  1. The series that we've currently been in is going through

  2. the Gospel of Luke. We title the series Luke the

  3. Orderly Account of Truth, and we've been going through this

  4. carefully investigated account of the life and ministry of the

  5. Lord Jesus. And our hope in this series is that

  6. as we examine this orderly account, that we will come

  7. to know the truth of who Jesus is better with

  8. the hopes that our faith would grow in the certainty

  9. of the person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Awesome,

  10. So if you would please open with me, we're gonna

  11. be in the twentieth chapter of Luke today. If you

  12. do not have a Bible, please we have some out

  13. on the resource desk for you to just go grab

  14. one so you can follow along with us. If not,

  15. we're gonna have it up on the screen. Butt once again,

  16. if you do not have a Bible, like you don't

  17. even own one, please just go get one and take

  18. one home with you. Today Luke chapter twenty, we're gonna

  19. be starting in verse one. This is God's Word. It says,

  20. one day as Jesus was teaching the people and the

  21. temple and preaching the Gospel, the chief priests in the

  22. scribes that the elders came up and said to him,

  23. tell us by what authority you do these things? Or

  24. who it is that gave you this authority. He answered them,

  25. I will also ask you a question. Now tell me

  26. was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?

  27. And they discussed it with one another, saying, if we

  28. say from heaven, he will say, why did you not

  29. believe him? But if we say from man, all the

  30. people will stone us to death, for they are convinced

  31. that John was a prophet. So they answered that they

  32. did not know where it came from. And Jesus said

  33. to them, neither will I tell you by what authority

  34. I do these things? And he began to tell the

  35. people this parable. A man planted a vineyard and let

  36. it out to tenants, and went into another country for

  37. a long while. When the time came, he sent a

  38. servant to the tenants so that they would give him

  39. some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants

  40. beat him and sent him away empty handed. And he

  41. sent another servant, but they also beat and treated him

  42. shamefully and sent him away empty handed. And he sent

  43. yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out.

  44. Then the owner of the vineyard said, what shall I do?

  45. I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.

  46. But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves,

  47. this is the heir. Let us kill him, so that

  48. the inheritance may be ours. And they threw him out

  49. of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the

  50. vineyard of the or what then will the owner of

  51. the vineyard do to them? He will come and destroy

  52. those tenants and give the vineyard to others. When they

  53. heard this, they said, surely not. But he looked directly

  54. at them and said, what then is this that is written?

  55. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

  56. Falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and

  57. when it falls on anyone, it will crush him. The

  58. scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on

  59. him at that very hour, for they perceived that he

  60. had told this parable against them, But they feared the people.

  61. This is God's word. Let us pray, Lord, we lift

  62. up this time to you. We just asked that the

  63. illumination of the Holy Spirit would be in our hearts,

  64. so that we would see and understand and comprehend your

  65. word for us today. Help us be good stewards of it,

  66. help us apply it, help us understand it, Lord God,

  67. and let it take root in our heart and in

  68. our lives to produce fruit in us. So we just

  69. asked that you would be with us. We render this

  70. time to you to your glory in Jesus name. Everyone

  71. said amen. So we're in kind of a cool section

  72. of scripture of this gospel Specif where just a few

  73. weeks ago we saw Jesus arrive at Jerusalem, shows up

  74. basically a big parade. It's super awesome. Everyone's like really

  75. excited and happy about it, except for Jesus. Jesus is

  76. on a cult crying. He's weeping and wailing over Jerusalem.

