  1. Text this morning is Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  2. So if you've got a Bible, I encourage you to open it and

  3. land there. This is part of the Sermon on

  4. the Mount where Jesus is introducing so many critical

  5. aspects of life in the Kingdom of God that he's teaching them

  6. what is it like to have life in the Kingdom of God?

  7. And unsurprisingly, he talks about money.

  8. He had already talked about sort of 3 hidden secret disciplines

  9. of the Christian life, that of giving to the needy.

  10. Like he started his series of disciplines with giving.

  11. Secret disciplines, give to the needy, secret discipline, pray

  12. in your closet. Secret discipline, fast from

  13. food, these are secret disciplines.

  14. And then, knowing that this is likely stirred up in people's

  15. hearts some anxiety, he begins to address the question of

  16. money. And so this is what he says.

  17. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths

  18. and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal.

  19. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths

  20. and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in

  21. and steal. For where your treasure is,

  22. there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body.

  23. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of

  24. light. But if your eyes are unhealthy,

  25. your whole body will be full of darkness.

  26. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that

  27. darkness? No one can serve 2 masters.

  28. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be

  29. devoted to the one and despise the other.

  30. You cannot serve both God and money.

  31. Jesus understood the reach of Babylon.

  32. We talked about Babylon last week.

  33. If you're like Babylon, where's that?

  34. But it's that move of empire to always draw us in to power and

  35. where the question of money comes up.

  36. There is power, but there's some things that Jesus knows about

  37. us. Jesus knows that your heart will

  38. be owned by your treasures. Notice he said, For where your

  39. treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  40. Will you say it with me? For where your treasure is,

  41. there your heart will be also. In other words, your treasure

  42. will own your heart. Your heart will be owned by

  43. treasure. Your heart, in the conception

  44. that Jesus had in his culture and the history and cultural of

  45. the Bible, is that your heart is this sort of internal governing

  46. center. It is more than just your

  47. emotions, it is your intellect, your will, your emotions, your

  48. moral character, and your spiritual orientation with God.

  49. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, your seat of will,

  50. your seat of power. Love God from there.

  51. And he says, where your heart is, there your treasure will be.

  52. Where your will is being oriented, there your treasure

  53. will be. So choose your treasures

  54. carefully because your treasures will also shape your heart.

  55. There's a mighty feedback loop going on here, and he says you

  56. can have earthly treasures or you can have heavenly treasures.

  57. How many of you have some earthly treasures?

  58. Yeah. I'm so glad you all are so rich.

  59. You have earthly treasures? We're grateful for those, right?

  60. We know. And we often treat them in our

  61. circle as blessings from God. In other circles, I have friends

  62. who say I earned it. It's mine, it's mine, it's mine,

  63. it's mine. They're like the seagulls.

  64. It's mine, it's mine, it's mine. Swooping in to take everything,

  65. it's mine. Leave no crumbs behind.

  66. It's mine. And though we may have money in

  67. the bank, though we may have an emergency fund, though we may

  68. have money even invested in companies.

  69. So we own a little bit of a company and we see the

  70. trajectory of what 30 years can do with compounding interest.

  71. I mean, you all know that's like one of the 8th wonders of the

  72. world. It's compounding interest.

  73. Those are earthly treasures, he says.

  74. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be.

  75. And so he says and offers an alternative.

  76. You could have heavenly treasures.

  77. Heavenly treasures, then can can actually be stored up as well.

  78. When you have earthly treasures, you worry about the market.

  79. When you have earthly treasures, you worry that someone's going

  80. to take it or that you're going to spend it all.

  81. When you have earthly treasures, you worry that, my goodness, it

  82. takes so much to have a car. Who knew about insurance when

  83. you're 18? Everything costs and costs and

  84. costs. And so we become anxious there

  85. with earthly treasures. Having earthly treasures is not

  86. the problem. The problem is when you also

  87. lack heavenly treasures that you say are of a greater value and

  88. worth. And so my true energy for

  89. storing up is to store up heavenly treasures.

  90. I'm redirecting my will towards heavenly treasures, knowing and

  91. being known by God, receiving my identity instead of just

  92. constructing it, being loved by God, giving myself to doing the

  93. work and will of God, responding to Jesus rightly, valuing people

  94. as greater than money. The list could go on of heavenly

  95. treasures. In fact, the incredible worth of

  96. the soul is the greatest treasure you personally have.

