  1. Welcome to the roots, where it's all about Jesus. We

  2. love God, we love people, we reach the lost, and

  3. we make disciples. One of the main ways that we

  4. like where we make disciples is by regularly going through

  5. God's word. And so once again, my word count was

  6. up there a little bit this week, so we're going

  7. to jump right into it. Actually, last week I did

  8. a surprisingly all right job of getting us out of here.

  9. So we're gonna try again. But it's gonna be a

  10. good time. So we have been in the Book of Exodus.

  11. You can go ahead and turn there with me now,

  12. But we've been in the Book of Exodus, where we're

  13. seeing how God delivers, God demands, and God dwells. And

  14. over the last several weeks we have been looking at

  15. how God delivers. And now we're actually going to transition

  16. in the Book of Exodus to God's demands, or more specifically,

  17. we're going to see God, having after delivered his people,

  18. the people of Israel, now brings them to himself. He's

  19. going to invite the people to covenant with him, then

  20. reveal himself and his commands, and then kind of what

  21. those commands are, the placing as demands upon the people.

  22. So we're gonna we're gonna be coming about two chapters

  23. today and so I actually I'm going to read a

  24. portion from our text and we're going to pray jump

  25. right into his sound good, perfect. So we're gonna be

  26. looking at Exodus chapters nineteen and twenty, and I'll be

  27. reading from chapter twenty, verses eighteen through twenty one. If

  28. you do not have a Bible, we have some out

  29. in the lobby. Please go grab one and keep it

  30. for yourself. Exodus twenty. Starting in verse eighteen, it says,

  31. now when all the people saw the thunder and the

  32. flashes of lightning, and the sound of the trumpet and

  33. the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and

  34. they stood far off and said to Moses, you speak

  35. to us, and we will listen. But do not let

  36. God speak to us lest we die. Moses said to

  37. the people, do not fear, for God has come to

  38. test you, that the fear of Him may be before you,

  39. that you may not sin. The people stood far off

  40. while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.

  41. This is God's word, Lord, we lift up this time

  42. to you. We asked that as we sung these songs,

  43. that you've been preparing our hearts to receive the word

  44. that you have for us today. We asked that we

  45. would have a higher view of your holiness. We'd have

  46. a higher view of your name and your character who

  47. you are. We would walk and fear and holiness and

  48. love before you as your people. Please help your word

  49. this day take root in our hearts. Help us be

  50. ready to receive and willing to respond to Jesus name,

  51. we pray. Everyone said, amen. All right, Well, I'm gonna

  52. butcher this beginning, so you gotta just bear with me here.

  53. Does anyone know what cidero dromo Phobia is? Kind of

  54. a long word, definitely too long for me, but it

  55. is the fear of trains. It is the fear of trains. Now.

  56. When I was sixteen, my grandma took me to Italy,

  57. which was really awesome for it and we went for

  58. about three weeks and so we traveled everywhere by train.

  59. It was really awesome. Got really used to being around trains.

  60. It was quite an enjoyable experience. A lot of stories

  61. from all kinds of experiences with those trains, but there's

  62. one story specifically that sticks with me to this day,

  63. and that was we had just gotten off at the

  64. station and we were waiting to go to our hotel.

  65. I was about sixteen at the time, and while we're

  66. standing there, I kind of start dozing off. While we're

  67. standing next to the tracks, well, all of a sudden,

  68. a train started blowing its horn, and I was like, well,

  69. surely it can't be coming on our tracks, because they

  70. just one just came, and so I ignored it and continued

  71. staring at the plastic bag that I saw blowing the

  72. wind and not realizing that I had actually been over

  73. the yellow line that they have. If you've ever been

  74. to a train station, you know, or maybe a subway

  75. station or something kind of like that, where they have

  76. a yellow line that is meant to keep you from

  77. the tracks a safe distance away in case the train

  78. happens to show up in the station and you're standing there.

  79. If you're behind the yellow line, you will be safe.

  80. If you're on a and or over like I was,

  81. you are in danger. And so finally, after several horn blasts,

  82. I decided to turn to my left, in which case

  83. I saw a train coming directly into the station at

  84. a very alarming pace. It was kind of one of

  85. those life flashed before your eyes situations. So in the

  86. quick moment that I could respond, I took a step

  87. forward and just in time for it to only hit

  88. the back of my backpack and kind of knock me

  89. a little bit to my side as I was walking forward.

  90. So it was coming in. The conductor of the train

  91. was not very happy. He came and yelled at my

  92. grandma in Italian, so we don't know what he said,

  93. but you can tell that he was not pleased. So

  94. from that day on and several years afterwards, back in

  95. the States with my friends, we're driving around in cars,

  96. but anytime our car would approach train tracks, I would

  97. start to tense up and kind of sees up that

  98. there was this fear that would start to set in,

  99. start to get uneasy. I wouldn't feel quite like myself,

  100. and there wasn't a train in sight, it was just

  101. being near the train tracks. Now, do you know that

  102. there's a difference between a phobia and a fear? Do

  103. you know that some of you? Maybe maybe you do

  104. know that, maybe you don't know that. Well, here's the

  105. difference between a phobia and a fear. A phobia is

  106. an irrational fear of something. It's an irrational fear or something,

  107. and a actual fear or something is just a fear.

