  1. We're going to be in Luke chapter twenty one today,

  2. so you can grab that your bibles open them up

  3. to Luke chapter twenty one. We have a bigger chunk

  4. of texts today. We're going to be going through verses

  5. from five to twenty four.

  6. And as you're.

  7. Turning there, we've been in a series called Luke The

  8. Orderly Account of Truth. We've been going verse by verse

  9. through the Gospel of Luke because Luke did a careful

  10. investigation of Jesus' life and ministry, and he wrote this

  11. specific book or this gospel to a man who lived

  12. at a certain time in history. To believe that the

  13. Gospel of Luke was written in the early sixties AD,

  14. and this is going to be very important as we're

  15. going through our text today to keep that in mind.

  16. Luke wrote his Gospel for Theophilus, and we get the

  17. benefit of learning from it as well. But you wrote

  18. it for Theophilus, and he wanted him to have certainty

  19. about the truth, the truth about what well, the truth

  20. about who Jesus is and what he taught. That was

  21. what his goal was for and the reason it's important

  22. to know who Luke wrote his gospel too, and when

  23. he wrote his gospel. Is because in our text today,

  24. Jesus is going to say some things about the future.

  25. It's going to say some things about the future. But

  26. what some of what Jesus says about the future has

  27. already happened when Theophlis received the Gospel of Luke. Some

  28. of it's already actually happened, but some of it is

  29. still yet to come. So I say Theophilus is living

  30. in the in between times.

  31. He's in and in between time.

  32. He can look back the last thirty years of his

  33. own life and he can point to us certain specific

  34. moments in history and say, Jesus said this was going

  35. to happen, and it happened. He can look back at

  36. his life and see the things that Jesus said was

  37. going to happen and specifically.

  38. When they happened.

  39. And if that's the case, then he can know that

  40. what Jesus said is going to happen after is going

  41. to happen as well. He can have confidence knowing that

  42. the future things that have yet to happen in his

  43. life are still going to happen.

  44. They're on the way.

  45. The events tents that have happened serves as a sign

  46. of what's to come next.

  47. And this week.

  48. In next week's message, it's kind of a two part message,

  49. so Pastor Duncan will take over for next week. We

  50. kind of cut what Jesus is saying in half, and

  51. it would be a lot for us to put it

  52. all into one message, so we decide to put it

  53. into two separate messages. And you're going to see the

  54. true conclusion about of what Jesus is saying in next

  55. week's message. But there is so much that we get

  56. to learn about what Jesus has to say in this

  57. first half. So I'm going to read, then we're going

  58. to pray, So let's do it. Luke Chapter twenty one,

  59. verses five through twenty four. And while some were speaking

  60. of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones

  61. and offerings, he said, as for these things, you see,

  62. the days will come when there will not be left

  63. here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

  64. And they asked him, teacher, when will these things be

  65. and when? And what will be the sign when these

  66. things are about to take place? And he said, see

  67. that you are not led astray, for many will come

  68. in my name, saying I am he And the time

  69. is at hand to not go after them. And when

  70. you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified,

  71. for these things must first take place.

  72. But the end will not be at once.

  73. Then, he said to them, nation will rise against nation,

  74. and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, and

  75. in various places famines and pestilences, and there will be

  76. terrors and great signs from heaven. But before all this

  77. they will lay their hands on you and persecute you,

  78. delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you

  79. will be brought before kings and governors. For my name's sake,

  80. this will be your opportunity to bear witness.

  81. Settle it.

  82. Therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer,

  83. For I will give you a mouth and wisdom which

  84. none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

  85. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers,

  86. and relatives and friend ends, and some.

  87. Of you they will put to death.

  88. You will be hated by all for my name's sake,

  89. but not a hair of your head will perish.

  90. By your endurance, you will gain your lives.

  91. But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know

  92. that its desolation has come near. Then let those who

  93. are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those

  94. who are inside the city depart, and let not those

  95. who are outside or out in the country enter it.

  96. For these are the days of vengeance to fulfill all

  97. that is written alast for women who are pregnant and

  98. for those who are nursing infants in those days, for

  99. there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath

  100. against this people. They will fall by the edge of

  101. the sword and be led captive among all nations, and

  102. Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the gentiles until

  103. the times of the gentiles are fulfilled. Let's pray, Gow.

  104. We thank you for your word, our spiritual food. God,

  105. give us ears to hear your message today, and let

  106. us apply the things you would teach us in it.

  107. Let us not be shy or straight away from the

  108. challenges that you bring up in the scripture. Let us

  109. boldly stand in front of them, ready to take on

  110. the challenge you put before us. And God, we look

  111. to the encouragement you give us as we go through

  112. your scriptures today. The encouragement that will help us walk

  113. in the way that you've called us to walk. So God,

  114. we just think you that we have the ability to

  115. open your word with each other among the fellowship, and

  116. we're so grateful for that blessing and benefit. We thank

  117. you for all this in Jesus name.

