  1. We've been in a series called what is Man? God's

  2. design for mankind? What is Man? God's design for mankind?

  3. And when we see all that God has created, can't

  4. help but stand in awe. Kind of blows our minds

  5. a little bit sometimes when you stop and look at

  6. all of creation. But it also pushes us to this question.

  7. With all these incredible things that God has created, what

  8. is man? What even is man in comparison to all

  9. the massive and mind blowing things that God has created?

  10. Why would man matter at all? Why should God care

  11. about lil ol Us? Why? And Psalm eight has been

  12. our anchor text for this series. I want you to

  13. listen to this. Psalmate says, Oh Lord, our Lord, how

  14. majessic is your name? And all the earth You've set

  15. your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of

  16. babies and infants. You have established strength because of your foes,

  17. to still the enemy and the avenger. When I look

  18. at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon

  19. and the stars which you have set in place, What

  20. is man that you are mindful of him? And the

  21. son of Man that you care for him? Yet you

  22. have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings,

  23. and crowned him with glory and honor. You've given him

  24. dominion over the works of your hands. You have put

  25. all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and

  26. also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens,

  27. and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the

  28. paths of the seas. Oh Lord, Our Lord, how majestic

  29. is your name in all the earth. We are so

  30. small and seemingly insignificant in comparison to all of creation

  31. when you look around. Yet God is mindful of us.

  32. God does care for us. He cares so much that

  33. He has a design and a plan for us too.

  34. God holds the blueprints, I say, the blueprints for what

  35. humanity is and what humanity is for. And so that's

  36. what we're talking about in this series. What is God's

  37. design for us when it comes to mankind? What is

  38. God's design for mankind? I want everyone to say, the

  39. author of life has the best plan how life should

  40. be lived. I want you to remember that that the

  41. author of life has the best plan how life should

  42. be lived. And I have a question for everyone here.

  43. Wants a bad marriage, even if you're not married yet

  44. think about the future. Who here wants a bad marriage? Anyone?

  45. Just checking making sure nobody wants a bad marriage. No

  46. one would want a bad marriage. And a bad marriage

  47. is actually really easy to accomplish. You just do whatever

  48. you want. You don't have to try to have a

  49. bad marriage. You just take your hands off the steering

  50. wheel and just see what happens. That's how you have

  51. a bad marriage. But who here wants a good marriage?

  52. Come on, now, a good marriage? Of course, we all

  53. want a good marriage. So if you want a good marriage,

  54. just go to a grocery store, stop by the magazine

  55. rack and pick up the thing that says ten tips

  56. to having a good marriage, or open up a blog

  57. post that says how to please you're a woman or

  58. your man. There's so many tips out there for how

  59. to have a good marriage. But I want to take

  60. it a step further. That was kind of a trick question,

  61. you guys, because I want to take it a step further.

  62. Who wants the best marriage? Now? That's what we're actually after.

  63. Now we're talking we want the best marriage possible. That's

  64. what we're all looking for. And what I want to

  65. argue today is that the best marriages are designed by God.

  66. The best marriages are designed by God because he literally

  67. wrote the book on marriage. He has a plan and

  68. design for marriage and what it's supposed to look like

  69. as the one who created mankind and the one who

  70. invented marriage, because that's not something humans came up with.

  71. We didn't come up with marriage. God came up with marriage.

  72. And since God invented marriage, he has the best plan

  73. on how it should be done because the best marriages

  74. are only found in walking according to God's design for marriage.

