Luke, The Orderly Account of Truth - What Do You Treasure - Luke 18:15-30

How's it going. Welcome to the roots, where it's all

about Jesus. We love God, we love people, we reach

the lost, and we make disciples. I'm grateful to be here,

especially being that the weather isn't super great.

Did you guys get to enjoy the sun? Yesterday? It

was too hot? I was outside.

I know, I know, it's crazy, like it just rains

and I'm like, oh, and then the sun comes out

and immediately I'm like, it's too hot, and They're like,

it's only like sixty degrees.

So I'm like, yeah, but.

It has provided a great opportunity for yard work. So

each day I've been trying to get out there hit

my quota of weeds. Have a lot of weeds in

my yard. If you guys are ever looking for some

I don't know community service to do, I would love

the help.

But a couple weeknds ago, I was I was out

pulling weeds.

The kids are outside playing in the yard and one

of my daughter's run up to me and she says, dad, look,

and she opens up her hands and inside is this

assortment of halved egg corn shells, a dirty bright light piece,

a tiny plastic duck. I don't know where that came from.

But and she holds them up and in her joy

she says, they're my treasures.

Now.

This brought me back to when she was about two

years old, because this was my oldest and when she

was about two years old, we'd gone to the dollar

store and at the dollar store she found this barbie

that she like, you could just tell she looked at

this thing like it was the greatest thing as she'd

ever seen.

She loved it so much, and it broke my heart.

It broke my heart to see her love something so

much because I was looking at it, going like this

thing is. You haven't even purchased this thing, and it's

already on her last legs. It wasn't it wasn't very

well made.

Which was sad.

But do you, guys, anything like that, anything that you

love so much that brings you joy, but maybe someone

else doesn't understand or get very well, something that maybe

you consider a treasure to you, yet nobody else gets it.

Well.

If you ask my wife, who unfortunately is home with

six children today, if you ask her, she will tell

you probably what my treasure is is my rocks.

My rocks. You say, what are you talking about?

Well, guess what I'm gonna show you my rocks, okay,

and I brought them here in this chest.

This is a chest that they actually reside in. Just

not kidding.

And there's another chest in my garage that was made

from a grandpa. And inside that chest is this chest.

And I emptied this chest of other treasures, coonine knives, weights,

different things like that, because I want to share with

you my treasure. Here right, here's the perfect skipping stone.

Found this.

I'm like, you can't even skip it. It's too good.

It's too too perfect, too amazing. This is the softest

stone I've ever found. Soft guys, it's awesome. It's my treasure. Okay,

Now we're gonna get utilitarian about this. It's my rock spoon.

Look at this thing. It has a handle, a little divin.

If ever I find myself without a spoon, I have one.

Just in case I'm eating a bigger meal, I have

a bigger rock spoon.

Look at that. These are my treasures.

Now you might be like how I was with my daughter,

or maybe how my wife is concerning my rocks because

she thinks they're ridiculous. They kind of are, but I

love them. Those are my rocks. You might pity or

laugh at the ridiculousness of the fact that these.

Rocks genuinely bring me so much joy. I don't even

use them. I'm just happy they exist in their mind.

But we all have stuff like this in our lives,

though we might consider them worth more or actually of value,

rather than something as random as cool shaped rocks. It

might be what we collect, it might be a high

paying job, it might be the love that we seek

from others. But what we need to examine, and what

we're going to examine today, is are the things that

we treasure actually treasure or is it just junk that

is getting in the way of true treasure. The reason

I want us to examine this in ourselves is because,

as we will see in our texts today, we're gonna

see two different people who treasure very different things, and

the result of them treasuring different things leads them to

following different things.

So we're gonna look at that together.

If you would please turn with me to the Gospel

of Luke, it's in your New Testament. We're gonna be

in chapter eighteen, going through verses fifteen through thirty.

If you do not have a Bible we have some

of the back for you.

Please go grabbing their out and on the resource desk

out in the lobby. All right, we're gonna read it.

