Luke, The Orderly Account of Truth - Praise the Savior King - Luke 19:28-40

Okay, let's pray before we get into anything else. God,

we thank you for today. We thank you for this

moment to set everything else aside and focus on You

and your word and the message that you have for

us today. God, give us open ears to hear it,

give us open hearts to receive it. And God, let

us put it into practice the things that you would

challenge us to grow in today. So God, we thank

you for this moment. Give it all to you for

your glory. In Jesus name. Everybody said, Amen. Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord from the heavens. Praise him in the heights.

Praise him all his angels, Praise him all his hosts.

Praise him, Sun and moon, Praise him, all you shining stars.

Praise him, You highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens.

Let them praise the name of the Lord. For he commanded,

and they were created, and he established them. Forever and ever.

He gave a decree, and it shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures

in all deeps, fire inhale, snow and mist, stormy winds,

fulfilling his word. Mountains and all hills fruit trees, and

all cedars, beasts and all livestock, creeping things and flying birds,

kings of the earth, and all peoples, princes and all

rulers of the earth. Young men and maidens, together, old

men and children, Let them praise the name of the Lord.

For his name alone is exalted. His majesty is above

earth and heaven. He has raised up a horn for

his people. Praise for all his saints, for the people

of Israel who are near to him. Praise the Lord. Amen,

Praise the Lord. All things have been created to bring

God glory. All things, everything has been made to praise

his great name.

We just read.

Everything, from the angels to the animals, from the stars

to the sea, from the rains to the rivers, from

men to maidens, from mountains to mole hills, from the rulers,

all the way down to the rocks. It has been

created to bring Him glory and to praise His great name.

When the wind blows through the trees and they start

to dance, they're showing the glory of God and praising

Him with their beauty and movement. As the waves crash

on the sand at the beach, they're showing the might

of God giving him glory as we stand powerless against it.

You guys ever looked up at the night sky on

a clear night and seen all the stars? You ever

tried to count them all? There's a lot of them

up there, right. I mean, we can only see it

very rarely in Washington, right because most time we have clouds.

But when there's no clouds, you look up and there's

a lot of stars up there. Did you know that

God breathed them all out? He spoke them into existence?

Says by the word of the Lord, the heavens were made,

and by the breath of his mouth all their hosts.

That's Psalm thirty three six.

For the record, the first thing we just read through

was Psalm one eight in case you were curious, But I.

Want to talk about the stars for a second. Are crazy?

The closest star to us right now, not counting the Sun,

is four point twenty five light years away. Does anyone

know how far a light year is? And it's like

a distance of time, but it's about five point eight

eight trillion miles trillion with a T.

It's very very far.

So that means the closest star to us is about

twenty five trillion miles away, twenty five trillion miles away

from us.

It's like, really really far.

And I did the math, and for us to travel

twenty five trillion miles, do you know what that's like.

It's like going around the circumference of the Earth three

billion times, three billion times. I don't even like driving

us to Tacoma. That's too far for me to drive

around the whole Earth. Three billion times is how far

away the closest star to us is in our galaxy.

And yet we can look up on a clear night

and sea at twinkling we can see its light twinkling,

because even the stars are dancing before the Lord, they're

praising him, and these stars have to be pretty big

and pretty bright to be able to see him from

that far away, right, twenty five trillion miles away, And

there is one particular star in our own galaxy that

is one hundred thousand times bigger than the Earth, one

hundred thousand times bigger than the Earth. We think Earth

is big, but that's just because we're small. It takes

us a while to travel anywhere, right, But just one

of the stars, and not even the biggest star in

our galaxy, just one of them is one hundred thousand

times bigger than the Earth. And one guy put it

like this, He said, if Earth were the size of

a golf ball, Right, So picture a golf ball. If

this is the size of Earth, and you travel to

New York City and set it on the sidewalk next

to the Empire State Building and then stacked five more

Empire State buildings on top of that.

That's how big.

This other star is in comparison to the Earth. God

is huge. God is huge. One other star in our

own galaxy. The heavens above sing his praises, the Sun

and the moon and the shining stars, everything in all

of creation magnifies His name by its very existence.

And if I have one goal for you today, or

not just you, for me too.

