-
the Bible in your hands every single day. It's our
-
spiritual food. If you waited from Sunday to Sunday to
-
eat real food, your body wouldn't be doing very well.
-
It's the same thing when we wait that long to
-
read our Bibles. So we want you to be reading
-
your Bible throughout the week. Today we're going to be
-
in verses eleven through twenty seven to us Luke chapter nineteen,
-
eleven through twenty seven. We're going to read the text,
-
and then we'll pray together verse eleven. As they heard
-
these things, he proceeded to tell a parable. Because he
-
was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the
-
Kingdom of God was to appear immediately, he said, therefore
-
a nobleman went into a far country to receive for
-
himself a kingdom, and then return, calling ten of his servants,
-
he gave them ten minus, and he said to them
-
engage in business until I come. Citizens hated him and
-
sent a delegation after him, saying, we do not want
-
this man to reign over us. When he returned, having
-
received the kingdom, he ordered the servants to whom he
-
had given the money to be called to him, that
-
he might know what they had gained by doing business.
-
The first came to him, saying, Lord, your mina has
-
made ten minas more. And he said to him, well done,
-
good servant, Because you have been faithful and very little,
-
you shall have authority over ten cities. And the second
-
came saying, Lord, your minah has made five minas. And
-
he said to him, and you are to be over
-
five cities. Then another came saying, Lord, here's your mina,
-
which I kept laid away in a handkerchief. For I
-
was afraid of you, because you are a severe man.
-
You take what you do did not deposit, and reap
-
what you did not sow. He said to him, I
-
will condemn you with your own words, You wicked servant.
-
You knew that I was a severe man, taking what
-
I did not deposit and depositing and reaping what I
-
did not sow. Why then did you not put the
-
money in the bank? And am I coming? I might
-
have collected it with interest, and he said to those
-
who stood by, take the minah from him and give
-
it to the one who has ten minas. And they
-
said to him, Lord, he has ten minus. I tell
-
you that everyone who has more will be given, but
-
from the one who has not, even what he has.
-
Will be taken away.
-
But as for these enemies of mine who did not
-
want me to reign over them, bring them here and
-
slaughter them before me. Let's pray, God, we thank you
-
for your word.
-
God.
-
We pray that we have ears to hear it today,
-
that you make it make sense in our hearts and
-
our minds, that you open up our minds to understand
-
what you have to say for us today. God, we
-
just pray that these words are clear, that we know
-
how to apply them to our lives. God, that everything
-
that's said today brings you glory and helps us be
-
better followers of you. So God, we just thank you
-
for this moment and give it all to you in
-
Jesus name. Everybody said, Amen, All right. We've been in
-
a series called Luke The Orderly Account of Truth, and
-
Luke went through and investigated everything that Jesus did through
-
throughout his ministry.
-
And wrote it all down.
-
And he wrote it all down, which is awesome because
-
now we get to have because of this orderly account,
-
we get to have certainty about who Jesus is. It's
-
pretty good news for us that someone went and did
-
all the homework.
-
For us, right.
-
They did the research, they did all the hard work,
-
the legwork. All we get to do is read it
-
and learn right. So because of his orderly account, we
-
can have certainty about who Jesus is. And ever since
-
Luke chapter nine, if you remember, way back in Luke
-
chapter nine, Jesus has been headed to Jerusalem. That was a.
-
Pinnacle moment in the whole book, the whole book of Luke.
-
He switched and said, now he has really resolutely set
-
his eyes or set his face toward Jerusalem, that Jesus
-
is going to Jerusalem with some determination. He's like, I'm
-
going to get there. And now he's getting really close
-
to Jerusalem. He's near Jerusalem, and he pass through this
-
city of Jericho on the way, and he's been performing
-
miracles all along the way, and he's been teaching the
-
crowds who've been following are from city to city to city.
-
And as he passed through Jericho.
-
He has this really cool interaction with a guy Zachieas, right,
-
and we preached on that last week. Zachieas is a
-
rich chief tax collector, very rich, very chief ye and
-
very tax collectory.