We're gonna pray and jump right into it. Sound good, awesome,

this is God's word, says now. They're bringing even infants

to him that he might touch them. And when the

disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called them

to him, saying, let the children come to me, and

do not hinder them, for to such belongs the Kingdom

of God. Truly, I say to you you, whoever does

not receive the Kingdom of God like a child, shall

not enter it. And a ruler asked him, good teacher,

what must I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus

said to him, why do you call me good? No

one is good except God alone. You know the commandments.

Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal,

do not bear false witness. Honor your father and mother.

And he said, all these I have kept from my youth.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him one thing

you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute

to the poor, and you will have treasure.

In heaven and come follow me.

But when he heard these things, he became very sad,

for he was extremely rich.

Jesus, seeing that he had become.

Sad, said how difficult it is for those who have

wealth to enter the Kingdom of God. For it is

easier for a camel to go through the eye of

a needle than for a rich person to enter the

Kingdom of God.

Those who heard it said, then, who can be saved?

But he said, what is impossible with man is possible

with God. And Peter said, see, we have left our

home and truly followed and followed you.

And he said to them, truly, I say to you.

There is no one who has left house or wife,

or brothers, or parents or children for the sake of

the Kingdom of God who will not receive many times

more in this time and in the age to come,

eternal life.

Let's pray, Lord Jesus, we give you this time.

We set it aside with the hope in our hearts,

and evidently in the purpose of your plan for us

to be here today to hear this word.

We just asked that you would use it, that it

would be fruitful.

That you have already been softening our hearts through the

songs that we've been singing, preparing us.

To hear this word.

So please just help me get out of the way,

help everyone else get out of the way, and help

us have open ears, open eyes for your word this

afternoon in Jesus name, everyone said Amen. So, if today

is your first time, we've been in a series going

through the Gospel of Luke titled Luke The Orderly Account

of Truth. In this series, we've been going through the

carefully investigated historical account of the life, ministry, and teachings of.

The Lord Jesus. Luke wrote this.

Gospel account with the intention of having an orderly account

of Jesus's life written down for the reader to be

strengthened in their faith concerning who Jesus is, as he

writes at the beginning of his gospel, where he says

that you may have certainty concerning the things you have

been taught.

Now.

The last several weeks, we've seen Jesus hammering on different topics,

ranging from what it will be like when the kingdom

comes to persistence in prayer, persistence in faith, to as

we saw last week, the importance of humility.

Last week we looked at an example of a.

Pharisee who thought he was better than everyone else, and

so he looked down on others. And what's more is

he thanked God that he wasn't like everybody else. And

that was contrasted with a despised tax collector, the sinner,

and he came before God in the temple. He wouldn't

even look up to Heaven and instead beat his chest, saying,

God be merciful to me, a sinner. Jesus told us

that the humble tax collector, who recognized his sin and

need for God's grace, went home justified or write with

God God, rather than the self righteous pharisee. Jesus ended

with saying, everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but

those who humble themselves will be exalted. And now we

get to today's text. We're going to see kind of

three things. To make it easier, I started each one

with a P. The first one we're going to see

is Jesus set a precedent. Next, Jesus is going to

address a problem, and finally, Jesus is going to give

us a promise. So, looking at our text from a

ten thousand foot view, those are the three things that

we're going to be seeing. Jesus gives us a precedent

or an example, telling us that the kingdom belongs to

those who are like children, and that no one will

enter the kingdom unless they receive it like a child.

Then we're going to.

See a man who wants to receive the kingdom, but

has a very glaring problem as it regards what he

treasures most.

Then we get to the disciples who've left their homes.

We've left a lot of things to follow Jesus and

the assurance and promise that Jesus gives to them, but

not only to them, but for anyone who would do

the same. So that's the ten thousand foot view. But

let's look at it a little bit more up close.

There's a lot of good stuff in here that I

believe will be helpful and challenging for us today. So

if you're taking notes, the title of today's message is

very simply put, what.

Do you treasure? What do you treasure?

So once again let's look at the first part of

the text of the precedent. We get this kind of

interesting scene where people are bringing their children in infants

to Jesus, so that he'll bless them, and the disciples

start rebuking and turning the people away.

But instead of Jesus being like, good job, guys, that's

exactly what I wanted.

