  1. Welcome to The Roots, where it's all about Jesus. We

  2. love God, we love people. We reach the lost and

  3. we make disciples. Today, on my way down to the office, before,

  4. or where I could go over my notes and stuff,

  5. I saw a sign on a dentist's office that said,

  6. I followed my heart and it led me straight to

  7. the fridge. Which is like such a sign that you

  8. drive by type of sign, right? I did actually think

  9. it was funny though, because reading that sign, I was like, hey,

  10. that's like actually what we're talking about today. That our

  11. heart does in fact lead us somewhere. The question is,

  12. where does it lead? What does the Bible have to

  13. say about that? I'm so glad that you asked me

  14. that question. We've been in a series of for those

  15. who are maybe joining us for the first time, we

  16. have been in a series called What is Man?

  17. God's Design for Mankind.

  18. The reason we've been in this series is we live

  19. in a very interesting time, a day and age where

  20. people don't want to be told who they are or

  21. what they are, but instead we want to be able

  22. to define for ourselves who and what we are. And unfortunately,

  23. we've seen the damage that this has caused wholesale to

  24. our society, the destruction of the household, marriage, the destruction

  25. of the unborn, the destruction of gender and sexuality, the

  26. destruction of our identity as humans and what that even means.

  27. So our hope is in this series is.

  28. To no longer have to search, to no longer have

  29. to make it up with our own ideas, but instead

  30. that we can look to the one who created it all,

  31. the one who has spoken to us from his word

  32. to tell us who we are, why we're here, what

  33. we're for. And we've seen lots of these beautiful truths

  34. over the last several weeks. We've seen that we're made

  35. in God's image. We've looked at what that means. That

  36. we're made to reflect his presence and glory and rule

  37. over all creation. That we were made in specific ways,

  38. specifically in marriage, to be a picture that points to

  39. Christ and his people. And child rearing, that we're spreading

  40. God's image across the earth. That we're made to have

  41. this amazing gift of getting to know and be known

  42. by our maker. But also as we've gone through these things,

  43. every single week we're like, it was really cool. Things

  44. were really good. Wasn't this really awesome in its original design?

  45. But week after week, we've also had to point out

  46. that something has gone terribly wrong in the world. The

  47. reason we have to in the first place even point

  48. out what the original design is and or was is

  49. is because things have gotten so off track. Things are

  50. not how they ought to be. And as we saw

  51. last week, unfortunately, because of us, that the world has

  52. gone so wrong. We looked at last week that our

  53. first parents, Adam and Eve, rebelled against God in the garden,

  54. bringing curses, death, and judgment upon the whole human race.

  55. If you missed last week, it was awesome. It was

  56. a very lively time. But the writer G.K. Chesterton is

  57. said to have once seen a newspaper with a headline

  58. that read, What's wrong with the world? To which Chesterton

  59. sent a little letter back to the editor saying, Dear.

  60. Sir, I am.

  61. So as we looked at last week, it's not that

  62. mankind isn't as good as we think they are. It's

  63. in fact that mankind is much worse than we tend

  64. to think, which I know is just so cheery. We

  65. looked at that when we sing Amazing Grace, how sweet

  66. the sound that saved a wretch like me. We looked

  67. at that that is not us just being dramatic, but

  68. it's someone writing a song about who has truly come

  69. to see the depths, the offensiveness, the fallenness of their nature.

  70. So we looked at why sin is such a serious

  71. problem because of the wrath and judgment that it brings

  72. upon us. And today, we're looking at exactly the depths

  73. to which the Bible speaks about how damaging sin is

  74. has been to our human nature. So we've looked at

  75. all these great ways of like, this is how they're

  76. supposed to be. This is how God initially made mankind

  77. to be. And this was the initial intent. And now

  78. here we are. I'm sure you've met another person before.

  79. Like they're not all that. And so now the problem is,

  80. is that we can still have a cheery nature.

  81. Outlook or view.

  82. And we want to really examine just what does the

  83. Bible have to say.

  84. About how we are now.

  85. That as much as we needed God to tell us

  86. how we were supposed to be and what he initially

  87. made us for, we also need God to give us

  88. the diagnosis for just what is going on. Just how

  89. bad are things for us. Just how off the mark

  90. Are we? All of us, whether it's optimism or maybe

  91. we're just a little naive, generally like to think and

  92. or hope that all of us are basically good.

