Our Risen King: “Do As I Have Done For You”

We are. Kicking off this week.

A new series, an Easter Series, A three-week Easter series where

we're going to be looking through taking things that Jesus

said in the Gospel of John Key life changing things that Jesus.

Said over the Easter. Period.

I'm redoing this week where we're going to be looking at the

Last Supper. Where Jesus?

Says to his disciples. Do as I have.

Done for you next. Week Julian's going to be

looking at the cross and Jesus, saying it is finished and then

culminating on Easter Sunday. Where we're going to be looking

at. Jesus words to.

Mary in the garden. As she, as he says to her, Who?

unapologetic gospel message. So if you've got friends.

get into this week's message. So if.

I wasn't sure whether that was great about Easter or great

about Easter is actually. Getting on with it.

Right. So we're going to be in John 13

today, so. If you want to find that in your

Bibles, I'm going to read the first few lines and then we will

get into it. It was just.

Before the Passover festival, Jesus knew that the hour had

come to him to leave this world and go to the Father.

Having loved his own who were in the world, He loved them to the

end. The evening.

Meal was in process, and the devil had already prompted

Judas. Son of Iscariot to.

Betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had

put all things under his power. And that he.

Had come from God. And was.

Returning to God. So he got up from the meal, took

off his outer clothing, wrapped and wrapping a towel around his

waist. After that he poured water into

a basin and began to wash his disciples feet, drying them with

the towel that was wrapped around him.

Let's pray. Lord Jesus, we thank you for

being with us so powerfully already in our time of worship

and I just want to invite you again to come and mould us and

change us and speak to us. I pray that you would give us

soft, not hard hearts. Soft hearts that can receive.

Your word that can, that makes us more and more like Jesus.

Amen. Amen.

So the context here, it says John writes, Jesus knew exactly

who he was. He knew that he was God.

He knew that he was the king of kings.

That he was the. Lord of Lords, he knew that's

where he had come from and he knew that is where he was going

very shortly. So therefore he decided to

display his might and power. Don't know, It says so,

therefore being King. Being the.

King of Kings being the Lord of Lords, he decided to take off

his outer garment, wrap a towel. Around his waist.

And start. Washing his disciples feet.

I mean, we've sung. About it already but.

What do you think of when when we say imagine, imagine Jesus?

What do you think? What goes through?

Your mind's eye. I mean do.

You do, you do. You see, baby Jesus, just this.

Little baby in a Manger. Do you see this?

Kind of Carpenter. Do you see this kind of

Hollywood's blue eyed, beautiful hair, wonderful beard, perfect

teeth. Jesus, maybe you see a broken.

Man blooded and beaten. Hanging up on a cross.

Well. About 60 years after Jesus went

to the cross, after Jesus does this amazing, this amazing act

of. Service for his disciples.

We're told that John sees him in all his glory.

He joins with Ezekiel and Isaiah and Daniel.

At seeing Jesus and I've just asked.

Two people to read. 2 chapters. Of our of our Bibles.

That display, that describe Jesus in all.

His glory. So, Pete, I've asked you to.

You can stay where you are. I'll just give you the mic if

Psalm 90. 7 for us. The Lord rings, let the earth be

glad that the distant shores rejoice. 1000 thick gardens

surrounded him. Righteousness and justice are

the foundation of his brother. Fire goes for him.

It's intruded both on every side.

His lightning lights up the world, the earth seas, and

humbles the mountain of melt like wax before the Lord, before

the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His

righteousness, and all the people see His glory.

All who worship images are put to shame.

Those who boast in idols worship Him.

Were you Lords Zion hears and rejoicings, and the villages of

Judah of the land, because of your judgments, Lord.

For you, Lord, are most high over all the earth.

You are exhausted far above all gods, that those who love the

Lord make evil, for he guards the lives of the faithful ones

and delivers them from the hands of the wicked.

Light shines on the righteous, joy on the upright and heart.

Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous, and pray before we

go. Can you give her the mic she's

going to read Revelation 4 to? Us After this I looked and there

before me was a door standing open in heaven, and the voice I

had Hearst first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, Come

up here and I will show you what must take place after this.