To do, Jesus instead rebukes his disciples and tells them

something extraordinary. Look what it says in verse fifteen. Now

they were bringing even infants to him that he might

touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

But Jesus called them to him, saying, let the children

come to me, and do not hinder them, for to

such belongs the Kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you,

whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a

child shall not enter it. Jesus says to his disciples,

those who are trying to keep the little ones from

coming to him, that in fact, it's those who are

like children who would be the ones to enter the kingdom,

and that they should not hinder them.

And what's more is that unless you receive the kingdom

like a child, then.

You won't enter it. But what does that mean to

receive it like a child? Well, I think, actually, in

the recent context of what Jesus has been teaching us,

if we look at that it will be helpful for

us to understand exactly what like a child means. So

before Jesus gets to this point, he starts, or he's

been telling us parables different teachings. First, we had the

parable of the persistent widow who would not relent until

she got what she asked for.

And I don't know about you, but that sounds a

lot like a child to me.

I know, and can every day that I wake up,

I can guarantee you that my children are gonna ask

for three things without fail, And it's gonna and it's

can we watch a show? Can we play Minecraft? And

can we fight? Usually that's lightsabers. We have a new

baby that we got to welcome home just over two

months ago, and he will cry and cry until he

gets a struggle with his mama persistent. We had the

humility of the tax collector. And now you might have

children and know they can see anything but humble. But

I actually, and thinking about that, I don't know if

that's true when you actually think about it, they are humble.

The difference is they're just very bold and humble. They

are humble because they're completely dependent on you. That's the

reason they won't stop asking. The reason they throw fits.

The reason they continue to ask is because it's not

something that they can do or get on their own.

They need you to do something if anything's gonna happen.

The tax collector wasn't relying on his own works because

when he looked at himself, honestly, he's like, I don't

have anything to offer. The best he could do is

acknowledge his sin and be dependent on the Lord to

provide grace to him.

So we see persistent faith and humble faith.

And now Jesus says it's to such that belonged the

Kingdom of God, that unless you receive it with a

humble faith, that sense of dependence and reliance, that you

will not enter the kingdom. And now what's kind of

interesting in the text is we're gonna kind of get

a cool case study. We're gonna get two case studies

at this point that Jesus is just making. We're gonna

kind of see how this plays out when Jesus puts

this before people. So if you're taking notes, you can

write down the problem. And we're gonna take a look

at a story that might be familiar to you all

commonly referred to as a rich, young ruler. He's three

of the things that most people envy youth, riches and

power or notoriety, fame, authority. We're gonna see this man

who has it all in a sense come to Jesus

because he knows that he's still lacks something. We see

this in verse eighteen, and a ruler asked him, good teacher,

what must I do to an heirit eternal life? And

Jesus said to him, why do you call me good?

No one is good except God alone. Now it's kind

of an interesting interaction. This man comes to Jesus and

addresses Jesus.

As good teacher. He's not wrong.

He recognizes Jesus as some kind of faithful guide or

leader that might help him find the answer that he's

looking for. He says, what must I do to inherit

eternal life?

Now, what would you say to that question?

Someone came up to you and said, what must I

do to inherit eternal life? I remember a couple of

years ago that we had a young couple start coming

or like they were checking out our church and everything.

And one Sunday, at the end of worship, they came

up to the front of the stage, and the husband

asking for his wife said, hey, what does she need

to do to get up here to be on the platform?

To be How does she get here? What he's asking

is how does she get the opportunity to be on

the platform to be on the stage. You can tell

a lot about people's heart by the questions that they

ask in the way in which they ask them. And

Jesus here notice something kind of odd about how and

what this man asked him? On its faith, It seems

like the right thing to ask, a good, innocent question, But.

Jesus looks at the heart.

He asks the man, why do you call me good?

No one is good except God alone? And now some

of you actually use this text, so we need to

be aware of it. Some have used this text to

be like, see Jesus is saying that he's not God, Well,

that's just not true. Actually, I think it's much closer

to him being like, only God's good?

Why are you calling me good?

