  1. Grab your bibles. We're going to be in Luke chapter

  2. twenty today. So if you need a Bible, we have

  3. some at the resource desk and the lobby. Please go

  4. grab one and keep it. We want you to have

  5. that bible. We're going to be in chapter twenty Versus

  6. forty one through forty seven. And while you're turning there,

  7. we've been in a series called Luke The Orderly Account

  8. of Truth. Luke the Orderly Account of Truth, and we've

  9. been learning all about Jesus' life and ministry while he

  10. walked the earth. Luke did a careful investigation of all

  11. of it. And because of his good, strong, and difficult

  12. work that he did, we can know the truth about

  13. who Jesus is. That was his whole goal in writing

  14. the gospel thatf Theophilis and subsequently us. It's not just

  15. for Theophilis, but we also get a benefit from this.

  16. We can know with certainty the truth about the things

  17. that we've been taught about Jesus because he went and

  18. did the hard work. And at this point in the

  19. Gospel of Luke, as we've been going through it, there's

  20. been a major shift in Gesa this ministry. We've noticed that,

  21. haven't we He's no longer on his way to Jerusalem,

  22. which he said is where he's going to die. He's

  23. no longer on his way to Jerusalem. He's actually arrived there.

  24. He came to the city riding on a colt or

  25. a donkey. And as the crowds are cheering around him

  26. as he enters the city, they're cheering and praising Jesus.

  27. Isn't cheering and praising is he? No, he was weeping.

  28. He's weeping over the city. He was weeping over the

  29. wickedness that he saw in the city and the judgment

  30. that was coming on the city. But now as Jesus

  31. in the city, he spends all week going to the

  32. temple to preach and teach. I like what Pastor Duncan said,

  33. he's like throwing down with religious leaders. They got this

  34. like bout going on. But he's going back and forth

  35. with all the different religious leaders. The chief priests, the scribes,

  36. the elders, the Pharisees, and the Sadducees all challenge his authority,

  37. and they're trying to trap him. They're trying to catch

  38. him with They're asking specific questions and trying to trap

  39. him or catch him in his answers. They wanted to

  40. roy Jesus, they wanted him to be gone. But because

  41. of the crowds were gathered around and they're all hanging

  42. on every word that Jesus said, they couldn't get close

  43. to him. They couldn't execute their plan. They can't do it.

  44. So what they decide is in front of all the people,

  45. what we'll do is we're going to try everything we

  46. can to discredit Jesus. We're going to ask these hard

  47. hitting questions that challenges authority, challenges knowledge, or try to

  48. make them out to be a liar to get him

  49. to say something incriminating. At that point, the Jews they

  50. can't execute. They can't do executions. They can't kill anybody.

  51. The Roman government has to do that. So the only

  52. way they can get someone to be killed is to

  53. catch them saying something incriminating, like don't give to Caesar. Right,

  54. So you saw that thing where Jesus was asked the

  55. question who should we pay our taxes? If you missed

  56. any of that, go back and listen to what Pastor

  57. Duncan preaches. Great, they're trying to catch them saying in

  58. something incriminating to hand him over to the Romans so

  59. they can kill. But Jesus ain't no punk. He won't

  60. be trapped. Right. He's smarter than I know. Ever said

  61. that about Jesus before, I don't know. He doesn't fall

  62. for the trap though. In fact, every answer that he

  63. gives makes the people more scared to ask him any

  64. other questions. They're like, man, he's literally making us look

  65. like fools, and I don't dare ask another question because

  66. he's going to give an answer I can't answer or

  67. I can't respond to. Right, They're scared to ask him

  68. anything else. Every time they try to trick Jesus, he

  69. ends up showing the crowds that are following a very

  70. very important thing. And he's saying that your leaders don't

  71. know what they're talking about. They don't understand this. That's

  72. what Jesus is uncovering by all these this back and

  73. forth and this questioning, that their leaders don't know what

  74. they're talking about. The people they're following, they might not

  75. be the experts that they claim to be. This past Monday,

  76. I went to the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. Anybody been there?

  77. It's a beautiful place. I was asked by my sister

  78. Mariah and Jake to do their family photos there, take

  79. pictures of them and the kids. I love the Nesqually

  80. Wildlife Refuge. It's beautiful out there. I've gone there for years.

  81. The person who got me into duck hunting, we used

  82. to go every Friday. We go there and look out

  83. at the water and see the different birds that are

  84. out there. But Mariah asked me to come to their

  85. family photos, and so I show up there. It's a

  86. beautiful sunny day on Monday. I don't remember Monday. It

  87. was very sunny like it is now, a slight breeze. Awesome.