  93. If you have kids.

  94. Or maybe you work with kids, one of the most

  95. brutal realities is the fact that your infant or toddler

  96. can be such a little sinner from such a young age.

  97. And then you turn around and you're a sinner because

  98. they're sinning and it's just all kinds of a mess.

  99. And honestly, this can come as a shock to us

  100. if we believe that mankind is born basically good. But

  101. we live in a society currently that does everything it

  102. can to punt the blame for our own sin like

  103. we talked about last week. But here's the thing, God

  104. doesn't let us do that. Which is good. It's kind

  105. of like me and my wife like to talk about

  106. all the time. No one likes to be told they're wrong.

  107. That's just a true thing. No one likes to be

  108. told they're wrong. But it is at times a very

  109. necessary thing. And God doesn't let us do that. He

  110. holds up the mirror of his word. He brings in

  111. the standard we're measured by. He gives us the bad

  112. news of our natural state. My prayer is that as

  113. much as we're aiming to let God speak and dictate

  114. how we are to understand who we're meant to be,

  115. that today we would be humbled by God's word, that

  116. we would understand the depths of the verdict that God

  117. has given our natural state.

  118. So here's the deal. It's going to be a lot

  119. of Bible, which all of us should have just cheered for.

  120. We're going to be going through a lot of Bible

  121. because I want to make sure That we are not

  122. accused in any way of finding a verse in the

  123. back corner, on the folded page, and making stuff up.

  124. But what I'm hoping to show.

  125. Today is that as we go through lots and lots

  126. of Bible, that we're just saying, this is just what

  127. the Bible has to say. And I can just kind

  128. of be on the fly on the wall with you,

  129. going like, yeah, let's... That's what it says. So here's

  130. the deal. If you don't have a Bible, you're going

  131. to need one. So raise your hand if you do

  132. not have a Bible. Gabe would love to bring you one.

  133. Because not only are there going to be a lot

  134. of Bible verses on the screen, but I added more

  135. Bible verses to my notes after the slides had already

  136. been made.

  137. So praise God. Buckle up.

  138. We're going to get into it. But for starters, kind

  139. of our starting place. We're going to be hanging out

  140. in Ephesians chapter 2. So if you would turn there

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  141. with me, Ephesians chapter 2. We're going to read this, pray,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  142. and get into all this goodness. I'll give you guys

  143. a second. I need to turn there myself. Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  144. We're going to look at verses 1 through 10. It says,

  145. and you were dead in the trespasses and sins in

  146. which you once walked, following the course of this world,

  147. following the prince of the power of the air, the

  148. spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience,

  149. among whom we all once lived in the passions of

  150. our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and

  151. the mind, and were by nature children of wrath like

  152. the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy,

  153. because of the great love with which he loved us,

  154. even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us

  155. alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved.

  156. And raised us up with him and seated us with

  157. him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that

  158. in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches

  159. of his grace and kindness to us. toward us in

  160. Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith,

  161. and this is not your own doing. It is the

  162. gift of God, not a result of works, so that

  163. no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created

  164. in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand

  165. that we should walk in them.

  166. This is God's word. Let us pray.

  167. Father, You are over everything. You get the final word

  168. and the final authority on all things. And so, Lord God,

  169. I just ask that you would do what only you

  170. can do, and that is a miracle. You give us

  171. eyes to see, ears to hear. You give us the humility, Lord,

  172. to submit ourselves to your word. Even for myself, Lord God,

  173. that you would give me the humility to humbly speak

  174. and speak accurately in accordance with your truth and your words,

  175. Lord Jesus.

  176. We're grateful for.

  177. What you do, and we thank you that you tell

  178. us the truth, and I just ask that you would

  179. fill us with wonder, awe, worship, and gratefulness as we

  180. go through this word together. We give you this time.

  181. We ask that you would do what only you can do.

  182. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  183. Walter White.

  184. It's a fictional character. From a hit series, Breaking Bad.

  185. If you're unfamiliar, or if you are familiar, a little

  186. catch you up. Chemistry teacher gets diagnosed with cancer. So

  187. he gets himself into creating and selling drugs. The entire

  188. series is watching him descend from bad to worse. And

  189. the entire show, you watch him as he has this

  190. descent You watch him try and justify his actions by

  191. telling his family that he's done everything for them. But

  192. after he loses everything, and he's committed countless horrific, terrible acts,

  193. he finally comes clean. The real reason he did it

  194. And he tells his wife that he did it because

  195. he liked it. Made him feel powerful, important, in control.