If I one goal for us today is that we

would lead today praising our great God and King Jesus.

So I called today's message Praise the Savior King. I

asked the worship team if they could change the last

song to save your King, because I was like, it

just makes sense and fits, and they were cool and

they're like, yeah, it's super.

Easy, let's just do that. He still mad about it.

Praise the Savior King. Grab your bibles, open up to

Luke chapter nineteen. That's what we're gonna be. We're going

through the Triumphal entry today. If you don't have a Bible,

we have a bunch of them at the resource desk.

Please grab one, take it, keep it. We want you

to have a Bible. But we've been in a series

while you guys are turning there, we've been in a

series called Luke The Orderly Account of True. Luke the

Orderly Account of Truth. And Luke went and investigated all

about Jesus' life and ministry while he walked the earth.

And because of this, like, we can know the truth

about who Jesus is. And that's a huge blessing for us.

Because of this orderly account, we can know the truth

about who Jesus is and what he taught. And today's text,

what we're going to see is that it emphasizes that

Jesus is the King that God has sent to Jerusalem.

One second, Yeah, it's an almost forty year old proof,

but today's text is going to emphasize that Jesus is

the king that God sent to his people. That's what

it's going to emphasize that he's the king that was

sent to rule over Zion, and that Jesus is going

to fulfill even more prophecy, confirming that he is this king,

the one who brings salvation to his people, and as king,

he will receive praise.

He will receive praise.

We're going to see Jesus is the righteous king sent

by God who brings salvation to his people, and he

will receive praise. Okay, we're luke. Chapter nineteen, verses twenty

eight through forty. You guys, ready, let's read through our text.

And when he had said these things, he went on ahead,

going up to Jerusalem. When he drew near to Bethphage

and Bethany, at the mount that is called all of It,

he sent two of the disciples, saying, go into the

village in front of you, where on entering you will

find a cult tied on which no one has ever

yet sat.

Untie it and bring it here.

If anyone asks you, why are you untying it, you

shall say this, the Lord has need of it. So

those who were sent went away and found it just

as he had told them. And as they were untying

the cult, its owners said to them, why are you

tying the colt, and they said, the Lord has need

of it, and they brought it to Jesus, and throwing

their cloaks on the colt, they sat Jesus on it,

and as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on

the road. And he was as he was drawing near

already on the way down the Mount of Olives. The

whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise

God with a loud voice for all the mighty works

that they had seen, saying, blessed is the King who

comes in the name of the Lord, Peace in heaven

and glory in the highest And some of the Pharisees

in the crowd said to him, Teacher, rebuke your disciples.

He answered, I tell you, if these were silent, the

very stones would cry out. So Jesus, in this moment,

did just finished warning the people that he was going

to be going away for a while. He's like, I'm leaving,

but I'm going to give you a job to do

while I'm gone. So he leaves work for his servants

to do while he's gone. But after he's been gone

for a while, he said, I'm going to return. That

he's gonna come back, and when he does, he's going

to reward his faithful servants and do what.

To his enemies. You guys, remember, it's going to destroy

his enemies.

Right, he will reward his faithful servants and he will

destroy his enemies. And so our lesson that we took

from that is we should probably just do what he

told us to do. Right, If he gave us a job,

maybe we should just do that and let us be

found as the faithful servants who get the reward. And

he said all of this as he was getting close

to Jerusalem. And now he's like mega close to the city.

If you look at where beth Phage and Bethany are

these towns or these villages, because they're really tiny, they're

only about two miles away from the temple in Jerusalem.

So he's really close.

And some would argue even closer than that, depending on

how the road was laid out, but it's only about

two miles away. So Jesus sends two of his disciples

ahead with a job. And so let's look at verse thirty.

What are you telling them? He said, go into the

village in front of you, when where on entering it,

you will find a cult tiede on which no one

has ever yet sat, untie it and bring it here.

If anyone asks you, why are you untying it? You

shall say this, the Lord has need of it. Now,

I want to pause here and say, for just a moment,

unless the Lord makes it unbundantly and extremely clear.

I don't recommend doing this.

You probably shouldn't just walk up and take somebody's stuff

and say the Lord has need of it unless he

told you to do that, because that's theft.