-
Also very short.
-
Right. He has to climate tree to see Jesus over
-
the crowds. But Jesus says something very important at the
-
end of his interaction with Zachieas. He said, for the
-
son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
-
For the son of Man came to seek and to
-
save the lost. And he said this to the whole
-
crowd of people that were following him. Right. He didn't
-
just say it to Zachieas, he said it to everybody.
-
And the crowd what do they do?
-
Their response was they grumbled at him, right, And they
-
grumbled at him every single time he actually tried to
-
seek and save the lost. So the crowd was doing
-
Jesus is doing his mission. Crowd starts grumbling. So Jesus
-
is basically reminding the people of his mission. He's like,
-
this is why I'm here, this is why I've come.
-
But Jesus isn't just reminding the people of his mission.
-
That's not all he's doing now because the people had
-
all kinds of ideas about how they thought all the
-
prophecy about God's forever king was going to be fulfilled. Right,
-
there will be a king on the throne of David forever.
-
This is like Old Testament prophecy stuff. And all the
-
people who follow God had these very incorrect ideas of
-
how they thought that was going to be fulfilled. So
-
Jesus spends a bunch of time correcting that, And our
-
text today shows Jesus using a parable to do exactly that.
-
He's correcting what the people's incorrect ideas of how these.
-
Prophecies are going to be fulfilled. He's correcting them.
-
He tells them, this is what's actually going to be like,
-
this is what the Kingdom of God is going to
-
be like. And in that process he also gives us
-
a really good lesson about stewardship, taking care of the
-
things that you've been given, how you handle the things
-
you have or the things that you've been given. Who
-
remembers being a teenager and your parents left you at
-
home when they went on trip or they just left
-
the house. You guys, remember that as a teenager they'd
-
leave you.
-
Well, it never fails.
-
They would always leave you what a list of things
-
you had to do while they were gone, right, They'd
-
always say, these are things I'd like for you to
-
do while we're away.
-
And I remember my parents. I don't know if you guys.
-
My parents are sitting right here by the way.
-
I don't know if they remember this, but there was
-
a time where they're getting ready to walk out of
-
the door, and the last thing they say to.
-
Me is don't throw any parties.
-
I mean, I didn't throw a party party, but I
-
definitely invite my friends over to play video games. So
-
I invite a bunch of my friends over to play
-
video games. We made pizzas, oven caught on fire. It
-
was a whole thing. But that's not the point. The
-
point is not me and my little Halo party. I
-
called it to play video games. No, the point is
-
that our parents would leave us with a list of
-
things they wanted us to do before they got back.
-
These are the things I'd like for you to have
-
done before we get back. And Jesse and I do
-
this with our boys every single day. They have chore lists.
-
Our oldest jackson usually gets home before us, and when
-
we get home, it's the first thing we asked was like.
-
Did you do your chores?
-
Did you do what we told you to do before
-
we got home? And I think that's what Jesus is
-
asking through this parable. I think that's actually what he's
-
kind of saying. What he's saying is I'm going away
-
for a while. I'm taking this from then to now
-
really fast. I'm going away for a while, is what
-
Jesus is saying. And when I return, how did you
-
do with what I left you to do? So I
-
called today's message, did you do your chores? Did you
-
do your chores? When your parents got back from the trip,
-
you were either rewarded or we were punished. And it
-
was determined based on how you did with what they
-
left for you to do. Right, most of the time,
-
we'd wait till the very last second to.
-
Do it all, really quo.
-
They always knew we were not slick. They knew that
-
we waited the last second to do it all. But
-
Jesus is saying the same thing here.
-
He is the king. He is going to leave for
-
a while, but he will return.
-
Jesus is going to come back, and when he does,
-
he will reward his faithful servants, and he will destroy
-
his enemies. That's the basis of what's being said here
-
that Jesus King Jesus is going away for a while,
-
but he will return, and when he returns, he will
-
reward his faithful servants and he will destroy his enemies.