At once I was in the spirit and there before me was a throne in

heaven with someone sitting on it, and the one who sat there

had the appearance of Jasper and Ruby.

A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne.

Surrounding the throne were 24 other Thrones and seated on them

were 24 elders. They were dressed in white and

had crowns of gold on their head.

From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals

of Thunder. In front of the throne 7 lamps

were blazing. These are the seven spirits of

God. Also in front of the throne

there was what looked like the sea of glass, clear as crystal.

In the centre around the throne were four living creatures, and

they were covered with eyes in front and in back.

The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like

an ox. The third had a face like a man,

The 4th was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living

creatures had 6 wings and was covered with eyes all around,

even under its wings. Day and night they never stopped

saying Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was and is

and is to come whenever the living creatures give glory,

honour and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives

forever and ever. The 24 elders fall down before

him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives forever

and ever. They lay their crowns before the

throne and say you are worthy our Lord and God to receive

glory and honour and power. For you created all things, and

by your will they were created and have their being.

Amen. Thank you.

Thank you. I just want to encourage you

that was. Psalm 97 and Revelation 4

meditate on chapters like these. Even this week rereads those

chapters because they. They give us an image.

They give us a picture of who? Our God.

Really is. You see, it is.

So. Good, and I encourage.

You to meditate. On who God truly is, because we

we know that in this moment, God has.

Become a man. He is Jesus, he is Yahweh, but

Yahweh become a man and we can we can overlook how amazing

that. Statement is.

We can overlook how how amazing that is because we fail to see

how big a step it was for him to go.

Down from heaven to earth. But when we meditate on

scriptures like this, we see how how amazing he is in all his

glory, all his splendour, that he is surrounded in

unapproachable light that that we can't we.

Can't in in our own. In our own selves, we can't look

upon him. You know the Old Testament

Saints. That God would say say they

would say to him, God, let us see your.

Glory and God would say no, I can't.

Show you all my. Glory because you're just you'll

just evaporate, you'll die instantly.

But when we when we gaze upon him, when we when we meditate on

heaven, on heaven's throne room, we start to see how.

Big a step. Down it was.

I mean, every single time, any one of us.

Steps down we do. Something that we.

Feel is beneath us or below us. It is nothing compared.

To what Jesus did. By leaving.

Heaven to come down to earth. He is in approach.

He is in unapproachable light, surrounded.

By thick darkness. He is he, he's, he's.

Described John. He describes him.

He he can't. Even look upon him, but so he

describes him as as emeralds, as jewels, as Jasper, as as Ruby,

as rubies. He is the most beautiful as

we've. Been talking about in the past

few. Weeks that he is the most

amazing. Wonderful, brilliant, a treasure

it describes. It describes.

Rainbows this, everything that he.

Does is beautiful? It says that he is.

Surrounded in all. Power that everywhere.

He is there is lightning. The psalmist writes this

lightning and. Thick.

Thick darkness around him. Showing that he has all.

Power. This isn't just just atmospheric

music that goes everywhere that. Jesus does like a spill film.

You know you have. You have the accent of the

character they walk on stage and you have the accent of that

music behind him. You know, God walks on stage.

No, that's that's not what this is about.

This is this is this is just displaying his pure.

Power. The the the.

Around him it says that there are there are these these

lights, these lamp stands and they're displaying his presence.

And seven is the is the. Number of perfection.

It's the number of. Wholeness and what's his?

Saying is that he is omnipresent.

He is the only. Being in the universe that is

everywhere at once, he knows everything.

He knows what's happening in Australia right now.

He's. There, he's with people right

now, with us. Here he is.

Everywhere it says that he is. They're surrounding him is.

Something that's like a. Sea of glass and now what?

What that is? It's not just meant to be.

Beautiful to to the eye, but actually the the the sea, the

oceans to the ancient mindset was seen as a a place of chaos,

a place of evil. And it's a.

Picture of Jesus, he calms like Jesus on the boat.

In the storm. The winds are raging.