  196. He justified his actions, or he tried to, but at

  197. the end of the day, it was the evil desires

  198. of his heart that drove him on.

  199. Now this series, while.

  200. Being completely a worldly production, does in fact capture a

  201. fundamental biblical truth about human nature. One that every single

  202. one of us, generally speaking, would prefer not to admit.

  203. We are not good people.

  204. All of us in our own way, it's not a

  205. one for one, but all of us in our own

  206. way are a Walter White. Seeking our own ends, our

  207. own glory, our own desires, all while trying to justify

  208. the way we are or trying to find excuses for it.

  209. But as we saw last week, all mankind is without

  210. an excuse. The judgment and the verdict is in. God

  211. has made it clear that we are all sinners and

  212. And we're all ready to admit that nobody is perfect.

  213. But when the Bible says that nobody's perfect, it's not

  214. saying that we score an eight out of a 10.

  215. Look at this, Romans 3.23. For all have sinned and

  216. fall short of the glory of God. Which is more

  217. like saying we score an eight out of infinity, right?

  218. And honestly, the eight is probably still very generous on

  219. our part to ourselves. That as we looked at last week, Adam,

  220. mankind's first representative, sinned and rebelled by breaking God's command.

  221. And since Adam, from whom we all come, we.

  222. Have inherited his fallen nature.

  223. That as God has promised that Adam would die if

  224. he disobeyed, That Adam not only brought judgment of death

  225. upon us in a physical sense, but that it also

  226. brought us death in a spiritual sense. If we look

  227. down in Ephesians chapter 2, verse 1, it says, Paul

    Ephesians 2:1

  228. here is not being cute or extra in the language

  229. that he's using. That every believer before Christ and every

  230. unbeliever is born spiritually dead in their trespasses and sins.

  231. Which is, we're going to get to exactly what all

  232. that entails in just a couple minutes. But first, look

  233. at what Paul says in Romans about the effect that

  234. Adam's sin had on all of us. Romans 5.12 says,

  235. Just as sin came into the world through one man

  236. and death through sin, and so death spread to all

  237. men because all sinned. For sin indeed was in the

  238. world before the law was given, but sin is not

  239. counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from

  240. Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not

  241. like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of

  242. the one who was to come. So this is saying

  243. that we are guilty of that as Adam was our representative,

  244. the head of mankind, that Adam sinned and brought judgment, condemnation, curses, alienation, hostility,

  245. all of these things from where he was. He was

  246. initially good with God. Now he was not good with God.

  247. And everyone after him inherited this problem. And we might

  248. think that maybe it's a little unfair that we're guilty

  249. because of Adam's sin. But there's, I think, a couple

  250. things to consider here. First is, if you want to

  251. know how sinful you are, this is a really good place.

  252. Because it's possible that we can feel angry that we're

  253. guilty because of Adam's sin. But there's also a potential

  254. that what we're saying, and we don't even realize it,

  255. is that we think we could have done better if

  256. we were in his position. And the Bible has a

  257. word for that. It's called pride. Most of us struggle

  258. day to day now with, honestly, kind of probably more

  259. simple sins. Adam sinned and so brought down all of

  260. mankind who would come from him. And even if you

  261. didn't buy this, just to be clear, there's no refuting

  262. the fact that you've already failed to live as you ought.

  263. You are just as much a sinner through your own choices.

  264. But second, if you are upset and or want to

  265. reject being guilty by being an Adam, then you would

  266. also have to reject the fact that you could be

  267. righteous by being found in Christ. That's the argument that

  268. Paul is making here. He's saying it's because all of

  269. those are in Adam, they die. But all those in

  270. Christ will live.

  271. We're going to get there.

  272. God's word tells us that death, this fallen nature, is

  273. a problem for all mankind. And scripture has no shortage

  274. of words on how it describes us before we are

  275. in Christ, which is mainly what we're going to be

  276. looking at. So again, this is super important because scripture

  277. here isn't just, scripture isn't here just to make us

  278. feel good.

  279. Honestly, it's scary when people misuse scripture.

  280. I've literally seen like little placards and things like that,

  281. that would say like, ask of me, or if you'd

  282. like but worship me, I'd give you all these things.