-
Look at verse eleven because Luke sets this up for
-
us in a really important way and a very helpful way.
-
I think as they heard these.
-
Things, these things being all this stuff we just talked
-
about with Zacchius, right as he heard what he was
-
saying about the son of Man comes to see can
-
say the lost As he heard these things, or as
-
they heard these things, he Jesus proceeded to tell a
-
parable because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they
-
suppose is that the Kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
-
So this setup is really important. So it tell us
-
why Jesus is telling this parable. I'm is anybody else
-
a why guy or a why girl? I want to
-
know why? And this is great because we get that
-
why right here. We'd find out why Jesus is telling
-
this parable. It's because he's getting close to Jerusalem and
-
what happens in Jerusalem. He's prophesied about it, like at
-
least three times. By now, he's going to be crucified.
-
Jesus is going to get crucified, put to death in Jerusalem.
-
The first time Jesus came to Earth was to die
-
on the cross. That's why he came to be crucified, buried,
-
and raised from the dead.
-
Amen.
-
But that's not what the people thought was going to happen.
-
That's not what all the people who were following God
-
thought was going to happen. No, they thought that Jesus
-
was going to go to Jerusalem, wipe out the Roman
-
government and establish himself over all of Israel and all
-
of the world, to take over in a political and
-
governmental way. That's what they expected, and they expected that
-
it was all going to happen as soon as Jesus
-
got there, or as soon as God's forever king got there.
-
But that wasn't God's plan.
-
This wasn't the way that he was going to bring
-
about his kingdom.
-
Right. So Jesus tells this parable about a nobleman a king.
-
All. He's saying this whole thing to correct their misunderstanding
-
or their incorrect thoughts about how this was going to happen.
-
He tells a story about a king who goes away
-
to get a kingdom. Verse twelve. He says, therefore, after
-
finding out why he just told this parable, he says, therefore,
-
a nobleman went into a far country to receive for
-
himself a kingdom and then return. So the intention is
-
he is going to go away and he is going
-
to return.
-
That's the intention here.
-
Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas
-
and said to them, engage in business until I come.
-
So he calls ten of them together and gives them
-
all a mina and amna is about three months days wages.
-
Three months of the daily wage. Does that make sense?
-
So if he handed out ten and I had used
-
my calculator for this, that's a total of about two
-
and a half years wages that he's wanting to be
-
invested here, two and a half years total wages that
-
he wants them to invest with.
-
So what does he do.
-
He gives them the money and then he gives them
-
a task. Gives them the money and gives them a
-
task to do with it while he's gone.
-
So he gave him their chore list verse fourteen.
-
But as citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying,
-
we do not want this man to reign over us.
-
So we get this is a little bit of insight
-
into well the end of the parable that talks about
-
the enemies of the king. But we see that these
-
citizens have rejected their king. They're rejecting their king.
-
They don't like.
-
Him or want them to rule over them. And I
-
don't believe this is talking about the faithful servants. And
-
the reason I don't think this is talking about the
-
faithful servants is because of how the rest of the
-
parable unfolds. Right, we just read through the whole thing,
-
So it seems like these are some different citizens here
-
that hate this king, and they went as far as
-
to send a delegation behind him to tell others like,
-
we don't like this guy, and we don't want to
-
be ruled by this guy. And through their rejection, they're
-
showing that they are the enemies of this king. If
-
they are not with him, they are against him. But
-
after some time this king he returns and calls his
-
servants forward to report. When he returned, having received the kingdom,
-
he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money,
-
to be called to him that he might know what
-
they had gained by doing business. The first came before
-
him saying, Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.
-
And he said to him, well done, good servant. Because
-
you've been faithful and very little, you shall have authority
-
over ten cities. What did you gain with the money
-
I gave you? That's the question he's asking. Gave you
-
something to do? Now, how did it go?
-
Well? The first guy did awesome, right.