  118. Amen.

  119. All right, there's a lot of text. Who are my

  120. planners in here? Raise your hand? Who likes a solid plan,

  121. likes to know the details or every detail before you

  122. start doing.

  123. I want people raising other people's hands for them. It's great.

  124. Like you're going on a road trip, you have to

  125. know every single stop that you're going to make on

  126. the way, as opposed to the spontaneous ones like we'll

  127. just figure out as we go.

  128. I don't really think I'm that way.

  129. I mean I might have been used to be that

  130. way little more when I was younger, but not anymore.

  131. I'm like, I want to know every gas station we're

  132. stopping us so we don't run out of gas on

  133. the way. I want to know the plan for everything.

  134. Some of you know that our youngest just got surgery.

  135. He got his tonsils and adenoids removed last Saturday, and

  136. it was really really cool getting to talk to the

  137. surgeon and the nurses because they gave us all the

  138. details that we need to know. They wanted to help

  139. give us all the information so we knew what to

  140. expect and when. So they told us what the whole

  141. process was for putting him under anesthesia. They said, the

  142. first thing in a little bit of medicine, then they'll

  143. do the gas, and then they'll do the IV, which

  144. is great because if you walk in there and say

  145. here's the needle time for the IV to a nine

  146. year old, he's going to freak out a little bit, right,

  147. So it was nice to know what the process was

  148. going to be for him and for us. They also

  149. told us the exact process of the surgery and how

  150. long it would take, how long he'd be away before

  151. he's brought back into the recovery room. That's nice to

  152. know for parents who were worried while their son is

  153. in surgery for the first time in his life. They

  154. also told us how sleepy he was gonna be when

  155. he came back, and he was sleepy. He was like

  156. laying on his side, eyes barely open. He's trying to

  157. watch the cartoons on the TV. And he's like, Dad,

  158. I did it, and I was like, dude, you did it.

  159. I was so proud of him because he was nervous.

  160. I was told to tell him too, whenever you get

  161. scared and nervous, two things you got to remember. Say

  162. a prayer in your head and think about the swords

  163. that we ordered from Amazon, because we ordered some some

  164. swords to be brave. So it's nice to know some

  165. of those details. They also told us what to watch

  166. out for if he has bleeding in the back of

  167. his throat or if he has severe pain. They also

  168. gave us a plan for how to help with this

  169. pain in medicine schedule.

  170. This is good stuff to know.

  171. They told us what he can and can't do or

  172. eat while in recovery. He just started soccer this past week,

  173. so he gets to go to practice and watch.

  174. It's terrible. He hates it because he wants to play

  175. so bad.

  176. But they gave us all this information, helpful information ahead

  177. of time, so we knew what to expect. I mean,

  178. we're we're like this kind of in general. It's why

  179. we watched the weather. We want to know should I

  180. wear a coat today?

  181. Is it going to rain? Do I need an umbrella?

  182. Is it hot and awesome, so I can wear flip

  183. flops in the tank top. That's why we watch the weather.

  184. What about signs on the road, sharp curve ahead, that's

  185. a good warning. It's a sign to give us a

  186. heads up there's a sharp corner we should probably slow down.

  187. Or flashing lights at a crossroad, a railroad crossing. It's

  188. nice to know when the train's coming so I don't

  189. get hit by the train. Train always wins in that situation,

  190. by the way, but I was reading this past week

  191. about tsunamis, and I was like, the greatest and biggest

  192. warning sign that a tsunami is coming is when there's

  193. an abnormal receding of the waves. So you see the

  194. waves go further back than they normally do. Now that's

  195. a sign of that there's going to be a huge

  196. wave coming. Is this the time to go start picking shells?

  197. Or is this the time to run to high ground?

  198. We want to run to high ground because we given

  199. a warning, right Because what good is a sign or

  200. a heads up if you don't regard it. What good

  201. is a warning if you don't heed it. So I

  202. titled today's message heed the heads up, Heed the heads up,

  203. because Jesus in our text today, he's giving the people

  204. a heads up on what they can expect in the future.

  205. That something's coming up, and he's letting them know ahead

  206. of time, this big thing is going to happen, but

  207. before that, some things must happen. But then he also says,

  208. and before those things happen, something else is going to happen. First,

  209. he's kind of walking it back. He's saying, this is

  210. a big thing is going to happen. Before that, something's

  211. going to happen, but even before that, something else is

  212. going to happen.

  213. He's giving a.

  214. Play by play of how everything is going to go down.

  215. He tell and even tells him what to do while

  216. they're waiting. And this all happens as Jesus is leaving

  217. the temple.

  218. For the day.

  219. He's been going to the temple every morning, arguing with

  220. all the religious leaders and then leaving the city or

  221. leave ye leaving the city every night this week.

  222. But he's leaving the temple for the day.

  223. He sees the rich people giving their gifts, and he

  224. saw the poor widow give her gift.