  75. And the best part about it all, I think this

  76. is the best part is He didn't leave us in

  77. the dark. He actually told us how. He didn't just

  78. tell us, He showed us how. He wrote the book

  79. on marriage. And today I want to take a look

  80. and see what this book says about marriage. And we're

  81. going to look at three different places in scripture that

  82. should help us see three very I think these are

  83. very important truths for us today. And if you're not

  84. married today, don't tune me out, because this is stuff's

  85. going to be very helpful for you to know for

  86. the future. It will save you so much heartache and

  87. pain knowing this information before we get married, because statistically speaking,

  88. everyone gets married at some point. So the three truths

  89. about marriage that I want to see in scripture today

  90. that I think are going to be very clear is

  91. that marriage is purposefully designed, it is particularly defined, and

  92. it's practically applied. And look at that. I made them

  93. all start with a P and they almost all rhymed.

  94. That was pretty cool. Thanks. Marriage is purposefully designed, particularly defined,

  95. and practically applied. So grab your bibles, please, and turn

  96. to the Book of Genesis, the first book in the Bible.

  97. And if you need a bible, Gabe has them in

  98. the back there. Just wave at them. He'll run it

  99. over to you. And that's our gift to you, want

  100. you to keep it. But in the first text that

  101. we're looking at is Genesis chapter two, and we're going

  102. to be reading verses eighteen through twenty five. And here

  103. it's where we're going to see that God has a

  104. purpose for why he created marriage. The marriage was designed

  105. for a reason. But before we get into that, I

  106. want to pray. So let's pray God, we thank you

  107. for this moment we think of. This moment is like

  108. no other. We will never have a moment like this again.

  109. And so God, we just tune in to you to

  110. hear what you have to say to us today about

  111. your design for marriage. And even if we are sitting

  112. in here today not married, that we still keep this

  113. information close to us, close to our hearts, so that

  114. we can set our eyes toward a marriage in the

  115. future that is glorifying to you and according to your

  116. design and plan, because you design the best marriages. So God,

  117. we thank you for your word. We pray that it

  118. does work in us today as we go through it.

  119. Jesus name, everybody said a men, all right. Genesis chapter two.

  120. This is verses eighteen through twenty five. God had just

  121. finished making Adam. He created Adam, and he places him

  122. in the garden to work and to keep it. And

  123. then God almost immediately points out a problem. He just

  124. finished saying I'd created this and it's good. Created this

  125. and it's good. A created man, it's very good. But

  126. now he's going to point out a problem. Everyone say,

  127. marriage is purposefully designed. Then the Lord God said, it

  128. is not good that man should be alone. I will

  129. make him a helper fit for him. It's not good

  130. the man should be alone. So God points out the

  131. problem right here that he's trying to solve. In the

  132. beginning of this verse, it's not good that man is alone.

  133. The solution that God has for fixing this problem is

  134. to make a helper that's fit for him. So the

  135. whole reason that God decides to make a helper fit

  136. for Adam is because man needs help doing the job

  137. that God gave him. Verse nineteen. Now out of the ground,

  138. the Lord God had formed every beast of the field

  139. and every bird of the heavens, and brought them to

  140. the man to see what he would call them. So

  141. he gets to name all the animals, and whatever the

  142. man called every living creature, that was its name. The

  143. man gave names to all livestock, and to the birds

  144. of the heavens, and to every beast in the field.

  145. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit

  146. for him. So the problem hasn't been solved yet a

  147. helper fit, and that word fit means suitable or adequate,

  148. So an adequate helper for Adam hasn't been found yet.

  149. None of the animals did the trick. And if you

  150. were watching this story unfold and hadn't read ahead and

  151. didn't know where this is going, you'd be like what's

  152. God gonna do. That's how you should that's what you

  153. should feel. In the midst of this narrative, there's the

  154. problem still there. He went through everything else in all

  155. of creation, everything else that God had created, wasn't a

  156. good enough fit, wasn't a fit helper for him. So

  157. what's God gonna do? Well, let's keep reading verse twenty one.

  158. So the Lord God cause a deep sleep to fall

  159. upon the man, And while he slept, took one of

  160. his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And

  161. the rib that the Lord God had taken from the

  162. man he made into a woman and brought her to

  163. the man. Then the man said, this at last is

  164. bone of my bone, bones, and flesh of my flesh.