  283. And I'm like, that was quoting Satan. And people didn't

  284. realize what was happening in that moment. Scripture is here

  285. to tell us the truth. We need to not just

  286. choose the verses that make us feel happy and warm,

  287. but we need God to tell us exactly what our

  288. problem is. Why that's important is because you know how

  289. many times I've had problems in my marriage, problems in

  290. my relationships, problems in my life. There's problems with the

  291. people who are sitting around me. And I just thought

  292. it was because of all the other people. Maybe I

  293. thought it was my upbringing. Maybe I thought it was

  294. the circumstances, the cards I've been dealt. Just for me

  295. to read God's word and have it correct me and

  296. show me that it's actually a deeper sin issue than

  297. I had yet to realize about myself.

  298. My selfishness.

  299. My desire to be a God. My desire for pleasure

  300. or comfort more than than giving God glory. The amount

  301. of times that I've gone to Scripture just to find

  302. out that no one is good, not even me. Scripture

  303. is a good mirror, especially when you just read it

  304. straight through rather.

  305. Than picking the nice ones. Look what Paul says in

  306. Romans 3. Romans 3.

  307. It says, what then? Are we Jews any better off?

  308. No, not at all.

  309. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks,

  310. that's just everyone, are under sin. And you can say, well,

  311. what does that mean? Well, Paul is literally about to

  312. quote scripture to us to tell us what that means.

  313. And it's kind of brutal. It says, as it is written,

  314. so he's quoting authoritative scripture. It says, no one is righteous, no,

  315. not one. No one understands. No one seeks for God.

  316. All have turned aside. Together they have become worthless. No

  317. one does good, not even one. Their throat is an

  318. open grave. They use their tongues to deceive. The venom

  319. of asps is.

  320. Under their lips.

  321. Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness. Their feet

  322. are swift to shed blood. In their paths are ruin

  323. and misery. In the way of peace they have not known.

  324. There is no fear of God before their eyes. Paul

  325. is doing something incredible here. Paul is showing both how

  326. Jew and Gentile, which is everyone, are not good. That

  327. all of us are under sin. And Paul then is

  328. here quoting Psalms and some pieces of Isaiah saying, To

  329. then define what he means by we're all under sin.

  330. And I actually want us to turn there. This is

  331. one of those places we get to be hands-on with

  332. our Bibles. We're going to turn to Psalm 14. Psalm 14.

  333. It's basically kind of close to the middle of your Bible.

  334. Psalm 14.

  335. He's quoting the first couple of verses.

  336. Let's look at this together. Put your eyes on it.

  337. Psalm 14. He says, the fool says in his heart,

  338. there is no God.

  339. They are corrupt.

  340. They do abominable deeds. There is none who does good.

  341. Listen to this.

  342. The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of

  343. man to see if there are any who understand, who

  344. seek after God. They all have turned aside. Together they

  345. have become corrupt. There is none who does good.

  346. Not even one. This is where Paul is pulling from.

  347. What's hard is many of us are still too prideful

  348. and we can even still, after Paul just clearly quotes

  349. scripture here, want to write Paul off. Start to justify

  350. ourselves or you want to use our experience to say

  351. that Paul isn't saying what he just is clearly saying here.

  352. My family and I, we like to use these verses

  353. from Romans 3 to remind each other.

  354. Of the truth.

  355. So if you ask us how we're doing and we

  356. say good, there's a good chance you'll hear one of

  357. us say no. No one is good. Not one.

  358. No one is good. No one seeks for God.

  359. Let's go back to this Ephesians text. And Paul says

  360. that in our sinful nature we are dead. He then

  361. goes on to paint a pretty horrifying picture of mankind

  362. in a sin. It's not a hopeful thing. These verses

  363. are not meant to give us butterflies, but they're verses

  364. that are meant for the sobering reality of where we

  365. came from or where we still are if we have

  366. yet to come to Christ.

  367. Let's look at these, the first three verses.

  368. It says, and you were dead in the trespasses and

  369. sins in which you once walked, following the course of

  370. this world, following the prince of the power of the air,

  371. the spirit that is now at work in the sons

  372. of disobedience, among whom we all once lived in the

  373. passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the

  374. flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of

  375. wrath like the rest of mankind. So before one is

  376. in Christ, Paul says that this is every single one

  377. of us. Dead in sin, following this world, following and

  378. literally having Satan at work in us.

  379. Like this is not a good picture.

  380. To the end that we're living in the flesh, carrying

  381. out the desires of both the flesh and the mind.