  225. So we talked about last week, and.

  226. Then his disciples start talking about these beautiful stones, that

  227. the temple is built out of massive beautiful stones.

  228. Verse five. And while some were speaking of the.

  229. Temple how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings,

  230. he said, as for these things you see, the days

  231. will come when there will not be left here one

  232. stone upon another that will not be thrown down. And

  233. they asked him, Teacher, when will these things be and

  234. what will be the sign when these things are about

  235. to take place? This temple was one of the most

  236. beautiful buildings around. It's a structural marvel. Not only is

  237. it built out of these massive decorated stones that were

  238. quarried and looked beautiful, but.

  239. Also there's portions of it that were covered in gold.

  240. So reading this past week, there are certain times you

  241. couldn't even look at the temple because the sun was

  242. bouncing off the gold side. You literally couldn't look at it.

  243. It was like so bright and brilliant that you couldn't

  244. even look at it. This is a beautiful, beautiful building,

  245. So that disciples are talking about how beautiful it is,

  246. and Jesus says, there will be a time when this

  247. is destroyed, where this is gone, and for us this

  248. might not be.

  249. A big deal.

  250. So what a big fancy building gets destroyed. But this

  251. is a big deal, an incredibly big deal for the Jews.

  252. What does a temple represent? It's the meeting places where

  253. a man goes to meet with God. So if that

  254. temple's destroyed.

  255. What does that mean? Where does man go to meet

  256. with God?

  257. It's the place they would go to make their sacrifices

  258. to be cleansed from their sins, and during Passover each

  259. year it was possible, they say that more than a

  260. million Jews would come to the temple.

  261. A million Jews would come to the Jerusalem and go

  262. visit the temple.

  263. So this building is extremely important to the Jews, so

  264. it makes sense why his disciples would say, when is

  265. this going to be destroyed? Jesus says, not a single

  266. stone will be left upon another, and they're like, when's

  267. that going to happen? You just told us that the Temple,

  268. our most important building in our most important city, was

  269. going to be destroyed. So what are the signs when

  270. this is about to take place? But before Jesus actually

  271. answers specifically their question, he warns them in verse eight

  272. and he says, see that you were not led astray

  273. tells them something right out the gates. See that you

  274. were not led astray. For many will come in my

  275. name saying I am he and the time is at hand.

  276. Do not go after them. And when you hear of

  277. wars and tumults, do not be terrified. For these things

  278. must first take place. But the end will not be

  279. at once. There will be people who claim that they

  280. are the Christ. We know this through history because we've

  281. seen it. There will be people saying it's go time.

  282. But don't be led astray.

  283. There are false teachers, there's false prophets, there's false Christ.

  284. It's not time yet.

  285. So Jesus is saying, when you hear of wars or

  286. and says tumult, that sounds or rumblings of wars. And

  287. if you read this account in Matthew and Mark, they

  288. say wars or rumors of wars, still not time. Still

  289. not time yet. All this must first take place. But

  290. the end, Jesus says, the end will not be at once,

  291. and that means it will not follow immediately. Jesus is

  292. calling this time when the temple gets destroyed, the end.

  293. And it's true, the destruction of the temple, it would

  294. be the end of an age. It would signify the

  295. end of the Old Covenant, the old way of doing things.

  296. With no temple, it is no longer possible to follow

  297. some of the Old Testament laws and the Old Covenant laws.

  298. And you guys know when this actually happened in history.

  299. Happened in seventy eighty.

  300. In seventy a d rome came in and ended the

  301. Jewish revolt and completely destroyed the city of Jerusalem and

  302. obliterated the temple. Not one stone was left upon another.

  303. That was the end of things as the Jews saw it.

  304. This is the end.

  305. But Jesus says, before this end happens, there will be

  306. false Christs and wars. So don't be led astray by

  307. other people. He's saying, heed the heads up. I'm giving

  308. you a heads up, a warning, heed it, letting you

  309. go ahead of time so you're not deceived. And then

  310. Jesus goes into some more about these signs and what

  311. will happen before the end in verse ten. Then he

  312. said to them nation will rise against nation, and kingdom

  313. against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes and in various

  314. places famines and pestilences, and there will be terrors and

  315. great signs from heaven.

  316. Well, that all sounds pretty ominous. That's kind of bad.

  317. Oh you mean before the end, it's gonna get mega

  318. terrible great, that's awesome. This is bad news for them

  319. to hear all this information. This is heavy stuff. And

  320. Jesus said all of this in thirty three AD. So

  321. this past week confession time, I got really nerdy about

  322. the history stuff and I.

  323. Got pretty excited about it. So you're gonna get a

  324. little history today.