The storms are raging. The ancient mind would have seen

that as as kind of the. The evil, the chaos.

Trying to prevail against gods and.

What does Jesus do? He doesn't wrestle.

He doesn't. Fight, he just says.

Shut up, it goes. It stops.

It just stops. Think of him walking on the

water. We think that's amazing.

You know, I'd love to be able. To walk on water but but it

goes. Up another level.

Because the the imagery for the ancient mind is that the.

Chaos the. Evil that is surrounding us.

Jesus just walks. Upon it.

He just crushes it under his feet.

Doesn't matter how. Big the waves are, how loud it

screams. He just walks upon it.

Is he? He is the.

One who all? Creation worships.

We are told in. Jesus tells us himself in the

Gospels. The if the if you stopped these

these. I think it's talking about the

children. At the time you stop them

worshipping me. The rocks will.

Cry out. Because.

Everything has been created. To worship me and we see this

image of him. Surrounded by these weird

descriptive creatures with different.

Heads. That, that, that cherubim,

they're, they're thrown guardians.

But what? We need to get is that they?

Never, ever stop worshipping. Him.

They. Never run out of things to say.

You know one of those songs? That we sung earlier was that

we? You know, we could never, I

can't remember the words, but basically we could never, we can

never fully describe, never give enough superbatives about how

amazing our God is. But if you're in Christ, you've

got. Eternity to try you.

Know we will never stop and. They just surround the throne

saying holy, holy, holy. That he is completely separate,

set apart. He is above everything in all

things that He is. He is the He is the eternal

architect. He's the creator of all things.

See it? Shows in Revelation that the

elders they cast their crowns before him.

The psalmist ends his Psalm saying that everyone.

Praise the name of. The Lord ultimately they're.

Saying is that. Everything we have is rubbish

compared to you. Nothing compares to your

greatness. For you created all things, and

by your will they were created and have their being.

See, God isn't just great. Because he is strong, God is

great. He is.

Master over all things. Nothing exists without him.

He is over and in all. Things.

And this is who Jesus is. And he laid.

Aside that, it wasn't. Taken from him, he chose to lay

it down to. Lay aside, His Majesty.

To wash, to serve, to take. On the role.

Of the lowliest servant. You see, as Jesus.

Walked into this room, this this room where they'd be having this

last of meal, this passive, a meal.

There should have been hues of people around the whole of.

Jerusalem, waiting, lining up to serve him to do everything.

That he he needed doing because he is the King.

He's the King of Kings instead as his his disciples.

Sit down to eat. He gets down on his knees and

starts washing their dirty, dusty, filthy feet.

Now allow you to imagine this for a second.

You're at a dinner table and the most important person in the

room starts taking your shoes off and washing your feet.

A bit uncomfortable. I think.

Slightly awkward, I. Mean, if you've seen the the

latest series of the chosen, I think they do it really well.

How how they're all just kind of looking at each other.

What, what is going on? What is he doing?

What, what, what? What is Jesus doing?

You know they're all getting. More and more.

Uncomfortable with the idea? That Jesus is.

Washing their feet because because they're uncomfortable.

Not because they don't like their feet.

Getting touched. You know that that that is an

uncomfortable. Thing they're they're

uncomfortable because Jesus. They know is their Messiah.

He is the king of kings. He's the one.

He's the true son who's going to sit upon.

David's throne, who is going to wipe out, you know?

Who's going to who they believe is going to?

Remove the Romans, who's going to rule over the entire world?

And this king is washing their feet.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Jesus.

Kings have servants to do that. Actually, kings have servants.

Who have? Servants to do that.

It and but Jesus with one. Action he turns their.

Way of thinking completely. Upside down.

See their way of. Thinking is important.

People do important things and they do not.

Do menial tasks. The more important you are, the

less menial tasks you do, and the more.

Important things you do, the more people who do stuff for

you. And Jesus turns that completely.

On its head and Peter can't. Stand it anymore?

You know, we get round and and I love it.

I love, I love it. It's.

Peter says it says. It comes to Peter and next verse

and it says. He came to Simon.