  165. She shall be called woman because she was taken out

  166. of man. Therefore, a man shall leave his father and

  167. his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they

  168. shall become one flesh. And the man and his what

  169. his wife were both naked, and we're not ashamed. So

  170. the problem that Adam had was that he needed help

  171. to do the work that God gave him to do.

  172. And God's solution to the problem marriage, which just funny

  173. because a lot of times I think like marriage doesn't

  174. solve a lot, it gives me a lot more problems.

  175. It's because we do it wrong. Sometimes. God's solution to

  176. the problem of Adam being alone and needing a helper

  177. was marriage. God created woman from man, created the helper

  178. that's fit for him. The two enter into a one

  179. flesh union, and now Adam has the helper to help

  180. him get the job done. So it's in this moment

  181. that God creates marriage. This is where he creates it,

  182. and his purposeful reason for creating marriage is for man

  183. not to be alone and to have a helper. And

  184. I think this is going to be really important for

  185. us to remember today. We got to remember this very crucial,

  186. crucial point. So if we forget the reason and purpose

  187. for why God created marriage, if we forget this while

  188. we're going through this, it's going to make it very,

  189. very difficult to understand why He defines marriage the way

  190. he defines it. Not just understanding the definition, it's going

  191. to be even more difficult for us to accept the

  192. roles and responsibility he's given husbands and wives in marriage

  193. if we forget why He created marriage. So it's very

  194. important for us to remember this. So lock it in

  195. your mind, keep it in there as we move forward.

  196. God created a marriage so that man isn't alone and

  197. has a partner to help him do the job that

  198. God gave him to do. Marriage was purposefully designed. There's

  199. reason and purpose behind it. And next up, the second

  200. important truth about marriage is marriage is particularly defined. It's

  201. very particular. Once you had turned with me to Matthew

  202. chapter nineteen, and here we're going to see the Pharisees

  203. doing what kind of pharisees do. All the time, they're

  204. questioning Jesus, they're testing him, they're trying to trap Jesus

  205. in his words. And it's in the midst of this

  206. exchange that Jesus actually gives us the definition of marriage.

  207. So I want to look at verses three through nine.

  208. And the Pharisees came up to him and tested him

  209. by asking is it lawful to divorce one's wife for

  210. any cause? Jesus answered, have you not read? Now that

  211. have you not read? Saying it to this group of

  212. people is a slap in the face, because these people,

  213. these pharisees, these lawyers, these experts in the law, are

  214. the most read when it comes to the scriptures. Have

  215. you not read that he who created them from the

  216. beginning made them male and female, and said, therefore a

  217. man shall leave his father and his mother and hold

  218. fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

  219. Jesus is quoting Genesis too. We just read it. Jesus

  220. is quoting Genesis to here. So they are no longer too,

  221. but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let

  222. not man separate. So right here Jesus gives us the

  223. definition of what marriage is, and he's very particular in

  224. what he said. Marriage is one man and one woman

  225. in a one flesh union for life. One man one

  226. woman in one flesh union for life. What God has

  227. joined together, let not man separate. But of course the

  228. Pharisees have to push back, because that's just what they do.

  229. They're trying to push back on what Jesus said. But

  230. then what does Jesus do. We actually doubles down and

  231. shows them that his intentions for marriage is the way

  232. it was when marriage was created. Look at verse seven here,

  233. and they said to him, why then did Moses command

  234. one to give a certificate of divorce and to send

  235. her away? This is great, he said to them, because

  236. of your hardness of heart. Because you are so stubborn

  237. and hard hearted, Moses allowed you to divorce your wives.

  238. But from the beginning, what does it say? It was

  239. not so divorce is not what God intended for marriage.