  325. But it's really really important stuff for us to understand

  326. because I think it's gonna bolster our faith to know

  327. actual historical things that have happened. Because Jesus says all

  328. of this in thirty three AD during his ministry towards

  329. the end. Right, he's in Jerusalem. This is where he's

  330. gonna get crucified, So where jesus life on Earth will

  331. end thirty three AD, and he's talking about the destruction

  332. of Jerusalem and the Temple in seventy eighty. So what's

  333. going on between thirty three AD and seventy a D

  334. in the area.

  335. What's going on?

  336. Well, at the time, Rome is the world's superpower and

  337. they're at odds and war with.

  338. Everybody in the area.

  339. Basically everybody, and Rome was expanding its territory most rapidly

  340. under Emperor Claudius between forty one and fifty four AD.

  341. Nation against nation, kingdom against kingdom, wars and tumults, wars

  342. and rumors of wars. They're happening here. But what about

  343. the earthquakes, famines, and pestilences. And if you do a

  344. little more history research, you'll find that there was a

  345. Roman historian named Tacitus. And I'm going to name some

  346. people that are not Christians, they're just historians that recorded

  347. what happened at this time. And this Roman historian Tacitus,

  348. who wrote about the frequent earth He wrote about frequent

  349. earthquakes during the reign of Emperor Claudius, which we just

  350. found out was one through fifty four a d. And

  351. there are also several people including Josiphiss Now this is

  352. a Jewish historian who is alive during the time, and

  353. he wrote about this thing called the Great Famine that

  354. happened in between forty six and forty eight AD, and

  355. that was also under Claudius's reign. So again we're talking

  356. about what's happening between thirty three AD. And seventy a d.

  357. And this is also the same famine that's mentioned in

  358. Acts eleven when the disciples asked the believers send them aid.

  359. So we see this mentioned history in the Bible. It's

  360. all over and there's other historians who also talked about

  361. multiple famines all under the reign of Claudius.

  362. Something is ramping up during this time.

  363. Things are happening more frequently during this specific time, and

  364. it's after Jesus said, look what's about to happen. Josephus

  365. also wrote about how bad the pestilences were. A pestilence

  366. is a plague or diseases that spread, So he's bad

  367. plagues that were all during the Jewish Roman War. Well,

  368. that Jewish Roman War started in sixty six a D.

  369. When the true Jewish revolt started. Can you guess when

  370. that ended? Seventy eight? That ended in seventy a D.

  371. So Jesus is mentioning all these things and we can

  372. look back in history when they actually happened. And the

  373. last thing that Jesus mentioned in this verse here is

  374. that there's terrors and great signs from heavens. Well, what

  375. does he mean signs from heaven? Excuse me, But what

  376. does he mean by that? And I think it's helpful

  377. to know what Greek words were used. And if we

  378. look at that word heaven, it's actually not referring to

  379. the where we think angels are chilling.

  380. It's the skies.

  381. It literally means the aerial heavens or sky, the region

  382. where the clouds and temp tempests gather and where thunder

  383. and lightning are produced. So that verse is saying big

  384. and scary things are gonna happen in the sky. Crazy

  385. things are gonna happen in the sky. And Josephus wrote

  386. about crazy stuff happening in the sky. Right before seventy

  387. eighty there was a star shaped star shaped like a

  388. sword and a comet that appeared over Jerusalem and it

  389. stayed there for a year.

  390. People look up and they're like, what is that. That's

  391. a terror or great sign from the heavens.

  392. He also writes of a night just before passover when

  393. a bright light, so this is in the middle of

  394. the night, a bright light lights up the inner courts

  395. of the temple for about a half hour. And he

  396. writes also about how people saw chariots and armies running

  397. in the clouds around the cities. This is crazy stuff

  398. that's happening in the skies. These terror, terrors are great

  399. signs in the heavens. And Josephus himself says, all sounds

  400. like a fairy tale if it weren't true.

  401. He has people who are seeing it.

  402. He's like interviewing these people and seeing it himself because

  403. he lived through it. These crazy things are happening. There's

  404. voices that they're hearing the temple that says, let us depart.

  405. Hence that's a phrase of judgment, something that would be

  406. said before you remove yourself from the area, and then

  407. judgment comes upon the people. They're hearing these signs or

  408. they're hearing these things, seeing these signs from the sky.

  409. All in Jerusalem before the temples destroyed, terrors and great

  410. signs will come from heaven. So what is my point

  411. in all this history talk, because it it's kind of boring.

  412. I don't Jesse is not in love with the history stuff, and.

  413. I get all nerdy about it. But what's my point

  414. in all of it.

  415. It's because what Jesus said in thirty three AD, we

  416. can actually look back in history and see when these

  417. things happened.

  418. And my hope is that you can.

  419. What it does is puts a mortar in your foundation

  420. of faith that we can see. Like what Jesus said,

  421. We've said this all the time. God is the same

  422. yesterday's day, tomorrow. What he says will come to pass.