  77. He's and we saw that he's weeping and wailing over

  78. the destruction that he knows that is coming upon it,

  79. the judgment that will be upon this people. This is

  80. also the last week of Jesus's life. It's crazy because

  81. it's going to take us seven months to get through it,

  82. but this is seven days worth of stuff that we're

  83. going to be looking out over the next couple of months,

  84. and guess what it's worth. It it's all worth it to

  85. slow down and take that time. Jesus has a lot

  86. of really cool things to say and do. And this

  87. is the last week jesus life before he would go

  88. to the cross to die for our sins and then

  89. be raised on the third day. But from Jesus's arrival

  90. on Sunday to his table flipping in the temple on Monday,

  91. Luke now zooms into a couple of days before the passover,

  92. where Jesus spends his time teaching in the temple. Right,

  93. And honestly, we should have like cut this all out

  94. and carved it and turned it into a mini series

  95. and call it like I don't know, one v one

  96. Jesus or something. I don't know. It would be cool

  97. because it's just it's they go toe to toe. And

  98. as you remember, last week, we looked at Jesus weeping

  99. over Jerusalem, weeping over the rebellion that was to come

  100. upon it, for its wickedness, and his heart break over

  101. the city's rebellion. We looked intently that his weeping wasn't

  102. just because oh, the stones are cool, or man, this

  103. is a cool city, but his heart for the people

  104. and the destruction and judgment that was going to come

  105. upon them. His heart was broken. We saw God's heart

  106. for those we were under judgment. We caught a small

  107. glimpse of that rebellion when we looked at how Jesus

  108. went into the temple and started driving out all the

  109. bad people, started driving out all the people who had

  110. turned this place of worship into a marketplace. And we

  111. noticed how when Jesus did this, there were some people

  112. who weren't so cool about it. There were some people

  113. who were pretty upset that Jesus started doing these things.

  114. And those people where were the religious leaders and prominent

  115. people in Jerusalem. And now we see that they're starting

  116. to seek to destroy Jesus. We saw last week that

  117. they wouldn't do it, though not in broad daylight at least,

  118. because everyone was hanging on Jesus's words. When Jesus spoke,

  119. everyone leaned in, everyone was listening and attentive and going like, oh,

  120. what's he going to say next? What's he going to

  121. teach us next? And they're like, oh, we can't. We

  122. can't touch this guy without starting any kind of issue.

  123. So the next several weeks we're looking at Jesus's teaching

  124. and Luke is going to show us how specifically the

  125. leaders of Israel continue to send people to challenge and

  126. trap Jesus. In his words, what's really cool, though, is

  127. what we're going to see is that the religious leaders

  128. are no match for the Word made flesh. So today

  129. we're kicking off with the leaders of Israel challenging Jesus's authority, which, honestly,

  130. if you're gonna challenge, if that's like, that's a probably

  131. smart thing to start off with, if you're going to

  132. challenge anyone, like, hey, who what gives you the right

  133. to even be opening your mouth in this place. So

  134. we see them challenge Jus's authority and no surprise, Jus's

  135. rebuke and then condemnation of those leaders. Today's message, if

  136. you are taking notes, is titled bad Leadership one oh one.

  137. Today we're going to get a little master class and

  138. everything that is wrong with the leader of Israel and

  139. the consequence of their as we will see, wicked and

  140. rebellion or rebellious leadership. That God had made them stewards,

  141. that they were servants of His who were supposed to

  142. lead Israel, but that they had abandoned their proper station

  143. in pursuit of a right that was not theirs. So

  144. we will see Jesus once again pronounced judgment that is

  145. going to be coming upon them, as well as predict

  146. his death. Again, where I believe this is going to

  147. be helpful for us today because that's important. We could

  148. just see Jesus throw down with some bad leaders, but

  149. we want to know how is this going to affect

  150. us today? And where I believe that's going to help

  151. us as First, the most and most importantly, it's going

  152. to remind us of who is truly in charge. Second,

  153. it's going to show us what bad leaders look like,

  154. not that we don't know what they look like, but

  155. putting some words to what makes than bad leaders, I

  156. think is going to be very helpful for us. And third,

  157. we should heed the warning of what becomes of bad stewards,

  158. as all of us are leaders and stewards of things

  159. in our own life. So you guys ready to jump

  160. in Awesome, We're gonna start in our first section here

  161. we're gonna see something kind of interesting. The interesting situation

  162. where the leaders come and try to get Jesus to

  163. expose his true identity so that they could say he's blaspheming,

  164. but instead he and Jesus ends up making them expose

  165. their true identities, that as wicked and bad leaders. We

  166. see this in verse one and two. One day, as

  167. Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching

  168. the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the

  169. elders came up and said to him, tell us by

  170. what authority you do these things? Or who it is

  171. that gave you this authority. Jesus had been teaching and

  172. rebuking with authority. This is something we've been seeing all

  173. throughout Luke. Everywhere he goes, people are like, man, this

  174. guy talks like he's running at all. So these leaders,

  175. the ones with authority in Israel, come to Jesus wanting

  176. to know what gives him the right to do these things.