I think what he's doing is saying, do you know

who I am? This man had come to Jesus looking

for something. He'd come to the source, but he didn't

even know it, which we're going to see more evidence

of that fact here In a second, we know the

story of the woman at the well.

How at first she doesn't know who Jesus is.

She's having a conversation with him, but then once he

reveals himself to her, everything changes for her. Now we

get this young man who comes asking what must I

do to inherit eternal life? And we actually have to

slow down here too, because if we read over this

pretty fast, you might miss kind of the irony of

the situation, the irony of these texts being so close,

because Jesus just got done telling those around him that

unless they receive the kingdom like children, they will not enter.

Now this man comes and asks two very interesting things.

He says, what must I do to inherit? The first thing,

this man, this man is starting to look a little

bit more like the Pharisee in the prior example, the

one who had done all the right things and so

thought they were righteous. But here at least this man

knows he lacks something, But yet he saw has the

wrong way of trying to attain it, that being.

By good works. That is the idea that if I

do all the.

Right things, that God will save me, that God will

let me into his kingdom if I just do all

the right things. But Jesus just said, unless you receive

it like a child, you want to enter, And he's

saying what must I do, which brings us kind of

the second part of his ask, which he wants to

know what he has to do to inherit the kingdom.

And this one's actually kind of interesting and kind of

funny because the first question that would have for us

here is like, what is something that someone inherits? It's

an inheritance? Who inherits an inheritance? An error?

The child? Now what do people do to receive an inheritance? Nothing?

You exist?

You hope you didn't make your parents too mad, and

writes you out of the will, like, you don't do

anything to receive the inheritance. It's something prepared for them

to receive. If you're a child of someone, you're their

heir and you're waiting for your inheritance, Lord Willing. So

Jesus just told us that unless you receive it like

a child and are like a child, you want to

enter the kingdom. This man comes along asking what must

I do to inherit eternal life? But after Jesus makes

a remark asking why the man called him good.

Jesus.

Then that's kind of interesting because he's like, all right,

let's let's go your way.

Let's let's start you.

You wanna you wanna justify yourself. I got some more

questions for you. You want to justify yourself and get

eternal life by what you do. Let's check the list.

Let's start with the list. Let's go over it.

See them.

In verse twenty, jesuays, you know the commandments, do not

commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not

bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.

And the man says, all these I've kept from my youth.

So Jesus asked him, Okay, well, you know the commandments.

Don't see you murder, commit adultery, Honor your father and mother.

And honestly, this guy kind of has a crazy response.

He says, I've been nailing that. I've done that since

I was a kid. How many of you could say that?

None of us? We know.

Jesus drives these commandments even deeper than just the surface level.

He says, if you look with lust, you commit adultery

in your heart. If you hate someone, you commit murder

in your heart. Most of us have failed at least

couple of these since we.

Woke up this morning.

But this man confidently says, all these I have kept

since my youth. That's wild, which tells us that this

man didn't understand the depths of his sin. He was

like the Pharisee. He thought it was good because he

did all the right things. But Jesus still he doesn't

even get into that. He doesn't even bring up that point.

He's not like, you're wrong, he doesn't even do that.

And said he points out the most glaring problem in

this young man's heart. He says in verse twenty two.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, one thing,

you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute

to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven,

and come follow me.

But when he heard these things, he became very sad,

full of sorrow, for he was extremely rich. Now, at

first I want us say this to the side. We

might think, wait, is this something that all of us

are supposed to do? Follow Jesus? And the answer to

that is that for a lot of us, probably not.

But for some of us, maybe we see Jesus encounter

many rich people, and he doesn't tell all of them

to do this to this extent. But what is going

on here is Jesus gets to the thing that really

has this man's heart.

And how do we know that because the man hearing

this is deeply sorrowful. He goes away.

Why because Jesus asked him to give up his true treasure.

Jesus offers him treasure in heaven, but this man prefers

his treasure on earth, which shows us that this young

man had much bigger problems with obeying the commandments than

we thought. But he's the commandment. He the commandments he

claimed to be nailing. All had to do with your

loving your neighbor, like we can kind of do okay

with that. But then Jesus brought him back to the

first commandment and greatest commandment, that is, you shall love

the Lord your God with everything your heart, soul, mind, strings.

