The Yellow-bellied Preacher - Bro Jeremy Howell 8-18-2024

How many of you have heard that term yellow bellied.

When I was a child, I would hear older people

used the adjective yellow belly, denoting that a person lacked

courage or that that person was easily pride. How many

of you have ever read the story of Chicken Little,

Our text is found in a New Testament book of

the Holy Bible. Saint Matthew's Gospel is the first of

four Gospels, and it's also the first book of a

New Testament. As I read through the Gospel today right now,

at this moment, I've come to a point where Peter

is in some sort of ministerial crisis. He is acting

in a way that he did not expect himself to

act in He's behaving in a manner that he thought

he would never behave him.

As we read through Matthew's Gospel, I saw there was

a record of Jesus Christ public ministry and Brother Jesse

that public ministry was second to none other.

One thing that I noticed.

About the public ministry of Jesus it was impeccable. There

was never a moment in his ministry that he was

He wasn't hesitant or nuctant to preach the words of

his father to religious leaders.

We find when he turned thirty years of age.

And nowhere can we conclude that Jesus was.

We cannot reach that conclusion that Jesus had been a

yellow belly at some time in his ministry. Now, every

minister that has attempted to deliver the gospel and preach

to the multitudes, the masses or individuals at some point

have found themselves in clme to being yellow belly, a

But we find that Jesus was not one to back up.

to step forward and stand up.

you there's young people in this building that have always

been in church and have known nothing but the goodness

and the grace of God.

I never did go out there. I don't know of

the things my pastor's warned me about. You better not know,

you need not know.

But I was thinking of my brother today. Him and

I haven't seen each other in a pretty good while.

It's not of her own choice. I don't believe that

it's just I'm busy.

He's busy. I'm pastoring a church. He's busy working. His

family is growing. My family is growing. Increased responsibilities of

both parties.

But I remember when our boys were young, they had

heard me and their daddy talking about playing sports.

How we excelled at playing sports.

And one day the Howard boys set out to be

football players and brothers starre and they.

Went out the front lawn and they tried to play football.

And I sat back and I watched, and I realized

they didn't even know the terminology. Now, the Gereman Howell boys,

they had a pretty good idea because I had thrown

the ball with them a lot, and I had run

plays with them, and they had a pretty good idea.

I had to play backyard football. But my nephew that

was raised in a hole in his church by a

good dad mom.

He knew a little bit about the game. And he

caught the football. One of the Howell boys threw it

to him and he called it. One of the other

Howell boys ran him down.

And tackled him, and the ball went rolling out of

his hand, and him so sure of what he was

speaking about, he used the wrong word. He said, Oh no,

right across the lawne.

I turned the red face with embarrassment because I felt

terrible for him.

But there was no shame at all for him. It

was just another day, just another game, and he was right.

And y'all know what I did. I rejoiced in my spirit.

That my nephew didn't know the game or the games

that almost took me and his dad out of church.

I once again feel the sweet spirit of God.

I knew then, Sister Wooton, we had succeeded in keeping

our boys from the world. Just a couple of weeks later,

I would run into one of my high school.

Friends that I played and we ain't sail in sports.

He went on to play college ball for.

Football coach. I forget what university he went. It wasn't

a pipswheten university. Another friend of mine, his best friend,

is the legendary linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens, none other

and corrected. But a new convert in Christ Jesus, he

could tell my spirit was different. And I said, sir,

I promise I walked in here ten minutes ago, and

I've been trying to get out. I said, That's why

I'm out here right now. He says, I believe you.

He said, do you mind if we do a broth

been ashamed of him. But one of them that got

pastorates and for them to have to humble themself and

to pray back.

If you ever come to a place in your ministry

just sitting down. If you could get out of ministry,

I need boldness. I don't want to be embarrassed. I