  177. They're saying, who put you in charge? And it actually

  178. kind of reminded me of like a little sibling when

  179. they're kind of like, you're not the boss of me,

  180. saying that to the older sibling. But maybe they don't

  181. realize that the parents left like twenty minutes ago and

  182. put the oldest sibling in charge. They don't know what's

  183. up yet, so they're trying to challenge Jesus and trap him.

  184. They want to know who gave Jesus this authority. They

  185. want Jesus to say God did, so that they could

  186. turn around and be like, no, we didn't, and then

  187. execute him or do something right like they wanted to

  188. just get Jesus in trouble. But here we see one

  189. of the first big mistakes that these leaders had. They

  190. had forgotten who is in charge, and here it almost

  191. seems like they don't recognize the one who is really

  192. in charge when he did show up. Although we're going

  193. to unpack the idea more when we get to Jesus

  194. as parable. But interestingly enough, as we've also found in Luke,

  195. when Jesus answers a question, sometimes it doesn't necessarily feel

  196. as straightforward as we think, like Jesus could just say

  197. I have the authority it's me. Jesus doesn't do that.

  198. He decided to answer their question with a question. You

  199. might go, well, why did he do that? And as

  200. I was reading in the commentaries, they're actually saying that

  201. that was one of the Rabbidic like the leaders in

  202. the synagogues, that was one of the ways that they

  203. would have dialogue and discussion with one another. It's like

  204. you'd ask a question, you'd ask kind of another question

  205. about their question. It's interesting, but we now see Jesus

  206. with or we look at that. We see this in

  207. verses three and four. Jesus answered them, I also will

  208. ask you a question. Now tell me was the baptism

  209. of on from heaven or from man? Now this is

  210. what's crazy. Jesus's masterful expertise. He turns this question back

  211. on them, And just for some context, Jesus, much like

  212. John the Baptist, wasn't a high ranking member of society

  213. in the community in the temple. They didn't necessarily have

  214. anything that was like, oh, he's the son of the

  215. high priest, like there wasn't anything like that that kind

  216. of just gave him this authority within their community. He

  217. wasn't born and raised into a situation where he would

  218. have been recognized as having been an authority in their community.

  219. He came from a family Jesus did, where his supposed

  220. father Joseph was just a carpenter. Saw earlier in Luke

  221. that that was one of the kind of indict it's

  222. against Jesus who was preaching in his hometown. They're like,

  223. isn't this Joseph's son? Like who does this guy think

  224. he is? And this is the carpenter. But now Jesus,

  225. much like John the Baptist, appears and starts preaching to

  226. the nation of Israel, speaking with authority and power like

  227. a prophet of the Old Testament. Do you remember John

  228. was the forerunner of Jesus, the one sent ahead of

  229. Jesus to prepare the way for Jesus's arrival to Israel.

  230. And now these leaders want to know by what authority

  231. Jesus is doing what he is doing, and Jesus asks them, well,

  232. where do you think John's baptism came from? What he's

  233. getting at is like, where do you think John got

  234. that authority to do that? It's amazing because now they're

  235. stuck because Jesus exposes two big problems with these leaders,

  236. both their hypocrisy and their fear of man, that is

  237. how they look in the eyes of others. We see

  238. this verses five through eight, and they discussed it with

  239. one another, saying, if we say from heaven, he will say,

  240. why did you not believe him? But if we say

  241. from man, all the people will stone us to death,

  242. for they are convinced that John was a prophet. So

  243. they answered that they did not know where it came from.

  244. And Jesus said to them, neither will I tell you

  245. by what authority I do these things. The options were slim.

  246. Either Jesus could call them out or they could be

  247. stoned to death, and they chose neither neither. They don't

  248. want Jesus calling him out. They can't bear that, and

  249. they also don't want to be stoned to death. So

  250. Jesus has got them with this question. It's beautiful. If

  251. they answered that John was gone or from God, Jesus

  252. would want to know why they didn't believe him, And

  253. that's such a reasonable question. You see clearly what they

  254. really did think, though, because they say that the crowds

  255. were convinced that John was a prophet, so they don't

  256. want to give They have an answer, but they don't

  257. want to give it. They don't want to be forthcoming

  258. about their answer. Either way, they're exposed, so they plead ignorance.