  88. I go scouting out the different locations and you know,

  89. setting like settings on my camera. I walk up to

  90. a fence and like literally on the other side of

  91. the fence of rabbit's just chilling there. And I was like,

  92. oh cool, I'm gonna take pictures this rabbit. It's great, right,

  93. rabbit just posing for me. I go out on the

  94. backside of where the visitors center is. You can look

  95. out over the water and there's two wood duck drakes. Now,

  96. if you've never seen a wood duck drake before, I

  97. think it's the most beautiful bird on the planet. You

  98. should at some point google one. It's a wood duck

  99. and there's two of them out there. I was like,

  100. this is this day's majestic. This day could not go

  101. any better. They weren't close enough to take pictures, but

  102. this is like an amazing day. So the so the

  103. family shows up and we're like, all right, let's let's

  104. get some some family photos. We start walking down those

  105. For those who've been there, the long gravel path, we're

  106. walking all the way down. At the end of its

  107. two really big barns. Beautiful place to take pictures. So

  108. we're taking pictures all the way down there. But it's

  109. a long walk and they got small kids, right, And

  110. so when we get to the barn, we're finally there,

  111. we're taking pictures. The kids start doing what kids do

  112. when they're done with pictures. Right, Elsie will not sit still.

  113. She's getting up, she's running around. She can't she can't

  114. sit still anymore. Daniel's got a full diaper and it's

  115. starting to leak through his pants. That's great, right, So

  116. we say we decide like, okay, we are the clock

  117. has started until World War three is gonna ensue, so

  118. let's get some quick pictures and then we'll hurry back.

  119. So you take a few more pictures, and then we're like, well,

  120. let's go back the way of this wooden there's a

  121. wooden walkway that kind of goes over the water and

  122. it's pretty, and I was like, sweet, that's a great idea,

  123. and then we'll take some pictures on the way there.

  124. So we get on this wooden path, we're walking down

  125. and we get to there's a fork. You can go right,

  126. you can go left on this wooden walkway. Both say

  127. to the parking lot. I've been going here for years.

  128. So I'm like, sweet, let's go to the left. Take

  129. the left path. This is the fast path. This is

  130. the quick way back to the parking lot. So we

  131. all start walking down and they're all following me. The

  132. left path is not, in fact the short path. It

  133. is the much much longer path, like almost double Jake,

  134. I don't know it was. It was a lot longer.

  135. So I felt terrible. I have led them down, let

  136. them all astray down the wrong path on this walking path.

  137. What's my point in all of this? My point is

  138. what I call today's message, and I called it, choose

  139. your leaders wisely, choose your leaders. Wisely, we need to

  140. be careful with who we are allowed to lead us, right,

  141. Can I get an amen on that anyone been led astray? Yes?

  142. Well I know at least I let my own family

  143. astray walking in the wrong path. We need to be

  144. careful who we follow, because not everyone who claims to

  145. be an expert actually is an expert. Not everyone who's

  146. gone to the wildlife refuge a lot is an expert

  147. in the walking paths. We're just not. But what Jesus

  148. has been alluding to in our text here, what he's

  149. been alluding to, and through all these back and forth

  150. conversations with these different people, he's finally going to outright say.

  151. I don't know if you've noticed. Over the last few weeks,

  152. it's been like, Okay, something happened, and we're learning a

  153. ton in there. But Jesus has an outright said what

  154. he's kind of getting at. And today he's going to

  155. outright say it. He's going to warn the people about

  156. their leaders, and he's going to tell them to beware,

  157. to beware of their leaders. So I want to read

  158. our text and then we'll pray. But I want to

  159. start in our text in verse thirty nine. So let's

  160. look at Luke twenty verse thirty nine. Then some of

  161. the scribes answered, teacher, you have spoken well, for they

  162. no longer dared to ask him any question. But he

  163. said to them, how can they say that the Christ

  164. is David's son? For David himself says in the Book

  165. of Psalms, the Lord said to my Lord, sit at

  166. my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.

  167. David thus calls him Lord, So how is he his son?

  168. And in the hearing of all the people, he said

  169. to his disciples, beware of the scribes who like to

  170. walk around around in long robes and love greetings in

  171. the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and

  172. the places of honor at feasts, who devour widow's houses

  173. and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive

  174. the greater condemnation. Let's pray we thank you for your word.