  97. What does it value and merit? A man to gain the whole world

  98. but lose his soul? Put your soul in the heavenly

  99. bank. Do you know the issue of our

  100. treasures and our heart is that we develop habits of heart that

  101. we're not even aware of? The year before I graduated from

  102. high school, Robert Bella wrote a really famous book, I don't

  103. know if you know it, Habits of the Heart.

  104. It was written in 1985 S. That may seem like a really old

  105. book to you, but in it he was trying to examine America and

  106. North American values and what is happening to the habits of

  107. our heart. And he said this, our culture

  108. does not give us much guidance as to how to fill the contours

  109. of this autonomous, self, responsible self.

  110. In other words, we're incredibly individualistic.

  111. Our culture is always trying to set us free.

  112. If you find yourself trying to differentiate from your parents

  113. when you're 13, you're really absorbing our independent, self

  114. defining culture. Define yourself.

  115. It didn't just start in the 2000s.

  116. It started early, early in North America.

  117. Define yourself. And he says we're not getting a

  118. lot of help with this except in two areas.

  119. One is the area of work, the realm par excellence of

  120. utilitarian individualism. The other area is the lifestyle

  121. enclave, the realm part excellence of expressive

  122. individualism, your work and your lifestyle.

  123. How many of you have little streams of work and lifestyle on

  124. your Instagram? Well, how many of you don't have

  125. Instagram? What else are you looking at on

  126. Instagram? It's about work and lifestyle,

  127. isn't it? How are you going to earn a lot

  128. of money? How are you going to spend it?

  129. Work and lifestyle. Maybe it's not about the money.

  130. Maybe it's about nature, lifestyle.

  131. How many of you have nature? Lifestyle, Art, lifestyle, good

  132. looks, lifestyle, lifting heavy lifestyle.

  133. I mean, it's all about the lifestyle and the work.

  134. And this started and this was known as a as a feature of our

  135. culture. In 1985, the Internet didn't

  136. exist yet. That was back in the days.

  137. Thank you for that, Aidan. Thank you, he goes.

  138. Robert Bella goes on to note the difficulty with this next slide.

  139. He says in the absence of any objectionifiable criteria or

  140. right or wrong, good or evil, the self and its feelings become

  141. our only moral guide. There, each individual is

  142. entitled to his or her own bit of space and is utterly free

  143. within its boundaries. But while everyone may be

  144. entitled to his or her own private space, only those who

  145. have enough money can in fact afford to purchase the private

  146. property required to do their own thing.

  147. It's like having an island where your heart is, there your

  148. treasure will be also. Do you want Treasure Island or

  149. do you want treasure heaven? And Jesus strangely teaches us

  150. to pray, Oh God, may your Kingdom come on earth as it is

  151. in heaven. So that somehow I think even in

  152. that prayer, we get little taste of the experiences of Kingdom

  153. treasures and heavenly treasures even right here on earth.

  154. When your heart is rightly aligned, when you've been drawn

  155. out from just work and lifestyle enclave as the defining features

  156. of your life, Jesus recommends BHT.

  157. This is not a stock recommendation.

  158. BHT next slide, the Bank of heavenly treasures.

  159. BHT remember it. Are you investing in BHT the

  160. Bank of heavenly treasures? Jesus knows not only about our

  161. treasures and our heart. Jesus knows about the health of

  162. your soul. He knows that your soul's health

  163. will be impacted by your gaze. I know it seemed a little

  164. strange that all of a sudden Jesus shifted to talking about

  165. your eyes and and the health of your eyes and what's going on

  166. inside your life. But what do you do when you have

  167. great treasures? You look at them.

  168. If you treasure yourself, you just look at yourself, say hey,

  169. your LG today looking good and you know, this is what we do.

  170. If you're really keyed up about your investment portfolio, you

  171. look at it every day. If you're able to just let it

  172. go, you forget about it. And you look at it once a year

  173. when you do your taxes. What you look at also influences

  174. your soul. Notice what he says.

  175. Let's read it together. The eye is the lamp of the body.

  176. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of

  177. light. Your eyes are the lamp of your

  178. body. And we are always looking for

  179. treasures, the next shiny thing squirrel.