Peter who said to him, Lord, are you?

Going to wash my feet. Jesus replied.

You do not. Realise now what I'm doing, but

later you will understand, no? No, Jesus and Peter said you

shall never wash my. Feet.

What would your response be? Would you stay quiet?

Would you be uncomfortable or would you like Pete to go?

Jesus, this isn't happening. You, you should not be touching

my feet. Do you know where they've?

Been Jesus. Last week I challenged you.

I challenged you to build a habit of spending time gazing

upon Christ, upon gazing upon His beauty.

And I hope that you did, because the reality is.

When we don't do. That it's usually down to the

fact. That we don't believe Jesus is

important enough to spend time with?

We don't really. See him as the.

King that he truly is. This is why Peter was

uncomfortable with it and. You would be saying no, no, no,

no. It's because I didn't have

enough time. Well, just to push.

Back on that. I really don't have time.

To take the car to have an MOT but I do it because it needs to

be done. Not a fan of doing laundry?

But I also like clean clothes. Don't like food shopping?

But. I like to have food in the

fridge. How much?

More when we're talking. About spending time.

With the king of the universe. See, if we're not making a habit

of spending time with Him when He has, He has opened the doors

for us to walk into His freedom. We're saying that God, you're

not important enough to spend. Time with.

Well, either that or we haven't. Truly.

Believed that we're worthy. And let me say, you will never.

Be worthy of his affection. None of us are worthy of His

affection, but He has chosen to make Himself available to you.

He has chosen to wash you in His blood so that you can come into

His presence By faith and faith alone you can come into His

presence. Just put up the next.

Few verses it says. Romans 5 says But God

demonstrated this that his own. Love for us in this while.

We were still sinners. Not when you became perfect,

Not. When you did enough good.

Stuff. No, no, no.

When you were an awful person. When you were at your worst.

Christ died for us. Ephesians tells us.

But because of his great love for us, God, who was rich in

mercy, made us alive with Christ.

Even when we were dead. So don't say he's saying that we

were dead. We were so far.

Away from Christ, that we were dead in our sins.

In our In the things that were against gods.

But it is by grace. You have been saved.

Not by what you. Do good or bad?

Psalm 103 says he does not treat.

Us as our sins deserve, or repay us according to our iniquities.

See, the problem is, is that too often our focus is upon

ourselves. We're looking at ourselves.

We're looking at how good. Or bad that we.

Are I've been good? Surely Jesus should do this for

me. I've been bad.

There's no point even trying to come to him today if he knew.

Who I was, he does. But he still wants to come into.

He wants you to come into his presence.

He desires, you see, And if we're not taking that up, that

opportunity, we're saying to God, you're not important

enough. Or we're saying I don't believe.

That you're powerful enough that you would forgive.

Me because my. Sin You can forgive everyone

else's sins but my. Sin will be a barrier for your

love. And every.

Single one of those things is rubbish and so.

Peter continues. It says.

Jesus answered. Remember, Peter has just said

no, you're not doing this. And Jesus answered, Unless I

wash you, you. Have no part with me.

Then Lords, Peter replied. Not just my feet.

But my hands and my head as well, Jesus answered.

Those who have a bath need only to.

Wash their feet. There the whole body is clean

and you. Are clean, though not everyone

of you. For he knew who.

Was going to betray. Him and he that.

Was why he said. Not everyone of you is clean,

you see. Jesus speaks to him and then all

of a sudden Peter gets it. Well, he kind of gets.

It he doesn't really get it. But what he really gets is I

want you, Jesus. I want you, Jesus.

And if if if by you washing my. Feet.

Is going to get. A bit of you.

Wash the whole of me, I'll take a shower, right?

Now at this dinner table. In front of everyone, if that's

going to get me closer to you see that, that's the kind of

inhibition that he's got. So do you want to get close?

To Jesus. Do you want him in your?

Life. I want that inhibition that's

Peter's got. That just says, OK, OK, you

know, you're talking about feet, but I really want you, Jesus.

I want you more than anyone else in this room.