  240. That's not what God intended when he created marriage. And

  241. I say to you, whoever divorces his wife except for

  242. sexual immorality and marries another commits adultery. So Jesus continues

  243. to just drive this point home. He's getting too a

  244. big point. His intention for marriage is to be a lifelong,

  245. one flesh union between one man and one woman, and

  246. there is a very short list of things that break

  247. that lifelong covenant. The only acceptable biblical reasons we see

  248. for divorce, or the only things that we see God

  249. define as an acceptable reason that a marriage covenant, the

  250. lifelong marriage covenant is dissolved, is sexual immorality, most clearly

  251. seen in adultery. So we just read that that's the

  252. first one. Second one is a non believer abandoning a

  253. believing spouse. We see that in one Corinthians seven point fifteen.

  254. And the third reason is death first Corinthians seven thirty nine.

  255. But outside of those reasons, God sees those two individuals

  256. are still in this lifelong one flesh union covenant of marriage.

  257. God still sees those people as married. God has particularly

  258. defined what marriage is. It's very specific about it. One man,

  259. one woman in a lifelong one flesh union. So that

  260. means if that's how God defines marriage, that everything outside

  261. of that isn't a marriage. It's not a marriage. That's

  262. a second important truth. The third important truth about marriage

  263. is that marriage is practically applied. And this is where

  264. we will probably spend most of our time here, is

  265. that it's practically applied. God has a design for how

  266. marriage is to be lived out. He's given husbands and

  267. wives specific roles within marriage, and they all flow out

  268. of that very first point that we talked about today.

  269. They flow from God's purpose for why he created marriage.

  270. We need to remember that God created marriage, so man

  271. wasn't alone, and so he has help to do what

  272. God to do, the job that God gave him to do.

  273. And so what we're gonna do now is I want

  274. you to turn to Ephesians chapter five, because we're going

  275. to look at Ephesians five. It's very helpful to see

  276. how we're supposed to go about this, how we supposed

  277. to go about our roles in marriage. And while you're

  278. turning there, I also want to remind us that understanding

  279. is often found in obedience. I'm gonna say that again.

  280. Understanding is often found in obedience. Sometimes we don't understand

  281. why God would have us do something until we just

  282. do it. And it's when we finally submit to Him

  283. and walk in obedience to what he commands. Sometimes that's

  284. when thing the light bulb goes off or on turns on.

  285. You're like, that totally makes sense, Thank you God. Now

  286. I get why you told me to do that. So

  287. sometimes we don't understand that until we actually walk it out.

  288. All right, we Inphesians five, let's start in verse twenty

  289. two with a word to the wives. Wives, submit to

  290. your own husbands as to the Lord. For the husband

  291. is the head of the wife. Even as Christ is

  292. head of the church, his body, and is himself its savior.

  293. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives

  294. should submit in everything to their husbands. All right, Wives,

  295. be honest. He stoke to hear this. Most wives or

  296. women in general are not super happy to hear this, Like, really, God,

  297. is that the thing that's the thing you want to ask,

  298. that's what you would expect of me. But the truth is,

  299. this is what wives you are going to answer to

  300. the Lord for when you go see him face to face,

  301. he's going to say, how did you do it? Submitting

  302. to your husband? But he's an idiot. First off, don't slander,

  303. don't talk bad about your husband. And secondly, that's the

  304. idiot you chose to marry thereby choosing to submit yourself

  305. to his authority. And all the idiots said, I'm not

  306. calling you it. It's yeah, but that is not just

  307. any kind of submission that we're called to here. If

  308. you read this verse, what does it say? It says,

  309. as to the Lord that raises the bar a little bit.

  310. And the example that we're given here is how we

  311. as the church submit to Christ. So I'm telling you

  312. that you need to have your submission to Jesus in

  313. view when you consider your submission to your That's what

  314. you need to have in view, because if you don't

  315. have it in view, then submitting to your husband will

  316. always be difficult. There's a way to understand the text

  317. that's in Genesis three that talks about the fall of

  318. mankind and when God says to Eve, your desire will

  319. be for your husband. Okay, that sounds sweet at first,

  320. You're like, oh, you're going to desire your husband. But

  321. what does he say right after that your desire will

  322. be for your husband, but he will rule over you. Well,

  323. why would those two things be pitted next to each other.