  259. They don't want Jesus to confront them. They don't want

  260. the crowds to confront them. They had an answer, but

  261. in fear of the hypocrisy being exposed, and their fear

  262. of what the crowds would think. They simply said, I

  263. don't know, we don't know, so Jesus answers, then neither

  264. will I tell you both have an answer. But these

  265. religious leaders are now exposed that they aren't acting in

  266. good faith. They're not trying to have a real conversation here.

  267. The leaders of Israel, though they were wrong, won't even

  268. speak up to try and lead and share what they

  269. believe to be the truth. They're a man fearing hypocrites now,

  270. for as much hate as we want to give them,

  271. I believe that unfortunately many of us fall into the

  272. same category. We call ourselves Christians, and yet we might

  273. keep silent about it because we don't want people to

  274. point out how we don't actually live like it. It's

  275. our hypocrisy. And I think one of the deepest daggers

  276. to the death or the chest of a Christian should

  277. be when someone is surprised that you're a Christian and

  278. not like, oh you're a Christian, Like oh you're a Christian.

  279. That should cut us that shit hurt. It's one thing

  280. if someone's like, praise God, because I need someone to

  281. tell me about Jesus. That's what we want. We do

  282. not want someone to go like and they let you

  283. walk into church, they let you come and be a part.

  284. We call ourselves Christians, and yet we're afraid to speak

  285. the truth because of what the crowds might do to us.

  286. There's both sides playing there for us. Now. Of course,

  287. these religious leaders didn't know the truth. They were wrong,

  288. but they thought was wrong. Though they did think it

  289. was the truth, but it was of their own invention.

  290. They were blind, they were wicked. But how much worse

  291. for any Christian or Christian leader who does know the

  292. truth but doesn't speak out because of their fear of

  293. being shown to be a hypocrite or their fear that

  294. other of what others will do to them. We actually

  295. have the truth, we have the way to life. We

  296. know Jesus, we have the gospel. We have the gospel

  297. that's the power to save. But some of our lives

  298. are lived, so it's connected from our beliefs that we're like,

  299. I can't say nothing. We're paralyzed because we don't actually

  300. live out what we believe. That hurts. Sometimes we're like, oh, man,

  301. I don't know what to say, don't know what to say,

  302. But also we're afraid of what people might actually say. Well,

  303. didn't I see you? Well don't you? Aren't you the

  304. one who This isn't just about sharing the gospel. This

  305. can be about doing the right thing when you don't

  306. want to. Maybe it's how we lead our families. People

  307. are watching, people see that. Maybe there's some serious changes

  308. that we need to make in our life because we

  309. are living a double life. Maybe you're afraid of what

  310. your family will say because of what you give first

  311. priority in your life, which should be Jesus, just in

  312. case we don't know what that is. So these bad

  313. leaders did have an answer, but they were so hypocritical

  314. that they had to remain quiet. These bad leaders did

  315. have an answer, but they were too afraid of what

  316. others would do if they did share it. I think

  317. it goes without saying, let's not be like those leaders,

  318. especially being that we do know and have the truth

  319. and are called to proclaim it. We need to get

  320. rid of those roadblocks in our life. Now. I wasn't

  321. originally going to say this, but I noticed that as

  322. I was going through this section, I did want to

  323. make a quick mention of it because I think we

  324. see Jesus also using good discernment here in this situation,

  325. that is to not cast pearls before swine, that he's

  326. being asked a question in bad faith. He's being asked,

  327. he's being lulled, he's being pulled into, abated, into an argument.

  328. I had to find the word. It was there a baited.

  329. He was trying to be brought in to this argument

  330. in this fight. Jesus uses good discernment to go, I'm

  331. not going if we're not going to continue this conversation

  332. in good faith, if it's not going to be a

  333. two way street, we're not having any more of this conversation. Now.

  334. I think we can also learn from that too, to

  335. have good discernment, that there's some situations where we might

  336. need to do that and go like I hear the

  337. questions you're asking me, I don't and find a very loving,

  338. graceful way of saying, I don't think this conversation should

  339. go forth right now. Now. I think you should heavily,

  340. heavily depend on the Holy Spirit to know which is which.