You shall have no other gods besides him. You shall

worship no other gods. But this man did worship another god,

his wealth, his stuff. And this man stood before the

God man Jesus Christ asked him how to get eternal life.

Didn't know who he was asking, and when Jesus did

tell him he wasn't willing to follow Jesus. This man

chose his stuff over Jesus. And it's to this that

Jesus then tells everyone around him about the dangers of wealth.

We're going to see that.

In verse twenty four, Jesus, seeing that he had become sad,

said how difficult it is for those who have wealth

to enter the Kingdom of God. For it is easier

for a camel to go through the eye of a

needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom

of God.

Now there's no secret meaning or loopholes for this. People

want that.

People want to find loopholes when Jesus is just very

clear about stuff, especially when it comes to us and

our money, us and our stuff, us and our treasures.

Jesus saying, if you have wealth, it's going to be

difficult for you to enter the kingdom. He makes this

crystal clear with the imagery he uses of a camel.

He guys, know what a camel is? You ever seen

a camel? They're actually kind of big, you know, and

a needle, the eye of a needle that's hard enough

to just put the thread through the needle. That can

be hard enough sometimes, so the chances are slim to

try and get a whole camel through the eye of

a needle. Chances are slim. Now, I don't know what

you could be feeling right in this moment and hearing this,

but I guess it's potential that some of you feel

similar to those who are also sitting there hearing this,

because this is then what they say. This is such

an interesting response, so really pay attention to this. Those

who heard it said, then who can be saved? Who

can be saved? But he said what is impossible with

man is possible with God. That's just a nugget, right there.

Take that one. Most people in that time and even

today view wealth as a form of blessing from God.

Now can be.

But that's also not always true. Do you remember Satan

also offered Jesus everything, all the kingdoms of the world.

So just because you're rich, just because you're king of

the world, doesn't mean that's a blessing from God. Right,

So it's not always the case. Also, a lot of

us might be like, oh, sick, it's gonna suck for

those rich guys. Good thing, I'm not rich. Good thing

I'm not wealthy. Problem is we don't view ourselves is

very wealthy, but we should not count ourselves out. Many

of us, because of our greedy hearts, might not realize

how discontent and ungrateful we are with the wealth that

we do have. We constantly play the comparison game and

think that just because we aren't launching rockets into space

for fun, that we aren't also wealthy. That's just not true.

My wife and I have been watching a show about

the Oregon Trail. We are so wealthy, you guys. We

have running water everywhere all the time. We have food,

and we complained about the prices. I get that, we'll

go to the restaurant. We're upset about it. This costs

so much. We didn't buy the ingredients, prepare the food,

or package it, or clean up the mess to make

it or eat it.

We're like.

The people living on the street, and sometimes it's hard

not to notice the smartphone in their hands, the smartphone

in our own pockets, Computers millions times more powerful than

got us to the moon. If you believe, then I'm

just kidding.

I'm just kidding. It's a joke.

It's a joke that is an indictment, and that is

not a statement. All I'm saying is that for a

lot of us, we're more better off than we are not.

We think we need more than we do, we want

more than our bellies are made for, and we spend

more time thinking about what we don't have and being

grateful for what we do have. And the reason all

of this needs to be said is because when Jesus

says how difficult it is for the wealthy to be saved,

the response from those around Jesus is.

And ha ha, that's.

Going to show those billionaires. That's not the response the people.

There's all kinds of people around Jesus and their response,

and they're not all wealthy as some might regard it,

and people around them saying, well, the wealthy aren't getting in.

That's how difficult it is. Who can be saved? Who

is going to be able to get in?

But Jesus's response is what's impossible with man, impossible with man,

it's possible with God. Jesus speaks to their hopelessness or

their hopeless response of salvation for anyone. He says, what's

impossible for man is possible for God, and that is

such good news that is such good news is that,

just like that child receiving an inheritance, there is nothing

I can do of my own accord to save myself

or earn it. But instead I humbly received the gift

of salvation given in Jesus Christ.