  175. We thank you that we get the opportunity to open

  176. it and learn from it. God, I pray that we

  177. hear clearly the message you have for us today, and

  178. anything that would cause us to shrink back or disagree

  179. with it. God, let us put to death, those pieces

  180. of flesh in us and submit them to you God,

  181. to let your word be the authority in our life

  182. for how we think, how we act, the things that

  183. we do. God, let it be the authority. We're submitted

  184. to you and so grateful for your word today and

  185. that we get to go through it together. And Jeous name,

  186. everybody said, Amen, say choose your leaders wisely chose leaders. Amen,

  187. that's it. We can go home. Just kidding. After Jesus

  188. corrects the Sadducees in front of everybody, the scribes pipe

  189. up and I picture, like, get him, you get him, Jesus.

  190. That's kind of what they're saying, because they're at odds

  191. with each other. But who are these scribes. We got

  192. a chance to learn about the Sadducees last week, but

  193. who are the scribes. The Sadducees and the priests we

  194. know are the people who controlled everything in the temple,

  195. so they kind of ran the temple. But the Pharisees

  196. and the scribes they taught in the synagogues, which is

  197. different than the temple. It's only one temple. There are

  198. synagogues all over the place. But these two different groups

  199. were at odds with each other because they didn't believe

  200. the same things. And we learned a little bit about

  201. that last week, so definitely go check that out. But

  202. after the scribes respond to what Jesus said, Jesus turns

  203. them and addresses them directly. And these scribes, they're the lawyers,

  204. the attorneys, they're the experts in the Mosaic law. So

  205. you understand, like a lawyer in our sense. The reason

  206. it's easy to understand to call them a lawyer now

  207. is because the lawyers understand the law and interpret it

  208. in court. Right. So that's what these scribes would do,

  209. is they would interpret the Mosaic law and teach it

  210. and help people use it in this not to get

  211. too nerdy the sand Hadrian where there is court within

  212. the Jews, right, put that in your back pocket and

  213. study it later. I know time for that today. But

  214. after these these pharisee or excuse me, these scribes respond

  215. to what Jesus says. These lawyers are responding to what

  216. Jesus says. This is remember this Mosaic law, this is

  217. the same law that the people of God have been

  218. I put following in quotes because they're trying to follow

  219. it well. But this is the same law that they

  220. received almost fifteen hundred years ago, so they've had it

  221. for a long time. They've been studying it for a

  222. long time. And what they would do is, as lawyers

  223. and experts in this mosaic law, they would teach the

  224. people in the synagogue what God's law said and then

  225. what it meant. So the people looked at these scribes

  226. and held them in very high esteem. These are people

  227. that they would try to be like that they would

  228. strive after the scribes and the Pharisees. But Jesus asked

  229. them a question here that we just read in our text.

  230. He asked them a question to show everyone that they're

  231. not the experts that they claim to be. They don't

  232. fully understand. So before Jesus makes his bigger point that

  233. he's trying to make about telling to beware, like we

  234. just read in the text, that's the bigger point Jesus

  235. is getting at. But before he goes into that, he

  236. wants to first show everyone why do I want you

  237. to beware of these people? And that's how this starts.

  238. So if you look at verse forty one, Jesus responds

  239. to the scribes and all the other people are kind

  240. of listening around. But he said to them, how can

  241. they say that the Christ is David's son? How can

  242. they say that? For David himself says in the Book

  243. of Psalms, the Lord said to my Lord, sit at

  244. my right hand until I make your enemies at your footstool.

  245. David thus calls him Lord. So how is he his son?

  246. How can people say that? How can the scribes and

  247. the Pharisees say that the Christ is David's son? And

  248. before we go any further, that might not make any

  249. sense to you sitting here right now, But the people

  250. in the day is crystal clear what was being said.

  251. They understood it perfectly. The Christ, the Messiah, was prophesied

  252. to come through the Davidic line, or through David's line,

  253. and that prophecy is in Isaiah nine six and seven

  254. and Second Samuel seven twelve or sixteen. So this is

  255. a prophecy. They would have grown up with, hearing, learning

  256. and knowing that the one that they would call Lord,

  257. who was supposed to come and deliver God's people and

  258. lead them as their righteous king, the righteous forever king,

  259. was going to be an heir of David. This is

  260. what the Jews knew, and this is what the Jews taught.