  108. It's like that's there's reasonable means or reasonable reasons that

  109. you should actually be afraid, should approach with warranted caution

  110. given the situation. So for a couple examples, if you

  111. have a fear of sharks while at the aquarium or

  112. while reading a picture book where they cannot hurt you,

  113. that's a little bit more of a phobia because there's

  114. nothing in that moment to be afraid of. Maybe you're

  115. swimming in a lake where there's definitely no sharks, maybe

  116. that phobia starts to show up. A healthy fear of

  117. sharks is when you're swimming in the open ocean where

  118. sharks live. That would be a healthy fear of sharks.

  119. Maybe a fear of scissors or knives in and of themselves,

  120. you don't want to be around them, maybe needles a caution.

  121. That would be a phobia of like I can't even

  122. be around those things, they're too dangerous. A real fear,

  123. A healthy fear would be you're careful in how you

  124. handle these scissors or these knives because you know the

  125. damage that can be done, so you're cautious and the

  126. way that you approach them. There's a healthy fear well,

  127. a paralyzing fear of being around train tracks in and

  128. of themselves is an irrational fear. Train tracks aren't going

  129. to do anything to you. They're staying right there, but

  130. a real consideration of the caution that needs to be

  131. given when being around train tracks. There's a healthy fear

  132. of when I approach these things, I should look both ways.

  133. I should make sure that I'm not trying to beat

  134. the train. If the little arms are closing and the

  135. lights are flashing, there's a healthy fear. And it's important

  136. that we understand the difference between these types of fear because,

  137. just like in our text today, if we get or

  138. if we have the wrong kind of fear, if we

  139. don't fear how we should, then we won't respond how

  140. we ought to respond. Instead of responding with caution and

  141. intentionality or reverence, we may be paralyzed, we may run away,

  142. or maybe miss the point entirely. And today we're going

  143. to be looking at the proper type of fear that

  144. we should have, the type of fear that we should have,

  145. and the type of fear that God actually wants us

  146. to have. And that could sound kind of weird because

  147. it's like all these Bible verses that say like be

  148. not afraid, be not afraid, and those are totally there.

  149. But there is a healthy type of fear that God

  150. wants us to have, not an irrational fear, but a

  151. completely rational one. That is the fear of God, a

  152. fear and reverence for his glory, for his holiness, and

  153. for his words. What I believe we're gonna see from

  154. our text today is this, if we don't fear God

  155. as we should, then we won't love God as we ought.

  156. If we don't fear God as we should, then we

  157. won't love God as we ought. So today's message is

  158. simply titled helpful Fear of the Holy God, Helpful Fear

  159. of the Holy God. And we're gonna look at our

  160. text actually in four main sections. The four sections are

  161. the invitation of God's Covenant, the preparation of God's coming,

  162. the declaration of God's commands, and the mediation in God's

  163. care for us. So we're going to look and jump

  164. right into this first section, the invitation to God's Covenant.

  165. So after about three months of drinking water from rocks,

  166. and having throwing logs in water to make it not

  167. bitter anymore, and eating heavenly bread and meat at night time.

  168. The people of Israel arrive at their destination, which is

  169. the mountain or Mount Sinai, the same place that God

  170. had first revealed himself to Moses in the burning bush.

  171. It's the same place where God had commissioned Moses on

  172. his behalf and told Moses that he would know that

  173. God actually sent him when he wants a goods or

  174. once again stood at this mountain with the freed people

  175. of Israel. And just like God had said it would

  176. happen here, it is now fulfilled. So Moses goes up

  177. the mountain and meets with God, and God speaks to Moses.

  178. So let's look at this. Verse three says while Moses

  179. went up to God, the Lord called to him out

  180. of the mountain, saying, thus you shall say to the

  181. house of Jacob and tell the people of Israel you

  182. yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and

  183. how I bore you on eagle's wings and brought you

  184. to myself. Now, therefore, if you will indeed obey my

  185. voice and keep my covenant. You shall be my treasured

  186. possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine

  187. you and you shall be to me a kingdom of

  188. priests and a holy nation. These are the words that

  189. you shall speak to the people of Israel. So we're

  190. gonna see this a lot today, this dialogue and information

  191. kind of being passed back and forth by Moses from

  192. God to the people, from the people to God. So

  193. God tells Moses to speak to the people and remind

  194. them about how God had brought them out of their

  195. slavery and thus far taking care of them. But now

  196. here we actually see God invites them to covenant with him,

  197. to be his people. God says, if you obey my voice,

  198. if you obey my covenant, you will be my special possession.

  199. It would be my treasure in all the earth, that

  200. all the earth is his, but you would be His

  201. special people, a holy nation, a kingdom of priests, that

  202. if they obey God's voice, that He will be their

  203. holy God, and they will be His holy people, his

  204. holy representatives. Out of all the peoples of the earth.