That's it. Now, we're not done yet. Because you think, okay,

made your point. It's pretty cool.

Believe it to Peter to pipe in with his observation.

Good old Peter.

He brings something up to Jesus, which in response, Jesus

gives us this beautiful, beautiful promise. Peter said, see, we've

left our homes and followed you.

Such a great response, Jesus, we did it so like

what's up?

And he said to them, truly, I say to you,

there is no one who has left house or wife,

or brothers or parents or children for the sake of

the Kingdom of God who will not receive many more

times or many times more in this time and in

the age to come eternal life. It's a much different response.

I need the band to come up, please, And I

did change my mind by the way, come that phunt.

So we see the contrast between the rich young ruler

who said he wanted eternal life, but wouldn't give up

what he truly treasured with those who instead treasured Christ.

And though they lost what they initially had, Jesus promises

them that not only would they receive many times more

in this life, but also they would receive eternal life

in the age to come. So the question is which

one is more childlike in their faith? The one who

trusts in his stuff more than Christ? Were those willing

to give up what they initially considered treasure and trusting

and following Christ is the.

One of supreme value.

Now, if my wife was here, or even if I

go home tonight and my wife asked me to throw

in my rock collection, which I hope she doesn't do,

because there awesome rocks.

What am I gonna do? Well? I hope that it's

very clear, you guys. I hope it is clear what

I'm gonna do. Here's a funny cardier. I'm getting rid

of my rocks.

Why because I love my wife so much more than

I love my rocks.

And here's the deal. Here's what's up.

My wife, out of love for me, might even let

me be.

As ridiculous as to keep these rocks that bring me joy.

I don't use them.

They're stored in the garage, hidden away for times like this.

She knows that I love them. But if she ever

thought that those rocks came first in my life over

my love for her, for my good, she should tell

me to leave them behind because I'm being crazy.

And silly.

As an example as that is, it's really no different

than how we are with our.

Earthly treasures in God. It's really no different.

One of the reasons that hurt my heart so much

when my daughter wanted that Barbie is because I could

see how much she loved it.

But I knew that it was garb.

And what hurt my heart so much is I was like, oh, no,

that's what I do.

That's what I do with my stuff. I love it so.

Much, and I'm sure God's like, come on, bro, they're rocks.

And I use it really as a silly example.

There's other things or finances we go all down the list.

You know what that is for you.

You know what the ridiculous stuff is, and you know

what the serious problem stuff is. And what's more is

I see my daughter and she wants this thing, and

I see how much she loves it. I know it's garbage,

and for me, it breaks my heart.

I would rather just take it to another store.

I'm gonna get you the real thing. I'm gonna get

you the real stuff. I'm gonna get you something better

and stronger, something that will last, so that she's not

gonna put her hope in some got a treasure that's

gonna break, fade, or disappoint her tomorrow. And Jesus offers

us something that will never fade, break, or disappoint, and

it's himself, He says, Come follow me.

But how often do we choose rocks instead?

How often do we pile up our earthly treasures so

high that we can't see Jesus on the other side.

Jesus has told us in other places that the Kingdom

of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field.

Now, when a man found that treasure in his joy,

in his.

Joy, he went and sold all that he had and

bought that field. In our texts today, that's exactly the

opposite of what we see happen.

We see the rich young ruler I prefer the treasures

he already possesses.

But the disciples in line with the parable are those

who left what they had behind because they treasured Christ

is worth more so the question that you need to

ask yourself today what I need to ask myself today?

So what do I treasure? What do actually treasure? I

forget about these things. I don't actually treasure these things.

I like these things. These are things that I actually treasure.

What are the things I actually treasure? What do I

actually put first? What I prioritize? What do I put first?

So we use those externals money, love?

What about ourselves? To put myself first? Do I treasure

myself is most important?

Getting my way?

We're told, what is it profit a man to gain

the whole world yet.

Lose his soul?