  382. And not for good purposes. That we're by nature children

  383. of wrath. It's not a good look. But the pervasiveness

  384. of this problem is worse than you think. It goes

  385. much deeper than just the wrong things we do. It's

  386. that it's a problem with what our hearts want. It's

  387. a problem with the status of our hearts, of our minds,

  388. which is a big problem when the world, the world

  389. has a motto, and even some Christians, of follow your heart.

  390. The dentist sign. Today. He goes, I followed where my

  391. heart wanted me to go. And that's where I ended up.

  392. It's a biblical principle.

  393. The Bible, in fact, though, tells us to do the opposite.

  394. Not to follow your heart.

  395. Because when it diagnoses your heart, it is not giving

  396. you like flying colors.

  397. It is red flags all over the place.

  398. The Bible actually tells us that our sinful actions are

  399. just showing the true state of our heart. Look what

  400. Jeremiah has to say about mankind's heart. Jeremiah 17, 9.

  401. The heart is deceitful above all things. That's a crazy verse.

  402. Deceitful above all things and desperately sick. Who can understand it?

  403. So this is in the time of Jeremiah.

  404. We know Adam. Sin fell. Sin came into the world.

  405. The next generation started murdering each other. A couple generations

  406. down from there, people started taking extra wives. Things just

  407. kind of started getting like this downhill ball rolling and

  408. getting faster and uglier. To the point where God looks

  409. down on mankind and Genesis chapter six, let's actually turn there.

  410. Genesis chapter six, God looks down on mankind and sees

  411. a pretty horrifying sight. Genesis chapter six, verse five says,

  412. the Lord saw the wickedness of man was great in

  413. the earth.

  414. Listen to this. And that every intention of the thoughts

  415. of his heart was.

  416. Only evil continually. Really? It's pretty bad.

  417. So God decides he's going to deal with it.

  418. Sends a flood. Saves a family to repopulate the world.

  419. And after that, that family, Noah, offers sacrifice to God.

  420. And let's move over to verse 8. Verse 21, it says,

  421. The Lord said in his heart, I will never again

  422. curse the ground because of man. For the intention of

  423. man's heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I

  424. ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.

  425. So here's the deal.

  426. Man's heart is still bad. But God is making a

  427. promise to say, I'm never going to destroy the world

  428. in this same way. But the problem of the heart

  429. in its condition, he says, from his youth, at a

  430. young age, man has already gone astray in his heart.

  431. We're like, well, that was just Noah's day and Jeremiah's day.

  432. Let's look over to Matthew 15.

  433. Jesus wants to tell us something about what's in our heart.

  434. This is fun. I like this. We're like doing Bible

  435. study together, flipping around.

  436. Jesus is teaching about what actually defiles a person.

  437. Matthew 15, starting.

  438. In verse 18, he says, but what comes out of

  439. the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.

  440. For out of the heart comes evil thoughts, murder, and adultery,

  441. sexual immorality, theft, false witness, and slander. So even Jesus

  442. in his day can recognize that the problem has to

  443. do with what's in our heart and what's coming out.

  444. Mankind has always had a heart problem. Before Christ, we

  445. were ruled in mind, heart, and deed by our fallen nature.

  446. And it's not that we were just indifferent to God.

  447. That's not what the Bible tells us. It's that we

  448. were hostile to God, whether we realize it or not.

  449. Like, look at this.

  450. So here we go. We're going to speed run some verses,

  451. but hopefully they're clear in just what they say. Colossians

  452. 121 says, Romans 8, 7, 8. It says, For the

  453. mind that is set on the flesh is what?

  454. Hostile. To who?

  455. God. For it does not do what? Submit to God's law. Indeed,

  456. it can, it what?

  457. It cannot.

  458. And it says, Those who are in the flesh cannot

  459. please God. Titus 3, 3. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient,

  460. led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our

  461. days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating

  462. one another. Jesus himself, 834 of John's gospel. He says,

  463. Jesus answered them, truly, truly, I say to you, everyone

  464. who practices sin is a slave to sin. The picture

  465. that scripture paints of our sinful selves, our sinful nature,

  466. is not a hopeful one for mankind. We're dead in sin.

  467. Slaves to sin. Hostile to God and his law. Sons

  468. of disobedience. So here's a question. If those are true,

  469. which I believe they are, it's what God's word says.