  341. You don't get to just be like, I don't look

  342. this conversation. I'm getting pinned down, Like so this is

  343. the bad conversation. I'm out like, you can't do that,

  344. you should not do that. It's also okay to genuinely

  345. say I don't know. But here we see Jesus in

  346. a situation where they know the answer. He knows the answer,

  347. but no one, no one wants to play, so Jesus

  348. he gives them that answer. But then also in an

  349. interesting way, Jesus does give them an answer, and it's

  350. it's very interesting. He's like, I won't give you an answer,

  351. and then he turns around and gives a parable that

  352. practically gives an answer. It's just different from exactly how

  353. they were asking it. See this verses nine through twelve.

  354. And he began to tell the people this parable. A

  355. man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants,

  356. and went into another country for a long while. When

  357. the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants

  358. so that they would give him some of the fruit

  359. of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent

  360. him away empty handed. And he sent another servant, but

  361. they also beat him and treated him shamefully and sent

  362. him away empty handed. And he sent yet a third,

  363. this one they wounded and cast out Jesus has just

  364. set the stage and told everyone around him the history

  365. of Israel through this parable. This was a very condensed

  366. version of the history of Israel, but to kind of

  367. help us understanding a little bit better of what he's

  368. talking about, especially having trouble tracking what he's talking about.

  369. The owner is God, the vineyard is Israel. The tenants

  370. who were running it are the leaders of Israel. But

  371. we see in this parable that something went horribly horribly wrong.

  372. God starts sending messengers to the vineyard to collect fruit,

  373. but the tenants continue to reject and abuse and send

  374. away empty handed. The servants send from the Master, and

  375. those servants that were being sent would have been the prophets,

  376. the ones who throughout Israel's history continued to come to

  377. Israel and say, this is what the Lord requires, that

  378. you're going astray, or this is what he wants you

  379. to be doing. And time over and over again, you see,

  380. specifically the leaders of Israel reject, kill, abuse, persecute all

  381. of those prophets. This is something we looked at many

  382. months ago when Jesus said to those around him and

  383. Luke thirteen thirty four specifically about Jerus where he's at

  384. oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and

  385. stones those who are sent to it. Imagine that as

  386. like a slogan when you were driving into the city.

  387. Can you imagine that, sorry, that's popped in my head?

  388. How often would I have gathered your children together as

  389. a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you

  390. were not willing. We saw in Luke eleven he calls

  391. out the history and condemnation coming upon this generation, which

  392. you should take that phrase put in your back pocket

  393. for a couple of weeks from now. The condemnation coming

  394. upon this generation for what they have and continue to

  395. do to the prophets. We saw this Luke forty seven.

  396. Woe to you, for you build the tombs of the

  397. prophets whom your father's killed. So you were witnesses and

  398. consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them,

  399. and you build their tombs. Therefore, also the wid God said,

  400. I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom

  401. they will kill and persecute, so that the blood of

  402. all the prophets shed from the foundation of the world

  403. may be charged against this generation. From the blood of

  404. Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perish between the

  405. altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you it will

  406. be required of this generation. This pairs very nicely with

  407. Jesus being a prophet coming to Jerusalem predicting his own

  408. death as the ultimate prophet who will end up being killed.

  409. And actually in that verse that chapter eleven, I believe

  410. right before that, he's like, I need to go to

  411. Jerusalem because I'm like, no prophet can die outside of Jerusalem.

  412. Like literally, he's on his way there for that purpose.

  413. And Jesus's parable is exposing the history of how Israel

  414. has treated the prophets of God. Hence also the condemnation

  415. and judgment that Jesus would be weeping over for the city,

  416. because he's already said prior that it's coming upon this generation.

  417. They have refused to give to God what is his.

  418. They have been bad stewards of what God has set

  419. them in charge of. But then we get a shift

  420. in the parable. The only decides instead of sending more messengers,

  421. he's going to send his very own son, because surely

  422. the tenants will respect him. So we see in verse thirteen,

  423. then the owner of the vineyard, said, what shall I do?

  424. I will send my beloved son, whom they will respect.

  425. But then we see the wickedness of these tenants, these

  426. leaders of Israel on full display, it says. But the tenants,

  427. or when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves,

  428. this is the heir. Let us kill him so that

  429. the inheritance may be ours. And they threw him out

  430. the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner

  431. of the vineyard do to them? He will come and

  432. destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others. When

  433. they heard this, they said, surely not. The servants think

  434. that if they kill the heir, the inheritance is theirs.