-
He turned one mina into ten, which is three months
-
wages into two and a half years wages. That's a
-
pretty sweet investment right there. It's not quite crypto good,
-
but you know it's close.
-
Just kidding. No investment advice from here.
-
But what happened after he reported to the nobleman the
-
results of his investment.
-
The nobleman rewarded him.
-
He gave him something, didn't he He gave him authority
-
over ten cities, probably of his new kingdom, which is
-
a foreshadowing, I think, or maybe a parallelism for this
-
illustration that Jesus is giving.
-
But the servant was rewarded for his faithfulness.
-
He did what the nobleman told him to do, and
-
the nobleman rewarded him.
-
But what about the second servant?
-
He comes forward, and he said, Lord, your mina has
-
made five minus. And he said to him, and you
-
are to be over five cities. So, after seeing the
-
first guy get a reward, the second guy's like me,
-
next call on me, pick me a teacher. Right, He's like,
-
I want to tell you how I did. He saw
-
the first guy get rewarded, so he says, I turned
-
one into five. And this faithful servant was rewarded as well.
-
He was rewarded with authority over five cities. But what
-
about the third servant when he came forward? How did
-
that go? Then another came saying, Lord, here is your mina,
-
which I have kept laid away in a handkerchief.
-
For I was afraid of you because you are.
-
A severe man. You take what you did not deposit
-
and reap what you did not sew. He said to him,
-
I will condemn you with your own words, You wicked servant.
-
You knew that I was a severe man, taking what
-
I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sew.
-
Question Mark, why then did you not put my money
-
in the bank? And am I coming? I might have
-
collected it with interest? The servant did nothing with the mina.
-
He was told what to do and instead did not
-
do anything with it. He hid it in the handkerchief.
-
He didn't do what he was told. He didn't even
-
do the bare minimum. It like it costs you nothing.
-
I'm trying to use the word like a costs you
-
no energy to just put it in the bank and
-
sit and let it collect interest. Right, it doesn't really
-
cost you any energy to do that. He could have
-
at least done that the bare minimum, but he didn't
-
even do that. But he said it was because he
-
was afraid of the nobleman. He was afraid. He claimed
-
that the nobleman was, what he said, a severe man
-
who takes what he doesn't deposit and reaps what he
-
didn't sew. So how does a nobleman respond to that?
-
He says, that's what you think of me, then I
-
will treat you exactly that way. That's what the nobleman
-
does in this situation. That's what you think of me,
-
Then that's why I'm gonna treat you. But I want
-
to pause here and talk about something that I think
-
is really important. I don't know, maybe God was just
-
putting on my heart as I was reading to the
-
text and wrestling over it when I was studying it.
-
But what we believe about people will influence or affect
-
the way we affect the way we interact with them.
-
If you don't believe me, If someone is believed to
-
be a known gossip, are you gonna tell them a secret? No,
-
of course you're not gonna tell him a secret. You're
-
not gonna give them any information because they're not gonna
-
keep it to themselves. If you know someone can't keep
-
their mouth shut, you're not giving them any sensitive or
-
secret information. You have now adjusted, or your interaction with
-
that individual has been affected based on your belief about
-
who they are. Or how about this, have you ever
-
known someone who gets their feelings hurt easily? We all
-
know someone like that. We're much more sensitive and how
-
we say stuff to people, we will handle them much
-
more gently. Are the wives elbowing the husbands right now?
-
In here? I'm a little sensitive. I don't lie. Yeah,
-
I've read there with you.
-
So sometimes we've gotta put the kid gloves on right
-
when we talk to these people who are a little
-
more sensitive. So we do adjust the way we interact
-
with people based on our belief. But I think this
-
also applies with how we interact with God. What we
-
believe about God determines how we interact with him. What
-
we believe about God determines how we interact with him.
-
So if we believe him to be a big, scary, mean, God,
-
how do we interact with that? Well, maybe we'll cower
-
before him, never asking him for anything. We may even
-
struggle to run to him and repentance when we're sinning.