  324. It's because this desire is not a desire for your husband.

  325. It's the same way the desire of sin desires to

  326. have rulership over you. So there is this strife that

  327. is born out of our sinful flesh. You're not gonna

  328. want to submit. You're not going to want to You're

  329. going to want to rule over your husband. So we

  330. have to keep in mind or you, ladies, I'm not

  331. a wife, I'm a husband. You wives need to keep

  332. keep in mind your submission to Christ for this to

  333. be any easier. Understand your submission to Christ when you

  334. consider your submission to your husband, because verse twenty four

  335. is it still up there. So also, wives should submit

  336. what somebody's saying. Someone be brave and say loud. The

  337. husband says aloud in everything I didn't write that God did.

  338. That's a lot everything. So also wives should submit in

  339. everything to their husbands. At times, your flesh is going

  340. to be screaming so loud. How could I ever? You're

  341. gonna come up with every reason why you shouldn't have

  342. to submit to your husband, or why you don't think

  343. it's reasonable too, or that you don't have to. But

  344. this is where I think you got to ask yourself

  345. a really important question. Do I trust God's way for

  346. my marriage or my own? Do I trust God's way

  347. for my marriage? Or do I trust my own way?

  348. Who designs the best marriages? God does. The best marriages

  349. are designed by God. The best marriages follow his plans.

  350. And if you're sitting here thinking yourself, how do I

  351. even begin to do that? Or like, where do I

  352. even start? I like things to be simple, so I

  353. say start simple. Just ask your husband what do you

  354. think we should do? And then get this, just do it?

  355. Just do it. And if he's not used to being

  356. the one to make decisions or comes back with a

  357. I don't care side, note husband's We're going to get

  358. to you in a second. You need to care. We

  359. as husbands need to care. We need to step up,

  360. we need to not be passive. We need to make decisions.

  361. But why if your husband say he doesn't care, then

  362. give him some options, because you and I both know

  363. you've thought through a lot of them. Every wife's got

  364. all kinds of solutions, So offer some and say which

  365. one do you think we should go with. Be the

  366. helper that God made you to be for your husband,

  367. support him in his job as head of your family.

  368. God calls the man to lead and made women because

  369. he needed help doing it. So help him, but do

  370. it in submission to him as the one God put

  371. over you. And I do feel like this is I

  372. need to have this like side note here. I wrote

  373. it in my notes. When is the only time you

  374. disobey an authority that the Lord has put over you?

  375. Whether it is right in the side of God to

  376. listen to you man rather than God, you must judge,

  377. and we must obey God rather than men. That's Acts

  378. fourteen and fifteen. We always obey the highest authority, and

  379. the highest authority is God. And the only time we

  380. disobey an authority that the Lord has placed over us.

  381. This goes for men and women, is if they command

  382. you to do something that God forbids or forbids you

  383. from doing something God commands. Because we always submit to

  384. the highest authority, which is God. So in short, wives,

  385. if it isn't sinful to do so, submit to and

  386. obey your husband. That's what God's saying here. So this

  387. text and Ephesians continues in verse twenty five, and husband's surturn.