  205. They would be a people who would serve God and

  206. be a light to the world. On God's behalf. So

  207. God has now redeemed them from slavery, brought them to himself,

  208. and he doesn't force them into this covenant with him,

  209. but he gives them the conditions of obedience to enter

  210. into covenant with him and tells them the blessings and

  211. promises of what that would mean for the people. So

  212. Moses goes and relates us to the people of Israel,

  213. and they respond with this. They say in verse eight,

  214. all that the Lord has spoken, we will do. And

  215. Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

  216. And this, I mean, this is like, this is a

  217. this is ten out of ten response from the people

  218. of Israel. I mean, last week we looked at kind

  219. of like poor response after poor response after poor response.

  220. They finally come to where God has brought them to.

  221. He says, if you would obey my voice, if you

  222. will keep my covenant, you will be my people. And

  223. the people respond with them everything he says, we will do.

  224. So it's truly incredible. God offers to enter into covenant

  225. with these people that they'd be his possession, his holy nation,

  226. and the people agree to live according to all that

  227. God speaks. And amazing enough, this is actually the same

  228. exact language that Peter pulls from when he's talking about believers.

  229. Look at this one Peter two nine. He says, but

  230. you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a what

  231. a holy nation, a people for his own possession. That

  232. you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you

  233. out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were

  234. not a people, but now you are God's people. Once

  235. you had not receive mercy, but now you have received mercy.

  236. That when God saves the people to himself, brings him

  237. into covenant with himself, that he does so for the

  238. purpose of us being his own possession. That we would

  239. proclaim his goodness to those around us, the nations around us.

  240. We proclaim the greatness of his works, the greatness of salvation,

  241. that He's worked in our own life. That people would

  242. look at our lives and see that we've been delivered

  243. and set free by God, and know that there is

  244. a God who saves and redeems and who is living

  245. and active in the world today. So I think it's

  246. a really fair question for us to ask ourselves if

  247. people actually looked at our lives, is that what they

  248. would see? If people looked at our lives, would they

  249. see that you are not the same. I know who

  250. you were, but you don't do those things anymore. You

  251. seem like you have a new purpose, or you live

  252. with some kind of hope, or you live with some

  253. kind of intention in your life with all the actions

  254. that you do. What is that? And I think here

  255. we're seeing it plainly put that it's what would make

  256. us look different. Is just the plain, humble, willing obedience

  257. to his voice that when God speaks, we go amen,

  258. and we don't just leave it there. We actually put

  259. it into practice. We do what he says. And so

  260. I think another question is do we actually have this

  261. humble posture of acceptance to the things that God commands

  262. us to do? Are we ready and willing that God says, hey,

  263. you're my people. When I speak, what I ask is

  264. that you obey. Now? Are we already hesitant or do

  265. we have this posture just like we see the Israelites here.

  266. I think it's a fair point for us to examine

  267. this in ourselves, because if we claim to be God's

  268. special possession and where his representatives, if we claim to

  269. serve the living Holy God, and then people look at

  270. our lives. Is that what they would see or would

  271. that be bogus and be like, I don't see anything

  272. holy about your life. You serve the Holy God, And

  273. it's not to say that the grace that he extends

  274. to us doesn't cover those sins and cover that and

  275. it call us back, But it's not We shouldn't stay

  276. in those places. He's brought us out of our slavery,

  277. out of our sin. So again, a fair question for

  278. application would be for us to ask ourselves, do I

  279. represent a holy God? Well? Do I represent a holy God?

  280. Well as a person in his holy nation? Do you

  281. live a life under your Holy God? And that shown

  282. by your obedience to His voice? See? Very plainly, that's

  283. what we are seeing right here now. Like most of us,

  284. I think that the answer is pretty clear. We're not holy,

  285. we are not that holy. We're sin riddled, we're problematic,

  286. we're quick to go back to our slavery. I mean,

  287. that's what we covered a lot of last week. These

  288. people were like, man, I had it better when I

  289. was in slavery, and we go like, you guys are crazy.

  290. But then we turn around and God's like, oh, by

  291. my voice, I'm like sh by my sin. Here's the thing.

  292. God knows that. And so moving on in our text,

  293. God calls for the people to make themselves ready, to

  294. prepare themselves for him to come to them. So we're

  295. gonna look at the preparation for God's coming. Look at

  296. this in verse nine, and it says, and the Lord

  297. said to Moses, behold, I'm coming to you in a

  298. thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak

  299. with you, and may also believe you forever. When Moses

  300. told the words of the people to the Lord, the

  301. Lord said to Moses, go to the people and consecrate

  302. them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments

  303. and be ready for the third day. For on the

  304. third day, the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai

  305. in the sight of all the people, and you shall

  306. set limits for the people all around, saying take care

  307. not to go up into the mountain or touch the

  308. edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put

  309. to death. So God tells Moses that He's going to

  310. come down in the sight of all the people, so

  311. that the people will hear God speak to Moses in

  312. front of everyone, and so everyone will have no doubt

  313. that really God is speaking to Moses. So God tells

  314. Moses that the people need to get ready. God's holy

  315. train is on the way. God's holy train is coming.