-
That's the opposite of what we should do in both accounts.
-
Right.
-
What if we believe God to be a loving and
-
forgiving father, that's a pretty sweet one. Then we may
-
have no problem coming to him for anything and everything,
-
which we should. But maybe we don't take our battle
-
with sin seriously because we know he'll just forgive us.
-
What if we believe God to be a generous God
-
who provides for his children, we never have to worry
-
about having what we need in life. What if we
-
believe him to be a holy, perfect and sovereign God, Well,
-
we may not feel worthy to stand before him.
-
That's why we need Jesus.
-
There's a big hint in there, right, Because in our
-
own we're not worthy to stand in front of him.
-
We need Jesus. But God tells us all through scripture
-
what he's like. He tells us, He tells us exactly
-
what we should believe about him. He's like, this is
-
who I am, this is how I am, and.
-
This is what we should believe.
-
We should believe what he says about himself, right, not
-
what the world says about him. Don't believe what other
-
people say about him. What does he say about him?
-
He is truth. He is the one who gets to
-
decide who he is and how he is, and then
-
we get to believe that. I'm not gonna lie. God
-
says a lot about who he isn't here. It's a
-
big book, right, It's a lot. Every attribute about himself
-
that we learn. We got to understand this. He's all
-
of them perfectly, all of them perfectly. If he says
-
he's one thing, he's that thing perfectly. If he says
-
he's another, he's also that other thing perfectly. If he
-
says he's a third thing, woe three. I thought it
-
was only one of the No. Three, He's all three perfectly.
-
He's all of his attributes perfectly. But we can't go
-
too far in any direction with any of them, And
-
what do I mean by that? For instance, everybody knows
-
that God is love. Even the world who doesn't follow
-
God knows that God is love.
-
Right.
-
God is love, but he's also just, so he's fully
-
love and he's fully just both of them.
-
Right.
-
And we've seen people go too far down the God
-
is Love path before, haven't we Well, that leads to
-
all kinds of weird places. If you say God is
-
only love and you just run all the way down
-
that path, you end up in weird places like, well,
-
if God is love, then why would a loving God
-
send people to hell?
-
Or why would you let them go to hell?
-
If you go too far down the God is Love
-
path and ignore all the other attributes about who God is,
-
you go too far down that you end up believing
-
in universalism. Universalism as there is no hell and everyone
-
goes to heaven. There's one very, very big problem with
-
that theology.
-
That's not what the Bible says, That's not what God says.
-
So we can't go too far down the route of
-
God is love even though he is love, because he's
-
perfectly all his attributes all at the same time. Sin
-
has to be dealt with and because of that, That's
-
why we know God is not just love. He's also just,
-
and sin will be dealt with. That's why Jesus had
-
to die on the cross to pay the penalty for sin.
-
That's why Jesus had to die. God is just by
-
dealing with sin, but he's also loving by providing a
-
means for jesus death to be applied to us. He's
-
both fully and we didn't deserve it. Oh, he's also gracious,
-
fully and merciful.
-
Fully.
-
The whole reason I'm talking about this and understanding the
-
different attributes of God fully is because what you believe
-
about Him will determine how you interact with him. So
-
we have to believe the right thing about God so
-
that we interact with him. And I think that's the
-
same thing we're seeing Jesus talk about in this parable.
-
The servant believed one thing about the nobleman, and he
-
told it to the nobleman's face, and it caused him
-
to believe or excuse me to behave in a certain
-
way or interact.
-
With him in a certain way.
-
And the nobleman responded by being exactly how the servant
-
expected him to be. So let's see what he did
-
verse twenty four, And he said to those who stood by,
-
take the minah from him and give it to the
-
one who has ten mina. And they said to him, Lord,
-
he has ten minas. I tell you that to everyone
-
who has more will be given, but from the one
-
who has not, even what he has, will be taken away.
-
The king took the mina from the wicked servant and
-
gave it to the one who made ten. But he's
-
already got ten. Everyone's like, that doesn't make sense. Why
-
are you give it to him he's already got ten.