  423. He is trustworthy, he is faithful. We know that, and

  424. this is just more evidence and proof of that. So

  425. it just bolsters our strength and faith in knowing that

  426. God will do what he says. So Jesus continues, before

  427. all these wars and crazy signs from the skies, something

  428. else is going to happen first.

  429. So again he's starting from the end. He's saying, this

  430. is the thing that's going to happen.

  431. Before that, some stuff's going to happen, and even before that,

  432. some more stuff's going to happen.

  433. Look at verse twelve.

  434. But before all this, they will lay their hands on

  435. you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues

  436. and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors.

  437. From my name's sake, this will be your opportunity to

  438. bear witness.

  439. Settle it.

  440. Therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer,

  441. for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which

  442. none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

  443. Verse sixteen.

  444. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers

  445. and relatives and friends, and some of you they will

  446. put to death. You'll be hated by all for my

  447. name's sake, but not a hair of your head will perish.

  448. By your endurance, you will gain your lives. So even

  449. before these crazy signs start happening, You're going to be persecuted.

  450. Is what Jesus is telling them.

  451. You're gonna experience persecution. Even your own family and friends

  452. are going to be turning you in. They're gonna be

  453. delivering you over. You're gonna be hated by all for

  454. the sake of Jesus' name. Jesus himself said he didn't

  455. come to bring peace but a sword. The following Jesus

  456. might bring some dissension, even among your own family.

  457. But when you were brought before.

  458. The authorities, Jesus says, this is your chance to bear witness.

  459. That is so important. This is your chance to bear witness.

  460. Do we think of moments of persecution as opportunities to

  461. bear witness? That's not usually my first thought. I'm like

  462. I'm being persecuted. It's like this is frustrating. I don't

  463. first think like, oh, I should rejoice because I'm sharing

  464. the sufferings of Christ like the Apostles did do. I

  465. think of these moments as opportunities to bear witness, to

  466. share the Gospel of Jesus with others, because this is

  467. what Jesus is telling the people to do, and that

  468. is what the Apostles experience altered the Book of Acts.

  469. I don't know the last time you read the Book

  470. of Acts. You should read it again.

  471. It's awesome. The Apostles and.

  472. The disciples, they experienced this, being beaten and told not

  473. to preach and teach in the name of Jesus anymore.

  474. But what do they do? They said, who should we

  475. obey God? Or man?

  476. You tell me, She'll always obey God? And then they

  477. went on preaching. They continue to preach more and more.

  478. This is also the same kinds of things that Jesus

  479. told the twelve Disciples when he sent him out on mission.

  480. If you read that in Matthew chapter ten, don't try

  481. to plan ahead what you will say. Jesus himself will

  482. give them the words to say. And that's actually how

  483. God works. Often he doesn't give you what you need

  484. until you need it. I was a while ago there

  485. was I read the story about a little girl who

  486. was being taught about the martyrs and she said to

  487. her dad, Dad, I don't know if I can I

  488. have enough strength to be a martyr for Jesus. And

  489. her dad said, well, when do I give you when

  490. we go to the fair? When do I give you

  491. money to buy the things you want? And she said, well,

  492. when I want to buy the thing? And He's like yes,

  493. And I think God will give you the strength to

  494. be a martyr when you need it. God will oftentimes

  495. gives us what we need when we need it, not before.

  496. We have to walk through the thing and rely on

  497. Him the whole way. So Jesus is going to give

  498. the words, and this scripture says a mouth and wisdom

  499. that no one can speak against.

  500. That's pretty awesome.

  501. It's basically like what he's been doing in the temple

  502. every single day talking to people. He's been responding to

  503. them and they can't say anything back. They're like, I

  504. don't even know how to respond to what Jesus just

  505. asked or how he responds to their questions. But then

  506. after saying that he's going to give a mouth and wisdom,

  507. he says something slightly confusing. Says that even though some

  508. of you will be put to death, that not a

  509. hair of your hair on your head will perish or

  510. be lost. Well, that sounds confusing a little bit, So

  511. what does that mean. What it means is that man

  512. can only kill the body, but he cannot touch your soul.

  513. Man can kill the body, but he cannot touch your soul.

  514. Even though you'll be put to death, if you endure

  515. in faith till the end, you will gain your life.

  516. You will gain your life. And that word life means

  517. your eternal life in the Kingdom of God, the life

  518. that is destined to enjoy the Messianic salvation, that saving

  519. that comes from the Messiah. He's telling his disciples endure

  520. through the persecution.

  521. No matter what.

  522. No matter what persecution you who comes against you, endure

  523. through it all because those who endure it to the

  524. end will be saved and they will receive the crown

  525. of life. And for the last part of our text,

  526. Jesus kind of goes back into talking about the end

  527. seventy eighty and he gives another warning. So look at

  528. verse twenty. But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,

  529. then know that its desolation has come near. Then let

  530. those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and

  531. let those who are inside the city depart, and let

  532. not those who are out in the country enter it.