Right.

So let's make sure that we're looking at the difference

between prescriptive and descriptive in the Bible.

Right. This is not telling us what we should do.

This is telling us what happened.

Right. So this situation is a little different, though, because

Jesus tells them what to do, and when they go there,

it's exactly the way he described. Everything happened exactly the

way he described it. Then, verse thirty two. So they

those who were sent, went away and found it just

as he told them. And as they were untying the cult,

the owner said to them, why are you untying the cult?

And they said, the Lord is need of it, So

they obeyed.

They did exactly what Jesus told him to do, and

it was exactly as Jesus had described.

But not only do they find.

This this this cult tied up, like Jesus is getting

it something right, There's a reason why he's making all

this happen. There's there's some bigger picture happening here. And

I say, there's divine purposes behind this encounter. It's not

just this random natural thing like, oh, hey, go in

there and find this this cult because you're gonna find

it tied up and I kind of just want it. No,

there's some divine purpose behind this, behind the borrowing of

this cult that no one had ever ridden before.

So what is that point? Like, what's the point of

all this?

Why would Jesus go out of his way to make

this very specific prediction?

Right?

Is he just being trying to do a cool trick

like it was exactly like I said, you see that right?

Pretty cool? Huh?

No, that's not what he's doing here, right, He's he's

There's nothing that God does that's arbitrary.

Nothing.

Everything is with purpose. What God does has purpose behind it.

We may not always know what that purpose is. Sometimes

we get the blessing of getting to know ahead of time.

Sometimes we don't, but everything that God does always has

a purpose. And the cool thing is for this particular moment,

we actually do know the reason why. We know why

Jesus was doing this exact specific thing, why he had

to have this specific cult, and why he made this

miraculous foretelling. And this is where it's actually really helpful

to know some of your Old Testament prophecy. I don't

know how often you guys go back and read it.

You totally should. There's so much to learn from the

Old Testament. It's not a old, outdated part of the Bible.

It is a crucial part of the whole story of God.

I don't know if you know this, but in the beginning,

when you create everything good, the end of the book,

he makes it all good again.

It's one complete story.

So it's helpful for us to know some of our

Old Testament prophecy that or have a really good reference Bible.

Right. Amen. Thank you for the scholars that did a

lot of the hard work for us.

But the reason that Jesus needed to ride this particular

cult into the city was to fulfill a prophecy, and

this a prophecy told by the prophet Zachariah. And Zachariah

chapter nine, it'll be on the screen, so you don't

have to turn there. But verse nine says, rejoice greatly, O,

daughter of Zion, shout aloud, O, daughter of Jerusalem. Behold,

your king is coming to you, righteous and having salvation.

Is he humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt,

the foul of a donkey? Do you guys see that?

This is why Jesus did what he did. This is

why Jesus was very specific about what his instructions were

and about what the disciples would find. Right before the

people's eyes. They were seeing prophecy, be fulfilled prophecy that

they would have heard as the people of God way

back when up hearing and being taught. They're seeing it

fulfilled right before their eyes. But this prophecy in Zachariah,

who is the prophecy about about the King of Jerusalem, right,

the King of Jerusalem. And it's a call for all

of God's people to rejoice and shout aloud because what

because their king is here. This is an invitation to

rejoice because your king is here, the King that is

righteous and brings.

With him salvation. Now that is some good news.

The King that is righteous and brings with him salvation.

And the way you're gonna know who this king.

Is is what.

It says it right at the end, humble and mounted

on a donkey, on a cult, the foul of a donkey.

This is the sign that they would see to know

who this prophecy is about. Jesus is revealing to the

people who he is. It is again, because he's done

it a lot in many different ways. He's continuing to

reveal who he is to the people, that he is

their king.

Jesus is the King. And at this revelation, what do

the people do? What did they do? Well?

They made a makeshift saddle out of their cloaks, didn't they,

and put it on the donkey, or excuse me, on

the colt, and they set Jesus on it so he

could ride into Jerusalemust keep reading through verse thirty six.

And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on

the road.

As he was drawing near already on the way down

to the Mount of.

Olives, the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice

and praise God with a loud voice. For all the

mighty works they had seen, saying, blessed is the King

who comes in the name of the Lord, Peace in

heaven and glory in the Highest.