  470. If those are true, how did we ever come to

  471. be saved by God? How did we come to a

  472. God we hated? How did we come to a God

  473. we were hostile against? How did we stop being ruled

  474. by the spirit of disobedience that's at work in the

  475. sons of disobedience? Where did this change of heart come from?

  476. You see, here's the deal. The Bible is full of

  477. pleas for mankind to change their heart. In Ezekiel 18,

  478. at the end of it, he tells the people of Israel,

  479. make for yourself a new heart.

  480. Which is interesting.

  481. Because it only takes a handful of chapters later where

  482. God says, I'm going to make a promise that one

  483. day I'm going to do it. Let's turn there right now.

  484. Ezekiel chapter 34.

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  485. And I love the reason. It's kind of funny.

  486. It's not funny to our pride, but it is funny.

  487. Ezekiel 34 says, No, just kidding, 36.

  488. Sorry.

  489. Ezekiel chapter 36. We're going.

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  490. To start in verse 16. The word of the Lord

  491. came to me, Son of man, when the house of

  492. Israel lived in their own land, they defiled it by

  493. their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were

  494. like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity.

  495. So I poured out my wrath upon them for the

  496. blood that they had shed in the land, for the

  497. idols with which they had defiled it. I scattered them

  498. among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries.

  499. In accordance with their ways and their deeds, I judged them.

  500. But when they came to the nations, wherever they came,

  501. they profaned my holy name. And that people said of them,

  502. these are the people of the Lord, and yet they

  503. had to go out of his land? But I had

  504. concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel

  505. had profaned among the nations to which they came. Therefore,

  506. say to the house of Israel, thus says the Lord God,

  507. it is not for your sake, O house of Israel,

  508. that I'm about to act, but for the sake of

  509. my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations

  510. to which you came. And I will vindicate the holiness

  511. of my great name, which has been profaned among the

  512. nations and which you have profaned among them. And the

  513. nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the

  514. Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before

  515. their eyes. I will take you from the nations and

  516. gather you from all the countries and bring you into

  517. your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you

  518. and you shall be clean from all your uncleanness and

  519. from all your idols I will cleanse you. And here

  520. it is.

  521. And I will give you a new heart.

  522. And a new spirit I will put within you. And

  523. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh

  524. and give you a heart of flesh. And I will

  525. put my spirit within you and cause you to walk

  526. in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

  527. So God shows up.

  528. Chapters later after telling them, if you just would repent,

  529. if you just would repent, And eventually God makes a promise.

  530. He said, they're causing problems. They're profaning my name everywhere

  531. they go. But for the sake of my own name,

  532. I'm going to act. There's going to come a day

  533. when I will gather my people and I will give

  534. them a new heart. I will give them a new

  535. spirit to cause them to walk in my own way.

  536. So how do we come to be saved by God

  537. It leads me to my main takeaway for today, which

  538. is your salvation is the greatest miracle. Our salvation is

  539. the greatest miracle. Think about the hymn Amazing Grace. Amazing Grace,

  540. how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.

  541. I once was lost, but now I'm found. Was blind,

  542. but now I see. Lost people don't find themselves. Blind

  543. people do not make themselves see. Deaf people don't cause

  544. themselves to hear. Slaves don't set themselves free. And dead

  545. people do not make themselves come alive. Some verses we're

  546. going to go through. The Son of Man came to

  547. seek and save the lost. 2 Corinthians 2. And even

  548. if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those

  549. who are perishing. In their case, the God of this

  550. world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers to keep

  551. them from seeing the light of the gospel of the

  552. glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For

  553. what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord,

  554. with ourselves as your servants, for Jesus' sake. For God,

  555. who said, let light shine out of darkness, has shown

  556. in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge

  557. of of the glory of God in the face of

  558. Jesus Christ.

  559. John 8. Why do you not understand what I say?

  560. This is Jesus speaking. It is because you cannot bear

  561. to hear my word.

  562. You are of your father, the devil, and your will

  563. is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer

  564. from the beginning and does not stand in the truth

  565. because there is no truth in him. When he lies,

  566. he speaks out of his own character, for he is

  567. a liar and the father of lies. But because I

  568. tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which one

  569. of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth,

  570. why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God

  571. hears the words of God. The reason why you do

  572. not hear them is that you are not of God.