  533. For these are the day a vengeance to fulfill all

  534. that is written, a last for women who are pregnant,

  535. and for those who are nursing infants in those days,

  536. for there will be great distress upon the earth and

  537. wrath against this people. They will fall by the edge

  538. of the sword and be led captive among all nations,

  539. and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the gentiles

  540. until the times of the gentiles are fulfilled. So now

  541. Jesus gets to the final sign. This is your last warning.

  542. This is the final thing you're gonna see. The people

  543. wanted to know when the temple was gonna be destroyed,

  544. and Jesus gave him the answer. When you see Jerusalem

  545. surrounded by the armies, get out. Telling you when you

  546. see it surrounded, get out. It's the last warning. And

  547. that's what happened in seventy eighty because Rome surrounded and

  548. besieged the city during Passover. Guys, remember how many people

  549. came to the city and to Jerusalem during the passover

  550. million more.

  551. This all happened during Passover, and the.

  552. Walls that the Jews thought could never be destroyed they fell.

  553. The city and the temple were leveled. So some people

  554. argue that somewhere around a million Jews were killed that day.

  555. And Jesus is warning the people. When you see the

  556. army surrounding Jerusalem, it's time. Jerusalem's desolation is near. Get

  557. out of the city, run to the hills. I'm warning you,

  558. I'm giving you the heads up. There will be a

  559. great distress upon the earth. And that word earth means land,

  560. a country, land enclosed within fixed boundaries, at tract of land, territory,

  561. or region. So in that space, in that place, in

  562. that land, there will be great distress and wrath.

  563. Against this people.

  564. So what's going to happen is going to happen here

  565. in Jerusalem, and it is going to happen to the

  566. people here. The destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple is

  567. an act of God's judgment and wrath, his wrath on

  568. the people for the rejection of Jesus and continual sin.

  569. We talked about it. When Jesus wrote into the city,

  570. he was weeping. Why was he weeping because he knew

  571. of the future judgment that was coming upon Jerusalem, the

  572. city of Jerusalem and the people.

  573. And God is broken hearted.

  574. Even though he knows that judgment must happen for sin,

  575. that he is a just God, he still weeps when

  576. it has to be exacted like that still breaks God's heart.

  577. He knows what their future holds, and he's telling them now.

  578. He wept over it on his way into the city,

  579. and now he's telling them these are the days of

  580. vengeance that have been written about and prophesied about. It's

  581. not a secret, and he's making sure it's not a

  582. surprise either, because he's telling them. God, like many times

  583. throughout history, is using another nation to execute his judgment

  584. and use the gentile nation of Rome to do it.

  585. Jerusalem will be trampled under the feet of gentiles. He's

  586. using Rome to do it. But how long will Jerusalem

  587. be trampled under foot? How long is that going to be?

  588. And Jesus says, until the times the gentiles have been fulfilled.

  589. So depending on how you interpret trampled on her foot

  590. will determine how you interpret when it ends. And this

  591. could mean that what Paul was talking about in Roman's

  592. eleven when he says, until the full number of gentiles

  593. have been brought into the people of God. Now I'm

  594. not positive about that, so take that for a grain

  595. of sand or a grain of salt. But some people

  596. will argue for that. But what I am positive about

  597. is these days that the gentiles are trampling Jerusalem underfoot,

  598. they are numbered, they will end at some point.

  599. Can I have the worship team come up, please.

  600. So summarize kind of all what we talked about before

  601. we kind of talk about what it means for us

  602. or what we should do. Let's just summarize what we've read.

  603. The disciples are admiring the temple. Jesus tells them one

  604. day it's all going to be destroyed. So the people

  605. ask when's that going to happen, because this is really

  606. important to us, and Jesus gives them the heads up

  607. on what's going to happen and what they should do.

  608. There will be false christ who try to lead you astray.

  609. He says, don't be let astray. You will be persecuted.

  610. But he tells you and endure through it. There will

  611. be wars and tumults and rumors of wars. They'd be

  612. crazy signs, earthquakes, famines, plagues, signs in the sky, and

  613. all this will happen before the destruction. But when you

  614. see the army surrounding the city, that's when it's time.

  615. That's your warning.

  616. So when this happens, get out of the city. Just

  617. get out.

  618. Giving you a heads up, So heed the warning, So

  619. heed the heads up.

  620. Jesus is telling the people something big is coming. That's obvious.

  621. There's something big coming, and then he tells him what

  622. to do while it's all unfolding. But just like the

  623. people who Jesus is talking to, we also know that

  624. something big is coming in our life.

  625. Jesus is returning. That's a big thing coming up.

  626. Jesus is returning, and we've been given a heads up

  627. that he's on his way and that will be the

  628. end of all things as we know it. You guys

  629. seen in the parallel here Jesus talking to the people

  630. saying some big thing is coming that's going to end

  631. everything as you know it. And we're told that Jesus

  632. is coming back and we're waiting for it. And when

  633. he comes back, everything will be different, everything will change,

  634. nothing will be as it is. It will be the

  635. end of the age. And we've been warned that he's

  636. coming back to judge the living and the dead. The

  637. perfect righteous King is coming again. And when he shows up,

  638. every single knee will bow and every single tongue will

  639. confess that Jesus's Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  640. Nobody escapes that, dead or alive. We are all raised

  641. to bow, to be on our knee before King Jesus.