If we choose any other treasure, any other god to

worship than the One True God, we may have riches

in this lifetime. We might actually be rich in this lifetime,

but there's going to come a day when God calls

us to account, and those riches and those treasures will

do nothing for you except condemn you along with the

rest of your sin. Every single person in this room

has fallen short of the glory of God and is

in desperate need of saving. But here's the question. Do

you know that do you know that for yourself. Or

are you like the pharisee who thinks he's good because

of his works, because of his wealth.

Or the tax? Or are you like the tax collector

who knows he needs saving.

You're like a child, humble and dependent, knowing you have

nothing to offer or bring. All you can do is

rely on Christ and his provision on the Cross for

your sins to be saved, To receive.

The gift and give up the glory, that's the call.

Or are you childish like the rich young ruler thinking

you can have your cake and eat it too, saying

that you love God but denying him with every action

of your life.

Is here's the deal.

What Jesus is saying to this rich young ruler is

throw away your garbage and come chaste, true riches. Both

examples of the people today treasured different things and as

a result, followed different paths. The rich young ruler treasured

as riches and so followed them. The disciples treasured Christ

and followed him.

What you treasure is what you'll follow.

Christ says, where your treasure is there, your heart will

be also, so, he says, don't store up treasures here

on earth, where things waste away, but store up treasures

in heaven and all that's in Matthew six and the

Sermon on the Mount, and then the Sermon on the Mount.

He gives us the reason. He says, no one can

serve two masters. You will either hate the one and

love the other, or you will be devoted to the.

One and despise the other.

You cannot serve God, God and money, which is soberinging

exactly what we see today. But the objections or worry

may still come as it regards our daily needs, which

is why Jesus, after all that tells us not to

be anxious for your needs, but to trust him to

take care.

Of you like he does the rest of his creation.

He tells us to trust him like what, like a

dependent child, just like in our texts today. And by

the end of it he gives a very similar promise

as he gave in the text we saw today Matthew

six point thirty three. He says, but seek first the

Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things

will be added to you. So we have to ask ourselves,

what garbage has your heart? Or does garbage have your heart?

What has your heart?

Paul?

And he speaks of his former treasures compared to what

it's like to know Christ.

Says this in Philippians three eight through eleven.

He says, indeed, I count everything as lost because of

the surpassing worth of knowing Christ, Jesus my Lord, for

his sake, I have suffered the loss of all things

and count them as rubbish or garbage, in order that

I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not

having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,

but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness

from God that depends on faith, that I may know

Him and the power of his resurrection, and may share

his sufferings, becoming like him in death and his death,

that by any means possible, I may attain the resurrection

from the dead.

So what garbage still has your heart?

What earthly treasures are distracting you or choking out you?

Treasure? In Christ? What do you treasure? Where is it

leading you?

All Throughout scripture we see man choosing the created things

over the creator. But the only thing that's not going

to fade is him. When Jesus says, come and follow me,

he offers us salvation, He offers us eternal life. He

offers us a treasure worth more than anything this world

has to offer. Following Jesus is worth infinitely more than

it costs, and yet ultimately it costs you nothing. It

costs everything on the cross. It costs Christ everything on

your behalf, so that you can have everything in him.

The work has finished, the battle is won, and like

we see today, there's nothing on your behalf that you

can do to attain this salvation, But instead it's there

to be received like a child, day after day, humble,

persistent in our faith and reliance on Him, just like

little children.

The beginning of Gospel of John tells us this. It's

really cool.

Says he came to his own talking about Jesus, and

his own people did not receive him. But to all

who did receive him, who believed in his name, he

gave the right to become children of God who were

not born, or who were born not of.

Blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of

the will of man, but of God.

Christ is the greatest treasure ever given to mankind, and

for everyone who receives Him has been given the right

to become children of God, making them co heirs with Christ,

just like the widow, waiting for that day when God's

justice will come.

We wait until that day when the Lord brings the kingdom.

And gives it to his children, where he says this,

it's an incredible Matthew twenty five thirty four. Then the

King will say to those on his right, come you,

who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared

for you.

From the foundation of the world. It's beautiful.

There's an inheritance waiting for all those who are Christ's,

who are those who are in Christ, for all those

who are children of God and Jesus is worth infinitely more.

And really for the thing for us to reflect today

is is that what my life would reflect.