-
And the response is, yes, I know, everyone who has
-
more will be given, but for the one who has
-
not even what he when he has, oh my gosh,
-
even what he has will not be taken. I'm really
-
learning how to read, apparently, But what point is Jesus
-
making here? Like, what is he trying?
-
What is he getting at? This has to do with stewardship.
-
What did you do with what I left for you
-
to do? Stewardship?
-
They were all given what they had, all these servants, right,
-
they were all given The mina was given to them,
-
meaning it wasn't something they had, It wasn't something they
-
crafted or created, it was given to them, right, we're
-
all tracking, Okay, the ones who did well with what
-
they were given were given more, but the ones who
-
did poorly with what they were given was taken away.
-
It was taken away.
-
And I think that this is most I mean most
-
theologians push in this direction as well, but that this
-
is most likely an indictment against the religious leaders of
-
the day specifically has much grander ramifications, but an indictment
-
against them because they were the ones who had been
-
given leadership over the people. They've been given that responsibility,
-
but they weren't good stewards. They did not steward that leadership. Well,
-
they did not steward that responsibility. Well, they didn't do
-
what God told them to do.
-
They didn't do their chores.
-
So what is Jesus saying here, God's going to take
-
away what they had? Kind of the band come up,
-
please or Aidan, whoever's coming up. So he took away
-
what they had. And the last thing this nobleman did
-
was he dealt with his enemies. Right, so we see
-
that in the last verse there twenty seven. But as
-
for these enemies of mine who did not want me
-
to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them
-
before me. That seems hardcore personally, but king's gonna king, right,
-
this is what they do, and when that happens, everyone's like,
-
long live the king.
-
That's what we do.
-
But the enemies of this nobleman, this king, were brought
-
before him and slaughtered. So, just to like really quick
-
recap these short verses, there's a king who is going
-
away for a while.
-
He's given his servants a job to do until he
-
gets back.
-
When he returns, he rewards his servants based on how
-
they did, and he slaughtered his enemies. You guys, see that.
-
That's a pretty quick summary, right. There's a king who's
-
going away for a while. He gives his servants a
-
job to do while he's gone. He returns and he
-
rewards the servants for how they did and destroys his enemies. Well,
-
Jesus is about to get to Jerusalem where he's going
-
to be crucified.
-
He's going away for a while. That's what that means.
-
He's going to be crucified and he's going to go
-
away for a while, but one day.
-
He will return.
-
He's coming back, and when he returns, it will be
-
to judge the living and the dead to judge every
-
single one of us for how we did with what
-
he told.
-
Us to do or what he gave us to do.
-
The faithful servants will be rewarded and get to enter
-
the joy of their master. The same story is told
-
in the Talents in the Book of Matthew, and I
-
love part of the reward was enter the joy of
-
your Master.
-
I love that.
-
So the faithful servants are rewarded, but the enemies of
-
the Lord will be destroyed.
-
They will be destroyed.
-
And right now we live in the in between at
-
the time, and when Jesus said this, he hadn't left yet.
-
He's left now.
-
Right when I say left, you know, he's sitting at
-
the right hand of the Father in heaven right waiting
-
to be told to come down and start judgment.
-
But Jesus that hadn't He hadn't left yet.
-
So when he's saying these words out of his mouth
-
to these people and we read this parable, he hasn't
-
left yet. So these people are like, what is going on?
-
I think Pastor Duncan talked about it a couple of
-
weeks ago talking about our perspective based on contrasting to
-
the perspective of those in scripture who haven't seen what
-
we've seen. We have the benefit of having seen a
-
lot more stuff than they did at that moment. So
-
when Jesus is telling them, I'm gonna go to Jerusalem,
-
I'm going to die.
-
And I'm gonna be raised again, They're.