  642. This is when Jesus will separate the sheep from the goats,

  643. to those who are in him and those who are

  644. not in him, those who have put faith in him

  645. and trusted in him alone for salvation, and those who haven't.

  646. And if we have put faith in Jesus, then we will.

  647. Enter into eternal life, peace and rest with him. But

  648. if we haven't put faith in him, we will enter

  649. into eternal punishment for our sin, because the wages of

  650. our sin is death, and that still rests on our

  651. head unless we put faith in Jesus, allowing it to

  652. be on his So my plea to those who haven't

  653. put faith in Jesus is that you would repent of

  654. your unbelief. That is the first thing. The first sin

  655. to repent of is that you don't believe. To repent

  656. of your unbelief and turn to Jesus and trust in

  657. him only for salvation. That's my plea to those who

  658. haven't put faith in him. There is no other way

  659. to receive forgiveness in eternal life than faith in Jesus.

  660. Jesus is returning. It's the big thing that's coming up.

  661. That's what we've been warned about. And I think the

  662. three things that Jesus told the people in our text today,

  663. I'm seeing three things that I'm pulled out. I think

  664. those are the same three things we should do. It's

  665. not overcomplicated. Number one is don't be led astray. That

  666. was a clear call that Jesus put to the people, said,

  667. don't be let astray. Said there will be people say

  668. they are coming in his name, but they're false. Don't

  669. follow them, don't believe them. And there's all kinds of

  670. people nowadays who claim to be in the name of

  671. Jesus and they are not. Don't be led astray. There's

  672. people who will be speaking falsehoods. Just a couple of

  673. weeks ago, we talked about choosing your leaders wisely, because

  674. you end up in the same place as those you follow.

  675. How do we spot the counterfeit? We spot the counterfeit

  676. by knowing the real things so well that the fake

  677. is obvious. Know your Bible, know what God says, know

  678. what it means in context. It's the only way you're

  679. gonna know that. The only way you're gonna spot the

  680. counterfeit or the false. You will know the liar who's

  681. standing right in front of you, and may they might

  682. not be lying to you with ill intent, they might

  683. be deceived or naive themselves. But still, those you follow,

  684. you're going to end up in the same place, whether

  685. they whether they're intentionally doing it or not. So don't

  686. be led astray, don't be fooled by the fake. Don't

  687. be led astray by false Christs. So that's number one,

  688. don't be led astray. Number two is endure through persecution.

  689. My friends who like lists, this is your list. It's

  690. three things to do from today's text, Endure through persecution.

  691. Jesus gave the people heads up that they would be

  692. persecuted for his name's sake, and we're promised the same

  693. thing today. We're promised the same thing today. People who

  694. hate Jesus are gonna hate us too. But he says,

  695. when they hate you, remember they hated me first.

  696. That's what Jesus said. So don't be surprised when it comes.

  697. You've been warned. Heed the heads up.

  698. Expect it to come forward to be against you at

  699. some point in your life. Expect persecution, and then endure it.

  700. Endure the persecution, no matter what Jesus says. By your endurance,

  701. we will gain our lives. So let nothing stop.

  702. You from believing in Jesus.

  703. Let nothing stop you from believing in him, keeping faith

  704. in him and following him. I think those only those

  705. who believe in Jesus will follow him and obey him.

  706. That's a clear thing in scripture. So don't stop I don't.

  707. Stop believing, don't stop believing, and don't stop following no

  708. matter what, even if they throw you in prison, keep

  709. the faith.

  710. You keep following Jesus.

  711. Or even if they put you to death, endure in

  712. faith to the end. It may cost your life, but

  713. this life is this long compared to eternity, So what's

  714. really real? Get out of the matrix This just real

  715. because we can touch it, see it, smell it, taste

  716. the good food. But this is not forever. Set your

  717. mind on things above, not on the temporal, the things

  718. down below. Think about forever. Think about eternity. Read First Peter.

  719. That will help you get through adversity and persecution and trials.

  720. Endure through the trials. Endure through persecution. Even if they

  721. put us to death. Worst thing to do is kill

  722. our body. That's all they can do. Can't touch your soul.

  723. They cannot touch your soul. So endure through persecution. The

  724. one who remains steadfast receive the crown of life promised

  725. to those who love the Lord.

  726. Number one, don't be led astray.

  727. Number two is endure through persecution, and number three is

  728. to bear witness while we wait.