Just wash the whole of me right now.

I want that. But Jesus says Jesus.

And I imagine him saying this with a massive smile on his

face. Yeah, Peter, you.

Don't need a full. Wash I've given you a bath

already and what he's saying is that the bath is is is that he

has been purified from his sins purified because his faith in

Jesus that he believes that Jesus as as.

As he did. At the foot of Mount Hermon, as

he declares You are the Christ, you are the saving 1.

He says that declaration of faith, that was your bath.

You have been washed clean and you don't.

Need to be saved again. That that was it.

You, you are saved. You are.

You are. Living.

You are mine. I I belong?

To you, you belong to me, he said.

This is why. Baptism is so important.

You know, we we believe that you have you put your.

Faith in Jesus. You repent, you turn.

To him. And then you are.

Baptised. Baptised baptism doesn't.

Doesn't wash you. It doesn't clean you.

Spiritually it's a symbol that we died to our own life, our old

life, our old self, the old us is dead.

And then we have been a made we're made alive.

We're being washed by the blood of Jesus, symbolised by the

water as we come out and we're a new creation.

I just want to ask you, have you put your faith in Jesus?

Jesus Very. Clearly in the statement says

you are clean. But not everyone of you, and I

don't want to. Assume just because you're in

this. Hall this morning that you have

been saved. That you've been.

Washed in the. Blood of.

Christ that you have put your faith in Jesus and said you are

my Lord and Saviour. I am living.

For you. If you haven't.

You can do that. Today, you don't need to do

anything special. Which is between you.

And God say Jesus, I want to. Follow you.

I'm sorry for the way I've. Lived my life ignoring you up to

this point and I want you in my life.

And then go and tell someone and if you've done that and you

haven't been baptised. Maybe you you had?

Sprinkling as a child that that, that's great, but that's not

biblical. Biblical is.

You repent and be. Baptised you.

Fully go under the water as a believing child of God and if

you haven't done that, speak to us, Jesus.

Jesus commands us to do it. So if you haven't, we'd love to

baptise you. We love baptism Sundays.

It's a lot of work to fill up a paddling pole in here and get it

warm, but we love it. Because it's a demonstration.

What Christ has done in our lives.

See if you if you. Have been saved.

He says to Peter, you just need your feet washed, which again,

it's a symbol, it's a symbol of just daily repentance.

Because we are if you have trusted in.

Jesus for your salvation. If you follow him as your Lord

and Saviour, you are saved. But we live in a grimy, dirty

world as we walk through this. Grimy.

Dirty. World we will make.

Mistakes. We will say things, think

things, do things. That God didn't want us to do.

We will not do things. God will ask us to do something.

We'll ask us to say something and we'll.

Not do it. And so he says, you don't need a

bath, you're saved, but you just need to.

Wash that grime off and come to me in repentance.

Say I'm sorry. I'm going to live.

Differently, and the reason why we do that is we wash that grime

off, that sin off, so that our relationship with God isn't

hindered. You're saved.

But if we don't? If we let.

Sin build up. We let that stench.

Build up. We get stinky feet that our

relationship. With God is hindered.

He goes on. And he says in.

Verse 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on

his clothes, returned to his place and said, Do you

understand what I have done for you?

You call me teacher and Lord, and rightly so.

For that is what I am now that I.

Lord not I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet.

You also should wash one another's feet.

And here's our quote for the day.

I have set. You as an.

Example I have set. An example for you.

You should do. As I have done for you.

Very. Truly, I tell you, no servant is

greater than his master. Nor a.

Messenger greater than the one who sent him.

Not now that you know these things.

You will be blessed. If you do them, the king of

glory. Stepped.

Down from heaven, not to be served, but to serve you and I.

And he says his Kingdom is an upside.

Down Kingdom. And to be members of his Kingdom

means that we adopt an attitude of the king, the king.

Who is a server? Who loves to serve a king?

Who rather than asking others to.

Do what he what what he didn't. Want to do a king who got down

on his knees? With a.

Towel and a. And a bowl.

And started washing people. 'S feet and he says do the same.