-
Like, what are you talking about? Jesus, God hid those
-
things from them, but it's been revealed to us. Now
-
we get to see these things, and so now we
-
know what Jesus is saying. When he says the king
-
is going away for a while and will return, he
-
gets crucified and he goes away for a while, but
-
he will return. King Jesus has gone away to prepare
-
his kingdom. This nobleman went away to go get his kingdom.
-
I mean, that's pretty on the head, right, and we're
-
all waiting for his return. So my question is are
-
we busy taking care of the list he gave us?
-
Are we busy taking care of the list that.
-
He gave us?
-
Are we doing our chores? When the Master returns, will
-
he find us at work? But I guess before we
-
get too far into that, really, the first question I
-
should ask is are we one of his servants or
-
are we one of his enemies? It's kind of an
-
important question to know. So the first and most important question,
-
because when Jesus returns in power and glory, in strength
-
as the king, every single knee will bow and every
-
single tongue will confess that Jesus's Lord.
-
Nobody escapes that dead or alive. No one escapes that.
-
Every single knee will bow, and every single tongue will
-
confess that Jesus Christ is lord. And that will either
-
happen as a willing servant who submits to Jesus's king
-
and savior, or that will happen as a rebellious person
-
who rejects his his lordship and is forced to bow
-
and then further or in the future then destroyed. And
-
for those who this is a complete side note. Just
-
if you've studied in the idea that what's it called
-
when everyone's destroyed and there's no hell?
-
What's that called?
-
You guys? Remember annihilationism. We're not talking about anhilationism here.
-
That's not biblical.
-
So the only way for us to not be found
-
as one of his enemies, but to be one of
-
his servants, is to turn to Jesus that's the only
-
way to confess with your mouth that Jesus's Lord and
-
believe in your heart that God raised them from the dead.
-
Because if you look to Jesus and believe, you're forgiven
-
of all of your sins, past, present, future, and you
-
get to spend eternity face face to Jesus.
-
In perfection, that's amazing. That's such good news. That's not
-
based on the things we do.
-
We don't have to do enough good things to make
-
it into heaven or to make it into eternity. I
-
should say that internal peace with Jesus. No, it's based
-
on what he did. All we have to do is
-
believe in him. That's how we're found to be his
-
servants and not his enemies who get destroyed. So let's
-
now go back and close with this talking about us
-
as his servants. As his servants, Are we serving him?
-
That's what a servant does. Are we serving him? Are
-
we in his service? Do we do what he tells
-
us to do? How are we doing with what he
-
left for us to do? Because the Lord rewards his
-
servants for how they did while he was away. Now,
-
the Bible, like I said earlier, is a big book
-
there's a lot to keep us busy in there. We
-
know that if you read it for a little bit,
-
you're like wow, I mean understanding it first off is
-
one thing, so you gotta study, and then coming down
-
to all the lists, like what do I gotta do?
-
There's a lot in there to keep us busy. But
-
I have a list here of a few things just
-
to go through. So how are you doing with telling
-
others about Jesus? It's kind of an easy one to
-
talk about sharing the gospel message with those around you,
-
the lost and dying world around you, people who are
-
perishing in their sins, never experiencing the forgiveness and redemption
-
of Jesus Christ.
-
Telling others about Jesus.
-
How are we doing about with growing in my knowledge
-
of him? Just reading the Bible part of how we're
-
transformed in His images through knowledge of him. So do
-
we learn about who Jesus is? Do we read our Bibles?
-
Do we learn about who God says he is? And
-
believe that? How are we doing it? Praying without ceasing?
-
I forget to pray all the time, be in constant
-
fellowship with the Lord. How am I doing at loving
-
others or just being loving? But they don't deserve it,
-
neither did you.
-
That's kind of a point.
-
How are you doing it forgiving others when they do
-
harm to you, whether that's physical or otherwise. What about
-
keeping no record of wrong? I mean, I forgive them,
-
but they've done this like twelve times. It's keeping a
-
record of wrong. How am I doing it being generous?
-
Or do I find every reason not to be generous?