  435. They've been given authority in stewardship over the vineyard, over Israel,

  436. but they had forgotten their place. They tried to grab

  437. all the authority for themselves, even to the point of

  438. killing the one true authority son. But Jesus shows them

  439. that they are sadly mistaken. The result will not be

  440. an inheritance, but it will be total destruction. That's what

  441. they're getting for themselves. They've forgotten the privilege it is

  442. to be the steward of the one true owner, and

  443. tried to prop themselves up as the true owner, thinking

  444. that they'd get it all for themselves. But instead of

  445. gaining more, Jesus says, they will lose everything. They are

  446. going to be destroyed and it's going to be given

  447. to others. But the leaders, when they hear these words

  448. of Jesus say that they are saying that the tenets

  449. will be destroyed, it will be given to others. They

  450. object and say, surely not. That is what they had

  451. will be taken from them and given to others. They

  452. start freaking out, and Jesus affirms the truth with scripture.

  453. The words here are crazy. I feel like if I

  454. was watching a movie, the thing would zoom like pan

  455. over and zoom in really intently, because it says in

  456. verse seventeen. But he looked directly at them and said,

  457. what then is this that is written? The stone that

  458. the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. Everyone who falls

  459. on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when

  460. it falls on anyone, it will crush him. Jesus is

  461. the precious stone that Israel was going to reject, but

  462. instead of them being successful, Jesus was going to become

  463. the corner stone they rejected. Him like he was just

  464. another stone, just another person, but yet he was to

  465. be the most consequential stone or person. Jesus is the

  466. stone that the leaders stumble over, and Jesus was thinking

  467. about it. You can technically say that Jesus had the

  468. leader's tripping. Jesus is the one that some stumble over

  469. to their own destruction, and some he falls upon to

  470. their own destruction. There will be judgment for those who

  471. reject Christ, either for those who intentionally stumble because of

  472. their rejection or because of those who are just going

  473. about their way, and then Christ will fall on them

  474. suddenly in judgment. Now, the leaders were no well, they

  475. sometimes seemed like dummies, but they weren't dummies in this situation.

  476. They knew exactly what Jesus was saying and try and

  477. getting at in this text here, and we see in

  478. verse nineteen and I need the band to come up

  479. please verse nineteen. The scribes and the chief priests sought

  480. to lay hands on him that very hour, for they

  481. perceived that he had told this parable against them. But

  482. once again they feared the people. So they are very

  483. aware that Jesus has called judgment down upon them for

  484. their rebellious and wicked leadership. But it was also because

  485. of their bad leadership that kept them from doing anything.

  486. That moment kind of worked in both ways. It's kind

  487. of interesting because they feared the people, so today we

  488. get this very interesting picture of so many of the

  489. things that made them bad leaders. That is, they were hypocrites.

  490. They were not God fearing, but man fearing. They were

  491. selfish and wicked, and this was shown by Jesus's parable

  492. showing that they were rejecting the true authority. They had

  493. rejected the true authority and they tried to have it

  494. all for themselves. They forgot were even worse. Blatantly rejected

  495. God as the true authority. So when Jesus shows up,

  496. they don't even recognize the true authority when it's staring

  497. them right in the face. Instead of submitting to the

  498. true authority, they find themselves fighting against it. And honestly,

  499. this is a story that is all too familiar. This

  500. is a story since the very beginning. Adam and Eve

  501. were placed in a garden. They were told to keep

  502. it and work it, but instead they rebelled against God

  503. and wanted to be their own authority. They rejected God,

  504. they were unfaithful over what He had given them, and

  505. the result was judgment. All throughout the Bible we see

  506. the story of faithless stewards of what God has put

  507. them over and the judgment that will come upon them.

  508. So why would that be any different for us when

  509. we reject or forget who the true authority is in

  510. our lives, when we forget who and what we were

  511. made for, that instead of living for Him, we live

  512. for ourselves. We want the glory and authority for our

  513. own lives. We can be just as wicked as these

  514. leaders are, and we all lead in different areas of

  515. our life, whether it be the example that we just set,

  516. from the entirety of the lives that we have. It

  517. could be our families as husbands, wives, children, as bosses, coworkers, friends, neighbors.