  180. And we're looking, what we gaze at definitely impacts our lives.

  181. And there has never been quite the time and the generation that

  182. you are currently living in who's been so drawn to fix their

  183. gaze on that which is passing quickly away, it's designed to

  184. do that. Jesus knows this and he knows

  185. there's great competition for your attention.

  186. He knew this before the Internet.

  187. Jesus knows that what you attend to either enlightens or dims

  188. your soul. Jesus knows next slide, that the

  189. lens, the way you see the world, will also affect the health of

  190. your soul. If you see the world primarily

  191. as a competitive environment, that will affect your soul.

  192. If you see the world as always out to get you, that will affect

  193. your soul. If you see relationships as if

  194. someone's always trying to get advantage of you, that will

  195. affect your soul. If something is changed in the

  196. way you see the world, so that you see the world as a place of

  197. great abundance, that will affect your soul.

  198. This is my Father's world. If you see the world that way,

  199. it will affect your soul. If you see the world as if there

  200. is enough for everyone, that will affect your soul.

  201. If you see the world as a place in which you can trust others

  202. and you will risk trust instead of always fearing, that will

  203. affect your soul. A friend of mine was discovering

  204. but that he had cataracts and so he needed to have cataract

  205. surgery. It's not covered under MSP.

  206. So he was figuring out which kind of lens he would have put

  207. in his eye. I was like, Peter, this just

  208. freaks me out. You're having to decide which

  209. kind of lens. He's like, yeah, if I get this

  210. lens, these will be the benefits.

  211. If I get this lens, that'll be the benefits.

  212. And I said, and then what else is going to happen?

  213. He says I won't need glasses anymore.

  214. I was like, man, that's incredible.

  215. The changed lens changed the way he was able to live, and Jesus

  216. actually is offering a change of lens so that He can change our

  217. souls. This too is another powerful

  218. feedback loop and it will affect the way you hold and spend

  219. money. The Desert Fathers said this

  220. about money, that he who is the slave of money guards his money

  221. as a slave, but he who has thrown off the yoke of his

  222. slavery to money dispenses money as if he is its master.

  223. Who gave that idea to that group of Christians?

  224. It was Jesus. You see, Jesus knows something

  225. else. Jesus knows that you are not

  226. made for 2 masters. Let's read it together.

  227. No one can serve 2 masters. If you ever had a situation

  228. where you had two bosses, it's just like what, what, what?

  229. And they each had their own opinion.

  230. It's terrible. You need to know who your boss

  231. is and Jesus understands that. Most of us assume that in having

  232. money, we're are the boss of money, and he's making it clear

  233. that's not so. There's A2 master syndrome, and

  234. this happens when you sort of wave at God, but your gaze is

  235. set on the money, money, money, money.

  236. You're waving at God, Say, hey, God, I see you over there, but

  237. hey, look at that money. Look at that great salary.

  238. Look at that opportunity and you just wave at God with no wisdom,

  239. with no sense of where your treasure is.

  240. In fact, your heart is being dominated by guarding your

  241. treasure. Now, some of you don't worry

  242. about this a lot because you don't have a lot of treasure at

  243. the moment. I know this.

  244. I know it's true. Student life is situational

  245. poverty. Immigration is often situational

  246. poverty. It's just a situation for a time

  247. that you hope isn't going to last long, that you're just

  248. going to pass through this time. This is why over 300 student

  249. households a week come to the Acadia Food Hub, a food bank

  250. here on campus. It's situational poverty you're

  251. passing through. I know you're passing through,

  252. but someday somebody's going to try to sell you a security

  253. system because you've got to worry that someone's going to

  254. break in my house and get all the money that I have stored in

  255. my mattress. I don't know, like, how much

  256. treasures are you all keeping in your homes?

  257. Who cares if somebody breaks in? What's really there to take?

  258. Maybe your computer. That's the one, right?

  259. That's the one. I mean, how many forks does it

  260. matter if they take? But when you've got really

  261. wealth, you have silver forks and you're like, oh, you know,

  262. price of silver is going up and so you worry.

  263. In fact, the proverbs tell us that those who build high gates,

  264. high security systems, actually invite destruction.

  265. Because everyone's wondering, well, what are you hiding over

  266. there? Maybe I need some of that.