Look at this.

This is the triumphal entry of the King of all kings.

And it's not done with chariots and trumpets like a

normal king would know. It's with a cult and some

cloaks and the crowd of people. This humble king, this

is how he This is his triumphal entry, This humble

king who is righteous and brings salvation. He rides on

a colt across a red carpet of cloaks and branches.

And while this is happening, while he's riding, what are

the people doing. The whole multitude of his disciples began

to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice. They're

lifting their voices shouting praises to God. They're laying down

their cloaks and praising the Lord. They're all shouting, blessed

is the King who comes in the name of the Lord,

Peace in heaven and glory in the Highest. You know

what they're doing is they're answering the call of Zachariah

in a prophecy that's what they're doing, right, because there

was this call to rejoice, to shout allowed for their king.

Rejoice greatly, shout allowed, your king is here. They're praising

their king, right, It's amazing. Can you imagine this, the

whole multitude of people shouting, you guys, remember beastquake. We've

talked about that enough. People shouting for Marshawn Lynch when

he got that touchdown, run that it's set off seismometers

and it looked like an earthquake. Crowds can cause a ruckus.

So can a handful of toddlers. But shoot to take

your pick, right, we can cause a ruckus as a

group doesn't. Rucus doesn't always mean bad, I guess right.

Cheering this this crowd is cheering and praising so much

they're causing an uproar as they enter and approach or

as they're approaching and entering the city. And not everyone

liked that. Not everyone liked it, right, But this is

where Jesus says something awesome. And I love when there's

mic drop moments on the Bible, and I think this

is totally one of those, Like Jesus Mike drop moments,

and some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, teacher,

they didn't call him king, they'd call him lord, they

call him master, They call him teacher. Teacher, rebuke your disciples,

rebuke the people that are following you. But he answered,

I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones

would cry out. I'm not going to really drop the mic,

but that's the mic drop moment. If these were silent,

the very stones would cry out. Pharisees like, tell them

to stop stop praising him. But Jesus says, if they

don't praise me, the very rocks under our feet we'll

start to cry out. The very rocks under our feet

would that creation is gonna do what creation was created

to do, praise God to bring him. All of creation

brings glory to God. All of creation sings his praises

by its very existence. So Jesus says, if I tell

them to stop, then creation will sing out. And I

think Jesus is making a really clear point. And I

haven't been putting very many points in the messages. So

here's a point for you guys. The King of all

kings will receive praise like that's a fact. The King

of all kings will receive praise now, in the future,

and forevermore. Jesus is the prophesied righteous king who brings

salvation to his people. He is worthy of all praise.

He's worthy of all of it, and he will receive it.

Nothing is going to stand in the way of him

receiving praise for all the wondrous works of his hands,

all the amazing things that he's done.

And I think it just adds to it.

Right at a base level, I'm like, his being, his essence,

just who God is, is already worthy of all the praise.

He didn't have to do anything good to deserve that praise, right,

and then he went into a bunch of great stuff,

like sending a sun for us. Amen, for all the

wondrous works of his hands. He is worthy of all praise.

I mean, we talked about it at the beginning. Open

our eyes, look around. It's a beautiful day today. We

can see things we don't usually get to see in Washington, Right,

it's amazing. I felt the sun on my skin. That's

kind of cool. I don't get to feel that very often.

We get to feel it's warmth. But when the rain

does fall and waters the earth, it's praising the Lord

for his provision on us. When the birds as they

sing their song. Who's been to the tulip festival. I've

only seen pictures. It's incredibly beautiful. The color, the colorful flowers,

the way the trees sway in the wind, the fact

that somehow we get oxygen from trees. That's kind of crazy,

worthy of praising the Lord for. Look at what he's created,

the massive multitude of stars in the night sky. All

of it displays God's awesomeness and it can't be denied.

All of it displays his awesomeness. But I think the

thing that we should praise him for the most is

that he's the righteous king who brings what we've said

it like seven times salvation to his people. I think

that's the thing that we should praise him for the most.

That Jesus brings salvation. Well, salvation is to be saved,

to be saved from. What.

What are we being saved from. We're being saved from sin.