  316. That the people are to wash themselves, refrain from sexual relations,

  317. to not cross the barrier set at the edge of

  318. the mountain, and that is the barrier to keep the

  319. people from coming near to the holy presence of God.

  320. And that could seem kind of weird, but actually it's

  321. much like the yellow line at the train station. Man,

  322. it's saying, Hey, this thing's going to come pass through,

  323. and you do not want to be in its way.

  324. There's a proximity that's safe for you to be in,

  325. but you need to keep your distance. And we're going

  326. to tell you it's right here behind this yellow line. Now,

  327. if you actually remember when Moses first has his encounter

  328. with God at the burning bush. God told Moses to

  329. do what remove his shoes. He's like, you're standing on

  330. holy ground, so you need to remove your shoes. But

  331. now God is going to come down in an inferno

  332. on the mountain. The mountain is going to be covered

  333. in this thick cloud on fire, So how much more

  334. maybe a distance needs to be kept from a burning

  335. bush where he's like, don't come close, take off your shoes.

  336. This is holy ground. And now the whole mountain is

  337. going to be lit up, and the people are told,

  338. get ready, make these preparations and keep your distance. God

  339. is going to make it evident to the people not

  340. only his words, but also his glorious majesty and holiness.

  341. God's holy presence is going to be on display to

  342. all the people of Israel. And these unholy people need

  343. to keep their distance. They need to clean themselves in

  344. order to even stand before this great sight. But it

  345. is really cool because we're seeing this holy God drawing

  346. near to this unholy people. Look at this, and we

  347. actually get this description of what it was like on

  348. the third day when God arrives in the cloud. Look

  349. at this. Verse sixteen says on the morning of the

  350. third day, there were thunders and lightnings and a thick

  351. cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast,

  352. so that all the people in the camp did what trembled.

  353. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to

  354. meet God. They took their stand at the foot of

  355. the mountain. Now Mount Seina was wrapped in smoke because

  356. the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke

  357. of it went up like the smoke of a kiln,

  358. and the whole mountain trembled greatly. So the people see

  359. this cloud showing up and they begin to tremble. And

  360. then God descends on it in fire, and the mountain

  361. begins to tremble. And as the sound of the trumpet

  362. grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and look at this,

  363. and God answered him in thunder. God answered him in thunder.

  364. The Lord came down on Mount Sinai to the top

  365. of the mountain, and the Lord called Moses to the

  366. top of the mountain. Moses went up. Now, have you

  367. ever been in a thunderstorm? Yeah? Especially, here's the deal.

  368. I thought we had real thunderstorms here, and then I

  369. went like a couple of states east, and then you

  370. realize they are the ones who have the real thunderstorms.

  371. You just get to be in a valley and it

  372. was actually really interesting. We were some family's house, and

  373. their house was this large house in this middle of

  374. this valley, so you could actually see the entire storm

  375. as it was coming in. This is this dark cloud

  376. and as soon it was over us, the thunder and

  377. the lightning. It's shaking that. Now we have lots of

  378. trees around here, we have all kinds of different wind

  379. storms and all kinds of things like that. But that's

  380. the scene that we're getting here is thunder that's shaking,

  381. and lightning that's flashing, and it's it's this. It's awe inspiring,

  382. and quickly you realize just how out of control you are.

  383. You see these, You're like, how would you even fight this?

  384. The wind's just going to blow, The lightning is just

  385. going to strike, and the thunder is just going to shake,

  386. and you all you can do is hide. All you

  387. can do is try and cower or find safety before

  388. it stand no chance, before these storms and God's thick

  389. cloud and fire is surrounding the mountain. And it's interesting

  390. because it says also that there's this trumpet blast that

  391. gets louder and louder, like a holy trumpet declaring the

  392. arrival of a king, or maybe like a train that's

  393. coming into the station, saying it's on the way. That

  394. God speaks in his voice is like thunder, And it's

  395. crazy because it doesn't even say like thunder, just says

  396. in thunder. That's how God answers him in thunder. So

  397. for me when I have when I'm around thunderstorms, whom

  398. my wife gets really freaked out about, and I'm like,

  399. it's all right for me. I love it because it

  400. reminds me of this scene. It's terrifying. But I go like,

  401. that's what they experienced. That's what God sounded like, which

  402. is terrifying. That should humble us. But here it's saying

  403. he speaks him in thunder. So you want to know

  404. what God sounds like when he speaks. He sounds like thunder.