  261. And in Mark's gospel account of this same moment, because

  262. the different gospel, different gospels sometimes have the same account.

  263. And in Mark's Gospel and Mark twelve, we see the

  264. scribes are the one that say that the Christ is

  265. David's son. So we know the scribes are saying this.

  266. Jesus asking a question, how can they say? And the

  267. scribes are saying it. If you look at Matthew's account

  268. in Matthew twenty two, Jesus straight up asked the Pharisees,

  269. says whose son the Christ is? He says, who is it?

  270. And they all say the son of David. So we

  271. see the scribes and the Pharisees both are saying that

  272. the Christ is David's son. And this title the son

  273. of David became a title used for the one who

  274. would come and deliver Israel. So when they say who's

  275. the deliver, they say the son of David. But the

  276. people came to an interesting conclusion as they understood this.

  277. They came to the conclusion that some man would come

  278. from David's lineage to lead them, and a lot of

  279. them thought that was in a political or in a

  280. military way, and in their context, it would be to

  281. drive out the Romans, to wipe them out and bring

  282. Israel back to the top. That's what they thought. And Jesus,

  283. what he's doing in this part of our text today

  284. is he's pointing out the error in their understanding. He's

  285. pointing out that they've missed it. Jesus says, how can

  286. the Christ be just a son of David, just some man.

  287. David himself is the one who points out these More

  288. than a man. David calls him lord. And throughout history,

  289. especially in Jewish culture, you would a father would never

  290. call his son lord. A father was always the superior

  291. member in the family, always, and that's not just for

  292. the Jews, that's for lots of history. So what David

  293. is saying here, what David is communicating, is that the

  294. Christ is superior to him because he calls him lord.

  295. He's not just a son in his line. It's not

  296. just someone that's gonna be born from a grand grandson,

  297. a great grandson, a great great grandson, all the way

  298. down the line. It's not just some guy. He's the Lord.

  299. And this is actually a quote from Psalm ten. So

  300. I want to look at that real quick. We have

  301. the one on the screen, right, sweet, yeah, keep your

  302. place in Luke twenty and we can read Psalm one

  303. to ten from the screen. The Lord said to my lord,

  304. sit at my right hand until I make your enemies

  305. your footstool. Sounds familiar, right, We just read that the

  306. Lord sends for or from Zai on your mighty scepter.

  307. Rule in the midst of your enemies. Your people will

  308. offer themselves freely on the day of your power in

  309. holy garments from the womb of the morning. The dew

  310. of your youth will be yours. The Lord has sworn

  311. and will not change his mind. You are a priest

  312. forever after the order of Melkezedek. The Lord is at

  313. your right hand. He will shatter kings on the day

  314. of his wrath. He will execute judgment among the nations,

  315. filling them with corpses. He will shatter chiefs over the

  316. wide earth. He will drink from the brook by the way.

  317. Therefore he will lift up his head. The Lord Yahweh

  318. said to my lord add Anie. These are two different

  319. words used for Lord there, but they are both names

  320. for the Almighty God. A priest forever after the order

  321. of Melkezedek ween't have time to dive into that. But

  322. the point there, the priest forever and he will judge

  323. the nations. This isn't talking about some guy. This is

  324. not just talking about a dude who is born from

  325. the line of David. This is talking about God himself.

  326. That's what this is talking about. And who is God

  327. in the flesh. Who's the eternal priest, Who's the one

  328. who judges all It's Jesus. Jesus is the one who

  329. is all of those things. Jesus is the king who

  330. comes in the line of David. And whether you follow

  331. his adopted lineage through Joseph, which we see in the

  332. Matthew one genealogy, or his half blood lineage through Mary,

  333. which we've already gone through in Luke three, both of

  334. them come from or go through the line of David.

  335. So they're showing you, no matter how you look at it,

  336. Christ came through the line of David. But he isn't

  337. just a man, which is what they thought. He isn't

  338. just the man, He's the god man, Jesus Christ. He

  339. is the Lord. So that means the scribes, the Pharisees,

  340. the Sadducees, the chief priest. None of them got it right,

  341. because what are they trying to do to Jesus, trying

  342. to destroy him. They're trying to kill Jesus. He's messing

  343. with their flow, he's messing with their influence, and they

  344. want Jesus to destroy They want to kill him, the

  345. actual son of David, the actual Messiah, they're actual king.