  388. So wise you can take a deep breath. Husbands, love

  389. your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave himself

  390. up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed

  391. her by the washing of water with the word, so

  392. that he might present the Church to himself in splendor,

  393. without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she

  394. might be holy and without blemish. In the same way,

  395. husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He

  396. who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever

  397. hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just

  398. as Christ does the Church, because we are members of

  399. his body. Therefore, man shall leave his father and mother

  400. and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall

  401. become one flesh. Again. That's Genesis two. This mystery is profound,

  402. and I'm saying that it refers to Christ and the Church. However,

  403. with that in mind, let each of you love his

  404. wife as himself and let the wife see that she

  405. respects her husband. Marriage is meant to reflect the relationship

  406. that Jesus has with the Church. That's the relationship or

  407. the illustration that God uses throughout the whole Bible to

  408. talk about his relationship with his people is marriage. And

  409. when we look at a marriage the way God intended,

  410. that's what we should see. Jesus really relationship with the church,

  411. Christ and the Church. So this is a very tall

  412. order for us husbands. It's a tall order. We are

  413. to love our wives, but we don't get infined what

  414. that love looks like. God gets to define that and

  415. how does he define it. If you want to see

  416. the proper way that you are to love your wife,

  417. you look at how Jesus loved the church. Jesus is

  418. the model husband. It's perfect. Jesus is the example of

  419. a perfect husband. He sets the high bar standard of

  420. love that a husband should have for his wife. Jesus

  421. gave up everything for his bride. He gave it all up,

  422. He laid down his very life, and he did it

  423. to what this text has to sanctify her, to set

  424. her apart, to cleanse her with the word to present

  425. her in splendor that means no spots, no wrinkles, no blemishes,

  426. to nourish her or feed her, to cherish her as

  427. something precious, to make her holy. Jesus laid down his

  428. life to save his bride from her sin. He gave

  429. up everything so that we his church, his bride, can

  430. be forgiven and receive eternal life. And this is the

  431. free gift of salvation offered to all who repent and

  432. believe in him, All who believe that Jesus, the eternal

  433. Son of God became a man, lived a perfect life,

  434. died on the cross for our sins, and rose from

  435. the grave. Everyone who confesses that Jesus's Lord will be saved,

  436. not might be saved. God will think about saving them. No,

  437. everyone who confesses that Jesus's Lord will be saved to

  438. guarantee it's a promise. This is what Jesus the perfect

  439. husband did for his bride. Now, husband's I'm looking at us.

  440. This is our model to follow. This is the bar

  441. that is set for us. How are we doing? How

  442. are we doing now? We aren't going to be dying

  443. for the sins of our spouse. There's only one person

  444. who can do that's Jesus and he did it. But

  445. is our greatest concern? Her holiness? Is that our greatest concern?

  446. And take a pause here, it's not in my notes.

  447. Our greatest concern can't be keeping her happy? Because what

  448. does your flesh want? Everything contrary to God? What is

  449. the world promise? Everything that leads to death? Our goal,

  450. our greatest concern for our spouse, our wife, cannot be

  451. her happiness. It has to be her holiness. And we

  452. are happiest when we're holy in falling the Lord. So

  453. there's just a cherry on top right there. For that.

  454. Jesus laid down his life to make his church holy,

  455. and we are told to love our wives just like

  456. that is our greatest concern. How can I shepherd my

  457. wife to look more like Jesus? How can I model

  458. who Jesus is to my wife? Am I going to

  459. submit to the Lord and sacrifice of my own wants,

  460. my own desires? To love my wife like Christ love

  461. the Church and fellas. This is not easy in the

  462. same way it's not easy for wives to submit. But

  463. this is the blueprint that God has given us for marriage.

  464. This is the design that God has for what it

  465. means for us to be husbands. The best marriages are

  466. designed by God. But just as I asked the wives

  467. a moment ago, do I trust God enough to submit

  468. to him and do it his way? Or am I

  469. going to continue to try it my way? Do I

  470. take matters into my own hands and try to force

  471. it to work? Or am I going to step up

  472. and be the head of the household like God commands?

  473. Or am I going to sit back and be passive

  474. and just let my wife take care of everything because

  475. I know she will. Am I going to shepherd my

  476. family through God's word? Or am I going to let

  477. the church do that? For the record, Adam passively sat

  478. by and watched as Eve ate the forbidden fruit, which

  479. led to the fracturing of everything. So look at what

  480. passivity gets us. God designed marriage to thrive when the

  481. husband leads and the wife follows or is the helper.