We're saved from our own sin and the wrath of

God on us because of our sin. That's what the

salvation is for. That's what we're being saved from and

there's only one answer and only one remedy for that problem.

Only one, and it's what Jesus is writing into Jerusalem

for right now as we're reading in the text, this

is what Jesus is writing into Jerusalem for, to die

in our place, to pay the penalty for sin. I

think there's you guys know this. There's endless reasons to

praise the Lord. There really is endless reasons to praise

the Lord. But how easily do we forget? We were

just talking about this at the men's retreat a little bit,

because we do. We're just forgetful people. Remember that kid's song,

Count your blessings, name them one by one, count your

many blessings, see what God has done? Nockay, sweet there,

I was the only one kids church. Come on, we

sang that in kids church. These are my kids church, pastors.

Yeah, count your blessings.

Why do we recount them? Because we forgot them? We

need to remember the good things the Lord has done

and not. I mean we're just as a people, we

kind of just tend to focus on the negative stuff

and forget the good things.

We don't celebrate the victories.

So I think there's a big piece of us that

we need to urge each other to remember these amazing

things that God has done to push us to praise Him,

to remember these things. But just to say it again,

even though there are endless reasons of praise the Lord,

if you need to pick one, the one I think

you should pick is salvation. Like if you want to

start somewhere, start with salvation. Because before putting faith in Jesus,

we were all dead in our sins, dead in our sins,

not alive, and the only thing that we had to

look forward to for eternity was the wrath of God,

ending up in the lake of fire, where there's weeping

and gnashing of teeth, endless torment where the worm never dies.

That sounds terrible. That's all we had to look forward

to for all eternity. But God he did something to

rescue us from that. And how he rescued us from that.

The only way we get access to that being rescued

or that salvation is belief or faith in Jesus Christ.

To call him Lord of our life, to look at

him as the righteous king who brings salvation, the one

who is walking in our text, who is riding the

cult on the way into Jerusalem right now is to

call him Lord of our life, to call him King

of our life. And anyone who does that, anyone who

does that, it does not matter where you come from,

what you've done before.

Anyone who does.

That, who puts faith in Jesus Christ, receives forgiveness of

every single sin, past, present, in the future and gets

to look forward to everlasting life.

Amen. That's amazing.

Amazing news, everlasting life, face to face in the presence

of God, in peace for all eternity.

Do you guys feel peace every day? Right now? Let's

go nine years old? Peace every day. Life is hard.

But to be at peace with the Creator and I

know my eternity is set gives me a little peace.

Now I get to experience some of these things as

I look forward to the future. Glory of being face

to face with the with the eternal righteous King forever

in perfection.

That's amazing.

We get to look forward to that if we put

faith in Jesus, peace for all eternity, in the presence

of God. But the fact that Jesus would take what

I deserve for my sin on himself, that's reason to

praise him. That is reason to praise him. And not

just praise him, praise him with a loud voice, to shout,

to sing, to proclaim, Can I have the band come

up please? So, as we're reading through the text, it's

always helpful to say, Okay, what's being argued in the text? Right?

What point is kind of being made? What do I

got to understand from this?

And just to summarize in one nice short statement, maybe

this Jesus is the righteous king who brings salvation and

is worthy of all praise. So I think that's the

argument from our texts today, that Jesus is the righteous

king who brings salvation and is worthy of all praise.

So this is the argument. Then what's the natural next step?

What's the natural application we should take from this? How

should we apply this to our life?

What do you guys think? He read my notes? So

he had the cheat sheep.

That is the right answer, right, the natural reaction? What

was my goal for today? I want everyone leaving here

praising our God and King Jesus Christ.

That's what I want to be happening here today.

So the natural reaction or the natural application to the

argument for today is we should lift up a loud

voice and praise King Jesus. That's what we should be

doing right, to praise him for his mighty works, to

praise him for bringing a salvation, Thank you Jesus, to

join in all of creation and praise him. And to

be honest, I don't think we have a problem praising

Jesus in our hearts.

I don't think we have.

That problem really, unless you're not a believer today and

let's talk. But for those believers, I don't think that

you actually have a problem praising Jesus in your heart.

We're full of gladness as we praise Him in our

own hearts privately to ourselves, which we absolutely should do.