  405. It's powerful, and it's big, and it's deathening, it's truly,

  406. it's terrifying, it's awe inspiring. And so then God, when

  407. he shows up, he once again calls Moses back up

  408. the mountain. And I can only imagine that Moses, who

  409. by the way, is eighty years old, is just going

  410. up and down, up and down this mountain getting his

  411. steps in. God then reminds Moses again. Actually it's kind

  412. of interesting if you're reading the text. God once again

  413. reminds Moses of the warning he needs to give to

  414. the people not to come up the mountain lest God

  415. break out against them, to which Moses reasonably enough responds, God,

  416. you already told us that, God, remember you said. And

  417. it's interesting because it could seem like God forgot, but

  418. that's God doesn't forget anything. So what actually is happening

  419. is God is trying to make it very clear the

  420. seriousness of the situation. Not only is there a death

  421. penalty for crossing the mountain, He's like, don't let them

  422. come up lest I break out against them. The people

  423. need to stay back. The people need to take God seriously.

  424. And I think we should take this into account. Too

  425. many of us take God's presence for granted. What do

  426. I mean by that, Well, I think we very often

  427. think that God's presence is meant to be a space

  428. that just makes me feel like comfortable, you know, where

  429. I can let my hair down and really be myself. Really,

  430. we think God's presence is like about us, that it's

  431. for us. But first and foremost, God's presence is for him.

  432. It's about his glory. It's about his greatness. And the

  433. reason we know that is because every single time God's

  434. like actual glories on display, people aren't like, oh, this

  435. is just so nice. People's faces are on the ground.

  436. People fall down as if they're dead. They pass out,

  437. they're not okay, it's too much for them to take in,

  438. and when they finally are able to speak, they start

  439. either speaking gibberish like Peter did on the Mount of Transfiguration.

  440. He's like, you want me to build tense for you guys,

  441. and God's like, what are you talking about? Or or

  442. you're like Isaiah, who's like, I'm a man of unclean lips.

  443. Like you see your sinfulness, you see your depravity revealed

  444. in the presence of God's holiness. Quickly you realize that

  445. you aren't the main character of the movie, you're not

  446. the main character of history, but that now these people

  447. are standing before the true King, the real main character,

  448. the real main character of history, the one who it's

  449. all about, the one to whom all creation owes its existence,

  450. to the one to whom all things were made for,

  451. the one to whom everything is all about. And if

  452. we don't understand how holy God is, we don't really

  453. understand who God is. That doesn't mean we're gonna understand

  454. him fully. It's not even that we can grasp. I mean,

  455. he's infinitely holy. You will never grasp just how holy

  456. he is. But the problem is that sometimes we don't

  457. even think about him being holy, and there are things

  458. about him if we don't understand that that if we

  459. don't understand how holy he is, or that he's holy

  460. in the first place, there's things about God that are

  461. not going to make sense to us. Most of us

  462. know that God is love, so the Bible tells us,

  463. but we define that love, or we define love based

  464. on what we think it should be and what we

  465. feel like it is, instead of basing God's definition of

  466. love in step also with his holiness and his justice.

  467. That's where you end up getting pictures of the cross

  468. where people can look at the picture of across me, like,

  469. look at God's love. But if you remember, that was

  470. not sunshine and rainbows, it was darkness and judgment because

  471. the Holy God was pouring out his wrath on sin,

  472. on Christ. So both of those things are present. God's holiness,

  473. God's love. And when you don't understand God's holiness, there's

  474. a lot of people who just think that God's a meani.

  475. He's a meani, he's mean, that he's not nice, he

  476. has all these weird rules. They don't make any sense.

  477. He's arbitrary when people don't understand that God is holy,

  478. God is just, God is righteous, God is the standard.

  479. So when we're judging God's laws, we're in the wrong position.

  480. He's the lawgiver. If we're not in alignment with his word,

  481. we're the weird ones. You realize standing before God that

  482. He is the standard, and frankly, you don't measure up.

  483. We don't measure up. And here these people standing before

  484. the Holy God have that made very clear to them?

  485. Now because of Jesus, we know that we can approach

  486. God with confidence, But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't

  487. consider the reverence that we should still have in the

  488. presence of our Holy Father. And what I mean by

  489. that is that we shouldn't be flippant. So how even

  490. in our quiet time and our lives lived before him,

  491. how would this knowledge of God's pure holiness impact how

  492. we live before him? Living before his face, knowing that

  493. he watches us, he sees us. How do we prepare

  494. to stand before him? Do we get our minds and

  495. hearts right and ready to be before him? To try

  496. and focus as we come into his presence? And there's

  497. kind of some bigger answers to how we do that,

  498. which we'll get to in a little bit, But something

  499. worth considering is how we should think about how there's

  500. a day where God is going to come in all

  501. his judgment. He's going to come in glory and power.

  502. And I think it's fair if we ask ourselves, are

  503. we living in such a way that is preparing us

  504. to meet God? Do we have the proper boundaries drawn

  505. in our life to keep us from sin, to keep

  506. us living for Him that will keep us ready for

  507. when God shows up, that we're not growing lacks of

  508. days ago, We're not growing tired or sleepy in the

  509. things that the Lord has called us to do. Moses,

  510. at God's command, goes back down to Aarin and while

  511. Moses is with the people, God actually speaks to Moses

  512. and the people. So God speaks while all of them

  513. are there, and He's going to make very clear those

  514. lines that need to be drawn. So we're going to

  515. look at the declaration of God's commands. And this is

  516. actually something really interesting that I learned to my study

  517. this week. Is here when it says and God spoke

  518. all these words, that's what we're going to see. It

  519. says it says, and God spoke all these words. It

  520. doesn't say commands, it doesn't say laws, it doesn't say statutes,

  521. it doesn't say demands. Now they are all those things,

  522. but it says God spoke all of these words. And

  523. how a lot of commentators understand that as God is

  524. going to lay out the foundation by which his people live.