  267. Better, he says, to just have enough.

  268. And so when you have money, money becomes your master unless

  269. you've let your heart be mastered by someone else.

  270. Flip side of this is not having money.

  271. If can also let money be your master where you say, well, I

  272. see that opportunity out there or I hear God calling me to do

  273. something or I really have this better, better and greater

  274. vision of my life, but I can't do it because I don't have

  275. money. That's money being the master

  276. again, instead of being set free to enter into the abundance and

  277. the opportunity and the provision and the way of God.

  278. Because if you get your head up and your eyes open and your

  279. heart free from anxiety, you can see more opportunities.

  280. But the two master syndrome means that you're either going

  281. to hate the one and love the other, or you'll be devoted to

  282. the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and

  283. money. And so our determination has to

  284. be, I will serve God and God will teach me so that money

  285. becomes my servant. God will free me, so money

  286. becomes servant. Now the word money here isn't

  287. just about cash in your pocket or coins in your pocket.

  288. The word money is actually a word mammon, and some of you in

  289. your Bible translations, it may have actually translated it as

  290. that Mammon. You can say it to your neighbor

  291. mammon. And mammon is this sort of this,

  292. this aspect of stuff. And that stuff develops its own

  293. personality and power and draw. And Jesus is inviting you to ask

  294. the question, who's the money master in your life?

  295. Who's the master of your life? It's very simple question and

  296. principle. During the next 40 days, Lent

  297. will be going on. And Lent is the opportunity to

  298. move towards Easter and the celebration of Jesus.

  299. But Lent actually is a recognition of our own

  300. finiteness that that we actually are going to die.

  301. And the truth is that in knowing and calculating that you're

  302. going to die, you know that you don't take anything with you

  303. naked. You come into the world naked,

  304. you go out from dust to dust. There's great wisdom in

  305. calculating that. And it right sizes the issue of

  306. money and possessions and comforts in our lives.

  307. It right sizes the greater treasures in our life to be

  308. valued beyond just money. It actually invites us to be

  309. freed from greed, which Paul calls a form of idolatry.

  310. And so for the next 40 days, I want to invite you to use the

  311. Lectio app that's on the link tree.

  312. Of course. Use the Lectio app and pray

  313. daily on a 40 day journey with the Desert Fathers and Mothers

  314. with 24/7 prayer. The Desert Fathers and Mothers

  315. lived in the three hundreds and it was a movement to leave the

  316. city, to draw away from wealth and to draw closer to heavenly

  317. treasures. It'll be an interesting journey,

  318. so I invite you with us on that. Who is your money?

  319. Master Zacchaeus climbed a tree, didn't he?

  320. He climbed a tree because he was we.

  321. He was short, and he climbed up in the tree to see who he could

  322. see. Thank you.

  323. Thank you. You're following along.

  324. Why did Zacchaeus climb that tree?

  325. Zacchaeus, the man who was a tax collector.

  326. Zacchaeus, the man who had great wealth.

  327. Zacchaeus, the man who had position but was actually in a

  328. squeeze because he was tolerated by the Romans for his skill at

  329. collecting taxes. He was despised and hated by his

  330. Jewish brothers because he collected taxes.

  331. The tax collectors were known for lining their pockets with a

  332. little bit extra. They were given judicial rights

  333. and privileges to collect more, and apparently he had collected

  334. more. But something was drawing him to

  335. Jesus and because of the crowd, he couldn't get close.

  336. So he climbed up in a tree to see Jesus.

  337. I don't know you. When's the last time you saw a

  338. short, wealthy person climb up in a tree?

  339. Unheard of, right? Sort of humiliating.

  340. And so in that move, Zacchaeus was actually humbling himself.

  341. He climbed up and humbled himself, and Jesus saw him and

  342. honored him. Zacchaeus, come down.

  343. I'm going to go to your house today.

  344. And it says that Zacchaeus gladly welcomed Jesus.

  345. He was so excited. This was probably more than he

  346. expected. You see, his treasure was

  347. shifting, His treasure house was shifting.

  348. His heart was moving, drawn to Jesus.

  349. And ultimately the master of his heart would change too, because

  350. they're at that banquet where Jesus was seated and just

  351. enjoying the hospitality of Zacchaeus, the hospitality of

  352. his wealth. Something completely opened in

  353. the heart and soul of Zacchaeus. Something changed about his eyes

  354. and what he would truly value now.