  729. To bear witness while we wait.

  730. Jesus told them, you're gonna be brought before kings and governors.

  731. Use this as your opportunity to bear witness. So are

  732. we using the time we've been given to bear witness

  733. to Jesus? Is that something that's kind of floating around

  734. on the back of our head, or is that something

  735. we're actively pursuing because we're in the in between we're

  736. waiting for the big event to happen, for Jesus to

  737. come back. We're still in this in between time. We

  738. can look back at all the things that Jesus has

  739. done in the past. We're in this in between time.

  740. Now is the time to bear witness to the lost,

  741. to the lost and dying world. Every single day, people

  742. are dying who don't know Jesus. We got to tell

  743. them they've never heard the gospel. That should give us

  744. a sense of urgency to go out there. We sit

  745. next to coworkers every day, or maybe we're digital co

  746. workers or whatever. Nowaday is right, but just sit next

  747. to them, you interact with them.

  748. Do you know where they're going? You know, so if

  749. they've heard the gospel.

  750. If you don't know, ask them, or just say hey,

  751. I want to tell you.

  752. Let me tell you something, Buy him lunch, tell him

  753. a gospel.

  754. Preach the good News of Jesus to everyone everywhere, even

  755. in the midst of persecution, even in the midst of persecution.

  756. To use that as an opportunity to share the gospel.

  757. And I think endurance might be your biggest witness. It

  758. might be the thing someone's looking at you and you

  759. are just being persecuted.

  760. Left and right, or walking through hard times.

  761. You feel like your whole world is in flames, and

  762. you're holding faith in Christ the whole time.

  763. Someone looks at that and.

  764. Says, why that's not normal? Why do you still have faith?

  765. Everything's crumbling around you and you still believe. I think

  766. that's your strongest witness the midst of that persecution, to

  767. stand firm in your faith. Next step is just telling

  768. someone about it. Always be ready to give the answer

  769. for the hope that you have to not even explain it.

  770. Sometimes you're like, I don't know. I'm good with God,

  771. so I'm good with everything.

  772. I know.

  773. My eternity is set. So what do I have to

  774. be anxious about? What do I have to be worried about?

  775. Again?

  776. The worst anyone can do to you is kill your body.

  777. They cannot touch your soul. And sharing the Gospels like

  778. the main thing Jesus told us to do. He says,

  779. to go make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in

  780. the name of the Father and of the Son and

  781. of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything

  782. Jesus commanded them.

  783. It's like the main thing he told us to do.

  784. So are we looking for those opportunities or are we

  785. creating those opportunities? Are we making these opportunities? Jesus is returning,

  786. you guys, He's on his way back. The clock is ticking.

  787. That should put a little bit of fire under our feet,

  788. especially if we're good with God already. That should put

  789. a little fire under our feet where we're running out

  790. of time.

  791. People need to know.

  792. People have got to know the good news of Jesus Christ,

  793. that he saves us for our sin. This book is

  794. not a book that you follow it and you have

  795. a great life.

  796. That's not the point of this book.

  797. The point is this book is the triumph of Christ

  798. over sin and death and saving lost sinners. That is

  799. the point of this book. So what are we supposed

  800. to do? Bear witness? Bear witness. That's what we're supposed

  801. to do. Feel that sense of urgency in that pressure.

  802. I don't want to like, I'm not trying to convict you,

  803. but I know the Holy Spirit will convict you.

  804. So don't ignore that conviction.

  805. If you feel a little pressure and you're like I

  806. feel a little uncomfortable, embrace the uncomfortable. We need to

  807. get comfortable being uncomfortable. That's when we grow being comfortable

  808. being uncomfortable. And plus, what's the worst that's gonna happen?

  809. You say, hey, I want to tell you about Jesus,

  810. and they're like, I hate Jesus. Get on my face. Okay,

  811. I'm praying for you anyway, that's the worst. We don't

  812. live in a time where persecution is that rough. Yeah,

  813. and Chelsea says, here, look at do a little research.

  814. The rest of the world. Persecution is a lot different.

  815. We have nothing to be worried about. And even if

  816. we were skinned alive or put to death or whatever,

  817. we still are called to preach the Gospel, to bear

  818. witness to this loss and dying world. We've been warned

  819. and given a heads up that something huge is coming,

  820. something that changes everything. Nothing will be the same when

  821. Jesus comes back. We aren't waiting for a city to

  822. be surrounded so we flee to the mountains. We're waiting

  823. for Jesus to return to judge and we're telling them

  824. these people to flee from their sin, to repent and

  825. believe in Jesus. So again, false teachers, false prophets, false

  826. Christ will come. Don't be led astray don't be led

  827. astray no matter what comes against you. Endure through the persecution.

  828. Endure through the persecution. And three is bear witness while

  829. we wait for Jesus return. To bear witness while we're

  830. waiting for Jesus' return. We've been given a heads up

  831. what's coming, but it's on us to heed the warning.

  832. To heed the heads up.

  833. Amen. Can you guys stand on your feet please,
