. Stand firm in the faith. Don't walk away. That's kind

  677. of seems kind of simple, right, How do I remain

  678. in Jesus? You don't leave? How do I remain standing

  679. where I'm at? I don't walk from this place? Stand

  680. firm in the faith. One Corinthians sixteen, thirteen and fourteen says,

  681. be on your guard, stand firm in the faith. Be courageous,

  682. be strong to everything in love, have steadfast resolve, Be

  683. immovable when it comes to the things of faith.

  684. Be immovable.

  685. Remember the gospel message of Jesus, and hold fast to

  686. your faith, remaining in Jesus by standing firm or excuse me,

  687. remain in Jesus by standing firm in your faith. Number two,

  688. Grow and mature your faith. Grow and mature your faith.

  689. Hebrew six one says. Therefore, let us move beyond the

  690. elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity.

  691. We're encouraged to grow. It only takes faith the size

  692. of a mustard seed to believe. Right, That's what the

  693. Bible tells us. But don't leave your faith that size.

  694. Grow it.

  695. Jesus said you of little faith on multiple occasions, challenging

  696. the disciples to grow that faith. Growing your faith is

  697. what actually helps you stand firm. I grow my faith

  698. and there's nothing that shakes it because I know the

  699. truth and I'm standing on the truth. Grow your faith.

  700. Mature your faith. Growing your faith helps you stand firm.

  701. Maturing your faith helps you wisely remain in Jesus. Number

  702. three is pray without ceasing one Thessalonians five sixteen seventeen,

  703. very too, very short versus rejoice always pray continually four.

  704. Words two verses.

  705. So if you everyone our memorized in Bible verses, those

  706. are two you can pick. Rejoice always pray continually. Be

  707. in constant communication and connection with God the Father. Our

  708. whole Christian walk should be covered in prayer. And we

  709. talked about a little bit last week, not a little bit.

  710. The whole thing was on prayer. But Christians are a

  711. praying people. It's just who we are. We remain in

  712. Jesus by constant and prayer, by being connected to Him

  713. at all times. Number four is seek out God's word, hear.

  714. It and obey it. Seek out God's word and obey

  715. it James one, twenty two. Do not merely listen to

  716. the word and so deceive yourself.

  717. Do what it says. God has spoken to us a lot.

  718. He said a lot of things to us, and in

  719. his providence, he had believers long before us write it

  720. all down so we can have it today.

  721. Thank you God.

  722. Read God's word and obey it. That's why it's so

  723. important to us that we so important to us that

  724. you have a Bible, and we will give them to

  725. you if you don't.

  726. I don't know. We have them on our phones.

  727. Too, but sometimes it's nice to actually flip through something,

  728. read God's word and obey it. If we're on his side,

  729. if we're part of his kingdom, then we should obey

  730. his king and that's Jesus. We remain in Jesus through

  731. obedience to his commands. And when we keep his commands,

  732. we remain in his love because that's what his commands

  733. drive us to, remaining in him. And number five is

  734. fellowship with other believers. To fellowship with other believers Hebrews

  735. ten twenty three through twenty five has let us hold

  736. unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promises faithful,

  737. And let us consider how we may spur one another

  738. on to love and good deeds, not giving up meeting

  739. together as some are in the habit of doing, but

  740. encourage one another and all the more as you see

  741. the day approaching. It's among other believers that were spurred

  742. on too love and good works. My brothers in Christ

  743. encourage me and challenge me to remain in Christ, no

  744. matter the circums stances. I don't feel like it today.

  745. I don't care brother, follow the Lord. Remain in Jesus.

  746. Well, I don't whatever. Fill in the blank.

  747. I had a bad day, Okay, Well does it matter

  748. the circumstances?

  749. What if I'm flying?

  750. Hi? Hey, Greg, looks like you're forgetting to remain in

  751. Jesus because you're doing a little too good right now.

  752. My brothers in Christ are the ones who help me,

  753. encourage me, and challenge me to remain in Christ. The

  754. fellowship of Believers is one of God's greatest tools to

  755. sanctify us, to shape us, and to transform us more

  756. into the im of Jesus.

  757. It's one of his tools to help us remain in Jesus.

  758. And that's one of the reasons we even started these

  759. men's in women's events because we have our once a

  760. month breakfasts and our uh and starting this month, we're

  761. doing our once a month ministry nights, which I can't

  762. wait for.

  763. It's gonna be awesome.

  764. Yes, but go to those events. Fellowship with other believers.

  765. They will help you remain in Jesus. Like we have

  766. to be around other believers. If you're the one fish

  767. swimming against all the other schools of fish, how difficult

  768. your job gonna be?

  769. Or make it upstream downstream? I don't care. No, here's

  770. a better example.

  771. Like if I had this chair up here, and I

  772. stood on the chair, and I had a bunch of

  773. people in a circle, and I reached down and grab

  774. one of your hands, Who's winning that.

  775. Tug of war battle?

  776. Not me? Because it's me versus a bunch of other people.

  777. I'm going to go in that direction. So what should

  778. we do? Fellowship with believers, be around more strong people

  779. that will encourage us to remain in Jesus. Fellowship is

  780. not only super important, but God commands it of us

  781. to fellowship with other believers. You are not meant to

  782. walk out this Christian walk alone. Who does Satan devour.

  783. He is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour,

  784. and lines devour those who are separated from the pack.

  785. So why would you willingly walk away from the pack? No,

  786. gather together and fellowship with other believers so that we

  787. remain in Christ.

  788. To go to those monthly events.

  789. They're amazing. If you want more information, go to the

  790. resource desk. We have more information out there. Jesus is

  791. the stronger one and he will never lose. He has

  792. all authority and he has all power over everything that

  793. includes Satan and his demons. So you have nothing to

  794. fear if you gather with Jesus and remain in him.

  795. He is the stronger one. If you gather with Jesus,

  796. you are on the right side. Not that you're the

  797. team captain when it comes to salvation, but you pick

  798. the right person out of your.

  799. Team because you're gonna win that tug of war.

  800. You were on the side that wins. When you gather

  801. to Jesus, the Lord delivers, but only those who gather

  802. to him who are on his side will be blessed

  803. and better off.

  804. And the only thing that's left for us to do

  805. after we

  806. Gather is to remain in him, to gather to Jesus

  807. and remain in Jesus Amen