  525. It's kind of like we have a constitution in our

  526. country that sets what it looks like to live in

  527. our country. And God is going to speak these words

  528. and it's going to be their constitution for how these people,

  529. how God's Holy nation ought to live. And these guidelines,

  530. these foundational documents, whatever you want to call them, and

  531. we're their most popularly known as the Ten Commandments. So

  532. we're gonna actually take a look at them. We're not

  533. going to take a deep dive into all of them,

  534. or else we would be here forever. But what we

  535. are going to do actually is, in several months from now,

  536. we're going to do we're going to do a series

  537. on the Ten Commandments. We're going to take at least

  538. a week to cover about each one and get to

  539. go through them. So I'm really excited for that. And

  540. so you can hold hold on for that that will

  541. be coming. But God lays out these these foundational documents

  542. and words for his covenant people to live by. And

  543. now most helpful in summarizing and understanding the commandments is

  544. understanding that they can be summed up in the first

  545. and the second greatest commandment, that is, love God with

  546. every thing and more than everything, and to love your

  547. neighbor as yourself. So as we actually read through that,

  548. which we'll do pretty quickly, you can see that the

  549. first four have to do with love and God and

  550. loving God first, and the last six have to do

  551. with loving your neighbor. Let's look at this Exodus twenty.

  552. Starting in verse one says, and God spoke all these words, saying,

  553. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out

  554. of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

  555. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall

  556. not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness

  557. of anything that is in heaven above, or that is

  558. in the earth beneath, or that is in the water

  559. under the earth. You shall not bow down to them

  560. or serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am

  561. a jealous god visiting the iniquity of the fathers on

  562. the children to the third and fourth generation, for those

  563. who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of

  564. those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall

  565. not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,

  566. for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes

  567. his name in vain. Remember the Sabbath day to keep

  568. it holy. Six days you shall labor, you do all,

  569. and do all your work. But the seventh day is

  570. a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you

  571. shall do or not do any work, you or your

  572. son or your daughter, your male servant or your female servant,

  573. or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.

  574. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and

  575. the earth, the sea, and all that is in them,

  576. and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed

  577. the Sabbath day and made it holy. Honor your father

  578. and your mother, that your days may be long in

  579. the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

  580. You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, You

  581. shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness against

  582. your neighbor, you shall not covet your neighbor's house. You

  583. shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant,

  584. or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey,

  585. or anything that is your neighbor's. Now here's the deal.

  586. I should have screamed all of that at you. The

  587. only reason I should have screamed that out all of

  588. you is because that's what the people were hearing. They

  589. were hearing that in their own language in thunder. That

  590. that is how that was being spoken to all of

  591. the people before them. God lays out plainly what it

  592. looks like to love him, that is, serve him and

  593. worship him alone, don't take his name in vain, keep

  594. his sabbath holy, follow his example. He also lays out

  595. his expectations for how his covenant people are to interact

  596. with others. This is God's law in its purest form.

  597. We're gonna be looking at some other laws coming next week.

  598. It's gonna be a great time. But a lot of

  599. those laws can find their core, or you can kind

  600. of trace them to one of these core tenets of

  601. loving your neighbor. But there is a problem, as we

  602. read through these, doesn't just tell me how I ought

  603. to live, but it reveals that I, in fact don't

  604. live how I ought. I don't love God perfectly, and

  605. I don't love my neighbor perfectly. We know that Jesus

  606. drives many of these deeper saying, if you even look

  607. at a woman with lust, you've committed adultery in your heart.