-
Or can I find every excuse for why I don't
-
have to be generous? How am I doing it putting
-
my flesh and my sin to death. Here's a big
-
difference between falling off the horse and climbing back up
-
and falling off the horse and rolling around in the mud.
-
How am I doing it actually fighting my sin? How
-
am I doing it putting love for Jesus over everything
-
else in my life? It's a subtle one that I
-
forget all the time. I put all kinds of other
-
stuff as higher importance. And there's sometimes things He told
-
me to take care of, like my family.
-
It's kind of a side note on that.
-
Like there was many years ago I had this vivid
-
picture in my mind. I can't remember where I was
-
reading in scripture, but I had this picture of me
-
being in the living room of the first house we owned,
-
and I just the door was dumb because it opens
-
right in the middle of the living room.
-
It's just a terrible lay out for how house. But whatever.
-
So I had this image of Jesus coming and knocking
-
on my door. And the way our door was set
-
up is it would open up in and then we
-
had a white like metal screen door. And so I
-
hear the door knock, I walk up to the door.
-
I open the door and look and I see Jesus
-
standing on the other side of that screen door, and
-
all he said was come with me. And in that moment,
-
I was like, okay. I felt like God was telling me,
-
like what are you going to do? And there's a
-
bit of a bit of me that's like, okay, Jesus,
-
let me go grab my family real quick. My wife
-
and at the time we only had one son. It
-
was like, let me go grab them real quick. But
-
I heard in my I don't know, like God in
-
my head and my heart, whatever it was, he was like,
-
just walk out the door and follow me. So it's like,
-
do I put And that's like the hardest thing, Like
-
if you have to love him more then father, mother, brother,
-
a sister. Right, that's what he tells you. So I'm
-
sitting here, do I put my love for Jesus over
-
everything else in my life?
-
Even my own family?
-
Now? I think if he's calling you, he's gonna call
-
your family. I'm not telling you to say, all right,
-
see you later, family, I'm gonna go follow Jesus in
-
some other country. I really think he called you to
-
lead them. Well, husbands, but who's first? Who's first?
-
How am I doing it? Putting him first over literally everything? Husbands?
-
How are you doing it loving your wife or living
-
with your wife in an understanding way? Do you even
-
seek to understand her? Or leading and loving your wife?
-
Like Christ loved the church? What did Jesus do for
-
the church? He died for the church to sanctify her,
-
washing her with the word Ladies, wives, how are you
-
doing it submitting to your husband? But he's not leading
-
me the way Christ led the church. I don't think
-
there's an exception as long as it's not sinful. How
-
are we doing to submitting to our husbands about not
-
being anxious? I put that one on the list last
-
second because I was like, man, that's just like in
-
the Bibles, I do not be anxious or be anxious
-
for nothing. I don't know of a sin. We all
-
like just blatantly disregard more than that one.
-
We're worried about everything all the time.
-
I mean to trust the Lord, trust him. The list
-
goes on, though, right. I took forever going through that list,
-
and it's not even that long. There's so many more
-
things in scripture that we're told to do, told to believe,
-
told to think, how to be all of it? I mean,
-
Jesus does simplify it for us with the greatest commandment, right,
-
love the Lord your God with all your heart's soul,
-
mind and strength. And love your neighbor as yourself. All
-
the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.
-
It's really what it all boils down to. But oftentimes
-
if we just see this big picture idea, which I'm
-
a big picture guy, it lets me not focus on
-
the real, practical, very specific things I gotta do. Jesus
-
is going to return, The King is going to return.
-
He's gonna return like a thief in the night. You
-
don't know when it's gonna happen. Only God, the Father knows.
-
It's Whaten, the God and Father says. Now is the
-
time we don't know, so we must always be ready.
-
We always have to be ready at any moment that
-
the Master would find us at work when he returns,
-
just like our parents when they return from the trip.
-
Did you do your chores? God will reward us for
-
how we did with what he left us to do.
-
So let's get to work. Amen, Let's get to work.
-
Can you guys stand on your feet please,