  346. The Christ was standing right in front of him. They

  347. were all blind, they couldn't see him. And Jesus shows

  348. with a very very simple question that these scribes, the

  349. leaders that all the people have been following, looking up to,

  350. striving to be like, they all missed it. They missed it.

  351. David thus calls him Lord. So how is he his son?

  352. They can't answer Jesus question. They don't know. You experts

  353. in the law, you teachers and leaders of the people,

  354. you have no clue. Everyone say choose your leaders wisely,

  355. because not everyone who claims to be an expert actually

  356. is the second part of our text, Jesus is addressing

  357. the character and the conduct of these scribes, the character

  358. and the conduct of who these scribes actually are. Starting

  359. verse forty five, and in the hearing of all the people.

  360. He said to his disciples, beware of the scribes who

  361. like to walk around in long robes and love greetings

  362. in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues

  363. and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows

  364. houses and for pretense make long prayers. They will receive

  365. the greater condemnation. So Jesus turns to say something to

  366. his disciples. It's like the way our tech started. He

  367. looks at the scribes and starts talking, and then he

  368. turns to his disciples to say something about the scribes.

  369. That's how this is unfolding. Saying something to his disciples,

  370. but everybody can hear what he says, because there's sometimes

  371. that Jesus pulls his disciples aside and tells them something

  372. specific that nobody else gets to hear. He explains his

  373. parables often to his disciples and doesn't explain it to everybody.

  374. But here it's not like it's not one of those times.

  375. Jesus is saying, listen up, disciples, and everyone else can

  376. hear me, and he rebukes the scribes. He's rebuking them,

  377. so that means the disciples could hear the Pharisees could hear,

  378. the Sadducees could hear, and the scribes could all hear this,

  379. and he's rebuking them. And this is the same kind

  380. of rebuke that we often see that Jesus give the Pharisees.

  381. The leaders of the people are they're just corrupt, and

  382. we see this all throughout scripture. The leaders of God's

  383. people have fallen. They are corrupt, and they need a

  384. forever righteous leader. These scribes like to dress up all

  385. fancies so everyone looks at them when they come into town.

  386. They love the greetings they get from the people. They

  387. like being the cool people. When they want the best

  388. seats in the house or at the dinner table during feasts,

  389. they want the seats of honor. They make everything about them.

  390. It's celebrity culture. I mean, we know what this looks

  391. like nowadays, right, everyone's screaming to get a picture with

  392. so and so. That's what these scribes would be like.

  393. They want people to come and chase them down. They

  394. want these places of honor they want. They love their

  395. status that they have among the people. But Jesus goes

  396. even further in verse forty seven to tell them what

  397. else they do they take advantage of the vulnerable and

  398. the needy. Not only that, when they pray, they put

  399. on a show just to make themselves seem pious or holy.

  400. So they pray these long prayers in front of everybody

  401. to make them seem like they're more holy than they are. Yet,

  402. what are they doing behind the scenes? They're devouring widow's homes.

  403. And what conclusion does Jesus come to after stating all

  404. that it's still up there perfect, look at that, that's

  405. last thing on the screen. They will receive the greater condemnation.

  406. That's the conclusion Jesus comes to. They will receive the

  407. greater condemnation. Beware of them, because this is where they're headed.

  408. He's saying, beware, this is where your leaders are going.

  409. And this is the same thing that we're told in

  410. Hebrews thirteen seven. I don't know when the last time

  411. you read Hebrews was. You should read it often. It's great.

  412. Hebrews thirteen seven says, remember your leaders, those who spoke

  413. to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of

  414. their way of life, and imitate their faith. Consider the

  415. outcome of their way of life, and then imitate their faith.

  416. Jesus is telling the disciples here all the disciple just

  417. means someone who's following and learning from Jesus, a learner.