  518. And I say this because we're called to be a

  519. light on a hill. But we can't do that if

  520. we don't learn to be faithful leaders over what the

  521. Lord has given us to steward, whether that be a

  522. large portion or a small portion. As we already spoke

  523. about our hypocrisy, our fear of man instead of fear

  524. of God gets in the way of leading others. How

  525. we are supposed to. And I believe that all of

  526. this is rooted in forgetting who the true authority is.

  527. As soon as we forget who's really in charge. As

  528. soon as we forget who it all really is, our

  529. lives become disjointed to who is really in charge of

  530. your life? And I think, honestly, a more important question

  531. is does that show A lot of us would say, yeah, yeah, totally.

  532. I'm a tenant of the vineyard. I'm under him. But

  533. do I live like it when he calls on me,

  534. when he sends servants to collect the fruit in my life,

  535. when he calls out fruit that should be being born

  536. in my life? Do I send him away empty handed?

  537. Does it show? Because it needs to be made clear

  538. that this text, all of Scripture, are very clear that

  539. there will be judgment for those who reject the true authority.

  540. And actually, in two Peter, chapter two, we get this.

  541. We're gonna we're gonna read all of it, but we're

  542. going to see here leaders. He calls them false teachers,

  543. and they are but people who are other people are

  544. looking up to to be leaders. And he says, this

  545. is what they're marked by, and this is what will

  546. become of them. Starting in verse one, it says also,

  547. but false teachers or false prophets also arose among the people,

  548. just as there will be false teachers among you, who

  549. will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the master

  550. who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many

  551. will follow their sensuality, and because of the way of

  552. Because of them, the way of truth will be blasphemed,

  553. and in their greed they will exploit you with false words.

  554. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their

  555. destruction is not asleep. For if God God did not

  556. spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell

  557. and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be

  558. kept until the judgment. If he did not spare the

  559. ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with

  560. seven others when he brought a flood upon the world

  561. of the ungodly, If by turning the cities of Sodom

  562. and Gomora to ashes, he condemned them to extinction, making

  563. them an example of what is going to happen to

  564. the ungodly, And if he rescued righteous lot greatly distressed

  565. by the sensual conduct of the wicked for us, that

  566. righteous man lived among them day after day he was

  567. tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he

  568. saw and heard. Then the Lord knows how to rescue

  569. the godly from trials and to keep the unrighteous under

  570. punishment until the day of judgment. And especially those who

  571. indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.

  572. Bold and wilful, they do not tremble as they blasphem

  573. the glorious ones. It's being said here is that there

  574. will be punishment for those who reject and continue to

  575. reject the true authority. Here he says, there's false teachers

  576. and false prophets that have come before who have destruction

  577. that is coming for them. And then he just gave

  578. some pretty big examples from the Old Testament about wickedness

  579. who had judgment that came upon it. I put in

  580. my notes a way of kind of summarizing some of

  581. these things is that I was thinking about it, and

  582. I was thinking that as a bad leader, are those

  583. who forget that they are but servants of the true leader,

  584. that is Christ. But for everyone who's put their faith

  585. in Jesus, we need to be reminded of who we

  586. are and who we are called to be. Coincidentally, we're

  587. also going to be in Peter verse Peter too. So,

  588. so put away all malice and all deceit, and hypocrisy,

  589. and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for

  590. the pure spiritual milk, that it may grow, or that

  591. you may grow up into salvation. If indeed you have

  592. tasted that the Lord is good, as you come to

  593. him a living stone, rejected by men, but in the

  594. sight of God, chosen and precious, you, yourselves, like living stones,

  595. are being built up as a spiritual house, to be

  596. a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God

  597. through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture. Behold, I'm

  598. lying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone, chosen and precious,

  599. and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.

  600. So the honor is for you who believe. But for

  601. those who do not believe, the stone that the builders

  602. reject has become the cornerstone and a stone of stumbling

  603. in a rock of offense. They stumble because they disobey

  604. the word as they were destined to do. But you

  605. are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,

  606. a people for his own possession. That you may proclaim

  607. the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness

  608. into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people,

  609. but now you were God's people. Once you had not

  610. received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I

  611. urge you, as sojourners in exiles, to abstain from the

  612. passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.