  482. And when that gets out of order, marriage is way harder.

  483. Marriage is already going to have its own struggles and

  484. strifes and conflict, But how much harder is it when

  485. we get things out of order? I say, It's like

  486. trying to stand up straight with a crooked spine. You

  487. just can't do it. The author of life has the

  488. best design on how it should be lived, and God

  489. is the author of marriage, so his design is the

  490. only way that it was meant to work. And I

  491. have one other honorable mention when it comes to the

  492. roles that God has for husbands and wives. So let's

  493. turn to One Peter chapter three, and we'll read the

  494. first seven verses. Some of this will sound familiar, almost

  495. like we need to hear the same thing more than

  496. once to remember it. Verse one. Likewise, wives, be subject

  497. to your own husbands, so that even if some do

  498. not obey the word, they may be one without a

  499. word by the conduct of their wives when they see

  500. your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning

  501. be external, the braiding of hair and the putting on

  502. of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear. But let

  503. your adorning be the hidden person of the heart, with

  504. the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which

  505. in God's sight it's very precious. For this is how

  506. the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn

  507. themselves by submitting to their own husbands. As Sarah obeyed Abraham,

  508. calling him Lord Calm, down fellas, and you are her

  509. children if you do good and do not fear anything

  510. that is frightening. So wives, let's kind of put all

  511. this together here. Wives, be subject to your own husbands.

  512. That just means submit to him. Be respectful that it's

  513. to show reverence. Have pure conduct, it's genuine, honest, without fault.

  514. Adorn yourself with a gentle and quiet spirit. How to

  515. you explain that? It's sometimes easiest to explain by talking

  516. about what it's not. What's the opposite of gentle and quiet.

  517. It's harsh and rough and loud. And these are the

  518. same kinds of things that the older women are told

  519. to teach the younger women in Titus. Stay in first, Peter,

  520. but I'll have the Titus text on screen. Titus Chapter two,

  521. starting in verse three. Older women likewise would be to

  522. be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, or reverent like you

  523. can't talk bad about it because it's such good behavior.

  524. Not slanders. You don't go around talking bad about everyone,

  525. or slaves to much wine. You're not a drunkard. They are.

  526. They are to teach what is good, and so train

  527. the young women to do what to love their husbands

  528. and their children. That's to be affectionate with their husbands

  529. and to be fond of their children. That's what those

  530. words mean. What else? To be self controlled takes a

  531. lot of self controlled out of a gentle and quiet

  532. spirit about you. Train them to be pure again, that

  533. means to be without fault. Train them to be working

  534. at home. That means being domestically inclined the one who

  535. cares for the house. So, no matter what else a

  536. wife might be doing, are they taking care of the

  537. household affairs. As God is holding men accountable for protecting, providing,

  538. and shepherding his family, God holds women accountable for caring

  539. for the household affairs. Teach them to be kind, that's

  540. upright and honorable. That's especially pertaining to those you serve under,

  541. and submissive to their own husbands. Not someone else's husband,

  542. not some other man, but submissive to your own husband.

  543. Why also, that the word of God may not be

  544. reviled again, all these things are not easy. I want

  545. to make sure I help. I just recognize that these

  546. things are not easier. Flesh does not want to do

  547. these things. But this is how the Lord calls you

  548. to be as a wife. This is the role and

  549. responsibility that God gives wives, and this is the design

  550. to follow to have the best marriage. And every single

  551. one of you has said you wanted the best marriage.