  355. And notice what he listen to what he says.

  356. Zacchaeus stood up at the supper and he said, Lord, look, look,

  357. Lord, look, fix your eyes on me. Wow, this is really interesting.

  358. He already knew that Jesus had seen him.

  359. He already knew that Jesus could see his heart.

  360. He already knew that others were missing the transformation that

  361. was starting to happen in his life.

  362. But now he wanted to make it clear here and now he says, I

  363. give half of my possessions to the poor.

  364. Oh, do you see the shift of treasures?

  365. No longer were his his treasures just in his possessions, but now

  366. his treasures were in the life of people.

  367. I give it to the poor. And he says if I have cheated

  368. anybody out of anything, can't you imagine that?

  369. Some people in the room began to laugh.

  370. His his own company around him. What?

  371. Yeah, we all know you're a cheat.

  372. We know you've you've won by cheating.

  373. He says if I've cheated anyone out of anything, I will pay back

  374. four times the amount. A shift of heart.

  375. The first evidence, the public evidence of Zacchaeus

  376. transformation wasn't just climbing up the tree, it was

  377. declaring his freedom by being able to give, by being able to

  378. say that's not my true treasure. People are my true treasure with

  379. God. Look, Lord, he says they've been

  380. a mighty shift in his life and it impacted his money.

  381. When we come to the table of Jesus, we're actually saying

  382. that Jesus is our treasure. When we hold the bread and hold

  383. the cup, we are recalling and remembering Jesus and saying, oh

  384. Jesus, you are my treasure. I'm going to gaze upon you here

  385. at this table. I'm going to remember you.

  386. And This is why it's so important every week that we

  387. realign and shift the allegiances of our heart to

  388. Jesus so that we can go out of here having said to the Lord,

  389. hey Lord, look at me, could you say it with me?

  390. Lord, look at me, what a prayer. Lord, look at me, can you say

  391. it? Lord, look at me.

  392. Lord, see my heart. Lord, look how I'm shifting the

  393. treasures of my life. As we'll see next week, this is

  394. actually the pathway to great peace in our lives.

  395. Even when money is a trouble. Let's stand together.

  396. Going to invite the worship team to come up.

  397. I want to invite you to all be like Zacchaeus, but we don't

  398. have trees to climb. But whatever it takes for you in

  399. this moment to express humility to Jesus, that's what I want to

  400. invite you to do. So if some of you would like to

  401. just sort of kneel in front of Jesus, do it carefully.

  402. We don't want you falling all the way down, but you can go up

  403. to the to the railing up there and you can kneel there If you

  404. want to kneel, if you want to just open your hands and say,

  405. Jesus, I'm humbly opening my hands and or I'm pointing

  406. towards you. You're my greatest treasure.

  407. Whatever it takes for you right now to just physically and in

  408. your heart say to Jesus, Son, look at me, Lord, I'm going to

  409. humble myself in front of you. I want to shift my treasures.

  410. I want to invest in BHT, the Bank of Heavenly Treasures.

  411. And some of you may find along the way that you can't do it,

  412. that you feel like there's too much darkness, too much anxiety,

  413. that you can't do it that that you thought you had a grip on

  414. the money, but money's got a grip on you that you can't do

  415. it. Your future ambitions right now

  416. have more a grip on you than you have a grip on God.

  417. Ask Jesus for help and surrender to him.

  418. He's the kind of master that gives you so much agency.

  419. He's not looking to just control and dominate and squish you

  420. under his great power. He wants to pump you up, build

  421. you up, and to set you free in the Spirit.

  422. What are the gifts of the Spirit?

  423. Lovejoy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness

  424. and self-control. So much agency in the power and

  425. Spirit and gift at the freedom of Jesus when you've been given

  426. freedom in Him. He's saying I'm giving you

  427. self-control. I'm giving you control of your

  428. life. You have the agency in your life

  429. about your treasures, about your eyes, about the health of your

  430. life and what you do with money. And all of that comes about

  431. because Jesus, though he was rich in heaven, became poor for

  432. our sakes, and he gave himself for us.

  433. So whatever it takes, as we sing the song and prepare for the

  434. Lord's Supper, just humble yourself in front of the Lord,

  435. yeah.