  608. If you're angry, angry with your brother, you're committing murder

  609. in your heart. If anyone hates their brother, they're a

  610. murderer in their heart. These guidelines, which are amazing laws

  611. for life, show me just how far I fall from

  612. the holiness that God requires of his people. So you're

  613. driving on the freeway and you realize you're going twenty

  614. over and you have been for a long time. And

  615. it's at this that I believe that not only as

  616. a result of the crushing revelation of their sin, but

  617. also because of just the terror flying sound, the terrifying

  618. sight that is before them, that the people come to

  619. Moses with a request, and I need the bandic companies.

  620. We're gonna look at the mediation and God's care for us.

  621. Look at his verse eighteen. Now, when all the people

  622. saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the

  623. sound of the trumpet, and the mountains smoking. The people

  624. were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off and

  625. said to Moses, you speak to us, and we will listen,

  626. But do not let God speak to us lest we die.

  627. They come to Moses terrified and asked Moses to act

  628. as their mediator between God and them, because they couldn't

  629. bear to live under the voice of God without any

  630. means of separation. It was just too much. They needed

  631. someone to go between, someone to stand in the gap

  632. for them. But before Moses goes back into God's presence,

  633. he tells the people something crucial here. Everything that had

  634. happened was very intentional on God's part. God had invited

  635. them to covenant with him. God had revealed his holiness

  636. and glorious commands to them. But this had resulted in

  637. fear in the people. Not an irrational fear, but a

  638. very reasonable one, a holy, wise and good fear, a

  639. fear that wasn't gonna make them run from God, but

  640. will make them run from sin. Look at this Exodus

  641. twenty twenty. It says Moses said to the people, it's

  642. actually a very interesting lyne here says, do not fear,

  643. for God has come to test you. He says, do

  644. not what fear. He says, do not fear for God

  645. has come to test to you, that the fear of

  646. Him may be before you, that you may not what sin.

  647. Do not fear for God has come to te ask

  648. to you, that the fear of Him may be before you,

  649. that you may not sin. And this is where we're

  650. gonna camp, because Moses has just said something huge here,

  651. something that has echoed many times throughout the rest of

  652. God's word, and that is the relationship to the fear

  653. of God and our sin. Like I stated earlier, if

  654. we don't fear God as we should, then we won't

  655. love God as we ought. God has called these people

  656. to obey his voice, then revealed his holiness to them

  657. and his commands. And his commands were to love him

  658. above all else. And the point of him showing his

  659. presence to the people is that they would fear him

  660. above all else. So we need to love God and

  661. fear God and both go together. If we properly fear God,

  662. then we will properly love God. But none of this

  663. is possible because of our default condition as sinful man.

  664. Our default condition is one of not fearing God and

  665. one of not loving God. And so before we can

  666. even do this, we need someone who can go before us,

  667. someone who can go between, someone who can redeem us

  668. and bring us into the presence of God and enable

  669. us to be as we should use in our own strength,

  670. we do not measure up, and we already fall so

  671. short of what we should be. But that's where the

  672. good news comes in. That just like Moses was appointed

  673. by the people to be a mediator between God and

  674. the people of Israel, there is another man who was

  675. appointed not by man, but by God to be the

  676. perfect mediator and reconciler and voice of God to sinful man.

  677. And that was the Word made flesh, the God man

  678. Jesus Christ. Look at this one Timothy two to five.

  679. For there is one God and there is one mediator

  680. between God and men, the man Christ, Jesus, who gave

  681. himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony

  682. given at the proper time that God took on flesh

  683. to not only be our mediator, but actually came down

  684. to solve our problem of unholiness, our unholiness that was

  685. keeping us from His presence. So once again God is

  686. drawing near to these unholy people to save them. That

  687. by living the perfect life, Jesus fulfilled the law. But

  688. not only did he live the perfect life, but Jesus

  689. also died the death that we deserve for our sin.

  690. That just like God had said that anyone who crossed

  691. the boundary on the mountain shall be put to death,

  692. so every single person who breaks God's commandments, who crosses

  693. the boundary of God's commands, they also deserve to be

  694. put to death. But God, being rich in mercy, sent

  695. Jesus to do what we couldn't by perfectly obeying the

  696. law and by dying in our place for our transgression

  697. of His law, but then finally raising on the third day,

  698. showing that he was God's chosen mediator to be the

  699. only way for sinful man to be reconciled to the

  700. presence of a holy God. That the only way we

  701. can come into God's presence confidently is through Jesus. Is

  702. in Jesus. That everyone who is in Christ, they can

  703. now draw near to God, because when God looks at us,

  704. he doesn't see our unholiness, but he sees us covered

  705. in the obedience and righteousness of Christ and for those

  706. who in Christ. There is now no condemnation for those

  707. who are in Christ that instead of being like Adam,

  708. who when he sinned and heard God's presence showing up

  709. random hid that we can confidently draw near. But then

  710. and only then, after we've put our faith in Jesus,

  711. can we even begin to fear and love God as

  712. we ought. And I want to explain what I mean

  713. by this. All over scripture we are told to fear God,

  714. and even starting with our text here in Exodus, we

  715. are told why, and that's that God actually cares for us.

  716. He cares for us so much that we have this

  717. funny sentence where Moses can say, hey, don't fear God

  718. just wanted you to fear him. But the where the

  719. care is in that is because the end of us

  720. fearing him results in us not sinning, which is which

  721. results in keeping us in his presence and able to

  722. be with him. It's our sin that separates us. He

  723. doesn't want us to sin, so he gives us fear

  724. of him. He gives us this healthy fear of him,

  725. just like when we approach train tracks, just like when

  726. we approach the edge of the Grand canyon. We can

  727. still draw near, but we are intentional on how we

  728. do so, and we're not flippant about our life. That

  729. we live before God. That is, by the fear of

  730. God that we are kept from sin in the first place.

  731. And all throughout Scripture we see this relationship between fearing

  732. God and keeping his commandments. Look at this Proverb six

  733. sixteen six. It says, by steadfast love and faithfulness, iniquity

  734. is atoned for. And look at this is amazing. You

  735. put this verse in your back pocket. And by the

  736. fear of the Lord, one turns away from evil Proverbs

  737. fourteen twenty seven. The fear of the Lord is a

  738. fountain of life, that one may turn away from the

  739. snares of death. Ecclesia Ecclesiastes twelve thirteen says, the end

  740. of the matter all has been heard. Fear God and

  741. keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

  742. Tewod Corinthians seventy to one. Since we have these promises, beloved,

  743. let us clean ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit.