  418. He's telling all the people who are following and learning

  419. from him. Look at your leaders. Consider the outcome of

  420. their way of life. And the outcome of the way

  421. of life for the scribes is the greater condemnation. That

  422. means greater judgment. It means greater sentencing. And this greater

  423. doesn't mean good. Greater means more severe, a more severe

  424. condemnation for these men. And I don't know about if

  425. there's any women's, but I doubt it. As scribes, it's

  426. a more severe condemnation. I had forgotten what Jesus said

  427. in Luke chapter six, and I can't remember where I

  428. got this or don't know the Lord. It was Holy

  429. Spirit popped in my head. That's how I remembered it.

  430. But I had completely forgotten Luke chapter six. I want

  431. to look at verses thirty nine and forty. Jesus says

  432. he also told him a parable. Can a blind man

  433. lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into

  434. a pit. A disciple is not above his teacher, but

  435. everyone when he's fully trained will be like his what

  436. everyone who's fully trained will be like his teacher. Now,

  437. why would Jesus go from talking about blind men falling

  438. into a pit immediately into teachers and disciples? Why would

  439. he make that connection? Choose your leaders wisely? That's why.

  440. That's why he connects these two. You will end up

  441. in the same place as they are. That's what that means.

  442. You're going to end up in the same place as

  443. those you follow. And that's intentionally or unintentionally. I wasn't

  444. intentionally leading Jake and Ryan the kids on the long path.

  445. I just didn't know the short path. Yet we all

  446. ended up on the long path. Does that make sense

  447. you guys following that It doesn't always ill intent. You

  448. could be following someone who has all the greatest and

  449. best intentions and you will still end up in the pit.

  450. You will still end up on the long path. Can

  451. I have the band come up? Please? But back to

  452. these scribes. Not only are they headed for ruin themselves,

  453. but they're also bringing people along with them. They're bringing

  454. people into their own ruin. These leaders are actually living

  455. the sober warning that James gives. He says that not

  456. many and if you should become teachers, my brothers, for

  457. you know that we who teach will be judged with

  458. greater strictness. That's James three to one. They're literally living

  459. and walking in this same sobering warning. These scribes will

  460. be judged with greater strictness because God takes very seriously

  461. the shepherding of his flock. He cares deeply about it.

  462. He holds those who lead his flock more accountable. So

  463. one of the most terrifying things about standing up here,

  464. opening my mouth about what God's word says, because I

  465. will be held accountable if I am wrong and I

  466. lead you astray, the Lord will be severe with my judgment.

  467. That's terrifying. And not to make you feel terrible, but

  468. you do have influence as well. What do you do

  469. with that influence? It makes sense though that God would

  470. feel this way, right, I mean, how do you feel

  471. and someone starts messing with your kids? My watch? You

  472. aren't messing with my boys, not at all. You're not

  473. leading my boys astray. And I want all the dads

  474. in here to look me in the eyes. You need

  475. to protect the leadership of your house. We just went

  476. to this man's conference and learned a few things, which

  477. is pretty cool. But like one of the things is

  478. like a father's influence and voice in his family. Nobody

  479. has as much influence over their family than a father.

  480. So brothers, let's protect that. And if this is how

  481. we feel about our own earthly kids, should imagine how

  482. God feels. We actually don't have to imagine, because he

  483. tells us look at Matthew Chapter eighteen, verses five and six.

  484. Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.

  485. But whoever causes on one of these little ones who

  486. believe in me to sin, it would be better for

  487. him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck

  488. and to be drowned in the depths of a sea

  489. of the sea. Do you know what a millstone is?

  490. Millstone is a giant stone wheel used to crush green. Nope,

  491. I don't care how good a swimmer you are. You

  492. got one of those bad boys around your neck, You're

  493. not swimming to the top home. I'm sorry. This text

  494. right here, this Matthew eighteen text, isn't just talking about

  495. children by age. It's also talking about to those who

  496. are young and impressionable in their faith. If you cause

  497. one of them to sin or other translations say stumble,

  498. tie a millstone around that person's neck, and throw them

  499. in the ocean. God is serious about it. He's serious

  500. about those who lead his children, his sheep. That's why

  501. these scribes are receiving their greater condemnation, because they're leading

  502. people to ruin. It's also why Jesus is warning the people,

  503. even though they will be held accountable, they will. We're

  504. also warned to choose our leaders wisely. Say it, say

  505. choose your leaders wisely. What's the point of the text today?

  506. Take great care when choosing who you entrust the leadership

  507. and direction of your life. A ship goes where the

  508. captain sails it. A ship goes where the captain sails it.

  509. So whose vot are you getting on? It's only one

  510. captain who I trust a complete leadership of my life,

  511. as Jesus. It's only Jesus. And my plea to you

  512. right now is to follow the leadership of Jesus in

  513. all things everything. To fully submit, to fully surrender to

  514. him as lord, as king, as leader, as captain, To

  515. fully submit to him, To follow Jesus over all other voices,

  516. to hear his word and obey all this son of

  517. David talk. He is the son of David. We looked

  518. at the genealogies, right, or we talked about the genealogies.