But when you read our text, it seems like something

else else is going on here, doesn't it. It doesn't

seem like the go in your room and shut the

door and pray in private to your father kind of text,

is it. No, it isn't showing a moment of private praise.

This isn't out loud public proclamation or praising of the Lord.

This is something that everybody could see and everybody could hear.

It's loud.

It's causing a ruckus. People in the city are starting

to be like, what's going on? I mean, this is

something we practice when we gather at church, right, we

sing songs. That's why we sing songs. Are part of

the reason we sing songs at the beginning, at the.

End of service.

Right, we're coming together and we're collectively lifting up praises

to the name of Jesus publicly.

That's what we're doing.

We're lifting our voice, says to his great name and

praising him together as his people are publicly praising Jesus.

But what about when we leave here, what about when

we leave the whole rest of the week.

Do we live a life that praises the Lord out loud?

Among others?

Do we live a life that publicly shows our love

of Jesus or publicly shows that he's our king? And

do we do that by everything that we say and.

That we do.

I mean, we don't have any problem praising stuff out loud.

Go to a football game, a baseball game, which we're

gonna be going to a Rainier's game sometime in the future,

so put that on your calendar.

Except for Ashley, for.

Those who know, she got hit in the face pretty

hard by a baseball, but she's a trooper. We don't

have any problem chearing in a football game or a

baseball game. We don't have any problem schearing for our

children when they're performing at a school function.

Right, go to a movie, all these new movies.

Which I didn't know was a thing, but literally clapping

and cheering when a big reveal happens in a movie.

That happens. We're appraising people. God designed us to do that.

We just point our praise at the wrong stuff. We

are appraising people. But what's the thing that we praise

the most publicly? What do we find ourselves praising publicly

the most?

What is it?

Do we fall short in praising the one who is

most deserving of all praise? And this isn't just me

beating you up. I'm looking in the mirror as I

was writing this message. How do I do? As Jesus

is writing into Jerusalem. The people are praising him with

a loud voice. Everyone can hear the commotion that's going on.

Is that how we praise the Lord? Can everyone hear it?

Can everyone hear me praise the Lord? Do I praise

the Lord like that out loud? Everywhere I go? Not

just when I'm alone and privately in our hearts, not

just when we gather here as the church? Do I

live a life that shows praise and adoration of King

Jesus everywhere? I kind of, as I was processing it

going over my notes earlier today, I wrote this question.

I don't know because it was more challenging for me.

I think, But is our savior, King Jesus the thing

we can't shut up about? John Piper said, I think

it was in the book Desiring God.

I highly recommend that book.

He said that joy isn't complete until it's been expressed,

which is totally true. We all know that because if

you go see an awesome movie, you walk out, what's

the first thing you want to do?

I'm let me tell somebody about it.

You eat the best steak you've ever had in your life.

You want to go tell somebody about it. You're like,

you gotta see this movie or you've got to try

this steak. It's the best thing you've ever had.

Why?

Because your joy wasn't complete until you expressed it. What

does that say about our joining the Lord? When is

our join the Lord complete when we've expressed it? Is Jesus,

my King Jesus the thing I just can't stop talking

about that? I won't shut up about. Is that the most?

Is that the thing that is on my lips the most?

Is he the one that I can't stop telling people about.

Listen to Psalm ninety six. This is the last text

I want to go through before we end. Psalm ninety

six says, Oh, sing to the Lord, a new song.

Sing to the Lord, all the earth, Sing to the Lord.

Bless his name, Tell of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory. Where say it somebody among the nations.

His marvelous works, among what all the peoples.

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised.

He is to be feared above other, above all gods.

For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols.

But the Lord has made the heavens. Splendor and majesty

are before him. Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, O, families of the peoples, Ascribe

to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord

the glory. Do his name, bring an offering, and come

into his courts. Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.

Tremble before him all the earth, Say among the who

the nations the Lord reigns. Yes, the world is established,

and it shall never be moved. He will judge the

peoples with equity. Let the heavens be glad, and let

the earth rejoice, Let the sea roar and all that

fills it, Let the field exalt and everything in it.

Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for

joy before the Lord, for he comes, For he comes