  573. John 8, a couple verses actually backwards, Jesus answered them, Truly, truly,

  574. I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a

  575. slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the

  576. house forever. The son remains forever. So if the son

  577. sets you free, you will be free indeed. Ephesians 2.

  578. But God..

  579. Being rich in mercy, because of the great love with

  580. which he loved us, even when we were dead in

  581. our trespasses. made us alive together with Christ.

  582. By grace you have been saved.

  583. And raised us up with him and seated us with

  584. him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. so that

  585. in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches

  586. of his grace and kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

  587. For by grace you've been saved through faith, and this

  588. is not your own doing. It is the gift of God,

  589. not a result of works, so that no one may boast,

  590. for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for

  591. good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk

  592. in them. God is the only one who can save

  593. us from our sinful selves. Our problem is so pervasive

  594. that it is not something we can change ourself, but

  595. it's something that requires God to move first, to give

  596. us a new heart, to be born again spiritually, to

  597. be spiritually risen from the dead. And there's a word

  598. for this in the Bible. It's called regeneration. It's what

  599. the Holy Spirit does to our hearts that enables us

  600. to have faith, turn to Christ, and obey God. Look

  601. at this, Titus 3, 3 through 7. For we ourselves

  602. were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions

  603. and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated

  604. by others and hating one another. But when the goodness

  605. of God, or the goodness and loving kindness of God,

  606. our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works

  607. done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy.

  608. by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

  609. whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ

  610. our Savior, so that being justified by his grace, we

  611. might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

  612. Just as we were born in sin, we need to

  613. be born again. And I'm not making this up, because

  614. Jesus had a very fun nighttime conversation with a man

  615. named Nicodemus. In John 3, let's look at it. Jesus

  616. answered him, truly, truly, I say to you, unless one

  617. is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  618. Nicodemus said to him, how can a man be born

  619. when he is old? Can he enter a second time

  620. into his mother's womb and be born? Jesus answered, truly, truly,

  621. I say to you, unless one is born of water

  622. in the spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  623. That which is born of the flesh is is flesh.

  624. And that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

  625. Do not marvel that I say to you, you must

  626. be born again. And then he gives.

  627. Kind of an explanation. It's kind of funny. He says,

  628. the wind blows.

  629. Where it wishes and you hear its sound, but you

  630. do not know where it comes from or where it goes.

  631. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.

  632. Which is kind of, I think, Jesus' way of saying,

  633. you know it when you see it. You want to

  634. know who's been born again? You know it when you

  635. see it. You don't know where the wind's coming from,

  636. but you see it when.

  637. It moves something. That we who were born in Adam

  638. need to be found in Christ.

  639. We need God's spirit poured out on our hearts to

  640. give us new hearts, new sight, new life. And I

  641. believe this is the last little bit of homework for us.

  642. Let's move over to 1 Corinthians.

  643. We need God's spirit poured out on our hearts to

  644. give us new hearts, new sight, new life. The beginning

  645. of 1 Corinthians. Let's start in verse 18. It says,

  646. For the word of the cross is folly to those

  647. who are perishing. But to us who are being saved,

  648. it is the power of God. I'm jumping down a

  649. little bit. Verse 22 says, For Jews demand signs and

  650. Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling

  651. block to Jews and folly to Gentiles. But to those

  652. who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power

  653. of God and the wisdom of God, For the foolishness

  654. of God is wiser than men and the weakness of

  655. God is stronger than men. For consider your calling, brothers.

  656. Not many of you were wise according to worldly standards.

  657. Not many were powerful. Not many were of noble birth.

  658. But God chose what is foolish in the world to

  659. shame the wise. God chose the weak in the world.

  660. to shame the strong. God chose what is low and

  661. despised in the world, even things that are not, to

  662. bring to nothing the things that are, so that no

  663. human might do what? Boast in the presence of God.

  664. And then what does he say next? And because of him,

  665. you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom

  666. from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Amen. so that

  667. as it is written, let no one who boasts, or

  668. let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. So

  669. God has done something here. But once again, like we said,

  670. we need God's spirit poured out in our hearts to

  671. give us new hearts, new sight, and new life. Because

  672. look at this, chapter two, verse 12. It says, now

  673. we have received not the spirit of the world, but

  674. the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand

  675. the things freely given us by God. And we impart

  676. this in words not taught by human wisdom, but taught

  677. by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

  678. Look at verse 14. The natural person does not accept

  679. the things of the Spirit of God, for they are

  680. folly to him and he is not able to understand

  681. them because they are spiritually discerned we need to be

  682. born again we need to be born again from above

  683. and birth I think here is a perfect example there's

  684. a reason Jesus is giving the example of birth but

  685. I think birth is a good example because we're all

  686. here It happened to us. But there's those who were

  687. born in Adam. They need to be born again. But

  688. for all those in Adam, there is condemnation and death.