  519. He is the son of David. But he's the better David.

  520. You think David was an awesome king. You think he

  521. was a great king. I mean, maybe you don't, because

  522. you're not jew who grew up learning the stuff. They

  523. looked at him as the great king. You think he

  524. was awesome. Jesus is the perfect, righteous king who always

  525. rules faithfully. He's the better David. It's like the prophecy says,

  526. he's the king who will deliver his people from their enemy. Well,

  527. what's our greatest enemy? It's our own sin. What is

  528. the enemy that we cannot defeat on our own sin?

  529. We can't do it on our own Jesus is the

  530. propheside king that comes to save us from our greatest enemy.

  531. Our king. Jesus died on the cross to take the

  532. punishment for our sin, so we didn't have to Through

  533. faith in him, he has delivered us from sin and death.

  534. So when I say choose your leaders wisely, there is

  535. no wiser choice than choosing Jesus. There is no wiser choice.

  536. Choose Jesus. His ship is headed to eternal life. Every

  537. other ship is headed to eternal death. His is the

  538. only one that leads to eternal life. So choose Jesus,

  539. and then after that keep choosing wisely. Once you've settled

  540. who the ultimate leader of your life is, continue to

  541. choose wisely for every sub leader under that. Does that

  542. make sense? What voices do you let influence you? There

  543. is no shortage of voices trying to influence you today.

  544. It's like a barrage, a bombardment of different influences. They're

  545. all trying to lead me or fighting and biting for

  546. my attention. They're all trying to influence you. I mean,

  547. look at online. Everyone's called an influencer. It's literally in

  548. the name. They're trying to infl wllumits you in some direction.

  549. These people are claiming to be experts in something, but

  550. not everyone who calls himself an expert is actually an expert.

  551. Not everyone wearing across a necklace is a Christian. Not

  552. everyone receiving an award and saying I want to thank

  553. God actually knows who he is. Who do you look

  554. up to? Who are your heroes? Chris Pratt. He's pretty awesome.

  555. I hope he's a real Christian. He's saying some great stuff.

  556. Sorry if he watches Chris. Not every preacher holding a

  557. Bible speaking the truth. It's a lot of content online.

  558. There's a lot of sermons we can watch, a lot

  559. of places we can go, but not every single one

  560. of them waving a Bible speaking the truth that it says.

  561. Can you spot a false teacher? Do you know God's

  562. word enough to know? Again, unintentional and intentional, you still

  563. end up in the same place. You're gonna end up

  564. where those who are leading you are going. So there

  565. may be something someone who has the greatest of intentions.

  566. But if you don't know what God's word actually says,

  567. they could be lying in your face and you'd have

  568. no clue. They could be leading you into the pit

  569. and you would have no idea. Who are you giving

  570. permission to influence and lead you? What are you feeding

  571. yourself with? Kind of music do you listen to, kind

  572. of movies and shows do you watch? It's all influencing

  573. you and leading you. And I'm not saying it's like

  574. bad to listen to music or wrong to listen to

  575. music that isn't worship music, or to watch movies and

  576. shows that aren't strictly about Jesus. But what's your diet

  577. look like? Like? What are you feeding on the most?

  578. Pastor Jordan and I are like dudes and we meet

  579. all the time and checking on life. And when we

  580. were talking last time there, I had this like thought

  581. that I kept felt like God was pushing on me.

  582. We argue all the time what's right and what's wrong,

  583. and specifically in things like this, well is it right? Well,

  584. it's not wrong. But what's better? What's just better? What's

  585. that wrong for me to listen to whatever music? But

  586. what's better? What's your diet consists of? What are you

  587. feeding on the most? What do you allow? You're literally

  588. giving permission to be led by what you consume and

  589. what you listen to and who influences you. You're giving

  590. them permission because you've given them your attention. Beware of

  591. the scribes. Choose your leaders wisely. Jesus is saying, when

  592. it comes to who you follow, take heed, guard yourself

  593. when it comes to what you let influence you and

  594. lead you. Beware this text is a huge warning. Beware

  595. you will end up in the same place as those

  596. you follow, So consider the outcome of their way of

  597. life and choose your leaders wisely. Him Him, Can you

  598. guys stand your feet please,