So I've got a. Bucket over here.

No, we're not going to wash any of those beats.

We're not going to do that. We're not.

We're really not we. Would I would feel awkward?

You'd feel awkward. No one wants to take their shoes

off. Yeah, and actually many you may

have been in. Services where people have done

this and you know. Well, let's be honest, we would

all not like it. Guests who are here for the

first. Time you think I'm never going

back to that church. They're the weird foot washing

church. So we're just not doing that.

OK, but actually. Seriously, the reason why we're

not doing that is. Because we can miss the point,

we can miss the point of what Jesus saying.

He says do. As I have done for you.

And that's he's not talking about wash, he's not talking

about washing feet. He's talking about serving one

another so that we can spur each other on into faith and good

works. He washed AFI, it was a.

Symbol of enabling us to come in repentance and and push on in

our relationship with God so we serve one another in that same

way, he says in Philippians 2. I've just got it in your

relationships with one another have the same mindset as Christ

Jesus who? Being in the very nature.

Of God did not consider equality with God something to be used to

his own advantage. Rather, he made himself nothing.

Taking the very nature of a. Servant being made in human

likeness. And being found in.

Appearance as a man. He humbled himself.

And became obedient to death, even death on a cross.

Jesus. Loved us.

He loves you so much. He didn't just get down and.

Wash our feet. But actually he was.

He was let. He let himself be nailed naked

to a cross in all humiliation. Church he laid aside, he lay,

said he laid aside his godhood. He, he, he, he, he, he.

He didn't consider. He was God, but he didn't

consider. That something.

To grasp at he. Laid aside His Majesty for you

and. Me.

Surely we. Can lay aside our selfishness,

our self centeredness, our ambition, our pride to serve one

another. See service serving one another.

For the Christian, it's the litmus.

Test of how? How well you're.

Going in your. To walk with Christ.

Because when we see. How great he is and how far he

stepped down. How?

Can we ever say? No, I I don't do that.

And. Surely we go, I don't know how

to do that, but I love Jesus and I'm going to learn.

That's that's the. Heart of Christ.

Is our our? Response should be as Christ I

want to wash the feet of. Of Christ's bride.

I want to wash her feet. I want to serve her.

I want to create an environment that enables them to draw closer

and closer to Jesus. And you may think that that's

only. Done by these guys when they

sing. Or by by by.

People like me who? Preach, but no.

You are enabling people to encounter.

Jesus, when you boil hot water to make nice drinks with people.

When you set out. Chairs when you.

Stand at the front there and you welcome someone in when you give

someone a lift who doesn't have a car when you say.

When you when you say. Come back to mine.

And let's eat and let's, let's, let's make, let's be friends.

You are. Serving one another.

You are. Washing the feet of the bride.

And I think actually one of the best feet washers in here are

those who. Serve our children.

They are the best. Foot washers right now, those

who are serving our Crest, there was a serving.

Are our children so Jesus says, let the little children come to

me and do not hinder. Them.

See when we. Serve them, we show.

That they are important. That Jesus believes they're

important, we're just demonstrating to.

Them. That we believe you're.

Important. We're demonstrating to their

families. That we believe if your children

are. Important, but frustratingly.

And we're not the only church. There's always, we're always

lacking, we're always lacking. People to serve.

So I'm just going to unashamedly.

Just say, could you serve our kids OK now just to be.

Clear for those of you who. Have health and safety.

And and child protection. On your mind if.

Someone puts their hand up and says we can serve.

Kids, we don't just throw them in there, OK?

We have to DBS check people we have.

To we have to. Get references and all that kind

of stuff and make sure that our children are safe.

But. Could you serve our children?

We do a a six week rota 2. Weeks on.

Four weeks off. Could you commit?

To being here to serve our children on two of those weeks.

Because we we want. To display how much Jesus loves

our kids. To them we want to.

Serve them and love. Them Could the band come back

It doesn't have to be children as people of.

God we are called. To serve one another, to wash

each other's feet. And I'm going to ask the band

just to, just to. Play you can sing.