  689. But for all those in Christ, there is forgiveness and life. Now,

  690. next week, we're going to look at what it means

  691. to be in Christ. But as we've seen today, what

  692. it means to be an Adam, our death, hostility, blindness

  693. to God and his gospel, as we looked at the

  694. fact that God can overcome our rebellion, and that if

  695. it wasn't for him, if he let us continue in

  696. our own way, continuing with our old heart of stone,

  697. that we would never look to him. But this isn't, again,

  698. a time to beat ourselves up or beat anything up.

  699. It's actually a reason to rejoice. Because deep down, I mean,

  700. we know that it's only because of God's intervention that

  701. we are in Christ. It's the reason we pray to

  702. God for our kids to be saved. It's the reason

  703. we pray for our family, our spouses, our co-workers, our

  704. friends and enemies to be saved. Because you've met them.

  705. You know it's going to take an act of God

  706. to do something in their life. But we also know

  707. this because we didn't come to God because we were

  708. any more smart, any more wise, or any better than

  709. any other person. And in fact, the first Corinthians seems

  710. to suggest the other, otherwise. We came to God by

  711. his grace and the truth of his gospel, the gospel

  712. that goes forth as his means of drawing his people

  713. to himself. The word that brings faith in the hearts

  714. of God's sheep, that the sheep hear his voice and listen.

  715. I like how a child on a playground full of

  716. noise and people can pick out their parents' voice in

  717. the midst of the chaos. That we, as God's people,

  718. chosen by his good plan and purpose, have heard our

  719. Savior's voice, calling us to come out of the grave

  720. and live. As children of wrath, dead in sin, only

  721. Christ's call of salvation can make us live again. Our

  722. salvation is a miracle and we have no room for boasting.

  723. Because left to ourselves, we would have just been lost.

  724. But as much as we've fallen, we see that God's

  725. grace through the work of Christ is the only hope

  726. for fallen humanity.

  727. And this should cause us and.

  728. Empower us to continue to pray to God for the

  729. lost around us. That you can't save anyone. They can't

  730. save themselves. We cry out to the Lord that he

  731. would do what only he can do. That we wouldn't

  732. take for granted this grace that he has shown us,

  733. that he has given us. That we would share the

  734. good news with big faith, trusting that God is using

  735. that moment to bring about faith and new life in

  736. those who hear his gospel. It's for every sinner who

  737. looks to Christ and believes.

  738. They will be saved.

  739. That's really good news, because Christ, the perfect one, our

  740. second perfect Adam, came and lived a sinless life, and

  741. yet died in the place for all those who would

  742. look to him. And on the third day, he rose

  743. from the dead, showing that not only had he conquered death,

  744. but that for all those who look at him, all

  745. those who look to him, they too will be raised

  746. to eternal life, both spiritually and physically, At the last day.

  747. For every one of you who has been born again

  748. by the Spirit of God, my plea to you today

  749. would be just the same as Paul's.

  750. Just a couple chapters later in Ephesians. Ephesians 4, 17.

  751. It says, Now I say this and testify in the

  752. Lord that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles

  753. do in the futility of their minds. They are darkened

  754. in their understanding alienated from the life of God because

  755. of the ignorance that is in them due to their

  756. hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given

  757. themselves up to sensuality, greedy, greedy to practice every kind

  758. of impurity.

  759. But that is not the way you learned Christ.

  760. Assuming that you've heard about him and were taught in

  761. him as the truth is in Christ to put off

  762. your old self, which belongs to your former manner of

  763. life and is corrupt and through deceitful desires, and to

  764. be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to

  765. put on the new self created after the likeness of

  766. God in true righteousness and holiness. Your salvation is the

  767. greatest miracle. Our salvation is the greatest miracle. And now

  768. as God's people bought by his blood and brought to

  769. new life, let us live like it. Let us be humble.

  770. Let us be grateful that we get to love the

  771. God who loved us before we ever loved him.

  772. And all God's people said, amen. Would you please stand

  773. to your feet?