  552. Back to our Ephesians five text, Paul moves to husbands

  553. in verse seven, look at this Likewise, husbands, live with

  554. your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the

  555. woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with

  556. you of the grace of life, so that your prayers

  557. may not be hindered. This is hard for us husbands

  558. to live with our wives in an understanding way. Sineces

  559. a little challenging wise, because youve got to stop thinking about

  560. yourself for a second. And this verse should immediately convict

  561. us when we start to act like a tyrant if

  562. we forget the whole lay down your life part of

  563. loving your wife like Christ loved the church. So we

  564. ought to strive to understand our wives. Strive to consider

  565. the perspective of where they're coming from. Strive to consider

  566. how they're going to feel about the decisions that we make,

  567. how it will affect them. Consider our wives live with

  568. them in an understanding way, not to steamroll over them

  569. with our leadership that's easy to say. See, you got

  570. to submit and just steamroll over. That doesn't sound like

  571. the way God told us to do it, does it? No? No, Instead,

  572. what do we do? The text says, we honor her,

  573. we protect her as the weaker vessel precious to be cherished,

  574. and weaker vessel is by no means of less value.

  575. And we see in this text says that she's a

  576. co heir with us, adopted just like we were into

  577. the family of the Lord. It's our job as husbands

  578. to protect, to provide, and to shepherd our wives and

  579. our children. But God demands that we do it in

  580. a certain way, and he gives us a little extra incentive.

  581. When we don't live with our wife in an understanding way,

  582. our prayers are hindered. God doesn't want to hear what

  583. you have to say when he mistreat his daughter. Let

  584. me say that again. God doesn't care what you have

  585. to say if you mistreat his daughter. So we should

  586. live with our wives in an understanding way. Kind of

  587. the worship team come up, please, So I want you

  588. guys to imagine with me. We're gonna go into the

  589. imagination copter. That's a helicopter of imagination. I don't know

  590. why I say some of the things I say, I

  591. just say. Imagine with me a husband loving his wife

  592. with the sacrificial love that Jesus modeled, keeping his eyes

  593. fixed on Jesus as he shepherds his family towards Christ's

  594. likeness through family prayer, Bible reading, and teaching. Not a

  595. passive man of indecision, but a man who stands up

  596. makes decisions for the family, decisions that most importantly lead

  597. them in following after Jesus, but also just to make

  598. decisions so the wife doesn't have to leads. A husband

  599. whose desire and drive is to love and lead his

  600. family the way God commands. And also imagine with me

  601. a wife whose aim is to help the husband accomplish

  602. all of what God has demanded of him, who's agreeable

  603. and gentle, encouraging and supportive. When decisions are made, her

  604. first instinct isn't a question or to push back, but

  605. she jumps up to figure out how to get it done.

  606. She manages the household in a way that the husband

  607. never has to worry about the home. A wife whose

  608. desire is to submit to her husband and be his

  609. helper all to the Lord's glory. And now imagine this

  610. husband and this wife are married to each other. That

  611. sounds pretty sweet, doesn't it. This is how God does

  612. it to be. This is the picture that God has

  613. in mind when he speaks about marriage, and this is

  614. the only way we will all get what we want

  615. for our marriage. To have the best marriage possible, we

  616. need to remember the marriage is purposefully designed. There was

  617. a reason that God made it. It wasn't good that

  618. man was alone. He needed a helper. And remember that

  619. marriage is also particularly defined. God is a very specific

  620. way to define what marriage is. One man, one woman

  621. in the lifelong, one flesh union, and the marriage is

  622. practically applied. God's designed for marriage isn't just an idea.

  623. It's not just playing with idealism. It's meant to be

  624. applied and it's meant to be obeyed. And if I

  625. were to boil this all down, make it as simple

  626. as possible, because again I like simple wives are to

  627. submit and help, Husbands are to love and lead. Wives

  628. are to submit and help. Husbands are to love and lead.

  629. This is how God designed it all to work. This

  630. is how he demands that we operate in it. God

  631. wrote the book on marriage because He created marriage. The

  632. best marriages are designed by God. The only question is

  633. will you trust him and do it his way? Will

  634. you trust him and do it his way?