  744. Listen to this bringing holiness to completion. In what the

  745. fear of God? And what is the fear of God,

  746. what is it exactly? Well, Scripture even just tells us,

  747. I love these parts in scripture. When scripture just says

  748. this is what it is, look at this. Proverbs eight thirteen.

  749. The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. To

  750. love our most holy God, we need to hate what

  751. is evil. Fearing the Lord is hating evil. It's by

  752. fearing the Lord that we turn from evil because we

  753. hate evil. That if we fear God, we fear of

  754. being a part of anything that God himself hates. Instead

  755. of playing with sin, instead of being flippant or indifferent

  756. to our sin in our life. It's something that just

  757. like God hates, we hate also. And it honestly just

  758. makes sense, Like this is so practical. This is actually

  759. a practical thing. It makes if we hate sin, if

  760. we hate evil, if we hate wickedness, how much easier

  761. to turn away from it. Let me give you an example.

  762. I hate mushrooms, and that might seem ridiculous. You have

  763. to convince me to try and eat mushrooms. I will

  764. quickly move the other way. When it comes to mushrooms.

  765. You don't have to try and keep me away from them.

  766. I don't like them. My body doesn't like them. Nothing

  767. about them is great, and I'm sorry if you do.

  768. That's okay. But here's the deal. It's an illustration. You

  769. don't have to convince me to stay away from mushrooms.

  770. And if we feared the Lord as we should, it

  771. should not be hard to keep away from sin. Do

  772. we hate our sin enough that we don't want anything

  773. to do with it any longer? Do we hate our sin?

  774. And how much it ruins and affects our life, how

  775. it leads to death, how it keeps us from God?

  776. How about because it offends God? How we store up

  777. wrath and judgment because of it, which will either be

  778. poured out on us on judgment day, or if we

  779. put our faith in Jesus, Jesus absorbs and takes that

  780. punishment for us. If we took God more seriously, we

  781. would take our sin more seriously. And that's why God

  782. reveals himself in such a way He wants the people

  783. to take him seriously. Our sin keeps us from keeping

  784. God's commands, among those being what loving him, putting him first,

  785. serving him only. And it's interesting because you might be asking, yes,

  786. we should fear God, but what about the love part

  787. you've brought up love, and doesn't love get rid of fear?

  788. And I'm glad that you ask. We're gonna address the

  789. first thing. Like I said earlier, if we don't fear

  790. God as we should, then we don't or we won't

  791. love God as we ought. That's because if we don't

  792. fear God, we will sin. And if we are sinning,

  793. we're not keeping his commandments He's called us to. You

  794. might say, but Jesus was all about love, not all

  795. this commandment stuff. There's a lot of commandment talk. This

  796. is why I stay away from the Old Testament. But

  797. the God of the Old Testament is the God of

  798. the New Testament. It's the same God, it's the same voice.

  799. And it's actually a perfect example of how we favor

  800. one of God's characteristics in favor of another. We don't

  801. have the right to pick the parts we like about

  802. God and reject the ones that sit funny with us.

  803. We take all of God or we take none of him.

  804. God is the judge we are not. And yes, Jesus

  805. talked about love, but actually, look how Jesus puts all

  806. of it together. John fourteen fifteen. He says, if you

  807. love me, you will keep my commandments. Keeping God's commandments

  808. is loving God. Loving God is keeping his commandments, and

  809. we do so by a healthy fear in love for

  810. our great God and Savior. Now again, it's not the

  811. fear of judgment, because if you've put your faith in Jesus,

  812. there is no more reason to fear, because Jesus is

  813. taken care of it. But it is a healthy reverence

  814. and fear of God that we can't afford to lose.

  815. Because he says it's the remedy to sinning, it's the

  816. remedy to actually help us stay away from to turn

  817. away from our sin. The Holy God loves and wants

  818. his covenant people to be holy like he is, and

  819. so he supplies them with the fear of Him to

  820. keep them from sinning. And our response of fear and

  821. love to God is to keep his commandments. Is to

  822. live before him, is his special possession, not trying to

  823. earn right, standing before him, because we already see we

  824. can't do that. We need Jesus to bring us into

  825. his presence. We need Jesus to cover our sins. We

  826. need Jesus to help us be obedy. But it's living

  827. in light of the grace and out of love and

  828. reverence and respect for our great, powerful, mighty and Holy God.

  829. So my prayer is that the proper of fear of

  830. the Lord would take root in our hearts, because as

  831. God's holy nation, God's special possession, if we don't fear

  832. God as we should, then we won't love God as

  833. we ought. Amen. Would you guys please stand to your feet.