  613. Keep your conduct among the gentiles honorable, so that when

  614. they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your

  615. good deeds and glorify God. On the day of Visitation,

  616. we needed some news. We needed also that reminder of

  617. who we are in Christ. We need to be reminded

  618. that even in the areas where we've been failing to lead,

  619. there is forgiveness when we have tried to take control

  620. of our life as if we are in charge, that

  621. we can repent and turn to the one who is

  622. truly in control. We can do all of this because

  623. of what Jesus did for us. That Jesus, yes he

  624. was rejected, Yes he was killed even though he didn't

  625. deserve it. But the good news is that that was

  626. no accident. Jesus himself, being perfect and without sin, laid

  627. down his own life. Jesus himself submitted himself to the

  628. authority of God the Father, and took upon himself the wrath.

  629. Not do his sin, but our sin. He took the

  630. punishment for every rebellious, wicked servant that would put their

  631. faith in him. And whether you believe it or not,

  632. you are gods. You bear his image. You were made

  633. to worship, to glorify, to serve and enjoy him forever.

  634. You were made to be a servant of the Lord.

  635. But you have to ask yourself right now, are you

  636. living as a servant who is in rebellion, who is wicked,

  637. or a servant who has been redeemed by the work

  638. of Christ. We were made to live for him, glorify him,

  639. worship him. We were made in his image to be stewards.

  640. Some of us are in our rebellion and continue in

  641. our rebellion, but he offers us forgiveness, to turn to him,

  642. to look to him find forgiveness. Those leaders rebelled against

  643. God and crucified the Lord. Jesus which is incredible because

  644. the ultimate authority even use that wicked act of theirs

  645. for his glorious purposes. The Lord will bring judgment for

  646. the sin and rebellion of those who have rejected him.

  647. But the good news is that you can turn to

  648. Christ and have your punishment taken by him instead. The

  649. very same death that was brought about by wicked hands

  650. was the same means that God used to save and

  651. redeem the wicked. Our God is so good, so I

  652. plead with you to stop living rebellion towards your maker

  653. and turn to him before it's too late. Before because

  654. for those who reject Him and die in their sin,

  655. there will be eternal punishment because we all deserve it. It's

  656. all do our sin. We have wrath stored up for

  657. each and every one of us. The question is is

  658. it going to be on your head? Or is it

  659. going to be on Christ's? You put your faith in him,

  660. He's taken that punishment for you. Everyone who repents to

  661. their sin and believes in Jesus will be saved. Scripture

  662. is so clear. Everyone who believes in his heart and

  663. confesses with their mouth that Jesus is Lord will be saved.

  664. That is to say, everyone who lays down their pride

  665. and believes and submits themselves to the true authority of

  666. the universe will be saved from the wrath do their sin,

  667. and I hope and I pray that you do so.

  668. And I hope that for everyone who has put their

  669. faith in Jesus that this is a sobering reminder. We

  670. need these when it's stuff that we already know. We

  671. need the reminders. We need the reminder of the seriousness

  672. that God has with those that he sets up as stewards.

  673. He has called us to steward our families, our church,

  674. our wives, our jobs, our lives. So we need to ask,

  675. are we leading in a hypocritical self seeking way? Are

  676. we living in fear of man instead of fear of God,

  677. the true authority? Are we giving two weight to things

  678. that don't matter. We need to repent and turn to

  679. Him and seek guidance on how to lead and how

  680. to steward the things better in our lives that He

  681. has given us, because one day, every single one of

  682. us will be called to give an account. And I

  683. don't want to be found an unfaithful or rebellious steward

  684. of what was truly his. We need to remember that

  685. everything we have is his. He has given it to

  686. us as stewards, so let's be faithful with it. Maybe

  687. that's going to mean some making, some changes to your schedules,

  688. some changes to your finances, some changes to your time,

  689. your focus, your goals. Ultimately, all with this question in mind,

  690. are those things submitted to what the true owner of

  691. those things wants you to do with them? Everything you

  692. have is God's? Are you using it for him? Are

  693. you using it for his purpose? Have you submitted it

  694. to him? Say I was thinking about doing it this

  695. with it? Are they submitted to him for his purposes?

  696. Is it what he wants you to do with them?

  697. And I pray that you consider these things and that

  698. we as a church would only shine brighter to those

  699. around us because of it. We would live as faithful

  700. stewards carrying out His mission. And I pray that as

  701. we become more faithful in the little that the Lord

  702. has given us, that we will lead our families, our churches,

  703. our communities even better and all to the glory of

  704. the one it all truly belongs to. Amen, All right,

  705. would you please stand
